Transcript
- 0:09the midlife car chase. David Chase.
- 0:14We are back Round 2 episode 2. How are you doing?
- 0:20I'm great. I mean, what was that that we
- 0:21just saw there? Look at how professional we are,
- 0:24Greg. The production team has been
- 0:28firing on all cylinders. We have a new intro, we have a
- 0:32new outro. I mean we are like we're legit
- 0:37bro. Yeah, we're like a real thing
- 0:38now. I'm impressed.
- 0:40Yeah, we're we're legit. There's no doubt about it.
- 0:45There's another thing that that's been happening because in
- 0:49the last episode there was a lot of call outs and one of the call
- 0:54outs was about us becoming the number one show.
- 0:58So I just wanted to give an update on our first episode
- 1:01together. Wait, before you show and before
- 1:04you show that you said to me, we're going to have low ratings
- 1:08at the beginning because nobody knows you.
- 1:10And that's going to take us about six months to get to where
- 1:14we want to be, right? Yeah, but then I realized that
- 1:18you're a silver haired fox and everybody would want to see us.
- 1:23Yeah, right. So the chase effect is in full
- 1:28effect if we look here at the ratings from our last week's
- 1:34episodes. OK, we've got the midlife card
- 1:39chase episode 1 that went on May 5th where surface issues Episode
- 1:4934 that was three days prior and has 19 fewer views as of this
- 1:59morning. I mean the only way I can figure
- 2:03is it is the chase effect. I mean, it's not.
- 2:09Is that an industry term? The chase effect I.
- 2:11I think it's becoming one. I mean, I think it's pretty
- 2:16awesome that we have a lot of people that ended up liking us.
- 2:19So that's the flagship show that we were against.
- 2:22So for that week we were the number one show on the network.
- 2:26Is that correct? No, that's not correct.
- 2:28And you weren't even supposed to say anything else.
- 2:31We were see the the the shtick was supposed to end right there.
- 2:36And you what you did is you blew it.
- 2:39I've taught you show. I've taught our show in Pryor
- 2:42where we the number one show for the week.
- 2:46There were only two. Well, yes, we were.
- 2:48I guess technically we were. That doesn't sound like you were
- 2:52too excited about it. All right, so.
- 2:54There was another show that had another host on the channel and
- 3:03a guy with a nickname after a something that you prepared tea
- 3:12in and that did really well. It did better than any of the
- 3:19other shows, but I mean whatever.
- 3:22All right, so so we beat the flagship show, right, So we
- 3:26became number one. And then he I mean, first of
- 3:29all, when you guys were mentioning the new shows that he
- 3:32was going to have junk wax Mike, I was expected to be Billy
- 3:36Bob's, you know, show that he does in his basement.
- 3:40I mean T pod who's on like the number one?
- 3:43How can we compete with this T pod who's on the number one show
- 3:48on basically YouTube show for card content?
- 3:52And then the other person is Chris Sewell, who's probably
- 3:55number 2IN card content. So all right, we're going to
- 3:59have a little bit of work ahead of us.
- 4:01I've got David Chase of Sports Cards Live, so you need to just
- 4:07relax. OK, now I have another
- 4:10announcement to make. OK, this is this.
- 4:14This is also very exciting stuff.
- 4:18We already have a sponsor for our show.
- 4:22After one. Show after one show, Auction
- 4:27Wire and Auction Wire is officially the sponsor of
- 4:34Midlife Card Chase from this point forward until, you know,
- 4:39they decide they're not interested.
- 4:41But after one show, we have a sponsor and we're the number one
- 4:49show of the two shows that we're actually paying attention to for
- 4:53that particular week only. So if you're not familiar with
- 4:59Auction Wire, I want to show, I want to actually, I want to
- 5:02share this because this actually has something to do with what
- 5:05our main topic is today. Auction Wire is a great, it
- 5:09really is a great tool. Auction Wire dot AI you can get
- 5:13a 60 day free trial using the promo code midlife.
- 5:18Now using that promo code also helps us because then they say,
- 5:22well, where did they hear about it?
- 5:24They use the promo code midlife and so then then they say, oh,
- 5:28well, that's that's midlife. That's the code from midlife
- 5:34card chase. So that is a good thing to do.
- 5:38What do you before we take a look closer at Auction Wire, you
- 5:43know, you now? No, Leighton, who's one of the
- 5:48owners of Auction Wire. I would I would probably go so
- 5:51far as to say that you're friends with Leighton and
- 5:54believes in us and our show along with his partner Mark.
- 5:59I mean, we've got to be feeling pretty good right now.
- 6:03I do. I don't think my dad even
- 6:05believes in this show. So for Layton to believe in it,
- 6:08I'm very impressed that he is after one episode.
- 6:12I hope Layton, you know, that I can be a little sometimes
- 6:14inappropriate and put my foot in my mouth.
- 6:16So hopefully you signed a very long term deal, Greg, so we can
- 6:22make sure that even if I, if I put my foot in my mouth, they're
- 6:26locked in. Now I'm going to I'm going to
- 6:29demonstrate, I'm going to show you auction wire here real quick
- 6:33and I'm not going to use it yet, but I'm going to use it in a few
- 6:36minutes once we start talking about our topic because it
- 6:39directly plays in and how you can use it directly plays in to
- 6:44what what we're going to be talking about today.
- 6:47And you know, I will say that, you know, some people have heard
- 6:51about auction wire, some people have gotten into the weeds on,
- 6:55you know, what they've done or what they've, they maybe they
- 6:57tried it early on. Things have changed a lot. 1 of
- 7:02the things that has happened is they're starting to get some of
- 7:05the biggest dealers inventory in their search history.
- 7:09So when you browse, you're not just browsing Rea auctions and
- 7:14and eBay auctions and you know, CIA auctions, you're now a
- 7:19result could be, you know, ash of legacy cards.
