- 0:02Speaker 1: Good afternoon, everybody, and welcome to a brand new live
- 0:05Speaker 1: episode of Foul Territory. Alana Rizzo in for Scott Brong
- 0:09Speaker 1: alongside the two men you know very well. AJ Pierzynski,
- 0:13Speaker 1: who is in San Diego. We'll get to him in
- 0:15Speaker 1: just a moment. And of course, Eric Kratz. Press and subscribe, guys,
- 0:18Speaker 1: for us, please, on whatever platform you are on. Check
- 0:21Speaker 1: out all the fresh merch, easy for me to say,
- 0:24Speaker 1: including player license gear at FoulTerritoryShop.com. Also do not forget
- 0:29Speaker 1: after the Dodgers and the Braves game, we will be
- 0:31Speaker 1: hosting a postgame show. So make sure you tune in
- 0:35Speaker 1: with Kevin Pillar, Todd Frazier, and Heidi Watney. They will
- 0:38Speaker 1: take you through that postgame show after Los Angeles and Atlanta.
- 0:42Speaker 2: All right, guys.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Good to see you.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Good to be with you.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Just real quick thoughts before we get into some things
- 0:48Speaker 1: here on this game three, LA and Atlanta. AJ, you
- 0:52Speaker 1: go first.
- 0:54Speaker 3: The Yankees still can't play defense and do the fundamentals
- 0:57Speaker 3: very well, and that's costing the game. The Guardians aren't
- 1:01Speaker 3: very good, and the White Sox are going to the LCS.
- 1:03Speaker 3: That's kind of what– the Guardians can't hit. I mean,
- 1:06Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Krauts. I know we have Kipnis on here.
- 1:08Speaker 3: You love Steven Vogt. I love Steven Vogt. They can
- 1:10Speaker 3: really pitch, but they can't hit a lick. I mean,
- 1:13Speaker 3: if it wasn't for the error by the White Sox yesterday,
- 1:15Speaker 3: they might still not have scored in the series. So
- 1:18Speaker 3: it's been really– It's been hard to watch. If you're
- 1:21Speaker 3: a Guardians fan, I'm sorry. I'm obviously not a Guardians fan.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I'm a White Sox fan, and it's been great for
- 1:25Speaker 3: White Sox fans, but man, they cannot hit.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I would say overall, just the general look of this postseason.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Not one narrative plays out. You could give me any
- 1:37Speaker 2: narrative of, oh, this team, when they out Homer another team,
- 1:40Speaker 2: they win. When this team, they're so good at defense,
- 1:44Speaker 2: you know, their defense. Wait, the team that makes the
- 1:47Speaker 2: most errors loses. Like all the narratives, all the narratives
- 1:52Speaker 2: are out the window. So you need to tune into
- 1:54Speaker 2: every game. I've had a blast. And I agree with
- 1:57Speaker 2: all that you said, except Steven Vogt and Jason Kipnis
- 2:00Speaker 2: can hit. So maybe they should get in that bat.
- 2:03Speaker 1: All right, guys, it is now time to charge the mound.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Before we get started on that, let's hear from Aaron
- 2:14Speaker 1: Boone and Cam Schlittler after last night's loss.
- 2:18Speaker 4: I mean, obviously a really rough night to say the
- 2:21Speaker 4: least for us. So, you know, we got to get
- 2:24Speaker 4: over it. You know, we've responded all year to difficult times.
- 2:31Speaker 3: We've got to do that again. We've got to get
- 2:32Speaker 3: ourselves up off the mat.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Obviously, tonight was just not good enough for us and
- 2:37Speaker 4: certainly not good enough to beat that club. We've got
- 2:41Speaker 4: to get over it and plan for our lives Tuesday night.
- 2:47Speaker 5: How grueling is a night like tonight when the defense
- 2:49Speaker 5: is breaking down, forcing you to throw more pitches out there? Obviously,
- 2:55Speaker 5: it starts with me. I'll be the first one to
- 2:57Speaker 5: say that I didn't do my job, but It didn't
- 3:00Speaker 5: seem like we really showed up today, so that's what happens.
- 3:04Speaker 5: They played really good baseball and took advantage of those opportunities.
- 3:09Speaker 1: What do you think that is?
- 3:09Speaker 5: I don't got an answer for that. All I can
- 3:15Speaker 5: do is assess my outing and realize that it needs
- 3:17Speaker 5: to be better than that.
- 3:20Speaker 1: I certainly appreciate Cam Schlittler talking to the media postgame
- 3:23Speaker 1: after that loss. More to be said than Blake Snell
- 3:27Speaker 1: did after his loss. But Tampa Bay raised a 5-2 victory, guys.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Tampa Bay now has the advantage, 2-1, as they go
- 3:34Speaker 1: back to the Bronx. Really, right now, AJ, the only
- 3:38Speaker 1: person for the New York Yankees that seems to be
- 3:40Speaker 1: getting the job done is Ben Rice. How do they
- 3:43Speaker 1: flip this script?
- 3:44Speaker 2: 2-0, not 2-1. 2-0.
- 3:47Speaker 1: What did I say? 2-1, sorry.
- 3:48Speaker 2: 2-0. My bad.
- 3:49Speaker 1: How do they flip this script?
- 3:53Speaker 3: Catch the ball, get hit with runners in scoring position. Listen,
- 3:58Speaker 3: Cam Schmiller can say he didn't do his job all
- 4:00Speaker 3: he wants. I mean, the Rays did. First of all,
- 4:02Speaker 3: let's give the Rays a ton of credit. They didn't
- 4:04Speaker 3: strike out. They fouled off a ton of pitches, and
- 4:06Speaker 3: they kept putting the ball in play. And, you know,
- 4:09Speaker 3: the first inning, three errors by the Yankees, or two
- 4:11Speaker 3: or three errors. And the next, when they scored, it
- 4:14Speaker 3: was the 7th or the 8th, and they scored the 4th.
- 4:16Speaker 3: A couple errors by George Lombard. They just kept putting
- 4:20Speaker 3: the ball in play. Cam Schlitter normally strikes out a
- 4:22Speaker 3: ton of guys. The Rays put the ball in play.
- 4:23Speaker 3: They fouled off pitches. So the Rays deserve a ton
- 4:26Speaker 3: of credit. They put pressure on them from the jump, right?
- 4:29Speaker 3: But the Yankees' offense, though, they had the one chance
- 4:31Speaker 3: where Cody Bellinger hit the ball with the base load.
- 4:34Speaker 3: They brought in Boozer, hit the fly ball to center field,
- 4:36Speaker 3: and you could see on his face the frustration. But
- 4:38Speaker 3: other than Ben Rice, it hasn't been a very good offense.
- 4:40Speaker 3: It hasn't been a very deep offense in two games.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I mean, they got shut out. They got one hit
- 4:44Speaker 3: in the first game, and now the second game, the
- 4:46Speaker 3: two runs they scored around Ben Rice-Homers, it's been– It's
- 4:50Speaker 3: kind of been what their Achilles heel has been for
- 4:52Speaker 3: the last few years with the Yankees. Defense against the
- 4:54Speaker 3: Dodgers failed them. And then they just if they don't
- 4:57Speaker 3: hit enough home runs, they don't score because they can't
- 4:59Speaker 3: manufacture runs. Yes, I know they're more athletic. Yes, I
- 5:01Speaker 3: know they're faster with some of the guys, but they
- 5:03Speaker 3: don't do it enough. And that's not the game they
- 5:05Speaker 3: play to where they can win games like that. And
- 5:07Speaker 3: when you play a team like the Rays, they expose
- 5:09Speaker 3: that because they look at your weakness and say, all right,
- 5:11Speaker 3: we're going to try and do everything we can. to
- 5:14Speaker 3: make your weakness come out, and they've done it against
- 5:16Speaker 3: the Yankees in the first two games. Series isn't over
- 5:18Speaker 3: because you have Freed, Rodon, and you're going back to
- 5:19Speaker 3: Yankee Stadium, but.
- 5:20Speaker 2: It got a lot tougher. What a luxury to still
- 5:23Speaker 2: have Freed and Rodon. But it was a stark difference
- 5:27Speaker 2: of Freddie Peralta didn't get strikeouts, but they also didn't
- 5:32Speaker 2: put too many balls in play against them either. Freddie Peralta,
- 5:35Speaker 2: I think, had three strikeouts. The bullpen came in, did
- 5:38Speaker 2: their job. Yankees faltered a little bit, but it really
- 5:42Speaker 2: comes down to the defense. Can anybody make an error
- 5:45Speaker 2: at any time? Absolutely. Gold Glovers make errors. Platinum Glovers
- 5:49Speaker 2: make errors. But when the errors are nonsensical to me,
- 5:55Speaker 2: when they are just, what were you thinking in that moment?
- 5:59Speaker 2: You have to question, just in general, not how bad
- 6:05Speaker 2: do they want it, but are they willing to be
- 6:07Speaker 2: in uncomfortable spots? to make sure you're doing the basics
- 6:12Speaker 2: night in and night out because these are the games
- 6:15Speaker 2: where it comes to light when you don't score nine runs.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Does it seem though that this is something that would
- 6:21Speaker 1: have been addressed, AJ, after the 2024 World Series where
- 6:26Speaker 1: it seems like game five, particularly, or game four rather,
- 6:30Speaker 1: particularly in that fifth inning, they had all of these
- 6:33Speaker 1: fundamentally unsound mistakes They didn't seem to clean it up.
- 6:39Speaker 1: What's going on with the Yankees?
- 6:41Speaker 3: Well, they have the personnel that they have. Unless they're
- 6:44Speaker 3: going to make big moves and change the personnel, you can't.
- 6:46Speaker 3: I mean, Jazz has been there for a couple years, right?
- 6:49Speaker 3: They still have Grisham in center field. I mean, they
- 6:51Speaker 3: tried to clean it up, but, man, he made some errors.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Lombard's a rookie. They had Volpe there. They trust Lombard
- 6:56Speaker 3: more than they trust Volpe. I mean, I don't know
- 6:59Speaker 3: how you change it. They tried to make small changes, but,
- 7:02Speaker 3: you know, Jazz has been there for a couple years.
- 7:04Speaker 3: The outfield defense, Bellinger's pretty good out there. But, yeah,
- 7:08Speaker 3: they've tried. But unless they're going to just revamp the
- 7:11Speaker 3: whole team, it's not going to happen overnight. And they
- 7:13Speaker 3: work on it. People say, oh, they don't work on it.
- 7:15Speaker 3: They work on their defense just like every other team does.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Just some people are better at defense than others. And
- 7:20Speaker 3: in this game last night, it came out big time
- 7:22Speaker 3: that the Rays made all the plays and the Yankees
- 7:24Speaker 3: did it.
- 7:26Speaker 2: We said it before. What do the Rays build their
- 7:28Speaker 2: team on? Throwing the ball as hard as you freaking
- 7:31Speaker 2: can and hitting it as hard as you freaking can.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Not saying that you can't work on that stuff. Not
- 7:36Speaker 2: saying that the guys don't get out there and work.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I know who the old infield coordinator was, and then
- 7:41Speaker 2: he would work with these guys all the time. The
- 7:43Speaker 2: work is never an issue. It's just like saying, well,
- 7:48Speaker 2: I was really good at defense, but I couldn't hit.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Why don't you take more swings? It doesn't work like that.
