- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome to Jagsam. I'm Pennanni Stevens, Brian Sexton, John Oser
- 0:20Speaker 1: with me our final jags Am of the regular season.
- 0:24Speaker 1: We're gonna talk things out. There's a coaching search coming
- 0:26Speaker 1: up and a lot going on in the off season.
- 0:28Speaker 1: So big thing number one and so it begins. Doug
- 0:30Speaker 1: Peterson released of his duties as head coach, so that
- 0:33Speaker 1: means being now looking for a new head coach and
- 0:35Speaker 1: leader of this team. Treen Balki says, the search is
- 0:37Speaker 1: going to start right away.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I think you think the short answer to that is yes.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I mean, we're gonna move quickly to get some people
- 0:45Speaker 2: lined up to talk to How long that process takes.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I think Sean mentioned it's going to take as long
- 0:51Speaker 2: as it takes to identify the right individual. And is
- 0:54Speaker 2: that one interview? Is that two interviews? I think you
- 0:57Speaker 2: know we're going to do our due diligence and be
- 1:00Speaker 2: very thorough in this process.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Brian, we already know eight people that they're bringing in
- 1:06Speaker 1: for interview or they've requested interviews that I should say,
- 1:08Speaker 1: but talk us through this timeline a little bit because
- 1:10Speaker 1: it is different to seear than we see.
- 1:11Speaker 3: In the past.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Well, I think that this process is going to be
- 1:14Speaker 4: slower than people have imagined because the league is intentionally
- 1:17Speaker 4: trying to push back the hiring date. They're trying to
- 1:20Speaker 4: be more inclusive and have more potential candidates. Obviously, that's
- 1:24Speaker 4: been something they've been working at for quite a lot
- 1:26Speaker 4: of time. Guy, And you can't do an in person
- 1:30Speaker 4: interview with someone who's under contract until after the divisional rounds,
- 1:35Speaker 4: so not at next week, but the week after next week.
- 1:37Speaker 5: Is the first week that you can do in person interviews.
- 1:40Speaker 5: So everything is going to be virtual.
- 1:41Speaker 4: I think the window is Wednesday, Thursday through Sunday this week,
- 1:46Speaker 4: and then it tightens down a little bit, so a
- 1:48Speaker 4: lot of teams are scrambling to get this first round
- 1:53Speaker 4: of virtual interviews in before that deadline hits. John, this
- 1:56Speaker 4: is a process that looks like it might take all
- 1:58Speaker 4: the way up till Super Bowl for most of these twas,
- 2:00Speaker 4: So that's kind of the way the league is setting
- 2:02Speaker 4: it up well.
- 2:02Speaker 6: I think people who followed the last Jaguars coaching search
- 2:06Speaker 6: sort of have a feel for the pace. Doug Peterson interviewed.
- 2:09Speaker 6: I forget the exact timeline, but it was a long time.
- 2:11Speaker 6: A month between first interview and actual hiring. So the
- 2:15Speaker 6: league has tried to do that with the idea of
- 2:18Speaker 6: being to allow the divisional round coaches Championship game coach
- 2:24Speaker 6: is a legitimate a legitimate chance to be in the mix,
- 2:27Speaker 6: and frankly, it's worked. The process has slowed. Five or
- 2:30Speaker 6: six years ago, it felt like the high you could
- 2:36Speaker 6: interview a head coach and there'd be guys announced like
- 2:38Speaker 6: next week. I don't anticipate that, and that's good because
- 2:42Speaker 6: it does allow teams to take their time and try
- 2:45Speaker 6: to find the right guy. And Brian, that's the most
- 2:47Speaker 6: important thing is finding the right guy, not the first guy.
- 2:49Speaker 4: I think so, And there is also the possibility that
- 2:52Speaker 4: names can be added to that list of eight. Someone
- 2:54Speaker 4: along the way comes to mind, someone that you maybe
- 2:57Speaker 4: not have heard a lot about, or that isn't in
- 2:59Speaker 4: the pup guy as much. And we'll both say this, John,
- 3:02Speaker 4: it's about finding the right guy and if that takes
- 3:06Speaker 4: thirty days, she'll be it. But I don't think the
- 3:08Speaker 4: Jaguars will behind the curve at all because every team
- 3:11Speaker 4: is following these new guidelines.
- 3:13Speaker 1: They are, which leads into our second big thing, which
- 3:15Speaker 1: is top spot. There's six openings right now for head
- 3:18Speaker 1: coaches around the NFL, and obviously we know what the
- 3:21Speaker 1: Jaguars have going on in their division and what's been there. John,
- 3:24Speaker 1: How appealing is this opening compared to some of the
- 3:26Speaker 1: other ones.
- 3:27Speaker 6: Well, I think it's appealing in the sense that you
- 3:29Speaker 6: have an owner who supports, You have an owner who
- 3:32Speaker 6: doesn't meddle.
- 3:33Speaker 2: You have.