- 7:23His inventory is is coming up in searches.
- 7:27Another big dealer is Tony E*Trade.
- 7:29Tony E*Trade stuff is about to start showing up in the search
- 7:33history. So it's literally quickly
- 7:35becoming a one stop shop on how to find stuff.
- 7:38And again, we'll talk about it. I'll I'll show you in a quick
- 7:41demonstration how I was using it earlier this week.
- 7:45That said, we do have a topic that we want to talk about and
- 7:49we're going to get into it and it's not all going to be about
- 7:51snack food and Oreos. And I don't know if you saw my
- 7:54video, we're recording this early, this we're recording this
- 7:59way ahead of time just for schedule's sake.
- 8:02But my video today I, I did my first taste test on the channel.
- 8:08Did you see it? I did.
- 8:10I thought you just said we're not talking about food and now
- 8:11you're talking about food at the same.
- 8:13Time. I know, I know.
- 8:14I'm just saying I can't help myself, so all right.
- 8:17I did. He gets credit.
- 8:19Yes, You ended up giving you a very good idea of the greatest
- 8:24of the greatest of the Oreo eating.
- 8:25So watch Greg's video. It's good.
- 8:27It's good. Yeah.
- 8:28All right. So our topic and this came up
- 8:30organically because, you know, this is not just a show where
- 8:34you and I, you know, try to produce something interesting.
- 8:38This is just basically we're, we're taking our own
- 8:43conversation and we're just recording it of things that
- 8:46we're talking about anyways. And the other day we were
- 8:49talking about a topic and what happened was we said, wait, we
- 8:53should talk about that would be an interesting show.
- 8:56So let's not talk about this because that would be a a fun
- 9:00show. So it's literally something that
- 9:02just came up organically. Do you want to tell people kind
- 9:05of how that happened or your recollection of of how that all
- 9:11came up? Yeah, I mean, so this also kind
- 9:13of talks about how I use auction wire.
- 9:17I look at every leaf card. I love the 48 leaf set and it's
- 9:25for most of my collection. I've always been what Joe Bro,
- 9:30The Heart of Sports Cars Live has come up with the term a
- 9:35flight collector, which is like a flight of beer, right When you
- 9:39end up going to one of those restaurants, you get a flight of
- 9:41multiple different versions. I love that.
- 9:44That kind of really represents me because I like to have a
- 9:47couple of each set or of each player.
- 9:49I don't need to have a whole run.
- 9:51I don't need to have a whole set 99% of the time also so if I'm
- 9:55collecting the dandies, I like mantle, feller and dobie.
- 10:01I don't need the other however meant there are to complete the
- 10:05set because those other cards don't mean the same to me.
- 10:09And I don't feel like I need to finish a set for me to be
- 10:15fulfilled in the hobby. And the only way way that I feel
- 10:19a little different about that is I love 48 leaf.
- 10:23I just love it. It is my favorite set of all
- 10:25time. It will always be my favorite
- 10:27set. There's nothing that will ever
- 10:29overtake it for for sports cards.
- 10:32But even on that set, I don't collect the common players.
- 10:36I've my way of thinking in my head is as a flight is I've only
- 10:40collected hall of farmers. And you know, some Hall of
- 10:44farmers are a lot more popular than others.
- 10:48And I was just kind of going through them.
- 10:51And by the way, it's been my lifelong mission for me to
- 10:55upgrade those cards, not by numbers on the slab, but just by
- 11:00how they look, right? I want them to be perfectly
- 11:03centered, which are so hard to find.
- 11:05And I constantly have one in my collection.
- 11:08I find another which like I'm on auction wire and I, I literally
- 11:12have seen every leaf card that has come on the market over the
- 11:15last couple of years through every auction house.
- 11:18I'm not. I'm just fanatical.
- 11:23Fanatical. I'm trying to use other words.
- 11:25Yeah, so, OK, so let's back up just a little bit.
- 11:28Now, a second ago you said the D&D you you need, you want the
- 11:32mantle, you want the feller and you want the dobie.
- 11:36You didn't mention like Monty Irvin, 'cause there are other
- 11:40Hall of Farmers in there. But then you said, but with the
- 11:42leaf you want all the Hall of Farmers.
- 11:46So being a flight collector sometimes is a Hall of Fame
- 11:50player run within it and sometimes it's even more
- 11:55condensed than that. Is that right?
- 11:58Yes. But I, I, I don't usually have
- 12:02rules like that, but for some reason in the 48 Leafs that I've
- 12:05made a rule and I don't really know why I did that.
- 12:09So do you remember how this came up?
- 12:10Do you remember what question I asked you?
- 12:13I said why? OK.
- 12:15What was the question? You are asking me because I love
- 12:19the short print leaf cards. I love them and again I don't
- 12:23need all the short print leaf cards.
- 12:24I just want the Hall of Fame short print leaf cards, which is
- 12:27like Kel Neuhauser Anus Slaughter page, which I don't
- 12:32have, Bob Feller and Larry Dobie.
- 12:37I love those cards. And you know what?
- 12:40Ana Slaughter is not Larry Dobie, right?
- 12:44But at the same time, it still really means something to me.
- 12:47And you asked me why. Why do you care so much when I
- 12:52know when you were thinking that some of those cards are
- 12:55obnoxiously more expensive for an Ana Slaughter card?
- 13:00Why do you need to have that? Why do you feel the need when
- 13:02you don't feel that way about any other set?
- 13:05Is that pretty much how you felt like the conversation?
- 13:07Went yeah, but can we back up for a second?
- 13:09Yeah. Pronounce that player's name
- 13:11again. The guy with the last name
- 13:13Slaughter. Say his first name one more time
- 13:15for me. Anus anus, anus slaughter.