- 7:54Speaker 2: So it's really in the analytical model of how you
- 7:58Speaker 2: build your team. What do you want? Do you want athleticism?
- 8:01Speaker 2: And I think the Yankees have pushed more towards athleticism.
- 8:05Speaker 2: But if you never go away from guys who I'm
- 8:08Speaker 2: willing to give up some defense because this dude's going
- 8:10Speaker 2: to pump us 25. I'm willing to give up on
- 8:13Speaker 2: this because, you know, he drives the ball in the gap,
- 8:17Speaker 2: whatever it is. They have to continue to change their model,
- 8:22Speaker 2: but it's hard to get away from the things that
- 8:24Speaker 2: they think and have made them get to the playoffs,
- 8:27Speaker 2: but they see them as absolutes on their team when
- 8:31Speaker 2: they're building a team. Football season is finally back and
- 8:35Speaker 2: Fabletics just teamed up with NFL's number one wide receiver,
- 8:39Speaker 2: Jamar Chase, on a new collection. It's got tees, it's
- 8:42Speaker 2: got hoodies, it's got baggy cargoes, and performance gear that
- 8:46Speaker 2: fits right into everything this season brings. From workouts and
- 8:49Speaker 2: travel to game day and everyday life, it's definitely worth
- 8:53Speaker 2: checking it out. It's fall. We're watching playoff baseball, but
- 8:57Speaker 2: I'm doing it in comfort. You know why? Because I'm
- 8:59Speaker 2: wearing this exact sweatshirt when it's a little warm outside,
- 9:03Speaker 2: but it's crisp and breezy. Nobody take my sweatshirt. That

- 9:33Speaker 2: everything as a new VIP.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Yeah, but they haven't won the World Series since 2009, right?
- 9:37Speaker 1: I mean, maybe the Yankees should add defensive metrics and
- 9:41Speaker 1: fundamental baseball metrics into their analytics formula. But AJ, is
- 9:45Speaker 1: it possible that I get that this team is built
- 9:48Speaker 1: to slug, but it doesn't mean that you can't also
- 9:51Speaker 1: learn or teach small ball? Why does it have to
- 9:54Speaker 1: be one or the other? Why can't it be both?
- 9:57Speaker 3: Well, it can be both. Those teams that win do both,
- 9:59Speaker 3: but Yankees aren't built like that. What did Crouch just say?
- 10:01Speaker 3: The Yankees want guys that hit the ball really hard
- 10:04Speaker 3: and they want guys that throw the ball really hard.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Those are their big analytics things that they believe in.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Whereas you look at a team like the Rays and
- 10:10Speaker 3: the Brewers who ended up with the best records in
- 10:12Speaker 3: both leagues, they find out what a guy player is
- 10:14Speaker 3: good at and they incorporate their strength into their team, right?
- 10:18Speaker 3: You look at a, Jackson Churio, he hits home runs
- 10:21Speaker 3: and he can put the ball in play. We saw
- 10:22Speaker 3: it against Mason Miller, right? You look at the Rays.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Yandy Diaz can do both. Jonathan Aranda can do both.
- 10:29Speaker 3: Liam Hicks, who they got at the trade deadline, can
- 10:30Speaker 3: do both. They can put the ball in play and drive.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Then they have Chandler Simpson hitting fifth, by the way,
- 10:35Speaker 3: in their lineup, who has no power, but he hits
- 10:38Speaker 3: over 300 and he puts a ton of pressure on
- 10:40Speaker 3: you when he comes up there. Is he going to bunt? Oh,
- 10:41Speaker 3: if he slaps the ball the other way and gets
- 10:43Speaker 3: on first, does it turn into a triple? So you
- 10:45Speaker 3: can incorporate both. But you have to have those kind
- 10:47Speaker 3: of players. You have to draft those kind of players,
- 10:49Speaker 3: and you have to develop those kind of players. And
- 10:52Speaker 3: if you just draft guys that are big, strong, and
- 10:53Speaker 3: want to hit homers, then that's what you end up
- 10:55Speaker 3: having on your big league team. That's fine. If that's
- 10:57Speaker 3: your philosophy, that's fine. I mean, the Indians, Guardians, did
- 11:01Speaker 3: it back in the 90s, and they had Manny and
- 11:03Speaker 3: Jim Tomey and all those guys that were sluggers. And
- 11:06Speaker 3: that was the way they were trying to win. They
- 11:07Speaker 3: were trying to out-slug you. Yes, Charles Nagy was nice,
- 11:09Speaker 3: and Oral Hershiser at the end of the career was nice. And,
- 11:11Speaker 3: you know, they made it to the World Series, but
- 11:13Speaker 3: they could never get over the hump because they played
- 11:14Speaker 3: teams that could do both. You have to be able
- 11:16Speaker 3: to do both. Yankees have just not over the last
- 11:19Speaker 3: couple of years been able to do the little things
- 11:21Speaker 3: to get them over the hump. And I don't know
- 11:23Speaker 3: if that can be taught or not. I'm sure fans
- 11:25Speaker 3: would say, oh, you can teach that stuff. It's really
- 11:27Speaker 3: hard to teach that stuff when you have veteran players
- 11:29Speaker 3: that have been around and done the thing for a
- 11:31Speaker 3: long time.
- 11:32Speaker 2: I think it's an expectation because we're talking about hitting
- 11:35Speaker 2: homers and throwing the ball hard. That is a very
- 11:38Speaker 2: generalized term. And I never want to put everything into
- 11:40Speaker 2: the same basket analytics. Like I think the Dodgers have
- 11:44Speaker 2: like two bunts for hits this year, where I think
- 11:48Speaker 2: the Rays might have like 20 some. So it's not
- 11:52Speaker 2: just bunting. It's not just not throwing the ball hard.
- 11:57Speaker 2: It's not just whatever it is. Like it can't be
- 11:59Speaker 2: just one thing. But I promise I've never seen Aaron
- 12:03Speaker 2: Judge put a bunt down. That's not what they're asking
- 12:06Speaker 2: him to do. But I saw him every single day
- 12:09Speaker 2: that we hit together in the same group, put one
- 12:12Speaker 2: or two bunts down in batting practice. And it may
- 12:16Speaker 2: have been a joke, like nobody's ever going to ask
- 12:19Speaker 2: him to bunt. I get that. But if that guy
- 12:22Speaker 2: does it, everybody needs to be able to do it.
- 12:24Speaker 2: And you need to be able to do little things
- 12:26Speaker 2: because Jackson Turio you brought up, he can put one
- 12:30Speaker 2: in the streets. But you know what? When you're facing
- 12:33Speaker 2: Mason Miller, he's not giving up a lot of dingers.
- 12:36Speaker 2: So he had to be able to change his swing
- 12:39Speaker 2: after he fouled two 102-mile-an-hour fastballs off straight back to
- 12:44Speaker 2: get on top. If those guys on this Yankees team
- 12:47Speaker 2: or whatever team's in the playoff aren't willing to make
- 12:49Speaker 2: the adjustment, if the Guardians aren't willing to swing for
- 12:52Speaker 2: the fences a little bit, then you're going to get cooked.
- 12:56Speaker 2: And they do– the Yankees do like defensive guys. Austin
- 12:59Speaker 2: Wells has kept his job in the entire year because
- 13:01Speaker 2: he's one of the best defensive catchers, according to their
- 13:04Speaker 2: analytical metrics, behind the dish.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Okay. First of all, you said two things that are crazy.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Aaron Judge is never going to bunt. If Aaron Judge bunt– Yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 3: so he can work on bunting all he wants. That's
- 13:16Speaker 3: not the point. Aaron Judge is a great hitter, and
- 13:18Speaker 3: he can hit the ball in the seats. That's what
- 13:20Speaker 3: he's there for, okay? But you have to have a–
- 13:22Speaker 3: the teams that have had the best record have a
- 13:25Speaker 3: mix of both, and it's the Brewers and the Rays.
- 13:26Speaker 3: And not every team is built that way. And by
- 13:28Speaker 3: the way, also I saw one time we had a
- 13:30Speaker 3: meeting when I was with the White Sox. Jim told
- 13:32Speaker 3: me it was on like 499 homers. Kenny Williams had
- 13:34Speaker 3: a meeting because he just saw Eric Hinsky bunt that
- 13:37Speaker 3: Jim told me he should bunt. We all kind of
- 13:39Speaker 3: laughed at him because what are we talking about here, right?
- 13:43Speaker 3: So no, there's certain, like me, I can bunt because
- 13:45Speaker 3: I could bunt for a hit with two outs in
- 13:47Speaker 3: the third baseman back and there's a runner on third.
- 13:50Speaker 3: I could steal an RBI, right? That was fine. I
- 13:52Speaker 3: had the ability, but I was also taught that from
- 13:54Speaker 3: a young age because I wasn't going to hit 50
- 13:56Speaker 3: homers a year. So I think it's, you have to
- 13:59Speaker 3: know your skillset. And I think certain teams are better
- 14:01Speaker 3: off finding more rounded skill sets, whereas other teams– and listen,
- 14:05Speaker 3: the Yankees have been great. They win every year. They
- 14:07Speaker 3: go to the playoffs every year. But they haven't won
- 14:09Speaker 3: it in almost 20 years now, 2009. And if you
- 14:12Speaker 3: look at that team, they had Johnny Damon on that team.
- 14:14Speaker 3: They had Derek Jeter. Those guys weren't home run guys. Yes,
- 14:17Speaker 3: you had A-Rod and Teixeira and some of the other guys,
- 14:19Speaker 3: but they also had guys that could do other things.
- 14:21Speaker 3: It wasn't just a strictly we're going to out-slug you
- 14:24Speaker 3: every day team.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Only 10 out of 91 teams, guys. That's just 11%
- 14:30Speaker 1: have recovered from an 0-2 deficit in a best-of-five series.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Blunder after blunder for the Yankees. The Tampa Bay Rays
- 14:37Speaker 1: continuing to put on the pressure, and they take a
- 14:40Speaker 1: 2-0 advantage as it goes back to New York. All right, guys,
- 14:44Speaker 1: our first guest is ready. Do not forget to check
- 14:46Speaker 1: out Pinstripe Territory with our friend Derek Lewandowski as the
- 14:50Speaker 1: Yankees try to salvage their season tomorrow. We're going to
- 14:53Speaker 1: take a quick break. We'll be right back. Tommy Pham
- 14:56Speaker 1: jokingly confronted Commissioner Rob Manfred about why a ball he
- 15:00Speaker 1: hit on Saturday wasn't a homer. This is per Jeff
- 15:03Speaker 1: Agrist on XFAM. Rob, what's going on with the balls? Manfred,
- 15:06Speaker 1: what balls? Pham, I can't be hitting no doubters, man,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and not helping them in getting out. How am I
- 15:11Speaker 1: supposed to get a job next year if that ball
- 15:14Speaker 1: don't go out? You got to love Tommy Pham. He's
- 15:16Speaker 1: a guy that you love on your team, AJ. A
- 15:18Speaker 1: guy that, you know, the opposition doesn't necessarily love him,
- 15:21Speaker 1: but he's a baller. He's a gamer. What do you
- 15:24Speaker 1: make of this?
