- 0:24That's how a winner's made.
- 0:25Stick a fork in a hater on

- 0:46what's going on man hey
- 0:48scott I'm doing good how
- 0:49are you I'm good man
- 0:52earlier today I did a
- 0:53master show I went to hit
- 0:55the video and it just
- 0:57kerflunk kaflui it was a cool video
- 1:01Yeah.
- 1:03I have different ones for
- 1:03different shows and it just didn't,
- 1:06it didn't start.
- 1:07And I was like, well, okay,
- 1:07I guess we're doing it live,
- 1:13but it went today.
- 1:14And I love that.
- 1:15That is like one of the
- 1:16coolest type songs in the
- 1:17royalty free music category
- 1:19that's out there.
- 1:21And I just, and I love it.
- 1:23So I'm hyped to see you.
- 1:25How you been?
- 1:26I've been good.
- 1:27Just, uh, just training a lot.
- 1:31Getting excited for semifinals.
- 1:33Yeah.
- 1:34And so this is the third
- 1:35year in a row we've talked to Aaliyah.
- 1:38And she's always one of
- 1:40those bright faces when I
- 1:41see at an event that just makes me happy.
- 1:45I feel like I'm with my
- 1:47people and I get to hang out.
- 1:50And so, as always,
- 1:51it's fun to catch up with you.
- 1:53I know you made some big
- 1:54changes this year.
- 1:56You moved out west.
- 1:58Mm-hmm.
- 1:58Walk us through that thought
- 2:00process and then kind of where you are.
- 2:04Yeah.
- 2:05So I was previously in Kansas.
- 2:07I spent the past two seasons
- 2:09in Kansas City, Kansas,
- 2:10training with Jill Glasnap.
- 2:12She was my coach.
- 2:14And I obviously made very
- 2:16good progress with her.
- 2:17I made semifinals both years
- 2:19I was with her.
- 2:20Ended up finishing 20th in
- 2:22the West at semifinals last year.
- 2:24Getting close to that game spot.
- 2:28Um,
- 2:29and we were making a lot of good progress,
- 2:31um,
- 2:31but it got to a point where I was on
- 2:36the verge of not being able
- 2:37to pay rent anymore.
- 2:38Um, and I was also,
- 2:40I was training alone in Kansas.
- 2:43I didn't have any training
- 2:44partners out there.
- 2:46And that was,
- 2:47I think what I needed when I was there.
- 2:51Um,
- 2:51but it was getting to a point where
- 2:52that was just becoming, um,
- 2:56hard to maintain.
- 2:59And like, I love going to the gym.
- 3:02I love training,
- 3:03but it was getting to a
- 3:04point where I didn't want
- 3:06to go to the gym anymore.
- 3:08Just because training by
- 3:09yourself day after day for
- 3:12multiple years is,
- 3:14it takes a very special
- 3:15type of person to do that
- 3:16for an extended period of time.
- 3:19And I was really missing
- 3:20having just people to talk to, people to,
- 3:25you know, talk strategy with,
- 3:27compare scores with,
- 3:28all that kind of stuff.
- 3:29So that combined with the
- 3:32fact that I was becoming
- 3:34very broke and couldn't
- 3:37necessarily afford rent anymore.
- 3:39The timing worked out
- 3:42beautifully that Sean
- 3:43Sweeney had posted on
- 3:45Instagram that he was
- 3:46looking for an athlete and
- 3:47a coach to come move to Nevada,
- 3:50train with him,
- 3:51coach at his gym and live
- 3:55on his property.
- 3:56Um,
- 3:57so I sent him a message and told him
- 4:01the background.
- 4:02Yeah.
- 4:03Where's he at back there?
- 4:05You can see his head up there.
- 4:07Um, so I sent him a message and I was like,
- 4:10Hey, you know,
- 4:11I've been chasing the games
- 4:13for a couple of years now.
- 4:14I feel like I'm making progress,
- 4:16but if I don't change something right now,
- 4:19I'm going to basically have to give up.
- 4:22this dream because I'm going to have to go,
- 4:24you know,
- 4:25get a grownup job and start
- 4:27making money to pay.
- 4:29Um,
- 4:30and so this opportunity that he
- 4:32presented was the perfect opportunity.
- 4:35Um, he has a tiny house on his property.
- 4:38It's like a little shed basically.
- 4:40Um,
- 4:41it's in his front yard and that was
- 4:43what he was offering as, Hey,
- 4:45come live in this tiny house.
- 4:46You won't have to pay rent.
- 4:47You won't have to pay bills,
- 4:48just live here, coach at the gym.
- 4:50And that's
- 4:52you know, the,
- 4:53the agreement that you're
- 4:54here to help run the gym.
- 4:55And in exchange,
- 4:57you get to live on my property.
- 4:58Um, so I sent him a message,
- 5:01sent him a video, uh,
- 5:04ended up coming out here to visit, uh,
- 5:06that must've been like
- 5:09November of last year,
- 5:11spent a couple of days here,
- 5:13Got to meet him, meet everybody at the gym,
- 5:15coach a few classes, do some training.
- 5:18And I ended up really loving it.
- 5:19So a couple of days later,
- 5:21I decided to pull the
- 5:22trigger and move out here.
- 5:24And by the beginning of December,
- 5:25my life was packed up in a
- 5:27trailer and I was driving
- 5:29from Kansas to Fallon, Nevada.
- 5:31So got here early December
- 5:34and now I'm living in a
- 5:35tiny house and coaching at
- 5:37CrossFit Power Stroke.
- 5:40So.
- 5:41That leads to just a ton of
- 5:42questions for me.
- 5:43And how do you take your
- 5:45belongings and whittle them
- 5:47down to a point?
- 5:48Or maybe you already were,
- 5:50but you whittle them down
- 5:51to something that fits in a tiny house.
- 5:55It was very hard.
- 5:57Anyone who knows me knows
- 5:59that I'm a bit of a hoarder.
- 6:01Wow.
- 6:02And I had a lot of stuff.
- 6:05So it was actually,
- 6:06I think it was really good for me.
- 6:08because it forced me to
- 6:10actually take a hard look
- 6:11at all of my belongings,
- 6:13all of my possessions and
- 6:15figure out what I actually
- 6:17needed and what I didn't
- 6:18need that I was holding
- 6:20onto for whatever reason,
- 6:22whether that was, Oh,
- 6:23I might need this again in three years.
