- 1:53Speaker 1: of your recent travels.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean since the last time we were together,
- 1:58Speaker 2: I've done quite a bit, and I think if we
- 2:01Speaker 2: were just to go go back a little bit. One
- 2:04Speaker 2: of the most recent was driving from Panama to Mexico
- 2:09Speaker 2: in a nineteen sixty eight land Rovers Series two A.
- 2:16Speaker 2: And you know, my good friend Miguel in Mexico City
- 2:20Speaker 2: sent me this text, as he does often, and it says, hey,
- 2:25Speaker 2: I just bought a He sent me a picture. Actually
- 2:28Speaker 2: it was a picture of this land Rover in Columbia.
- 2:31Speaker 2: He's like, hey, I just bought this. Do you want
- 2:33Speaker 2: to drive to Mexico with me from Columbia? I said
- 2:36Speaker 2: yes because I love a great terrible idea. And this
- 2:40Speaker 2: was Geez. This was probably July or August of twenty
- 2:46Speaker 2: twenty one, and by February of twenty twenty two, he
- 2:51Speaker 2: still hadn't gotten the truck, but he had it, had
- 2:54Speaker 2: gotten it. You know, he finally did it.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Need to be driven through part of Columbia or was
- 2:58Speaker 1: it just getting get shipped?
- 3:00Speaker 2: He initially tried, I mean, you've got a Mexican dealing
- 3:05Speaker 2: with Colombians, and I mean it's it's a perfect analogy
- 3:08Speaker 2: to our friendship, his mexicanness dealing with my colombianness, and
- 3:13Speaker 2: it's like cultural difference. It's a culture cultural difference. I mean,
- 3:16Speaker 2: it's just it's it's it's comedy.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 2: So you know, six months later, he finally flies down
- 3:22Speaker 2: there to Median and drives it from Median to Carta
- 3:26Speaker 2: Hannah to have it shipped from Carta Hannah to Panama.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I couldn't do it for whatever reason. I think I
- 3:33Speaker 2: was busy with the project. And you know, he's texted
- 3:38Speaker 2: me from the road He's like, Oh, this thing's amazing.
- 3:41Speaker 2: It works great, Like it's we're going to have such
- 3:43Speaker 2: a great trip. It's going to be in Panama in
- 3:46Speaker 2: three weeks. I'm like, okay, just let me know. And
- 3:49Speaker 2: this is you know, early early on in twenty twenty two.
- 3:53Speaker 2: And as those things go, there's some quagmires happen, you know,
- 3:58Speaker 2: things don't exactly. I think we were supposed to be.
- 4:00Speaker 2: It was supposed to be kind of an end of
- 4:02Speaker 2: February my birthday type of trip. Fast forward to May,
- 4:08Speaker 2: early May. I fly to Mexico City to meet him,
- 4:10Speaker 2: to fly to Panama to get the truck. And I'm
- 4:14Speaker 2: hanging out in Mexico City and I keeps he's this
- 4:18Speaker 2: this ball of stress, just you know, like I don't
- 4:21Speaker 2: know what's going on, you know, like it hasn't left
- 4:23Speaker 2: cart the Hana. They keep telling me they're putting it
- 4:25Speaker 2: on the next boat. They're putting it on the next boat. Sure,
- 4:27Speaker 2: And I'm just like, you know whatever, Like I you know,
- 4:31Speaker 2: these it's not a bad place to be. Yeah, Mexico
- 4:33Speaker 2: City is a great place to be. The food's the
- 4:36Speaker 2: best in the world, and that's interesting. We have to
- 4:38Speaker 2: dig into that. Yeah. Yeah, So I'm hanging out in
- 4:41Speaker 2: Mexico City and you know, meanwhile, I have my friends
- 4:45Speaker 2: are all you know, my California, La friends. They're all
- 4:50Speaker 2: going to uh to Baja to RaSE the Mexican one
- 4:53Speaker 2: thousand and I'm like, Miguel, what's up with this this car?
- 4:56Speaker 2: Because I'm going to fly to Baja real quick and
- 5:00Speaker 2: the Mexican one thousand and then we can go do
- 5:03Speaker 2: this this trip. Sure, And he's like, go do the Mexican.
- 5:06Speaker 2: He's so frustrated with these these people. It's like, go
- 5:09Speaker 2: do the Mexican one thousands. I go do the Mexican
- 5:10Speaker 2: one thousand and finish that and then fly by. Then
- 5:15Speaker 2: he has jumped through so many hoops. I can't imagine
- 5:19Speaker 2: the stress that he's had because he's literally flown to
- 5:22Speaker 2: Panama City, taken a taxi out to the port town
- 5:27Speaker 2: of I can't remember what it is because I've never
- 5:29Speaker 2: been there. Yeah, but it's the port town out on
- 5:31Speaker 2: the east coast on the Caribbean of Panama. Picks up
- 5:34Speaker 2: his car, you know, and has to pay bribes and
- 5:37Speaker 2: all this stuff, you know, like the port's on strike,
- 5:41Speaker 2: but it's not on strike if you pay him money.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Like all the weird Panama stuff.
- 5:46Speaker 3: So I fly.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Usually Panama's pretty good as far as Central American countries
- 5:50Speaker 1: go on shipping, they're usually pretty good.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's what that economy is, right. Sure
- 5:55Speaker 2: shoots the Panama Canal. It is. So I fly down
- 5:59Speaker 2: to Panama. I get there at like six in the morning,
- 6:02Speaker 2: and I meet meet with Miguel and I'm like, how's
- 6:04Speaker 2: the car. He's like, so good man, we're dial We
- 6:07Speaker 2: had a few little things. There was a leak there,
- 6:09Speaker 2: you know, we have it's hit the mechanics right now,
- 6:11Speaker 2: but we're we're dial like great. So I've got a
- 6:15Speaker 2: full day in Panama City while they're finishing things up.
- 6:18Speaker 2: You know. The next day we get on the road
- 6:20Speaker 2: and it's pouring rain, you know, like Central America lawn rain. Sure,
- 6:27Speaker 2: and literally day one it's just spewing cool out of
- 6:33Speaker 2: the back of the engine, you know, day one, hour
- 6:36Speaker 2: four and so you're barely out of metro barely. I
- 6:40Speaker 2: mean we were. We were like three hours out of
- 6:43Speaker 2: Panama City, okay, right, you know, and that's a good
- 6:46Speaker 2: road's road, pan American Highway. Were cruising along and come
- 6:51Speaker 2: to find out, you know, after you know, being in
- 6:54Speaker 2: the car with Miguel and actually being able to catch
- 6:56Speaker 2: up on what was going on is you know, on
- 6:58Speaker 2: those little series motors. Was there in England and in
- 7:02Speaker 2: Europe and North America there was the the back of
- 7:05Speaker 2: the engine had about a i'd say a one inch
- 7:08Speaker 2: hole in it. That was your heater. Oh you know,
- 7:10Speaker 2: went to the heater core. Well that in South America
- 7:12Speaker 2: and the equatorial countries, they just plug that up with something.
- 7:17Speaker 3: You didn't need.
- 7:18Speaker 2: It didn't need it, you didn't need a heater, so
- 7:20Speaker 2: it just stayed plugged. Well, this plug had rotted to
- 7:25Speaker 2: nothing and was spewing coolant out of it, and it
- 7:30Speaker 2: was such that it was in the back of the engine.
- 7:32Speaker 2: You had like you know, an inch maybe to get
- 7:35Speaker 2: back there to actually see it pretty clearly where it's coming,
- 7:37Speaker 2: clearly where it's coming from, and I mean to the
- 7:39Speaker 2: point where, like when it actually broke open, you could
- 7:42Speaker 2: feel it against the firewall of you know, the bulkhead
- 7:45Speaker 2: of the of the land rover. So it's spewing we
- 7:48Speaker 2: I don't you know, JB. Well every type of thing
- 7:53Speaker 2: I think we had, maybe the bottom of a of
- 7:57Speaker 2: a soda can like covering it, you know, whatever it took.
- 8:01Speaker 2: But we get down the road, you know, like it's going.
- 8:03Speaker 2: We figured it out on this little shop. And the
- 8:06Speaker 2: amazing thing about any developing country that I've ever been
- 8:10Speaker 2: in is when you're a traveler, those guys are rooting
- 8:14Speaker 2: for you. They are they will drop anything to help
- 8:17Speaker 2: you get back on the road. Sure, and not that
- 8:20Speaker 2: these guys at the first shop that we stopped at
- 8:23Speaker 2: had anything going on. They were like, all right, we're
- 8:26Speaker 2: going to figure this out and get you back on
- 8:28Speaker 2: the road. You need to get get going north. Yeah,
- 8:30Speaker 2: and what a novelty to see this fifty year old
- 8:34Speaker 2: car with a Mexican and a Colombian.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Totally.