- 13:19Isn't it Enos slaughter? Enos Enos anus.
- 13:24No Enos slaughter. Enos.
- 13:27You said anus slaughter like 5 times and I'm like I don't know
- 13:31if that's a SoCal dialect or something but.
- 13:35No it's not. I just don't know his.
- 13:37Name Anus Anus Slaughter. Well, the one of the reasons why
- 13:40I don't like that guy, OK, And that's why I'm not going to
- 13:43figure out what his name. Is Anus anus?
- 13:45Yeah. Why?
- 13:46Why Anus is annoying to me is 'cause I mean, wasn't he like
- 13:50the known racist that spiked Jackie Robinson?
- 13:54That guy. I should know that.
- 13:58I don't know that for sure. So that's quite a claim to make
- 14:02without being positive and certain about it.
- 14:05We can definitely find that out here in a minute because
- 14:08otherwise in the comments we will get overwhelmed with
- 14:12comments about how could you not know that so.
- 14:15I think he was a good old boy, a good old boy racist.
- 14:18And so I don't really how you were talking about this
- 14:21character matter, right? Yeah.
- 14:25Does character matter? Not in that card.
- 14:28I, I, I don't really care about him as a player, but I like that
- 14:32card because it's a very, very tough card to get.
- 14:36It's hard to get it to look relatively nice.
- 14:38And I love my copy of it. It's a Hall of Famer.
- 14:41It's part of the leaf set. And by the way, these, these
- 14:43special, these short print leaf cards, there's only like
- 14:46anywhere from 180 to 280 of them in existence.
- 14:50So they're just very, very tough to find, especially for leaf
- 14:54collectors like one of the whole set.
- 14:56I mean, there's less than 300 people in the world that can
- 14:59even collect a set like that. So it's kind of special in that
- 15:02way now. I have confirmed that Jackie's
- 15:07rookie season, about four months into the season, he did, in
- 15:12fact, spike Jackie's ankle. Yeah, I, I I don't know why.
- 15:17I I guess I knew that he got spiked and there was this kind
- 15:20of famous thing. I guess I didn't remember that
- 15:23he was the one that did it. OK, let's now, conversely, you
- 15:29said to me, well, but Greg, you, you collect that pirate set.
- 15:34And if you collect the pirate set, I mean, Blackbeard is like
- 15:38the the pirate that people know of.
- 15:41So why do you collect the other ones?
- 15:45It so what's the point of collecting the other ones 'cause
- 15:48I was basically badgering you and saying do you really want to
- 15:52spend that much money on on Enos Slaughter and Lou Boudreau And
- 15:57again, good players and and cool cards.
- 15:59But but I was just like, 'cause I know like Chris from Missouri,
- 16:04he's been like just desperate to add which one is the 1 he wants.
- 16:09That's he wants Anos. And he wants Enos slaughter.
- 16:13And so I was like, why not just sell it to Chris?
- 16:18Like, why do you need that card so much?
- 16:20And and you, you were kind. And and then we're like, let's
- 16:24talk about this, because I then later I I guess it was earlier
- 16:28this week, as we're recording this, I was talking about in a
- 16:32video or maybe it was over the weekend.
- 16:34I was talking about like I was like a player run collector cuz
- 16:38I felt like, well that's what you're supposed to do.
- 16:41Like if you collect auto Graham cards, you should collect all of
- 16:45the auto Graham cards. You shouldn't just collect some
- 16:47of them. And then some of them I don't
- 16:50really like. And I was like, I would rather
- 16:52have money to spend on other things that I do like than that
- 16:57card that I don't really like just cuz it's like a part of the
- 17:00group and so. But isn't that what a set is?
- 17:05A set is just a group, and you're really not caring about
- 17:08each card individually, which both you and I don't really
- 17:12collect in that way. But these are extreme examples
- 17:14for what we do. When you look at those common
- 17:17pirates, does it bring up the same emotion and love as the
- 17:22Blackbeard card? Well, there's a couple of pieces
- 17:26to that on how I would answer that it I love all the pirate
- 17:31cards, but the, and the reason I OK, let's just go into this
- 17:36right now. The reason I love the pirate
- 17:39cards the most is not necessarily because they're
- 17:42pirates. It's because they're beautiful
- 17:45pieces of art that are from 1888 and in 1888 they were placed
- 17:52into a pack of tobacco. And somehow they have survived
- 17:58generation after generation after generation.
- 18:00And some of them still have a nice looking image and surface
- 18:05and are beautiful to this day. And they're an artifact meets
- 18:09Americana meets a beautiful little piece of art.
- 18:13And so when I first was drawn to them, I've never heard of the
- 18:17pirate on the card. I just saw the card and said
- 18:19that thing right there is beautiful.
- 18:23Now the most beautiful card in the set is the Blackbeard card.
- 18:31It it, it's not just that it's Blackbeard, it's that it's the
- 18:35most beautiful card. And I've thought about this
- 18:38because I'm like, OK, would I sell the other 49 and use that
- 18:44money to buy a second Blackbeard?
- 18:47Because the Blackbeard is the best card.
- 18:49It's the best looking card and where I'm at right now.
- 18:53I don't think I want to because for me it's the chase is no pun
- 19:01intended, is a big part of the fun.
- 19:06Like going to a card show and going, oh, I, I haven't picked
- 19:10up my, you know, my Ricky Henderson rookie card yet.
- 19:14I haven't picked up my Daryl Strawberry rookie card yet.
- 19:17All these cards that you can get.
- 19:18You just have to pay the money, the, the actual, the the
- 19:23scraping in the clawing to actually find them.
- 19:28To me, to me is one of my favorite parts of this whole
- 19:32thing. It's one of the, it's one of the
- 19:34things that drives what I buy now.