- 6:26And, you know,
- 6:27things like that or things that, you know,
- 6:30I don't want to throw away
- 6:31this concert ticket stub
- 6:32because it has sentimental value.
- 6:34Like,
- 6:35All right,
- 6:35I think it's time to move past
- 6:37some of those things.
- 6:39So it was a little bit of
- 6:42like an emotional... For
- 6:43the kids out there,
- 6:45when you went to a concert,
- 6:46you used to get a paper ticket.
- 6:48Yeah, I forgot everything's digital now.
- 6:53But it was kind of like an
- 6:54emotional cleanse almost.
- 6:56So it took a decent amount of time.
- 6:58I donated a lot of stuff to
- 7:01Goodwill and just some other...
- 7:04donation centers out in Kansas,
- 7:08sold some clothes on Posh
- 7:10March and just did what I
- 7:12could to downsize to really
- 7:15just my essentials.
- 7:19And then, you know, of course,
- 7:20having two cats traveling
- 7:22with me makes it a little
- 7:23hard to shove everything in my car.
- 7:25So I ended up having to,
- 7:27I had to get a trailer
- 7:28hitch installed on my car
- 7:30and then rent a trailer and
- 7:32pull that with me.
- 7:34Um,
- 7:35and so that also allowed me to bring my
- 7:36air runner out here, which was nice.
- 7:38So, yeah.
- 7:40So I'm assuming the air
- 7:42runner is not in the tiny house.
- 7:44It's not,
- 7:46it would take up the entire tiny house.
- 7:48So my air runner is in the gym.
- 7:49Uh, did you have other equipment?
- 7:53Uh, just a couple of barbells,
- 7:55barbells and an air runner.
- 7:56And there,
- 7:59you brought those two and just
- 8:00threw them in the gym.
- 8:01Yeah.
- 8:02Yeah.
- 8:03Okay.
- 8:03So what is tiny house living like?
- 8:08It's interesting.
- 8:10It was definitely an
- 8:11adjustment and I feel like
- 8:13I've adjusted fairly well
- 8:14to it at this point.
- 8:17So I have to light my stove
- 8:19with an actual lighter.
- 8:21So I turn on the gas and
- 8:22then hold a lighter to it.
- 8:23Never had to do that before.
- 8:26I have, this is going to sound weird.
- 8:29I have a compost toilet.
- 8:31So my toilet doesn't actually flush.
- 8:33it's a French drain and a compost toilet.
- 8:35So, um, that's different for sure.
- 8:38Um, I don't have a dishwasher.
- 8:41Uh, I don't have an oven.
- 8:43Um,
- 8:44so I've had to get creative with my
- 8:47meal prep.
- 8:47I used to use my oven a lot for meal prep.
- 8:51I was lucky enough that a
- 8:52couple of months ago,
- 8:53my parents bought me an air
- 8:54fryer for my birthday.
- 8:55So that helps a lot with the cooking.
- 8:56Um, and then just, uh,
- 9:02living small in general um
- 9:06you know I i realize that I
- 9:08i don't really spend too
- 9:09much time at home I'm
- 9:12mostly only home on my rest
- 9:14days really uh every other
- 9:16day I'm spending most of my
- 9:18time at the gym or out
- 9:19running errands or whatever
- 9:21so it's just uh it's been
- 9:24good I like it it's very
- 9:26calm kenneth the lab says
- 9:29air fryers are key yes
- 9:32I don't know how I went so
- 9:33long without one.
- 9:34So shout out mom and dad.
- 9:36Thanks for the air fryer.
- 9:38So with that,
- 9:39do you have any outdoor
- 9:40living space around the tiny house?
- 9:43I have a porch.
- 9:44I have a really cute front porch.
- 9:46I've never had a front porch before,
- 9:47so that's pretty cool.
- 9:50And then it's in his front yard,
- 9:54basically.
- 9:54So across from his driveway,
- 9:56he's got the tiny house set up.
- 9:59Um,
- 9:59and we spend a decent amount of time
- 10:01outside.
- 10:01Um, Sean and his wife,
- 10:03Emily just started a garden
- 10:05in the front yard.
- 10:06Um, so, you know,
- 10:07a couple of days ago I was
- 10:08out there helping them
- 10:09plant some watermelons and
- 10:11stuff like that.
- 10:12Um, so, and you know, out doing runs,
- 10:17bike rides, walking around, whatever.
- 10:18Um, it's been getting nice out here.
- 10:21So I've been able to spend
- 10:23some more time outside.
- 10:25what has the relationship
- 10:27been like between sean and
- 10:29his wife and you have you
- 10:30become like part of the
- 10:31family or I feel like yeah
- 10:35they've been really great
- 10:36um you know my birthday
- 10:38they invited me over for
- 10:39dinner and they cooked me
- 10:40dinner um we hang out at
- 10:43the house sometimes when
- 10:45nobody's got anything going
- 10:46on they've got two young
- 10:48kids so their life is a
- 10:49little hectic right now um but you know
- 10:54I love the kids.
- 10:56Their daughter, Tyler,
- 10:57she can't say my name.
- 10:59So she calls me Ia.
- 11:00So I'm Ia.
- 11:02It's really cute.
- 11:03But yeah, it's been a lot of fun.
- 11:07They've been so incredible, so welcoming.
- 11:12They've basically become a
- 11:13second family to me here.
- 11:17So back in the CrossFit sense,
- 11:19you come out there,
- 11:19you're basically hired to
- 11:22be a training partner.
- 11:25Does that come with Sean
- 11:26coaching you as well?
- 11:28Yes, he is my coach now.
- 11:31So I am part of the Cowboy
- 11:33Way athlete program.
- 11:35He runs and coaches that program.
- 11:39So he's my coach and also my
- 11:41training partner,
- 11:42which is actually really cool.
- 11:45It's interesting in some
- 11:46instances where it's like, all right,
- 11:48does he need to be my coach
- 11:50for this workout or does he
- 11:51need to be my training
- 11:51partner for this workout?
- 11:53So it's been...
- 11:54interesting navigating that
- 11:55and figuring that out.
