- 0:37SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Janice Ho.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: 40 pretentious don't talk to him.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Ten years later, it's the error of his way.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: My guest today is a very funny comedian who's currently doing his debut hour, Boyboss at theater of the French Festival.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: It's Daniel McKeon.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: Hey, Janis, thanks for having me.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: How are you, man?
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thanks for good, thanks.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: How are you doing?
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Like you're up in Edinburgh at the moment.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: You're doing your debut?
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: Yes, doing my debut show, Boy Boss.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: Uh it's uh uh it's been going good.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: I I I like doing it a lot.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: Um it's very odd.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't have anything interesting about Edinburgh to say.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: I think all the cliches are true, honestly.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: Um so and if you're hearing my craggly voice, that's that's that's that's that's from that from doing karaoke, actually, not even from doing the show.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: Oh the thing was I really want to see Oh thank you, thank you so much for asking.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's because I was absolutely gonna leave that uh I was singing Hot and Cold by Katie Perry.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: Um I just had to there was something in my soul I had to do it, but it's quite uh you know, obviously it's not very chic to give Katy Perry her flowers these days, but it's quite a tricky song.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it can't be like I don't think it's an easy song.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Her vocal range is quite like it it's a lot, so like I don't think it's an easy any of her songs are quite like as easy as you think.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Well there's a bit right in the middle in the the bridge, which I forgot about, where she really like goes for it and it gets quite not emotional, but I'd say raw in the song.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: And because it's like someone called the doctor, and you gotta really like sell it and ever and you know uh or at least I felt I felt the need to sell that bit of just like this is where it really comes into its own.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: Um so yeah, yeah.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, I I got that's one thing I actually I am missing this year.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: I'm not missing a whole lot about going to Edinburgh because it's just like it's the stress of it and everything is just too much.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: But like the karaoke stuff is just that that's always so fun.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I've already scheduled another one on the I'm already going to another one like next week or something, just to really just to be like, no no, don't learn, don't learn from your mistakes, completely forget it, like re reset after your day off and just make the same mistakes again.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: How many days in are you now?
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: Oh, sorry.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: The 8th of August, as of the day of recording, so we're we're nine days in.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: Um so I've done about eight shows.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: Uh I really like where the show's at.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: I like doing the show.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: Uh and even when it's small, I think the lowest numbers we had was four.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: Which, if any comedians are listening to, I'm very grateful for it.
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: I'm not not gonna I'm not knocking it.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: Uh but it's quite fun to know that I could do I can do it to four and still mess around.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: And also I saw um recently I had a thing of I saw our friend Sumi, who also has a show, a clowning show, and I watched that and a lot of the uh kind of clownery energy came upon me.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: The the spirit of Robert McDonald took me over, and I was like just really really liked the idea of play and being very like free and not giving a fuck and trying to find it without being too much of a of a of a wanker about it.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: But well, I haven't I haven't seen the show since last year, so I imagine it's quite changed quite a quite a fair amount.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: Uh but I can think just uh every whip, just like I'm nailing this.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: No need to change any of that, no need to cut that.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: That's all good.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: What I was gonna say though is that I can imagine the clownery in it as well.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: I can imagine you like putting some clown clowning moments into it, which is it's that seems fun for for this show.
- 4:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I imagine it will happen later on in the run to keep it interesting because there have been a bit of of uh sort of muscle memory of it, and um for the listeners, for the dear listeners, Yanis was actually very helpful in giving me some director's notes because he's a very thoughtful and insightful person and is a very good director for anyone who wants to work with him.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: But it was really it was extremely helpful because it made me see it from outside, because I think it's quite hard to see what you're doing inside.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: Uh and it was yeah, you were a hugely, hugely important part of that.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Oh, thank you.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: I appreciate that.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I really I do genuinely like I really like the show, and like I think it's definitely so if you're if you are listening to this and you are up in Edinburgh for for the next uh couple of weeks, this will literally be out on Tuesday, so like uh Tuesday.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Tuesday on the Patreon, Thursday uh to the public.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: So like if you are listening to this, go go and see Dan.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: It's it's boy boss.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: And what what's the room and what's the time?
- 5:18SPEAKER_03: The room is it's just Atomic the Caves, the Wii one at 9.30.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: Um and it's pay what you want, so you can just show up.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: Uh and you can pre-book it in advance.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: But if it I'm a cheapskate, so if it was me, I would just show up.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: Uh but that's like that's and that's that's really my core demo is is is uh just your Patreon subscribers who somehow don't have money for other things.
- 5:44SPEAKER_03: They waste all their money on your Patreon and then come to pre-shows.
- 5:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's what I would say.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: The whole all the five the the five pounds a month, but which I do appreciate, but it's also a new Patreon, so like, yeah.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, completely.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: It's like I would love to like yeah, I uh so yes, definitely, definitely come through.
- 6:01SPEAKER_03: We'd love to have you.
- 6:02SPEAKER_03: Uh the audiences have been really fun and cool so far.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: Um I would say I would say seven out of eight have been really good shows.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: Okay, that's a good that's a good yeah, it was a really like there was only one where it felt like I was trying to win them over, which was like kind of retrospect fulfilling, because it was like, I think I got you guys.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: I think you guys got it by the end.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: Like, I think you guys were like, oh, that was okay.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: But it's hard to say.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: I'm not very good at judging that stuff.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Um, it's good.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: Like I that's that's really nice.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: And also, like, you've got a nice room as well, so like that's yeah.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: I would yeah.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: It's got a big spotlight, like a really stark spotlight, like a like I've been caught doing a cat burglary or something, and I love it.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: I get a real kick out of it.
- 6:46SPEAKER_03: Oh fun.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: I like it.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, fits the vibe as well.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: Sure, yeah, why not?
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, spotlights really fit the vibe of my show, yeah.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Well, boy boss.
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: Yes, exactly.
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: It's it's very it's very that and very uh it's been fun, it's been cool.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: We've had storms, we've got Oasis Day today.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, of course, yeah.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because uh there's a lot of of of of moving parts to contend with, but it's still been it's still been fun, and like yeah, I was like, did you perform on the storm day?
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: You did you still got to perform that though?
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: Yes, because uh uh just tonic don't really care if you live or die.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: So I mean they'll just say you know I mean only one venue did stop, I think.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: No, it was just the place, it really wasn't that bad at all.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: Like I don't know what it was like reading about it, but it was it was windy for sure, and like stuff was falling over and things like that, but it was it was fine, it was still sunny and nice, and like you could go around.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: So uh I that was the only thing I was worried about, like the news making it a bigger deal.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: And not to sound all conspiracy theory, but I do feel like weather is sometimes made up.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: Like when they do the weather predictions, it does feel made up to me.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I I I and I'm not again I'm not anti-intellectual or anything.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: I'm just trying I'm just like sometimes I'm like, how?
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: How do you know?
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: Like for sure.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, how do you know?
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: There's no there's no way of real there's no real way of knowing.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like and and and I just want to know there really should just be a weather app which is just like accurate.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: You click on it.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: Well, no, you you you're accurate, sure, but I think actually more simplistic, less accurate, if it just says like hoodie today, or like you know, raincoat.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Exactly, yes.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: That is exactly yeah.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: That this is a this is an app you should make.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: I would never make an app.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: Uh I would never I think we have enough but I just think it'd be like because I'm like a vain, I get all I get all anxious about what I'm gonna wear, or like I want to just get it done.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: So if you just if I'm when I'm checking the weather app, that's really what I mean, is like what should I what what what thickness of jeans should I wear when I leave the house?
- 8:53SPEAKER_03: Is basically what I'm what I'm trying to find.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: I've never heard uh jeans described in terms of thickness.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: Well, I'll tell you, I'll tell you, Yanis.
- 9:00SPEAKER_03: Uh I I've been I wore wore some thick uh jeans I have here, like quite weighty jeans, and it was hot, and I just like and you feel the layers, you feel the thickness, yeah.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Because that is the thing that that is actually the weird thing with Edinburgh, is like it it will change like minute to minute, and you you cannot you're like, I I have no idea what to wear, so you have to take everything with you and just hope for the best.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was literally, it was like it's it's it's quite miserable today, actually, which is why um but uh so yeah, you've got to really just just it's just that's just Scotland, baby.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: You know, you've got to get the way they do it over here.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, okay, so like let's let's let's go into uh because we're short for time for everything.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: I don't want to keep you too long and everything.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: Which uh you gave me two choices, and one of them was too high.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: So one of them was Quantum of Solace, which I which you've done, I think.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: You no, I haven't done you.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: No, I haven't done Quantum of Solace.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: It was just too highly rated.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: Thank God, the tides are turning.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: I was a big I was I'm a big Quantum of Solace.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: I'm a big QOS defender.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: I I think QOS is is there's uh we we don't have time to get fully into it, but my friend tells me this joke that his roommate says, which Quantum of Solace, uh the James Bond movie for anyone who was could for for anyone, because there's not anyone in the film, yeah, uh, but he says that it sounds like something your mum yells when you're being too loud in the house.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: Just being like, can I just get a quantum of solace in here?
