- 0:14woman, boy, and girl must come to Jesus, just like the woman at the well in John chapter 4.
- 0:20Our highest priority is helping you experience the reality of God in your everyday life.
- 0:26Whether you're listening in our app, on your favorite podcast platform,
- 0:30or on our website at watwm.org,
- 0:34We invite you to sit down with us as we open the scriptures to learn more about
- 0:39who God is and to strengthen your daily walk.
- 1:03The story of Elijah and the juniper tree in 1 Kings 19 tells of a great prophet,
- 1:09Elijah, who falls into deep despair and exhaustion, and how God meets him with gentle care.
- 1:17In seasons of fear, exhaustion, and discouragement, God meets us with grace,
- 1:23speaks to us personally, and gives us renewed purpose.
- 1:28Join us in this podcast of Woman at the Well Ministries as Kim takes us on a
- 1:32journey through the scriptures, revealing that God doesn't abandon his servants in the wilderness.
- 1:38He restores them there and sends them forward with renewed purpose.
- 1:45Hello, and thank you for this time that you have chosen to spend at the foot
- 1:51of the cross with me and Jesus.
- 1:55I know that this is a message that God has given that is filled with hope,
- 2:02is filled with comfort, is filled with joy, and above all, I believe it's filled with purpose.
- 2:10I believe that all of us experience wilderness moments.
- 2:14We experience moments in our lives when we feel like the Israelites did when
- 2:20they were just circling round and round and round and round for years and years and years.
- 2:25And as we read the account of that, we just see they cyclically fall into familiar sins,
- 2:34that they often are ungrateful, and many times they just do the same wrong thing,
- 2:43and they complain and they're frustrated.
- 2:46Life for us, all these many years later, isn't all that different.
- 2:52Life holds for us disappointments. Some that are inevitable, people we love will die.
- 2:59Things that we used to do, we will not be able to do later.
- 3:04Some are disappointments that we are not prepared at all to have.
- 3:10We don't get the job we think that we should get in our workplace.
- 3:14Someone we love betrays us we find ourselves in in an illness or a sickness,
- 3:23for each of us our wilderness looks very different there are some similarities,
- 3:30but we each have our own wilderness and sometimes we go in and out of that wilderness,
- 3:38sometimes we choose to stay in the wilderness because we choose to reject and
- 3:43ignore what god has for us some people will look at you when you're in a wilderness
- 3:49and they'll judge you and condemn you,
- 3:53but today i want to bring into your hearing,
- 3:59how scripture accounts.
- 4:03For Elijah's stint in the wilderness.
- 4:08Elijah had just defeated Jezebel and all of her people.
- 4:19He wins this massive spiritual victory on Mount Carmel, proving the power of
- 4:23God over all of the prophets of Baal.
- 4:27But when Queen Jezebel, who is wicked, hears of this, she threatens his life.
- 4:38Telling him that she vows she will kill him before the next day.
- 4:42He has just had a massive victory.
- 4:47And when we get in 1 Kings 19, Elijah's on the run.
- 4:52And this, my friend, is the beginning of his time in the wilderness.
- 5:02If you would please, and are able, please read with me, beginning in verse 1
- 5:08of 1 Kings chapter 19, and we will read through 21.
- 5:13And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain
- 5:19all the prophets with the sword.
- 5:22Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me,
- 5:27and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.
- 5:34And when he saw that, he arose, and he went for his life, and came to Beersheba,
- 5:39which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.
- 5:43But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a juniper tree.
- 5:50And he requested for himself that he might die and said, It is enough now, O Lord.
- 5:56Take away my life, for I am not better than my father's.
- 6:01And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched
- 6:05him and said unto him, Arise and eat.
- 6:09And he looked, and behold, there was a cake, bacon on the coals,
- 6:12and a cruise of water at his head, and he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
- 6:18And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him,
- 6:21and said, Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for thee.
- 6:26And he arose, and he did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that,
- 6:30meet forty days and forty nights under Horeb the mount of God.
- 6:35And he came thither unto a cave and lodged there.
- 6:39And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him,
- 6:43What doest thou hear, Elijah?
- 6:47And he said, I have been very jealous, for the Lord God of hosts,
- 6:51for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars,
- 6:55and slain thy prophets with the sword, and I, even I, only am left,
- 7:01and they seek my life to take it away.
