- 0:47Speaker 2: We are back.
- 0:48Speaker 1: We are back because what better way to bring this
- 0:52Speaker 1: podcast back to your e holes than literally the biggest
- 0:57Speaker 1: book announcement of twenty twenty six.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Like, let's be honest and it's only much so.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Unlocked in Basically, if you are living under a rock,
- 1:10Speaker 1: you probably haven't seen.
- 1:11Speaker 2: That Sarah J. Mass was officially.
- 1:13Speaker 1: A guest on Call Her Daddy, and she has spilled
- 1:18Speaker 1: some teeth, not all of it, not all of it.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I do feel like I was clickbaited a little bit,
- 1:23Speaker 1: but we did get some really juicy information, including our
- 1:28Speaker 1: Akata six and seven updates. So I have broken down
- 1:34Speaker 1: I watched the whole thing, I took notes, and I've
- 1:37Speaker 1: broken it down into basically overviews of what was discussed,
- 1:41Speaker 1: but then also by book, so that way you can
- 1:47Speaker 1: know what you want to know about certain books. Because
- 1:49Speaker 1: I don't want there to be any spoilers. My one
- 1:52Speaker 1: grievance with this, which I is not agreevance at all really, but.
- 1:55Speaker 2: It is tricky if you haven't read all of the
- 1:57Speaker 2: Sarah J. Mass books.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I've seen a couple comments about people being upset because
- 2:01Speaker 1: there's been spoilers in some of the teasers about like
- 2:03Speaker 1: throwne of Glass, which it is hard.
- 2:06Speaker 2: You know, when a.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Books come out nearly ten years ago, it's like you.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Probably it's probably fair game to discuss it. Potentially, I
- 2:14Speaker 2: don't know.
- 2:16Speaker 1: But the reason why I was like, I'm going to
- 2:18Speaker 1: break this out into this is the Akatar section. This
- 2:21Speaker 1: is what she spoke about throwne of Glass, and this
- 2:24Speaker 1: is what she spoke about the minimal amount she spoke.
- 2:26Speaker 2: About Crescent City.
- 2:27Speaker 1: So that way there's no spoilers for you that is
- 2:31Speaker 1: my plan. I'm very excited and yeah, let's just jump
- 2:37Speaker 1: straight into it. So Sarah jay Mass was on call
- 2:42Speaker 1: her daddy and this actually got leaked before it.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Was even announced, and everyone was like, oh my god,
- 2:47Speaker 2: it's happening. It's happening.
- 2:48Speaker 1: And one of my predictions was that they would release
- 2:53Speaker 1: the date that Akatar six was releasing, but it definitely
- 2:57Speaker 1: wasn't that they would also announce Akata seven. So Akitar
- 3:03Speaker 1: six is officially coming on the twenty sixth. No, that
- 3:08Speaker 1: is wrong, the twenty seventh of October twenty twenty six
- 3:13Speaker 1: and Akatar seven will be coming on the twelfth of
- 3:17Speaker 1: January twenty twenty seven.
- 3:19Speaker 2: So we're getting two.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Books released in the span of six months, like in
- 3:26Speaker 1: less than six months, which I am wow. And so
- 3:30Speaker 1: they discussed kind of how Sarah has kind of gone
- 3:35Speaker 1: with writing these books and developing these books and basically
- 3:38Speaker 1: creating these worlds. So they really started the episode with discussing,
- 3:43Speaker 1: you know, what it's been like writing these books, how
- 3:46Speaker 1: young she was when she first started writing these books,
- 3:48Speaker 1: and whether or not she plans these ideas and these
- 3:52Speaker 1: crossovers that she has, and she confirmed that these worlds
- 3:56Speaker 1: just live in her brain. She doesn't map them out.
- 3:59Speaker 1: She does have a vision board. She said that music
- 4:02Speaker 1: really fuels her vision for her stories, but they really
- 4:06Speaker 1: just live in her head, which I was like, that
- 4:08Speaker 1: is wild, because the way that she links things, you
- 4:11Speaker 1: would think that she has like an entire room with
- 4:14Speaker 1: like red string on it going in between and like
- 4:16Speaker 1: and then in book four this would have happened, but
- 4:18Speaker 1: in book two how to do this?
- 4:20Speaker 2: And she doesn't. She doesn't do that.
- 4:21Speaker 1: She did say that sometimes she writes books ahead to
- 4:25Speaker 1: link it all together, like she'll write a line her
- 4:28Speaker 1: future line and laugh to herself, knowing, oh, this will
- 4:31Speaker 1: come back, but she really doesn't plan it like super meticulously,
- 4:38Speaker 1: which I was like, wow when I thought that.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I also really.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Loved how she spoke about the rise of romantic fantasy
- 4:47Speaker 1: and how you know this rise has really been for
- 4:50Speaker 1: women and focusing on women's pleasure.
- 4:53Speaker 2: But how there.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Is this dismissal of smut if you will, and she says,
- 4:59Speaker 1: when when people here, I write romantic fantasy as much
- 5:02Speaker 1: as ive spies, there is this dismissal of smut. But
- 5:06Speaker 1: that's not what my fans come up and talk to
- 5:08Speaker 1: me about. And she goes on to talk about how,
- 5:11Speaker 1: you know, like everyone loves giggling and kicking their feet,
- 5:13Speaker 1: but when people come up to her, it's about how
- 5:15Speaker 1: these stories have moved them. It's about how they left
- 5:18Speaker 1: you know, really really negative and domestic violence situations because
- 5:23Speaker 1: they realized, you know, the relationships they were in were
- 5:26Speaker 1: not strong relationships. And that she has this inherent there
- 5:31Speaker 1: is this inherent dismissal of spice books or romancey books
- 5:36Speaker 1: or smut.
