- 0:32Welcome back to the Realtor Who wines podcast.
- 0:34I'm Rashelle and today I'm with Adriana Sassy.
- 0:37And we are at her beautiful, short term rental location that you could rent.
- 0:42And we if you watch the YouTube, definitely check out the video because we're going to show you a little bit more about this beautiful location and the vineyard that's behind us.
- 0:50But before we get started today, I just wanted to say cheers to you.
- 0:54Cheers.
- 0:54Thank you so much for having me on the show.
- 0:57Thank you for or for being on the show.
- 1:00I'm having you on the show.
- 1:01I swear we have had zero wine so far.
- 1:04Thank you for having me. I'm.
- 1:09We are actually drinking.
- 1:12Does this wine have a name outside of, like, Pinot noir?
- 1:18Like, it's from, while it's my husband's wine, he makes it, and right now he calls it cherries wine.
- 1:27But it's going to be from the vineyard behind us here.
- 1:32And it's Sassy Vineyard.
- 1:33Yeah, yeah, I it's so delicious.
- 1:36I can't wait until you have your tasting room open.
- 1:38That'll be so great.
- 1:40What to it? Yeah.
- 1:41Let's talk a little bit about you before we dive into the house that we're in today.
- 1:47And the wine.
- 1:49You are not born and raised in America.
- 1:51You were born in Brazil, correct? Yeah.
- 1:53And what brought you to America?
- 1:55So I came in 1988 as an exchange student.
- 2:00And, I, I met my husband, went back, came back, got married and, it was supposed to be six months.
- 2:12I've been here for 38 years. Yeah.
- 2:14That's amazing.
- 2:16And what brought you and Sherry into the wine industry or the wine area?
- 2:20So we moved to West Salem, in Hopewell and around that time, wineries were starting to pop up everywhere.
- 2:31And, it was in people's garage, and they were making very good wine.
- 2:38So we stayed there for six years.
- 2:40So we were right in the middle of, you know.
- 2:42Yeah, the Salem wine areas have really flourished in the last.
- 2:46So we were there when it was start to, bloom down there.
- 2:53And then we moved, a few years later to, I think it was in 2012 to Dundee.
- 3:03And Shari, my husband is a carpenter and he works, he makes, the wood work for the wineries around.
- 3:11Yeah. He makes beautiful rooms.
- 3:13Yeah.
- 3:13Beautiful tables, beautiful wine cabinet and, like, yeah, you can see a lot of his work at wineries throughout the area. So.
- 3:22And we're right in the middle of wine country. Yes.
- 3:26The Four Graces is right across the street from us.
- 3:29Duck pond is behind us.
- 3:31And, but I worked for Kaiser Permanente for 32 years as a dental assistant.
- 3:39I just retired last year.
- 3:41Congratulations.
- 3:43Yeah, it's been nice, but Shari always insisted that I quit my job and just join him.
- 3:50Yeah. Entrepreneurial endeavors.
- 3:53In the industry.
- 3:55So it took me a while, but I gathered the courage.
- 3:58I retired, and I started my, wine tours business.
- 4:02Yeah.
- 4:03So talk a little bit about the wine tours business.
- 4:05How many people do you normally take out on a tour, So I yes.
- 4:11Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:12You're like, oh yeah, what's wrong with it?
- 4:15It's a little, That's okay.
- 4:17Maybe I won't have as many chance, but yeah, that's nice.
- 4:23Okay. Oh this is good view.
- 4:28It still figure awesome.
- 4:31Beautiful. Perfect.
- 4:32And you can keep it okay.
- 4:33So I'll say that question.
- 4:36Let's talk a little bit more about your tour business.
- 4:39How many people do you normally take out on a tour with you?
- 4:41So I have, a smaller car for 2 to 3 people.
- 4:47And then we have, sprinter van for 11 people.
- 4:51Oh, wow. Yeah.
- 4:52So, from, groups of two all the way up to 11.
- 4:57Okay.
- 4:58And when people book with you, do you choose the wineries or do they choose the wineries?
- 5:03So if they're new to the, area, I'll just pick the wine.
- 5:08Yeah. Because you already know the good ones to go.