- 11:57Um, but it's been,
- 11:58it's been so amazing and just having, um,
- 12:02such a high caliber athlete
- 12:04to train next to every day.
- 12:06Um, I mean,
- 12:08I feel like I've improved so
- 12:10much since I've been here, uh,
- 12:12just from this environment.
- 12:14And I feel like I'm the
- 12:15fittest I've ever been.
- 12:16And I'm really excited for
- 12:17semifinals this year.
- 12:19So I've,
- 12:20I've watched you all off season and I'm,
- 12:24I'm going to make watching you for years.
- 12:29You have been a very much,
- 12:31very much a power output athlete, right?
- 12:36It seems to me that over the last year,
- 12:38there's been some
- 12:39deconstruction down to kind
- 12:42of like the bare bones and rebuilding.
- 12:47Am I, am I correct in that?
- 12:48Yeah.
- 12:50And then where are you?
- 12:52Trying to turn myself into a runner.
- 12:54where are you in that journey?
- 12:55Are you still in the process
- 12:58of the rebuilding of the
- 13:00new Aaliyah 2.0 or.
- 13:02Yeah, I think, I think it's,
- 13:08it's going to continually
- 13:10be a process and an evolution.
- 13:12And, you know,
- 13:13even when I get through the
- 13:15phase that I'm in right now,
- 13:16there's going to be another evolution,
- 13:18you know,
- 13:18Aaliyah 3.0 or whatever you want
- 13:20to call it.
- 13:22But I have,
- 13:24especially since coming here,
- 13:25I've spent a lot of time
- 13:27working on my aerobic base, my running,
- 13:32burpees, things like that.
- 13:33So, you know, high, heavy breathing,
- 13:39longer workouts have tended
- 13:42to not be great for me historically.
- 13:46And I'm still not where I
- 13:48would like to be with them,
- 13:49but I'm getting significantly better.
- 13:52The
- 13:54quarterfinals workout this
- 13:55year with the wall balls
- 13:56and the burpee box jump
- 13:57overs that's like two of my
- 14:00weakness movements and if I
- 14:02had done that workout a
- 14:04year ago I don't know that
- 14:06I would have even made it
- 14:07into the last round of
- 14:08burpee box jump overs and
- 14:10when I did it this year I
- 14:11did it twice um I still I
- 14:14didn't finish the workout
- 14:15that was kind of
- 14:16disappointing but um by the
- 14:18second time I did it I was
- 14:19only six reps from
- 14:20finishing my last set of
- 14:22burpee box jump overs so
- 14:24like seeing improvements and
- 14:26that kind of stuff has been really cool.
- 14:28I've been running more than
- 14:31I've ever run in my life
- 14:32since I've been here.
- 14:33We live about two miles from
- 14:36a place called Soda Lake.
- 14:38It's just this big,
- 14:39it's actually an active volcano,
- 14:42but it's a lake with,
- 14:43it's like in a crater.
- 14:44And so we run around the rim
- 14:46of the lake and we run like
- 14:49downhill down to the lake,
- 14:50do some burpees,
- 14:51run back up the hill and
- 14:52then keep running around
- 14:53And we do that once a week.
- 14:57The first time I did it,
- 14:58when I first moved out here,
- 14:59that run took me 59 minutes.
- 15:02And now my PR is down to about 45 minutes.
- 15:06So yeah, making big improvements.
- 15:09There's still a ways to go,
- 15:11but we're getting there.
- 15:14And one of the big reasons I ask is if,
- 15:16if people have watched you
- 15:18and then they watch you in
- 15:19some of these off season competitions,
- 15:21like you would be the pick
- 15:23to win some of the lifting events.
- 15:25And that didn't necessarily
- 15:26happen this off season.
- 15:28And my assumption was
- 15:30because you're going through this process,
- 15:32you're probably not even
- 15:33touching a barbell very much.
- 15:35Yeah.
- 15:35My, my lifting has changed, uh,
- 15:39pretty significantly.
- 15:40So, you know, I'm not on, uh,
- 15:44you know,
- 15:44eight to 12 week strength cycle
- 15:45for anything specific right now,
- 15:47because I don't need to be, um,
- 15:49winning the lifting events
- 15:51is awesome and so much fun
- 15:53and who doesn't like winning an event.
- 15:55Um,
- 15:56but it's more important for me to be
- 15:58focusing on bringing up the
- 16:00things that I struggle with.
- 16:02And that means that I might
- 16:04not necessarily be winning
- 16:05the lifting events anymore,
- 16:07but I can still hang in the
- 16:09lifting events.
- 16:10And that's,
- 16:12I need to just be more
- 16:13well-rounded in that aspect of like,
- 16:15I don't necessarily need to win.
- 16:16I just need everything to come up more.
- 16:22so when you're in these off season comps,
- 16:25it's, it's Aaliyah 2.0.
- 16:28And are you testing,
- 16:30you testing that new Aaliyah out?
- 16:32Like, like the,
- 16:35the priority isn't the lifting event.
- 16:38It's how well am I going to
- 16:39do on this muscle up
- 16:40workout or how well am I
- 16:41going to do on this run?
- 16:44Like, so does that priority shift?
- 16:48Yeah, I think, um,
- 16:51Previously, when I would compete,
- 16:53I would go in thinking
- 16:54about each event individually and say,
- 16:58you know, oh, there's a lifting event.
- 17:00I want to win that one.
- 17:01And then there's this other
- 17:02event that I know is going to crush me,
- 17:03but that's OK because I'm
- 17:04going to win the lifting
- 17:05one and it doesn't matter.
- 17:07And now I feel like I
- 17:09approach competitions more
- 17:12with a holistic approach of like, hey,
- 17:15there's a lifting event and
- 17:16that's going to be awesome for me.
- 17:18But I'm also going to spend
- 17:20just as much time focusing
- 17:21on these other events
- 17:22because I want my overall
- 17:24placement to come up,
- 17:26not just go crush a lifting
- 17:28event and get crushed by everything else.
- 17:33Okay.
- 17:34So through all the,
- 17:37let's call it
- 17:37experimentation of the off season.
- 17:41how do you feel you're doing
- 17:43going into this game season?
- 17:45Like even before the open,
- 17:47did you feel like you were
- 17:48ready to unleash whatever
- 17:51it was that you created?