- 5:36Speaker 2: If you will.
- 5:37Speaker 1: And I thought this was a really interesting quote when
- 5:41Speaker 1: she was speaking about this, because she said, when I
- 5:44Speaker 1: reread books, I'm not reading things that make me depressed.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I want to go on a journey, and but it
- 5:50Speaker 1: brings me joy. There's a tendency for people to roll
- 5:53Speaker 1: their eyes at things that bring people joy and women joy,
- 5:55Speaker 1: and it pisses me off constantly. Any mention of set
- 6:00Speaker 1: apparently devalues the work. I find it a little more
- 6:04Speaker 1: than frustrating. And I was like collapse for Sarah. I
- 6:10Speaker 1: completely agree with this. This is something that I've you know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: said multiple times on this podcast. But the little tippit
- 6:17Speaker 1: I took out for this is fabulous. We will always
- 6:20Speaker 1: get a happy ending I fucking hate a sad ending.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I can't stand it. I don't want to be moved.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I don't want to be like, Wow, that hurt my feelings.
- 6:28Speaker 1: But I really that was so beautiful.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I don't care. I want a happy ending.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I want that and that brings me joy. That's all
- 6:37Speaker 1: I want. Because she mentioned how she started writing when
- 6:40Speaker 1: she was so young, and that to be able to
- 6:42Speaker 1: figure out these worlds and characters was because she was
- 6:46Speaker 1: trying to get published for so long, and she had
- 6:48Speaker 1: a lot of downtime and was always waiting. So that
- 6:51Speaker 1: brings us to Akata. So if you haven't read Akata,
- 6:57Speaker 1: skip ahead. I'm gonna put time stamps to where you
- 7:00Speaker 1: should skip. If you haven't haven't read things in the description,
- 7:05Speaker 1: So go to the description. If you haven't read Akata,
- 7:07Speaker 1: there will be a time stamp that will say this
- 7:09Speaker 1: time thrown of glass. Skip to that time and you
- 7:12Speaker 1: won't hear anything about Akata further.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Okay Akata.
- 7:17Speaker 1: So she said that the first two books of Akata
- 7:20Speaker 1: poured out of her. Get that real peep pop in there.
- 7:24Speaker 1: So they poured out of her in the span of
- 7:27Speaker 1: two months, which is wild. She mentioned that the first
- 7:32Speaker 1: book of Akata actually was really close to the first
- 7:36Speaker 1: draft that she wrote, but she ended up rewriting a
- 7:39Speaker 1: court of myst and fury, which I was like, Hell,
- 7:42Speaker 1: that's crazy. And she did mention that Crescent City was
- 7:46Speaker 1: a passion project that she started writing when she started
- 7:50Speaker 1: writing Throne of Glass in Akata, and that it started
- 7:53Speaker 1: as something that she actually had no intention of publishing
- 7:55Speaker 1: and it was just for funzies, which I was like, Oh,
- 7:58Speaker 1: there you go. So my notes are a little bit
- 8:02Speaker 1: all over the place, so we're just gonna have to
- 8:04Speaker 1: bear with me. And I've pulled in like the most
- 8:07Speaker 1: important parts of these segments, and I really appreciated there
- 8:12Speaker 1: is a siren one moment, please oh it's done.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Okay. So Fayre's pregnancy.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I loved that they didn't shy away from this because
- 8:21Speaker 1: obviously there is a lot of discourse online about Fayar's pregnancy,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and Alex Cooper asks her, you know a lot of
- 8:28Speaker 1: people were frustrated that she didn't know what was happening,
- 8:32Speaker 1: but Recan did, and at first we get context as
- 8:36Speaker 1: to why you know, Fayra is pregnant and why she
- 8:40Speaker 1: wants to write this, but she doesn't really address the
- 8:42Speaker 1: fact that recent kind of fucked up in this situation,
- 8:45Speaker 1: and I really appreciated the fact that, like Alex Cooper,
- 8:49Speaker 1: brought it back.
- 8:50Speaker 2: She was like, no, no, we want to discuss this.
- 8:54Speaker 1: So the context was that she started the answer to
- 8:58Speaker 1: this question was I love my children. I hated being pregnant,
- 9:01Speaker 1: which I was like, love the honesty because never been
- 9:05Speaker 1: pregnant myself, can't imagine it's much fun. She says, so
- 9:09Speaker 1: that it was very traumatic for her. The constant tests
- 9:12Speaker 1: and she was weight shamed by a nurse and her
- 9:16Speaker 1: son was born in an emergency C section two weeks late,
- 9:19Speaker 1: and was told not to take any pain medication. She
- 9:23Speaker 1: was also told that she needed to eat a very
- 9:25Speaker 1: big dinner by one of the medical stuff. She then
- 9:29Speaker 1: goes to the hospital and was told by a doctor
- 9:31Speaker 1: who was inducing her that started yelling at her and
- 9:35Speaker 1: was like why did you eat so much? Like that's terrible,
- 9:38Speaker 1: you shouldn't have done that, And she's going, but your
- 9:40Speaker 1: colleague told me to do that, like that's what I
- 9:42Speaker 1: was told to do. And also this is her first child,
- 9:44Speaker 1: so she's terrified. And then she says the doctor scolded
- 9:49Speaker 1: her saying this is what we're doing and you did
- 9:51Speaker 1: everything wrong. They wouldn't let her husband go back with
- 9:54Speaker 1: her to get an epidural.