- 7:04And he said, Go forth, stand upon the mount before the Lord.
- 7:08And behold, the Lord passed by.
- 7:11And a great strong wind rent the mountains and break in pieces and rocks before
- 7:17the Lord. But the Lord was not in the wind.
- 7:20And after the wind, an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake.
- 7:24And after the earthquake, a fire. But the Lord was not in the fire.
- 7:28And after the fire, a still small voice.
- 7:32And it was so when Elijah heard it that he wrapped his face in his mantle,
- 7:37and he went out and he stood in the entering in of the cave.
- 7:41And behold, there came a voice unto him and said.
- 7:44What doest thou here, Elijah? And he said, I have been very jealous of the Lord,
- 7:49God of hosts, because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant,
- 7:54thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword.
- 7:58And I, even I, only am left.
- 8:02And they seek my life to take it away. And the Lord said unto him,
- 8:06Go return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus.
- 8:10And when thou comest anoint Hazael to be king over Syria, And Jehu,
- 8:15the son of Nimshi, shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel.
- 8:19And Elisha, the son of Shaphat, of Abel-Meholah, shalt thou anoint to be king,
- 8:26to be prophet in thy room.
- 8:28And it shall come to pass that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu
- 8:33slay, and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.
- 8:39Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed
- 8:44unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.
- 8:48So he departed thence and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with
- 8:53twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth.
- 8:58And Elijah passed by him and cast his mantle upon him.
- 9:02And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me,
- 9:05I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee.
- 9:10And he said unto him, Go back again, for what have I done to thee?
- 9:14And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them,
- 9:18and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat.
- 9:24Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
- 9:29May the Lord have his richest blessings upon the reading of his word.
- 9:35The theme of 1 Kings 19 is that God restores discouraged servants and he redirects
- 9:43them for continued service.
- 9:47When the devil comes knocking at your door and he's telling you that God is
- 9:52done with you, that's a lie. Because as long as you have breath,
- 9:57we are to praise the Lord.
- 9:59And if we are praising the Lord, we are lifting him up. And he says,
- 10:03if all men will be lifted up, he'll draw all men unto me. If we will lift him
- 10:08up, he will draw all men unto him.
- 10:12That's working for the Lord.
- 10:15The devil would desperately want you not to remember 1 John 1.9.
- 10:20This is if we confess our sins.
- 10:22He's faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 10:30Romans would be clear when it says that anything done without faith is sin,
- 10:35and when we are in the depths of despair, the first thing people want to tell us is, is be happy.
- 10:42Get over it. Stop sinning.
- 10:47Well, if it was that easy, this man of God, Elijah, would not find himself under a juniper tree.
- 10:54Each of us have our own juniper trees. The place that we have gone because the
- 10:59world has just depleted us.
- 11:03Because we've thrown up our hands in disgust and in stress and in frustration.
- 11:09And we said, enough is enough.
- 11:12When Elisha finds himself under this juniper tree, he says that exact words.
- 11:19Enough is enough, God.
- 11:22Just let me die. Each of us have been in situations.
- 11:28Where others have lent themselves to the devil and have been a tool in their
- 11:34hands and sometimes on purpose and other times indirectly,
- 11:39they have delivered blows that have just knocked the wind out of you.
- 11:45They have depleted you of every ounce of confidence in yourself,
- 11:51which there's a large amount of that takes to be able to tell somebody about Jesus.
- 11:56You got to have enough confidence to know that you have enough faith in Jesus
- 12:00that he's going to do what he says he'll do.
- 12:03It's not about you and your works, but it's hard to work for the Lord if you
- 12:07don't feel like you are valuable, if you don't feel like you can do it.
- 12:11It's hard to work for the Lord when everyone around you is giving you grief and
- 12:18just analyzing what you've done wrong and figuring out ways that you could be
- 12:23better and making up lies and delivering hurtful words to you.
- 12:28Elijah was under a juniper tree because he was afraid of Jezebel and the fact
- 12:35that he had been threatened for his life because he had done all these things.
- 12:41He had been working very hard.
- 12:43He was doing what he thought he could do, and now he's in danger.
- 12:47See, in 1 Kings 19, 1 through 4, what we see is Elijah isn't looking at his,
- 12:57recent spiritual victory, which was massive on Mount Carmel.