- 17:52Yeah.
- 17:54I mean, I, like I said,
- 17:55there's still more work to
- 17:56be done and still more
- 17:57improvements to be made, but I,
- 18:01I was really excited to
- 18:03start this season because I
- 18:05do feel like a different
- 18:07athlete this year.
- 18:08And I,
- 18:10I don't know how much it'll show.
- 18:12I don't know how to explain it.
- 18:19I don't know how much it'll
- 18:22show in terms of the leaderboard,
- 18:24but I do know that I will feel it.
- 18:27And I hope that it reflects
- 18:29on the leaderboard.
- 18:30But I know that I feel like
- 18:32a very different athlete this season.
- 18:34How hard is it for you to
- 18:35wrap your head around that?
- 18:40It's a, yeah, it's a process.
- 18:43It's just another one of
- 18:44those mental processes that
- 18:46we go through as competitive athletes.
- 18:49And I feel like everything in this sport,
- 18:52once you get to this level,
- 18:54it's all just mental and
- 18:55it's learning how to
- 18:59navigate all of the
- 19:03additional things that come
- 19:04with it that aren't just
- 19:06your physical performance.
- 19:11I,
- 19:11it's so funny because I've talked to a
- 19:13lot of these athletes, um,
- 19:15like yourself and like
- 19:17podcasting is very similar to that.
- 19:19You know,
- 19:19we're in a very competitive space
- 19:21with a lot of third party outlets and,
- 19:24and everybody's jockeying
- 19:26for position and,
- 19:27and what are you good at
- 19:28and what do you need to
- 19:30improve on and what do you like?
- 19:32It's very similar in a very different way.
- 19:35yeah yeah that makes sense
- 19:38um and so like I can
- 19:40commiserate a lot with a
- 19:42semi-final athlete and yeah
- 19:46um and it's so exciting for
- 19:47me when when people have
- 19:49these realizations these
- 19:50epiphanies um and create
- 19:53the 2.0s the 3.0s and and
- 19:56move on um we'll come back
- 20:00to semis in a second
- 20:02But you have become quite
- 20:04the media mogul yourself.
- 20:09I'm having fun with it.
- 20:11You cut out just a little bit there.
- 20:12I said I've been having fun with it.
- 20:16So you've made appearances on Death By,
- 20:21which you gave this program
- 20:22a huge shout out, which, you know, heart.
- 20:27We just got it.
- 20:29And I totally appreciate that.
- 20:31You are currently the Jeopardy champion.
- 20:37How fun is it that you are
- 20:40the Jeopardy champ?
- 20:42Pretty cool.
- 20:44Chase had asked me a couple
- 20:45weeks ago if I was
- 20:46interested in going on Jeopardy.
- 20:49And I was like, you know,
- 20:49I don't think I'm going to win,
- 20:51but I'll give it my best shot.
- 20:54And then he reached out again last week.
- 20:56He was like, Hey,
- 20:57do you want to come on this Friday?
- 20:58I was like, yeah, sure.
- 21:00And then I found out that I
- 21:02was going to be going against, uh,
- 21:03Hiller.
- 21:04I was like, Oh no,
- 21:06I'm really not going to win this.
- 21:09Um, but it ended up,
- 21:10it ended up being so much fun.
- 21:12Um, it was funny after the first question,
- 21:15I think Chase made a comment about, um,
- 21:19how's your heart rate right now?
- 21:21Is it more stressful walking
- 21:23onto a competition floor or
- 21:24doing CrossFit Jeopardy?
- 21:25And I think the answer is
- 21:26pretty solidly doing CrossFit Jeopardy.
- 21:29My heart rate was through the roof.
- 21:31I was sweating.
- 21:32I was nervous, but it was a lot of fun.
- 21:36I have grown to love that show.
- 21:39When you see someone like,
- 21:42I know that you're a fan of
- 21:43the sport as well as a competitor, right?
- 21:46So I know you know a lot
- 21:47about what's going on.
- 21:48You have Hiller that does
- 21:49nothing but study
- 21:51everything so he can make videos.
- 21:52And then you have Keith Knapp,
- 21:53a walking encyclopedia of the L1 manual.
- 21:59That was a pretty accurate description.
- 22:03And so it's really fun to
- 22:04watch it kind of play out.
- 22:07And of course, you know, in my older age,
- 22:10my wife and I watched the
- 22:11real Jeopardy every night.
- 22:13Yeah.
- 22:14And so I play along and it's so much fun.
- 22:18So much fun.
- 22:19Have you been watching Jeopardy Masters?
- 22:23Not yet.
- 22:24What I do with those is I
- 22:25wait till they pile up and
- 22:26then I binge them.
- 22:28Okay.
- 22:29I was watching that.
- 22:31I claimed it was preparation
- 22:32for CrossFit Jeopardy,
- 22:33but it was really just
- 22:34because I love Jeopardy.
- 22:37They make me feel very dumb.
- 22:40Larry Young says, big win on Jeopardy.
- 22:43Now you need to go on a long
- 22:44run of winning.
- 22:46Yes, sir.
- 22:47I'm ready.
- 22:51I'm excited about Jeopardy, Matt,
- 22:52and please don't spoil this for me.
- 22:55I grew up just outside of Pittsburgh.
- 22:58And one of the Jeopardy
- 22:59masters is from Pittsburgh.
- 23:00And I'm a huge fan of her
- 23:02because she is also a
- 23:03chaser on the game show The Chase.
- 23:07Oh, okay.
- 23:08That's cool.
- 23:10And on The Chase,
- 23:11she knits while she answers
- 23:13trivia questions and crushes people.
- 23:17And I love it.
- 23:18That's awesome.
- 23:19Like how nonchalant can you
- 23:22act while you're imposing
- 23:24your will on this game show?
- 23:27That's a pretty baller move.
- 23:31I like that.
- 23:32It is.
- 23:33And she's on Masters.
- 23:35So you probably have seen her.
- 23:37Yeah, probably.
- 23:39Larry Young also says the
- 23:41Jeopardy Masters questions are tough.
- 23:43Yes, they are.
- 23:44Yeah.
- 23:45It was so funny when they
- 23:46were doing the tournament,
- 23:47the invitational tournament champions.
- 23:50Yeah.
