- 0:01Hello and welcome to another episode of the Christian Reef
- 0:04podcast. Today's guests are two brothers
- 0:08known as the Hearst Brothers. Their hosts of the Hearst
- 0:11Brothers podcast and they are professional musicians.
- 0:14Hailing all the way from Toronto, Canada, welcome to the
- 0:18podcast. How you doing, guys?
- 0:20Alright thank you so much for having us doing great.
- 0:23Yeah doing great. Can't complain over here.
- 0:25It's my absolute pleasure. It's always lovely to meet like
- 0:27fellow musicians and Yeah, I could probably just talk to you
- 0:31about that all day, to be honest with you we're good.
- 0:35I've got various different questions for you, broken down
- 0:38on your podcast, your music and just a bit about you guys in
- 0:40general. But yeah, I guess let's just
- 0:44jump straight into your podcast now I know the reasons why you
- 0:48do your podcast but I always like to kind of let my guests
- 0:51kind of say in their own words rather than me just putting
- 0:55words in your mouth. So talk to us about your
- 0:57podcast, how it all started for sure.
- 1:00So originally I guess the story starts with music and creating
- 1:04music creating our own music having a blast doing that.
- 1:07We've been doing it for about a year-and-a-half releasing
- 1:09singles and learning everything from A to B on how to make your
- 1:13own music realized really quickly that it's tough to get
- 1:17people to hear what you're making.
- 1:19And the promotion side is not something that we're great at.
- 1:22Nor are we throwing, you know, massive amounts of money or two
- 1:25or do we have the funds to put? Yeah, where it's promoting our
- 1:27own music. I'll just, uh, Bobby.
- 1:29I feel you. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:31I'll just a hobby and all on the side and and we noticed that
- 1:35obviously we're not the only people that are experiencing
- 1:37this problem. So we thought, well, let's do
- 1:40something different. What if we did it a podcast,
- 1:42we've got the gear for it. You know we've got lots of great
- 1:45stories that we want to share and at the same time we can try
- 1:47and expose music from other people who are in a similar
- 1:51position as us. And so that is kind of what
- 1:54conceived the idea of doing the podcast we rate and review three
- 2:00And it musicians songs on each episode and keep track of where
- 2:04they're all at, and then hopefully, if they share amongst
- 2:06their friends and we share amongst our friends, it's a
- 2:08win-win for everybody. So and yeah, we're on episode
- 2:11eight now and having a lot of fun.
- 2:13Yeah. And I think that's one of the
- 2:15best parts of it. For what we're doing is that I'm
- 2:19away at school where a part anyways and we love music
- 2:22regardless and I love listening to new music experiencing new
- 2:25bands. So it's kind of a way for us to
- 2:28chat for an hour, shoot the shit.
- 2:29It for an hour. Listen to some new music and
- 2:32like, it really just works that we'd be doing it anyway.
- 2:34So, yeah, it was kind of one of those, what we may as well
- 2:37record it and start a podcast because why not, it can help
- 2:39bands. It can help other people find
- 2:41new music as well. You know, I think you touched on
- 2:44a very good point here as well because one of the things I
- 2:46think that is really difficult. Both, when you're trying to
- 2:50promote a band or, you know, even just to create a put
- 2:54project in general, is always that issue of kind of you want
- 2:58to always be focusing on your brand.
- 2:59And promoting yourself connecting with others and
- 3:03everything, but primarily putting everything into that.
- 3:06But like a lot of people's mistake is that they don't
- 3:10Network enough, you know. They're so focused on doing
- 3:12their own thing that the, like they're not meeting people, and
- 3:15that's how you get these experiences and it's a
- 3:18no-brainer. Like I was looking at your
- 3:20podcast and like the reasons for why you were doing it, I was
- 3:23like, yeah, this, this this makes sense.
- 3:25I mean, even from like a business standpoint as
- 3:28musicians, you know, you Make connections.
- 3:31Oh, we need to plan out at all for the next 12 months.
- 3:35Oh well, we've got loads of contacts that we've made through
- 3:37this. We'll just hit everyone up and
- 3:40construct something. It's just a no-brainer, I think
- 3:43it's a great idea, but I think you totally nailed it.
- 3:46There too. Is, is thinking about it as a
- 3:48business. And even though this is a hobby
- 3:51for us and something that we enjoy doing and like Mark said,
- 3:53we'd be doing it. Anyways, I have an MBA and I've
- 3:57strong background in business. So every time, Think of an idea,
- 4:00I'm thinking of how does it work logistically?
- 4:04And just like you said, if you spend all of your effort on
- 4:06content and music but you don't have that background to think
- 4:09about how do I Network it. How do I grow it?
- 4:11How do I get it out there? Otherwise, you're making music
- 4:14for yourself, which is okay. I mean part of the reason we do
- 4:18it is just for us but musicians are going to be excited for
- 4:22other people to listen as well. 100, I'd say a lot of them
- 4:25probably all of them are like they they're in it for dead and
- 4:27other people to hear their music changing.
- 4:29One else's life and having those thoughts as well.
- 4:32You know, it's funny you mention that because I kind of just
- 4:35sparked a random memory for me, I remember when I was in my
- 4:37first band years ago, we were just these like clueless
- 4:40teenagers in her like a metal band, just trying to make it in
- 4:43London, right? And I remember something that
- 4:46really stuck a stud stood out to me was different bands attitudes
- 4:50towards you, like, everyone is in the same situation where
- 4:53you're playing to like five people and no one gives a fuck
- 4:56about you and you're just trying to make it right.
- 4:58But at the same time, Like some people's bands would be like
- 5:02really nice to you, even if they've been doing it years, or
- 5:04they've just started their attitude, would be great, right?
- 5:06It never really mattered about the age thing, but some people
- 5:10took themselves way too, seriously.
- 5:12Like, oh no, you can't talk to us.
- 5:15Like, oh, you're not good enough and it's like, excuse me.
- 5:18Last time I checked, we weren't fucking headline in, I don't
- 5:21know. I was gonna say, would stop.
- 5:23That's not even a faster, you know what I mean?
- 5:26Like, yeah. And I think that's in any part
- 5:29of Of life. There's always those people
- 5:31taking it too seriously for where they're at, like no
- 5:34credentials were actually playing the same show right now
- 5:36and you're treating me weird and it's like, all right, you know,
- 5:40that's not a fun experience. And yeah, hopefully people can
- 5:43town that down. It's just like, yeah, I remember
- 5:50hearing, I don't know if you guys have heard of this guy is
- 5:53an Entertainer presenter James Corden, so British guy.
- 5:56Yeah, right. So I mean in You case,
- 6:00interesting with him, I'll try to make the point quick so I
- 6:02don't want to talk about it much but yeah, he sort of was like,
- 6:06beloved for many years as part of various TV shows in the UK
- 6:11and then obviously started doing stuff abroad and in America and
- 6:14has made quite a career for himself but there's all these
- 6:17stories popping up about how he's unprofessional.
- 6:21He treats people, anyone that isn't a celebrity like shit and
- 6:25I feel like in many ways you know that stuff is beginning to
- 6:29haunt him now. It's and it's actually from
- 6:31getting work. That's that's the thing from a
- 6:33business, standpoint it stops you from being able to progress
- 6:38and it's like if you're a businessman regardless of what
- 6:41you do, if there's less opportunities to get work, but
- 6:44that's less opportunities to earn money, less ways to pay the
- 6:47rent, you know that means and right, right from the music as
- 6:51well, you know, you play a show with someone.
- 6:54It goes fantastic. They're great.
- 6:56Guys. You're going to play another
- 6:57show. Who do we want to invite to play
- 6:58in our show? It's Probably the same guys that
- 7:01we had a great night with the last time.
- 7:03Not the guys that are going to treat us like shit because they
- 7:05think they're better than us, you have.
- 7:07Yeah, I've had that situation where we've had.
- 7:12Like I remember one time we were doing like an EP launch for my
- 7:15first band and we were looking for bands like it was our first
- 7:19time like fully doing our own show from the ground up, selling
- 7:23our merch. You know, all this, it was
- 7:25really exciting but we needed bands to support us and we had a
- 7:28band that we'd played with A few times, you know, we were friends
- 7:31with and they were older than us and as soon as we were like, hey
- 7:34would you be on the bill? They're like hell yeah.
- 7:36And they drove down from like wherever the hell they live you
- 7:39know, quite firedance, come play with us and I always thought
- 7:43about that like how it was cool. That, you know, they were
- 7:45bothering with us. Some some teenagers or whatever,
- 7:48but I think it came down to what we've been discussing.
- 7:50Like, you know, you can be, I think you can be professional
- 7:56and take yourself seriously, but also not be a jerk.
- 7:59As is what I've sort of been driving out with this whole
- 8:01thing. Yeah, that well there's there's
- 8:04space for everybody in this industry.
- 8:06I mean you can be as competitive as you want but there is
- 8:09millions and millions of artists who are all really, really good
- 8:12and you're not really going to get any better by stepping on
- 8:15the little guy. So and you never know who's
- 8:17going to blow up. So at the same time like your
- 8:20way back, treating everybody look, little guy blows up and
- 8:23then you're trying to get there and it's like I'm not taking
- 8:25you. I'm not having you open for me.
- 8:28Exactly. I almost feel like it's at This
- 8:30point as well, in given that, you know, we have the internet
- 8:33now and with the way that things are like you want to be doing
- 8:37everything, you can to make your reputation as good as possible.
- 8:40Like, as soon as people start saying, bad stuff about you,
- 8:42that stuff will just stay and people will might might look you
- 8:46up and see that and go. Oh, I don't know what would
- 8:47people like that and then boom before they've even talked to
- 8:50you. You've lost an opportunity so
- 8:52you people sure really be looking at that like very
- 8:55seriously. Yeah it's like having a one star
- 8:57review on Yelp. Nope, not going there for.
- 9:04Wait and yelled at me. No, thanks.
- 9:06Not going back there. Yeah, I actually, on a side
- 9:11note, I came across a really interesting thing recently
- 9:13because I do marketing on a freelance level.
- 9:16That's why I studied it uni abla.
- 9:19And there's this company, I won't say the name.
- 9:22But like, they have like this new rating system where it takes
- 9:26into account, the initial review, and then puts like, you
- 9:31know, social media factors like You're following your activity,
- 9:35all of that stuff, combines it with, like the backline
- 9:41marketing practices, you, you know, put into your website and
- 9:46things like backlinks. And I domain Authority, all that
- 9:50technical jargon and instead of just taking that one review, it
- 9:54puts all of those things into one thing together and
- 9:57essentially makes its own like score based on that.
- 10:00And I thought that was a really good way of making like a more
- 10:02accurate. Score rather than just having
- 10:04one person with their opinion, who might not even be telling
- 10:08the truth as well. Like, yeah, this guy's just a
- 10:11ship poster and he only gives one star reviews well, for, or
- 10:15is a five-star poster and there one star.
- 10:18If ways to go either way, yeah, that makes sense to, you better
- 10:24bring me back to your podcast. What have you actually learned
- 10:26through podcast and so far you said you're eight episodes in.
- 10:29So it's obviously obviously still early days but yeah.
- 10:32What what? What are the key lessons so far?
- 10:36Well obviously the first couple were Rocky, just learning, you
- 10:41know, how to speak in podcaster terms, the gear.
- 10:45I mean, we went through so many technical hiccups where all of a
- 10:49sudden, we've lost our recording or, you know, we used various
- 10:53software. So I think we've got it steady.
- 10:55Now, we've learned the ropes of how our show is going to sound
- 10:59and we don't have nearly as many glitches as we used to, which is
- 11:01nice. I've also learned that there's a
- 11:05lot of really good artists out there.
- 11:09So surprised at the level of the music that were listening to it
- 11:14since it's really incredible and people are submitting to us and
- 11:17and the general premise of the show is we haven't heard the
- 11:19song before it comes on. So we have somebody else who's
- 11:22taking those submissions lining them up into three similar
- 11:25sounding songs but Mark and I have just been shocked.
- 11:28Yeah. Like there's a ton of bands, we
- 11:31did one last night and it was probably one of my favorite
- 11:33songs we've listened to like I downloaded their whole album now
- 11:36and learned to listen to their music.
- 11:38Eric and I think they have, like, 86 followers or something,
- 11:41and it's just like, I'm shocked. It's like, well, I'm not shocked
- 11:43because I kind of have been there and done that with our own
- 11:46bands and our own music and stuff.
- 11:48But you understand we may, you know, make the coolest music
- 11:51video ever. I'm so pumped about it.
- 11:53It's got, like, 200 views on YouTube and it's like, okay,
- 11:56well, but it's unbelievable. Like, and I guess that's kind of
- 11:59what we're trying to do is get those people's name out there.
- 12:02I think. Yeah, I know what you mean,
- 12:04like, years ago before I started studying marketing and all that
- 12:08stuff? Like when I was in that band,
- 12:09for example, you know, we would always struggle with the same
- 12:12thing and I think that the whole business side of things with
- 12:16being in a band and just everything that comes with that
- 12:19is its own thing entirely like you.
- 12:22It's like, and there are different things that work and
- 12:24different strategies. Like, you know, for some people
- 12:27it works just doing a kind of follow on follow kind of
- 12:31standard style of what, not necessarily the unfollowing but
- 12:34like reaching out to people and building connections that way
- 12:37other people. Just, you know, they get lucky,
- 12:39they post stuff online and it starts going viral, it starts
- 12:43picking up attention, obviously, there's the classic style of
- 12:46just literally just playing live and, and building Word of Mouth
- 12:50through that way. But yeah, like, as far as
- 12:52actually just branding yourself, like it's so important specially
- 12:55now. I mean, as you said, there are
- 12:57so many good bands out there and I got to say, like I've had,
- 13:01I've had some various musicians on my show who the same thing.
- 13:05They're not very well known, but I find myself yet.
- 13:08I didn't In my own personal collection.
- 13:09Exactly. Yes.
- 13:11Damn good. This is better than stuff in the
- 13:13charts. Like how is this thing trending
- 13:15but this isn't on the radio. What the hell?
- 13:18Yeah. You know it's I think that's
- 13:20Testament to where the music industry is headed and you know
- 13:24how independent music has a lot more value.
- 13:27And it I think I think back in the day independent music was
- 13:30almost kind of seen as this like dirty ugly word.
- 13:32I got its independence not signed whereas I think now it's
- 13:36it's more intriguing and more You know, like I feel like it's
- 13:39almost like a flip reverse. Like if it's it's manufactured.
- 13:43Chances are. It may be a probably be very
- 13:45polished and everything but it won't necessarily be good music.
- 13:50Yeah. For sure, for sure and gears
- 13:53come a long way to write if we're thinking back, you know,
- 13:55even 20 years. It was really, really difficult
- 13:58to do home recording at home. You either had to have thousands
- 14:01and thousands of dollars to buy the right gear or you're just
- 14:03making really shitty sounding records but nowadays Is I mean
- 14:08you can go buy an Apollo solo for 800 bucks.
- 14:12And you've got Unison preamps. You can buy all the plugins you
- 14:16want online. You can make really, really good
- 14:19sounding records at home, four thousand two thousand dollars.
- 14:24Yeah, yo spot-on. It's gotten a lot easier.
- 14:27Like, I wish you all of these tools existed when I was in my
- 14:30first bank because I've never told this story before.
- 14:33But before we did our first like actual record in a studio Udo.
- 14:39We tried to do it ourselves. This was back in want to say
- 14:432011 and we had like this you know a backing track recorder is
- 14:52like. Yeah.
- 14:53So of course you know sorry. Yeah.
- 14:56For anyone that doesn't know home, it's basically like a
- 14:58little small piece of Kit where you can record on it playthings
- 15:03backs and it's not really supposed to be used for
- 15:05recording actual stuff. It's more as Like reference for
- 15:09like, when you record a rare for something on drums or whatever.
- 15:13So, it's a reference tool. But here we are trying to use it
- 15:16in this small tiny room to record drums, Guitar vocals.
- 15:22And the most part, I mean, it sounded like trash because we
- 15:25knew nothing about production and, you know, even little
- 15:28things like timing we didn't bother using metronomes all of
- 15:31the stuff that you need to do. Yeah.
- 15:33But as far as the quality was concerned, it wasn't actually as
- 15:37bad as it. It as I thought it would be but
- 15:41if we had the access to the tools that are available now, oh
- 15:45my God. I mean, we could have produced
- 15:46some really good stuff at a much younger age.
- 15:49So yeah, musicians now I think it's always worth doing a bit
- 15:52homework, but time, you know. Yeah, it doesn't cost a lot to
- 15:56sound good. I think it's more about the
- 15:59level of effort, you put into the editing process.
- 16:01And also, just as I say doing things, like, I know, it's a
- 16:04pain in the ass using metronomes, but you have to,
- 16:07like, I Natural time in as a rhythm player and stuff like if
- 16:11I'm in the studio, we use in the fucking metronome like for sure.
- 16:14Yeah. Got it.
- 16:16This part on. What are your podcasting goals
- 16:20for 2020 one. Who for 2021?
- 16:25So we want to continue what we're doing right now is by
- 16:27weekly episodes and we are way ahead of ourselves.
- 16:31So we're lucky enough that we have kind of a bank of episodes
- 16:33built up so we can just slowly being a bit of an idiot here but
- 16:37yeah we Glee. Is that twice a week?
- 16:41Oh no. Every other week every all case,
- 16:43every two weeks. Yeah.
- 16:44Whether my God yeah you need to two episodes per month.
- 16:49Yeah. Every other Monday is our
- 16:51schedule right now. So we want to continue with
- 16:53that. We want to add kind of like
- 16:55special episodes. We're working on something where
- 16:57it's more of an artist Spotlight per se where we do, maybe a
- 17:0120-minute episode. Just focusing on one artist and
- 17:04their discography in their story because we think that'd be neat.
- 17:08And then our last goal is to start a YouTube channel.
- 17:13So we've invested in a little bit more gear where we've got
- 17:16better camera, better angles right now we're together.
- 17:19But typically, we are marks in Dublin and I'm here in Ontario.
- 17:23So that makes it a little trickier but we've got a good
- 17:26amount of content filmed and we're looking to produce some
- 17:30higher quality videos you know 10 minute videos to throw on
- 17:33YouTube. See how we do there and I think
- 17:35along those lines, do I really want to start mixing?
- 17:38Singin like music videos as well, because I think, like,
- 17:41having like, adding YouTube into it brings in a whole nother
- 17:44aspect where you can look at the song.
- 17:45But and the video not that we claim to be like, you know,
- 17:49where it's all amateur. What do you reviewing and
- 17:53reviews of the videos but just the comment on it from like your
- 17:57average consumer standpoint and watch the video and say what did
- 18:00I like about it? What it's simple things like
- 18:02that because I love the music video aspect as well and we've
- 18:05gone back and seen some really cool videos from songs Weaver.
- 18:08You'd as well. So I think touching on those, in
- 18:10the, in the YouTube videos, as well would be cool.
- 18:13I feel like the visual Medium as far as music is kind of like a
- 18:17lost art, in many ways. I mean, it's gone are the days
- 18:19of, you know, music videos on MTV, funny story about MTV.
- 18:24Actually, I read up they're not actually officially known as
- 18:28Music Television anymore. Like because I figured that,
- 18:32okay, they've changed their name to just MTV, right?
- 18:35But like it still stands for that, right?
- 18:37But they actually He changed the company knows, the company name
- 18:40is literally just MTV, but it doesn't stand for anything.
- 18:44But he that stands for nothing and it's officially labeled as
- 18:49just for, you know, reality TV or all that crap, right?
- 18:53Yeah, yeah. But I kind of feel like it's an
- 18:55important point because that's kind of where that died and it's
- 18:58it's slowly coming back here. And now you see certain artists
- 19:01kind of doing like interesting stuff here and there but it is
- 19:04kind of one of those things that it really To be a massive thing.
- 19:10And now it's kind of like it's a bit of intrigue but you know, I
- 19:13think people's heads and More in like being able to just stream
- 19:16music wherever and you know, just having access to that.
- 19:19So I think it's cool that you guys are going for that and also
- 19:22with regards to just multi platforming in general, like I
- 19:26found this as well with with my own stuff.
- 19:28That like you have a different audience on say Instagram,
- 19:32Facebook, YouTube, and people don't always migrate like
- 19:36sometimes people almost Actively refused to do that.
- 19:40So you got to kind of like just make sure your stuff is
- 19:43everywhere on that basis. As well as just being accessible
- 19:48in general. So like, you know, you have a
- 19:49presence everywhere when people search, you, they find you
- 19:52straight away. And I know all of that jazz like
- 19:54it's again, with the marketing start.