- 9:55Speaker 2: This was also her first operation.
- 9:56Speaker 1: She'd ever had, and it was only a medical Indi
- 10:00Speaker 1: that was the person to help her and hold her
- 10:03Speaker 1: hand and help her feel like things were going to
- 10:05Speaker 1: be okay. She mentions that she kept thinking of how
- 10:08Speaker 1: if I was born a hundred years ago, I would
- 10:10Speaker 1: be dead. I should be dead, and that's what lingered
- 10:14Speaker 1: that without modern science and medicine, she wouldn't be here.
- 10:18Speaker 1: And she says that writing Fayar's pregnancy was her own
- 10:22Speaker 1: way of processing, in her words, my shit. So the
- 10:26Speaker 1: fear that Reese's fear came from her fear about having
- 10:31Speaker 1: another child and the fear the trauma of all of
- 10:34Speaker 1: that that writing that storyline allowed her to get it
- 10:38Speaker 1: out of her system, which I thought was really really
- 10:41Speaker 1: interesting because so much of this interview was her actually
- 10:46Speaker 1: giving context to so many things in her books that
- 10:49Speaker 1: are actually based on her a mirror her life. So
- 10:53Speaker 1: later in the episode they go into it and Alex
- 10:57Speaker 1: Kuber brings it back up and she's like, so, Reese,
- 11:00Speaker 1: the pregnancy and essentially the trust being broken with the audience,
- 11:05Speaker 1: to which Sarah replies, Reese is entitled to go through
- 11:08Speaker 1: his own shit and make his own mistakes. Should he
- 11:11Speaker 1: have told her, yes, he made a bad choice. Farah
- 11:15Speaker 1: was upset and Nesta thought it was fucked up. She
- 11:18Speaker 1: then continues to say, I love Reese, but it's much
- 11:21Speaker 1: more interesting for me as a writer to have him
- 11:24Speaker 1: make a bad call and do it from a place
- 11:26Speaker 1: of love. He's still five hundred years old, yes, sorry,
- 11:31Speaker 1: she says, yes, he's five hundred years old, but he's
- 11:34Speaker 1: still learning. Farah would have wanted to know, but understands
- 11:37Speaker 1: why Reese didn't because he was also desperate for a solution.
- 11:41Speaker 2: They have issues, they're still.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Figuring out the dynamic. I thought this was a very
- 11:45Speaker 1: very interesting take and somewhat refreshing because she's basically saying
- 11:50Speaker 1: their story doesn't just finish. It's not just like ook done, yay,
- 11:53Speaker 1: everyone gets along. They never have an issue ever again.
- 11:56Speaker 1: To her, the story continues to exist and involve and evolve. Sorry,
- 12:02Speaker 1: and that's basically what that was, which I was like.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Wow, okay, very interesting.
- 12:09Speaker 1: So we then go into talking about the feedback about
- 12:14Speaker 1: writing this Interfara's story and whether she was nervous about
- 12:19Speaker 1: writing into the pregnancy trope if you will, to which
- 12:22Speaker 1: she says, no, like, motherhood is a thing for so
- 12:25Speaker 1: many women and experiencing that, and it was something that
- 12:28Speaker 1: I wanted to write about. Fair's journey shouldn't just end.
- 12:31Speaker 1: There was a story to be told. There will be
- 12:33Speaker 1: things that play out from that. It's not weak, But
- 12:36Speaker 1: the line in that answer was when she said there
- 12:42Speaker 1: will be things that play out from that, which I'm like,
- 12:46Speaker 1: now what you mean by that, Sarah? I want to
- 12:49Speaker 1: know what's playing out from that? Are we going to
- 12:51Speaker 1: get some storyline like of an older Nicks? Like is
- 12:57Speaker 1: there more to it than that? Will we get a
- 12:59Speaker 1: time jump story that is just like the first thing that.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Popped into my brain.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Probably not, if we're being honest. She's like, I'm tired,
- 13:07Speaker 1: but that was what popped into my head. But we're
- 13:10Speaker 1: obviously going to see more about motherhood and Favor's storyline
- 13:14Speaker 1: there and maybe how that journey evolves. They also go
- 13:20Speaker 1: into everyone's favorite character, Tamlin, so they start discussing like
- 13:28Speaker 1: Reese versus Tamlin and how the story kind of started,
- 13:33Speaker 1: and she very much referenced the push and pull of
- 13:37Speaker 1: characters that she really enjoys. And she started talking about
- 13:40Speaker 1: when she first wrote Akata and how it was really
- 13:44Speaker 1: supposed to start as a very romantic beauty and the
- 13:49Speaker 1: beast retelling, and that she sometimes doesn't plan when characters
- 13:55Speaker 1: actually have that spark and that push and pull. She said,
- 13:58Speaker 1: if it turns me on, I'll write it. The characters
- 14:01Speaker 1: have to have a spark, and that's beyond me. Sometimes
- 14:04Speaker 1: characters get together and I didn't even plan it. There's
- 14:07Speaker 1: something there I can't put my finger on. And it
- 14:10Speaker 1: was essentially like, well, Tamlin was supposed to be. Was
- 14:13Speaker 1: Tamlin supposed to be? It was Tamlin supposed to be endgame,
- 14:17Speaker 1: And she says, I didn't plan Akata. I didn't plan
- 14:20Speaker 1: for Reese, and then she didn't plan for Pharaoh.
- 14:24Speaker 2: She didn't plan for Tanlin.
- 14:25Speaker 1: And then Rene walked onto the page and she goes, well, no, sorry.
- 14:28Speaker 1: When she was writing it, she realized she was writing Talin.