- 13:03Where the power of God overtook all the prophets of Baal. No,
- 13:07he is concentrating and contemplating that Jezebel,
- 13:15one woman, a wicked queen, but one woman, was going to kill him by that time the next day.
- 13:23And so he's overwhelmed by fear and fatigue.
- 13:28So Elijah runs for his life into the desert wilderness. He runs away.
- 13:35Trying to outrun his fear, trying to outrun his stress, trying to take care of himself by himself.
- 13:47He's totally forgotten what the power of God that God gave him and bestowed
- 13:54upon him had just recently done.
- 13:58And he begins to move his eyes off of the power of God and the power of God
- 14:05in his life, like we're told about in Ephesians 3.20, when he says,
- 14:10Now know unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we
- 14:14ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.
- 14:19He's not looking at God in him. And we know in 1 John 4.4, that greater is he
- 14:25that is in us than he that is in the world.
- 14:27So we need to not worry.
- 14:30As he tells us in Philippians 4.6 and 7, to be careful for nothing.
- 14:35But in everything, with prayer and thanksgiving, let your requests be made known
- 14:41unto God, and the peace of God shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
- 14:47What we see here is a natural reaction by a terribly tired, burnt-out,
- 14:56emotionally spent, tremendous man of God.
- 15:02And all of us, if we are honest with ourselves, we've been there.
- 15:08Some of us right now may be there.
- 15:11Others of us may be crossing over the valley, up the mountain,
- 15:16and we're almost on the top on the other side.
- 15:28Fatigue, scared, and honestly not sure that life is worth living.
- 15:35Some of us is because we've lost a loved one. Some of us is because we have
- 15:40children that have gone astray.
- 15:42Some of us is because we're at a pinnacle of our life and we're getting ready
- 15:47to retire, regardless of what it is that has thrown us into this state of confusion,
- 15:53state of frustration, state of exhaustion.
- 15:56Whatever it is that has caused us to be overwhelmed by fear and fatigue,
- 16:00we have run to the wilderness. We've run to the desert.
- 16:04And we're in need of renewal and refreshing.
- 16:08See, I think some of us think that if we are doing all the right things and
- 16:14we're doing what God would have us to do, that we're immune to emotional or physical exhaustion.
- 16:21See but spiritual victories don't make us immune to emotional physical exhaustion
- 16:26they make us targets for the devil to come after they,
- 16:31make us in a place where we we know we're doing the right thing but sometimes it is super duper hard,
- 16:39to continue moving on and we need others and we we need encouragement but we
- 16:44need time of renewal we need time in front of the lord We need time to hear what God has to say.
- 16:51We have to be constantly in communication. I'm convinced that's what he meant
- 16:57when he said that we are to pray without ceasing, because in our own minds,
- 17:01we will keep ourselves working and doing, and so we'll work so hard,
- 17:06and we'll be working and doing the things that we think God wants.
- 17:09We are so busy working for God that we forget the God we're working for.
- 17:15And I believe what you're seeing, Elijah.
- 17:18Is this very thing. I feel like Elijah is doing the right thing and he's pursuing
- 17:25God and he's pursuing the task at hand, but he's gotten a little bit too entangled,
- 17:33in the task,
- 17:34and he's forgotten,
- 17:36who God is.
- 17:38See, in seasons of fear and exhaustion and discouragement, God meets us with
- 17:43grace and he speaks to us personally and he gives us a renewed purpose.
- 17:48And it's this personal conversation. It's meeting us with grace that I want
- 17:53us to really look at as we understand we are going to face times in the wilderness,
- 18:00and it can discourage us,
- 18:03and when we get discouraged, our perspective gets all out of whack.
- 18:08We don't see things correctly. Elijah wasn't seeing the situation for what it was.
- 18:14His flesh was telling him he was done. It was enough.
- 18:20When we find ourselves in a situation where we are claiming we are done and
- 18:24it is enough, that is a surefire indicator. It's a red flag that we're doing it in our strength.
- 18:33Perhaps we might even be doing it in our own way. Because God provides all we
- 18:38need and he provides the strength for us to do it.
- 18:41He wrote that for us in Philippians 4, 13 and 19.
- 18:47See, you can't be ashamed to acknowledge our weakness before God.
- 18:52See, Elijah, when God asks him, hey, what are you doing? He tells him.
- 18:58He's done. It's over. He's disgusted and he's frustrated and he's afraid.
