- 0:13Welcome to The 405 Payroll.
- 0:15I'm Claire Brooks, and this is the show that turns Oklahoma City's live hiring news
- 0:20into something you can use today.
- 0:22And I'm Miles.
- 0:23Today's headline is a job posting.
- 0:25A company in northwest Oklahoma City, zip code 73132, is hiring packaging assistants
- 0:31at $22 to $23 an hour, full time, and the listing says plainly that previous
- 0:36packaging or warehouse experience is not required.
- 0:39Training is provided.
- 0:41Most entry level warehouse listings here start much lower.
- 0:44ZipRecruiter put the average Oklahoma City warehouse wage at $16.21 an hour as of
- 0:50October 13th, so this posting sits about six dollars above that.
- 0:55Six dollars an hour full time is around a thousand dollars more a month before
- 0:58taxes.
- 0:59That's not a slightly better month, that's a different month.
- 1:03Claire, tell them why rent makes this matter.
- 1:05Apartment List's October report puts median rent in Oklahoma City at $1,114 a month,
- 1:12$919 for a one bedroom and $1,139 for a two bedroom.
- 1:18And rents are up 4.1 percent so far this year, through September.
- 1:23That growth ranked us number 20 among the hundred largest cities for September.
- 1:28We're still cheaper than most places, about 19.7 percent below the national median
- 1:33according to Apartment List.
- 1:35Apartments.com puts the average across all listings at $936.
- 1:40Different sources, different math, so your own lease is the number that counts.
- 1:45Here's the arithmetic, and it's only arithmetic.
- 1:48The common guideline is rent at no more than 30 percent of gross pay.
- 1:53For $936 to $1,114, that's about $3,120 to
- 1:59$3,713 a month, or $37,440 to
- 2:05$44,556 a year.
- 2:09And $15 an hour full time is roughly $2,600 a month gross, around $2,100 after
- 2:15taxes.
- 2:16A $936 rent is already over 40 percent of that.
- 2:21At $1,114, it's more than half.
- 2:25That's not a failure of effort.
- 2:27The wage and the rent were just set by different people.
- 2:30Now look at $21 to $23 an hour: $3,640 to $3,986 a month gross,
- 2:37or $43,680 to $47,840 a year.
- 2:42That clears the guideline for both of those rents.
- 2:45So today we cover who's hiring, the training that gets you to the next rung,
- 2:49extra money you can start this week, and what keeps a raise from slipping away.
- 2:53Plus a true story and one thing to do before dinner.
