- 0:34Speaker 2: Today's guest is Rebecca Corey. Rebecca is a comic actress, writer,
- 0:38Speaker 2: and advocate. She's the founder of the Stand Up for
- 0:40Speaker 2: Pitts Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to educating, advocating, and saving
- 0:44Speaker 2: the lives of pitbull type dogs. She's also one of
- 0:47Speaker 2: the women who spoke out against Luisak in twenty seventeen.
- 0:51Speaker 3: But so, how did you two get reconnected?
- 0:53Speaker 4: Oh, I'll tell you.
- 0:55Speaker 5: Why don't you tell the story? Yeah? Tell the story.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Well, first I tell you I'm really proud of you, Chelsea,
- 1:02Speaker 4: because I have to tell you, like, I'm not easy.
- 1:05Speaker 5: I know that that's okay, okay, And.
- 1:08Speaker 4: I'm older than you. I'm a senior too, I'm fifty
- 1:10Speaker 4: five years old. So I have lost all patients for
- 1:15Speaker 4: humanity and everything they stand for.
- 1:17Speaker 1: What do you why do you say you're so you're
- 1:20Speaker 1: not easy? Why do you say that? Well, historically, Sai,
- 1:25Speaker 1: I said, I know, because I know that's what you
- 1:27Speaker 1: think of yourself, and you've said that. I watched your
- 1:30Speaker 1: documentary and you did watch my documentary, Yeah, Saving Jones.
- 1:34Speaker 5: Yeah it was really it was.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Yes, Yes, there were parts of it that I had to,
- 1:37Speaker 1: you know, look away because I can't very sensitive with
- 1:40Speaker 1: animals as you are, as well as many of us are.
- 1:42Speaker 1: But yes, of course, yes, I wanted to prepare and
- 1:45Speaker 1: and understand what you've been up to during this whole
- 1:47Speaker 1: time because I knew you years ago doing stand up.
- 1:51Speaker 5: We should stand up together. Twenty twenty five years ago.
- 1:54Speaker 4: I moved here in ninety nine. I actually, I think
- 1:58Speaker 4: the first time I ever did stand up was and
- 2:00Speaker 4: I auditioned for the New Faces for the Montreal Comedy Festival,
- 2:04Speaker 4: and I actually went me and Kevin Hart were in
- 2:06Speaker 4: there were in new faces together.
- 2:08Speaker 5: Were you were you taller than him? Then?
- 2:11Speaker 4: At that he is approximately about a quarter inch taller. Oh,
- 2:14Speaker 4: but if I had to take him, you know you could,
- 2:17Speaker 4: I could.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he could easily be taken by a woman.
- 2:20Speaker 1: And nobody can dispute that.
- 2:22Speaker 5: I'm sure.
- 2:22Speaker 4: So then after that two thousand and one, I did
- 2:26Speaker 4: stand up and then yes, you and I did several
- 2:28Speaker 4: shows together at the improv. Yeah. Yeah. But then and
- 2:33Speaker 4: and you know, then, you know, I did the stuff
- 2:36Speaker 4: I did the career, did the did the stuff. And
- 2:39Speaker 4: then then a you know, dog came into my life.
- 2:42Speaker 3: And and Angel was the dog that sort of like
- 2:44Speaker 3: changed the trajectory.
- 2:45Speaker 4: And right, is that the dog on the shirt?
- 2:47Speaker 5: Yes, tell us a little bit about that.
- 2:51Speaker 4: She came into my life. And then I started learning
- 2:52Speaker 4: about how they're so discriminated against and how everyone fears
- 2:55Speaker 4: them people, yes, piple tip dogs, and and I just
- 2:59Speaker 4: could not belie leave that people were so horrified by
- 3:04Speaker 4: them and so willing to hate them and want them
- 3:08Speaker 4: all dead and to victimize them. And they're the most
- 3:10Speaker 4: abused and tortured dogs on the planet, and like, you know,
- 3:14Speaker 4: eighty five percent of them are like, you know, make
- 3:16Speaker 4: up what's in shelters, and so I just couldn't believe it.
- 3:21Speaker 4: You know, I'd be walking down the street, people be
- 3:22Speaker 4: bolting to the other side and like, you know, saying,
- 3:25Speaker 4: I hope that dog kills you, like crazy stuff, where
- 3:27Speaker 4: I was like, this is crazy, what it's happening? Yeah,
- 3:30Speaker 4: And she was just nothing but love, you know. She
- 3:33Speaker 4: was just born inherently good and changed everything. And then
- 3:36Speaker 4: I when I realized like how voiceless they were and
- 3:39Speaker 4: how victimized they were and how mistreated they were, I
- 3:43Speaker 4: just was like it was just knowledge. Once I had,
- 3:46Speaker 4: I was like I can never I cannot just move along.
- 3:52Speaker 4: I have to do something. And so then I, you know,
- 3:54Speaker 4: I started doing live events before I became a charity.
- 3:56Speaker 4: I never wanted to become a charity, and you know,
- 3:59Speaker 4: just in biting my stand up comedy friends to perform,
- 4:02Speaker 4: and it became bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger
- 4:04Speaker 4: and bigger. And then I organized a march on Washington
- 4:07Speaker 4: and that was amazing and just it really just solidified
- 4:12Speaker 4: that that's what I need to be doing. So after
- 4:13Speaker 4: about six years, I just chose, like, you know, is
- 4:17Speaker 4: this something that I really want to do for my life?
