- 0:00Welcome to the Hoover Daily Report. "Ideas Advancing
- 0:04Freedom." It's Monday, July 13th, twenty twenty six.
- 0:07Today, the GoodFellows ask if President Trump is in a slump, and what he can do
- 0:10to turn things around. Ross Levine writes about Adam Smith’s suggestion that may
- 0:14have been able to prevent the Revolutionary War, and Ronnen Harary,
- 0:17co-founder of Spin Master, speaks to Russ Roberts about the unique and enduring
- 0:21impact of designing original toys and selling them around the globe.
- 0:24Trump Slump, Capitalism vs. Communism, and An Old Man Yells at Claude.
- 0:28After a productive first one hundred days after returning to office, President
- 0:33Trump has since hit a rough patch: stubborn inflation (despite an otherwise
- 0:37powerhouse economy), an unpopular war with Iran, and setbacks at the Supreme
- 0:42Court, plus growing dissent among congressional Republicans as his party
- 0:46faces the distinct possibility of losing one or both chambers of Congress in
- 0:50November. Has the ever-impulsive, risk-taking Trump lost his political
- 0:54Midas touch, or is he simply yet another president befuddled by a second-term jinx
- 0:59(not to mention a disgruntled electorate)? If Trump is sorely in need
- 1:03of a “win,” will it come on the domestic front or abroad (spoiler alert: look to
- 1:08Cuba)? After that, the fellows discuss whether it was fair play for the American
- 1:12president to intervene in World Cup officiating and for the International
- 1:17Olympic Committee to allow Russian athletes to compete for Mother Russia in
- 1:21the 2028 Games and whether the war in Ukraine is anywhere close to a tipping
- 1:25point.
- 1:26Taxation With Representation.
- 1:28Hoover Senior Fellow Ross Levine, returning in the voice of Adam Smith,
- 1:31explains Smith’s response to the American rallying cry of “no taxation without
- 1:35representation.” Smith gave Parliament a way to respond that would have not only
- 1:39respected the colonists’ demand for equality, he writes, but also opened the
- 1:42way to greater prosperity for everyone in the British Empire. Parliament, however,
- 1:46refused—out of pride and shortsightedness, Levine writes. And
- 1:49thus, the American colonists settled the issue for themselves. The warnings for
- 1:53the twenty-first century are these, Levine writes: Citizens burdened with tax
- 1:57burdens must share in the benefits as well, and empires can throw away an
- 2:00irreplaceable treasure if they fail to guard against hubris or the corrupting
- 2:04power of special interests.
- 2:05From Sawdust to Paw Patrol: The Spin Master Story.
- 2:09A nylon stocking filled with sawdust that grows grass for hair launched one of the
- 2:13most successful toy companies in the world. Ronnen Harary, cofounder of Spin
- 2:18Master and co-creator of Paw Patrol, talks about his book, No Experience
- 2:22Necessary, with EconTalk's Russ Roberts. Harary traces his journey from selling
- 2:27grass-growing novelty heads at twenty-three, through Devil Sticks and
- 2:31Air Hogs, to building Bakugan and Paw Patrol into global franchises touching
- 2:35the lives of millions of children. Along the way, he reflects on the artistry of
- 2:40commercial creation and what it means to build something that outlives its
- 2:44founders. The conversation closes on the eternal magic of toys and our childhoods.
- 2:49New California Minimum Wage Law Will Increase Wildfire Risk.
- 2:52On his Substack, Visiting Fellow Matthew Kahn writes of a bizarre, unfolding
- 2:56situation in California that he argues will increase the risk of wildfire unless
- 3:01it is reversed. Because of a minimum wage exception that expired this month, goat
- 3:05herders (but not sheep herders) in California now qualify for what is
- 3:09effectively round-the-clock pay, including overtime, that amounts to
- 3:12$20,000 per month. Kahn writes that without a change, herders will be forced
- 3:17to employ forms of remote control of their herds, including GPS-linked
- 3:20collars, electric fences, and other tools. And larger firms in the space will
- 3:25be more able to adjust than smaller ones.

- 3:30Arthur N. Young Papers.
- 3:31Economist Arthur N. Young advised governments including Mexico, Germany,
- 3:35Honduras, and, most famously, Nationalist China between 1918 and 1963. The
- 3:40collection includes correspondence, financial statements, press releases, and
- 3:45reports documenting his work advising governments around the world.