- 3:36Speaker 6: An owner who will clearly spend whatever it takes. You've
- 3:39Speaker 6: got Florida, you have this building we're sitting in the MEC.
- 3:44Speaker 6: I said yesterday and I'll continue saying it. I think
- 3:47Speaker 6: the job is as appealing as the candidate likes Trevor Lawrence,
- 3:53Speaker 6: and I think most candidates will like that very much.
- 3:59Speaker 6: You have a young quarterback. He's been injured, but you know,
- 4:02Speaker 6: before that injury in twenty three playing at a high level.
- 4:06Speaker 6: If he scratched the surface, there's something there. Brian, I
- 4:10Speaker 6: think if you're a Trevor Lawrence guy, it's the best job.
- 4:15Speaker 6: I don't know how all eight of these guys feel
- 4:17Speaker 6: about that, and I think that'll determine what people think
- 4:19Speaker 6: about the job.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Well, we've talked a lot about you know, what the
- 4:21Speaker 4: Jaguars had to offer the quarterback, the salary cap, the
- 4:25Speaker 4: twenty draft picks in the next two years, sparkling new facilities,
- 4:28Speaker 4: an owner that won't meddle and will spend. But when
- 4:31Speaker 4: you look at the other jobs open compared to this one,
- 4:35Speaker 4: you see that the Jets don't have a quarterback, and
- 4:37Speaker 4: by the way, they don't have a quarterback. Neither do
- 4:40Speaker 4: the Raiders. This is not a good year to need
- 4:44Speaker 4: a quarterback. And so when you look at the quarterback issue,
- 4:48Speaker 4: it's front and center number one. If you believe that
- 4:50Speaker 4: Trevor Lawrence has good football in front of him, all
- 4:53Speaker 4: the other reasons that I mentioned, and then what John
- 4:55Speaker 4: talked about the quarterback make this his appealing a job
- 4:58Speaker 4: as possible. I mean, you can look at all the
- 5:00Speaker 4: other circumstances and situations, whether it's the Bears and playing
- 5:03Speaker 4: in that hyper competitive NFC North Division or the Saints
- 5:07Speaker 4: who have a salary cap disaster sitting in front of them,
- 5:12Speaker 4: this job is as attractive as any.
- 5:15Speaker 1: All Right, Our final big thing is going to be
- 5:17Speaker 1: EVP That was mentioned during the Executive vice president that
- 5:20Speaker 1: was mentioned during the media availability with Shadkhan and Trent
- 5:23Speaker 1: bal Key, and Shad con was asked whether he'd consider
- 5:26Speaker 1: hiring also an executive vice president.
- 5:29Speaker 7: You know, it's got to be the right person, Okay,
- 5:32Speaker 7: and it's got to be And frankly, I mean we
- 5:37Speaker 7: need to add some people. I mean we're lean, but
- 5:42Speaker 7: you know, if you look at again on you know,
- 5:44Speaker 7: the football side, I mean we've added people, We've changed
- 5:48Speaker 7: some people, and if we find the right person.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Definitely, Ryan, how promising is this is real possibility to
- 5:57Speaker 1: kind of get someone else in there to help make
- 5:58Speaker 1: some of these decisions.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Well, I mean, to me, it's very promising because I
- 6:01Speaker 4: want Tony BISSELLI right. I know that that's a name
- 6:04Speaker 4: that's been bantered about. And listen, it worked for the
- 6:07Speaker 4: Ravens with Ozzie Newsom, It's worked for the Broncos with
- 6:11Speaker 4: John Elway. It has worked with John Lynch in that
- 6:14Speaker 4: role in San Francisco where that person who represents but
- 6:19Speaker 4: Lynch doesn't represent the Niners like Tony would represent the Jaguars.
- 6:22Speaker 4: But I think he would be a really good person
- 6:25Speaker 4: to put into that role. And I think it's something
- 6:28Speaker 4: that he would excel at. And so if the possibility
- 6:31Speaker 4: exists that Tony can come in in a role that
- 6:33Speaker 4: has an impact on improving the football operation. And more
- 6:37Speaker 4: importantly than that, John setting the Jaguar away. I mean,
- 6:40Speaker 4: we hear about how the Steelers do it, and how
- 6:43Speaker 4: the Patriots do it, and how these championship franchises do it.
- 6:47Speaker 4: We don't have that here in Jacksonville right now. I
- 6:49Speaker 4: think Tony Biselli would be a good person to be
- 6:51Speaker 4: able to institute that because he was here during the
- 6:54Speaker 4: Golden era. He has the yellow jacket, the gold jacket
- 6:58Speaker 4: that signifies his level of excellence as a player, and
- 7:02Speaker 4: he's around the National Football League, and he cares. He
- 7:04Speaker 4: cares a lot. In fact, I would suggest that there
- 7:06Speaker 4: isn't anybody that Shod could hire that would care about
- 7:10Speaker 4: the franchise and guard it as much as he would
- 7:12Speaker 4: other than Tony Boselli.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Tony be a home run.
