Transcript
- 0:11Hello, and welcome to the podcast.
- 0:13I'm Nick. That's Kristen Today, and we're
- 0:14talking about that mall store that defined you as a teenager.
- 0:19And there's a movie that we might have to show our daughter,
- 0:22but it might scar her for life. So what do we do?
- 0:26First thing what mall store defined you as a teenager,
- 0:29Kristen? Oh, man, I mean, you asked me
- 0:31this question and it's like so many things came to mind because
- 0:34the mall was, I mean, imagine the 90s, like the malls on a
- 0:39weekend was the place to be. It was hopping.
- 0:42It's where you had dates. It's where like you met up with
- 0:45friends. The food court wasn't sticky all
- 0:47the time. I I feel like the food court was
- 0:49still no, it was you had a nice mall.
- 0:51I didn't have a nice mall. Maybe that's what it was.
- 0:53I you walking by Dior and Chanel, you know, typical
- 0:57childhood things, right? No.
- 0:59Yeah. Like, we had AI grew up in
- 1:01Mission Viejo, CA, and we had just, like, the absolute worst
- 1:04mall. And then for some reason, it,
- 1:06like, got completely renovated and it became the hottest spot
- 1:09in town. And for me, the store inside of
- 1:12the mall that I always loved was Tilly's.
- 1:16So Tilly's is like for the surfers and the skaters.
- 1:20It sold like Volcom, it sold Roxy brands.
- 1:25Like it wasn't Pacsun. It wasn't Pacsun, but it was
- 1:29Tilly's had like vans that you could buy like the original
- 1:33Airwalks, not the ones you could buy at Payless now.
- 1:36Like it was like the top brand if you were a skater or a
- 1:39surfer. Now I was neither I.
- 1:41Surfed a little. Didn't you?
- 1:43Neither of any of those things. I was, that was not who I was as
- 1:46a person, but I wanted to be that person.
- 1:48And so I would go to those stores.
- 1:50But the problem is they were way too expensive for our family to
- 1:53like buy. You couldn't just go like back
- 1:56to school shopping at Tilly's because every shirt was like $50
- 1:59like even back then. Yeah, they were all every mall
- 2:02store. I never bought clothes at the
- 2:03mall. It was always so expensive.
- 2:05So the store that I hung out in only because you could listen to
- 2:09music on the walls with Sam Goody.
- 2:11Yeah, I was going to say it's got to be like FYE or.
- 2:14Yeah, there's a toy. Yeah, we didn't have FYE, we
- 2:16Suncoast. Do you remember Suncoast?
- 2:17Yeah. Oh my gosh.
- 2:18Suncoast was amazing because I loved the posters.
- 2:21Yeah, I still love going to Suncoast now.
- 2:23Like if you find one in the mall, you.
- 2:24Can't find a suncoast or a brown?
- 2:26Anymore, I feel like I saw one recently, not I mean not in our
- 2:29malls, but like I I think they're still out there.
- 2:32But yeah, you do some Googling while I talk about like, so Sam
- 2:35Goody for all the kids listening was a record store.
- 2:38Well, it wasn't a record store. No, it was ACD store.
- 2:41I wasn't, I wasn't cool enough to go to a record store.
- 2:43It was ACD store and they had all the CDs that you could buy,
- 2:46but I couldn't afford any. So you could go and you could
- 2:48listen to them on the walls. They'd have you let you preview
- 2:51the CD you put on the gross headphones.
- 2:53Now to think about it. They didn't have any like spray
- 2:55or anything. You would just put the.
- 2:56Headphones on. And you just listen to an album.
- 2:59And so I would go there and, like, just look at the music and
- 3:02then find a way to save it off the radio when it plays.
- 3:04This is the recording pond. Exactly.
- 3:06And then, yeah, Suncoast and hot dog.
- 3:10Hot dog on a stick. That's just 'cause you like the
- 3:12ladies at the hot dog. It's like some reason the
- 3:14lemonade tastes so much better here, I don't know what.
