- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. Hello everyone. It is good to be here again. Lucas: Today we are going somewhere very practical. We are going to the hardware store. Luna: Oh, I love that place. Or I would, if I knew what everything was called. Lucas: It is easier than you think. We will learn five simple phrases. Luna: Five phrases? That sounds manageable. What is the first one? Lucas: The most important question you can ask. 'Wo ist...'. This means 'Where is...'. Listen closely. Lucas: 'Wo ist...'. Now try it. Luna: 'Wo ist...'. Okay, where is it? Lucas: Perfect. You can use this for anything. The bathroom, the hammer, the exit. Luna: I like that flexibility. So if I need the bathroom, I say 'Wo ist die Toilette'? Lucas: Exactly. And in a hardware store, you might ask 'Wo ist der Nagel'? Where is the nail? Luna: 'Wo ist der Nagel'. Got it. Let us move to the second phrase. Lucas: Right. If you know what you want, you say 'Ich suche...'. This means 'I am looking for...'. Listen. Lucas: 'Ich suche...'. Your turn. Luna: 'Ich suche...'. That feels direct. I like it. Lucas: It is polite and clear. You could say 'Ich suche eine Lampe'. I am looking for a lamp. Luna: 'Ich suche eine Lampe'. Nice. So I combine them? 'Wo ist der Nagel? Ich suche einen Nagel.'? Lucas: Yes, exactly. You can ask where it is, or tell them you are looking for it. Luna: Okay, I feel confident. What about when I find something but I am not sure? Lucas: Good question. Then you ask 'Haben Sie...?'. This means 'Do you have...?'. Listen. Lucas: 'Haben Sie...?'. Try it. Luna: 'Haben Sie...?'. Do you have it? Lucas: Correct. 'Haben Sie Schrauben'? Do you have screws? Luna: 'Haben Sie Schrauben'. Okay. This is getting easy. Lucas: It is because the structure is consistent. Now, let us talk about price. Luna: Ah, yes. Money matters. What do I ask? Lucas: You ask 'Wie viel kostet das?'. This means 'How much does that cost?'. Listen carefully. Lucas: 'Wie viel kostet das?'. Repeat after me. Luna: 'Wie viel kostet das?'. How much does that cost? Lucas: Spot on. You can point at an item and ask this. Luna: So if I pick up a drill, I say 'Wie viel kostet das?'. Lucas: Yes. And finally, when you find exactly what you need, you say 'Das ist genau richtig.'. Luna: That is my favorite phrase. It sounds so satisfying. Lucas: It is. It means 'That is exactly right.' Listen to the rhythm. Lucas: 'Das ist genau richtig.'. Your turn. Luna: 'Das ist genau richtig.'. Yes! That feels perfect. Lucas: Let us review the whole set quickly. 'Wo ist...'. 'Ich suche...'. 'Haben Sie...?'. 'Wie viel kostet das?'. 'Das ist genau richtig.'. Luna: 'Wo ist...'. 'Ich suche...'. 'Haben Sie...?'. 'Wie viel kostet das?'. 'Das ist genau richtig.'. Lucas: Excellent repetition. Now, let us imagine a scene. Luna: Okay, I am in the store. I need a screwdriver. Lucas: You walk up to the counter. What do you say? Luna: I say 'Hallo. Ich suche einen Schraubendreher.'. Lucas: Good. The clerk might show you one. You pick it up. Luna: I look at the tag. 'Wie viel kostet das?'. Lucas: He tells you the price. It is cheap. You are happy. Luna: I smile and say 'Das ist genau richtig.'. Lucas: Perfect transaction. You bought the tool and spoke the language. Luna: I feel like I could fix my whole house now. Lucas: Just maybe start with the lightbulb before the roof. Luna: Ha. Good point. One step at a time. Lucas: Let us practice 'Wo ist...' one more time. Be specific. Luna: 'Wo ist der Hammer?'. Lucas: Yes. 'Wo ist der Bohrer?'. Luna: 'Wo ist der Bohrer?'. Lucas: Great. Now 'Ich suche...'. Make it plural. Luna: 'Ich suche Nägel.'. Lucas: Nails. Correct. 'Haben Sie Farbe?'. Luna: 'Haben Sie Farbe?'. Lucas: Paint. Very useful. 'Wie viel kostet das?'. Luna: 'Wie viel kostet das?'. Lucas: And the closing line. 'Das ist genau richtig.'. Luna: 'Das ist genau richtig.'. Lucas: You are doing wonderfully. These phrases work anywhere you shop. Luna: Even at the grocery store? Lucas: Absolutely. 'Ich suche Milch'. 'Wie viel kostet das?'. Luna: Oh, that is handy. I did not realize how universal these were. Lucas: That is the beauty of basics. They open many doors. Luna: Speaking of opening doors, do you have a moment for our supporters? Lucas: Of course. Lucas: You are already using it naturally. 'Ich suche den Schlüssel.' Luna: Yes. 'Haben Sie ihn?'. Lucas: He hands it to you. 'Wie viel kostet das?'. Luna: He smiles. 'Das ist genau richtig.'. Lucas: See? You are a natural shopper. Luna: I guess I am. This was fun. Lucas: It really was. Let us repeat 'Das ist genau richtig.' one last time. Luna: 'Das ist genau richtig.'. Lucas: And 'Wie viel kostet das?'. Luna: 'Wie viel kostet das?'. Lucas: Well done, Luna. You earned a break. Luna: I think I deserve it. My brain is full of screws. Lucas: Or nails. Either way, great work. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. See you next time. Lucas: Bye for now. Practice these till we chat again.