- 15:25Speaker 3: I think it's funny. They still won the game. I
- 15:27Speaker 3: love Tommy. Tommy's nonstop. He's hardcore, man, when it comes
- 15:30Speaker 3: to caring and saying what he thinks. I watched that
- 15:33Speaker 3: game and it ended up being a double play. But
- 15:36Speaker 3: the White Sox won, so you know what, Tommy? I
- 15:37Speaker 3: love you, but who cares?
- 15:41Speaker 2: I used to have a pitching coach. He pitched in
- 15:43Speaker 2: the big leagues for a long time, Dave LaRoche, Adam
- 15:46Speaker 2: and Andy's dad. And he said, oh, that guy hit
- 15:50Speaker 2: that ball really good. He said, but he didn't catch
- 15:52Speaker 2: a seam. He'd say, that's what happens. When somebody hits
- 15:55Speaker 2: one really hard and it doesn't go out, didn't catch
- 15:57Speaker 2: a seam. You'll be able to tell. Go get me
- 15:59Speaker 2: that ball. And he would always get the ball and
- 16:01Speaker 2: be like, see, here's the flat spot. That ball, he
- 16:04Speaker 2: didn't catch a seam. So that's what I'll tell Tommy
- 16:07Speaker 2: next time I see him. Sorry, bro, you didn't catch
- 16:09Speaker 2: a seam. There's no way the balls are inconsistent. That
- 16:12Speaker 2: would never happen in Major League Baseball.
- 16:13Speaker 1: No, that would never, ever, ever happen. I love that, though,
- 16:17Speaker 1: on his Instagram post. How'd this ball not get out?
- 16:20Speaker 1: 106 exit velo at 31 degrees. Goes 366 feet with crosswind.
- 16:26Speaker 1: I hit a similar ball two weeks ago. It was
- 16:28Speaker 1: 420 feet. It was the wind. Must have been the wind, right?
- 16:30Speaker 1: Must have been the wind. It had nothing to do
- 16:33Speaker 1: with the seam there, AJ.
- 16:36Speaker 2: All right.
- 16:37Speaker 1: AJ is loving the White Sox right now. I'm loving
- 16:41Speaker 1: the White Sox right now.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Who's not loving the White Sox vibe?
- 16:44Speaker 1: Everybody.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Come on. Everybody. From the Pope. To the north side
- 16:51Speaker 3: of Chicago, everyone's loving the White Sox. This team is fun.
- 16:53Speaker 3: I said, you know, fun wins. Why can't fun win?
- 16:56Speaker 3: And they are fun as all get out and watch
- 16:58Speaker 3: their interviews, watch Murakami, watch Mike Vassell, watch this team.
- 17:01Speaker 3: They're having fun and they believe. And it is hard
- 17:03Speaker 3: to beat a team that believes and is having a
- 17:05Speaker 3: good time and getting big hits, getting big performances. Listen,
- 17:09Speaker 3: Will Venable has done an outstanding job with the openers
- 17:12Speaker 3: to the bullpen, to bringing in Sean Burke to shove.
- 17:16Speaker 3: You know, here's the thing. This is why I said
- 17:18Speaker 3: what I said earlier in the year that, if they
- 17:19Speaker 3: don't make the postseason to be a failure, because if
- 17:22Speaker 3: you look at the way the bracket lined up and
- 17:24Speaker 3: it's lined up that way, they had a pretty easy
- 17:26Speaker 3: shot to get to the ALCS with the two teams
- 17:29Speaker 3: they were playing. And here they are, one win away,
- 17:31Speaker 3: especially at home.
- 17:33Speaker 2: 2014 Royals looks very similar.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Hot Corner is presented by the Fox One app. We
- 17:46Speaker 1: appreciate the partnership, of course, with Fox One Milwaukee versus
- 17:51Speaker 1: San Diego, a city by many names, none that I
- 17:55Speaker 1: can repeat here on air. AJ is there. AJ is
- 17:59Speaker 1: doing the game, of course, on Fox. This should be
- 18:02Speaker 1: a good one, I think. And Ken Rosenthal, guys, talked
- 18:04Speaker 1: about it, too, on Fair Territory. He said of any
- 18:06Speaker 1: of the teams that are down right now in the series,
- 18:09Speaker 1: He has the most faith in the Padres being able
- 18:11Speaker 1: to recoup some things because of the fact they are
- 18:14Speaker 1: going back to Petco with that great fan base. AJ,
- 18:17Speaker 1: what are you looking forward to when you cover this
- 18:20Speaker 1: game tonight?
- 18:21Speaker 3: Well, the atmosphere obviously is going to be off the charts. Loud, crazy.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Then they need him. The one thing I worry about
- 18:29Speaker 3: with the Padres is they threw King, who's their best starter,
- 18:32Speaker 3: they lost. Morajon lost. Mason Miller lost. Those are like
- 18:35Speaker 3: their three dudes that they count on to win every
- 18:37Speaker 3: time those guys take the mound. And all three of
- 18:40Speaker 3: them basically in two games have not done what you
- 18:43Speaker 3: would expect them to do. How do they bounce back?
- 18:46Speaker 3: They need offense tonight. They need Manny Machado. They need
- 18:49Speaker 3: Fernando Tatis. They need Xander Bogarts. They need Jackson Merrill.
- 18:53Speaker 3: They need these guys to come through and get some
- 18:54Speaker 3: big hits for them. And then if you're the Brewers,
- 18:57Speaker 3: you just stay the course. You have You have Dustin
- 19:00Speaker 3: May pitching, who's had some success against the Padres. How
- 19:02Speaker 3: deep can Nick Babetta go for the Padres? Another question.
- 19:04Speaker 3: But you get, you know, Dustin May, three innings, four innings,
- 19:09Speaker 3: five innings, whatever he can give you. And then you
- 19:11Speaker 3: go to a bullpen for the Brewers. That's been great.
- 19:13Speaker 3: It's going to be, it's going to come down to
- 19:15Speaker 3: who gets the big hits. The first two games, honestly,
- 19:17Speaker 3: the Brewers got the big hits, took the walks when
- 19:20Speaker 3: they needed them. And the Padres haven't. That's been really
- 19:23Speaker 3: the story is that the Brewers have gotten more big
- 19:25Speaker 3: hits than the Padres. Can the Padres flip the script
- 19:27Speaker 3: at home? with their home crowd behind them, and get
- 19:30Speaker 3: the big hits. And they need Fernando and they need
- 19:32Speaker 3: Manny to step up big time.
- 19:35Speaker 2: AJ, you're in this series. You see this all. I mean,
- 19:39Speaker 2: you're so invested because you're calling this series. Do you
- 19:43Speaker 2: feel like what the Padres need is to face a
- 19:46Speaker 2: Matthew Boyd? Nothing against Matthew Boyd. Do you feel... like
- 19:50Speaker 2: the Padres lineup has been a little bit overmatched with
- 19:54Speaker 2: what the Brewers are able to run out there? Or
- 19:57Speaker 2: is it just the fact that, hey, you know what?
- 19:58Speaker 2: This has been a close series and it's flipped the
- 20:01Speaker 2: Brewers way both of first games.
- 20:05Speaker 3: No, I think they just need to get it. I mean, Listen,
- 20:09Speaker 3: nothing against Matthew Boyd, but they need to get a
- 20:11Speaker 3: big hit. They haven't gotten one. Jackson Chariot, huge hit, right,
- 20:14Speaker 3: in game two off Mason Miller. If he strikes out,
- 20:16Speaker 3: we're talking completely different, right, or if he hits a
- 20:18Speaker 3: pop-up or whatever. The first game, the Padres, I think,
- 20:21Speaker 3: left 12 guys on base. They had Fernando and Manny
- 20:24Speaker 3: up in a lot of those situations. They didn't get hits.
- 20:26Speaker 3: They didn't drive in the runs they needed to drive in.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Jackson Merrill didn't get any hits in the first game.
- 20:31Speaker 3: So I think– I don't know who they're facing. It
- 20:34Speaker 3: doesn't matter who they're facing because you're not facing terrible
- 20:36Speaker 3: pitching in the postseason. I just– I just, I don't
- 20:39Speaker 3: know how they figure it out. Maybe it's a home cooking.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Maybe it's relaxing at home. I don't know. I just,
- 20:45Speaker 3: I thought they'd be better because they came in here
- 20:47Speaker 3: so hot. And they honestly could be up 2-0 in
- 20:49Speaker 3: this series if not for some huge hits from the Brewers.
- 20:52Speaker 3: But man, they got to figure out a way to
- 20:54Speaker 3: get some hits with guys in scoring position because it
- 20:56Speaker 3: has been ugly for them.
- 20:58Speaker 6: Hi, Max the Bald Eagle from Marathon here. We asked
- 21:02Speaker 6: people if they could do an impression of me. Have
- 21:04Speaker 6: a listen.
- 21:17Speaker 3: You can save up to a dollar a gallon with
- 21:18Speaker 3: the Marathon Rewards app.
- 21:21Speaker 6: That last one was pretty good. Marathon, where fun runs
- 21:24Speaker 6: on full.

- 21:27Speaker 6: See MarathonRewards.com for details.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Guys, David Ortiz said it's over. I'm sorry. He does
- 21:35Speaker 1: not see the Padres overcoming an 0-2 deficit in the NLDS. Eric,
- 21:41Speaker 1: I'll start with you. Do you agree with Big Papi,
- 21:44Speaker 1: or do you think that the Brewers can make a
- 21:46Speaker 1: go at this? Excuse me, the Padres make a go
- 21:48Speaker 1: at this.
- 21:50Speaker 2: I don't agree at all. I mean, we have all
- 21:54Speaker 2: 2-0 series right now, and if you made me choose
- 21:57Speaker 2: which one because of what AJ said, like, This could
- 22:01Speaker 2: be a 2-0 series. If Maury Holm doesn't give up
- 22:03Speaker 2: an Apo Taco Homer to Contreras, this could be a
- 22:09Speaker 2: completely different script. I think this one could go 5.
- 22:13Speaker 2: I think they go home and they have an advantage
- 22:15Speaker 2: at home. the crowd, but they also have an advantage
- 22:23Speaker 2: because of the off day. They played the last game
- 22:26Speaker 2: without an off day. I'm not saying Mason Miller wouldn't
- 22:29Speaker 2: have pitched in that game or whatever. They may not
- 22:32Speaker 2: have needed him for two innings. Whatever it is, they
- 22:34Speaker 2: had an off day. Their superpower is that bullpen. Pavetta
- 22:38Speaker 2: gives them a little bit, but I think the Padres
- 22:41Speaker 2: are not done because of what they can do with
- 22:44Speaker 2: their lineup and their bullpen.
- 22:46Speaker 1: I don't think they're done either. Manny Machado, AJ, said
- 22:49Speaker 1: that he heard David Ortiz's comments when asked about him.
- 22:52Speaker 1: He said, those aren't the first comments that we've heard
- 22:54Speaker 1: about us this year. It's been all year from everyone.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Here we are once again with our backs against the wall.
- 22:58Speaker 1: We overcame it once, and we're going to do it again.
- 23:02Speaker 1: That's Manny Machado addressing the media regarding Big Papi's comments.
- 23:05Speaker 1: I mean, are the Padres underperforming? Are the Brewers overperforming, AJ?