- 3:16It is so there's only two Suncoast stores in existence at
- 3:19at this moment. The Jacksonville NC mall haven't
- 3:25been there and then also the Beaver Creek Ohio mall.
- 3:29So Ohio or North Carolina is the only places you could go get a
- 3:33suncoast like album, record, movie poster we.
- 3:37Have stores like that now like it's.
- 3:39Not FYE, yeah. I guess, yeah.
- 3:41It doesn't have all the stuff that Suncoast did, but yeah,
- 3:43they do have throwback. It's kind of the target section.
- 3:47There's a section in all targets now that have like all the
- 3:49action figures from back in the day.
- 3:51Yeah, they don't sell posters. Posters are much less of a big
- 3:55deal than they used to be for me.
- 3:57Yeah. Oh, you mean for you like?
- 3:59I think in general, I would hope.
- 4:00So you grew up, right? I don't.
- 4:01Know I don't know if I did but I used to like just sit and go
- 4:05through the poster did you do that was that a thing yeah we
- 4:07like have the because they had the little shelves that's what
- 4:09I. Was just talking about.
- 4:10That was the best part. I know they have that in Walmart
- 4:12too so I would go and. Yeah, but it's all for kids.
- 4:14It's like it's just 9000 pictures of Stitch.
- 4:17Stitch on a beach. Yeah, they.
- 4:19All come. Sticking his tongue out.
- 4:20Stick in a Ferrari stitch. Doing other things.
- 4:23The girl stitch whatever the pink one's name is.
- 4:25Before that, they used to have hot girls.
- 4:28And so it was the era of Britney Spears and then like Christina
- 4:31Aguilera. So you're just like all the guys
- 4:33sitting in front? They had fancy cars and then
- 4:36there was always like a couple psychedelic funky ones that were
- 4:39like, oh, put these under a black light, you know?
- 4:42You had to like cross your eyes. Is it like?
- 4:43But I loved like that. Well, those were the Magic Eye
- 4:45ones. Those are the ones where the
- 4:47picture would post come out. I always think of mall rats.
- 4:49It's a boat. But anyways, no, you haven't
- 4:52seen it. So is it a boat?
- 4:55Yeah. It's a sailboat.
- 4:57But anyways, because he's trying to see it the whole movie.
- 4:59Is that how? It ends.
- 5:02Spoiler alert. But it's been like it's a 40
- 5:04year old plus movie or whatever. Not even but but yeah, like it
- 5:07was the movie posters were always my thing.
- 5:09I I loved the movie posters and I thought those were so cool.
- 5:12But yeah, now like you can go into like Hot Topic.
- 5:15I don't think they have the movie posters, but they'll have
- 5:17like the rolled posters shoved into a corner and there's just a
- 5:21variation of all the K pop Demon Hunter stuff.
- 5:23Talk about a place I can no longer hang out.
- 5:25You left me alone to go to hot top.
- 5:27You're like, oh, they have Superman stuff right there
- 5:28because super girls coming out soon.
- 5:30And so you left me to go in there and I was like, OK, And I
- 5:32walked in. I was like, Oh my God, I don't
- 5:34belong to like I felt like I walked in the church.
- 5:37It was like, Oh my God, what am I doing?
- 5:39Because everyone, it was so I was shocked by how everyone felt
- 5:43the fit fit, the vibe now. Oh yeah.
- 5:45Because, you know, two years ago, you go in there and they're
- 5:47a bunch of people like me, like walking around Hot Topic.
- 5:50They've somehow changed and re established themselves.
- 5:52Because I went in there and they were like tattooed girls and
- 5:55like, start like everyone had spikes in their face and you're
- 5:58just like, oh, hey. I'm so disappointed in Hot Topic
- 6:03because back in the day it was like the damn The Man store.
- 6:06Like you went in there and it was just like alternative
- 6:09clothing, Gothic clothing, off brands.
