- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Everyone the Critic.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: The show where a guest picks a movie rated below 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Yanis Cove, a formerly pretentious film school student.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: My guest today is writer and comedian Sophia Bemois.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Hi, thank you so much for having me.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Thanks for being here.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: How are you doing?
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm doing pretty great.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: I was accidentally late, so a little I had to run around a little bit, but I'm doing great.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: How are you doing?
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I'm good now.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm good, thanks.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: It's been a long day today, so I was just like, oh, okay, if he doesn't show up, it's fine.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Either way.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: That's fair enough, fair enough.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Sometimes when people don't show up, you're like, oh, that's kind of a relief.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Now I don't have to do any work and I guess.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: But I'm actually excited to talk about this movie as well.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: I watched it last night and it was very interesting.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Uh we'll get into that.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Fair enough.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: So you picked uh the wedding planner.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: The 2001 movie with starring J-Lo and Matthew McConaughey.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Before the McConnellance, when he was just way before.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: The the original birth, not the rebirth, of Matthew McConaughey.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: So what made you uh so what's your history with the movie actually?
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: So uh growing up I had it on VHS and it was I lived so I have divorced parents and with on my mom's at my mom's house, it was my mom, my sister, and I growing up.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: So it was like an all-girls household, which was fabulous for movie watching because we just watched movies like Wedding Planner a million times.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: We watched like You've Got Mail and Runaway Bride and Wedding Planner, maybe each 800 times.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: Like so I've seen this movie a lot.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: Um, I also love J Lo, like unapologetically love J-Lo.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Um and so I've I just felt like it was a good choice because it had the lowest score of any movie I was considering, and I felt like it needed to be redeemed.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: What were the other ones you were considering?
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: I can't remember.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Like you there were a lot of rom-coms, you said, I think you said.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Princess Diaries 2, A Royal Engagement, which is a fabulous movie.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Um, and it has a Stan Lee cameo.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Um it was produced by Whitney Houston, I think.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: And the first movie was written by Shawn De Rhimes.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, I knew that's the thing I knew about it.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: So that one's like that whole movie is great, but I thought I'd let someone else have it.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: And then the other movie I considered was Made in Manhattan, also a JLo vehicle.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: Uh but I thought Made in Manhattan I have some problems with, and uh I just figured with the low score that uh wedding planner had, it needed the most help.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: So here I am.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Great.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Uh so what's um how many times do you think you've seen it at this point?
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: I've seen it, I would say 20 is probably a conservative estimate.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Maybe 30.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: Like I've seen this movie a lot of times.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: I I almost was like, I don't know if I even need to re-watch this because I think I know every every line of this movie.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: So that's probably true.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Did you watch did you rewatch it anyway?
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: No, I I read about it again because I was like, I don't know that I need to at this point.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: I know I mean like I know her first and last name without looking it up.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: So I'm like, I think I'm I'm pretty good.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: I saw it last night.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Oh no, I do remember her name because I know I remember her first name because it's very relevant to the movie.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: It's yeah.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Um so the the basic premise.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Uh do you want to give the basic premise actually since you've seen it so many times?
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: I would love to.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: Um so J Lo, let's start with JLo's Italian.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: That's the first thing you need to do.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, I had issues with that.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: J Lo is Italian.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: As an Italian American person, uh, what the fuck is happening?
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Um why is she Italian?
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: It doesn't even make any sense because like they could have just made her Puerto Rican or There's no relevance to anything in the movie.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: Nothing, nothing.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Like, and that's also like like it's not like Italians do arranged marriages like as a cultural tradition.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: Like, that's not even a thing.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Um I'm not sure how they landed on that.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: Um, but J Lo's Italian and her dad wants to set her up to get married.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: But she is a wedding planner and is very lonely and uh had her heart broken once.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: And so she's in the middle of planning people's weddings, and she gets like this like a huge account of a wedding, and she's like, This is the thing that's gonna make my career.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: If I can get this wedding, I'll become a partner at the wedding planning firm question mark, I don't know, that I work for.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: The problem is that she's already met the groom of this wedding, and they have had a romantic time because he saves her from a dumpster rolling down.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Almost killing her lies on top of her to save her.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: Look, if J-Lo is in any situation where she's about to die, I will lie on top of her to save her.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: No problem.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: It's just very funny because it's it's the most like I feel like it's the most erotic scene in the movie as well.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's very erotic.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: It is very she like maybe passes out, and then she's like, he smells like sweet plums and grilled cheese sandwiches.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: Which is also like a very specific scent memory.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't know.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of romance in that moment where she's being saved from the dumpster.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Smelling like a grill grilled cheese sandwich is not the nicest smell to have.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: Grilled cheeses are great, but a person smelling like that.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's what I mean.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, I agree, I agree.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: I feel like if you're like, oh, you smell like like fresh baked cookies or something, like that's like, oh, okay, nice.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: But a grilled cheese sandwich is like mostly butter.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you smell like butter and just like old cheese.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: Uh the dumpster also comes back in the movie too, which is nice.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: Does it?
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because then it like is about to hit the guy that has the ice cream cone in the car.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Doesn't it like hit him?
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: I feel like it hits him later.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: Maybe I'm making that part up, but I'm pretty sure the dumpster comes back again.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: Or maybe it's just the guy that hits the dumpster comes back.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Maybe.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's just him.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: But either way, they they try to do some like little plot points.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: They do bring things up that come back again, which is quite nice, but they're not.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: It's a good movie, actually.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: What's um so let's talk about the plot.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Let's go into the plot.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Um so basically, yeah, she's a she's a wedding planner.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: She meets uh Matthew McConaughey, who saves her from uh basically she's getting she gets her foot trapped in a in like a uh a grate and uh he and there's like a dumpster coming like down and it's gonna about to hit her, but she decides instead of taking off the shoe, she decides to try and remove it from the thing still.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: And Matthew McConaughey stops it and jumps in front of the dumpster, pushes her out of the way, and she's safe, and then it starts off this whole thing of he takes her to the hospital and it he's he takes her to like the wrong wing because he's a pediatric doctor.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: But I guess in in this world, if you're a doctor, you're gonna take people to your wing of the hospital even if they're not supposed to be there.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: She's hurt with her big her giant neck, he calls it.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: She hurt her his hand.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: I think it's kind of nice that that he makes fun of her giant neck because he's a pediatrician and she's a full-size adult woman.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: I think that's Oh, is that the reason that you said that?
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: I didn't even pick up that that was the reason.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: He's like he's like, I'm used to having children as patients instead of you.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: But I think it's it's nice to bring JLo down a peg, you know?
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Uh I guess it's nice, but it's also a bit weird.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: That's fair, that's fair.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so there's a lot, there's a lot in this that's about looks, I find I noticed.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Everything about this movie.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Like I because at least when it's starting as well, there's that when she starts with the wedding planning scene in the beginning, um, she's planning that wedding and it's all going well, then like the skinniest woman in the world is like, I'm so fat right now, I can't fit into the dresses and all these things, and it's like, well, and then J-Lo starts going on about oh, he loves you for who you are, and then she starts talking about his looks, her looks still still keep bringing it up.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: Uh she starts talking about the bride's thighs, like I would call for Tracy's thighs, which I think is like a big thing in movies from the early 2000s and late 90s.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: There's so many movies aimed at women that were trying to comment on women's like body insecurities, but instead of doing it in like a subversive way, they would do like this character has bulimia, ha ha ha.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: Isn't that funny?