- 19:07But all through Scripture, we are told that perfect love casts out all fear.
- 19:12So elijah when he hears about jezebel in verses four and five we see that he
- 19:18walks a full day into the desert and he collapses in the shade of a juniper tree,
- 19:25in the shade in a quiet place,
- 19:30and he's completely depleted so he prays to die saying it is enough now oh lord take away my life.
- 19:38Had gotten to him. The weariness of the work had distorted his thoughts.
- 19:47And what he had done in great power, his mind was now causing him to be weak,
- 19:55fatigued, and exhausted, and afraid.
- 19:59So he prays to die. And he falls asleep under this tree, worn out by all the
- 20:05physical and emotional stress, and he's suffering from burnout if ever we've seen it.
- 20:13He's physically and emotionally exhausted.
- 20:17But in verses 5 through 8, we see how God provides and how God comes to this
- 20:24man of God, Elijah, and ministers to him.
- 20:29An angel of the Lord touches Elijah and tells him to wake up and eat.
- 20:34And when he wakes up, Elijah finds fresh bread baked on hot coals and a jug
- 20:39of water, and he eats and he drinks and he goes back to sleep.
- 20:43God provided nourishment for Elijah.
- 20:50God was protecting him and allowing him to rest and to get his physical body under control.
- 21:01He was tired.
- 21:03When we're tired, we don't think right. And the devil is much more effective
- 21:09on a tired person than one that is well-rested.
- 21:12And the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
- 21:16The devil wants to destroy you, your relationship for the Lord,
- 21:21and above all, your witness for him.
- 21:24He wants to try to render you useless. And if he could wipe out Elijah,
- 21:28just think of all that would have spared,
- 21:32all the people that would not have heard or seen or come to know the reality of Jesus and who he is.
- 21:41The devil targets those whose heart is right with God.
- 21:46He targets those whose heart's desire is to serve him.
- 21:52None of that had changed with Elijah, but his perspective have gotten off-center.
- 21:59So there's a second touch. The angel wakes him up a second time,
- 22:04urging him to eat more because there's a long journey ahead of him.
- 22:09God wasn't done with Elijah.
- 22:12God was fixing him physically before he was ever going to touch him emotionally.
- 22:19God ministers to Elijah by caring for Elijah's physical needs before he ever
- 22:24talks to him about his spiritual crisis.
- 22:27We are human beings in a fleshly body, and that body has to be able to hear
- 22:33and understand and to navigate and to move.
- 22:37And when you're at the point of complete physical and emotional exhaustion,
- 22:42you can't hear or do anything other than just be.
- 22:48And if you don't get what you need to renew that body, the temple of God,
- 22:57it's going to be very difficult for you to do the task God wants you to do.
- 23:03Can't forget that this earthly body is our temple, and God has a purpose for
- 23:07it, and it holds your soul, and it allows you to do the work God wants you to do, and we must be more,
- 23:16aware of how important the temple of God is.
- 23:18We have to take care of it. You can't go and go and go and go and go.
- 23:23You got to go, and you got to rest, and you got to eat everything in proper
- 23:28balance and proportion. and Jesus rode on the other side of the lake and he
- 23:33would rest and pray. And it was Jesus.
- 23:37How much more to me and you need to do that? God's care is compassionate,
- 23:41complete, and practical.
- 23:43Rest and nourishment, prayer and support are vital in all of our seasons,
- 23:48but never more so than in our seasons of distress.
- 23:51We've got to feed on the word of God. Man can't live by bread alone.
- 23:56Yes, the angel touched him. Yes, the angel fed him.
- 24:01Yes, the angel gave him something to drink, but the angel was God,
- 24:05and he gave him God's presence.
- 24:08And in God's presence, everything changes. Elijah needed a good view of who God was.
- 24:16Elijah was getting ready to see God like he had never seen him before.
- 24:21But Elijah was still obedient. I want you to see that carefully.
- 24:26Elijah is very obedient, and even in this season of distress and fatigue and exhaustion.
- 24:32He told him to eat and sleep, and he ate and he slept.
- 24:36He tells him to get up and go.
- 24:39He travels for 40 days and 40 nights to Mount Horeb, the mountain of God.
- 24:44God doesn't condemn his weary servants. He strengthens them.
- 24:49The devil's going to tell you that God's through with you. You may have made a mistake.
