- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at
- 0:20fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for listening.
- 0:26This morning Scripture comes from the book of Romans, all of
- 0:31chapter 12. Therefore, I urge you, brothers
- 0:35and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a
- 0:40living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.
- 0:44This is your true and proper worship.
- 0:48Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed
- 0:52by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test
- 0:56and approve what God's will is, His good, pleasing, and perfect
- 1:02will. For by the grace given me, I say
- 1:06to everyone of you, do not think of yourself more highly than you
- 1:10ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment in
- 1:14accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.
- 1:18For just as each of us has one body with many members, and
- 1:23these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ
- 1:27we though many form 1 body, and each member belongs to all the
- 1:33others. We have different gifts
- 1:35according to the grace given to each of us.
- 1:38If your gift is prophesying, then prophecy, prophecy in
- 1:42accordance with your faith. If it is serving, then serve.
- 1:46If it is teaching, then teach. If it is to encourage, then give
- 1:51encouragement. If it is giving, then give
- 1:54generously. If it is to lead, do it
- 1:57diligently. If it is to show mercy, do it
- 2:00cheerfully. Love must be sincere.
- 2:05Hate what is evil, cling to what is good.
- 2:08Be devoted to one another and love honour one another above
- 2:13yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but
- 2:16keep your spiritual fervor serving the Lord.
- 2:20Be joyful in hope, patient and affliction, Faithful in prayer.
- 2:25Share with the Lord's people who are in need.
- 2:28Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you.
- 2:33Bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice.
- 2:37Mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one
- 2:41another. Do not be proud, but be willing
- 2:44to associate with people of low position.
- 2:47Do not be conceited. Do not repay an anyone evil for
- 2:51evil. Be careful to do what is right
- 2:54in the eyes of everyone if it is possible.
- 2:57As far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
- 3:02Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for
- 3:06God's wrath, for it is written, it is mine to avenge.
- 3:10I will repay, says the Lord. On the contrary, if your enemy
- 3:15is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him
- 3:18something to drink, and doing this you will keep burning coals
- 3:22on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but
- 3:26overcome evil with good. This is the word of God for the
- 3:29people of God. Thanks be to God.
- 3:33Amen. Back in my college days at
- 3:39Asbury, I took Western Civil. Wanted to anybody else take
- 3:44Western Civil somewhere along the way?
- 3:45Yeah. I took it from the same
- 3:48professor both semesters. Dr. Span.
- 3:52Now, Doctor Span was the kind of kind of professor that you
- 3:59either loved or you didn't, right?
- 4:03I, I love to study history and I loved learning from Doctor
- 4:07Spann. Meg, not so much.
- 4:10That's OK. One thing that you did not want
- 4:16to ask Doctor Spann was whether or not something was going to be
- 4:23on the test. He didn't appreciate that
- 4:27question. He, he felt that everything in
- 4:30his class was worth learning, whether it was on the test or
- 4:35not. And, and, and The thing is,
- 4:37Doctor Spann's tests were a bit notorious.
- 4:42They were primarily multiple choice questions, which is
- 4:46great. Sounds good.
- 4:48But I remember at least once that the multiple choice options
- 4:52went through letter Q, which if you're already starting to count
- 4:57in your head, is the 17th letter of the alphabet.
- 5:03And that doesn't mean that there were 17 distinct options, right?
- 5:0817 different things. Choose the right one.
- 5:10No, no, no, no, no. There were probably about 6
- 5:13answers in there, A through F and then the rest of the options
- 5:17were things like letters A through C or BC and E or B
- 5:24through F but not D You didn't have to choose the right answer,
- 5:30you had to choose the best answer or try to anyway.
- 5:38Now, for many people within the church, much of their
- 5:41familiarity with spiritual gifts revolves around the idea of of
- 5:46taking some kind of assessment. Right?
- 5:48A spiritual gifts test. You answer a bunch of questions,
- 5:52you tally up the scores, you see which scores are the highest,
- 5:56and boom, there's your spiritual gifts.
- 6:00Anyone ever take a test like that?
