- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, everybody? Welcome back to another episode of Bucco Territory,
- 0:12Speaker 1: presented to you by the Foul Territory Network. My name
- 0:15Speaker 1: is Noahile's joining me as always are my co host
- 0:17Speaker 1: Josh Harrison and Mark aka Platinum Key. We're coming to
- 0:23Speaker 1: you on a Friday, which means we are less than
- 0:25Speaker 1: one week away from opening Day from Major League Baseball,
- 0:29Speaker 1: from real baseball.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Guys.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I don't know about you, but I'm tired of watching
- 0:34Speaker 1: baseball with palm trees in the background. I need some
- 0:37Speaker 1: bad weather baseball. That's what I want.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Give me a snow game.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Come on, Yes, I want snow. I want I want
- 0:44Speaker 1: guys hitting a ball and I look into their eyes
- 0:46Speaker 1: and I see the pain in their hands. I want
- 0:49Speaker 1: pictures looking unpleasant. I want all of it. That's what
- 0:53Speaker 1: I want. That's what Mark.
- 0:56Speaker 4: Yeah, so you hitting with the clear frame because you
- 1:00Speaker 4: got snow flourished trying to hit your eyes and stuff,
- 1:02Speaker 4: and it's windy. But now I'm not gonna lie. I
- 1:06Speaker 4: actually didn't mind playning those those days because.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Nobody wants to play in it.
- 1:10Speaker 4: So it's just like you know what, but like you say,
- 1:13Speaker 4: let's you know, it's just a different scene from being
- 1:15Speaker 4: you know, palm trees or you know, being out in
- 1:18Speaker 4: Arizona hot skies.
- 1:20Speaker 2: It's just one of.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Those things where the weather may suck, but it's also
- 1:22Speaker 4: the exciting thing where you know, these games, these games
- 1:25Speaker 4: mean something.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:27Speaker 1: It also helps that you were born and raised in
- 1:29Speaker 1: Cincinnati and you played March baseball in that weather your
- 1:33Speaker 1: whole life. You know.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Yeah, they say, you know, you get used to it,
- 1:37Speaker 4: and I was like, no, I don't think you get
- 1:38Speaker 4: used to it.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I just know how to.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Prepare, you know, double head up, vast, leaning up under.
- 1:43Speaker 4: So I was good to go, all right.
- 1:46Speaker 1: So the big thing for today as this show airs
- 1:49Speaker 1: on Friday in March twentieth, is the Spring Breakout Game.
- 1:53Speaker 1: The Pirates have a pretty notable roster for this year's
- 1:57Speaker 1: Spring Breakout Game. They just published it as we're recording
- 2:01Speaker 1: this Thursday morning. You look at some of the names
- 2:03Speaker 1: on here. Obviously you see Connor Griffin, Tamar Johnson on there.
- 2:08Speaker 1: SETH Hernandez is the big name I think that everyone's
- 2:11Speaker 1: excited to see in this game, just because we've been
- 2:13Speaker 1: seeing Connor Griffin all spring. We saw a lot of
- 2:16Speaker 1: Tamar Johnson this spring. But this is really the first
- 2:20Speaker 1: look at Seth Hernandez that most Pirate fans are gonna
- 2:24Speaker 1: get because he's only nineteen years old. He wasn't in
- 2:27Speaker 1: big league camp this year. He didn't play much at all,
- 2:32Speaker 1: I don't.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Think last yeah.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yeah, So I mean this is a chance for Pirate
- 2:38Speaker 1: fans to see this guy who's a top ten pick,
- 2:41Speaker 1: nineteen years old and could potentially be you know, their
- 2:45Speaker 1: next ace, like the next wave of aces. Mark, We'll
- 2:49Speaker 1: start with you. Aside from the obvious names, I mean,
- 2:51Speaker 1: here's another guy when you look at this list that
- 2:53Speaker 1: you're excited to see as Valdez.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I love the magician, excited to see him. We saw
- 2:59Speaker 3: him open in spring training this year. Another one is
- 3:03Speaker 3: like Tamar Johnson's another big name. But one of the
- 3:06Speaker 3: guys that I have a lot of fun watching is
- 3:09Speaker 3: Tony Blanco Junior. Just insane, insane power if you can
- 3:14Speaker 3: the raw powers there, So we'll see if you can
- 3:17Speaker 3: do that in the games. Also, your Donnie de los
- 3:19Speaker 3: Santos has had a fantastic spring. A young I think
- 3:25Speaker 3: he's like nineteen year old shortstop, so he's been putting
- 3:30Speaker 3: up some real big numbers checking in at the end
- 3:32Speaker 3: of the spring training games. And then also Christian Christian Kurz.