- 24:54Maybe you didn't make a mistake. Maybe you just continued to work yourself into
- 24:59the ground, and you weren't doing it in the strength of God,
- 25:02which would be a mistake.
- 25:04But you didn't commit some error that somebody's holding against you.
- 25:08You just burnt yourself out because you neglected the time and the presence of Jesus.
- 25:14You didn't have time to pray. You didn't have time to study.
- 25:18You were too busy visiting this person and doing that and being at the church
- 25:22for this and all of those things very well may be things God has called you to do.
- 25:28But the one thing he is always calling you to do is to be in his presence.
- 25:32And when you get so busy and get so distracted and the things of this world
- 25:38hurt you and they are things that you don't expect and disappointments come
- 25:42your way, it seems to me the easy thing to drop off is the reading.
- 25:47The next easy thing to drop off is the praying for God to speak to you.
- 25:50You'll pray for the laundry list of what you want him to do for you.
- 25:54But the whole Psalms 4610, be still and know that I am God, it goes out the window.
- 25:59See, sometimes it's the wilderness.
- 26:03Helps us be shaped into what we need to be strong in the lion's den,
- 26:10to come out of the fiery furnace, unharmed and unscathed.
- 26:15The wilderness is a place when Jesus is with you, you're going to be just fine.
- 26:21But you got to believe.
- 26:24And I want you to see your friends, your religious friends, they all may have
- 26:29all kinds of condemnation to throw at you. They may have all kinds of words
- 26:33so if you just trusted more, this wouldn't happen.
- 26:36If you could just believe more, you'd feel better.
- 26:39You know how he was running because Jezebel said something to him like she was going to kill him?
- 26:45And that voice was what was playing bigger in his head.
- 26:49The voice of the power of God that had defeated the prophets of Baal,
- 26:54don't let your friends speak louder than God.
- 26:57And be careful who your friends are. Be very careful which friends you're listening to.
- 27:03Your closest friend may be your ally, but God may not have revealed to them,
- 27:11exactly what he has for you.
- 27:13It's great to have them, and we're going to see where Elijah got him a mentor.
- 27:18But when you're in a wilderness, it's you and him.
- 27:22And there's no mistaking if you got it right, because you're there in front of him.
- 27:29It's you and him. And he's not condemning you.
- 27:33He's strengthening you. He's no respecter of persons. What he did for Elijah
- 27:38in the wilderness, he wants to do for you.
- 27:41But Elijah was always obedient. it.
- 27:45In verses 9 through 10, God is inviting us to be honest with him.
- 27:50I've read this, and you see him say this twice in scripture,
- 27:56but I want you to hear what he says to him.
- 27:58He says, And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there. And behold,
- 28:02the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou hear,
- 28:06Elijah? This is the second time God has asked him.
- 28:09First he's under the juniper tree then he gets fed rest a little bit more fed
- 28:15again and then he heads off for his 40 days and 40 nights to the mountain of
- 28:19god horeb and here the angel of the lord is saying to him again,
- 28:24the word of the lord says to him what are you doing here.
- 28:29Elijah doesn't lie. He doesn't try to modify the truth. He doesn't church speak.
- 28:38He doesn't put on his religious persona. He says the truth.
- 28:44I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts, for the children of Israel
- 28:48have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the word.
- 28:53And I, even I, only am left.
- 28:58And they seek my life to take it away now i can only imagine the attitude at which,
- 29:07elijah spoke those words there had to be some sting in the in the tone,
- 29:14i'm sure it was less than it would have been before the two meals and the lord
- 29:19guiding him to horeb but he's really frustrated that he finds himself in this situation.
- 29:27And the truth of the matter is, you're going to find that because he's so disgusted, so
- 29:33frustrated, so upset, so distressed, that he's not even thinking correctly,
- 29:39and he's revealing his perception of the truth, and it's wrong.
- 29:44He's saying, I'm the only one in this whole place that believes in you, Lord.
- 29:52You're going to see Jesus gently, God, the Lord.
- 29:58Gently corrects the error of his thinking.
- 30:04When we bring our questions and pain and confusion to God, that's showing we trust him.
- 30:09That's a relational conversation.
- 30:13That's a relationship.
- 30:16It's not a dictatorship.
- 30:18It's not a recipe. It's a relationship.
- 30:23Honest prayer is not unbelief, people. It's a relationship with God.
