- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, Jeff Lagwell, brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 0:02Speaker 1: of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. You start with
- 0:05Speaker 1: a job, you end with a career, Jeff, I want
- 0:08Speaker 1: to start with a kind of a prediction based question.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Dak Prescott. Four consecutive games with three or more passing
- 0:16Speaker 1: touchdowns and no interceptions. That's the longest streak in Cowboys history,
- 0:21Speaker 1: tied for the second longest streak in NFL history. Does
- 0:26Speaker 1: that streak end on Sunday?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Well, I'm gonna say it will have its toughest challenge
- 0:33Speaker 2: this Sunday.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Yep.
- 0:36Speaker 2: He is on a heater, that's for sure, and that
- 0:38Speaker 2: their whole offense is and I'm not sure anybody would
- 0:42Speaker 2: guess in all of that that it's their tight end
- 0:45Speaker 2: that leads them in targets in the passing games. So
- 0:49Speaker 2: it's a pretty diversified deal that they're just sort of
- 0:53Speaker 2: now working CD Lamb back into. And when you've done
- 0:57Speaker 2: all that, you haven't had Lamb time. I think it
- 1:00Speaker 2: says a lot about that offense. But this, this will
- 1:03Speaker 2: be his toughest challenge, and it will probably be the
- 1:06Speaker 2: Broncos toughest challenge. Dude.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Yeah, Jake Ferguson. How did the Broncos match up with him? What?
- 1:12Speaker 1: What is the plan there?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Well, they better have one. I mean, we just saw
- 1:17Speaker 2: a game where two tight ends who aren't nearly as
- 1:21Speaker 2: good as Jake Ferguson both had big play touchdowns against
- 1:25Speaker 2: the Broncos. Uh, and they've had their difficulties this year
- 1:29Speaker 2: against the tight end. I don't think we have to,
- 1:32Speaker 2: you know, the Indie game this past Sunday. I mean,
- 1:36Speaker 2: they've had their moments when people have isolated the Broncos
- 1:40Speaker 2: linebackers and coverage and succeeded. So that's definitely I gotta
- 1:46Speaker 2: believe John A. Bearn's in the mix there somewhere. He
- 1:49Speaker 2: has played more and more in a in a different
- 1:52Speaker 2: nickel package than they showed earlier in the season, So
- 1:56Speaker 2: I think we'll probably see some of that at least
- 1:58Speaker 2: on Sunday.
- 1:59Speaker 3: All right to the ground. You're the guy that knows
- 2:02Speaker 3: how to make a lot of phone calls. Did you
- 2:04Speaker 3: get any indication what exactly was different about practice that
- 2:08Speaker 3: they they attempted to try to make things feel different
- 2:11Speaker 3: for faster starts.
- 2:13Speaker 2: And I think it was just a lot more things
- 2:17Speaker 2: being done that resemble game situations. You know, you don't
- 2:20Speaker 2: stop to play here, come out of the huddle, you know,
- 2:25Speaker 2: hold up the card for the scout team defense, come
- 2:28Speaker 2: out of the huddle, you know, whatever, you know, at
- 2:31Speaker 2: whatever pace sort of your feeling. I think they tried
- 2:34Speaker 2: to keep the pace of things more, uh to a
- 2:39Speaker 2: game day, you know, use the play clock like it's real,
- 2:43Speaker 2: and all of those things they do. But sometimes practice
- 2:46Speaker 2: just naturally gets slowed down, for like the teaching moments
- 2:50Speaker 2: like whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Okay, back it up, go
- 2:52Speaker 2: out of the huddle again. I think they just sort
- 2:55Speaker 2: of did it more like a game if if people
- 2:58Speaker 2: have you know, explained it to me properly now. I
- 3:02Speaker 2: tried to ask Sean that question today and I didn't
- 3:05Speaker 2: phrase it exactly right. He took it as, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 2: did you run more tempo? And I was really looking for.