- 14:33Speaker 2: She goes, oh, it's not this guy.
- 14:34Speaker 1: It's this guy because Reese walked onto the page and
- 14:38Speaker 1: she thought, who the fuck is this? And she said,
- 14:41Speaker 1: it's so funny. When the first book came out, everyone
- 14:43Speaker 1: loved Tamlin, and she realized she already had that plan
- 14:46Speaker 1: from the first moment that Reese and Fera met and
- 14:51Speaker 1: people were getting tatoos, and she was like, oh my god,
- 14:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to pay for people's tattoo removal. They
- 14:56Speaker 1: do go into the Tamlin redemption theory and she discusses,
- 15:03Speaker 1: you know, how Tamlin has a bucked up family and
- 15:06Speaker 1: he doesn't have the emotional toolkit to handle his trauma
- 15:09Speaker 1: from under the mountain and growing up and basically drags
- 15:12Speaker 1: Fearr under with him, whereas Reese responds to trauma in
- 15:15Speaker 1: a way Feyrh connects with, and that Tamlin is a
- 15:19Speaker 1: result of his upbringing and that Sarah pities him. She
- 15:23Speaker 1: then goes on to whether or not Tamlin deserves a
- 15:26Speaker 1: redemption arc, and I do think she responded to this
- 15:29Speaker 1: incredibly well.
- 15:30Speaker 2: She said, it's tricky.
- 15:31Speaker 1: If I were to write more about him, it would
- 15:34Speaker 1: have to be done in a way that doesn't erase
- 15:36Speaker 1: what he has done or invalidate the feelings of my readers.
- 15:39Speaker 2: She discussed how a lot of readers.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Have found relatability in the some abusive nature that is Tanlin,
- 15:47Speaker 1: and how people have come to her and said that
- 15:49Speaker 1: how they've left abusive relationships because this book made them
- 15:52Speaker 1: realize they were in one. And for her to, you know,
- 15:55Speaker 1: write a further storyline for Tamlin would have to be
- 15:58Speaker 1: done in a way that was genuine and genuine reality
- 16:02Speaker 1: and to honor and respect what he represents to people.
- 16:06Speaker 1: So one of her best friends is actually a survivor
- 16:09Speaker 1: of domestic abuse who refers to her ex as Tamlin,
- 16:14Speaker 1: And so that's kind of what she's pulling on that
- 16:16Speaker 1: it's something that she would really want to think about,
- 16:19Speaker 1: and it's actually the hardest thing for her to think
- 16:21Speaker 1: about emotionally. And she mentioned that part of her wants
- 16:26Speaker 1: to think that fucker can burn in hell, but the
- 16:28Speaker 1: writer in me doesn't want.
- 16:30Speaker 2: To excuse it but explore it.
- 16:33Speaker 1: So she didn't confirm or deny whether or not this
- 16:35Speaker 1: is happening. My vibe was that it's not necessarily on
- 16:39Speaker 1: the cards right now. I think she wants to respect
- 16:41Speaker 1: what he represents to people. But there is also that
- 16:45Speaker 1: part on her that's like, well, where's the story? Like
- 16:47Speaker 1: how does this evolve? Does he just go and slip
- 16:50Speaker 1: into madness? Is their story there? Does he right? His
- 16:54Speaker 1: wrongs or is.
- 16:55Speaker 2: He just a product of what he is?
- 16:59Speaker 1: So I thought that was really interesting, and I just
- 17:01Speaker 1: I thought it was very very good of her to
- 17:04Speaker 1: acknowledge what he represents and his wrongdoings and not put
- 17:07Speaker 1: it in a way that it was like, oh, it
- 17:09Speaker 1: would be fun for him to be like, now he's
- 17:11Speaker 1: the villain and he comes back that you know, there's
- 17:13Speaker 1: that you know, conversation online, but that's not what it is.
- 17:16Speaker 1: It is deeper than that. Moving on to something a
- 17:20Speaker 1: little bit lighter, she is asked what is the most
- 17:24Speaker 1: romantic moment between Reese and Feyrr, to which she says
- 17:27Speaker 1: star Fall, and she says this was inspired by the
- 17:30Speaker 1: song Cosmic Love by Florence and the Machine. She then
- 17:34Speaker 1: also confirms that there what I took was three mates,
- 17:41Speaker 1: three types of mates. She's talked about two mates, and
- 17:44Speaker 1: there was kind of this other one that she introduced
- 17:47Speaker 1: in the conversation. So Alex Cooper says, what is a mate?
- 17:50Speaker 1: And Sarah responds, you're destined true love. There's a biological
- 17:55Speaker 1: component you can be mated, but also not which I was.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Like, Sarah, what was that mean?
- 18:01Speaker 1: So she started by saying, there's two types there's one,
- 18:04Speaker 1: there's true mates, and then there's two.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Nature made a mistake.
- 18:08Speaker 1: And so when she says nature made a mistake, she
- 18:10Speaker 1: used the example of Resan's parents, right, And then as
- 18:14Speaker 1: she's talking more, she said she then uses the words
- 18:17Speaker 1: perfect mates. And then she says recent Favra and Nesta
- 18:21Speaker 1: and Cassian which I've seen so many conversations about whether
- 18:25Speaker 1: or not Nesta and Cassina actually mates, which yeah, she's
- 18:29Speaker 1: basically confirmed and she's called them perfect mates. It then
- 18:33Speaker 1: goes into whether Elaine and Lucien are Lucian Lucien Lucian fuck.
- 18:40Speaker 2: I don't know, Sarey.
