- 0:20Speaker 3: And I still have faith in that. One bad game,
- 0:23Speaker 3: and I can overlook that.
- 0:24Speaker 2: I have a feeling for the team, as we all know.
- 0:27Speaker 2: And they are going to stomp on— in fact, not that
- 0:29Speaker 2: I wish injury on anyone, but I don't know if Aaron—
- 0:31Speaker 2: Of course you do. I don't know if Aaron Rodgers
- 0:33Speaker 2: is going to finish the game. I see some of
- 0:35Speaker 2: those ball-knower parties, almost like the framers of the Constitution,
- 0:40Speaker 2: debating the Constitution. I see that same type of intensity
- 0:45Speaker 2: with their gatherings. It was a great conversation. Where do
- 0:48Speaker 2: these take place? Whose basement do these take place? Whose
- 0:51Speaker 2: mother's basement.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Do these take place in?
- 0:53Speaker 4: Are there snacks?
- 0:54Speaker 3: I would say that they start in the group chat.
- 0:57Speaker 2: This is virtual. Yeah, so this is like going on
- 0:59Speaker 2: while we're all watching. Is there a place where you
- 1:02Speaker 2: get all this information? Like, this is what you call this?
- 1:05Speaker 2: It's the dark web. Yeah, it's a really dark web.
- 1:09Speaker 2: It's a deep web.
- 1:11Speaker 5: I mostly just Google stuff if I don't know where
- 1:14Speaker 5: I ask somebody that will.
- 1:16Speaker 2: So if you run the play and put it in Copilot, say,
- 1:20Speaker 2: what is the name of this play? Will Copilot spit
- 1:22Speaker 2: it out? No, I have playbooks. Plural.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I have one from many leather-bound books. I just
- 1:27Speaker 3: look at the concepts.
- 1:28Speaker 2: And look at the concepts. Do you buy these on
- 1:30Speaker 2: the black market? Like, how do you meet somebody behind
- 1:32Speaker 2: Stop and Shop and... You know. Hey, man. You looking
- 1:35Speaker 2: for playbooks? This is Patriots Unfiltered. Presented by Toyota.com. All right,
- 1:43Speaker 2: welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. All three lights are on. I
- 1:46Speaker 2: don't know which camera to look at. It is Wednesday
- 1:50Speaker 2: here at Gillette Stadium, and it's Paul, it's me, it's Deuce,
- 1:54Speaker 2: it's Matt in the booth.
- 1:55Speaker 3: That's the all-22 version of.
- 1:56Speaker 2: It's the all-22. I don't know what people are seeing, but.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Get us all.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess so.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Monitor's right there.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Somebody tell Engineering all the tally lights are on at once.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Now we've got two. Okay. But... Today is historically our
- 2:12Speaker 2: turn the page day. Wednesday is when we turn the
- 2:14Speaker 2: page from the previous game to the next opponent. So
- 2:19Speaker 2: in this case, we are turning the page to the
- 2:21Speaker 2: Pittsburgh Steelers for a home game at 1 o'clock on
- 2:25Speaker 2: Sunday here at Gillette Stadium. So we're going to get
- 2:27Speaker 2: right into that. I've already made my thoughts known. I'm not,
- 2:32Speaker 2: you know, no suspense here with me. We are going
- 2:34Speaker 2: to walk all over Pittsburgh on Sunday.
- 2:37Speaker 3: I kind of share your feeling.
- 2:38Speaker 2: We're going to take.
- 2:40Speaker 3: I do.
- 2:40Speaker 1: What?
- 2:41Speaker 3: I kind of should. I said I told you off
- 2:43Speaker 3: the air. I wish I could get into a nice
- 2:45Speaker 3: 45 minute argument. Have Mike just laugh at us off
- 2:48Speaker 3: to the side. But I can't because I don't argue
- 2:51Speaker 3: things that I don't necessarily believe. And I feel like.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Like you do.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I feel the Patriots will have a nice bounce back
- 2:58Speaker 3: at home. Gillette Stadium crowd to welcome the defending AFC
- 3:01Speaker 3: champions here. I know the weather is not supposed to
- 3:03Speaker 3: be great. which could subdue the crowd a little bit.
- 3:06Speaker 3: A little rain in the forecast. A little early in
- 3:08Speaker 3: the week.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Is that what they're saying?
- 3:09Speaker 3: A little early in the week, but I heard there's
- 3:11Speaker 3: some rain in the forecast. I think the defense is
- 3:15Speaker 3: going to force some turnovers, make life a little easier
- 3:18Speaker 3: on the offense. I think Fred's a little worried about
- 3:20Speaker 3: the offense, the offense, as Todd in North Carolina would say. Um,
- 3:24Speaker 3: and I think it can lead to some short fields and,
- 3:27Speaker 3: and I kind of agree with Freddie. I think a relatively,
- 3:30Speaker 3: relatively comfortable way.
- 3:31Speaker 2: If this can happen, why can't we figure out Palestine
- 3:34Speaker 2: and Israel?
- 3:35Speaker 3: I don't know why you would bring that up. I
- 3:36Speaker 3: really don't, but you know.
- 3:38Speaker 2: You do you.
- 3:40Speaker 3: And I knew he was going to say it before
- 3:43Speaker 3: he came out.
- 3:43Speaker 1: There you go.
- 3:44Speaker 6: You guys are making inroads and fawning. Yeah, I started
- 3:48Speaker 6: with last year's Pittsburgh game, which reminded me a lot
- 3:50Speaker 6: of this year's Seattle game, which is the inflicted mistakes.
- 3:55Speaker 6: It felt like they could have taken control of that game,
- 3:57Speaker 6: and they just kept. It started with the Ramondre Stevenson
- 3:59Speaker 6: fumble early on. A couple of Drake May fumbles there
- 4:02Speaker 6: where it's just, get down, get down, live to fight
- 4:05Speaker 6: another day. So that's always in the back of my head.
- 4:08Speaker 6: I would say generally I like the Patriots spot coming in.
- 4:12Speaker 6: But I thought, you know, Pittsburgh was, their defense is just,
- 4:15Speaker 6: they were unimpressive on offense. And, you know, I think
- 4:18Speaker 6: it was like something like 10 targets for DK with
- 4:21Speaker 6: like two or three receptions.
- 4:22Speaker 2: He had a couple OPIs. Like it just didn't look right.
- 4:24Speaker 3: That worries me a little bit.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Because I think he's a pretty good player. He had
- 4:27Speaker 3: some drops. He didn't look good. Generally good players don't,
- 4:31Speaker 3: you know, that kind of stuff doesn't snowball. So that
- 4:34Speaker 3: does worry me a little bit.
- 4:35Speaker 6: It's interesting for all the coaching changes. It just, it
- 4:37Speaker 6: feels like the same. team to me. I mean, you know,
- 4:39Speaker 6: the defensively, the personnel's all pretty much the same. Uh,
- 4:43Speaker 6: and certainly offensively, uh, you know, bringing in, um, the
- 4:46Speaker 6: guy from Indianapolis.
- 4:47Speaker 2: The receiver, we should have beat him last year with
- 4:50Speaker 2: a team. I don't think Michael Pittman is as good
- 4:52Speaker 2: as the team is now. We're going to beat him
- 4:54Speaker 2: this year. All that said, I I'm still a lot,
- 4:59Speaker 2: tons of respect for Aaron Rogers. He's still one of
- 5:02Speaker 2: the great passers in the history of football. And he, I,
- 5:06Speaker 2: you know, I saw some of the game, uh, last week.
- 5:09Speaker 2: He can still throw the ball.
- 5:10Speaker 3: He can still throw. There's no doubt. I just think
- 5:12Speaker 3: he's not interested in standing in the pocket taking any hits.
- 5:15Speaker 2: And he's really smart. And he gets the ball out
- 5:17Speaker 2: of his hand quickly. He's very decisive. He's very accurate.
- 5:22Speaker 2: But he's not prime Aaron Rodgers. He's not going to
- 5:27Speaker 2: pick up the yards like he used to on the
- 5:29Speaker 2: ground when things break down. And like Paul said, he
- 5:34Speaker 2: wants to get the ball out of his hands early.
- 5:37Speaker 2: So In that way, there is a blueprint for him.
- 5:42Speaker 2: So while I respect the hell out of his physical abilities,
- 5:46Speaker 2: I just think he's not the guy he used to be,
- 5:50Speaker 2: and I think that's advantage Patriots. Because I do like
- 5:54Speaker 2: our defense.
- 5:55Speaker 6: Yeah, some of the players in the locker room were
- 5:57Speaker 6: saying they thought he looked a little bit more mobile
- 5:59Speaker 6: in that first game than he maybe looked last year.
- 6:01Speaker 4: I thought that too.
- 6:02Speaker 3: I would agree.
- 6:02Speaker 4: The touchdown throw, he got out a little bit.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I would agree.
- 6:04Speaker 6: Um, but I think he has shown that he can
- 6:07Speaker 6: pick you apart short with the quick game. And if
- 6:08Speaker 6: you let him do that, um, then I think you
- 6:11Speaker 6: could be, you could be in trouble, especially if he
- 6:13Speaker 6: starts connecting with DK Metcalf, you know, downfield that's.
- 6:16Speaker 3: And he had one downfield to Roman Wilson too, right.
- 6:19Speaker 3: In the Atlanta game. But I do think my I'm,
- 6:22Speaker 3: I'm with Mike. I feel like he wants to get
- 6:24Speaker 3: the ball out quick and on time. And I make
- 6:27Speaker 3: some of the things that Patriots have been doing to
- 6:29Speaker 3: quarterbacks that are limited, uh, And I think at this point,
- 6:33Speaker 3: Rodgers is a little limited. Now, I don't think you're
- 6:34Speaker 3: going to confuse him very often.
- 6:36Speaker 2: No.
- 6:37Speaker 3: You know, I think he's seen it all, so I
- 6:38Speaker 3: don't think you're going to surprise him with stuff. But
- 6:41Speaker 3: I do think you can get there quickly and force
- 6:43Speaker 3: the ball out quickly because, again, at 42 years of age,
- 6:46Speaker 3: he's not.
- 6:48Speaker 3: I don't think he wants to take many hits. So
- 6:51Speaker 3: he's going to get the ball out, and I'd live
- 6:53Speaker 3: with that all day. You've just got to rally to
- 6:55Speaker 3: the ball and tackle.
- 6:55Speaker 2: It's kind of like older Brady. If you can get
- 6:58Speaker 2: that push up the middle so he can't step up,
- 7:01Speaker 2: he's got nowhere to step up into, I think you're
- 7:05Speaker 2: going to disrupt his timing. It's a good matchup.
- 7:07Speaker 4: I was just reading a little bit.
- 7:08Speaker 6: Their center, Zach Frazier, was very good last week with
- 7:11Speaker 6: not allowing that pressure up the gut, but that to
- 7:13Speaker 6: me seems like a great place to start with.
- 7:16Speaker 2: And does that kind of tie into the signing that
- 7:19Speaker 2: they had? You know, with the linemen? Like, knowing, let's
- 7:23Speaker 2: get that push?
- 7:25Speaker 6: No, I think he's more, I'd see him more as
- 7:26Speaker 6: like a rotational run defender when we need some beef.
- 7:29Speaker 3: To get in there. Yeah, I agree with Mike.
- 7:31Speaker 6: But he'll be in there a little bit. I mean,
- 7:33Speaker 6: he's got good size. I just like having the option.
- 7:36Speaker 6: That's what I've been saying. Even if it wasn't Tonga,
- 7:38Speaker 6: you just need a guy who's like 320, 330 on
- 7:41Speaker 6: your team to put in there for situations.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Listen, the Seahawks couldn't sustain offense in the first half
- 7:47Speaker 3: of the game because they kept committing penalties, quite frankly.
- 7:50Speaker 3: They kept putting themselves behind the chains for their own doing,
- 7:54Speaker 3: and they weren't able, because of that, to continue to
- 7:56Speaker 3: run Price. When Price ran the ball, he was effective.
- 7:59Speaker 3: He averaged over five yards a carry. He only got
- 8:01Speaker 3: 10 carries.
- 8:03Speaker 1: So.
- 8:03Speaker 3: It's not hard to envision Pittsburgh coming in saying, we
- 8:08Speaker 3: think we can run on these guys with Jalen Warren
- 8:11Speaker 3: and Rico Dowdle. And, you know, has the Patriots fixed
- 8:15Speaker 3: any of those problems? I think Daquan Jones is here
- 8:18Speaker 3: to help fix some of that. And quite frankly, I
- 8:21Speaker 3: think they have to be better on the inside and
- 8:24Speaker 3: they have to tackle better. I think the linebackers, I
- 8:27Speaker 3: thought Ellis had some really good moments. He had a
- 8:30Speaker 3: great run stuff early in the game on a short
- 8:32Speaker 3: yardage play. He shed a block and just stuck, I
- 8:36Speaker 3: think it was Price, right in the hole and limited
- 8:40Speaker 3: no yards after contact, but they need more of that.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Yeah, early on in last week's game, you could see,
- 8:45Speaker 2: you know, the run defense would go one way, and
- 8:50Speaker 2: if the runner, Price in this case, saw the opening,
- 8:54Speaker 2: it was there. There was room to go because it
- 8:57Speaker 2: seemed like, you know, they were overplaying to one side
- 9:00Speaker 2: a lot, you know, over-pursuing maybe or whatever, but they've
- 9:04Speaker 2: got to be more even across the line.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, that's just, you know, the wide zone.
- 9:08Speaker 2: He's got good vision.
- 9:09Speaker 6: I mean, we saw Kenneth Walker do it too, but
- 9:11Speaker 6: I thought Price looked like he fit into that scheme
- 9:14Speaker 6: pretty well. So, yeah, I think some of that is
- 9:16Speaker 6: just getting used to playing again and, you know, maintaining
- 9:19Speaker 6: the run fits up front.
- 9:21Speaker 2: But, you know, really I think like the screen.
- 9:23Speaker 6: Game with Warren and Dowdle and the two tight ends,
- 9:26Speaker 6: Those are kind of matchups that continue to concern me.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Legit concerns, Mike, based on what we saw in the summer.
- 9:31Speaker 6: Right, and not overwhelming production, but on those fourth and
- 9:35Speaker 6: twos or the red zone plays, obviously the size they
- 9:39Speaker 6: have at tight end there with Washington is impressive.
- 9:44Speaker 2: He's a big dude.
- 9:45Speaker 6: Fire him off a little bit more of the traditional
- 9:47Speaker 6: receiving tight end, but I think those are in the
- 9:49Speaker 6: margins where A team like Pittsburgh can make some damage, whereas,
- 9:53Speaker 6: you know, all right, I feel good about the secondary.
- 9:55Speaker 6: I mean, they've got three good weapons. Seems like Roman
- 9:57Speaker 6: Wilson's coming on a little bit for them. So I
- 10:00Speaker 6: think they've got three good guys, but I think the
- 10:01Speaker 6: Patriots have three good corners that match up pretty well, too.
- 10:04Speaker 3: And, you know, the way we're talking about it, and
- 10:06Speaker 3: I think we're all in agreement, I think this is
- 10:07Speaker 3: an offense the Patriots should be able to contain. But
- 10:11Speaker 3: if you think back to last year's game, there's nothing
- 10:14Speaker 3: really different. I felt the same way. As a matter
- 10:16Speaker 3: of fact, I think Pittsburgh's probably better offensively from a
- 10:19Speaker 3: personnel standpoint with Pittman, with Metcalf and Wilson, you know,
- 10:24Speaker 3: but you had an opening drive touchdown. They went right
- 10:29Speaker 3: down the field. And I think the Patriots went three
- 10:32Speaker 3: and out, and then they went 90 yards right down
- 10:34Speaker 3: the field to go up 14, nothing. Same kind of
- 10:37Speaker 3: pedestrian offense last year. So they don't want to fall
- 10:41Speaker 3: behind that kind of a hole. That was before all
- 10:43Speaker 3: the turnovers happened. The turnovers prevented the Patriots from being
- 10:47Speaker 3: able to come back and win, but They fell behind
- 10:49Speaker 3: on their own without all those mistakes. So you don't
- 10:52Speaker 3: want to let that happen. I think this is an
- 10:54Speaker 3: average offense.
- 10:55Speaker 2: You mentioned they didn't play with Gonzo.
- 10:56Speaker 3: No, that's a good point. Because I think that you
- 10:59Speaker 3: did notice those first three games that the defense wasn't
- 11:01Speaker 3: as good.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Pittsburgh's defense. Are we worried about Cameron Hayward still?
- 11:07Speaker 3: I worry about Cameron Hayward, yes.
- 11:08Speaker 6: There's always a big presence inside. And I think I am,
- 11:11Speaker 6: as we get used to the new Jared Wilson at center,
- 11:14Speaker 6: how does he match up against these kind of big-body
- 11:16Speaker 6: guys today? Rabel had the stat of how many passes
- 11:19Speaker 6: deflected that these guys.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Have had at the line of scrimmage.
- 11:22Speaker 3: I mean, it's 64, 64. I'm going to guess that's
- 11:25Speaker 3: an exact total.
- 11:26Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 11:26Speaker 6: I mean, that's, I mean, they're not going to, they're
- 11:27Speaker 6: going to rush for guys. I mean, they've got, they
- 11:30Speaker 6: do what they do.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I was listening to catch 22 before we came on
- 11:33Speaker 2: and Evan was saying, well, you know, the offensive line
- 11:35Speaker 2: is really four out of the five guys are the
- 11:37Speaker 2: same as last year. It's only one, but really you
- 11:40Speaker 2: got to count Wilson going into center. It's something new. Yeah.
- 11:43Speaker 2: You know that. So it's really two.
- 11:45Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 11:46Speaker 6: Two big differences on the line. Game three for Will
- 11:49Speaker 6: Campbell and Jared Wilson in their careers. So, you know,
- 11:51Speaker 6: I mean, there is some difference in terms of experience.
- 11:53Speaker 3: And I would also say, and I think I heard
- 11:55Speaker 3: Brian Hoyer yesterday talking about this, just how important it
- 12:01Speaker 3: is for the offensive line to sort of play together.
- 12:04Speaker 3: And as Dante used to say, see it the same.
- 12:07Speaker 3: And this is one of those things, and I've been
- 12:10Speaker 3: defensive of the Patriots' decision not to play their starters
- 12:14Speaker 3: in the preseason, but They haven't played a lot of,
- 12:17Speaker 3: you know, quote-unquote live snaps together yet. One game. So
- 12:21Speaker 3: maybe that is a work in progress, too. And you're right, Fred,
- 12:23Speaker 3: because Vera Tucker wasn't there, and Wilson's in a different spot.
- 12:27Speaker 3: So they need to make sure that they're seeing things,
- 12:30Speaker 3: because if there's one way that Pittsburgh is going to
- 12:32Speaker 3: stay in the game, my guess is it's going to
- 12:34Speaker 3: be that front seven, you know, creating some turnovers.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's everything.
- 12:39Speaker 8: I mean.
- 12:40Speaker 4: come walk coming off the edge.
- 12:41Speaker 3: I mean, that's, you know, high Smith, her big, these
- 12:44Speaker 3: guys have been active on the outside. Um, and I,
- 12:47Speaker 3: I worry the most about Haywood for what you guys
- 12:49Speaker 3: are talking about over Jared Wilson.
- 12:51Speaker 2: You know, back in the day, if you had a
- 12:52Speaker 2: guy like what, and I'm not saying he's like his,
- 12:56Speaker 2: his brother when he was with the Texans, but you know,
- 12:59Speaker 2: Belichick would, he'd have a way to contain that person.
- 13:03Speaker 2: You know, we're not going to let JJ watt ruin
- 13:05Speaker 2: the game for us. Um, Is TJ Watt to that
- 13:09Speaker 2: level where you focus so much on him the way
- 13:13Speaker 2: Bill would focus on, you know, Clay Matthews, for example?