- 4:20Speaker 5: Or would just run a charity.
- 4:23Speaker 4: And do this my job? This is my job?
- 4:25Speaker 5: Wow?
- 4:26Speaker 4: Or do I want to you know, and earn in
- 4:29Speaker 4: a year what sometimes it would take me a week
- 4:32Speaker 4: to earn? Choose that life? Do I want to choose
- 4:35Speaker 4: that life? Or what do I want to do? And
- 4:38Speaker 4: that's what I chose?
- 4:39Speaker 5: Wow?
- 4:40Speaker 4: Yeah, it sucks.
- 4:42Speaker 1: So when you say you're a lot, why do you
- 4:44Speaker 1: say that? When you say you're not easy? Why do
- 4:47Speaker 1: you say that? I say that when I'm dating in person,
- 4:50Speaker 1: I'm like, listen, I'm a lot.
- 4:51Speaker 5: So you might not be able to handle this.
- 4:53Speaker 4: I could see that, Yeah, I'm a lot because I
- 4:57Speaker 4: really really really really really don't give a fuck, and
- 5:00Speaker 4: I really really will say and do what I feel,
- 5:04Speaker 4: even if I know that there is severe professional or
- 5:07Speaker 4: personal consequences.
- 5:09Speaker 5: I will.
- 5:10Speaker 4: And So when you and I were having our banter online,
- 5:14Speaker 4: the reason that I said that to you was because
- 5:17Speaker 4: I had posted a comment on your page. My comment
- 5:20Speaker 4: was restricted on your page, and I was like, unrestrict
- 5:24Speaker 4: the comment.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I want people to see the comment restricted. I wouldn't
- 5:27Speaker 1: even know how to restrict something.
- 5:28Speaker 4: That someone must have, and it wasn't rude. I don't
- 5:31Speaker 4: even think I said.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, right, because that's weird and it wouldn't be
- 5:35Speaker 1: like I have so many negative comments on my.
- 5:40Speaker 4: That's why I was so frustrated. Was like, that's not
- 5:42Speaker 4: like her to do that. So anyways, that's how our
- 5:45Speaker 4: banter started. But then it was later where I was like,
- 5:49Speaker 4: I posted the Luis y k right right, right right
- 5:53Speaker 4: the thing, and that enrages me. That enrages me to
- 5:56Speaker 4: this day because there's so much about that that is
- 6:01Speaker 4: so insane that people don't know, not even a clue,
- 6:05Speaker 4: Like they don't even have a clue. So what angers
- 6:08Speaker 4: me about it is that it's just like this narrative
- 6:11Speaker 4: that there was this power being wielded over me. I'm
- 6:13Speaker 4: not speaking for the other women. I'm speaking for me.
- 6:15Speaker 4: There was this power, you know, this power that was
- 6:18Speaker 4: wielded and that we succumb to it because of the power.
- 6:21Speaker 4: It's not the case, and in my case, I'm speaking
- 6:24Speaker 4: for me, that was not the case. I was a
- 6:26Speaker 4: creator and a writer and a series regular on a
- 6:29Speaker 4: television show that I sold with Courtney Cox a David Arquette,
- 6:32Speaker 4: and he was a cast member that was hired for
- 6:35Speaker 4: that day to shoot the pilot Luis c. K correct,
- 6:38Speaker 4: But it was not. It was there was.
- 6:40Speaker 5: No power dynamic from his.
- 6:42Speaker 4: The only from his stamp from no, the only power
- 6:45Speaker 4: dynamic would be I was his boss, essentially right. And
- 6:48Speaker 4: every time the guy farts in a certain direction, like
- 6:51Speaker 4: I am drug through hell like I am, just like constantly,
- 6:57Speaker 4: it's drudged back up. You're an unfunny you know, cunt, midget,
- 7:02Speaker 4: hack loser, you got paid? What'd you you need? Attention? Like,
- 7:06Speaker 4: all of this stuff comes up and I'm drug through
- 7:09Speaker 4: it over and over and it's just endless publicity about
- 7:12Speaker 4: what he's doing. And he's entitled to do whatever the
- 7:14Speaker 4: fuck he wants. He is, he can go do whatever
- 7:18Speaker 4: he wants, and that's fine. It does not affect my
- 7:21Speaker 4: life in any way, shape or form.
- 7:23Speaker 1: So what bothers you about that narrative that makes it
- 7:27Speaker 1: so much that it was a hielding power or wielding
- 7:31Speaker 1: power for me?
- 7:33Speaker 4: And again I say that because I don't ever want
- 7:35Speaker 4: to speak on behalf of any of the other women
- 7:38Speaker 4: I was, you know, I was. I sold a television
- 7:42Speaker 4: show that was legitimate that he was hired to be
- 7:45Speaker 4: on for a day, and he chose to do the
- 7:47Speaker 4: behavior that he did, and I chose to not shut
- 7:50Speaker 4: down production. I chose to keep going because everyone else
- 7:53Speaker 4: was there working doing their job, and you know how
- 7:56Speaker 4: hearted is to sell a show. I just chose to not
- 8:00Speaker 4: do that. That was my choice. I was given the choice
- 8:02Speaker 4: what I wanted to do in that moment, and I
- 8:04Speaker 4: chose not to do it. I stand by that choice.