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: And it was like, that's not the joke.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: The joke is not bad.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: That's not good.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, it's good.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: That's but that's the opening as well.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: And it just made me a bit like, oh, this is what we're gonna expect then.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: A whole movie on women's body issues.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: And then she also, but it's interesting, she has like this whole like pack of things surrounding like ready to go with like sedative, breath mints, uh like a water spray, like the drunk man, drunk uh father of the bride.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: I watch that scene growing up, and every single like you know, when you watch a movie, like a sports film, and the final game is being played, and even though you know what's going on and you know that the team's gonna win, your brain is still like lighting up with every neuron firing, and you're so happy.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: That's how I feel about the opening scene of Wedding Planner, because it's she's just like this competent woman who has like all of her little things in her little side pouch and she has the medicine, she has the like whatever, and she's taking care of it.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: She has a headset on.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: When I was little, like very young, my friend and I would like play wedding planner based on that scene.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: We would have like a little backpack full of stuff.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: Oh, I really thought she was like the coolest woman alive, and she had her career in order.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: I loved it.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: And then at night, she comes home, or maybe it's not that same night, but it seems like that same night.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: She comes home and she like makes a little TV dinner for herself and like vacuums the drapes for some reason.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: And it's very sad.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Okay, but as a kid, I thought it was so cool because it was like this dream of living alone and being a woman.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: And I have talked to other female friends, and all of us were like, when we grew up, we all thought our life was gonna be like chicken in wedding planner.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: Like all of us were like, I thought that's how adulthood was.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: Come home and you do your little chores with your little handkerchief on your head, and you like make a dinner for yourself, and it's not like that at all.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: It's like I'm eating a bowl of cereal alone.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: Like, not the same.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: But what do you think of a what do you think of that scene now, then looking back on it?
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Do you still feel the same way?
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: I I now realize that it's meant to be sad.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: Like they were trying to tell us that she was alone, which is funny because as a kid, literally all my friends and I thought it was so cool.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: Just missing.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: Like we were just yeah, she was like this cool lady alone, and like we thought it was awesome.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think now it still looks kind of relaxing to me because she's got her likes, yeah.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: But I get why they stri what I mean by the sad thing is like she comes home and she has to do all this work still, and then she's uh so she's cleaning, doing all the work, doing all of her going cooking still, and then she has sits down for her TV dinner and she's watching Antique Throw Show.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: That part is sad.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: That part's sad.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: I wish she had better taste in TV.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: I will say that.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: She just turns it on and watches whatever's on CV, and it happens to be antique throat show.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she doesn't change the channel at all.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: She's just like, okay, it's on again.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: I don't know if she knows TVs have different channels.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: She just like assumes that it's only the one.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: It probably was back then as well.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: 2001 was a different time.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Uh then she goes, I thought so originally she goes to the she goes to the place where she plays Scrabble.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: I thought it was an old folks' home.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Then it turns out later it's not, it's just a Scrabble place.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: I don't I assume that well, those two things are probably pretty similar, but yeah.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: Um But I assume that it's like some kind of like like um like community center where they're having a Scrabble club.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: That's what it's seen like.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: It's but it's all old people in it.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Including her dad.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: Also, though, it's hilarious that like if you're an old person and then J Lo walks into your fucking old folks, I would die.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: Sorry, I don't even know if I'm allowed to cuss, but I would die.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: I would keel over dead if a woman as hot as J Lo walked into my old folks' home.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: Like four people have died in that Scrabble Club because of J Lo directly.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: She's gorgeous.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: Especially in this as well.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: Yes, she was like, they a lot of movies with J Lo in them don't know how to deal with how attractive she is.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: So they give her a really ugly haircut or they put her in turtlenecks.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: And they do the same thing to Rachel McAdams in movies all the time where they give her like the ugliest haircut or like this awful turtleneck, and they're just like, we don't know how to make it seem like maybe Rachel McAdams lives next door to you.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: Because that's like an unrealistic thing to happen.
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: And in this movie, they tried, they didn't do that.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: They were just like, We're just gonna let J Lo be as hot as J Lo is.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Like, sorry.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: But that's the other thing.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: They fully embrace JLo in this movie.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: I think they they they toned down Matthew McConaughey.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: Yes, I agree.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: I it's interesting.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: Because Matthew McConaughey in this movie is uh supposed to be a hot doctor, which he is fine at, but he's also like kind of corny looking and like very like blonde tips, which he already is blonde, but they like made him.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: His hair looks very weird in this, it doesn't suit him.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: And the glass the glasses as well, and like just his his whole look is just strange in this.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: Well, they tried to make him a doctor, which is not believable.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, other than that like white people have enough money to send even their stupidest kids to med school, but um, but they really tried.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: It's like when they made Jeremy Renner a um a scientist in the movie Arrival, and it was like, come on, Jeremy Renner's not a physicist.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: I know that.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: You can't put glasses on him.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: No.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: And that's how I felt about Matthew McConaughey in this movie.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: Like he owns like a boxing gym or something.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: Like, be reasonable.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: He's not a he's not a doctor.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Actually, one thing that I just remembered though, interestingly enough, uh you probably already I'm gonna gather you already know this, but uh do you know who was originally supposed to be cast in this?
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: No.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Okay, so there were two other there were two other uh people that were supposed to be cast in both roles.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: So the first one, it was originally gonna be Jennifer Love Hewitt and Brendan Fraser.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: I love Brendan Fraser so much.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: With Jennifer Love Hewitt.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's like a really bad movie.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: That's a bad cast.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: That's a bad couple.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: That is a very bad couple.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Ooh.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: And then they went to uh Freddie Prince Jr.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: and s and Sarah Michelle Geller.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: That makes sense only because they're now married and had worked together before.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: But I have to say I'm huge into what they ended up with.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: Like it's hard to do.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: I think this is the best pairing out of the three of them.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: I do too, I really do.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: Because I think this movie is like so over-the-top ridiculous, and I don't feel like the other characters are over-the-top ridiculous.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: No, except for um Massimo.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, Massimo is hilarious.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Well, also they have um they have Judy Greer playing Penny Nichols, which is a hilarious name.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, I I didn't know that was her name.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: Her name is Penny Nichols.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Penny Nichols, which is like like that's ridiculous.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: That's like naming uh a character like Dollar Bill.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Like, stop it.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, actually, that that's a good point.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: Which so we should get to JLo's name, which is Mary.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: Mary, as in getting married.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's so on the nose.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Also, if sh like, if she's really Italian, it would be Maria, which like a couple people call her sometimes, but then they call her Mary too.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: Which like my uh my grandmother my great grandmother was Maria, and when she came over, she or she like kind of used Mary on like census papers because no one understood what Italians were saying at the time.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: But like she wasn't Mary, like her name was never Mary Mary, like like people misinterpreted that way, maybe, but like I don't understand how in this movie she's both Mary and Maria, like a couple different times.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of Matthew McConaughey has two names in this.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's oh, that is such a good plot point.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: His name's Steve Edison, and then Eddie.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then he goes by Eddie, which is like not a thing anyone does.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: No.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Which is really weird.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Like, wait, which is he goes by Eddie to his fiancee, is that right?
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: Or does she call him Steve?
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: She calls him Oh wait, which one is it?
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: Wait, uh oh, you know what?
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Steve is his name that he goes by with J Lo, and then his fiancee calls him Eddie as a nickname from college, which is kind of I guess more reasonable, but but why would you wouldn't you just call him his full last name?
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: Like I've heard people be called their last name before, but not a nickname of their last name.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: That's like a stretch.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a lot.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: No, it's just like someone calling Michael Jackson like Jack or something.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: Like that didn't happen.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: That's I'm just thinking, especially because she's gonna like marry him later as well.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: Like then she's gotta go by his name?
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: His name, yeah.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: Also, though, like if his first name is Steve, that's already the shortest name, and now you're calling him a name that's literally longer and more syllables than his real name.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: What's happening?
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: It's very strange.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Like, there's there's some really weird things that happen in this movie.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: Like they one, so Massimo is just the strangest character out of all of them.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: I don't know what his deal is.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: I don't know what they're doing with him.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: He's like, he's Italian, but they like also decided to give the character like a traumatic brain injury, which is like it's like bizarre how out of touch he is with reality.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Did they actually mention that, or is that your just what you're thinking?
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: No, that's me.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: That's just me talking about it.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, because I did I was like, when did I miss that?
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: They didn't explain him at all.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: He just it does seem like he's had a brain injury because the nothing he does makes sense.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Nothing he does.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: And I don't know if the if the writers just think Italians are like this, which is fair.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: Like, I think that's a fair critique of of Italians, but in he's just like a genuine weirdo, and then apparently we're supposed to believe that I mean he does have like one nice moment with J Lo where he's talking about his mother her mother and remembering her mother who died, and it's like a nice little moment that they snuck in, and then he like proposes with a cute dollhouse, which I guess is like somewhat nice but somewhat creepy.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: Um but it doesn't make any sense that this man gets to touch JLo, let alone marry her.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: Like, if I saw that man touching JLo in public, I would call like an ambulance.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: I'd be like, is anyone okay?