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: Like he just so every time I watch it, it's just echoing in my head.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Um every time you watch it, how many times have you seen it?
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Well, one time through my uh YouTube Shorts, which is I would say is the best way to watch that particular movie.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: I was watching so many YouTube shorts recently, and it hit me of like I should just watch this movie fully.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: I did the same with all the Craig movies actually.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: I watched all of them back to back, it was really weird.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: I think Casino Royale is a fucking nearly perfect movie.
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: That's like it's exactly what it's doing so well.
- 11:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the tension's so really it comes out the gate so strong for Daniel Craig, and it like Yeah, it's so good, and like ball torture scene, who else is doing it like that?
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: Like it's incredible, it's an incredible thing.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: And then Quantum of Solace is so nearly you can see it on the page, you can see what the script wanted it to be, but it just doesn't quite get there, and you get quite so it's frustrating that way.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: That's the only one I haven't gone back to out of the Daniel Craig ones.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: So I saw it when it came out, and then I haven't seen it again.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because I just I don't have good memories of it.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: No completely.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: But it's been so long, it's been so long since I've seen it that I'm like, it probably is fine.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like it is fine, but you do see the problems as it goes on, and you're like, ah, it's just maybe it did just have to be it, Casino Real to be like because it trying to be grounded just never really worked.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: Although I watched Skyfall right after it, and I was like, this fucking sucks.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: That's aged terribly, that movie.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: That's like really not fun at all.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was just like, it's boring.
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: I'm like, yeah, maybe that's yeah, I just really wasn't into it.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: The other pick, by the way, I should say, which I realized as we got on this call, is uh Venom The Last Dance, which I will defend to my dying breath.
- 12:21SPEAKER_03: I think that movie's fucking fan.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen that.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: But I did like one of my first films on one of the first films that was ever talked about on here was Venom, like the original Venom.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: Oh really?
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: The first one?
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's which I I actually enjoy.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: I think it's really fun.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: Me too.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: I think they're fun movies, and they're such an odd product for Yeah.
- 12:40SPEAKER_03: I think the only thing I'll say for Venom, because I think anyone who knows me will be sick of me talking about Venom because I love it so much.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: But it's like it's such a weird product to emerge out of a real uh sludge and like bad faith investment, whereas like they clearly just wanted to get something out of a Spider-Man project.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: And but what came out of it was so Tom, I think firstly, Tom Hardy's such a fucking nutter, and like all the people around him were so into a particular idea of what Venom was.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: Um Venom sings a song in Venom Last Dance and dances, and he loses a bunch of shoes, and like he does a lot of weird, there's a lot of random stuff that happens in Venom that I think is so charming and so weird.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: I don't want to spoil it for you at the end, but it also does a bit.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: Do you mind if I mention it or like I don't want to?
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: No, no, go for it, go for it.
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: There's a bit at the end where it does a kind of uh montage flashback of like, oh, remember Venom?
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: Because it's the last one.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: But there's there's not too many clips of Venom, so a lot of it is just seeing clips of the movie you just watched.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: So, yeah, I remember that.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: I was just watching that.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: I remember that happening.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: It goes, remember this, uh, and then it cuts to like the remember the remember the remembering.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: It just keeps coming back in mind.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: It just keeps going, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: But it's also it comes out of nowhere and it's set to Maroon 5's uh here's to the ones that we love song.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, but about Venice.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: Are you serious?
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm 100%.
- 14:06SPEAKER_03: Oh, I need to watch this.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: And I just I wish I picked it so bad.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: I'm actually gonna just not have any of the spirit for this movie now that we're gonna talk about.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: But like it was just I dragged my friends with me to the cinema to see that movie, and because I was like, this is so fucking these movies are sick, and I really made the case for them.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: And they just were like, they came out of it like that, dude.
- 14:26SPEAKER_03: You just wasted our whole evening.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: This sucks.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: No, I'm so fascinated by like the Sony spin-offs, like the the Venom, the uh what are the other ones?
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: There's the the the Jared Leto one.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Morbius.
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: Morbius, yeah, yeah.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: Um I've never seen Morbius.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: So bad.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: So bad.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's not just it's not enjoyable even.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: And then there's um so then there was the Aaron Taylor Johnson one.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: I forgot all the Raven the Hunter, yeah.
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: It would be because I remember like they all they really had was that he was a hunter in the trailer for it, so it's like the hunter becomes the hunted, and I was like, fuck me, you guys had nothing to work with this.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: But he he he he would be like, it was there's just like a weird, I think it's just like it's such it with Venom particularly, I don't think they can do it again, but it was just like so odd, and like what they got out of it was so funny to me, and I just really found it very charming.
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: I don't know why.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: And there was something in how much they committed to it that I really liked, and also Venom as a character speaks to this very like mindset of like a gross kid who would like eat worms and stuff, and I really like that.
- 15:47SPEAKER_03: There was something where it's like this just is so the logic of like a freaky little guy that I really am pre- I really enjoyed.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: So, yeah.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: Was that you as a kid?
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: Not even, like it was I just like it was I was uh I guess I was kind of gross.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: On a holiday one time, me and my brother got in this big mud fight because we found a big pool of mud.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: This was in centre parks, and we were just kind of flinging mud at each other, and um I mean that that's kind of along those lines.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: It was pretty gross, but it wasn't like listen, that you can always get grosser, so yeah.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, eating worms is a lot grosser.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: Eating worms, yeah, like well, and I guess I just yeah, I don't know, and I was like, I like it for that kid to get a kid.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:29SPEAKER_03: I think it rocks when Venom eats a head.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: But Venom is not the movie that we're talking about.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: No, no, Venom is not the movie.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: We're talking about we are talking about a sequel though, and we're talking about the Mummy Returns.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Which it's a classic.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: It's it's a s it's I I saw this.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: You couldn't even say that with full conviction.
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: No, because I I'm but we'll get into it.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say, I saw this.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: So I saw this when it came out.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: I went to so I was 12 when this came out.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: I saw it twice at the cinema in the same week.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: Oh hell yeah, I had no idea.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: That's so cool.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: Okay, nice.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: I went I went back to watch it because I was like, I love this so much.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: And I think that is the I think I think it's kind of I was the target audience at the time.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: I think I really do think I was like the core fan base of what this m the movie was.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: I loved the original when it came out, and I was such a fan, and I was just like, I need to go and see this, and the saw that saw it, went back the same week, watched it again.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: I loved it when it came out.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: Haven't seen it in many, many years.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Watched it this morning.
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: And we'll get into it.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: But like, what is your what is your history with it?
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: Um, I mean, okay, the mummy I think is a top four movie, the first mummy movie.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's that's that's a strong claim.
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: I think it's just I think it's one of my at least top ten, I would say, maybe not top four, but I think like it's just so much fun for for the the the the whole is so much more than the parts.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:07SPEAKER_03: And I think it's and all the things that are good about the mummy are also, I think, the good parts of the mummy returns.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: Everyone's on fire in this movie, everyone's perfectly cast, everyone hits the beats of what they have to do perfectly well, the dynamics are really good.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: Um and I think it gets a lot of stick because it's like but I think it's the watching it today, I was thinking like it's not it's so uncomplicated in how they made it a sequel.
- 18:32SPEAKER_03: Like I feel that now sequel creation has to have this whole weird furnishing thing.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: This is just so much like we're back, all the fun stuff you liked about the first one, we're doing it again, yeah.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: You know, there's a there's a kid now, uh, and all this stuff.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: Um and I I I I I think you gotta think about what kids like, and they like wolfhead shit, and they like big scorpions, and they love like I mean I think this is what it was.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: I was yeah, yeah.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: I was like so of course, like the other thing was I was this was when I was watching wrestling as well, and the rock was you know you know the big the biggest he was the star at the time, and so like I I think I watched this and I was like, wow, the villain is going to be the rock as well.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: This is this is gonna like Yeah, this is gonna crush, and then you see what he does in this.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: It it does that that choice makes very little sense because like if you think about it, like seeing the rock as a wrestler, you want to see him go toe-to-toe with the heroes, right?