- 7:17Speaker 6: I answer your question Kai, how big of a possibility
- 7:20Speaker 6: is that? I don't think Shod would have mentioned it
- 7:23Speaker 6: Monday if he wasn't thinking about it. If you recall
- 7:26Speaker 6: Shod in the interview process when he hired Tom Coffin
- 7:29Speaker 6: for this. When he goes into this interview process, he
- 7:32Speaker 6: often is trying to figure out.
- 7:35Speaker 3: What will work the best.
- 7:37Speaker 6: He's often listening to candidates and trying to figure out, Okay,
- 7:41Speaker 6: with the people available, how can I make this work.
- 7:44Speaker 6: He's an engineer member, so he likes to figure out
- 7:48Speaker 6: the system that will work. So I think the fact
- 7:51Speaker 6: that he's talking about it Monday saying if he finds
- 7:54Speaker 6: the right person, I think Tony's the right person. I
- 7:57Speaker 6: don't know how Shod feels about that because he doesn't
- 7:59Speaker 6: really talk talk about that sort of thing, but uh,
- 8:01Speaker 6: I do think it's an absolute possibility. Uh, because it
- 8:05Speaker 6: was mentioned on Monday in a prominent situation.
- 8:07Speaker 1: We'll keep an eye on it throughout the coming weeks
- 8:08Speaker 1: as well as through this coaching search. So we have
- 8:10Speaker 1: eight names of people that are they are hoping to
- 8:13Speaker 1: come in. We're gonna talk about them coming up after
- 8:14Speaker 1: the break. Tag XAM brought to you by Field to
- 8:25Speaker 1: Auto Group, Jacksonville's premiere luxury auto group. Head over to
- 8:28Speaker 1: Field Auto dot com.
- 8:31Speaker 8: I don't really know.
- 8:33Speaker 9: I know we're a young team, you know, so I
- 8:35Speaker 9: would definitely love to have some one, you know, kind
- 8:38Speaker 9: of relatable to us, you know, in a sense, you know,
- 8:41Speaker 9: somebody with some passion. I love for somebody with some
- 8:43Speaker 9: passion and somebody just showing them about what we got
- 8:46Speaker 9: going on here.
- 8:47Speaker 10: Just somebody wants to win. Just somebody wants to be
- 8:49Speaker 10: around a guys, somebody who's who's eat it fired up,
- 8:52Speaker 10: uh with the opportunity to uh just help us uh
- 8:55Speaker 10: go and ultimately win the Super Bowl when I first
- 8:57Speaker 10: to go here and uh that's what we all want
- 8:58Speaker 10: and uh for somebody want somewhere.
- 9:00Speaker 11: I think that's a tough question to answer right now.
- 9:04Speaker 11: I just think obviously we're all processing the end of
- 9:08Speaker 11: the season. We're all reflecting on just us ourselves individually
- 9:14Speaker 11: and as a team, because like I said, we all
- 9:16Speaker 11: had a hand in this. So I think the important
- 9:18Speaker 11: thing right now is to just reflect personally on where
- 9:22Speaker 11: you can do better going forward, all the learning opportunities
- 9:27Speaker 11: that were taken from this year and really focus on that.
- 9:31Speaker 1: And the Jaguars players clearing out their lockers this week
- 9:33Speaker 1: sounding off about what they would like to see in
- 9:35Speaker 1: their new head coach, Christian Kirk always wise pointing out
- 9:38Speaker 1: that there's a lot of other stuff that needs to
- 9:40Speaker 1: change as well as in just a coaching thing. Players
- 9:43Speaker 1: have to get on board as well. But we've now
- 9:44Speaker 1: got eight names coming out, you guys, that were announced
- 9:48Speaker 1: by the team that they want to have an interview
- 9:51Speaker 1: request with them. So I split the list. It's about
- 9:53Speaker 1: half offensive coordinators, half defensive guys or former head coaches.
- 9:57Speaker 1: So which way do we Is it stylistic? But the
- 10:00Speaker 1: person what kind of goes into this process? Brian, when
- 10:02Speaker 1: you're looking at something like.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Well, I think John and I probably both take the
- 10:05Speaker 4: same approach on this is it doesn't matter to me
- 10:08Speaker 4: whether he's an offensive coach or a defensive coach, or
- 10:10Speaker 4: what scheme he runs. What matters to me is that
- 10:12Speaker 4: he's a head coach, that he's that leader that everyone
- 10:15Speaker 4: will follow, that he has.
- 10:16Speaker 5: The very specific vision.