- 3:12Speaker 2: What I had heard was they ran things more on
- 3:15Speaker 2: a regular season game type of minute to minute schedule,
- 3:20Speaker 2: Like you got this many seconds on the play clock,
- 3:22Speaker 2: get out of the huddle, run to play all of
- 3:24Speaker 2: those things.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Jeff, what about the penalty issue that this team is
- 3:28Speaker 1: dealing with right now? And especially for Vance Joseph, Like
- 3:32Speaker 1: this is the most penalized defense in the NFL, but
- 3:35Speaker 1: also a lot of great defenses they have to walk
- 3:39Speaker 1: that line. A lot of great secondaries have to be physical.
- 3:43Speaker 1: A lot of great pass rushes are going to jump
- 3:47Speaker 1: off sides for vance Joseph, what is the trick to
- 3:52Speaker 1: finding the happy balance of aggressive, physical, nasty defense but
- 3:59Speaker 1: also getting fewer penalties.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Yeah. I think any defense Nate that plays as much
- 4:05Speaker 2: man to man as they do is always going to
- 4:07Speaker 2: be high in flags. And I think that's why when
- 4:11Speaker 2: you hear Sean Payton talking about all this, he spends
- 4:15Speaker 2: a lot more time talking about their third highest in
- 4:19Speaker 2: the league on offense in penalties, and those are the
- 4:23Speaker 2: ones that seem to be, you know, lighting the red alert.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Like I think everyone assumes, if you're gonna play this
- 4:29Speaker 2: much man with aggressive corners, and they are coached to
- 4:34Speaker 2: play as aggressively as possible in their defense, that you're
- 4:38Speaker 2: gonna have some of those pis and you're gonna have
- 4:41Speaker 2: some of those holdings. What they don't want is the
- 4:46Speaker 2: silly jersey grab, the late you know, jump on the pile,
- 4:51Speaker 2: the silly face mask type of They don't want those,
- 4:55Speaker 2: but they'll live with some of the pi's and you
- 4:58Speaker 2: know a couple of the off side you know, by
- 5:01Speaker 2: Benito or Cooper or something. I mean, you know von
- 5:04Speaker 2: Miller would have a pretty wide variety of those by
- 5:08Speaker 2: a season then. But that's the trade off if you're
- 5:11Speaker 2: going to attack the line of scrimmage the way they do.
- 5:14Speaker 2: And I but it's those other you know, the preventable ones.
- 5:18Speaker 2: You know, you didn't have to grab that guy's jersey,
- 5:20Speaker 2: you didn't have to push him out of bounds, you know,
- 5:23Speaker 2: those type of things. You know.
- 5:25Speaker 3: It's interesting because Jeff we had on I guess the
- 5:28Speaker 3: guy one of the guys, uh we get his name right,
- 5:32Speaker 3: r J. Chappie that does the Jerry Jones interview in
- 5:34Speaker 3: Dallas every week, and so of course he's provided us.
- 5:37Speaker 3: They've provided us with a lot of great clips from Jerry.
- 5:39Speaker 3: But obviously asking him about the Cowboys and he said
- 5:44Speaker 3: he they they've been very surprised by what a physical
- 5:47Speaker 3: runner Javonte Williams still is and even the Cowboys were
- 5:51Speaker 3: maybe not realizing they were going to get this good
- 5:54Speaker 3: aversion of Javanta. I know, I heard you talking in
- 5:56Speaker 3: the morning, guys, and you were talking about now this
- 5:59Speaker 3: is a two year injury. I'm used to them talking
- 6:01Speaker 3: about it being a two year injury in the NBA.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Is the NFL is starting to look at this thing
- 6:05Speaker 3: differently when you have an injury like Davonte.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Had, but as they should, because it's been shown over
- 6:11Speaker 2: and over again, it's really a two year injury. And
- 6:16Speaker 2: unlike a lot of guys, Davante sort of played through
- 6:19Speaker 2: his recovery when he came back that next season, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 2: so a lot of his recovery was done while everyone
- 6:28Speaker 2: was watching. And a lot of it is just confidence.
- 6:32Speaker 2: I think it's hard for all of us to sometimes
- 6:36Speaker 2: if you've had that painful of thing happened to you,
- 6:40Speaker 2: it's really hard to have confidence in that knee or
- 6:43Speaker 2: ankle or whatever it is to go full speed. That's
- 6:47Speaker 2: a really difficult hurdle, and most of us don't face it.