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: That's not right.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: You are so protective of JLo.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: I I am, first of all, yes.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: But would you want this man touching J Lo?
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: Massimo?
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: He's insane.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: No, no, he's nuts.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: He's yeah, yeah, I don't get what his deal is, I don't get what they're trying to say with him.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: Uh I think the lesson is don't marry Italians.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: I think that's the moral of that story.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: Someone had like an Italian boyfriend that was bad, and then they wrote this movie, and then they were like, I I have things to say.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Um there's there's there's loads of like really dated things in it as well, but which could seem funny now, but like she gets Yahoo magazine, which just seems yes.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: Yahoo! I didn't even know that was a thing.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: I didn't either.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: No, I and like the woman whose wedding she's planning who's gonna marry the guy that she's in love with, Matthew McConaughey, uh, Fran, she's on the cover of Yahoo magazine for like having a frozen food empire, I think.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: And that's also a weird thing.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't think people that have a frozen food empire are on the cover of magazines.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: No, I don't know.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: Is there even a frozen food empire other than like bird's eye or something?
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: Right, like like lean cuisine?
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: Like what?
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: That's a weird plot point too.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: It's like how can we make her very, very rich?
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: Let's let's stick her with a frozen food empire.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: Like, no, it could have just been like, oh, she's in finance and then put her on the cover of Forbes, but no, something's like we need more specificity.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so Jay J Lo wants to be.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: So I wrote down at this at this point, like she wants to be um she's talking very strangely in this.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Her like her whole dialogue around that point early on is very weird and it doesn't seem natural, and she's doing some bad acting, which she's not I've seen her be very good before this as well, so I don't get why it's very it's so stilted at this point.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: I don't I well, I I have questions because I don't think she's a bad actress.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: Like I actually obviously I love JLo.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: Um, but I don't think she's a bad actress as a general rule.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: I think she's generally pretty good, and I think one of the things that she's really good at as an actress is in even the worst movies she's in, she set tends to take it really seriously and she like is fully committed.
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: So I agree with.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: You that there are some weird moments where you're like, why is this moment not connecting for you?
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: And I don't know if it was just like the director was like, we have one take and we gotta go, or like I don't know.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: It was kind of weird because there are better moments later in the film.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think she gets better as it goes on, and I don't know if I just got used to it or if she got better.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: If they filmed maybe they film up late parts in the beginning, she's got tired of it by the end.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: There's also more like emotional moments later, and there's less comedic stuff, but she's like not bad at comedy.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: No.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: She's got a comedy.
- 22:35SPEAKER_02: It just was kind of weird at the beginning.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: It's when she's asking to be made partner.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: It's all that sort of stuff where at that beginning st in those beginning few scenes where it just feels very odd.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: But it feels like a TV movie.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's exactly it.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: Um but she's been working there for like five years and she wants to be made partner.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: Which is already that's a lot to ask for in five years, but yeah, I it's also like one woman's wedding whole, like it's one woman's uh company, and she's just like, make me a partner too.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: Like she didn't start the company.
- 23:13unknown: No.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: I think JLo's asking for a lot.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: You find out she hasn't had a date in two years, which I don't believe.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: It depends on what you c qualify as a date to.
- 23:26SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't know.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: I feel like if J Lo wanted to get a date, she could have gotten a date any day.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: So I don't feel bad for her.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: I'm like, you chose to not date for two years.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, that's when it comes to the whole Matthew McConnell stuff when she gets the shoes stuck and everything.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: Uh she faints.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: And then I wrote down, oh, he's a doctor.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Of course he's a doctor.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: And he is slimy, right?
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: He's being really slimy and creepy right now.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: That's just like the first impression I get from him.
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, he definitely doesn't tell her that he's engaged, which like then, oh, this also cuts to a one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie is for the wedding that she's planning.
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: She's already found out, she well, she just finds out in the scene.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: She finds out that he's the groom of one of the weddings she's set to plan.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: And they go to a dance practice thing, which is like very common.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: My sister had a wedding last year and she had to like learn how to dance for it.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: So that's a real thing.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Um, if a little contrived, but that's fine.
- 24:22SPEAKER_02: Um, all movies are contrived, so that's okay.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: But so they go to dance practice, and then the the bride Fran, who was on the cover of Yahoo magazine and Matthew, the groom, show up, their wedding planner comes.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: That's a little weird, but okay.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: And then Fran has to take a very important frozen food call, and she can't dance, so she's like, Go teach my husband how to dance, or my fiance how to dance, which is like a weird thing.
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: And J Lo knows the guy JLo knows everything.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: She's been doing this forever.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: She knows the guy who like runs the dance studio, Basil St.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: Mosley.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: We'll never forget that man's name.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: Um and I think it's Fred Willard, who just fried.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: Um, one of his best roles, everyone says.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: Um and uh strange goatee in it.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's when he died, I was like, I need to watch Wedding Plan.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: No, I didn't.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Um but they like have a sexy dance together.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: J-Lo, not not Fred Willard and J Lo.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: I wish uh Matt McConnell and and J Lo have like a sexy dance together where they like fight about how they were so horny for each other, but he's engaged.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: I'll say this, I really like that scene, and I think it's like it's like it's the epitome of early 2000s rom coms.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: What is that scene?
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: That's exactly what we always get.
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: And I I love I loved it though.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: No, I agree.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: I think it's one of the best scenes in the movie because it's like it's timed perfectly to the music, and they're like very angry at each other, but it's like horny angry, and you're like, okay, and it really sets up what comes next, which is like they both clearly should be together.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: But Fran is there cock blocking them as the fiance.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: It is a weird rom-com in that like most rom-coms don't ever let you root for somebody who is cheating on their partner, and like Matthew McConaughey is cheating, which is like extremely rare, generally speaking, as like a rom-com rule.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's definitely examples, but you usually hate the other partner if that's the case.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: That's what I mean.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: That's what I was gonna say.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: They don't make you hate Fran.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Like Fran is just a normal person.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: And it's very interesting, like they make you hate uh Matthew McConaughey more than you than you hate Fran.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: And so that's why I think they have to go the route they do at the end of what like when they change everything.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Um I think that's why they'd go there.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: But I've never seen it done that way before or since that I can think of.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so an another plot point that comes up, there's so many, I feel like every single scene of this movie is I will give this movie some credit that they do not waste almost any time in the movie.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: Every single scene has something happening, which is like pretty rare for a rom-com to not waste some time.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: But later in the movie, when JLo and Matthew McConaughey like find out when she finds out he's engaged, yeah, she has been like talking to Fran, his fiance, about meeting this guy and being so excited about this new guy, not knowing that Fran was engaged to this guy.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: So she quickly lies and is like, actually, I'm engaged too, which is the dumbest lie of all time.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: I don't get what that was.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: I don't get it at all.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: It's like they they didn't, which is like a fine plot point if they like m backed it up with some other stuff of like her being competitive or something.
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: But instead, she just like lies and is like, I'm engaged too.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: And this is when Massimo comes back in the picture, the crazy Italian man that her dad wants her to marry.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: He comes back and they're like, This is my fake slash real fiance.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: And then they they have like a weird uh pull-up competition and a weird Yeah, the manly bonding session in the fitness center.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: With Massimo and Matthew Conaghey are just like running on treadmills and fighting, wrestling for some reason.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: It's so bizarre.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: It's weird.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: It's it feels out of place again.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: Um I want to talk about like their song as well in the car like so when they're trying to pick their wedding song in the car.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: Oh yes.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: And they settle on uh they're like every time they they're going through the songs, Matthew McConaughey's like, oh, this is groovy, oh this song's groovy as well.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: Just like, oh look, I bet you're just making those lines up as well.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: That's just I think Matthew McConaughey ad-lived a lot in this movie.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Like, I think like no one has said groovy since 1974, and then Matthew McConaughey was in this movie and was like, I remember the word groovy.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: No, it's ins.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: He's insane.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: Um, also, they don't they settle on um Olivia Newton John, I honestly love you.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Yes, which is a song I've never heard before.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: I have never heard it.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: I I didn't know it when I started watching the movie because I was like six and I was an idiot or whatever, eight.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: I don't know how old I was, but um then I didn't hear it again for years and years until maybe like two summers ago, it was on in a bar somewhere, and I was like, what the fuck?