- 6:03I have. I have a version of it sitting
- 6:05on a shelf in my office. What usually happens after a
- 6:10test like that? What usually happens?
- 6:13All right, I can't hear your answers.
- 6:17Chances are, unfortunately, not much, right?
- 6:23A lot of times we take those tests, we we try to identify
- 6:27spiritual gifts and then we don't really talk about it much
- 6:31after that. Here's the thing about spiritual
- 6:34gifts tests, though. They can't actually tell you
- 6:39where you're spiritually gifted. OK, these spiritual gifts tests,
- 6:46they can't actually tell you where you're spiritually gifted.
- 6:50That's because even the best of these tests, they can't
- 6:54distinguish between spiritual gifts and the other things we've
- 6:58talked about, natural abilities, acquired skills.
- 7:02A test can only judge what you have experienced with, not where
- 7:08you're supernaturally empowered for ministry to the church.
- 7:13So for me, shepherding often comes up on a spiritual gifts
- 7:18test if I were to take it. That's largely because of the
- 7:22role I I've been called to as a pastor, right?
- 7:25And when I'm asked a question like this is a real question
- 7:29from a spiritual gifts test, I feel a responsibility to nurture
- 7:34others in Christian discipleship.
- 7:38Yeah, it kind of comes with the territory, right?
- 7:42Of course I feel that. Does that mean I'm spiritually
- 7:45gifted as a shepherd? Not necessarily, but it can
- 7:50point me to things that are worth exploring.
- 7:55But here's another thing about spiritual gifts test They only
- 8:00can take into account our own experiences, right?
- 8:05Which means that they can only ever reflect on things that we
- 8:09have already experienced. How could you know, for
- 8:14instance, if you have the spiritual gift of interpreting
- 8:19tongues, if you've never been in a context where someone was
- 8:22speaking in tongues? How do you know if you have the
- 8:26gift of healing if you've grown up and been formed in a church
- 8:31that believes the power gifts stopped with the 12 apostles,
- 8:37right? That's a doctrine called
- 8:38cessationism. I don't believe that.
- 8:44How can you know you have maybe the gifts of helps or mercy if
- 8:51you've never been told that those are gifts given by the
- 8:56Holy Spirit and empowered by the Spirit for building up the
- 9:00church? The short answer is, you can't.
- 9:05That's why we're taking this time through this series and
- 9:09into the summer to teach on the gifts of the Spirit, to begin to
- 9:13build some, some common language around these ideas to be able to
- 9:20begin to identify the gifts we and others have been given.
- 9:27So that we can begin to exercise the gifts we've been given and,
- 9:31and grow in our cooperation with the Holy Spirit to, to define
- 9:37some, some house rules right, for how those gifts are going to
- 9:41be used here in this congregation of the church.
- 9:47Last thing I'll say about spiritual gifts test, at least
- 9:51for the next 3 minutes, is that when you go online, you find a
- 9:56random spiritual gifts test and, and be honest.
- 10:01How many of you have already done that since we started this
- 10:03sermon series? Anybody, couple people.
- 10:07OK, all right. No judgement there.
- 10:10But when you found that random gifts test online, how do you
- 10:16know you agree with the theology that underlies that test?
- 10:21Do you even know what the theology is?
- 10:23Do do you know what your theology of spiritual gifts is?
- 10:28Do you know what the, the, what gifts the author of that online
- 10:33test believes are gifts and therefore are even possible to
- 10:37get as a result on the test, right?
- 10:41Not all spiritual gifts tests are created equal.
- 10:46There's underlying presumptions, assumptions underneath all of
- 10:52them. And we've been talking a lot
- 10:56about spiritual gifts over the past month here in our Sunday
- 11:00morning services, in our sermon series, in in our Wednesday
- 11:04night study of supernatural, in our Sunday school classes.
