- 0:29Speaker 2: and make this a two part episode. So this is
- 0:31Speaker 2: part one of our interview with Jimmy Rounds. Jimmy talks
- 0:36Speaker 2: a lot about his chances of making the Hall of Fame,
- 0:41Speaker 2: what made him such an elite defender at Shortstop, and
- 0:45Speaker 2: his development as a hitter over the years, and as always,
- 0:49Speaker 2: if you know Jimmy, a ton of fantastic insight on
- 0:54Speaker 2: all of those topics. Part two is gonna come out
- 0:56Speaker 2: next week. He talks about the twenty twenty six Phillies.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Jim and I share some stories about why we loved
- 1:02Speaker 2: covering Jimmy so much, a lot of laughs in Part two,
- 1:06Speaker 2: and we finished by talking about what Jimmy is up
- 1:09Speaker 2: to off the field. That's six p'in one one podcast
- 1:12Speaker 2: with Ryan Howard and Jimmy has a few surprises, a
- 1:17Speaker 2: few surprises of what he is up to in the

- 1:42Speaker 2: Jay Rowl Welcome to the Phillies Show.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Happy holidays, likewise, thanks for having me. Glad to be
- 1:47Speaker 1: here with a couple old buddies.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Yeah, man, this is so good. We're really excited. We've
- 1:52Speaker 2: been looking forward to this for a while. And you know,
- 1:55Speaker 2: there's holidays right now, you got Christmas, you got New
- 1:57Speaker 2: Year's and uh, you know for you'll also have like
- 2:01Speaker 2: the Baseball Writers Hall of Fame ballots are due in
- 2:04Speaker 2: the next couple of weeks, and I'm wondering, does this
- 2:08Speaker 2: change this month for you? Do you start looking on
- 2:10Speaker 2: the internet to see who's you know? How are you
- 2:14Speaker 2: feeling about the Hall of Fame and.
- 2:16Speaker 1: All that no. Actually, this I can honestly say this
- 2:20Speaker 1: might be the first year that I didn't even think
- 2:23Speaker 1: about it. And I say that as in, like, I
- 2:27Speaker 1: think I've just been so busy, you know, before we
- 2:29Speaker 1: came on, I was just talking about the number of
- 2:32Speaker 1: We've had two deaths and a birthday and it's all
- 2:35Speaker 1: happened within the last month. And and maybe that's a
- 2:39Speaker 1: good thing in a sense that it's taking my mind
- 2:41Speaker 1: off of licking or am I going to get a
- 2:44Speaker 1: call like hey, you're trending a certain way? So I
- 2:47Speaker 1: haven't really had much time to think about it. To
- 2:49Speaker 1: be honest, in the past years, I would say I
- 2:52Speaker 1: would get a little bit nervous, like, man, you know
- 2:54Speaker 1: what's going to be Like, Okay, I'm not going to
- 2:56Speaker 1: get in this shit, but what are my numbers gonna
- 2:57Speaker 1: look like when they announce it. That has been a
- 3:00Speaker 1: case this year, and it's I guess it's been a
- 3:04Speaker 1: relief in a sense of not having to worry about
- 3:06Speaker 1: that because I've been so busy doing so many other things.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I mean, certainly, you know, all three of us have
- 3:12Speaker 2: said on this show many times, we think we think
- 3:14Speaker 2: you're a Hall of Famer.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I was just looking at Jason Storry.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I don't want to like embarrass you or anything like that,
- 3:19Speaker 2: but Jason Stark had these great numbers. I just want
- 3:21Speaker 2: to read a couple of them for you.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And why I think so.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Jimmy Rownd, Derek Jeter, cal Rick and the only shortstops
- 3:28Speaker 2: in baseball history at least two hundred homers, twenty four
- 3:31Speaker 2: hundred hits, eight hundred and fifty seven extra base hits
- 3:34Speaker 2: are more than any other shortstop in history not named Derek,
- 3:37Speaker 2: Jeter or cal Ripkin nine straight seasons or at least
- 3:41Speaker 2: fifty extra base hits and or nine Street nine seasons
- 3:44Speaker 2: with at least fifty extra base hits and thirty steals,
- 3:47Speaker 2: more seasons than any shortstop who's ever lived. Only shortstop ever,
- 3:52Speaker 2: two hundred homers, four hundred stolen bases, MVP franchise hit later.
- 4:00Speaker 3: You know, go Glover.
- 4:02Speaker 2: You know, and I've said this too before, Jimmy, Like,
- 4:04Speaker 2: I really appreciate the way you played shortstop. Now, like
- 4:07Speaker 2: once you're you know, I'm like, god, man, it was
- 4:10Speaker 2: like an event when Jimmy made an error an right,
- 4:15Speaker 2: what happened on that play?
- 4:16Speaker 3: Dude?
- 4:17Speaker 2: Like yeah, what what in the world happened.