- 23:50Like the questions had
- 23:51gotten harder and harder and harder.
- 23:54And then they go back to regular jeopardy.
- 23:55I'm like, man, all of a sudden,
- 23:58like I can play.
- 23:59Yeah.
- 24:01That's how I feel too.
- 24:02And then celebrity jeopardy.
- 24:03I'm like, oh yeah, I'm good.
- 24:04I'm good.
- 24:05Let's go.
- 24:08That's funny.
- 24:08I feel really smart when I
- 24:10watch celebrity jeopardy.
- 24:11Yeah.
- 24:13So I,
- 24:14I had the honor of being on coffee
- 24:15pods and wads, um,
- 24:17around the whiteboard and
- 24:18you've done death by how
- 24:21nervous do you get during those?
- 24:23My first one, I was super nervous.
- 24:26Um, I,
- 24:27Lauren had sent the questions the
- 24:29day before and I was like studying,
- 24:31making notes.
- 24:32I was like, I have my answers ready to go.
- 24:34Um, and the more that I've done it,
- 24:37the less that I've stressed about it,
- 24:39it gets a little bit easier.
- 24:40Um, but it is.
- 24:42It's always challenging
- 24:44knowing that you're going
- 24:45on a live video and you're
- 24:47attempting to sound
- 24:48intelligent to a large crowd.
- 24:51I think that's challenging for anybody,
- 24:58but it's also a lot of fun.
- 25:00And I've got to meet and
- 25:03talk with a lot of really
- 25:04cool people through death by.
- 25:06So that's been really cool.
- 25:09Yeah.
- 25:09On around the whiteboard,
- 25:10you only have 60 seconds.
- 25:12That's tough.
- 25:15I want to explain way more
- 25:17than I have time to.
- 25:18Yeah.
- 25:19I feel like if I ever did that,
- 25:20I would get muted very quick.
- 25:22Yeah.
- 25:23Well, I won my round.
- 25:24I'm on to semifinals,
- 25:25which is this Wednesday.
- 25:26Hell yeah.
- 25:27I can do it again.
- 25:28I got to go watch it.
- 25:30Oh, man.
- 25:32Yeah.
- 25:33And I know with Peter to get points,
- 25:35like you have to swing with haymakers.
- 25:38Yeah.
- 25:38Yeah.
- 25:39And so it's,
- 25:40it's really prepping that and
- 25:41getting ready for that, but it's,
- 25:44and it's, let me say,
- 25:45it's just awesome seeing
- 25:46you in the media space.
- 25:47Is that something you want
- 25:48to do can even beyond your career?
- 25:50Yeah.
- 25:51I mean, I've,
- 25:52I've been for a while trying
- 25:54to figure out, you know,
- 25:56what I want to do after
- 25:59competitive CrossFit and, you know, every,
- 26:02I think every competitor
- 26:03should be thinking about
- 26:04life beyond the competition
- 26:06floor because you're only
- 26:07going to be a competitor for so long.
- 26:09I would love to be able to
- 26:10do it my whole life,
- 26:11but that's just not realistic.
- 26:14And so trying to figure out
- 26:17how I can add value to the
- 26:19space and how I can stay in
- 26:23the CrossFit world,
- 26:24because this is what I love
- 26:25and this is what I want to
- 26:27do with my life and
- 26:28figuring out ways to do
- 26:30that beyond competing.
- 26:32I think getting involved on
- 26:35the media side of things has been
- 26:38a lot of fun for me.
- 26:41It allows me to stay in this
- 26:45CrossFit world,
- 26:47hopefully beyond my competitive years.
- 26:49You know, things like podcasting.
- 26:51I would love to at some
- 26:54point get into broadcast announcing.
- 26:55I think that would be a lot of fun.
- 26:56And, you know, maybe,
- 27:00maybe Lauren Khalil will
- 27:01take me under her wing and
- 27:03I can be the next Lauren Khalil.
- 27:06Well,
- 27:07You always have a friend
- 27:08here if you ever have any questions.
- 27:11And, you know,
- 27:12we put together teams for
- 27:14different events and, you know,
- 27:15if you're available.
- 27:17Oh, hell yeah.
- 27:18I'd love that.
- 27:19Anytime.
- 27:21So, um, back to CrossFit, you, you're,
- 27:24you get through the season with,
- 27:26with the new version of
- 27:27Aaliyah and you get to
- 27:30quarterfinals and you learn
- 27:32that they cut down how many
- 27:35go to semis from 60 to 40.
- 27:38How scary is that when you've,
- 27:41when you flip the script on
- 27:42yourself and now the room
- 27:45for error has decreased by a third.
- 27:48Yeah, it was pretty scary.
- 27:49Um, it's.
- 27:51especially knowing not only
- 27:53are they cutting the field down the,
- 27:55down to 40,
- 27:55but they're also increasing
- 27:56the number that they bring
- 27:57into quarterfinals.
- 27:58So now the room for error is really,
- 28:02really small.
- 28:03It was already getting
- 28:04smaller and now it's even smaller.
- 28:07Um, so that was, that was scary.
- 28:09And when they announced the
- 28:10workouts and I saw the
- 28:12burpee box jump wall ball workout,
- 28:14I was a little nervous that
- 28:17my season wouldn't go past
- 28:18quarterfinals this year.
- 28:20Um,
- 28:21because I know that I made a
- 28:22lot of improvements, but like I said,
- 28:23there's still a ways to go.
- 28:25Um, and so I think, um,
- 28:31seeing that made me very
- 28:34nervous and I wasn't sure
- 28:36how this season was going to go.
- 28:38Um, but well,
- 28:41and I will say after quarterfinals ended,
- 28:44I was still very nervous
- 28:45because I ended up
- 28:47before the video review process,
- 28:49I ended up at 48th in the West.
- 28:52So I was outside of the cut
- 28:53line when quarterfinals is over.
- 28:55And I was pretty convinced
- 28:57that my season was over at that point.
- 28:59But then luckily I locked
- 29:03out my box step ups and got
- 29:06through the video review
- 29:07process relatively unscathed.
- 29:10And I was able to sneak in
- 29:12there and all you got to do is get there.
- 29:14So
- 29:15a clean slate when I go down
- 29:17to Carson and I'm ready to go.