- 11:07You all are talking about some of these things, and I'm sure at
- 11:11least a few of you are probably wondering how do we discover
- 11:18what gifts we have? If it's true that the Holy
- 11:21Spirit gives every believer at least one spiritual gift, how do
- 11:26I know what mine is? Especially if we're not supposed
- 11:31to go take a test. Well, I want to answer that
- 11:35question this more. Give some practical things that
- 11:38can help us discover what spiritual gifts the Holy Spirit
- 11:42has given to us. But not before we take a look at
- 11:45that scripture passage that Jeremy read for us from Romans
- 11:49chapter 12. This is one of the key passages
- 11:52in the New Testament when it comes on comes to teaching on
- 11:56the spiritual gifts, right? We've got this one, We've got
- 11:59First Corinthians 12 through 14. We've been spending a lot of
- 12:02time there. There's Ephesians 4, a couple
- 12:04other small places, but this is one of the main ones.
- 12:06And so I just want to walk for a couple minutes through the
- 12:11structure of Romans 12 and kind of give an interpretation,
- 12:16highlight some things that go into discovering our spiritual
- 12:21gifts, right? This is Paul teaching the the
- 12:26Roman Church, and by extension US today.
- 12:31So this chapter begins with Paul calling the Christians in Rome
- 12:37to surrender, right? To to offer themselves as a
- 12:40living sacrifice. You can't offer yourself as a
- 12:45sacrifice without a deep level of surrender.
- 12:49Because you know what happens with a sacrifice, right?
- 12:52It gets burnt up on the altar, right?
- 12:55There's surrender involved there.
- 12:58That's the first step, surrendering to what God might
- 13:01have for us. Then Paul says that we need to
- 13:05have our minds renewed, our thinking, how we think about the
- 13:11world and what God's doing. We need to have our minds
- 13:14renewed, which leads then to transformed lives, because it's
- 13:20only then that we'll be able to know what God's will is, which I
- 13:25believe includes the spiritual gifts he gives his children.
- 13:30This whole conversation about spiritual gifts has to be
- 13:35approached in a deep level of humility, right?
- 13:40We're we're discovering, we're learning.
- 13:43That's going to involve some trial and error, right?
- 13:48We're not always going to get it right as we learn to operate
- 13:51within these spiritual gifts. There's a humility there, and
- 13:56there's a humility because we have to remember that none of
- 14:00the gifts of God are given because we're worthy.
- 14:06Even the faith we have has been given as a gift from God because
- 14:11of who He is, not because of who we are.
- 14:16And then, just as we saw in First Corinthians 12, Paul again
- 14:20says that there are different gifts for different people,
- 14:25right? This is clear teaching.
- 14:29We don't all have the same gifts, and these gifts are given
- 14:33in accordance with the grace that's given to each one of us.
- 14:39This is in accordance. Oh, sorry, I just said that
- 14:42there. But there's a fun little word
- 14:44play going on here in the Greek here in verse 6.
- 14:50Let's pull up that verse. It says we have different gifts
- 14:53according to the grace given to each of us.
- 14:56And what it says there is that we have different charisma
- 15:00according to the chorus given to each of us.
- 15:05Grace and gifts are intimately linked.
- 15:10You can't talk about gifts without talking about grace.
- 15:16It's, it's only by God's grace that these gifts are given.
- 15:21Paul then give some encouragement to use your gifts.
- 15:27Well, no matter what they are, no matter whether you think you
- 15:31have a really important gift or or maybe you think you have a
- 15:34not so important gift, I, I promise you they're all
- 15:38important and they're all given for the purpose of building up
- 15:42the church. So use your gift.
- 15:44Well. Paul says if, if your gift is to
- 15:46prophecy, then prophecy. Well, if it's to give, give
- 15:50generously. If it's to serve or to, to offer
- 15:53mercy, then do it cheerfully. Use your gift well.
- 16:00And then there's a whole section that we're not going to get into
- 16:03this morning on the character that needs to be formed in us as
- 16:09the people of God, right? Just like First Corinthians 13
- 16:12sandwiched right in that conversation about spiritual
- 16:17gifts. And, and it begins with love.
- 16:20Love must be sincere. And then Paul goes on to
- 16:25describe exactly what that love looks like in contrast to good
- 16:30and evil, and what it looks like to operate as a person of
- 16:33goodness who follows a God who's good.