- 30:29Be honest. Don't formulate your prayers before you say them.
- 30:34He already knows what you're thinking.
- 30:37Have a relationship with God that is so strong and so true and based on such
- 30:42a foundation of the scriptures that you can tell him, I don't like this.
- 30:47I don't understand this. Why are they winning? Where's everybody at now?
- 30:53I did what you asked me to do.
- 30:56It's an honest prayer with an open heart because of the relationship.
- 31:03Elijah isn't blaming God for anything.
- 31:07And Elijah isn't taking away from any of God's power. Elijah's not even thinking about God's power.
- 31:13And when God begins to speak, Elijah listens.
- 31:19That's how you know it wasn't a venting fest. That's how you know it wasn't him blaming God.
- 31:24That's how you know it wasn't him taking away from the deity and power of God
- 31:28but it was a relational prayer,
- 31:32God I need you you gotta talk to me,
- 31:36my faith is running dim and it's running low
- 31:40and I know the word and I know what you say and I know who you are and I desperately
- 31:45believe it but God I need to feel it I just need an affirmation I just need
- 31:50to see something and I want you to see what he does, he
- 31:54comes to him in his presence.
- 31:58Because Elijah's seeking the face of God. He's seeking the word of God.
- 32:03He's seeking a relationship.
- 32:11It's God he wants to be in front of and ask, and we shall receive,
- 32:17seek, and ye shall find, and knock, and it shall be added unto you in Matthew 7.7.
- 32:24And this is what Elijah's doing as he's gone to the cave.
- 32:30God asks him, what are you doing?
- 32:34Tells him flat out about his fear, his loneliness, and his frustration.
- 32:40God already knew Elijah's condition, but he was inviting him to speak.
- 32:46He was inviting him to enjoy the relationship of a God that sticks closer than
- 32:52a brother, of a God who loves you like no one else.
- 32:57God listens, even when we are completely off the mark.
- 33:06It's our heart. It's not unbelief. It's fatigue and distress.
- 33:14We can't live there, but we know in our hearts, those of us who know him,
- 33:20that in his presence there is joy evermore, and at his right hand we'll have pleasure.
- 33:28That will show me the path of life, in thy presence is fullness of joy.
- 33:32At thy right hand there are pleasures evermore, in Psalm 1611.
- 33:37We know this, and Elijah knew this. So Elijah was attempting to get in the presence of God.
- 33:44Whether he knew it or not, his soul knew where he would be nourished.
- 33:48His soul knew where he would be renewed. He knew in front of God.
- 33:54And though he sat under a juniper tree, the relationship we are talking about
- 34:00here in 9 and 10 had long been established before he went to the juniper tree.
- 34:07And that relationship was with a loving, mighty God who shows up.
- 34:14Leads him physically, stays in his presence, lets him rest.
- 34:20He's away from the problems, sends him off to the mountain of God.
- 34:26And then you have 1 Kings 19, 11 through 13.
- 34:31God speaks in a still, small voice.
- 34:35I love this passage of scripture, and we're going to read it again.
- 34:40Go forth and stand upon the mountain before the Lord, and behold the Lord passed
- 34:45by and a great strong wind rent the mountains and break in pieces the rocks
- 34:50before the Lord but the Lord was not in the big wind,
- 34:54and after the wind an earthquake but the Lord was not in the earthquake and
- 34:57after the earthquake a fire but the Lord was not in the fire and after the fire a still small voice,
- 35:06and it was so when Elijah heard it that he wrapped his face and his man only
- 35:11went out and stood in the entering of the cave.
- 35:13And behold, there came a voice unto him and said, What doest thou hear, Elijah?
- 35:19God wasn't in the big wind.
- 35:23God wasn't in the earthquake.
- 35:26Fire appeared, and God wasn't in the fire. But then came the still small voice,
- 35:33that said, what do you hear?
- 35:35God is able to work through dramatic events, but he also speaks through quiet communion.
- 35:41He doesn't need the drama, the chaos, the loud.
- 35:47The still small voice asks him, what do you hear?
- 35:50But we have to slow down enough to hear him. Elijah moved out of his cave,
- 35:56and he stood there. He obeyed God.
- 35:59And the big things wasn't where God was at.
- 36:04It was the still small voice. Psalms 4610 is a real thing. Be still and know that I am God.