- 29:20So how confident were you
- 29:21that you were going to get
- 29:22through the video process
- 29:25when you just see them
- 29:26flying penalty after
- 29:27penalty after penalty?
- 29:29I've talked to some people
- 29:30who they were already
- 29:31validated when that happened.
- 29:33Yeah.
- 29:34So I hadn't had any scores
- 29:36validated when all those
- 29:37penalties started coming out.
- 29:38And
- 29:39I pride myself on doing good reps.
- 29:43I did get one penalty this
- 29:45year on the wall ball workout,
- 29:46but it was because somebody
- 29:48touched my equipment,
- 29:49not because I did not meet
- 29:51a movement standard.
- 29:52And I try very hard to make
- 29:54sure that I'm always
- 29:55meeting movement standards
- 29:56because I think that that
- 29:57is the most important part
- 30:00of the sport is doing it with integrity,
- 30:05even still.
- 30:07seeing all the penalties come out,
- 30:08I got so stressed.
- 30:10I was so nervous.
- 30:12It was a situation where I'm like,
- 30:13I know I do good reps.
- 30:14And like,
- 30:15I watched back my video and it looks good,
- 30:18but you never know.
- 30:20And so I got,
- 30:21I got very nervous and went
- 30:22about the email that my
- 30:24workout one score was accepted.
- 30:26I don't think I'd ever been
- 30:28more relieved to get an email in my life.
- 30:32You say you watch back your
- 30:33videos before you submit.
- 30:34Do you have anybody else
- 30:36look at them or just you?
- 30:40I, if there's anything questionable,
- 30:42I will have somebody else
- 30:43look at it or maybe even a
- 30:45couple of people look at it just to see.
- 30:47And if they also agree that
- 30:49it's questionable, then, you know,
- 30:51redo the workout.
- 30:53But I think it's, I'm very,
- 30:59critical of myself I always
- 31:02have been and so I think
- 31:04sometimes when I see
- 31:05something that's like is
- 31:06that questionable I don't
- 31:07know if I have you know two
- 31:09three four other people
- 31:10saying no that looks fine
- 31:12then that's kind of like my
- 31:13um backstop of like hey
- 31:16this might just be me being
- 31:17overly critical of myself
- 31:19if other eyes are seeing
- 31:20this and think it's fine
- 31:22then it's probably fine but
- 31:23again if somebody else
- 31:25looks at it and they're
- 31:25like I don't know might be might be iffy
- 31:29then I'm going to, you know,
- 31:30redo that workout or do
- 31:31whatever I need to do to fix that.
- 31:34Oh, big friend of the show.
- 31:35Jay Birch says afternoon,
- 31:37Scott and Aaliyah.
- 31:39What's that?
- 31:41It's funny because my cohost
- 31:43on the Sunday night show is
- 31:44in the age group.
- 31:46I mean,
- 31:47it's this weekend and she sends me
- 31:49her videos to review and
- 31:51that is a, that is a,
- 31:53I was a judge and it is a tough job.
- 31:56Yes.
- 31:56Like to be able to,
- 31:59to be honest with your friend and say,
- 32:04look at this, this, and this.
- 32:05And I don't ever say like, this is wrong.
- 32:07You need to redo.
- 32:08I say, take a look at this, this, and this,
- 32:12and you need to decide if
- 32:13you are good with it or not.
- 32:15Yeah.
- 32:17And it's,
- 32:20It's, it's so hard.
- 32:21It's even like, you know,
- 32:23I have somebody judging me
- 32:24here in person when I do
- 32:25the workouts and I have
- 32:27judged people doing the
- 32:28workouts and I do not envy
- 32:32the job of a judge because
- 32:34it is so challenging and
- 32:37there's such a fine line between,
- 32:41you know,
- 32:41a good rep and a bad rep a lot
- 32:43of times and having to make
- 32:44that judgment call in an
- 32:46instant on the spot, like it's,
- 32:49That's, I don't envy it at all.
- 32:52And thank you to all of the
- 32:54judges out there.
- 32:55I'm impressed by you guys every day.
- 33:00So you get through quarters,
- 33:03you make it in above the cut line,
- 33:05essentially.
- 33:06Yes.
- 33:07And you're going to semis.
- 33:09Then word comes out on
- 33:10Friday and I'm going to share my screen.
- 33:13The new allocation for the
- 33:15semis this year.
- 33:20And ba-bam.
- 33:24So now we have the new allocations,
- 33:27and the West actually loses three spots?
- 33:31I think it was 10 last year,
- 33:35so I think we lost two spots.
- 33:37Okay,
- 33:37I couldn't remember if it was 10 or 11.
- 33:40So you're down to eight.
- 33:41Yeah.
- 33:45What does that do to your
- 33:47psyche going into an event like this?
- 33:50I mean, it's hard not to think about it,
- 33:52but I,
- 33:54I'm trying not to really put too
- 33:57much weight into it because
- 33:58all that's like, I can't,
- 34:00I can't change how many they're taking.
- 34:03All I can do is control the
- 34:04effort that I bring to the competition.
- 34:07And so I know that as long
- 34:09as I go out and I execute
- 34:12my workouts to the best of my abilities,
- 34:16I'll be happy.
- 34:17no matter how that falls,
- 34:18whether I'm top eight or not,
- 34:20as long as I know that I
- 34:21put all of my effort into it,
- 34:25whatever happens, happens.
- 34:28With this rebuild going on
- 34:31and you knowing that you have more to go,
- 34:35does that make it easier to like,
- 34:38if it doesn't happen this year,
- 34:40it's okay because we are a
- 34:41work in progress or will it
- 34:43hurt just as bad?
- 34:46I mean,
- 34:47it's going to hurt if that happens.
- 34:51It never doesn't hurt.
- 34:52It hurt last year even.
- 34:56It hurt two years ago when I
- 34:57knew that I had no shot.
- 34:59It still hurts.
- 35:01But it is so much more
- 35:03comforting to go into a
- 35:06situation like that saying, hey,
- 35:08I didn't make it this year,
- 35:11but that's okay because I
- 35:13still have so much
- 35:15to improve on for next year
- 35:18versus I went in at my absolute peak.
- 35:21I'll never be better than this.
- 35:22And I still wasn't good enough.