- 4:19Speaker 1: You don't do that. I was. I was taught early
- 4:22Speaker 1: by John Vukevich. She was a great mentor of mine,
- 4:25Speaker 1: a man that I think we all love. You either
- 4:27Speaker 1: love him hate him. He was one of those guys
- 4:29Speaker 1: there was no middle ground. You love Vuk or you
- 4:32Speaker 1: hated Vuk. And we had run ins early. We got
- 4:35Speaker 1: all that out the way, but man, he drilled me
- 4:38Speaker 1: and drilled me along with Larry Boa, on making the play,
- 4:42Speaker 1: making the routine play. And he would tell me, your
- 4:45Speaker 1: athleticism will help you make the great plays, but your
- 4:48Speaker 1: job is to when that ball is hit to you
- 4:51Speaker 1: and it's two outs, the picture should be walking off
- 4:53Speaker 1: the mound. And that was always my mentality, where it
- 4:56Speaker 1: was no outs went out, two outs, hit it to
- 4:58Speaker 1: me and it's over. So when I did making air,
- 5:03Speaker 1: very few were feeling. I think maybe it would come
- 5:05Speaker 1: from throwing, like just dropping arm angles, you know, getting
- 5:08Speaker 1: a two semier having it run. I felt like, man,
- 5:12Speaker 1: I didn't do my job, and it was almost get
- 5:16Speaker 1: the next ball hit to me mentality, so I can
- 5:18Speaker 1: make up for it. And there's no way to make
- 5:19Speaker 1: up for it unless it's like on one more pitch,
- 5:21Speaker 1: like if I make an Era Era and it's two
- 5:24Speaker 1: whiles and it's ten more pitches, I cost this pitcher
- 5:27Speaker 1: probably in an and that's how I felt. So there
- 5:29Speaker 1: was a lot of pride that went to my defense.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I was always a defensive player. First. I loved the offense,
- 5:34Speaker 1: don't get me wrong. Don't get me wrong. I love
- 5:36Speaker 1: getting on base, stilling and being exciting in that essence,
- 5:39Speaker 1: but I loved playing defense. There was never a day
- 5:43Speaker 1: I wasn't out there taking ground balls, working on my
- 5:45Speaker 1: craft to make sure that I felt confident going to
- 5:50Speaker 1: the game. I knew I could catch the ball, but
- 5:53Speaker 1: I want to have that confidence that I made every
- 5:55Speaker 1: single play that could possibly happen before the game started
- 5:59Speaker 1: so when it happened, and always I wanted to look
- 6:01Speaker 1: like magic, Like you know, I missed twenty before I
- 6:05Speaker 1: called the one and learned how to do it the
- 6:06Speaker 1: first time, then a second time, then over again. So
- 6:09Speaker 1: it was always a thing for me to go out
- 6:11Speaker 1: there put in a work so defense look effortless and magical.
- 6:16Speaker 4: It's funny you're talking about We talk about your defense
- 6:18Speaker 4: a lot on this show because I loved watching you
- 6:21Speaker 4: play defense. I was always amazed at how you mentioned
- 6:25Speaker 4: sometimes you get down and to seem it, but your
- 6:28Speaker 4: release point was incredibly consistent. It was always boom boom,
- 6:33Speaker 4: and it came across that diamond with a lot of force.
- 6:36Speaker 4: I remember your first spring training, Big League spring training
- 6:40Speaker 4: at Jack Russell Stadium.
- 6:41Speaker 3: You were an invite. Jess Relford was the start shortstop.
- 6:46Speaker 4: And you were there a couple of days and you're
- 6:48Speaker 4: working your magic in the infield and DESI comes up
- 6:50Speaker 4: to me and goes, this cat can play. And but Nan,
- 6:58Speaker 4: people don't realize you used to get on the mom
- 7:00Speaker 4: in high school and bring it at ninety four closing
- 7:02Speaker 4: out games, right.
- 7:03Speaker 3: I mean that arm strength was real.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Yeah. It was something that I give a lot of
- 7:08Speaker 1: credits to my father, although he wasn't a baseball player.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And it's funny, you know, just having all these funerals,
- 7:14Speaker 1: you start getting the stories about your parents and aunts
- 7:17Speaker 1: and uncles. But my dad always said he played a
- 7:20Speaker 1: little bit of baseball. He actually played a lot more
- 7:23Speaker 1: than he let on. And this comes from people like
- 7:26Speaker 1: now we're around the Rollins's, the homes and all these people,
- 7:29Speaker 1: we played baseball all the time. I'm like, my dad said,
- 7:31Speaker 1: he played wine game, got hit in the shin and
- 7:32Speaker 1: walked off the field. It's like, no, your dad was
- 7:34Speaker 1: out there every weekend. He tried to play. He wasn't
- 7:36Speaker 1: very good, but he was out there. So he had
- 7:39Speaker 1: the foresight. When I was twelve years old, we would
- 7:42Speaker 1: go over to Lanty College where he went to school,
- 7:45Speaker 1: ran track there, and at twelve, he already had me
- 7:49Speaker 1: throwing off the sixty foot mound to get my arm strength,
- 7:52Speaker 1: arm strength better for the forty five foot mount that
- 7:55Speaker 1: we were playing on. But it wasn't that he wanted
- 7:58Speaker 1: my arm strength better for me being a twelve year old.
- 8:01Speaker 1: He was looking at next year and the years beyond that.
- 8:04Speaker 1: This is where you're going to be. So there's no
- 8:06Speaker 1: we already have this part under control. We've dominated this part,
- 8:09Speaker 1: but if you really want to dominate. It was learning
- 8:11Speaker 1: how to throw the ball through the strike zone from
- 8:14Speaker 1: sixty feet six inches, and at that time it's still
- 8:19Speaker 1: a big fan of Dave Stewart. I would put my
- 8:21Speaker 1: hat down, you know, try to look like smoke and
- 8:24Speaker 1: I will try to and I would spin the ball,
- 8:27Speaker 1: force him and try to spin it and go have
- 8:29Speaker 1: it going through the strike zone, not just to the catcher.
- 8:31Speaker 1: He would be back there. Now, I say, try to
- 8:33Speaker 1: throw it through my glove, like, let me stop the ball,
- 8:36Speaker 1: don't throw it to the strike zone, throw it through
- 8:37Speaker 1: the strike zone. From then I learned about arm strength
- 8:41Speaker 1: and about the three quarter releases, trying to really pull
- 8:43Speaker 1: down on the ball and make the ball feel like
- 8:45Speaker 1: it's going to hit the ground, and just playing out
- 8:49Speaker 1: Kurk Shillen did that on the mound. He would throw
- 8:51Speaker 1: balls that felt like it's going to be in your
- 8:52Speaker 1: shin and it was knee high. And so after doing that,
- 8:56Speaker 1: we started getting tubes and just working on arm strength
- 8:58Speaker 1: because he knew and I knew I wasn't going to
- 9:00Speaker 1: be the biggest guy. My dad always said, you don't
- 9:02Speaker 1: have to be the biggest, but you're going to be strong,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and that when when your opponents play against you, whether
- 9:08Speaker 1: it's basketball, football, or baseball, that you want them to
- 9:10Speaker 1: walk away say, man, that dude can play. So that
- 9:12Speaker 1: was that was, you know, I guess what DESI saw
- 9:16Speaker 1: my arm strength. There were things that I worked on.