- 13:17Speaker 6: I might say, I mean, I think they're both excellent
- 13:19Speaker 6: players and both can ruin a game. I would just
- 13:21Speaker 6: say with JJ, you could kind of move him around
- 13:23Speaker 6: a little bit more, I would say. I mean, TJ
- 13:25Speaker 6: is going to be coming off the edge, but that's
- 13:27Speaker 6: the only real difference I see.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Well, JJ was very active. as a defensive tackle, defensive end.
- 13:35Speaker 3: He was bigger and more physical. That was his game. TJ,
- 13:39Speaker 3: I've been interested in reading some stuff yesterday that he
- 13:43Speaker 3: has been more willing to allow him to be moved
- 13:46Speaker 3: around a little bit. I guess he's not exclusively off
- 13:51Speaker 3: that right side anymore. That is where he was when
- 13:55Speaker 3: he had that big play.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Their right side, our left side.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Normally, he would be over Morgan Moses. Yeah. then I
- 14:02Speaker 3: think that's probably where he'll spend the majority of his time.
- 14:05Speaker 2: So their left side, our right side.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Their left side and coming off the right side of
- 14:08Speaker 3: the offense. I think, you know, and maybe if we
- 14:11Speaker 3: were in Australia, we'd look at it the opposite way.
- 14:13Speaker 3: But I think in the U.S., we go by the offense.
- 14:16Speaker 9: Right.
- 14:17Speaker 3: No, I'm just kidding. Yeah, the offensive right side. But
- 14:20Speaker 3: I saw something that they moved him around a little bit.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Patrick Graham, who Patriots fans should be familiar with. It's
- 14:27Speaker 3: another little kind of wrinkle there. He had a good plan.
- 14:31Speaker 3: He knows Josh McDaniels. He was Josh's defensive coordinator with
- 14:34Speaker 3: the Raiders. He had a good plan for the Patriots
- 14:37Speaker 3: last year in the opener as the defensive coordinator for Vegas.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Held the Patriots down in that game. Maybe you can
- 14:45Speaker 3: make an argument that was Drake May's worst game last year.
- 14:49Speaker 2: What about McCarthy as a coach?
- 14:51Speaker 3: Good coach.
- 14:52Speaker 4: Letting Aaron Rodgers do what Aaron Rodgers wants to do.
- 14:55Speaker 4: Like I said, it's not... It wasn't a wholesale change.
- 14:58Speaker 4: You know, it's like you kind of came in and
- 14:59Speaker 4: it's still Cam Hayward.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Well, they still don't have a quarterback. I mean, I
- 15:04Speaker 3: know they have Aaron Rodgers, and I know that sounds
- 15:06Speaker 3: awfully disrespectful, but he's 42, and he does not, as
- 15:09Speaker 3: you said, Fred, earlier in the show, he doesn't want
- 15:12Speaker 3: to run around and make plays like.
- 15:13Speaker 8: He used to.
- 15:14Speaker 10: No.
- 15:14Speaker 6: I mean, I don't want to say a bad spot,
- 15:17Speaker 6: but I think. Aaron Rodgers in December is going to
- 15:19Speaker 6: look a lot different than Aaron Rodgers in week two.
- 15:21Speaker 2: He looked pretty spry, pretty youthful last week.
- 15:24Speaker 3: I was surprised with how mobile he looked.
- 15:26Speaker 6: It's going to start to build up a little bit
- 15:28Speaker 6: on him, but you have to get to that point.
- 15:31Speaker 4: You have to start putting those hits on him.
- 15:34Speaker 6: I think he's still good enough to beat this Patriots
- 15:37Speaker 6: team if this Patriots.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Team doesn't carry the ball.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Pittsburgh is one of those teams that if you don't
- 15:43Speaker 3: play well, they're going to beat you because they're generally
- 15:45Speaker 3: not going to beat themselves. So you have to show
- 15:48Speaker 3: up to play. That's how they go 9-8 every year.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I mean, if he starts, you know, the sprinkler, boom, boom, boom, boom,
- 15:53Speaker 2: and we get into a little bit of a blender there,
- 15:56Speaker 2: then they start hitting us with some runs. Yeah. It
- 15:58Speaker 2: could be a long day.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:00Speaker 2: So we've got to establish.
- 16:02Speaker 3: He just talked himself out of an easy win.
- 16:04Speaker 2: We've got to establish early that that's not going to happen,
- 16:08Speaker 2: and I believe we will. I believe we're going to
- 16:11Speaker 2: be okay. Like I said at the outset.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Hit them early.
- 16:14Speaker 2: I like our defense. I like our defense. I like
- 16:19Speaker 2: how it played last week against Seattle, the world champs.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Do you really like how they played that much?
- 16:24Speaker 2: I do. I do. I think they stepped up in
- 16:27Speaker 2: big moments. They weren't. dominant that's fair they weren't not
- 16:30Speaker 2: you know they weren't they weren't keeping the other team
- 16:33Speaker 2: on their side of the field but they stepped up
- 16:36Speaker 2: when they had to and that's the sign of a
- 16:38Speaker 2: good defense.
- 16:38Speaker 3: I did make that point during the game when mike
- 16:40Speaker 3: and i said it seems like the patriots have won
- 16:42Speaker 3: all the important downs until they didn't but for the most.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Part like you said some of it was self-inflicted.
- 16:48Speaker 3: That's why i didn't i wasn't as high on the
- 16:50Speaker 3: defensive performance as some others and most people agree with
- 16:53Speaker 3: you fred i'm as usual on the a-hole on the
- 16:56Speaker 3: island i'm I'm.
- 16:57Speaker 2: A little bit more on a whole island too. I, I,
- 16:59Speaker 2: I was.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Scared, but Mike's a defense guy.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Don't dismiss that. It's early in the season. He doesn't
- 17:06Speaker 2: know what to think. He's, he's very timid at this point.
- 17:09Speaker 3: I thought Seattle did a lot of little things that
- 17:12Speaker 3: prevented them from scoring as opposed to the Patriots did
- 17:14Speaker 3: some things that prevented for them from scoring.
- 17:16Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 17:17Speaker 3: You know, and I'm not saying they didn't make any plays.
- 17:19Speaker 1: They did.
- 17:19Speaker 3: They made some plays. You know, I think of like,
- 17:23Speaker 3: What was it, like third and 19, where he fires
- 17:25Speaker 3: one over the middle to JSN over the line, and
- 17:30Speaker 3: he kind of brought himself back on his own, set
- 17:32Speaker 3: up a fourth and inches, and they get the fourth
- 17:35Speaker 3: and inches, but it gets called back because a guy
- 17:37Speaker 3: was lined up over the ball. Again, nothing that the
- 17:40Speaker 3: Patriots did. The touchdown that they had called back, illegal shift,
- 17:44Speaker 3: nothing the Patriots did, just got called back. You know,
- 17:47Speaker 3: it's one thing if it gets called back because... Draymond
- 17:51Speaker 3: Jones has a great rush off the edge, and they've
- 17:53Speaker 3: got to hold him. You know, that's something the Patriots forced.
- 17:56Speaker 3: I thought Seattle had a lot of pre-snap penalties and
- 17:59Speaker 3: alignment penalties. Even the scramble that Drew Locke had in
- 18:03Speaker 3: the red zone that set up the go-ahead field goal,
- 18:05Speaker 3: that should have been a touchdown. He gets stopped inside
- 18:08Speaker 3: the five to set up second and inches, and they
- 18:13Speaker 3: can't get lined up. Because they can't get lined up
- 18:15Speaker 3: and they're confused, they end up taking a delay game call.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Five yards down there is huge.
- 18:21Speaker 2: That changed everything. That's huge.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Makes it second and sixth instead of second and fourth.
- 18:25Speaker 3: And again, you're playing with your backup quarterback. I'm sure
- 18:28Speaker 3: Mike McDonald was impressing upon his new offensive coordinator, Brian Flurry. Hey,
- 18:33Speaker 3: we got the three. Let's make sure we come out
- 18:35Speaker 3: of this possession with the lead. No chances down here. Again,
- 18:39Speaker 3: I didn't think the Patriots played bad on defense. Don't
- 18:43Speaker 3: get me wrong. They played, I thought, perfectly fine on defense.
- 18:47Speaker 3: I thought Seattle... was the reason why Seattle didn't score
- 18:50Speaker 3: 21 or 24 points, more so than New England was.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:53Speaker 4: They've got to get turnovers.
- 18:54Speaker 6: I think that, to me, is the piece that's been
- 18:56Speaker 6: missing the last couple games. I know they did a
- 18:59Speaker 6: pretty good job in the playoffs, doing those up until Seattle.
- 19:03Speaker 6: But I always think forced fumbles are such a sign
- 19:05Speaker 6: of a defense that really is aggressive and makes plays in. Also,
- 19:10Speaker 6: making plays behind the line on their side of the
- 19:11Speaker 6: line of scrimmage. I don't think there were really many
- 19:13Speaker 6: of those at all against Seattle. That's how you get
- 19:16Speaker 6: the picks.
- 19:17Speaker 3: You get the quick pressure, get the ball out. I
- 19:21Speaker 3: think Rodgers threw one to them last year on a
- 19:23Speaker 3: play like that. He was under heavy pressure and just
- 19:26Speaker 3: threw it. I think Spillane may have had that interception.
- 19:30Speaker 2: I just can't wait for the early Patriots defensive success.
- 19:35Speaker 2: And Rodgers, you know, starting to get mad. That's what
- 19:39Speaker 2: I'm hoping for.
- 19:40Speaker 3: But that's why I said I think it's important to
- 19:42Speaker 3: get some heat on him early. Don't let him think, oh,
- 19:44Speaker 3: I still got it. I still got it. You see,
- 19:48Speaker 3: I'm dicing these guys up. Don't give them that like swagger.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:52Speaker 6: I think you'd hope with the, I mean, you said
- 19:54Speaker 6: the weather, but hopefully it comes out the fans here.
- 19:57Speaker 4: Good energy.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Patriots get off to a good start.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Don't you expect that? I mean, I know about the start,
- 20:01Speaker 3: but don't you expect a lot of energy in the stadium?
- 20:04Speaker 2: I never know what to expect with our crowd.
- 20:06Speaker 3: You just don't like the crowd. You want to make
- 20:09Speaker 3: fun of me for not liking the fans, but you're
- 20:11Speaker 3: the one who doesn't like the crowd.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Maybe it's a compliment to New England sports fans, but
- 20:14Speaker 2: we're not just blind whatever. We're going to cheer. I
- 20:19Speaker 2: don't know.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Celtics fans are pretty maniacal.
- 20:20Speaker 2: There's always in their mind... you know, the narratives that
- 20:26Speaker 2: are out there on sports radio and Paul's shows.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 20:29Speaker 2: And I think that that kind of tempers enthusiasm sometimes.
- 20:32Speaker 2: He blames it on me. Yeah, no, your shows. You
- 20:34Speaker 2: and your shows.
- 20:35Speaker 3: I temper the enthusiasm on my shows.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I think.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Which, by the way, tune in later on Sports Hub.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I think, you know, we have a tendency in this
- 20:43Speaker 2: region to wait for the next shoe to drop. You know, so...
- 20:46Speaker 2: And I think that tempers enthusiasm, whereas in Kansas City...
- 20:51Speaker 2: It doesn't matter. They're loud no matter what. Denver, they're
- 20:56Speaker 2: loud no matter what. Not so much here.
- 20:59Speaker 6: No, well, it's too bad, I think, about the rally
- 21:02Speaker 6: when they went off to the Super Bowl, and that was,
- 21:04Speaker 6: you know, vibes were as high as they're ever going
- 21:07Speaker 6: to be in that, you know, and to go excluding
- 21:09Speaker 6: the preseason games, but then to, you know, flip the switch.
- 21:12Speaker 4: I know what you're saying, Fred.
- 21:12Speaker 6: I just, I would hope that we can say, all right,
- 21:15Speaker 6: they lost two games to Seattle. These are still our guys.
- 21:17Speaker 6: Remember Drake, Drake May, all that stuff last year?
- 21:19Speaker 2: That was really fun. Let's get excited again and start
- 21:22Speaker 2: to get some wins.
- 21:23Speaker 3: I think at least at the outset of this game
- 21:25Speaker 3: on Sunday, the crowd is going to be into it.
- 21:28Speaker 3: There'll be good energy in the building.
- 21:29Speaker 2: I just worry because I hear so many people say,
- 21:32Speaker 2: it was such a disappointment. Oh, such a letdown. Really?
- 21:39Speaker 12: I mean.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Come on. Like, if there was a game like the
- 21:43Speaker 2: Super Bowl, okay, I would, here we go again. But
- 21:45Speaker 2: it was a very competitive game right up until the
- 21:48Speaker 2: last interception. Come on. The ball was in our hands
- 21:52Speaker 2: with a chance to win the game. Isn't that, in
- 21:54Speaker 2: this league, what you're looking for? You know, the ball
- 21:58Speaker 2: in your hands.
- 21:58Speaker 3: They're not all built the same. I am much more
- 22:02Speaker 3: disappointed with the way they played in this game than
- 22:05Speaker 3: I was in the Super Bowl.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Really?
- 22:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:10Speaker 3: I thought they just got outclassed in the Super Bowl.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Wasn't that disappointing?
- 22:14Speaker 3: No, it was much more disappointing to contribute to your demise.
- 22:17Speaker 3: I know, but I didn't... Which I think they did
- 22:18Speaker 3: in this game. Going into the Super Bowl, I did
- 22:20Speaker 3: not expect to be outclassed. Well, what I expected going
- 22:25Speaker 3: in wasn't that. I didn't expect to get dominated like that,
- 22:29Speaker 3: but I watched it. The other team was a lot better.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, but that was disappointing.
- 22:33Speaker 3: That wasn't the case last Wednesday night. The other team
- 22:36Speaker 3: was better, I thought, but... You made it easy for
- 22:39Speaker 3: them by giving them the ball and not really executing
- 22:43Speaker 3: on offense. I thought you set it up. So I
- 22:45Speaker 3: think you made it easy for their defense.
- 22:47Speaker 2: I know.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Their shorthanded defense that was missing all that personnel.
- 22:50Speaker 2: But I put that in.
- 22:50Speaker 3: You just kept creating long yardage situations.
- 22:53Speaker 2: I put that into the context of week one. Maybe.
- 22:56Speaker 2: You know.
- 22:57Speaker 3: That's why I'm saying it was disappointing.
- 22:58Speaker 2: So I was a little bit more forgiving. I was
- 23:01Speaker 2: much more disappointed in the performance of the Super Bowl
- 23:03Speaker 2: because I thought we would compete. And we got dominated.
- 23:07Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 23:07Speaker 2: So I was really, this one, yeah, I mean, of
- 23:10Speaker 2: course you want to win, you're disappointed you didn't win,
- 23:12Speaker 2: but the mistakes and, you know, I kind of, again,
- 23:17Speaker 2: put it in the context of week one. And like
- 23:20Speaker 2: I said, we had the ball in our hands with
- 23:22Speaker 2: a chance to win the game.
- 23:23Speaker 6: There's a lot of things on week one that I
- 23:25Speaker 6: think you come out of that week and you're wondering
- 23:27Speaker 6: what's real, what isn't, what's just sloppiness. This is our
- 23:29Speaker 6: first game, you know, so. I love that our fan base, though,
- 23:33Speaker 6: win or lose, they ride the roller coaster. So, like,
- 23:35Speaker 6: they never seem to, like, get hip to, like, well,
- 23:36Speaker 6: you know, we beat Cincinnati. You know, like, they never
- 23:39Speaker 6: seem to take stock of it. They just are prisoners
- 23:40Speaker 6: of the moment, and that's what's great about it. You know,
- 23:43Speaker 6: there's just an air of tension right now.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Like, I saw this thing yesterday, making the rounds on
- 23:48Speaker 3: social media. It was last year, these five teams started
- 23:53Speaker 3: 0-1 and ended up making the playoffs. And, you know,
- 23:58Speaker 3: don't overreact to week one. I'm like, Oh, so nine
- 24:01Speaker 3: teams that started 1-0 made the playoffs. We're just going
- 24:04Speaker 3: to ignore that. It's a bad thing to win your
- 24:06Speaker 3: first game.
- 24:07Speaker 2: I think the point is, it doesn't... Of course it matters.
- 24:10Speaker 2: It's one game. It's one freaking game.
- 24:13Speaker 6: Especially being the first game with less tackling and all
- 24:17Speaker 6: those things. But I do, I've always felt that, just
- 24:20Speaker 6: generally speaking... It's going to take the offensive line a
- 24:22Speaker 6: few games to really get in sync. It's going to
- 24:24Speaker 6: be a little bit disjointed early on, probably. The tackling's
- 24:27Speaker 6: not going to be that great early on. Those are
- 24:29Speaker 6: just things I always come to think of. So I'm
- 24:32Speaker 6: convinced we're going to whomp them. But for the sake
- 24:35Speaker 6: of argument, let's talk about what's the one thing that
- 24:41Speaker 6: can happen with a Patriots lose this game for you guys?
- 24:45Speaker 6: And I'll chime in, too.
- 24:46Speaker 2: I mean, is it bad to start with turnovers?
- 24:48Speaker 3: You can't use turnovers.
- 24:49Speaker 2: You can't use turnovers.
- 24:51Speaker 4: Uh, it can't run the ball again.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Can't run the ball.
- 24:53Speaker 4: Can't run the ball again.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:55Speaker 3: I would say you can't stop the run. Like Pittsburgh
- 24:59Speaker 3: is able to stay in all kinds of manageable situations.
- 25:03Speaker 3: So the Patriots can't dial it up and can't get
- 25:05Speaker 3: exotic and, and send more, more guys because it's always
- 25:09Speaker 3: third and two instead of third and 10. And, Rogers
- 25:13Speaker 3: is able to pick you apart because the running game
- 25:15Speaker 3: makes it easy for him.
- 25:16Speaker 2: I'd say if, if we, if we end the first
- 25:19Speaker 2: half with less than 120 passing yards, we're in trouble.
- 25:25Speaker 2: We've got to, we've got to get that passing game going.
- 25:28Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Because if, if we don't, man, they're gonna, they're gonna
- 25:32Speaker 2: stifle our run. They're gonna load the box that they're
- 25:35Speaker 2: gonna dare us to pass, you know? So we've got
- 25:38Speaker 2: to get that passing game going where, They have to
- 25:41Speaker 2: respect it.
- 25:42Speaker 3: I don't think they're going to load the box. I
- 25:45Speaker 3: think they're going to sit with the two deep safeties
- 25:49Speaker 3: and dare you to do it underneath.
- 25:51Speaker 2: We've got to do it. We've got to take those profits.
- 25:53Speaker 2: We've got to get that passing game going. And we've
- 25:57Speaker 2: got to get Romeo Dobbs going. That's a good one.
- 26:01Speaker 6: I wonder if you're able to run the ball, but
- 26:03Speaker 6: Pittsburgh is also able to run the ball. Now does
- 26:06Speaker 6: it come down to which quarterback you trust more and
- 26:08Speaker 6: kind of a shootout in favorable conditions? So I might
- 26:11Speaker 6: like Drake in that, but this is the narrative right now.
- 26:13Speaker 4: This is it.
- 26:14Speaker 6: Patrick Graham's going to come in here, and he's going
- 26:16Speaker 6: to play a ton of zone, and he's going to
- 26:17Speaker 6: do the same stuff, and he's going to play too
- 26:19Speaker 6: high safety. And if they can run the ball and
- 26:21Speaker 6: get them out of that, I mean, it's all so connected.
- 26:23Speaker 6: I thought we really got into it good yesterday. Or
- 26:27Speaker 6: Drake's got to just start to see it. And that
- 26:30Speaker 6: quote keeps popping up on my timeline from the Super
- 26:32Speaker 6: Bowl where Seattle's saying, it's not like Stafford where he
- 26:34Speaker 6: just rips it. He's got to see it first. And,
- 26:36Speaker 6: you know, I didn't expect him to suddenly see it
- 26:38Speaker 6: over the summer, but he still looks like he needs
- 26:40Speaker 6: to confirm the coverage. And it's a little late and
- 26:43Speaker 6: it's a little bit.