- 35:24I feel like that hurts a
- 35:26hell of a lot more.
- 35:27So how,
- 35:34where did you get the competitive drive?
- 35:37Cause if our audience
- 35:38doesn't remember you're,
- 35:40you were a neuroscientist.
- 35:42yes was it from the academic
- 35:45world or did you compete in
- 35:47something else so I
- 35:49competed in dance and
- 35:51gymnastics when I was
- 35:52younger um but I think I
- 35:54also I think a lot of it
- 35:56just came from my dad my
- 35:58dad has always been
- 36:00somebody who has expected
- 36:03um expected the best from
- 36:06his kids and not in a bad
- 36:08way not in a you know
- 36:10expectations are too high or
- 36:12anything like that.
- 36:12He just knew what we were
- 36:14capable of and he always
- 36:16wanted us to perform to the
- 36:18maximum of our capabilities.
- 36:21And so even when I was younger,
- 36:24competing in dance and
- 36:25gymnastics and even academics,
- 36:28he always wanted us to do
- 36:31the best we could in school.
- 36:32I competed in academic
- 36:35decathlon when I was in middle school.
- 36:39So I think
- 36:40I think a lot of it came
- 36:43from a desire to be
- 36:46competitive with myself,
- 36:48to always be pushing myself
- 36:51to be the best version of me.
- 36:52And then that kind of
- 36:56parlays into competitive
- 36:59sport and things like that.
- 37:02Is there always a part of
- 37:03you trying to impress him?
- 37:05Yeah, I always want to impress my dad.
- 37:10He's going to be at
- 37:10semi-finals again this year.
- 37:12And I'm really excited.
- 37:15You say he pushed you and
- 37:17not in a bad way.
- 37:19What did that do for your
- 37:20relationship with your dad?
- 37:24It was tough when I was younger, um,
- 37:26because you know, every kid wants to just,
- 37:30you know,
- 37:32not be a hundred percent locked
- 37:34in all the time and just
- 37:36have fun as a kid.
- 37:37And, um,
- 37:39there was some, uh,
- 37:41I don't know if animosity
- 37:43is the right word for it, but just,
- 37:46you know,
- 37:46me kind of wanting to be a kid
- 37:48and him still wanting me to
- 37:50be in perform at my best.
- 37:52Um, but as I've gotten older,
- 37:56our relationship has only improved.
- 37:58Um,
- 37:59and he's one of my best friends at this
- 38:01point.
- 38:02I love my dad's old age.
- 38:04Um,
- 38:05but it's just looking back
- 38:07and realizing and
- 38:07understanding that all of
- 38:09those things that he did
- 38:10was because he loved me and
- 38:11he wanted the best for me.
- 38:12And it's hard to see that as a kid,
- 38:15but looking back on it,
- 38:16it's a lot easier to understand.
- 38:18Yeah.
- 38:19You know, I,
- 38:21I lost my dad a couple of years ago and,
- 38:24and it's been really tough
- 38:26because it is when I was a kid,
- 38:28like I looked at things like,
- 38:30why are you making me do this?
- 38:32And then as an adult,
- 38:33you understand it now.
- 38:34And then your,
- 38:36your relationship becomes so much closer.
- 38:39Um, and I got a lot of good, I mean,
- 38:40I'm 54 and we've,
- 38:42we had a lot of good years together.
- 38:44Um,
- 38:45and so I appreciate every moment that I
- 38:46had.
- 38:47Um, but even to this day,
- 38:49I'm still trying to impress
- 38:51him and my mom, both like, um,
- 38:55with everything I do.
- 38:56So, um, I don't think it'll ever go away.
- 39:00Right.
- 39:01Right.
- 39:02And that's a good thing.
- 39:04It shows that they cared so
- 39:07much parenting that you,
- 39:09even as an adult child,
- 39:11want to do what they think is best.
- 39:15Yeah.
- 39:17So what does your dad feel
- 39:18about Tiny House on a Ranch?
- 39:22He is into it because he
- 39:23thinks that this is what's
- 39:24going to get me to the games.
- 39:26And I think it is too.
- 39:28So he supports it 110%.
- 39:29He's really excited.
- 39:31He keeps telling me this is my year.
- 39:36So yeah, he's a, when I,
- 39:37when I first kind of
- 39:40shifted my focus from
- 39:43science and the army and
- 39:44all that stuff onto CrossFit, he,
- 39:47I think was a little
- 39:48apprehensive just because, you know,
- 39:51that's not traditional.
- 39:53That's not what most parents
- 39:55expect to hear from their kids.
- 39:57And I think, you know, again,
- 39:59he just always wants the best for me.
- 40:02But since he has seen my
- 40:05growth and my success in the sport so far,
- 40:08and he's seen how much I love it,
- 40:11he has been probably my
- 40:14biggest supporter out of anyone ever,
- 40:17I would say.
- 40:20I've heard a lot of things
- 40:21about Sean's ranch and I don't know,
- 40:22is it ranch in name alone or are it,
- 40:25is it a working ranch with,
- 40:27with cattle or some kind of herd?
- 40:30It's not a ranch.
- 40:31He just has, um,
- 40:33he has a decent amount of property.
- 40:35I don't know property sizes,
- 40:36so I can't even try to
- 40:38estimate how big it is.
- 40:39Um, but it's just,
- 40:41we're out in the middle of
- 40:42nowhere in Nevada where
- 40:43people have a lot of land and, um,
- 40:47they don't have any animals
- 40:49on the land right now.
- 40:50I think they might be
- 40:51getting some chickens soon,
- 40:52which is cool.
- 40:53Um, but besides that, just some dogs.
- 40:58Yeah.
- 40:58Gotta love fresh eggs.
- 41:00Yeah.
- 41:01Oh, so good.
- 41:02Yeah.
- 41:02I'm excited.
- 41:03Um, last question about Sean.
- 41:06And that is,
- 41:07does he train in the cowboy hat?
- 41:11Not normally.
- 41:13Every once in a while we get
- 41:14him to put it on, but, uh,
- 41:16I think at some point
- 41:17CrossFit told him he wasn't
- 41:19allowed to wear it on the
- 41:19competition floor anymore.
- 41:22Wow.
- 41:23Yeah.
- 41:25So, but you can see it hanging up there.