- 18:42Speaker 1: I didn't listen to the audiobooks, but she asked if
- 18:44Speaker 1: Elaine is rejecting the bond, and Sarah did not confirm,
- 18:49Speaker 1: nor deny, nor do.
- 18:50Speaker 2: I expect her to confirm this.
- 18:52Speaker 1: I'm like, otherwise, don't put out a book. What's the
- 18:54Speaker 1: point of putting out a book if you're going to
- 18:55Speaker 1: answer that. But she did give us a little tibit
- 18:59Speaker 1: that she said, look, Elaine has her own shit she's
- 19:02Speaker 1: going through right now, and I think that's what will
- 19:05Speaker 1: be exploring in the next episode. She also confirmed Resond
- 19:11Speaker 1: is not based on her husband, which I do see
- 19:15Speaker 1: a lot of authors writing and saying that because they're like, no,
- 19:19Speaker 1: I'm not writing about having sex with my husband, thank
- 19:21Speaker 1: you very much.
- 19:23Speaker 2: But most importantly, she confirmed.
- 19:26Speaker 1: That Akata six and seven are officially happening. When Alex
- 19:30Speaker 1: Cooper asked how long the books will be, she said,
- 19:34Speaker 1: it's long, that was her response. So we have part
- 19:39Speaker 1: one coming out this year in October. However, there are
- 19:43Speaker 1: also parts two and three which will be joined in
- 19:47Speaker 1: the same book, which is coming out in January. So
- 19:51Speaker 1: we're getting it's like a three part story, is what
- 19:54Speaker 1: I got from the amazone, a three part story.
- 19:57Speaker 2: But they are over two two books.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Part one which is one part and that's Akatar six
- 20:03Speaker 1: coming out in October, and Akaitar seven, which is part
- 20:07Speaker 1: two and three joined within the one book.
- 20:10Speaker 2: And it's Akata.
- 20:11Speaker 1: But she said she's telling it the way that it
- 20:14Speaker 1: excites her, that it's exciting to me, and I'm telling
- 20:17Speaker 1: it in a way that is most important to me
- 20:20Speaker 1: to honor my fans, and I'm not playing into industry
- 20:23Speaker 1: rules and I'm doing what feels good for me.
- 20:26Speaker 2: I love this.
- 20:27Speaker 1: I think at this stage in this all since career
- 20:31Speaker 1: sounds very lady whistled down off me, doesn't it. I
- 20:34Speaker 1: think at this stage, with how big Akata has become,
- 20:37Speaker 1: it makes a lot of sense that she's like, this
- 20:40Speaker 1: is the book that I want to write, because there
- 20:42Speaker 1: are millions of fans now, and it is impossible to
- 20:46Speaker 1: write the book that every single person wants.
- 20:48Speaker 2: That just can't happen.
- 20:51Speaker 1: So I think that's really important to remember when we,
- 20:54Speaker 1: you know, look at theories and read books that it's like, yes,
- 20:57Speaker 1: obviously we have things we want to happen, but at
- 20:59Speaker 1: the end of the day, the author is writing their book.
- 21:02Speaker 2: And so I loved that. I literally can't wait.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I'm going to start my reread very soon. I think,
- 21:08Speaker 1: maybe not too soon because I want it to be fresh. Ah,
- 21:11Speaker 1: I don't know, but I can't wait. So they also
- 21:14Speaker 1: go into some quick fire questions, to which she doesn't
- 21:19Speaker 1: answer a lot of them. Again, I think this is
- 21:22Speaker 1: fair enough, because if you did answer all.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Of them, there's no book.
- 21:27Speaker 1: What's the point.
- 21:28Speaker 2: It's it's spoilers, you know.
- 21:30Speaker 1: So some of the more interesting ones that I thought
- 21:34Speaker 1: to mention is how to Faye get into the House
- 21:37Speaker 1: of Wind if they don't have any wings? Do they
- 21:40Speaker 1: have to take the stairs, and she said this is
- 21:42Speaker 1: something that we might find out more on, which I
- 21:45Speaker 1: was like, oh, okay. Another question was does Reesen's last
- 21:49Speaker 1: name matter?
- 21:51Speaker 2: And she said no, which I was like what. So
- 21:54Speaker 2: she said what's.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Reeson's last name? And Sarah like just started laughing and
- 21:57Speaker 1: was like a haha, I'm not telling you. There's like
- 21:59Speaker 1: so much much pressure on it now. And then Alex
- 22:03Speaker 1: said doesn't matter, and she said no.
- 22:06Speaker 2: But I'm like, if it doesn't matter, then just tell us,
- 22:08Speaker 2: you know, I don't know. I don't know.
- 22:11Speaker 1: They then discussed Moore's power and she said, what's More's power?
- 22:15Speaker 1: And Sarah jamask goes it's truth and.
- 22:17Speaker 2: We're all like what does that mean?
- 22:19Speaker 1: She then did say there are other powers beyond that
- 22:22Speaker 1: and yes, we will find out. And then the other
- 22:28Speaker 1: question that I loved was where did Braxis go? And
- 22:32Speaker 1: she responded with where do you think she went?
- 22:34Speaker 2: Fear itself? Where does that go?
- 22:36Speaker 1: Which I was like, Oh, there's the rider, there's the
- 22:39Speaker 1: rider in her delk. Okay, we need to talk about
- 22:43Speaker 1: what we're listening to at the moment. Audible has just
- 22:47Speaker 1: dropped full throttle and if you love romance with a
- 22:50Speaker 1: bit of drama and tension. This one is very good.
