- 0:00Speaker 1: A friend yesterday said to me, have you talked about
- 0:04Speaker 1: on your show yet the sex club in downtown Salt
- 0:10Speaker 1: Lake City?
- 0:10Speaker 2: And I said no, it's supposed to be a sacred gina.
- 0:14Speaker 3: I said what and she said yeah, this is a thing.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Yeah, which what? Which?
- 0:24Speaker 1: I didn't believe her and she said no, look it up.
- 0:30Speaker 3: It is the cover story of the City Weekly.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Oh, on their May sixth edition. There is a big
- 0:37Speaker 1: story about it in there.
- 0:40Speaker 3: May I read you some of this?
- 0:42Speaker 2: Please?
- 0:44Speaker 3: For generations.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Utah's religious landscape has been defined by established religions that
- 0:49Speaker 1: fit within the Judeo Christian tradition, but new religious organizations
- 0:54Speaker 1: like The Sanctuary in Salt Lake City offer a radically
- 0:57Speaker 1: different model, which may point to what comes next in
- 1:00Speaker 1: the United States.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Describing itself as an invitation.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Only spiritual fellowship for people who quote seek the freedom
- 1:08Speaker 1: to explore without shame, the Sanctuary, founded in twenty twenty
- 1:13Speaker 1: five by James Swinson, claims thousands of members. Sex positivity
- 1:18Speaker 1: is central to the sanctuaries theology.
- 1:22Speaker 3: So they're calling themselves a religion.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Well, that's how you get away with it.
- 1:26Speaker 3: That's how you get away with it.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Poly people are welcome swingers are welcome. We have members
- 1:30Speaker 1: who are non binary. By the way, it's right there
- 1:35Speaker 1: where on Market Street.
- 1:37Speaker 3: That big, old, beautiful building across the street from Market
- 1:41Speaker 3: Street really.
- 1:43Speaker 2: A whole building, and the dual the dues aren't very
- 1:45Speaker 2: much or.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Four floors, multiple floors, that whole building. The Sanctuary doesn't
- 1:55Speaker 1: consider itself a sex club, but when asked whether members
- 1:57Speaker 1: can have sex on site, he said, quote, if consenting
- 2:01Speaker 1: adults decide to connect.
- 2:02Speaker 3: In that way, it's up to them.
- 2:04Speaker 1: The Sanctuary doesn't allow sex workers to ply their trade
- 2:07Speaker 1: on the premises, nor does it charge extra for single men.
- 2:10Speaker 3: To joy, as many swingers clubs do.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Instead, the Sanctuary blends metaphysical spirituality, self help culture, ethical
- 2:19Speaker 1: non monogamy values, and proclaimed lack of hierarchy to form
- 2:22Speaker 1: a distinctly American form of spirituality. As with many new
- 2:27Speaker 1: religious movements, the organization's structure whether it legally qualifies as
- 2:31Speaker 1: a church, have raised questions among regulators like the IRS
- 2:35Speaker 1: and the State of Utah. Despite having the title of
- 2:38Speaker 1: board chairman, Swinson said leadership is given to the people.
- 2:42Speaker 1: When asked why he started the Sanctuary, Swenson said he
- 2:45Speaker 1: and his wife were exposed to ethical non monogamy about
- 2:49Speaker 1: three years ago. They are former members of the Church
- 2:52Speaker 1: of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. On its website,
- 2:57Speaker 1: Sanctuary celebrates the growth and joy that comes from nurturing
- 3:01Speaker 1: multiple loving relationships.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I I I get from the tone of your voice
- 3:05Speaker 2: that you're gonna you're going to discriminate against this religion.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Apparently because Utah has such freedom of religion attitudes and
- 3:17Speaker 1: laws that this is what, uh, this is what they
- 3:22Speaker 1: are taking advantage of the sanctuaries of beneficiary of Utah's
- 3:26Speaker 1: Religious Freedom Restoration Act. And like other new religious movements, Uh,
- 3:30Speaker 1: they they've leveraged federal court decisions that say, yes we.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Can so no one, so no one is forced to
- 3:37Speaker 2: go there. No, And then so people can go there
- 3:40Speaker 2: if they would like to.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Yes, And it's a it's a it's a membership.