- 19:57It really is all about, that. All comes back.
- 20:00Yeah. Full circle.
- 20:02Beauty Beauty, beautiful at what am I saying?
- 20:04Stumbling my words. Let's move it forward.
- 20:08Add to your sort of goals and aspirations overall, for this
- 20:12podcast, like what are the key things that you want to achieve
- 20:15with this? I'll let you go.
- 20:18Oh boy. Yeah, I don't know.
- 20:20It's not really something that I've thought about too much at
- 20:23this time, because it really is kind of like a hobby, right?
- 20:27And it's like, we know there's yet it's fun for us but there's
- 20:31potential to, you know, get more involved with it, do put more
- 20:34production into it and like, certainly no way down the line.
- 20:38Lots of people make a living out of it or a half living and
- 20:41half-and-half and like to me that wouldn't be an all-time
- 20:45goal. It would just be Be really cool
- 20:47to watch it progressed to something where that's an
- 20:50option. And I know for like John with
- 20:52his business background, certainly has more like of an
- 20:56opportunity to involve that into stuff that you work with.
- 20:59But I think that would be like that not not a goal.
- 21:02But just something that I would love to see come from it where
- 21:04it's like we could sit down and John could be like hey I could
- 21:08like work part-time and possibly also put more effort into this
- 21:12and we could watch it grow to like an even bigger extent.
- 21:15Yeah, I agree. I think with anything that we do
- 21:19even with just the music with the podcast with videos, we
- 21:23always want to get better and that's something that we're
- 21:25driving at not even just in music but in life.
- 21:27So whatever you do, it's just constantly strive to get better
- 21:30at it. So I think as we try and grow
- 21:33the channel and become better and better and better and
- 21:35provide better content, content, a better experience for
- 21:38listeners. Yeah, be really neat.
- 21:40One day to be able to say wow, we can do kind of our thing.
- 21:45Maybe not be so worried about our careers and even if you
- 21:49decide to focus on the careers, it's like just to have that
- 21:52thought and be like, you know what?
- 21:54That was cool like this is on the background and it's
- 21:56something that we love doing people like doing.
- 22:00We're helping, you know, kind of independent musicians.
- 22:03And I think that that's just like, I think I was saying last
- 22:06night, my number one goal, right now would be to have like a
- 22:10repeat musician. Someone submit a song, we do a
- 22:13podcast on it, review it, and then Then three months later
- 22:16that same person. Go.
- 22:17Hey, here's my new song. I would love for you to review
- 22:20it a second time because then I feel like that's like, instant
- 22:23confirmation that somebody likes, what we're doing like one
- 22:26band was like I think you guys are doing a good job.
- 22:29Please keep reviewing my music. Yeah, cool.
- 22:32Awesome. Yeah, we'll see about that.
- 22:35I think I think it's always interesting.
- 22:38You know. I mean reviewers that the only
- 22:41with you I could think of on YouTube is that guy or horse's
- 22:44name. The the The most famous One
- 22:47Malcolm or her something like this.
- 22:49Like his, his his claws. No, no.
- 22:56He's going to kill myself and I'll remember this.
- 23:01It's like the needle drop or something.
- 23:02Is his official YouTube review, thing, God does gonna drive me
- 23:08nuts. Not a cockpit.
- 23:11What? Everyone to know at home.
- 23:12He's bored. He wears glasses.
- 23:14He goes in on everyone and everyone knows him coming up
- 23:19believe. I don't remember that.
- 23:20Anyway, I'll check him. I said, send it to us after when
- 23:24you figure it out it's going to drive me nuts.
- 23:27I didn't remember that. But the point is like he, he's,
- 23:32he has very, he's very honest with his musical opinion.
- 23:35Obviously he is a musician himself as well and he's clearly
- 23:38got that quite a lot of knowledge in that field.
- 23:40Field. But like people do take his
- 23:41opinion very seriously and he kind of divides people, you
- 23:46know, people who can't kind of go crazy in the comments like
- 23:49that highs for the crap, like, you can't believe what he says,
- 23:52like it's not true and other people like, no, he's totally
- 23:54right, like it's albums, excellent, or bad, or whatever.
- 23:58And the point being that, I feel that like these reviews are
- 24:03equally as important as just, you know, your own personal
- 24:07opinion like before you go in, because it can like kind of
- 24:09shaking. Keep your idea of like whether
- 24:11or not you want to kind of check this thing out or not.
- 24:14Like, for example, that guy reviewed a Green Day album, I
- 24:20think the father of all record and he basically said that it
- 24:23was just terrible and it was just done as a kind of Fu, to
- 24:27their record company because they wanted to get out of their
- 24:29contract, right? Which is a terrible reason to
- 24:31ever create music, like you should never do that.
- 24:34But when you listen to the record, like I sat down as a
- 24:37jungler try and give it a chance.
- 24:39I'll keep in And what he said, but I'm going to just give it a
- 24:42quick chart and I listen to like three songs and I just couldn't
- 24:44take it anymore, it was so bad and he was right.
- 24:49He was so right. And I feel like that that those
- 24:53kind of reviews are very necessary because, you know,
- 24:57most of the critics out there music critics, you know it's
- 25:00just official companies it's like yeah you know and that's
- 25:03that's great and everything but I don't know that you can always
- 25:05trust them that what if we're looking at movies, for example,
- 25:08I've seen so many Films. Where like the creek spanair and
- 25:12then I go see it in this excellent movie and I'm like,
- 25:15yeah, yeah, for sure. Look what way is that based on?
- 25:18And it's, it is just opinion. But it's like a very specific
- 25:22opinion according to like, I guess like an industry
- 25:26expectation. Maybe, but I feel like with
- 25:28people like yourselves, like, who are doing, you know, just
- 25:31genuine honest reviews with, you know, musicians kind of opinion,
- 25:38which is different. From a casual listening fan.
- 25:41It's like a different opinion. I'm sure you guys can appreciate
- 25:44this. Like, when you become a
- 25:45musician, you just never see music same way, ever again, you
- 25:50like every time you go to a show, you know, it's like
- 25:54waiting to go on a football field where it like fully
- 25:57dressed in gear but like you can't go and play and you, you
- 26:00know, like if you see a I don't know you hear a musician.
- 26:04It's like slightly flat you're like oh my God.
- 26:07Come on man. Just yeah, come on.
- 26:10Up. Come on.
- 26:11It's like it's part of a blessing and a curse in a way
- 26:14but I think it's very important that guys like yourselves are
- 26:17doing that. And yeah, I think there's a lot
- 26:20of value in what you're doing and one of the questions I
- 26:24wanted to ask. You actually, with regards to
- 26:26this is I know that you're obviously looking at and
- 26:30reviewing local bands in Canada. But are you sort of thinking of
- 26:34branching out maybe, you know, going International where
- 26:37there's I know that's kind of a bit crazy to think about but
- 26:39like, It is that kind of do you think where this could be headed
- 26:43or do you just want to kind of focus it on like local?
- 26:46Oh no. No, you're totally right.
- 26:48That we are taking International submissions.
- 26:50We've had an artist from Barcelona yesterday.
- 26:54Last night was Barcelona. We've had someone from the N
- 26:57Mark. We've had Dublin mountains in
- 26:59the USA as well. Yeah.
- 27:01All over the place. Thanks to this whole Tech world
- 27:04that we're living in. Yeah, we're getting artists from
- 27:06kind of all over the world. Fantastic fantastic.
- 27:10I mean, that's really important as well.
- 27:11I think having that International showcase because
- 27:14that's another thing as well. I again this is what happens
- 27:18when we use ish. Ins are in the same room.
- 27:23There is so much music in different countries that is just
- 27:26not being heard that deserves to be heard like I lived in in a
- 27:30foreign country in a country called Estonia in Europe for
- 27:34three years and I was blown away by the level of musicians over
- 27:41those incredible. It's like how is this not
- 27:43internationally recognized? And that truly oh, it wasn't
- 27:45just a bias, like I still hold that opinion to this day.
- 27:49There's music musicians there, whose music could be used in my
- 27:52movies and stuff 100% can sometimes you see bands do it
- 27:56like sucrose for example, from Iceland very famously had their
- 28:00music used in a the movie Vanilla Sky.
- 28:04If you remember that a very old movie from the early 2000s but
- 28:08good movie by the way. At ya, like it and the music
- 28:12very much Blended in with the theme of the of the actual movie
- 28:17and everything and, you know, sort of speaks volumes for how
- 28:20important music is. But point, is that music was
- 28:23fully in Iceland dish was not in English and became
- 28:27internationally recognized won awards, blah, blah blah.
- 28:30So, there is a lot to be said for showcasing International
- 28:34talent and kind of, you know, just showing that every country
- 28:38has something to offer as far Far, as music is concerned.
- 28:42Yeah, you're totally right. I don't think we've thought
- 28:44about anything that's not in English.
- 28:49I'd be hard hard for us to review because one of the
- 28:51categories we review, it is, you know, the lyrics and vocals, and
- 28:55the vocals, may sound beautiful, but we have no idea what they're
- 28:58saying. Might be a lower score on that
- 29:01front, but it would be pretty neat to Showcase something like
- 29:03that. Yeah, I think well, I don't even
- 29:05know if we've had any submissions, like we said, we
- 29:07don't we don't review the myself, but I would not be
- 29:09against it. You just take out the lyrics
- 29:11section. And comment on the vocal
- 29:13strictly but I love that stuff. I love International music.
- 29:16I think it's really cool. Let's um, let's prove.
- 29:18I'm gonna probe your the format of your show a little bit.
- 29:21So you said that, you don't do it personally.
- 29:22So, like, what, what's the format of these reviews?
- 29:25How does it work? What's your process?
- 29:27Oh, you're gonna love this. So so the show you're going to
- 29:31expect the first 15 to 20 minutes as Mark.
- 29:33And I sharing stories talking about funny stuff that we like
- 29:37just a random variety of topics and that kind of loosens us up
- 29:41and gets us In a good mood. And then from there it goes
- 29:44song, 1 2 3. So we basically listen to the
- 29:46song, we stop it numerous times throughout the song.
- 29:49So we might just stop it at a really cool part, usually will
- 29:52do it first thoughts. So after the maybe the first
- 29:54verse will stop, it will say, what do you thinking?
- 29:56What are you feeling in the first couple?
- 29:5730 seconds of the song, kind of critique it, as we go?
- 30:02And then at the end, we do What's called the we rated on a
- 30:06scale of one to ten biscuits. So we do sound quality, We Do
- 30:13lyrics and vocals. And then we do just a general,
- 30:16coolness and Vibe like how cool is this song, Would you download
- 30:19it? And then out of those three
- 30:20categories, both of us are giving one to ten biscuits,
- 30:22those all get tossed into a simulator kind of pops out an
- 30:27overall average between the two or three of us that are on the
- 30:29show and that's your overall Rank and then that goes on our
- 30:33website. We keep a leaderboard with
- 30:35everyone that we've we've reviewed at how many biscuits
- 30:37they received on the And yeah, that's kind of the format that
- 30:42we're going with. And is your podcast Audio Only
- 30:47or is it video to like was supposed to start right now?
- 30:50It's right now, it's Audio Only on, you know, apple and Spotify.
- 30:55And I think it's on a bunch of other smaller like anchor and
- 30:58stuff like that, but we have video for all of it.
- 31:02We just haven't done any long-form video production yet
- 31:07so we're expecting in the new year to be able to Hopefully put
- 31:10full episodes up on YouTube with the video.
- 31:14I don't know if we'll go back and do the old ones because it
- 31:16was the first, like I said, there was a lot of hiccups.
- 31:18The format we were doing, we're recording it through a different
- 31:21software and then we were recording the video on Zoom, but
- 31:24there was no audio there. So you're trying to line it up
- 31:26based on lips. So, really difficult to produce
- 31:30videos like that, but now we've got that kind of sorted out, so
- 31:33we could do full videos, but what we have been doing is just
- 31:37pulling together Clips. So, Thing was funny, or usually
- 31:40for every band will have one or two clips with some of their
- 31:43music and some of the feedback in that gets posted on
- 31:45Instagram. We've been getting some good
- 31:47feedback there, just based on the content that we've been
- 31:50throwing up. Excellent.
- 31:52Yeah, I mean I got I must say of all the music reviews I've kind
- 31:56of been looking at the doing stuff on, you know, YouTube,
- 32:01twitch, whatever, like they're there is a lot to be said for
- 32:05seeing the sort of physical reaction seeing like, you know,
- 32:08for example, Sometimes, it's what you don't say in your face
- 32:12that says everything. So I think it would be good for
- 32:15your viewers and listeners to be able to see that in the future.
- 32:18So therefore definite and on the, did you think you'll ever
- 32:22do? Yeah.
- 32:24Live live versions or like a twitch show or something like
- 32:27that streaming. Show that honestly haven't
- 32:33thought about that yet. That would be cool.
- 32:36Yeah, we gainst it may be like like In one finale live stream.
- 32:41Yeah. Something like that.
- 32:43It'd be something to think about for sure.
- 32:45Well, I'll have to dive into that rabbit hole later.
- 32:47Start learning more about that I've no experience with twitch
- 32:50or live streams. Technically no idea how it works
- 32:53other than, maybe just using a webcam like this.
- 32:57It can be, it can literally can be, I mean, it's pretty
- 33:00straightforward to set up like a, you know, having like one
- 33:04screen. Is you guys in another screen is
- 33:06like seeing the song of the video or whatever.
- 33:09The case may be, but I think as you guys grow and everything and
- 33:12you grow a naughty like, obviously you can grow an
- 33:14audience through that but like it will, it will get to a point
- 33:16where people will want to know like what do you guys think
- 33:19about you know this record or whatever.
- 33:21Yeah, I think that it's in. It's just an important element
- 33:24and plus yes fun. You know when I when I started
- 33:27to Twitch streaming I really didn't know what to expect but I
- 33:31think the interactivity is is like a kind of an added bonus
- 33:36and just makes the experience a lot more fun.
- 33:39You know what I mean? Because you can kind of like
- 33:41React to what people are saying and see, like, you know, is it
- 33:45good? Is it bad?
- 33:46What do people think? Is there anything that we
- 33:48haven't considered? You know, it's a way of learning
- 33:50from people? Yes.
- 33:51Only bonus is, yeah, for sure like, live feedback and being
- 33:55able to like adapt to that instantly.
- 33:58Yeah. Well I get that out.
- 34:00Who your sources of oh yeah I know.
- 34:02I know I it's no eyes. My pleasure, who your sources of
- 34:06inspiration for podcasting Teeth way questions on this.
- 34:14Yeah, you gonna catch us off-guard, I'm Barry.
- 34:19So I used to listen to a lot of podcasts when I was commuting a
- 34:23lot. Yeah, this, you know, I've been
- 34:26working for from home for the last nine months or 10 months,
- 34:28so I found that I've been listening to a lot less podcast,
- 34:32but I listened to the typical, you know, Joe Rogan Experience
- 34:35some Radiolab stuff, Bill Burr. Kind of like the comedy side of
- 34:40it. And that's what got me into
- 34:42podcasting in the first place. Now, I've started and I'm more
- 34:47excited for when I'll start commuting or traveling again,
- 34:50because I listen to a lot more. But now, I've started reaching
- 34:52out and looking into many different smaller podcasts.
- 34:56Like, we've got a friend that had us honor his once.
- 34:59Will, you know? I'll put yours on my list too.
- 35:02And there's all sorts of just different smaller podcast that
- 35:04I'd love to dive into. Once I have time, it's I think
- 35:08about a lot because you know, I've reached like 50 episodes
- 35:12now my podcast and I wonder like, who the people that listen
- 35:16to this? Does anyone listen?
- 35:19Like, I know there's people listening, their numbers are
- 35:21slowly. Increasing, obviously, I know, I
- 35:23know people that I know that listen to it and tell me that
- 35:26they do. But there's a lot of people, you
- 35:29know, random strangers that I don't know.
- 35:30And they regularly listening and I'm thinking about it because
- 35:33I'm obviously the world is kind of screwed from covid right now,
- 35:36and many people are at home. We're out of work, so that does
- 35:39affect that. But I feel like when things
- 35:41start to return to normal, you're going to see a massive
- 35:44boost in podcasting. And I think another thing as
- 35:47well with podcasting is that a lot of people kind of quit
- 35:51early, you know, I see everyone and their mums setting up
- 35:54podcasts these days and I'm like, okay come back to me when
- 35:58you know, you've reached like your first 30 and then we'll
- 36:02talk because it's, you know, it's what like for example, I
- 36:06have a friend. Shout out to Buck my Call who
- 36:10set up a podcast and he's always been, he's a good friend of mine
- 36:15online and he's always sharing my stuff and whatnot, and
- 36:18listening to her. And I said to him, like just
- 36:20jokingly as like, once you start your podcast, you will not have
- 36:24time to listen to my stuff, I guarantee it and then when we
- 36:28finally got a chance to chat when he sort of took a break
- 36:30from his podcast, he said that exact thing he was like, yeah I
- 36:33just I never have time and it's like you don't realize like how
- 36:36much goes into Podcasting and behind the scenes that you think
- 36:41like, oh, it must be easy. You just sit down talk for an
- 36:44hour or two and then you're done.
- 36:45But no, like this example, this, this is all the notes I have
- 36:50just for this podcast where I had to sit down and think like,
- 36:54what's logical, what would be interesting?
- 36:57How does it flow? You know, there's things that
- 37:00you can't anticipate like if your guests, for example,
- 37:02starts, talking about something, that's the head of your
- 37:04schedule. You can't just be like, oh, hey,
- 37:06can you, can you just like, yeah.
- 37:08Okay. Get to that later.
- 37:09Like you gotta go with the flow for sure, for sure.
- 37:13I think that it helps that were similar to us.
- 37:16You are like an unscripted in a sense podcast so you're not one
- 37:21of those people who's writing out an entire story.
- 37:23Like, can you imagine trying to put together Dan Carlin?
- 37:26Have you ever heard of Dan Carlin?
- 37:28Not a concert. Oh, you have to check this guy
- 37:30out so he has a podcast called Hardcore History.
- 37:33I think they're not on Spotify or iTunes.
- 37:36You have to get it through his website.
- 37:38Some of them are free but some of them are paid but he's a
- 37:43history expert and puts in. I've heard like 40 hours of work
- 37:49into one episode, but he is such a good Storyteller.
- 37:53The history is all extremely accurate and obviously took a
- 37:57lot of research, but just an amazing high production show.
- 38:01Highly recommend that, I'm not even a huge history guy and I
- 38:05listened to the whole Wrath of the con series about Kangas, On
- 38:08and all this stuff was fascinating.
- 38:10So cool. But yeah, that would take so
- 38:13much work to do something like that.
- 38:16I mean, obviously this this is nowhere near the same thing but
- 38:20like I remember when I started doing sort of because I also do
- 38:25episodes that aren't just interviews, they're like topics
- 38:27where I either I or I have my co-host Dutch deals that, you
- 38:31know, we talked at length about a topic and I really have to
- 38:35approach it in a different way. I have to look at like different
- 38:38Angles like how can this flat? Like I did an episode on
- 38:41University for example and recording at one time without
- 38:46much of a plan and this bear. Mine is like an hour and a half
- 38:50me talking and I was like this is trash and I deleted it.
- 38:53Hey Batter a week later because I'm like I'm sure as hell not
- 38:55doing it again right after. I've just done it, came back to
- 38:58it with a much more sort of planned out plan if that's gonna
- 39:04tell ya and it came out a lot better.
- 39:07And I've said this The podcast before.
- 39:09So sorry guys for saying this again, but I think it really
- 39:13does kind of go to show that like the level of effort that
- 39:16you put into something will ultimately determine how well
- 39:20that content comes out and you're right.
- 39:22That being a good Storyteller is is really important part of
- 39:26that. Like I feel like for interviews,
- 39:29obviously, as you said mine is more of a kind of a casual kind
- 39:32of approach but every guest is different, sometimes it will be
- 39:36as just a straightforward interview.
- 39:38And I'm always kind of a little bit on edge, every time I have a
- 39:41new guest on because I just don't know how they're going to
- 39:43be. Like, maybe it's around
- 39:45conversation, maybe it's not, you know, and it's my job to
- 39:50kind of make sure it goes well and that can be tricky at times
- 39:53but more than yeah. Yeah, I think is long as you you
- 39:57can kind of always look at yourself and kind of say, okay,
- 40:01I can tweak this, I can work on this and you kind of adjust to
- 40:06your guests. Make sure you're always Stand to
- 40:08your guests and as you say it said before, having like a some
- 40:12sort of a narrative or flow with your work really helps.