- 22:54Speaker 1: The story for is Billy, who created this massive motorsport documentary,
- 22:58Speaker 1: and Dante, the brooding Formula one team principle. She has
- 23:01Speaker 1: a very complicated history with They haven't seen each other
- 23:06Speaker 1: in years, but now they're forced to work together while
- 23:09Speaker 1: the cameras are rolling and the whole.
- 23:11Speaker 2: World is watching.
- 23:13Speaker 1: So you've got high pressure racing career stakes and a
- 23:17Speaker 1: very unresolved second chance romance happening at the same time.
- 23:21Speaker 1: It's the perfect follow up if you love romance but
- 23:23Speaker 1: also enjoy a bit of sports drama and behind the
- 23:26Speaker 1: scenes chaos. So listen to Full Throttle now on Audible.
- 23:30Speaker 1: So those were the rapid fire questions. However, I'm now
- 23:35Speaker 1: going to get into Crescent City because that's the quickest one.
- 23:38Speaker 1: So if you haven't read Crescent City, then definitely skip
- 23:43Speaker 1: through this bit. Revert to the time stamp sheet in
- 23:47Speaker 1: the description. So Crescent City she didn't talk about that much,
- 23:52Speaker 1: to be honest, Like, Crescent City was definitely not the
- 23:56Speaker 1: focus of this episode. However, there was some very very
- 24:04Speaker 1: juicy questions about the Akata and Crescent City crossover. So
- 24:11Speaker 1: the first one that hurt my feelings, which if you've
- 24:14Speaker 1: listened to a recent episode you know why is she
- 24:16Speaker 1: asked a Bryson Hunt endgame, to which she full heartedly
- 24:20Speaker 1: responded with yes, and I was like, no, not no,
- 24:25Speaker 1: hate to Hunt, but I was banking on a different theory,
- 24:28Speaker 1: to which she absolutely shut down. And the question was
- 24:32Speaker 1: is Bryce's true mate as real? And she said no,
- 24:36Speaker 1: I can tell you one hundred percent no, and she
- 24:38Speaker 1: was like sorry to people who were banking on that
- 24:40Speaker 1: theory aka me, but yeah, they are not mates, and
- 24:45Speaker 1: I was like wow, crying. Alex Cooper then asked a
- 24:48Speaker 1: Reese and Rune related to which she said skip. And
- 24:53Speaker 1: then she also asked is made from throne of glass
- 24:56Speaker 1: related to them, to which she also didn't answer. I'm like,
- 25:01Speaker 1: why are you answering some things and not answering the
- 25:03Speaker 1: other things? And like, are the things that you're not
- 25:05Speaker 1: answering things that we can't know? And that's why, because
- 25:10Speaker 1: there's actually some meat to those theories is something.
- 25:13Speaker 2: That I was very very interested in hearing about.
- 25:16Speaker 1: And then last but not lea, she asked, is Cormack dead?
- 25:20Speaker 1: And again she did not respond to this, so they
- 25:25Speaker 1: really didn't discuss Crescent City that much. It was a
- 25:29Speaker 1: very very quick gloss over, I feel, but it wasn't
- 25:35Speaker 1: like I think the focus was meant to.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Be about Akatar.
- 25:38Speaker 1: That's what most people would be tuning in for, so
- 25:40Speaker 1: I do think it makes sense. However, we then do
- 25:43Speaker 1: get into Throne of Glass, my favorite book ever, and
- 25:49Speaker 1: there wasn't too much about the books, given that this
- 25:53Speaker 1: is at the moment a completed series, So they really
- 25:58Speaker 1: spoke about Sarah's relationship with Aileen, given that that was
- 26:02Speaker 1: her first published book. Like Aileen was her first girl,
- 26:05Speaker 1: and Sarah jay Mass says like Aileen came out of her,
- 26:10Speaker 1: that her journey mirrored so much of Sarah's growing up,
- 26:13Speaker 1: and that it was really a mirror journey there. Aileen
- 26:17Speaker 1: from the start came out of Sarah fully formed. She says,
- 26:21Speaker 1: she was like Athena springing from Zeus's head, and I
- 26:24Speaker 1: let her lead the way I had no control over her,
- 26:27Speaker 1: and I let her lead me where she needed to go,
- 26:29Speaker 1: her rage and her anger.
- 26:31Speaker 2: I never got to see women being angry.
- 26:33Speaker 1: And bitchy the way I often felt. I had strong
- 26:37Speaker 1: feelings about things, and I wanted to write about a
- 26:39Speaker 1: woman who didn't have to be appealing to anyone. I
- 26:42Speaker 1: didn't know anyone who met one guy and fell in love.
- 26:45Speaker 1: I wanted her to have multiple relationships. As I was
- 26:48Speaker 1: growing up, she was too, and Mannon Manon was an
- 26:52Speaker 1: even more.
- 26:53Speaker 2: Extreme version of it.
- 26:55Speaker 1: This was so amazing. I loved hearing this because I
- 27:00Speaker 1: think so often we see you know, fmcs and just
- 27:04Speaker 1: women in real life had this pressure to be demure
- 27:08Speaker 1: or the chill girl or the cool girl, and to
- 27:11Speaker 1: not have rage, to not be angry, to not vouch
- 27:14Speaker 1: for yourself, to not stand up for yourself. When women
- 27:18Speaker 1: do have rage, women do have anger and strong feelings.
- 27:22Speaker 1: And that is what made me love Ailen so fucking much,
- 27:28Speaker 1: Like I just that series is everything to me, and
- 27:32Speaker 1: the fact that like Manon was even just another character
- 27:35Speaker 1: that really leaned into no, like I'm angry and this
- 27:40Speaker 1: is stupid and men.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Are ruining the world. Evidently still so.
