Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: As we know, Kakadou National Parks Cahill's Crossing viewing Area,
- 0:04Speaker 1: it is going to be reopening from today, following on
- 0:07Speaker 1: from a three million dollar upgrade at the site. And
- 0:10Speaker 1: joining me on the line right now is Kakadoo Park
- 0:13Speaker 1: Management Operations Manager, I believe, Sean Barclay.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Good morning to you.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Sean, morning, Katie.
- 0:20Speaker 2: How are you very well?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Sean? Tell us a little bit more about this, the
- 0:24Speaker 1: reopening which is happening today.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Well, as you've mentioned, there's been closer a little while
- 0:29Speaker 3: while we do a big infrastructure upgrade at the site.
- 0:32Speaker 3: So it's a significant reworking of the site which includes
- 0:35Speaker 3: a new picnic area, three new viewing platforms linked by
- 0:39Speaker 3: a rainforest walk, and it provides a safe vantage point
- 0:42Speaker 3: for visitors to view crocodiles at Kakadu and their heaps
- 0:45Speaker 3: of them.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Well, there is there's so many of them, I mean
- 0:49Speaker 1: on last estimates, do we know exactly how many, ah.
- 0:54Speaker 3: More than ten thousands, we'll say, And the Kale's Crossing
- 0:57Speaker 3: area sort of post one of the highest densities of
- 0:59Speaker 3: crocodiles in the park. You know, you can see crocodiles
- 1:03Speaker 3: there between four and five meters waging up to seven
- 1:05Speaker 3: hundred kilos and at this time of year they tend
- 1:07Speaker 3: to congregate at the crossing, so it's really quite a
- 1:10Speaker 3: spectacular spot.
- 1:12Speaker 2: So Sean just.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Talk us through that main viewing platform, so it's basically
- 1:16Speaker 1: going to be looking directly over the crossing.
- 1:20Speaker 3: That's right, and it sort of gives visitors a spectacular
- 1:23Speaker 3: advantage point to view crocodiles feeding and sort of bait
- 1:26Speaker 3: comes up against the barrows. There's also some other viewing
- 1:30Speaker 3: platforms downstream from there that are joined by a rainforest
- 1:33Speaker 3: walk that is kind of good to get out of
- 1:36Speaker 3: the sun and go through a bit of a walk
- 1:37Speaker 3: along the river.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Yeah, and do we get a lot of people visit
- 1:40Speaker 2: that area.
- 1:42Speaker 3: We do. It's one of the sort of main reasons
- 1:44Speaker 3: that people come to Kakadu, and this year we've seen
- 1:47Speaker 3: it's been an absolutely bumping year for tourist numbers in
- 1:50Speaker 3: the park, so we expect that this particular site will
- 1:53Speaker 3: be highly visited now that's back open, and.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Sean, one of the other things that we unfortunately see
- 1:58Speaker 1: quite often is people sort of cry trying to get
- 2:00Speaker 1: across that crossing or standing really close to where the
- 2:04Speaker 1: crocodiles and that kind of thing are as well.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Is this going to make it a bit safer.
- 2:09Speaker 3: It'll make it a lot safer. It provides a really
- 2:12Speaker 3: safe vantage point. So hopefully we won't see people gathering
- 2:15Speaker 3: on the crossing anymore now that the crossing is open
- 2:19Speaker 3: and park manage. We'd really like to thank the commercial
- 2:21Speaker 3: tourism operators but temporarily suspending tour as well was under construction,
- 2:25Speaker 3: and thank everyone that followed the signage that was in place.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Why we were doing this.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Work and how long did it actually take to get
- 2:31Speaker 2: done in the.
- 2:32Speaker 3: End, around three months, but there was a long design
- 2:36Speaker 3: process that we've co designed with Ditrition Lanners to make
- 2:40Speaker 3: sure that everyone's happy with the new design work. And
- 2:42Speaker 3: I'm pleased to say this is a really good outcome
- 2:44Speaker 3: from a lot of work from a lot of people.
- 2:46Speaker 2: And Sean, what's the reaction been so far?
- 2:48Speaker 1: I mean, I know it's something just open today, but
- 2:51Speaker 1: has there been much reaction so far?
- 2:55Speaker 3: There's been a fair bit of media interest. I'm on
- 2:57Speaker 3: my way out there now to see how it's going.
- 2:59Speaker 3: We've got a bit of a set remaining with the
- 3:00Speaker 3: true laners and we expect to see get a lot
- 3:02Speaker 3: of people out there.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Of course, good stuff well Shawn Barclay, the National Park
- 3:09Speaker 1: Kakadu National Park Manager, always appreciate your time, particularly on
- 3:13Speaker 1: pretty short notice.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Thank you for having a chat with us this morning.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Thanks Katie, thank you,