- 26:43Speaker 2: You know, I think that is an issue. I think,
- 26:47Speaker 2: you know, taking that next, we talked about this all
- 26:51Speaker 2: off season, taking the year three leap, which is more
- 26:54Speaker 2: of a mental leap for him than anything else. Obviously
- 26:58Speaker 2: we haven't seen it yet and it's still, it's still early.
- 27:01Speaker 2: can't expect it to happen overnight, but that's what we
- 27:05Speaker 2: have to see. Yeah. That's the next step in his evolution.
- 27:09Speaker 6: And in the context, I just remind people of is
- 27:12Speaker 6: a couple of years ago when I was here and
- 27:13Speaker 6: Belichick was asked about Brady, he felt like 2003 was
- 27:16Speaker 6: when it really all clicked for him.
- 27:18Speaker 2: I know he was very good up to that point.
- 27:19Speaker 6: But when he truly became in control of the offense,
- 27:22Speaker 6: Belichick felt like it.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Was, you know, his third year as a starter in
- 27:26Speaker 2: that system.
- 27:27Speaker 6: So, I think I'm guilty of it too, expecting Drake
- 27:31Speaker 6: May to suddenly make this monumental leap to football genius
- 27:34Speaker 6: here in week one. Like, I think it's going to
- 27:36Speaker 6: be a little bit more of a slow burn. We're
- 27:38Speaker 6: going to have to ride some of these ebbs and
- 27:40Speaker 6: flows with him. And it's just so weird when we
- 27:42Speaker 6: spend all those times over those years talking about Cam
- 27:44Speaker 6: Newton and how do they get a quarterback and is
- 27:46Speaker 6: Mac Jones the guy? And, you know, and then you
- 27:48Speaker 6: get this guy who's super talented and like the conversation
- 27:51Speaker 6: that we're having is like, He's got to take the
- 27:52Speaker 6: check downs.
- 27:54Speaker 2: That's what his.
- 27:54Speaker 4: Shortcoming is right now.
- 27:55Speaker 6: Would you ever think that was the thing that was
- 27:58Speaker 6: going to hold you back?
- 27:59Speaker 2: Yeah, but if you start doing that and you're successful,
- 28:03Speaker 2: that will open up the other stuff. Defenses are good, too.
- 28:07Speaker 2: We've talked about this before. Yes, it's an offensive league.
- 28:11Speaker 2: The rules now slant toward passing and all that. But
- 28:14Speaker 2: defensives over the last 10 years have grown more sophisticated
- 28:19Speaker 2: as well. And young quarterbacks... can get really put in
- 28:23Speaker 2: a blender in today's NFL. So he's, he's gotta, he's
- 28:30Speaker 2: gotta be able to recognize things at the line of
- 28:32Speaker 2: scrimmage faster and trust is, you know, trust what he's learned.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Cause we're still getting, you know, confirmation from.
- 28:40Speaker 6: Brable talking about the Julian love. It looks like he's
- 28:44Speaker 6: right there on blocked and variables. He got a cannon.
- 28:47Speaker 6: I mean, You're getting the head coach telling you that
- 28:49Speaker 6: the quarterback needs to be better at the line of scrimmage. And,
- 28:52Speaker 6: you know, again, another thing we talked about all summer long,
- 28:55Speaker 6: that's just if anything can offset A.J. Brown's loss, it's
- 28:59Speaker 6: can Drake continue to grow and put his guys in
- 29:01Speaker 6: the right position and get them out of bad plays and,
- 29:04Speaker 6: you know, all those different things. But I think what's
- 29:06Speaker 6: just frustrating is, again, to get to this point where
- 29:09Speaker 6: you get a fullback, you got Julian Hill.
- 29:12Speaker 2: It seemed like they really had a concerted effort this.
- 29:14Speaker 6: Offseason to get more physical in the run game and
- 29:17Speaker 6: change it and have more personnel to play with. And
- 29:19Speaker 6: then you get to week one, and you've got basically
- 29:21Speaker 6: one running back. You've got no blocking tight end again.
- 29:24Speaker 6: You've got the fullback in there. But if they can
- 29:27Speaker 6: get that run game going, I just think it'll really
- 29:29Speaker 6: help everything else and open up everything for Drake and
- 29:33Speaker 6: make it easier So.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Uh, practice today, we'll get our first injury report, uh,
- 29:38Speaker 2: of the week or participation report of the week. And
- 29:42Speaker 2: I'm guessing Henderson will be out there.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Well, Henderson was out at practice on Monday. So my
- 29:48Speaker 3: guess is he'll be listed as limited participation.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Are they in pads today? Oh, I don't know yet.
- 29:53Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 29:53Speaker 6: I don't know, but I would guess probably, I think,
- 29:57Speaker 6: you know, they got, yeah, they had a, you know,
- 29:59Speaker 6: they had that little practice on Monday, a little bit
- 30:01Speaker 6: of an extra one. But I would, I would anticipate
- 30:04Speaker 6: there'll be impacts.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:05Speaker 2: So what I think, like I said, what I think can,
- 30:11Speaker 2: can keep them from winning the game is they, they
- 30:14Speaker 2: just can't get the passing game going that it just
- 30:17Speaker 2: doesn't look right. Like we've seen in the past. I
- 30:22Speaker 2: think the loss of AJ Brown's huge because we talked
- 30:25Speaker 2: about this yesterday at, at the moment, You've lost booty.
- 30:30Speaker 2: You've lost digs and you've lost AJ Brown and you've
- 30:34Speaker 2: picked up Romeo Dobbs. So in that scenario, you really
- 30:38Speaker 2: have to hope that pop Douglas steps up, that he
- 30:42Speaker 2: plays better than he played last year. Hollins is Hollins.
- 30:45Speaker 2: I think he's, you know, I think he's solid. He's consistent.
- 30:49Speaker 13: I know.
- 30:49Speaker 2: I think, you know what to expect from him and
- 30:52Speaker 2: you're going to get it. But Williams, I think is
- 30:56Speaker 2: still a wild card. Don't know what I'm going to
- 30:58Speaker 2: get from him. And, I don't know. Is Chisholm going
- 31:00Speaker 2: to play? I'm not sure.
- 31:01Speaker 3: I think he will.
- 31:02Speaker 2: And if he does, we have no idea what he's
- 31:03Speaker 2: going to do.
- 31:03Speaker 3: I think he will, and I think he could be
- 31:05Speaker 3: one of those guys that you've been talking about, just
- 31:08Speaker 3: some easy throws for easy odds. I also look at
- 31:10Speaker 3: Hunter Henry.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:11Speaker 3: Because, you know, he's the guy that probably Drake now
- 31:15Speaker 3: feels the best about. He had a big game against
- 31:18Speaker 3: Pittsburgh last year. He had a couple of touchdowns.
- 31:21Speaker 14: And....
- 31:23Speaker 3: Matt Collins and Hunter Henry. Those are the two guys,
- 31:26Speaker 3: I think, that are on the roster that Drake probably
- 31:28Speaker 3: feels the best about throwing to. So I'd be surprised
- 31:31Speaker 3: if Henry wasn't a bigger part of the passing game, too.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Can we just, like, throw the ball on earlier downs sometimes?
- 31:38Speaker 3: I don't want to become this, like, shotgun, spread them out.
- 31:41Speaker 3: We're going to throw the ball 55 times. I don't
- 31:43Speaker 3: want that either. Again, I have no problem with the
- 31:45Speaker 3: balance they had in terms of runs and passes. I
- 31:49Speaker 3: just would like to change when they do both at times.
- 31:53Speaker 3: I don't want to be as predictable as they were,
- 31:55Speaker 3: I thought, in the first game.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:57Speaker 6: No, I think that's key. Call me crazy, and I'm sorry, Paul,
- 32:00Speaker 6: for doing this, but I don't know. I kind of
- 32:03Speaker 6: feel like is Chiz part of the answer to all this,
- 32:06Speaker 6: and I know that that sounds crazy.
- 32:08Speaker 4: It's the bottom of the depth.
- 32:09Speaker 3: Part of the answer for what?
- 32:11Speaker 2: To get Drake to be able to.
- 32:14Speaker 6: take the check downs and have confidence in somebody who's
- 32:16Speaker 6: going to get open quick consistently.
- 32:18Speaker 2: To be a volume. It's a projection for me.
- 32:22Speaker 3: But I just, I'm not ruling it out in the
- 32:24Speaker 3: game like this. Like he's going to not be part
- 32:27Speaker 3: of the other team's game plan at all. And they
- 32:30Speaker 3: might just say, we're going to throw the ball to
- 32:32Speaker 3: him eight or 10 times. Like, and we'll give him,
- 32:34Speaker 3: is it going to be an impact? I don't know,
- 32:37Speaker 3: but I could absolutely see him having a, like, handful
- 32:40Speaker 3: of catches i could see him but not playing too
- 32:43Speaker 3: i could see anything from from a guy like.
- 32:46Speaker 6: That yeah i just i i see him as a
- 32:48Speaker 6: unique guy on the roster maybe it's still that um
- 32:51Speaker 6: i'm enamored with that old julian edelman and danny amandola
- 32:55Speaker 6: thing but if drake had a guy underneath that he
- 32:59Speaker 6: trusted that's a little bit bigger than pop like we
- 33:01Speaker 6: haven't really seen it like Could that be more enticing
- 33:04Speaker 6: to him to not always have to.
- 33:05Speaker 4: He's like, man, I trust Chiz.
- 33:07Speaker 2: He's going to be where I need him to be
- 33:08Speaker 2: right off the line. I don't know.
- 33:09Speaker 3: He did it for three quarters. Drake did it for
- 33:13Speaker 3: three quarters. He did all the underneath stuff for three quarters.
- 33:17Speaker 2: They didn't score.
- 33:19Speaker 3: The efficiency was.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Through the roof.
- 33:22Speaker 3: I mean, he completed... I mean, even for the game,
- 33:25Speaker 3: he was 22 for 33 with the three picks in
- 33:28Speaker 3: the fourth quarter. All the incomplete passes came late.
- 33:31Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 33:31Speaker 1: I just.
- 33:33Speaker 3: I don't think he wants to play that way.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Is Pittsburgh as fast as Seattle on defense?
- 33:39Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 33:40Speaker 2: That was noticeable, how fast they were, how well they
- 33:43Speaker 2: swarmed to the ball, how they filled. How they, you know,
- 33:48Speaker 2: slid on defense.
- 33:49Speaker 6: I'd say more, like, I'm not going to say more
- 33:51Speaker 6: physical than Seattle, but I would just say they're more
- 33:53Speaker 6: on the physical end of things rather than the speed
- 33:56Speaker 6: of things.
- 33:56Speaker 3: I don't think they're as good as Seattle. I mean,
- 33:58Speaker 3: flat out, whatever traits you want to tie to that,
- 34:01Speaker 3: they're not, I don't think it's a scary defense. I
- 34:04Speaker 3: think you can get sloppy and turn the ball over
- 34:06Speaker 3: against them, but I don't, you know, Joey Porter is
- 34:08Speaker 3: by far and away their best cover guy. He's out.
- 34:12Speaker 3: He wants a contract.
- 34:15Speaker 2: So he's hurt.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Yeah, he's milking a back injury, quote-unquote. He's holding in.
- 34:21Speaker 3: So I don't think you're going to see him.
- 34:23Speaker 6: Yeah, sounds like he'd go for a second-round pick maybe
- 34:25Speaker 6: to Detroit with some of the speculation I saw this morning.
- 34:28Speaker 6: So they're dealing with that, their own little Gonzalez situation.
- 34:31Speaker 6: But I just can't forget Josh McDaniels always had a
- 34:34Speaker 6: pretty good beat on this Pittsburgh defense. I was always
- 34:37Speaker 6: shocked to see the 2004 AFC championship game, they come
- 34:41Speaker 6: out and just blow doors, like whatever it was, 40 points.
- 34:45Speaker 6: You know, it just, that always surprises me every time
- 34:47Speaker 6: they've done that to Pittsburgh's defense. For some reason, the
- 34:49Speaker 6: Patriots just always seem to, especially in the games that matter,
- 34:54Speaker 6: they had no problem moving the ball against Pittsburgh, which
- 34:56Speaker 6: is just, I don't quite get it.
- 34:56Speaker 3: This is a little different though. This is a whole,
- 34:58Speaker 3: I mean, these are different guys.
- 35:00Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 35:00Speaker 3: Different players, different coaches.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Ryan Clark's not back there.
- 35:03Speaker 3: They didn't do that last year.
- 35:04Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 35:04Speaker 3: And they scored, you know, 14 points or whatever it was.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:07Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 35:08Speaker 4: But it's the same thing, though. It's the same guys.
- 35:11Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Players, maybe it's the same,
- 35:13Speaker 3: but it's different coaches.
- 35:14Speaker 4: Yeah, but it's the scheme all that much different.
- 35:16Speaker 3: It's Dick LeBeau's not zone blitzing every play.
- 35:18Speaker 2: I know, but.
- 35:18Speaker 3: That's the defense that Charlie Weiss ripped apart in the
- 35:22Speaker 3: AFC Championship.
- 35:23Speaker 4: But the players are the thing that.
- 35:24Speaker 3: Troy Palomaro biting on play actions and whatnot. I don't
- 35:28Speaker 3: think they have that kind of.
- 35:29Speaker 4: No, that's fair.
- 35:30Speaker 3: That's an approach. Now, I don't think it's as good
- 35:33Speaker 3: as those defenses to put one in your column.
- 35:37Speaker 6: No, I mean, I think that's more of a historical commentary.
- 35:40Speaker 6: I've just always been surprised by it, and you're right.
- 35:43Speaker 6: It hasn't really happened. I mean, some of these games
- 35:45Speaker 6: have been crazy.
- 35:45Speaker 2: This was like what the Zappy game was, a Steelers game,
- 35:48Speaker 2: wasn't it?
- 35:49Speaker 3: Yeah, that was kind of low scoring.
- 35:50Speaker 4: That was one.
- 35:51Speaker 2: I mean, there's been some weird ones in the recent past, but.
- 35:55Speaker 6: Yeah, we'll see. They've got to get on track. I
- 35:57Speaker 6: think it's always hard to get that first win. It's
- 35:59Speaker 6: hard to believe in your team until they get that
- 36:02Speaker 6: first win of the season. And then you kind of see,
- 36:04Speaker 6: all right, they've got that ability. I just always feel
- 36:07Speaker 6: like you've got to prove it to me. I'm not
- 36:08Speaker 6: going to just assume anything about a Patriots team I
- 36:11Speaker 6: haven't seen win a game yet. Win a game, how
- 36:13Speaker 6: do you do it? What's the formula going to be
- 36:15Speaker 6: like for you? And then we can start to roll
- 36:17Speaker 6: and figure out how to keep those things going.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Yeah. You mentioned Gilliam. We need to see more from him.
- 36:23Speaker 2: I mean, you brought in a fullback. You've got a
- 36:26Speaker 2: roster spot for a true fullback now. Let's go. I
- 36:31Speaker 2: did hear somebody say that Stevenson necessarily wasn't following him correctly.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Stevenson said some of that himself.
- 36:39Speaker 6: I think Stevenson kind of said there were a couple
- 36:41Speaker 6: of runs he felt he didn't really go the right direction.
- 36:44Speaker 2: I don't know if that was directly connected to the fullback, but.
- 36:48Speaker 6: I need to see more out of everybody. I mean,
- 36:50Speaker 6: all the blocking, it just felt like at best you're
- 36:52Speaker 6: getting stalemates. And then you watch some of these other games,
- 36:55Speaker 6: and it's like, boom, guys are getting blown off the line.
- 36:57Speaker 2: There's all kinds of seams. That's how you have a
- 37:00Speaker 2: running game. The running back is not being contacted until
- 37:04Speaker 2: a yard or two past the line of scrimmage. Whereas,
- 37:07Speaker 2: like you said, contact is early here. And we've got
- 37:12Speaker 2: to change that.
- 37:12Speaker 6: I think I was watching the San Fran Rams game.
- 37:16Speaker 6: And I know Rams didn't have a great game on offense,
- 37:18Speaker 6: but I think early on they had some, they had
- 37:19Speaker 6: some success in the run game. And, you know, and
- 37:21Speaker 6: they were talking about the running backs and I'm like,
- 37:24Speaker 6: screw the running backs. Look at the offensive line. Like,
- 37:26Speaker 6: I mean, this is, these guys are getting the ball.
- 37:27Speaker 6: They're three yards downfield before they, they touch the ball.
- 37:30Speaker 6: So it's, it's easy to praise the running backs, but
- 37:32Speaker 6: it's the whole operation. And that's, you know, something I'm
- 37:34Speaker 6: looking for this week for this team Patriots to get
- 37:37Speaker 6: better at working in sync, you know, getting off those blocks,
- 37:40Speaker 6: getting to the second level and being able to have.
- 37:42Speaker 4: Some explosive runs.
- 37:43Speaker 6: Cause you know, real quick, I know Evan said it's
- 37:44Speaker 6: been a while, uh, since the Patriots have had a
- 37:46Speaker 6: good run game, I went and just looked back at
- 37:49Speaker 6: the recent DVOA from the last few years. So you
- 37:52Speaker 6: got to go back to 2021 was the last time
- 37:54Speaker 6: they were seventh in rushing DVOA.
- 37:57Speaker 2: The last five years or the last four years, it's
- 37:59Speaker 2: been 21, 21, 32, 21. So they've been bottom third
- 38:04Speaker 2: of the league. And to me, that's all because of
- 38:06Speaker 2: the offensive line. It's a huge part of it. I mean,
- 38:09Speaker 2: think about the turmoil that line has gone through, you know,
- 38:13Speaker 2: even back, you know, 24 and the couple of years
- 38:17Speaker 2: before that. I mean, can I say something though, too?
- 38:20Speaker 2: I can't help, but think this out.
- 38:21Speaker 6: And I mean, we were talking with Troy and he
- 38:23Speaker 6: loves Ramond Ray, but at a certain point you got
- 38:26Speaker 6: to say like, maybe, you know, maybe some of it's
- 38:28Speaker 6: him too.
- 38:28Speaker 4: You know, it's like, I don't know.
- 38:29Speaker 3: Wasn't he one of those running backs in 21 when
- 38:31Speaker 3: you had the seventh best?
- 38:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:33Speaker 6: Him and Damien Harris, Damien Harris, the guy, you know,
- 38:36Speaker 6: different results now five.
- 38:38Speaker 4: Years ago though, at this point. So I don't know.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Does he still, is he still got it? I still
- 38:43Speaker 2: say that. The fumbles are always going to be in
- 38:47Speaker 2: his head, and I think it has affected his style.
- 38:50Speaker 3: I don't see that. I know that.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Really?
- 38:53Speaker 3: I don't see. I just see guys in the backfield
- 38:55Speaker 3: hitting running backs, regardless of who it was. It was
- 38:57Speaker 3: the same with the other kid, Kiner. I mean, six
- 39:00Speaker 3: carries for 11 yards. That's not because the kid doesn't
- 39:03Speaker 3: know how to run. I mean, he's just getting killed.
- 39:07Speaker 3: Every time he gets the ball, there's a guy in
- 39:09Speaker 3: the hole to meet him. You're forced to make a
- 39:12Speaker 3: guy miss as soon as you get the ball. You know,
- 39:15Speaker 3: Henderson last year, Henderson averaged five yards a carry last year.
- 39:21Speaker 3: He had four touchdowns of over 50 yards.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 39:24Speaker 3: And I know that you might look at that and say, well,
- 39:26Speaker 3: five yards a carry, that's a really good, it is
- 39:27Speaker 3: a really good average.
- 39:28Speaker 2: It's huge.
- 39:30Speaker 3: And think about all of those huge runs that he had.