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: This is a real song.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: Like I I knew it was, but it was also like what?
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: Why are people playing this in a bar as well?
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: That doesn't matter.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: I know I was like, this is a song from Wedding Planner, and everyone around me was like, no one knows what you're talking about.
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: We all don't have any idea what you're saying.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: But it's a bad song.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: Sorry, no offense to it.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: It's not a good song, and it like it's not a good wedding song either.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: No, it's an actually terrible wedding song.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: I wish they had done a better job with that scene.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: Like, I am assuming they just couldn't get good movie rights to songs, but like That's a good point.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: That's probably what it is, because they also had to like scroll through three songs to decide on it, so that's just already like eating up the budget.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: That scene alone is like just half of the budget of the movie.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: I wish they would have spent more time on it because it's I've never heard of any of the songs that they almost pick from.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: I can't really remember the other ones.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Um but then yeah, so then they go to the fet the this wedding place to like look for like locations and everything, and they have that manly bonding session, and then they also then they all get on the horses uh to go on like a yes and and the horse like tears off with J-Lo on it.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: This is a trope of rom-com movies is a woman being on a horse and then a man having to like go ride the horse to like stop her horse.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: And I don't know what that's about because like I defin I love horses because I'm like a white girl, of course I love horses.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: Uh so I can't lie that I like horses, but I don't my fantasy isn't to like be on a wild horse that like runs off and almost kills me.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: That's not my fantasy.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: My fantasy is like I have a nice time on a horseback ride, you know?
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: Like it's a nice calm horseback ride.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 31:22SPEAKER_02: Like why are we including this dynamic in the fantasy that like a man has to like calm my horse down because it almost killed me?
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: I also have like an issue with this that they they get off the horse, like the horse they get he gets her off the horse, the horse just tears off and runs away, and they just leave that horse to run into the nowhere.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: We don't give a shit.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: That's like a$4,000 animal minimum.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: Like, that's like the least you could pay for that horse.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: And they're just like, eh, whatever, they'll sort it out.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: Just goes off into some field.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: Insane.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you find out that um Massimo.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: I wrote I said Massimo is a bad excuse for tension in this scene, and like I don't know why he's there in the first place.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: And when they go back to leave again, like to go back to their homes, you first see the car that goes past, and then you see the giant limo, and as the limo's coming past, I've written Massimo's gonna be on a Vespa.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: I wrote the Vespa's and then he's on a Vespa.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: Somebody who wrote this character knew only about three things about Italians, like three things maximum, and they were like, I know they ride Vespas later in the movie.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: He makes her pasta from a box, which is like kind of offensive to Italians personally.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: Just kidding, it's not, but uh it's they know nothing.
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: They know nothing about this.
- 32:41SPEAKER_02: Um and I also feel like that him being at this wedding venue and like you said, adding weird tension.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: It would have been really good tension if that character were like a fully fleshed out real character that she could have easily fleshed it out, yeah.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: It's gonna have been a childhood love or something that she that comes back.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: Yes, anything like that.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: Yes, and like instead, it's this weird, comically stupid Italian guy, and not stupid in like a oh he just is like having a language barrier.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: Like it's no, actually, yeah, like it's not even them trying to like make fun of any kind of like foreign Italian guy who doesn't get things, like it's like no, this guy fully understands what's happening and is very dumb, which is weird, like a weird choice.
- 33:29SPEAKER_02: Um because she's like a competent business lady who like isn't she has no sense of humor, like nothing is funny to this woman.
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: Um, don't think she laughs the entire time.
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: No, she doesn't at all.
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: The most fun she has is later in the movie when she gets really drunk because she sees an ex of hers, and then she goes and like accidentally calls her neighbor Nancy Pong, and it's great, but that's like the most fun she has.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: Who doesn't love drunk dialing a neighbor?
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: Can't say I've ever done that.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is where we find out though that um that uh they go on about an arranged marriage, and you find out the it's like this weird Italian arranged marriage thing that they want going on with him and him and her, like Massimo and JLo.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: And at that point Fran has to leave for a week to go on her like business trip or something, some reason.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: And so they go and they go like to this like wedding venue and they see all these statues, and they're like very impressed by the statues, but he knocks one over.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, as they pick it up, they realize the penis has fallen off, of course.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: Like in a per the exact perfect position, like where it should fall off.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: They glu she but she goes to her kit, she has it, she has glue in there, she he glues it back on, and he gets it stuck to the penis, his hand stuck to the penis.
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: Yes, and it won't go back on the statue, but instead he has a a nice stone penis in the cup of his hand.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: Which the first time I ever heard of this movie at all, my sister went with her friend, Taylor.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: I remember this so clearly.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: My sister went with her friend to go see this movie in theaters because it was, I think, PG 13, and so she was allowed to see it and I wasn't.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: And she came back and was talking about that scene, the statue scene with the penis, and she was laughing so hard and telling my mom and I like lost it.
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: And I was like, I have to see this hilarious film that is coming to theaters soon or whatever.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: Um, and so as soon as it came out on VHS, I like made my mom buy it.
- 35:35SPEAKER_02: I was like, this is the dick movie, like hoping I would see a dick, I guess.
- 35:39SPEAKER_02: I don't really even know.
- 35:40SPEAKER_02: I just thought it was so funny.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: And it turns out that's not even like a huge plot point, it's just like a very funny aside.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: I shouldn't say very funny, it's just a slightly funny aside.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: It's just a very you see exactly where each point is gonna go.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, you see the statue's gonna fall over, you know that pick that it's gonna fall off because they're talking about it in the first place.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: And then you're like, okay, she's gonna they're gonna glue it on, and the security guard's gonna come over and he's gonna have his hand stuck to it.
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: But I think actually, I think the acting in that scene is better than the acting in a lot of the other scenes because I kind of buy that they're having fun together, and like they seem to be like actually it sets up well the next scenes, which are her and him like actually kind of confronting that they like each other slash love each other, whatever.
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: So I feel like it it does its job, which is they're having a fun time together, and like there is something kind of funny about I guess this is a scene where J Lo laughs actually.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was gonna say I think she might actually laugh in this scene.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: She might actually laugh in this scene, but I think there's something like nice about that because she's so buttoned up the whole time.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then here's this like very like naughty scene, even though that's like a terrible way to put it, but like I feel like she finally like lets go a little bit.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: So I don't know, it's kind of nice.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like it's it's an I think it's a it's a nice scene.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: It's just like one that I could just see where everywhere every point was gunning.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: Yes, but it's not it's not the worst thing in the world to have that.
- 37:09SPEAKER_02: It's a very random, dumb scene, but it solves the problem of the the script, which is they have to have fun together.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: I don't know how they landed on yeah, I don't know how they landed on like someone's dick needs to fall.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: I don't know, that's fine.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: It's like how can we embarrass them both and have fun here?
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Let's do this.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, so then it then it's like the mac and cheese dinner that you were talking about with the Massimo where he makes her the he makes her the mac Mac and he makes her like box mac and cheese.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: For some strange reason, he says he's gonna cook for her and that's what he's gonna cook.
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: I think any Italian that would do that would first of all lose their citizenship and then be beaten to shit by other Italians.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: If you made someone box mac and cheese, I guess that further describes him though.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: It's just like that's that's what he would do.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: I guess I guess it's I guess it fits his character.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: Doesn't he also is this the movie?
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: Maybe I'm mixing this up where he says that he uses two packets of cheese in the box mac and cheese.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: Is it this movie?
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: Maybe I'm thinking of another movie.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: I do remember that from something, but I don't think that's this one, so maybe I've seen that whatever you're talking about as well.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: Because somebody, I feel like somebody said that, and I always remember being like, okay, yeah, but now you have an extra box of noodles.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: But if anyone's gonna do it, it's probably Massimo.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that does make sense for him.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: Um, they go to they go to a f like uh a flower show, I guess.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: I don't know what it is exactly.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: They just go and like look at flowers.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: It's like some flower.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like a flower market.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, flower market.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, something.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: For the wedding.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: For the wedding.