- 16:38But what Paul doesn't tell us here in Romans 12, what Paul
- 16:46doesn't tell us in in First Corinthians 13 or 1212 or 13 or
- 16:5014, what Paul doesn't tell, what the New Testament doesn't tell
- 16:54us, is how we determine what gifts we've been given.
- 17:00It's not there. In fact, nowhere in the New
- 17:02Testament does it give a prescription for how we come to
- 17:05know what gifts we've been given.
- 17:09So what do we do? I'm glad you asked.
- 17:13With our remaining time, I want to give you 6 tools, 6
- 17:20principles, 6 things to keep in mind to help you discover where
- 17:25you are spiritually gifted. Things that I think have been
- 17:30proven over time and across a wide swath of people.
- 17:34And these aren't necessarily tools that I've identified.
- 17:38Much of this comes from John Thompson's teaching at Sanctus
- 17:42Church, his teaching on spiritual gifts.
- 17:46But it's been confirmed in my own experience, and I've seen it
- 17:51confirmed in the lives of others.
- 17:55So here we go, 6 tools to help you discover your spiritual
- 18:00gifts #1 Connect the dots. Connect the dots.
- 18:07You remember doing Connect the dots when you were a kid.
- 18:11There are numbered dots on a blank part of a picture, and as
- 18:14you drew a straight line from each dot, you'd see, you know
- 18:18the number the dots were numbered, and then as you
- 18:21connected them, you'd see a picture start to come together
- 18:24and you eventually drew the outline of of that image onto
- 18:28the picture. Same principle applies to
- 18:31gifting, right? If if you're serving the church
- 18:35and something happens once, well, that might be an exception
- 18:41or a coincidence. If something starts to happen
- 18:43twice, well, now that's, that's an interesting coincidence.
- 18:49If something happens 345 times, that's when you really need to
- 18:56start paying attention and connecting the dots, right?
- 19:03If a potential gift shows up repeatedly across different
- 19:08situations over time, that may be a sign that you've been
- 19:14gifted in that area. Emphasis on the maybe, right?
- 19:19We still need to do some more digging, some more praying
- 19:22there. So that's, that's tool #1 though
- 19:24connect the dots, tool #2 points of frustration, points of
- 19:33frustration. We're talking about those places
- 19:38where you consistently feel frustrated with the church that
- 19:44may point to your spiritual gifts.
- 19:49Now, I'm not talking about the things that rub up against your
- 19:52personal preferences, right? Like whether we sing from the
- 19:56hymnal or we sing from the screen.
- 19:59Now, I'm not talking about other people in the church who
- 20:03frustrate us, right? Not that anybody here has
- 20:07identified those people. I mean things when I'm talking
- 20:12about points of frustration. I mean things that when you look
- 20:15around the church, you're frustrated that it's not being
- 20:18done more or or it's not being done well enough.
- 20:23For example, you might walk around saying we just don't pray
- 20:27enough in this church. That may be true, but it also
- 20:34may indicate that you've been given a gift of intercession.
- 20:39You might listen to conversations around the church
- 20:43and think, wow, we've got a lot of of really big ideas.
- 20:47We've got a lot of good ideas, how come no one ever makes them
- 20:52happen? Might point to a gift of
- 20:56administration, right? Those places of frustration are
- 21:02an indicator that that maybe we should dig in a little deeper to
- 21:07what's going on there. 3rd tool, we're going to keep moving this
- 21:13morning, so keep up. The third tool is the power tool
- 21:18principle, right? Anybody remember home
- 21:22improvement from the 90s? Yeah, a few of you not, not
- 21:26talking about Tim Taylor kind of power tool principles, but but
- 21:29this principle gets into the question of whether we're doing
- 21:33a task out of gifting or out of discipline.
- 21:41Are we doing it because we're gifted or are we doing it
- 21:44because it's a good thing and as Christians we should be doing
- 21:46it? They're both good.