- 39:34Speaker 3: it becomes a little less impressive. In other words, what
- 39:36Speaker 3: I'm trying to say is Henderson has the same problems
- 39:38Speaker 3: that Stevenson and Kiner were having the other night. He's
- 39:41Speaker 3: getting met in the backfield too often, and I don't
- 39:44Speaker 3: care who you are. To Mike's point, Blake Corham and
- 39:47Speaker 3: Kyron Williams can look like great running backs when the Rams'
- 39:51Speaker 3: offensive line is blowing holes open for them. And, you know,
- 39:54Speaker 3: when it's second and third and one in the first half,
- 39:57Speaker 3: what little part of that Rams game I saw, they
- 40:00Speaker 3: were getting stuffed because... The opposite was true, and I
- 40:04Speaker 3: think the Patriots' offensive line, I don't think, played as
- 40:09Speaker 3: well as virtually everybody else thinks that they played the
- 40:12Speaker 3: other night. I think they were overmatched in the run game,
- 40:16Speaker 3: and they didn't blitz as much, so the pass protection,
- 40:20Speaker 3: I thought, looked a little better. There weren't those guys
- 40:22Speaker 3: just running free like in the Super Bowl, so it
- 40:24Speaker 3: looked like, aesthetically, it looked better. I think they were,
- 40:29Speaker 3: I thought, poor in the run game, average in the
- 40:31Speaker 3: pass protection.
- 40:32Speaker 1: I mean.
- 40:33Speaker 6: If you buy DVOA, they were the worst team in
- 40:35Speaker 6: the league last weekend at running the ball.
- 40:37Speaker 3: I mean, again, you know I don't follow any of
- 40:40Speaker 3: this stuff. I don't go and watch all the stuff,
- 40:43Speaker 3: all these breakdowns.
- 40:44Speaker 2: Well, who was the best?
- 40:45Speaker 3: Somebody has to tell me that the fullback was actually
- 40:47Speaker 3: doing a good job. I don't care about it. All
- 40:49Speaker 3: I'm telling you is when we handed the ball off,
- 40:52Speaker 3: there were Seattle guys there to greet them almost every
- 40:55Speaker 3: run play. Except for what I said, the last drive
- 40:59Speaker 3: when the other team is playing all pass because it's
- 41:01Speaker 3: a two-minute drill and the other team's got to get
- 41:03Speaker 3: on the field and you pop two runs in there
- 41:06Speaker 3: and that's what we're hanging our hat on. That's what
- 41:07Speaker 3: Mike Vrabel's hanging his hat on. I think he's trying
- 41:10Speaker 3: to defend his game plan is what he's trying to do.
- 41:13Speaker 3: He's saying that we leaned on him and leaned on
- 41:17Speaker 3: him and leaned on him and it paid dividends at
- 41:18Speaker 3: the end.
- 41:18Speaker 2: I have to look at the play chart, but I
- 41:21Speaker 2: get the sense that the running game was a little...
- 41:23Speaker 2: looked better in the second half, not just that last drive.
- 41:29Speaker 8: Didn't.
- 41:31Speaker 2: I'm just from what I saw.
- 41:32Speaker 3: The numbers would say it didn't.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm telling you, from what I saw, it
- 41:36Speaker 2: looked better. It looked better. Like, they weren't getting hit
- 41:39Speaker 2: in the backfield.
- 41:39Speaker 3: If you take out May's scrambles in the 8- and
- 41:42Speaker 3: 10-yard run that Stevenson had in the last drive, nothing.
- 41:45Speaker 3: It's got to be better.
- 41:46Speaker 2: It's got to be better.
- 41:47Speaker 6: I mean, I just think they're dead in the water
- 41:48Speaker 6: if they can't get a run game going. And teams
- 41:51Speaker 6: are just going to continue to do to Drake what
- 41:52Speaker 6: they've been doing And unless he suddenly takes a leap
- 41:55Speaker 6: where he's recognizing coverage and it doesn't matter and he's
- 41:58Speaker 6: just picking teams apart again, which could happen. But I
- 42:01Speaker 6: just think the easiest route is run the ball, have
- 42:04Speaker 6: some success, put the pressure on the front seven.
- 42:06Speaker 2: They got to put guys in the box. And now
- 42:08Speaker 2: it's time for Drake to do what he does best.
- 42:11Speaker 2: So I'm going to go back to last week for
- 42:14Speaker 2: one second just to set up something for this week.
- 42:18Speaker 3: If A.J.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Brown doesn't go down, do they win that game? Everything
- 42:22Speaker 2: else stays the same.
- 42:23Speaker 8: Sure.
- 42:26Speaker 2: In other words, could he be that much of a
- 42:29Speaker 2: difference maker for the offense?
- 42:29Speaker 3: How do you say everybody else is the same? So
- 42:31Speaker 3: they didn't throw the three picks?
- 42:33Speaker 2: No, no. Well, no. He wouldn't have thrown three picks.
- 42:36Speaker 2: I'm talking about.
- 42:38Speaker 3: It's hard to make the argument that Seattle still wins
- 42:41Speaker 3: the game if he doesn't throw three picks.
- 42:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:43Speaker 3: I think the three picks were... Or vital.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Right. But if A.J. Brown is in the game, does
- 42:50Speaker 2: he throw those picks?
- 42:51Speaker 3: I don't think there's any way of knowing. Does he
- 42:53Speaker 3: still get impatient?
- 42:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:54Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 42:55Speaker 2: But obviously, I guess what I'm coming to is A.J.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Brown changes, in my mind, or at least should, change
- 43:04Speaker 2: the trajectory of the way that game went.
- 43:07Speaker 3: So what I don't know is, did A.J. Brown's injury
- 43:11Speaker 3: mentally cause Drake May... to get impatient. His word, not mine.
- 43:17Speaker 3: He said he got impatient. So if, if AJ Brown
- 43:20Speaker 3: is still there, is he more willing to, for four
- 43:23Speaker 3: full quarters instead of three full quarters to stay patient?
- 43:27Speaker 3: I don't think there's any way of knowing that because
- 43:29Speaker 3: they didn't do anything offensively with AJ Brown. No, but
- 43:32Speaker 3: I think, but maybe he doesn't throw the three picks
- 43:34Speaker 3: because he keeps taking what they get.
- 43:36Speaker 2: I think the result of, uh, and the trickle down
- 43:39Speaker 2: effect of his injury did contribute to, uh, May getting
- 43:45Speaker 2: him paid.
- 43:45Speaker 3: There's an argument for that. I think there's a very
- 43:48Speaker 3: logical line you can draw to the injury and his
- 43:52Speaker 3: decision to get him paid.
- 43:54Speaker 2: So I know it's all pie in the sky and speculation,
- 43:57Speaker 2: but I agree. I think they win the game with A.J.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Brown playing last week. But now he's not here. He's
- 44:04Speaker 2: not on the team for this week.
- 44:06Speaker 3: Does Seattle win the game if Sam Darnold doesn't get injured?
- 44:09Speaker 12: No.
- 44:10Speaker 2: And I'll tell you why.
- 44:12Speaker 3: Don't ever change. That was the perfect answer.
- 44:14Speaker 2: I'll tell you why. The perfect answer. I didn't go
- 44:16Speaker 2: into last week's game worried about Seattle's offense.
- 44:18Speaker 3: But it doesn't matter what you were worried about.
- 44:20Speaker 2: I know.
- 44:21Speaker 3: But do you think they would have scored more than
- 44:22Speaker 3: 13 points if they had their quarterback?
- 44:24Speaker 2: Not necessarily. I do. You know, because Sam Darnold did
- 44:27Speaker 2: not necessarily play that well in the Super Bowl. He
- 44:29Speaker 2: didn't lose.
- 44:30Speaker 3: He played terribly in the Super Bowl. I don't think
- 44:32Speaker 3: he would have played terribly again.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Okay. We didn't lose, though, the Super Bowl because of
- 44:36Speaker 2: Sam Darnold. And I don't think we would have lost
- 44:39Speaker 2: last week because of Sam Darnold. We would have lost,
- 44:43Speaker 2: and we did lose, because our offense couldn't score enough
- 44:47Speaker 2: points against their defense.
- 44:48Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that that was the case even
- 44:51Speaker 3: when A.J. Brown was playing. And you were halfway through
- 44:54Speaker 3: the third quarter with seven points.
- 44:55Speaker 2: And I think that would have been the case as
- 44:57Speaker 2: well if Sam Darnall was in the game. He's not
- 45:00Speaker 2: the difference maker on that team.
- 45:02Speaker 3: He would have scored more than 13 points.
- 45:04Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 45:05Speaker 12: Maybe.
- 45:06Speaker 2: Maybe we intercept him early and he's seeing ghosts again.
- 45:10Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 45:13Speaker 3: I just love how he can extrapolate positively. Without even
- 45:17Speaker 3: an eyelash.
- 45:18Speaker 2: That's ridiculous.
- 45:19Speaker 3: A batting of the eyelash.
- 45:20Speaker 2: And the reason why is because I've thought about this.
- 45:24Speaker 2: How much of a difference did losing Sam Darnold make
- 45:27Speaker 2: to the outcome of that game? And I don't think
- 45:29Speaker 2: as much.
- 45:30Speaker 3: I just don't know how you can say that.
- 45:31Speaker 2: Because I don't think he's that great. He plays five plays.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Not as much as.
- 45:35Speaker 3: But he is great for them. Like what you think
- 45:38Speaker 3: of him is irrelevant. He threw for over 4,000 yards
- 45:41Speaker 3: last year and was like in the top five in passing.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Easy schedule. No, I'm only kidding.
- 45:47Speaker 3: Yeah, those two games against the Rams and the Niners,
- 45:50Speaker 3: those were easy.
- 45:51Speaker 2: But I don't think them losing Darnold added up to
- 45:56Speaker 2: the same as us losing A.J. Brown.
- 45:58Speaker 3: I think that's insane. The other team lost their quarterback,
- 46:02Speaker 3: and he thinks losing a wide receiver in the second
- 46:05Speaker 3: half was more important.
- 46:07Speaker 2: They don't win games because of Sam Darnold. We win
- 46:09Speaker 2: games because of Drake May.
- 46:13Speaker 3: What does that have to do with A.J.
- 46:14Speaker 2: Brown? Because if Drake May's not playing well, we don't win.
- 46:19Speaker 3: If you win games because of Drake May, then you're
- 46:23Speaker 3: in trouble because you lost one because of him.
- 46:26Speaker 2: I agree.
- 46:27Speaker 3: And it shouldn't have had that much to do with
- 46:29Speaker 3: one wide receiver leaving the game. If you win games
- 46:32Speaker 3: because of that.
- 46:32Speaker 2: I think in week one, I think losing your number
- 46:34Speaker 2: one receiver that's supposed to open up the offense for
- 46:36Speaker 2: everybody else makes a big difference.
- 46:38Speaker 3: I mean, the defense lost one of their best players
- 46:40Speaker 3: and played without him the whole game. It didn't cause
- 46:42Speaker 3: their defense to fall apart.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Defense is different than offense.
- 46:46Speaker 3: You have like a counter for everything.
- 46:48Speaker 2: It is.
- 46:48Speaker 3: It's true. I'm just trying to point out, it doesn't
- 46:51Speaker 3: really matter what we thought going in.
- 46:53Speaker 5: Okay.
- 46:54Speaker 1: Like.
- 46:55Speaker 3: I thought the Patriots were going to score 30 points
- 46:58Speaker 3: or threatened to score 30 points in that game. That's
- 47:01Speaker 3: what I thought going in. I couldn't have been more wrong.
- 47:04Speaker 3: I thought the Patriots were going to have this electric offense.
- 47:07Speaker 3: Before A.J. Brown got hurt, they were anything but electric.
- 47:12Speaker 3: The only difference between before he got hurt and after
- 47:16Speaker 3: he got hurt was Drake made through three picks in
- 47:18Speaker 3: the fourth quarter.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:19Speaker 3: So you want to say that they would have won
- 47:21Speaker 3: the game? I would agree with you. I think they
- 47:23Speaker 3: would have won the game because I don't think he
- 47:24Speaker 3: would have thrown three picks if A.J. Brown was still
- 47:27Speaker 3: in the game.
- 47:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 47:28Speaker 3: I don't think they would have scored any more than
- 47:29Speaker 3: 10 points. Because I watched the game, and they weren't
- 47:33Speaker 3: moving it with him or without him.
- 47:34Speaker 2: It took a little while. They were starting to get
- 47:36Speaker 2: some momentum. They had the slant a couple times.
- 47:40Speaker 3: I didn't say that A.J. Brown did anything wrong. The
- 47:42Speaker 3: offense wasn't moving the ball.
- 47:44Speaker 1: No, no.
- 47:44Speaker 2: I think with A.J.
- 47:45Speaker 6: Brown, Patriots offense would have been better. I think they
- 47:48Speaker 6: would have been better. I don't know how to agree.
- 47:50Speaker 6: With Sam Darnold, I think it could have gone either way.
- 47:53Speaker 2: That's right.
- 47:53Speaker 1: It could have gone.
- 47:54Speaker 6: 20 turnover Sam Darnold, and he gives you a couple
- 47:57Speaker 6: to change it, or you get 4,000 yards Sam Darnold.
- 47:59Speaker 4: Which one do you get?
- 48:01Speaker 3: The one who played the majority of the last two seasons,
- 48:03Speaker 3: I think you would have gotten. That's what I think.
- 48:07Speaker 3: I'm going to base it on the logic.
- 48:08Speaker 2: By the way, how's he doing? What's his prognosis?
- 48:10Speaker 3: He's out this week.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Oh, he's not on IR or anything?
- 48:14Speaker 3: Not on IR yet. They're hopeful for week three.
- 48:16Speaker 4: The buttock?
- 48:17Speaker 2: Okay. He hurt his buttock? I think it's the buttock. Okay.
- 48:21Speaker 4: It wasn't the hip.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Very unique soft tissue right glute tendon injury. Very unique.
- 48:27Speaker 3: That's what the Patriots do, Fred. They hurt guys in
- 48:30Speaker 3: unique ways.
- 48:31Speaker 2: That's right. So the only thing I'm concerned about going
- 48:41Speaker 2: into this game is establishing the pass.
- 48:45Speaker 3: I think that's the most important thing. is to come
- 48:48Speaker 3: out of this game feeling much better about the passing game,
- 48:50Speaker 3: and specifically Romeo Dobbs.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:53Speaker 2: And, of course, Drake May.
- 48:54Speaker 3: I don't worry about Drake May.
- 48:56Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 48:57Speaker 2: I think he'll shake it off.
- 48:58Speaker 3: I haven't seen Romeo Dobbs do anything as a Patriot yet.
- 49:00Speaker 7: Right.
- 49:01Speaker 3: So I have a little uncertainty there. I don't have
- 49:03Speaker 3: uncertainty about Drake May.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Okay.
- 49:05Speaker 3: I don't think I'm wrong on Drake May.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Maybe it's just Dobbs' thing.
- 49:07Speaker 3: I think he's good.
- 49:08Speaker 6: Like, Dobbs, he had a slow start to camp. Then
- 49:10Speaker 6: he's like, all right, I've got to have my slow start,
- 49:11Speaker 6: and then he'll get going. So maybe that's just his style.
- 49:14Speaker 3: We've seen this with players. You bring in players with
- 49:18Speaker 3: track records who come, and sometimes Chad Ochoacinco doesn't look
- 49:21Speaker 3: like Chad Ochoacinco with the Patriots.
- 49:24Speaker 2: You know? Yeah, Johnny Smith.
- 49:26Speaker 3: There's a little uncertainty. There's a little uncertainty with what
- 49:30Speaker 3: you're going to get from Romeo Dobbs. I don't have
- 49:32Speaker 3: that with Drake May. I feel like I have enough
- 49:34Speaker 3: of a track record with Drake May that I think
- 49:36Speaker 3: he's a good player, and I'm confident that he will
- 49:38Speaker 3: play better This week than he did last week.
- 49:41Speaker 2: But do you think he, I mean, do you feel
- 49:43Speaker 2: that confident that he is a perennial MVP contender?
- 49:46Speaker 1: No.
- 49:47Speaker 2: Drake May?
- 49:48Speaker 3: You've got to do that for a while before I
- 49:50Speaker 3: call you back.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Yeah. All right. 855-PASS-500 is the hotline. Podcasts at Patriots.com
- 49:58Speaker 2: is the email address. Let's start with Eldred in North Carolina.
- 50:03Speaker 2: What's up, Eldred? Eldred.
- 50:08Speaker 17: Hey.
- 50:08Speaker 13: Hey.
- 50:10Speaker 15: Hey, fellas.
- 50:11Speaker 2: How y'all?
- 50:12Speaker 1: Good.
- 50:12Speaker 14: Paul, you and Fred cracked me up. I love both
- 50:15Speaker 14: of y'all.
- 50:15Speaker 1: I know.
- 50:16Speaker 14: But, Paul, I got to agree with you, man. It's
- 50:20Speaker 14: that line, bro. Every time I looked up, Stevenson and Kleiner,
- 50:24Speaker 14: and even last year in Super Bowl, they was getting
- 50:26Speaker 14: hit before they even got the ball. So, it's that line.
- 50:29Speaker 14: Most of the time, that's why the running game looks bad.
- 50:31Speaker 14: But my question is this. I'm going to ask y'all.
- 50:33Speaker 14: I'm going to take it off the air. Paul said
- 50:36Speaker 14: he's not worried about Drake May.
- 50:38Speaker 2: I am.
- 50:40Speaker 14: Because now he could be concentrating on the tight end
- 50:45Speaker 14: and hollering. You got four other guys out there. You
- 50:48Speaker 14: got to feel comfortable throwing to him now because the
- 50:50Speaker 14: main gun is gone. It's down. You know, because you
- 50:54Speaker 14: gave him a hospital ball. That's the way I look
- 50:56Speaker 14: at it. But I'm just wondering, do you think during
- 51:01Speaker 14: this week or so, do you feel good enough to
- 51:03Speaker 14: throw to Dr. Pop or Williams or even Chisholm? And
- 51:09Speaker 14: I'll take it off the air.
- 51:10Speaker 8: Thanks.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you have to.
- 51:11Speaker 3: I don't know about Williams or Chisholm. He's already shown
- 51:14Speaker 3: me that he's plenty comfortable throwing at Douglas. I think
- 51:16Speaker 3: Douglas had five catches the other day.
- 51:18Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 51:18Speaker 3: In a game that they really didn't move the ball
- 51:21Speaker 3: on offense. So, you know, him and Holland, he's not
- 51:24Speaker 3: going to be, I don't think he's going to be,
- 51:27Speaker 3: you know, a 10-12 catch guy. Like, you know, the
- 51:30Speaker 3: Edelman and Welker kind of heyday, but. I think Douglas
- 51:34Speaker 3: is fine in the offense. They've got to find roles
- 51:36Speaker 3: for the other guys. Does Hollins just fit into the X?
- 51:40Speaker 3: Does he just take over A.J. Brown's stuff? Does Chisholm,
- 51:43Speaker 3: to Mike's point... become an Amendola type that can move
- 51:48Speaker 3: the chains. I don't have the same kind of feeling.
- 51:51Speaker 3: I don't see the unique quality. I don't see anything
- 51:54Speaker 3: unique about that. But maybe he does.
- 51:56Speaker 2: Maybe I'm wrong. I think May has to distribute.
- 51:59Speaker 3: And maybe Kyle Williams can get down the field for
- 52:02Speaker 3: a play, but I'm not looking for him for volume.
- 52:04Speaker 3: It's Romeo Dawes. He needs to be the guy.
- 52:07Speaker 2: So for what we envision Chisholm could do, is that
- 52:11Speaker 2: adding pages to the playbook that don't exist right now? Who? Chisholm.
- 52:16Speaker 8: No.
- 52:17Speaker 13: No?
- 52:17Speaker 2: You think that they have plays for that type of
- 52:20Speaker 2: player right now?
- 52:20Speaker 3: I think he's Amendola.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:22Speaker 2: Yeah, but Amendola's not on the team.
- 52:24Speaker 3: No, but that's the... It's the same plays. Like, Josh McDaniels.
