Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello.
- 0:00Speaker 2: My name is Bailey s Finn and I'm a rock
- 0:02Speaker 2: musician from Los Angeles, California. I've released an EP and
- 0:07Speaker 2: album in the past, a lot of rock music, and
- 0:09Speaker 2: I'm about to drop Voodoo, which is a single about
- 0:13Speaker 2: people having a little bit of a parasocial relationship with
- 0:16Speaker 2: you online, whether it be.
- 0:18Speaker 1: An ex or an old friend.
- 0:20Speaker 2: There may be stalking your page and are inspired by
- 0:23Speaker 2: what you do and you know, freaks you out a
- 0:25Speaker 2: little bit, and you don't want them to be watching
- 0:28Speaker 2: you and you're not.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Going to like them because of that.
- 0:30Speaker 2: So it's really kind of talking about those people and
- 0:34Speaker 2: standing your ground.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Very nice, Botty, thanks very much for joining us today.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Yeah, of course, thanks for having me my pleasure.
- 0:42Speaker 4: So, as you mentioned, you released you a new single, Voodoo,
- 0:45Speaker 4: this Friday, May the fifteenth, So how you feel about it.
- 0:50Speaker 1: I'm excited.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I haven't had a drop in a while, so I'm
- 0:53Speaker 2: really excited to release Voodoo and give the fans something
- 0:56Speaker 2: new to listen to because I love Homicide, but I
- 0:58Speaker 2: love Voodoo justin much.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I'm really excited.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Yeah, can you tell us a bit more about the
- 1:03Speaker 4: song from a musical point of view and what you
- 1:05Speaker 4: were gone forward with it.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I definitely like to do a little bit of metalcore.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I like to get as close as a metal song
- 1:14Speaker 2: as I can, But I also don't know how to
- 1:17Speaker 2: fry scream, so I love to teeter on the line
- 1:20Speaker 2: of how far can I go without fry screaming. So
- 1:23Speaker 2: there's a really heavier breakdown bit as I love to do,
- 1:27Speaker 2: and I really wanted to do something dark and a
- 1:29Speaker 2: little bit scary. A lot of my imagery for the
- 1:32Speaker 2: song was haunted and a bit scary, kind of based
- 1:35Speaker 2: around a voodoo doll, very heavy. It comes in with
- 1:39Speaker 2: some like creepy baby crimp kind of sounds, just to
- 1:44Speaker 2: really set the scene of the song being dark and
- 1:48Speaker 2: about like the scary people who are watching you a
- 1:51Speaker 2: little bit too closely.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I when I did to feel eerie.
- 1:54Speaker 4: And it follows on from Pretty Cool that came out
- 1:58Speaker 4: light last year and Homosong from Ellie this year, and
- 2:01Speaker 4: it seems even more of a shift away from your
- 2:03Speaker 4: earlier punks down into the darka heavier as you say, mate,
- 2:07Speaker 4: was that a.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Conscious shift for you or did it just sort of
- 2:09Speaker 3: more happen naturally.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I think it definitely was a conscious shift.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I had tried to put some heavier songs on the
- 2:17Speaker 2: past album and they.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Didn't really feel fit to me at the time.
- 2:20Speaker 2: And when I was writing the news stuff, I kept
- 2:24Speaker 2: trying to do the pop rock.
- 2:25Speaker 1: And it just wasn't sitting with me as much as
- 2:28Speaker 1: it used to.
- 2:28Speaker 2: And I had been really diving into listening to heavier
- 2:31Speaker 2: music and going to a lot of heavier festivals myself,
- 2:34Speaker 2: and what I was inspired by was very different from
- 2:38Speaker 2: what I started out being inspired by, Like Avri Lavine
- 2:41Speaker 2: and Paramore had moved to Bring Me the Horizon, Pierce
- 2:45Speaker 2: the Veil and Motionless and White and started veering heavy
- 2:49Speaker 2: like poppy. So I decided I wanted to try heavier
- 2:53Speaker 2: and I loved it the first song, like it just
- 2:55Speaker 2: felt right.
- 2:56Speaker 1: When I did it, I was like, I think this
- 2:57Speaker 1: is the right step for me.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:59Speaker 4: No, And there's gonna there's bound to be people saying, like,
- 3:02Speaker 4: what the hell is Bailey spin doing on the cover
- 3:04Speaker 4: of Heavy magazine.