- 8:38Speaker 2: So we cruise north and we make it that night
- 8:42Speaker 2: to not as far as we had hoped, but we
- 8:45Speaker 2: make it to this little you know, we pull in
- 8:47Speaker 2: and it's these little cabanas that cost like sixty bucks
- 8:51Speaker 2: a night. You know, it was it's exciting sixty bucks
- 8:54Speaker 2: a night. But they were great. I mean they were
- 8:55Speaker 2: like gotcha, first class, gotcha. Yeah. So like a little
- 8:59Speaker 2: hotel room, like a little hotel about. It was a cavana,
- 9:01Speaker 2: you know, with a pool and fed dinner, you know,
- 9:04Speaker 2: like the Falling Crois room. Yeah, it was amazing. The
- 9:08Speaker 2: next morning we get on the road, it's it's you know,
- 9:10Speaker 2: this foggy scene and jungle and you know, I literally
- 9:14Speaker 2: look over to Miguel and I go, dude, this is
- 9:16Speaker 2: it We're driving north on the Pan American Highway, like
- 9:20Speaker 2: does it get any better than this? Like how lucky
- 9:22Speaker 2: are we? You know? And we're cruise along and then
- 9:26Speaker 2: you could feel whatever we'd use to plug that hole
- 9:30Speaker 2: hit the bulkhead and just steam everywhere. And there we
- 9:34Speaker 2: are on the side of the road, just dead. Everything's
- 9:38Speaker 2: wet because we're in a land rover and it'd been raining, right,
- 9:41Speaker 2: So I just get out and I start hanging my
- 9:44Speaker 2: clothes up and everything's wet, and I'm like, here, we're
- 9:46Speaker 2: not going anywhere, right, And so we get towed to David,
- 9:51Speaker 2: which is a northern city in Panama, and we get
- 9:56Speaker 2: a little bit more resources there too. Yeah, there's more resources.
- 10:00Speaker 2: It's a it's a decent town, you know, it's not
- 10:02Speaker 2: it's not a small place. It's not big by any means.
- 10:06Speaker 2: There's nothing over four stories there. Sure, But we'd heard
- 10:10Speaker 2: about a European mechanic there, a check guy. It's been
- 10:13Speaker 2: in been in Panama for a while. And we get
- 10:17Speaker 2: the car towed there and the guy's just looking at
- 10:21Speaker 2: it and he's speaks perfect Spanish. So he and Miguel
- 10:25Speaker 2: are going back and forth and he's never worked on
- 10:29Speaker 2: a land Rover before. But how complicated could it be?
- 10:32Speaker 3: Sure?
- 10:32Speaker 2: You know, like it's it's a land rover. Blah blah
- 10:35Speaker 2: blah blah blah. We end up within the span and
- 10:38Speaker 2: and like, like I said, drops everything and the only
- 10:41Speaker 2: thing in this this shop. And I say it's a shop,
- 10:44Speaker 2: it's it's literally a palapa, right, you know, with with
- 10:47Speaker 2: a lift in it. And on this lift is a
- 10:49Speaker 2: range rover sport that is in a million pieces. Like
- 10:53Speaker 2: I'm familiar with range rovers and I've never seen a
- 10:56Speaker 2: range rover in this. Like the monocoque shell was off
- 11:00Speaker 2: of the tray on the bottom and the engine was
- 11:02Speaker 2: sideways with all the pieces off, and wow, you know
- 11:04Speaker 2: there's BMW's but no old cars. But he takes we
- 11:10Speaker 2: take the engine out, We send the engine, like the
- 11:13Speaker 2: engine disappears on the back of a truck. Sure to
- 11:17Speaker 2: go get it machined so that we could machine a
- 11:19Speaker 2: plug and actually do it right. Sure, so it's not
- 11:23Speaker 2: going to corrode that whole thing. And then it's just
- 11:26Speaker 2: gone and we're just hanging out at this shop with
- 11:29Speaker 2: a pit bull on a chain. You know, We're just like,
- 11:32Speaker 2: all right, how how long is this gonna take? Well,
- 11:36Speaker 2: I don't know, it's it's at the shop. Can we check. No,
- 11:42Speaker 2: they'll get to us. So a day goes by and
- 11:45Speaker 2: we're like, how how long is this gonna take? When
- 11:49Speaker 2: they get when they get done, yeah, manyana, manyana, when
- 11:52Speaker 2: they get done, they'll get done. And we're just like, okay,
- 11:57Speaker 2: this is what we're doing. It's such a blur. I
- 12:00Speaker 2: think we were there two nights. That's not too bad.
- 12:04Speaker 2: No for pulling an engine. Sure, you know, the engine
- 12:07Speaker 2: comes back and we put it, put it back in.
- 12:10Speaker 2: You know, Miguel had traveled with a new clutch some
- 12:14Speaker 2: other parts that he decided to put on.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Might as well do it all the engines.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Might as well do it while the engines out right.
- 12:20Speaker 2: So we get the engine back in and as soon
- 12:23Speaker 2: as we try and drive, I'm like, dude, this clutch
- 12:25Speaker 2: isn't This clutch isn't right. There's something completely off with
- 12:30Speaker 2: this clutch. He's like, I don't care. We're going I'm like,
- 12:32Speaker 2: all right, I mean it drives like, we barely get
- 12:34Speaker 2: in the first gear. But let's go going north, and
- 12:38Speaker 2: we just head north and we get into.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Probably got the Nicaragua next.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Yeah, well cost Rica, oh cos yeah, And we get
- 12:45Speaker 2: to the co streaking border and it is a quagmire
- 12:50Speaker 2: like I've never seen. It's pouring rain. There's all these
- 12:53Speaker 2: semi trucks that are blot like sure a mile back.
- 12:57Speaker 2: We walk up and we talk to the people at
- 12:58Speaker 2: the window and they're like, well, if you just and
- 13:01Speaker 2: they show on the map, if you just go up
- 13:04Speaker 2: head east along the border, you're going to see an
- 13:07Speaker 2: alley way that gets you through. And we're like, what
- 13:10Speaker 2: what do you mean. They're like, yeah, just go through,
- 13:13Speaker 2: like and then go to the Costa Rican side and
- 13:15Speaker 2: they'll they'll check you in and go. But don't we
- 13:17Speaker 2: need to check out. I'm like, it's Panama, Like nobody cares.
- 13:21Speaker 2: So we literally cross the border through this muddy alley
- 13:26Speaker 2: you know, and end up in Costa Rica and Pavonas
- 13:29Speaker 2: And it was really really like Pavonas, is this the
- 13:32Speaker 2: one of the longest left breaks surf breaks in the world. Wow,
- 13:36Speaker 2: And I'm not a surfer route and identify as a
- 13:38Speaker 2: surfer rount and get surfing, you know, like Mahalo. It
- 13:41Speaker 2: was going off. And to be in this town and
- 13:44Speaker 2: see the energy of the surfers and these people just
- 13:47Speaker 2: so psyched about that wave was incredible.
- 13:50Speaker 3: That is incredible.
- 13:51Speaker 2: You know. The next day we get on the road.
- 13:54Speaker 2: The truck's running great. It's torrential rain, the kind of
- 13:59Speaker 2: rain you read it. You know, I'm sitting there, Miguel's driving,
- 14:02Speaker 2: and my windshield wiper just goes flying off. It's gone.
- 14:07Speaker 3: The goes the.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Full like things gone. It's just like, all right, so
- 14:13Speaker 2: that's just how we've got one windshield wiper. It's cool,
- 14:16Speaker 2: and we're cruising along and then the we'd filled up
- 14:20Speaker 2: with gas and then the truck just dies right on
- 14:24Speaker 2: the highway on the inside of this turn, and Miguel
- 14:27Speaker 2: was like, I'm going to back up down to the bottom. Like, dude,
- 14:30Speaker 2: We're not backing up anywhere. I'm just super safe guy,
- 14:32Speaker 2: you know, like abnormally safe. But you know, there's trucks
- 14:36Speaker 2: coming by and everything. And finally, you know, we get
- 14:40Speaker 2: get a toe again into I can't remember what town
- 14:46Speaker 2: it was, but it was a terrible coaster, like super touristy, right,
- 14:50Speaker 2: you know, everyone like trying to sell you a picture
- 14:52Speaker 2: with the iguana, you know, a type of players. We're
- 14:56Speaker 2: there and it's like, all right, we need to figure
- 14:57Speaker 2: out this car. Let's try and find a mechanic here
- 15:00Speaker 2: that can figure out like, did we get bad gas?
- 15:02Speaker 2: Do we need to drain the gas? What's what's the issue.
- 15:06Speaker 2: You know, we had a mechanic come and he's like,
- 15:08Speaker 2: you know, your battery is good? I don't know. I
- 15:12Speaker 2: called my contact in San Jose, the capital, who was
- 15:15Speaker 2: a very tied end to the whole land Rover nice world,
- 15:18Speaker 2: you know, super good guy to know Jose, and he
- 15:22Speaker 2: was mixed, like, here's the shop. You need to get
- 15:24Speaker 2: to this shop, he's the landrover guy. He'll take care
- 15:26Speaker 2: of it. And I was like, you know, I'm not
- 15:29Speaker 2: going to San Jose. I'm over this. You know, if
- 15:33Speaker 2: you can get the car fixed in two days, cool,
- 15:35Speaker 2: If not, I'm going today to Santa Teresa to my
- 15:39Speaker 2: buddy's hotel and I'm going to hang out. Okay, you
- 15:43Speaker 2: can fix the Yeah, you can fix the land Rover
- 15:46Speaker 2: that was supposed to be fixed by the time we
- 15:47Speaker 2: got on. And then you know, if it's fixed in
- 15:50Speaker 2: two days, we'll continue going north. If it's not fixing
- 15:53Speaker 2: two days, I'm flying home. Sure over over the land
- 15:57Speaker 2: Rover that breaks down every day. Sure he gets it fixed,
- 16:00Speaker 2: and it's great, like, and we get on the road
- 16:02Speaker 2: and we're cruising. You know, after two days it was
- 16:04Speaker 2: two days. I had a wonderful two days and in
- 16:07Speaker 2: Santa Terresa with my friends at House of Somos.
- 16:10Speaker 3: And you're ready to get back on the road.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Was ready to get back on the road, like I.
- 16:14Speaker 2: So I fly from Santa Dresa to Liberia and we
- 16:18Speaker 2: jump in the truck and we're heading north to Nicaragua.
- 16:21Speaker 2: We've got lots of time. It's super cool, like we're cruising,
- 16:25Speaker 2: trucks running great, nice run the great, the best it's been.
