- 1:41contact me again later last night is a complicated deal, nex time. What's
- 1:45complicated about it? I'm looking for a guy named Tom Chase. You claim
- 1:48he's here in New Orleans under the name Tom James. Five hundred bucks.
- 1:52You'll tell me where he's hiding. Sure, sure, but the problem is
- 1:55he is hiding. Do good? Right now? I think it's starling.
- 1:57You saw that his last night. Yeah, it's Chase's handwriting. All right,
- 2:01I'll find him again by tonight. You know how, Barb we met
- 2:05in Asus Castle. Be there at ten o'clock tonight with a do okay,
- 2:08but you'd better produce Quintana. I don't have much time you Chase finds out,
- 2:13I'm trying to put the finger on him, neither will I. Tonight
- 2:23and every weekday Night Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the
- 2:28Action Packed Expense Account. America's Fabulous Freelance insurance Investigator is truly Johnny Dollar.
- 2:46From Special Investigator Johnny Dolly, location, New Orleans to the Home Office Universal
- 2:51Adjustment Bureau, Hertford, Connecticut assignment, The Phantom Chase matter expense account continues.
- 2:59I'm a four to twenty five long distance called at pat McCracken at Universal
- 3:02Adjustment Bureau in Hartford. Pat agreed that five hundred was a small price to
- 3:07pay if it got us a man who'd have bazzled one hundred and twenty thousand
- 3:09from a New York investment outfit. I'dem nine three seventy phone called at George
- 3:14Everson, senior partner of the investment outfit in New York. It was Everson
- 3:19who'd spotted a newspaper picture of a New Orleans bar with a man in the
- 3:22background who looked to him like Chase. Everson had been afraid he was sending
- 3:25me on a wild goose chase, and he was happy to hear his wild
- 3:28goose that just laid a golden egg. It had him ten two dollars a
- 3:35sort of newspapers in magazine, just to kill time. Yeah, there was
- 3:38nothing I could do until I met Freddy quintanat Ace's Castle at ten PM.
- 3:43Pop's Harker, the trumpet player at Asy's Castle, that told me Freddy was
- 3:45a bad one, but right now he was my only lead. The day
- 3:50Draggone finally had got dark and I was just starting to think about dinner.
- 4:00Hello, Johnny, Lola Chase may I come in? Well, yeah,
- 4:05sure, come on. Well what are you doing here, Lola? I
- 4:11thought you were in New York. George Everson told me about your phone call
- 4:14to him this morning, that you think Tom is here in New Orleans.
- 4:17Well, yeah, Everson said he hadn't told you about the newspaper picture before
- 4:21because he didn't want to get your hopes up. I know, he explained,
- 4:26I got a plane down here right away. Yeah, I'm not sure
- 4:29there was a good idea, Lolla. I dot very much. If there's
- 4:32anything you could do, I thought, if you do find Tom, if
- 4:36I could just talk to him, maybe I could get him to see that
- 4:41the only thing for him to do is give himself up and return the money.
- 4:43Oh. I wouldn't count on that, Johnny. I had to come.
- 4:47He's still my husband. Yeah. George Everson didn't go into details about
- 4:53the newspaper picture. Oh. There was an article on New Orleans Jazz,
- 4:56one of the New York papers a few days back. It showed a bar
- 4:59scene a place called a his Castle, and in the background, sitting at
- 5:01the bar with his face turned away was a man George thought might be your
- 5:04husband. So I came down here. Now you have proof he's here,
- 5:09I think, so what kind of proof? Johnny? Please tell me?
- 5:15Okay, but I'm not sure you want to see it though. Go ahead.
- 5:21Well. Last night in ASA's Castle, a character named Freddy Quintana contacted
- 5:25me. Told me he thought he had Tom Peg, that he was going
- 5:28under the name of Tom James James that's his middle name. Yeah, the
- 5:31kind of alias a lot of people use. That's not proof of anything.
- 5:36Oh, I know. Then Quintana showed me a letter he'd stolen from Tom's
- 5:41room, an unfinished letter. I checked it against the sample of Tom's writing
- 5:46I'd brought with me. It books pretty genuine. What kind of letter do
- 5:51you know? Oh? Please? May I see it? Are Lola?
- 6:03When you get this, I'll be far away. Don't try to find me.
- 6:10It's better that way. Don't know how to explain. I'm sorry,
- 6:17that's Tom's riding, Johnny. Yeah, what happens now? Oh? I'm
- 6:26supposed to meet Freddy Quintana AS's Castle down on the quarter at ten o'clock tonight.