- 19:35SPEAKER_03: Like you want to see it's the rock's physicality, and then they took a big swing.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: But I'll tell you something.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: Like, look, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna knock this film because I looked up on YouTube.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: The clip of of the rock appearing on YouTube has 40 million views.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: That's viral, baby.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: That's money.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: That's like, yeah, that's still just the clip of it.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: Just the just the like five-minute clip of I think maybe it was them killing killing him.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: Well, I feel like I know why that has got so many views.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: What because people like watching the rock die, or like no, it's because it's because it's become a meme of like how bad the CGI is for that.
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: Well, okay, I was trying to okay, so as we know, the CGI is really bad.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: And I'm not gonna The thing is I also think there's another take you have to have is that it's funny to laugh at The Rock, because the Rock is a ridiculous person.
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: He is, yeah.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: He takes himself way too seriously.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: And to see him now being like, I love tequila, and I wake up at 4 a.m.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: and like the rock o'clock and all this stuff, it's just like, don't forget who you were, man.
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: You were willing to you were willing to show up and do this fucking flick.
- 20:45SPEAKER_03: Was that his first acting role, the Scorpion King?
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: I believe I believe this was his first like serious film.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: I don't I I think he might have done like a couple of I feel like he was him playing hims no, he played his dad.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: He played his own dad in that 70s show for like one episode.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: Right, sure, sure, sure.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: That's kind of fun, that's cool.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: I I like that.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: And then and then I think it was this, but it was like it was all very close to like they were all very close to each other in time in the time frame.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: So I think he was just like just starting to get out with wrestling and into the move into movies and TV.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: And it does show in that opening where his his acting is is so like it's literally just like he's like, So the Scorpion King walks through the desert, and then the rock is like, Oh, fool, it's hot out here.
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, it's always like a uh a uh uh what's it called?
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: A um uh silent film actor in terms of just like well, like that bit in Futurama where it's like you you can't just have the characters announce how they feel.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: Like that makes me angry.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: It's so true.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, and he's just like it's it it's so insane because that bit it is it does feel like a ride, like it feels like a cutscene in a in a in in like an Egypt game, you would probably I was thinking that.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: I was thinking that exact same thing.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: I was like I this feels like the the the the actual ride at Universal Studios, this is what it f it feels like that you've just taken that scene fr like you've taken something from there and put it into a film.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, completely.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, and but I think that's actually the strength of the movie though, because like a lot of those what do you call it, Disney or Orlando Studios, I guess it would be interesting.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: It's uh if this one's at Universal.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: Universal, sorry, yes.
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: So like, but if you've got to think about it, like for they would obviously try and make rides into movies, right?
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: But I think this is the first movie, maybe that successfully made a ride.
- 22:34SPEAKER_03: Like it's like you can see it's like this would be a much you can imagine some exec or you know, being like I don't see it.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: I mean it does make so much sense, but I think also that so there was one there's been a couple before this, so like there was so there's the ET ride, and then there's um Indiana Jones, and I think they took the base they were like Indiana Jones was so successful as a ride, they're like, Oh, we've got to do it with the mummy, and as well.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, Yeah, that makes so much sense because it's it's a great ride.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: It's actually a great ride, it's really fun.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: I have a question though, is the ET ride not just going on a bike?
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: Like is it not just like get on your bike and okay, cool sweet.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: You sit on the bike.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, you sit on the bike, and I actually have a stand-up bit about this because it because of what happened on it like when I was eight years old.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: Take it away, welcome to the stage.
- 23:17SPEAKER_03: Let's go.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: No, I will tell you, I will tell you what happened.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna do the bit, but like what happens is you get on the ride and he gives you um you give your name at the start of the ride, and you just go through and you ride your bikes, and then at the end he says goodbye to everyone.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: But because he could individually, yeah, he goes, like it doesn't he doesn't say to every specific person, but he'll like names at random.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: But like I would yeah, I was like eight years old and he couldn't say my name, and he he said goodbye, Yanus.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: And he was like pointing.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: Oh of course, yeah, I remember this video, and with the finger.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, with the finger, yeah.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: That's really good.
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: I just feel it's like I think they just do a really good job, and like the the whole I mean, those the the the Anubis heads are like I i I I it was shocking because I think like you always look back when you look at like Toy Story and you see that they're like at the time they were like this was a huge leap forward for for CGI, and then now it's like fucking holy hell, that's so much.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: Um, but you you did can I check sorry because you did the the Scorpion King before you've done an episode.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Not done an episode in the no.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: Because I will say I was watching that bit and I was like, I'd much rather watch the full Scorpion King right now.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: I've watched the opening.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just really I Oh I ha I've always had issues with that film.
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: I've had a positive memory of it.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it holds up, maybe, but there's um but I think like I I like that the rock tried, like you can really see him in those clips, even though he's not with anyone, he's really trying to sell it.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: Like he's really trying to go for it.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: But there's also a great moment.
- 24:48SPEAKER_03: Sorry, I'm jumping around a little bit.
- 24:49SPEAKER_03: No, no, go for it.
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: The um there's a great moment where like the the the forest sort of flashes up and oh the jungle, sorry, where where the the stuff is, and then there's a little bit of writing at the bottom, which is like the oasis of arm sheer.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's almost like the director was like, We're not we're not explaining it, but they're gonna need to know that later, just write it in.
- 25:06SPEAKER_03: And it's just like, by the way, it's the oasis of arms shear.
- 25:08SPEAKER_03: Remember that, that's important.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, don't forget.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: Don't forget, we're gonna you'll see this again, obviously.
- 25:13SPEAKER_03: But like, yeah, you'll you'll know what's up.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: I'm surprised they don't announce it over like on the on the voiceover.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: Honestly, it just it's like it's uh what's it called?
- 25:23SPEAKER_03: Like uh Chekhov's Oasis of Armshare, but it's just like look, look, look, look, look, here, here, look at it, please.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: This is gonna happen.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: That's great.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: And um the other thing that's really good about this movie is it's so unpretentious.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Like we can really say obviously, no, it's so fun, it's such a fun movie.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's a B it's a pure B movie, and like and it it's such a throwback to like those it it it really does capture the like the 1930s B movie monster vibe really well.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: Like, and I think that's yeah, I think he and that's testament to like the director Steven Summers.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: And I think so.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: He's someone who also went on to do um Van Helsing, if I think if I'm getting that correct.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: The loudest movie ever made.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: The fucking I watched that movie, uh, I was watching we do some friends of mine do this thing where we watch like three kind of random movies all together just for like fun.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: And we got to the third one was Van Helsing, and it was just so fucking loud, and I was just watching like, can we just talk about it?
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: But it was just like this was so fucking loud.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: Like, in the right, I don't remember it being loud, I just remember it being well I've I've talked about it on this uh this that's something that's come up on this before, but like it's it's um yeah, it's just kind of boring.
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: Oh, it just sucks, yeah.
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: No, it just objectively sucks.
- 26:37SPEAKER_03: But also, Stephen Summers, it's a real shame, and I think one of the things that makes me sad about this movie is you can see uh kind of CG green screen slop like really affecting the movie, and they clearly wanted it to be a franchise and wanted it to do well, but Steven Summers does so much better in practical effects.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, yeah, yeah.
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: Like the bus set piece in this when there's there's a bit where they're driving in the big bus and they're driving away from the baddies or whatever, yeah.
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: So it works so much better with their shootouts and doing the jumping round, and it makes me um I I get mad about it because it clearly was something like a producer was like, we need to get this kind of thing.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: But really, Imotep looks great.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: He does, yeah, yeah.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I I it it it it bugs me that it he had to become, and then you see in Van Helsing, like it did become that's so CG'd where it's like not even fun to watch, it's just like really sort of dissonant and bad and stupid.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: Um really coming for Van Helsing for no reason.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: But I I I love that yeah, that's anyway, yeah.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: No, it's a great like so like the thing about this as well is it's it cost ninety-eight million dollars to make uh in 2001.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: Which is and it and then it made uh I want to pull this up to get this these numbers correct.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: Um it made one uh where is it?
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: It grossed yeah, it grossed 443 million.
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: Wow, wow.
- 28:04SPEAKER_03: But I would go see it.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: Like that's a classic, like we did it before, it's a great sequel.
- 28:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I will say, look, some of the plot bits where they're like, oh, Brendan Fraser, you're actually the uh uh Ajay or or uh you know one of the one of the protective people.
- 28:19SPEAKER_03: It's like, yeah, whatever.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: Like, who gives a fuck?
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: I don't need to know about that.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, there's a lot of stuff where you're like, I do not care.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Just just do it, just do a set piece.
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just show me show me Rachel Weiss firing a gun.
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: Like, just that's all I need to watch to do.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: That is the most fun stuff, and also like that's why you've cast Brendan Fraser as well.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: Because he is the king of this the this kind of stuff.