- 10:18Speaker 4: You know, the Lions are the great example because everyone's
- 10:21Speaker 4: looking at them and what they've done is unbelievable. Turning
- 10:24Speaker 4: that thing around. Dan Campbell was the tight ends coach
- 10:26Speaker 4: and assistant head coach in New Orleans. He was not
- 10:28Speaker 4: a hot name. In fact, when the Lions hired him,
- 10:31Speaker 4: people were scratching their head, thinking, really, but look at
- 10:34Speaker 4: what he's done. I mean, for all that Ben Johnson
- 10:37Speaker 4: and Aaron Glenn, who are both on that list have
- 10:39Speaker 4: done on their sides of the ball.
- 10:40Speaker 5: The culture change.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Which we all experienced when we were there last summer
- 10:43Speaker 4: and spent the week practicing with them. The culture change
- 10:46Speaker 4: is due to Dan Campbell, and that is very much
- 10:50Speaker 4: a philosophy, a style, more than what side of the
- 10:52Speaker 4: ball he's on.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
- 10:55Speaker 6: I did a Jaguars dot Com Head Coach Tracker, which
- 10:59Speaker 6: you can find on Jaguars because that's why it's called
- 11:01Speaker 6: the Jaguars dot Com Head Coach Tracker, And in part
- 11:06Speaker 6: of it, I'm listing offensive rankings and defensive rankings.
- 11:10Speaker 3: To me, those matter not a bit.
- 11:12Speaker 6: It's great that a Ben Johnson, for example, is leading
- 11:16Speaker 6: the Lions offense to these great numbers. Can the guy
- 11:20Speaker 6: stand in front of the room. Do players when the
- 11:23Speaker 6: guy stops talking and they go off to themselves, do
- 11:26Speaker 6: they believe in that guy or are they going If
- 11:30Speaker 6: you're going, meh, then you can't win. So I think
- 11:34Speaker 6: we're talking about the same thing. They have to be
- 11:36Speaker 6: able to set the tone, they have to have the
- 11:39Speaker 6: vision for the franchise, and the players have to believe
- 11:42Speaker 6: in the message. And I believe that that guy is
- 11:45Speaker 6: the right guy, and that's.
- 11:47Speaker 3: What most of the players.
- 11:49Speaker 6: I think we're kind of stumbling around trying to say
- 11:51Speaker 6: they want the right guy and the guy they can
- 11:53Speaker 6: believe in, whether they're an offensive guy defensive guy. The
- 11:55Speaker 6: only caveat to all that is in this day and age,
- 12:00Speaker 6: I do believe there is an advantage if you find
- 12:02Speaker 6: the right offensive guy, then if the no matter who
- 12:09Speaker 6: the coordinator is, the system can stay the same and
- 12:12Speaker 6: the quarterback can have continuity in that system. That's not
- 12:17Speaker 6: to say you have to have that, but if you
- 12:20Speaker 6: can find that, I think that is an advantage over
- 12:22Speaker 6: a ten year period. But guess what, if you don't
- 12:24Speaker 6: find the right guy right then all that doesn't matter.
- 12:27Speaker 4: When you're searching like the Jaguars have been searching. What's
- 12:29Speaker 4: important to note is that if I'm interviewing somebody, I
- 12:32Speaker 4: want to know who are going to bring on your staff?
- 12:34Speaker 5: Right.
- 12:36Speaker 4: I didn't realize this, but Ben Johnson did not go
- 12:38Speaker 4: as the offensive coordinator to Detroit. He went from Miami,
- 12:42Speaker 4: where he was a receiver's coach, to be a receivers
- 12:43Speaker 4: coach in Detroit, and they fired Anthony Lynn, who was
- 12:47Speaker 4: here's one point, as the running backs coach, and they
- 12:51Speaker 4: identified him as a talent, good coach, and then of
- 12:54Speaker 4: course gave him the opportunity and he grew.
- 12:57Speaker 5: So I want to know who are you bringing with you?
- 12:59Speaker 4: Who are the exciting, dynamic, talented coaches that you will
- 13:04Speaker 4: attract to come be part of your staff.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I think we might recognize one of them, considering in
- 13:09Speaker 1: quarterbacks coach in Detroit. I'm sure he wouldn't mind coming
- 13:11Speaker 1: back to Jacksonville.
- 13:12Speaker 5: You're talking about Mark Renold.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Oh maybe that guy?
- 13:14Speaker 6: Yeah, And Mark's at that stage. He's been a quarterbacks
- 13:17Speaker 6: coach for a couple of years. You know, he's at
- 13:20Speaker 6: that point where next job as a coordinator.
- 13:23Speaker 3: I could see Mark as a head coach some day.
- 13:25Speaker 5: So he's been a head coach before at a tech.
- 13:31Speaker 4: It's it's just it's it's interesting this process and how
- 13:36Speaker 4: long and detailed it is, and everyone's looking for answers immediately.
- 13:40Speaker 4: But they're gonna go through that list with a fine
- 13:42Speaker 4: tooth calm. I know two of those guys personally because.
- 13:44Speaker 5: They were here.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Robert Sala, who I thought was was going to be
- 13:50Speaker 4: a star with the Jets. I mean, he's such a leader.