- 23:11Speaker 1: Or is this just a Brewers team that we don't
- 23:14Speaker 1: give a lot of credit to?
- 23:17Speaker 3: No, I think both teams have performed, but like I said,
- 23:19Speaker 3: they beat the best. They beat Padres best two nights
- 23:22Speaker 3: in a row. They beat Marajon and they beat Mason Miller. They,
- 23:26Speaker 3: the Brewers are good. The Brewers, you don't win 103
- 23:28Speaker 3: games by accident in the national league. Okay. So the
- 23:31Speaker 3: Brewers are really good. They are really deep lineup. They
- 23:33Speaker 3: play the heck out of defense. They can really pitch.
- 23:35Speaker 3: I think some of their pitchers are underrated because you
- 23:37Speaker 3: don't know a lot of their names, especially coming out
- 23:40Speaker 3: of the bullpen, McGill, Abner, eBay, Ashby. They got a
- 23:43Speaker 3: bunch of dudes. They just run out that are pretty good. Um,
- 23:47Speaker 3: But as far as the Padres go, I don't think
- 23:49Speaker 3: this is over at all, man. I don't want it
- 23:50Speaker 3: to be over. I want this series to go five
- 23:51Speaker 3: and Mizorowski pitch game five again and see where it's at.
- 23:55Speaker 3: But yeah, I can't, I'm going to say this again.
- 23:57Speaker 3: I think the atmosphere in Petco tonight is going to
- 23:59Speaker 3: give the Padres a huge boost. And I think that's
- 24:02Speaker 3: not why it's over. If they win a game, then
- 24:05Speaker 3: I think they win game four. And then we go
- 24:07Speaker 3: back to Milwaukee. Now they could get swept and I
- 24:09Speaker 3: would be, I wouldn't be shocked either, but as far
- 24:11Speaker 3: as it being over, absolutely not. The Padres are going
- 24:13Speaker 3: to give them everything they've gotten. The birds better be
- 24:16Speaker 3: ready for it. They better not, rest on their laurels
- 24:18Speaker 3: because it could easily quickly flip and go back to
- 24:21Speaker 3: Milwaukee with everything in the line.
- 24:24Speaker 2: I think the, I think the best part of that
- 24:26Speaker 2: quote was left out on the tweet because he said,
- 24:29Speaker 2: the question was, do you have a comment about what
- 24:32Speaker 2: David Ortiz said? He said, I'm not commenting about what
- 24:35Speaker 2: somebody else says. And then he commented on it. So
- 24:38Speaker 2: I appreciate that for Manny, for a team that doesn't
- 24:40Speaker 2: talk a lot. I appreciate him. Nobody's counted them out.
- 24:44Speaker 2: I mean, maybe they've heard all the hate, This team
- 24:48Speaker 2: has been a really good team. Sorry, I don't think
- 24:51Speaker 2: anybody picked them to win the division. Like, that wasn't
- 24:54Speaker 2: going to happen. But I know I had them going
- 24:56Speaker 2: to the playoffs. I know I thought they were going
- 24:58Speaker 2: to be better than the Diamondbacks, better than the Giants,
- 25:03Speaker 2: who some people were like, ooh, the Giants could be something. Like,
- 25:07Speaker 2: I think they're a really good team that's been built
- 25:09Speaker 2: to be really good. And that's why I think this
- 25:11Speaker 2: series going to San Diego is much to watch.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I think it's funny that you were saying what Manny said.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I'm not going to comment it, but then he went
- 25:19Speaker 1: on and commented. But Craig Stammen, the manager of the Padres,
- 25:21Speaker 1: had kind of a funny quote as well. This from
- 25:23Speaker 1: Bob Nightingale on X. When asked if he second-guessed himself
- 25:26Speaker 1: on any decision in their two defeats in Milwaukee, I
- 25:29Speaker 1: never second-guessed myself. That's for everybody else to do. I
- 25:32Speaker 1: think that's a perfectly answered question in terms of that.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Because you're damned if you do. You're damned if you don't.
- 25:38Speaker 3: What are you second-guessing? Mason Merford, the ninth?
- 25:41Speaker 5: No.
- 25:42Speaker 3: He threw 12 pitches the first inning. No. Maury Holm
- 25:46Speaker 3: for two innings? He's done that all year. He's done
- 25:48Speaker 3: those two innings the entire year. I mean, could you say, oh,
- 25:51Speaker 3: they let Michael King go another inning? Well, he was
- 25:53Speaker 3: that third time through. He just hit the leadoff guy.
- 25:55Speaker 3: They know their team. They brought in Matt Sui. They
- 25:57Speaker 3: brought in Rodriguez. They did their job. They got him
- 26:00Speaker 3: to Mason Miller with the lead. There's not any second guessing.
- 26:04Speaker 3: He's done everything. The only thing I second guess, and
- 26:06Speaker 3: I said it on the air, is you don't take
- 26:08Speaker 3: your catcher out when you have a lead. I said that,
- 26:10Speaker 3: and I stand by it. You don't take your catcher out. Listen,
- 26:13Speaker 3: and you know what happened? and this is not a
- 26:14Speaker 3: knock on Firmino at all, but Camposano's spot came up
- 26:18Speaker 3: in a huge situation and Firmino hit into a double play.
- 26:22Speaker 3: And listen, it happens. I've done it. I've hit into
- 26:24Speaker 3: a double play a million times. But, man, Camposano's not
- 26:27Speaker 3: that bad. Is he crouched behind the plate? I mean,
- 26:29Speaker 3: is he that bad behind the plate that you're defensively
- 26:32Speaker 3: replacing him in a playoff game where he's led your
- 26:35Speaker 3: team through six or seven innings knowing exactly what to
- 26:37Speaker 3: call and how to get there?
- 26:39Speaker 2: That was probably the only forced part of the decision.
- 26:44Speaker 2: because hey you know what this is this was the
- 26:47Speaker 2: spot where we can do this because we have three
- 26:49Speaker 2: catchers we also have Salas on the roster but no
- 26:54Speaker 2: I mean we're nitpicking because of how it ended up
- 26:57Speaker 2: but that's the reality of this situation and just because
- 27:01Speaker 2: Stammen says oh I'm not second guessing this it doesn't
- 27:05Speaker 2: mean he didn't like think about it I'm sure he
- 27:07Speaker 2: thought about the fact that Mason Miller is not landing
- 27:10Speaker 2: that breaking ball. Why did he walk these guys? What
- 27:13Speaker 2: are the decisions? Why are we calling these pitches that,
- 27:16Speaker 2: you know what, a home run is the only thing
- 27:18Speaker 2: that beats us. And I think Mason Miller gave up
- 27:21Speaker 2: just a few of those all season. So, you know,
- 27:25Speaker 2: I don't think second guessing is the same as contemplating
- 27:30Speaker 2: the decisions you make. And in the playoffs, he will
- 27:33Speaker 2: always know this. He will always think about it. I'm
- 27:35Speaker 2: sure AJ made some bad decisions in the playoffs. I remember.
- 27:39Speaker 2: I called a four-seam fastball up and in to Cody
- 27:44Speaker 2: Bellinger in 2018. Jolies Chastin shook and went with a sinker,
- 27:50Speaker 2: and I was like, sure. I second-guessed myself. I'm like,
- 27:54Speaker 2: should I have said, no, we're going four-seamer? Because in
- 27:57Speaker 2: the next pitch, started where the four-seamer was going to,
- 28:00Speaker 2: broke back on the plate, and Cody hit a dinger
- 28:02Speaker 2: in game seven. So is that second-guessing, or is that
- 28:04Speaker 2: just saying, you know what, it didn't go well? Should
- 28:07Speaker 2: I have done something different?
- 28:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Like you said, hindsight's always 20, 20, but I'm running
- 28:13Speaker 1: Mason Miller out there and more hone out there. Every
- 28:15Speaker 1: chance I get, every chance I get, I'm twice.
- 28:20Speaker 2: If I got a chance to do it twice. Amen. Exactly. Exactly.
- 28:27Speaker 5: Right.
- 28:28Speaker 1: And they'll be on Fox is streaming on Fox one.

- 28:56Speaker 1: a game they want to get tickets for tonight or
- 28:58Speaker 1: tomorrow from our friends at SeatGeek. Use TERRITORY10 for 10%
- 29:03Speaker 1: off tickets at SeatGeek. All right, Eric, I'll start with you.
- 29:06Speaker 1: What is a game that you are purchasing tickets for
- 29:09Speaker 1: either for tonight? We already know where AJ is going
- 29:11Speaker 1: to be, but what game are you trying to buy
- 29:14Speaker 1: tickets for tonight or tomorrow?
- 29:15Speaker 2: Shocker. AJ doesn't need to buy tickets because he's got
- 29:17Speaker 2: a gold card and he uses it every time he
- 29:20Speaker 2: goes into every stadium. But no, I have, I have,
- 29:23Speaker 2: it's not even a night game. It's a four o'clock game.
- 29:26Speaker 2: So the shadows are going to be kind of tough
- 29:28Speaker 2: in Chicago. But like, I'm getting chills thinking about like,
- 29:32Speaker 2: almost like a Premier League soccer environment in Chicago. So
- 29:37Speaker 2: I have to see the– well, it's going to probably
- 29:40Speaker 2: be just a meh game because it's going to be
- 29:41Speaker 2: bullpens and not much hitting from the Guardians. I have
- 29:45Speaker 2: to see the environment in playoff baseball in Chicago because
- 29:51Speaker 2: they're starved for it. I hope they do the blackout.
- 29:55Speaker 2: I hope they do some kind of, like, Norway, like–
- 29:59Speaker 2: As they're like, as they're, I don't know, something like
- 30:01Speaker 2: I want to be there. So that's where I'm buying
- 30:03Speaker 2: tickets for.
- 30:04Speaker 1: All right. Big World Cup fan. This Eric Kratz is.
- 30:07Speaker 3: I don't need to buy tickets to go there, Kratzy.
- 30:09Speaker 3: I don't need to buy tickets.
- 30:10Speaker 2: You don't need to buy tickets anywhere. You've never bought
- 30:12Speaker 2: a ticket to a baseball game because you have your
- 30:14Speaker 2: gold card and your gold card's almost worn out. You
- 30:17Speaker 2: use it so much.
- 30:18Speaker 3: I don't even know where my gold card is. I
- 30:19Speaker 3: had to go find it once people started showing their off.
- 30:22Speaker 3: I tell you what, the only thing I'm upset a
- 30:24Speaker 3: lot about the White Sox game. It's just a day game.
- 30:27Speaker 3: So a blackout's not going to have the same effect
- 30:31Speaker 3: as it does at night. I wish they were– they
- 30:35Speaker 3: do blackouts in Chicago, and I get it. I just–
- 30:37Speaker 3: I wish it was a night game.
- 30:39Speaker 2: I do.