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's for the wedding.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: It has a purpose.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: But he just he grabs one flower and just walks off with it.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: He grabs like a rose and just walks off down, like carrying on the stole a flower.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he does.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: But at that flower market, they meet JLo's ex, uh one-time fiance, who uh he ended up leaving her the night of their wedding rehearsal, big theme in her life.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: Um, the night of her wedding rehearsal, they found she found him making out in the car with the woman he's now married to, and the woman is very pregnant.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: Um and J Lo sees them at a flower market, uh, and she freaks out because she's like he says hi to her, and you think like he would want to be the one hiding, not her.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know why she's embarrassed that someone cheated on her.
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: Like, you didn't do anything wrong.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like you're J Lo, whatever.
- 39:39SPEAKER_02: If you're that hot and someone cheats on you, that's not even real.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: That's a different you're whatever.
- 39:45SPEAKER_02: That's like when people are hot and then they like are sad that they got broken up with or whatever.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: I'm like, you're gonna be just fine.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: You'll be fine.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you don't get a cry during a breakup, move on.
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 39:57SPEAKER_02: That's how I feel.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: You can you can quote me on that.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: I I agree with you as well.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Um like then this is where this is what causes her to get drunk, and this is the what you're saying, it's the most fun scene that uh this most fun you see her having, I guess.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she gets like very depressed and drunk that she saw this guy that they're still to like that she was engaged to her ex-fiance.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:19SPEAKER_02: She's still he's still together with that girl he left her for.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: Uh and that woman's pregnant, and J Lo's like alone making dinners to antique roadshows and being stalked by like an Italian.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: So the only thing I can that also makes me think of is like weddings play such a huge role in her life outside of her job that you would think that she wouldn't want to have that job as well.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 40:45SPEAKER_02: And she talks about how like this woman that like he his the fiance left her for, um planned all her wedding for her, or like planned everything.
- 40:55SPEAKER_02: So it's like, is she like psych like is she like psychologically fixated on this moment and she's built her life around like that woman planned my wedding and now I'm gonna plan everyone else's wedding?
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: Or like what is the like it's like very um it's a little too on the nose, I feel like.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: Like maybe calm down, JLo.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: Because she also, yeah, because this is where you find out about like the the what is it that happens with her mother originally?
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: Like her mom is uh died, but her mom also had a brick fall on her pinky finger and she had no nail on that finger.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: And Massimo talks about that in the cooking scene.
- 41:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, in the cooking scene, Massimo's like, I remember your mom, and she had a her pinky nail missing because a brick fell on it.
- 41:40SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, that's not a thing that happens.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: Like just say she slammed it in a car door or something.
- 41:45SPEAKER_02: Like, what?
- 41:46SPEAKER_02: A brick fell?
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: That is a weird detail to add to it as well.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: But I guess it's like but he seems he also seems more interested in her mom than he seems in her.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 41:56SPEAKER_02: But I also do think there's something like on another level, a kind of real about like when somebody remembers uh your parent and they've died, then you feel a connection to them, even though there's not one, and maybe that's J Lo's connection with Masimo is like, yeah, oh, he remembers my mom.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 42:13SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to give J Lo some credit.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: There's probably that.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: There probably is that.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, the chosen gets drunk, he's and then he's like eating uh while he's stroking her, like he he eats and then he strokes her hair, and he's like always eating in this movie.
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: He's always got something to eat.
- 42:29SPEAKER_02: That's weird.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: He is eating a lot in this movie.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: He also eats only the brown MMs in a that's something early on that I forgot to mention.
- 42:39SPEAKER_00: Is that he yeah, he eats the brown MMs and he like chucks the rest on the floor.
- 42:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he just like gets rid of the rest.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: He's just chucking them in the park, just throwing them on the floor.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: Yes, because he thinks that there's less artificial flavor because chocolate's already brown, which is like I guess okay logic, but it's not like artificial flavoring is that bad for you.
- 42:59SPEAKER_02: Like if you're gonna eat an MM, you've already committed to eating something unhealthy.
- 43:03SPEAKER_02: Like it's not like you're and now you're paying for one eighth of a bag of MMs.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: Like, what are you doing?
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: Just eat something else.
- 43:12SPEAKER_02: If buy a candy bar, buy a Reese's.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: If that's your issue, is artificial flavor, don't buy MMs.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: It's just a weird, uh, it's a very strange um thing to give, like character trait to give him as well.
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: I think somebody took a class that was like, make there be something specific about a character so that you can like know who they are.
- 43:34SPEAKER_02: And for JLo, they were like, she comes home and cleans after work, which is like a good, like she's alone, she makes a dinner, whatever.
- 43:41SPEAKER_02: And then they gave writing Matthew McConaughey's character to like an intern, and they were like, just give us a detail about him.
- 43:47SPEAKER_02: And they were like, What if he only eats brown of banana's?
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: And someone was like, Okay, we don't have any more time, we have to sit we have to shoot this movie.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: It's very looked at their table, like what they what's on the on the writing table.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 44:01SPEAKER_02: It's almost like he loves pencils.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: They were like, no, what else do you need to have?
- 44:04SPEAKER_02: Like, let's go, more ideas.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: It's a bizarre detail.
- 44:08SPEAKER_02: Bizarre detail.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, then then they uh Oh yeah, he struggles he shrugs her hair and he asks her about the night in the park, and this is when he like he he leaves, but he comes back and he tells her like how into her he is and he like says, I want to be with you basically.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: Uh and I can't tell you any I can't tell you your last name, I can't tell you your uh I can't tell you all these things, but I can tell you about the curves on your face.
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a really weird speech.
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: It's a very uncomfortable speech.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: It's like something about like if you ever had braces and your middle name and there's some like there's Oh middle name, not certain it's like it's there's weird shit in that speech where he's like, I I can't tell you all the stuff, but I know the curves of your face, and then he's like, and I know I like love you or whatever.
- 44:52SPEAKER_02: Which like is so inappropriate.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: If you give that speech to somebody and then spoiler it for everyone, but if you give that speech to someone and then you turn around and keep marrying your fiance, that's fucked up.
- 45:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: That's really fucked up.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's not a good that's what I mean, is like he's not a good person in this.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: Nope, he's not.
- 45:13SPEAKER_02: He's not, he's not a good person.
- 45:16SPEAKER_00: So, but she she turns him down and she said, I'm s I'm uh I'm I'm a magnet for unavailable men, and I'm sick of it, and I just I don't want to be part of that.
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: I don't want that anymore.
- 45:26SPEAKER_00: What's a good line?
- 45:28SPEAKER_02: It may what's weird though is that like I I don't know where the other unavailable men are in her life, because we haven't met any other unavailable men.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: Like her fiance was available, he just cheated on her.
- 45:41SPEAKER_02: I guess that's true.
- 45:42SPEAKER_02: And then like we don't know of any other unavailable men.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: So I'm not really sure what this refers to, but good for her.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: I like the lion, but yeah, I guess now looking back it doesn't really make sense.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: But she turns him down and she um and then Fran shows up at her office and you think, oh, she's gonna fight, she's gonna say, Oh, I found found out what happened and everything, but no, she um she just turns out that she actually realizes that she she just hates Eddie.
- 46:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she and the weirdest part is JLo isn't I mean, I'm I'm assuming they're trying to do this to like make JLo a good person, but instead of being like, hey, those are some valid concerns, maybe you should put off the wedding, or like, yeah, I think your fiance is also questioning this.
- 46:25SPEAKER_02: J Lo instead is like, no, you need to go forward with this wedding to the guy who just professed his love to me that I clearly love.
- 46:33SPEAKER_02: Like, it's all kinds of unethical, I feel like.
- 46:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and like just be a little selfish and be like, yeah, your wedding's fucked.
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: Like, come on, don't love him, don't get married to him.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, instead like don't encourage that.
- 46:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, instead, J Lo's like, no, you have to do this.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: It seems almost spiteful, but like just out of anger to him.
- 46:56SPEAKER_02: It should also be noted that the partnership that she is waiting on for the wedding planner partnership hinges on her boss has made a condition.
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: That's probably what it is.