- 6:29I want to come with you, please, Johnny, expense account Out'm
- 6:35eleven eight twenty dinner for lollanbe. She didn't say much during the meal.
- 6:41I guess there wasn't much for her to say. Afterwards, we started walking
- 6:46through the quarter toward ASA's castle. It's interesting around here, Johnny. Oh,
- 6:50yeah, the quarter hasn't changed much. You've been here before a couple
- 6:54of years ago. Funny, what is you in a job? Like?
- 7:00Why you? Well, I don't know. You just don't look like a
- 7:04person who spends most of his time looking for a fugitives and criminals. It
- 7:10seems like such a strange job for you. That's a job. Do you
- 7:14like it? Oh? I don't know. Sometimes I like it a lot.
- 7:18Sometimes I don't like it at all, like now, like not.
- 7:24Thanks Johnny for what for feeling that way? Well, I guess is my
- 7:30turn to say, funny, what about you're asking about? Well, Pop's
- 7:34Harker seemed to think I was in the wrong job too. Pop's Harker,
- 7:38an old fellow, places trumpet Todaysa's castle. You'll hear him he's blind.
- 7:42Oh yeah, that horn of his has to make up for a lot.
- 7:46But why did he think You're in the wrong job? Mostly because of the
- 7:49company I sometimes have to keep like Freddy Quintana, Oh, I hate to
- 7:57see things work out like this. What's that mean? I mean finding Tom
- 8:03this way through a cheap information peddler like this, Quintana, If you don't
- 8:09turn himself in, I'm afraid that's a pretty remote possibility. I know,
- 8:16he seems to have forgotten what sort of a person he was after his arrest.
- 8:22He wouldn't even talk to me about it. I guess he's forgotten a
- 8:26lot of other things too. All right, come on, Lola, that's
- 8:31saysis castle right ahead? You think Tom will be there? I doubt it,
- 8:35Probably just Quintana. But are he's supposed to tell me where your husband
- 8:39is hiding? Here? We are? That must be Pop Tarker over there
- 8:46in the band with the dark glass. That's him. Come on that corner
- 8:50table. This is the place in the newspaper picture. Yeah, yes,
- 9:00I can believe Tom's been here. He loved this kind of music. Real
- 9:20nice, Pops, Thank you? How you doing? Oh? Pretty good,
- 9:26Charny. I thought you said he was. He recognized my voice.
- 9:28You still mess around a mean one, daddy, Freddy, Quintana, fred
- 9:33I have to Pops, I'm not enjoying it particularly. You stick to the
- 9:37good ones, Daddy. Don't mess with the bad ones goship being about me,
- 9:41pops. Oh, Quintina, Oh why do you keep your face in
- 9:43that horn and out of other people's business? Quintina, that's all right,
- 9:46Miss Dunna will still be blowing away this year hard law after some folks could
- 9:52breathe me. Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure, who's the dame on?
- 9:56Don't worry about it, Freddy, Let's just say she's with me.
- 10:00Don't be so touchy, Okay, talk, that's all said. Oh yeah,
- 10:03I got this Chase on the ice for you. He thinks I'm arranging
- 10:07passage for him on a boat out of here with no questions asked. That's
- 10:09crazy. Business is business. Where is he now? Let's not get noses,
- 10:15Sweetie, got the smart talk, Freddy, Mine, my, you
- 10:16are in a pretty nasty mood tonight. Dollar. Yeah, so just stick
- 10:20to business. Okay, okay, yeah, I here's the address of my
- 10:24room in the house. Chase gonna meet me in my room at midnight.
- 10:26You be there in a few minutes before and Dollar be sure you bring a
- 10:31doll. You'll be sure you bring Chase eating a bike see at midnight?
- 10:35Oh what a horrible person. Yeah, he's sure not the best Johnny,
- 10:41let me go with you at midnight. I don't think that'd be a very
- 10:43good idea, Lolan, Please, why just say I'm pretty foolish. I
- 10:48guess I just want to see him once more. I know it won't do
- 10:54any good, But after you take him, I probably won't see him again.
- 11:01He wouldn't see me before, he probably won't afterwards. But just to
- 11:05see him once more, I don't know what I'd like to go back to
- 11:09my hotel and rest now. Please pick me up before you go to Quintana's
- 11:13room, Johnny. Okay, this is the address lell Quintana's rooming house.
- 11:28It's an awfully shabby places, perfect spot for Quintana. What time is it?