- 52:28Speaker 2: But are those plays in this playbook?
- 52:32Speaker 3: Do you understand what I'm saying?
- 52:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:34Speaker 3: The playbook is the same playbook that they ran with... Now,
- 52:38Speaker 3: you might say that.
- 52:38Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 52:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:41Speaker 3: You don't see similar concepts to what they do on offense?
- 52:43Speaker 2: Sure, but you take pages out, you put pages in.
- 52:46Speaker 3: You accentuate things that you think the quarterback is more
- 52:49Speaker 3: comfortable with. Maybe Brady was more comfortable throwing everything underneath
- 52:52Speaker 3: than May. Matter of fact, I would say, unquestionably, Brady was.
- 52:56Speaker 2: More comfortable with that. I guess what I'm getting at
- 52:58Speaker 2: is Chisholm has specific skills, let's say. And are those
- 53:04Speaker 2: things that they've been working on in the offseason?
- 53:07Speaker 8: Yeah. Yeah.
- 53:07Speaker 6: I mean, I think you still see guys like, let's
- 53:09Speaker 6: just say whip routes, you know, the little route where
- 53:11Speaker 6: you come in the inside, you drop your hips and
- 53:13Speaker 6: you go back.
- 53:13Speaker 3: I've seen those a million times in training camp. Now,
- 53:15Speaker 3: May doesn't throw them to Chisholm, but DeVito did.
- 53:18Speaker 2: I know.
- 53:19Speaker 8: Right.
- 53:19Speaker 2: And I mean, he threw them to Diggs. I mean,
- 53:21Speaker 2: Diggs would run those routes, but I just don't.
- 53:23Speaker 6: I mean, Hollins is too tall to really sink and
- 53:25Speaker 6: really make that an effective route. It's not really Dobbs' thing.
- 53:28Speaker 6: He's a big guy, too. Pop is not really. So
- 53:30Speaker 6: that's where I'm kind of living.
- 53:32Speaker 3: I think Douglas caught a million of those.
- 53:34Speaker 2: So I'm just thinking, in order for Chisholm to be effective,
- 53:37Speaker 2: how much do they have to work on that this
- 53:39Speaker 2: week in practice?
- 53:42Speaker 6: Well, not at the expense of the general plan. I mean,
- 53:45Speaker 6: I wouldn't sit there and be like, we've got to
- 53:46Speaker 6: get Chisholm going this week to get things going.
- 53:48Speaker 3: We've got to get Romeo Dobbs going. That's the priority.
- 53:54Speaker 3: If he is a miss, which is going to surprise
- 53:57Speaker 3: me because I don't think he's a miss, I think
- 53:59Speaker 3: he's going to be fine. As I said yesterday on
- 54:02Speaker 3: the Legal Seafood's Fresh Take of the Day. I'll reiterate,
- 54:06Speaker 3: I am a little small-c concerned, but I'm not panicking
- 54:10Speaker 3: over what I saw in one game.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Was your Fresh Talk take fishy?
- 54:14Speaker 14: No.
- 54:15Speaker 4: It smelled a little fishy.
- 54:17Speaker 3: Okay. But Romeo Dobbs needs to be the guy that
- 54:19Speaker 3: you went out and paid $ 68 million.
- 54:21Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 54:22Speaker 3: I mean, up until the point, what are we talking about?
- 54:24Speaker 3: Like an undrafted, you know, guy who's never really played
- 54:27Speaker 3: is going to come in and transform the offense. You're
- 54:29Speaker 3: kind of in trouble if that's what you're relying on.
- 54:31Speaker 2: Think about it up until the point they finally did
- 54:33Speaker 2: sign AJ Brown. He was the big off season. Yeah.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Get right.
- 54:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 54:38Speaker 3: So if you can get, if you can get Dobbs
- 54:41Speaker 3: and Hollins going, maybe make a big player to, to Douglas,
- 54:45Speaker 3: you know, Now I can see Chisholm, you know, squirting
- 54:49Speaker 3: in and getting a first down, getting some yards after
- 54:52Speaker 3: the catch, because one thing that I do like about
- 54:54Speaker 3: him is I do think he has a physical... He's
- 54:57Speaker 3: a little thicker than some of those... I think he can...
- 55:01Speaker 3: I think he can break tackles. I don't think he's
- 55:04Speaker 3: very fast. But I think he plays with, as Rabel
- 55:08Speaker 3: likes to say, good play strength. Did I use that right, Mike?
- 55:10Speaker 2: I think so.
- 55:11Speaker 3: Good play strength. Yeah, I think Chisholm can bring some
- 55:14Speaker 3: of that to the table. But I'm not expecting him
- 55:16Speaker 3: to just come in and lift the offense to higher ground.
- 55:19Speaker 3: I don't think that's fair to Efton Chisholm.
- 55:22Speaker 1: No.
- 55:23Speaker 3: Do you?
- 55:24Speaker 2: Well, I don't think it's fair to expect that.
- 55:27Speaker 3: That's what I just said. I'm not expecting him to
- 55:29Speaker 3: lift the offense to higher ground. I don't think that's fair.
- 55:32Speaker 2: But could he?
- 55:34Speaker 13: No.
- 55:34Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 55:36Speaker 7: No.
- 55:37Speaker 2: I just think those guys have to.
- 55:38Speaker 3: Drake May has to lift the offense to higher ground.
- 55:40Speaker 3: That's what I'm expecting.
- 55:41Speaker 2: I think if he can establish himself as that little
- 55:46Speaker 2: binky when all else fails.
- 55:48Speaker 3: I'm going to guarantee we're going to waste 45 minutes
- 55:51Speaker 3: on the postgame show Sunday night with Fred.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Blind love the donut down because Chisholm is going.
- 55:57Speaker 3: To catch four balls for like 50 yards. And he's
- 55:59Speaker 3: going to tell me that you said he couldn't lift
- 56:01Speaker 3: the offense, the higher ground. I'm going to say, and
- 56:03Speaker 3: he didn't. And we're going to go on for 45 minutes.
- 56:05Speaker 2: If it's just not just running on a loop, Matt,
- 56:08Speaker 2: if it's nondescript for, for 50, but if every one
- 56:10Speaker 2: of those are for first downs, then I'll buy you.
- 56:14Speaker 3: And I want to see like, well, what did Dobbs
- 56:17Speaker 3: do to get him open? What did Hollins do? How
- 56:19Speaker 3: many touchdowns that Hunter Henry have to Drake may throw
- 56:22Speaker 3: for three 40. And, like, you know, this guy caught
- 56:26Speaker 3: a couple of passes. And I'm just telling you right now,
- 56:29Speaker 3: we're arguing the hypothetical. I guarantee that when it happens,
- 56:34Speaker 3: we're going to argue about it.
- 56:35Speaker 2: I will wait to see what the effect of those
- 56:38Speaker 2: catches were on the game.
- 56:40Speaker 3: And you'll claim that it was a greater effect than
- 56:43Speaker 3: I will.
- 56:43Speaker 1: Okay, we'll see.
- 56:44Speaker 2: You can book it. We'll see.
- 56:45Speaker 4: I'm excited to hear it.
- 56:47Speaker 2: No, you're not.
- 56:48Speaker 3: You're already rolling your eyes.
- 56:50Speaker 2: We'll see. We'll see what Troy Brown says because he
- 56:53Speaker 2: was a slot receiver. Oh, okay.
- 56:56Speaker 3: This is right where I figured we'd be.
- 56:59Speaker 4: I just, I have a little bit of concern about Dobs.
- 57:01Speaker 2: Asking the person who actually played the game? Okay.
- 57:04Speaker 3: No one else's opinion matters.
- 57:06Speaker 2: No value in that.
- 57:06Speaker 3: No one else's opinion matters.
- 57:07Speaker 2: There's no value in that, I guess.
- 57:09Speaker 3: Very little.
- 57:12Speaker 2: I'm just, I'm stuck on Dobs. I just, I agree
- 57:14Speaker 2: with Paul.
- 57:15Speaker 6: I think he's got the skill set to play and
- 57:17Speaker 6: to be a productive NFL player, but The look on
- 57:20Speaker 6: his face in that game, it just concerned me. And
- 57:23Speaker 6: I know how football games go and seasons go, that
- 57:26Speaker 6: there are ups and downs. And if we're saying that
- 57:28Speaker 6: Romeo Dobbs has to be the come hell or high water,
- 57:31Speaker 6: this is my guy and we're going to fight through
- 57:33Speaker 6: this together.
- 57:33Speaker 2: And when we have to have it, he's going to
- 57:34Speaker 2: be the guy that I count on.
- 57:36Speaker 6: It's a pretty big leap for me right now to
- 57:38Speaker 6: see him becoming that trusted guy from the guy on
- 57:41Speaker 6: the sideline that looked like he was in his own.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Feels about it. We all know what that looks like.
- 57:46Speaker 6: I spend way too much time watching youth sports where
- 57:49Speaker 6: you can tell the kids that the second they strike out,
- 57:52Speaker 6: it's like, yeah, they're not coming.
- 57:53Speaker 2: They're an emotional meltdown.
- 57:55Speaker 6: And I don't know that that's necessarily him. I just
- 57:58Speaker 6: am looking at it, and I don't even care about
- 57:59Speaker 6: the drop all that much. It's more the reaction to
- 58:01Speaker 6: the drop and knowing– that these games are all back
- 58:04Speaker 6: and forth wars, especially when you get down to the
- 58:07Speaker 6: good teams and you need guys that can ride the
- 58:09Speaker 6: highs and lows and, you know, fight through that stuff.
- 58:11Speaker 6: So I hope he's able to, to move on from
- 58:13Speaker 6: this and start to develop that chemistry and earn some trust.
- 58:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:16Speaker 3: And, and I, again, I'm not expecting it all of
- 58:19Speaker 3: a sudden to just click where all that stuff you're
- 58:21Speaker 3: talking about. My guess is it's going to be Hunter
- 58:24Speaker 3: Henry and Mac, Mac Collins.
- 58:26Speaker 2: Let's go to Mike for able.
- 58:29Speaker 3: I forgot about it.
- 58:29Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 58:32Speaker 7: Um, line between as you say getting bored doing the
- 58:39Speaker 7: right thing but also like not wanting to have him
- 58:43Speaker 7: gun shy about you know going for a big play
- 58:46Speaker 7: if it's there.
- 58:49Speaker 1: Of course not I mean that's what playing quarterback or
- 58:52Speaker 1: playing in this league is all about is about our
- 58:56Speaker 1: players having the knowledge and the skill and you know
- 59:00Speaker 1: the repetitions to make great split second decisions and I
- 59:06Speaker 1: think that there's a difference between, we've said this, being
- 59:09Speaker 1: reckless and being aggressive. We want to be aggressive. That's
- 59:11Speaker 1: how we want to play. But we also have to
- 59:15Speaker 1: make great decisions when there's a look or something that
- 59:21Speaker 1: maybe would take a certain play away.
- 59:25Speaker 8: As a coach, the line of.
- 59:30Speaker 12: When to talk to a player and have the conversations
- 59:34Speaker 12: of what you think.
- 59:36Speaker 2: How final line is that?
- 59:37Speaker 8: Do you do it over the course of the week?
- 59:39Speaker 2: Do you step into a meeting?
- 59:40Speaker 12: Do individual, a guy like Drake, what kind of things
- 59:43Speaker 12: do you, now that you know him a little bit more,
- 59:45Speaker 12: is it easier to say what you want to say?
- 59:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I always, I mean, I feel like
- 59:50Speaker 1: I have good conversations with our players and with our staff.
- 59:53Speaker 1: And I don't think that there's like a set time.
- 59:55Speaker 1: It's usually whether it's in a team meeting and it's
- 59:58Speaker 1: a coaching point or Going into the quarterback room, you're
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: asking about Drake specifically, going to the quarterback room, but
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: I try to spend a lot of time in as
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: many meetings as I can and talk to the players
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: and also see what their thoughts are and how they
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: see the coming opponent or the things that we have in.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: One practice, but I do feel like Drake just responded
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: the early part of this week coming off that game.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: I would say that practice is going to be critical,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: but obviously our performance and everybody's performance on Sunday is
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: going to be what matters the most. So, you know,
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: we felt like we had good energy and we got
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: off to a good start. And, you know, we'll have
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: to just continue to build here throughout the week.
- 1:00:45Speaker 18: How difficult is it to fool a player like Aaron
- 1:00:48Speaker 18: Rodgers to confuse him at the line of scrimmage?
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: Well, probably it's difficult. And I think that you can
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: start to, you know, the– the risk out benefits, you
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: know what I mean? The way is the benefits where
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: you're trying to disguise and show one thing or show
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: a coverage and, you know, but ultimately you're out of position. Um,
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: you know, so again, he's seen every look that you
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: could possibly give him. I think it's, uh, he tries
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: to get him in the best possible play. Uh, he
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: tries to put the ball where, where he feels like
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: his best, uh, and does a great job with it.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: You saw some of the, the throws he had last
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: week that, that were, um, you know, in tight windows
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: and tight spots. So, again, I think we have to
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: be good. I mean, he uses his cadence even on
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: the road, and that's how good it is. Got us
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: on the first play of the game last year. So
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: all those things we'll have to do is be ready
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: to go on a quick count, and whether he takes
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: the play clock down, those are things that you have
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: to be able to weigh.
- 1:01:50Speaker 17: How would you describe the identity of a Patrick Graham defense,
- 1:01:53Speaker 17: and how valuable is it that you played both the
- 1:01:54Speaker 17: Raiders when he was their play caller and the Steelers
- 1:01:56Speaker 17: last season?
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: I think the Pittsburgh Steelers is the identity. That's no
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: disrespect to Patrick. I love Patrick. He's an excellent football coach,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: but the Steelers are going to be the Steelers. They're
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: going to be big. They're going to be long. They're
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: going to force the quarterback into trying to make mistakes.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: That's what they do. Some of the things are going
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: to be similar. It's been one week, so we can
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: watch the The snaps they had against Atlanta, we can
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: watch every game that he's ever called, but they're going
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: to be big inside. They're going to be long and
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: active on the edges.
- 1:02:35Speaker 8: You mentioned the aggressiveness you want to see from your
- 1:02:38Speaker 8: players in regard to Drake, but on the defensive side
- 1:02:40Speaker 8: of the ball, what did you see there in the
- 1:02:43Speaker 8: Seattle game, and what do you do to create more turnover?
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: You have to go attack the football. Again, the easiest
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: target is the quarterback, so you have to force the
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: quarterback into mistakes. You have to Hit it out of
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: his hands. We had a couple opportunities where we did
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: hit the quarterback, but again, you've got to knock it
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: out of his hands. Make it a concerted effort. We
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: do it every single day. Finding ways to work together
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: to create ball disruption. That'll never change. But it starts
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: with the quarterback. He's the one that has it the most,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: and he's the one that at the end of the
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: year is going to have, by the numbers I would say,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: the most turnover opportunities.
- 1:03:24Speaker 12: They had a pretty high success rate when you blitzed
- 1:03:26Speaker 12: them last year. What do you just remember about those
- 1:03:29Speaker 12: particular snaps that were broken down?
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: 50-50 ball to Marcus at the end of the game.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: We sent one or eight or nine. It still would
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: have gotten off. We blitzed them one time. They threw
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: it to Warren and we tackled them for five yards. Again,
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: I can go back and look. That's We'll have to
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: be better. Every way that we played them last year,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: pick and choose our spots to pressure. I'm not really
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: sure about what happened last year.
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: How did Trevion respond to practicing on Monday?
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: I think he'll be able to do some more. He'll
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: be able to do some more today. We'll continue to
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: evaluate that and see where he is. Hopefully that continues
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: to trend in the right direction.
- 1:04:22Speaker 19: You have a safety in the box consistently last week.
- 1:04:25Speaker 19: What are you looking for from a safety's perspective to
- 1:04:29Speaker 19: better fit in that role? Is it rotational or certain
- 1:04:32Speaker 19: traits that you're looking for that make one player a
- 1:04:35Speaker 19: better option for that role than the others?
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: So you're talking about the safeties that are down in
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: the box?
- 1:04:42Speaker 6: Down in the box.
- 1:04:43Speaker 8: Okay.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I meant we play multiple coverages. We play split
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: safety looks. We play post safety looks. I think that
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: the biggest thing is just trying to find the versatility
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: that those guys have. They end up having a cover,
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: being able to come in there and tackle and fit
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: on the run game, but also playing a deep part
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: of the field. So I think that there's got to
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: be a level of athleticism playing a deep part of
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: the field. There has to be a level of physicality.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: I think that the communication is key and an understanding
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: of what we're doing from multiple coverages.
- 1:05:21Speaker 18: During the course of the spring and summer, there was
- 1:05:23Speaker 18: a lot of discussion about Drake having maybe some more
- 1:05:25Speaker 18: controls at the line of scrimmage. I think weaponizing the
- 1:05:28Speaker 18: brain was one of the phrases that got kicked around.
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: I don't know if that was us or somebody.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: That couldn't have been me.
- 1:05:31Speaker 8: No, that wasn't me.
- 1:05:32Speaker 18: It definitely wasn't you. How do you think he handled
- 1:05:36Speaker 18: that in week one in terms of having some of the.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: Anything we did in week one wasn't good enough, starting
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: with me. And again, that's how it is. Our focus
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: is on the Steelers, and we've made the corrections that
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: I feel like we need to make, and hopefully we
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: can continue to improve. And we've said this for as
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: long as I can remember. The teams that continue to
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: improve are going to be the ones that have a
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: chance at the end. And we didn't do enough good
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: things last week to win the football game, and our
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: focus now has to be on the Steelers coming back
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: in here.
- 1:06:11Speaker 8: To effectively stopping T.J. White and not allowing him to?
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: When you find out, let us know. I mean, a
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: great athlete, very instinctive, athletic, explosive getoff, got length, multiple moves.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: But just the instinctiveness of his brother was the same way.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: I got to see his brother play, and I bet
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: they intercepted the same pass. T.J. intercepted that one. Same
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: way as TJ did. They must have practiced that when
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: they were kids.
- 1:06:43Speaker 12: Mike, I don't think you got to overlap with Patrick
- 1:06:44Speaker 12: when he was here. How'd you get to know him
- 1:06:47Speaker 12: over the years?
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: Just through the course of, you know, I think like
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: people and similar, you know, backgrounds, I guess.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: I think there were just two quarterbacks.
- 1:07:03Speaker 19: Is that a concern at all going forward without Barron
- 1:07:05Speaker 19: being up there?
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: Barron was not feeling well.
- 1:07:11Speaker 12: How comfortable did Aaron look with Mike McCarthy being back
- 1:07:14Speaker 12: and running that offense?
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: I'm sure they go way back. Aaron's sure got plays
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: that he likes. I'm sure Mike's got plays that he
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: likes and then they kind of blend it together and
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: that's what they come up with I would say. comfortable
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: as he always does. Missed a couple, didn't connect on
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: a couple, but I think that when you saw in
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: the critical situations, he took some shots on third down,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: he uncovered or extended in the red zone like he
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: always does and found Pat. And then to me, I
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: think The biggest thing was just the way that they
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: handled the five-minute situation and being able to keep the
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: ball there at the end. That was pretty impressive for
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: the first week.
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: When it comes to the run game, what do you
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: think needs to improve to get more production out of it?
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: Got to get in the line of scrimmage, got to
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: block force, got to run where they ain't. I'm not
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: the smartest guy here, so that's how you run the football.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: You can't just sit there and You got to be
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: able to move people. You got to be able to
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: block safeties and people that come down there and want
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: to make tackles or you got to block nickel, which
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: we did some and which we didn't do enough of
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: and try to combine all that together.
- 1:08:41Speaker 17: Last week, you mentioned the importance of communication when it
- 1:08:43Speaker 17: comes to line games. Conversely, in the offensive side of
- 1:08:45Speaker 17: the ball, especially when it's a man blocking scheme. What
- 1:08:48Speaker 17: are the expectations when it comes to passing those off?