- 19:37It's one of the things that drives what my searches are.
- 19:40And it's one of the, quite frankly, it's one of the reasons
- 19:42I like auction wires because it gets me to more places.
- 19:46Like I was scrolling through Facebook posts and, and posting
- 19:52things on Facebook groups and saying, if anybody knows of one
- 19:55of these or hears about one of these.
- 19:57And, and I heard from a guy who knew that a guy might have had a
- 20:03Blackbeard and he might have been thinking about selling it.
- 20:06And then I reached out to him. And then it's like you knew a
- 20:09person who knew a person like that.
- 20:11Whole adrenaline for me. Was a was a big part of it.
- 20:17I get it all right and and I'm the same way with the leaf
- 20:20cards. I now have all but two.
- 20:23OK, the page is one of them which I'm not getting any time
- 20:26soon. I don't have the resources for
- 20:27it at this point, but I also need a new Hauser.
- 20:31If anybody has one, reach out. But you know, the chase of it is
- 20:38part of the fun. I completely agree with you.
- 20:41So here. But here's the thing that I want
- 20:43to ask you though, Greg, like didn't you feel a little empty
- 20:47when it was over? I know that you can upgrade and
- 20:52I'm doing that all the time with my leaf cards and not, you know,
- 20:54I first was trying to get the leaf set, the leaf Hall of
- 20:57Farmers without the short print cards.
- 20:59I was able to do that. But when I was finished, you
- 21:02know, I'm still constantly looking to upgrade, to find a
- 21:05nicer copy. They're all different to find
- 21:08one that's better centered, to find one that looks like a
- 21:10little bit better registration or a color variation, but isn't
- 21:14there. The the hunt was so extensive
- 21:18for me. And so, you know, passionate and
- 21:22looking at things every day, multiple times a day at every
- 21:26auction house in eBay. And the auction wire that's
- 21:28helping us now do all that. I mean, you didn't feel a little
- 21:32bit empty when it was over. At first I felt an incredible
- 21:40amount of satisfaction, like a like a student who just finished
- 21:45his last final of college and it was, I did it.
- 21:51And then there is a little bit of this sort of lull.
- 21:56We're like, now what's going to happen?
- 21:59I've been putting all of my time and energy toward this.
- 22:02And now I've gotten this and now what do I do?
- 22:06And I was rejuvenated when I decided, well, maybe now I'm
- 22:12going to upgrade. And that added a second wave of
- 22:19now I'm always looking again, I will say this, getting a solid
- 22:27two or a three type of card, not necessarily that number and
- 22:32going to like a four or 4 1/2 type of card.
- 22:36Again, not necessarily based on the number that that rush is not
- 22:44as great as the rush when you went from not having it to now
- 22:49having it. And so it it's not quite as good
- 22:54of a hit to the endorphin rush, but it's still pretty cool.
- 23:01And and then it brings in this whole nother, this whole other
- 23:05thing. And this is something I get
- 23:06questions on a lot. And we could talk about this
- 23:09too, if you want. But how do you ensure that you
- 23:13still enjoy your cards? Because if it's all about the
- 23:18hunt and then you get the card, you stick it in a box and then
- 23:22what? Then what do you occasionally
- 23:25pull it back out? I mean, I've got cards that are
- 23:27worth thousands of dollars that are in a box and I might go two
- 23:34months before taking it out and looking at it.
- 23:37What's the point? You know, and, and I have an
- 23:40opinion on that and, and how I can still enjoy it.
- 23:43But if you're willing to go down that road, like I, I do want
- 23:48part of the issue. It it is.
- 23:50But are you, are you telling me that you do not look at the
- 23:53Blackbeard card more often than the common peg leg Joe card?
- 24:02Well, Peg Leg Joe is a short print.
- 24:05I will tell you that there are not a lot of Peg Leg Joes out
- 24:09there. I would say I do look at the
- 24:12Blackbeard more often and the joy I get when I see the
- 24:18Blackbeard, it is a greater joy than when I when I look at the
- 24:23peg leg Joe. And do you also feel like this
- 24:27was what I was wanting to bring up during our regular
- 24:29conversation? You are now the you are the
- 24:33pirate guy, right? Midlife and your brand.
- 24:39A lot of it has to do with this pirate set.
- 24:41I don't really have a brand but people know me as the leaf guy
- 24:44also right? If you were to let go of the
- 24:48Commons, right? And for you to keep, let's say
- 24:51let's not say one card, let's say you keep your five best
- 24:54cards. But for you to get how many
- 24:56cards are in that set? 40 ish. 505050.
- 24:59So for you to get rid of 45 and you're saying like get rid of 45
- 25:03and get another Blackbeard, You already have 1.
- 25:05You could possibly get rid of those 45 and buy a a grail card
- 25:08that's always been on your list and use the resources for that
- 25:11too. You can still love the pirate
- 25:13cards where there's not very many people in the world that
- 25:16love those cards as much as you. Does it need to be the full set?
- 25:20Does that hurt your brand? Does that hurt how people think
- 25:24of you? Is that part of the reason why
- 25:26it's tough for you to give those up?
- 25:30Well, who said I'm giving them up first of all?
- 25:32No, I'm, I'm talking about yeah. Yeah, OK, OK, let's you know,
- 25:39I'm an analogy guy and I, I use examples of of other sort of
- 25:43situations that maybe we can relate to since most of us are
- 25:46pirate card collectors. So Lucy is my younger daughter
- 25:51and she's a freshman in college and she is playing college
- 25:54soccer at probably the best JC program in the state of
- 26:01California for women's soccer. And she just finished her
- 26:05freshman year and she's going to go to become a sophomore.
- 26:09And will she then transfer and play to four year school?
- 26:13Maybe. I don't know.
- 26:14We'll see. It's depends on what she wants.