- 8:07Speaker 4: But I just can't stand the narrative that it's just
- 8:11Speaker 4: like I was this victim. It's just that when it's
- 8:14Speaker 4: constantly said over and over and over in all of
- 8:18Speaker 4: the press and on all of these huge podcasts with
- 8:21Speaker 4: you know, all of his homies and stuff, and they're
- 8:23Speaker 4: all just perpetuating this narrative that it's like, you know,
- 8:25Speaker 4: it's just you know, it was just this thing and
- 8:28Speaker 4: like no big deal, NBD, and like these bitches just
- 8:32Speaker 4: you know, are climbers and they were weak and they
- 8:34Speaker 4: just wanted something. It's like, that's not the case. That
- 8:38Speaker 4: for me, that is not the case. I was just
- 8:40Speaker 4: doing I was working on a television show, doing my job,
- 8:43Speaker 4: and what happened. I was walking to set, I was
- 8:47Speaker 4: I was miked, and I was walking to set to
- 8:49Speaker 4: shoot my scene, and he walked up to me and
- 8:52Speaker 4: asked if he could jerk off in front of me
- 8:53Speaker 4: and in my dressing room, and I said, in the moment,
- 8:57Speaker 4: I said, abs a fucking lutely, not your face out
- 9:00Speaker 4: of my face. That's super fucked up. No, that's all
- 9:04Speaker 4: it was. And and then production found out and shut
- 9:10Speaker 4: it down, and we added a lot of long talk
- 9:11Speaker 4: about it, and then they gave me the choice, like,
- 9:14Speaker 4: you know, do you what do you want to do
- 9:15Speaker 4: in this moment?
- 9:17Speaker 1: You know, did you know him at all before that? No,
- 9:21Speaker 1: like through comedy stand up.
- 9:23Speaker 4: I'm I'm very close with Dan and Julia, the other
- 9:26Speaker 4: two women who had a different experience with him up
- 9:29Speaker 4: in Aspen. They're they're they're in my documentary. You probably
- 9:35Speaker 4: saw them. I wrote a piece about it during the
- 9:38Speaker 4: whole thing that you know, it just puts you in
- 9:40Speaker 4: a lose lose situation when someone does that to you,
- 9:43Speaker 4: you are immediately involved in that realm and you can
- 9:47Speaker 4: never get out, right, You are sucked into the vortex
- 9:49Speaker 4: of that bullshit and you will never get out through
- 9:52Speaker 4: no choice of your own. There is a hundred percent.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And also every guy like that will be like.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Well, yes, mission, that's what they'll that's what they'll.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Say, you know, hearing this or having heard and with me,
- 10:07Speaker 1: he did, but I am not.
- 10:09Speaker 4: The other women and other people have a lot of
- 10:11Speaker 4: other stories and I but for me, he did, And
- 10:16Speaker 4: in that moment, I was like, absolutely fucking not. It's disgusting.
- 10:21Speaker 4: What the fuck imagine walking to say? It's just I
- 10:26Speaker 4: and you know what, it's it's gone. You know, it
- 10:29Speaker 4: was a long long time ago. And the reasons that
- 10:32Speaker 4: I spoke were for a lot of reasons. People don't understand.
- 10:36Speaker 4: They would never even comprehend why I did. I spoke
- 10:39Speaker 4: when I spoke, but I did. I have my reasons,
- 10:42Speaker 4: they're justified. I wouldn't change it.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Do you want to talk about that? What your reasons are?
- 10:47Speaker 1: Do you feel like you've already said that I never
- 10:49Speaker 1: have said it. Do you want to say it? What
- 10:55Speaker 1: are your reasons first speaking up?
- 10:57Speaker 5: When you did?
- 10:58Speaker 4: I was invited to the Jane Goodall premiere to see
- 11:01Speaker 4: her documentary, which I love Jane Goodall and I've had
- 11:05Speaker 4: the privilege of meeting her a few times, which is like, right,
- 11:09Speaker 4: you know what I mean, it's a good one. I
- 11:11Speaker 4: was at her premiere and was doing the carpet and
- 11:13Speaker 4: stuff like that. And at the time, there was another
- 11:18Speaker 4: comedian who was being very outspoken about about Louis and
- 11:22Speaker 4: his behaviors and stuff like that, and that person is
- 11:26Speaker 4: a friend of mine and she was being very vocal
- 11:29Speaker 4: about or whatever. But I just I, for you know,
- 11:32Speaker 4: was doing what I had done for years, which is
- 11:34Speaker 4: just ignore it, just move on and just keep it moving,
- 11:38Speaker 4: like keep it moving. I did not have the experience
- 11:40Speaker 4: as other people had, so for me, just wanted to
- 11:43Speaker 4: keep it moving, right. So I went to this premiere
- 11:46Speaker 4: and a person that is of you know, that is
- 11:49Speaker 4: very close with him, was really really nasty to me,
- 11:53Speaker 4: like humiliatingly nasty. And I thought, so, what was that
- 11:58Speaker 4: all about? And why is that necessary? And it was
- 12:00Speaker 4: in front of a bunch of people, a bunch of
- 12:02Speaker 4: mutual people and stuff like that. It was very blatant,
- 12:05Speaker 4: very obvious and really nasty. And I thought, well, I'm
- 12:11Speaker 4: losing no matter what, whether I'm quiet or not, I'm losing.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Like I'm fucked. I'm clearly on the radar, I'm clearly
- 12:21Speaker 4: on some sort of list. So I'm here just trying
- 12:25Speaker 4: to see, you know, meet Jane Goodall and see her documentary,
- 12:29Speaker 4: support her work, and I'm being treated like shit by
- 12:33Speaker 4: a complete asshole. So I went home that night and
- 12:39Speaker 4: like I cried. I'm not a big crier. It takes
- 12:41Speaker 4: a lot to get me to do that, but I
- 12:44Speaker 4: cried and was like this is so fucked up, and
- 12:46Speaker 4: like I'm just trying to like move on. I don't
- 12:50Speaker 4: deserve that shit. I've not done anything, I've not said anything.