- 30:39Speaker 3: I wish it was a night game so that it
- 30:41Speaker 3: would be– it's way cooler. I played in the original
- 30:44Speaker 3: blackout in 2008. The one game playoff we did, and
- 30:46Speaker 3: it was the coolest atmosphere ever. I was at the
- 30:48Speaker 3: one they did in the 2021, and it was a
- 30:51Speaker 3: night game, right? And it's way better. So it stinks
- 30:54Speaker 3: that it's a four o'clock game. It stinks that it's
- 30:55Speaker 3: in the middle of the day because it doesn't have
- 30:57Speaker 3: the same effect. But White Sox fans are going to
- 30:59Speaker 3: be going berserk. They haven't had a chance to win
- 31:02Speaker 3: a series at home since 1906. So be there.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh.
- 31:07Speaker 1: This game is just fun. I don't care who you
- 31:09Speaker 1: root for. This team is a blast to watch. Of course,
- 31:11Speaker 1: you guys, we have a code for you. You can
- 31:13Speaker 1: use code territory 10 for 10 percent off your next
- 31:15Speaker 1: set of tickets at Seat Geek. That's 10% off any tickets.
- 31:19Speaker 1: It doesn't even have to be baseball. With promo code TERRITORY10,
- 31:22Speaker 1: make sure you click the link in the description to
- 31:24Speaker 1: download the app and have the code automatically added to
- 31:28Speaker 1: your account so you can use it later. Dave Roberts
- 31:31Speaker 1: on Shohei Ohtani struggles at the plate. He can still
- 31:34Speaker 1: do a better job of staying in the strike zone.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Roberts says the Braves will pitch Ohtani outstripe the strike zone.
- 31:41Speaker 1: A lot going on with him, you guys, as far
- 31:42Speaker 1: as Shohei Otani is concerned. He has not had an
- 31:44Speaker 1: RBI since August 19th. He hasn't had a home run
- 31:47Speaker 1: since August 18th. Obviously, you're not going to sit Shohei Otani, AJ.
- 31:53Speaker 1: But something's got to give here with this Dodgers offense.
- 31:55Speaker 1: It's not all Shohei. The offense in general is pretty lethargic.
- 32:00Speaker 1: But it seems like Shohei is chasing outside of the
- 32:02Speaker 1: zone a lot more than he is accustomed to.
- 32:05Speaker 3: He is because he's anxious. He's trying too hard. And
- 32:08Speaker 3: there was one guy who's been doing good. It's our
- 32:10Speaker 3: boy Max Muncy. He's been raking. He stays in the
- 32:13Speaker 3: strike zone. Max and Freddie have been the two that
- 32:15Speaker 3: have been doing all right. They stay inside the strike zone.
- 32:17Speaker 3: So you've got to figure out a way to get
- 32:19Speaker 3: in the strike zone. And once teams find out you
- 32:21Speaker 3: won't stay in the strike zone, especially in the postseason,
- 32:23Speaker 3: you don't see a lot of strikes. And Shohei needs
- 32:25Speaker 3: to tighten it up, get in the strike zone. But
- 32:28Speaker 3: he's got a tough hombre on the mound tonight. If
- 32:30Speaker 3: you ain't seen Chris Sale pitch, he's pretty decent.
- 32:34Speaker 2: And Shohei– wait, Max didn't start, so– Max is one
- 32:38Speaker 2: of their better hitters, and Max didn't even start the
- 32:40Speaker 2: other night. This is a tough matchup for Shohei. I mean,
- 32:45Speaker 2: if the boys want Shohei to do well, I think
- 32:47Speaker 2: you've got to knock Chris Sale out of the game somehow,
- 32:49Speaker 2: but Chris Sale just doesn't get knocked out of the
- 32:51Speaker 2: game because Shohei is something about like a 37-degree angle
- 32:57Speaker 2: or lower from lefties. He has just ridiculously poor numbers.
- 33:01Speaker 2: It's such a general thing I just said, but that's
- 33:04Speaker 2: how the Phillies– subdued Shohei last year because they threw Sanchez,
- 33:11Speaker 2: Ranger Suarez, and Jesus Lizardo, I'm pretty sure. But it was,
- 33:17Speaker 2: you know, that, that was how they, that's how they
- 33:19Speaker 2: neutralize Shohei. And it'll be tough tonight, but Shohei will
- 33:22Speaker 2: be fine. Like you're not taking Shohei out.
- 33:24Speaker 3: By the way, no lefties hit those guys. Cracks just FYI.
- 33:27Speaker 3: No lefties hit 30 or lower, whatever the angle is.
- 33:31Speaker 3: Cause you know what? Those guys are usually pretty good
- 33:32Speaker 3: and you don't see a whole heck of a lot
- 33:34Speaker 3: of them. So when you get that lefty, that's, Especially
- 33:36Speaker 3: Chris Sale is like Randy Johnson. Let's just don't hit him.
- 33:39Speaker 3: Maybe Sid Shohei, Alana.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Say it.
- 33:41Speaker 3: I dare you to say Sid Shohei.
- 33:43Speaker 2: She'll never. Sid Shohei.
- 33:44Speaker 7: Sid Shohei.
- 33:44Speaker 2: She'll never.
- 33:45Speaker 6: That was AI.
- 33:47Speaker 2: That was AI. It wasn't Alana.
- 34:04Speaker 1: We want to welcome our friend CJ Nikowski to the show.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Braves analyst, of course, longtime Braves guy. Good to see you, CJ.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Thanks for being here. A good one tonight as far
- 34:14Speaker 1: as the pitching matchup is concerned. It is Chris Sale,
- 34:17Speaker 1: the veteran going up against the reigning World Series MVP
- 34:21Speaker 1: and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. What are you looking forward to the most?
- 34:25Speaker 8: Well, it's going to be a great pitching matchup. Looking
- 34:27Speaker 8: forward probably most to the crowd. We know it's going
- 34:30Speaker 8: to be a great atmosphere at Truist as well. You know,
- 34:32Speaker 8: these two guys went head to head I guess it
- 34:34Speaker 8: was back in August, and Chris Sale threw a complete
- 34:36Speaker 8: game shutout the first time he had done that in
- 34:38Speaker 8: about eight years. It was a 1-0 final. Yamamoto threw well.
- 34:42Speaker 8: The only run that was scored, the first battery face,
- 34:44Speaker 8: was Drake Baldwin. He hit a homer, and that was it.
- 34:47Speaker 8: 1-0 final. So we take a game similar to that
- 34:49Speaker 8: if we could here tonight. But there's a lot to
- 34:52Speaker 8: look forward to. Obviously, it's a big deal. You split
- 34:54Speaker 8: out in L.A., and now it becomes a three-game series
- 34:56Speaker 8: with a couple of aces on the mound. It feels
- 34:58Speaker 8: like you're facing an ace every night with the Dodgers,
- 35:01Speaker 8: but for the Atlanta Braves, they have one true ace,
- 35:03Speaker 8: and that's Chris Sale.
- 35:05Speaker 3: CJ, I'm just going to let you and Alana argue
- 35:06Speaker 3: back and forth for the next 10 minutes. So Kratz
- 35:09Speaker 3: and I are just going to sit out. I called.
- 35:12Speaker 3: You took the Chris Sale-Yamamoto game off. I called. It
- 35:15Speaker 3: was one of the great pitching matchups I've ever seen.
- 35:17Speaker 3: First pitch of the game, splitter to Drake Baldwin. Home run.
- 35:21Speaker 3: That was it. Chris Sale dominated for the rest of
- 35:23Speaker 3: the game. Now you and Alana can argue. So go ahead, Alana.
- 35:25Speaker 3: You guys argue over why the Dodgers and the Braves
- 35:27Speaker 3: are Going to have a great game. Go ahead, Alana.
- 35:31Speaker 1: I do think it's going to be a very good
- 35:34Speaker 1: game today. All right, I'll ask you this, CJ. The
- 35:37Speaker 1: Braves beat the Dodgers if?
- 35:41Speaker 8: Well, they got to do all the little things right.
- 35:42Speaker 8: They got to be able to take advantage of mistakes, right?
- 35:44Speaker 8: AJ talked about that one split that sat in the
- 35:46Speaker 8: middle of the plate, and that was it, and ended
- 35:49Speaker 8: up being the difference in the game. We've seen enough now, right?
- 35:51Speaker 8: Postseason games, we understand what happens. It's those biggest moments.
- 35:55Speaker 8: It's executing the little things. You saw what a disaster
- 35:57Speaker 8: that first inning was yesterday for the New York Yankees.
- 36:00Speaker 8: Those kinds of things can't afford to happen. Now, the Braves'
- 36:03Speaker 8: defense has been really good, but you just never know
- 36:06Speaker 8: what can ultimately show up in a postseason game. I
- 36:08Speaker 8: think when you have two pitchers like this, you expect
- 36:11Speaker 8: it to be a really tight game. And we never
- 36:13Speaker 8: know what that one thing or two things are going
- 36:16Speaker 8: to be over a course of a game, whether it's
- 36:18Speaker 8: Yamamoto making a mistake, whether it's the Braves doing a
- 36:21Speaker 8: good job of driving up His pitch count and trying
- 36:23Speaker 8: to get to the bullpen, which struggled in game two
- 36:25Speaker 8: against the Atlanta Braves, right? You just never know what
- 36:28Speaker 8: it's going to be, but it feels like that this
- 36:30Speaker 8: should be a tight one. Now, is the possibility of
- 36:32Speaker 8: either one of these starters laying an egg out there?
- 36:34Speaker 6: Maybe.
- 36:35Speaker 8: It feels like a really small percentage in that happening.
- 36:37Speaker 8: So it is something I do think for both of
- 36:40Speaker 8: these teams, right? There's names that run deep in both
- 36:42Speaker 8: of the lineups, which makes it exciting, right? I think
- 36:45Speaker 8: Austin Riley just saw his batting eighth in this lineup
- 36:48Speaker 8: here tonight. We know he's capable of doing damage. He's
- 36:50Speaker 8: already had a big postseason moment. And you get the
- 36:52Speaker 8: same thing with the Los Angeles Dodgers to some degree.
- 36:55Speaker 6: So I don't know. It's hard to say. Something will happen.
- 36:57Speaker 6: We know that. We just have no idea where and
- 36:59Speaker 6: who it's going to be.
- 37:01Speaker 2: You heard it here first. Something will happen. C.J. Nikowski.
- 37:04Speaker 3: Love that.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Chris Sale, you just said, I mean, he's their ace.
- 37:09Speaker 2: Walt Weiss made it incredible. In my opinion, I've praised
- 37:11Speaker 2: him ever since he did it, leaving Didier Fuentes in.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Probably two innings longer than any analytical manager will. Is
- 37:19Speaker 2: Walt Weiss going to have a really tough decision pulling
- 37:23Speaker 2: Chris Sale whenever he pulls him because of the fact
- 37:27Speaker 2: that so much is riding on how Chris Sale does
- 37:30Speaker 2: and looking down at that pen, which is really good,
- 37:33Speaker 2: you probably don't have a better option than Chris Sale.
- 37:37Speaker 8: Well, I mean, if he starts to struggle, right, obviously
- 37:40Speaker 8: outside of him pitching the whole game, you're expecting that
- 37:42Speaker 8: there'll be a pitching change at some point. I think
- 37:44Speaker 8: the one thing with Walt is that he has been
- 37:46Speaker 8: very aggressive in the decisions he's But he also trusts
- 37:49Speaker 8: his eyeballs. You know, that's the one thing that's been
- 37:51Speaker 8: really refreshing here in Atlanta compared to, I think, what
- 37:54Speaker 8: you kind of alluded to and some of the other
- 37:56Speaker 8: managers around the league that have their hands tied to
- 37:59Speaker 8: some degree. And they certainly have a game plan going in.