- 3:37Speaker 3: I like Christian curves, but Brandon Budos his stuff is nasty.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Yet there's a lot of people hoping that he might
- 3:44Speaker 3: end up in the bullpen at some point this year
- 3:46Speaker 3: for the MLB team. So a couple of names there,
- 3:49Speaker 3: but yeah, Seth Hernandez is going to be the headliner
- 3:53Speaker 3: for me.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm to add two quick names. And then I
- 3:57Speaker 1: got a questioned for Josh Levi. Sterling is a guy
- 4:00Speaker 1: that I've heard a lot of really good stuff about.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I believe he was a first round pick in twenty four.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I think he was in the I want to say
- 4:08Speaker 1: he was in the Griffin draft class.
- 4:11Speaker 2: That sounds right.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah, he was one of their supplementary round picks. And
- 4:16Speaker 1: then the other one is Calan Moss, who absolutely tore
- 4:21Speaker 1: the cover off the baseball. He was part of the
- 4:23Speaker 1: Bailey Falter trade return, an undrafted guy played I believe
- 4:28Speaker 1: D two baseball, so he's very much under the radar.
- 4:32Speaker 1: People were kind of pissed when they saw that he
- 4:34Speaker 1: was part of the trade return for Bailey Falter. They
- 4:36Speaker 1: were like, who the hell is this guy? But he
- 4:39Speaker 1: was probably their best hitter post trade deadline in High
- 4:43Speaker 1: A last year. He'll probably play. I would think we
- 4:47Speaker 1: see him in Double A this year. He's a first baseman.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I don't know what his ceiling is, but like I
- 4:53Speaker 1: could see him if he continues to hit well, being
- 4:56Speaker 1: like another esmerln Valdez where he just kind of shoots
- 4:59Speaker 1: up prospect lists. So, yeah, those are some guys place right,
- 5:06Speaker 1: Oh exactly, Josh. I mean obviously they didn't have stuff
- 5:10Speaker 1: like this, you know, when you were coming up in
- 5:13Speaker 1: the game. But I mean, how valuable is this for
- 5:17Speaker 1: you know, a young eighteen to twenty year old kid
- 5:19Speaker 1: who's been playing on a backfield all day to get
- 5:23Speaker 1: some experience under the lights, going up against some guys
- 5:27Speaker 1: who are going to be in the major leagues like
- 5:29Speaker 1: Bubba Chandler played in this game last year, yeah, the
- 5:35Speaker 1: year before. Connor Griffin will be a big leaguer this year.
- 5:38Speaker 1: How valuable is that to you know, be told like, hey,
- 5:41Speaker 1: you know, you're one of the top people in our
- 5:43Speaker 1: org and we want to see what you got against
- 5:45Speaker 1: the best of the best from elsewhere.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Definitely an exciting thing for any name that's mentioned on
- 5:52Speaker 4: that lifts you mentioned these things weren't around when I
- 5:55Speaker 4: was playing. You either had, you know, instructional league, which
- 5:58Speaker 4: even an instruction it wasn't really made a big deal.
- 6:01Speaker 4: And then the other thing is more son the off
- 6:03Speaker 4: season would be like the Arizona Fall League, where you know,
- 6:06Speaker 4: notoriety from you know, being like a minor league guy
- 6:09Speaker 4: or guys that might have you know, just been on
- 6:12Speaker 4: the fringe of breaking the big leagues. I think this
- 6:14Speaker 4: is pretty cool because want us in spring, and it
- 6:17Speaker 4: gives an opportunity not only for fans to see what's
- 6:20Speaker 4: to come. I think what it does is also allows
- 6:25Speaker 4: and just speaking here for you know, other teams, other scouts,
- 6:28Speaker 4: because not everybody mentioned there. You know, you hope that
- 6:31Speaker 4: they played for the Pirates or play for the team
- 6:33Speaker 4: that they're you know, playing in the Breakthrough Series for.