- 12:53Speaker 4: It wasn't my fault, like just like fucking leave me
- 12:56Speaker 4: alone kind of thing. And so I told my friend
- 13:00Speaker 4: friend who was being very vocal about everything, and I was,
- 13:04Speaker 4: and I said, I'll go on record and I'll use
- 13:06Speaker 4: my name, and she and I at that time, I
- 13:09Speaker 4: was the only one. And she was like, you're going
- 13:12Speaker 4: to use your name and I said yeah, because it
- 13:15Speaker 4: doesn't matter. Doesn't fucking matter. I'm losing anyway, Like, don't
- 13:19Speaker 4: say anything. I'm a piece of shit. Say something, I'm
- 13:21Speaker 4: a piece of shit. It doesn't matter. So at the
- 13:24Speaker 4: time I spoke to New York Times and and they
- 13:28Speaker 4: were like, Okay, you're the only one. I was like,
- 13:32Speaker 4: that's fine, and they I don't know what I'm allowed
- 13:36Speaker 4: to say or not allowed to say, But I was
- 13:38Speaker 4: the only one, and then as some time went on,
- 13:41Speaker 4: then there was four other women. And that's it. I
- 13:45Speaker 4: told my told my bit, told my told the truth,
- 13:49Speaker 4: told the story Courtney David corroborated and others, and I
- 13:55Speaker 4: stand by it. Like I said, I don't regret it,
- 13:57Speaker 4: but it doesn't go away. And you know, it's the
- 14:01Speaker 4: consequences of of that. And just when you and I
- 14:06Speaker 4: going back to our post on communicating on Instagram, it's
- 14:09Speaker 4: like it's just hearing a false narrative repeatedly for almost
- 14:13Speaker 4: a decade. It's just fucking infuriating. And so when you
- 14:17Speaker 4: were like, well, you know, how can I support you?
- 14:19Speaker 4: Because literally, ultimately there was no support, zero support from
- 14:25Speaker 4: the comedy community, zero support from women. I lost friends
- 14:30Speaker 4: because of it. I you know, people distanced themselves. They're like,
- 14:34Speaker 4: I don't want to be around you. You you called
- 14:36Speaker 4: out one of the most powerful people in comedy, or
- 14:38Speaker 4: you know you're done, you know you're out, You're done.
- 14:42Speaker 4: I'm sorry, and I'm gonna say something that might shock you.
- 14:46Speaker 4: But the most support I got, when any support came,
- 14:51Speaker 4: was from men. It was you know, John Mulaney, it
- 14:55Speaker 4: was Pete Lee, it was Judah Friedlander, it was Mark Marin,
- 15:02Speaker 4: Patton Oswald. People reached out and were cool guys. Women
- 15:08Speaker 4: not so much. It was very much there was fake,
- 15:12Speaker 4: fake women who were like Rob Rossis Kumbala and we
- 15:14Speaker 4: put on my pink pussy hat and stand with you
- 15:16Speaker 4: in the moment. But it wasn't It wasn't real. It
- 15:20Speaker 4: wasn't real at all. And the next moment they got
- 15:23Speaker 4: to be in the boys club, they went right right
- 15:26Speaker 4: to it. They kissed the ring and do whatever they
- 15:28Speaker 4: can't just And here's the thing too, I understand that
- 15:32Speaker 4: it put everyone in a really bad situation. I understand that,
- 15:36Speaker 4: so I kind of have grace for some people. But
- 15:41Speaker 4: you asked me, you know, when I sat down, what
- 15:43Speaker 4: is it that bothers you the most? It is the
- 15:45Speaker 4: false narrative that I You know that we're all, all
- 15:49Speaker 4: of the women who went on record, we all have separate,
- 15:52Speaker 4: different stories. We are all different individual human beings. I
- 15:55Speaker 4: don't know the other two women. I very much know
- 15:58Speaker 4: Dan and Julia. They're very special to me. They're good
- 16:01Speaker 4: friends to me. I don't know the other women. But
- 16:05Speaker 4: you know, we we had our experiences. We handled it
- 16:09Speaker 4: in the way that we handled it, but we shouldn't
- 16:11Speaker 4: be lumped into one group like booo, the little you know,
- 16:17Speaker 4: that's the part that enrages me. And it's just not
- 16:20Speaker 4: anything I'm ever going to be able to get away from.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Aside from that, everything's good and everything's good. So that's
- 16:30Speaker 4: how we got to answer your question. That's how we
- 16:32Speaker 4: started talking. And then Chelsea was like pulled up her
- 16:35Speaker 4: big girl pants and said, what do you want me
- 16:37Speaker 4: to do to support you? And I go have me
- 16:40Speaker 4: on your podcast and she said, great, my people will
- 16:43Speaker 4: reach out to you. And I just thought they will not.
- 16:46Speaker 4: They will not, and they did, and you did look
- 16:49Speaker 4: at us, like, look at us. We're gonna get low
- 16:50Speaker 4: backed tats after this.