- 11:33Five minutes to twelve? Alright, that's going i'mber right, so here
- 11:41it is? Yeah, okay, we want not there's nobody here, Johnny.
- 11:56Well we're a little early. Okay, we'll wait. So we waited
- 12:07fifteen minutes, half an hour. Do you think he was just playing some
- 12:13sort of beendish joke on his journey. I've been stood up on deals like
- 12:16this before, but all I wasn't used to it. Pretty soon the string
- 12:20got a little too much for him. Please Johnny, I can't stand this
- 12:24anymore. Take me back to my hotel. So I did. Now I
- 12:28was right back where I started from. What no lea is? I decided
- 12:33to go back to Waste's Castle, and that's where the trailers starting. I
- 12:35sat there for a few minutes, nursing and drink. Then somebody slid into
- 12:39the chair across from me. You Janet Dollar, And that's right. How
- 12:45are you, Lieutenant Lafair, New Orleans? Please? Ah, what can
- 12:50I do for you? Lieutenant? How long have you been here, sir?
- 12:54A few minutes? Weren't you in here earlier? Yeah? What time
- 12:58you leave? Little after ten? Why where did you go to see somebody
- 13:01who didn't show up? Look, lieutenant, what's this all about? You
- 13:03don't mind? Just answer the questions? Who was this? Somebody went to
- 13:07see a character named Quintana. I was supposed to meet him in his room.
- 13:11Well you won't see him back. Well, well that's a sort of
- 13:13a long story. Look, here's my card, Lieutenant m Joan's investigating.
- 13:20You might come with me, miss why two out back? There was a
- 13:26woman with you earlier, Yes, missus Lola Chase. I took her back
- 13:30to a hotel before I came back here again. I see into the alley.
- 13:35What's this all about, Lieutenant? Go ahead, Donna, take look.
- 13:41There were two policemen and a photographer in the alley over her a doorway.
- 13:43I moved in close. A man was sprawled their face up Freddy Quintana.
- 13:50And he didn't look me in a nasty anymore, just real, tired,
- 13:54real dead. Johnny Dellar is Lieutenant la fav No Orleans. Please morning,
- 14:16lieutenant, anything new on the Freddy Quintana murder? Yeah? Oh you
- 14:22what you sent you with Quintana last night? I'm business, lieutenant, what
- 14:24kind of business down? Well, it's a long story, I'm sure.
- 14:28I think you better tell it to me. Okay, I'll be right over.
- 14:41From Special Investigator Johnny Deller Location, New orleanss to the Home Office Universal
- 14:46Adjustment Bureau, Hertford, Connecticut assignment the Phantom Chase matter Expenser count continued it.
- 14:58I'm twelve a dollar twenty keV from my hotel to police headquarters, where
- 15:01a detective Lieutenant Lefevre was waiting for me. All Right, I don't know
- 15:05what's it all about, Welleutenant. It's mainly about Tom Chase, alias Tom
- 15:09James Chase James, who's he? Former junior partner in the investment firm of
- 15:13Everson and Chase in New York City. Chase and vessel one hundred and twenty
- 15:18thousand dollars from the firm. It's not very easy to do, I know,
- 15:20but he was real smart about it. George Everson, the senior partner,
- 15:24explained how Chase had done it. You see, he specialized in long
- 15:28term investments. Oh, people at buying hold on. Uh, yeah,
- 15:31that's right. Chase juggled the accounts and over what must have been a period
- 15:35of many months, he signed off a total of one hundred and twenty thousand
- 15:37hot Everson find out about it. Oh, one of their clients suddenly decided
- 15:41to sell out. His count wasn't as fat as it should have been,
- 15:43now, that's right. Everson immediately ordered an audit. The total shortage was
- 15:48discovered in the DA's office moved in. Did Chase make any kind of statement,
- 15:52No, no, none at all. He just clammed up. Everson
- 15:56tried to get him to explain, and so did Chase his wife, Lola,
- 16:00but he wouldn't say anything. Everson raised bail for him and Chase promptly
- 16:03jumped bail and disappeared. You know I've heard stars like this before. Yeah,
- 16:08sure, open and shut embezzlement. Anybody find a moodia, Well,
- 16:12we're just guessing at that could be any one of the standard ones. I
- 16:15guess gambling days. Maybe. Oh, I don't know. As far as
- 16:18we can determine, Chase didn't do any gambling, cause you never really know
- 16:25what about a woman, and that's probably closer to it. Although I'm like
- 16:29George Everson, if it was a woman, I don't get it. Why
- 16:33you should see Chase's wife, Lola, Oh black manny like that. Still,
- 16:40woods are full of men who've run out on good wife. Well,
- 16:44there was something wrong in the happy home, all right, but I guess
- 16:47it was all on Chase's part. Was Ola told me he'd been moody intense
- 16:51for some time before the investment became gnawn. He was away from home a
- 16:55lot at night, told her he'd been working late. That too, sounds
- 16:59for me. She asked George Jeffson about it, and George told her wasn't
- 17:00so. Then there was the matter of the vacation. Vacation, Yeah,
- 17:06the last moment Tom Chase told lowly. He couldn't get away, but insisted
- 17:08she go anyway, So she went to Martha's venue alone. Well, certainly
- 17:12has all of you marks another woman, I know, I asked George Jefferson
- 17:18if he knew of any other woman. He said, no, I haven't
- 17:22had the heart to ask a little of Chase that yet, but I got
- 17:25a hunch that's what she's afraid it is. Too. Well, it's all
- 17:29very interesting, donnad. But what's he got to do with Freddy Quintana's murder
- 17:32here in nor Lens. Yeah, here's a New York newspaper last week.