- 13:53Speaker 4: It goes to show you the circumstances have something to
- 13:55Speaker 4: do with it, because he never had the quarterback that
- 13:57Speaker 4: gave him that opportunity, and when he thought he did
- 13:59Speaker 4: with Aaron Rogers was hurt in the first series of
- 14:02Speaker 4: his tenure.
- 14:03Speaker 3: There.
- 14:05Speaker 5: Good football coach.
- 14:06Speaker 4: I don't know whether he's seriously in the mix on
- 14:09Speaker 4: this one, but a good coach. And then Todd Munkin,
- 14:12Speaker 4: who you know, left here and went to college football
- 14:14Speaker 4: Oklahoma State, Southern miss and then Georgia and then has
- 14:19Speaker 4: reinvented himself with.
- 14:22Speaker 5: You know, maybe the MVP in Baltimore.
- 14:26Speaker 4: And again a guy who's been in front of the
- 14:29Speaker 4: room before and is a really solid human being, a
- 14:32Speaker 4: kind of guy that people will trust.
- 14:35Speaker 5: So I liked seeing both of those names.
- 14:36Speaker 1: On there named a former head coach, named coordinator, a
- 14:39Speaker 1: first time offensive coordinator and Ben Johnson, that's a hot
- 14:41Speaker 1: name out there. Is there a preference of having experience
- 14:45Speaker 1: already as a head coach? Obviously we've seen both here.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Obviously Erin Meyer comes in to get Doug who's already
- 14:49Speaker 1: been there, done that, been around for a long time.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Does that matter or is it mostly what you can
- 14:53Speaker 1: bring and what your plan is?
- 14:54Speaker 3: Yeah, if you know that these are all great questions.
- 14:59Speaker 6: If you're the right guy, then at some point you
- 15:02Speaker 6: have to you know, just because you haven't done it
- 15:04Speaker 6: doesn't mean you can't go do it.
- 15:06Speaker 5: You can't never done it.
- 15:07Speaker 6: So I do think there is a appeal to having
- 15:14Speaker 6: a guy who's the adult in the room, which Todd
- 15:17Speaker 6: Mounkin unfortunately Brian. I think he's the only one even
- 15:21Speaker 6: close to our age. So and I think there's an
- 15:26Speaker 6: appeal to that because you've seen it before and there
- 15:29Speaker 6: are challenges a head coach. Any head coach will tell
- 15:31Speaker 6: you the first time they figure it out, it's like, oh,
- 15:33Speaker 6: this is not the jobs I've had before. This is
- 15:37Speaker 6: every day there's somebody in my office with a problem.
- 15:41Speaker 6: But my guess is it will be a younger guy
- 15:46Speaker 6: because that feels like the trend and the quarterback connection.
- 15:51Speaker 6: I just have to believe that there will be a
- 15:52Speaker 6: quarterback connection and it feels like a coordinator type deal
- 15:58Speaker 6: is going to happen.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Both of of the guys in Detroit interest me because
- 16:02Speaker 4: they will have been shaped by the circumstances. They will
- 16:05Speaker 4: have seen a rough start. I think Dan Camill went
- 16:08Speaker 4: o to eight to get started. Yeah, and they will
- 16:11Speaker 4: have seen a franchise that was used to they had
- 16:13Speaker 4: a losing culture be transformed into a juggernaut. I mean,
- 16:17Speaker 4: what they've got going there is incredible. So either of
- 16:20Speaker 4: those two guys and Aaron Glenn doesn't get the same
- 16:23Speaker 4: attention because that offense is just exploding. But you hear
- 16:28Speaker 4: the guys who work around Aaron Glenn and you think,
- 16:31Speaker 4: and Aaron's a guy that was here in two thousand
- 16:33Speaker 4: and seven. He was a part of that really good
- 16:35Speaker 4: defense that helped power the Jaguars to the divisional round
- 16:38Speaker 4: of the playoffs that year. And Jeff Loginman knows him
- 16:42Speaker 4: very well, A really an excellent football player, and I
- 16:45Speaker 4: told him excellent tactician and coach and a guy who
- 16:48Speaker 4: sure seems to have the personality to get up in
- 16:50Speaker 4: front of the room.
- 16:51Speaker 5: So I mean he's a feeling, Yeah, he's appealing.
- 16:53Speaker 6: He's a strong personality, Yeah, strong personality and has been
- 16:59Speaker 6: around a bit, so that would not be.
- 17:03Speaker 3: There would be a lot to like if that's the direction.
- 17:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:06Speaker 4: I mean, I think both coordinators in Detroit deserve the
- 17:08Speaker 4: kind of attention and the star next to their name
- 17:11Speaker 4: because of what they have been shaped by and the
- 17:14Speaker 4: way that they have grown both sides of the ball.