- 5:10Yeah, yeah. And I do have my favorites, but I pick the wineries and I do all the reservations.
- 5:17Lunch, and, I do dinner, too, if they request me.
- 5:22So I do all of it. Okay.
- 5:24But if they've been here or they want to visit a particular winery that they've heard about, then I'll just go with what they want.
- 5:34Yeah.
- 5:34And if when you make the reservations with the fee that you charge for your tour, are the wine tastings included in that, or do they pay separately at each winery?
- 5:44They pay separately, okay. Each winery.
- 5:46So it's not just my fees.
- 5:49And then they just take care of the tastings as they go, because in that way they're not tied into if they don't want to do a tasting, they could buy a bottle, right?
- 5:57Just a glass and things like that.
- 5:59Do the wineries ever work or partner with you on like a discount on tastings?
- 6:04If you have a larger group or anything like that?
- 6:06I, we, I haven't had that offered to me.
- 6:10Yeah, yeah.
- 6:10I'm just curious.
- 6:11So yeah, I just really I choose the wineries that I really like the wine.
- 6:18And the smaller places that are.
- 6:22Yeah.
- 6:22Now family oriented.
- 6:24We still have a lot of those around here, and they are very nice.
- 6:27And guests usually like those.
- 6:31I'm a sucker for if I'm in a wine tasting room and the winemakers there or the owners there, I'm instantly like, where's your wine club?
- 6:39Let me sign up, because I just love supporting local families so much.
- 6:43Yeah, and local farmers too.
- 6:44When I think of wine, a lot of people are like, oh, you like to party?
- 6:47And there's like, no, I, I actually, I think more of the craft of the wine, the farming that goes behind it, the whole creating the wine, the chemistry behind the wine.
- 6:55Like I'm just fascinated by all of it.
- 6:57And then the love that you have to have for your art of making wine, because it takes so much time.
- 7:03You have to wait for grapes to be a certain age.
- 7:05You have to wait for the wine to age a certain thing.
- 7:06Like you have to have a lot of patience to be in the wine industry, and you can really see the passion total that this wine industry.
- 7:15Has for what they do and how they make their wine and how they take care of the environment.
- 7:23So there is a lot of pride in that.
- 7:25Yes, absolutely. Great job.
- 7:27It's, it's nice to see. Yeah.
- 7:29Yeah I agree with you.
- 7:31How what made you want to do something like this.
- 7:35So we're sitting in your short term rental which is in the heart of the Newburgh wine country.
- 7:39What made you decide to go and do an Airbnb?
- 7:43Oh, yeah.
- 7:44Now we just, the opportunity came to us to, get this place with, support of a partner.
- 7:54And, I just love hospitality.
- 7:57I need to, I just love to just cater to people, make them feel special and, cared for.
- 8:06Yeah. I just love that. Me, too.
- 8:08So when it was really nice to start with this place and, you know, put all the furniture and this special touches all together.
- 8:18It's beautiful.
- 8:20And this is four bedrooms.
- 8:21Four bedrooms. Yeah, yeah. It's gorgeous.
- 8:24Like I said, if you watching this podcast episode on YouTube, you'll get to see more of it.
- 8:29Or definitely check out our social media platforms to see pictures and things because it's available to rent.
- 8:35So if you're looking to visit the wine Country area and it sleeps, how many does I sleep comfortably?
- 8:41Eight. Eight.
- 8:42Yeah. So and there's a table for eight.
- 8:42There's a large kitchen.
- 8:44You'll get to see everything.
- 8:45And then of course you can see the view behind us, which is breathtaking.
- 8:50It's the best part.
- 8:51Also, on this piece of property, you're going to be building the tasting room and an event space.
- 8:57Talked a little bit about the plans for that.
- 8:59So it's right next door.
- 9:01We have 10,000 square well square meter.
- 9:06There used to be a barn.
- 9:09Well stable for horses.
- 9:12And when we got the property, we decided to just, tear it down inside and just make a huge event.
- 9:22Space. Space.
- 9:24And that's where the, tasting room is going to be with a deck outside, facing that.
- 9:31It'll be so beautiful.