- 40:17Yeah. I mean preparation is definitely
- 40:19a huge part of that but don't sell yourself short, either.
- 40:22I mean, you have obviously the skill to do that.
- 40:24You have to be able to hold a good conversation, be an
- 40:27interesting person, adapt to who you're speaking to and and
- 40:30obviously you've got that nailed.
- 40:32So yeah, but you can totally tells stop it.
- 40:40But you can totally tell, like I listen to a lot of podcasts for
- 40:44like educational purposes schooler.
- 40:45I think it's awesome for traveling and taking time to
- 40:48study alert while you're doing it.
- 40:50And I've gone through like maybe five or six and and some of them
- 40:53it's like oh this person's not prepping their just sitting down
- 40:56and talking about a topic and and in the flow they get off
- 41:00topic there. There was oh I forgot to say
- 41:02that. I should jump back and say that
- 41:03and then you're like this is really unorganized like it's
- 41:05like a terrible lecture and then you have the people Better like
- 41:09you clearly put in the time to make this flow properly and and
- 41:13those are the ones that you're going to listen to because it's
- 41:15great like people you're getting something out of it and whether
- 41:17it's school and learning or music or education or anything
- 41:21like to have that plan. Yeah.
- 41:22You you have to have it. You have to have a plan for
- 41:25sure. I think that was the lesson.
- 41:26I learned this year. I can't remember if it was
- 41:28through my Vlogs or through the podcast, but yeah, you're out
- 41:31your bag on with that. It's the thing that I always pay
- 41:34attention to is the key thread of the of like, what's being
- 41:38Discussed that one point and making sure to always try and
- 41:42steer back to that like, I'm a big fan of professional
- 41:44wrestling, right? And I always kind of look at it,
- 41:47like think of it, like I said, wrestling promo you hate how you
- 41:51hate scripted promos. But you know that every promo
- 41:55has to have some bullet points and has to have a key thread.
- 41:59What are you trying to say? What's the topic?
- 42:02You got to come back to that. Because, as you say, if you got
- 42:04often too much of a tangent, I mean, your audience, you know,
- 42:07will kind of Blige and we'll let you do that.
- 42:10But after a while it's like, oh what he was talking about that
- 42:13like 25 minutes ago or whatever? Like, come on.
- 42:16Yeah, like that quickly. But at the same time on the flip
- 42:21side. Like if you got a really good
- 42:23conversation going and in you just interrupt your guests and
- 42:26just start talking about like oh hey I know we were talking about
- 42:29this but let's get back to you know the main event like yeah
- 42:35and ours can get sometimes can get like that to where we.
- 42:38We go off on tangents or and we a lot that space at the
- 42:42beginning of the show, for just whatever, just random this and
- 42:46what ends up happening. Most people probably wouldn't
- 42:48know this but it ends up being sometimes an hour of us talking
- 42:53about. Who knows what?
- 42:54And then it's my job then to go in and edit that down.
- 42:58Oh no I didn't see. Are you public restroom?
- 43:01Like we've know I we what we do. I don't want to go off for an
- 43:06hour about something, random. We've got three songs.
- 43:08View. So, you know, but if we talked
- 43:10for an hour, I might try and cut that down or I might think,
- 43:13okay, this piece was was really funny.
- 43:15Let's keep that. But lets, you know, we went
- 43:18we've had a few discussions that we've basically on while we're
- 43:21recording gone. Yeah, we can't use this.
- 43:24Yeah, totally. Yeah.
- 43:25Like, and I think what women were when we were first
- 43:28starting, we were kind of predicting shows to be between
- 43:31like 40 to 50 minutes and the first one, like an hour and a
- 43:34half long, and it was like, okay, so we're going to be able
- 43:36to talk for way longer than we thought.
- 43:38Thought 100%, we're on tangents and then it's like, yeah, okay,
- 43:41none of this is usable. Like someone's going to judge us
- 43:43for this and in not a good way, so we take that out.
- 43:46Not that we're saying anything too bad but you know, I think
- 43:49that when you're putting something out there for social
- 43:51media and, you know, you have careers and you have to
- 43:54certainly be conscious of what you're saying and that's
- 43:58something that's important to us, like, to not offend anyone
- 44:01and yeah, yeah. And it's hard when you get on
- 44:03tangents and you're making jokes and you're not being
- 44:05inappropriate per se, but it's like, we want to make sure that
- 44:08Everyone's happy with the content.
- 44:10I was like, oh so it's like Comics though.
- 44:13It's like what Comics do you write?
- 44:14So they are perpetually. Pushing the boundaries a little
- 44:18bit to try and get laughs and get a reaction out of whoever
- 44:21you're chatting with and that can be taken out of context
- 44:24really easily. So we might just keep pushing
- 44:27each other. And then one of us, says
- 44:28something that's totally ridiculous.
- 44:29And we realized like, oh yeah, this probably shouldn't be on
- 44:32the show. Yes.
- 44:39We have no like at least Comics have their like fan Basin and
- 44:42their celebrity to kind of be like, oh wow, that was bold.
- 44:46And then everyone laughs it goes.
- 44:47Yeah. That's just them.
- 44:48But they're like, you know, 8 episode they're going to be
- 44:50like, who the fuck are the hearse brothers?
- 44:52And these guys are dicks. That's an interesting that
- 44:56that's actually. Yeah.
- 44:58Like how celebrities kind of get a free pass for a lot of stuff?
- 45:01I mean, obviously, you have cancer culture now, which yeah,
- 45:04merging. But yeah, it takes a lot for
- 45:06people. Yeah, it is.
- 45:08Jesse has certain people get forgiven but then other people
- 45:11don't. Like I've always found that
- 45:13Dynamic weird you know. It's like yeah whistling.
- 45:16Wow. And like comedian and and not
- 45:20yeah not supporting it all but like a comedian can make a
- 45:22totally racist joke and everyone laughs and it's like okay that's
- 45:26funny and then it's like but like a podcaster, making a
- 45:29racist joke. It's like, well that's not
- 45:31acceptable on this topic actually.
- 45:33Just because it's topical the the Scottish comedian, Frankie
- 45:37boil. Recently sort of had like a pop
- 45:40at Ricky Gervais Stephen Merchant going too far with
- 45:43Jokes, which I just thought in general, was hilarious.
- 45:45Because if you know anything about Frankie boil, you know
- 45:47what his humor is like, right. And I was so happy with Twitter
- 45:52because a lot of the time when I look at Twitter comments it's
- 45:54like you never know really know like what the public opinion is.
- 45:57But everyone was like hanging about you were making jokes you
- 46:01know like 10 years ago on this sort of stuff like you got say
- 46:06that to him like come on what that's what.
- 46:08Asia's vest, come on. Like, yeah.
- 46:12And that's what comedy is all about.
- 46:13It's not, there's no truth to what you're saying.
- 46:16It's just, you're just gonna make the other person.
- 46:18Laugh. Yeah, there shouldn't be when
- 46:19there is, it's a different story.
- 46:21But yeah, a lot of times we're just trying to get each other
- 46:25going and sometimes it goes to ridiculous places but it's
- 46:28usually not inappropriate. It's just like, I don't think
- 46:30people want to hear that. Yeah, exactly.
- 46:33I will say that one of the things you said like about
- 46:35obviously, like sort of sticking to like a time limit like or
- 46:37maybe it's going to be A 45 minutes or whatever.
- 46:39Like it's taking me a while to figure out kind of how long and
- 46:42I don't truthfully have a limit. I just look at like, yeah.
- 46:46How long my guest has and how the conversation is going.
- 46:50And, you know, my podcasts have ranged anything from 30 minutes
- 46:53up to three hours in some cases. But I will say that, you know,
- 46:57like I've experienced this through going on other people
- 47:00shows that it really sucks sometimes when someone has a
- 47:03very like strict schedule, like, okay, it's only half an hour,
- 47:07like I was on someone. Of course the other day and
- 47:11we're having a really good time. I was really enjoying the
- 47:12conversation and then it was like half an hour and he's like,
- 47:14okay we're going to call a rap and I'm like, really I feel like
- 47:17we just got started. Like what?
- 47:18Yeah, but everyone in that friend on there, you know?
- 47:21And that goes, I feel like with that restraint do you're gonna
- 47:24get to the point where you're on a good talk and then you have to
- 47:28quickly like rain and be like, okay, so I have to ask you this
- 47:30question because I don't want to go over my 30 limit minute.
- 47:33Yeah, my yeah. My my 30 minute limit.
- 47:35Exactly. Look, it's better to just let it
- 47:37go. Let it happen.
- 47:38Happen and then figure out what to do with it afterwards.
- 47:41You know, mean like to what we were.
- 47:44You were bringing up earlier, but it's not just that easy, you
- 47:47don't just record a conversation and throw it out there.
- 47:50You spend hours in post editing and then, you know, even
- 47:55thinking about what I was saying that we want to do next with
- 47:57adding video to it. Well, it's okay.
- 47:59So if I take an hour and 30 minute long recording and then
- 48:02cut out bits and pieces along the way and turn it down to
- 48:05night or whatever, turn it down to an hour.
- 48:08Now, I've got to cut the video to to match that stuff to do
- 48:13that. Yeah, maybe there's a really
- 48:14easy way to do it, where you can edit the video and the audio all
- 48:17in one take. But I've not yet figured that
- 48:19out. So that would take me hours to
- 48:21get that done. Yeah.
- 48:23Hey editing, personally, it's the bane of my life and I've
- 48:26said in, like I said, on a stream that I did the other day,
- 48:28like some one of my friends online was going, oh, you know,
- 48:32you should get into editing or help your viewing and I'm like,
- 48:34look. When I have money I'll pay
- 48:37someone to be my editor. I'm not doing that shit.
- 48:40Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:42Luckily for the podcast because I have two, it's easy to cut
- 48:45clips and that but like yeah, she say, you're getting creative
- 48:47with stuff and the more time you put into it, it's just yeah it's
- 48:53it's own. It's it's a whole kind of don't
- 48:58say industry but like it kind of is in a way like just editing in
- 49:01general. Yeah, there's a team of people
- 49:04that work behind anything. Thing we watch on TV, right
- 49:07jion. You know, the big channels on
- 49:09YouTube. Those you know the Dude Perfect
- 49:12guys. They're not sitting there for
- 49:13six hours editing those videos. After they've got a team of
- 49:16people who are doing that, who are skilled at it.
- 49:19So yeah being able to do a little bit of it yourself.
- 49:21I think is valuable but goes back to the what we were saying
- 49:25earlier. Like know your strengths if
- 49:27you're if you're really good at podcasting and creating content,
- 49:30put your effort into that and then eventually you can pay
- 49:32somebody else to take care of the the nitty-gritty stuff that
- 49:35you don't want to do. This is something I can't wait
- 49:37for the day that I can have it to dog for real real because
- 49:41I'll be able to do so much more because for me for sure, easy
- 49:44par, you do research that I would happily just do my
- 49:48research, do the podcast. And be like, okay, here you go,
- 49:51go edit this. I'm going to go enjoy myself
- 49:53rather than spending the next day having to edit this.
- 49:55Because once this podcast is done, that's what I'll be doing.
- 49:58I'll be editing, you know, and he's fine like I love to do
- 50:03podcast but it's like As you say, you play to your strengths,
- 50:08you played, so to what you're good at, what you do and what
- 50:10you enjoy doing as well. I think if you don't enjoy doing
- 50:13it, then that can sort of make the whole process kind of
- 50:17lackluster and you're just like, trying to do it just to get it
- 50:20done. And that's not yeah.
- 50:21Oh, should be really in retrospect completely agree.
- 50:25We've taken the same, kind of idea to music as well, so we
- 50:29record everything our self. I'm still learning.
- 50:33And obviously, this is a long journey for mixing and mastering
- 50:35Sick, but I've gotten a lot better, but I'm still at the
- 50:39point where I don't really get the sound that I'm looking for,
- 50:42when mixing our music. And so now, I, we've just
- 50:45started. Outsourcing that.
- 50:46So will record everything. I'll put together a really rough
- 50:49demo of K. This is how I want it to all
- 50:51come together and send it over to somebody who knows what
- 50:54they're doing. Who works in a studio and just
- 50:56let them mix it. And then I work with them back
- 50:58and forth, to tweak, certain things that I may or may not.
- 51:00Like, and then yeah and we can focus on songwriting and, and
- 51:05And exactly like you were just saying touching back on that as
- 51:08soon as you are able to do that and it's not like we're
- 51:11certainly not paying like high-end professionals Do It?
- 51:13Like These are people that are starting out with mixing that
- 51:15their passion is mixing. So it's a great, we can work
- 51:18together. But as soon as it's like will
- 51:20instead of learning how to mix for another 8 hours of the day,
- 51:23we can start making another song.
- 51:24Yeah, you can see them with you instead of when you get to that
- 51:27point, instead of spending the rest of the day editing, you can
- 51:30do another podcast. You can start the research for
- 51:32the next podcast. So as soon as you get to that
- 51:35level, You get to really focus on what you're enjoying and
- 51:38really putting more time into that.
- 51:39So just a waiting game, Long Haul.
- 51:43Yeah. Can't wait for that day.
- 51:47Yeah, this is this move on. Now you obviously, you mentioned
- 51:50music. Let's talk about music you guys
- 51:54or a c in a band. How did you first get into
- 51:58music? Like where did it all begin for
- 51:59you guys? How do you want me to start?
- 52:03And then yeah, you can start. Yeah, no began with.
- 52:06Yeah. It all began with the grant
- 52:09know. We had a piano in our house and
- 52:10I think we both grew up with him like starting.
- 52:13I don't know whether it's you begin.
- 52:15Piano apps like four years old. 5 years old.
- 52:17Whatever the age might be, and our parents aren't particularly
- 52:21musical, like they love music but they don't play instruments.
- 52:24They so I don't know why, but yeah, we grew up playing piano.
- 52:28Kind of went through that phase of pianos.
- 52:30Not cool anymore. But, you know, John got into
- 52:33guitar a lot earlier. I didn't really get on that
- 52:36train until like mid University. Oh yeah, I kind of.
- 52:41So I got back in the piano a lot more to when Like, I can learn
- 52:44it on my own terms with YouTube songs that I want like, and
- 52:49that's where I was struggling with piano, like we're learning
- 52:51to play classical music. And that's just not something
- 52:53that that I get excited about. Yeah.
- 52:56And then maybe, like, third, fourth year university was, when
- 52:59I really got back into guitar, like taught myself, guitar from
- 53:03YouTube. Pretty much joined a band in
- 53:06University, and then when I graduated and now back in
- 53:10University, but that's kind of what brought us to this point,
- 53:13where we start, Like being like, wow, we should probably just
- 53:15write our own stuff and, and put together our own music now.
- 53:19So you should jammed when you were younger, but then this was
- 53:21like, the first time you like, hey, maybe we should do
- 53:24something a bit more professional.
- 53:25Yeah, well, I mean, the bands we were I was in in and University
- 53:29like we have two EPs and a full album cut out.
- 53:33So it was like, but it was kind of like just we were it was all
- 53:36my good buddies and we were having fun doing it and it was
- 53:38kind of our entire spare time was just put towards like
- 53:41playing live music and recording and writing songs.
- 53:44But in terms of like you guys specifically like what yeah, oh
- 53:47yeah, yeah, yeah. So that actually, I came into
- 53:49that story later. So again, Mark mentioned I
- 53:53picked up guitar at a really young age.
- 53:55Got really into guitar, played it forever.
- 53:58Put all the hours in when I was young, which was great.
- 54:01And then basically focused on really solo kind of isolation
- 54:08music. When I was in university, I was
- 54:11playing like looping a lot. So using a Looper /, trying to
- 54:14cover songs, by myself, ended up buying a drum kit taught myself
- 54:18how to play drums. And it was really just all about
- 54:20me, never really jammed with anybody else and wasn't even
- 54:23totally confident singing at that point and then it wasn't
- 54:27until yeah, we graduated University, Mark had his band.
- 54:30I think they came up to our Cottage once and played some
- 54:32music and was like, why don't you play with us?
- 54:34I'm like, alright, I'll play with you guys.
- 54:35Cool. And then we just realized how
- 54:37much fun that was in itself, jamming and playing live.
- 54:41So we started to grow and then I started diving.
- 54:44Into that world of live music and we got all the gear, we got
- 54:47the PA systems, brought everything up to the cottage and
- 54:49it just evolved from there started.
- 54:51Our, you know, our charitable organization where we do live
- 54:54concerts for raising money for fighting blindness.
- 54:57Oh, God, yeah. So that's something we do
- 55:00usually twice a year but this year we just did one virtually.
- 55:03So we have all our friends over play.
- 55:05Huge cover. Show raise a bunch of money,
- 55:07send it off to a great charity to support Vision research and
- 55:10then yeah it basically a year ago we decided We should
- 55:14probably just read our own music and then I do of down that
- 55:17rabbit hole head first jumped into, you know, bought logic
- 55:21started, buying all the gear that I needed and learning how
- 55:23to mix and yeah, we're a year into it, basically writing our
- 55:28own music. Yeah pretty so told me for your
- 55:31songwriting process because I think everyone every musician
- 55:34has a different way they do it. You know, Bowie famously used to
- 55:38cut up pieces of newspaper and put it together and that's how
- 55:41he made his lyrics. And I'm pretty sure some drugs
- 55:43were V 2 for you guys. Like, what's your process?
- 55:48So, I'll start this one because we have a very different process
- 55:53for two, different styles of music, which I guess I'll answer
- 55:56have yet to hear. So, the first couple songs that
- 55:58we did was very much just a learning, a learning situation.
- 56:03So, you know, yeah. Figured out what works for us,
- 56:06just wrote a couple cool licks marks in Ireland.
- 56:09I would say, hey, he'd record something on his guitar, maybe a
- 56:12lick or riff or a chord progression, send it.
- 56:14To me, I'd record drums on it, then send it back to him, he
- 56:17record space, we just kind of conglomerate this mess of a song
- 56:20and then at the very end, the lyrics get written in like five
- 56:22minutes because okay, yeah, more.
- 56:26Yeah, I did a lot of like Freestyle rapping and stuff like
- 56:28that. So it just really, really
- 56:30quickly improv just throw down a couple of verses and a chorus
- 56:34and see what happens. Do you still?
- 56:36Like because well, I tend to do like my songwriting process has
- 56:39changed over the years, in terms of like it used to be Lyrics
- 56:44have to be written first, come in and then write the song,
- 56:48right? Yeah.
- 56:49And always liked and sometimes I still do that.
- 56:51Like, if I have some lyrics ready, I'll try and fit them to
- 56:53the song and whatever, right? Yeah.
- 56:55These days I find myself kind of like a sit-down with my guitar
- 57:00and I do the reverse, I start jamming my own like this, I
- 57:03start humming and and then I think about like how, you know,
- 57:07the music makes me feel, you know, emotion-wise or whatever.
- 57:12And then I start riff In Like lyrics and it kind of like I'm
- 57:15basically writing both at the same time, which is a terrible
- 57:18way to do things but it works. I don't know for me.
- 57:22So like is that kind of what you mean?
- 57:24Like you sort of like you have everything sort of ready and
- 57:27then you kind of just jamming and trying to see like what
- 57:30works lyrically? Like totally makes sense.
- 57:33Totally. Yeah.
- 57:33Just most of it comes off the top.
- 57:35We hit. We didn't really put much
- 57:36thought into the lyrics. I think, the latest single that
- 57:40we released, we kind of sat down together, but it was really
- 57:43quick. Rick, it was like hum the
- 57:45melody. Okay.
- 57:46I like the way that that sounds, that sounds cool.
- 57:48And then for the words we had almost freestyle something where
- 57:53that may not make total sense and then afterwards, we went
- 57:56back and kind of analyzed like okay this would make more sense
- 57:59for the theme of the song of what we're trying like.
- 58:01We're trying to build a bit of a story out of the foundation that
- 58:03we've got laid and then that one came together like that.
- 58:07Now we're working on a new EP, we've got four songs in the
- 58:12works and they're very much. Hip-hop influenced which is
- 58:15totally left hand. Turn from what we were doing.
- 58:18This was more of your indie rock style so we've done real
- 58:21instrumentation real music that could be played live.
- 58:25But been that catchy almost pop like courses with a lot of
- 58:29layers and then just wrapping just hip-hop rapping as the
- 58:34verses, and it's been a lot of fun, but not really, none of
- 58:37that is written either. It's just very much freestyle.