- 3:05Speaker 3: But to those people, they should go and listen to.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Homicide and listen to the breakdown about three quarters of
- 3:10Speaker 4: the way through it, because it's a heavier breakdown than
- 3:13Speaker 4: most heavy metal bands I'm known have ever done. Mate,
- 3:16Speaker 4: So where does that come from? Like during that style
- 3:19Speaker 4: of musy, then all of a sudden, bang you're into
- 3:21Speaker 4: a breakdown like that.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I just love it.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I love the duality of a breakdown, and that's usually
- 3:28Speaker 2: what I mean of trying to get as close to
- 3:31Speaker 2: a fully metal song as I can while still having
- 3:33Speaker 2: the beautiful kind of pop vocals, and I like them
- 3:36Speaker 2: to be a little bit pretty and scary. But I
- 3:40Speaker 2: just love those elements of like a heavy breakdown, and
- 3:43Speaker 2: I love headbanging. It's a really fun song to perform live,
- 3:46Speaker 2: especially during that breakdown, because it's just kind of like
- 3:48Speaker 2: a freeing moment.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of the themes in Homicide.
- 3:51Speaker 2: It feels a little bit crazy, you know, very much
- 3:54Speaker 2: like Jennifer's Body, old movies of horror, like Obsessed with Somebody.
- 3:59Speaker 2: So I wanted it to be a little bit scary
- 4:02Speaker 2: and throw people for a loop, like you're kind of
- 4:04Speaker 2: losing your mind a little bit.
- 4:08Speaker 3: If you've got a massive fan base.
- 4:09Speaker 4: But a lot of them are the younger sort of
- 4:11Speaker 4: generation that started with you from your poppy, punky sort
- 4:14Speaker 4: of stuff, right, are you afraid that a few of
- 4:16Speaker 4: them might be a little bit confused or relenited by
- 4:19Speaker 4: the new direction.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I definitely had that feeling that some people weren't going
- 4:24Speaker 2: to understand the new songs and how heavy they were getting,
- 4:28Speaker 2: because I started off very soft. It was comparable to
- 4:31Speaker 2: like Avril Lavine and Olivia Rodrigo and I started dropping
- 4:36Speaker 2: some metal songs, but they were shockingly really accepting of it,
- 4:40Speaker 2: especially Homicide.
- 4:42Speaker 1: People have been loving Homicide and it's even been.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Reaching new people, which is great and what I always
- 4:47Speaker 2: want to do. And a lot of both the audiences
- 4:50Speaker 2: and new people and the old younger listeners loved it
- 4:54Speaker 2: because it kind of gave you a little bit of
- 4:56Speaker 2: both of the pretty vocal, heavy imagery and then also
- 5:00Speaker 2: you get a crazy fun breakdown, so it was a
- 5:03Speaker 2: little bit of everything. And I was shocked and happily
- 5:05Speaker 2: surprised that people really liked that song because I loved
- 5:08Speaker 2: it too.
- 5:09Speaker 4: And I'll think you also, it's like it's a perfect
- 5:11Speaker 4: segue for children to get into the rock and the
- 5:14Speaker 4: hard rock music. Like like I know, I can only
- 5:16Speaker 4: speak from experience from my daughter's hates my love them.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Every time I put it on, they run to the dells.
- 5:20Speaker 3: But through music rules, it's sort of going through.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Those different stages, like it shows them that there is
- 5:26Speaker 4: more to music than just that element. So on behalf
- 5:29Speaker 4: of dads everywhere, middle dands everywhere trying to get their
- 5:32Speaker 4: kids to like music.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I thank you, of course, thank you. You're the ones
- 5:38Speaker 1: bringing them to the shows. I love it.
- 5:41Speaker 4: So Voodoo, Homicide and Pretty Ill part of a bigger
- 5:45Speaker 4: album picture or they just stand alone singles for now.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Currently they're by themselves, but they're definitely going to be
- 5:53Speaker 2: a part of something once it's released in the future.
- 5:56Speaker 1: We're still a little up in there.
- 5:58Speaker 2: There's no official of an hour, but I always like
- 6:01Speaker 2: people to know that I am working on a bigger project.
- 6:03Speaker 2: So they're kind of by themselves right now, and they're
- 6:05Speaker 2: gonna be all together on a fun project coming quite soon.