- 26:17You know, it depends on what what opportunity she has.
- 26:21But there's going to come a point in the next between
- 26:25probably nine months and 3 1/2 years that Lucy, who has been
- 26:34going to soccer practice three days a week every week since she
- 26:39was 8, every weekend is soccer games where her competitive
- 26:48opportunity to play will end somewhere in the next six months
- 26:52to 3 1/2 years, we'll say. And she's going to have to look
- 26:59in the mirror and go, I guess I'm more than just a soccer
- 27:02player, you know. And, and I can tell you, knowing
- 27:06Lucy, she is much more than than just a soccer player, just like
- 27:13you are much more than just a leaf collector.
- 27:16And I am much more than a pirate card collector.
- 27:19I am a person who loves pirate cards.
- 27:22And I look at it as like, you know, no pun intended, but one
- 27:29leg, one peg leg of my stool is my pirate collecting.
- 27:35I would go so far as to say it's not just my pirate collecting,
- 27:39it's my turn of the century. Non sport card collecting is a
- 27:42major component of my collection.
- 27:47I don't care about my brand. But I could see if I sold those
- 27:53and I stopped wanting to upgrade them and it was no longer a
- 27:56piece of my collection that I would kind of look in the mirror
- 27:59and go, what, what, what kind of collector am I?
- 28:03Just like Lucy will look in the mirror and go, OK, so I'm not
- 28:06playing competitive soccer now when people at when my distant
- 28:11relatives see me at, you know, Christmas, what are they going
- 28:15to ask me about? Because all they've asked me
- 28:18about for the last 15 years is this just like when I go on a
- 28:21show, people go, oh, he's the guy who collects pirate cards.
- 28:26I, I, I don't see myself letting that affect my, my collecting of
- 28:34pirate cards or not. I think everything is for sale.
- 28:40Everything is for sale, but some things are really expensive and
- 28:45they're more expensive for somebody to pay me than it would
- 28:51be to pay anybody else for, you know what I mean?
- 28:55So I don't know if I answered your question.
- 28:58Well, we're 30 minutes in. Good grief, how is this
- 29:02happening? We just on the show.
- 29:05All right, let's let's do this. Let's take a look at some cards
- 29:08because I you know, that comment always happens.
- 29:10We're 30 minutes in and we haven't even seen a card yet.
- 29:13OK, let's we at. Least spoke about cards early
- 29:16on. Last time it took us 22 minutes
- 29:17to even talk about cards in general.
- 29:19So let's look at the 48 leaf set and let's look at some cards
- 29:24from your collection. OK in question.
- 29:26And you chose these cards for a reason.
- 29:30These I would consider chase cards because they're chase
- 29:36cards and they're Chase cards. I see how you did that.
- 29:40I like it. All right, here we go.
- 29:43Tell me, why did you pull these cards and want these to be
- 29:46included in this discussion? So these are part of my leaf
- 29:50Hall of Fame run, right? And they, man, I love these.
- 29:54I, I love looking at them because of how nice they look
- 29:58for a leaf card, right? They are centered.
- 30:00I love these low grade cards that I have, in my opinion,
- 30:05nice. I appeal at least for myself and
- 30:09they are just so hard to find that look like this.
- 30:12And both of these were not my first, second or third version
- 30:16of this card. I've bought them and then I've
- 30:19upgraded to a new version of it as I found a better one.
- 30:23So it has been a long, long quest to even get these.
- 30:27But now I'm at the point where it would be probably hard for me
- 30:31to upgrade either of those two cards like I again, I don't need
- 30:34a six. I don't need it to be a seven.
- 30:36I'm fine with looking good centered and and it's one of
- 30:42these Hall of Farmers that are part of the set.
- 30:45But now that I've had these for a while, they don't do the same
- 30:50for me as when I look at my Ted Williams or Joe DiMaggio or
- 30:56Jackie Robinson, those kind of cards, or stamp usual or any of
- 31:01my short prints, those are also included in this.
- 31:04I mean, they are relatively easy to get, not looking like this.
- 31:09But do I need a Bobby Door card in my collection?
- 31:15I don't know. Why do I?
- 31:17Have the list that's needed. Why do I need to have these when
- 31:20I'm I'm making a list? This isn't I'm a flight
- 31:22collector. I care about like the specific
- 31:25cards and for some reason I made a rule for myself that I'm
- 31:28collecting the Hall of Farmers. Why did I do that?
- 31:31Yeah, I don't. That's the whole point of the
- 31:33the conversation. And and if you're listening, the
- 31:36cards that David's been talking about for the last three minutes
- 31:40are the Leaf Bobby Door in APSA 2, would it, which is insanely
- 31:46well centered. It is a newer label.
- 31:49Again, I'm just describing it so you can envision it if you're
- 31:52listening only. And then in an SGC holder, an
- 31:56SGC 3.5, we have a Luke Appling, which is also very well
- 32:01centered. I mean, they have honest
- 32:04corners, but I agree that these cards both have really nice eye
- 32:09appeal. I don't know, I, I understand
- 32:15why you would want these two cards, but I also understand why
- 32:19you would not need these two cards in your collection.
- 32:23But you have them in your collection.
- 32:25So what you're saying is I want them in my collection.
- 32:29So is it, is it a feeling of, well, if I'm going to be the
- 32:34leaf guy, then I got to have all the hall of farmers from the
- 32:38leaf set. How could you not have all the
- 32:41hall of farmers from the leaf set if you're the leaf guy?
- 32:44No, it's not that. That's what I was asking you and
- 32:46and I, I agree with you. I have the self esteem to not
- 32:49have to feel that way too, thankfully.
- 32:52But it's just one of those things where because I love the
- 32:55set so much, I kind of gave myself a target right of ways
- 33:00for me to enjoy the set because I could say, listen, I could
- 33:05just get a flight of the 8 cards that I love.