- 16:28Speaker 2: We get to the Nicaragua border and they're like, oh,
- 16:30Speaker 2: you need a negative COVID test. It's like, go get
- 16:35Speaker 2: the negative COVID test. Have to you know, it costs
- 16:37Speaker 2: us an arm and a leg. Sure cost Rica because
- 16:39Speaker 2: everything's expensive in Costa Rica. We get back to the border,
- 16:43Speaker 2: get through, and then it's like they're looking at our
- 16:46Speaker 2: passports and they're like a Colombian and a Mexican no joking, no,
- 16:51Speaker 2: like anything, it's where's the drugs? Like we don't have
- 16:56Speaker 2: any drugs? Like go through, go through our stuff. No,
- 16:59Speaker 2: where's it hiding in the truck, Like take the truck apart.
- 17:02Speaker 2: It's a tin can. You can't hide drugs anywhere. Yeah,
- 17:06Speaker 2: and they're underneath it, like knocking on stuff, patting it down.
- 17:10Speaker 2: All our stuff's just flipped out of the truck. You know.
- 17:13Speaker 2: It's getting dark and it's raining, you know, and here
- 17:17Speaker 2: we are at the Nickeroguan border and they take it.
- 17:21Speaker 2: They're like, well, we're gonna go x ray it. Go ahead,
- 17:23Speaker 2: go xtray it, you know, like there's nothing in this truck,
- 17:26Speaker 2: like you can, you can, you don't need to x
- 17:29Speaker 2: ray it, right, there's no there's no hidden valley exactly.
- 17:31Speaker 2: They're like, well, it's in the frame. We know it's
- 17:33Speaker 2: in the frame, okay, like whatever. So they go the
- 17:38Speaker 2: x ray and like, well the x ray doesn't show anything,
- 17:40Speaker 2: we're gonna have to drill holes in the frame. They
- 17:43Speaker 2: drilled eight holes in the frame, four on each side. Wow,
- 17:46Speaker 2: with nothing, you know. And at this point it's almost midnight.
- 17:50Speaker 2: We've been there since six pm at the border dealing
- 17:53Speaker 2: with this and they're about to close.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I've never heard of a frame being drilled at Oh yeah,
- 17:58Speaker 1: this is the first time for that.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Oh yeah, So it's midnight and that's clearly not the
- 18:03Speaker 2: drug running vehicle of choice. No Classic Land run Classic Land. Yeah,
- 18:08Speaker 2: it's ridiculous. I mean it's slow, it's exactly there's no
- 18:12Speaker 2: place to hide, any place to hide anything.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:15Speaker 2: So it's midnight and they closed the border at midnight,
- 18:17Speaker 2: like you can't go on after midnight. And Miguel goes
- 18:20Speaker 2: running in because he's got the stamps from all of
- 18:23Speaker 2: our stuff, you know, he goes running in and the
- 18:25Speaker 2: guy like pulls the blinds down and then he brings
- 18:28Speaker 2: him back up, gives us our stamp, and we're in
- 18:31Speaker 2: to Nicaragua. Yeah, you know, and what a beautiful country.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Nicaragua was amazing. The roads, the roads are the roads
- 18:38Speaker 2: are great. Well there, so they sound better than when
- 18:40Speaker 2: I was there. Yeah, the roads were super rough.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I remember one out of leone was just it was
- 18:45Speaker 1: probably the worst potholes I'd ever seen.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Really. No, the roads were great. We cruised through Nicaragua
- 18:51Speaker 2: nice into El Salvador. Oh, we had to go through
- 18:54Speaker 2: hun Dress right.
- 18:56Speaker 3: That one little that one little corner.
- 18:57Speaker 2: That one little corner. And we planned on getting to
- 19:01Speaker 2: Honduras earlier, but we got into Honduras just about as
- 19:04Speaker 2: the sun was going down and we didn't want to
- 19:06Speaker 2: spend the night in Honduras. We just want to get
- 19:08Speaker 2: through it, get to El Salvador. And it's raining, Like
- 19:13Speaker 2: just just take that. Like the rest of this story.
- 19:16Speaker 2: It's raining. It rain the entire time. But we get
- 19:20Speaker 2: into Hunters and we're driving along and we have like
- 19:23Speaker 2: maybe another two three hours in Honduras and the headlights
- 19:27Speaker 2: just go out. They don't get dimmed, they just they
- 19:30Speaker 2: just go out. Lucas, Lucas, the Prince of Darkness is
- 19:33Speaker 2: living up to his name. And we pull over on
- 19:37Speaker 2: the side of the road and we're in Honduras and
- 19:40Speaker 2: you've heard nothing but nightmares, right, Honduras, Right, it could
- 19:42Speaker 2: be a challenge, dangerous place. It's all these things, blah
- 19:46Speaker 2: blah blah blah blah. And we're on the side of
- 19:47Speaker 2: the road with no lights in this truck and you know,
- 19:53Speaker 2: a Hunter and stops and you know, he's like, hey,
- 19:55Speaker 2: can we help you, and you're like, you know, I sure,
- 19:58Speaker 2: like we're not exactly sure what's going on. And he's
- 20:01Speaker 2: put he's got a flashlight, you know, he's poking around
- 20:04Speaker 2: in there and he's like, I don't know. And then
- 20:07Speaker 2: Miguel's in the in the driver's seat, and he's flicking
- 20:10Speaker 2: things around and he did something you like one of
- 20:13Speaker 2: those one up, three down, yeah, cross your finger, and
- 20:16Speaker 2: the lights come on and we goes like, okay, we've
- 20:19Speaker 2: got lights, let's go. And we we have no idea
- 20:23Speaker 2: what it was. We had lights and we can figure
- 20:26Speaker 2: it out later. We'll figure it out later. And we
- 20:28Speaker 2: get on the road and we just go. We make
- 20:30Speaker 2: it into Al Salvador and I'll Salvador.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Because what how far is it between those two? Because
- 20:36Speaker 1: when I went through Honduras, I went through Taguchi Galpa,
- 20:38Speaker 1: and I went I came into Copon City in the north,
- 20:41Speaker 1: so we took the long way through. But yeah, that
- 20:43Speaker 1: little corner looks like it's fairly short. It's super fifty sixty.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Yeah, something like that. And the time suck is always
- 20:50Speaker 2: the crossing. Yeah sure, because especially Nicaragua, coming in and
- 20:55Speaker 2: out of Nicaragua was was a challenge. It was absolutely,
- 20:59Speaker 2: I mean, paperwork isn't right. It's your paperwork, you know.
- 21:02Speaker 2: The guys on the other side did that. It's not us,
- 21:05Speaker 2: you know, and they're just super super tough you know,
- 21:09Speaker 2: to deal with. Everywhere else it was a breeze nice,
- 21:13Speaker 2: you know, just yeah, so Yeah, coming out of Honduras
- 21:17Speaker 2: into El Salvador, it's it's late at night, it's raining,
- 21:22Speaker 2: but you know, El Salvador was great, you know. And
- 21:24Speaker 2: I learned that El Salvador has more volcanoes than any
- 21:28Speaker 2: other country and it's one of the teeniest countries. Yeah, yeah,
- 21:32Speaker 2: teeny country. And I drove all the way through El
- 21:36Speaker 2: Salvador and we had one stop before Guatemala, and that
- 21:40Speaker 2: clutch had just wrecked me. I could barely walk by
- 21:44Speaker 2: the time we got to Guatemala. My legs they're so heavy,
- 21:47Speaker 2: those clutches are so heavy. You know. Guatemala again uneventful.
- 21:51Speaker 2: I got to spend some great time with my family there.
- 21:54Speaker 2: They live in Antigua and Guatemala City, and it was
- 21:57Speaker 2: just wonderful. That is a great bookend of the trip.
- 22:00Speaker 2: It was just it was one of those trips that
- 22:02Speaker 2: like anything that could possibly go wrong went wrong, and
- 22:06Speaker 2: we just we got no you know, squabbles with each other,
- 22:09Speaker 2: as travelers do, but then there's that mutual respect that
- 22:13Speaker 2: kept you going. You know. It was one of the
- 22:16Speaker 2: great trips of my life that was completely on pavement.
- 22:20Speaker 2: And yeah, I mean there was a few a few
- 22:23Speaker 2: things that we did that were off pavement, but it
- 22:26Speaker 2: was brutal in that truck hold well.
- 22:27Speaker 1: And that's the thing is overlanding. You can go around
- 22:31Speaker 1: the world overlanding and not go off pavement and you
- 22:34Speaker 1: can still be overlanding.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:36Speaker 1: If you if you cross all of Russia and you
- 22:39Speaker 1: drive all the way the length of the Pan American
- 22:41Speaker 1: most of it is paved, Yeah, and you're having one
- 22:44Speaker 1: hell of an overland adventure.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Yeah. And the fun thing about that trip is I've
- 22:48Speaker 2: always always, I've done it here in the US a
- 22:52Speaker 2: few times where I've bought a car, bottom motorcycle or
- 22:54Speaker 2: something and flown there, grab it and ridden back, driven back.