- 6:10Speaker 2: I'd say this summer. I have no set date, but
- 6:13Speaker 2: it's definitely gonna happen, and then the.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Rest of the song is gonna continue down that path
- 6:18Speaker 4: or you're gonna mix it up a little bit.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I would say they're all along pretty similar lines. If anything,
- 6:25Speaker 2: they get even heavier than some of the stuff I've released.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I really go for the more pop vocal songs as singles.
- 6:33Speaker 2: The things that are a little bit catchier and are
- 6:35Speaker 2: easy to put, you know, on the internet sometimes, so
- 6:38Speaker 2: I think they can expect even crazier on the album.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I've been kind of gate keeping the crazy ones.
- 6:46Speaker 4: I saw the video of you doing some flylea song
- 6:49Speaker 4: as well, like you can now her voice really well too,
- 6:53Speaker 4: so I'm excited to hear where the rest of us
- 6:54Speaker 4: going to thank you.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely some Flyle vibes on there. I'm obsessed with,
- 6:59Speaker 2: honestly any female rock vocalists in the space, so you
- 7:02Speaker 2: can hear a lot of inspiration from them on a
- 7:04Speaker 2: bunch of different songs.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Yeah, awesome. YEA journey the way you on now was
- 7:08Speaker 3: being well documented.
- 7:09Speaker 4: But when you first started on cheekchok Lin, did you
- 7:12Speaker 4: have aspirations of using that platform to become a musician
- 7:15Speaker 4: one day or you just thought I'd having to be
- 7:16Speaker 4: a fun.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I honestly blew up on the internet.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I always say by accident, because I really was just
- 7:23Speaker 2: bored during quarantine and I did it for fun.
- 7:26Speaker 1: And I always was.
- 7:27Speaker 2: A super musical kid, and I think where I got
- 7:30Speaker 2: into acting skits and stuff was the most I could
- 7:34Speaker 2: do because I was pretty anxious and didn't want to sing,
- 7:36Speaker 2: so it kind of was on the back burner and
- 7:38Speaker 2: I was doing it for fun. And then I realized
- 7:40Speaker 2: that I could share my music and my story with people,
- 7:44Speaker 2: and I started to do my own singles and started
- 7:48Speaker 2: to do some covers on YouTube and had to get
- 7:50Speaker 2: them to be.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Accepting of it.
- 7:51Speaker 2: But it definitely was always in the back of my
- 7:53Speaker 2: mind of something that I loved, and I always loved
- 7:56Speaker 2: pop stars and concerts as a kid too, so I
- 7:58Speaker 2: was ready once I had chance.
- 8:01Speaker 4: You spoke about, well, you talk about going on YouTube
- 8:04Speaker 4: about twenty twenty two, you started putting you to other
- 8:06Speaker 4: songs on there, So how long after you started doing
- 8:09Speaker 4: that we're confident enough to release your own original stuff.
- 8:14Speaker 2: It took about a year, i'd say, because I didn't
- 8:16Speaker 2: even really have experience singing in front of people. I
- 8:20Speaker 2: remember during the covers it was even a lot for
- 8:22Speaker 2: me to sing in front of like my manager and
- 8:24Speaker 2: the videographer or like the studio producer. So it's just
- 8:30Speaker 2: very nerve wracking to be so vulnerable in a setting
- 8:33Speaker 2: like that.
- 8:33Speaker 1: So I really had to work past it.
- 8:35Speaker 2: And we've definitely come a long way since then, but
- 8:38Speaker 2: I had to work over the nerves.
- 8:40Speaker 3: How bitch, you did.
- 8:43Speaker 4: A big reason why people connect with your music and
- 8:45Speaker 4: is your lyrics and the medical content around mental health.
- 8:49Speaker 3: And personal growth. But you're only a young woman yourself,
- 8:52Speaker 3: like you're still growing inching yourself. So I know it's
- 8:56Speaker 3: cathartic to share that with you with your fans.
