Transcript
- 0:00Yeah. My name is Danny Wassnop. I occasionally singing a band called Asking
- 0:28Alexandre, and we just released an album called Where Do We Go From here.
- 0:31You can listen to it and buy it everywhere. Besides me, everyone
- 0:33has children. Apparently they're very expensive and they require food, so listen to
- 0:40it so that they can feed their children, and so that I can buy
- 0:42sports cars. I'm very good, many thanks for joining us today. Absolutely
- 0:49so we've got here that it comes out over his trire on August the twenty
- 0:53fifth. But is it already out over there? No, it's no,
- 0:56it comes out twenty fifth here also three days. Very very cool. So,
- 1:00like, I know you've had a few albums out there already, mate,
- 1:02but like, does it get any easier the more you put our us
- 1:06the racious or does it sort of? I'm easy to deal with. No,
- 1:10I don't. It always sounds bad to say, but I don't mean
- 1:12it in a bad way. I don't care about releases. This has been
- 1:18our album for the last year, and as of three days from now,
- 1:22it's not our album anymore. It's everyone else's album. So a lot of
- 1:27people look at the release date as the as the start of the album.
- 1:32For me, it's the end. So on what is it Monday morning when
- 1:37it comes out or whenever it is, no go on Friday, that's when
- 1:41I get to start the next one. Kah, very sure. Well before
- 1:45you start the next one, we'll talk a little bit about this one,
- 1:47mate, So tell us a bit more about our way from me from a
- 1:49musical point of view and what you're going for with it. We very much
- 1:55didn't want to try anything new. We didn't want to rein in the wheel.
- 2:00We didn't want to to be anything exploring or an adventurous. It was
- 2:04supposed to be a look back on the last fifteen years and kind of be
- 2:07a snapshot of everything. Thus far from sonically touching on everything we've done prior
- 2:15to thematically going back to that two kind of subjects that have been that have
- 2:23resonated with people from those albums. Instead of being a kind of a personal
- 2:27record for us, it's it's a definitely for them record. I mean the
- 2:32title more men as a statement or is it a question? It's questions want
- 2:38to ask myself a lot, and I think everyone should be asking themselves all
- 2:42the time. I'm very goal motivated and orientated so, I mean, in
- 2:52my life, that's the question that I ask the most because it's regardless of
- 2:55a success or a failure or a winner of loss. That's kind of the
- 3:00first question because you've got to figure out what the next step is and even
- 3:06down to you know, when things are good, when things are bad.
- 3:08That's the that's the only question we can really answer ask ourselves. And to
- 3:14date, you release the songs Psycho, Bad Blood, and Dark Void,
- 3:16So say someone, that's all someone said of the album. Are they a
- 3:20good sonic representation or what to expect? Yeah, especially Dark Void. I
- 3:25feel like that's a good amalgamation of everything from the last fifteen years and a
- 3:34good representation of what the album is there to represent as a whole. Notice
- 3:39looking through every single, like the single covers have all got an image of
- 3:44the same car but in different landscapes. Did they tell a story when they're
- 3:47all put together? Yes? And no, I mean they'll they're representative rather
- 3:54than they're not a cohesive story in themselves. But it's it's it's the same
- 4:00car from the music videos from the fifth album. It's the same character figure
- 4:10from the third album. It's the same color palette as the first record,
- 4:14so that as well as the as the sonic aspect to it was again just
- 4:20reference to the last fifteen years and all the records that have that we put
- 4:26out during that time. We've sort of touched on this already. Maaybe we'll
- 4:30go into a bit more detail. Like you've said yourself from the press release
- 4:33also says that the album is a culmination of the band's soul career. So
- 4:38along those lines like, did you set out to make it like with different
- 4:42parts of the band's career in mind, or did it just sort of it
- 4:45just sort of stage you're right with life? Yes and no. I mean
- 4:48it's it's obviously clear to us which are particularly important parts of the career and
- 4:57parts of the discography. So knowing that we want to touch on those was
- 5:03clear, and it was clear which songs they were in which aspects of sound
- 5:09they were, But it was also capturing the the feel of what those things
- 5:15were and the kind of sonic palette of what they were, rather than specific
- 5:23specific moments. What track that really stands out to me is kill It with
- 5:29Fire, which is one minute and six seconds of pure intensity made like what's
- 5:32that song about? I couldn't tell you, I didn't write that one.