- 47:06SPEAKER_02: So, well, if she can get this wedding off the ground, she can become a partner.
- 47:11SPEAKER_02: Like if it goes well.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's what it is.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: That's what it is.
- 47:14SPEAKER_02: I guess, but that's even still like a weird worse.
- 47:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's weird.
- 47:18SPEAKER_02: Like, either way, it's kind of a selfish choice.
- 47:20SPEAKER_02: Either you pick your career or you pick Matthew McConaughey.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:24SPEAKER_02: The classic choice all women have career or Matthew McConaughey.
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: Pick your careers, don't go.
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: Especially not from here.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, you this is when Math uh Massimo brings out the dollhouse for her, and he has a rig inside, he proposes to her at the security guard's birthday celebration.
- 47:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like her dad's friend's birthday, and then he totally steals the moment.
- 47:54SPEAKER_02: And this guy was like 70 or something.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: Like, have a birthday.
- 47:59SPEAKER_02: Instead, Masimo's like, absolutely not.
- 48:02SPEAKER_02: I'm making this about me, and he proposes to J-Lo, and she, because they like kind of met through this Scrabble clubbish kind of connection, she like writes her answer out on the Scrabble board, and instead of writing yes, she writes okay.
- 48:15SPEAKER_02: Okay, which is like the most tepid answer.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: Fine.
- 48:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 48:20SPEAKER_02: I guess sure.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: I kind of wish she wrote like yeah, sure instead.
- 48:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, whatever.
- 48:28SPEAKER_02: Like it takes like five minutes to find all the letters.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so then we get the the two wedding montages going on at the same time, like the two prepar preparations.
- 48:37SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, because she has her wedding to Massimo on the same day as uh um Fran and and uh Steve Edison, our friend Matthew McConaughey's wedding, same day.
- 48:49SPEAKER_02: And this means it's gonna cost her, she like gives her wedding planning duties over to her assistant, Judy Greer, and is like, you take this over, you're the lead now.
- 48:59SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, wait, you just gave up Matthew McConaughey's dick for your career, and now you're giving up your career for Massimo?
- 49:07SPEAKER_00: Like makes no sense.
- 49:08SPEAKER_02: Makes sense.
- 49:09SPEAKER_00: It's also like just just get married another day.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: Just do it another day, yeah.
- 49:13SPEAKER_00: You're also it's also like they're getting married at a like a registry office, it's not even a like a proper like place that they planned out and they could do it anytime.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: I actually have questions about that because normally a city hall only lets you get married like a few days of the week.
- 49:27SPEAKER_02: They don't usually have weddings open all the time.
- 49:29SPEAKER_02: And usually like it's very common for it to be like, oh, on a Wednesday you can come get married.
- 49:34SPEAKER_02: But like, how can they be getting married on the same day that like Fran and Matt McConaughey are getting married, which is like definitely a Saturday, because that's they're rich people.
- 49:42SPEAKER_02: So is this city hall open on Saturdays?
- 49:45SPEAKER_02: What city hall is this?
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: I have questions.
- 49:48SPEAKER_00: So many plot points there.
- 49:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so many plot holes there's a big, big plot hole.
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: But they uh yeah, so you see two weddings, one's really extravagant, and you uh uh which is the the Fran and Eddie one, and then the other one is just like the them getting married in in City Hall or whatever that is.
- 50:07SPEAKER_00: Um and yeah, Judy Greer's got the has taken over now for that wedding.
- 50:13SPEAKER_00: She's planning it all, and right before that they talk to each other, Fran and Eddie, and they decide to not go through with the wedding.
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: Right before it's about to happen.
- 50:25SPEAKER_02: Right before it's about to happen.
- 50:26SPEAKER_02: The worst timing.
- 50:28SPEAKER_02: I guess the second worst, because it could be right after it just happened.
- 50:32SPEAKER_00: It could be at the altar, like at least it wasn't at the altar.
- 50:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 50:36SPEAKER_02: And he like sends her off on their honeymoon to Tahiti, which is like kind of nice of him, I guess.
- 50:42SPEAKER_00: In the world's worst-looking taxi.
- 50:45SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 50:46SPEAKER_02: They're both rich and they're both hot, so I again I'm not saying both gonna be fine.
- 50:50SPEAKER_02: She's gonna get banged on their fucking honeymoon and Tahiti.
- 50:54SPEAKER_02: She is gonna sleep with like minimum five guys.
- 50:57SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, minimum.
- 50:58SPEAKER_02: They talk about how she was like a wild child in college who ran like a bookie ring, and like she's like the daughter of uh very rich people.
- 51:05SPEAKER_02: She's gonna be fine.
- 51:06SPEAKER_02: I have no worries for Fran.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: So they they end that and then he finds out from Judy Greer that uh J Lo is getting married to Massimo right at this moment, so he gets he gets in a taxi and like drives off down there, and then he uh he obviously gets stuck in a traffic jam because what else would happen?
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: And he takes over.
- 51:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, this could be no, it's not the same, it is the same guy that's the driving the taxi, isn't it?
- 51:36SPEAKER_02: This is the taxi driver who hit the dumpster.
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: That's why he's got the neck brace.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he has the neck brace now.
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: Yes, that's what it is.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: The dumpster kind of comes back in a little bit of a way that the taxi driver's the same guy who almost killed J-Lo.
- 51:49SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: So they uh they he get uh Matthew McConnell takes over and like somehow weaves in and out of the traffic and makes it there.
- 51:58SPEAKER_02: That is an insane plot point.
- 52:01SPEAKER_02: That's another hole in this movie, I'll say it.
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: Like, we can't get anywhere because of this traffic jab.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: Oh no, you're wrong, I can do it.
- 52:08SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 52:08SPEAKER_02: Like, that's the most white man thing in the entire world to be like, let me have a seat.
- 52:13SPEAKER_02: Like, let me take a whack at it.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: Like, shut up, Matt McCone.
- 52:17SPEAKER_02: Also, like you're driving to a wedding of someone you love, chill like you're already too late.
- 52:22SPEAKER_02: Like, shut up.
- 52:22SPEAKER_02: Come on, man.
- 52:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: I'm surprised he didn't run to the like run the whole disc like jump out of the taxi and run the whole way there.
- 52:29SPEAKER_02: Well, he gets there, and it turns out that J Lo was gonna go through with the wedding, but all of J Lo, like her dad, who's been pushing the wedding, and uh her dad's friend whose birthday was upstaged, who's been pushing the wedding.
- 52:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, like all of these people in J Lo's life who've been like, you need to get married to Mossimo, you need to get married to Mossimo, you need to get married to Mosomo.
- 52:48SPEAKER_02: They all are like, I object, which isn't even a real wedding thing.
- 52:52SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't even think that's a part of a wedding anymore.
- 52:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I haven't heard that in a long time.
- 52:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I've never, I've been to like a few weddings this last couple years.
- 53:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, me too.
- 53:00SPEAKER_02: No one was like, hey, do you guys object or what?
- 53:04SPEAKER_02: Please vote, show of hands, who objects and who doesn't.
- 53:07SPEAKER_00: Um, so everyone objects all of every one of them objects.
- 53:10SPEAKER_02: All of them, all of them, which is like maybe the first time in wedding history that every single mem person, every single witness was like, no.
- 53:17SPEAKER_00: And then it turns out even Matamo objects at one point.
- 53:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, everyone was like, JLo, you shouldn't go through with this, which was very obvious.
- 53:24SPEAKER_02: And actually, that was JLo's point earlier in the movie.
- 53:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, if only they listened to her.
- 53:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and so now J Lo's like, wait, you guys, come on.
- 53:33SPEAKER_02: I finally agreed to marry this insane Italian man.
- 53:37SPEAKER_02: Uh what is the deal?
- 53:39SPEAKER_02: And they're all like, you're not in love with him, which she wasn't ever in love with him.
- 53:43SPEAKER_00: Like that's what I've been saying.
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's like, no, I told you that.
- 53:46SPEAKER_02: You know that because of me and my information.
- 53:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then and then so the wedding doesn't happen.
- 53:53SPEAKER_02: And she goes, you find out in a minute, but she goes, like, she runs off, and Matthew McConaughey arrives when everyone is like, yeah, except for JLo.