- 22:59Speaker 2: It's fun. You know, you've got this new thing that
- 23:01Speaker 2: you don't know. You know, you're trusting somebody that says
- 23:05Speaker 2: it's great. And I've always wanted to do that internationally
- 23:08Speaker 2: and that my friend Miguel did it and we pulled
- 23:11Speaker 2: it off and it was just it was so much
- 23:13Speaker 2: fun because you know, we just figured it out as
- 23:17Speaker 2: we went. Did you have any any lessons, any takeaways
- 23:20Speaker 2: from that? I think at my stage, it's it's reinforcement
- 23:25Speaker 2: of previous lessons, you know, of just like, hey, it's
- 23:29Speaker 2: not the end of the world. No one's hurt, no
- 23:32Speaker 2: one's life's in danger. You know, you just need to
- 23:36Speaker 2: be patient and things work themselves out. Kind of that
- 23:39Speaker 2: constant forward motion too, that I keep moving through the obstacle. Yeah, totally. Well,
- 23:44Speaker 2: it's you know, I think I learned it in mountaineering,
- 23:46Speaker 2: and something that a mentor of mine, Ace Cavali, always
- 23:50Speaker 2: says is constant forward motion. You know, you just no
- 23:53Speaker 2: matter what, you just keep moving, especially after you've reached
- 23:57Speaker 2: the summit, because the summit's only half there. You know.
- 24:00Speaker 2: It was that constant forward motion of not getting discouraged,
- 24:03Speaker 2: you know, because it's easy to just throw your hands
- 24:06Speaker 2: up and go, the car's broken, we don't know what's
- 24:09Speaker 2: wrong with it, right, but let's keep pushing it forward,
- 24:11Speaker 2: Let's keep moving. And you had a heck of an
- 24:13Speaker 2: adventure because of it. Oh yeah, it was amazing.
- 24:15Speaker 1: And I think that's one of the things that a
- 24:17Speaker 1: lot of people that maybe even look down on a
- 24:20Speaker 1: classic land Rover for travel miss is that it kind
- 24:24Speaker 1: of guarantees adventure. I mean, I don't want to speak
- 24:27Speaker 1: for you, but for me, that's kind of what I
- 24:29Speaker 1: signed up for. I wanted things to be difficult, and
- 24:33Speaker 1: I wanted to learn about myself and to grow and
- 24:35Speaker 1: to have challenges along the way. And if you drive
- 24:38Speaker 1: a what year.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Was that, it was a sixty seven.
- 24:41Speaker 1: If you drive a sixty seven series land Rover, you're
- 24:44Speaker 1: going to have one hell of an adventure pretty much guaranteed.
- 24:47Speaker 2: One hundred percent. And you know, in much to mcguell's credit,
- 24:50Speaker 2: he had all the right tools, yeah, all the right
- 24:53Speaker 2: spare parts as well as he could sure, you know,
- 24:56Speaker 2: without carrying it, without toying a totally sever the truck, right.
- 25:00Speaker 2: That makes it easier. That makes the adventure easier, really,
- 25:03Speaker 2: you know that It's part of the way I personally
- 25:07Speaker 2: learned being out there and having these types of trips
- 25:10Speaker 2: is be as prepared as you can be, right, and
- 25:13Speaker 2: the breakdown, the getting stuck is part of it, you know.
- 25:17Speaker 2: You know, our mutual friend Jack Quinlan really embraced that,
- 25:20Speaker 2: you know, and I really learned from him to embrace that.
- 25:23Speaker 2: The you know, hey, this is part of the deal.
- 25:25Speaker 2: And if we get into camp or the next town
- 25:28Speaker 2: at three am, it's part of the deal. Was we
- 25:31Speaker 2: had this time on the side of the road, like
- 25:33Speaker 2: the time you got stuck in Columbia, you know exactly.
- 25:37Speaker 2: That was all the Panadas had, alladas.
- 25:42Speaker 1: The little shop, you know, like their kids are going
- 25:45Speaker 1: to college now and everything else.
- 25:47Speaker 3: It was good. Yeah, you know.
- 25:48Speaker 1: And I'm just sitting there on the side of the
- 25:50Speaker 1: road with a broken BMW and and you know, just
- 25:53Speaker 1: waiting for you guys to come back.
- 25:56Speaker 2: But it's talking to the locals.
- 25:57Speaker 3: It was great.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Part of the thing, you know, part of the part
- 26:00Speaker 2: of the deal.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:00Speaker 1: It kind of forces you to be to work through it, ye, yeah,
- 26:04Speaker 1: which is really good.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Yeah, awesome.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Well you've also did recently. You also did a trip
- 26:10Speaker 1: with Camp Yoshi. Yeah, a couple of them actually. Yeah,
- 26:13Speaker 1: it's going to talk a little bit about who they
- 26:15Speaker 1: are and maybe a little bit about the adventure that
- 26:18Speaker 1: you did.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Yeah. So Camp Yoshi and I two brothers, Ron and Rashad,
- 26:23Speaker 2: and very different brothers.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Where does the Yoshi come from? What is is it
- 26:28Speaker 3: a last name or what?
- 26:28Speaker 2: Did you know? Yoshi? It's Japanese and I forget exactly
- 26:34Speaker 2: what it means. It's something good. Yeah, but you know,
- 26:40Speaker 2: and Ron and Rashad are brothers and very different backgrounds.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Ron is in finance of some sort and Rashad's a
- 26:46Speaker 2: chef that was in finance at one point, and they
- 26:50Speaker 2: started this travel company essentially to open the doors for
- 26:56Speaker 2: people of color. Yeah, and it's something that I'd never
- 26:59Speaker 2: really considered. You know. Generationally, black folks didn't feel comfortable
- 27:06Speaker 2: in the outdoors because it was a dangerous place for them. Sure,
- 27:09Speaker 2: you know, in the in the forties, fifties, sixties, that
- 27:13Speaker 2: was a very dangerous place for a black person to
- 27:15Speaker 2: be sure, it was out in the middle of nowhere.
- 27:17Speaker 2: And we've evolved and we've come to a new time.
- 27:20Speaker 2: But generationally, the guys that are our age, their parents
- 27:25Speaker 2: didn't take them camping, right, you know. And what Ron
- 27:29Speaker 2: and Rashad want to do is they want to open
- 27:31Speaker 2: the outdoors to them, show them that they're welcome there,
- 27:35Speaker 2: show them that there's nothing to be afraid of, that
- 27:38Speaker 2: it's incredible benefits. Yeah, there's really incredible benefits to it,
- 27:42Speaker 2: you know, that it's an incredible place to be. So
- 27:44Speaker 2: they started Camp Yoshi. I was introduced to them on
- 27:48Speaker 2: their second or third trip, their first trip to Moab essentially,
- 27:53Speaker 2: and they wanted to like, how do we do Moab right? Right?
- 27:57Speaker 2: And what really impressed me about them was we don't
- 28:00Speaker 2: know anything about camping in the desert, traveling through the desert.
- 28:03Speaker 2: How do we do it right with minimal impact. We
- 28:06Speaker 2: want to teach our clients the right way to do
- 28:09Speaker 2: this word on the street. And I can't remember how
- 28:12Speaker 2: the word on the street got to them that I
- 28:14Speaker 2: was the right person to ask, sure, but you know,
- 28:17Speaker 2: they reached out and I ended up there and we
- 28:21Speaker 2: had an incredible you know, four or five days there,
- 28:25Speaker 2: and I hooked them up with Nina Barlow, who taught
- 28:27Speaker 2: them about driving and minimal impact. Sure, and I taught
- 28:33Speaker 2: them about you know, minimal impact when you're camping, you know,
- 28:37Speaker 2: about wag bags, about you know, and these guys when
- 28:40Speaker 2: they heard about wag bags, you should have seen their faces.
- 28:43Speaker 2: They were like.
- 28:45Speaker 3: What we're going to do? What you were going to do?
- 28:47Speaker 2: What? But then there was that initial trip with them,
- 28:50Speaker 2: and then I actually came back because I wanted to
- 28:53Speaker 2: see how this was implemented with their clients. Sure, And
- 28:56Speaker 2: when I went back on their first trip, it really
- 29:00Speaker 2: it just really made me proud that here were the
- 29:04Speaker 2: two guys, my my two guys that I taught the
- 29:07Speaker 2: best that I knew how, and then they had I
- 29:10Speaker 2: think it was twelve clients and then their three or
- 29:13Speaker 2: four support staff sure that they were, you know, basically
- 29:18Speaker 2: repeating almost verbatim about cryptobiotic soil, about how to travel
- 29:23Speaker 2: through washes, about sanitary issues. Yeah, and just and then
- 29:29Speaker 2: here were these twelve people that for their first camping trip.
- 29:33Speaker 2: It was I think for those twelve people, ten of
- 29:36Speaker 2: them it was their very first time camping. Wow, you know,
- 29:40Speaker 2: definitely their first time in Moab, and then they were
- 29:42Speaker 2: learning this very low impact way of traveling through the desert.
- 29:46Speaker 2: So from that, you know, they they basically said, well, similar,
- 29:49Speaker 2: how can we do something else? How do we go
- 29:52Speaker 2: to Canyonlands three to zero one? You know, the ap course,
- 29:56Speaker 2: the you know, how do we get our masters? So
- 29:59Speaker 2: we went out and we basically did instead of a
- 30:03Speaker 2: base camp type of thing that they did on their
- 30:06Speaker 2: inaugural trip, we did more of a car camping overland
- 30:11Speaker 2: trip where we went was it three days three or
- 30:14Speaker 2: four days, but you know, we went out and explored
- 30:18Speaker 2: with our friends from Huckburry as well, and we went
- 30:21Speaker 2: out and explored like, Okay, how could we put this
- 30:24Speaker 2: trip together where it's a little spicy with some driving,
- 30:27Speaker 2: amazing topography. I really want to introduce them to the
- 30:34Speaker 2: cultural the ancient pub Blowans that were there previous to us,
- 30:37Speaker 2: So they have a history like this isn't I think
- 30:40Speaker 2: for me? And it comes back to how my perception
- 30:43Speaker 2: of the area. As soon as I realized that the
- 30:46Speaker 2: desert wasn't this wasteland and it had nurtured life for
- 30:50Speaker 2: thousands of years, it made me really tweak my perspective
- 30:54Speaker 2: on the Colorado Plateau.