- 5:36I didn't sing on that one either. That was what that was all Ben
- 5:39Bruce. There was a minute edition that he threw into the album. I
- 5:43didn't even know it was there for a long time, so that was yeah,
- 5:48that's that's all him, and he pieced that together and recorded that himself
- 5:53and kind of put it in the last minute. Wow. Yeah, it
- 5:58stands out amongst the rest of it, like it's it's a beautiful album on
- 6:00so many levels, and then that one comes to just picks it straight into
- 6:03faces. It was quite a shock, but it was a good shot,
- 6:08thank you very much. And I think it's it's quite poignant that the title
- 6:13and the closing track is a beautifully soothing ends to where do we go from
- 6:15me? You're like, why did you choose that song to represent the album
- 6:19as a closer? So that that song wasn't supposed to be on the record
- 6:26originally. I wasn't originally wanting them to be a ballad or a slow song
- 6:29on it, purely because that's always the song I love on the album,
- 6:33which doesn't mean it's a great representation of what the album was supposed to be.
- 6:40So I just wanted it to be high energy start to finish, But
- 6:44when we wrapped up, everyone separately and individually called me basically saying they felt
- 6:50like it was missing the Danny song. And I was actually writing that song
- 6:54already for my next record, so it was it was kind of on hand
- 7:00and on deck already, and it felt very appropriate based off conversations we'd had
- 7:06as a band internally for a long time and kind of different things going on
- 7:12in our lives individually and personally, So it was kind of the universe stepping
- 7:16in and putting that song in front of us at the right time. But
- 7:21yeah, as soon as I sent it through to everyone, they were very
- 7:24moved by it and wanted it to be the title track, which you know,
- 7:27feels good. I could tell it was a personal song for you too,
- 7:30bro, just by the words drowning in tequila were in there, because
- 7:34yeah, tequila, I do. I mean, I'm not sure if I
- 7:41told you the story and I but when I was with you is in Brisbane
- 7:43show and you had that that tequila has like I was beautiful tail, I
- 7:47ya, you're drinking anyway, I've never heard of it before, but yeah,
- 7:53that night, I believe it was at the class of it was all
- 7:56the big blue light bottom. Yeah, yeah, well I remember, yeah
- 7:59it was. It was a pretty cheap bottle of Tequel, or wasn't that
- 8:01expensive. But a couple of weeks after you went home, I went in
- 8:03and didn't even look at the price tag. I grab dropped a shelf and
- 8:07bought it, and it was like one hundred and eighty dollars. And that's
- 8:09what I thought. Like your version of not very dear, I had my
- 8:11version of not very dear, and two totally different things. No, so
- 8:16what so what I mean? That is a sliding scale, I've always told
- 8:20people, But no, No, what it was is the bar we were
- 8:22drinking it out was selling it for so cheap. It is usually an expensive
- 8:26bottle, but they were selling it. It was like, I think it
- 8:30was like three dollars a shot. Yeah, it's fucking good. You've got
- 8:33me hooked on anyway, roight, Like every time I go out to buy
- 8:37a bottle Tequel and now I don't feed the kids for three weeks. Listen,
- 8:41I'll help you fix that, because I have my own Tequela now and
- 8:45we do not but we're not as expensive as them, but we are better,
- 8:48so I can help you where there's one, get one's hands on those
- 8:50man down there. I'm not nowhere yet down there, but I'm working on
- 8:56it. Actually. I know a guy that runs a brock Lords over here
- 9:00and they bring over all the Motorhead whiskey and all the Iron Maiden beer and
- 9:03all that's. So, I think I've still got your phone number on what's
- 9:05that broad So I'll hit him up and i'll see if he's interested. I'll
- 9:09shoot your message ability. Yeah, Well, what's going into international distribution over
- 9:13the next over the next three or four months, hopefully rolling that out in
- 9:18the new year internationally. Betiful. So back to the album, bro Like,
- 9:26we said that it is a culmination of the band's career to date.