- 9:18Speaker 1: None of this was was born in the lab. It
- 9:20Speaker 1: took a lot of work in the years, but also
- 9:22Speaker 1: foresight from my dad understanding what the future was I
- 9:25Speaker 1: was just worried about today. He had the bigger plan
- 9:28Speaker 1: and I was able to stay on track, staying.
- 9:31Speaker 3: On that defensive theme.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Jimmy, I mean you to me, were one of the
- 9:34Speaker 5: most consistent shortstuff. I've seen a lot of them omar
- 9:37Speaker 5: vs scale self. As far as consistency. From what I've
- 9:42Speaker 5: seen over the years in my career, I don't think
- 9:44Speaker 5: there's anybody as consistent as you were. I was wondering,
- 9:48Speaker 5: you've only won like four or five gold gloves, you
- 9:51Speaker 5: probably one about eleven of them. Does that bother you
- 9:55Speaker 5: that you never got to the I mean to me,
- 9:58Speaker 5: I felt like you were disrespected in that regard because
- 10:02Speaker 5: I didn't see, by any stretch of the imagination, anybody
- 10:06Speaker 5: as consistent and as dominant on the field at that
- 10:09Speaker 5: position as you were during the course of your career.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I appreciate Ruben uh so disrespect. I wouldn't say that far.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I just took it, especially in my first two to
- 10:22Speaker 1: three years, as in you know, there there there's a
- 10:25Speaker 1: there's an order, there's an order, and your time will come.
- 10:30Speaker 1: We had Rent Area, we had Orlando guys that were
- 10:33Speaker 1: making great plays. Gonzales down in Florida. That guys that
- 10:36Speaker 1: I looked up to, like, man, they make these crazy
- 10:38Speaker 1: looking plays, but they would have you know, high arizon,
- 10:41Speaker 1: just just regular routine balls on the plays that you
- 10:43Speaker 1: should make. But they were making extraordinary plays. I think
- 10:47Speaker 1: for me the first time, and I wouldn't say disrespect,
- 10:50Speaker 1: but I was like, wow, I'm confused. It was I
- 10:54Speaker 1: think maybe five oh six when Isterus won it with
- 10:58Speaker 1: the Dodgers, and I'm like, there's this no way, There's
- 11:01Speaker 1: no way he wins the go glove over me. At
- 11:04Speaker 1: that point I kind of got upset and kind of
- 11:08Speaker 1: made it a mission. I was never out there to
- 11:10Speaker 1: win go gloves. It was out there to play good defense,
- 11:12Speaker 1: to be consistent that when the ground balls hit to me,
- 11:15Speaker 1: my pitcher knew that that was an out there feels
- 11:18Speaker 1: a big double play that need to be turned. Ground
- 11:20Speaker 1: ball to me, were turning that double play. But that
- 11:23Speaker 1: year I was That's the first time I was really
- 11:25Speaker 1: upset about not win. I think I was like, now
- 11:27Speaker 1: I put in my time and if there was a line,
- 11:30Speaker 1: I was in line before this person. But somehow they
- 11:33Speaker 1: leapfrogged me. And at that point that made me upset.
- 11:36Speaker 1: But I aggree I should have won more than four.
- 11:38Speaker 1: I'm grateful to have won four, but I thought there
- 11:40Speaker 1: were a number of years that I was just overlooked, disrespected,
- 11:45Speaker 1: as you say, but just wasn't given credit for the
- 11:48Speaker 1: defense that I played. And I don't know what criteria
- 11:52Speaker 1: goes into playing defense. I know a lot of years
- 11:54Speaker 1: is about how many hits you get instead of how
- 11:56Speaker 1: many hits you take away. But I was never out
- 11:59Speaker 1: of the running. But four is a little low, honestly,
- 12:04Speaker 1: but at least I got that four. Can't plan about that.
- 12:08Speaker 5: I'll tell you that from my opinion, there's no question
- 12:10Speaker 5: in my mind that you were disrespected, and you should
- 12:13Speaker 5: probably add closer to eight or ten of those suckers,
- 12:15Speaker 5: because if the criteria were truly about the best glove
- 12:21Speaker 5: in the game, which it was originally my dad was
- 12:24Speaker 5: getting it back in sixty four, when it was truly
- 12:28Speaker 5: about the defense, there was no question in my mind
- 12:31Speaker 5: you were the best year in year out.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Just I don't disagree route, I don't disagree like and
- 12:38Speaker 1: with that, which is a great point which I alluded to. Yeah,
- 12:41Speaker 1: it literally became about the best hitting shortstop one go gloves,
- 12:45Speaker 1: which had nothing to do with defense. And I always
- 12:48Speaker 1: said that that what does you know, even talking with
- 12:54Speaker 1: riders and you know, National riders like yeah, but this
- 12:57Speaker 1: guy hit thirty home runs. I'm like, what does it
- 12:59Speaker 1: have to do with the fence? Absolutely nothing, like absolutely nothing.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Those are two different sides. You want to give this
- 13:05Speaker 1: guy a silver Slugger, go ahead, But it has nothing
- 13:08Speaker 1: to do with making the plays and catching the ball
- 13:11Speaker 1: and saving runs and being in the right position, controlling
- 13:15Speaker 1: the infield because as a shortstop you're the captain, and
- 13:17Speaker 1: getting people lined up and cut off some relays, and
- 13:19Speaker 1: and honestly getting on the outfielders. I love to get
- 13:22Speaker 1: on outfielders they made when they threw the ball to
- 13:23Speaker 1: the wrong base, Like what are you doing? Like, I'm
- 13:26Speaker 1: there's a game that I know that needs to be
- 13:28Speaker 1: played that if the situation costs concede this runner advance
- 13:32Speaker 1: and to keep this double plan order, then do that.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Let's make the right play to give ourselves to get
- 13:37Speaker 1: get out of an inning. And those were things I
- 13:39Speaker 1: felt like I always did and we're control of, but
- 13:42Speaker 1: it became it became about the bat and not about
- 13:44Speaker 1: the glove.
