- 0:00Huskies will be hosting Sacred Heart Saturday, November eighteenth, twelve pm kick.
- 0:05We'll start the tailgate at nine am on the Yukon Sports Network for tickets Yukon
- 0:10tickets dot com. Jamora with us a coach, just looking ahead a little
- 0:15bit to that. You got a number of guys on the roster. There
- 0:18are seniors and grads. Some will have eligibility, some will run out of
- 0:23eligibility. When you look at your roster trying to manage it going forward,
- 0:27how does that play into the overall composition? Do you kind of figure out
- 0:32which seniors are going to be around and which guys have eligibility? How do
- 0:36you start that process? Well, there's certain guys that we know are going
- 0:40to graduate and they've exhausted their eligibility and we're getting ready to honor them at
- 0:45Senior Night. And then there are certain players that have graduated, are already
- 0:50in grad school and haven't graduated from grad school yet that have eligibility, and
- 0:54then you have to decide whether or not you're going to have them back on
- 0:57your football team or if they want to come back on your football team.
- 1:00And then there's some guys that will graduate undergrad and still have eligibility left.
- 1:03And it's the same thing. You know, you have to decide together,
- 1:07you know, what their future looks like. You know what I think about
- 1:11some of these seniors that are going to be departing the program. I think
- 1:12about guys like Christian Haynes and Jackson Mitchell and Alfred Chia and you know,
- 1:19guys like that, you know, Eric Wattson Noel and all that they've been
- 1:25through in their time here, and the resilience that they've shown and the lessons
- 1:30they've learned and the impact that they've had that will continue to be felt for
- 1:34years and years and years to come. Yeah, I mean, I hope
- 1:38you come football fans community appreciates these guys because you know, I've been around
- 1:42them since their time here. I understand there's been a lot of hardship,
- 1:47you know, good bounce back last year, some unlucky stuff this year.
- 1:52These guys don't bring it any less though. I just think that is a
- 1:56tribute to you guys on the staff, but to them too, because I
- 2:00mean, the culture we live in now, the exit doors are always there,
- 2:05They're always open. You can get out, you can do something else,
- 2:07you can you know, I don't know what the term is, but
- 2:10it happens too often. We're trying to keep guys on the you know,
- 2:14on the path, trying to do the best they can. That's not easy,
- 2:17but you've been doing it. And these guys I think are a great
- 2:21example of that. Well, if you quit in life, you're never going
- 2:24to get anywhere. And these guys got no quit in them. And that's
- 2:27a credit to them, certainly, not us. That's just who they are,
- 2:30that's their character, that's their fiber, that's because of their mom and
- 2:34dad and their families, and really just what they've built themselves into and their
- 2:38mental toughness. And I respect the heck out of those guys. I consider
- 2:40myself very fortunate to have been able to spend a couple of seasons with these
- 2:44guys, and I've learned a lot from them, and I feel beholden to
- 2:47them to make sure that we stay on track with this program and get it
- 2:51where they were, you know, trying to help us get it. Any
- 2:54success we have in the future will be a direct link back to guys like
- 2:59Jackson, and to guys like Christian and back to Nowell. I'm back to
- 3:01Eric and guys like that and Rayonte, and you know, we gotta we
- 3:06got to honor them, and then we got to honor them in the future
- 3:08by by building on what they've done, the example they've set through tough times,
- 3:15you know, through a little, like you said, a little tiny
- 3:15bounce back. But uh, those are guys that you can always look back
- 3:20to and say, do it like that guy did it. Do it like
- 3:23he did it. Yeah, act like he did it, have his mindset,
- 3:24have his attitude, have his work ethic, and then you've got a
- 3:28chance to be successful. Yeah. I had this discussion with Dan Hurley,
- 3:30the basketball coach last year or two ago, I think when the transfer portal
- 3:37became a real big thing in sports, right college sports. So I'm gonna
- 3:42ask you the same thing. Dan was saying, I got to get into
- 3:44that portal because I got to get some experienced players who are available to help
- 3:47us. Everyone else is doing it and we're falling behind. And he was
- 3:52able to do it two years ago and that really helped. So going forward,
- 3:55for you, what's the plan, what's your thought on how you're going
- 4:00to attack that part of setting up a roster, because it seems more and
- 4:03more every year. Every team we play, they're loaded with guys. So
- 4:08I guess that's a never ending struggle or whatever you want to call it to
- 4:13try to get in that portal and find the best players to help your team.
- 4:17Well, we're attacking the portal hard. We've got eleven or twelve high
- 4:21school commits, and we're done with this year's high school class. It's all
- 4:25about the portal now. And we've identified guys that we think may go into
- 4:29the portal, Guys that have been already gone into the portal. We've evaluated
- 4:31them. At a certain point in time. We'll be able to make contact
- 4:34with them if they are in the portal or if they're going in the portal,
- 4:38and we have a plan in place, but we are going to be
- 4:40super aggressive this. You know, I don't know who says it, but
- 4:43someone says, you know, Yukon will be open for business or whatever they
- 4:47say, you know, when they're talking trades and stuff in pro sports.
- 4:51We have to add talented, experienced players to this roster. And you you
- 5:00know, we've made the point on this show before how unfortunately or fortunately there's
- 5:05been a shift and the portal is directly related to name, image and likeness
- 5:11or the ability to compensate these athletes, and it's a it's really become a
- 5:16necessity that you have the ability to compensate these players, either through your collective
- 5:23or through corporate you know, outside or they have agents now that are helping
- 5:27them get things. You know, I'm really excited that there's people in the
- 5:30Yukon community that fully understand that and are stepping up. And I know it's
- 5:35a hard ask because you know, your money is your money. Just the
- 5:42last few weeks, we've made a lot of progress in that area, and
- 5:45we need to make a lot more, but we got a lot of people
- 5:47that are completely committed to helping us there and that allows us to attack the
- 5:51portal that we wanted the way we wanted and to attract some players that are
- 5:57going to be able to help this team become the a team that all of
- 6:00us Yukon people wanted to become. Yeah, it's so important, no question
- 6:04about it. Take a quick break here, we'll be back. We'll take
- 6:09a look at or hear from coach about James Madison. What a year they're
- 6:13having nine and Oero. They are on a major winning street that's coming up
- 6:16next on the Yukon Football Coaches Show from Learfield