- 58:41Cool. How does being related being
- 58:45siblings effects? You know, you while your
- 58:49songwriting, you're gigging together.
- 58:51Being obviously, as you mentioned, you know, you've been
- 58:53in different projects as well outside of this.
- 58:55But like, you know, often we hear about famous sibling
- 58:59rivalries, like a waste. This for instance, in the UK and
- 59:02famously, the Gallagher brothers were at each other's throats and
- 59:05it's some people would argue that creates very good music as
- 59:08a result and also creates, you know, problems as well.
- 59:12Like, you guys seem like you're very Bison that there's not
- 59:14really any issues ever, but I do have a kind of find contrast or
- 59:19things there that don't exist, you know, outside of, you know,
- 59:25working together or anything like that.
- 59:28Well yeah that's a good question.
- 59:30I feel like we're both just really similar and we like the
- 59:33same style of music. That's what I was.
- 59:35We like and so now that there's really never any conflict
- 59:39between us, it's kind of like and we're really half the time
- 59:43you know, will sit Down start making a song.
- 59:44We both like, oh yeah. Do that again.
- 59:46Like, I like what you're doing their record that down?
- 59:48Yeah, you do. What if you do something like
- 59:50this and then after two hours, it might be like.
- 59:52Alright, let's put that aside and just start with something
- 59:54new because we both just work really feeling it, right?
- 59:57Like yeah, it's just so we always just, I don't know.
- 1:00:00I think it's just we're excited about everything we're doing and
- 1:00:02yeah, I've never there's never like, you know, and if it's
- 1:00:07something I really want to try like, I think this baselines
- 1:00:09really cool. Let's try and mix it in
- 1:00:11somewhere, then it's like. All right, let's see what we Can
- 1:00:13do like we're there's never like ah yeah ah yeah.
- 1:00:17We had that one track. Even though we recorded a like
- 1:00:20we have hundreds of songs that we've recorded and then stopped
- 1:00:23and not gone anywhere with and maybe we'll touch back on those
- 1:00:25another day or whatever, but we had that one that you were in a
- 1:00:28huge fan of, you kind of forgot about it and then I took it one
- 1:00:32day as an inspiration and then put a ton of work into it and
- 1:00:36built it, built it built it, built it, built it up and then
- 1:00:38showed it back to you and you're like, I don't even remember
- 1:00:40doing this, this is amazing. Yeah, so, you know, And then the
- 1:00:44same thing might happen, otherwise where Mark will be in
- 1:00:46Dublin and he'll put together a whole song from something that
- 1:00:49we did or from just an idea had he'll send it to me.
- 1:00:51And I'll be like, wow, that's amazing.
- 1:00:52Let's go with that. So we just really are super
- 1:00:56open-minded and we use each other's contributions and and we
- 1:01:00both can do it on our own to. So if we wanted to, I can write
- 1:01:03a song. He can write a song.
- 1:01:04I might like it. I might add to it or we might
- 1:01:07decide as a team. Yeah, let's scrap this project.
- 1:01:10Yeah, we'll look back in a few years.
- 1:01:12How do you communicate? Kate to each other, like, if one
- 1:01:15of you really sort of likes the song and one of you hate see or
- 1:01:19isn't feeling it. Obviously, as you said, you guys
- 1:01:21got a really good relationship by the sound of things and, you
- 1:01:24know, you as you said, you're open-minded.
- 1:01:26So I'm guessing obviously the communication is very laid-back
- 1:01:29and chilled and quite easy, right?
- 1:01:31But like, obviously it's never nice having to be constructive.
- 1:01:36You can obviously put it in a nice way.
- 1:01:38That's always something you can do that.
- 1:01:39I think a lot of people forget about, but how do you kind of
- 1:01:42voice that how You say, hey, I'm not really feeling this or, you
- 1:01:45know, I hate this. Like, how do you voice that to
- 1:01:48each other? I think exactly how you just
- 1:01:51said it. It's like so simple.
- 1:01:52Like, we're not, we're not going to get offended by what someone
- 1:01:55says. So, like we were doing something
- 1:01:57yesterday, John, put in this little, like, horn section.
- 1:02:00I'm like, I wasn't feeling it didn't say much.
- 1:02:02Maybe it'll add. When we add some other stuff, 20
- 1:02:04minutes later, it was like, John, I'm not feeling that horn
- 1:02:07section. I think, I think we got a bullet
- 1:02:09or change it do something and then it just like, yeah, you
- 1:02:12know what, you're right. And I In the day.
- 1:02:14Like I don't think we want to release any music where one of
- 1:02:16us isn't happy about it. So like if I if I bring in a
- 1:02:20riff and John's like I don't know how I feel about that.
- 1:02:22I'm not going to be like oh come on I really it's like maybe I'll
- 1:02:25use it in another project. Maybe I'll use it somewhere else
- 1:02:27but if you don't like it and we're not feeling the song
- 1:02:29together then we're not going to release the song such a
- 1:02:32refreshing attitude to have. I must say this brings back, a
- 1:02:35lot of memories for me. I mean I think when I first
- 1:02:38started being in a band, I was a bit of a hard case.
- 1:02:40I was like the leader. So I was really like getting on.
- 1:02:43Everyone's Case about things and I definitely know that I could
- 1:02:45have voice things better. But one thing I was proud of is
- 1:02:48that I always allowed everyone to just give it a try even if I
- 1:02:51didn't feel what they were doing, I was that.
- 1:02:53Well we should just try this idea and see how it sounds with
- 1:02:56what we're doing and stuff. But yeah, like the way you voice
- 1:03:01things, like what you just said there is the perfect way to
- 1:03:05voice that you say, hey, well, maybe we won't use it for this
- 1:03:07project. Maybe we use it for something
- 1:03:08else and just how you communicate these things because
- 1:03:12I think a lot of Some people forget how personal music is and
- 1:03:16like, because it's essentially like an expression of the Soul
- 1:03:19isn't in a way. It's like a creative kind of
- 1:03:23expression of yourself. So, if someone goes batshit,
- 1:03:26it's like your. There's always like they're
- 1:03:27saying your shit and even though, you know, that's not
- 1:03:30what they mean. It's how it feels.
- 1:03:33Yeah, I think it's like, Unwritten kind of what Mark was
- 1:03:36saying. It's like an Unwritten code
- 1:03:38between us that neither of us wants to put anything out that
- 1:03:40the other person's not stoked on.
- 1:03:42Yes. So if He doesn't totally love
- 1:03:44the song even a fit. Maybe, I've put 20 hours into
- 1:03:48mixing and recording this track and I send it to him.
- 1:03:51He's like, yeah, I don't really like that.
- 1:03:53Then I wouldn't put it out, it's going to be bad Maggiore, isn't
- 1:03:58it? You got to have like it's really
- 1:04:00three out of four. Love it.
- 1:04:01And one guy hates it. Take the majority that if it's
- 1:04:04like and we also have it. There's only be only have two so
- 1:04:07it's like what we do. And it's like so it's like hey
- 1:04:15if if we both don't like it then it's not going out.
- 1:04:18We change something right. Fair enough.
- 1:04:20Fair enough just very briefly. I want to mention one thing
- 1:04:25about the podcast but it's more to do with the music side of
- 1:04:28things. How has the podcast actually
- 1:04:30benefited your music in terms of promotion and networking and
- 1:04:33stuff? I know we've touched on this a
- 1:04:34little bit before but I just want to focus on your music
- 1:04:38specifically. Yeah, great question.
- 1:04:41I mean it's really early. It's too early to tell And right
- 1:04:44now, I have not even been watching if if our music is
- 1:04:49growing because we're so focused on what's next and what's up
- 1:04:51coming? And so maybe we'll start to see
- 1:04:54a kick in the way that we promote our new EP.
- 1:04:56I think we're still probably at least four or five months out.
- 1:04:59So we've got a long road ahead of us before we start releasing
- 1:05:02that. But I think just having it all
- 1:05:05interconnected makes sense from a future standpoint.
- 1:05:07So you know, if you like the podcast you like us, you kind of
- 1:05:11like our personalities. You go over to our Website,
- 1:05:14where we have all the podcast info, but our own musics also
- 1:05:17there as well. So, you're going to learn a
- 1:05:18little bit more about the band and maybe when you go on our
- 1:05:20YouTube channel and you watch our videos, there's also a
- 1:05:22separate playlist. That's got our own music videos,
- 1:05:25and maybe you're interested in that as well.
- 1:05:26If you're a fan, maybe you're not, it doesn't really matter.
- 1:05:29We, we get you in one area, then that's good enough for us.
- 1:05:33But I think it makes sense, like you said, streaming across as
- 1:05:37many different platforms as you can, whether it be podcast
- 1:05:40music, You Know, video, content or even.
- 1:05:43Being on all of the different platforms.
- 1:05:45Think it makes sense to just push that brand out there, I
- 1:05:48think? Yes as well.
- 1:05:49It's really cool as far as like just being content creators as
- 1:05:53well because that maybe being more kind of likeable on the
- 1:05:58wide in this well building. A following through that kind of
- 1:06:02almost encourages people to check out your music as a kind
- 1:06:05of like, oh, you guys do music as well, and it's like kind of
- 1:06:08doing any. There's that, that engine to its
- 1:06:10think I was, I was even saying that the other day that if Or
- 1:06:13someone that subscribes to the podcast and they like it,
- 1:06:16chances are, they're going to be like, oh, you know, I want to
- 1:06:20know who these guys are. Like, if I'm going to listen to
- 1:06:22them, you know, once every two Monday's, I'm going to figure
- 1:06:25out who they are and see and then you're going to be like,
- 1:06:27oh, they listen, they make their own music, they're probably
- 1:06:30gonna check it out, whether it's their style of music or were
- 1:06:32not, at least there's someone that knows about it and they
- 1:06:35watched it and, you know, so that's cool and its own.
- 1:06:38It's like I've had different people, say to me like all
- 1:06:40Christian, you know, you should put the podcast on a So now, you
- 1:06:44know, Channel, you should do this, you should do that.
- 1:06:46And I've always said, since the beginning of my channel that,
- 1:06:49you know, it's a variety channel, it's that's the
- 1:06:52purpose. That's what I see is the vision
- 1:06:54for it. Because from my perspective, I
- 1:06:56like this idea of you. Come on, you don't really know
- 1:06:59what to suspect like expects, very, is there going to be an
- 1:07:02original song? Is there going to be a cover
- 1:07:04song and acting video podcast episode?
- 1:07:06Like, you don't know? Like, I like that element to it.
- 1:07:09But yes, as we were just talking about, I like this kind of idea
- 1:07:12that if someone Really likes the podcast or really liked my
- 1:07:16acting videos and subscribe and follow stuff for that.
- 1:07:20Then they might check out the other stuff.
- 1:07:21And because I think that for example, like, you know, you
- 1:07:25guys aren't always going to be writing music, everyday, Jen.
- 1:07:28And, I mean, and it's the same with me.
- 1:07:29I'm not doing acting stuff 24/7. So, it's always like, what's
- 1:07:33happening in the moment and sometimes certain things, get
- 1:07:36neglected, a little bit certain time, you always come back to
- 1:07:39them, but like you're sort of focusing in the moment.
- 1:07:43On what's going on. So you kind of want your
- 1:07:45audience to kind of move with you with everything you do.
- 1:07:48And as you said before that kind of subscribe to That Brand Build
- 1:07:52That Brand and then people subscribe to that and they're
- 1:07:55not just focused on like oh hey why aren't you guys uploading
- 1:07:59covers or why? Haven't you done this or
- 1:08:01whatever? You know for sure, for sure.
- 1:08:03I mean, people don't remember what you say, they remember how
- 1:08:06you make them feel, and that's why, and that's what brands play
- 1:08:09on so hard. It's not really just about the
- 1:08:12content that you're looking at it.
- 1:08:13Experience that you get when you're watching it, so whether
- 1:08:16it's music, whether it's podcast content, acting whatever it is,
- 1:08:19you can have that all in the same brand, all in the same
- 1:08:22bucket. And if you've got a True
- 1:08:25Believer in someone who enjoys that experience and they enjoy,
- 1:08:27how you make them feel, they're sold their hooked and you've got
- 1:08:31a fan a real fan. It's like whenever hope one day,
- 1:08:36we want one real fan. I'm sure you have many fans
- 1:08:39already man. Yeah, we're not married.
- 1:08:51I was gonna say about Coca-Cola does that, you know, the brand,
- 1:08:57you know, I can't remember the last time they actually did an
- 1:09:00advert. We're like one of the people in
- 1:09:03the advert says, hey, would you like a Coca-Cola?
- 1:09:06Like, they might notice that hand, it symbolically, but has
- 1:09:09fuck all to do with the product. It's all pretty much about, you
- 1:09:13know, as you say, building the brand building the story
- 1:09:16building, something that people can subscribe to in some shape
- 1:09:19or form like I think that's what people always looking for.
- 1:09:22In general, is something relatable, something they can
- 1:09:26kind of something that makes them.
- 1:09:28As you said, that makes them feel something.
- 1:09:31That's what everybody wants. You just want to feel something
- 1:09:36that can go anywhere. Yeah, take it.
- 1:09:38How you want. I got such a daddy mind is like
- 1:09:48a lot of cops on our yeah. Oh, I keep everything in mind.
- 1:09:55No, tell me about your worst gigging experience the worst
- 1:10:02show ever or some some worst stories ever.
- 1:10:07You go first. Oh boy, you suffer first.
- 1:10:11I'm saving mine. Yeah.
- 1:10:12Well, okay, this wasn't the worst because it was cool, but
- 1:10:16it's along those lines and kind of just a funny /.
- 1:10:20If Trying to be digging a terrible experience we played.
- 1:10:24So after covid, her know during covid me and John were at home
- 1:10:27for, you know, a few months. And we, we were like, let's
- 1:10:31nail. So, with full backtracking
- 1:10:33because it was just us, we had all the drums, all the horns,
- 1:10:36all the background vocals and where we will need like, you
- 1:10:39know, maybe like a 1718 song, set list that we could play all
- 1:10:42covers, all great songs that we liked and middle of covid.
- 1:10:47So we can't have any guess we go up north.
- 1:10:49We have the The coolest set up on a dock on the lake.
- 1:10:53Set up all the gear PA everything, and we played
- 1:10:57probably an hour and a half, two hours straight to my mom, my
- 1:11:01dad, both of our girlfriends. And that's it.
- 1:11:04So it wasn't, it was but like, just something hilarious about
- 1:11:11hitting that last, note to like Beat It by Michael Jackson being
- 1:11:14like look at each other fart sweating pumped up and like two
- 1:11:19people Way to go, boys, like and very underwhelming dude.
- 1:11:26I've been there so many times like true story.
- 1:11:29My first bands like last show. Like this is like we knew we
- 1:11:35were broken that breaking up that day so we put everything
- 1:11:37into it. But fuck me man.
- 1:11:39It was literally my ex-girlfriend the sound engineer
- 1:11:43and I think that's it. And if we like this heavy metal
- 1:11:47band trying to get into it is glorified I'd band practice just
- 1:11:52yeah yeah and that's why I said it's not a terrible experience
- 1:11:57because we set it up on purpose knowing there wouldn't really
- 1:11:59like knowing it wasn't the show but kind of just a hilarious
- 1:12:03experience. Because yeah, but playing really
- 1:12:06hard getting into it for like four people.
- 1:12:10Good times. Good times, lots of fun.
- 1:12:13Yeah, it is similar experience during covid this year as well.
- 1:12:16Set up a live stream by one of the universities.
- 1:12:19They actually reached out to And said would you guys like to play
- 1:12:22on a live stream? We're going to do a concert for
- 1:12:23the students. I'm like fantastic.
- 1:12:24Yeah of course we'd love to they go.
- 1:12:27How much should we pay? You were like oh wow, we don't
- 1:12:30even need to get paid when I said do donation in our name to
- 1:12:33the the charity that we work with, right?
- 1:12:36So we Mark couldn't make it because he was in Dublin that
- 1:12:39night and I was like I'll play and it was late at night so you
- 1:12:42would have had to have got that 3 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. to play some.
- 1:12:45I'll play for you guys. No problem.
- 1:12:47I played a live stream for an hour in front of, for 'Well, I
- 1:12:53didn't do any of the promoting the school did it and he goes.
- 1:12:56Yeah, in retrospect. It was a pretty busy time for
- 1:12:58students. They a lot of them had midterms
- 1:13:00and exams. It's probably bad timing like,
- 1:13:03all right, very odd, especially nobody in front of you.
- 1:13:07Nothing you're just playing live music which I guess I do on my
- 1:13:10own anyways. But yeah, you know I think days
- 1:13:13this thing this unspoken thing that exists because like every
- 1:13:16single band ever when they start out it's always the same.
- 1:13:20Thing you end up playing either to other bands sound engineer,
- 1:13:24girlfriend's family, whatever like basically no one, right?
- 1:13:28Yeah. And I think it's this kind of I
- 1:13:31like to call it the no one gives a fuck about you concert where
- 1:13:35as soon as you get just like known a little bit it just flip
- 1:13:40reverses. So like a good example of this
- 1:13:42right? I remember seeing this clip
- 1:13:44which you can find online its Rage Against the Machines.
- 1:13:47First ever gig I implore everyone to go check.
- 1:13:50Get out. I may have seen it.
- 1:13:52It's yeah, it's then playing and they do have an audience to be
- 1:13:55fair, right? But they're playing it like a
- 1:13:57universe. He is their first time gigging
- 1:13:59and I shit you not. It's like any other show they
- 1:14:02ever play. It's just amazing.
- 1:14:05And there's legit. I mean there is an audience but
- 1:14:07there's like what probably ten people there or whatever.
- 1:14:10Most people just walking past, oh my fucking Rage Against the
- 1:14:14Machine and you're walking past and of course like no one knew
- 1:14:16who they were then. Right there were nobodies I get
- 1:14:18that but still the music was fantastic.
- 1:14:20Fantastic. And I put it down to this
- 1:14:22concept. It's not, it's not even about
- 1:14:25how good you are. You can be amazing.
- 1:14:28It doesn't matter until you are known.
- 1:14:32And people I saw like talking about you because your name
- 1:14:35keeps popping up places or they saw you on the TV or the saw you
- 1:14:38in this place. People will just walk by you.
- 1:14:41Can you can do amazing and the people won't care.
- 1:14:43It's only when something really unique.
- 1:14:45Like, I don't know. You see a ten-year-old singing
- 1:14:47on the street and he's got the voice of an angel or some shit.
- 1:14:49Maybe then you pay attention. Yeah, it's viral.
- 1:14:51But other than that it most of the time.
- 1:14:53Yeah. Being a band is a slug in the
- 1:14:55beginning and it's mostly like 23 years of being nobody and
- 1:14:59then maybe you make it And then there's those people that made
- 1:15:05it, but maybe aren't amazing. And then they have a man's who
- 1:15:09are signing up. Oh my God, I'm going to go see a
- 1:15:11concert with. So and so you don't even know
- 1:15:13who that person is. You haven't listened to any of
- 1:15:15their music, you're just hyped up because of the name, and
- 1:15:18they're not even that good. That happens to.
- 1:15:21That's the, what all it's, you know, I remember seeing you
- 1:15:24familiar with the metal band DragonForce I know for my, one
- 1:15:28of my buddies is from like I've just outside London, UK as well,
- 1:15:32like Adam, and he's a big fan. Yeah.
- 1:15:34Okay, not a huge, I don't know, but he's definitely showed me
- 1:15:36some of their stuff, okay, sorry to Adam.
- 1:15:38I'm going to shit on DragonForce now.
- 1:15:40Okay, so basically back in human nature.
- 1:15:44The in about 2007, this video game came out Guitar, Hero 3 and
- 1:15:50Ayah song was on it through the fire and the flames.
- 1:15:52And everyone was going nuts because it was like, yo, just
- 1:15:57breathe Fast Speedy solos. It.
- 1:15:59Sounded amazing, right? We will Blown Away.
- 1:16:01We were all like, you know, thirteen-year-old kids go.
- 1:16:03Oh my God, this is amazing, right?
- 1:16:06Yeah, this is Super Show in London.
- 1:16:07I grew up in London, right? And it had everyone had Machine
- 1:16:12Head, Trivium Shadows fool. Some other band, a comma B and
- 1:16:17DragonForce, they weren't headlining but they were just
- 1:16:20playing life as like the second or third bill.
- 1:16:24And we were all pumped because of the hyper the band, you know,
- 1:16:26we really didn't know what to expect.