- 9:28So in a way, like, are you looking at putting that that part
- 9:31of the Bend's career to bed and moving on with something different now or is
- 9:35that sort of giving you a refreshed perspective? I guess I mean we've we've
- 9:39done that with every album ever. We've never put out an album that sounds
- 9:45like the one before it or like any other before it. As much as
- 9:48people kind of like to hold on to certain periods of time, like asking
- 9:52to Stand your definitively sounds like these two albums, It's like, well,
- 9:56those twolbums don't sound like getting anything like each other either. It's always been
- 10:00what we do. But there is going to be a next There's going to
- 10:03be a a change coming. I can't speak on what that will be because
- 10:09we haven't started that yet, but I think it's it's that's just the natural
- 10:13process of this band is. We just keep changing and exploring and what artists
- 10:20were songwriters. That's what that's what we've gone into this to do, and
- 10:26it's all we really want to do. We're not interested in making the same
- 10:30thing over and over again. Personally, I would rather not make and make
- 10:35albums. I'd rather than not make albums than make eight of the same fucking
- 10:41record. Right. Would be easy, wouldn't it? Yeah, before you
- 10:48go, mate, have you started like our three new Spotify playlists based on
- 10:52artists we speak to? So using your own songs. It could be ask
- 10:56Alexandria, it could be your solo songs, but given us some different songs,
- 11:00one to get the party started, one to save your marriage, and
- 11:03one that could potentially end your marriage. Oh Jesus, uh, getting the
- 11:11party started. I would go don't have a drink it or feel like ship,
- 11:15which is gonna be Danning mossop one because their party songs. Yeah,
- 11:20probably don't want to get it would be the one. And if you can
- 11:24keep up with the video, don't because you because I don't. I can't
- 11:28tell people to do it because I don't get soon. But I think I
- 11:31think I did three and a half minutes in that video. It may be
- 11:37more so there's a pretty strong argument for a party start and then to save
- 11:46the marriage angels easy also give you up asking, So one of those two
- 11:56and then could end your marriage. I'm gonna have to go with mine again
- 12:01and it would be actually save your marriage. I'm gonna go another year,
- 12:05and then that would end your marriage. I probably love you more than I
- 12:11was asking, But I write really sad songs. That's that's so good,
- 12:16my friend. Now, do you mind if I use the video this in
- 12:20the view? I think it would make a pretty cool one, haven't you
- 12:20in the tatter shop? Yeah? Absolutely? Can we have a quick lot
- 12:24of what you getting done? We are bunch. We got my tequila down
- 12:30there, we got microphone, we got guitars, we got a whole bunch
- 12:33of stuff going on as brother. All right, Danny, well, thanks
- 12:35very much for joining us. Say mate, where do we go from here?
- 12:39Thank you? And she's an absolute pearl, So take care, keep
- 12:41drinking tequila, mate, and we'll see you next time we come over the
- 13:09emptiness inside, I felt the oldest guise's tracking under all the glass, sleeping
- 13:22gottree fire fall to the darkness to spread me dark Slarus. So I fuck
- 13:35inside last time. Dr Slarus, your fucking lie, far oh lie.
- 14:05It's also give my mind homebut start to let me. I'm trying risen.
- 14:15The sire is burning in my face. Love, I feel sad and say
- 14:24my saf trade my truth, and you too, get on for me.
- 14:37I swear it, so I fucking side you me time me. I swear
- 14:48it's good. Fucking my god. Why can't you just get the picture You
- 15:11left me blouse, left this bind life. Now you got me feel in
- 15:20hoe like this most a country. There's no to you, my child cancer
