Ep. 241. Who is Claire Temple in Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:10
Hello, Marvel. Fans, comic geeks and all nerds
• 0:12
in between. My name is Megan and I am here
• 0:14
  with another character breakdown and.
• 0:15
If you'll remember last week we talked about Lynda Carter, who
• 0:18
is Marvel Comics night nurse, but today we're going to talk
• 0:21
about Claire Temple. So if you've seen any of the
• 0:24
Defenders series that originally came out on Netflix, then you
• 0:27
know exactly who Claire Temple is.
• 0:29
She's the one that tied all the shows together and all of the
• 0:33
Defenders together. She had a relationship with each
• 0:35
of the Defenders and every relationship was vastly
• 0:38
different from the others. But have you ever considered who
• 0:41
she was in the comics? If you checked out my video
• 0:43
about the Night Nurse, then you know that Claire from the series
• 0:46
is actually a mash up of Claire Temple and the Night Nurse.
• 0:49
Two different comic book characters brought together
• 0:51
perfectly in one live action character.
• 0:53
With that said, let's talk about who Claire is in the comics.
• 0:57
Claire first appeared in Hero for hire #2 in May of 1972 and
• 1:01
was created by Archie Goodwin and George Tuska.
• 1:04
Dr. Claire Temple was born and raised in New York City, where
• 1:07
she built her life and career from the ground up.
• 1:09
She married her college sweetheart, Bill Foster, but
• 1:12
over time their relationship fell apart and they eventually
• 1:15
separated. Claire threw herself into work,
• 1:18
taking a job as a doctor under Doctor Noah Bernstein at a small
• 1:22
storefront clinic on the 42nd St.
• 1:25
Her life took a turn when she crossed paths with Luke Cage,
• 1:28
better known as the Hero for Hire Power Man, after he
• 1:31
survived A brutal hit that should have killed him.
• 1:34
Claire was stunned to discover that he was practically
• 1:37
unbreakable when she brought him into Bernstein's clinic.
• 1:41
Things escalated very quickly. Bernstein himself was under
• 1:45
pressure from a criminal syndicate, and Claire suggested
• 1:47
Luke step in. That decision pulled her deep
• 1:50
into Luke's world. She was even kidnapped by
• 1:52
Diamondback, forcing Luke to come to her rescue.
• 1:56
Afterward, she backed up his story to the police, and
• 1:58
somewhere in the chaos, the two of them started falling in love.
• 2:03
Their relationship was anything but simple.
• 2:05
Claire saw first hand how dangerous Luke's life was,
• 2:08
walking in on him, being flirted with by clients, patching him up
• 2:12
after fights, and standing by him through everything from
• 2:15
random St. violence to bizarre encounters with a man posing as
• 2:19
everything from a war vet to a dystopian cop.
• 2:22
Still, they found moments of peace, like quiet walks through
• 2:25
snowy streets that ended in a kiss.
• 2:28
But danger kept finding them, as it always does.
• 2:32
Claire was targeted more than once, even getting falsely
• 2:35
accused of murder during a botched kidnapping scheme.
• 2:38
Luke risked everything to declare her name, breaking into
• 2:41
jail just to hear her side of the story.
• 2:43
When the truth finally came out, it only brought them closer for
• 2:47
a while. Claire became Luke's anchor in
• 2:50
his darkest moments, especially when guilt and loss weighed him
• 2:53
down. But she also had her own path.
• 2:56
She left New York briefly to help her ex-husband in Los
• 2:59
Angeles, and even when Luke followed her there, their
• 3:02
relationship never fully escaped the strain of his life as a
• 3:05
hero. Back in New York City, the cycle
• 3:08
  continued. Attacks, enemies tied to
• 3:10
Bernstein's past experiments, a constant arguments about whether
• 3:15
his this life was sustainable. Claire stood by Luke through
• 3:19
team ups with heroes like Iron Fist and patched up more wounds
• 3:22
than she could count, but eventually it wore her down.
• 3:25
Loving Luke meant living in constant danger, and she could
• 3:28
not ignore that forever. So they separated.
• 3:32
Even after they split, Claire never stopped being who she was.
• 3:36
She treated heroes and civilians alike, patching up Spider Man,
• 3:40
helping allies like Rafael Scarf, and continuing to guide
• 3:44
Luke when he needed it the most. She worked alongside major
• 3:48
figures like Sam Wilson and even cared for future heroes like
• 3:51
Miles Morales, always staying in the center of the action without
• 3:55
needing the spotlight. No matter where life took her,
• 3:58
whether running a clinic, saving lives in a crisis zones, or
• 4:02
facing down in possible situations, Claire Temple
• 4:05
  remained steady, sharp, and fearless.
• 4:08
Because while others wore armor and threw the punches, Claire
• 4:12
was the one who kept them alive. And in a world full of heroes
• 4:16
that made her just as powerful. So that is who Claire Temple is
• 4:21
in Marvel Comics. You can see a lot of who she is
• 4:24
in the series character Claire, who's played by Rosario Dawson.
• 4:28
I think they did a beautiful mashup of bringing Claire Temple
• 4:32
and Lynda Carter together so they could create the live
• 4:36
action Claire Temple. We see it a lot of a lot pulled
• 4:40
from each of their stories as the night nurse and as Doctor
• 4:42
Claire Temple in the character. We see it with her relationship
• 4:46
with Luke. We we see it with her
• 4:47
willingness to whoever needs her help.
• 4:49
She constantly goes to bat for these people and she does
• 4:52
whatever she can to save their life.
• 4:54
So the live action Claire is a beautiful representation of both
• 4:58
characters. But I think people do get
• 5:01
confused that Claire Temple is actually a comic book character,
• 5:04
but she is not the night Nurse. If you want to learn more about
• 5:07
the night Nurse, stick around because I have a character
• 5:10
breakdown of her too and both characters are fantastic.
• 5:13
So with that being said, I hope you learned something.
• 5:16
I hope you will like and subscribe, and I hope you have a
• 5:18
  marvelous day.