- 17:37Take a look at it, article on New Orleans jet. Yeah, that's
- 17:45a picture of Asis Castle down on the quarter. George Jefferson spotted this picture.
- 17:48The fellow in the background sitting at the bar looked at him like Tom
- 17:52Chase. And Chase was crazy about jazz, and that's why you come down
- 17:56here to no Lane. Yep. Freddy Quintana contacted me night before last.
- 18:00He told me Tom Chase was in New Orleans under the name of Tom James.
- 18:03Do you have any proof to show you? A letter? Chase had
- 18:04started to Lola, then threw away. Quintana stole it from Chase's Roman handwriting
- 18:10genuine. Mm hmmm. I checked it against the sample of Chases writing that
- 18:12I'd brought with me. Yeah, it says all right. Well, Quintana
- 18:18told me to meet him in his room at midnight. He'd have Chase there.
- 18:22Apparently he was pretending to negotiate with Chase for pass each out of the
- 18:25country. Oh, so, Lola and I went to Quintana's room at midnight,
- 18:27but he didn't show, and I took her back to a hotel that
- 18:32I met you, and you showed me Freddy Quintana's body in the alley.
- 18:37It sure looks like Tom Chase didn't want to get fund. So now if
- 18:41we get Tom Chase, we got Freddy Quintana's killer. That's about the size
- 18:45of it. Lieutenant, I don't know what do you mean. Dolla Quarter
- 18:49has been my bait for a long time. So Freddy Quintana was a real
- 18:53bad boy. That's what I'm in. When a bad boy gets himself killed,
- 18:59he isn't always easy to take the man who did it, meaning there
- 19:02are a lot of them would like to have done it. Huh, Freddy's
- 19:06case along line him. I don't tell it, but we give it wor
- 19:10Tom chasead is Tom James. I get out bullet on him. He's the
- 19:15one, though he probably skipped time by now. It could be what's your
- 19:18next movie, Jenny, one that I don't look forward to. Believe me,
- 19:21well, breaking the news to Lulla Chase, I just won't believe it.
- 19:32Johnny. I know it was hard enough to think that Tom was an
- 19:36embezzler, But he isn't a killer, Johnny. He couldn't be a nice
- 19:41guy. I can get twisted up. Then when he's on the Runny sometimes
- 19:45acts like an animal. He'll destroy anything or anyone who's between him and his
- 19:48freedom. But what kind of freedom can a man have? Who's I guess
- 19:55you were right, Johnny what you said. I shouldn't have come down here
- 19:59from New York, that there was nothing I could do except get hurt.
- 20:03Oh. I can understand your feeling you had to come. But wow,
- 20:08Johnny, I wish you were working for me right now. This investigation,
- 20:14I mean, I just call it off. Pray. Isn't that simple?
- 20:18Your husband's still a fugitive. He's got to be found. That one hundred
- 20:22and twenty thousand dollars or what's left of it has to be recovered, and
- 20:25if he is responsible for Quintanna's murder, I know it was just a wish.
- 20:30Excuse me. Hello, Oh, yes, just a moment you Johnny.
- 20:40Oh, thanks Johnny Dollar. Thought I m i'd find you there.
- 20:45Anything, Yes, Tom James Alice, he gave us Tom Chase paid off.