- 13:46Speaker 2: And yeah, the I mean, you know, the defensive metrics now.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I would love to see nowadays if you're playing right now,
- 13:52Speaker 2: like how you were grade out and like that that
- 13:55Speaker 2: cast crushing, you know, because defense. Here's another stat I
- 13:59Speaker 2: want to where I talk about defense. Defensive run saved.
- 14:02Speaker 2: I think you're like one hundred and forty one point
- 14:05Speaker 2: one defensive run saves across your career, more than any
- 14:08Speaker 2: shortstop and twenty five seasons since the retirement of Ozzie Smith.
- 14:13Speaker 1: So I didn't know that.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Yeah, kind of short change on this some of the
- 14:17Speaker 2: other like the war metrics on defensive war. I'm like,
- 14:20Speaker 2: I would That's why I would love just to see
- 14:22Speaker 2: if they could go back and like replicate.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Right right, yeah that I mean ever, I mean obviously
- 14:30Speaker 1: everyone who knows me, Ricky Henerson my all time favorite player,
- 14:33Speaker 1: no doubt about it. And I said, and people think
- 14:35Speaker 1: I'm joking because I've been like five seven since I
- 14:38Speaker 1: was twelve, there were times when I played with the
- 14:40Speaker 1: kids my age, I've kind of felt like I was
- 14:42Speaker 1: cal Ripkin, like one of the taller short stops longer
- 14:45Speaker 1: then I would play up though I played with the
- 14:46Speaker 1: fourteen fifteen year olds, and then I was like, Okay,
- 14:48Speaker 1: now I'm Oggie Smith, and so my game was really
- 14:52Speaker 1: evolved around those two until Mike board It came up
- 14:55Speaker 1: with the Oakland A and it's like, okay, well here's
- 14:57Speaker 1: a guy who literally just catches and throws. Catches and throws.
- 15:00Speaker 1: So I had three really good shortstop to kind of
- 15:03Speaker 1: model my game after. And it really depended on if
- 15:07Speaker 1: I felt tall that day playing with kids my age,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and I was kind of average height versus playing up
- 15:11Speaker 1: with the fourteen fifteen year olds and I felt small,
- 15:13Speaker 1: so I was I was auzzy. So for that comparison,
- 15:16Speaker 1: I had no idea of that. So thanks for that.
- 15:20Speaker 1: There's a lot, honestly, and Ruben knows he knows me, well,
- 15:23Speaker 1: you guys know me. Well, there's a lot about myself
- 15:26Speaker 1: and where I fit in that I never paid attention
- 15:29Speaker 1: to because that was never my thing. It was only
- 15:31Speaker 1: about winning and helping my teammates become better and building
- 15:35Speaker 1: a belief system that we can actually win this, Like
- 15:38Speaker 1: we're not here to go home every September and watch
- 15:42Speaker 1: somebody else play in October. Like we can actually win.
- 15:45Speaker 1: So all those things, if they always say, and I agree,
- 15:47Speaker 1: if you play long enough, you're putting in and work
- 15:50Speaker 1: and you're healthy enough, you will put up good numbers
- 15:54Speaker 1: if you're a good player, and I was able to
- 15:55Speaker 1: do that. But a lot of it I just honestly
- 15:58Speaker 1: don't know because unless it was to my attention that
- 16:01Speaker 1: it was never mindtent other than I always said I
- 16:04Speaker 1: want to be a Hall of Famer, that was for sure.
- 16:06Speaker 1: I came from the Bay Area. I come from the
- 16:07Speaker 1: Bay Area, and if you look at the ballplayers from
- 16:10Speaker 1: the Bay Area, it's like it's it's a tradition, like
- 16:13Speaker 1: if you're playing the sport, you're planning to be one
- 16:15Speaker 1: of the greatest, and ultimately that means getting too the
- 16:18Speaker 1: Hall of Fame.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Wow, he just charged.
- 16:21Speaker 4: I mean Bay Area Hall of Famers, Henderson Stargelle, Morgan.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Frank Ryan, Joe Morgan. I'm missing h David Blue. I
- 16:36Speaker 3: mean he was I'm not sure is he in the
- 16:37Speaker 3: Hall of Fame. He was a great one.
- 16:39Speaker 1: If he was, he's a great one. But yeah, so
- 16:43Speaker 1: there there there's just been a history of ratings there.
- 16:46Speaker 1: So I'm like, I didn't I don't well now with
- 16:49Speaker 1: c C you know, prior to that, I'm like, I
- 16:54Speaker 1: don't want Ricky to be the last one to get in.
- 16:56Speaker 1: So now c c CC is taking that. So now
- 16:58Speaker 1: it's like, now I don't want seem to be the
- 17:00Speaker 1: last one to get in. Uh so Uh, It's that
- 17:03Speaker 1: the Bay Area has always been rich in sports, but
- 17:06Speaker 1: especially baseball. Though the Open A's are no longer there,
- 17:09Speaker 1: you have the giants that still represent baseball in the
- 17:12Speaker 1: Bay What are you.
- 17:13Speaker 4: Most All the times we've talked to I don't know
- 17:16Speaker 4: that I've ever asked you, what are you most proud of?
- 17:17Speaker 3: In your career? The all time hits leader, You're on
- 17:20Speaker 3: the Wall of Fame, you're an.
- 17:21Speaker 4: MVP GOGLEO All Star World champion, and you're also a
- 17:28Speaker 4: soothsayer where the team to beat?