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: Also, I would say this film I think invented the like yeah, they fly now kind of dynamic.
- 28:45SPEAKER_03: Like, I think it really I think you're right.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: It's it's about you gotta remember it was 2006, so that was fucking cutting edge.
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: Like 2001, 2001.
- 28:52SPEAKER_03: 2001, sorry, yeah, 2001.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: So um it was so that was really like impressive at the time, but it it he does it like 50 different times.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: And actually, the character of Rick O'Connell did bug me this time because his whole character is him going like, God, here we go again.
- 29:10SPEAKER_03: Like we're stuck in this mess.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: And it's just like, when are you gonna get over it?
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: Like, when are you gonna like this is your life?
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: Like, you shot at people before the mummy, you'll shoot at people after the mummy.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: And I just was really like, with the real like a real energy being like, hey, gr come on.
- 29:27SPEAKER_03: Like, quit the whining.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: Like, let's go, let's go, come on.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: No, I so you don't do you find him more annoying in this than than in Do you like him in the first one, and you you have an issue with him in this one?
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: Is that what it is?
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: No, no, I like him.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: He has the same thing in both, but I think this is where the the riffing is slightly where this movie falls down, I would say.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I can see that.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: So it's a little bit too much riffing.
- 29:51SPEAKER_03: Like there's the scene where they go to get the plane from Izzy, who, by the way, is a phenomenal actor and does really good, really sells the thing that he's doing, which is that kind of exasperated like thing.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: But there's this he has this joke, like, last time I saw you, I got shot, and I got shot in the arse.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: And they play that's the punchline for like five different lines, and I'm like, alright, guys, take another pass at that.
- 30:13SPEAKER_03: That's not it's not that funny that he got shot.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: Like, well I think what I I I also have a I have a theory about this, like what's what's happened here with this movie.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: So the first one came out in 99.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: Huge success.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: Um this one, they filmed it in May 2000.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: They rushed this one out.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they didn't know.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: They they they immediately got to writing that.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: There was no time to do another part.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: Yes, they truly, yeah, yeah.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: Because they need because they need they knew the it's obvious they look at look at how they ran out of time for the CGI.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, literally, yeah, they definitely some poor guy was sweating blood just like on his laptop at like 5 a.m.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: And they were like, you need to get you need to make Dwayne Johnson into a scorpion right now.
- 31:04SPEAKER_03: It's like, I can't do it, please.
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: Can you just do the thing?
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: On his Windows 2000.
- 31:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, truly.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: His his laptop's almost on fire, the fans just firing, it's looking like it's not just crying like a dog.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: Like it's not you, it's just like completely not running, and he's just like and it's just the rock's face.
- 31:23SPEAKER_03: You have to imagine CGI designer people have seen the rock animated in so many different ways that it just haunts them late at night.
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: They're just like, yeah.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, this must be this must be like the worst.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: This this must be like everything they see, and like this is what not to do with CGI.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: Well, truly, like, yeah.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: This is like one of those, you know, when uh when you work hospitality and they're just like, what's wrong with this picture?
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: And then it goes to just like a guy like you know, cuts his finger and smears it on the desk or whatever, and then like, yeah, it's it's like that, but for CG, I think.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: Um also go on.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: No, no, go on.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: No, it's it's it's unrelated, it's uh it relates to another thing.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: Okay, I was just gonna say, like, it's it they describe it as PS2 graphics.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: Uh that's what that's what the joke is, but it it it really truly is if you look back on it.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: And it's like a lot of if you actually look at the if you look at all the enemies in the background and everything, and you look at all the all of everyone fighting, you look at them, they're all the same characters, like duplicated multiple times.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: It's one it's one Anubis going like going like you just say one like back and forth, back and forth, like yeah, yeah.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: Stab, yeah.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: It's like pulling a string on a toy or something, yeah.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: It's just like nothing.
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: Um I also just wanted what I wanted to mention before, there's a great moment which I really love how they play this, which is um Rick O'Connell, they're driving somewhere, they're trying to get his kid back, and Rick O'Connell pulls down a sack of guns, and he very, very earnestly goes to Ard Death like um uh you want the shotgun?
- 32:56SPEAKER_03: He's like, I prefer the Thompson.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: And it's just this tiny little moment, and I really I found it so charming this time.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: I don't know why.
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: It really hit me.
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: I was just like, I like that you guys played that straight.
- 33:04SPEAKER_03: Like, I actually it was funner to I I just could believe that that interaction.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: I think you dropped out.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: Oh, I have oh sorry, I missed that.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: I I yeah, yeah, I missed that entire like segment there, sorry.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: But you just all the listeners got it.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I like to have sneaky conversations one-on-one with listeners when you're not when you're not here.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: Um the other uh what was I okay, the one thing I did have issue with actually well clearly there's lots of things I had issues with, but I didn't like That's so funny.
- 33:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah I've just realized I haven't even said what this is this is rated on Rotten Tomatoes, please say it it is a oh god, where I've got to find it now again.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Um while you're searching for that I'm gonna go.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: There's a really annoying bit in the movie for me where Imhotep is seeing the the kids seeing the kid.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: There's a kid in this movie, uh, and he goes, You have strength, like you are your father's son.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: And in my head, I'm like, Do you even know him that well?
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: Like you don't know he was just some guy that showed up and shot you in the face and stopped you.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: Well, you're saying, like, oh yeah, we go way back, you he's that I'm the villain, and it's just like you don't fucking know him.
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: Like you relax, like yeah, so it got that got my tits a little bit, I would say.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: It's interesting Is it it is interesting as well how like they've so one of the things I did read was like so it's two years so it's literally two years after the first one came out, but they've they've said it ten years later.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: Um and that was because they wanted a kid in it, but they didn't want a ch like a baby.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: That's what they've said.
- 34:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:47SPEAKER_03: I get that.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: But also, if you know for fans of the franchise, you'll know when the third one comes along, the uh the British child becomes an American uh grown-up.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen the third one.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: It was really well, I always really loved it as a kid.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: I remember watching it.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: Um and it was just very like and I well, I think they were just lazy.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: They were just like, let's run this out.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't know how to make him English and cool.
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: I think that was kind of the logic of it.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: Um I do think it's sorry, go on.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, finish.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's great, he's great.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: I wish he was in so much more stuff now.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: Like he he was like this was a like period of time where he was in everything and like suddenly everything again.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: It's such a shame too much.
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: Well, he's he's been in some stuff.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: He was in Touch of Cloth, and and he was in, he's the bad guy in the Dirk Gentley's holistic detective agency, the TV version that they did a while back.
- 35:42SPEAKER_03: And so he's been around.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: I also used to see him in in the Olin Steam that I worked at.
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: He would come in and get a sourdough, and I didn't say anything to him, but I was very like, oh my god, dude, the mummy, like every time I saw him.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: Um that'd be fun, really funny if you're like, my god, mummy.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: Mummy, yeah.
- 36:04SPEAKER_03: Mummy.
- 36:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, literally.
- 36:05SPEAKER_03: I think he did know that I knew, and I think he probably a lot of people woke up to you like mummy, mummy.
- 36:14SPEAKER_03: So he was but he was uh yeah, he's just great in this movie.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: I think I think they they they struck a very particular kind of gold, I think, with this movie.
- 36:22SPEAKER_03: And something you can't recreate, because Guy Ritchie tried with that fountain of use shit, and I think that looks terrible, and it's clearly so trying to do it.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: That looks awful, like mommy, yeah.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: I can't believe they that that just came and went as well.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Like nobody wanted to see that.
- 36:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because Guy Ritchie just makes he just is like, I have to make five movies a year or something, just like yeah, this is something I'm not understanding what's going on at the moment with him.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: Like, where where is this coming from?
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: He's just locked in, man.
- 36:49SPEAKER_03: I think he just doesn't like his kids or something.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: He's just like, I gotta keep making now.
- 36:53SPEAKER_03: I have to make this John Krasinski treasure movie or whatever for Apple.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but his but his his his his catalogue is so all over the place now.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: Like, where where is this going?
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: To go through five, six, five, six gangster movies in a row to like whatever these like he's gone to Aladdin and this and yeah, he really jumps all around.
- 37:16SPEAKER_03: Um, and I hate the gentleman.
- 37:18SPEAKER_03: I think that's just a fucking garbage movie.
- 37:19SPEAKER_03: I think that's just so bad.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: And um garbage movie, who am I?
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: My my wife's American for the listeners, that's why I'm saying that.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: Um but the uh uh it's a bin movie.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: It's bin.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: It's garbage.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: That's a bin movie.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, bin movie.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: But the um but this movie is well back to back to the to the to the mummy routine.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: I think um there was also there's a it just kind of worked for me this morning.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it's just like the escapism of it, but I I was like really buying into the world building of it.