- 54:01SPEAKER_00: On Massimo's Vespa with Massimo.
- 54:03SPEAKER_02: Wait, well, Matthew Conhe gets to the city hall.
- 54:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 54:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, everyone's waiting around because the wedding has been cancelled.
- 54:10SPEAKER_02: Massimo's still there, and he's and he's like, Wait, what happened?
- 54:16SPEAKER_02: And Massimo's like, Stive, which is the worst accent in the entire world, but he's like, Steve, she loves you, and it's like, what is this accent?
- 54:24SPEAKER_02: That's not even Italian.
- 54:25SPEAKER_02: Um, and so the two of them get on his on Massimo's Vespa, and then Massimo wears his normal helmet, and Matthew McConaughey wears the helmet that Jayla was supposed to wear as the bride that has like a little veil on it.
- 54:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and the back of the Vespa says just married, and the two men ride through San Francisco, and everyone is so happy for them, which I remember being such a huge deal because in 2001 everyone hated gay people, right?
- 54:52SPEAKER_02: And this was like one of the first rom-cons to have any kind of nod towards straight men being comfortable riding around on like a Vespa together in love.
- 55:00SPEAKER_02: Um and I wish the movie would have ended there with Massimo and Steve falling in love.
- 55:06SPEAKER_02: I think that would have been a beautiful ending that would have redeemed the whole movie.
- 55:10SPEAKER_02: But instead they go to the park where J Lo is because she left her wedding and went to a movie.
- 55:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, went to immediately to a movie theater.
- 55:18SPEAKER_02: She like looked up show times and she said, you gotta go.
- 55:22SPEAKER_00: No, she knows that she knows all about that because she always goes there.
- 55:24SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm saying.
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's true, that's true.
- 55:27SPEAKER_02: But like if you if you like cancel your wedding because everyone in your family pressured you into it.
- 55:33SPEAKER_00: I'm going home.
- 55:34SPEAKER_02: And then yeah, and then was like, I object.
- 55:36SPEAKER_02: I would go straight home.
- 55:38SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm not like, well, I guess I'll go to the park.
- 55:41SPEAKER_02: Like what?
- 55:43SPEAKER_02: It was weird.
- 55:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they uh so and yeah, they go to the park.
- 55:47SPEAKER_00: She's eating the brown Eminem's now.
- 55:49SPEAKER_00: She's chucking the rest of them away, and then they dance uh they get up, they dance, they kiss, and that's the end of the movie.
- 55:59SPEAKER_02: They probably broke up in like a month.
- 56:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that didn't last.
- 56:02SPEAKER_00: There's no way they lasted.
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: And then a jail, and then uh Love Don't Cost a Thing plays over the credits.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, I totally forgot that, but you're right.
- 56:11SPEAKER_02: I that's also great because there's no plot point in the entire movie about wealth.
- 56:17SPEAKER_02: Like nothing about the movie is about her being poor or him being rich or him being rich.
- 56:21SPEAKER_00: And the song doesn't fit the movie.
- 56:23SPEAKER_00: No, like the style of the song does not fit the movie.
- 56:26SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm sure in her contract, she was like, you need to put at least one J-Lo song in there.
- 56:31SPEAKER_02: But but this movie is the first time in history where a um anyone has ever had a number one album and number one movie at the same time.
- 56:41SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: J-Lo had the first impressive.
- 56:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I think they think the I think it's number one album, it may be number one song, but I think it was like Love Don't Cost a Thing and this movie were both number one the same thing.
- 56:52SPEAKER_02: And it's the only time that's ever happened.
- 56:54SPEAKER_02: Good for her.
- 56:55unknown: Do you know?
- 56:57SPEAKER_00: Do you know I yeah, I'm I don't love all of her stuff, but yeah, great.
- 57:04SPEAKER_02: I think she's perfect, she's flawless, she's never done anything wrong.
- 57:07SPEAKER_02: Uh I think she's uh so busy and does so many projects that like you're gonna like something J-Lo does.
- 57:16SPEAKER_02: You know, like I think that's a great philosophy of like if I just do enough stuff, you'll you'll consume some of my art.
- 57:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:24SPEAKER_00: I love some of her movies.
- 57:25SPEAKER_00: I love out of sight, I love Hustlers.
- 57:27SPEAKER_00: Um Anaconda's fun.
- 57:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:31SPEAKER_02: She has like good movies as well.
- 57:33SPEAKER_02: Um Selena obviously is phenomenal.
- 57:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: Um and she was like, I mean, she's such a good dancer too.
- 57:40SPEAKER_02: Like she's I mean, obviously, it was starting with the Fly Girls, and then um I watched the TV show World of Dance with her, which is like a very wholesome competition show.
- 57:50SPEAKER_02: It's like a little similar to in tone to like um the Great British Bake Off, where it's like very it's like a dance competition show, but nobody's mean, like none of the judges are like rude to anyone.
- 58:03SPEAKER_02: They're all these like it's all these like it's like kids and adults, but it's like it will be someone who's like, I was adopted and I have never fit in, and I like and then it will be another person who's like I have strokes really bad and I have epilepsy, but they're like the best dancers in the world, and it's so good.
- 58:21SPEAKER_02: I love it, and J Lo's great, and that's what she's up to now.
- 58:24SPEAKER_02: So everyone watch World of Dance.
- 58:27SPEAKER_00: I thought this was an old show you were talking about.
- 58:29SPEAKER_02: No, this is it's like on its fourth season.
- 58:32SPEAKER_02: I don't know how I started watching it.
- 58:33SPEAKER_00: I just I thought this was a show like pre-Her career.
- 58:35SPEAKER_02: No, no, I wish.
- 58:36SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, I wish she's a judge.
- 58:38SPEAKER_02: Uh oh, right.
- 58:40SPEAKER_02: Neo is a judge, uh yeah, Derek Huff uh from Dancing with the Stars is a judge.
- 58:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and they're like very fun together.
- 58:48SPEAKER_02: And uh I only started watching it because I was like uh it was like on Hulu or something, and I was like, oh okay, I'm doing nothing.
- 58:56SPEAKER_02: And I was like doing laundry one day.
- 58:58SPEAKER_02: It was basically like I was living J-Lo's life at the beginning of this movie, except for my TV turned to to World of Dance and her TV turned to Antiques Roadshow.
- 59:07SPEAKER_02: Uh so that's a full circle ending for you is that I was living like a sad adult life watching J-Lo.
- 59:15SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about like what you think makes it a good movie then.
- 59:19SPEAKER_02: Okay, well, I think what makes it a good movie, um I think I think it's very difficult to make a good rom com that's modern because there's not very many reasons why two adults who want to be together wouldn't be together, which is like what you need for a rom-com.
- 59:36SPEAKER_02: And I think people underestimate how hard it is to write a modern rom com that has any tension.
- 59:42SPEAKER_02: Because again, like if two people like each other, then date, you know?
- 59:46SPEAKER_02: Um, so I think this is actually a really well done version of uh like the original conceit of it is like you're planning a wedding for the guy that you love.
- 59:55SPEAKER_02: I think that's like a very good tension-filled conceit.
- 59:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:59SPEAKER_02: Uh, I also think that there's a lot of very funny, like comedic over-the-top moments, and they match that tone pretty consistently throughout.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_02: Like I think that they don't ever like the movie goes definitely goes back and forth between like very dramatic, like love moments and very comedic ridiculous moments, but I think that they're like very committed to ridiculousness, and and I think they're aware of what movie they're making, which I think is so valuable for a rom-com to be aware that like you're making a shitty rom-com, make a shitty rom com.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they have fun with it.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_00: They're enjoying themselves.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_02: I think also one thing that I really like about this movie is that it's um it's clearly made for like people who love rom coms, and specifically, I think it's really aimed at women, but obviously that's like a there's more audience than that.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_02: But um, but they like play on things that women really love, and they don't get everything right, but they have like a lot of like horses is a thing that women love.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_02: Wedding planning is a thing women love.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_00: Like they like it does feel like they they kind of like said, how many things can I throw in though?