- 36:13That takes discipline, effort. It's not passive.
- 36:18I think we get so busy with the busyness of the world and the busyness sometimes
- 36:23of the call of God or of the walk of God or our life or the things that are
- 36:27happening that we're just not still in his presence.
- 36:31And activity and fear make it very difficult to recognize God's direction.
- 36:36Keeping you busy is one of the greatest tactics the devil has.
- 36:41And especially if we're busy doing things we think are good,
- 36:45like teaching the gospel, witnessing, helping those that are sick,
- 36:50being a light, doing the things we're supposed to do, studying.
- 36:54All of that we have to do, and we need to do, but we need to follow the command
- 37:01of God and go where he says go and do what he says do when he says do it.
- 37:07Just doing it isn't following God's commandment.
- 37:10What follows God's commandment is walking in his ways, being ready and capable
- 37:15and able to go, and where he goes, you go.
- 37:19When he says go, you say, here am I, send me.
- 37:22It's being in a state of readiness. it's being a soldier that is prepared
- 37:27it's being dedicated and loving to god it's being willing to do whatever he
- 37:32asks and close enough in your relationship to him to be able to ask him is it
- 37:37it is this it is this what you want
- 37:40is this where i'm supposed to go is this what i'm supposed to do
- 37:44how was the last thing not it i thought i followed you but god what are you
- 37:49talking about what am I supposed to do, get in his presence, and be ready and follow.
- 37:56That's what Elijah teaches us.
- 38:00He comes out of the cave.
- 38:02I'm sure he thought this wind must be it.
- 38:05It's big. God is big. Well, I didn't hear him in the wind.
- 38:11This earthquake must be it. He's rattled my soul.
- 38:16Well, I don't have the answer.
- 38:20The fire is, it's burning the sin out of me. It wasn't about that.
- 38:25It was about how laser-focused are you?
- 38:30Are you looking for the flashy, the loud, or the logical?
- 38:37Are you looking for Jesus? The wind would have been flashy. The earthquake would have been loud.
- 38:44The fire, That would have made sense.
- 38:48But here he comes again.
- 38:50Honestly doing exactly what he did when he was under the juniper tree.
- 38:55Laja, what are you doing?
- 38:58A simple reflection.
- 39:01Elijah believes in 1 Kings 19, verses 14 and 18. He believed he was the only faithful servant left.
- 39:09This is getting to that point that when we're fatigued, when we are distressed,
- 39:14when we are completely exhausted and frustrated, we don't think clearly.
- 39:22And even your best of Christians are going to make mistakes in that time.
- 39:29But God, he forgets our sins as far as the east is from the west.
- 39:35So when Elijah now, we've had some food, we've had some rest,
- 39:40we've been in the presence of God for a little bit,
- 39:43we've proved that we're not easily distracted or fooled by other things that
- 39:50look like God or seem like they should be God.
- 39:54And we're listening for the still small voice.
- 39:57God corrects that distorted perspective. God reveals that 7,000 had not bowed to Baal.
- 40:05See, Elijah's feelings were real, but his conclusions were not accurate.
- 40:11That's how the devil really gets in. We open a small door by being too tired,
- 40:16too frustrated, not spending any time alone with the Lord, not trying to get in his presence.
- 40:23And what is a situation that may be big, but it becomes catastrophic because
- 40:29we are making decisions based on a faulty mind, a limited data set,
- 40:36and what we feel. We've all done it.
- 40:41Out of feeling. And many times acting out of feeling has cost us.
- 40:50Sometimes people are going to accuse you of acting out of feeling when you've
- 40:54really been sitting in front of the feet of Jesus,
- 40:58and you make a decision that does not suit them, does not serve them,
- 41:02does not help them, but comes straight from God himself because you've been to the Mount of Horeb.
- 41:09You've been to the mountain of God, and you've watched the wind pass by.
- 41:14You've watched the earthquake happen.
- 41:16You felt the heat of the fire, but you stayed the course.
- 41:20You stayed concentrating on him. You never changed your focus.
- 41:25You never changed your purpose.
- 41:27You never changed anything. In front of Jesus, you're willing to do whatever
- 41:31God asks because you love him.
- 41:34Under the juniper tree, you've just removed yourself from his presence,
- 41:39but your heart still loves him.
- 41:41I guess the moral of that story is, when you get under the juniper tree,
- 41:45start calling for Jesus.