- 37:52SPEAKER_03: I like the kind of weird treasure hunt that there's like this whole cavalcade of thieves and bandits who are trying to like get these things.
- 38:01SPEAKER_03: It's fly fun.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: I do love like do you do you have a history with like B movies from like the 30s or anything like that?
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: Or like do you have a lot of people?
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: No, I I've never seen any of them.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, I I was a big I was a big Indiana Jones kid.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: I used to dress up.
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: I used to wear a hat and run around and do that.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and um I will say actually, while we were here, my friend Josh was his thing, and I have a brown leather jacket, a la uh Indiana Jones.
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: And he also had his brown leather jacket that he brought with him.
- 38:31SPEAKER_03: So we were rolling deep, like trying to see who who could be more indie with it, like who could be more like oh you gotta get the hat.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: You gotta bring the hat with you.
- 38:40SPEAKER_03: I know we uh it's uh I do like the hat, but it's it's I'm not a hat guy.
- 38:47SPEAKER_03: I don't know, so I don't mean to take your question earnestly there, but I you've gotta get the whip and hat.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe I should.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: Oh god, maybe I need to branch out.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: I did have this summer, I don't know if you had this, but I was very much like, I need a weird hat.
- 39:03SPEAKER_03: I need to get a weird hat in my wife.
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: A weird hat.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just like No, I never had the weird hat.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: I was just I I always tried to get a hat, just a hat in general, and I was like, I've I've started wearing baseball caps again, which like they're they're they're okay, but like anything beyond that, I don't know.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: I wear a beanie if it's cold, but that's okay.
- 39:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:22SPEAKER_03: Well So well, like you know Earl's sweatshirt, the rapper?
- 39:27SPEAKER_03: He he came back and he had an album where he had this kind of it was almost like a cool wizard's hat.
- 39:32SPEAKER_03: It was like a bucket hat stroke wizard's hat.
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: But I mean I'll send you a little bit of a big one.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, he loves a bucket hat, yeah.
- 39:38SPEAKER_03: But I just thought it looked so sick, and I was like, I need that, I need something like that with my wife.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: I need to see a bucket hat that's also a wizard's hat.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: That's that sounds amazing.
- 39:47SPEAKER_03: I was more wizard hat by energy than it was shape, I will say.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: It wasn't that pointy, but you'll see what I mean when you see it.
- 39:54SPEAKER_03: It was like, and I was like, I need to I could I could get into some of that.
- 39:58SPEAKER_03: I could rock with that.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: Um But yeah, like this we've gone on a tangent, but that this is this is such a like a uh a spiritual sequel to these movies are such a spiritual spiritual sequel to Indiana Jones.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: They're like Yeah, oh completely.
- 40:14SPEAKER_03: You can feel it all over.
- 40:16SPEAKER_03: Um and I just like that it does it so confidently and slow, like being like, Yeah, we love that movie, we're referencing that movie.
- 40:21SPEAKER_03: That was like a uh it's a it's a cool world to be in.
- 40:25SPEAKER_03: And again, like just for the kids, like it it it it that all hits like you could like cling cling and doing act outs and sword fights and stuff and and all this sort of all this sort of business.
- 40:35SPEAKER_02: It's ridiculous.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: Um Yeah, it's such a fun movie, and I think like I think what I think the downfall of this movie, and I won't say the downfall, because I don't think it's like I don't think it's a bad movie in any sense.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: I think I think there are bad aspects of it, but I think overall it's a it's a really fun movie.
- 40:53SPEAKER_01: If you if you enjoy it for what it is, if if you're like going in and and like going, this is gonna be it's don't take it seriously, it's gonna be s it's gonna be silly, it's gonna have like stupid stuff in it.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: It's really fun.
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: It's the the issues I have with it are there are two things.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: One is the CGI, which you know, it is what it is, uh we can live with that.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: Can we?
- 41:17SPEAKER_03: Can we?
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 41:19SPEAKER_03: I don't know if we can.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: You're the one defending it.
- 41:23SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, shit, damn it.
- 41:25SPEAKER_03: We switched roles.
- 41:26SPEAKER_03: You can sorry, go on.
- 41:28SPEAKER_03: You were in the middle of a thought.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: The second the second thing I and this is where this is the only thing about the about the movie that I really don't like.
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: The kid.
- 41:38SPEAKER_03: The kid's fucking annoying, yeah.
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: Can you imagine?
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: I bet he was a piece of shit on set, dude.
- 41:43SPEAKER_03: I I already I was just like, fuck this kid, man.
- 41:45SPEAKER_03: You're not Rick, you're not Rick's true son.
- 41:48SPEAKER_03: I am, I am Rick's son.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: He he tries his best, and you can see the logic of it almost has an Indiana Jones logic of like that's exactly what they've gone for.
- 41:57SPEAKER_03: We need a non-racist short round here, and like we need to we need to get him in, and it nearly works, but like needed a non-racist short round.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: Let's get a white kid.
- 42:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we can't fuck up the white kid, you know what I mean?
- 42:10SPEAKER_03: We can't get no one away mad at us, we cry.
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: But there is a great moment.
- 42:13SPEAKER_03: There's a lot of weird moments in this film when you're watching where there's no uh cohesion between the shots you're seeing, so like when the bracelet slaps on his wrist and it takes it and he's like shaking around and stuff.
- 42:25SPEAKER_03: It's so bizarre to watch, and you're just like it's um I also also I do like how the magic is explained in like two seconds.
- 42:33SPEAKER_03: Like you're just like it's like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:35SPEAKER_03: Come on, keep rolling on, keep going, keep going.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: Um but it's it's it's so interesting because like I think it's so funny that they saw Star Wars episode one and were like, Yeah, we still gotta put a kid in it.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: We still gotta do like two.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't know.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: Like, let's let's see if this kid gets uh weird death threats for his portrayal of this kid.
- 42:58SPEAKER_03: Do you remember that happened to that poor kid?
- 43:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's that's crazy.
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: That's just like, yeah, I fear that I fear for that kid.
- 43:04SPEAKER_03: And also, by the way, it's poor kid.
- 43:07SPEAKER_03: I feel bad about and it's just like, yeah, I I I fear for all kid actors.
- 43:11SPEAKER_03: Whenever I see a kid actor, I'm like, well, they're good.
- 43:13SPEAKER_03: Okay, like yeah, especially in 2001.
- 43:16SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, he could be a whole different player.
- 43:18SPEAKER_03: He's probably our age.
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: He's I s I looked it up and he's he's two years younger than me.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: Which pissed me off.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: I was like, no, you can't be younger than me.
- 43:26SPEAKER_03: What's he up to?
- 43:27SPEAKER_03: What's he doing?
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: Uh he hasn't done anything in a while.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Like he he he just like did some like little bit parts over the years.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: He never really liked so it didn't really take off after this, which is a shame, because also the other thing I read was that he turned down a Harry Potter audition to do this.
- 43:43SPEAKER_03: Did he?
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: To to audition for this.
- 43:45SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: He So like he it's good he got the part, but at the same time, he could have been Harry Potter.
- 43:51SPEAKER_03: I don't think he's got the goods.
- 43:53SPEAKER_03: I don't think he could have been Harry Potter.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: He wouldn't have been cast as Harry Potter.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry to say, like, he's yeah, he's too broad and too Yeah.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 44:03SPEAKER_03: But also, like, you got yeah.
- 44:04SPEAKER_03: I I do wonder just mentioning Harry Potter.
- 44:07SPEAKER_03: I've been thinking a lot about this HBO Harry Potter show that's coming out.
- 44:10SPEAKER_03: I'm just like, who the fuck is that for?
- 44:13SPEAKER_03: Like, who is it for?
- 44:14SPEAKER_03: Because kids are gonna get the worst, have the worst time ever.
- 44:18SPEAKER_03: They're gonna be just it's just a it's like even outside of of the fact that J.K.
- 44:23SPEAKER_03: Rowling's actively rolled back uh human rights in this country, like even outside of that, yeah, who is left to enjoy that?
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: Like, I think who's left?
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: I think you I think you will be surprised.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: I actually think you'll be surprised by how like I think we this is something I think of like people in comedy and people in the world of film and TV and everything.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: I think we are so insular to like what's going on within these things, and then you look at like the general public and they're like, Oh no, I will watch this stuff anyway.
- 44:52SPEAKER_01: I am so obsessed with this show, or I'm so obsessed with this book, or whatever.