- 30:56Speaker 1: And you've gone through that process over decades. And I
- 30:59Speaker 1: mean you've traveling the Colorado Plateau for at least twenty.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Years, having just turned fifty it's now thirty years.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Yeah, we both just turned it.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. My first time I'd been mountain biking there
- 31:14Speaker 2: quite a bit, you know, Bob Allen took me down
- 31:16Speaker 2: there for the first time. It's mountain bike. But then
- 31:18Speaker 2: my first time to really get deep was with with
- 31:22Speaker 2: Seldom Seen Smith ok of you know, at Abbey History.
- 31:26Speaker 2: And I'd been I'd been mountain biking up on Poison
- 31:29Speaker 2: Spider and this old jeep, flat fender jeep comes creaking
- 31:34Speaker 2: up behind me and this guy just goes out of
- 31:37Speaker 2: my way, you sprockehead, you know, and I'm like, who
- 31:42Speaker 2: is this guy like whatever, get by, you know. He
- 31:45Speaker 2: cruises by, and a couple of miles down the trail,
- 31:48Speaker 2: he's in a nice shady spot and he's got his
- 31:50Speaker 2: igloo cooler with water out and he's making a baloneyan
- 31:53Speaker 2: mayonnaise sandwich. I ride up and he's like, he goes, oh,
- 31:56Speaker 2: you want to you know, you want a sandwich? You
- 31:58Speaker 2: want to some water? And I'm like, yeah, sure, you know,
- 32:00Speaker 2: shady spot and I'll eat this. We get to chatting,
- 32:04Speaker 2: you know. He finds out I'm from Montana, and he
- 32:06Speaker 2: asked me about Doug Peacock. He goes, well, you must
- 32:08Speaker 2: know Doug Peacock. I go, well, Doug Peacock, who you
- 32:12Speaker 2: know in the book? Is hey, dude, okay you and
- 32:16Speaker 2: Doug Peacock was my creative writing professor. Oh wow recently,
- 32:20Speaker 2: you know. So I tell him this and he's, you know,
- 32:22Speaker 2: eyes light up. He said, of course, you know, Doug.
- 32:24Speaker 2: He goes, well, have you ever been down into canyon lands?
- 32:27Speaker 2: And I got no, What's what's canyon lands? You know?
- 32:30Speaker 2: Like to me, Moab? Was it?
- 32:32Speaker 3: Sure?
- 32:32Speaker 2: You know? Because that was mountain biking and my world
- 32:34Speaker 2: was Moab and I was getting a little bit exploring,
- 32:38Speaker 2: getting you know, out into Jackson Hole, which was towards
- 32:42Speaker 2: canyon lands but not very deep. He goes, oh, it's
- 32:44Speaker 2: you know, the needles, and he's really excited. He's like,
- 32:47Speaker 2: you gotta get you gotta get down there. And he says,
- 32:49Speaker 2: what are you doing the next couple of days. I'm
- 32:50Speaker 2: like nothing, I'm living in my van and Moonflower Canyon
- 32:54Speaker 2: go hang out. So I end up going down to
- 32:58Speaker 2: the Needles District.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Oh wow.
- 33:00Speaker 2: And we go up over Elephant Hill.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Oh wow, in his jeep.
- 33:03Speaker 2: In his jeep. Oh yeah, I mean in his jeep
- 33:06Speaker 2: and we camped it. I think it's Devil's kitchen sure
- 33:09Speaker 2: in there. I still remember it, like, you know, him
- 33:14Speaker 2: telling me about the ringtail cats and watch my food.
- 33:17Speaker 2: And you know, we didn't sleep in tents. We were
- 33:20Speaker 2: just sleeping, you know, out in cowboy camp style. That
- 33:24Speaker 2: to me was the the mind blowing entrance into the
- 33:28Speaker 2: Colorado Plateau.
- 33:29Speaker 1: And it recalibrated probably so many things, Oh yeah, of
- 33:33Speaker 1: how little you need and how simple the vehicle can
- 33:36Speaker 1: be and the setup can be and just get out
- 33:38Speaker 1: and explore.
- 33:39Speaker 2: One hundred percent. And it was you know, it was
- 33:41Speaker 2: the first time that i'd seen, you know, the ancient
- 33:43Speaker 2: Pueblo homes and the ancient Pueblo ridings, pictograss and whatnot,
- 33:48Speaker 2: and it just really blew my mind. It made me
- 33:51Speaker 2: want to come back out here. So with Camp Yoshi,
- 33:54Speaker 2: I wanted to try and recreate that sense of wonder
- 34:00Speaker 2: and astonishment with them sure first, sure, and then let
- 34:06Speaker 2: them recreate it with their clients. So we went out
- 34:08Speaker 2: for three or four days and we wrapped down through
- 34:11Speaker 2: the Bear's Ears. Got pretty remote, you know, And I
- 34:15Speaker 2: think that that's an important part of teaching people how
- 34:19Speaker 2: you know, hey, we can be super remote where you're
- 34:22Speaker 2: seventy miles in each direction, if you're on the highway
- 34:24Speaker 2: to the next gas station. Sure, but you're going to
- 34:27Speaker 2: be all right.
- 34:27Speaker 3: Yeah, give people that confidence.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Yeah. So yeah, we put together a great route for them.
- 34:33Speaker 2: It's ancient Pueblo dwellings, it's pictographs, it's off road, it's
- 34:40Speaker 2: on road, it's your canyons. And they're doing that this
- 34:45Speaker 2: fall in October.
- 34:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:47Speaker 1: What a neat organization. Yeah, and we'll put link in
- 34:49Speaker 1: the show notes to Camp Yoshi.
- 34:52Speaker 3: Cam'p. Yoshi's doing amazing things.
- 34:54Speaker 1: The gathering event that you and I both went to recently,
- 34:57Speaker 1: they're doing amazing things Sonya and Nakota. Yeah, just awesome
- 35:01Speaker 1: stuff that we're seeing happening. And then you did fly
- 35:05Speaker 1: and do the Mexican one thousand, So you got to
- 35:06Speaker 1: talk about that a little bit because that sounds. First
- 35:08Speaker 1: of all, the vehicle you did it in is like
- 35:10Speaker 1: everybody's dream Baja experience.
- 35:14Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean the Mexican one thousand. It's not
- 35:17Speaker 2: the Baja one thousand. You know a lot of people
- 35:19Speaker 2: get Mexican one thousand, Baja one thousand confused. Baja one thousand.
- 35:23Speaker 2: They do it in a day, I think maybe thirty
- 35:26Speaker 2: six hours, but you should have to complete the full
- 35:29Speaker 2: thousand miles, sure, in one shot. The Mexican one thousand
- 35:33Speaker 2: is more of a rally. Sure, you know, you like
- 35:34Speaker 2: a classic car route, classic car rally. You've got five
- 35:37Speaker 2: days to make it from Ensenata to San Jose del Caaba.
- 35:42Speaker 2: I'd been aware of the Mexican one thousand, hadn't really
- 35:45Speaker 2: been interested in it. Early on in my career. I
- 35:48Speaker 2: worked with Mouse McCoy who'd won the Iron Remember that
- 35:51Speaker 2: that was such a great just glory, you know, the
- 35:53Speaker 2: whole thing great. So it was kind of you know,
- 35:55Speaker 2: like my perception of the Baja one thousand and Mexican
- 35:59Speaker 2: one thousand was very motor head like trophy trucks. You
- 36:04Speaker 2: got to have millions of dollars to do this type
- 36:06Speaker 2: of thing. Wasn't really on my radar. It's something that
- 36:09Speaker 2: I was interested in doing. Early twenty twenty two, my
- 36:12Speaker 2: buddy Tim sends me a message. And Tim's a great guy.
- 36:17Speaker 2: I've known him for a long time. I actually knew
- 36:18Speaker 2: him through the motorcycle world. And he sends me a
- 36:21Speaker 2: message and he goes, I just bought a Meyers MANX.
- 36:24Speaker 2: It doesn't have an engine. I'm going to race the
- 36:27Speaker 2: Mexican one thousand. Do you want to do it? And
- 36:29Speaker 2: I'm like, well, it kind of depends on my schedule.
- 36:31Speaker 2: A week's a long time. And at the time, it
- 36:33Speaker 2: wasn't really wasn't something that I wanted to do. Sure,
- 36:37Speaker 2: you know, it wasn't. It wasn't yes, yes exactly, you know.
- 36:40Speaker 2: And that's why I determine a lot of things either yes,
- 36:43Speaker 2: and if it's not a yes'm I'm.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Out there or otherwise it should be a no, yeah
- 36:47Speaker 1: exactly exactly.
- 36:48Speaker 2: And I was a but it was interesting that I
- 36:50Speaker 2: loved Tim, and he's he's a very he does things right,
- 36:55Speaker 2: he does things. So I was interested, but I had
- 36:57Speaker 2: a lot of things going on, you know, and it
- 36:59Speaker 2: kind of depended on putting this trip driving an old
- 37:01Speaker 2: land road. Yeah, that was falling right in there. And
- 37:04Speaker 2: I kept in touch with Tim as He's like, all right,
- 37:06Speaker 2: I got an engine off Craigslist for the for the Manx.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Oh my god, this is.
- 37:11Speaker 3: Never gonna happen. Right, this is.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Never gonna happen. And then my buddy Stefan got involved,
- 37:16Speaker 2: and then my buddy Dustin got involved. They started coming together,
- 37:20Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh this, you know, and I started
- 37:22Speaker 2: getting a little bit of fomo because I was I
- 37:24Speaker 2: was going to Panama right to do this thing. Panama
- 37:27Speaker 2: thing fell through at the time, and I end up
- 37:30Speaker 2: in the Tijuana airport at nine am, you know, drinking takat,
- 37:34Speaker 2: eating Webbos rancheros, waiting on my buddy Stephen to pick
- 37:37Speaker 2: me up, you know, to go ton Snada. It was awesome,
- 37:40Speaker 2: you know. He pulled it off. He built this Myers
- 37:44Speaker 2: Manx with a Volkswagen engine that.