- 17:31Speaker 1: So that really the seventh season, And I say that
- 17:36Speaker 1: because it built the belief system. It it literally was
- 17:42Speaker 1: a launching pad for us as an organization for that
- 17:46Speaker 1: five year stretch that we had. But it was a
- 17:48Speaker 1: belief system and went from us talking about it in
- 17:52Speaker 1: spring training the year prior, actually two years prior, where
- 17:58Speaker 1: we got close, you know, a week left and somebody
- 18:02Speaker 1: knocks us out. In two thousand and six, I think
- 18:05Speaker 1: we were all in Washington, d C. Watching the Pirates
- 18:08Speaker 1: in Houston, and I remember everybody we saw this soft
- 18:12Speaker 1: line drive come off the bat. I forgot who the
- 18:14Speaker 1: hitter was and we were jumping up and down like
- 18:16Speaker 1: it's in the gap. We got the one game playoff
- 18:18Speaker 1: and Bigio just goes up and it's like, what the heck?
- 18:22Speaker 1: You know? Was that us hoping from that to you know, like,
- 18:25Speaker 1: you know what, We've been close so many times. The
- 18:29Speaker 1: Braves are no longer the division champs, and it was
- 18:31Speaker 1: like the light bulb was or the shade off, the
- 18:34Speaker 1: division was taken off and it was wide open. And
- 18:37Speaker 1: you know Pat Gillick, you know, coming over as a
- 18:39Speaker 1: gym and coming in saying we're years away, and you know,
- 18:43Speaker 1: I could curse on this, right yeah, sure, I'm like,
- 18:47Speaker 1: fuck that, Like, I don't half years. I'm already five
- 18:51Speaker 1: six years and two this. I don't have three more
- 18:54Speaker 1: years of a rebuild, you know.
- 18:57Speaker 5: And there was nothing to his madness there, Jimmy, nothing.
- 19:00Speaker 1: It works. It works the hell off, I tell you
- 19:03Speaker 1: that much. I don't know anyone else felt about it, Bud.
- 19:06Speaker 1: He said that I was pissed. I'm like, what the
- 19:07Speaker 1: fuck are you talking about?
- 19:08Speaker 3: Bro?
- 19:09Speaker 1: Like we have it right here, Like what are you
- 19:11Speaker 1: talking about? Which led to two thousand and seven, when
- 19:14Speaker 1: I was asked about, you know, the division, I'm like,
- 19:17Speaker 1: look at what we have. The trades were making. We're ready,
- 19:22Speaker 1: Like we are absolutely ready. And it was just more
- 19:25Speaker 1: so the Braves losing finally their grip hold on a division.
- 19:30Speaker 1: And it was like, we played the Braves well, we
- 19:32Speaker 1: played the Mets well, who just wanted the vision. We're
- 19:34Speaker 1: not afraid of the fucking Mets, so why not. It's
- 19:37Speaker 1: at they're older. Shit, That's how I felt. They're really
- 19:39Speaker 1: old and we're really young, and and yeah, with the
- 19:43Speaker 1: team to be and I and I stated why although
- 19:46Speaker 1: we got clipped. Thankfully, it got clipped and ran on
- 19:48Speaker 1: like a wildfire thanks to a LUCKI couldn't wait to
- 19:50Speaker 1: get up to New York. But it was really how
- 19:59Speaker 1: I felt. It wasn't it wasn't just popping off. And
- 20:02Speaker 1: you know, yeah, I'll talk trash, don't get me wrong,
- 20:05Speaker 1: But I talk trash because I know I have something
- 20:07Speaker 1: to bring with it. I'm not just talking for fun
- 20:10Speaker 1: or for the sake of it. Sometimes, yes, it is
- 20:12Speaker 1: psychological warfare because I want to see how you react.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Because I know what I can stand on. I know
- 20:17Speaker 1: how to handle my business. But maybe you don't. So
- 20:19Speaker 1: I'm adding that pressure to you because if you feel
- 20:22Speaker 1: that pressure, that gives me an advantage. So there was
- 20:24Speaker 1: a little bit of that in there, but it was
- 20:26Speaker 1: more so for us to lock inward and black guys.
- 20:30Speaker 1: If the Mets can do it, and we can beat
- 20:33Speaker 1: the Mets, come on, like let's let's let's be real
- 20:35Speaker 1: about this. And it and it took an entire season,
- 20:40Speaker 1: and there were plenty of games, especially in the second half,
- 20:44Speaker 1: when we're looking at this big old delta between us
- 20:48Speaker 1: and the Mets, and I'm in the mire after games,
- 20:51Speaker 1: after getting our bus kicked, like all right, maybe maybe
- 20:54Speaker 1: maybe you bid off little. How about just get to
- 20:57Speaker 1: the playoffs and if you don't win a division, you
- 21:00Speaker 1: started out trying to win a division, but you get
- 21:02Speaker 1: to the playoffs as a wild card. Just maybe that works.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Just just you know what, let's get to the playoffs.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Then the next night we go win fifteen or two,
- 21:10Speaker 1: and it's like, oh shit. It was almost like they
- 21:12Speaker 1: felt my energy and god, I really felt like I
- 21:15Speaker 1: was being lifted up at times and it's like, nah,
- 21:18Speaker 1: we got you, you know, we like we got you.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Can get back out there, And I was able to
- 21:23Speaker 1: keep you know, pushing forward. But it wasn't all me.
- 21:25Speaker 1: It was you know, them believing and from not believing
- 21:29Speaker 1: in what I said or thinking I'm crazy to send
- 21:32Speaker 1: that belief system start to build up and them lifting
- 21:34Speaker 1: me up every time I felt like I was getting
- 21:36Speaker 1: ready to fall, and us winning a division although we
- 21:39Speaker 1: got knocked out, but to the World Series the next
- 21:41Speaker 1: year being the winners losing and then obviously things just
- 21:46Speaker 1: didn't go as we as we wanted. But it was seen.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Shoot at that year, twenty five guys plus how many
- 21:52Speaker 1: injuries we had, Reuben, you know, this whole system of
- 21:56Speaker 1: guys is coming up and buying into this is hours
- 22:00Speaker 1: we will win. That was my proudest moment of my career.