- 1:16:27Expect they, come on stage. Now, I'm going to be fair,
- 1:16:31Herman. Li was exceptional the rest of
- 1:16:35it and utter trash. I don't understand what was
- 1:16:39going on there. Maybe they were having a bad
- 1:16:41day, I don't know, but they were awful and the crowd booed them,
- 1:16:46which is the first time I've ever seen that show ever.
- 1:16:48Because normally you just give a band the benefit of the doubt.
- 1:16:50But if it's a big band and you paid money to be there, I gotta
- 1:16:53get why people get angry right? And they were literally being
- 1:16:57booed off. The Stage and they were supposed
- 1:16:58to have like a 30-minute set. I think they left off the like
- 1:17:0115 minutes and it was the only time in my life, I've heard the
- 1:17:04singer and the band say you're the worst crowd we've ever
- 1:17:08played to we're leaving for Cuba and they walked off and we all
- 1:17:11cheered when they left and then. Yeah I think that trigger way
- 1:17:15more next and everyone lost their mind for sure.
- 1:17:17It's a perfect example of like I don't know how I mean, I don't
- 1:17:22want to say that that totally bags.
- 1:17:23I don't denounce really true, but I think that like you do
- 1:17:26need to be on top of your game, you know?
- 1:17:28Yeah. If you and the high may need the
- 1:17:30performance. Yeah, I mean, I mean, let's give
- 1:17:33him a fair example. That there are a lot of Pop
- 1:17:35musicians out there who. Yeah?
- 1:17:38You know, everyone says is amazing, but when you hear them
- 1:17:40live their Out Of Tune, And I think that that is just
- 1:17:45unacceptable, they don't have to be the most amazing singer of
- 1:17:50all time, but they need to be in tune.
- 1:17:51They need to be sounding how they are.
- 1:17:53These sounds on the records because otherwise, it's like
- 1:17:56false advertisements like Miss. Yeah, I think that's a talent in
- 1:18:00itself is being able to, like reproduce the music that you put
- 1:18:03on. And to me, I would never want to
- 1:18:05put out a record where you couldn't reproduce it to an
- 1:18:08acceptable quality and then maybe you're just not a touring
- 1:18:12band. You can't do that.
- 1:18:13Like you shouldn't be having people pay for money to come
- 1:18:16watch you live. If you cannot perform your
- 1:18:19music, I just think that's kind of nonsensical, in a way.
- 1:18:21Like, I completely agree with you, but I do feel that, like,
- 1:18:27maybe this only applies to like, musicians that and forgive me
- 1:18:30for this, but like, don't using the instruments, like just do
- 1:18:33everything by computer, because I feel like bands, you know,
- 1:18:36like you do play the songs together, you write the songs
- 1:18:40together, you learn the songs and then when you Go to the
- 1:18:43studio, it's essentially just the best representation of that.
- 1:18:47But like, for example, when I did my first metal record, there
- 1:18:53are some songs that had like, very high vocal notes in it and
- 1:18:56obviously they sound very polished on the record, right?
- 1:18:59But I could hit those notes and I put a lot of time and effort
- 1:19:02into hitting them and there's videos online of me doing it.
- 1:19:05And I was always proud of that and I took a lot of pride in
- 1:19:09that and I always worked on it to try and make it as good as I
- 1:19:11possibly could. But in my And I thought I can't
- 1:19:14put out a record where I can't sing like that, that's just
- 1:19:18false that that's like people just going to come see us.
- 1:19:22And at a point where you're trying to build yourself, if
- 1:19:24people come and see you in the go on, but doesn't sound like
- 1:19:26what was on the record? Like what's going on there?
- 1:19:28Like I don't know, there's just a lot to me that I did thing is
- 1:19:32though, everybody has a number so if Warner Brothers music
- 1:19:37comes to you and they're like, Christian working to give you 50
- 1:19:40million dollars. You're not even going to sing on
- 1:19:43the album. You're basically going to be
- 1:19:45Britney Spears, you're going to have no Talent whatsoever and
- 1:19:48we're going to fake the entire thing and you're going to be a
- 1:19:50sensational Superstar. There's a number where most
- 1:19:54people will will budge. I thought you might be like
- 1:19:57myself. I'm, I probably would rather
- 1:19:59take my own life, then deal with that.
- 1:20:01I will turn it down because no, but yes, for the for two
- 1:20:04reasons, right. And I know people will be like
- 1:20:06our bullshit. Come on, man, everyone's got a
- 1:20:08number, like, but you got to look at it like this, like,
- 1:20:11you're essentially selling. Soul 100% like you.
- 1:20:14Look at how fucked Britney Spears is right now.
- 1:20:16Like her situation like they had me under strict owns her which
- 1:20:21is crazy to think about. But like, and this is why I've
- 1:20:24spoken to other musicians about this on the podcast before.
- 1:20:27Why, you know, I think it's just not worth signing with major
- 1:20:32labels anymore. Like, it's much better to be an
- 1:20:34independent musician and get like a distribution deal for
- 1:20:37your stuff. Because if you go for a record
- 1:20:40label, that what you're forgetting?
- 1:20:41Is there a Business and they want to make money off of you.
- 1:20:45They're not trying to make meet you money.
- 1:20:46They're trying to make money off of you, and they will give you a
- 1:20:48deal where they make the most of the money, which you're writing
- 1:20:51the songs, you're writing the music.
- 1:20:53Like, okay. You gave the example of a
- 1:20:55situation where they give you a big amount, and yeah, you don't
- 1:20:58have any involvement in the situation, but like in that
- 1:21:02scenario, they own you and you have to do everything they say
- 1:21:06and you're not going to get to enjoy that money.
- 1:21:08You probably have to spend it. Just, I don't know, whatever
- 1:21:11like power. Be self-maintenance.
- 1:21:14Keeping yourself. Look in the way that you look
- 1:21:17for however, long. The contract is, I don't know,
- 1:21:19like it, it's not going to be all sunshine and daisies, you
- 1:21:23know, it's going to be hard work.
- 1:21:25And then when you come out of that contract, you've got
- 1:21:28nothing to show for it by you, don't own your music, and I feel
- 1:21:32like music, especially these days is so much more respected.
- 1:21:37When the musician has actually written their work, that's not
- 1:21:39to say that I'm holding anything against like Musicians, that
- 1:21:43don't write their own work. I think that it's it's a
- 1:21:46combination of factors. It's the talent of the singer,
- 1:21:49how they work on their craft and then the music itself.
- 1:21:52It's all different elements of a big puzzle, but I do think that
- 1:21:57you do, you tend to always Revere those musicians that
- 1:22:00write their own work, like they're the ones that tend to be
- 1:22:03remembered more and revered more because it just of how I
- 1:22:09suppose, you know, the songwriting thing is, you know,
- 1:22:12for People It comes naturally, the other people, it's not so
- 1:22:15easy. And I think that's probably
- 1:22:16where the element of like, you know, their admiration maybe
- 1:22:20comes from. Yeah.
- 1:22:22And I think you connect with those people more to like when
- 1:22:25it's when this is your work, this is your story like every
- 1:22:28song. I'm a big believer myself like
- 1:22:31first round through listening to a song.
- 1:22:33I just kind of like sit and think about it.
- 1:22:35Like listen to a couple instruments but just think about
- 1:22:37how that makes me feel. Where would I want to be
- 1:22:39listening to this song and when I know Know that they wrote it
- 1:22:43themselves. It's their music.
- 1:22:45This is what they wanted to release, that's just awesome
- 1:22:47because I'm looking at them for that inspiration rather than
- 1:22:51this is a beautiful song. But like you don't mean really
- 1:22:54anything to me because you're just singing it or some and you
- 1:22:57know I applaud you on a fantastic voice but that's
- 1:23:00that's just like you said, that's one part of it.
- 1:23:02And to me, the music is way more than just having a great voice.
- 1:23:07Totally couldn't agree more and one of the things that you
- 1:23:10mentioned there was Inspirations, which leads me on
- 1:23:12to my next question. Who are your musical
- 1:23:15inspirations? Oh boy.
- 1:23:19So many we list this. So many different types of music
- 1:23:22for me. That's the right answer.
- 1:23:24Yeah, if I had to pick two artists, you may not have even
- 1:23:31heard of either of them. 1 John, Butler Trio.
- 1:23:34Yes. On mazing battle our player.
- 1:23:38So talented, so skilled sounds exactly like the record I went
- 1:23:42and saw him live last year. He sounds perfect and It
- 1:23:47incredibly skilled, probably one of the best guitar players in
- 1:23:50the world. So I'm yeah, huge John Butler
- 1:23:52Trio fan. And then number two would be
- 1:23:55kind of a newer guy shaky Graves you heard of him and I didn't
- 1:23:59gotta check them out. So yeah, really pounded.
- 1:24:02How do you spell that like my hand is she has H Cohn ke and
- 1:24:07then Graves as it sounds gra VES.
- 1:24:11So yeah, he's from Austin. Texas or Houston Texas.
- 1:24:14I believe I got to say I've had musicians.
- 1:24:17The show since we're up here. But I've had so many musicians
- 1:24:20on my show from Texas. There's something about Texas
- 1:24:25and music and culture like seriously will they love their
- 1:24:29music? And there's probably what like
- 1:24:3180 million people in Texas. We've got a good shot and now
- 1:24:35but no, he yeah, that would have been one of mine and I don't
- 1:24:38think this is inspiration for like where do we try and base
- 1:24:41our music off but it's inspiration as like a whole like
- 1:24:44our music doesn't sound anything.
- 1:24:45Like there's but it's Of just like them as a person and how
- 1:24:49true they are about their music and how passionate they are
- 1:24:52about and how they have their style and they just go with it
- 1:24:55and they absolutely love it. Shake your Graves was one of the
- 1:24:58most incredible people I've ever seen live.
- 1:25:01He does he's banned banned. Music is fantastic, but he does
- 1:25:04lots of songs with, he does dual Kick Drum and like a tambourine
- 1:25:09with his feet while playing guitar and Isabel unbelievable
- 1:25:14into a one-man band. So good.
- 1:25:17And so you see these YouTube videos and it's like, oh my God,
- 1:25:20this is unbelievable. Like he does audio tree live and
- 1:25:23it's some of the coolest performances I've seen.
- 1:25:26And then I saw in Dublin. My girlfriend was like knows I'm
- 1:25:30a huge fan. He came to Dublin.
- 1:25:31It was like 120 euros and I was like, I can't do that.
- 1:25:35That's I can't afford that I'm a student.
- 1:25:37So dumpling is as expensive as it is like.
- 1:25:41So yeah, I'm just I'm struggling and but so we Ryan.
- 1:25:47Their flight 15 euros and a 15 to go.
- 1:25:50See shaky Graves and the 30 Euro Airbnb for the night in
- 1:25:53Brussels. So, one night, for what I mean
- 1:25:58maybe was I $55 65 Euros and so I was like, all right, you know
- 1:26:02what? That's doable and I can see
- 1:26:04Brussels, and it was 25 people in this bar and in Texas, You'll
- 1:26:08Play to like, you know, 70,000 people, 82, call my God.
- 1:26:12That's the best kind of showed. Nobody knew, like only the 25
- 1:26:16people knew. He was and know what obviously,
- 1:26:18because it was incredible. What gets me?
- 1:26:21Mm, oh yeah, we were talking with him, drinking some pints
- 1:26:24with him, it was believable. And by far, I was like, that's
- 1:26:28the coolest musical experience I've ever had in my life.
- 1:26:32Fuck, yeah, huge inspiration on him.
- 1:26:35He just everything about him. And, like I said, not the music,
- 1:26:37but just everything about what he does for music and how he
- 1:26:41approaches music and writing music, and as bad as like, that
- 1:26:44is an inspiration. Check them out.
- 1:26:47Yeah, you caught. Well, I will fight to me for me.
- 1:26:49Music is a gift. Like I know that sounds so
- 1:26:51cringy. But what I mean by that is like
- 1:26:53whenever because I got open mind that you guys, and my music
- 1:26:57interests. And what I listen to is
- 1:27:00literally everything all different genres, but as far as
- 1:27:03like inspiring my playing style and my songwriting yeah it comes
- 1:27:06down to the same factors you know like the way a person
- 1:27:09thinks the way they approach it like whatever.
- 1:27:12But really quick just to mention two of I believe shaky Graves
- 1:27:18traded to start his career as an actor as well.
- 1:27:21So you right, you might really connect with them on that level.
- 1:27:23I think he was doing acting and Broadway and he was really
- 1:27:26trying to get it. And he tells this crazy story
- 1:27:29about how he busted out a his guitar at like a campfire and it
- 1:27:33was just like this musical experience and journey and that
- 1:27:36was like, what really got him more down?
- 1:27:38The track of like pursuing music as a career rather than acting
- 1:27:41really? Really cool interesting guy.
- 1:27:44imagine you probably had a lot of adoring women looking at him
- 1:27:47at the campfire going and he was like this hundred into this you
- 1:27:51know I play and the woman come for said The power.
- 1:28:05Oh my God. Okay.
- 1:28:07Okay. Back to miss my we're in it.
- 1:28:11Tell me about your best gigging experiences.
- 1:28:17Oh, okay. Well I'll tell quick when you
- 1:28:19give one unfortunately, mine would well, Kate, we've had some
- 1:28:23awesome experiences together, but I'm going to tell one
- 1:28:26before, with my previous video, bathroom break to see you told
- 1:28:29us, we'll be right back. Perfect.
- 1:28:31So with my previous band, we had this, like, unique scenario.
- 1:28:35We're at our University, there was this kind of, like, Lodge
- 1:28:39and it's a city, but it was like this Lodge, all wooden cabin and
- 1:28:44for about 10 years, it's been given to It's who love music who
- 1:28:48are passionate about the Arts and those people, like you kind
- 1:28:52of like interview to get a spot at living in this house and
- 1:28:56total like open roof, like double floors with all these
- 1:29:00wooden beams and then massive stage and we throw concerts in
- 1:29:03there and all the money's like raised for charity, donated back
- 1:29:06to the community. And so when I like kind of learn
- 1:29:10guitar and like third year, I was kind of hanging out with
- 1:29:14this new friend who's now my best friend and he He was the
- 1:29:17singer songwriter and then it kind of all collaborated in
- 1:29:20fourth year with like drummer violinist.
- 1:29:22And we had the final show after my graduation at this concert.
- 1:29:28And then, so, my buddy lived there, which essentially was
- 1:29:30like, I lived there and we have this, this concert, and it was
- 1:29:34unbelievable. Like, it was like the first,
- 1:29:36like, wow. I feel like a rockstar, like
- 1:29:38everyone is pumped. None of us are wearing shirts.
- 1:29:41There's like, hey, jammed into this Lodge and I think the
- 1:29:46music. Music went really well liked and
- 1:29:48everyone was just so excited and so happy.
- 1:29:51So by far that was just like the coolest musical experience.
- 1:29:54I've had personally sounds awesome days.
- 1:29:57And yeah, someone show Ivan everywhere is like, yeah, that's
- 1:30:00a good time that exactly. Yeah, for me it was our last
- 1:30:06charity concert, the concert for the blind that we did.
- 1:30:09It was just an all-around, great show.
- 1:30:11We learned some lessons along the way on how much we need to
- 1:30:13set up what we need like how you structured the whole show?
- 1:30:16Joe needs to be, we had someone, you know, we had our engineer
- 1:30:20there. Who is really, really talented.
- 1:30:21So just sounded really good. It was one of the first times
- 1:30:24where I was really happy with the sound.
- 1:30:26We were getting sounded really good in the room too and I
- 1:30:29remember playing one of our funny or so I remember playing
- 1:30:32play that funky music. White boy.
- 1:30:34Yeah we wanted to we love proud of its right.
- 1:30:38Look what our crowd is all different ages.
- 1:30:39So it's just, you know, people sons of people like.
- 1:30:42So we really don't like songs that like, I feel like that if
- 1:30:44you play the classics These like everyone loves that.
- 1:30:48Surely exactly. Yeah, we did a funk set that
- 1:30:50night and yes the whole buncha Punk's, so much fun, so much
- 1:30:54fun. I remember singing that song and
- 1:30:56again you get lost when you're playing and singing and I'm
- 1:30:58always trying to remember the words and I remember singing it
- 1:31:00and looking up and just seeing like a hundred people really
- 1:31:04dancing and just singing along with me.
- 1:31:07And I'm like, this is what it must feel like.
- 1:31:09Yeah. And shouting Play That Funky
- 1:31:11Music. Yeah, that's like the recall
- 1:31:13it's like, damn, this feels so good to have the room.
- 1:31:16I'm just loving what you're doing and it was a you know, you
- 1:31:20just chase that feeling forever. It just I want that bigger how
- 1:31:24how incredible would it feel for somebody as a musician to play a
- 1:31:28stadium and have 30,000 people singing your song?
- 1:31:33I think it's especially cool. When you think about like where
- 1:31:36you wrote the song? Yeah.
- 1:31:38You often hear stories about like musicians?
- 1:31:40Like I don't know, Ed Sheeran. I'm talking about like oh yeah,
- 1:31:42you know I was paying wimbley to like hundred thousand people and
- 1:31:45I wrote this song in my bed I'm about some girl.
- 1:31:48I loved. Yeah, blah blah blah, and it's
- 1:31:50like, it must be crazy. Like I'm sure he's probably had
- 1:31:52moments where he's on that stage going like, fuck, man.
- 1:31:55I bet they all have anyone who's had that experience.
- 1:31:59Like, I don't think we can comprehend know what it feels
- 1:32:02like no, no chance. Maybe one day, maybe one day.
- 1:32:06If it ever happens, then then you'll have that chance to be
- 1:32:09like yeah this is what I was talking about back in 2020 and
- 1:32:12it's way cooler than I could have imagined.
- 1:32:15Yeah, I'm going to move the The conversation over to just like
- 1:32:18random questions. So love it don't.
- 1:32:21Don't be, don't be scared, it's all just random.
- 1:32:24But we've met we've mentioned quite a few times, Dublin,
- 1:32:27Dublin, Ireland. And I just wanted to ask you
- 1:32:30this because I've been to die Dublin and it's a great place.
- 1:32:33I encourage everyone after covid to go there.
- 1:32:36It's very it's very I think it's just a good European city.
- 1:32:41Good people, good alcohol, Good, Good Times.
- 1:32:44The Irish of fun, read And but there's some weird shit there as
- 1:32:48well. And I remember, oh boy, the
- 1:32:52National History Museum in Dublin, have you been there?
- 1:32:56Yeah, I don't know if this, it's if it's like a smaller building
- 1:33:00or if it's like just one building, but I walked in and it
- 1:33:04was all like Taxidermy like just discuss stuffed animals.
- 1:33:10It was like, everywhere you look was stuffed animals, which is
- 1:33:15amazing like really. He fucking weird it like in the
- 1:33:19window like you can see like kind of in the basement from the
- 1:33:22street and there's like a stuffed leopard or something and
- 1:33:25it's like oh that's that's weird.
- 1:33:27That's Unique. It's just gonna like because
- 1:33:30I've seen this everywhere like I've been in houses in Europe
- 1:33:32where like people have about these old Century like mansions
- 1:33:36and they got like a fucking Deers Head on the wall or
- 1:33:38something and it always freaks me out.
- 1:33:40I don't care like I know people are used to in stuff but I get
- 1:33:42freaked out. It's it's a dead animal and we
- 1:33:45hang it on our walls. That look in species where we
- 1:33:50are, but I just wondered if you'd been there because I
- 1:33:53always thought that, as a bit of a little gem in in Ireland, like
- 1:33:56yeah. Yeah.
- 1:33:57I mean, I've been there for almost five years now.
- 1:34:00So I've certainly experienced most of Dublin and I have been
- 1:34:03there. I've seen what that maybe
- 1:34:05firsthand? What do you think about the
- 1:34:06good? The good and the bad parts about
- 1:34:08Dublin? Oh yeah.
- 1:34:10It like I've enjoyed it. I'm almost done.
- 1:34:13I'm finishing up my schooling in like, four months and I'm Gonna
- 1:34:17Be Sad to leave. Like the, I think one of the
- 1:34:19coolest Parts is how like when you said, how nice people are
- 1:34:22but how social everyone is? Like I love the bar scene mainly
- 1:34:26because the music is incredible. Like any Pub you go into there's
- 1:34:31these phenomenal musicians and I found some incredible guys that
- 1:34:35I kind of follow on like a local basis and I'm going to really
- 1:34:38miss like not seeing those people play because and you
- 1:34:43probably can't find her mind. Like I think that's just where
- 1:34:45they are. And that's what Do so yeah, I
- 1:34:48know what you mean. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:34:50Like maybe go back and 10 years and hope that they're probably
- 1:34:53still there and just reconnect with that.