- 37:46Speaker 3: He bought the originally.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, So it was a I don't know if
- 37:50Speaker 2: I'm using the right terminology because I'm not super familiar.
- 37:52Speaker 2: But it's the The Myers MANX is basically a fiberglass
- 37:56Speaker 2: tub that sits on the Oldswagen bug trade chassis. Sure,
- 38:03Speaker 2: you know, because it doesn't have a chassis. It has
- 38:05Speaker 2: a kind of it's kind of you know, it's one
- 38:08Speaker 2: of the first unibodies. Yeah, and it sits on that
- 38:10Speaker 2: so it has the little Volkswagen engine in the back,
- 38:13Speaker 2: and you know, it's about it's the little dune buggy,
- 38:17Speaker 2: you know. You know, we had such a good time.
- 38:20Speaker 2: I mean, and that thing only goes fifty sixty miles
- 38:24Speaker 2: an hour, not that best, you know. But what the
- 38:27Speaker 2: Mexican one thousand did was they hooked up with this
- 38:29Speaker 2: guy Michael from Slow Baja and I forget his last name.
- 38:33Speaker 2: I've heard about them. Yeah, he's a he's a really
- 38:35Speaker 2: nice guy. He he drives an old FJ forty. And
- 38:39Speaker 2: they created the Safari class. It's just this class that
- 38:44Speaker 2: is all about vintage, all about cruising. You know, you're
- 38:48Speaker 2: not racing those The trophy trucks are there, right and
- 38:51Speaker 2: the you know, the big bikes, you know, the rally
- 38:54Speaker 2: bikes are there. The big enduro's are there, sure, and
- 38:57Speaker 2: all the all the things are there. But then in
- 38:58Speaker 2: Safari class, you're just kind of cruising, like you're just
- 39:02Speaker 2: cruising along having fun. You stop at the pits, you
- 39:05Speaker 2: have some beers, you have some savicha, you get it
- 39:07Speaker 2: to Molly from the lady down the road, and you
- 39:10Speaker 2: work your way down, you know, the peninsula.
- 39:12Speaker 1: So it's kind of it's kind of like you're racing
- 39:15Speaker 1: to a degree because you're having some fun with a
- 39:17Speaker 1: little bit of speed, but then you're experiencing the whole place.
- 39:20Speaker 2: You're experiencing the whole place, and it's not a race though,
- 39:23Speaker 2: it's a rally, you know. And I think some people,
- 39:27Speaker 2: there's definitely the people that take it more seriously than others.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Sure we weren't that sure, you know, like we were
- 39:34Speaker 2: just we were so stoked that we made it to
- 39:37Speaker 2: the finish every day, sure, you know. And then it
- 39:40Speaker 2: was getting it back to where you could start in
- 39:43Speaker 2: the morning, you know, figuring out why we were burning
- 39:46Speaker 2: a quart of oil every half hour, you know, that
- 39:49Speaker 2: type of thing. But it was just super fun to
- 39:52Speaker 2: you know, to the point where I was like, all right,
- 39:54Speaker 2: I'm definitely I'm I'm on board again for twenty twenty three,
- 39:58Speaker 2: you know, and you're going.
- 39:59Speaker 3: To do it.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, We'll make sure we throw a
- 40:02Speaker 1: couple photos of that into the show.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Notes.
- 40:06Speaker 3: That's so great.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Well, I want to I want to pivot a little bit.
- 40:09Speaker 1: One of the things that so many people that listen
- 40:12Speaker 1: to the podcast know you for is your creative work
- 40:17Speaker 1: and the quality of the creative work that you do.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Also that you tie a lot of that in with
- 40:22Speaker 1: the passion that we all have for overlanding.
- 40:24Speaker 2: So let's talk a little bit about your art.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Recently, you had an art exhibit in Mexico City.
- 40:31Speaker 2: Let's talk a little bit about that. Yeah, so it
- 40:33Speaker 2: was my first gallery show. It all came about because
- 40:37Speaker 2: in the early days of the pandemic. I take that back.
- 40:40Speaker 2: It wasn't the early days of the pandemic. It was after,
- 40:43Speaker 2: you know, we're into the pandemic. Sure, sure I was.
- 40:46Speaker 2: I was driving back and forth from Colorado to La
- 40:50Speaker 2: to see my son. Sure, I never take the same route,
- 40:53Speaker 2: and I'm always kind of looking for something new, and
- 40:57Speaker 2: I started coming across you know, I'd always kind of
- 41:02Speaker 2: blown through it. But these areas of you know, there's
- 41:06Speaker 2: the the salt mines, the bor axe mines, these different topographies.
- 41:12Speaker 2: This one time, I just kind of threw up the drone,
- 41:14Speaker 2: you know, it was bored threw up the drone and
- 41:17Speaker 2: you know, looking down, yeah, it looked like a medical
- 41:23Speaker 2: cross section of epidermis, you know, like I was just
- 41:28Speaker 2: kind of going, what is why? Why is it purple
- 41:32Speaker 2: and red and green? And you know, it made me
- 41:35Speaker 2: kind of take into consideration. The one in particular was
- 41:38Speaker 2: a boraxe mine where they pumped water underground to get
- 41:43Speaker 2: rid of it basically, but then they'd pumped so much
- 41:46Speaker 2: that it had created its own volcano. And that's why
- 41:51Speaker 2: we got all these crazy colors of copper and sure
- 41:54Speaker 2: and purple and whatnot. And it made me just kind
- 41:57Speaker 2: of think of, you know, why we were were you know,
- 42:01Speaker 2: kind of doing this, Like what benefit is this? And
- 42:04Speaker 2: we're in a constant state of evolution on this planet,
- 42:07Speaker 2: you know, for better or worse, and I'm not things
- 42:10Speaker 2: are always changing, things are always changing, and I'm not
- 42:12Speaker 2: you know, smart enough to decide whether it's better or worse.
- 42:14Speaker 2: It's you know, everything's for now. So it made me
- 42:18Speaker 2: kind of go on this mission whenever. It gave me
- 42:21Speaker 2: a purpose beyond just going home. Or going to see
- 42:24Speaker 2: my son seek out these these landscapes that we're in
- 42:27Speaker 2: a state of change, you know, that were maybe being
- 42:32Speaker 2: changed quicker because of of the mining operations and you
- 42:36Speaker 2: know whatever. But they were beautiful, sure, you know, and
- 42:39Speaker 2: I just wanted to shoot them. So we had this
- 42:41Speaker 2: this gallery show at my gallery and in Mexico City
- 42:44Speaker 2: called Loot and the photos we l o O T
- 42:50Speaker 2: got it and I believe the website's l o o
- 42:53Speaker 2: T dot MX got it. And you know, the photos
- 42:57Speaker 2: we printed them there and we did them you know,
- 43:00Speaker 2: six feet wide, just huge. It was a great experience
- 43:05Speaker 2: to have my first gallery show there. Yeah, awesome.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Yeah, those photos were beautiful and they were in Overland
- 43:11Speaker 1: Journal not that long ago.
- 43:13Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right latitude.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Full latitude section, Yeah, which is very cool. And then
- 43:17Speaker 2: can people see a few of those images on your website?
- 43:20Speaker 2: They're not on my website, but I let's put a
- 43:23Speaker 2: gallery up so we can have it in the show notes.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Put a couple couple of examples so people can kind
- 43:28Speaker 1: of see it because they are super impressive. It's just
- 43:31Speaker 1: such an interesting way to look at humans impact on
- 43:36Speaker 1: the environment. When I shoot the environment, I always think
- 43:38Speaker 1: about the big beautiful mountain or the carved canyon or
- 43:41Speaker 1: the erosion or something like that. But to also capture
- 43:44Speaker 1: those other influences is pretty interesting. Yeah, And like I said,
- 43:48Speaker 1: I don't know if it's it's good or bad because
- 43:50Speaker 1: it just is it. The salt and the borax, they're
- 43:53Speaker 1: they're natural, sure, you know, and it's just the way
- 43:56Speaker 1: that they develop it, I suppose.
- 43:59Speaker 3: And then you did.
- 44:01Speaker 1: I mean, it's something that people got to check out.
- 44:03Speaker 1: We'll put it in the show notes as well because
- 44:05Speaker 1: it's so great. But you did this project with Hodinki
- 44:08Speaker 1: where you were down where you were in Costa Rica
- 44:11Speaker 1: or Panama, Where were you at where you were shooting
- 44:13Speaker 1: all that with the motorcycle and the airplane.
- 44:15Speaker 2: We did a a my friend Gray reached out to me,
- 44:19Speaker 2: and Gray i'd worked. I'd met him in Portugal quite
- 44:23Speaker 2: a few years back, and he reached out to me
- 44:25Speaker 2: about doing a project with Hamilton and Hodinky. Hamilton is
- 44:30Speaker 2: a great watch watchmaker and they've they've done really amazing.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Excellent field watches. Yeah, I feel really practical, well.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Made exactly, and you know, wanted to know if I
- 44:42Speaker 2: wanted to do a project for him. I was like, yeah,
- 44:44Speaker 2: let's let's do it. And we went to my friend's
- 44:47Speaker 2: place in Ziewat Naho called Musa the Modern Utopian Society
- 44:51Speaker 2: of Adventures and it's it's an incredible place south of
- 44:56Speaker 2: Ziewat Naho and as far as the location of film,
- 45:00Speaker 2: and ride motorcycle and fly planes and drive jeeps. Sure,
- 45:05Speaker 2: it was really fun. We were there during the rainy season.