- 3:43Speaker 2: And they can pay their tithing.
- 3:45Speaker 3: That's what they say, they call it. That's it's no different, Yeah.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Just tithe and yeah. Okay.
- 3:51Speaker 1: But the way my friend described me what she had
- 3:54Speaker 1: learned about it is it's a sex club.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I guess is My guess is that they probably can't
- 4:03Speaker 2: get a liquor license.
- 4:05Speaker 3: No, they can't but you can. But it is it
- 4:08Speaker 3: is a private events space.
- 4:10Speaker 2: So you can bring you could bring something if you want.
- 4:14Speaker 3: They have a bar where they serve like mixers. You
- 4:18Speaker 3: bring your own.
- 4:19Speaker 2: They got coked. So it's kind of like eyes wide shut.
- 4:22Speaker 3: I mean, really mind it.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Which was, by the way, when I finally watched, I
- 4:28Speaker 2: didn't watch the whole movie because it was too boring.
- 4:31Speaker 2: But if anybody, how could you make all of that
- 4:34Speaker 2: nudity and all that sex so boring that it was
- 4:37Speaker 2: almost unwatchable.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Now here's what I was wondering, and it's happening. Texts
- 4:42Speaker 1: coming in. I'm a member of the sanctuary. There's a
- 4:45Speaker 1: lot to do there besides have sex. Oh, somebody else says,
- 4:48Speaker 1: I've been to the sanctuary many times.
- 4:50Speaker 3: It's a great place. This is what I was wondering.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I'm the people like you can play pool and have sex.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I don't know, I I I mean, this is consenting
- 5:02Speaker 1: adult stuff and I don't care.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I think that.
- 5:05Speaker 1: But but okay, they say thousands of people, lots of
- 5:08Speaker 1: people belong there.
- 5:10Speaker 3: So you go to this place and then these.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Are people that you see out in your community like
- 5:17Speaker 1: you might.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Be in the grocery store next to somebody who's been
- 5:21Speaker 2: having stacks.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Oh that you've that you've seen, or that you've.
- 5:27Speaker 2: That you've seen what.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Apparently you can watch, you can join in, you.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Can, okay. And so so if you run into somebody
- 5:37Speaker 2: at the grocery store that you've that you've seen there
- 5:41Speaker 2: and that maybe you've joined in there, that would not
- 5:43Speaker 2: be uncomfortable because you both know, Oh hi, yeah, hi,
- 5:49Speaker 2: oh hi, nice to see you. I didn't know you
- 5:51Speaker 2: shopped at this smith. Have you have you? Have you
- 5:55Speaker 2: looked at the have you looked at the grapefruit? They're
- 5:57Speaker 2: really good?
- 6:00Speaker 3: I just I help me.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Out people though, because okay, people, I can help you out.
- 6:07Speaker 2: It's not for you, no, no, but help me understand. Okay.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Say you're I don't know, in.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Your in your thirties or forties, okay, and you as
- 6:19Speaker 1: a couple deciding this is what you're gonna do on
- 6:23Speaker 1: a Saturday night, what does your relationship look like five
- 6:28Speaker 1: ten years from now?
- 6:30Speaker 3: Like is this an? Is this enough? Or do you
- 6:33Speaker 3: get bored with this? And then where do you go
- 6:35Speaker 3: from there? This is an honest question.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I have that I don't but how do you know
- 6:41Speaker 1: if you're doing this for excitement.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Is it still exciting five ten years from now?
- 6:47Speaker 2: What is? Maybe you'll only know five or ten years
- 6:49Speaker 2: from now.
- 6:50Speaker 3: I just don't know where you go from there.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Maybe maybe why do you have to go anywhere? From there?