- 16:53Speaker 5: Did you bring one over?
- 16:55Speaker 3: No?
- 16:55Speaker 1: I can't actually do tattoos a tattoo artist.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Oh my god, you should see the one I have.
- 17:00Speaker 5: I was back. Did you cover it up?
- 17:01Speaker 4: Seriously?
- 17:02Speaker 5: Could you?
- 17:03Speaker 4: We'll talk about that lak yeah, but no. So thank you, Chelsea.
- 17:06Speaker 5: I'm proud of.
- 17:07Speaker 1: You, Like, oh well, I mean, I'm glad to hear
- 17:11Speaker 1: this all, even though it's unpleasant. I know it's unpleasant,
- 17:15Speaker 1: but I'm glad for you to be able to talk
- 17:18Speaker 1: about it in this way and to create I what
- 17:23Speaker 1: you know, hopefully some distance from this and him and
- 17:26Speaker 1: not narrative.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Well, it's a bit concerning talking about it to you,
- 17:31Speaker 4: because this will get you have a gazillion people who
- 17:34Speaker 4: pay attention to what you say and do, and this
- 17:38Speaker 4: will air and it will start all over. And I
- 17:41Speaker 4: had to shut my Twitter account down. I was getting
- 17:43Speaker 4: death threats for two years, people showing up at my
- 17:45Speaker 4: charity events telling me that they were going to rape
- 17:47Speaker 4: me to death, like crazy shit. Yeah, so it's a
- 17:50Speaker 4: double edged sword. I can talk to you about it.
- 17:52Speaker 4: I am talking to you about it. I'm giving you
- 17:53Speaker 4: consent to talk about it. I don't really talk about
- 17:56Speaker 4: it that often, but it's what brought us together, so
- 17:59Speaker 4: I feel like it's worth talking about. But at the
- 18:02Speaker 4: same time, I'm fully aware of what this is going
- 18:04Speaker 4: to do, and it is not going to be cute.
- 18:06Speaker 4: But everyone can fucking suck it.
- 18:10Speaker 5: I don't care.
- 18:11Speaker 1: I kind of feel that way about the world in general,
- 18:15Speaker 1: you know, right now, I think a lot of women
- 18:19Speaker 1: have come to this conclusion.
- 18:24Speaker 5: The collusion that gives a fuck, you know what I mean.
- 18:26Speaker 4: I mean, I don't have.
- 18:27Speaker 1: To for everyone, and everyone's the tenor the way that
- 18:34Speaker 1: men are allowed to talk and treat women in this
- 18:37Speaker 1: country has gotten to such a place that I really
- 18:39Speaker 1: don't care about like pleasing them or making them happy.
- 18:45Speaker 1: It's about making men aware, and we're not going to
- 18:48Speaker 1: do it on this podcast. There's not tons of straight
- 18:50Speaker 1: guys watching me, you know, either they I represent you
- 18:54Speaker 1: know what a lot of those guys from the manosphere hate,
- 18:57Speaker 1: which is an independent woman, woman who doesn't isn't looking
- 18:59Speaker 1: for a man or doesn't need a man, and they
- 19:01Speaker 1: don't like that.
- 19:02Speaker 5: But I think a lot of women, I know a
- 19:06Speaker 5: lot of women are just sick of it.
- 19:07Speaker 1: We've all had it. It's just exhausting. And every time
- 19:10Speaker 1: you meet a nice guy, you're like, oh my god,
- 19:12Speaker 1: what a pleasure, and you're like over yeah, it's like
- 19:16Speaker 1: a good dad. You're like, oh my god, you're such
- 19:18Speaker 1: a good dad because you're with your kid right right,
- 19:21Speaker 1: And you're like, oh my god, these guys you're getting
- 19:23Speaker 1: rewarded just for being not rapist or not disgusting.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Yeah, Like one of the easiest things in the world
- 19:29Speaker 4: to not do is jerk off at someone someone, But
- 19:31Speaker 4: it seems like one of them in a workplace. But
- 19:34Speaker 4: it just seems like, that's just such a task. And
- 19:37Speaker 4: I guess if one good thing has come out of
- 19:39Speaker 4: the past ten years of that experience, this is good
- 19:43Speaker 4: because I appreciate it, and I appreciate you taking the
- 19:45Speaker 4: time to do it, and also you know, taking the
- 19:49Speaker 4: time to watch my documentary and having a little bit
- 19:52Speaker 4: of an understanding about what I'm up against when it
- 19:54Speaker 4: comes to the city and like trying to end this.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Horrible crisis because you have a lawsuit against this Los Angeles.
- 20:00Speaker 4: Right, I have a lawsuit against everybody, all of the excellence. Yeah,
- 20:05Speaker 4: all of them.
- 20:08Speaker 3: And tell me what is the like goal, purpose and
- 20:11Speaker 3: goal of Like if you could wave a magic want
- 20:13Speaker 3: to get your wish, what.
- 20:14Speaker 5: Is the results?
- 20:15Speaker 4: Okay, that's a great question. Thank you, Thank you, Catherine.