- 20:51Oh, just located his room. Where in a room and house in
- 20:53the quarter, a couple of dozen where Quintanna live. I'll meet you there
- 20:56in ten minutes. Expenser con Adam thirteen three dollars cab fare from Lola's Hotel
- 21:07to the rooming house in the quarter. Two dollars for the fair, a
- 21:10dollar extra for speed the driver earned it. Eight minutes later, I met
- 21:14Lieutenant Lefevre at the roomming house, a dilapidated two story building. He took
- 21:18me to a room at the end of the hall in the first floor.
- 21:22There's it. I'll sign a chasing No, I'm keeping a steak out on
- 21:29the room just in case, but I doubt if he'd be back. It's
- 21:32closed. Ago, looks like he left in a hurry. Yeah. Take
- 21:36a look over here on some sharp pieces of paper with fisherman of the waste
- 21:41basket had some mistake. Images usually make burning stuff in a wastebasket no draft,
- 21:48right, some it's not completely burnt. Se if any of it makes
- 21:51sense to you, Well, this one looks like part of a letter that
- 21:53one. Yeah, yeah, this one pigs Chase. All right, it's
- 22:00like a little piece of an envelope. Could be he brought part of the
- 22:03money down here. And you see you can still read part of the letter
- 22:07head in the upper corner. Everson and the full name is Everson and Chase.
- 22:11That's the name of the firm. Chase was the junior partner. Yeah,
- 22:15well that makes it pretty clear that Tom James and Tom Chase are one
- 22:18the same. Did he rent the Rome under the name of Tom James?
- 22:22It's right, haven't got any of the details yet. There's no manager here.
- 22:25Vacancies are handled by a rental agent down the street. I see,
- 22:29here's not a child fragment. I can't forget here. Take look that's right
- 22:33in here. And there's some numbers. Looks like a twelve and twenty three
- 22:40mean anything to you? Twelve twenty three an address? Maybe possibly isn't that
- 22:48much? Hell what a dress? Oh well, if I get any bright
- 22:51ideas, I'll call you. I'm going to pay a visit to that rental
- 22:53agent. Yes, what can I do for you? Are you the Asian
- 23:08for that rumming house down the street? And that's right, said Collus,
- 23:11is the main Moraga? Collis you'd like a room? Maybe? No?
- 23:15Thanks? I want some information. What about while you rented a room sometime
- 23:18ago to a man named Tom James? I believe. Well, let me
- 23:22see. I have to look it up to keep all the rentals in this
- 23:26year book. And he'd doted, Yeah, here it is. Oh yeah,
- 23:32what do you mean? Oh yeah? Was there something special about that
- 23:36rattle? Oh indeed there was my friends a little over a week ago?
- 23:41It was yeah that what figure? And the months fade in advance? Is
- 23:45that what was so special about it? Oh no, no, that's happened
- 23:48before. It was who rented it was so special? Well, I thought
- 23:52Tom James. It was rented for mister James by a friend of his.
- 23:56Oh I sure wish I had a friend like that. Oh man, what
- 24:00a woman moded? But Tom chases investments. It was a woman, after
- 24:10all. He probably stayed under cover while she rented the room for him.
- 24:15I thought of his wife, Lola. I didn't want to see her get
- 24:17hurt anymore. Expenser con Item fourteen. Care for all this hotel? Is
- 24:22it something new? Johnny? You left in such a Hurrylla, do yourself
- 24:26in me a favor. What is it? Go back to New York now?
- 24:32Why? Well, I just think it'd be better all around. That's
- 24:34all. Something's happened. You found out something, Johnny. Please don't hold
- 24:42anything back from me. It is. I have a right to know.
- 24:48Yeah, I guess you do. Okay, I'm sorry to tell you this,
- 24:55but it looks like Tom doesn't trampl alone. Oh. I guess I
- 25:06always knew that was it. It had to be. I'm sorry. You're
- 25:12right, Johnny. The only thing for me to do now is go back
- 25:17to New York and forget. Try to forget. Thanks for everything, Johnny.
- 25:26I had him fifteen three dollars, even drinks for me, but they
- 25:30didn't take the bad taste out of my mouth. Alowline heading back to New
- 25:34York, Alawn and Chase hitting who knew where with one hundred and twenty grand
- 25:38and not alone. I thought of that scrap of charred paper with the numbers
- 25:42on it, the one we'd found in this room twelve twenty three. They
- 25:48could mean anything or nothing. Finally I gave up trying to make sense out
- 25:52of it and pick up the evening paper news section not much of interest,