- 1:08:50Speaker 17: Are you trying to create a wall? Are you trying
- 1:08:51Speaker 17: to stick to your guy and just get him out
- 1:08:53Speaker 17: of the way?
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: Well, I mean, again, without going through a dissertation, you know.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: you have to flatten out the penetrator and give some
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: help and be able to, you know, again, you always
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: want these guys as they're coming and picking to finish
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: in front of the guy next to you. I mean,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: being able to flatten him off so that he doesn't
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: get into the crease and allow penetration. You don't want...
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: You can't allow one guy to block two. So that's
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: what we look for on defense. Conversely, offensively, they're trying
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: to flatten them out and then make sure that we
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: can help the guy next to us.
- 1:09:32Speaker 12: Mike, can you tell us about Romeo's personality just over
- 1:09:35Speaker 12: the last– No.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: You guys can get to know Romeo the best that
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: you want. I'm not going to have conversations about our
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: players when they're in the locker room. You want to
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: get to know Romeo, you can go in there and
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: introduce yourself to him.
- 1:09:45Speaker 12: What did you like about your play-action game against Seattle?
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: I mean, again, I think that that's– the third time
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: should have gone to the back. I mean, we're trying
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: to get it down the field. And, again, if we've
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: got three over two down the deep part of the field,
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: let's just take another 12 yards and see if we
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: can break a tackle. So I felt like we created
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: some space to be able to get that ball out there.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: I felt like the protection held up well enough most
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: of the time. And, you know, then being able to,
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: you know, not force the ball down to the field,
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: but be able to take what they give us. You
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: guys good? Thank you.

- 1:13:02Speaker 2: And now, great moments in history.
- 1:13:07Speaker 5: And Brandon Spikes is working.
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: He's at Florida.
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: He's working back at the alma mater.
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: I'll be nice.
- 1:13:16Speaker 5: And he's helping out Florida's program, trying to get them
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: back to where they were when he was there and
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: things like that.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: Is he still on the internet? I asked Evan about
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: that yesterday. I'm sure you know. I'm going to plead
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: the fifth.
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: You want his OnlyFans account?
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: Do you have a license.
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: For that thing?
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: No.
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: That was a great moment in PFW.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: Oh, yeah? Oh, you guys discovered the.
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: Who does a Google search of Brandon Spikes' junk?
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: And Frank goes, I have seen it. I have seen it.
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: I said it in the elevator yesterday. I was like, what?
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: And then Paul starts grilling me. Have you seen Brett
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: Favre's junk?
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Have you seen Soza?
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: And I just go, I don't get that. I have
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: no desire to see it.
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: I said, it's research. That's another great moment from.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: All right, back here on Patriots Unfiltered, 855-PATS-500 is the hotline.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: Podcasts at Patriots.com is the email address. We've turned the
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: page to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but I contended that losing
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: Sam Darnold wasn't as bad for the Patriots. For the Seahawks,
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: it's us losing A.J.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: Brown.
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: What you actually contended was it was irrelevant for Seattle.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: Well, George, whatever I said, George in Maryland says, I
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: agree with Fred 100%. We were at a disadvantage with Locke.
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: Locke played all preseason, so his ramp-up was seamless, and
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: he played better than Darnold did in the Super Bowl.
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: Never change, people. Never change.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: Good, George.
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: So we should have played. So, in other words, if
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: we played Tommy DeVito, we win.
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: He was ready to go. He played in the preseason.
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: He played in the preseason. Would have given you a
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: better chance to win. So I would say Mike Vrabel's
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: on the hot seat. Well, I don't recognize him.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: I think the gap between Locke and Darnold is a
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: lot bigger than May and DeVito.
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: That doesn't mean what you think it means. But I'm
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: going to say the gap between those two in both
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: cases is pretty similar. The backup is not even close
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: to the starter. But you actually said that the gap
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: is greater between Darnold and Locke.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: Was Drew Locke like Denver's man of the future for
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: a beat?
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: Maybe for a second. Maybe for a minute. Sorry, I
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: didn't say that right.
- 1:15:35Speaker 14: My bad.
- 1:15:37Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: And he's started some games.
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: I mean, he's been around a little bit.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: But not been good. I mean, Tommy DeVito started some
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: games too.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: Now it's working. Okay.
- 1:15:46Speaker 7: Right?
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: Tommy DeVito has starts under his belt. I mean, not
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: good ones.
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: He looked great in the preseason. Did he?
- 1:15:56Speaker 7: No.
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: I meant some of those practices.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: Okay, okay.
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: Did he look better in practice than he did in
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: the games?
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: He's got a good arm.
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: And I would actually say I'm more concerned about how
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: he looked in practice than in those preseason games. Truth
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: be told.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: Let's get back to the phones.
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: I can argue anything.
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: We have someone from L.A. that's been holding on. I
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: think his name is... Oh, he hung up.
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: He hung up.
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: All right. So we'll go to D.C.
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: Did he really hang up?
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: Herm's in D.C.
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: I thought that was a Matt. What's up, Herm?
- 1:16:28Speaker 10: What's going on, gentlemen?
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: Hey, Herm.
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: What's up, Herm?
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: Listen, guys.
- 1:16:34Speaker 15: Let me be the voice of reason, right?
- 1:16:36Speaker 8: Please.
- 1:16:36Speaker 13: Thank you.
- 1:16:36Speaker 15: I mean, I understand this area, you know, tends to
- 1:16:41Speaker 15: engage in hyperbole, especially when it just comes to one game.
- 1:16:47Speaker 15: And what Mike actually said, I mean, he was... Two
- 1:16:52Speaker 15: quick thoughts. What Mike said earlier, I think... Well, I
- 1:16:56Speaker 15: don't think... I know he was spot on because... I mean,
- 1:16:59Speaker 15: the remedy for Drake May is simply to just take underneath.
- 1:17:05Speaker 15: Like Fred said, you can't, you will never go broke
- 1:17:08Speaker 15: taking a profit. But if he just does that, guys
- 1:17:11Speaker 15: will be fine.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 1:17:13Speaker 15: He's just so in tune with his greatness, I feel like,
- 1:17:17Speaker 15: and he knows he can make the big plays. He
- 1:17:20Speaker 15: tends to force things at times. So if he just
- 1:17:23Speaker 15: adopts that mindset, I mean, he'll be an MVP. But
- 1:17:27Speaker 15: I will say this. with A.J. Brown being down now,
- 1:17:33Speaker 15: him being, in my opinion, so great, that's just part
- 1:17:38Speaker 15: of his job description.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 1:17:40Speaker 15: Not everything is going to be perfect. Tom Brady didn't
- 1:17:43Speaker 15: have it wrong in one of the Super Bowls. He
- 1:17:46Speaker 15: had to find a way to do it without his
- 1:17:47Speaker 15: top receiver. So that is his chance now to really
- 1:17:51Speaker 15: make his medal and show everybody who.
- 1:17:53Speaker 12: You really think he is.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: And, I mean, I know he's great.
- 1:17:57Speaker 15: But, I mean, now he has a chance to showcase
- 1:18:01Speaker 15: that he doesn't need to have everything perfect in order
- 1:18:05Speaker 15: to win games in this league. So that's all I
- 1:18:08Speaker 15: have for you guys.
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:18:11Speaker 14: You guys have new show times, right? So what are
- 1:18:12Speaker 14: the new times?
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Next week. Next week, 11 to 1, Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays,
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: starting next week.
- 1:18:20Speaker 14: Okay, three times a week.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: Got it.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: Thanks.
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: All right. Thanks, Herm.
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: Thanks, Herm.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: So you're Mike Vrabel. What's your pep talk to Romeo
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Dobbs this week?
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: It's all good, bro.
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: We've all dropped passes before.
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: We believe in you. We brought you here for a reason.
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: You had a great summer.
- 1:18:35Speaker 3: We know what you are.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: We need you, though.
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: So let's go. You know, game one.
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: If you're Josh McDaniels, do you go out of your
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: way to get him the ball early?
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: I like that. Yeah. Well, I mean, it's all that
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: cat and mouse game. If you're Pittsburgh, that's what you
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: kind of figure they might do. So do you, do
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: you play into their hands?
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: I'd run the same play that he dropped the one.
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: I don't know if I.
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: Would run that right off the goal, but I would,
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: I would try to dial something up. That's easy.
- 1:19:04Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: That, you know, First and ten, you run them on
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: that eight or ten yard out that to me was
- 1:19:11Speaker 3: money every time they ran it in training camp. Pitch
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: and catch, boom. First of all, you get a positive
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: play on first down. But more importantly, you get Romeo
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: Dobbs feeling positive mentally.
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: You get the crowd behind him.
- 1:19:23Speaker 6: And the crowd who's so in tune with the ups
- 1:19:25Speaker 6: and downs of the team, they're going to like to
- 1:19:27Speaker 6: see that too.
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: And I will say this about the Boston crowd that
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: I think is somehow, sometimes I think is a little
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: bit misunderstood. Yes, we're guilty of overreacting, positive and negative,
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: to first impressions. But there's also sort of a real
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: sympathetic nature to this crowd, I feel. And I think
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: that you guys are right. If he has initial success
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: in the game, the crowd, I think, is going to
- 1:19:54Speaker 3: be extra amped up for him.
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: Our guy needs our help.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: Yeah, that's right.
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: He needs our support. We need to show him that
- 1:20:02Speaker 3: we're not quitting on him now.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: We're like parents.
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: If he drops one early, it's going to be way
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: bigger of a reaction than if Mac Hollins drops one
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: early or Hunter Henry drops one early. If Dobbs happens
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: to be a guy who drops one early, you're going
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: to hear it from the crowd. So there is a
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: positive and negative, but I do feel like they recognize
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: this guy's struggling. We need to show him he's one
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: of ours.
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: Unless he keeps struggling.
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: Now I got to cut ties with you. What you
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: did on the inside is that was your business.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: I always draw parallels to the Red Sox with the Patriots.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: Sonny Gray is a guy that when he was in
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: small market teams, he always did well. But he went
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: to the Yankees. He struggled. And now they're saying kind
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: of that it hasn't proven yet, but could Dobbs be
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: one of those guys where all the focus on him
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: affects him more than others?
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: I don't think that's the case, but I think he
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: does have problems with dealing with adversity. You said yesterday
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: you think that these players nowadays, Fred, I forget how
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: you said it, but it's harder sometimes mentally, sports psychology.
- 1:21:14Speaker 15: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: And I agree with you because there's so many different
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: avenues For these guys to hear criticism.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: As opposed to, I dropped a pass.
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: They're much more exposed than they used to be.
- 1:21:24Speaker 4: There's an article in the paper tomorrow about it. And
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: then we're going to be on to the next thing.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: Right. That's the way it used to be.
- 1:21:29Speaker 17: Right.
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: But now there's all the ball knowers going through the stats.
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: You go on your phone. I'm just going to go
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: on the phone and see what's going on.
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: There's like 17 people that want me to die.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: Even for guys who played well, if you search.
- 1:21:40Speaker 6: Your name on Twitter, I'm sure you're going to find
- 1:21:42Speaker 6: somebody somewhere with something to say negative about.
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: You and your point.
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: These guys that play nowadays... They grew up with it.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: So it's easy for me to say, why would you
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: look at that?
- 1:21:53Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: Because that's how I think of it. I didn't grow
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: up with this. I can easily avoid everybody calling me
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: the fat old guy who's so negative if I want to.
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: But you like it.
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: You know, I mean.
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: You're not fat.
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: You're not that old either.
- 1:22:10Speaker 8: Wow.
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: That's the joke.
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: I gave you the requisite laugh.
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: He wouldn't do well on a roast panel. You know,
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: he'd be like, oh, you're not so bad. What does
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: that mean? Yeah, don't take it personally.
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: That's mean. Don Rickles, you're mean.
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: Mike writes in, podcast at Patriots.com, maybe it's recency bias,
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: but in both the Super Bowl and Week 1, it
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: seemed like any time Drake needed to make a play,
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: Mack Hollins was his clear-cut go-to option. But I was
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: surprised to see Hollins only get five targets. I know
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: Hollins isn't a top-tier wide receiver, but there seems to
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: be real chemistry there with Drake. Is there any reason
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: Hollins can't be a guy who gets eight to 12
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: targets a game? Or do you think more volume would
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: have a diminishing return for Mac if defenses started focusing
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: on him?
- 1:23:00Speaker 6: I'd probably say the second thing. I mean, I just,
- 1:23:03Speaker 6: I think I'm with Paul's side of the street of it.
- 1:23:05Speaker 6: The answer is not going to be to increase Mac
- 1:23:07Speaker 6: Hollins is target is to get Romeo Dobbs involved and
- 1:23:11Speaker 6: to keep Mac Collins doing what he does well. But
- 1:23:13Speaker 6: I think if you start asking him to do too
- 1:23:15Speaker 6: much and get outside of his comfort zone, then I
- 1:23:18Speaker 6: think you're going to get diminishing returns.
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: And I do think Collins's role will increase because it
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: has to without AJ Brown, just like it. He didn't
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: get any targets until the fourth quarter. I don't, I
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: think all five of his targets came in the fourth quarter. Um,
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: so obviously when Brown was out, Collins, you know, had a,
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: had a bigger role in the passing game. I think
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: he was more of a blocker earlier in the game.
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: So yeah, I, I, I think Collins is a guy
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: who has ability, um, But I don't know if you
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: want to rely on him as your big volume guy.
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: I mean, what did he have last year? About 50 catches?
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: Like 45, 50 catches?
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: Yeah, that sounds about right.
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I could see that going up because
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: of Brown's situation. Because I think Brown's going to be
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: out for at least four games. I wouldn't be surprised
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: if it's more. And then in those times, someone's got
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: to catch the passes. It can't all be Chisholm.
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: Well, in the large part it can be.
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: But he can't catch them all.
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: No.
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: He can't catch 25 a game.
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: 20.
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: 20.
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: Franklin and Baltimore, kind of what we were talking about before,
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: if you were told the Patriots will have a top
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: five passing attack, even with Brown's absence, who would be
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: the wide receivers you believe would have to step up
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: in addition to Dobbs and Hollins in order to still
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: be a top five passing.
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: So this, this means Dobbs stepped up.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: I think you could have a top five passing. I
- 1:24:47Speaker 3: think Drake made that good. Maybe I'm putting too much
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: on the quarterback, but I think quarterbacks drive passing games,
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: not the other way around.
- 1:24:55Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:24:55Speaker 6: I mean, everybody's going to, I mean, you're going to
- 1:24:57Speaker 6: have to get some more out of pop too. You know,
- 1:24:59Speaker 6: and it's just the wild card is what can Kyle
- 1:25:01Speaker 6: Williams do? Do they feel he can do more than
- 1:25:04Speaker 6: what you said, Paul, which is just, you're going to
- 1:25:06Speaker 6: take the top off the defense. You're going to be
- 1:25:08Speaker 6: the sacrificial guy on the outside and, Maybe we'll chuck
- 1:25:11Speaker 6: one up to you here and there. Or does he
- 1:25:12Speaker 6: actually have some kind of role where they're trying to
- 1:25:15Speaker 6: incorporate him?
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: I'm not expecting that.
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: But I could see them trying to expand him a
- 1:25:19Speaker 3: little bit.
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: But it just goes to the theme of them being predictable.
- 1:25:23Speaker 6: And now you have an opportunity to mix things up
- 1:25:26Speaker 6: a tiny bit. Maybe they can use that to their
- 1:25:28Speaker 6: advantage in terms of how they employ these guys.
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: And I would agree with that a thousand percent. But
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: I think there's a handful of guys in the league.
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: that are quarterback proof. I think you saw one last
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: Wednesday night with Jackson Smith and Jigba. It doesn't matter
- 1:25:43Speaker 3: if it's Drew Locke or Sam Darnold or anybody else.
- 1:25:47Speaker 3: He's that good. Jamar Chase doesn't need Joe Burrow to
- 1:25:50Speaker 3: make him. He's that good.
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: St.
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: Brown.
- 1:25:53Speaker 3: Justin Jefferson is that good. Most of these guys, I think,
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: are made to look better than they are because their
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: quarterbacks make them look good, really good. I think they're
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: driven by the quarterback. And I think Drake May has
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: that ability. I saw Phil Perry, no, Albert Breer on
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: NBC Sports Boston sort of laid out a storyline. You know,
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: he says, you know, like MVP votes, a lot of
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: times the storyline, you know, and last year we saw
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: it with Stafford. I think a lot of people looked
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: at that as a career achievement award, right? Voters like
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: the storyline. Well, you lose A.J. Brown in week one
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: and you go out and put up a top five offense.
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: No one's going to say, well, he was riding A.J.
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: Brown's coattails. If you go out and put 500 points up,
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: 550 points up, despite losing A.J. Brown, people are going
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: to have a hard time overlooking what Drake May did.
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: That was Albert Breer's point.
- 1:26:53Speaker 6: Yeah, I kind of have a morbid fascination with how
- 1:26:55Speaker 6: this is going to go. It's always interesting to me
- 1:26:58Speaker 6: when you take away the reliable players that Drake has
- 1:27:01Speaker 6: that confidence in, and I thought that was really developing
- 1:27:04Speaker 6: with A.J.
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: Brown.
- 1:27:05Speaker 6: I mean, you've seen, and just again, I always hate
- 1:27:08Speaker 6: comparing it to Brady, but we saw that was a
- 1:27:10Speaker 6: recurring theme.
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: Brady did more with less. I mean, who did he
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: have in 2013?
- 1:27:14Speaker 6: It's a bunch of cast-offs, and hopefully it accelerates Drake's growth.
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: I'll say this, going back to the emailer's question, other
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: than Dobbs and Hollins, who we had already stepping up,
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: In order to be that top five passing game, the
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: running game has to step up in order to allow them.
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: That's fair.
- 1:27:35Speaker 6: I have a real hard time seeing anything happen with
- 1:27:38Speaker 6: the worst run game in the league.
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: It's got to be better. It's got to be better.
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: As we heard from Vrabel, we've got to block people.
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: We can't be standing around. We've got to run where
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: they aim. We've got to be better.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: Mike in Wilmington, picking a bone with Paul. He keeps
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: saying that Pop is productive in the offense. He's caught
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: five passes against Seattle, yeah, for 20 yards. Pop has
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: seen his yards per game decrease every year of his career.
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: His success rate is pedestrian for the amount of volume
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: he gets. I don't know when Paul went from Pop
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: isn't a weapon to Pop is plenty productive. He's a
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: 25 to 30 yard per game player. He routinely catches
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: the ball short of the sticks and cannot pick up
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: the first down. Paul, you're trying to ditch the negative persona. No.
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: So I would say that you didn't see the same
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: game that I saw the other night. I think all
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: his catches went for first downs the other night.
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought he was pretty good.
- 1:28:29Speaker 3: And I think he had more than 20 yards, too.
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: It wasn't a wildly productive night, but I thought he
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: had 40 yards. He didn't have any big plays the
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: other night. Last year, I'm going to push back on that.
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: His efficiency last year, like you're talking about, he doesn't
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: have this. He averaged over 14 yards a catch on
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: the same efficiency numbers that Keyshawn Booty had. It was
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: like 40-something targets for 30-something catches. It was almost the same.
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: In terms of efficiency.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: So.
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: I just think that people look at Demario Douglas... They
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: thought he was going to be this 100 catch guy...
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: Like Julian Edelman and Wes Welker. And he's not that.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: And.
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: Drake May doesn't want that because he doesn't do that well.
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: That part of it is not Drake May's strength. Just
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: completing shallow crosses all day. I thought when they did
- 1:29:24Speaker 3: go to Douglas last year... He proved to be an
- 1:29:26Speaker 3: important guy... On bigger plays in some big spots. Now,
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: I agree with Evan, who often talks about in man coverage,
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: he's a different guy than in zone coverage. That's his flaw.
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: I don't think he sees the coverages and reads the
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: coverages as well as like the Welkers and Edelmans did.