- 9:33Is there a timeline in place for when you hope to have that?
- 9:36A year, then? A year and a half? Sure.
- 9:38Yeah, that takes time.
- 9:39You got a and then I'm sure you're going to do it.
- 9:41And parts like maybe do the tasting room and then do the venue for parties and weddings and things.
- 9:47Right. The tasting room comes first.
- 9:50Sure. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:52And then Sherry, is he going to keep part of it for his woodworking shop?
- 9:55Because I saw he has some tables.
- 9:56Yeah. He's making, his tables over there.
- 10:00I'm not sure about that.
- 10:01We need to see what's going to happen.
- 10:03Be prepared. Sherry.
- 10:04She's going on to talk about bit.
- 10:07And then there's vines behind us.
- 10:10Right.
- 10:10What variety is behind us?
- 10:12It's just a Pinot noir.
- 10:15And, I think it's just five acres down there, and we still have three years to go. Okay.
- 10:21And then I know that there plans to be vines on this side to do, you know, is he also going to do Pinot noir?
- 10:27There? Different varieties. Yeah.
- 10:29Pinot noir. Yes.
- 10:30Yeah.
- 10:31And, these back here already planted I think there is, is still three years to go until we can get the fruit from here.
- 10:39So meanwhile we get it from other then vineyards. Yes.
- 10:45How do you choose which vineyards to partner with or to buy grapes from.
- 10:49So Shari is very friendly.
- 10:52I also I can agree, yes she knows everybody knows everybody's and people really like him a lot.
- 10:59Yeah.
- 11:00And so they just, let him go with his helpers and pick the grapes and, he makes his wine.
- 11:10One year, I helped him.
- 11:12Not very good grapes.
- 11:15That's a lot of work.
- 11:16It's hard. Hard work. It really is.
- 11:19I think people romanticize it a lot because they've seen things like I Love Lucy when she's like, yeah, and.
- 11:24And the grapes are like any other movie or TV.
- 11:28But it is so much work and it takes a lot of.
- 11:31And you can't unlike hazelnuts and things.
- 11:33Or you can, like, scoop them off the ground as the hazelnuts fall like grapes you have to, like, can clip a lot.
- 11:37There's not a lot of machinery, or you damage the grapes when you're harvesting them, so you have to harvest a certain way or yes, you lose the grapes.
- 11:45So it's so time consuming. It is.
- 11:47How many people does he have help him when he goes out to oh back.
- 11:51Well this year that I helped him we had me a friend and two other guys.
- 11:59And I'll tell you, it takes a lot of grapes to fill up.
- 12:03Oh, sure. Yeah.
- 12:05So. And, that was, just this one time I did it, and now he just does it with his helpers.
- 12:14Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:15He loves it though.
- 12:16It's hard work but he loves it. Yeah.
- 12:19He definitely has a lot of pride in his life too.
- 12:21Yes. Yeah.
- 12:24What is next for you.
- 12:25So obviously working on the tasting room and the event space.
- 12:28But in the meantime what are some things that you're hoping to see on the horizon for you guys?
- 12:33Well, I'm working hard, with my business to go around.
- 12:38I've been doing this for two and a half years.
- 12:41The wine tours business.
- 12:42Yes. And, when I started, I was still working full time with Kaiser, so I was doing that, during the, like on the side.
- 12:52Yeah, weekends.
- 12:54And since I, retired last year in June, I've been dedicated my full time, to, to do this.
- 13:04And it's a little slow and, and, you know, the wineries have noticed that, business is down a little bit.
- 13:14So I think I have to work a little extra hard because there are a lot of other businesses like mine out there.
- 13:21So, but the community is wonderful.
- 13:25Yeah, even all of us, the drivers and the tour guide, people, we're, we're really supportive of each other.
- 13:33Really nice. Yeah.
- 13:34Collaboration over competition is the only way to go, because there's going to be times when, like, you go home to Brazil to visit family and you're not available for clients, then you can say, oh, I'm out of town, but I know this great driver.
- 13:46They'd be happy to help you have a great birthday, you know?
- 13:49Yeah.
- 13:49And they could do the same for you too when they're busy.
- 13:51And so it's super important.