- 6:12And now you walk in there and they're like, here's the Harry
- 6:14Potter section, here's the Studio Ghibli section, here's
- 6:17the anime section, here's the like, whatever section.
- 6:21And it's just like, it's all corporate stuff.
- 6:22It's like, how can you be selling Disney stuff in here?
- 6:25A hot topic? I thought you were.
- 6:26Damn the man. Well, what was what was
- 6:28something you bought a Hot Topic before?
- 6:29Because maybe it was like, oh, you're going.
- 6:30For like concerts? Rolling Stones, Yeah.
- 6:32See Like yeah. But like you'd go to your.
- 6:34Parents that was corporate and so.
- 6:36But it would never was, you know, like now it's like you
- 6:38can't really you. I mean, obviously they still
- 6:39sell them, but it's so now it's like, you know, whatever it is,
- 6:42but like you would go in there because it would be the clothes
- 6:44that you couldn't find anywhere else.
- 6:46Now it's like, oh neat, another Hogwart shirt.
- 6:50Like it's. Just like.
- 6:51They can get. That anywhere they're gothish.
- 6:53No, that's what. I'm saying you got to go back
- 6:55in. The one that we went into.
- 6:56I was shocked. I don't know how hot topicy it
- 6:59was. I'm saying like, I normally feel
- 7:01OK in those places. I'm like, oh, this is cool.
- 7:02It's got all my nerd stuff. But I walked in and I was like,
- 7:04I don't know any of this crap. And it's like all dark.
- 7:06That's crazy. That would be really an an
- 7:08anomaly because you walk into Hot Topic now and it's like
- 7:11lounge fly Disney backpacks. Yeah, this one wasn't that one.
- 7:14It was very hot topic. I was like, I was shocked.
- 7:16This. Is the Clackamas one right?
- 7:18Yeah, Oregon. I was.
- 7:18Shocked. Go Clackamas Hot Topic.
- 7:20Thanks for keeping it real. Very made me very uncomfortable.
- 7:22Yeah. I was like, oh, this is not
- 7:24topic. And then I can't go into
- 7:25Spencer's anymore. I thought I liked things at
- 7:28Spencer's, but it was always the hot, the adult stuff in the back
- 7:30that I went there for. Yeah, could you go and you're
- 7:32like, this is cool. Like it's got all the cools and
- 7:34they don't have anything I like anymore.
- 7:35I don't need another wallet and it doesn't need to have a chain.
- 7:38I have enough mugs I don't have. I don't need a shirt that says
- 7:41like my where are my peeps at it?
- 7:43Yeah, it's all very. Spencer's has become like the
- 7:46niche store. It's like mostly adult toys,
- 7:49lava lamps and then like Bachelorette or bachelor items
- 7:53for like sashes or like inappropriate beanies that say
- 7:57just like the F word on it and you're just like, OK, like it
- 8:00doesn't even know what it is anymore.
- 8:01Yeah, but it that's always been in the back like.
- 8:04The back there was always a back session, but it wasn't all all
- 8:07of it. Now it feels like it's like 90%
- 8:09of the store. That's true.
- 8:09Like, I don't know how they get away with that stuff like the
- 8:12mall people not checking the bag of the store.
- 8:14And the one store that has potential is Box Lunch.
- 8:17Yeah, I I want to like Box Lunch.
- 8:20It has so much potential. It's on the it's on the cusp of
- 8:23being a good store. Every time I walk in, I'm like,
- 8:25you've got the brands that I like.
- 8:27You're you're targeting me millennials.
- 8:29But it's all weird crap and it's all too expensive.
- 8:32It's crazy expensive. It's like I.
- 8:34Don't need like that teacup pot set that has Harry Potter on it.
- 8:38It's just like you're almost there.
- 8:40You're like, and then I'm not going to pay $150.00 for it.
- 8:42So it's like that. Almost outside of my wheelhouse,
- 8:44yeah. So our daughter is now currently
- 8:47into Toy Story finally. I've been trying to get her to
- 8:50watch Toy. Story likes it.