- 20:20Speaker 4: My dream would be like I started my charity sixteen
- 20:24Speaker 4: years ago, and I loved it because I was still
- 20:27Speaker 4: doing stand up when I was touring with my charity
- 20:29Speaker 4: and got to do all that still, but also but
- 20:32Speaker 4: doing it in a positive way was saving all these
- 20:34Speaker 4: dogs and everything. But in my brain, I was like, oh,
- 20:36Speaker 4: this is not going to last long. I got this charity,
- 20:38Speaker 4: You'll be around for like a few years and then
- 20:40Speaker 4: I'll have to shut it down because there's no need
- 20:41Speaker 4: for it. And then I can go back to, you know,
- 20:44Speaker 4: if I'm hirable, you know, going back to trying to
- 20:48Speaker 4: have my career that I worked on, you know that
- 20:50Speaker 4: I wanted and had, and it just turns out there's
- 20:54Speaker 4: no end in sight, and not even in my lifetime
- 20:57Speaker 4: will there be. But I'm a national charity but based
- 21:00Speaker 4: in Los Angeles. But my dream is that is that
- 21:04Speaker 4: animals in Los Angeles will stop being killed in no
- 21:07Speaker 4: kill shelters. They call the shelters no kill when they're
- 21:10Speaker 4: killing dogs every single day. Best Friends Animal Society calls
- 21:14Speaker 4: it no kill LA. It's their thing, and I don't
- 21:17Speaker 4: agree with it, because how can you call something How
- 21:21Speaker 4: can you call something no kill when killing is happening
- 21:23Speaker 4: every day. These are adoptable, lovable dogs. It's just batshit
- 21:28Speaker 4: And so I'm firmly against that, and I'm also firmly
- 21:31Speaker 4: against animals being I'm sorry, this is a real nose
- 21:34Speaker 4: dive into the dark, but just go. We'll go with there,
- 21:37Speaker 4: for I'll get us back out. I'll take us out.
- 21:40Speaker 4: When dogs are being starved, infected, crammed in wire crates
- 21:43Speaker 4: they're given to them by La City Shelters and called support.
- 21:47Speaker 4: It's insane, and it's all happening in plain sight, like
- 21:50Speaker 4: none of it is secret. This is all real life,
- 21:53Speaker 4: like no one's making it up. It's not a theory.
- 21:56Speaker 4: This is real life. So when I first found out
- 21:59Speaker 4: about this about three years yars ago, I'd lived here
- 22:01Speaker 4: for a very long time, and I'm ashamed to say
- 22:02Speaker 4: I didn't really know what was going on on skid
- 22:04Speaker 4: Row and all over the city. I didn't know, and
- 22:08Speaker 4: a lot of times it's easy to not know. So
- 22:10Speaker 4: when I found out about it, it was sort of
- 22:12Speaker 4: the Angel thing where I was like, holy shit, this
- 22:14Speaker 4: is insanity. This is and I'm a national organization, so
- 22:17Speaker 4: I know what's going on around the country, but I
- 22:19Speaker 4: was like, holy crap, this is like the fourth largest economy,
- 22:21Speaker 4: that one of the largest cities in the world. This
- 22:23Speaker 4: is a place of privilege and power, and animals are
- 22:26Speaker 4: enduring things that you cannot you cannot fathom, you cannot fathom,
- 22:34Speaker 4: and so I thought, Nope, that's gonna be wrapped up.
- 22:41Speaker 4: We're gonna wrap that up. So I started offering services
- 22:44Speaker 4: and resources and funding to span neuter piple type dogs
- 22:47Speaker 4: on skid row and brought people in from blood Sport
- 22:50Speaker 4: and all because they're fighting dogs and stuff from HSUS
- 22:53Speaker 4: that they're now Humane World for Animals, and they had
- 22:55Speaker 4: offered to do a sweep of the streets and pull
- 22:58Speaker 4: the dogs who were being abused. Because not all just
- 23:01Speaker 4: everyone knows, not all unhoused people abuse animals. There's many
- 23:06Speaker 4: unhoused people who love their animals and give them what
- 23:09Speaker 4: they need, just like not all people with houses abuse animals,
- 23:14Speaker 4: but also people with houses abuse animals. So let's just
- 23:17Speaker 4: clear that up so that the comments aren't you're going
- 23:19Speaker 4: after home and we're not going after unhoused people. We
- 23:22Speaker 4: are going after animal abusers, and they're doing it in
- 23:26Speaker 4: plain sight. There's no excuse for it. So when I
- 23:28Speaker 4: found that out, I just thought, no, no, I cannot
- 23:31Speaker 4: live in this city. I cannot do what I do.
- 23:34Speaker 4: I cannot have the mission maturity has and know that
- 23:38Speaker 4: that's happening seven miles from my apartment. It's not happening.
- 23:43Speaker 4: So I started doing I wasn't just crying and yelling
- 23:46Speaker 4: and posting, and I was offering solutions, bringing in outside resources,
- 23:50Speaker 4: and they were all just like, suck it sideways, lady.
- 23:54Speaker 4: We don't want to hear what you have to say.
- 23:55Speaker 4: We're not doing anything. And that has been consistent from
- 23:58Speaker 4: Karen Bass to City Council Nitya, to all of La
- 24:02Speaker 4: Animal Services, to Stacy Danes, Brenda Barnett, all of the GMS,
- 24:08Speaker 4: all of it. They have just literally been like, no,
- 24:13Speaker 4: we don't care what you have to say, and we're
- 24:15Speaker 4: not solving it and we're not taking care of it.
- 24:18Speaker 4: So after I exhausted everything for three years, I've been
- 24:21Speaker 4: on every news show, done every interview, done everything I
- 24:25Speaker 4: could possibly do to try to help end this, I
- 24:28Speaker 4: decided that I would sue them all. And so I am.