- 13:53I've noticed, we go to industry events and we, when we meet each other, we exchanged cards, you know, and, absolutely.
- 14:02It's really, it's nice to know what some of our listeners are new to wine and wine tasting.
- 14:08What kind of advice do you give when you're giving someone a tour, like what they should do at a tasting, or how they should approach the tasting?
- 14:16Well, when they ask me, what kind, where they should go?
- 14:25Personally, I like the wineries that you like, where you can meet the owner.
- 14:30Yeah.
- 14:31And, I encourage them to take, sometimes it's, a little bit more expensive, but to take a tour, around the vineyard and, where they make the wine. Yeah.
- 14:45Especially if they're not from wine country or live near it.
- 14:49Definitely immerse yourself and learn a little bit about it.
- 14:52It makes the wine taste better.
- 14:52We probably.
- 14:54Oh, yes, it does when you know how much hard work goes into it.
- 14:58And there's nothing wrong with like the bigger box, wineries or the corporate owned wineries, but there's just something so special and like, intimate.
- 15:06When you get to meet the winemaker and you get to hear why they chose what they chose or which grapes they wanted to use, or what their vision was with it and stuff, and it's just a totally different experience.
- 15:16They have this love for the land.
- 15:18It's really nice to see. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:21What about, if someone said to you like, oh, I like more whites and reds, where would you take them in this area?
- 15:28So, we're in red country.
- 15:32Yeah. That's right.
- 15:34But, they're making really good, Chardonnays.
- 15:38Now, really, I've noticed that a lot of the wineries are having Chinese pop up.
- 15:43Yeah. And Pinot green.
- 15:45They're so good.
- 15:47And, Argyle has the best, sparkling wine.
- 15:52They do have a wide range of the.
- 15:54And they are corporate owned. Yeah.
- 15:55But they do have a beautiful tasting room and they have a wide range of sparkles and some of the lighter wines for sure.
- 16:02Friendly.
- 16:04And flexible with their, schedule and time.
- 16:10And they have a food truck on location, which always helps in your wine tasting to have a little nibble.
- 16:15Yeah, that is the one thing with some of the smaller wineries.
- 16:18They don't have food available, right?
- 16:20But they allow you to bring food most of the time. Yeah.
- 16:22So picnic basket. Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:25And there is.
- 16:26I just tried, the new sparkling wine at Domaine de Vue.
- 16:31And, I was blown away by.
- 16:34Okay, add it to the list.
- 16:34I haven't had that one yet.
- 16:37I'll have to go check.
- 16:38That is incredible.
- 16:39Bruno.
- 16:39He's a great winemaker.
- 16:42He's so proud of what he does.
- 16:44He has this passion about it and his shows.
- 16:48Yeah, I've had some of their wine.
- 16:50I just haven't had that one.
- 16:51You were just talking about the sparkling?
- 16:53Yes. Yeah.
- 16:54Very nice, very good.
- 16:56How would you people get in touch with you if they want to hire you for a wine tour, to ask you more questions so they can call me or go into my website, sent me, a message.
- 17:09It's all in there for them to go and click, and it's really easy.
- 17:14Okay.
- 17:15We'll make sure to put all of your details in the podcast and on the YouTube page as well.
- 17:21On average, when you're doing a tour, do you go to two stops?
- 17:24Three stops.
- 17:25So if we do forest stops, a lot of people like that.
- 17:29Yeah. For the full day, it's, they'll have, lunch at one of the wineries if they choose to go to three, then we have time to stop.
- 17:42And one of our very nice local restaurants.
- 17:46And I'll just make all the, the, reservations, and, and some people just want to go to two.
- 17:56Yeah.
- 17:56You know, and take more, a little more time.
- 18:00Yeah. In each of them.
- 18:01That makes sense.
- 18:02It also depends on how big your party is, right?
- 18:04It's harder to get ten people for stops and it to people.
- 18:08Yeah, especially by the third stop.
- 18:10It's like hurting junk. Yeah. Oh like.
- 18:12All right.
- 18:12Come on.
- 18:12It's funny in the car that I'm running against the clock.
- 18:16Yeah, it's time to go.