- 17:16Speaker 1: I think Glenn impressive as of late as well. What
- 17:18Speaker 1: he's been able to do with the injuries on defense,
- 17:20Speaker 1: and then for them to have that game against the
- 17:22Speaker 1: Vikings in the season. I mean, just that alone is
- 17:24Speaker 1: impressive to be able to have that many players behind
- 17:28Speaker 1: and come up and still play that well.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Well, when you lose a player like Aiden Hutchinson and
- 17:32Speaker 4: you don't make that, they trade for Zadaria Smith and
- 17:35Speaker 4: you bring him in, and I mean right away he
- 17:37Speaker 4: has an impact and that doesn't always happen, so I
- 17:39Speaker 4: mean he's obviously a guy who strategically gets it.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Just one more comment. We're looking at some of these
- 17:46Speaker 1: offensive coordinators that we want to come in, and just
- 17:49Speaker 1: because it's been a controversy in the past about play calling,
- 17:51Speaker 1: if you were making the decision and you were hiring
- 17:54Speaker 1: one of these offensive guys, would you want them to
- 17:56Speaker 1: be the primary play caller.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Maybe, But again the whole play calling thing.
- 18:09Speaker 6: That has to be the quarter the head coach's choice,
- 18:13Speaker 6: and it depends on how he feels about that system.
- 18:18Speaker 6: So sure, but again I don't get into the whole
- 18:22Speaker 6: play calling thing. This last year, I still.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Think it was overblown.
- 18:27Speaker 6: That guy has to be the direction of the offense,
- 18:30Speaker 6: and whatever coordinator you're gonna have. He's going to be
- 18:33Speaker 6: the I mean, whatever coach, he's going to be the
- 18:35Speaker 6: spirit of the offense. How he handles the mechanism, I
- 18:39Speaker 6: think you gotta leave up to him.
- 18:40Speaker 5: They all have such a influence.
- 18:41Speaker 4: I mean, I always thought that the Press Taylor Doug
- 18:45Speaker 4: Peterson stuff was overblown because Press wasn't gonna do what
- 18:47Speaker 4: Doug didn't want him to do with his offense, and
- 18:49Speaker 4: Doug didn't spend any time on defense.
- 18:51Speaker 5: Doug was in the offensive.
- 18:53Speaker 3: They were in lockstep.
- 18:53Speaker 5: They were in lockstown.
- 18:54Speaker 6: The new guy will be in lockstep if he's an
- 18:57Speaker 6: offensive coach. If it's been uh Van Johnson and Mark's
- 19:02Speaker 6: the coordinator, for example, I don't know that'll be. Then
- 19:04Speaker 6: Ben will probably call the plays with Mark or vice versa.
- 19:08Speaker 6: But they'll be in each other's headset. They'll be on
- 19:11Speaker 6: each other's desks all week, right, So it'll be sort
- 19:14Speaker 6: of the same dynamic, except whatever it is, well probably.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Made clearer than it was in twenty twenty four.
- 19:20Speaker 4: And it's worth pointing out in the Great Era of
- 19:23Speaker 4: the Jaguars, where Tom Coughlin was the head coach and
- 19:25Speaker 4: he had Mark Brunell and Jimmy Smith and Fred Taylor,
- 19:28Speaker 4: and I mean they were loaded.
- 19:31Speaker 5: Tom didn't called places right.
- 19:32Speaker 4: He had a heavy hand in what went on, but
- 19:35Speaker 4: he had, you know, Kevin Gilbride or Chris Palmer. I mean,
- 19:38Speaker 4: he had those guys who ran the offense for him.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Because he wanted to focus on being the head coach.
- 19:44Speaker 4: He wanted to be engaged on the sideline in the
- 19:46Speaker 4: entire game and not over talking to the quarterback or
- 19:49Speaker 4: the offensive line. Now he'd go do that, but for
- 19:52Speaker 4: a head coach, you've got to be engaged with the
- 19:55Speaker 4: team on the field and the officials and the clock.
- 19:59Speaker 4: And I think, think I want my head coach to
- 20:02Speaker 4: bring in an offensive coordinator who is strong enough that
- 20:05Speaker 4: he's confident enough in that he can say, this is
- 20:07Speaker 4: what we're gonna do, and then he goes and does
- 20:09Speaker 4: what a head coach does, trust him to execute.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Very good.
- 20:12Speaker 1: All right, we'll be obviously following the story for a while.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Coming up, we're gona do a little this or that
- 20:16Speaker 1: after break. For eleven years, dream Finders Homes has been
- 20:26Speaker 1: proud to call themselves the official home builder of the
- 20:28Speaker 1: Jacksonville Jaguars. Do is a dreamfinders homes dot Com for
- 20:30Speaker 1: all of the available inventory and go jag I.