- 41:47There's some great things about the juniper tree. It was shaded.
- 41:51It's a great place for a picnic and a nap, because that's what Jesus used it for for Elijah.
- 41:58That's what God commanded.
- 42:01God sees the bigger picture. And when we're discouraged, we often think in extremes,
- 42:07I'm alone, nothing's ever going to happen, my work is useless, nobody cares.
- 42:13But God sees the bigger picture. We could never be alone.
- 42:18Because Hebrews 13.5 says he never leaves us or forsakes us.
- 42:22He was with Elijah when he beat the prophets of Baal. He was with Elijah.
- 42:27Elijah when he sat under the juniper tree. He was with Elijah as he walked the
- 42:32journey 40 days and 40 nights to the Mount of Horeb.
- 42:37He was with Elijah in the cave, and he brought Elijah out.
- 42:42And Elijah's relationship with God could see through the wind and the fire and
- 42:50the earthquake, and he heard.
- 42:54In verses 15 through 17 and 19 through 21, God renews the purpose for Elijah,
- 43:03and he gives him the next step.
- 43:05The devil all along has been telling Elijah, you're done.
- 43:09You're done. His flesh, his mind, his body, everything bought into it because
- 43:14his body was done, because he had removed himself from focusing on God.
- 43:21And Isaiah 26.3 says, I will keep him of perfect peace, whose mind is stayed
- 43:26on thee because he trusteth in thee.
- 43:30Sends Elijah back to his assignment. He gave him specific instructions.
- 43:36He directed Elijah to call Elisha as his successor, and Elijah's ministry would
- 43:41continue through faithful obedience and mentoring.
- 43:44Elijah had accountability.
- 43:47Elijah and Elisha have an enormously wonderful relationship,
- 43:54and all that Elijah does, he passes it on to Elisha.
- 44:01God never let Elijah's ministry die.
- 44:05He never let Elijah die that night under the juniper tree either.
- 44:10God may not reveal the entire future, but Elijah teaches us one thing.
- 44:16He gives us the next faithful step. up.
- 44:21Restoration isn't merely relief from the pain. It's renewal for the service.
- 44:28That time under the juniper tree, you say, well, if God made me some bread and,
- 44:34gave me some water, I would surely turn my life around too. He has.
- 44:39He is the bread and he is the water. And we have all of him.
- 44:44The ticket is giving him all of us.
- 44:47Elijah was fully man, with God living in him. But he was fully committed.
- 44:55And in a moment when his flesh was just too weak.
- 45:00He thought. But the merciful, graceful, gracious God that we serve wasn't done with him.
- 45:09Elijah moved from victory to fear, from strength to exhaustion,
- 45:13and from isolation to renewed purpose.
- 45:16And God was with him during every stage, not with condemnation,
- 45:23but with care, the truth and direction.
- 45:29See, the scripture says that he who is free is free indeed.
- 45:34And it says the truth shall make you free.
- 45:39Elijah is a massive, massive account in scripture that each and every one of us need to look at,
- 45:52absorb, and take note of.
- 45:56Because as ministers of the gospel, and that's what every single one of you
- 46:02who've been saved are, he says, go you into all the world and preach and teach the gospel.
- 46:08A minister is one who serves. and we are to serve the Most High God by being
- 46:13His hands and feet extended and serving those around us.
- 46:17God was with Him during every stage, strengthening Him.
- 46:24Was purposed on God. He wasn't perfect, but he was purposed.
- 46:30We can't be perfect in this world because we live in a fleshly body,
- 46:34but we can strive towards the prize of the high calling.
- 46:37But we can be purposed. So when you're weary, Elijah teaches us to receive God's care.
- 46:46When you're afraid, Elijah shows us how to bring our fears honestly to him.
- 46:52And when you're confused, Elijah teaches us to listen for God's voice,
- 46:59to silence the other voices.
- 47:03When you're lonely, Elijah tells us to remember that God preserves his people
- 47:07and he never leaves us or forsakes us.
- 47:10And perhaps the one we need to remind ourselves the most of,
- 47:15when you are discouraged.
- 47:18Just take the next step of obedience.
- 47:22God does not abandon his servants in the wilderness. He restores them there,
- 47:28and sends them forward with renewed purpose.
- 47:33Remember, you are loved. Jesus loves you.