- 6:35Speaker 4: But at the same time, you've already mentioned a couple
- 6:38Speaker 4: of names on there. I think I've been acquired in trades.
- 6:40Speaker 4: So it's one of those things where it's just another
- 6:42Speaker 4: way to highlight you know, some guys that may be
- 6:45Speaker 4: you know, somebody to keep tabs on in the near future.
- 6:48Speaker 4: And for those guys that are getting to play, I
- 6:51Speaker 4: mean It's so much better than being on the backfields
- 6:53Speaker 4: where you got the win screen, you got you know,
- 6:56Speaker 4: daily school bus traffic driving by where you know. It's
- 7:00Speaker 4: it's nice for these guys get to play in a
- 7:01Speaker 4: big league spring trying to feel be.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Under some lights and they'll kind of have that big
- 7:05Speaker 2: league feel.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Yeah, it's gonna be so exciting to see seth Rnandez
- 7:10Speaker 3: because I mean he's been pitching like on the backfields.
- 7:13Speaker 3: He just pitched recently against the Braves, and this is
- 7:15Speaker 3: a nineteen year old who is throwing one hundred, throws
- 7:19Speaker 3: strikes and has a four four pitch mix where he
- 7:24Speaker 3: has the slider, curveball, change up, all of which you
- 7:27Speaker 3: can rely on and throw pretty well and accurately. So
- 7:30Speaker 3: I cannot wait to see him because everything we've been
- 7:33Speaker 3: hearing is like, this guy is the next big, big
- 7:36Speaker 3: name in the Pirates' pitching system.
- 7:38Speaker 1: That change up. There's a reason seth Rnandez his change
- 7:40Speaker 1: up has an eighty grade. It's yeah, I think it's
- 7:43Speaker 1: one of the best pitches in the ORG. And I'm talking.
- 7:46Speaker 2: About so he's got like a he's got like a
- 7:48Speaker 2: plus plus change up and throws a hundred.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah at nineteen years old.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Yeah, this one's for the dudes looking for peak bedroom performance.

- 8:55Speaker 1: All right, so Jay, Hey, now what do you got
- 8:58Speaker 1: all to?
- 8:58Speaker 2: Jay? Now?
- 9:00Speaker 4: The week out which means you know, things are ramping up,
- 9:02Speaker 4: and you know, for those that weren't in the Classic,
- 9:05Speaker 4: and you know, guys that have been you know, pretty
- 9:08Speaker 4: much in spring ramping up. You know, there's been a
- 9:12Speaker 4: pretty decent simple size to see guys getting ready. And
- 9:14Speaker 4: a guy that I want to highlight is a guy
- 9:16Speaker 4: that we had on here was Ryan O'Hearn. I think
- 9:19Speaker 4: Ryan has had a pretty solid, you know start to
- 9:22Speaker 4: the spring, especially being in new colors, new threads, new
- 9:25Speaker 4: organization and just doing what he does. And obviously you
- 9:31Speaker 4: see they're one of his home runs. But one of
- 9:33Speaker 4: the things that I wanted to highlight was even with
- 9:37Speaker 4: things that bats, I want to say he's had maybe
- 9:39Speaker 4: close to thirty, but I wanted to highlight the I
- 9:42Speaker 4: think seven strikeouts, the seven walks.