- 21:49But if you think about cutting down a tree, if you think about
- 21:53cutting down a tree, there are multiple tools that you can use
- 21:58to do that job. But cutting down a tree is going
- 22:03to be far easier if I can do it with a chainsaw rather than an
- 22:09axe, right? Both are going to cut down the
- 22:13tree, but the chainsaw does it with far more ease.
- 22:20A spiritual gift that God's given, that the Holy Spirit
- 22:24empowers, it comes with a sense of spirit enabled ease and
- 22:30effectiveness. Ease and effectiveness that go
- 22:35beyond what discipline alone can achieve.
- 22:41Some of you hear about opportunities to go serve the
- 22:44homeless, maybe with Seeds of Hope or something like that, or
- 22:48to work with teen moms like we did at Christmas time with Young
- 22:52Lives. And you're like, sign me up, of
- 22:55course I'll sign up. Why would anybody not sign up to
- 22:59do that? You might have a gift of mercy.
- 23:05I do not. I have to choose to do those
- 23:10things. It doesn't come naturally or
- 23:13even super naturally for me. That kind of ministry is a
- 23:18discipline, not a gift. But for you, you might have a
- 23:24gift of mercy. And you think everybody should
- 23:26have a gift of mercy. I get it.
- 23:31Power tools. Next, the lost sheep principle.
- 23:40You all know that that parable that Jesus told 1 sheep who
- 23:45wanders off and what does Jesus do?
- 23:49He leaves the 99 to go find that one sheep.
- 23:55How many of you, if you were the shepherd in that parable, are
- 24:02going to go after the 1 sheep? Three of you.
- 24:07OK, how many of you are going to stay with the 99 sheep?
- 24:13All right, a few more of you. I'm going to ask it the first
- 24:14one again, how many of you are going after the 1 sheep?
- 24:17You see that one sheep on or off?
- 24:18You're like, man, I got to go get that sheep before he gets
- 24:21hurt. All right.
- 24:23It can be helpful to recognize whether you naturally focus more
- 24:30on the group or on the individual, because some
- 24:36spiritual gifts that the Spirit gives are oriented towards
- 24:40serving large groups, while others are geared more towards
- 24:44ministering to a single person, and some can have different
- 24:47expressions that aim at both. For instance, if you have the
- 24:53gift of leadership, you're probably focused on the 99.
- 25:00You're probably not going to leave the 99 just for the sake
- 25:03of the wand because leaders lead groups.
- 25:08But if you have a gift of mercy, gift of compassion, you might
- 25:14feel pulled toward either 1. You might be pulled toward the
- 25:18group, but you might say, well, what about Martha?
- 25:22We got to go after poor Martha, before something happens to her,
- 25:26before she gets lost, she's sick at home.
- 25:29We got to go and we got to serve for Martha.
- 25:34Got to pay attention to whether you're oriented to the one or
- 25:39the many, because it might help direct or interpret how you
- 25:43experience the gifts you've been given #5 I think we're up to
- 25:50where is good fruit produced, right?
- 25:55This is the good fruit test. When you engage in that
- 26:00ministry, whatever that ministry happens to be, what comes up
- 26:03inside of you, right? Is this ministry that you're
- 26:07involved in something that brings you joy?
- 26:11When you're doing this ministry, do you sense that God is close
- 26:16to you, His nearness, His delight in you when you're doing
- 26:20that thing, do those on the receiving end of the ministry
- 26:26you're offering, do they feel loved?
- 26:29Do they feel ministered too? Jesus said we would know false
- 26:34teachers by their fruit, but I think the same is true of
- 26:38spiritual gifts. I'm sure at some point you've
- 26:42seen someone stand up and preach a message and at the end of it
- 26:46you're like, well, that was that was something.
- 26:53Thanks for teaching. Maybe don't do it again, right?
- 26:58We've all heard it. Maybe there's been a time when
- 27:02someone has come to share something with you and you
- 27:06received it, you appreciated it. But then you're like, wait a
- 27:10minute. That kind of stung a little bit.
- 27:15It's like they they hugged you, then they slapped you, then they
- 27:19hugged you again, right? That's the gift of exhortation.