- 1:34:56So like that's something I'm gonna miss and then on the same,
- 1:34:59same side of the other side of the coin, the bars.
- 1:35:03And the partying is just like extreme sometimes and you see
- 1:35:06some like ultimate lows of Dublin and for the, okay?
- 1:35:12So I'll tell a story and it's pretty terrible.
- 1:35:14But we're walking down this bar and then it was like, oh, Let's
- 1:35:16let's go to this other one where this is guy playing.
- 1:35:18Like I pretty much Focus all of the bars and pubs around music
- 1:35:22so it's like, I know this guy's planet nine.
- 1:35:24Let's go check it out. Oh well, cut down this alley and
- 1:35:27there's just this guy leaning against the wall, taking a shit
- 1:35:30in the alley. And it's like, oh boy.
- 1:35:33Okay. And me and it's like he doesn't
- 1:35:36say anything. He looks up kind of gives you
- 1:35:38like the nod. I don't know what the knot is
- 1:35:40but you can't. You just like, give him the nod
- 1:35:43Back Carry On Through. And by no means, like, I don't
- 1:35:48think that this individual was homeless.
- 1:35:51I think it was just, like, I gotta go Iraq.
- 1:35:53Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:35:54Like brecht rather do it there than in like they're either
- 1:35:57stalls and tablet are disgusting.
- 1:36:00Yeah, not gonna do this like an actual disease or die if I just
- 1:36:04shit. Yeah.
- 1:36:04Compared to go into the local toilet.
- 1:36:06Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:36:07Oh God. So lots of those kinds of
- 1:36:09stories and I don't know, it's not bad, more more, more comedy
- 1:36:13for me, but I could certainly do without seeing that.
- 1:36:16I Loved the school. You could wear that if it's the
- 1:36:18smallest bar in the world but supposedly the smallest bar in
- 1:36:21the world. I was blown away by that.
- 1:36:24You did, you just walk down the stairs.
- 1:36:26There is a legitimately a bar and like, three seats or maybe a
- 1:36:30bit more than that and then you walk in the bathroom and then
- 1:36:33that's it. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:36:35The in the washroom of that bar, the roof is on a huge angle and
- 1:36:40it's padded with a gross mattress because it's so short
- 1:36:44that people just smash their heads off the roof standing up.
- 1:36:46Um, the toilet crazy. Wow, I don't actually fit in
- 1:36:49that bar. Yeah, like I'm like 62 and like
- 1:36:53I don't fit it, I don't fit in that bar.
- 1:36:55I was hunched over the entire time.
- 1:36:57It's kind of like drink your Pine and get out.
- 1:36:59So you did it. Yeah.
- 1:37:01But no overall like I absolutely love Dublin so it's such a cool
- 1:37:05place. Christian.
- 1:37:06Have you been to Canada? No, I would love to go.
- 1:37:10I would do. Would you go Well, Toronto, for
- 1:37:17sure, probably Montreal Quebec, let me find go there up, I know,
- 1:37:24because I'm in, mainly thinking, I'm a big wrestling professional
- 1:37:27wrestling fan. So I mainly think about like
- 1:37:29what I've become familiar with that probably in Niagara Falls
- 1:37:33is in Canada, isn't it? Yep like two hours away from
- 1:37:36Toronto? Yeah, I mean I think it's weird
- 1:37:40for me like I feel that one day I'm going to end up in Canada.
- 1:37:42Or because, you know, like sometimes had the universe kind
- 1:37:45of like, just froze, you signs, every night I get, I feel like
- 1:37:49the universe is trying to say like, hey you're going to go to
- 1:37:50Canada and I'm like but how yeah, like I'm gonna go with
- 1:37:56that but like how is that going to happen?
- 1:37:57And it's like ha ha. Just you wait and see buddy but
- 1:38:02he didn't run with that. My brothers.
- 1:38:04Yeah, we're bringing you. We're going to tip you.
- 1:38:07I like about and this is really a little bit controversial.
- 1:38:09But what I like about Canada is it's kind of like, It's
- 1:38:13obviously it's got his own culture that is very unique to
- 1:38:16specific to Canada, right? But it's also got like many
- 1:38:19elements of like American culture as well and it is kind
- 1:38:23of like a blend of like America in England and then its own
- 1:38:27thing. Yeah, 100%.
- 1:38:29And I like, because I'm I grew up like most kids around the
- 1:38:33world, you know, wanting to live in America and as an adult, you
- 1:38:36know, I've been there and I loved it, but I was like, okay I
- 1:38:40don't think I'll be living here or if I do.
- 1:38:42Do it will be very short-lived. And now especially with
- 1:38:46everything that's happened in the last couple of years and
- 1:38:49stuff. I've I just kind of concluded
- 1:38:50that it's it's not really like I want to kind of I don't think
- 1:38:55you can ever be truly 100% safe. Anywhere you go in the world but
- 1:38:58like there are places that are safer than others and I think
- 1:39:02like the idea that you know like everyone there owns a gun and
- 1:39:06that you can just shit can happen at any point is just it
- 1:39:09just kind of blows my mind because obviously I'm not Saying
- 1:39:13that in the UK there aren't guns because there are but obviously
- 1:39:16you can kind of go to bed safe in the knowledge that like if
- 1:39:19you walk down the street you're not just going to randomly get
- 1:39:22shot. You know for know you don't I
- 1:39:24mean I he's not really going to happen like it could but it's
- 1:39:27not going to happen. Whereas in America that's like
- 1:39:30It could happen at any moment for no reason, you know reason.
- 1:39:35Yeah, yeah. And I don't know that there's a
- 1:39:40certain Allure about Canada. Like I've I've heard a lot of
- 1:39:43good things as far as like it being having like a good like a
- 1:39:49high quality standard of living. So there's obviously that I seem
- 1:39:55to recall there was like a couple of years ago, there was
- 1:39:57like an article about a particular place in Canada where
- 1:39:59they were actually Trying to get people to come there and they
- 1:40:01would pay you to come and move that.
- 1:40:06Yeah, yeah. Maybe maybe.
- 1:40:09I'm pretty sure the entire province of Alberta.
- 1:40:12I could be wrong. So don't quote me on this but
- 1:40:13I'm pretty sure they will pay you to come and live.
- 1:40:15There there's so much vast space and they need people working and
- 1:40:20like in order for the economy to work.
- 1:40:23So I don't know if they'll pay you or they just give you some
- 1:40:25really big incentives, like you pay a lot less tax you know your
- 1:40:29money. A lot further, you're kind of in
- 1:40:31the middle of nowhere, but it's, it is beautiful to, you can get
- 1:40:34right near the mountains. Like Calgary is.
- 1:40:36Idiot is beautiful, how agree? There's one, yeah, cowgirl
- 1:40:40better. Can't ya Bret Hart country?
- 1:40:41Yeah, of course, yeah. Yeah, yeah, it's beautiful too.
- 1:40:45But there's your sign, maybe, maybe that's why I'm open to.
- 1:40:48I mean, I'm currently sort of back in the UK after being
- 1:40:51abroad for three years. So, I'm very much in, like, I
- 1:40:54want to be home mode. Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 1:40:57But but like, yeah, I'm open to it.
- 1:40:59I mean, it's like all things, I think probably what will happen
- 1:41:03is I'll meet like a Canadian girl or something and then it'd
- 1:41:07be like, hey should we get married and moved to Canada and
- 1:41:09I be like, why the fuck not do it?
- 1:41:14Who knows? Who knows?
- 1:41:16But anyways, moving it forward any in Dublin.
- 1:41:22Yeah. Come check it out.
- 1:41:24It's pretty. It's pretty International where
- 1:41:25I'm actually in Manchester. Yeah, that's it.
- 1:41:27It's kind of blown my mind actually because I obviously you
- 1:41:30know, it's a uni Town University town.
- 1:41:33So there's always going to be International kind of vibe, but
- 1:41:35there's a lot of people that just live here, just live here.
- 1:41:38Yep, different countries. And that's really cool to me
- 1:41:41like, even though I grew up in London office, it's massively
- 1:41:44Multicultural there. Like I never really kind of got
- 1:41:47that Vibe, as much or later. At least.
- 1:41:50I don't know. It wasn't.
- 1:41:51It didn't seem as prevalent. I feel like in smaller places.
- 1:41:54It's like even more prevalent though, maybe it's to do with
- 1:41:57like culture, obviously with Manchester, it's more well known
- 1:42:00for, like it's our and it's music and everything and that's
- 1:42:04kind of more I'm Into, You know, how it is.
- 1:42:05If you're in that sphere, you kind of attract that particular
- 1:42:09types of people, so that's mainly what I look out for.
- 1:42:13So I'm very open as far as the future is concerned.
- 1:42:16I kind of just ride the wave and just see what happens really the
- 1:42:20best way to be. What do you guys like to do for
- 1:42:24fun outside of music and podcasting?
- 1:42:28Oh boy. Oh, I got ya.
- 1:42:31Last milk weed every day. Don't you?
- 1:42:33It's legal in Canada, isn't it? Yeah.
- 1:42:36Yeah. For federally legal crazy.
- 1:42:39Oh God. We do a lot of stuff.
- 1:42:40I think know. Like number one would be like
- 1:42:42any sort of sport. Okay.
- 1:42:45You burned a sport so we play a lot of golf.
- 1:42:47That's all floud expect you to say that?
- 1:42:49Yeah. Yeah, I mean, well, we were both
- 1:42:51like, really like ice hockey football, like American football
- 1:42:55and Lacrosse. Is that a Canadian thing as
- 1:42:57well? Yeah.
- 1:42:58Fair. Yeah, but you get older and less
- 1:43:00like I don't want to kill myself anymore.
- 1:43:02Nor are there leagues that are like you can buy pick up ice
- 1:43:05hockey and stuff like that. But yeah.
- 1:43:08Yeah, you know, golf's one that we both love golf.
- 1:43:11We live really close to one. We're fortunate enough to be
- 1:43:13able to go play it. So and it's like two hours,
- 1:43:16beautiful land, beautiful weather and you can be
- 1:43:19competitive with yourself, like, it's so it's kind of keep that
- 1:43:22competitive I would lit. Golf definitely also other
- 1:43:27Hobbies just Even you know, we're fortunate enough to have a
- 1:43:31family Cottage not too far away from where we live on the lake
- 1:43:34so we've grown up water skiing wakeboarding you know see doing
- 1:43:39like water sports are here for us surfing our cousins live out
- 1:43:44west on the west coast of Canada and there's a surfing Town up
- 1:43:47there where we get to go and do some cold water surfing.
- 1:43:50So anything that gets you active and gonna see doors we're not
- 1:43:55like Gamers or anything. We don't Don't really sit inside
- 1:43:59unless we're doing podcasting or music.
- 1:44:02Otherwise we're outside doing something fun.
- 1:44:04I need to move to Canada, man. Fuck.
- 1:44:05Now sounds fun. It really does drinking.
- 1:44:12I mean if you drink enough in anything spawn.
- 1:44:14Yeah, I beg to differ my friends.
- 1:44:19Some things. I think it doesn't matter how
- 1:44:20drunk you guys did. Still not fun, you're not run.
- 1:44:24What do you guys do for a living?
- 1:44:25Well, what's your what's your day?
- 1:44:26Jobs, if you don't mind. Talking about it.
- 1:44:28Yeah, go ahead John Lennon. No no problem.
- 1:44:30I work in. I work in Brands so which is
- 1:44:34kind of what we were talking about it, but I'm not
- 1:44:37advertising more. So like brand management and
- 1:44:40product development. Okay?
- 1:44:41Yeah. So once a the company that I
- 1:44:43work for because I'm not too sure, how sure they are.
- 1:44:45But it's one, it's the one of the largest brands in Canada.
- 1:44:49And I, I've only been doing that for about a year.
- 1:44:52Now, before then it was, I was strictly Finance, I worked in
- 1:44:56the financial industry for six or seven years.
- 1:44:58After University before and going back to school to do my
- 1:45:01MBA, what was your undergraduate in economics?
- 1:45:06Okay, yeah. See kind of how I went econ,
- 1:45:09went finance, and then did an MBA and my thinking was I'll do
- 1:45:12an MBA and I'll kind of get deeper into the finance world
- 1:45:15and then my MBA actually majored in sustainability.
- 1:45:18And the more I started learning about that I started realizing
- 1:45:21you know there's way more at play with products and actual
- 1:45:25physical items that were putting into the environment and Think I
- 1:45:28have a really unique perspective on how to do that sustainably
- 1:45:31naturally but also still get people involved.
- 1:45:35And I wanted to be at the Forefront of that movement where
- 1:45:37I don't know what it's like in the UK now but in Canada it's
- 1:45:39pretty much every major company, you know, McDonald's and W.
- 1:45:43All of our, they're all advertising, sustainability,
- 1:45:47sustainably, sourced beef, whatever it is, you know,
- 1:45:50natural this. That's a huge movement here.
- 1:45:53Canada actually just banned single-use Plastics.
- 1:45:55In the next four years, we have to have all single-use.
- 1:45:58Plastics eliminated. So I thought this is a exciting
- 1:46:01industry and it's something I'm kind of interested in so I
- 1:46:03jumped ahead and do that. Yeah yeah yeah really good
- 1:46:07timing that's why I made the switch.
- 1:46:08I could have been real cozy in the finance industry right now
- 1:46:11if I wanted to yeah, I thought I'd make the switch and do
- 1:46:14something different. So damn enjoying it and then
- 1:46:16I'll let Marco Yep. Right on as of now.
- 1:46:21No career. I'm in my life.
- 1:46:25Yeah, I'm in my final year of medical school.
- 1:46:27So, wow cool. Yeah.
- 1:46:29So finishing that up in like, April and then hopefully, I'm
- 1:46:34do, I'm doing a bunch of interviews right now.
- 1:46:36Like I'm in the midst of this whole game of like trying to
- 1:46:38find the residency position after.
- 1:46:40So hopefully going back and doing for years of training in
- 1:46:44the states that it was so packed.
- 1:46:47Hard living in the States but they're like, in terms of the
- 1:46:50medical industry, like it's just top-notch like there.
- 1:46:53It's incredible. You know, you're going to just
- 1:46:56gain training that you might not get and there's just more
- 1:46:58opportunities. So hopefully do my four years of
- 1:47:00training in the state's become, I'm working towards becoming a
- 1:47:05surgeon and going from there, then hopefully make my back Don
- 1:47:08tario. So bit of a longer Road.
- 1:47:11Cool, cool. Yeah.
- 1:47:13Well, best of luck that is. Yeah, both of you guys, awesome.
- 1:47:17Cheers. Mmm.
- 1:47:18Good, take it down, two down, two up to, to a more serious
- 1:47:23tone. I want to ask you kind of like
- 1:47:26how covid has affected you at your lives.
- 1:47:28Obviously, it's affected us all, but I'm always kind of
- 1:47:31intrigued, as to how my guests are adapting to these things.
- 1:47:34And just yeah, just generally getting by, I think we're both
- 1:47:38pretty similar in the sense that we We don't necessarily live in
- 1:47:44fear and we don't suffer from any anxiety or anything like
- 1:47:49that, but I think it's we get the medical system.
- 1:47:53Like our parents are both medical professionals as well
- 1:47:56and so it's trust the system and everything that we've been doing
- 1:47:59is just, let's just follow the rules.
- 1:48:01I don't want to be that one idiot who does something wrong
- 1:48:04and spreads it to all my friends and family.
- 1:48:06So we've been pretty strict in the sense that we've locked down
- 1:48:09pretty tight, as we're As to we've followed all the rules.
- 1:48:12You know for me basically life means working at home.
- 1:48:15I barely leave my home unless it's to go get groceries and
- 1:48:19that's just the way it is, you know, we'll get on Zoom calls,
- 1:48:21we'll do our podcasts now that marks home from Ireland, we kind
- 1:48:25of merged households between myself and my parents and Mark
- 1:48:28and so it's you know, it's sucks.
- 1:48:31And it bumps both of us out and bums.
- 1:48:33Everybody out around the world. I wish we could have a normal
- 1:48:35day and go out for dinner with our friends and, you know, have
- 1:48:38a bunch of people up to the cottage but it's just not
- 1:48:40possible, Right? Also, you know, best to just
- 1:48:43have a good attitude about it and do the best you can.
- 1:48:45And and I think it's probably been used way too often but like
- 1:48:50the saying and I've lived by this for years and then with
- 1:48:52covid everyone's like oh it is what it is.
- 1:48:54But you know what, it is what it is and you just have to kind of
- 1:48:57deal with it for now and no like well this isn't my forever, you
- 1:49:01know we're in like a serious like worldwide State and yeah
- 1:49:05you know just doing your individual part for me it's been
- 1:49:08interesting because so I've been traveling all Obviously for
- 1:49:11school because I have to I have to go back and forth and so the
- 1:49:16flights have been fantastic. You're on this 400-person
- 1:49:20airline with like, 45 people on it and it is your own Rose.
- 1:49:24You're stretching out nice. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:49:28Yeah. So in that sense, it's been that
- 1:49:30so defining. I went.
- 1:49:31Yeah, it's the little things in life.
- 1:49:34Everyone in first class. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:49:37I'm sure they'd be okay with it. But, ya know, like and then it's
- 1:49:40like, Do your two weeks of quarantine I think in total
- 1:49:43because I've been traveling, I've done like two months of
- 1:49:45quarantine e which is no fun for anyone.
- 1:49:49But I mean, I think we have enough Hobbies on the Goethe and
- 1:49:52I think that's huge. Like if anything this is just
- 1:49:55highlighted like hey if you have to like be locked down.
- 1:49:58If you have to be in your house, like you need to have some
- 1:50:00hobbies that you're excited. You can't just sit there and I'm
- 1:50:03sure like alcohol abuse and substance abuse, and things like
- 1:50:07that are just going through the roof.
- 1:50:08I would guess because there's not much to do.
- 1:50:11Do but like so you know for we have podcast and music and I'm a
- 1:50:15big artist myself like I've been I've done a ton of painting
- 1:50:18because it's just things to pass the time and yeah, I think
- 1:50:22that's one thing is like, you know, get your hobby, get
- 1:50:24something you can do irrespective of whether there's
- 1:50:28a pandemic or not. I've interviewed a couple of
- 1:50:31people from Canada and there's been not varying kind of
- 1:50:36responses as far as that the level of restrictions and stuff.
- 1:50:39And obviously, you know, it's the same in the say that it's
- 1:50:41dependent largely on on outbreaks and where the numbers
- 1:50:45are deemed higher or lower one of the restrictions like and
- 1:50:50what I've have they been like and what's the response been
- 1:50:53like to them in Toronto Canada? Yeah.
- 1:50:57Yeah, good question. So we went right into like
- 1:51:01lockdown around March time where everybody kind of locked down.
- 1:51:04The one thing I will say is that least in Toronto the the actual
- 1:51:09restrictions and rules aren't nearly as clear as they are in
- 1:51:13other places like even Eastern Canada.
- 1:51:15Does a really good job at laying down.
- 1:51:17This is what you can and can't do and I know there's some
- 1:51:20places in the UK that are like that too.
- 1:51:21Ours is very wishy-washy. So it's, you know, there was
- 1:51:25this whole bubble Talk going on for a while where you can only
- 1:51:28have 10 people in your bubble but then they weren't really
- 1:51:30clear as to like, what if I have one bubble but someone in my
- 1:51:33household has another bubble? Will it just?
- 1:51:36Yeah. Like it didn't really make sense
- 1:51:39and then we've been open for a long time like restaurants and
- 1:51:41all that was able to go back into business and just recently
- 1:51:46I think a week ago, yeah they locked down.
- 1:51:48All of Ontario. Now we'll before that we
- 1:51:50actually started on like a regional like yeah approach.
- 1:51:53So OK, everyone into like specific Ins.
- 1:51:57And then if you were, if your numbers were too high, we're
- 1:52:00going to lock them down. And then as expected, oh I can't
- 1:52:04go out to dinner in my region. Well, I'll just travel 20
- 1:52:06minutes it go to the next region where restaurants are still open
- 1:52:08and it's obviously happened and then.