- 22:04Speaker 1: It culminated an MVP, but it was seeing just everybody
- 22:07Speaker 1: buy into something. To me.
- 22:09Speaker 4: You you you made that comment and then you wore
- 22:13Speaker 4: that comment every day of that and you backed it up.
- 22:18Speaker 4: So like, what twenty triples.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Yet thirty home runs.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Over forty doubles, I don't know.
- 22:28Speaker 4: I mean, you wore that comment every day and you
- 22:32Speaker 4: backed it up.
- 22:33Speaker 3: It was what an amazing season?
- 22:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it was. I lost fifteen pounds by the way,
- 22:40Speaker 1: but I felt strongest. I felt, you know, ussaying boat fast.
- 22:44Speaker 1: I felt like I was flying that last game of
- 22:47Speaker 1: the season when I got that single and a stove
- 22:49Speaker 1: sac and stove third. You can tell me I wasn't
- 22:51Speaker 1: Superman that day.
- 22:56Speaker 5: It was.
- 22:56Speaker 1: It was. It was, it was. It was a heavy
- 22:58Speaker 1: burden gym, It really was, you know. I It wasn't
- 23:04Speaker 1: the intent to put that pressure on my teammates or myself.
- 23:10Speaker 1: There's enough pressure being being out there, or perceived pressure,
- 23:14Speaker 1: as as Jalen Hurts puts it, because a lot of
- 23:17Speaker 1: it is perceived. It's from the outside influences, and but
- 23:20Speaker 1: no one did. There's more pressure inside that clubhouse. And
- 23:22Speaker 1: that's looking at each other in the face when we
- 23:24Speaker 1: do something good or or or not so good. That's
- 23:29Speaker 1: pressure that I have to go in after a moment
- 23:31Speaker 1: where I feel like I caused a team, you know,
- 23:33Speaker 1: a loss, to look at my teammates and then have
- 23:36Speaker 1: to go in front of you guys and answer the
- 23:37Speaker 1: questions and stand up. You know, you you can't bag away,
- 23:40Speaker 1: you can't duck your head. The city doesn't allow that.
- 23:44Speaker 1: But if you call yourself a leader, then you have
- 23:47Speaker 1: to stand up and take and and take that al,
- 23:50Speaker 1: take that beat, and but show up the next day
- 23:51Speaker 1: prepared to write that wrong.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Jimmy, let's stretch to the offense a little bit.
- 23:56Speaker 5: I wanted to talk to you because you're not big
- 23:58Speaker 5: in stature, you do have great handspeed.
- 24:01Speaker 3: As a hitter, and that kind of stuff.
- 24:04Speaker 5: What happened to you mentally to start to think that
- 24:08Speaker 5: you believed in being able to drive the ball consistently
- 24:11Speaker 5: into the gaps then later on out of the ballpark.
- 24:14Speaker 5: I remember having conversations with the raising thing and no
- 24:17Speaker 5: way he's gonna.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Hit thirty runs right that transition. That was something I
- 24:25Speaker 1: always knew how to pop. I remember my first home
- 24:29Speaker 1: Remember my first home run, like out over the fence
- 24:32Speaker 1: home run playing in Oakland Bay Ruth. And you know,
- 24:36Speaker 1: with with my dad batting practice, I'm launching them just
- 24:39Speaker 1: all day. It became a thing. It was just like
- 24:41Speaker 1: I just learned how to create that angle to get
- 24:44Speaker 1: the ball in the air. But in the game it
- 24:47Speaker 1: never happened. Hit my first home run and left center.
- 24:49Speaker 1: My dad still still has it. He has he still
- 24:51Speaker 1: has the footage of it in center field. He's I
- 24:54Speaker 1: hit the ball, he turns the camera and I'm running
- 24:56Speaker 1: around the base. I'm like, I knew it. I think
- 24:58Speaker 1: it was off Erica Cotton, I mean, and she was
- 25:00Speaker 1: she was striking with everybody. I'm like, you're not gonna
- 25:02Speaker 1: strike me out. So I had actually ended up hitting
- 25:04Speaker 1: the home run off of her. But that was my first,
- 25:07Speaker 1: my first.
- 25:09Speaker 3: But shout out to Erica. Shout out to Erica.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I would say about between four and five, I had
- 25:20Speaker 1: gone down to work with Tony gwyn Uh. Jack Jones
- 25:25Speaker 1: allowed me to come down to San Diego stay at
- 25:27Speaker 1: his place, and we had put in some work and
- 25:29Speaker 1: I was just learning about back path and I'm watching
- 25:31Speaker 1: Jock and Tony work and they're doing these impossible drills
- 25:34Speaker 1: for me. They're hit putting the ball off their back
- 25:36Speaker 1: leg and hitting bullets at the lefts in the corner
- 25:39Speaker 1: and I would do it and I would just kept
- 25:40Speaker 1: hitting pop up after pop up or rollover and I'm
- 25:43Speaker 1: just like, man, I don't know if I can do this.
- 25:46Speaker 1: And I would get frustrated and Tony'd be like, why
- 25:48Speaker 1: are you getting upset because you asked me to do
- 25:51Speaker 1: something I can't do, And I'm just going off and
- 25:53Speaker 1: it's like, but it's getting upset going to make you
- 25:55Speaker 1: any better? And I'm like no, He's like, so, why
- 25:57Speaker 1: are you getting upset? So the first thing I learned
- 25:59Speaker 1: to do was not get upset at the struggle. Defensively,
- 26:02Speaker 1: I knew it the struggle led to greatness, but offensively,
- 26:05Speaker 1: I just wasn't accepting not being able to do something
- 26:08Speaker 1: I'm watching them to do with their eyes closed. Tony
- 26:10Speaker 1: Gwyn is a different man, Let's just be honest. He
- 26:12Speaker 1: could do anything with the bat, and Jock was his pupil.