- 1:29:45Speaker 3: And that's why I don't think he can be a
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: huge volume guy. But I think he has a very
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: specific role. I'm not looking for him to go out
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: and catch 90 passes. He's not going to do that.
- 1:29:55Speaker 3: But I thought he had a reasonably productive first game.
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: I don't think it was as good as I was
- 1:29:59Speaker 3: hoping because it wasn't a chunk play.
- 1:30:02Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:30:03Speaker 6: I still have questions if Drake just likes throwing a
- 1:30:06Speaker 6: little guys like him.
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: Like that to me is still.
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: I thought he did a great job of it last year.
- 1:30:10Speaker 6: I think a lot of those plays to me, though, were,
- 1:30:12Speaker 6: you know, I mean, like the touchdown was a great
- 1:30:14Speaker 6: throw against the Chargers there to start things off.
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: That was Chargers, right?
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: No, Houston.
- 1:30:20Speaker 3: Houston game. Down the field. I don't think he wants
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: to throw it four yards over the line of scrimmage.
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: He wants to get– Pop Douglas is more of a
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: big play slot now to me. And I don't– I'm not–
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: I'm under no illusions. He's not going to be the
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: 100-catch guy that so many in the Boston media tabbed
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: him for in year two. Again, I used to say
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: this to you all the time. Someone had to catch
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: the passes. It was him because he was the best
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: they had at that time. Now they have better guys
- 1:30:49Speaker 3: than him. Yeah. So he's in a role that I
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: think he's better suited for.
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: Jeremiah is still on the same thing. He says, I
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: believe pop's a good player and gets open consistently. But
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: when it comes to actual games, him and Drake trying
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: to connect always feels off. I don't think it's pop's fault.
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: And I believe he's just not someone Drake is confident
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: throwing to. Are you all worried about at all about
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: pop's future on the team with extension talks on the way?
- 1:31:14Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: I don't think he'll be on the team next year.
- 1:31:16Speaker 6: Yeah. I, I, I, Probably echo that as well. Dan,
- 1:31:20Speaker 6: it's your thing too, Fred. You say sometimes he falls
- 1:31:23Speaker 6: down a lot too.
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: Like there's some weird, kind of.
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: Gets over his skis a little bit.
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: I like Pop.
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: I just, I do think Paul's right though.
- 1:31:30Speaker 6: He was miscast early on, but I think he's a
- 1:31:33Speaker 6: key player for them, especially with his ability to get downfield.
- 1:31:36Speaker 6: I think that explosiveness is what sets him apart.
- 1:31:38Speaker 3: From like the quickness. I want to correct myself. He
- 1:31:40Speaker 3: only had 20 yards. I don't know why he thought
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: he had 40. He was right. He only had 20 yards.
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: So that's not, and I, even if it was 40,
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: I don't think that's good enough. Cause I think he's
- 1:31:49Speaker 3: should be making some big plays, but I do think
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: he got first downs. He, the longest third down they
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: converted all night was third and eight. He, he converted
- 1:31:58Speaker 3: it with eight yards.
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: He also had a third and short that he converted
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: for a first down. So I don't like, I just
- 1:32:05Speaker 3: don't know what you're looking for from him. Well, I
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: think like AJ Brown had four catches in the game
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: and evidently he was the difference between winning and losing.
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: I like, I don't know.
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: I mean, I think we all looked at, or at
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: least I did.
- 1:32:17Speaker 3: He had five catches on seven targets. Is that like,
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: is that not efficient?
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: Well, yeah, it's efficient.
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: But people are saying he's not efficient. Drake can't throw
- 1:32:27Speaker 3: it to him. This, that, he falls down. I don't
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: know what people are looking for.
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: People look at his speed and elusiveness, and they hope
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: for more dynamic stuff coming out of him. Or more consistent.
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: Like he did last year, averaging over 14 yards a catch.
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: That's why I was disappointed in the yards. The email
- 1:32:43Speaker 3: is right. He only had 20 yards. That's not enough.
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: five yards of catches, that's not good.
- 1:32:48Speaker 6: I just think I get stuck in the, yes, it's
- 1:32:50Speaker 6: a good thing that Drake and Spence spread the ball around,
- 1:32:52Speaker 6: did that last year, and that you don't always have
- 1:32:55Speaker 6: a guy to key on. But I also think at
- 1:32:57Speaker 6: times guys like Pop get hit for consistency when, yeah,
- 1:33:00Speaker 6: he has a good game one week and then the
- 1:33:01Speaker 6: next week he's quiet. So I'm just trying to figure
- 1:33:04Speaker 6: out what do you want? Do you want a guy
- 1:33:07Speaker 6: who week in and week out, you know you're going
- 1:33:09Speaker 6: to count on him for six, seven catches and the
- 1:33:11Speaker 6: other team does too?
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: Or do you want to go in and say, we
- 1:33:13Speaker 4: don't know who it's going to be this week.
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: We have six guys we love.
- 1:33:16Speaker 3: Which I think usually is you just don't have a guy.
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: I think Mike just said it better than I've been
- 1:33:19Speaker 3: trying to say it. Mike just explained it exactly the
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: way I feel. People looking for him.
- 1:33:25Speaker 3: To be something that is not there. I don't think
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: they have that. Like, Stephon Diggs was that last year.
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: Stephon Diggs is one of the best receivers of his generation.
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: You know, A.J. Brown is one of the best receivers
- 1:33:35Speaker 3: of his generation. Demario Douglas isn't that. Like, he's not
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: going to give you that kind of consistency.
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: Tucker writes in, I feel like Josh historically always had
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: strong run games. Has he stagnated in the league evolved?
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: How much is it on Drake May? Like Evan was
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: saying yesterday about not being able to recognize an audible
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: and how much of it is just being too predictable.
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: I think it's about blocking.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:34:04Speaker 6: I mean, I'd just, I'm going to start there before
- 1:34:06Speaker 6: I start pulling everything else apart. You know, this is
- 1:34:09Speaker 6: year two of them rebuilding this offensive line. Let's see
- 1:34:12Speaker 6: how AVT looks as he starts to get up to speed.
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:34:16Speaker 6: Let's see Jared Wilson getting a couple games under his belt.
- 1:34:18Speaker 6: That's where I'm sitting right now. But it is distressing.
- 1:34:22Speaker 6: And I don't know if that is just the only
- 1:34:24Speaker 6: big problem. If it does need to be more scheme diverse,
- 1:34:28Speaker 6: I think as Evan would say.
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: I think that his point about the motion is not
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: just because you're trying to trick the other team into
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: doing things. Evan's point, I think, is that the motion
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: sometimes makes it easier for the individuals to execute their blocks.
- 1:34:45Speaker 3: It creates different angles and puts defenses, you know, forces
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: the defense to adjust a little bit to the motion
- 1:34:52Speaker 3: and puts them in position where they're more easily blocked.
- 1:34:55Speaker 3: I think there's a lot of stuff that goes with it.
- 1:34:58Speaker 3: The guy who gets the most credit for scheming up
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: run games is Mike McDaniel, right? That's what he does. Now,
- 1:35:05Speaker 3: it didn't work on the first game.
- 1:35:06Speaker 6: It didn't work on the first game. That's Madison Pierce's fault.
- 1:35:11Speaker 3: Do you know he's been sacked? significantly like like over
- 1:35:16Speaker 3: 240 times in his career in the same amount of
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: starts that andrew luck retired oh my god with like
- 1:35:21Speaker 3: less you know like 40 less stop 50 less.
- 1:35:24Speaker 6: Starts dear god he's another one like it's just he
- 1:35:27Speaker 6: just takes a pound yeah but like just so talented
- 1:35:30Speaker 6: so built in the quarterback factory.
- 1:35:32Speaker 3: Is there a power station near with the charges because
- 1:35:36Speaker 3: why do their offensive linemen all go down for the
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: season all that like they lost one right they already
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: lost one funny.
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: Not for them. Cody writes in, I feel like the
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: Buffalo game in Buffalo last year, the first pass of
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: the game, they hit Diggs on a quick out to
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: get him involved in that environment. I'd love to see
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: a first down quick out to Dobbs, even if it
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: only gets four to five yards. I think a quick
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: catch could be huge. We were talking about that earlier.
- 1:36:02Speaker 3: I think there's merit to that.
- 1:36:04Speaker 6: Yeah, there might be something to it too with, you know,
- 1:36:06Speaker 6: in training camp, you saw him start to get confident
- 1:36:08Speaker 6: and then he started to make plays every day. You know,
- 1:36:11Speaker 6: it wasn't just like, oh, we had a good couple, like,
- 1:36:13Speaker 6: he was their most consistent receiver for a period of like,
- 1:36:15Speaker 6: I don't know, 10 days or so felt like he
- 1:36:16Speaker 6: was making all those catches.
- 1:36:18Speaker 8: So.
- 1:36:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: Like right now I'm pretty, you know, I'm, I'm staying on,
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: on the Dobbs train.
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: I might have to get off though.
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: I might have to.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:36:30Speaker 4: I mean, if it doesn't work with him, how in
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: trouble are they?
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: Cause there is that in the back of my mind,
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: I fall back on 28 years. So let's, let's, let's
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: say like not 28 years, let's say more like the
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: last 15 or so. And you start to think about,
- 1:36:44Speaker 3: you know, these random guys that came in. You're like, oh,
- 1:36:47Speaker 3: I'm expecting this out of this guy. And, you know,
- 1:36:50Speaker 3: for every Brandon LaFell, who was good.
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: Like a year, really.
- 1:36:54Speaker 3: You know, there's probably five, you know, Chad Ochocincos.
- 1:36:58Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: That, you know, Joey Galloways and Donald Hayes. And, you know,
- 1:37:02Speaker 3: these guys that just never really seemed to pick up
- 1:37:05Speaker 3: the offense and become a big part.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: Josh Boyce.
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: Doug Gabriel. Well, those are draft picks.
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: But like.
- 1:37:12Speaker 3: There's kind of a checkered past with free agent wide
- 1:37:16Speaker 3: receivers in this offense, in the Josh McDaniels, Charlie Weiss offense.
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: I've always downplayed and poo-pooed, oh, the complexity of the offense,
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: but there might be something to it. Like some guys
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: just get it and some guys just don't.
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:37:32Speaker 6: I mean, the thing that's been interesting to me is
- 1:37:34Speaker 6: to hear post-Bill. Like, you know, no one talked about
- 1:37:37Speaker 6: any of that stuff like when Bill was here and
- 1:37:39Speaker 6: now like to hear new players come in and talk
- 1:37:42Speaker 6: about the system. And I mean, AJ Brown stands out
- 1:37:44Speaker 6: in my mind, one of his, that there's a lot,
- 1:37:46Speaker 6: there's a lot, you know, and he didn't want to
- 1:37:48Speaker 6: go into details, but you know, when you hear now
- 1:37:50Speaker 6: with a whole new regime, Josh is still the same,
- 1:37:52Speaker 6: but it just confirms to me that even on the
- 1:37:55Speaker 6: spectrum of NFL offenses, this is, this is a difficult one.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: Matt writes in, is there a chance that will Campbell
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: struggles against TJ watt? And do we have a proper
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: way to block arguably one of the best linebackers in
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: the NFL?
- 1:38:10Speaker 4: Of course. I mean, anybody can struggle on any given day.
- 1:38:13Speaker 6: Herbig was the one who gave him some problems last year,
- 1:38:16Speaker 6: but I feel really good about Will Campbell.
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: I feel confident in him. I think it's, to me,
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: it's about getting in sync.
- 1:38:22Speaker 6: You know, as Evan said yesterday, working on the stunts
- 1:38:25Speaker 6: with AVT, those are something that, they got hit on
- 1:38:28Speaker 6: a couple times. I think Morgan Moses has probably gone
- 1:38:32Speaker 6: up against TJ Watt a bunch from his time in Baltimore.
- 1:38:35Speaker 6: I think it's mostly going to be him, but as
- 1:38:37Speaker 6: Paul said, they're going to move him around a little bit.
- 1:38:39Speaker 3: I'm going to worry about the offensive line until they
- 1:38:41Speaker 3: give me reason not to worry about them.
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: Lucy's dad in Boone, Iowa writes in, Since we feel
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: like the Patriots are going to roll the Steelers, maybe
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: you could talk about Tom Brady's color commentary during the
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: Eagles game. He made the comment, he just drops the
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: ball in there like a butterfly with sore legs. So
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: which is worse, Tom Brady's color commentary analogy, Drake May's
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: week one performance, or Evan's lack of lawn mowing skill?
- 1:39:09Speaker 6: I'll say that's a pretty bad analogy, but having listened
- 1:39:12Speaker 6: to Brady, I think he's improved immensely from that first
- 1:39:14Speaker 6: year where I found him to be cringey. I think
- 1:39:17Speaker 6: he does a good job as much as I listen
- 1:39:19Speaker 6: to these guys. It's usually white noise to me.
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: I'm not really qualified because I don't really hear them.
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: I watch Red Zone, so I don't get to hear
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: the full game commentary.
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: By the way, I don't get Red Zone anymore.
- 1:39:30Speaker 11: Why?
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: I went on it. It said you have to have
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: a subscription. I always had it before.
- 1:39:35Speaker 3: Do you have Xfinity?
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:39:38Speaker 4: There's a code for that. You can get that, Fred.
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: Oh, yeah?
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: You can effort that. That's what all the youngs tell me.
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: You can cheat and steal it.
- 1:39:46Speaker 4: No, it's not even cheating or stealing. That's the right people.
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: I didn't care. For NFL Red Zone?
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: It didn't bother me that I didn't have Red Zone
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: because I was focused on the Texans game with the Bills,
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: so I wasn't going to switch off anyway. Yeah. I
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: loved it.
- 1:40:03Speaker 6: I was red zone like 1 p.m. to 5-ish before
- 1:40:06Speaker 6: I took a break. It was perfect.
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: I like watching the game. Rainy day, just locked in.
- 1:40:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I was red zone from 1 to 7.30 the
- 1:40:12Speaker 3: whole time. Oh, yeah.
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I actually like watching football.
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: It doesn't even make sense.
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: Let's see. Who is this?
- 1:40:25Speaker 3: Will.
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: Willie from Vienna.
- 1:40:28Speaker 3: I also don't hate watch to your extent. And I
- 1:40:32Speaker 3: know why you were watching the Bills game.
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: That's what makes it interesting. You got to have a
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: dog in the fight, Paul. That's what makes it fun.
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: But my dog wasn't playing Sunday. No. My dog played
- 1:40:44Speaker 3: last Wednesday.
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: You create a dog. You create a dog. My dog was.
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: You have a lot of things going on. My dog
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: was Houston in that game. What was your reaction like
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: when they dropped that pick and answer? I was mortified.
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: It was terrible.
- 1:40:55Speaker 3: So I would come out of that as a Patriot fan.
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: I would sort of be worried. Because I love both teams.
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: I mean, I think much like I'm telling you about
- 1:41:05Speaker 3: Drake May, I think that was an aberration. I think
- 1:41:07Speaker 3: the Houston defense is pretty good. I think Buffalo hit them,
- 1:41:11Speaker 3: and Buffalo had a better day than the Houston defense did.
- 1:41:13Speaker 3: I'd be more worried that the Houston offense looked pretty good.
- 1:41:16Speaker 3: And if they can play reasonably close to that every
- 1:41:18Speaker 3: week with that defense, that's going to be a scary team.
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: But what if Buffalo's defense turns out to suck this year?
- 1:41:25Speaker 3: Oh, I think there's a chance that that could happen.
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: Right. So that's the point of week one.
- 1:41:28Speaker 3: But Buffalo's defense, in my view, has kind of consistently
- 1:41:32Speaker 3: sucked for a long time now. I know the numbers
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: would tell you that they're top 10. That's why I
- 1:41:36Speaker 3: don't really care about the stuff that you guys throw
- 1:41:39Speaker 3: in my face. Not so much you, Mike. I appreciate that.
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: They get to play the Jets and the Dolphins four times.
- 1:41:45Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: And I think you can put up some plastic numbers
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: against bad teams. When they play good teams, they generally
- 1:41:51Speaker 3: get the ball moved on them and allow points. But
- 1:41:55Speaker 3: I think that they win anyway when they do that.
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: So they kind of looked pretty good. They got DJ Moore,
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: their new guy. He has 100 yards. Dalton Kincaid.
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: Knox.
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: Dalton Kincaid.
- 1:42:07Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: Great catch.
- 1:42:08Speaker 3: There's sort of... First time he's been healthy in two seasons.
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: A lot of people writing about him. What a big
- 1:42:14Speaker 3: part of the offense he could be. He has 130 yards.
- 1:42:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:42:19Speaker 3: I would worry about Houston looking really good on offense
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: and Buffalo shredding a really good defense. I would worry
- 1:42:29Speaker 3: about those two things if I was a Patriots player.
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: Did you even hear Will Anderson's name all game?
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: I didn't notice.
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 1:42:37Speaker 3: I mean, like, I watched. To your point, you watched
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: that game exclusively.
- 1:42:40Speaker 4: Yeah, that was funny.
- 1:42:42Speaker 6: I have such, like, loose expectations early in the season
- 1:42:44Speaker 6: for most teams. I'm like, you know, it's going to
- 1:42:45Speaker 6: take a little while to figure out. And, like, Buffalo
- 1:42:47Speaker 6: just came out fully formed. Like, just doing exactly what
- 1:42:50Speaker 6: they do. It looks exactly like, you know, Josh Allen.
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: Right out of preseason. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: James Cook looked great.
- 1:42:56Speaker 3: That offensive performance looked better than virtually anything I saw
- 1:42:59Speaker 3: from them last year.
- 1:43:00Speaker 15: Mm-hmm.
- 1:43:01Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:43:01Speaker 3: I mean, I know they ran the ball. They ran
- 1:43:03Speaker 3: the ball really well last year. Very good.
- 1:43:05Speaker 6: No, I, but you, you said you were laughing. I
- 1:43:07Speaker 6: was thinking the same thing when he ran those first,
- 1:43:08Speaker 6: I was going.
- 1:43:09Speaker 3: To text you. The only reason why I didn't text
- 1:43:10Speaker 3: you is because I thought you were going to be out.
- 1:43:12Speaker 3: You wouldn't have seen it.
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: No, I could plan change of plans. I got to
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: watch red zone on Sunday.
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: It was amazing.
- 1:43:16Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:43:17Speaker 3: Literally, the first third down of the first drive. They
- 1:43:22Speaker 3: designed run to John. I'm glad they're going to try
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: to keep him out of harm's way.
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: Willie in Vienna, I have to say it. Everyone is
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: panicking about Drake's three interceptions, and I think we need
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: to calm down a little bit. Was it ugly? Absolutely.
- 1:43:36Speaker 2: especially after half a year without Patriots football. Josh Allen
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: threw basically the same game-losing interception against Houston. It's only
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: not talked about as much because the defender had two
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: left hands. Matthew Stafford threw one against the 49ers and
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: could easily have had three more. And I'm deliberately comparing
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: Drake to good quarterbacks, not bringing up Bo Nix's fumble compilation. So, yeah,
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: Drake has to improve, no question. But panic?
- 1:44:03Speaker 13: Nope.
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: Drake is our guy. Let him play.
- 1:44:06Speaker 3: So I have a couple comments.
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: First, I would say, can we stop with the everybody's
- 1:44:15Speaker 3: overreacting because that's not really what's happening. Like, that Drake
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: May sucks now. I'm not hearing that. Drake May had
- 1:44:21Speaker 3: a bad game. People were saying that. I don't hear
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: people falling off the Drake May bandwagon. I don't feel
- 1:44:28Speaker 3: like around here people are saying that he's not going
- 1:44:31Speaker 3: to bounce back. Like we've just spent the whole show
- 1:44:34Speaker 3: telling you that we, we think that.
- 1:44:36Speaker 2: Was an average guys think he's going to be fine. Yeah.
- 1:44:39Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:44:39Speaker 3: But this is what I'm saying.
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: Maybe not Tony, but Felger does.