- 27:46Speaker 1: And she talks about how her mental health alongside Throne
- 27:50Speaker 1: of Glass was really really important, And in twenty eighteen
- 27:56Speaker 1: she published three books, and it was actually requested of
- 28:01Speaker 1: her to come back from Eternity leave a couple weeks
- 28:04Speaker 1: later to do copy edits of Kingdom of Ash that
- 28:08Speaker 1: was coming out. They told her that Kingdom of Ash
- 28:10Speaker 1: was too long and they needed to cut five pages
- 28:13Speaker 1: because it was getting printed in two days. She's then
- 28:16Speaker 1: like scrambling to get this done, and she was saying
- 28:21Speaker 1: she's handing back manuscripts, you know, with her breast milk
- 28:24Speaker 1: pump on like it's billed onto it and all that stuff,
- 28:27Speaker 1: only for them to come back and go, oh, no,
- 28:29Speaker 1: it's okay, we made it work, which is crazy, Like
- 28:32Speaker 1: it's these behind the scenes things you don't see, but
- 28:35Speaker 1: you do just see, you know, all of us fucking
- 28:38Speaker 1: sitting here and.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Complaining, being like when are we getting the box eraah,
- 28:40Speaker 2: and she's like, plea, he's it.
- 28:43Speaker 1: She talks about how this actually got really bad over
- 28:48Speaker 1: the years of twenty eighteen to twenty nineteen, and that
- 28:51Speaker 1: she had an overwhelming sense that something awful was going
- 28:53Speaker 1: to happen, and that in twenty nineteen, Sarah J. Mass
- 28:57Speaker 1: reached a very dark place. She said, I needed therapy,
- 29:00Speaker 1: and going a therapy saved my life. She actually also
- 29:04Speaker 1: admits and shares that the Nesta's scene where she breaks
- 29:08Speaker 1: down on a hike is actually based on the moment
- 29:12Speaker 1: that Sarah broke down on a hike in New Zealand
- 29:15Speaker 1: with her husband, and that Sarah j. Mass broke out
- 29:18Speaker 1: of her depression at the same time as Nesta did,
- 29:21Speaker 1: and that both her and Nesta went on a mental
- 29:24Speaker 1: health journey together. When she was riding a court of
- 29:28Speaker 1: silver flames moving on to the rapid fire for Throne
- 29:33Speaker 1: of Glass. This one again, we were like a little
- 29:36Speaker 1: bit like, huh, she answered, some didn't answer others again
- 29:40Speaker 1: fair enough. Number one, what did Lucan do? I love
- 29:44Speaker 1: that we asked this and she was like she was
- 29:47Speaker 1: so funny. She was just like, what do you mean, Like,
- 29:49Speaker 1: oh my gosh, and she's like, this is maybe made
- 29:51Speaker 1: me want to think about it more, and then said
- 29:53Speaker 1: maybe bonus content as a surprise Christmas present.
- 29:57Speaker 2: I'm like, I will cry, I will die. Please.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Yes. She then also asks where is Vaughan and Sarah
- 30:04Speaker 1: just says, that's the thing I think about a lot.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Alex asks is the settling the same or similar as
- 30:11Speaker 1: the drop? And Sarah skips this question. They then ask
- 30:15Speaker 1: a very very important one which has had a lot
- 30:18Speaker 1: of conversation, and it's why did Aileen have to lose
- 30:20Speaker 1: her powers?
- 30:22Speaker 2: So Sarah says that she actually grappled with this one
- 30:25Speaker 2: a lot.
- 30:26Speaker 1: This was the decision I wasn't a huge fan of,
- 30:29Speaker 1: if I'm being totally honest, And yeah, she did mention
- 30:34Speaker 1: that she hated the idea of Aileen giving up something
- 30:37Speaker 1: she learned to love and embrace about herself, but felt.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Like the series needed a level of sacrifice.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I don't think the ending would have been as deserved
- 30:47Speaker 1: without it, and would have felt as deserved without it,
- 30:50Speaker 1: is what she says, and that it opens up the
- 30:53Speaker 1: question of what does it look like for her after that,
- 30:57Speaker 1: and it felt like the start of a different journey, which.
- 31:01Speaker 2: I was like, Sarah, are you giving me my girl back?
- 31:05Speaker 2: Can I have Aileen bag please?
- 31:07Speaker 1: That was the one thing that I was like the
- 31:09Speaker 1: most disappointed in with Crescent City three was I was like,
- 31:11Speaker 1: I deluded myself into thinking that Aileen was going to
- 31:15Speaker 1: come back and there was going to be a crossover,
- 31:16Speaker 1: and I was.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Like, where is she where? Where's where wreck?
- 31:22Speaker 1: And I got like three quarters of the way through
- 31:24Speaker 1: and she was nowhere to be seen, and I was like, well,
- 31:28Speaker 1: that is the saddest thing.
- 31:29Speaker 2: That's what happened to me in.
- 31:30Speaker 1: My entire life.
- 31:31Speaker 2: However, bah, she did say.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Well, Alex asked, will we ever see throwne of Glass
- 31:37Speaker 1: characters again? And Sarah said, I think about them all
- 31:42Speaker 1: the time. Who knows if my children let me sleep
- 31:45Speaker 1: in past five?
- 31:46Speaker 2: Sure?
- 31:47Speaker 1: And I have to say, Sarah, I will offer you
- 31:49Speaker 1: my free babysitting in nannying services.