- 24:33Speaker 4: And it's a historical, unprecedented lawsuit, and I have a
- 24:37Speaker 4: really good legal team, Mark Garrigos and his firm, our attorneys,
- 24:42Speaker 4: and we're fighting. We're still fighting and so on. The
- 24:46Speaker 4: goal is to get it through to court so then
- 24:48Speaker 4: we can get depositions and we can interview them and
- 24:51Speaker 4: they have to be held accountable for what they're allowing
- 24:53Speaker 4: to happen. And the dogs and the shelters are enduring
- 24:56Speaker 4: excruciating circumstances. Some dogs are not even getting out of
- 24:59Speaker 4: their kennels for six months, you know, what I mean,
- 25:02Speaker 4: So I want this is all fixable stuff. I do
- 25:05Speaker 4: believe that it can be fixed.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Is there a place or a city that you know
- 25:13Speaker 1: of where their system is a good beta test for
- 25:17Speaker 1: ours or like blueprint not.
- 25:20Speaker 4: That's a great question. But not in America. Other countries. Yeah,
- 25:23Speaker 4: there's always going to be psychos who abused animals and
- 25:26Speaker 4: do shitty things, but for the most part, they have
- 25:29Speaker 4: great responses and great outcomes, and they control their population
- 25:33Speaker 4: and they you know, it's a very A lot of
- 25:36Speaker 4: other countries have things great under control, and I know
- 25:40Speaker 4: we can do the same thing. In America not so much.
- 25:43Speaker 4: Right now, we're in a total state of emergency. Like honestly,
- 25:47Speaker 4: and especially LA, we are in a severe crisis.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Let's tell people how they can help, what they can do.
- 25:53Speaker 1: And we've got tons of animal lovers that listen to
- 25:56Speaker 1: this show, So what can people do to contribute? Where
- 25:59Speaker 1: can people see your documentary and yeah, people want to
- 26:03Speaker 1: help dogs. Let's figure out what we can do, Okay.
- 26:06Speaker 3: And also put a link to your documentary in the
- 26:09Speaker 3: description for this episode too.
- 26:11Speaker 4: I have a documentary short and the feature length. Those
- 26:13Speaker 4: are both available at standard for Pitts dot US and
- 26:17Speaker 4: there's a link there to go to kinema dot com.
- 26:19Speaker 4: It's where you can rent it for now. That's where
- 26:21Speaker 4: it's available. And then how people can help is if
- 26:25Speaker 4: you are able to foster a dog, just open your home,
- 26:28Speaker 4: you know, become a foster for a reputable rescue and
- 26:35Speaker 4: open your home to try to adopt if you want
- 26:37Speaker 4: to help the situation, the crisis. Volunteers are always needed,
- 26:41Speaker 4: shelter volunteers, and they're always desperately hurting, especially Lancaster, Palmdale,
- 26:47Speaker 4: not so much Palmdale, Lancaster that's a county shelter, not
- 26:50Speaker 4: a city shelter, but all the shelters, city and county
- 26:52Speaker 4: shelters desperately need volunteers. Donate if you can, but people don't.
- 26:56Speaker 4: A lot of people don't have money. That's okay. You
- 26:58Speaker 4: can still help and be effective and make an impact
- 27:00Speaker 4: without having to donate. I always you know, I'm better
- 27:04Speaker 4: at asking for money as a charity, but I always am.
- 27:07Speaker 4: I think what's more powerful is empowering people to do something.
- 27:11Speaker 4: If I, as a dipshit comedian who's never had anything
- 27:15Speaker 4: to do with animal welfare, can accomplish what my charity
- 27:19Speaker 4: has been able to accomplish. Anyone can do it. You
- 27:21Speaker 4: just have to want to do it. So find what
- 27:25Speaker 4: pulls at your heart, whether it's volunteering, fostering, donating, dropping
- 27:29Speaker 4: off supplies to shelters, going down to skid row to
- 27:33Speaker 4: feed the dogs and give the dogs water when it's hot,
- 27:36Speaker 4: bring people it's dangerous, be careful. Whatever you can do
- 27:41Speaker 4: to help, even just one act to help one dog matters.
- 27:46Speaker 4: So that's what I would say. There's no real real form,
- 27:50Speaker 4: there's no real answer. It's just find out what is
- 27:53Speaker 4: important to you, what you want to see change, and
- 27:56Speaker 4: try to be a part of that change in whatever
- 27:57Speaker 4: way you can. It's really that simple.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Well, I like that you're channeling your anger and rage
- 28:03Speaker 1: in this way.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Thank you. This is important what you're doing.
- 28:07Speaker 4: Thank you. Yeah, it's a lot of rage. I have
- 28:09Speaker 4: an enormous amount of rage.
- 28:11Speaker 5: There's a lot of rage to be had, I understand.
- 28:14Speaker 4: Yeah, but thank you. Yeah. There's nothing more powerful than
- 28:16Speaker 4: a pissed off woman.
- 28:18Speaker 5: We get a lot done. Yeah.
- 28:19Speaker 4: And my dream, just to answer your question fully, is
- 28:23Speaker 4: that it just stops. I want to shut my charity down.
- 28:27Speaker 4: I don't like this. I I honestly would love to
- 28:30Speaker 4: work at Trader Joe's and live in upstate New York.
- 28:34Speaker 4: That's my dream. That's where I'm at. I'm probably gonna
- 28:38Speaker 4: die at sixty. I'm really hopeful. There's no wood. I'm
- 28:41Speaker 4: hoping that I do.
