Transcript
- 0:30Welcome back listeners to Sandman Stories Presents, a
- 0:33folklore podcast where I read you to sleep or until the next
- 0:36story. I'm your host, Dustin, and today
- 0:39we are back in the book of Creole folklore collected by Al
- 0:42C Fortier. Today I'll be reading three
- 0:46stories. In the first, Mr. Monkey wants
- 0:49to get married but his friend is a hater.
- 0:52In the second, a tortoise turns to stone.
- 0:55And in the third one, Brother Hyena learns that you don't go
- 0:59around telling everyone that you had eggs for breakfast.
- 1:03OK, let's begin. Mr. Monkey, the bridegroom there
- 1:09was a monkey which fell in love with a beautiful young girl.
- 1:13He dressed as a man and went to call on her.
- 1:17He was so well received that one day he took his best friend with
- 1:20him to see his Ladylove. The young girl's father asked
- 1:23Mr. Monkey's friends with questions about his daughter's
- 1:25lover. The friend said that Mister
- 1:28Monkey was good and rich, but there was a secret about him.
- 1:32The father wanted to know the secret, but the friend said he
- 1:35would tell him another day. Mr. Monkey was finally engaged
- 1:39to the young lady, and on the night of the wedding he invited
- 1:42his friend to the supper. The latter was jealous of Mr.
- 1:46Monkey and at the end of the supper he began to sing.
- 1:50This was a song that made all monkeys dance whether they
- 1:53wished to or not. So Mr. Monkey looked at his
- 1:57friend and beckoned him to stop singing.
- 2:00He continued, however, to sing, and all at once Mr. Monkey got
- 2:04up and began to dance. He jumped about so wildly that
- 2:08his tail came out of his clothes and everyone saw that he was a
- 2:11monkey. The father understood the secret
- 2:14and beat him dreadfully. His friend, however, ran off
- 2:18dancing and singing. THE END
- 2:39Okay and story #2, The Tortoise. A gentleman who was living on
- 2:45the banks of a Bayou caught a large tortoise and went
- 2:48immediately to invite some friends to take dinner with him.
- 2:52His little boy, in his absence, went to the cage where the
- 2:54tortoise was, and the latter began to whistle.
- 2:58How well you whistle, said the child.
- 3:01Oh, that is nothing. Open the cage and you will see.
- 3:05The boy opened the cage and the tortoise whistled better than
- 3:09ever. The boy was delighted.
- 3:12Put me down on the floor and you will see, said the tortoise.
- 3:16The boy did so, and the tortoise danced and sang.
- 3:20Oh, how well you dance and sing, said the boy.
- 3:24Put me on the Bank of the Bayou, and you will see, said the
- 3:27tortoise. The boy took her to the Bayou,
- 3:30and the tortoise danced and sang all at once.
- 3:34She disappeared in the water, and the boy began to cry.
- 3:38The tortoise rose in the middle of the Bayou and said, learn not
- 3:42to trust hereafter people whom you do not know.
- 3:47The boy was afraid of his father and put a large flat stone in
- 3:50the cage. The cook, thinking it was the
- 3:53tortoise, put the stone into the kettle.
- 3:57She was astonished to see it remain hard so long, and she
- 4:00called her master's attention to it.
- 4:03He ordered the tortoise be put up on the table, and he took his
- 4:05table knife to cut it. It was in vain.
- 4:09He took the carving knife, in vain he took the hatchet in vain
- 4:16He took the axe. He broke the dish as the table,
- 4:19but the tortoise remained intact.
- 4:21When then he saw it was a stone and to this day he has not
- 4:26understood how his tortoise was changed into a stone.
- 4:30The end Okay and story #3.
- 4:49Brother Hyena, Brother Rabbit and the bird's eggs.
- 4:54Brother Hyena and Brother Rabbit were neighbors.
- 4:58One day, Brother Hyena said to himself that he wished to see
- 5:01what Brother Rabbit was cooking every evening in his cabin.