- 44:55SPEAKER_01: Like they they make Yeah, there are people that have it as their whole personality still to this day and do not care what these people are saying, and I'm like, I'm still blown away by that.
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: No, but it's it's just like nuts.
- 45:06SPEAKER_03: And I just there's also a great thing I saw recently they said they've cast Voldemort, but they're not gonna reveal who it is until he appears on the show.
- 45:14SPEAKER_03: And then my head, I'm like, I'm gonna, I'm gonna because they wanna I guess they wanna keep a secret or whoever fucking cares.
- 45:19SPEAKER_03: Who cares?
- 45:19SPEAKER_03: And then it's just like but in my head, I'm like, great, I can't wait to find out which British actor I have to not doesn't care about trans people, you know what I mean?
- 45:27SPEAKER_03: I'm like, oh great.
- 45:28SPEAKER_03: It's like they're like, oh, could it be Matt Smith or Killian Murphy?
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, I don't want to, don't, don't do this.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: No, don't don't ruin these people for us.
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: Don't ruin more people.
- 45:36SPEAKER_01: Like I the another thing I saw was that they they've they've just done this radio, they're doing this like radio or like audiobook thing with all of with like these new cast members and everything.
- 45:45SPEAKER_03: Oh don't even tell me.
- 45:46SPEAKER_03: I'm just having uh there's only so there's only so many uh actors from succession that are safe.
- 45:52SPEAKER_03: Like I'm losing losing them left and right, man.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: Oh now now I feel bad telling you who because it is a character, it's a guy from succession as one of them.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: It's Matthew, it's Matthew McFadden.
- 46:03SPEAKER_03: Oh I got him, I knew it, I knew it.
- 46:05SPEAKER_03: Because they got the director of Succession's filming the show.
- 46:09SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's a shame.
- 46:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a shame, isn't it?
- 46:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's just like it's just uh it's just uh it's just a bloody shame.
- 46:15SPEAKER_03: But luckily, we can flash back to 2001.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when this was a proverb.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: Pre-9-11.
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: Pre-9 Take me back, Stephen Summers.
- 46:27SPEAKER_03: Take me back.
- 46:28SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't want to Where's the Mummy HBO TV show?
- 46:32SPEAKER_03: I'd watch the fuck out of that.
- 46:34SPEAKER_03: I'd watch that show.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: That would be so good.
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: Do you okay?
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: Actually, that brings me on to something else about this.
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: Is like, do you remember when they tried to well they they did reboot this, but they tried to like uh do a reboot of like the dark what they call the dark universe?
- 46:48SPEAKER_03: Do you remember the dark universe cinematic universe, yeah?
- 46:52SPEAKER_03: Oh, of course.
- 46:53SPEAKER_03: I never watched it, but I was like me and my friends.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: There was like two movies, nothing came of it.
- 46:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, honestly.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: I I didn't watch it, and like I would have though.
- 47:02SPEAKER_03: I had too much I held too much of a candle for the original mummy.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, I didn't know.
- 47:06SPEAKER_03: This is not my mummy, yeah.
- 47:07SPEAKER_03: This is not my mummy, this is not my beautiful mummy.
- 47:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: This is not my beautiful mummy.
- 47:15SPEAKER_03: Uh you may find yourself in a cinema watching a franchise.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: We're Tom Cruise.
- 47:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:24SPEAKER_03: This is not my beautiful Tom.
- 47:27SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, it's it's um area ref.
- 47:30SPEAKER_01: Give me Brendan or nothing.
- 47:31SPEAKER_03: Like Yeah, truly.
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: Like, they should they should oh god, Brendan Brent what they need to do is bring back they need to reboot it.
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: Not not even reboot it, but like bring it back with these with this car and do something else.
- 47:45SPEAKER_01: Along like it would crush, it would be so good.
- 47:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it would be fun.
- 47:51SPEAKER_03: Like, I mean, you know, I I don't see I think maybe they must have the rights tied up with something, like they sold it to those guys or whatever, and they couldn't do it, yeah.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: And it's such a shame because like everyone, like all all the adults in this are so good.
- 48:08SPEAKER_01: Uh I say that except for the rock.
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: I would say they're all grown up.
- 48:11SPEAKER_03: All the grown-ups.
- 48:13SPEAKER_03: It's why grown-ups should be actors and not kids, you know.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: Grown-ups are all so good at it.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: I whoever plays grown-ups need to play kids.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I I I just want to say as well, Ard Death, the actor of Ardeath is so good in this.
- 48:29SPEAKER_03: Like, I think he can't he gets that tone so right.
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: Everyone gets the tone so perfect with this.
- 48:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:35SPEAKER_03: Um the actor of Imotep, I think, particularly, where he plays it very he's got the uh gravitas and the and the sort of majesty, but it's still with a little wink.
- 48:45SPEAKER_03: It's still with a little something.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean they have to get it.
- 48:48SPEAKER_01: They have to play it with a wink to extend, but like it because it's again, it's they're playing it for for the fun of it.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: They know it's not.
- 48:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: They know it's just a blockbuster movie.
- 48:59SPEAKER_01: And they know Yeah.
- 49:01SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: It's uh Yeah, people are really misunderstanding these these movies.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: I think like it's so frustrating.
- 49:10SPEAKER_01: So like Again, I still I think we still never mention the the the rating it had.
- 49:15SPEAKER_01: Uh we don't even get to that, I'm sorry.
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: It's it's uh 46% on from the critics.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: But the other thing, the other thing I've just seen that's really disappointing, the audience score is 63.
- 49:29SPEAKER_01: And that's really surprising.
- 49:31SPEAKER_03: I think uh true fans will be like it is it is quite exhausting by the end, I will say.
- 49:38SPEAKER_03: And like in terms of sequels, obviously in the first movie you have this iconic sand face where they're flying and they you know trying to buy, but then they do water face in this one and it doesn't quite cut the mustard, it's just not quite the same.
- 49:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:52SPEAKER_03: And uh and they do basically just rehash a lot of the same stuff.
- 49:58SPEAKER_01: That's what the the complaints are, it seems to be.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: It's like one of the one of the reviews here I'm just looking at now, it even says, um, feels like treading the same old ground, and that's likely because no one here has really evolved.
- 50:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah, completely.
- 50:11SPEAKER_03: It's like and well, just because the the mummy shouldn't, you know, it it's a it's such a it's one of it's like Back to the Future.
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't think Back to the Future should have had sequels, honestly.
- 50:20SPEAKER_03: I think it should have just been that one movie, and we wouldn't have to I mean the first movie is perfect.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: Second exactly and then I I like the second movie, I don't love the third one, but like yeah Yeah, yeah.
- 50:32SPEAKER_03: Well the third one they were just like oh fuck it, cowboys, they were just like they didn't really have anything left.
- 50:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: And I I just think sometimes movies there should just be one, and like it would have just been and and the mummy is certainly that, and I think a lot of people probably do think that, but I do think they gave it a good fucking go.
- 50:51SPEAKER_03: I think so too.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: I yeah, I think I I I absolutely think so.
- 50:54SPEAKER_01: I think they should never have been a third one.
- 50:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the the the the the the the two of the dragon emperor is not great, and Stephen Summers isn't in it, and you know, obviously.
- 51:04SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's right, it is like you you get Michelle Yo, and like it's and she's great, but it's pretty thankless and like uh and Jet Lays, isn't it?
- 51:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think so.
- 51:14SPEAKER_03: Is he in it?
- 51:15SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, man, they both just did nothing.
- 51:18SPEAKER_03: They both were just like it's yours.
- 51:20SPEAKER_03: It's they they didn't get to do what they famously do, and it was a shame.
- 51:24SPEAKER_03: But then they do although I would hold a candle for the the set piece in the third one when they're in um uh where are they?
- 51:34SPEAKER_03: Is it Shanghai?
- 51:35SPEAKER_01: I actually don't know.
- 51:36SPEAKER_03: I don't let me find They do this chase through the through the streets and it's at this casino and they're all in like black tie and stuff, and it's quite like it's very campy and it does work in this weird way, and I thought and I so I I yeah, so I I I I will defend that, yeah.
- 51:52SPEAKER_01: I mean it it it's that one has 13%.
- 51:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, see diminishing returns, you know?
- 51:58SPEAKER_01: I mean it is diminishing returns, it's gone it's 62 for the first one, which I think is ridiculous.
- 52:03SPEAKER_01: That is way too low.
- 52:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's it's a real it's not ideal.
- 52:10SPEAKER_03: It's not it's not ideal.
- 52:11SPEAKER_03: And I don't think it's a lot of people.
- 52:13SPEAKER_03: I think that was very much like just like let's do it because we have to get one more out.
- 52:18SPEAKER_03: I think movies think that movie people think that way, but we need at least.