- 8:51For forever, she saw Toy Story 1.
- 8:53He's like, OK. OK, then I.
- 8:55See where you're at it oed U on the feed the other day it's Toy
- 8:58Story two. I was like, you want to watch
- 8:59Toy Story 2? He's like, yeah, I said there's
- 9:02a 5 coming out that we can go see in the theater, right?
- 9:06She's only seen one movie in the theater she's in.
- 9:08I said well, we got to watch 343 and Four first do.
- 9:11You see where this is going. She watched one, loved it,
- 9:14watched 2, loved it. Now there's the third one and
- 9:18the third one I only have watched once because that's all
- 9:21I can stomach it. It was I I mean, we saw it in
- 9:25the movie theaters together and I was sobbing hysterically at
- 9:30the end. Like hysterically.
- 9:31Like, I don't think other than the, the, the 1st 10 minutes of
- 9:34up, I don't think there's been another animated movie that has
- 9:38destroyed me quite in this way. And we had this discussion the
- 9:41other day because we're like, do we show it to her knowing that
- 9:43it's like deeply like not upsetting, but like deeply, like
- 9:48powerful in the messaging and the, and you brought up the
- 9:51point, like, will she even get it?
- 9:52She's 7. Does she understand the impact
- 9:55of what she's seeing? Because obviously if you haven't
- 9:56seen Toy Story, like Andy's growing up or whatever, the
- 10:00toys, I forget how it happens, but at some point they end up in
- 10:03the incinerator. They're.
- 10:04Getting they're holding. Hands like wishing each saying
- 10:08like I'm so glad I got to play with you one last time like yes,
- 10:11like this is exactly how I wanted to go.
- 10:13I mean it's like it's so meaningful and somehow they get
- 10:16saved and then they get donated to Bonnie, which is the younger
- 10:20kid and Andy like says goodbye and he's going off to college
- 10:24and he like plays with them one last time.
- 10:26By the way, perfect end to the trilogy.
- 10:28It was great. It would have ended if it had
- 10:30ended there. Yeah, it would have been
- 10:32perfect. Perfect.
- 10:33Scene 4 mostly. I've seen parts of four and I'm
- 10:36like, OK, it wasn't bad. People have big opinions about
- 10:39Four Key. Yeah.
- 10:40Well, yeah, that's fine. But yeah, 3, 2 was actually
- 10:45worse than I remember it being because 2 was about him growing
- 10:49up and and forgetting him. And that's where I started, like
- 10:52looking at her while she was doing it, like watching it.
- 10:54I'm like looking over and like seeing if she's understanding
- 10:57what it is. And she kind of got it.
- 10:59There was the part where, spoiler alert, by the way, I
- 11:02don't know. I don't know where Jesse is like
- 11:05explaining how the girl and that's where the Lachlan song
- 11:08comes on. When somebody.
- 11:11Loves me and which is like one of the greatest songs ever
- 11:13written. And it showed this whole part.
- 11:16And I'm looking at her and she's like, she starts moving because
- 11:19she's uncomfortable. I was like, you're feeling
- 11:21something. She she gets deeply, deeply
- 11:25invested in the sad times. And that's the thing.
- 11:28So to kind of put a point on this K Pop demon hunters.
- 11:32Yeah, I mean, what it what is this movie like?
- 11:35I mean, it's I I don't think that there's anything really
- 11:37like scary. Well, I mean, it can be scary,
- 11:40but like, there's nothing like, Oh my gosh, like that was so
- 11:42deeply impactful. She's not scared of the scary.
- 11:44Part but she's when Rumi starts to lose her voice, she gets so
- 11:49uncomfortable and like she'll leave the couch and at one point
- 11:52she came over to me and was like hi and I was like, hi She's
- 11:54like, So what do you want to talk about?
- 11:56And I was like thought we were watching a movie kid and she's
- 11:57like, I don't know, just wanted to talk during this part.