- 45:07Speaker 2: It was right smacked out July, but we lucked out
- 45:11Speaker 2: with great weather where we were able to My friend Jonathan,
- 45:14Speaker 2: who's Canadian lives in Mexico City, has this incredible plane
- 45:19Speaker 2: and we flew in from Mexico City and then shot
- 45:22Speaker 2: on the beach with motorcycles and planes.
- 45:24Speaker 1: That one shot of you on a dirt bike with
- 45:29Speaker 1: the plane coming in behind you. I mean that was
- 45:31Speaker 1: like right out of a James Wand film. I'm like,
- 45:33Speaker 1: my friend is really fricking cool.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Well, you know, I have to see it's so good.
- 45:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it's great, it's really fun.
- 45:40Speaker 2: I have to say that I have a friend Victoria Casanova,
- 45:43Speaker 2: who lives in Ziwat Najo and Los Angeles, and we
- 45:46Speaker 2: were down in Musa. She was the one that said,
- 45:51Speaker 2: I really want to get a small plane down here
- 45:54Speaker 2: and she was just learning how to ride a motorcycle,
- 45:56Speaker 2: and she's like, how cool would it be to be
- 45:58Speaker 2: just riding down the beach in a plane come flying
- 46:01Speaker 2: by you, you know, And that was kind of the
- 46:04Speaker 2: idea Jonathan. Down there, it looks so yeah, looks so fun.
- 46:08Speaker 2: It's super cool. Yeah, I mean, it's so well shot.
- 46:10Speaker 2: It's literally it looks like it's right out of a
- 46:12Speaker 2: James Bond film.
- 46:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it was.
- 46:14Speaker 2: It was really fun. And that's you know, that's part
- 46:15Speaker 2: of the fun of where I am in my career
- 46:18Speaker 2: now is the advertising and commercial world is realized that
- 46:21Speaker 2: there's real value in the authenticity of sure of telling
- 46:27Speaker 2: these stories, you know, and going out and having having
- 46:30Speaker 2: fun with it, not trying to create some hokey bourgeois thing.
- 46:34Speaker 2: It didn't look hokey. Look it looked cool as hell. Yeah.
- 46:37Speaker 3: Nice work on that.
- 46:38Speaker 1: So we got we got a little bit more time,
- 46:41Speaker 1: but we got to talk about one of the more
- 46:42Speaker 1: interesting things it's new as far as gear and stuff
- 46:46Speaker 1: for you, is you have you've pretty much been a
- 46:49Speaker 1: land rover guy since your first Discovery one manual transmission truck,
- 46:53Speaker 1: and you recently bought a new vehicle. So let's talk
- 46:57Speaker 1: about how you went from range rover mark that had
- 47:00Speaker 1: been serving you well to what you're driving now.
- 47:03Speaker 2: I think to get to where we are now, we
- 47:05Speaker 2: need to back up a little bit.
- 47:07Speaker 3: Let's do Let's back up as far as you want.
- 47:09Speaker 2: What year was that that we did speed Channel? Is
- 47:12Speaker 2: that two thousand and eight? Two thousand? I think it
- 47:14Speaker 2: probably was, Yeah, somewhere nine, Yeah, somewhere in there.
- 47:17Speaker 1: Was it The Deadliest Roads or something like that, something
- 47:21Speaker 1: like that was ridiculous, dangerous, dangerous drives.
- 47:23Speaker 2: You contacted me about putting a route together. Yep, for
- 47:27Speaker 2: those guys. You know, we went to Moab in November
- 47:31Speaker 2: and it snowed thirty inches. Yeah, just nuked. And I
- 47:34Speaker 2: met Dave Harrington, ye, you know, for the first time.
- 47:37Speaker 2: And Dave is the founder of AEV and he had
- 47:41Speaker 2: a brute there and a couple of jeeps jjk's yeah,
- 47:46Speaker 2: I mean with just built, I mean super sweet. And
- 47:49Speaker 2: I had my discovery. You know, we did this trip
- 47:52Speaker 2: and by the end of the trip, I was missing
- 47:54Speaker 2: a headlight out of the Discovery, but it kept up
- 47:57Speaker 2: with the.
- 47:57Speaker 1: AEVs even in that really deep snow. I remember you,
- 48:01Speaker 1: you're looking at me like Scott, there's no way. I'm like,
- 48:03Speaker 1: just keep We're just going to keep airing down until
- 48:05Speaker 1: there's almost no air left at tire.
- 48:07Speaker 2: And it worked, It worked, it worked, and we got through.
- 48:10Speaker 2: And I've always you know, Dave is such a great guy.
- 48:12Speaker 2: He's so smart, he's such a talented designer, businessman. Yeah,
- 48:15Speaker 2: he's just a great guy. And I'd always appreciated his
- 48:19Speaker 2: product the way he does it. But I've never you know,
- 48:23Speaker 2: I've never really strayed from land Rover for whatever reason.
- 48:27Speaker 2: And Dave has been very generous with letting me drive
- 48:30Speaker 2: a brute, letting me drive you know jks. Whenever I
- 48:34Speaker 2: needed a truck, he'd let me drive it.
- 48:35Speaker 3: It was the Gateway drug, it was the gate I know.
- 48:37Speaker 2: He was like, give you to him, give it to
- 48:39Speaker 2: him for free. Then he was using a little bit
- 48:42Speaker 2: of that hood economics no Dummy, which is pretty good
- 48:47Speaker 2: for a Montana boy. So, you know, yeah, fast forward
- 48:51Speaker 2: to I've recently started using First it was a Ford
- 48:56Speaker 2: Ranger that t JM Out of Australia had built and
- 49:01Speaker 2: I use that with with my son on a spring
- 49:03Speaker 2: break trip, and I really liked the platform of a
- 49:08Speaker 2: truck with a rack on it and the rooftop ten
- 49:10Speaker 2: on top. And if anybody that knows me knows, like
- 49:14Speaker 2: I'm not a fan of rooftop tens, right, I've never
- 49:17Speaker 2: have been. I hate finding a flat parking spot. Generally
- 49:21Speaker 2: I'll sleep outside camp Cowboy Camp. Not into it. My son, however,
- 49:26Speaker 2: loves them.
- 49:27Speaker 3: Yeah, they're tree.
- 49:27Speaker 2: It's a tree for he just he's transformed. He's into it. Basically,
- 49:35Speaker 2: what I've learned ever since having a kid is I've
- 49:37Speaker 2: lived my life. Now I'm going to do everything I
- 49:40Speaker 2: can to make his life as awesome as it can exactly.
- 49:44Speaker 2: So we had this trip. I had the rooftop ten.
- 49:46Speaker 2: He really loved it. I started thinking about that platform.
- 49:49Speaker 2: And this was probably four years ago. It was a
- 49:51Speaker 2: pickup truck. You were in a Rangers. It was a Ranger,
- 49:53Speaker 2: it was a it was a four range, great truck,
- 49:56Speaker 2: really great truck. And the TGM stuff was the way
- 49:59Speaker 2: they have. It was very thoroughfully built out, and it
- 50:03Speaker 2: was kind of on the back of my mind. And
- 50:04Speaker 2: then I, did you know the Camp Yoshi project? Yeah,
- 50:08Speaker 2: and I had the Gladiator way out their concept vehicle.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Sure that Scott Brown sent me same deal. Rooftop ten
- 50:15Speaker 2: on the back had the decked system in the back.
- 50:19Speaker 2: It's kind of percolating. So I started thinking, like, what
- 50:23Speaker 2: what is it that I need out of a truck.
- 50:25Speaker 2: And the problem with both the Ford Ranger and the
- 50:29Speaker 2: Gladiator was the range, the gas mileage. I just couldn't
- 50:33Speaker 2: I couldn't fathom driving those either of those because you know,
- 50:38Speaker 2: you get too remote. Yeah I did get long long trips. Yeah,
- 50:42Speaker 2: I have long trips. I don't like carrying fuel. I don't.
- 50:45Speaker 2: You know, It's like I try and keep it as
- 50:46Speaker 2: simple as possible. And you know, in a conversation with
- 50:49Speaker 2: Dave Harrington, he was like, have you checked out the
- 50:52Speaker 2: diesel the Duramax Colorado. He wasn't even he didn't even
- 50:56Speaker 2: mention av. He was like, Bison. I didn't know about
- 50:58Speaker 2: the Bison, but you know I checked it out and
- 51:01Speaker 2: it kind of checked a lot of boxes, a lot
- 51:03Speaker 2: of boxes, and then yeah, it was our mid size
- 51:07Speaker 2: truck of the year a few years ago. Yeah. So
- 51:10Speaker 2: the the Bison, the way that Dave has outfitted it
- 51:14Speaker 2: and designed it really worked. You know. So late last
- 51:18Speaker 2: year I picked one up because they're not making the
- 51:22Speaker 2: diesel anymore. It's it's really gonna serve the purpose.
- 51:27Speaker 1: I think. You know, as far as what I said,
- 51:30Speaker 1: you were getting mid per gallon. Oh yeah, over five
- 51:33Speaker 1: hundred mile range in.
- 51:34Speaker 2: The yeah, over five hundred mile range, you know, twenty
- 51:38Speaker 2: four to twenty six miles to the gallon. Sure, it's
- 51:41Speaker 2: been winter and we've had a heck of a winner.
- 51:43Speaker 2: As we all know, there hasn't been a lot of opportunity,
- 51:45Speaker 2: but some I've done some stuff in and around Utah.