- 33:09I also forgot to mention the Ruth.
- 33:11I really love that card too, which some people don't, but
- 33:14they're, you know, even if we're to leave, there could be 12
- 33:16cards, but do I need it to be 22 cards?
- 33:19And I, I kind of agree with a lot of what you said.
- 33:23Also by me choosing to have these cards, it's really saying
- 33:26that I'd rather have these cards than something else because I do
- 33:31not have unlimited resources. So I know I can get, you know,
- 33:36listen, these aren't the top hall of Famers, but it is hard
- 33:38to find cards that look relatively centered for leaf
- 33:41collectors. So I know I could get a nice
- 33:43premium for these cards. Would I rather condense them for
- 33:47a big card to buy at the National?
- 33:50I mean, it's one of those things you have to sometimes weigh as
- 33:54you're going through your collection to figure out what
- 33:56you want to keep. If I had all the money in the
- 33:58world, I'd keep everything right.
- 34:01Yeah, OK. So one of the things that I
- 34:07recently had a conversation with Darren return to collecting on
- 34:11our Off Topic episode, which has now aired as this is being heard
- 34:17on Darren's channel. And a big part of the
- 34:19conversation was Darren, what the heck?
- 34:22You're selling a bunch of cards every month on CIA.
- 34:25What are you doing? You're you were selling like
- 34:28some OK cards, nice cards. And now you're selling like, you
- 34:32know, this month he's selling a Yogi Berra Bowman in APSA 6,
- 34:38like big time cards. He's selling.
- 34:41What are you doing? And he's like, I could get this
- 34:44card back someday. I could get this card back.
- 34:47But now as we have on the screen, a leaf Johnny Mize in
- 34:54APSA three, also a relatively new holder and new grade, and a
- 34:59leaf Joe Gordon in an SGC 3.5. Again, both are insanely well
- 35:07centered cards. But if I were to say to you,
- 35:11well, yeah, I mean, you could get another Johnny Mize or you
- 35:14could get another Joe Gordon, but could you get another Johnny
- 35:18Mize? I mean, that Johnny Mize card is
- 35:20notorious for being way off center.
- 35:23You might be able to get another Johnny Mayes, but could you get
- 35:26a Johnny Mayes that's centered like that?
- 35:28Probably not. So sometimes being able to
- 35:32reacquire the card versus being able to acquire reacquire a card
- 35:37that looks like this example might be completely different
- 35:41things. Yeah.
- 35:42You're right. And so that's, I can't think of
- 35:45it as I would buy these ever again if I were to let these go
- 35:50because it's, it's taken years and, and again, I, I am really
- 35:55eccentric. I am looking at every listing of
- 35:58a leaf card that comes on every auction house, including eBay
- 36:02every day, OK, to try to find the centered versions, which is
- 36:07why these are the 4th, 5th versions of it.
- 36:10So if I were to let him go, it is a little different than
- 36:13Darren because it would be very, I just care so much about
- 36:19centering and for Leaf, they are so hard to find that they really
- 36:23would be tough to replace. So it has to be a situation
- 36:26where I've let it go, I've let it go, I've let my babies go to
- 36:31other collectors that will enjoy it hopefully as much as I have.
- 36:35And it's not a for sure thing that I'm going to do this.
- 36:38But it's just a thought because I it's hard in this market to
- 36:43just come up with more and more money to be able to buy cards.
- 36:46I'm going to the National and I want to have a budget.
- 36:49I want to have money for cards. I've sold a bunch and I've been
- 36:52buying a bunch. But the newer ones that I buy, I
- 36:55love them more than a lot of times.
- 36:57The ones that I've had for a while and just these are cards
- 37:01that even though I love them and I love that it helps me be a
- 37:04completionist, but that's the game of being a completionist.
- 37:08It's gamifying the hobby to be a set collector or to go through a
- 37:12player run to do these kind of things.
- 37:14But does the game really matter when you fulfill the game,
- 37:19right? You won, OK, you did it.
- 37:20I collected them all. And now when I look at those
- 37:23cards, listen, they're, they're kind of in the back of my
- 37:26collection and I'm not like going through those the same way
- 37:29as I go through cards that I've picked up more recently that get
- 37:35my juices flowing. So that's where just telling me
- 37:38that. Game is never done.
- 37:41I, I, I mean, I use golf as an example because even when Tiger
- 37:46Woods was at his peak, he still could have been better.
- 37:50You know, for years I wanted to shoot under par and I'd shot
- 37:54even par, even par, even par. And then I finally shot 71.
- 37:58I shot one under and I was like, I did it.
- 38:01And then I said, well, now I got to see if I can shoot in the
- 38:0460s. And it's, there's always
- 38:07something that you can strive for.
- 38:10So you're never done, which is why it's fun.
- 38:14The things where you can be done aren't actually that they're not
- 38:22the same. They're not the same.
- 38:24So yes, I have the full set of pirate carts.
- 38:28I mean, look at this cart. So on the screen, I've got an
- 38:32SGC 5 Blackbeard. I mean, that card, that card was
- 38:41printed, you know, a couple of decades after the Civil War.
- 38:45Dude, this was, it's a, it's a bad ass card.
- 38:48I mean, it is amazing. 25 years before World War One that was in
- 38:53a pack of tobacco. I mean, that is such a cool
- 38:56card. And I think on the universal
- 39:00pop, if you look at all the grading companies, I think there
- 39:02are like 8 or 9 that are graded higher than this one.