- 52:21SPEAKER_01: Oh, for sure.
- 52:22SPEAKER_03: Um so yeah, yeah.
- 52:24SPEAKER_01: If you like so like one of the things I'm noticing now is it's like is a thing of they're doing a lot at the moment with this uh this thing of there's a movie that was really successful 30 years ago.
- 52:37SPEAKER_01: Let's make a sequel now.
- 52:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:40SPEAKER_03: Are any of those good?
- 52:41SPEAKER_03: I can't I don't know if I've seen one that's good.
- 52:43SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: No.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: They're never good, they never work.
- 52:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 52:47SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, yeah.
- 52:49SPEAKER_03: And I've just seen a smart thing, yeah.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: I've just seen one where it's they just I just saw a trailer for This Is Spinal Tap 2.
- 52:55SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, what are you doing?
- 52:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's kind of like it could, I could see it working, but it's like just make a new music mockumentary.
- 53:02SPEAKER_03: Like, just do like that they it would hit the same beats, but like I um I love Michael McKean though, so he can kind of think he's great, yeah.
- 53:12SPEAKER_03: I've I really work with him.
- 53:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, everyone in it is just doing the same lines again though, and you're like, oh, is it gonna it's gonna be this again, isn't it?
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: It's not you're not gonna change anything.
- 53:21SPEAKER_03: No, completely, but it's like it's but they just there's also the naked gun one that just came out once though, and like people.
- 53:28SPEAKER_01: But I've heard that is ac I've heard that is actually good.
- 53:30SPEAKER_03: But that's the thing, there's no rhyme or reason to which of them is good or bad.
- 53:34SPEAKER_03: It's just like we've got to just run out all of the the fucking projects we have or all the fucking IP we have and see what's happening.
- 53:40SPEAKER_01: There's Happy Gilmore 2 that's just come out, and that's I haven't seen it, but uh that again that looks a lot of like let's throw in a celebrity cameo and and do the same lines that we did from the first one.
- 53:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I I love I am an Adam Sandler defender and I love Sandler, especially Happy Gilmore.
- 53:57SPEAKER_03: I think that's probably my favourite one of his.
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: Like I think it's just a perfect vehicle, and I I like it more than the water boy, and and uh oh, I do.
- 54:07SPEAKER_03: Maybe Daddy Daycare.
- 54:08SPEAKER_03: I do like Daddy Day.
- 54:08SPEAKER_03: Uh not Daddy Daycare, Daddy Daddy's Big Daddy, yeah.
- 54:13SPEAKER_03: Too many daddy.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: I love I clearly have I love parental.
- 54:17SPEAKER_03: Daddy and Mummy, you love Daddy and Mummy, yeah, yeah.
- 54:19SPEAKER_03: Mummy returns, Daddy's home.
- 54:21SPEAKER_03: I that's like clearly I'm yearning for something.
- 54:27SPEAKER_03: Um but alas.
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like so other other than that, like is there anything about this movie that you like you genuinely want to like go to bat and defend?
- 54:37SPEAKER_01: Uh is there anything specific?
- 54:39SPEAKER_01: It's it Is there any character you want to defend that that like you that you think is that is overlooked or I I think no more than I have already.
- 54:48SPEAKER_03: I will say watching it this time, I realized the r the the thing with Imotep's girlfriend.
- 54:55SPEAKER_03: Uh and forgive me, I've forgotten her name.
- 54:57SPEAKER_03: It's I was watching it and I was like, oh, I think this I think she's in a serious psychological number of me when I watched this at a tender age.
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: I think there was something in like a lot of people talk about the mummy as their like you know, sexual awakening or their bisexual awakening because there's so many fitties in it.
- 55:14SPEAKER_03: But there was something in watching it this time where I was like, okay, yeah, that definitely there's some stuff, there's some stuff at play.
- 55:22SPEAKER_03: But also I love how she's so what was she in it for, man?
- 55:26SPEAKER_03: Because she's like raising him a tap and she's like, and he's all gross, and she's like, I love this, I'm super down with this.
- 55:32SPEAKER_03: This is hot as fuck.
- 55:33SPEAKER_03: And then the second he's a little needy, she just bails.
- 55:37SPEAKER_03: He like, you know, he he like he's like save because she it's supposed that's the bit that annoys me a little bit, but I will I do it does make me laugh a lot, where like he there's a bit where where Rick O'Connell is gonna die, and he's like, get out of here, Evie, but Evie saves him, and then the opposite happens with Immotep, where Immotep is like, please save me, and she's like, No, I'm out of here.
- 56:00SPEAKER_03: Like that actually kind of grossed me out the way you asked me to save you from the the hordes of the undead that would brought you back to hell.
- 56:06SPEAKER_03: And it was like it just really made me laugh because I was like, What the were you just fucking around?
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: Were you just like um and her name is Mila or Anksunamun?
- 56:19SPEAKER_03: Aksunamoon, of course.
- 56:20SPEAKER_03: Anoxunamoon, yeah, because he says that his delivery of Anoxunamoon is really great.
- 56:24SPEAKER_03: And he was like, Anoxunamoon.
- 56:26SPEAKER_03: And we've all been there, King.
- 56:27SPEAKER_03: We've all been there, King.
- 56:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, listen.
- 56:30SPEAKER_01: Um but I think I was just gonna say, like, what I was trying to look at what what's he what else he's done.
- 56:36SPEAKER_01: Because he's so good.
- 56:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he is really good.
- 56:39SPEAKER_03: He like I think he really it's not an easy part to get right, neither.
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: Like, that's I would put him in one of the big iconic uh uh lists of villains, I think.
- 56:50SPEAKER_03: Um maybe top twenty.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: I I honestly I can I'm not gonna argue with that.
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: I can't.
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: Okay, sweet.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: I'm glad I I'm not gonna argue with that.
- 57:00SPEAKER_01: He's great in it.
- 57:01SPEAKER_01: He's he's a very good villain.
- 57:02SPEAKER_01: He's very good.
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: As long as we can have the conversation, you know, because it's so hard to discuss things these days.
- 57:07SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, the um he's no, he's great.
- 57:11SPEAKER_03: And I think but I I don't think I I just think yeah, I would go back to saying Ardeth.
- 57:16SPEAKER_03: I think he's just a really great foil for everybody, and they play off each other really well.
- 57:21SPEAKER_01: They do, they do.
- 57:22SPEAKER_01: He's so they're both so fun.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: And like I I again, like everyone in this movie is so fun.
- 57:26SPEAKER_01: I wish that I so wish that the third ended up being like Well, they were really just trying to oh sorry, go on, no, you go, you go.
- 57:35SPEAKER_01: I just say I was gonna say, like, this is gonna get darker, but like everything that happened with Brendan Fraser and everything, I just felt so bad, and they're like, I'm so glad he decided to have a comeback.
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: And I just I just hope the best for him as well.
- 57:46SPEAKER_03: Like Yeah, of course.
- 57:48SPEAKER_03: Like, and he really he um he is a really terrific actor, and like he has a real I haven't seen the whale because it felt like it was a fever dream I had and I didn't want to watch it.
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: It is a it's a fever dream of a movie, I'm not gonna lie, it's not it's not the greatest, but like he it's a great it's a very good performance in a in a in a role that he probably shouldn't be doing to be but yeah, he's really good in I watched recently The Killers of the Flower Moon.
- 58:13SPEAKER_03: Have you seen this?
- 58:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's so good in that movie, and it's like a completely different role that I've seen him do, and like yeah and a ri and he he he's just so fabulous in that.
- 58:24SPEAKER_01: He's really like, yeah.
- 58:26SPEAKER_01: He's got a new movie coming out called Rental Family that looks amazing.
- 58:30SPEAKER_01: It looks great, and I've heard he's very, very good in it.
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: And like I just hope movies are made for him to do his particular thing.
- 58:37SPEAKER_03: Because I remember I was a big part of the Brenaissance.
- 58:39SPEAKER_03: Like, I was really down with him.
- 58:41SPEAKER_03: I've always spelled the candle for him.
- 58:42SPEAKER_03: I love like Journey to the Center of the Earth.
- 58:45SPEAKER_03: I loved like um uh b uh Bedazzled.
- 58:50SPEAKER_03: Bedazzled, yeah.
- 58:51SPEAKER_03: Bedazzled's great.
- 58:52SPEAKER_03: Uh Back to the Part.
- 58:53SPEAKER_03: What's the one where he was like, well, look who's back?
- 58:56SPEAKER_03: Or not Look Who's Back.
- 58:57SPEAKER_03: Uh it's like he's a guy who's frozen in time and then he cut he wakes up in modern day and he's been raised in Saturday and stuff, and it's called Felicia Silverstone.