- 20:34Speaker 7: Think so, I mean, if our defense would improve, you know,
- 20:38Speaker 7: get to the middle of the pact. But we were
- 20:41Speaker 7: watch to intend this year. I mean, how many of
- 20:43Speaker 7: those games you know we could win? And I think
- 20:48Speaker 7: the schemes on offense just being less predictable. I think,
- 20:54Speaker 7: you know, we could be more productive on offense, and
- 20:59Speaker 7: we have the ability through the draft coming up and
- 21:02Speaker 7: salary cap to be able to you know, use that
- 21:05Speaker 7: to get more specific players we were seeking. So I mean,
- 21:09Speaker 7: I expect this, you know, for us to have success
- 21:13Speaker 7: very quickly.
- 21:14Speaker 1: This oh this, oh hey, a little this or that
- 21:19Speaker 1: shot kind expecting a quick turnaround here, but we got
- 21:21Speaker 1: to figure out exactly what went wrong. Obviously there's going
- 21:23Speaker 1: to be a new head coach, new leader in charge,
- 21:25Speaker 1: but some of the players weighed in earlier this week
- 21:28Speaker 1: about some issues that they saw throughout the season.
- 21:32Speaker 12: I don't think we had enough synergy as a group.
- 21:35Speaker 12: I think there were times where certain guys are playing
- 21:37Speaker 12: their butt off, and as a group, we didn't all
- 21:39Speaker 12: show up at the same time. That's kind of what
- 21:41Speaker 12: it felt like. It was like trying to cover for
- 21:43Speaker 12: one guy not doing his job and then he gets
- 21:45Speaker 12: out of position and that kind of was like this
- 21:47Speaker 12: went down to.
- 21:47Speaker 8: Total Bowl for us, it's this we have to learn
- 21:49Speaker 8: how to win and learn how to take winning. Like
- 21:52Speaker 8: obviously we know how to win games, but when it
- 21:54Speaker 8: comes to being consistent with winning in the NFL, you
- 21:56Speaker 8: have to bring it week in and week out, and
- 21:58Speaker 8: sometimes it's just certain sacrifice that certain players or individuals
- 22:02Speaker 8: how to make.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Similar things are seen throughout miss assignments, you know, putting
- 22:07Speaker 1: in that effort, getting that full buy in.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Jon. This is stuff we've been talking about.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Yes, that's something a coach needs to put into place,
- 22:14Speaker 1: but players have to buy in as well. So is
- 22:16Speaker 1: there plenty of blame to go around? Is it one
- 22:18Speaker 1: more than the other?
- 22:18Speaker 6: With that, I think it's plenty of blame to go around,
- 22:20Speaker 6: and you know, I think the coach is responsible for it,
- 22:25Speaker 6: But I said all season, I think the players still
- 22:28Speaker 6: have to be a group that takes it by the
- 22:32Speaker 6: you know, the horns if you will, and decides they're
- 22:36Speaker 6: not going to lose. And I still think that there
- 22:38Speaker 6: has to be an element of that and to rally
- 22:42Speaker 6: around the coach. But I think there are they need
- 22:45Speaker 6: more key veteran players who are ready to be that guy.
- 22:49Speaker 4: I've heard culture defined by coaches as what you expect
- 22:54Speaker 4: and what you accept, right, and the expectation level has
- 22:58Speaker 4: to be set, and then you have to vigorously guard
- 23:03Speaker 4: that and it's the players that really guard it.
- 23:06Speaker 5: They have to buy in.
- 23:07Speaker 4: As you heard Treyvon Lawrence say, Treyvon Lawrence, Trevon Walker
- 23:11Speaker 4: say this week, you have to have the players that
- 23:15Speaker 4: will hold the standard that the coach sets. And again
- 23:18Speaker 4: I go back to what Dan Campbell talked about, and
- 23:20Speaker 4: there are many NFL films clips of him talking about
- 23:23Speaker 4: guys that belong in their locker room and guys that
- 23:25Speaker 4: belong as part of that process of what they were
- 23:28Speaker 4: doing in Detroit, and then all those players held everyone
- 23:31Speaker 4: to that standard. So that's really what you're looking for,
- 23:33Speaker 4: is the guy that can come in and set the
- 23:35Speaker 4: expectations that the players then.
- 23:37Speaker 5: Will say this is what we expected.
- 23:39Speaker 3: One another go into the season.
- 23:41Speaker 1: We're obviously going to see some player changes as well,
- 23:44Speaker 1: free agents and pending free agents, and possibly some of
- 23:48Speaker 1: the higher paid players that are entering the end of
- 23:51Speaker 1: their contracts, specifically Evan Ingram and Christian Kirk, both of
- 23:54Speaker 1: them weighing in on whether or not they want to
- 23:55Speaker 1: be here next year.
- 23:57Speaker 11: Yeah, I would love to be here, and I mean
- 24:00Speaker 11: I'm under contract still. Obviously there's other things that I
- 24:05Speaker 11: can't really control. So I'm just kind of focused on
- 24:09Speaker 11: being healthy again next next year, being healthy this offseason,
- 24:13Speaker 11: getting healthy, and just being the best player that I
- 24:16Speaker 11: can be, because you know, I feel like I've proven
- 24:19Speaker 11: that when I'm on the field. Uh, you know, I
- 24:22Speaker 11: am one of those players that is one of the
- 24:25Speaker 11: better ones on the field. And so I'm just looking
- 24:27Speaker 11: forward to to getting back to that. And I wanted
- 24:30Speaker 11: to be here in Jacksonville.
