Sam: Hey, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about Being Thomas Jefferson by Andrew Burstein. Sophie, I have to ask, how do you even begin to hold a man like Jefferson in your head?
• 0:13
Sophie: Hey there Sam. That's exactly the question Burstein is wrestling with, right? Because Jefferson is the guy who wrote 'all men are created equal' and he also owned hundreds of human beings. Burstein doesn't want to just give us a timeline. He wants to get inside the mind of the man and figure out how those two things lived in the same head.
• 0:34
Sam: And that's the part that got me. Because it's not like Jefferson was oblivious. He knew. He wrote about it. He called slavery an abomination in his private letters. He just never did much about it.
• 0:47
Sophie: Right. And Burstein traces that back to where Jefferson started. He's born in 1743 into the Virginia gentry. His father dies when he's fourteen and leaves him land and slaves. His mother is a Randolph. So from day one, his whole world is built on hierarchy and slavery. That's the air he breathes.
• 1:10
Sam: It's like he inherited a set of blinders along with the estate. You know what I mean? He gets all this freedom to read and think and build, but it's all paid for by people who have none of that.
• 1:22
Sophie: Exactly. And Burstein is really good on the intellectual side. Jefferson goes to William and Mary and falls in with this Scottish professor, William Small, who introduces him to the Scottish Enlightenment. Hume, Hutcheson, that whole world. It shapes everything about how he thinks.
• 1:41
Sam: And he wasn't just reading books. He was measuring rainfall and recording plant growth and teaching himself architecture from Palladio. He designs Monticello himself. That house is basically his brain made out of brick. Always under construction, never finished.
• 1:59
Sophie: That's such a good way to put it. And then 1776 happens. He's thirty-three. He's asked to draft the Declaration of Independence. And Burstein makes the point that the ideas weren't new. Locke had said a lot of it. But Jefferson turns it into poetry.
• 2:17
Sam: Yeah, and the phrase 'pursuit of happiness' is interesting. He borrows it from Hutcheson, but he gives it this American meaning. For Jefferson, happiness isn't just feeling good. It's actively using your reason and your virtue to flourish. It's a civic thing.
• 2:35
Sophie: And here's where it gets painful. In his first draft, Jefferson actually included a passage condemning the slave trade. He blamed King George for forcing it on the colonies. But the southern delegates made him take it out, and he didn't fight for it.
• 2:50
Sam: That's the pattern for his whole life, isn't it? He says the right thing in private and then doesn't push when it counts. He only freed a handful of slaves in his will, mostly the Hemings family. And even then, it was after he died.
• 3:05
Sophie: Burstein doesn't let him off the hook for that. He says it's a stain that can't be removed. And I appreciate that the book doesn't try to explain it away. It just sits there, and you have to look at it.
• 3:17
Sam: Right. So then we get the political years. Governor of Virginia, minister to France, secretary of state, and vice president. And this is where the Hamilton clash comes in. Two totally different visions of what America should be.
• 3:34
Sophie: Hamilton wants a strong central government, a national bank, commerce, and manufacturing. Jefferson wants agrarian virtue, limited government, states' rights. And it's not just policy. It's a fight about the soul of the Revolution.
• 3:50
Sam: Jefferson sees Hamilton as trying to bring back the aristocracy they just fought a war to escape. Hamilton sees Jefferson as a naive idealist who doesn't want government to work. And honestly, you can kind of see both sides.
• 4:06
Sophie: Then 1800 happens. The election is a mess. Jefferson and Burr tie in electoral votes. It goes to the House. Thirty-six ballots. Hamilton, of all people, steps in and helps Jefferson win because he thinks Burr is worse.
• 4:22
Sam: And Jefferson calls it the Revolution of 1800. Which sounds dramatic, but it kind of was. It's the first peaceful transfer of power between opposing parties in modern history. That's not nothing.
• 4:35
Sophie: But then as president, he does things that seem to contradict everything he said. He sends the navy to fight the Barbary pirates without congressional approval. And then the Louisiana Purchase. He doubles the size of the country and admits it's probably unconstitutional.
• 4:52
Sam: That's the part where I actually laughed out loud. He's like, 'I know this isn't legal, but it's too good to pass up.' And you're sitting there thinking, this is the guy who preached limited government his whole career.
• 5:04
Sophie: Burstein's point is that Jefferson was more pragmatic than his rhetoric. He wasn't a fool. He just believed that democracy needed land and independent farmers to survive. The Louisiana territory was going to secure that for generations.
• 5:20
Sam: And that's why he sends Lewis and Clark out there. It's not just science. It's geopolitics. He wants to claim the Pacific Northwest and set up trade with Native American tribes. It's expansion by exploration.
• 5:34
Sophie: And his Native American policy is another contradiction. He genuinely believed they could be 'civilized' and assimilated. But when they resisted, he wrote that they'd be forced west, and if they fought back, they'd be exterminated. That's not the language of equality.
• 5:51
Sam: No, it's not. And Burstein doesn't shy away from that either. He shows you the full picture. Jefferson the enlightenment thinker and Jefferson the empire builder are the same person.
• 6:03
Sophie: After he leaves office, he goes back to Monticello and just reads and writes. He reconciles with John Adams, and their letters are incredible. He founds the University of Virginia. He designs the buildings, plans the curriculum. Education was everything to him.
• 6:20
Sam: But he's also drowning in debt. Monticello is beautiful, but it's run by enslaved people. He can't afford to free them, he says, and he can't afford to give up the lifestyle. It's a trap he built for himself.
• 6:35
Sophie: And he dies on July 4, 1826. Exactly fifty years after the Declaration. Adams dies the same day. It's almost too perfect. His last words were supposedly about freeing his slaves, but only five were freed. The rest were sold to pay his debts.
• 6:54
Sam: That's the part that just sits in your chest. He knew. He wrote about it. And in the end, he still couldn't do it. Not even on his deathbed.
• 7:03
Sophie: Burstein's conclusion is that Jefferson isn't a simple hypocrite. He's a man of his time who couldn't transcend the limits of his world. The tragedy isn't that he failed to live up to his ideals. It's that he couldn't even fully imagine what that would look like.
• 7:19
Sam: And that's why he's a mirror for America. We're founded on this beautiful idea, and we've spent centuries failing to live up to it. Jefferson is us. The best and the worst of us in one person.
• 7:32
Sophie: Yeah. The book doesn't let you worship him or dismiss him. It just makes you sit with the contradiction and ask what it means for today.
• 7:40
Sam: The one thing I'm taking away is that honesty about our heroes matters more than hero worship. Jefferson gave us the language of human rights, and he also showed us how privilege can blind even the smartest people. We need both lessons.
• 7:56
Sophie: And if you want to go deeper, the full library is over at 7minutebooks.com/app. There are over 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language, plus infographics on many of them. It's $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 once for lifetime access.
• 8:22
Sophie: The whole point of Jefferson's life is that we have to engage with our contradictions honestly, not run from them. We'll see you in the next one.
