- 0:00Welcome to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show, where with Dan Hurley, as
- 0:04the Huskies continue as the number one team in the country. They've won seven
- 0:09in a row now seventeen and two, and coach, we haven't talked for
- 0:13a little bit. Let's catch up. A lot of good things happening for
- 0:17Yukon right now. Tenth time in the history of the school. You're a
- 0:20number one team, first time since nine and that and that club under Jim
- 0:25Calhoun. Now as a coach, you've never been a number one coach.
- 0:29And I know it's only January and it's a thing, But what's that been
- 0:34like for you? Is it a little different in anyway? I don't think
- 0:38so. I think you know number one being you know, number one being
- 0:42number one, you know, midway through the year, Yah, while dealing
- 0:46with some adversities from an injury standpoint, continue to be able to win when
- 0:51you look at it in its totality, Yeah, we still have you know,
- 0:55a large part of our season you have to play. But over the
- 0:58last year and a half, up until this point last season, up until
- 1:00this point this season, I think you know, we've been the best college
- 1:04program in the country in terms of you know, the amount of winning we've
- 1:08done, but we would like to be able to say that at the end
- 1:12of the season. Yeah, that's the best part, right. You have
- 1:17won forty eight of fifty eight games the Huskies over these last year and a
- 1:21half, I think impressive as a number one in the history of the school.
- 1:26Eighteen and three on the road, I mean, you got a couple
- 1:29of you got to win at Villanova on the road. As a number one
- 1:30team, everyone's gunning for you. It is a little different, isn't it
- 1:34when you're the team that everyone says, well, you're the best team in
- 1:38the country. Yeah, I think it's not that big of an adjustment.
- 1:42You know, when you're coming in with the championship. I think when you're
- 1:46playing at defending champs number one, number two, everyone wants to beat Yukon
- 1:51and basketball the number three. You know, we've had a high ranking the
- 1:55whole year, and the number one just intensifies it so well, you know,
- 2:00well, since I've gotten here, you realize that Yukon has circled on
- 2:05everyone's calendar. It's a big game for anyone that we play, and now
- 2:08you've just got a little bit bigger target. But the target's always been big.
- 2:13Hey, winning on the road. I know you talk about it quite
- 2:15a bit. You've got three in a row on the road now at very
- 2:19difficult places. What have you learned about this group of players in these last
- 2:23three road wins you've been able to accomplish. Yeah, I mean we're able
- 2:29to do two of those, you know, with that Donovan Obviously, Donovan's
- 2:34you know, has a huge impact on things here, you know, But
- 2:37I just really you know, love our response from the from the seat in
- 2:40the hall game. That was a disappointing moment, uncharacteristic performance and competitiveness by
- 2:46us, you know. And then the response has been, you know,
- 2:50to win, to win seven Big East games in a row, three of
- 2:53which are on the road, and majority of those were with one of the
- 2:57most impactful players in the cuntry. So we responded like a championship level program.
- 3:05Yeah, Yukon now six and two in the quad I area. That's
- 3:08second best I think in America. And you know the Big East Dan,
- 3:14right now, three of the schools are in the top twenty. I think
- 3:16six in the top thirty if I'm not mistaken. So you've been saying this
- 3:22all long this this is a tough conference. I don't know why nationally everyone's
- 3:25behind behind on that one. Everywhere I go, they talk about the Big
- 3:30Twelve, they talk about the Big Ten, they talk about these other conferences.
- 3:34Maybe it's because we see this stuff day in and day out, and
- 3:38I watch a million basketball games. I'm sure you're watching everything too. I
- 3:42don't I just don't get it. Why is the Big East kind of like
- 3:45behind the rest of these conferences in terms of respect? Yeah, you know,
- 3:51I don't really know. I don't know the answer to that. I
- 3:55think, you know, maybe it's, uh, maybe it's something about the
- 4:00Northeast. But then again, you know, ESPN is located in Connecticut,
- 4:08you know, and you got the men's and women's team both playing the Big
- 4:11East, and and uh, you know, I really don't know. I
- 4:15I I get to definitely get the you know, the Big Twelve, no
- 4:18doubt, you know, it's it's a tremendous league, and those those games,
- 4:24Uh you know, I think, uh, you know that that's certainly
- 4:27a conference that you could make a case is the best in the country.
- 4:31But you could also make a case that the Big East is the best in
- 4:34the country. And when you when you look at our top top seven or
- 4:40eight teams in our league, it is uh, you know it, it's
- 4:45tough sled and and uh you go into some you know, really really tough
- 4:48environments in terms of the you know, the crowds. You know wells Fargo,
- 4:56Uh, you know that that was a heck of an environment. A
- 5:00Centaut Center was a heck of an environment. Hinkle is a tough place to
- 5:02win. You know, these are all hard places to win, and the
- 5:06physicality of our games is just another level. Yeah, it's funny when you
- 5:13go into these places and obviously no one wants you to win. You have
- 5:16no friends in those building except family and friends. Obviously, the team seems
- 5:21to be responding well to it. I love it because really good teams are
- 5:26able to play anywhere and they don't need the home crowd in the sense on
- 5:30a nightly basis to win games. What is it about this team that seems
- 5:34to be able to stay focused, stay in their lane when eighteen thousand are
- 5:40rooting against them. Yeah, you know, I think, you know,
- 5:44we've got a lot of confidence. We work incredibly hard. I think,
- 5:47you know, confidence and poise and being able to think clearly under pressure.
- 5:53It comes from great preparation, It comes from extraordinary work ethic from you know,
- 6:00players and a coaching staff around me that that's got pedigree and expects to
- 6:09be successful. Yeah, and it certainly just helps that we carried Aura with
- 6:14us on to the court. These days of being a championship level program.
- 6:20You know, we've got that right now. We've got players that have done
- 6:25that, that are playing in critical spots and that certainly helps the psyche.
- 6:29Yeah, we'll focus on some of those guys have had some great opera,
- 6:32great games here in the most recent past with Dan Hurley will continue. This
- 6:36is the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show on Liarfield