- 5:05He went to Brother Rabbit's cabin and saw a big kettle on
- 5:08the fire. Oh, what a toothache I have.
- 5:12Brother Rabbit, what do you have in that kettle?
- 5:16It is not your business. Brother Hyena.
- 5:20What smells so good in that kettle, Brother Rabbit?
- 5:23Oh, what a toothache I have. It is birds eggs.
- 5:27Brother Hyena, don't bother me. Oh, what a toothache I have.
- 5:34Let me taste what you have there.
- 5:35It will cure me. Brother Rabbit gave him a few
- 5:40eggs and Brother Hyena found them so good that he wished to
- 5:42know where they were to be found.
- 5:45Brother Rabbit told him that he would take him.
- 5:47The next day. Brother Hyena went home and told
- 5:51his mother that he had a splendid supper at Brother
- 5:53Rabbits. His mother told him to open his
- 5:56mouth so that she might smell what it was that he had eaten.
- 6:00Then she took a small piece of wood and scraped off the teeth
- 6:03of Brother Hyena the small pieces of eggs that remained
- 6:05there. Oh, how good it is, she said.
- 6:09You must get me some. Brother Hyena went early the
- 6:13next morning with Brother Rabbit, who showed him where the
- 6:16eggs were and told him not to take more than one from each
- 6:18nest because the birds would perceive it.
- 6:22Brother Hyena, however, as soon as Rabbit was gone, took all the
- 6:25eggs from every nest. When the birds were turned and
- 6:28saw that all the eggs had been stolen, they were furious and
- 6:32formed a plan to avenge themselves.
- 6:35There was in the woods a Bayou, which was the only place where
- 6:38animals could drink. The birds placed themselves
- 6:42around the Bayou and saw an ox coming.
- 6:44Brother Cow, was it you who ate our eggs?
- 6:49No, my friends, I eat nothing but grass.
- 6:54The horse said he ate nothing but hay.
- 6:56Brother Rabbit said that he ate nothing but carrots and lettuce.
- 6:59But when they questioned Brother Hyena, he replied foolishly.
- 7:03Yes, it is I who ate your eggs. No sooner had he spoken when the
- 7:08birds fell upon him, they put out his eyes and nearly tore him
- 7:11to pieces. The END
- 7:31the first story made me laugh out loud.
- 7:32At the first time I read it, Mr. Monkey getting blocked by his
- 7:35friend by making him do a dance was pretty funny.
- 7:38The second one I really like because the tortoise was able to
- 7:40outsmart the kid. And the third story is a great
- 7:43example of knowing when to keep your big mouth shut.
- 7:47I was a little grossed out by picking the eggs out of the
- 7:49teeth, but hey, that's how the story goes.
- 7:52I'm looking forward to more stories from this book and the
- 7:56podcast. Shout Out is to The Strange
- 7:58Animals with Kate Shaw. This is a really good short
- 8:02podcast, usually around 8 to 10 minutes and it covers an animal
- 8:06or group of animals or a new discovery.
- 8:09Kate Shaw not only does the research and everything for the
- 8:11podcast, but she's also written a couple of books, one on lesser
- 8:14known but very cool animals and two fiction books.
- 8:18And if you like her show as much as I do, go and give her a
- 8:21listen, a rating and a review and the listener shout out is to
- 8:25Cairo, Egypt. I was first introduced to the
- 8:28cool alleyways in pack City of Cairo in the books by Nagib
- 8:31Mafuz, then one of my favorite M C's One Below.
- 8:35Half of the group Binary Star moved his family out there and
- 8:39I've kept up with his Instagram and his music.
- 8:42It looks like an awesome city and I would love to smoke the
- 8:44Nagila and have a cup of coffee with him while watching people
- 8:48pass by. And so to my listeners from
- 8:51Masri, especially Cairo, I say I love Shukran.
- 8:56What is belocher? Thank you and good night.