- 38:01Speaker 8: I think you're absolutely right. The game plan probably at
- 38:03Speaker 8: that point in that Dodger game, too, was that Didier
- 38:06Speaker 8: Fuentes was going to give you two and Iglesias maybe two.
- 38:09Speaker 8: But you're looking at a guy that's locked in and
- 38:11Speaker 8: throwing the baseball well, and Walt decides to ride that out.
- 38:14Speaker 8: So I think it's the same thing here with Chris Sale.
- 38:16Speaker 8: But he's been really good at picking the moments, understanding
- 38:19Speaker 8: when there's an opportunity to win a baseball game. He
- 38:22Speaker 8: always seems to be a batter ahead as opposed to
- 38:25Speaker 8: a batter behind when it comes to making a decision when.
- 38:28Speaker 6: You've got to go to the bullpen.
- 38:29Speaker 8: And Chris Sale, they were such a good relationship there,
- 38:31Speaker 8: and I know AJ knows him better than any of us.
- 38:34Speaker 8: talking about him, but the respect that he has for
- 38:37Speaker 8: Walt Weiss and any decisions he makes, he's going to
- 38:39Speaker 8: back him up. He's going to go with it. There's
- 38:41Speaker 8: not going to be any drama there. There hasn't been.
- 38:44Speaker 8: Walt has done it all year. Chris Sale has done
- 38:46Speaker 8: it all year. When the time is right for Walt
- 38:48Speaker 8: to go out and get him, listen, again, it'd be
- 38:50Speaker 8: great if we got nine innings out of him, but
- 38:52Speaker 8: that's a really difficult thing to do against this lineup
- 38:54Speaker 8: in the postseason, and I don't think there'll be much
- 38:56Speaker 8: drama behind it.
- 38:58Speaker 3: CJ, let's hit the offense with the Braves real quick.
- 39:01Speaker 3: What do they have to do against Yamamoto? He's, listen,
- 39:03Speaker 3: he's as tough as they come. He's, he's got the
- 39:05Speaker 3: pedigree of the post season, everything he's done in the
- 39:08Speaker 3: post season. Again, last time he pitched against the Braves,
- 39:10Speaker 3: he made one mistake and he pitched really well. What
- 39:12Speaker 3: do they have to do to get to him? They
- 39:14Speaker 3: got to Blake Snell. They fouled off a ton of pitches.
- 39:16Speaker 3: They put the pressure on him, right? How did they
- 39:18Speaker 3: get to Yamamoto and get him out of the game?
- 39:21Speaker 3: Because let's be honest, you got to get to the
- 39:23Speaker 3: Dodger bullpen as fast as possible. Yeah.
- 39:26Speaker 8: I think, you know, your odds of driving up that
- 39:28Speaker 8: pitch count are going to put you in the best
- 39:29Speaker 8: position possible, right? I think with Snell, they did a
- 39:32Speaker 8: really good job of showing some patience, which is not
- 39:35Speaker 8: the MO of this offense, right?
- 39:36Speaker 6: These guys are out there hacking.
- 39:37Speaker 8: You look at some of the really important pieces of
- 39:40Speaker 8: the Atlanta Braves lineup, and you're going to see some
- 39:42Speaker 8: really high chase rates. Michael Harris is very well aware
- 39:44Speaker 8: of the fact that he is up over 40% with
- 39:47Speaker 8: the chase, but at times it works out well for him.
- 39:49Speaker 8: In that game against the Philadelphia Phillies after Aaron Ola
- 39:52Speaker 8: walked two, Michael Harris gets ahead in the count 2-0
- 39:55Speaker 8: and swings at a pitch that's below the zone.
- 39:56Speaker 6: It would have been ball three. Instead, he hit it
- 39:58Speaker 6: into the chop house in right field, right?
- 39:59Speaker 8: So I think understanding where you can go outside of
- 40:02Speaker 8: the strike zone against Yamamoto, he certainly has great movement.
- 40:05Speaker 8: He does a nice job of getting ahead and then
- 40:06Speaker 8: trying to get chase. I think any early chase obviously
- 40:09Speaker 8: is something in any situation that you.
- 40:10Speaker 6: Would like to avoid.
- 40:11Speaker 8: Can you find a way to get that pitch count
- 40:13Speaker 8: up for a guy who's been so good in the postseason?
- 40:16Speaker 8: He clearly knows what he's doing. He's not going to
- 40:18Speaker 8: be intimidated by by any atmosphere. So it feels like
- 40:21Speaker 8: that would be a key, right? And it seems so
- 40:23Speaker 8: simple and it's not when you're facing a pitcher of
- 40:25Speaker 8: this caliber, but taking advantage of anything that's in the
- 40:29Speaker 8: zone that might look like a mistake. It was one
- 40:31Speaker 8: pitch and one time in that last game. And again,
- 40:34Speaker 8: it maybe is just a couple of moments where those
- 40:35Speaker 8: opportunities are there and you hope that for the Atlanta Braves,
- 40:38Speaker 8: they don't miss them.
- 40:39Speaker 1: CJ, I don't care who it is that anybody is
- 40:41Speaker 1: rooting for. You have to absolutely love the story that
- 40:44Speaker 1: has become Ray Kerr. Jared Diamond of the Wall Street
- 40:47Speaker 1: Journal has a beautiful article about how he was living
- 40:50Speaker 1: in a tent in his grandmother's backyard. One day his
- 40:52Speaker 1: father woke him and his brother up. They kind of
- 40:55Speaker 1: left and went to Reno. They fled there. Then he
- 40:58Speaker 1: ended up in foster care. He's working at 7-Eleven. He
- 41:02Speaker 1: gets $ 2, 000. And now he's a breakout star this postseason.
- 41:06Speaker 1: This is a guy you root for. It's a beautiful story.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Tell us more about this young man that you've had
- 41:11Speaker 1: the pleasure of getting to know more than us.
- 41:13Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, he only pitched in nine games, right,
- 41:15Speaker 8: in the regular season. We saw him a couple of
- 41:17Speaker 8: years ago, and then he had Tommy John surgery. And
- 41:19Speaker 8: so he missed significant time, about a year and a half,
- 41:22Speaker 8: like most do when they have that surgery. And you've
- 41:25Speaker 8: picked up on it now because I think the rest
- 41:26Speaker 8: of the country now is seeing these interviews and see
- 41:28Speaker 8: the way that he handles himself, and that's not fake.
- 41:31Speaker 8: It's always been like that for Ray Kerr.
- 41:33Speaker 6: He takes it as it comes.
- 41:35Speaker 8: I think he has a completely different perspective maybe than most.
- 41:38Speaker 6: You sit there and.
- 41:39Speaker 8: Wonder sometimes, okay, well, that first one went really well.
- 41:42Speaker 8: The way he pitched in the regular season, it was
- 41:44Speaker 8: the same kind of thing as if I'm going to
- 41:45Speaker 8: go at guys and let's see what happens. I've had
- 41:47Speaker 8: bigger challenges in life than just worrying about trying to
- 41:50Speaker 8: get big league hitters out. But it has held so
- 41:52Speaker 8: far through two really big postseason starts kind of slash
- 41:55Speaker 8: openers where you're not expecting five innings.
- 41:57Speaker 6: But he has attacked hitters.
- 41:58Speaker 8: It doesn't matter if it's been the Philadelphia Phillies or
- 42:01Speaker 8: the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 42:02Speaker 6: It's been really fun to watch, right?
- 42:04Speaker 8: There's a free and easiness to what Raker does, the
- 42:07Speaker 8: way that he lives his life and the way that
- 42:08Speaker 8: he attacks the biggest moments.
- 42:10Speaker 6: And he enjoyed it, right?
- 42:11Speaker 8: I mean, that home game that we had in that
- 42:12Speaker 8: game three wildcard, then we came off the mound and
- 42:15Speaker 8: waving to the fans and doing the chop and everything.
- 42:17Speaker 8: He is completely freed up, I think, because of his
- 42:20Speaker 8: life circumstances, because of the background. You know, I'm almost
- 42:23Speaker 8: envious of it in some degree.
- 42:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 42:25Speaker 8: When the idea for a guy who was an overthinker
- 42:27Speaker 8: throughout his career to see somebody just so completely freed
- 42:30Speaker 8: up and have great perspective on how to handle the
- 42:33Speaker 8: biggest moments. It's been an absolute joy and a lot
- 42:35Speaker 8: of fun to watch him.
- 42:36Speaker 3: That's so cool.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Is Ronald Acuna Jr. OK? When I watch him run,
- 42:41Speaker 2: you've seen him the whole year. is there a limp?
- 42:45Speaker 2: Is there something with his swing? Are they pitching around
- 42:47Speaker 2: him and he wants to do too much? Because historically,
- 42:51Speaker 2: the last few postseasons, and they won the World Series
- 42:53Speaker 2: without him, his numbers haven't been that great. But is
- 42:57Speaker 2: he okay?
- 42:59Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, you know, what's interesting with Ronald with
- 43:01Speaker 8: all the lower body issues that he has had, there
- 43:02Speaker 8: are times during the regular season where you see him
- 43:05Speaker 8: moving and you get a little bit concerned. And then
- 43:07Speaker 8: you see him turn it on, you're like, okay, he's fine.
- 43:09Speaker 8: I think for Ronald, he understands the moments, right? Because
- 43:12Speaker 8: of the multiple injuries that he's had with his lower half,
- 43:15Speaker 8: that if the moment does not call for over-the-top hustle,
- 43:19Speaker 8: he's been smart about not doing it. This is a
- 43:21Speaker 8: guy who is happiest in his life when he's in
- 43:22Speaker 8: between the lines. He loves playing baseball as much as
- 43:25Speaker 8: anybody that I have ever been around. But I do
- 43:27Speaker 8: think he's become a little bit smarter as things have
- 43:29Speaker 8: gone on here. And if he needs to let it fly,
- 43:32Speaker 8: to take away their phrase here for the postseason, he will.
- 43:35Speaker 6: He's been okay in the postseason. He hasn't been the.
- 43:37Speaker 8: Superstar yet, but we feel like his moment here in
- 43:40Speaker 8: Atlanta is coming soon.
- 43:41Speaker 6: Sooner than later. We know he wants it as much
- 43:43Speaker 6: as anybody.
- 43:43Speaker 8: I think the thing that I've been impressed with him
- 43:45Speaker 8: because of that, he's not necessarily become a guy who's
- 43:48Speaker 8: pressing either. There are times you're watching at bats and
- 43:51Speaker 8: you know he wants to do something big and you're thinking, man,
- 43:53Speaker 8: he's going to chase here, and he doesn't. He's been
- 43:55Speaker 8: under control. It hasn't happened for him just yet, but
- 43:58Speaker 8: that's the nice thing about this roster. You're not relying
- 44:00Speaker 8: on one or two guys. It runs really deep. You're
- 44:02Speaker 8: getting pitched, of course, as tough as you ever have been,
- 44:04Speaker 8: as carefully as you can be here in the postseason.
- 44:07Speaker 8: But no, nobody's worried about the health of Ronald Acuna Jr.