- 8:58Speaker 4: But was it the big confronting thing initially to sort
- 9:01Speaker 4: of put that out there when you still don't quite
- 9:03Speaker 4: out yourself.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I think so at first, and I honestly now take
- 9:09Speaker 2: it as like my little therapy time to let things
- 9:12Speaker 2: off my chest and write down what I'm feeling, and
- 9:15Speaker 2: it just expel it into the universe to hopefully help me.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Get over it.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And I know a lot of my songs that I
- 9:21Speaker 2: put out there to get over something that I went
- 9:23Speaker 2: through or experienced have helped other people too, And you know,
- 9:27Speaker 2: I kind of listen to them now and I'm like, oh,
- 9:29Speaker 2: this helped me get over something, so I kind of
- 9:33Speaker 2: like to do it, and now I'm brave about it,
- 9:36Speaker 2: and I don't really think about, you know, who's listening
- 9:39Speaker 2: to it from my past or if anyone will know
- 9:41Speaker 2: what I'm talking about, because they're just for me at
- 9:44Speaker 2: the end of the day, and other people luckily relate
- 9:47Speaker 2: to them. But I always am writing about my personal
- 9:50Speaker 2: life and finding the right people to listen to it.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I've got to say as a father, there's probably
- 9:56Speaker 4: twelve eighty months ago my daughter's introduced me to your music,
- 9:58Speaker 4: so I had to listen to it and listen to
- 10:00Speaker 4: the lyrics as you do. And you've got a really
- 10:03Speaker 4: unique way of putting like some of the things you're
- 10:05Speaker 4: talking about could border on be in horror, you know,
- 10:09Speaker 4: something scary, but the way the way you put it
- 10:12Speaker 4: isn't confronting.
- 10:13Speaker 3: To children like it, they can relate to it. You don't.
- 10:16Speaker 4: We're talking about being stabbed in the heart. You don't
- 10:18Speaker 4: actually describe it. You know you like and a life
- 10:20Speaker 4: piece me just your way with words is really it's successful.
- 10:24Speaker 3: It's good.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Oh thank you.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:27Speaker 1: A lot of time it's like metaphorical.
- 10:29Speaker 2: I love setting a scene and using like heavy imagery
- 10:32Speaker 2: when I'm writing a song to kind of get the
- 10:34Speaker 2: emotion out. Like even in Loving Memory was super heavy
- 10:38Speaker 2: on like a picture. You could see exactly what was
- 10:40Speaker 2: happening as I said it, And I definitely tried to
- 10:43Speaker 2: make it that way to get the feeling and the
- 10:45Speaker 2: emotion across and describe what was going on in my life. Yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Do you remember the first time you ever heard one
- 10:52Speaker 3: of your songs on radio? And where were you and
- 10:54Speaker 3: what song was it?
- 10:56Speaker 1: Oh?
- 10:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it was recently when Critical came out. Serious XM
- 11:00Speaker 2: Octane played it for the first time and they introduced me,
- 11:05Speaker 2: and I got Octane in my car and I went
- 11:07Speaker 2: and sat in my car at the exact time they
- 11:09Speaker 2: were going to play it, and I was crying.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I was so excited.
- 11:13Speaker 2: I had never heard my song playing the radio ever.
- 11:16Speaker 2: And they played Homicide on Serious XOM Octane two, which
- 11:20Speaker 2: was awesome, and they played it right after the Amy
- 11:23Speaker 2: Lee Evanescence or Amily Poppy and Cordney La Plant Clab
- 11:28Speaker 2: and I was like, Wow, that was a crazy place
- 11:30Speaker 2: to put my song after.
- 11:32Speaker 1: I'm very honored the.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Girls Astray and so mighty you planned on coming out
- 11:39Speaker 4: of you to visit us and each time in the future, Oh,
- 11:42Speaker 4: I hope.
- 11:43Speaker 1: So I definitely want a tour in more places.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I haven't even made it over to like the UK
- 11:48Speaker 2: or anything yet, so it's definitely a dream of mine
- 11:51Speaker 2: to tour all around the world.
- 11:52Speaker 1: That would be amazing.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you got to yourself many story. Do you have
- 11:56Speaker 3: a manager to handles on that for you?
- 11:59Speaker 1: I have manager.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I have quite a few people on board, you know,
- 12:02Speaker 2: the touring. I got somebody overseas to so hopefully people
- 12:06Speaker 2: will see me doing some tours and some slots overseas
- 12:09Speaker 2: and there'll be a chance for them as well.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Yeah, very nice.
- 12:12Speaker 4: All right, Well, thanks very much for your tom balances
- 12:14Speaker 4: being a pleasure to speaking with you.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Take care of yourself in good luck with Vida. She's
- 12:17Speaker 3: a cracker of the song.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Thank you so much. I'm so excited to drop it.
