- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's the 26th of November
- 0:16which is a Wednesday and right in the middle of the week.
- 0:19I am delighted that you have taken this moment to stop the
- 0:23busyness of the world, which is getting pretty busy right now as
- 0:27boy, we are less than a month away from Christmas and you and
- 0:31I, friends, we are going to sit before God.
- 0:34Holy Spirit, open up our hearts so that as we read your words,
- 0:40our identity can be clear, that we find it in you and your love
- 0:45for us and not the changing machinations of this world.
- 0:52All right friends, let us do it. Let us read together Galatians
- 0:57chapter 4. Think of it this way.
- 1:10If a father dies and leaves an inheritance for his young
- 1:13children, those children are not much better off than slaves
- 1:17until they grow up. Even though they actually own
- 1:20everything their father had. They have to obey their
- 1:23guardians until they reach whatever age their father set.
- 1:28And that's the way it was with us before Christ came.
- 1:31We were like children. We were slaves to the basic
- 1:34spiritual principles of this world.
- 1:37But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a
- 1:41woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for
- 1:46us, who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his
- 1:51very own children. And because we are his children,
- 1:56God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting
- 2:00us to call out ABBA. Father, now you are no longer a
- 2:06slave, but God's own child. And since you are his child, God
- 2:11has made you his heir. Before you Gentiles knew God,
- 2:17you were slaves to so called gods that do not even exist.
- 2:22So now that you know God, or should I say now that God knows
- 2:26you, why do you want to go back again and become slaves once
- 2:30more to the weak and useless spiritual principles of this
- 2:34world? You were trying to earn favour
- 2:37with God by observing certain days or months or seasons or
- 2:40years. I fear for you.
- 2:43Perhaps all my hard work with you is for nothing.
- 2:47Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to live as I do
- 2:52in freedom from these things, for I have become like you,
- 2:56Gentiles, free from those laws. You did not mistreat me when I
- 3:02first preached to you. Surely you remember that I was
- 3:06sick when I first brought you the good news.
- 3:08But even though my condition tempted you to reject me, you
- 3:12did not despise me or turn me away.
- 3:15No, you took me in and cared for me as though I were an Angel
- 3:20from God or even Christ Jesus himself.
- 3:24Where is that joyful and grateful spirit you felt then?
- 3:28I'm sure you would have taken out your own eyes and given them
- 3:31to me if it had been possible. Have I now become your enemy
- 3:36because I'm telling you the truth?
- 3:39Those false teachers are so eager to win your favour, but
- 3:43their intentions are not good. They are trying to shut you off
- 3:47from me so that you will pay attention only to them.
- 3:51If someone is eager to do good things for you, that's all
- 3:54right. But let them do it all the time,
- 3:58not just when I'm with you. Oh, my dear children, I feel as
- 4:03if I'm going through labour pains for you again.
- 4:07And they will continue until Christ is fully developed in
- 4:10your lives. I wish I were with you right now
- 4:14so I could change my tone, but at this distance I don't know
- 4:18how else to help you. Tell me, you who want to live
- 4:23under the law, do you know what the law actually says?
- 4:27The Scriptures say that Abraham had two sons, one from his slave
- 4:31wife and one from his freeborn wife.
- 4:35The son of his slave wife was born in a human attempt to bring
- 4:39about the fulfilment of God's promise, but the son of the
- 4:43freeborn wife was born as God's own fulfilment of his promise.
- 4:49These two women serve as an illustration of God's two
- 4:52covenants. The first woman, Hagar,
- 4:55represents Mount Sinai, where people received the law that
- 4:58enslaved them. And now Jerusalem is just like
- 5:03Mount Sinai in Arabia, because she and her children live in
- 5:07slavery to the law. But the other woman, Sarah,
- 5:12represents the heavenly Jerusalem.
- 5:15She is the free woman, and she is our mother, as Isaiah said.
- 5:21Rejoice, O childless woman, you who have never given birth break
- 5:26into a joyful shout. You who have never been in
- 5:30labour. For the desolate woman now has
- 5:33more children than the woman who lives with her husband.
- 5:39And you, dear brothers and sisters, are children of the
- 5:42promise, just like Isaac. But you are now being persecuted
- 5:48by those who want you to keep the law, just as Ishmael, the
- 5:52child born by human effort, persecuted Isaac, the child born
- 5:57by the power of the Spirit. But what did the Scripture say
- 6:01about that? Get rid of the slave and her
- 6:04son, for the son of the slave woman will not share the
- 6:08inheritance with the free woman's son.
- 6:11So, dear brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave
- 6:16woman, we are children of the free woman,
- 6:30Our Lord. It's so easy for us to feel like
- 6:32we are on the outer and that we have got to work hard to earn
- 6:36our way into the centre. Whether it be in our work, in
- 6:41our study, in our friendship groups, in our extended families
- 6:46or even in your Kingdom. It's so easy to feel on the
- 6:49outer, but here we hear your assurance that says we are not
- 6:55on the outer. We are not born to anyone other
- 7:00than our true spiritual mother, born into this freedom that you
- 7:05have gifted us. Jesus my Lord, I pray that this
- 7:11assuredness, that this rock solid identity that we can be so
- 7:17confident in, that that would be the foundation upon which we see
- 7:21ourselves and understand the world and our relationship with
- 7:24you. Thank you that it's not 1/2
- 7:27hearted or temporal relationship that we have with you, but it is
- 7:32one of absolute certainty validated for eternity.
- 7:39You're a good God and we are so grateful for all that you have
- 7:42done for us and all that we are able to be in you.
- 7:47So we pray this in that saving name of Jesus, Amen.