- 44:10Speaker 8: 's ability to put up big moments here in the postseason.
- 44:13Speaker 8: I think they'll still happen for him.
- 44:16Speaker 3: CJ, Freddie Freeman coming back, Atlanta. Good ovation. It's the
- 44:22Speaker 3: playoffs now. I know during the regular season, he always
- 44:24Speaker 3: gets a nice ovation. Playoffs, will it be the same
- 44:27Speaker 3: ovation that he's gotten in the regular season?
- 44:29Speaker 6: Yeah, we'll see.
- 44:30Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 44:31Speaker 6: I feel like everyone's kind of over it, right? It's
- 44:32Speaker 6: been a while now.
- 44:33Speaker 8: The whole Matt Olsen thing, he's just been terrific here Um,
- 44:37Speaker 8: that's the least of the concerns when you just kind
- 44:38Speaker 8: of think about, um, moves that were made over the years,
- 44:41Speaker 8: he certainly is always going to be appreciated here. Um,
- 44:44Speaker 8: but at the same time, like you have your guy
- 44:46Speaker 8: who's doing an unbelievable job. Now I think of anything,
- 44:48Speaker 8: they're probably not thrilled that he hit that home run
- 44:50Speaker 8: against Grant Holmes, um, that we saw in game two
- 44:53Speaker 8: and he'd been, he'd been ice cold, right? I mean,
- 44:54Speaker 8: Freddie had not been doing about well at all. He
- 44:56Speaker 8: hadn't a home run in a while.
- 44:57Speaker 6: Um, but no, I don't think it's going to be,
- 44:59Speaker 6: it's certainly not going to be over the top.
- 45:00Speaker 8: I can't imagine he's going to step out of the
- 45:02Speaker 8: batter's box and, and tip his cap. It doesn't feel
- 45:04Speaker 8: like it'd be that kind of moment because quite honestly,
- 45:06Speaker 8: every brace fan who's going to be in the ballpark tonight,
- 45:09Speaker 8: who likes him and appreciates him would really love to
- 45:12Speaker 8: see him fail tonight. So I just don't think it's
- 45:13Speaker 8: going to be, um, much of an ovation at this point.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Has the fact that the, whatever it was, one o'clock
- 45:20Speaker 2: or two o'clock games that weren't sold out in Atlanta,
- 45:24Speaker 2: because people have jobs been too blown up in the
- 45:27Speaker 2: national media. And will it be completely packed to the
- 45:31Speaker 2: brim in Atlanta?
- 45:34Speaker 6: It will be.
- 45:34Speaker 8: So two o'clock games that we had the first two
- 45:36Speaker 8: worked out really nice that in game three, we were
- 45:38Speaker 8: the only game and they sold out immediately.
- 45:40Speaker 3: Right.
- 45:41Speaker 8: As soon as that game got pushed back to eight
- 45:42Speaker 8: o'clock and we didn't know until one o'clock in the
- 45:44Speaker 8: morning when the San Diego Padres finished up their game,
- 45:47Speaker 8: the game was immediately sold out. You know, it's unfortunate
- 45:50Speaker 8: with game times. We all know how kind of television works.
- 45:52Speaker 8: I think we'd all like to see the NCAA format.
- 45:54Speaker 8: It's OK to have multiple games going on at the
- 45:57Speaker 8: same time, but it is what it is. And that's
- 45:59Speaker 8: the way television works. and MLB kind of lay things out. But, yeah,
- 46:02Speaker 8: it'll be a good crowd. Obviously, 6 o'clock is a
- 46:04Speaker 8: little bit different tonight, so you can leave work just
- 46:06Speaker 8: a little bit earlier or hustle to get there if
- 46:08Speaker 8: you're getting.
- 46:09Speaker 6: Off at 5 o'clock. But, yes, it'll be sold out today.
- 46:12Speaker 8: I did see standing room only tickets were all that
- 46:14Speaker 8: were left at this point. It's going to be a
- 46:15Speaker 8: great atmosphere. How could it not be, right? Chris Sale, Yamamoto,
- 46:20Speaker 8: series tied at one. It's the Dodgers, right? They're kind
- 46:22Speaker 8: of the evil empire right now. So there are zero concerns.
- 46:25Speaker 8: They will come out and watch playoff baseball here in
- 46:27Speaker 8: Atlanta tonight. But I'm with you. I mean, the idea
- 46:29Speaker 8: of criticism at two o'clock in the afternoon. I know
- 46:32Speaker 8: some of the Philadelphia Phillies media was kind of jumping
- 46:35Speaker 8: on that when they were here for those two games
- 46:37Speaker 8: and saying, well, it would have been sold out in Philly.
- 46:39Speaker 6: Maybe who knows? That's something they could think about now.
- 46:41Speaker 4: Right.
- 46:41Speaker 8: The Phillies are done. But it is kind of what
- 46:44Speaker 8: it is here. And nobody is overly concerned about it.
- 46:47Speaker 1: CJ, before I let you go, just any bold prediction
- 46:49Speaker 1: you have for the remainder of this series. Put it
- 46:51Speaker 1: out there.
- 46:53Speaker 6: So I'm not Joey Votto.
- 46:55Speaker 8: I don't make huge, big, bold predictions to try to
- 46:57Speaker 8: get people's attention so that people then come back later
- 47:00Speaker 8: and say, oh, no, you were wrong. That's never been
- 47:03Speaker 8: my game. Like for me, right, what we do as
- 47:04Speaker 8: analysts is we sit and we look at situations. We think,
- 47:07Speaker 8: you know, where are teams going to be strong? What
- 47:09Speaker 8: potentially could happen? Who's going to have the biggest moment?
- 47:12Speaker 8: But I'm not going to fall into that trap, Alana.
- 47:14Speaker 8: I appreciate you trying. But no, I'm not a bold
- 47:16Speaker 8: prediction guy.
- 47:17Speaker 3: Right.
- 47:17Speaker 8: Of course, I want to see the Braves win this series.
- 47:19Speaker 8: I want to see them win. the next two games
- 47:21Speaker 8: and go to the NLC.
- 47:22Speaker 3: Yes.
- 47:23Speaker 6: But a bold predictions. No, Chris say we'll be good tonight.
- 47:25Speaker 6: That's as bold as I'll get.
- 47:26Speaker 1: That's pretty good. Going out on a limb.
- 47:29Speaker 7: That's smart because no, because if you would have said
- 47:33Speaker 7: the Braves would do something bad, then you can get
- 47:35Speaker 7: off the show and we have to listen to Alana's
- 47:38Speaker 7: wrath for the rest of the show.
- 47:39Speaker 3: So honestly, Kratz and I appreciate that more than anybody
- 47:43Speaker 3: else out there. Yeah.
- 47:45Speaker 6: I learned from Joey Votto really quickly.
- 47:47Speaker 1: I am not nearly the homer that these two think
- 47:49Speaker 1: I am. CJ, I appreciate you very much. Thanks for
- 47:52Speaker 1: being on the show. Best of luck the rest of
- 47:54Speaker 1: the way. We appreciate it, my friend.
- 47:56Speaker 6: Thank you, and don't ever, ever apologize for being a homer.
- 47:59Speaker 6: I don't, and you shouldn't. You got your team. You
- 48:01Speaker 6: got your team. It is what it is.
- 48:03Speaker 8: It's the joy of being a fan of a major
- 48:05Speaker 8: league team and working in media.
- 48:07Speaker 1: What do you mean it's not my team? What do
- 48:09Speaker 1: you mean?
- 48:09Speaker 2: Oh, now it's your team, so now you're a homer
- 48:12Speaker 2: all of a sudden.
- 48:13Speaker 3: I see a lot.
- 48:13Speaker 2: I see how it is. Unbelievable.
- 48:17Speaker 3: It is my team.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Whatever, AJ and the White Sox. And Kratz, you just
- 48:21Speaker 1: played for too many of them. You couldn't stick to one.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Thank you, CJ. Make sure to check him out on
- 48:27Speaker 1: the Braves podcast tonight. Be sure to tune into our
- 48:30Speaker 1: postgame coverage of this game after the game. It is
- 48:34Speaker 1: Kevin Pillar. It is Heidi Watney. It is who else
- 48:38Speaker 1: is on the show? Oh, Todd Frazier, of course. All right,
- 48:39Speaker 1: we'll be right back.
- 48:40Speaker 7: We'll be right back.
- 48:51Speaker 1: And it's time now to slap hands. This is interesting.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Brian Hoke saying that Aaron Boone said he is considering
- 48:59Speaker 1: a lineup change for game three. The Yankees have scored
- 49:02Speaker 1: two runs, guys, in the first two games of the ALDS. Apparently,
- 49:09Speaker 1: they listened to Eric Kratz wanting to change up the lineup. AJ,
- 49:12Speaker 1: we'll start with you. Not the biggest surprise, probably a
- 49:14Speaker 1: better move. What do you think?
- 49:16Speaker 3: Who do they put in? Who do they put in?
- 49:18Speaker 3: I don't know who they put in. And they're facing
- 49:20Speaker 3: a righty, so who do they put in? They face
- 49:22Speaker 3: two righties. They're going to run the same lineup. Kratz,
- 49:26Speaker 3: who do they put in? Tell me.
- 49:29Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean, obviously, you can't have mental mistakes. So,
- 49:35Speaker 2: to me, you put in guys who you don't think
- 49:38Speaker 2: are going to make those mistakes. And that's why Aaron
- 49:42Speaker 2: Boone gets paid a lot of cash. And I think
- 49:44Speaker 2: Aaron Boone should be this manager to do this. And
- 49:47Speaker 2: he has to make a tough decision tonight, tomorrow morning,
- 49:51Speaker 2: whenever he makes the lineup. And whoever's out there or
- 49:55Speaker 2: whoever's not out there can't have their feelings hurt. Stop
- 49:58Speaker 2: with that. Feelings hurt. My feelings are hurt. And I
- 50:02Speaker 2: never played in any games because you lose. When you win...
- 50:05Speaker 2: It doesn't matter. Like this isn't a regular season. It's
- 50:09Speaker 2: not two for four. What's the score? Oh, for four.
- 50:11Speaker 2: And we won could care less.
- 50:15Speaker 1: But isn't that the sign of a good teammate too?
- 50:16Speaker 1: Like you don't care if you're oh four, if your team,
- 50:19Speaker 1: if you won the game and a bad teammate could go,
- 50:21Speaker 1: you know, three for three, but the team lost and he,
- 50:24Speaker 1: and he couldn't care less because he's happy about his
- 50:26Speaker 1: own results.
- 50:28Speaker 2: Happy hit guy.
- 50:29Speaker 3: Happy hit guy.
- 50:31Speaker 2: A hundred percent. You can never be that guy, but
- 50:34Speaker 2: you can't just all of a sudden go, oh, it's
- 50:36Speaker 2: the playoffs. I was a happy hit guy during the season,
- 50:39Speaker 2: but now I'm a playoff guy.
- 50:40Speaker 3: Stop.
- 50:41Speaker 2: No. You're either there or you're not like you're either
- 50:45Speaker 2: all about the W and that matters from one, one
- 50:50Speaker 2: to one 62. And then it just happens in the
- 50:53Speaker 2: post season. Like it doesn't, you can't go from, ha ha, man,
- 50:56Speaker 2: I got three hits. Oh, I know we lost seven
- 50:58Speaker 2: to two, but look at me. I'm going to arbitration.