- 39:07I mean, and I've seen some of them and and this one looks
- 39:10better than some of those. I saw a 7 and my 5 is better
- 39:14than the seven if. You saw a seven that looked
- 39:18better than this. Would you be trying to upgrade
- 39:20it? I don't think I could afford to
- 39:23upgrade it because I think that that is a more significant card
- 39:28than you realize that it is. So I don't I would, I would have
- 39:35to. I mean, I mean, if a 7 is is
- 39:40well into the, I mean, it's, it's probably a a legit seven
- 39:46that looks better than this. I think it's a 15, the $20,000
- 39:52card. And let me just make up a story,
- 39:54just because, you know, this isn't what we're doing.
- 39:57We're just, we're just talking out loud.
- 39:59How about if you could trade the rest of your pirate cards and
- 40:04this card for that card? Would you do it?
- 40:11Would I trade my 5 and the whole set for A7 if the seven?
- 40:19Oh man, if the seven, that's a really good question.
- 40:25If the seven was legit, a legit 7 and I'm not just upgrading all
- 40:32this for a number and it was a legit seven that deserved A7, I
- 40:40think I might, I think I would do that.
- 40:41I I think there's 18, There's one or two eights, There's a
- 40:46couple of sevens, there's a couple of sixes.
- 40:52If it was the highest ever grade, like if it was an 8 and
- 40:57there are no other eights, I would do it for sure to have the
- 41:01best copy in the world of it. I would do that 100%.
- 41:04Not even. I would do that plus the next
- 41:07top three cards in my collection for the best one on Earth.
- 41:12Wait and then would you then start over and collect the
- 41:16pirate cards again? I see.
- 41:19I knew that question was coming, so I've already processed that.
- 41:25Probably not OK. Probably.
- 41:28Not answers a lot, that answers a lot and I'm gonna put that on
- 41:31my terms just to to put it for my leaf heads out there.
- 41:35If that same thing happened with the Satchel Paige card or that
- 41:39Jackie in a one that had the staple hole, which is the whole
- 41:41reason why I'm on sports cards live, I would probably trade all
- 41:45of my leaf cards for those two cards also.
- 41:49Yeah, let me just show a couple more cards because it's like, do
- 41:55I only like the Blackbeard? No, this is Captain Morgan.
- 41:59Like the rum, this is this card has become a bigger card as
- 42:06things have gone on. He wasn't as famous as of a
- 42:09pirate as Blackbeard or the third one I'm going to show you.
- 42:13But he's famous for that reason. So he's more recognizable.
- 42:17So this card has a decent amount of value.
- 42:20So my captain I, I, I'm guessing that he probably was.
- 42:26And this one's in an SGC 4.5 if you're listening.
- 42:30And then the third one I'll show another card that I think is
- 42:35pretty cool. A fairly well known pirate name
- 42:39is Captain Kidd. It's not as big of a name
- 42:43obviously as Blackbeard, but this would be one of the bigger
- 42:46names. And again, I I just think that's
- 42:50a gorgeous card. And this is in an SGC. 4I love
- 42:56these things and I understand why some people would go what
- 43:00are you doing? Like I look at some of these
- 43:03animal cards and it's like a cheetah.
- 43:06Like why do you want that someone go?
- 43:08Why do you want Captain Morgan like it?
- 43:11It, it doesn't make, it doesn't have to make sense to somebody
- 43:15else. It only has to make sense to us.
- 43:19I don't think we've I don't think we've accomplished
- 43:21anything. And we're 40.
- 43:22Three, I know, but I just want, I want to go back on one thing
- 43:25which I probably cut you off and I wanted to hear kind of what
- 43:27your response is more. If you were to sell your whole
- 43:32set to get the one Blackbeard card, why wouldn't you?
- 43:37If you love this set so much, why would you not start it again
- 43:42if you had to consolidate for that one card?
- 43:44What's the reason for that? How many people and, and I'm,
- 43:51I'm guessing the numbers not huge.
- 43:53So let's just, I'm gonna, I'm gonna guess a number.
- 43:57How many people have made it to the summit of Mount Everest?
- 44:03What would you guess? 5000.
- 44:07OK, let's say it's 5000. How many people do you think
- 44:11have gone to the summit of Mount Everest?
- 44:13Twice. It's.
- 44:15Probably more than 5000, by the way, But let's say you know, if
- 44:22it was 5000, let's say 800 have done it twice.
- 44:25Right. I would, I would say maybe less,
- 44:27but OK. The reason I believe is because
- 44:31why I've already made it to the top.
- 44:35I've already done the feat that seemed impossible and forever I
- 44:42did that. And now that you've done it,
- 44:45you've done it. Like there are certain things
- 44:49like that you've done. And once you've done it, you've
- 44:55accomplished it. And the sense of accomplishment,
- 44:58the sense of accomplishment is a lot of a lot of what drives us
- 45:03for things. And and then once the
- 45:07accomplishment has happened, doing it again.
- 45:11I can't imagine it feels as good making it to the summit of Mount
- 45:16Everest the second time as it did the first time.
- 45:19The first time had to have been better than the second.
- 45:23I agree, but there's some people who trained to run a marathon
- 45:26and then after they run it once and they get that feeling they
- 45:29still do it again. Those people are runners.
- 45:35Those aren't people. Those aren't people who the
- 45:38accomplishment was a goal of trying to.
- 45:44I mean, there are people who their thing is to run and then
- 45:47there are people who say, who sit on the couch all day like
- 45:51me. And they say, I wonder if I
- 45:54could ever get to the point where I could run a whole
- 45:57marathon. And then once you do that, those
- 46:00people, the couch to marathon person, I have a feeling, aren't
- 46:05frequent goers, but runners. They run.