- 51:48Speaker 2: It still gets high teens off road, which I'll take
- 51:52Speaker 2: all day long. So yeah, it's I'm really excited. We've
- 51:55Speaker 2: been here in Prescott the last few days kind of
- 51:58Speaker 2: figuring things out with stage one. Yeah, stage one and
- 52:03Speaker 2: super minimal, I don't need a lot. I really liked
- 52:06Speaker 2: the deck system that I found on the Gladiator, the
- 52:08Speaker 2: fact that you can have that organized storage that's secure
- 52:12Speaker 2: and water proof. I also came across the light I
- 52:16Speaker 2: believe a lightner rack system. I vacillated a lot on
- 52:21Speaker 2: whether I wanted to go with a camper top like
- 52:23Speaker 2: a Super Pacific or a GFC or an at Overland.
- 52:26Speaker 2: The thing that kind of kept me with the open
- 52:30Speaker 2: with the rooftop tent system is I've never dealt with
- 52:33Speaker 2: a camper system that didn't keep dust out. Sure, so
- 52:36Speaker 2: if I'm gonna if I know I'm gonna get dust
- 52:38Speaker 2: in there, I might as well just let it fly.
- 52:42Speaker 2: And I don't I don't know. It may change well
- 52:45Speaker 2: for sure.
- 52:45Speaker 1: And the configuration you've got now you still have a truck,
- 52:48Speaker 1: Yeah you can, you can haul motorcycles around, you can
- 52:50Speaker 1: go to you can go to home depot and yeah,
- 52:53Speaker 1: you can get you can use it as a truck.
- 52:54Speaker 1: You can go to home depot, you can haul your motorcycle.
- 52:57Speaker 1: You can you know, bring home a new washirt like
- 53:00Speaker 1: you can use a truck as a truck, which I
- 53:02Speaker 1: think is kind of nice. So I do like that
- 53:04Speaker 1: little more open bed configure it exactly.
- 53:06Speaker 2: This is this is new to me. I've always been
- 53:09Speaker 2: and you know, a fully enclosed suv, and so I'm
- 53:13Speaker 2: going to let it kind of evolve. I'm not I'm
- 53:17Speaker 2: going to keep it very because part of what I've
- 53:20Speaker 2: learned over the years is the more complicated the systems get,
- 53:25Speaker 2: the more chance you have to have to fix it
- 53:28Speaker 2: in the field or just be distracted.
- 53:30Speaker 3: From the reason why you're going out.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Exactly. Yeah, and spend time with my kid, you know,
- 53:34Speaker 2: that's what it's about. And I don't want to as
- 53:36Speaker 2: much fun as he has sort and bolts. I don't
- 53:39Speaker 2: want to be doing that in the middle of nowhere.
- 53:42Speaker 3: And then you put a tent on top of it.
- 53:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I did put a tent on top of it. Valuecab, Yeah, yeah,
- 53:47Speaker 2: it's an Alucab. To me, I had my choice of
- 53:50Speaker 2: quite a few, and looking at the Alucab, it was
- 53:53Speaker 2: the most durable and when I'm not yeah, it looks bomber,
- 53:57Speaker 2: and I've heard nothing but good things about them.
- 54:00Speaker 1: Again, it has the ability to run some accessory rails
- 54:03Speaker 1: on top, so you could put your mountain bikes up there,
- 54:06Speaker 1: you know that firewood.
- 54:07Speaker 2: As you know, like whatever kind of weird sport I
- 54:10Speaker 2: want to do, I could put it, but I don't
- 54:12Speaker 2: want to go any higher than it already is. Yeah,
- 54:15Speaker 2: and again it's going to be pretty minimal. But the
- 54:17Speaker 2: alue Cab to me, like it's one of the beefiest.
- 54:21Speaker 2: It is for ones out there and I tend to Again,
- 54:25Speaker 2: one of the reasons, and I didn't touch on this earlier,
- 54:27Speaker 2: is one of the reasons I went. I never even
- 54:30Speaker 2: looked at full size. I did look at the power
- 54:32Speaker 2: Wagon for a bit, and once I drove the power Wagon,
- 54:35Speaker 2: it was way too big for what It's an incredible vehicle,
- 54:38Speaker 2: but way too big for what I the places I.
- 54:41Speaker 3: Like to go.
- 54:41Speaker 2: And back to the fuel economy. Yeah, and the fuel economy.
- 54:44Speaker 2: So this mid size Jesus.
- 54:46Speaker 1: Truck, it's twice the fuel economy of a exact power Wagon.
- 54:50Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. So this mid size really knocks it out
- 54:54Speaker 2: of the park for me, and being you know, small
- 54:56Speaker 2: and compact and having the the Alu cab being as
- 55:01Speaker 2: beefy as it is, it's not going to get torn
- 55:03Speaker 2: up by branches or anything and that sort of thing.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Yeah, so you've got to looks like a z R
- 55:08Speaker 1: two Bison. Gives you rear locker, front locker, multimatic suspensions,
- 55:13Speaker 1: got a bunch of AEV goodies on it, AEV bumper.
- 55:16Speaker 1: You're getting ready to put a winch on it.
- 55:18Speaker 2: Yep. You're gonna be ready because you always do so
- 55:20Speaker 2: much solo travel that you need to be very self sufficient,
- 55:25Speaker 2: including getting unstuck. Yep. It's interesting because Caleb from Adventure
- 55:31Speaker 2: Imports has been helping me with this truck over the
- 55:35Speaker 2: last few days, and he was lamenting that he can't
- 55:37Speaker 2: find people to go out with. Sure, you know, just
- 55:41Speaker 2: go by yourself, don't ever let that hold you back.
- 55:43Speaker 2: And you're going to realize that going by yourself, you
- 55:46Speaker 2: don't have to worry about anybody else's agenda, you don't
- 55:49Speaker 2: have to worry about how anybody else feels. You just
- 55:51Speaker 2: go and you get to learn a lot about yourself. Yeah, exactly.
- 55:55Speaker 2: And for me, you know, it's I don't want to
- 55:58Speaker 2: you know, my schedule is so wonky with my career
- 56:00Speaker 2: and my son, and if I have the opportunity to
- 56:02Speaker 2: get out there, I want to be out there and
- 56:04Speaker 2: I want to be self sufficient. And having a winch
- 56:07Speaker 2: is definitely one of those things that gives you the
- 56:10Speaker 2: confidence that it makes so much.
- 56:11Speaker 1: Yes, I can get out of here. And you like
- 56:14Speaker 1: to really go into rugged, remote places. Yeah, well that is.
- 56:18Speaker 1: It's the truck looks great. We'll throw a photo up
- 56:21Speaker 1: and you're just getting started. It's going to be featured
- 56:23Speaker 1: in Overland Journal and Expedition Portal, and we'll end up
- 56:26Speaker 1: doing a wrap up video. We'll do a bunch of
- 56:27Speaker 1: great things on it so people can follow along with
- 56:30Speaker 1: your with your new project. Pretty amazing that you strayed
- 56:34Speaker 1: from land Rover. But if you're going to do it,
- 56:36Speaker 1: that's the vehicle to do it with, a diesel mid
- 56:39Speaker 1: size truck. Yeah awesome, ab.
- 56:42Speaker 3: I think so.
- 56:43Speaker 2: I mean the fact that someone of Dave from aev's
- 56:49Speaker 2: caliber has given it its blessing. Sure, there's not a
- 56:52Speaker 2: whole lot of other people in this space that I
- 56:54Speaker 2: respect as much as Dave, so no doubt. Yeah, it's
- 56:57Speaker 2: the one to go with. So anyway, thanks so much.
- 57:00Speaker 1: Any But let's talk about how people find out more
- 57:02Speaker 1: about you. What's your your social media, your website? How
- 57:06Speaker 1: do people follow you and engage with your content?
- 57:11Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 57:11Speaker 2: So, any I mean Instagram is Sinway Xavier. All of
- 57:16Speaker 2: my socials are Sinway Xavier. My website Sineway Xavier. Type
- 57:19Speaker 2: in my name, you can, you know, google me whatever
- 57:22Speaker 2: it takes. I'm out there.
- 57:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:25Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, it's been so fun to have you on.
- 57:28Speaker 1: Is there anything that else that you want to talk about,
- 57:30Speaker 1: Anything that you'd like to share with the audience, or
- 57:33Speaker 1: some recent insights or things that you've learned that you
- 57:36Speaker 1: wanted to share.
- 57:37Speaker 2: You know, I not not really, I've had such a
- 57:42Speaker 2: you know, great time over the last couple of years
- 57:45Speaker 2: coming out of the pandemic and getting back to just
- 57:49Speaker 2: letting the letting the universe suggest sure lay its suggestions out,
- 57:56Speaker 2: and being in tune to those suggestions and following them around,
- 57:59Speaker 2: you know, ending up as kind of everything we talked about. Yeah,
- 58:04Speaker 2: you know, the Camp Yoshi thing was a little suggestion,
- 58:07Speaker 2: the trip through Central America was a little suggestion, and
- 58:11Speaker 2: you know, being open to that stuff and not being
- 58:13Speaker 2: locked into what I think is the the path.
- 58:17Speaker 1: Yeah, you know you've been saying yes to the hell
- 58:20Speaker 1: yes is and a lot of no's to other things.
- 58:23Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, that's good. Exactly.
- 58:26Speaker 1: Sinway, It's always such a joy to have you on
- 58:28Speaker 1: the podcast. Thanks for being a great friend and for
- 58:32Speaker 1: bouncing around the world with me all these years. And
- 58:35Speaker 1: we look forward to having you back on the podcast.
- 58:37Speaker 1: And we thank you all for listening, and we'll talk
- 58:39Speaker 1: to you next time.