- 1:52:10So now yeah, as of about a week ago, now we're like full
- 1:52:14lockdown, no restaurants nothing but as far as I know, there's no
- 1:52:19there's no curfew like we've seen in other areas of the
- 1:52:23world. We don't have a curfew, it's
- 1:52:24basically just They haven't even said if you like I think there's
- 1:52:28still a number out there that you can have a certain number of
- 1:52:30people over. Yeah, I don't know, but I'm not
- 1:52:34supposed to travel. You're not supposed to cross
- 1:52:36regions and drive and then everything shut down.
- 1:52:39Except for basically grocery stores in anything deemed
- 1:52:41essential funny, enough liquor stores and Cannabis shops are
- 1:52:46deemed essential. I mean, of course, right?
- 1:52:49Yeah. And my thoughts, exactly.
- 1:52:51Oh, no. Um, have you seen any kind of
- 1:52:55like Crazy responses in Canada, as far as people acting a bit
- 1:53:01crazy. I mean, obviously the prevailing
- 1:53:03Trend in most of the world initially has been you know the
- 1:53:07beginning of the pandemic has always been you know like
- 1:53:09stockpiling. All this ship is there anything
- 1:53:11else that you've seen for sure. We have an Idaho were, like, I
- 1:53:16don't really go out in public, so it's not like I've seen this
- 1:53:18firsthand but definitely on social media.
- 1:53:20You've got your strong anti masker, anti-vaxxer community.
- 1:53:26That are just, I think actually the other day I saw a video of a
- 1:53:29bunch of people. Right before we went into
- 1:53:31lockdown, dressed up in these white hazmat suits with a white
- 1:53:34almost almost V for Vendetta masks and they all walked
- 1:53:38silently through one of the malls.
- 1:53:39In Toronto with this big speaker playing like the government is
- 1:53:43your friend. You people are the Sheep's and
- 1:53:46Bubble Boy. Yeah that's just watch.
- 1:53:48That's probably happening today so people are yeah for sure
- 1:53:51they're the same flat earthers if they find something to
- 1:53:55fucking follow and believe Vin and sometimes it's just
- 1:53:57ridiculous but it is what it is. But yeah, I don't know the
- 1:54:00amount of people that all of a sudden have read one article
- 1:54:03online and are completely convinced that this is a
- 1:54:05conspiracy and they're not getting the vaccination, there's
- 1:54:09a huge. I would say there's a fairly
- 1:54:11large movement of people like that.
- 1:54:15Yeah, I think one for me, that is like I just don't, I can't
- 1:54:19grasp my head around, why you would do this.
- 1:54:21So one we had, we're going to go into lockdown.
- 1:54:25He says it on Monday, You know, numbers are so bad.
- 1:54:28We need to go into a province-wide lockdown on
- 1:54:30Saturday, and it's like, well, I don't get that, like if we need
- 1:54:34the province-wide lockdown, if things are so bad, like let's do
- 1:54:37it effective immediately right now.
- 1:54:39Like I don't get oh we'll give you one more week but it was
- 1:54:42because Christmas was here and we got to make a political
- 1:54:44people need to see their family and it's like, I'm really sorry
- 1:54:48but you don't yes know that that and then I don't get to with
- 1:54:52that leads into okay tomorrow night's lock.
- 1:54:56Up down. Let's hit the bars.
- 1:54:58Like let's hit the restaurants tonight.
- 1:55:00Let's do it all before we're in lockdown and it's like the whole
- 1:55:02point of going into lockdown is to try and keep everyone safe.
- 1:55:05Not like well let's get it all out.
- 1:55:06Well, we can and I just it's like those are the people that
- 1:55:10are making us go back into lockdown.
- 1:55:11It's like if everyone was just doing their part, you know.
- 1:55:14Being it'd be nice. But so that's something that's
- 1:55:16bothered me. Yeah, thanks for sharing.
- 1:55:20Let's go. Sorry.
- 1:55:22I can't get worked up on that fruit.
- 1:55:24No, no, I agree with you. I spin very similar in the UK.
- 1:55:29It's got me angry at times. But, you know, people just, I
- 1:55:35think it depends. You know?
- 1:55:36I mean, it's like you said about the rules being kind of
- 1:55:38wishy-washy. I think that like in the UK, I
- 1:55:41blame the government. A lot.
- 1:55:42Like I felt like in the beginning.
- 1:55:43Yeah, and demek Yeah, people didn't take it seriously, they
- 1:55:46took the piss, they still take the piss and that was annoying
- 1:55:49me, but I feel like the government here has never been
- 1:55:52clearer about anything. We've had the same sort of
- 1:55:55issues with like, you know, so unclear about how many people,
- 1:55:58you know, the bubbles thing. We have like things like, you
- 1:56:03know, there's a lockdown, but then schools are open and like,
- 1:56:06you can't be, you can't see your family but then, you know, you
- 1:56:10can be in a classroom full of 30 people or have like schools open
- 1:56:14with four. Andhra people like it's as
- 1:56:16contradictions contradictory rules things that don't make
- 1:56:19sense. And why do you think that is?
- 1:56:24Couple of reasons. I think that the government in
- 1:56:28general that we have right now is just very piss-poor at trying
- 1:56:33to like handle the situation as far as like making things more
- 1:56:37logical so we have the ability and the capacity to operate
- 1:56:43schools and universities like okay you can make a case for
- 1:56:47schools being open but like universities do not need to be
- 1:56:50open. You can do that 100% online and
- 1:56:53it doesn't make sense. Nstemi that like, they were
- 1:56:57completely done online at the beginning of the pandemic, but
- 1:56:59now they've been opened and like, why make that change?
- 1:57:03Yeah. And like, things like School in,
- 1:57:04like, I heard that schools were like reopened at one point, but
- 1:57:07only for essential workers families, which made total sense
- 1:57:11to me. Like, or if you've only got the
- 1:57:12essential workers out. Yeah.
- 1:57:13Have their children, their have much reduced like, okay.
- 1:57:16If you've only got like classrooms with like five or 10
- 1:57:19kids, that's manageable. But if it's like, the normal
- 1:57:22amount that we have in schools, I mean that goes against
- 1:57:25everything that we're telling people like what how is it
- 1:57:28logical that? You know we can't have you know
- 1:57:31people going to pubs bars music venues but then we can have 400
- 1:57:35kids together in the same spot. Like yeah you know they're all
- 1:57:39of those things and I've been questioning it since the
- 1:57:42beginning. We all have like I think if
- 1:57:44anything As much as there's a lot of stupidity out there and
- 1:57:48people acting silly, at least people are questioning and
- 1:57:51going, I'll hang on, that doesn't make sense and you know
- 1:57:54that doesn't add up and it's good, it's good to at least get
- 1:57:57people's opening their eyes a bit and not just following and
- 1:58:00doing whatever they're told because and that's the thing, if
- 1:58:04you do, if you're just the type of person that just does what
- 1:58:07they're told and follows the government such as instructions
- 1:58:10in the UK you'd be you'd still be confused because it's never
- 1:58:13clear. Like I remember the last
- 1:58:15address. Don't pay attention to them
- 1:58:18often because a lot of the time, it's just like, okay, we just
- 1:58:21have a lesson version of restrictions, or do we have
- 1:58:24heightened, it's always basically the same but I try to
- 1:58:26look out for that. The major changes that happen
- 1:58:29and the last major address that the Prime Minister made other
- 1:58:33than the Christmas stuff, which I could go into, like, a whole
- 1:58:36fucking argument about, but that's for another time it was
- 1:58:41before, as you. Yeah.
- 1:58:43But before he was about to put us into a second knockdown.
- 1:58:46Just for a month, he started laying out all the rules, right?
- 1:58:49And it was all pretty straightforward, but then he and
- 1:58:52his typifies, everything that I just said he kinda goes.
- 1:58:56Yeah. So you the, the rule of six
- 1:58:59still applies. You can't be in a group any
- 1:59:01larger than 6 and you can, you can you can't really mix with
- 1:59:06other households but you can mix with one person from another
- 1:59:09household and then he jumps to the next thing and I might hang
- 1:59:11on. Yeah, okay, let's back up a
- 1:59:14second. So you're saying Can't we can
- 1:59:16mix with other households but we can only mix with one person
- 1:59:20from that other household. Watch difference.
- 1:59:22Does it make if we mix with one person or 12 people from that
- 1:59:26other bubble? When they were all breathing the
- 1:59:28same air being in the same environment and makes no fucking
- 1:59:31sense? Augustus.
- 1:59:33It's been like, what? Nine months of that shit.
- 1:59:36Yeah. It's what if I live in a
- 1:59:38household with six people? So, does that mean we're
- 1:59:41excluded from having somebody else because we're already six
- 1:59:44or does that mean six additional?
- 1:59:46People can come in like it's very wishy-washy.
- 1:59:49I think part of it is is like, what you were talking about
- 1:59:51Christian? Is that there's no, there's no
- 1:59:53right answer to this. It's kind of like economics.
- 1:59:56Like every action has a reaction and it's not necessarily the
- 2:00:00right way to do it. There's no cookie cutter.
- 2:00:02I'll well, this is what we do in a pandemic.
- 2:00:04This is what works solution. And so what we're doing is
- 2:00:07trying to find the best way to manage it.
- 2:00:10And for governments, I always can't help but think that there
- 2:00:15has it. Meant to say one thing because
- 2:00:19they're not certain, they don't know.
- 2:00:21So they wouldn't they don't want to say okay this is the rule and
- 2:00:24then find out that they're wrong and now we'll just see really we
- 2:00:28were wrong. We stood by a decision but we
- 2:00:31were wrong. We fucked up like everyone makes
- 2:00:33mistakes you know that's not how politics works, right?
- 2:00:36Yes. Like you now we're not getting
- 2:00:38elected next year because red party's coming in and saying,
- 2:00:41well you guys fucked up and we're perfect.
- 2:00:44It's I don't agree with that, I think You're right.
- 2:00:46That's how it should be. That's how it should be.
- 2:00:48Yeah, but I think one of the worst Parts about all of this is
- 2:00:50that covid is not being handled from like a medical standpoint.
- 2:00:53And I know I'm certainly biased because that's like the industry
- 2:00:56that I'm in. But it's like, there are people
- 2:00:58that this is their job, they study viruses, they study
- 2:01:02pandemics for years and years and they're Specialists and like
- 2:01:04their advising decisions. And then the government is
- 2:01:07adapting it to what suits the needs of like politics and the
- 2:01:10government. And it's like, well no wonder
- 2:01:12it's not gonna work like, yes, I couldn't agree more with.
- 2:01:16State hearing that shit, you know, like it really started to
- 2:01:21angry. I was like, look that the we're
- 2:01:23in a fucking pandemic. I don't care about like your
- 2:01:25poll ratings or any of that shit.
- 2:01:27Remember, when Trump said that, he said, what did he say?
- 2:01:29Like, oh my like I know it's Trump.
- 2:01:33So like, obviously, it's ridiculous when he said
- 2:01:36something earlier, on, in the year about how his Daily Press
- 2:01:41briefings would getting like the highest ratings on the network.
- 2:01:44I was like, where the fuck is? Is your head man?
- 2:01:47Like what are you smoking? Like, fuck it up.
- 2:01:51That's my sense of like, unawareness and a lot of its
- 2:01:54money to like a lot of it comes from this, you know, I can't
- 2:01:59remember the word is, but it's these people that are pushing
- 2:02:01their agendas. So you've got, you know, the
- 2:02:04medical advisor telling you one thing and they're saying, well,
- 2:02:06this is what we should do. And then you've got all of the
- 2:02:09people who have paid for your entire poll, who donate millions
- 2:02:13and billions of dollars towards your movements saying Hey,
- 2:02:16that's not what we want. Ya watchin work for us, so fuck
- 2:02:20us over. Say goodbye to your hundred
- 2:02:22million dollars that we gave you last year.
- 2:02:24See his the thing. I agree with you and to, like
- 2:02:27fully address your earlier question about, like all, why do
- 2:02:30you think they've done that? Like, I honestly think a lot of
- 2:02:33the decisions that the government are making the UK
- 2:02:35now, a purely business driven, I mean, it's a business
- 2:02:38government. The conservatives are far right,
- 2:02:41but in the UK, I've always seen it as that.
- 2:02:44Conservatives, a business lady. Labor is more about the worker,
- 2:02:48so to speak, and that's fine. But like they already kind of
- 2:02:54fucked us with the first lockdown, which was necessary
- 2:02:59but it was, it came way too late.
- 2:03:00And like I said, the instructions were always off and
- 2:03:04like we the biggest mistake. I think we made was open
- 2:03:08essentially opening in the country pretty much up in some.
- 2:03:12I like it wasn't completely business as normal but But we
- 2:03:16were allowed to essentially have like, you know, bars open, you
- 2:03:20know, clubs all that shit. And I thought that was just the
- 2:03:23biggest mistake ever. Like, don't get me wrong.
- 2:03:25I don't want that, I never want that.
- 2:03:27I just want things to go back to the way they were, but like,
- 2:03:30yeah, decisions like that. And, like having Christmas as
- 2:03:33well. I, when I heard like, in the UK,
- 2:03:35here's what happened, right? Boris goes.
- 2:03:39Okay, so we come out of the second lockdown, so it's like
- 2:03:42early December and like everyone's like iskcon's
- 2:03:44Christmas going to happen is you're going to cancel
- 2:03:46Christmas, what's going to happen and he says about two
- 2:03:49weeks before. Yeah, we're get, you can have
- 2:03:52sort of a Christmas, but it you can only have like a restricted
- 2:03:55amount and it's according to your tea restrictions because
- 2:03:58we're all in different tiers, Regional tears.
- 2:04:02But it looked like we were at least getting something and then
- 2:04:05at the last minute, maybe like a week before he goes.
- 2:04:07As yeah. No.
- 2:04:08We're going to have to double back on that and essentially
- 2:04:10that he canceled Christmas essentially, you know, and like
- 2:04:14that. I know it sucks to be that guy.
- 2:04:16I'd have to do that, but he shouldn't have been giving any
- 2:04:19form of Christmas. In the first place, we should
- 2:04:21have just seen it as a write-off because we're not, you know, I
- 2:04:25hate to fucking agree with a government but like you know as
- 2:04:28far as like needing to adhere to rules and restrictions, I think
- 2:04:32it's very important and I think a lot of time with people not
- 2:04:36obeying the rules, I think it comes Down to like being sick
- 2:04:38and tired and wanting to get back to normality which I do
- 2:04:41understand. But definitely up to the
- 2:04:43government to make everything clear and make it consistent.
- 2:04:46And they have not made it consistent and they've always
- 2:04:49been a to blame and because of that, it's made things worse.
- 2:04:55Like I felt like that summer opening, Maids.
- 2:04:59I probably added another like six months to this already
- 2:05:02existing. Yeah.
- 2:05:04And I think we did the same thing here too.
- 2:05:05Yeah, I agree. We opened everything up.
- 2:05:07In summer, and it's like it's nice out.
- 2:05:10You know what? Let's open the patios.
- 2:05:12Let's open the. And it's like, why wait?
- 2:05:14We just shouldn't be doing that. I like them.
- 2:05:17And I'm very like straight. Like yes or no, do it or do, but
- 2:05:21it's like, so in this instance it's like, well, no, don't do
- 2:05:24it. It's just a terrible idea.
- 2:05:25There is a pandemic running around our country, though,
- 2:05:28entire world. And yeah.
- 2:05:31Like, I'm just, I'm just a strong believer in like, yeah,
- 2:05:33don't do. And they're like, well, what
- 2:05:34about the kids on Halloween? And it's like, you know, What?
- 2:05:37No offense, screw the kids on Halloween, they don't need to go
- 2:05:40house to house and get candy. Do it next year when there's no
- 2:05:42pandemic and hopefully, if we do it properly, there won't be one
- 2:05:45next year and then it's like everyone just went and then it's
- 2:05:48like, oh Halloween's done. What's the next thing?
- 2:05:50Well, Christmas, what's happening on Christmas and now
- 2:05:53Chris was done New Year's and it's like, there's always going
- 2:05:55to be a, what about the next thing instead of people just
- 2:05:58like being like, yeah, you know what, let's just lay low.
- 2:06:01Forget about all these things until it's time that we can do
- 2:06:04them. Yeah exactly.
- 2:06:05Like I I get so frustrated. Frustrated at people and their
- 2:06:09inability to be able to see things like that.
- 2:06:12Like I know not everyone thinks the same way.
- 2:06:14Fine. But yeah, why is it always like
- 2:06:17oh, it's genetics. Like it's like a petulant child.
- 2:06:20And you say to the child listen you can't have this thing and
- 2:06:24then you have to keep explaining to them.
- 2:06:26Why. And they going to but why?
- 2:06:29But what are you're just being mean?
- 2:06:31It's like that. It's exactly like that except
- 2:06:35it's a 45 year old man in your Dude just listen just listen to
- 2:06:39this happen. Yeah.
- 2:06:40And it and then they're like, well I don't believe the facts
- 2:06:42and it's like well you know right, yeah exactly.
- 2:06:45What do you do for a career? Because I don't believe it,
- 2:06:47there's no project. I don't even know what it is.
- 2:06:49Those people though it's just you may as well be talking to
- 2:06:52the wall like they're never going to listen to your opinion
- 2:06:55and change their mind. There's no support, there's no
- 2:06:58research, you can show them, that's going to get them to
- 2:07:00change their mind, they're just stuck in their ways and they
- 2:07:02know best and hey, why can't I have?
- 2:07:05We had a guy in Toronto. I don't know if it made
- 2:07:07International. Anon news, but we had a guy in
- 2:07:08Toronto who basically refused to lock down.
- 2:07:11He owns a small barbecue business, and he just said, no,
- 2:07:15this is you guys are full of shit.
- 2:07:17I don't believe any of your crap.
- 2:07:18I'm keeping my barbecue open, and I'm having people in and I
- 2:07:21don't care if they're wearing a mask or not, and it got all this
- 2:07:24hype. And then, of course, there's a
- 2:07:25huge following of those people who are like, yeah, I agree with
- 2:07:30him. We're all sheep.
- 2:07:31This is a ridiculous conspiracy. They're just trying to control
- 2:07:34us. I'm going to this guy's house
- 2:07:35for barbecue or this guy's barbecue place to get Sausage
- 2:07:38and it's just like you can't reason with those people.
- 2:07:42You can't reason with stupidity and yeah, eventually he got
- 2:07:48arrested and he he's yeah in the apparently he's starting a
- 2:07:54lawsuit against the state or the against the you know, the
- 2:07:57province or whatever but they've changed the locks on his
- 2:07:59business and it's developing all this hype.
- 2:08:02And now what eventually it's going to come down to is all of
- 2:08:05our taxpayer dollars are going to go towards paying.
- 2:08:07For this guy's stupid lawsuit because he decided to be an
- 2:08:11idiot about something, the more on but you can't ride my point
- 2:08:14is that you can't reason with those people.
- 2:08:16You just have to accept it and say, Mary, you know, I think the
- 2:08:20problem is that a lot people don't follow the rules, I don't
- 2:08:22know, it's that being a dead horse a little bit.
- 2:08:24But like you can you do kind of need to put like measures in
- 2:08:27place to like fully restrict people like and here in the UK?
- 2:08:31Yeah, I don't want to militarize State.
- 2:08:33Obviously, I don't want it to ever come to that.
- 2:08:35But like at the same time, I feel like people don't Should
- 2:08:38seriously unless you kind of have like army or police,
- 2:08:41they're going know, like janata mean, like you kind of in a way,
- 2:08:44you need that presence. You don't want Force, but you
- 2:08:47want someone going know to kind of reinforce that.
- 2:08:50Yeah, we should be fucking doing this.
- 2:08:52Yeah, in the UK, it's been like, hey guys, let's let's try to do
- 2:08:57this. Like please, please do this.
- 2:08:58Please do this pleased, and it's like no one's going to fucking
- 2:09:01listen to that. But come on, yeah, there it's
- 2:09:04very similar in Upland, so do Thing is supposed to be closed
- 2:09:08when I was there there in full lockdown, right?
- 2:09:10And they're not in it at the moment, but I bet they're gonna
- 2:09:12go back into it. By the time I get back there, I
- 2:09:14would guess. So, I'm like, okay, so I am in
- 2:09:18my house with my roommates and that's it and we're like trying
- 2:09:20to make the most of our final year and like study and we're
- 2:09:23going into the hospitals and stuff because, you know, in a
- 2:09:26couple months, like, that's our job.