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's fair.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_02: That's very fair.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_02: Like when they got to the point where they were like, I think women love Italians, let's put it someone here.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_02: That was like a little far.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_00: They love dumb Italian men.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_02: Exactly, which we do, but they didn't do a great job of it.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_02: Um so they definitely like messed up some things.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't think this is a perfect film.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure that it deserves an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes or anything.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_02: But um, but I do think it was very aware of what it was, what it was making, and like who the audience was.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_02: And I think that's like a very valuable thing.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_02: So that's my defense of the and J-Lo's in it.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_00: So Yeah, I can't I can't really argue with what you said there, to be honest.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_00: I guess I just don't I just didn't connect with it, I don't think.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_00: Um it's at s fair.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_00: It's it's um it's at 17% though.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_00: I think that's too low.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_00: Oh 16%, sorry.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_00: 16, which is very, very low.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_02: That was the lowest movie I found, because I looked up a bunch of stuff and it was the lowest I found, and I thought that it I don't think it's that bad.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_02: I don't think it's good.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_02: But I don't think it's I feel like the emoji movie got like 16%.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_02: Like, come on.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna look up what the emoji movie got because I'm now I'm fighting for the rights of JLo.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_00: While you do that, I'll read off some of the bad reviews then.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm right.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_00: Um so one review from from Entertainment Weekly said it suffers particularly in inevitable comparison with my best friend's wedding.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_00: But I don't think that's a comparable movie.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_00: I don't think they're similar.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're similar at all, because my best friend's wedding is like incredibly well written and like meant to be a diff like the people that wrote those two movies did not think they were writing the same movie.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_02: No, not at all.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_02: At all.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_00: This is this is so much lighter than that as well.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because My Best Friend's Wedding is in My Best Friend's Wedding is a tragedy and written as a tragedy, and like this is written as like the dumbest rom-com.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_00: Like I think they just like said, okay, what's another wedding movie we can compare it to?
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_00: Alis that that one came out sort of recently enough that we can compare it to that.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_00: Because this is that's a review from 2001 as well.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_00: Um they said that uh Village Voice said Matthew McConaughey is insufferably smug as always, while the bewildering miscast diva appears born and impatient.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_02: I don't even think that that's either of those things is true.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_02: Like, I think you can criticize both of them for their roles.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_02: Like, I again I I I think that's there's fair criticism, but I don't I think Matthew McConaughey seems very stupid, and I don't know that he knows he's in a movie in this movie.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm not sure he knows he's acting.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_00: Just going around by the day by day seeing what's going on.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and JLo seems like she's like too into it, if anything, like she doesn't relax in the movie.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_02: I don't think she seems bored.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_02: I think she seems like not at all intense.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess that's where the impatient uh feeling comes from for that for her, but I d but yeah, I wouldn't say bored.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_00: She doesn't seem bored.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_02: She I don't know.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_02: I I won't I won't buy it.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_00: Uh all the good reviews.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to find one of the good ones, but it's all like not available, not available.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_02: They've been like taken down.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_00: They have.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, so that's just that's the movie.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_00: It's like they I don't think people got it or what it was going for around the time.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_00: And I don't know if that's just because it was trying something a little bit different to what the rom-coms were around then.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_02: I think also, again, like I think rom coms as a genre are generally looked down upon, which is like like I think, I mean, I'm a huge defender of rom-coms because I love them, and I think that there are very, very good ones.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_02: And I don't think this movie, again, I don't want to be like, this movie's as good as when Harry Mentale.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_02: It's not, it's like a shitty movie.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_02: But I also think that like if you you if you can enjoy like the fourth installment in the Bourne Ultimatum series, yeah, you can enjoy like come on.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_02: Like it's the same idea, it's just like very enjoyable scenes that have like very little real world consequence, you know?
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_02: Like it's not it's not trying to be like a documentary.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_00: You gotta you kind of gotta look at it uh for what it is, not for not in the context of every movie that comes out.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_02: I think that's like a thing that critics do very poorly in general, is that like I mean, there's like every movie isn't trying to be an Oscar-winning movie.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_02: No one wrote this movie or acted in this movie thinking like this is so good.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_02: They were like, This is enjoyable, and someday someday Sophia's gonna watch it and like be on an exercise bike while she does it.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_02: Like, it's not like it's changing my life.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_00: They made it just for you.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_02: They really did, they really did.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_02: It hits all the spots of my brain that I love.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_02: Okay, so let's emoji movie got seven percent so it's only a little bit bigger than emoji movie.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_00: That's bad.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_00: I forgot you looked that up.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_02: No, I I I wanted to defend it and I do think it's more than twice as good as the emoji movie.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen emoji movie but I can imagine it is twice as good as more than twice as good as that.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_02: It has to be come on the emoji movie looks awful.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_00: Oh have you not seen it either?
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_02: No I haven't I just knew a lot of really bad reviews and I was like I don't I I mean I think Made of Manhattan got like 30% or something.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_02: And so I feel like this is as good as that movie and and she has better chemistry with the lead than in in the reason I didn't pick Maiden Manhattan.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah Ray Fines That's a strange that's a miscasting it was so miscast if they did a shot for shot remake of that movie and just replaced Ray Fines with like anyone like it could be Danny DeVito.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_02: She would have better chemistry like oh you gotta make get someone to make that now Ray Fines replace Ray Fines with Danny DeVito I'm working on that I promise um okay so speaking of like bad movies though I guess like um can you tell me a good movie one that's reviewed well that you consider to be bad one that's well loved oh I have a lot of these but um I think one of while I hated Arrival like spe I I brought it up earlier so it's probably on my brain um but I really hated Arrival I thought that movie was just truly a terrible movie stuff top to bottom I thought um I I think the the twist is kind of interesting in that movie I don't want to spoil anything for anyone since it's like a good movie that people want to watch but um I don't like the entire movie happens where uh Amy Adams is the lead and then the big discovery of the movie comes from Jeremy Renner which makes no sense.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_02: Like I think that's all movie writing techniques would tell you like you're not supposed to have another character have the climactic moment that like breaks the code.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_02: And then it turns into a movie about like the ethics of fucking and like the ethics of like having kids if you think you might die or something.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_02: And it's like first of all just don't have kids with Jeremy Renner ever.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_02: I think that's oh yeah please don't yeah like that's like a mistake already um I don't know there's on top of the fact that like no one believes Jeremy Renner is a scientist I couldn't get over that.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_02: I just was like that's like putting Channing Tatum in a movie and being like he's a scientist folks like no Jeremy Renner is the least believable scientist of anyone that I've seen.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_02: You could honestly put almost any other actor in Hollywood into that role and I would have bought it with Matthew McConnell in there.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_02: I would have bought that Massimo put Massimo in there that would be put Massimo that I would love it if if they remade a rival but with like a very unintelligent Italian man like solving equations.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_02: So I have discovered it yeah exactly I have discovered it um his Italian accent is so bad because all he's not Italian just as no he clearly he's clearly not Italian also I he's from Grey's Anatomy and I think he has like six or nine kids he has like an ass load of kids in real life like an ass yeah that's the most Italian thing about him is he has like I don't know uh I don't know but yeah Arrival that's the movie that I was like oh I cannot get on board with this great all right so this has been very enlightening uh thank you so much I'm so sorry again that I was late but I'm totally fine here now and and I had fun with podcasts wait great so uh so how can we find you uh do you have any plugs that you want to keep yeah so I um I have a Twitter account that you can find me at all the time um and it's at one follower no dad it's the number one and then follower no dad and then I'm sorry for the account right now I'm kind of offline and just there's too much going on in the world so I am not really posting right now.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_02: And the same is true I have a newsletter called Here's the thing where I give out advice.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_02: Right now again that's kind of off the table for a little while but um I'm also teaching some summer workshops on writing um and you can find those all on my Twitter.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_02: So thanks when are those uh didn't are those uh like all outcoming soon or yeah so there's uh one July 13th one July 30th and then one August 10th and they're on a couple different topics but again that's all all listed online.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_00: Great thanks so much for doing this thank you I'm so excited this was great that's the end of the podcast you can find me on Twitter with the username at YCove or at YannisCove on Instagram.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_00: Please remember to rate and review us on iTunes if you enjoyed this so I can end up making more and I'll see you next week for more movies that critics got wrong.