- 46:09That's what they do. And I mean, we're probably
- 46:12beating a dead horse, but you've also said when we started this
- 46:14conversation that they are the most beautiful cards in the
- 46:17world. And that doesn't take it away
- 46:19from them being the most beautiful cards in the world if
- 46:22you own them or do not own them. So it does surprise me a little
- 46:25bit when you say it like that, for you to not want to at least
- 46:29pick up a few of them, even if you ended up selling it in that
- 46:33hypothetical situation. Because you love beauty of
- 46:36cards, don't you, Greg? I I do love beauty and cards.
- 46:40All right, I'm going to show you this real quick.
- 46:43Let's see, as of December 2020, five 7563 different people have
- 46:52successfully summited Mount Everest.
- 46:56So. 5000 was a good guess. I'm actually impressed with
- 46:58myself. Yeah, Everybody out there that
- 47:00was hating on you, they need to recognize that you're actually a
- 47:03good estimator of climbing. All right, buddy, we're 47
- 47:07minutes. We're past.
- 47:08I mean, we're on the back half of the curve.
- 47:11People have completely said what are we doing here?
- 47:16So we're going to go ahead and shut this one down again.
- 47:20We can be found every two weeks. Every two weeks we can be found
- 47:28on Saturday mornings on The Sports Card, Clubhouse Channel
- 47:34and The Goal. One show.
- 47:36The number one show. The goal is to stay number one.
- 47:40Right to stay #1 Again, any show that has teapot or has Chris
- 47:48Sewell is clear violation of competitive equity standards.
- 47:55So at this point, this is the number one show.
- 48:00And that's right. Auction Wire, our friends at
- 48:03Auction Wire, they sponsor this show.
- 48:08So what can we, what more can we say?
- 48:10And I was going to show Auction Wire and what I was going to
- 48:13show is there's a set that I love.
- 48:17And somebody was asking me the other day on on my channel.
- 48:22It was on Wednesday. They said, what is the what is
- 48:26the next set that you think you could get your get into?
- 48:30And I mentioned a couple and one of them was the N2 set, which is
- 48:36the N it is the Native Americans.
- 48:41Now the problem with N2 is we get a bunch of N2 whatevers.
- 48:46The one that I N76 is one that I liked a lot that I mentioned.
- 48:54We're getting watches on here. What do you think's up with
- 48:57that? You know some, it just knows
- 49:00that you need a Rolex at the same time but.
- 49:03Is this? Yeah.
- 49:04Is that what you ended up buying from my buddy Ryan?
- 49:09The from at West Coast Card Show?
- 49:12I bought an N2 sitting bowl. Got it.
- 49:16An N2 sitting bowl I threw in SGCI.
- 49:19Probably should have done that before Is is selected A grade.
- 49:22That's what threw everything off but the N 76 set.
- 49:27I love the N 76 set. Another one that I love a lot
- 49:31that a buddy of mine named David also collects is the N 222,
- 49:37which is the Kinney set. Look at this card.
- 49:39Tell me this card's not awesome. That is pretty cool.
- 49:44That's an awesome card. So all right anyway again,
- 49:51auction wire fun way to just just even for browsing purposes.
- 49:56You can choose whatever grades you want.
- 49:58I How many you? Want me to tell me what I do how
- 50:02I do with with auction wire that's a little different than
- 50:04what you do. I, I take away eBay because I am
- 50:10always on eBay, like when I'm, when I have a break during my
- 50:14day, probably a a non healthy amount of times.
- 50:20I am like just going through my watch list and seeing which,
- 50:24which has a new availability of a card.
- 50:28And I just kind of go through that list like, you know, the
- 50:29seven cards that became available over the last two
- 50:32hours. And because I do that so often
- 50:35on eBay, I don't need it to show me eBay.
- 50:37So I like it to show me all the other auction houses outside of
- 50:40eBay because or 90% of the views are of eBay.
- 50:44So I use it for everything but eBay.
- 50:47And, and it's interesting you say that because a couple of
- 50:50people that I know that tried auction wire early on,
- 50:53especially before they added some of their other auction
- 50:57houses and, and places that they search is they said I'm only
- 51:02getting eBay is, is my listings. And my response was like, but
- 51:07yeah, I mean, eBay has a ton of the listings and how many
- 51:12auctions are currently running right now?
- 51:15So the N 22 set, 222 set, there's only 9 total that are
- 51:21for sale right now. So of course a lot of them are
- 51:24going to be on eBay. But there are also times where,
- 51:28you know, REA's got an auction going and Golden's got an
- 51:32auction going and Love of the Game's got an auction going and
- 51:36you might see more. NCIA.
- 51:38And CIA there. You go, Theo.
- 51:41There you go. Collector, Investor, auctions.
- 51:43That's Theo right there. It should just say Theo's.
- 51:46Group, There you go. I'm Theo.
- 51:47I'm I'm a big fan of Theo. I I tell them on that podcast
- 51:51that I want Theo to be on the screen at all times and I don't
- 51:54like that he only shows up for 17 seconds an episode.
- 51:57I tell him what he is is He's like Baba Booey, I say.
- 52:02I said Chris is really Howard, Jeremy is Robin Quivers and
- 52:08you're Baba Booey, who sometimes they call into the studio and
- 52:12then they throw right back out. Papa.
- 52:15Booey, Papa booey, all right, if you know, you know if you don't,
- 52:18you don't. All right, buddy, great times.
- 52:22Appreciate everybody listening. If you made it to the end,
- 52:25fantastic. Again, auction wire promo code
- 52:27is midlife and our new outro coming at you right about Oh, do
- 52:37you want to sing us out first? Of course, Greg, how did?
- 52:40You got 1, You got 1. I always have one.
- 52:43This one will be, you know what, you guys get a commercial from
- 52:46the 80s. That was on my Saturday morning
- 52:47cartoons right here. Are you ready?
- 52:49And it goes like this. Pizza in the morning, pizza in
- 52:53the evening, pizza anytime. If you could have pizza on a
- 52:57bagel, you could have pizza anytime.