- 26:16Speaker 1: And then so I learned that lesson. And then I
- 26:18Speaker 1: started hearing about Barry Bonds learning how to catch the
- 26:21Speaker 1: ball and what that meant. And I think we had
- 26:25Speaker 1: who was at Cody Ransom came over from the Giant
- 26:27Speaker 1: somewhere around that time, and he was talking about how
- 26:30Speaker 1: he would work with Barry and drills that they would do.
- 26:33Speaker 1: So I had Tony on one side, who's the bottom
- 26:36Speaker 1: hand guy hitting the ball? The other way Berry on
- 26:38Speaker 1: the other side, who's the top hand guy on driving
- 26:40Speaker 1: the ball? And then my real mentor, Bobby I Bray
- 26:43Speaker 1: you getting and him literally fixing my swing, fixing the
- 26:48Speaker 1: little the I guess the little barrel dropped that I
- 26:51Speaker 1: would do and would cause a lot of bat lag
- 26:53Speaker 1: and pop ups. And once I straightened out, I, once
- 26:55Speaker 1: I got both sides my front arm, learned how to
- 26:58Speaker 1: pull the bat down without having a do this and
- 27:00Speaker 1: popping that elbow up, which is they kind of teach
- 27:03Speaker 1: this dumb launch angle thing. Now, once I learned how
- 27:06Speaker 1: to do that, I was able to put all three
- 27:08Speaker 1: pieces together. Bottom hand has a job, top hand has
- 27:12Speaker 1: a job. As long as I was conscious of this
- 27:14Speaker 1: and making that move as I turned, the bat will
- 27:17Speaker 1: drop me to slot naturally and swing up as you
- 27:21Speaker 1: turn through the ball. Then I said, okay, Barry says,
- 27:24Speaker 1: catching the ball knowing where my barrel is. If I
- 27:27Speaker 1: treat that as a glove, I can catch the ball
- 27:30Speaker 1: on the barrel. And it just started making sense. I mean,
- 27:34Speaker 1: it was a lot of trust me. It's a lot
- 27:37Speaker 1: of Bobby telling me, get up, get out regular day,
- 27:40Speaker 1: Come on me, me and Rick can have to watch.
- 27:42Speaker 1: It was a lot of that until I figured it out.
- 27:44Speaker 1: And then I would get to spring training and get
- 27:47Speaker 1: on an iron mic and I would get as close
- 27:48Speaker 1: as I could because I heard Pete Rose did it,
- 27:50Speaker 1: and I would just stand as close as I could.
- 27:53Speaker 1: And when you're standing so close, you can't waste you
- 27:56Speaker 1: can't waste motion. There's no wasted movements when the ball's coming.
- 28:00Speaker 1: It's probably like one hundred and twenty miles prior. When
- 28:02Speaker 1: that close and I started barreling the ball and then
- 28:05Speaker 1: catching the ball started making sense. It didn't take a
- 28:08Speaker 1: lot of effort or movement to catch the ball. It
- 28:11Speaker 1: was just being efficient from A to B. Once I
- 28:14Speaker 1: did that, I was like, Okay, what happens if I
- 28:16Speaker 1: tried to manipulate the ball in the air. What happens
- 28:18Speaker 1: if I tried to manipulate the ball for a low
- 28:20Speaker 1: line drive? And feeling that difference? And I learned and
- 28:24Speaker 1: when I especially count leverage, when I had a count
- 28:27Speaker 1: of pitch that I knew I had, you know what
- 28:29Speaker 1: if I execute this move, I know what the results
- 28:32Speaker 1: should be. And it just started to happen and happen.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Then I was able to get in the groove. I
- 28:37Speaker 1: knew certain pitches, certain counts that I was in position
- 28:41Speaker 1: to do damage, and I wasn't afraid of it. I
- 28:43Speaker 1: think also was given freedom when Charlie came over, to
- 28:47Speaker 1: be able to hit the ball in the air and
- 28:49Speaker 1: try to drive the ball out the yard. Charlie like
- 28:52Speaker 1: he wants you to hit, he wants you to get hits.
- 28:54Speaker 1: He didn't want the ball in the air for pop ups.
- 28:56Speaker 1: But if you're going to drive the ball out the yard,
- 28:58Speaker 1: he was going to let you go. He'd give you
- 28:59Speaker 1: that three green light. And I looking that dug out
- 29:02Speaker 1: and I'm like, hell yeah, Charlie, yeah, you know, and
- 29:05Speaker 1: I would be rewarded. And I hit some three old bombs,
- 29:07Speaker 1: my three zero counts. I was a real good hitting
- 29:09Speaker 1: counter flick over the years. So it was just a
- 29:12Speaker 1: matter of me learning and then also me being allowed
- 29:16Speaker 1: to when Charlie got there to regime. Before that old school,
- 29:19Speaker 1: you know, hit the ball on the ground, use your speed,
- 29:22Speaker 1: got in a lot of trouble with the ball went
- 29:23Speaker 1: in the air. But with Charlie, it was like, you know,
- 29:27Speaker 1: until you prove you can't do it, I'm gonna go
- 29:29Speaker 1: ahead and let you, you know, be yourself and be
- 29:32Speaker 1: all that you can't be and get out the most
- 29:34Speaker 1: out of your abilities. So all that to say, it
- 29:37Speaker 1: took a lot of work, and then I was half
- 29:39Speaker 1: Then I was given permission to go ahead and make
- 29:41Speaker 1: those attempts to do that, and I was able to
- 29:45Speaker 1: have some succession driving the ball out the art. Great stuff, man,
- 29:48Speaker 1: great stuff, Thank you. I thank them. It was them. They,
- 29:52Speaker 1: I mean they put in work.
- 29:53Speaker 3: I listen, I studied baseball.