- 18:18We have one more reservation and go.
- 18:21But yeah, two people.
- 18:21It's a lot easier to.
- 18:23Yeah.
- 18:23So yeah, I think the sweet spot is like 4 to 6.
- 18:26Yeah.
- 18:26It's like, it's not that it feels like a celebration, but it's not too much.
- 18:30That's like easy to manage to get everybody in the car.
- 18:33Like who's in the bathroom now.
- 18:34Like there's none of that, like when there's only six or less.
- 18:38And I've been very lucky.
- 18:40I only had, so far, wonderful people.
- 18:43Oh, just wonderful people.
- 18:44Sometimes they ask, you know, invite me to drink with them, you know, and I have to remind them, you know, you're paying me to drive sober, so.
- 18:54No, thank you another time.
- 18:56I appreciate it, but we're going to arrive alive today.
- 18:59Yeah, right. That's funny.
- 19:01Do you stay, like, in the Dundee McMinnville area, or do you go towards Amity or any of the other I kin if they want to go to Amity area.
- 19:11So I pick 3 or 4.
- 19:13Close there, you know, so we don't waste time.
- 19:16And on the road. Yeah.
- 19:19I've been several times to Eugene.
- 19:21Oh, yeah.
- 19:22There's a lot of. Yes.
- 19:23Very beautiful places over there.
- 19:26And they don't have, tour business like we do up here.
- 19:30Yeah.
- 19:30So I've been there several times, and, Yeah, I just, Whatever.
- 19:38You're not limited to. No. Certain.
- 19:38So. Yeah.
- 19:40So somebody called and said, we really want to do like the Gorge.
- 19:44Would you go out to the gorge or is that too far?
- 19:46I think that would be too far, too far for him.
- 19:48Okay.
- 19:48Yeah, yeah, but I did take a group from, They come.
- 19:52They came from the East Coast, New York, Boston, a group of, ladies.
- 19:57And I took them to the beach.
- 19:59Oh, nice. One day, one day of wine tasting.
- 20:02And then the next day we went to Cannon Beach.
- 20:04Okay.
- 20:05Did you stay out that way too?
- 20:06Just for a they check them for the day.
- 20:08Yeah. That's nice.
- 20:08Just so they stay there.
- 20:10I wait for them, you know, but I take them to a nice restaurant stop for for the views and pictures.
- 20:18They go there, have lunch, walk, and, you know, it's a full day.
- 20:22Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:23Very catered. Yes.
- 20:25Whatever the client needs.
- 20:26That's so wonderful because a lot of tours I found it's very specific.
- 20:30Like we go to this list a winery.
- 20:32Oh, yeah. I like this many stops.
- 20:34So it's nice to know someone's coming to visit Oregon. Yes.
- 20:36And they just want kind of a tour in general.
- 20:39Like you might be able to assist them with that.
- 20:41I don't get anything from taking people to the wineries.
- 20:46So I just I pick in my opinion my personal opinion the best ones.
- 20:52Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:53Yeah.
- 20:53Which is good because where they hire you for, for your opinion and it helps that, you know a lot of people in the industry.
- 20:59So yeah.
- 20:59So now like what goes on behind it, all the things like that.
- 21:03Right.
- 21:03Thank you so much for being on the show today.
- 21:06I have really enjoyed getting to know more about you and sharing Sassy Vineyards with everybody on the Devon.
- 21:12Right? Yes.
- 21:13Tours. Yeah.
- 21:14And also this beautiful Airbnb.
- 21:16Again, if you are trying to travel to the Pacific Northwest, you want to see the beautiful wine country out here, but you don't want to do it alone.
- 21:24Your girl is right here.
- 21:25She is ready to help you and give you the greatest time.
- 21:28And she is also a hospitality hostess of the Mostess.
- 21:31So thank you again for being here.
- 21:34I really appreciate it and thanks for having me at your beautiful Airbnb.
- 21:37Thank you for giving me the opportunity to sit here with you.
- 21:40Yes, about my business and thanks for the support of really appreciate it.
- 21:45Yes, absolutely.
- 21:47Thanks everyone for tuning in and we'll see you on the next episode.
- 21:50Cheers.