- 41:28So dumb.
- 41:30Gotta let people be
- 41:31themselves and be individuals.
- 41:33Yeah, right?
- 41:35I know they told Nick
- 41:37Matthew he could no longer
- 41:38crop top his shirts.
- 41:40I heard about that.
- 41:41That was disappointing.
- 41:42Yeah.
- 41:43So it looks like they're
- 41:45putting their foot down on everything.
- 41:47Yeah.
- 41:48I guess uniforms are, I mean,
- 41:50it makes sense.
- 41:51If you look at other sports, you know,
- 41:53you don't see a football
- 41:54player out there cropping
- 41:55their football jersey.
- 41:57I think they would get in
- 41:58trouble for that.
- 42:00Yeah.
- 42:00They used to back in the day, you know,
- 42:02show really riff and yeah,
- 42:04their abs and all that stuff.
- 42:06And it still happens in
- 42:08college to some degree.
- 42:10Yeah.
- 42:11Where it's a little more loose, but yeah,
- 42:15So what is your realistic
- 42:16goal for this year?
- 42:20I'm going to, this is our wrap up here.
- 42:22You want to make the game.
- 42:23I want to make the games.
- 42:24That's always my goal.
- 42:26Yeah.
- 42:29Never lower the bar.
- 42:30Always strive to be the best.
- 42:33Yeah.
- 42:33And big goals are scary,
- 42:35but big goals should be scary.
- 42:36And if you're not a little bit scared,
- 42:39why are you doing it?
- 42:41My last question.
- 42:43you always rock the coolest
- 42:45t-shirts on the comp floor.
- 42:49Do you have that planned out
- 42:50for this year or still working on it?
- 42:54Still working on it a little bit.
- 42:55I do have a,
- 42:56today's the last day of my
- 42:57t-shirt fundraiser.
- 42:58So if anybody is interested
- 43:00in supporting my semifinals journey,
- 43:01you can check it out on my Instagram.
- 43:03My brother designed a shirt
- 43:05for me again this year.
- 43:06He's designed my shirt for
- 43:07the past three years and,
- 43:09And then John McCrary,
- 43:12one of the photographers in
- 43:13the CrossFit space,
- 43:13he designed a shirt for me
- 43:14this year as well.
- 43:16So I'm selling those and
- 43:17I'll probably wear those on
- 43:20the competition floor.
- 43:21And then I'm also,
- 43:23I'm working with Assault
- 43:24Fitness this year.
- 43:26So they're putting together
- 43:27some outfits for me as well.
- 43:31So that's the shirt my brother designed.
- 43:34Okay, there it is.
- 43:35Take no prisoners is a quote
- 43:39that our dad tells us all the time.
- 43:41He used to tell it to us
- 43:42anytime we went to do anything,
- 43:44whether it was a test in school,
- 43:46a dance competition, whatever.
- 43:47He would just tell us, hey,
- 43:49take no prisoners.
- 43:53Love the graphics.
- 43:54Did he hand draw that or is
- 43:56he a graphic artist?
- 43:59I think he did it on a tablet,
- 44:00but I think by hand.
- 44:02So digital by hand, if that makes sense.
- 44:04Very cool.
- 44:05And then do you have a
- 44:06picture of the other shirt?
- 44:08Yeah.
- 44:08If you,
- 44:09I think you can click through those
- 44:11pictures or just right
- 44:12there to the right.
- 44:13Oh, this one.
- 44:15Yep.
- 44:16Next one.
- 44:17Next one.
- 44:20And then that's the shirt
- 44:21that John McCreary designed for me.
- 44:24Wow.
- 44:24One fun, one classic.
- 44:26Yeah.
- 44:27Depending on your mood.
- 44:28Exactly.
- 44:30Exactly.
- 44:31I got options.
- 44:34So which one of these two
- 44:37shirts do you wear for
- 44:38something you think is a home run?
- 44:42Oh, I mean,
- 44:44I'm going to go with my
- 44:46brother's shirt because he's my brother.
- 44:48He's been next to my mom and my dad.
- 44:51My brother and my sister are
- 44:52my other two biggest supporters.
- 44:55So, yeah.
- 44:57Awesome.
- 44:57But I do absolutely love the
- 44:59shirt that John designed.
- 45:01And I think it's amazing.
- 45:02And a lot of other people
- 45:04have been loving it too.
- 45:05So I'm really excited about it.
- 45:07Love the colors.
- 45:08Yeah.
- 45:08Very cool colors.
- 45:10Kind of like your hair and kind of.
- 45:15Yeah, it actually works.
- 45:16It's like the color of my hair.
- 45:18And then CrossFit Power
- 45:20Stroke is Power Stroke Blue.
- 45:21So it's Power Stroke Blue and my hair.
- 45:24Awesome.
- 45:27Well, Leah, as always, you are the best.
- 45:31I can't wait to see what you
- 45:32do at semis this year.
- 45:34You're going to be in Carson,
- 45:35California and the home,
- 45:37the original home of the CrossFit games.
- 45:40Yep.
- 45:40It was actually Sean's first
- 45:42CrossFit games was the 2016
- 45:44games in Carson.
- 45:46Very cool.
- 45:47Yeah.
- 45:48Is he going to be with you?
- 45:50He is.
- 45:51So he'll be his first time
- 45:52back to Carson since the
- 45:542016 games is to come coach
- 45:55me at the tennis stadium.
- 45:57So it's pretty cool.
- 45:59Come in full circle.
- 46:00Yeah, definitely got to get some pictures.
- 46:03Someone take some pictures
- 46:04of you out on that tennis stadium floor.
- 46:07Yeah, yeah.
- 46:09With that,
- 46:09thank you to everybody in the chat.
- 46:11Aaliyah, as always, you are the best.
- 46:14I can't wait to see what you do,
- 46:15and we will stay in touch for sure.
- 46:18Yes, absolutely.
- 46:19Thanks for having me on.
- 46:20I don't think I'm making it to Carson,
- 46:22but we're doing wrap-up shows,
- 46:24so I may reach out to you
- 46:25to get a comment or two.
- 46:26Absolutely.
- 46:28Awesome.
- 46:29We'll talk soon, everybody,
- 46:30and see you next time on
- 46:32the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 46:34Bye, guys.