- 59:04SPEAKER_01: Drop not I was gonna say Drop Dead Gorgeous.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: It's not what that's not the one.
- 59:07SPEAKER_01: It's um Oh god, what is it called?
- 59:10SPEAKER_01: It's so good as well.
- 59:11SPEAKER_03: It's a really great Last From the Past, yeah, and he's really good in it, and like he's so I think he is such a uh unique leading man across all of those, and and was just a really interesting actor, and like I just yeah, I'm glad I'm glad as well that he's able to keep doing keep doing stuff.
- 59:30SPEAKER_01: Um I'm so glad that he's like come back and like actually get into do things, but like he's yeah, obviously Rachel Weiss went on to do so much stuff, and he's like went on with to win an Oscar and like Yeah, Rachel Weiss is Rachel Weiss.
- 59:44SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, you can't like that's why everyone is so genius.
- 59:47SPEAKER_01: Now married to Daniel Craig.
- 59:49SPEAKER_03: Yes, exactly.
- 59:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:50SPEAKER_03: They they you see them at those Lue uh fashion shows where they're both dressed like some crazy shit, and it's like, yeah, that's that kind of rocks, actually.
- 59:59SPEAKER_03: I think that's cool.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_03: Daniel Craig's the fucking man as well.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_03: Oh, he's great.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_03: I was um watching an interview with him recently with um Mark Camod.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_03: Did you see that at the panel?
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_03: No, I didn't see it.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_03: It was like a it was a retrospective of his career.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_03: Oh nice, and I think and he's just he's just such an interesting guy.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_03: Like, I just think he's a really he his choices are so interesting.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and again, I guess we're coming full circle, but he makes casino royale work, like he easily makes that work.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_03: Like he and it's no mean feat, like it is not an easy thing he was doing.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_03: He makes it look effortless, and he's um I I just I just think he's sick, and I love all his choices, post Bond, and and I and yeah.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I love it Daniel.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_03: If you're listening, yeah, shout out Daniel Craig.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_01: He's my first subscriber, so that's perfect.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_03: Patreon, just for and you and it's only a five-pound tier?
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, you can't go, you can't go up for Daniel.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_03: It's like Daniel can't stretch them all in five or a month.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_01: No, no, it's all he can afford.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_01: Oh that's it's that bomb budget.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's the only guy with two first names that I trust.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_03: He really is.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_01: Like that's actually a great joke.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_03: Thank you, yeah.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_03: Well, hey, thank you.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_03: Hey, you're welcome, Patreon subscribers.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_03: You're welcome, Daniel.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_03: That joke.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay, so let's talk about let's move on to the end to the final segment, which is the reverse of this, which is a movie that you uh that is critically loved and well reviewed that you actually think is bad.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_01: Did you manage to think of one?
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_01: Because I know you were struggling with that.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_01: Well, you had one, but I I vetoed it because it's the one that everyone picked, which is Lala Land.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_03: Shout fuck Lala Land forever, obviously.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, but I have two, and they might be controversial, which is uh I hate Heat, and I think Reservoir Dogs sucks.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_01: I think they're both like, yeah, interesting because I feel like they're very they're kind of similar movies in many ways.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_03: I think look, okay, uh, I'll do it one at a time.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_03: Heat is just boring.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_03: Like it's just like really like it's just like I don't get I mean, obviously you have that great scene of Al Pacino being like she's got a great ass and all that stuff, but like everyone loves Al Pacino yelling.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_03: Like I rewatched Oceans 13 recently, and he does some primo Al Pacino yelling in there.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_03: But um the rest of it I just didn't get.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_03: I just didn't buy in.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_03: I didn't think it was cool, I didn't like it.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_03: I like I just thought it was like interesting.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_03: I don't think it's that interesting to uh strip back the whole thing was that like it strips back and makes minimalist all the sort of classic action movie stuff, which like yeah, I guess at the time was cool, but I really just don't think it's that impressive or that interesting.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_03: And um and so that was why I didn't like that.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_03: I think the acting in that is great.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_03: I do think they they I mean you can't really fault the term of course, like and and I that and the cafe scene holds up, like it's a really great.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it does.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_03: I love all that stuff, and I think people have been trying to recreate something with that kind of tension for for uh years, like that kind of like you know because it's it's slow down to like what I like in movies, which is just like these really great acting choices and this real great moment, right?
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and similarly, Reservoir Dogs, I think is just like this what people what dudes think is really good acting.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_03: It's what's something I call dude acting, which is like this big, like how could you portray me?
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_01: Kind of big, like you fucking like I'm gesticulating over here, like and it's it's that have you seen during you you're like quite big on tick like quite big on the TikTok stuff, so like I I feel like you must have seen the uh that that video that would go around of like the best movies of all time, and it's just guys yelling.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, completely, yeah, it's exactly that, and like it's such a weird I think it's like frankly, it's because everyone's a critic, so everyone thinks they know movies now, even though all we do is I think and but I think it's just because we all watch movies all the time, so we think we have to have some kind of academic sense of it because we're all just watching shit all the fucking time.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and um I just think I I watched it late, so I think the first I like a lot of Tarantino movies.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_03: What's late?
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_01: What do you mean?
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_03: Uh as in like like two years ago, I think I watched Reservoir Dogs for the first time.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_03: And the first one I watched of his was Inglorious Bastards, which I think is great.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_01: That yeah, and I think that does scene at a table between two people really well.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's like a great movie, and it's interesting and it's weird, and and it's all the things that people like about Tarantino.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_03: And I like all that stuff, but it's Reservoir Dogs, it just felt like so over the top and so Yeah, I don't love Reservoir Dogs, to be honest.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_01: It's not it's not I wouldn't pick it as like one of my one of his best.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_03: I I don't know, I've got I've really gone off him though, so I I also like Yeah, I mean he's also you know going on fucking TV and saying like Israel's just like California, actually.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_03: We should be all super cool about it.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's like a thing on we don't I don't want to end on a bummer no, but there's this Bill Maher segment where he goes on his story.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_01: Of course he goes on Bill Maher as well to say it.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know, two two of the fucking just idiots.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_03: Anyway, the but like the um I also love it's just like I I just really think Reservoir Dogs is is is doesn't I quite I didn't quite pass the smell test for me and like I guess on paper, but it was just like not it.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_03: And it was just like watching these guys do these scenes.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_03: I will say the last bit of that movie where I think it's Tim Roth is bleeding out and he's like, I'm a cop.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_03: That made me I laughed out loud.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_03: I just thought it was such a funny way to end a movie of like all this tension of like you're my brother and like we're in it together.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_03: It's like oh I'm a cop like that, and it really made me laugh.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_03: And I don't know if it's written to be funny like that, but it's I don't think it is.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's written to be funny.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I just like it's just such a ludicrous movie, and it was definitely an era of the AC.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_03: Oh, for sure, yeah.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_01: It began the era of it began that that's the one that started that whole kind of like indie guys being dudes, sort of.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_01: You know, like we can say what we can talk about generic stuff and it doesn't have to be related to the movie, you know, like Yeah, completely.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_03: Um what was that Edward Norton Gene Hackman movie?
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: The um The score?
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_03: Not Gene Hackman, sorry.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_03: No, uh well, the one where Edward Norton's a murderer, or he's on trial for murder.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, uh Primal Fear.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_03: I thank you, I just couldn't remember it.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_03: Primal Fear is a if if you want to watch some real dude acting and that, that is that to a T.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_03: It is so funny.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_03: Uh because there's I was watching this one scene and the amount of movement the the the uh I haven't seen that in so many years.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_01: It's um Richard Gere.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_03: Richard Gere, sorry, uh does is so funny.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_03: And it's him and Andre Brouwer, and they're both like at a 10 and this like dumbass like acting thing.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_03: Andre Brower is pretty solid in that, honestly.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_03: I mean he is in everything, so yeah, and it but it was like yeah, so that's another one if you want to watch that kind of acting.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen that in a long, long time, but I remember like really enjoying it when it came when I saw it.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I again there was a lot of stuff I watched as like a teenager that I feel like that I've got into now, and I'm like, this is gonna be awful.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_01: That's why I felt like that's that's why I was a bit dubious about going back to the Mummy Returns, because I was like, oh, I don't know if it's gonna be I don't know if it's gonna hold up.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_01: It does hold up, but it's yeah.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_03: It it it nearly holds up.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_03: It is I think it holds up in the way that I imagine I felt how audiences felt at the time, where it was just like, yeah, this was good enough, but let's not do it again.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_03: Like, let's like lose it.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_03: Um and and we were all proven right for that.