- 28:41Speaker 5: There's wood right behind you.
- 28:43Speaker 4: I just I have small arms, Chelsea. I can't reach shit. Yeah,
- 28:46Speaker 4: thank you.
- 28:47Speaker 5: I couldn't even knock on the wood.
- 28:48Speaker 4: No, it's fine, it's fine.
- 28:50Speaker 5: I wouldn't mind doing a group euthanasia.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Do you?
- 28:53Speaker 5: Does that sound like something? Of course, they euthanize dogs.
- 28:58Speaker 5: Why can't they euthanize us.
- 29:01Speaker 1: It's kind of a conflict, actually, because we're talking about
- 29:04Speaker 1: not euthanizing dogs, and then we want to but we
- 29:07Speaker 1: get you because I'm kind of I feel like I
- 29:10Speaker 1: want to.
- 29:10Speaker 5: Wrap things up soon, to.
- 29:12Speaker 4: Wrap it up. Okay, Well, when you're ready, let me
- 29:14Speaker 4: know and I'll go wherever you go.
- 29:16Speaker 1: You might, I might be wrapping it up whatever you
- 29:20Speaker 1: want to happen.
- 29:20Speaker 5: I see it happening for you. You do, because yes.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Because you are fueled by anger and rage and you're
- 29:25Speaker 1: going to accomplish something with this, even more than you
- 29:29Speaker 1: already have, like whether it's this lawsuit or you know,
- 29:32Speaker 1: however that happens.
- 29:34Speaker 5: I do see.
- 29:35Speaker 1: You can't put this much effort into something and not
- 29:38Speaker 1: see a result.
- 29:39Speaker 5: You just can't. It will happen. It just doesn't happen
- 29:42Speaker 5: whenever you want it to happen.
- 29:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I really hope you're right.
- 29:46Speaker 1: And I think we should get you back on stage two.
- 29:48Speaker 1: It is doing sets, don't you think.
- 29:50Speaker 5: I like the load a little bit once once a week.
- 29:54Speaker 4: So I love doing stand up so much, and I
- 29:58Speaker 4: feel like I have about nine in me. I have
- 30:01Speaker 4: an enormous amount of things to say and talk about.
- 30:04Speaker 4: And but also I feel like, you know, no one cares,
- 30:10Speaker 4: but who cares?
- 30:11Speaker 5: Who cares?
- 30:11Speaker 1: I just think it might give you a little slice
- 30:14Speaker 1: of sunshine.
- 30:15Speaker 4: It would, you know? I mean it would, it would.
- 30:17Speaker 4: It's definitely something that I miss and I love doing it.
- 30:21Speaker 5: But I did two sets last night.
- 30:23Speaker 1: I did the improv and then I did the Comedy Store,
- 30:25Speaker 1: and I just feels did you love it?
- 30:27Speaker 5: I did?
- 30:28Speaker 1: I feel it's it's not easy for me when I'm
- 30:30Speaker 1: here in La to like want to go out at night,
- 30:33Speaker 1: because I like, I use LA as like a recovery place.
- 30:35Speaker 4: And look at your home and that dog.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Would you ever I know the dog is hard to leave,
- 30:39Speaker 1: really hard to leave. But anyway, I did go, and
- 30:42Speaker 1: it just is a moodlifter to go out and make
- 30:45Speaker 1: people laugh. So any yeah, we're gonna let's we'll focus
- 30:50Speaker 1: on getting you some spots around town. Whenever you want
- 30:53Speaker 1: to do it. We'll keep in touch and then yeah,
- 30:56Speaker 1: we'll figure it out, get a.
- 30:57Speaker 4: Set together, Okay, then we get it up to talk
- 31:01Speaker 4: about everything.
- 31:02Speaker 5: Yes, all the things. Yes, yes, exactly.
- 31:05Speaker 3: And people can go to stand up for Pits dot
- 31:06Speaker 3: us correct all right, and it's pits with one T.
- 31:09Speaker 5: I kept making that mistake.
- 31:10Speaker 1: It is and you saw a bunch of q T
- 31:14Speaker 1: shirts too. People can support you by doing that.
- 31:16Speaker 5: Bye bye bye.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Yes with all of her different dogs on the T shirts.
- 31:19Speaker 1: How many dogs do you have now?
- 31:21Speaker 4: Currently? I have three? I have Todd, Glendon, Pippin.
- 31:23Speaker 5: Okay. I like the names. Also, they're a real deal. Yeah.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Well you met Doug, and Doug has a sister coming Denise.
- 31:30Speaker 5: Yeah, she's in my Orca right now.
- 31:32Speaker 4: How come he didn't come in for the show.
- 31:34Speaker 5: I don't know where. Sometimes he might have had an
- 31:37Speaker 5: appointment today. I figured he has his own full schedule.
- 31:41Speaker 4: Sure, he seemed kind of busy.
- 31:42Speaker 1: He has a friend next door. Sometimes he goes through
- 31:44Speaker 1: the thing and sees her. Well, Rebecca, I'm so glad
- 31:49Speaker 1: you came. I'm so glad we reconnected. Me too, and
- 31:52Speaker 1: we'll see more of each other.
- 31:53Speaker 4: All right, Chelsea, thank you so much for doing this
- 31:56Speaker 4: like you're You're a sweetheart.
- 31:58Speaker 5: For appreciate pleasure. You deserve it.