- 1:44:42Speaker 3: There there's legitimate, in my opinion, talk about how he
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: has played against these really good defenses, but that doesn't
- 1:44:50Speaker 3: mean people think he's not any good. A lot of
- 1:44:53Speaker 3: quarterbacks struggle against the better defenses. That's normal. Um, The
- 1:44:57Speaker 3: second thing is you can't compare a guy throwing for
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: like 150 yards and three picks with a guy throwing
- 1:45:02Speaker 3: for 350 and should have had a pick that lost
- 1:45:05Speaker 3: the game at the end while putting 38 on the
- 1:45:07Speaker 3: board against Houston.
- 1:45:08Speaker 17: Right.
- 1:45:09Speaker 3: Like, yeah, he threw a bad pass, which, again, I
- 1:45:11Speaker 3: would tell you someone wasn't on the right page there
- 1:45:14Speaker 3: because the receiver went out, the quarterback threw it in.
- 1:45:17Speaker 3: Maybe it was Josh Allen's fault. I'm going to guess
- 1:45:21Speaker 3: it wasn't. I'm going to guess it was Josh Palmer's fault.
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: Jeff in Canada. There are a few things I'd like
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: to see go on a PU hiatus. Just give a
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: little break. Just give a little break, please, of these things. One,
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: use of the phrase small C concern. It was cool
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: the first 10 times. The last 300, it's played out.
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: Reminds me of Peter King for some reason. He's big
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: C concern. Small C concern.
- 1:45:48Speaker 3: I'm going to make it capital C concern from now on.
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: Coffee nerdness.
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: No, we all use that one a lot.
- 1:45:55Speaker 8: Two.
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: That's valid criticism.
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: Use of the word binky. It was never cool. I
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: can't be the only one who finds it to be
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: a bit cringy. Just say his favorite target or his
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: go-to guy. Okay. We got that from Dante. Binky.
- 1:46:10Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:46:10Speaker 3: I don't feel like we overused that one. There's a
- 1:46:12Speaker 3: small sea concern.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: Well, we used it today. I used it.
- 1:46:15Speaker 3: I didn't say you'd never use it.
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: I'm guilty.
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: Calls from Christian in L.A. Speaking of which, he used
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: to actually make good points. At first, it was fine.
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: The show needed a heel. Now it's just obnoxious. Time
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: to get some new script writers because he makes me
- 1:46:30Speaker 2: hit mute or skip. Don't let him be so annoying
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: that we long for Nick Baby Love to reappear.
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: Oh, so Christian's a good caller.
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: Is he?
- 1:46:40Speaker 10: He's Nick Baby Love. I don't need a nickname.
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: He is a good caller. We'll see. Nick, guess who's
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: on the line? Christian in L.A., what's up?
- 1:46:49Speaker 10: I'm going to sing a song for Paul today. It's
- 1:46:51Speaker 10: called The Love Song. Thank you, Paul. I've changed my heart.
- 1:46:56Speaker 10: You are now my favorite P.U.
- 1:46:58Speaker 15: Host.
- 1:46:59Speaker 10: Thank you, thank you, thank you. Sorry, Nick, but I'm
- 1:47:03Speaker 10: going to annoy you today. Anyway, guys, I think, and
- 1:47:07Speaker 10: I'm going to propose something radical here. that the passing
- 1:47:11Speaker 10: game is going to be fine. The passing game is
- 1:47:12Speaker 10: going to.
- 1:47:13Speaker 8: Be all right.
- 1:47:13Speaker 10: Yeah, it was a little janky.
- 1:47:15Speaker 7: A.J.
- 1:47:15Speaker 10: Brown is down. We're going to get him back by
- 1:47:17Speaker 10: the midseason to end of season.
- 1:47:19Speaker 8: Whatever.
- 1:47:21Speaker 10: We need to make a hard, radical shift towards fixing
- 1:47:25Speaker 10: the running game now. In order for Drake May to
- 1:47:28Speaker 10: have any success, they're going to have to run the ball.
- 1:47:31Speaker 10: Teams are not going to come out of too high
- 1:47:33Speaker 10: a shell. We know that. The other guys, he can
- 1:47:36Speaker 10: lift them up with his off-schedule stuff. Can we do this?
- 1:47:40Speaker 10: Here's the question. What is our deepest position? Who is
- 1:47:45Speaker 10: our best player at that deepest position? Could we maybe
- 1:47:50Speaker 10: put that guy on the trading block for somebody? Can
- 1:47:53Speaker 10: you put that guy on the trading block for someone
- 1:47:55Speaker 10: that can really help us in the running game so
- 1:47:57Speaker 10: we can sustain our success in building the offense forward?
- 1:48:02Speaker 10: I would think Josh would have taken care of that
- 1:48:04Speaker 10: in the offseason knowing how teams are going to defend us.
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: I think improvement in the running game has to come
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: from within. We're not bringing that in from outside.
- 1:48:14Speaker 3: Who would you suggest that they trade for to help
- 1:48:16Speaker 3: the running game?
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: Is it a lineman or a running back?
- 1:48:21Speaker 10: No, a lineman. I think if we take whoever our
- 1:48:24Speaker 10: deepest position, second string guy or whatever, or even our
- 1:48:27Speaker 10: first string guy, if the position is really deep and
- 1:48:30Speaker 10: we try to go and pry someone from some other team.
- 1:48:35Speaker 3: So you want to trade for a backup lineman on
- 1:48:37Speaker 3: another team? No.
- 1:48:40Speaker 10: I want to try to pry one of their starting linemen.
- 1:48:43Speaker 3: You know, like when you splash trade.
- 1:48:44Speaker 10: That happens every year.
- 1:48:47Speaker 3: Every year starting linemen get traded? During the season?
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: Splash trades happen, Paul.
- 1:48:53Speaker 14: What?
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: Splash trades. Splash trades happen.
- 1:48:56Speaker 10: Big trade.
- 1:48:57Speaker 3: So a starting offensive lineman happens during the year often?
- 1:49:03Speaker 10: No, not often. That's why it would be a splash.
- 1:49:05Speaker 10: But there are these instances where you have a team
- 1:49:07Speaker 10: that feels like, oh, like they drafted a backup lineman
- 1:49:12Speaker 10: with their first-round pick.
- 1:49:14Speaker 3: So you're going to trade a backup player on your
- 1:49:17Speaker 3: team for someone else's starting offensive lineman when you people
- 1:49:21Speaker 3: tell me that nobody around the league has enough offensive linemen.
- 1:49:26Speaker 14: Let me try again, Paul.
- 1:49:27Speaker 3: Yeah, because I think that all lines kind of stink.
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: But put yourself in the shoes of the team, Christian.
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: Why would you trade away one of your starting offensive
- 1:49:37Speaker 2: linemen once the season is over? For a backup. For
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: a backup player from the Patriots.
- 1:49:43Speaker 10: Here's the proposal that I'm making. Again, it's not the
- 1:49:46Speaker 10: backup player. I'm saying, let's say that team that has
- 1:49:50Speaker 10: a good team and they're sort of deep on their–
- 1:49:53Speaker 10: with their offensive line, but they're not deep in their
- 1:49:56Speaker 10: running back room or they're not deep in their whatever
- 1:49:59Speaker 10: room we have a guy because we're deep in that
- 1:50:02Speaker 10: in our corresponding room that we, we kind of trust
- 1:50:06Speaker 10: our second string guy that we would take a shot
- 1:50:08Speaker 10: at getting rid of our first string guy at that position.
- 1:50:11Speaker 10: But their first string guy, online because they trust their
- 1:50:15Speaker 10: second string guy.
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: Wow. I don't think such a player exists on the
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: Patriots right now.
- 1:50:19Speaker 3: That trade dramatically changed just in the span of the
- 1:50:21Speaker 3: phone call. It went from trading someone who you're really
- 1:50:24Speaker 3: deep at, one of your second or third string players,
- 1:50:27Speaker 3: at a position. Now you're trading a starter who you
- 1:50:29Speaker 3: feel good about.
- 1:50:30Speaker 2: So I think what he's saying is.
- 1:50:33Speaker 3: I don't think that they have that kind of personnel.
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: No, that's right.
- 1:50:36Speaker 3: You want to make a trade like he's talking about?
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: You know who you're talking about trading? Christian Gonzalez.
- 1:50:41Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:50:43Speaker 3: That'll get you a lot in return.
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: Well, what if it was?
- 1:50:45Speaker 3: And I don't think anyone, and certainly I'm not interested
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: in making that trade.
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: I don't think anyone else is either.
- 1:50:51Speaker 3: What's he getting you?
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: Well, that's, I'm just asking.
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: So I think, I think what he's saying is.
- 1:50:56Speaker 3: You're not getting Trent Williams for Carlton Davis.
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: You take the, you take the position group that you
- 1:51:01Speaker 2: are the deepest and you trade the guy who is
- 1:51:04Speaker 2: a starter, but is the low, the lower of the
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: three or four or two or whatever position group is.
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:51:11Speaker 3: I just don't know.
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: So Trevion Henderson, for example.
- 1:51:13Speaker 3: So there's like, what would you say? Conservatively five teams
- 1:51:16Speaker 3: that probably feel really good about their offensive lines.
- 1:51:19Speaker 8: Sure.
- 1:51:20Speaker 3: You know, I don't know.
- 1:51:20Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: The Eagles.
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:51:23Speaker 3: Um, Maybe the Rams. I don't know who else. How
- 1:51:28Speaker 3: many teams have five offensive linemen they feel really good about?
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:51:34Speaker 3: Good enough to trade one of them.
- 1:51:35Speaker 2: I get your point.
- 1:51:36Speaker 3: I just don't think it's realistic. It's like to expect
- 1:51:40Speaker 3: someone to trade a starting caliber offensive lineman who's going
- 1:51:42Speaker 3: to impact your running game.
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: Now, on the other hand, let's just say we loved
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: our offensive line and somebody wanted Morgan Moses to fill
- 1:51:51Speaker 2: a thing and we could pry away somebody on their team.
- 1:51:55Speaker 4: Put Lomo in.
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: Right, because you've got somebody in waiting. That's a little different.
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: I couldn't see that happening.
- 1:52:02Speaker 4: That's a long one.
- 1:52:03Speaker 6: I think the more likely thing is that you stick
- 1:52:04Speaker 6: with these five talented guys because I don't. I don't
- 1:52:07Speaker 6: know which one Christian wants to yank either. He just
- 1:52:09Speaker 6: seems like he wants somebody to replace him.
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: He's freaking out.
- 1:52:12Speaker 3: See, I agree with Christian. I'm always looking to upgrade.
- 1:52:15Speaker 3: And again, I'll defend Christian again here. I'll say that
- 1:52:20Speaker 3: that will never happen, but I've seen too many things
- 1:52:22Speaker 3: in the NFL that I didn't see. I never thought
- 1:52:25Speaker 3: Dallas would trade Micah Parsons as an example. I don't
- 1:52:28Speaker 3: know why you would trade an elite talent like that.
- 1:52:30Speaker 3: over money and then end up trading for Quinn and
- 1:52:33Speaker 3: Williams a half a season later and giving him a
- 1:52:35Speaker 3: boatload of money that you could have just given to
- 1:52:37Speaker 3: Micah Parsons. So I'm not telling you it will never happen.
- 1:52:41Speaker 3: I've seen crazy things happen. I just would be skeptical
- 1:52:44Speaker 3: that it would happen. I think that they could do
- 1:52:47Speaker 3: better than their offensive lineman. I absolutely do. I think
- 1:52:49Speaker 3: you could upgrade at least two spots, but I just
- 1:52:53Speaker 3: don't think it's realistic that you're going to get those
- 1:52:55Speaker 3: guys that are upgrades over what you have.
- 1:52:57Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:52:58Speaker 3: From other teams that are all dying to find offensive linemen.
- 1:53:02Speaker 2: Especially at this point.
- 1:53:03Speaker 6: I'd rather go find a legit blocking tight end to
- 1:53:07Speaker 6: complement the five offensive linemen. I think that's an easier
- 1:53:09Speaker 6: route to.
- 1:53:10Speaker 4: Put something new in.
- 1:53:11Speaker 6: But even if you go and get a new player,
- 1:53:13Speaker 6: I still don't think it assures that now that line
- 1:53:15Speaker 6: is going to reset and then be better than what
- 1:53:18Speaker 6: you might have had if you just stuck with the
- 1:53:19Speaker 6: starting five that you set with. to start the season with,
- 1:53:22Speaker 6: you know, Lomu backing up.
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: Let's, let's, let's just hope that last week we came
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: up against one of the best defensive fronts in the
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: league that goes four or five deep in quality players.
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: And it ain't going to look like that this week,
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: which is what I'm counting on.
- 1:53:37Speaker 4: Damn him.
- 1:53:37Speaker 2: We're not going to be going.
- 1:53:38Speaker 3: I'm not expecting to have a lot of success running
- 1:53:41Speaker 3: the ball all year, but it should look better than
- 1:53:43Speaker 3: it did last year.
- 1:53:43Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:53:45Speaker 2: Uh, Gino's in Las Vegas. What's up, Gino?
- 1:53:48Speaker 11: Hey, um, Yeah, you know, in my opinion, guys, I
- 1:53:54Speaker 11: do think there's a bit of overreaction. I'm not saying
- 1:53:56Speaker 11: on your guys' end, but I think that we're behaving
- 1:54:00Speaker 11: as if Drake May didn't show us who he was
- 1:54:03Speaker 11: for a whole season. And to be quite honest, the
- 1:54:07Speaker 11: Seattle defense showed us who they were for a whole
- 1:54:10Speaker 11: season and into the playoffs. So it's fair to say that, like,
- 1:54:15Speaker 11: the way the game played out wasn't a shocker. Like,
- 1:54:17Speaker 11: I mean, three interceptions, we can't have it, right? But
- 1:54:21Speaker 11: at three interceptions in the one quarter, it's crazy. But,
- 1:54:25Speaker 11: you know, at the end of the day, Drake's going
- 1:54:26Speaker 11: to be who he is. He's going to come out.
- 1:54:28Speaker 11: He's going to do his thing. We know who the
- 1:54:30Speaker 11: receivers are. The only questions that we have is how
- 1:54:34Speaker 11: is Dobbs going to do in this offense and what
- 1:54:36Speaker 11: the kid Chisholm is going to do when he's getting
- 1:54:38Speaker 11: the ball in his hand more. Because we know who
- 1:54:40Speaker 11: Williams is. We know who Pop is. I mean, what happened,
- 1:54:44Speaker 11: we were not... Like, where did we confuse ourselves to
- 1:54:47Speaker 11: thinking that we were going to just go out and
- 1:54:49Speaker 11: handle the Seattle defense like it was gravy? Like, their scheme,
- 1:54:53Speaker 11: their players, like, they were good, right? And the thing is, like, oh,
- 1:54:58Speaker 11: we're talking about trading offensive linemen to get... I know
- 1:55:00Speaker 11: we wouldn't have to run, but isn't the conversation, did
- 1:55:03Speaker 11: Drake pop out of the pocket a little too early?
- 1:55:05Speaker 11: I mean, if I was a coach, I would have
- 1:55:06Speaker 11: told him, hey, man, take a look, take two, get
- 1:55:09Speaker 11: out of there.
- 1:55:09Speaker 3: Yeah, that's fair. Some people... we're a little critical of that,
- 1:55:13Speaker 3: that last point about him bailing on the pocket a
- 1:55:16Speaker 3: little early at times.
- 1:55:17Speaker 8: Sure.
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:55:18Speaker 3: I'm sure that there were occasions that he did that.
- 1:55:20Speaker 2: Yeah. Thanks, Gino. Phone's a little over-modulated, but I don't
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: know if that's us or you. Erickson, Louisiana. What's up, Erick?
- 1:55:30Speaker 21: Hey, I guess my question is, you know, watching, you know,
- 1:55:36Speaker 21: what happened in Seattle and hearing all these critics talk about,
- 1:55:41Speaker 21: you know, Drake May making these careless mistakes and, you know,
- 1:55:47Speaker 21: it's kind of in his nature of just being a gunslinger.
- 1:55:50Speaker 21: Do you think Josh McDaniels and his system is the
- 1:55:57Speaker 21: right thing for Drake May? Or do you think that
- 1:56:00Speaker 21: Drake May just has to grow up and, you know,
- 1:56:03Speaker 21: make better decisions? Or is it kind of like a
- 1:56:07Speaker 21: 50-50 thing where you, I think I've heard, you kind
- 1:56:12Speaker 21: of have to live with Drake May making some of
- 1:56:15Speaker 21: these careless mistakes, but then we're going to probably go
- 1:56:18Speaker 21: down the path of like a Josh Allen kind of situation.
- 1:56:23Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you know, I've heard people say, is
- 1:56:26Speaker 2: Josh McDaniels the right OC for Drake May? Let's not
- 1:56:30Speaker 2: forget last year.
- 1:56:31Speaker 3: I mean, he was the runner-up for the MVP. He
- 1:56:33Speaker 3: was one vote shy of winning the MVP.
- 1:56:34Speaker 2: They had one of the best offenses in the league
- 1:56:37Speaker 2: last year. Now, I know everyone's focusing on, well, what
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: happened in the playoffs when they got to these better defenses?
- 1:56:45Speaker 2: That's fair. But I'm not sure that a different OC would,
- 1:56:50Speaker 2: I don't know, would have made that much of a difference.
- 1:56:53Speaker 4: No, it seemed to work last year.
- 1:56:54Speaker 6: I think your thing about growing up and maturing a
- 1:56:56Speaker 6: little bit and continuing to learn to be a quarterback,
- 1:56:59Speaker 6: I think that's something that we don't talk about enough.
- 1:57:01Speaker 6: How many games has he really played in the NFL
- 1:57:04Speaker 6: right now? It's still a process with him. I'm fully
- 1:57:07Speaker 6: invested because he has all the talent in the world,
- 1:57:09Speaker 6: but I do think that there's a learning curve here.
- 1:57:12Speaker 4: You face better defenses.
- 1:57:14Speaker 6: Now they unlock things about you that other defenses are
- 1:57:16Speaker 6: going to want to do, and so it's a never-ending
- 1:57:19Speaker 6: kind of battle of counters and trying.
- 1:57:22Speaker 2: To adjust to what teams are doing to you.
- 1:57:23Speaker 6: So he has to learn to be a quarterback, and
- 1:57:25Speaker 6: he's 24 years old, and you look at the level
- 1:57:28Speaker 6: that Josh Allen has got to to avoid Brady, but
- 1:57:31Speaker 6: It is possible to not be the player you were
- 1:57:34Speaker 6: on the first start of your second full season as
- 1:57:36Speaker 6: a starter.
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: All right. Thanks, Eric. And thank you, everybody, for calling in,
- 1:57:41Speaker 2: for emailing, for just listening. We'll be back tomorrow at noon.
- 1:57:47Speaker 3: Tomorrow.
- 1:57:48Speaker 2: We'll do our picks.
- 1:57:49Speaker 3: We will.
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: Any preview? Just, you know, without naming names?
- 1:57:53Speaker 3: I think you know, Fred.
- 1:57:54Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:57:54Speaker 3: What happens?
- 1:57:55Speaker 2: I really don't know.
- 1:57:56Speaker 3: What happens generally? You and I.
- 1:57:58Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:57:58Speaker 6: Here.
- 1:57:59Speaker 3: Everybody else.
- 1:58:00Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:58:00Speaker 14: What?
- 1:58:00Speaker 4: I didn't do good on the picks?
- 1:58:02Speaker 2: So we'll get into that tomorrow.
- 1:58:05Speaker 3: One member of the show was horrifically bad.
- 1:58:07Speaker 14: Really?
- 1:58:08Speaker 3: I'm going to leave it at that.
- 1:58:09Speaker 4: And it wasn't the one you think.
- 1:58:10Speaker 2: Okay. Is that why she was in a bad mood?
- 1:58:13Speaker 14: No.
- 1:58:14Speaker 2: It wasn't her either. And it wasn't her either. Oh, okay.
- 1:58:18Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: We'll get all to that tomorrow. See you then.
- 1:58:23Speaker 4: Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