- 24:31Speaker 13: Like I said, there's a lot of changes that are
- 24:33Speaker 13: coming when you have seasons like this, So that's up
- 24:37Speaker 13: to God. I think, uh, you know, I I wanna
- 24:39Speaker 13: be here. I have a home here, and I think
- 24:42Speaker 13: this is this is a special place to do something
- 24:44Speaker 13: great and I wanna continue to grind to do that.
- 24:47Speaker 13: So but that's all out of my control. And uh,
- 24:51Speaker 13: like I said, this is unfortunate thing about having a
- 24:53Speaker 13: season like this. There's gonna be a lot of changes,
- 24:55Speaker 13: and uh, you never know what side you're gonna be on.
- 24:57Speaker 13: But definitely, uh, definitely wanna be here, John.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I think both these guys have been around long enough,
- 25:03Speaker 1: they know how this kind of works. Is it feasible
- 25:05Speaker 1: that both of them could be back next year?
- 25:07Speaker 3: Very doubtful that both of them are back. I hope
- 25:09Speaker 3: they're both back.
- 25:10Speaker 6: I mean, it's iffy that either of them are back,
- 25:12Speaker 6: really be but saying that it's because we don't know
- 25:15Speaker 6: what the direction of the coach who comes in, how
- 25:19Speaker 6: that's going to look.
- 25:19Speaker 3: There's meetings to be had. They will decide that.
- 25:23Speaker 6: Christian's salary cap number is huge, Evan's salary cap number
- 25:27Speaker 6: is big compared to Brenton strangers who came in, and
- 25:32Speaker 6: I don't know, I don't know that there's.
- 25:33Speaker 3: A emission of a drop off. I hope both they're back.
- 25:36Speaker 6: I'm afraid we're saying goodbye to at least one really
- 25:40Speaker 6: good guy.
- 25:40Speaker 4: They're total pros the way that they handle themselves on
- 25:44Speaker 4: the field and in the locker room. Christians to the
- 25:47Speaker 4: expensive point of his career. Right when you sign a
- 25:49Speaker 4: free agent, generally you're looking at a three year deal here,
- 25:52Speaker 4: no matter what the fourth does. But they're getting to,
- 25:54Speaker 4: you know, twenty four million dollars and he's a nine
- 25:56Speaker 4: million dollar savings and Kai there's not just gonna be
- 25:59Speaker 4: a chain the coaching suite. There's a change on the field.
- 26:02Speaker 4: There's a new number one. There's a new sheriff in
- 26:03Speaker 4: town and his number is number seven, and Brian Thomas
- 26:07Speaker 4: Junior has got to become the focal point of the offense.
- 26:11Speaker 4: Evan is a nineteen million dollar cap with about thirteen
- 26:15Speaker 4: million in dead money, so he's about six million in savings.
- 26:17Speaker 4: So you have to decide, you know, the offense how
- 26:20Speaker 4: it's going to run. But everybody has to understand that
- 26:23Speaker 4: the ball is going through seven now, not through Christian,
- 26:26Speaker 4: not through Evan.
- 26:28Speaker 1: It's gonna be some difficult decisions to be made that
- 26:29Speaker 1: will monitor throughout the off season. So stick with us.

- 26:49Speaker 14: I mean, I'm sorry for what I've came out and
- 26:52Speaker 14: did this season, but I mean it doesn't I mean
- 26:55Speaker 14: doesn't stop. Now. He's got to keep going keep pushing.
- 26:58Speaker 14: I mean, like someone I always trying to come in
- 27:01Speaker 14: and take your spot. So just come in, keep pushing it,
- 27:03Speaker 14: and keep putting your best before it each and every day.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Brian Thomas Jr. For sure the bright spot from this season.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Disappointment elsewhere, but he's been amazing. We do want to
- 27:12Speaker 1: talk quickly about this coaching search. We will be away
- 27:14Speaker 1: for about a month, so what's a realistic timeline you
- 27:17Speaker 1: guys think early February we might know who this might be.
- 27:19Speaker 6: Could be anywhere from January twentieth ish. Yeah, I'd be
- 27:23Speaker 6: early to post super Bowl, so you gotta keep.
- 27:27Speaker 3: The door upen.
- 27:28Speaker 4: I would think the week of the super Bowl might
- 27:29Speaker 4: be a good opportunity for them to make that sort.
- 27:31Speaker 5: Of an announcement.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Very good.
- 27:32Speaker 1: We'll be back the week after the super Bowl talking
- 27:34Speaker 1: about it and whoever the new head coaches. So enjoy
- 27:36Speaker 1: the off season.