- 51:01Speaker 2: I'm going to free agency. No, like that, that if
- 51:04Speaker 2: that's permeating your, your locker room, I'm not saying it is,
- 51:07Speaker 2: but you can't be that guy and then turn that off.
- 51:10Speaker 3: Ozzie Gann and Nick Swisher. One day you'll hear that story.
- 51:13Speaker 3: Someone will tell that story.
- 51:15Speaker 2: Hey, Nick Swisher.
- 51:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 51:19Speaker 2: Nick Swisher is going to be the weakest link with
- 51:21Speaker 2: pap on Fox.
- 51:24Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 51:25Speaker 1: But they, uh, they, uh, recorded that many moons ago
- 51:29Speaker 1: and I can tell you, I won't do, I won't
- 51:30Speaker 1: do any spoilers, but I can just say pap did
- 51:32Speaker 1: not fare well.
- 51:34Speaker 3: Oh my God. The Mississippi state education didn't come through. Uh,
- 51:41Speaker 3: By the way, before we go, Kratz, I was walking
- 51:42Speaker 3: the streets of San Diego today, this morning, before we
- 51:46Speaker 3: came on, and I ran into my A-ball hitting coach
- 51:48Speaker 3: who I hadn't seen in, I don't know, 29 years
- 51:51Speaker 3: since I was in Florida State League. John Matthews came
- 51:54Speaker 3: up to me today. You ever run into an old
- 51:55Speaker 3: coach you haven't seen in, like, I don't know, 30 years?
- 52:00Speaker 2: You haven't seen him once.
- 52:03Speaker 3: Where would I have seen him? He worked for the Twins.
- 52:05Speaker 3: He didn't work for the Twins anymore. He's been with
- 52:07Speaker 3: the Padres for a while. I ran into him on
- 52:09Speaker 3: the streets. We were walking the streets. He was, you know, hey,
- 52:12Speaker 3: what's up? He introduced himself. I obviously knew who I was.
- 52:14Speaker 3: I hadn't seen him in 30 years, but as soon
- 52:16Speaker 3: as he said he was, I knew right who he was.
- 52:18Speaker 3: And I was like, remember that time you got in trouble?
- 52:20Speaker 3: You got so mad and got us in trouble for
- 52:22Speaker 3: throwing all those balls at the cows in Fort Myers.
- 52:25Speaker 3: And he started dying laughing.
- 52:26Speaker 2: He's like, oh, yeah.
- 52:27Speaker 3: I totally remember when all the pitchers were throwing balls
- 52:30Speaker 3: at cows at the Lee County Sports Complex because there
- 52:32Speaker 3: was cows in the outfield.
- 52:34Speaker 2: You create so many memories. And you can bring up
- 52:38Speaker 2: names like Kenny Joyce, Lee Guterman, my pitching coach in
- 52:44Speaker 2: rookie ball and medicine hat, yelling at Jose Salas, Ethan Salas' uncle,
- 52:49Speaker 2: about throwing baseballs over the fence. Ah, I love those
- 52:53Speaker 2: kinds of stories.
- 52:57Speaker 3: So.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Here's a thing from Joe Madden that was posted yesterday
- 53:01Speaker 1: when he was on the show. And AJ, you talked
- 53:04Speaker 1: about this earlier, I believe. The game today would rather
- 53:06Speaker 1: lose analytically than win based on feel. So then a
- 53:10Speaker 1: fan replied, and I'd like your take on this, guys.
- 53:12Speaker 1: Halloween Healthman has this to say. It's a double-edged sword.
- 53:15Speaker 1: If you make a move based on data or feel
- 53:17Speaker 1: and it works, it's because you were right or the
- 53:20Speaker 1: data was right. If it doesn't work out, the data
- 53:22Speaker 1: is overrated and your gut feeling was wrong. I think
- 53:24Speaker 1: a good manager does a healthy mix of both. Eric,
- 53:27Speaker 1: what do you think about what Halloween Halpin, his response
- 53:31Speaker 1: to Joe Maddon's thoughts?
- 53:33Speaker 2: I think that's exactly what we've discussed the entire day
- 53:35Speaker 2: and what we've said. We've just said it in different words.
- 53:38Speaker 2: He said this perfectly. Charlie Emanuel would always say when
- 53:41Speaker 2: he had good hitters, he'd be like, hey, water level's out.
- 53:46Speaker 2: He went to Raul Abanez. He's like, Raul, you're 0
- 53:48Speaker 2: for 12. He goes, I'm going to move you up
- 53:50Speaker 2: in the lineup. And Raul goes, what? Why? He goes,
- 53:54Speaker 2: because you're about to get hot. I believe in you.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Managers have to be able to do that stuff. You
- 53:59Speaker 2: have to be able to see it. You have to
- 54:00Speaker 2: be able to look past the result and see the approach,
- 54:05Speaker 2: see how it happened. And when we talk about this
- 54:07Speaker 2: with analytics, you're talking about building a team or you're
- 54:11Speaker 2: talking about managers making decisions. You build a team. You
- 54:15Speaker 2: don't have any athleticism. Your team's not going to be
- 54:17Speaker 2: able to win in athletic games. Those are all things
- 54:20Speaker 2: that go into it. But yeah, you have to know
- 54:22Speaker 2: the numbers. If you don't know the numbers, you're cooked.
- 54:25Speaker 1: It's interesting though, because he goes on to say, if
- 54:27Speaker 1: you look at a guy who is 0 for 16
- 54:29Speaker 1: against a certain pitcher, one manager will say, don't let
- 54:32Speaker 1: him hit. He struggles with this guy, AJ. And another
- 54:35Speaker 1: manager will say he's due, who with their whole chest
- 54:39Speaker 1: can say which philosophy is correct. I think he's just
- 54:41Speaker 1: proving our point, right? Like it's okay to use both.
- 54:44Speaker 1: You can't rely heavily only on one or the other.
- 54:48Speaker 3: No, I think what Joe Maddon was saying, and I
- 54:51Speaker 3: don't want to speak for Joe because Joe's very smart
- 54:53Speaker 3: and has great words. What Joe was saying is managers
- 54:58Speaker 3: have a fallback option. There used to be no fallback
- 55:00Speaker 3: option for managers. They would make a move and they
- 55:02Speaker 3: would have to wear it. Now, when they make a
- 55:05Speaker 3: mistake or things don't go the way they would like,
- 55:07Speaker 3: it's an easy fallback, right? I think that's what Joe
- 55:10Speaker 3: was saying. Again, I don't want to speak for Joe,
- 55:12Speaker 3: but I believe he was saying when managers mess up
- 55:15Speaker 3: or people assume managers make a mistake, they can just
- 55:18Speaker 3: point to their chart and say, well, the analytics said
- 55:21Speaker 3: it was time to take A or B out or
- 55:23Speaker 3: pinch hit A for B. against a certain pitcher. So
- 55:26Speaker 3: I think that's what Joe was saying. It used to
- 55:28Speaker 3: be a feel thing. Managers had to feel. They learned
- 55:31Speaker 3: from their experience. Not necessarily one way is right or
- 55:34Speaker 3: the other way is right. It was just Joe saying,
- 55:37Speaker 3: now managers have a fallback option.
- 55:40Speaker 2: This whole conversation reminds me of a conversation I had
- 55:42Speaker 2: when I was with the Yankees and the head of
- 55:44Speaker 2: the analytical department. I said, you project a player to
- 55:48Speaker 2: hit 280 on the season. He hits 190 in the
- 55:52Speaker 2: first month. Does that mean your projections say he's going
- 55:57Speaker 2: to hit 310 the rest of the way? Because if
- 56:02Speaker 2: that's the case, he needs to be moved up in
- 56:04Speaker 2: the lineup. Or if you're saying, no, he's going to
- 56:08Speaker 2: hit 280 the rest of the way, then the projections
- 56:10Speaker 2: are wrong. And you were incorrect with those projections. So
- 56:15Speaker 2: that's where the feel, the sight, the look of what
- 56:19Speaker 2: the player's doing has to be melded in play. 90% sometimes, 10%
- 56:25Speaker 2: other times in the decisions that you make day to day.
- 56:29Speaker 2: And the playoffs are day to day decisions. You're not
- 56:33Speaker 2: going to play 162 playoff games. You might only play
- 56:37Speaker 2: three if the Yankees don't figure it out. You might
- 56:39Speaker 2: only play three if the Padres don't figure it out.
- 56:42Speaker 2: So the numbers are okay to be thrown out the
- 56:45Speaker 2: window if you are watching the game and seeing what's happening.
- 56:50Speaker 1: Here's something I never thought I would see happen in
- 56:53Speaker 1: the postseason or really at all. The lineup for the
- 56:55Speaker 1: Dodgers game, guys, just came out, and Otani has been
- 56:59Speaker 1: moved down in the order. In fact, he is now
- 57:03Speaker 1: batting fifth, and Miguel Rojas is his protection. Did you
- 57:06Speaker 1: ever think that you would see that, AJ?
- 57:10Speaker 2: No.
- 57:11Speaker 4: Wow.
- 57:12Speaker 3: Okay. Good for the– Alana's going to cry. Okay.
- 57:15Speaker 1: No, I'm glad. I wanted him to move down. I
- 57:18Speaker 1: wanted Otani to move down.
- 57:19Speaker 2: Don't cry, Alana.
- 57:20Speaker 3: Yes. Don't cry for me, Alana.
- 57:23Speaker 2: Don't cry for me, Alana Rizzo.
- 57:25Speaker 1: You're so ridiculous. I like it. I like this lineup.
- 57:31Speaker 3: At least you and Clint have something to talk about
- 57:33Speaker 3: on the postgame now on Dodger territory.
- 57:36Speaker 1: How dare you.
- 57:36Speaker 2: That is– and I've said this so many times because
- 57:41Speaker 2: I think people just gloss over it because they think, oh,
- 57:43Speaker 2: the Dodgers just spend so much money. Dave Roberts is
- 57:47Speaker 2: an absolute savant. I'm not saying this is going to work.
- 57:51Speaker 2: I'm not saying if it doesn't work, it's because he
- 57:53Speaker 2: moved him down. But Dave Roberts has won the biggest
- 57:56Speaker 2: games in different ways. And you can't take Otani out.
- 58:00Speaker 2: We already talked about this. This is as close as
- 58:03Speaker 2: you can get to taking Otani out. Because you know what?
- 58:06Speaker 2: He might face a tired Chris Sale the third time through.
- 58:11Speaker 2: And that might turn advantage Otani. There you go.
- 58:15Speaker 1: Roberts enters Game 3 one win shy of 71 managerial
- 58:19Speaker 1: postseason wins, which would tie AJ's boy, Tony La Russa,
- 58:24Speaker 1: for second most all-time. Joe Torre holds the record, of course,
- 58:28Speaker 1: with 84. That means you have a lot of good teams.
- 58:30Speaker 1: It also means it is good at what you do.
- 58:32Speaker 1: All right, guys.
- 58:33Speaker 3: Next up is Hot Shoot. Yeah. I like Tony.
- 58:35Speaker 2: I like Tony. I thought you were going to say