- 6:51Speaker 2: You know. We injure ourselves doing whatever, and we have
- 6:55Speaker 2: as much time as we want to recover and regain. Okay,
- 6:59Speaker 2: now I can jog again, or I can go on
- 7:02Speaker 2: the treadmill again, as like I used to. You know,
- 7:07Speaker 2: these guys are so explosive and pushing the limit so hard,
- 7:11Speaker 2: it's really hard to get that confidence back, and that's
- 7:15Speaker 2: what I see. He believes his knee is gonna hold up.
- 7:20Speaker 2: And I'm not sure he always felt that way the
- 7:22Speaker 2: last two years because he was in a lot of
- 7:25Speaker 2: ways still recovering. And I think the Cowboys and the
- 7:28Speaker 2: people I know they're thought they would get a better version.
- 7:32Speaker 2: But he's he's running like he did as a rookie.
- 7:35Speaker 2: And like like you said, I'm not sure even they
- 7:38Speaker 2: and the best of they didn't give them a contract
- 7:42Speaker 2: like they did because they thought they were going to
- 7:44Speaker 2: get the second leading rusher in the league. Those numbers
- 7:48Speaker 2: just don't match up. So even they got a better version.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Jeff dron Blane hat of pick six last week. But
- 7:55Speaker 1: generally this is a Cowboys team that you can move
- 7:57Speaker 1: the ball against and throw all over. Is this the
- 8:02Speaker 1: week that the Broncos sleepy passing game kind of kind
- 8:08Speaker 1: of wakes up? And I'm not talking about desperation, fourth
- 8:11Speaker 1: quarter down, multiple scores. I'm talking about can the Broncos
- 8:14Speaker 1: consistently throw the football against these guys?
- 8:19Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean, the one thing they will be able
- 8:21Speaker 2: to do is test the Broncos patience. You're gonna see
- 8:24Speaker 2: a lot of zone uh. You know if Diggs doesn't play.
- 8:28Speaker 2: I mean, they're gonna have They're gonna do whatever they
- 8:31Speaker 2: have to do to keep everything in front of them.
- 8:34Speaker 2: So if you're gonna just keep trying to throw over that,
- 8:37Speaker 2: I don't I don't think that's the strategy. They're gonna
- 8:41Speaker 2: need a lot of the zone beaters, you know, catching runs,
- 8:46Speaker 2: open space, you know, receivers finding the spot to settle
- 8:50Speaker 2: down and work the ball and then you know, take
- 8:54Speaker 2: your shots. But if they they attack this says okay,
- 8:57Speaker 2: let's take shots early, I'm not sure that even that's
- 9:01Speaker 2: gonna work against the defense. That's quay just poorly across
- 9:05Speaker 2: the board. I think if they're willing to attack the
- 9:08Speaker 2: intermediate zone aggressively, they'll find room to work and they
- 9:13Speaker 2: will move the ball. It's just a matter of, you know,
- 9:16Speaker 2: sort of patiently doing that.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Jeff, When you say the intermediate, do you mean like
- 9:19Speaker 1: what statisticians referred to as the intermediate, which is like
- 9:23Speaker 1: eleven to nineteen yards beyond the line of scrimmage, or
- 9:26Speaker 1: is it like Denver intermediate, which is like three to
- 9:29Speaker 1: five yards beyond the line of scrimmage.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm talking to me as usual, you know, my
- 9:35Speaker 2: my intermediate sort of the fifteen thirty.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Yards okay, okay, all right, all right. I just wanted
- 9:40Speaker 1: to wanted to make sure because that's not you know, the.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Non screen game is not the intermediate.
- 9:45Speaker 1: You never know what Bo's gonna just air one out
- 9:47Speaker 1: seven yards beyond the line of scrimmage, let it loose.
- 9:52Speaker 1: There you go, Jeff Legweld, everybody ESBN dot com. We
- 9:56Speaker 1: talked to Jeff every single Friday. Jeff, have fun, man.
- 9:58Speaker 1: We appreciate it. Thank you.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Sorry I was tardy. Fellas still sorry.
- 10:03Speaker 1: We made it work.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Got business.
- 10:04Speaker 2: We know