- 29:55Speaker 5: I studied hitting for a long long time the leagues,
- 29:58Speaker 5: and you know, if you want to get you got
- 30:00Speaker 5: to study and you gotta work at it. And yeah,
- 30:02Speaker 5: that explanation to me, I've never heard it before. And
- 30:05Speaker 5: I loved hearing Austin time.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I like that. But look, I had to go
- 30:08Speaker 1: to Bobby. I literally we were at the VET and
- 30:12Speaker 1: so it took a year and and me and Bobby laughed.
- 30:14Speaker 1: It took about a year and a half before he
- 30:16Speaker 1: worked with me. I'm like, Bobby, like, what is it.
- 30:19Speaker 1: I'm like, let me come work with He was like, okay,
- 30:21Speaker 1: come work with me. But he never invited me to say, okay,
- 30:23Speaker 1: come work with me. So I had to literally find
- 30:26Speaker 1: out his schedule, which kind of, you know, got me
- 30:28Speaker 1: in a little trouble sometimes, you know, the Bobby or Bray,
- 30:30Speaker 1: you schedule and figure out when he would hit. And
- 30:34Speaker 1: it was never before he'd go in after BP, when
- 30:36Speaker 1: the cage was open and everybody's in there eating and lunching.
- 30:39Speaker 1: He'd go, he'd go in and start doing this work.
- 30:42Speaker 1: So one day I just happened to sneak in and
- 30:44Speaker 1: he laughed at me. I was like, I got you.
- 30:46Speaker 1: And so from then on we worked and worked and
- 30:50Speaker 1: worked until we got it right.
- 30:52Speaker 3: I love your invitation to Charlie giving you the three
- 30:55Speaker 3: old Greens.
- 30:57Speaker 1: I like that Bill rings.
- 31:03Speaker 2: That that's the best about Charlie though. I know, you
- 31:05Speaker 2: know he was just so positive and just built you
- 31:07Speaker 2: guys up. Do you think he has can do stuff?
- 31:09Speaker 2: And I know, like there were times after a game
- 31:11Speaker 2: where not necessarily you, but somebody would swing it a
- 31:14Speaker 2: three to zero pitch and pop it up and then
- 31:16Speaker 2: we'd go, do you want him swinging at three open? Goddamn,
- 31:19Speaker 2: it's over the plate, you know, I want in that count.
- 31:23Speaker 2: And it made so much like it made so much
- 31:27Speaker 2: swinging at the first pitch. Well, if it's a good pitch,
- 31:29Speaker 2: yeah I want I'm swinging at it.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Man. It's funny because in today's game, like, there was
- 31:35Speaker 1: a lot of things I think players in my generation
- 31:37Speaker 1: got in trouble for, especially as leadoff hitters. And yes,
- 31:40Speaker 1: leadoff hitters have switched. Now your lead off hitter now
- 31:42Speaker 1: hits fifty home runs and the lineups were situated, you know, differently,
- 31:48Speaker 1: But I always felt so you're telling me I need
- 31:52Speaker 1: to sacrifice maa bat for somebody three three hitters for
- 31:57Speaker 1: three hitters later like that made no sense. I did
- 32:00Speaker 1: my homework the same way they did their homework. They're
- 32:03Speaker 1: gonna pitch me completely differently. Then they're gonna pitch Ryan Howard,
- 32:06Speaker 1: Chase Uddley, Pat Burrow, Jada or Bobby Bray. You and
- 32:09Speaker 1: those guys. They're not pitching me the same way, So
- 32:13Speaker 1: why am I taking pitches for them? So you want
- 32:17Speaker 1: me to take a ninety three, ninety four fastball right
- 32:20Speaker 1: down the middle so you can see his breaking ball, Well,
- 32:22Speaker 1: now don't. I don't want to see his breaking ball.
- 32:24Speaker 1: That pitch is not meant to be hit. And that
- 32:26Speaker 1: was my mentality and I would get in a lot
- 32:28Speaker 1: of trouble for it. But if you look at my career,
- 32:31Speaker 1: me swinging early one to oh counts, the numbers played
- 32:35Speaker 1: out that that was the best time for me to
- 32:38Speaker 1: be swinging the back and going back to Charlie, it
- 32:41Speaker 1: got to a point where yeah, he didn't care, oh oh,
- 32:46Speaker 1: and it's one nothing. I did my job, Oh oh,
- 32:49Speaker 1: and I had a weak round ball. Then we got
- 32:50Speaker 1: to talk about it. But I still have permission. I
- 32:54Speaker 1: still have permission. That was the biggest Having freedom is huge,
- 32:58Speaker 1: having freedom to go ahead and play your game. Right
- 33:01Speaker 1: or wrong. It was on It was on me to succeed.
- 33:05Speaker 1: But right or wrong. I had that freedom where in
- 33:07Speaker 1: the past years, in the early years, it was like
- 33:09Speaker 1: a lad ufit are supposed to see fourty five pitches,
- 33:11Speaker 1: and I'm like, well, the more pitches I see, the
- 33:13Speaker 1: worse I get. Right, That's just what it was.
- 33:15Speaker 2: I was just trying to look I was trying to
- 33:17Speaker 2: look this up and I couldn't find it. But I
- 33:19Speaker 2: know I've looked it up once in the past, because
- 33:20Speaker 2: you would get killed a lot for swing at the
- 33:22Speaker 2: first pitch. And I remember looking up the stat one
- 33:24Speaker 2: time in your career numbers when you put the first
- 33:27Speaker 2: pitch in play in any of that you were hitting
- 33:29Speaker 2: like three thirteen career, Yeah, twenty career. When you put
- 33:33Speaker 2: the first pitch of it that bat in play, you
- 33:36Speaker 2: did very very well.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Yeah, trust me, I'm very aware of this. But I
- 33:41Speaker 1: could you know, I couldn't use it as an argument.
- 33:43Speaker 1: I'm not going to go to the media and answer
- 33:46Speaker 1: a question that way. It is what it is, you know,
- 33:49Speaker 1: if you really want to look it up. I know
- 33:50Speaker 1: where I suceeed and it's my job to know that.
- 33:54Speaker 1: And anyway, Charlie gave me permission, So talk to Charlie