- 6:54Speaker 2: You can just keep doing this or not or you know,
- 6:58Speaker 2: well that to just the yes, yes, yes, well that
- 7:04Speaker 2: was an interesting time of our life. You know, that
- 7:07Speaker 2: was something that we did and now we don't do that.
- 7:10Speaker 2: What does it say about me? Though? That The only
- 7:12Speaker 2: concern I have is that they've a changed They've achieved tax.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Free status their religion.
- 7:20Speaker 2: That's that's the problem that I have. That's the I
- 7:22Speaker 2: think maybe that you're right, Terry, that that would be
- 7:25Speaker 2: the only problem I would have with it. That got
- 7:27Speaker 2: to be paying damn patches like everybody, Yeah, how dare
- 7:30Speaker 2: they get tax free? They're making making making making money
- 7:33Speaker 2: off of people having sex. Because you know me, I've
- 7:36Speaker 2: always said, tax all them, all the religions. I mean,
- 7:38Speaker 2: they tax trails, the strip club, I'm sure.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Yeah, because that's a that's a business.
- 7:45Speaker 2: That's and this is a business too. We had a
- 7:47Speaker 2: couple of friends who refer to that as a church,
- 7:49Speaker 2: but it's a business masquerading as a church. But uh,
- 7:55Speaker 2: but but ga, Gina, it's not for you. And there
- 7:57Speaker 2: is no amount of discussion that anybody could have with
- 8:03Speaker 2: you that you would ever understand.
- 8:05Speaker 3: No, And like I said, it's you're consenting adults do whatever.
- 8:09Speaker 2: You want, don't.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I don't think that this shouldn't exist. That's not what
- 8:12Speaker 3: I'm saying.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I'm just as as an individual trying to wrap my
- 8:16Speaker 1: head around how how this works.
- 8:20Speaker 2: You won't because that's not the way you think it's.
- 8:25Speaker 2: You do this all the time. You say, help me
- 8:26Speaker 2: understand why this and this and this and this, and
- 8:28Speaker 2: you never will understand because you don't understand it because
- 8:32Speaker 2: you don't think that way. And you have and you
- 8:35Speaker 2: I don't think you have much ability to put yourself
- 8:38Speaker 2: in the mind of somebody who does. Now for me,
- 8:43Speaker 2: that kind of thing was is not for me. I
- 8:45Speaker 2: wouldn't but I but I get it.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Somebody says Billiard's music and dancing, socializing, phone booths, it's
- 8:52Speaker 1: a very inclusive body. Positive consent is paramount. It's a
- 8:56Speaker 1: nice incredibly classier than clubs that you find in Vegas
- 8:59Speaker 1: or elsewhere.
- 9:00Speaker 3: That's what this this friend is telling me too, that.
- 9:02Speaker 1: She heard that people fly here to go to like
- 9:07Speaker 1: it's a it's a tourist destination.
- 9:09Speaker 2: It's initation only right there, and it sounds like it's
- 9:13Speaker 2: very very well regulated as well. I mean, it's just I.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Mean, you have to be invited.
- 9:20Speaker 2: I think.
- 9:21Speaker 3: I don't think just anybody can.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I want to know how much the tithing is, how
- 9:25Speaker 2: much is it to do it, and then maybe I'll
- 9:28Speaker 2: consider it. I don't.
- 9:29Speaker 3: I don't don't think it says in this story how
- 9:31Speaker 3: much how much it is.
- 9:33Speaker 2: They probably try and not publicize that too much.
- 9:36Speaker 3: You have to be invited, I guess. And all right,
- 9:42Speaker 3: so I don't know.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Like I said, it's just the text free status. This
- 9:45Speaker 2: is the only thing that bothers me about this Brad
- 9:50Speaker 2: Wheeler saying we had to start up a nude billiards league.
- 9:54Speaker 2: No shouldn't.
- 9:55Speaker 3: No, it shouldn't.
- 9:57Speaker 2: See again, you can't wrap your head around that at all.
- 10:00Speaker 2: It