- 9:44Speaker 2: That ratio right there is a good ratio, especially.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Being in the middle of order, driving and runs and
- 9:51Speaker 4: you know, just having really good at bats. And for me,
- 9:54Speaker 4: that that was an acquisition that they signed this this
- 9:57Speaker 4: off season and hopes to you know, boast that lineup
- 9:59Speaker 4: and this spring right now looks like, you know, it's
- 10:02Speaker 4: going to be a sign of good things to come.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:06Speaker 1: On the note of O'Hearn, I was. I just had
- 10:09Speaker 1: a one on one with Don Kelly, which will probably
- 10:12Speaker 1: be published by the time this podcast post Friday morning.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I asked him about like the revolving DH spot, right, like,
- 10:20Speaker 1: that's what we talked about, and the acquisition of Ozuna,
- 10:23Speaker 1: and he said, you know, when he called Reynolds and
- 10:28Speaker 1: O'Hearn before the move was made, they were both like absolutely,
- 10:32Speaker 1: like we can get Ozuna, like we will take on
- 10:35Speaker 1: that extra work. And he expected that from Reynolds because
- 10:38Speaker 1: he's known Reynolds for almost his entire major league career, right,
- 10:44Speaker 1: but O'Hearn's knew and for him to sign a multi
- 10:47Speaker 1: year deal here probably to be pitched on like hey,
- 10:50Speaker 1: half of your games are gonna come out of the
- 10:52Speaker 1: d H spot and then you know, like I'm sure
- 10:55Speaker 1: there was some anxiety on Kelly's end making that phone call,
- 10:59Speaker 1: being like, hey, we're thinking about signing this guy. I
- 11:01Speaker 1: know we just promised you one thing, but like, in mind,
- 11:04Speaker 1: if we switch it up and ask you to do
- 11:06Speaker 1: something you never really done, and for Hearn to be like,
- 11:09Speaker 1: you know, absolutely do this, I think says a lot
- 11:11Speaker 1: about him. And for Kelly to share that too, you know,
- 11:15Speaker 1: like if if it wasn't like a absolutely yes, I
- 11:19Speaker 1: don't think he's like rushing to the media to share
- 11:21Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. So yeah, I mean, for all
- 11:25Speaker 1: the things that Josh said, as far as what he
- 11:27Speaker 1: can contribute on the field, what he's looked like this spring,
- 11:30Speaker 1: I mean, I think this is gonna be a guy
- 11:32Speaker 1: that you know you have you have to have guys
- 11:36Speaker 1: like that in order to win baseball games, Guys who
- 11:38Speaker 1: are flexible, guys who are thinking about the team. Obviously,
- 11:41Speaker 1: you know this is everyone's career, right, You're always you
- 11:44Speaker 1: always have to think about yourself because the organization thinks
- 11:47Speaker 1: about the team and not about the individuals. That's just
- 11:49Speaker 1: the reality of pretty much any business here in right.
- 11:52Speaker 1: It's about the bottom line. It's about the collective goal
- 11:55Speaker 1: and not the individual goals. But at the same time,
- 11:58Speaker 1: when you have a guy who can make sure he's
- 12:00Speaker 1: taking care of himself but also taking care of the
- 12:02Speaker 1: rest of the boys, that's huge And I think that's
- 12:05Speaker 1: what they have in O'Hearn, which is invaluable.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Yeah, that was gonna be my first comment as well.
- 12:10Speaker 3: No Is, I've been so impressed by his buy in
- 12:14Speaker 3: with the position change. I mean saying he's like, I'm
- 12:17Speaker 3: a right fielder now.
- 12:18Speaker 2: He doesn't.
- 12:19Speaker 3: He's like, I'll play some first base if I need to.
- 12:21Speaker 3: I'll dh if I need to. But he's fully bought
- 12:23Speaker 3: in and committed to being in that outfield now, which
- 12:26Speaker 3: is really cool to see as like a guy that
- 12:29Speaker 3: just stepped into the team. That's a lot of transition,
- 12:32Speaker 3: it's a lot of change, and he's handled it in
- 12:33Speaker 3: stride by still hitting well in the spring. He's consistently produced.
- 12:37Speaker 3: He's consistently had great at bets, as Josh noted, with
- 12:40Speaker 3: seven strikeouts, seven walks and thirty plus at bets.
- 12:43Speaker 1: That's great.
- 12:45Speaker 3: So I'm yeah, I think he's gonna have a fantastic here,
- 12:48Speaker 3: maybe compete for another All Star spot, and really contribute
- 12:53Speaker 3: for the Pirates. And this is a guy that they
- 12:55Speaker 3: just did not have last year. So having more offensive production,
- 12:59Speaker 3: I mean, have been by far and away their best
- 13:01Speaker 3: bat last year. So adding him to this lineup is
- 13:04Speaker 3: going to make things a lot more fun to watch
- 13:07Speaker 3: at P and C this year.