- 12:00I'm like, is it hard for you to watch Rumi lose her voice?
- 12:03Is that sad for you? And she goes yes, like it's very
- 12:05sad. She has an.
- 12:06Issue with like them, the people she likes losing something and
- 12:09being sad. So you're going to show her Toy
- 12:12Story 3 where the toys are in the incinerator crying to each
- 12:17other, each other about how like, thank God I got to play
- 12:19with you. And like, are we just gonna, can
- 12:22we just gloss over it like. I mean, I'm probably, which I
- 12:25mean, she you don't see Bonnie a lot in four, I don't think.
- 12:28No, you don't. Yeah, but.
- 12:30Like, I don't know. Yeah.
- 12:31Because we grew up with Toy Story, so it made sense for us.
- 12:33We were each of those moments in our lives when Toy Story came
- 12:36along, so we were the ones giving the toys up.
- 12:38So it made us sad. And yeah, I would imagine her
- 12:41seeing it, because I was worried watching too, that she was never
- 12:43going to give any toy of away ever.
- 12:45Because how sad Jesse was that she got given away?
- 12:47Yeah. I was like, oh, Grab, we're
- 12:49going to have to keep everything now.
- 12:51Yeah. And so yeah, maybe we can just
- 12:54skip 3. I don't think 3 is really that
- 12:55valuable. I don't think we need to.
- 12:57There's nothing. There's no new character in
- 12:59Three, right? Well, there's the bad guy in
- 13:01three the fluffy guy. Yeah, no, but like it's OK, we
- 13:03don't see him again. And four, he's not the bad guy.
- 13:06It's the interduction of Forky and then the like Evel Knievel
- 13:09guy. And then five, it's now the
- 13:12technology, it's the tablets, it's the electronic toys that
- 13:15are coming in and how the little, the analog toys don't
- 13:19get played with anymore. Yeah.
- 13:21So I yeah, I can't. Yeah, let's just skip.
- 13:24Three. Let's just skip it.
- 13:25What? Do we care?
- 13:26Comment in wherever you're watching or listening to this.
- 13:28Time like continuity. Watch Toy Story 3.
- 13:32Do we make her deal with them? Because she's got to have
- 13:34emotions. She's deeply emotional.
- 13:37She can't keep her away from all these emotions.
- 13:39I feel like this is her land before time.
- 13:42Maybe we need to land before timer because it'll humble her
- 13:45emotionally which she'll start to.
- 13:47Like she's. Seven, I know.
- 13:48Well, that's when I watched Land Before Time and like all the
- 13:51other movies, that's going. For life, so like, but it it
- 13:54didn't make a positive impact in your life, It's not like it
- 13:57helped you deal with resilience. It just made you really sad.
- 14:00But like why can I don't? Wanna know I can't tell the
- 14:03impact of what land before time did to me.
- 14:04It changed me. And then maybe.
- 14:06And that's why who I am, who I am now, because I was able to go
- 14:09on after Littlefoot said goodbye to his mom.
- 14:11Good. God.
- 14:12Remember Me and then and then the star and the tree star.
- 14:15Maybe that's why I'm sentimental, because I don't
- 14:18know. Have you seen Land Before Time?
- 14:19Yes, but. Like, because there's the tree
- 14:21star where she like, gives him the tree star and then like he
- 14:23eventually finds a tree star and then he like holds onto it for
- 14:26dear life and never let's go because it reminds of a mother.
- 14:28And I'm like, oh, is that what I'm doing?
- 14:30I feel like I'm doing that with a lot of things.
- 14:31I'm holding on to things. I don't, yeah.
- 14:33I mean, you hold onto too many things.
- 14:34There's not that many meaningful things.
- 14:36But everything is a is a star. What?
- 14:39Do I call it the tree *? The tree star.
- 14:41Everything is a tree star to me. All right, go to therapy.
- 14:45No. All right, well, thank you for
- 14:47watching. Oh, wait.
- 14:48Before you go, have I told you about the Clark County trash?