- 31:52Speaker 2: I will.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I will help wherever you need. If you need me
- 31:55Speaker 1: to tuck your kids in at night, if you need
- 31:57Speaker 1: me to play rope blocks, I can learn. I can learn,
- 32:01Speaker 1: I can learn Fortnite, I can play what's the other one?
- 32:04Speaker 2: Well, world of No? No, fuck, what's it called? Minecraft?
- 32:09Speaker 2: I can do that. Tap me in, tap me in?
- 32:11Speaker 2: Coach please? I need thrown a glass. But then I'm
- 32:14Speaker 2: also like, oh, that's serious? Is so perfect? Do we
- 32:16Speaker 2: fuck with it?
- 32:17Speaker 1: Huh?
- 32:19Speaker 2: The dilemmas of life.
- 32:20Speaker 1: The last question she asked about Throne of Glass is
- 32:23Speaker 1: where is manon to which Sarah applies therapy?
- 32:27Speaker 2: And I was like love that. Oh wait, no, sorry.
- 32:28Speaker 1: The last question she does ask is what happened to
- 32:31Speaker 1: the world of Throne of Glass book? If you look
- 32:33Speaker 1: on her author page you can see there it's this
- 32:35Speaker 1: book that she was writing to which she answers. This
- 32:38Speaker 1: was supposed to be a passion project, and I actually
- 32:41Speaker 1: realized it was a big task and I need more
- 32:44Speaker 1: time to focus on it. So she's like, I want
- 32:46Speaker 1: to get these books done first and then we can
- 32:49Speaker 1: discuss it now. My final prediction for this episode was
- 32:53Speaker 1: the announcement of a standalone series.
- 32:56Speaker 2: I'm not quite convinced we didn't get that. All right,
- 33:00Speaker 2: let me live in my own little the Lulu world.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Here, Alex Cooper brings up the Twilight of the God's
- 33:07Speaker 1: Pinterest board. So Sarah often uses pinterest boards to kind
- 33:11Speaker 1: of give herself vision and mood board and do all
- 33:14Speaker 1: that stuff. And she responds that it was a story
- 33:18Speaker 1: I had in my head. She then says I have
- 33:21Speaker 1: three or four unpublished full books on my computer of
- 33:26Speaker 1: just different stories, not necessarily Twilight of the Gods. But
- 33:30Speaker 1: she says, I'm just always writing on passion projects. She says,
- 33:34Speaker 1: I don't know if they will ever see the light
- 33:36Speaker 1: of day, and I was like, I would like them.
- 33:41Speaker 1: I would like them to see the light of day.
- 33:43Speaker 1: So there has been when she was really young, there
- 33:47Speaker 1: was this I feel like it was MySpace, but that's
- 33:50Speaker 1: definitely not.
- 33:50Speaker 2: But it was giving the vibe of MySpace.
- 33:53Speaker 1: And she wrote a story about Haites like Greek gods,
- 33:57Speaker 1: and she loves Greek gods. She referenced them in this
- 33:59Speaker 1: how Alien was inspired by Athena coming out of Zeus's
- 34:03Speaker 1: head fully formed, like she loves Greek mythology, and I
- 34:06Speaker 1: love Greek mythology, and I just think it would be
- 34:10Speaker 1: really nice my birthdays on the nineteenth. The vaprol s
- 34:13Speaker 1: if you could write a little Greek mythology book for me,
- 34:16Speaker 1: I would love that. That would be ten out of ten,
- 34:19Speaker 1: I would love that.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Be great. Maybe Pisephone and Hades retelling. I would gobble
- 34:24Speaker 2: that shit up. I would gobble it up immediately. But
- 34:29Speaker 2: that is a wrap. Those are the highlights of the
- 34:33Speaker 2: Sarah J. Mass And Call Her Daddy interview. Quick little edit.
- 34:37Speaker 1: She actually said there are four parts of this story
- 34:40Speaker 1: for Akata, not three, but the fourth part.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Is going to be a completely separate book that doesn't
- 34:45Speaker 2: have a date. Apologies for that, however, what a feast.
- 34:50Speaker 2: I feel fully fully filled and.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Eaten, feel like I've had my dinner, my breakfast, my lunch,
- 34:57Speaker 1: a little snack.
- 34:58Speaker 2: I think she did a really good job. I think
- 35:01Speaker 2: it was also really nice to see that she does
- 35:03Speaker 2: have this like silly, little goofy side.
- 35:04Speaker 1: She's giggling and telling stories, and it's really important to
- 35:08Speaker 1: see her, you know, as a person, because it's so easy.
- 35:11Speaker 2: To be like, give me the books. Yeah, like that's me.
- 35:14Speaker 2: I've done that. I am the gremlin going give me
- 35:17Speaker 2: the book the era.
- 35:18Speaker 1: But it was just really really fun to see Romance,
- 35:22Speaker 1: to see getting the platform that it deserves, to see
- 35:25Speaker 1: a book that is so centered around empowering women and
- 35:30Speaker 1: women's pleasure and joy having this platform and having such
- 35:34Speaker 1: a beautiful community and audience that.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Are so passionate about it. So I hope you guys
- 35:38Speaker 2: also enjoyed this episode.
- 35:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna be getting back into doing these more regularly.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Maybe not weekly. I would love to do weekly.
- 35:47Speaker 1: But we're going to aim for monthly or fortnightly and
- 35:49Speaker 1: slowly increase from there.
- 35:52Speaker 2: I'm so happy to be back to here.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Thanks to Audible for making this episode of book Club happen,
- 35:56Speaker 1: and don't forget to listen to Full Throttle out now
- 35:59Speaker 1: on Audible