- 13:09Speaker 4: Sure, you use the word that I was thinking by
- 13:12Speaker 4: in he bought in, and as basically, when you have
- 13:15Speaker 4: guys like that, to your point, to your credit, Noah
- 13:18Speaker 4: you know, not only is he worrying about himself for
- 13:20Speaker 4: it makes the team better.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Some quick clean up here from last show we talked about, Josh,
- 13:27Speaker 1: I believe you asked if the Pirate if Clevenger has
- 13:31Speaker 1: an out contract. So this comes from the Bucks on
- 13:35Speaker 1: Deck the Bucks on Deck sub stack. There's some very
- 13:40Speaker 1: good information there for Pirate fans and even people who
- 13:42Speaker 1: cover the team like myself. Mike Clevenger actually does. He
- 13:45Speaker 1: has an upward mobility clause on March twentieth, so today,
- 13:49Speaker 1: so the Pirates are going to have to make a decision,
- 13:52Speaker 1: make a decisions today, and then he also has release
- 13:55Speaker 1: clauses on May first, June first, July first, and August fifth.
- 13:59Speaker 1: That's a that's a later Pirates problem.
- 14:02Speaker 4: But yeah, yeah, but I mean that that deal won't
- 14:05Speaker 4: be for all three.
- 14:06Speaker 2: That's why I was like, I was curious.
- 14:07Speaker 4: I know some guys will have one, and I thought
- 14:10Speaker 4: he might have been a guy that could have potentially
- 14:12Speaker 4: had one at the end of spring.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Yeah, so yeah, that'll be an interesting thing to see.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I mean, you know, Future no is probably writing about
- 14:19Speaker 1: this right now, so we'll see, we'll see what happens. Guys.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Any final thoughts before we wrap this one up.
- 14:32Speaker 4: To be honest, I can't, did we I mean I
- 14:36Speaker 4: was gonna say tough loss for the USA in the Classic.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I don't know if we mentioned that.
- 14:40Speaker 1: We don't.
- 14:41Speaker 2: We don't talk. Yeah what happened.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Yeah, but I was gonna say, nonetheless, our boy Paul
- 14:46Speaker 4: did what he's supposed to, you know.
- 14:49Speaker 2: But but I thought, you know, really good game.
- 14:51Speaker 4: And uh, with that being said, that being over World
- 14:55Speaker 4: week away and excited for you know, this season to
- 14:57Speaker 4: get underway.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'll just piggyback off of that. Paul Skin's
- 15:02Speaker 3: walking out of the World Baseball Classic just looking like
- 15:06Speaker 3: there's steam coming out of his ears, just pissed off, livid.
- 15:09Speaker 3: I'm excited to see him walk into the season opening
- 15:12Speaker 3: day and take all of that pissed off energy out
- 15:16Speaker 3: on the Mets. So I can't wait under one week
- 15:19Speaker 3: away from baseball now, So get ready.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Mark, That's just kind of how he looks.
- 15:24Speaker 3: When he watch Yeah, true. Yeah, he's around anyone that's
- 15:28Speaker 3: not Bobby with Junior yeah yeah, or like.
- 15:30Speaker 1: A fire truck.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like those two things.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that's just kind of how he is. No, but
- 15:35Speaker 1: in all seriousness, that was an awesome tournament. I think
- 15:38Speaker 1: it was an overwhelmingly net positive for the game of baseball.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Team USA probably didn't do itself any favors with some
- 15:47Speaker 1: of the things that happened throughout that tournament, but I
- 15:51Speaker 1: think a lot of people. I think it's always good
- 15:55Speaker 1: when people get to experience what they love through different culture,
- 16:01Speaker 1: right there, if they're fans of music, if they're fans
- 16:04Speaker 1: of food, if they're fans of art, and in this case,
- 16:07Speaker 1: fans of baseball. Seeing that, you know what, hey, people
- 16:11Speaker 1: who look different than me, who talk different than me,
- 16:14Speaker 1: and who you know, they live a different lifestyle than me.
- 16:18Speaker 1: They play this game a little differently, but at the
- 16:20Speaker 1: end of the day, they love it just the way
- 16:22Speaker 1: I do. And my style might not be the same
- 16:24Speaker 1: way as their style. But together, when we all come
- 16:27Speaker 1: together and we play in this tournament, we all get
- 16:29Speaker 1: to celebrate the thing that we collectively love, which is baseball,
- 16:32Speaker 1: and I hope that, you know, people embrace that. And
- 16:35Speaker 1: it seems like they did. It seemed you know, Josh,
- 16:37Speaker 1: like when not long ago, when you were playing, bat
- 16:40Speaker 1: flips were taboo. You were a bad guy if you
- 16:43Speaker 1: did it. Now you're getting criticized like tim Usa is