- 27:25It's an encouragement that comes a little strong sometimes, but
- 27:32it can help to look at the fruit it's produced in you, produced
- 27:36in other people, when you're doing that ministry last 1.
- 27:42And in a way, this principle underlies everything I've said
- 27:47up to this point. All the other things we want to
- 27:50look at, all the other considerations we want to make,
- 27:52this one underlies everything I've said to this point.
- 27:56And that is that community is key.
- 28:01Community is key, and it's key because it is almost impossible
- 28:09to discover your spiritual gifts in isolation.
- 28:16It's almost impossible to discover how the Spirit has
- 28:21gifted you in isolation because sometimes others can see in you
- 28:29what you can't see in yourself. Sometimes we need to call out
- 28:34the gifts that we see operating in others because they don't
- 28:37recognize it. They they either don't know that
- 28:40it's a gift or they just think this is the way everybody is and
- 28:44should be. They think they're just doing
- 28:46what a good Christian does. And doesn't everybody do it that
- 28:50way or see it that way? And besides, the whole point of
- 28:56the spiritual gifts is to build up the church, right?
- 29:01Which implies that other people will be a part of you using your
- 29:05gifts. Community is key because we need
- 29:10the balance of all the gifts that we don't have, especially
- 29:18balance across those categories of love gifts, word gifts, power
- 29:22gifts that we talked about a few weeks ago.
- 29:25None of us are given all of the gifts, and none of us can do all
- 29:30the church is called to do on our own.
- 29:33We need one another, and we need one another's gifts.
- 29:38It's the only way the body of Christ will be healthy.
- 29:44So you want to know where you're spiritually gifted?
- 29:51Don't take a test you find online.
- 29:54Start a conversation with a trusted friend.
- 30:00Ask them, what do you see in me that I might not see in myself?
- 30:05When when I'm doing ministry, where do you see me come alive,
- 30:08right? Pay attention to what brings you
- 30:12joy and the fruit that's produced.
- 30:14Connect the dots. Oh, this kind of this keeps
- 30:19happening. Maybe there's something there
- 30:22and another one that that didn't even make it onto the list.
- 30:27Ask God. Ask God what your spiritual,
- 30:33what He's given you as, as your spiritual gifts and listen for
- 30:38an answer, right? He's given me so much helpful
- 30:43clarity in this area, even over the past few months.
- 30:47Ask Him what are my spiritual gifts and ask Him what are not
- 30:56my spiritual gifts. What what are gifts?
- 31:00I think maybe I have that you haven't given me, or you've
- 31:05given as a natural ability, or I've learned to do it as an
- 31:09acquired skill. Ask him, ask him and be open
- 31:17because there might be things that that you've never even
- 31:20considered and he wants to use you to build up his church, our
- 31:26congregation, through the gifts he's given you.
- 31:34Here you go, 6-7 things to pay attention to as you're trying to
- 31:44figure out how God has gifted you.
- 31:48Let's pray together father, we come to you today and we're so
- 31:58grateful that you are a giver of good gifts.
- 32:05James says every good and perfect gift comes from you.
- 32:09Father of Lights and Jesus said that if we as sinful, evil
- 32:20people know to give our children a fish when they ask for a fish,
- 32:29how much more will you, Father, give the Holy Spirit to those
- 32:33who ask? So we're asking God, would you
- 32:38pour out your Spirit on us? Would you help us to discover
- 32:45the ways you've uniquely gifted each of us to serve your Church
- 32:52and to advance your Kingdom purposes in the world we want to
- 33:00live like Jesus lived, surrendered to you Father, and
- 33:06empowered by you, Holy Spirit. So would you help us as we
- 33:14discover? Would you help us be open to
- 33:17listen, to trust, to look to you, and to trust you in that
- 33:27gifting? Would you speak clearly to us
- 33:35about you, about how you've gifted us and how you've not
- 33:39gifted us so we can cooperate with what you want to do in the
- 33:45world around us? We love you, we give you
- 33:52ourselves, and we pray this Jesus in your name, Amen.