- 2:09:27So we kind of have to be there and and I'm all cool with it,
- 2:09:30like the precautions are great. Anyways, so you're like, oh, you
- 2:09:34know, I would die for like a fresh Guinness, that would be
- 2:09:37be. Beautiful, and you just like, I
- 2:09:39guess we'll wait. Like, hopefully it happened and
- 2:09:41then I go into the city center because I have to write this
- 2:09:44exam. And there's a pub with like 200
- 2:09:48people out front of it and they're just serving pints of
- 2:09:51Guinness out the window and I was like oh okay and then I walk
- 2:09:55down the street a little bit more.
- 2:09:56Oh no, the Pub's aren't even supposed to be open Period.
- 2:09:59Walk down the street, a little more, another Pub served in
- 2:10:01pints of Guinness out the window.
- 2:10:02I'm like oh interesting, I'm like this seems terribly wrong
- 2:10:07then a bunch of Garda walk by do absolutely nothing about it.
- 2:10:11Right? They just and I'm like, okay, so
- 2:10:13this is just an Unwritten rule that you don't Like that.
- 2:10:16We're going to allow this to happen.
- 2:10:17Yeah. And I don't I just don't
- 2:10:19understand the logic behind that and then certainly there was
- 2:10:22like this one Pub by my house. That was serving it out the
- 2:10:25window. But there was a garden standing
- 2:10:27there just going, hey guys, you can't stay here.
- 2:10:30You can get your Pine again as and walk down the street, which
- 2:10:33is also illegal. Like you can't drink, alcohol in
- 2:10:35public in Dublin, but at least, I'm like, okay, at least there's
- 2:10:39not 200 people sitting outside of his Pub having a great time,
- 2:10:42right? Yeah.
- 2:10:43Yeah. And it's very strange.
- 2:10:45I was just like, How does this happen when it is illegal?
- 2:10:48It's against the rules and yet, no one's enforcing the rules.
- 2:10:51Even there, even the Garda, I was like, huh.
- 2:10:53All right. Yeah.
- 2:10:56Interesting and then I leaves and they go out a lockdown
- 2:10:58apparently. The bars are packed.
- 2:11:01And I'm gonna go back in like two weeks or so and no doubt
- 2:11:05they'll be like oh the numbers don't look so good back into
- 2:11:07lockdown, I'm great. You see that?
- 2:11:10You think that that, that whole mentality?
- 2:11:12Oh, we need to immediately try something and revert back.
- 2:11:16It's like, you shouldn't be doing it.
- 2:11:18You should like, you know, the rules just should be fixed until
- 2:11:23a time when week when we can essentially come out. and I
- 2:11:26mean, like right now, I mean, I don't want it that to be this
- 2:11:30way, but I would kind of expect us to, like, stay into in the
- 2:11:34lockdown until all the vaccines are given out.
- 2:11:36And then everyone's kind of like, I suppose, like good to
- 2:11:39go, so to speak. Yeah, you know, I'm kind of
- 2:11:42lifts everything and go back to normal and, you know, that's
- 2:11:46kind of what I want to happen and what I think is best, but it
- 2:11:49doesn't seem like we're doing that.
- 2:11:51It's just all fucked. Like, in the UK, like that tier
- 2:11:53system or told you about, like it's it's all over the bloody
- 2:11:55place as far as like knowing where you're at, knowing what's
- 2:11:58open It's not open. Yeah, pandemonium.
- 2:12:02Yeah and my prediction from like early on I was like watch a
- 2:12:07vaccines going to come out lots of excitement and it truly is
- 2:12:11exciting. Like I'm pumped for this and,
- 2:12:13you know, it's gonna take a few months to six months or so, get
- 2:12:17everything going. And I was like, watch the
- 2:12:20vaccines going to come out. People are going to lose their
- 2:12:22minds being like, Oh Perfect. There's a vaccine.
- 2:12:25We don't have to worry anymore. Not thinking like it's going to
- 2:12:28be like seven months. Yes.
- 2:12:29Before this vaccine takes its effect properly where we can
- 2:12:32like safely do what we were doing and everyday living.
- 2:12:35And then there's going to be another massive Spike because
- 2:12:38people are just going to not be vaccinated but like in their
- 2:12:42mind like oh everything's a little bit better, we have a
- 2:12:44vaccine coming out and then and it's kind of happening and now
- 2:12:48it now everyone's going back into lockdown.
- 2:12:49So interesting times we live in Yeah, to say the least.
- 2:12:56Moving things forward, would you say are the best and worst
- 2:13:01things about living in Toronto, Canada, and forget about covid.
- 2:13:05Pretend that's not a big issue for a minute, just in general.
- 2:13:10I don't know man. I don't really have much to
- 2:13:12compare to, I don't live in like.
- 2:13:14So I'm just going to talk about living in Ontario in general
- 2:13:18because we're outside of Toronto.
- 2:13:20I don't think I would, I don't think the city is I'm not cut
- 2:13:23for the city. I don't want to live like right
- 2:13:26in Toronto. That's just really busy and
- 2:13:28really hectic. It's very much.
- 2:13:30You know, like living on Oxford Street or something.
- 2:13:33Pardon my ignorance here but is I know Ontario's, a separate
- 2:13:36place. But is it like Toronto City and
- 2:13:39Ontario's like part of it. But outside of it or is it like
- 2:13:42areas The Province? So, take a state.
- 2:13:44Yeah, state within Toronto? No.
- 2:13:47No Toronto is in Ontario. So Ontario's, this big Province
- 2:13:52and then Toronto's is City inside of Ontario, ottawa's also
- 2:13:55in Ontario, you know, for the equivalent of like if we
- 2:13:58shouldn't the states then it's the sickest a essentially.
- 2:14:00Well, yeah. Ontario's like yeah.
- 2:14:06So we have a we have our own words for it for some reason.
- 2:14:09So we're in like Georgetown or Guelph which are just like
- 2:14:11smaller municipalities, you know, sixty thousand hundred
- 2:14:16thousand people outside of Toronto by 20, 30 minutes on a
- 2:14:20highway. So we're not far from Toronto
- 2:14:22but certainly not in that big city feel.
- 2:14:26I don't know though the goods and the bads, I mean, I enjoy
- 2:14:30it. I like Canada.
- 2:14:31I think we have a wicked Cottage area in Ontario, you know you
- 2:14:35hear about Ontario Cottage is like the Muskoka scenarios like
- 2:14:38that. It's just Absolutely gorgeous
- 2:14:40and beautiful. And the wildlife here.
- 2:14:42School downside is to me is definitely the seasonality of
- 2:14:45living here. Oh, I was going to say that's a
- 2:14:48positive for me. I, I love it.
- 2:14:51It's got its ups and downs, but the fact that it's hard to
- 2:14:53explain to people that haven't been here, but we get two to
- 2:14:57three months of really hot temperatures, like 30 degrees,
- 2:15:02we're in the UK, it would be heat wave that day and we get
- 2:15:06like, two two months of that. At least, then we have your
- 2:15:08falsies in which is like kind of gloomy similar to you know,
- 2:15:11Dublin every day of the year and then we have winter which is
- 2:15:14like Three feet, four feet of snow can get down to negative
- 2:15:1920. Just absolute freezing as if
- 2:15:22you're in the Arctic and then spring comes and then it just
- 2:15:25goes in this huge cycle where you have to be prepared for just
- 2:15:27heavy heavy winter and then also super hot summer, but on sounds
- 2:15:32perfect to me and II love it. Like that was actually one of my
- 2:15:35like I was gonna say it's a pile of snow but I also love the
- 2:15:39heat. I like the different activities
- 2:15:41they bring in. Yeah I do like that to and and
- 2:15:44for some reason it's just Just a massive talking point in Canada.
- 2:15:47Like everyone's just talking about the weather.
- 2:15:49Oh, gotta get ready for winter. You know, you get your salt for
- 2:15:52the driveway and it's like, share sure.
- 2:15:56Yeah, my girlfriend's parents are from like, no way north of
- 2:16:00Ontario, like, in none of it. So, like arctic's are way up
- 2:16:03there and they got - 70, like, two weeks ago, two weeks - 70
- 2:16:08degrees Celsius. I can't even imagine Anadarko
- 2:16:12glass, Aria house and all they just dress up.
- 2:16:15Appropriately. It's dark 24 hours.
- 2:16:17Oh, fuck that. Yeah, unbeli and not down for
- 2:16:20that. No interest.
- 2:16:21No, no winning HOH there this or like, for three weeks straight?
- 2:16:25Yeah. Middle middle is so great.
- 2:16:26That would that would fuck with you.
- 2:16:28That would that would be bad for your health of it.
- 2:16:31Yeah. For sure like throws off your
- 2:16:34whole circadian. Rhythm you need like UV lamps in
- 2:16:38the, in the periods of like Darkness.
- 2:16:41So that you're getting that like sucks, fake artificial sunlight.
- 2:16:45Canada's so fast. My unlike yes, especially people
- 2:16:48from Europe. It's hard to explain that from
- 2:16:50one end of Canada to the next end isn't extremely massive
- 2:16:55compared to European countries. It.
- 2:16:58How long does it take to fly from the east coast of Canada to
- 2:17:01the West Coast? We're talking, nine hours maybe
- 2:17:03at least 10, 10 11, 12 hours of flight I can drive 13 or 14
- 2:17:10hours North and still be in the same Province and see a
- 2:17:13completely different shift in temperature.
- 2:17:15Landscape. Wow like it's huge man that
- 2:17:18that's the cool thing in just for Dublin.
- 2:17:21As as perspective like people my friends there are like 45
- 2:17:26minutes is like a huge drive and I was like I used to drive 45
- 2:17:29minutes to work every day. Yeah like it did that for us
- 2:17:32that it's extremely normal. You can drive you know Dublin to
- 2:17:35Galway and like I don't like two and a half hours maybe that's
- 2:17:39the whole country the entire and driving.
- 2:17:42You know, driving Canada would be like three weeks of straight
- 2:17:44driving or something. Like that, like an outrageous
- 2:17:46amount of driving, but so different like you'd see such
- 2:17:49different Landscapes going through the Prairies and into
- 2:17:52the mountains. And yeah, it's wild and of
- 2:17:59us-canadian guests this before, but I think it's worth worth.
- 2:18:02Worthy question. Why Canadians?
- 2:18:04So nice. I don't know.
- 2:18:07Why isn't everybody else? So nice.
- 2:18:08Yeah, that's why you are so so yeah.
- 2:18:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, we're pretty. It's like, you got, you guys are
- 2:18:16known for being nice. And I got to say, like, every
- 2:18:19Canadian I've met Always been really nice.
- 2:18:23I don't know what it is. Yeah, I know a few assholes but
- 2:18:26yeah, of course, you're always going to find those people in
- 2:18:29general. I don't know if it's culture or
- 2:18:31Community or just, I don't know because I mean I feel kind of
- 2:18:35similar when we go to Europe, we've been to a number, you
- 2:18:38know. Ireland London France, Scotland.
- 2:18:41And generally speaking people are pretty receptive.
- 2:18:45I've always encountered fairly nice.
- 2:18:48Yeah, but we're also connecting, we're all soaking like you
- 2:18:50should run. How many people knew and in
- 2:18:55Dublin or anywhere? And they're like, oh, you're
- 2:18:58American lucky Taxi Driver. Oh, you're American?
- 2:19:00And I'm like, oh no Canadian. And they're like, oh sorry, I'm
- 2:19:04like really sorry. And I'm like, well, that's fine.
- 2:19:06Like we sound the same. I'm genuinely not upset that you
- 2:19:09called me American, but I think for the rest of the world,
- 2:19:13there's a massive divided between and maybe a lot of I
- 2:19:16think a lot of Canadians would play into that too.
- 2:19:18And be like we're, I'm not American but it's like I don't
- 2:19:21know, wouldn't I really hope they're like?
- 2:19:23Yeah, I think that if there's this really think Americans
- 2:19:26might take offense to being called Canadian potentially, but
- 2:19:29I think that probably really happens really desert.
- 2:19:31Like, yeah, they made actually traveling, like, I know, like
- 2:19:34there's been Americans. Also, like Canadian flags on
- 2:19:37their travel bags and stuff because you're just, like,
- 2:19:40received a nicer from from people around the world.
- 2:19:43I guess, I don't know, Finch. I think everyone should just be
- 2:19:45nice and and there were even better place.
- 2:19:49Go on back and couldn't agree more.
- 2:19:51I have to ask that question because it's so, yeah, just
- 2:19:53intrigues me. Now, this is a fun one.
- 2:19:57I've never actually asked any of my guests this before, but I
- 2:20:01think it's fun just to kind of like, Just look back on
- 2:20:07potentially, where do you guys see yourself in 5 years time?
- 2:20:14Still in Canada, that's good. I mean, easy answer for me just
- 2:20:20completing my training for Google which which is like I'm
- 2:20:23really bummed about that. Like finally like getting the
- 2:20:26job that you know what, 30 33 or something like that 31.
- 2:20:32But in terms of our like music and podcasts like I think it's
- 2:20:35just doing the same thing learning how to do it a little
- 2:20:38bit better. Each time we do it and like
- 2:20:41certainly music just like creating as much music.
- 2:20:43As possible. Like, I don't think that will
- 2:20:45ever be something that will stop.
- 2:20:48They'll be times of like not being able to put as much time
- 2:20:50into it as we'd like, and there will be times where it's like
- 2:20:52great. We have a ton of time to devote
- 2:20:55towards music but kind of just like, maintaining that building
- 2:20:58where we can getting better, where we can and see what
- 2:21:01happens in five years for me. Yeah, I agree.
- 2:21:04Same for me. Right back.
- 2:21:05I'm super happy with where we're at and what we're doing right
- 2:21:08now and I think just doing it better and bigger than we're
- 2:21:11already doing. In fact, I mean look how far
- 2:21:14we've come in a year and the podcast is only been out for
- 2:21:18two, three months. So I mean, five years from now,
- 2:21:22it's going to be pretty high production.
- 2:21:24I'm excited, it's fun to get into.
- 2:21:26So yeah I think just basically bigger and better than what
- 2:21:29we're already doing right now and maybe taking on more but
- 2:21:34yeah that's a guess we already give response.
- 2:21:36Actually I just love that question because I find it kind
- 2:21:39of hilarious generally. Like I've always usually
- 2:21:41experience that enjoy. Job interviews.
- 2:21:45And I always just think it's such a bullshit question.
- 2:21:47I mean. Yeah.
- 2:21:48Sometimes I like to joke and just think like or, you know,
- 2:21:51with your job or, you know, just like yeah.
- 2:21:53I've said that really in the One bank that I interviewed and they
- 2:21:57said, where do you see yourself in five years?
- 2:21:58And I said sitting in your chair and when he say laughing, he
- 2:22:02loved it, he thought it was hilarious.
- 2:22:03I got the job. Hey, I want to be here in like a
- 2:22:07year and a half so the real nice.
- 2:22:10Yeah. Sometimes confidence.
- 2:22:12Caught, there's a fine line between confidence and
- 2:22:14Cockiness. But if it's confidence, like,
- 2:22:17I'm confident enough to say this, but like, you know, that
- 2:22:19I'm kind of joking. But I'm also kind of not joking.
- 2:22:22I mean that the whole premise of that question though, isn't it?
- 2:22:24It's about. It's about goal and ambition.
- 2:22:26It's like they want you to kind of say, you know, with them.
- 2:22:31And yeah and why doesn't this known as silly with them?
- 2:22:35I mean like if you take marketing like my my field as an
- 2:22:38example, like either you could either say.
- 2:22:41Oh yeah, I want to be like her. Of marketing or you could be
- 2:22:44like I want to have my own marketing firm like there's
- 2:22:46different ways you could go with it and both are equally
- 2:22:49acceptable because it's like you're saying I have goals I
- 2:22:52have Ambitions I'm here for the long term you know you're saying
- 2:22:56various things with that answer. Yeah I was so that was one thing
- 2:23:00I was actually so I'm like in the middle of this like
- 2:23:03interview scheme and I was nervous about the state's
- 2:23:07applications because I'm Canadian, they can see that
- 2:23:10they're there. And there I was like, oh God,
- 2:23:12they're gonna Ask that and be like so why do you want to work
- 2:23:15in America? Like clearly?
- 2:23:16You're Canadian, wouldn't you want to work in Canada?
- 2:23:19And I was nervous about it and then I realized like they don't
- 2:23:22necessarily want to hear like oh I want to be with your program
- 2:23:26changing, the world like making representing your school like
- 2:23:29they just want to know that for the four years that you're I'm
- 2:23:32going to be there. I'm going to be a good fit and
- 2:23:34use it as a stepping stone to get to where I want to be like
- 2:23:37they want to see. I have goals and that your
- 2:23:39program suits those goals. Not necessarily like like you're
- 2:23:43going to be the best place and I'm going to work there for 45
- 2:23:45years and retire and I was like really nervous about that was
- 2:23:48like because why would they if they're just like oh you you're
- 2:23:50just going to use us to get back to Canada and and live there
- 2:23:54where you want to live and I was like, oh yeah, I should.
- 2:23:56And then they were totally cool with it because I'm not gonna
- 2:23:58lie. Like I'm not going to be like
- 2:24:00for you forever. Like I was totally like yeah,
- 2:24:02one day would like to be working in Canada and they're like,
- 2:24:05yeah, great. Do you think there's ever lucky
- 2:24:09As far as like, Americans didn't with Canadians?
- 2:24:11Like, do they ever hold that leg?
- 2:24:13And she guys, or like, is there any kind of?
- 2:24:17I don't know how to put it. Exactly, but like when you were
- 2:24:19talking then it kind of almost implied at one point that like
- 2:24:24He almost like it, you have it better in Canada, like why the
- 2:24:27fuck would you want to come to the states kind of thing, which
- 2:24:30is fair? I could see several arguments
- 2:24:33being made for that. And obviously it's well known
- 2:24:35how how patriotic Canadians are equally Americans.
- 2:24:38Are I just find that that kind of part of it quite interesting?
- 2:24:43I just wanted to know it is there like friction there?
- 2:24:45Li what's the deal there? Um, I would say not in like the
- 2:24:49medical profession and why I would be talking like that is
- 2:24:53because There's only four positions, you know, at their
- 2:24:56school and they have doubt, like 2,000 applicants.
- 2:25:00So it's kind of like a competitive nature of trying to
- 2:25:04figure out what are they looking for in their applicants.
- 2:25:07And if I'm just going to run off to Canada, am I just going to
- 2:25:10get looked over and not get this position?
- 2:25:14I certainly don't think like there would be at least from a
- 2:25:16met, I'm sure there is but no in the medical profession, I think
- 2:25:20they're more than happy to have Canadians.
- 2:25:22I'm more than happy to be there. Super supportive and it's
- 2:25:25actually been a great experience but I just didn't know like I
- 2:25:28just didn't want to be looked over because I want to work in
- 2:25:31Canada one day and then just be like well we want to train
- 2:25:34doctors that want to stay in the states and be like damn I
- 2:25:38instantly ruined my chances of getting your job.
- 2:25:40So that was from my perspective but I'm sure it exists in
- 2:25:44different different fields and stuff like that.
- 2:25:46No doubt. Yeah probably.
- 2:25:50Yeah. Thanks.
- 2:25:50Thanks for sharing that. I think you made some really
- 2:25:54good points there. I think, I think they're
- 2:25:56sometimes can be the stigmas between countries.
- 2:25:59I mean, it really depends as you sound industry and, you know,
- 2:26:02like a various different factors.
- 2:26:04But ultimately, a good company or a good industry will just be
- 2:26:08looking at, like, what works for them and not anything else.
- 2:26:12Really doesn't really matter. So where you are?
- 2:26:14It's more about that. What you can bring.
- 2:26:16And does it fit the mold and all that?
- 2:26:19That yeah, stuff. Exactly.
- 2:26:21And that's totally. I've never done an interview my
- 2:26:23life till this year and that's why the M26.
- 2:26:28So it was kind of like, oh, this is gonna be weird and it was
- 2:26:31like the most normal natural thing ever because they're just
- 2:26:34trying to like, it's not like you're trying to compete for a
- 2:26:38spa in school. You're like they want you there.
- 2:26:40They want the right person for the job.
- 2:26:42So if your work it, like they just want to see like if I have
- 2:26:45to work for this guy with 44 years, like am I going to like
- 2:26:49The guy are we gonna get along? So it was really like I've
- 2:26:52enjoyed our little. Yeah it was really cool not
- 2:26:55intense at all huge. The first one I was super
- 2:26:58nervous and then it was like now I'm just like oh this is
- 2:27:00exciting like at the meet, some new people may be weary and I've
- 2:27:03had a few were like, genuine connections with these people
- 2:27:06and it's like, wow, that's a huge factor of whether I would
- 2:27:10want to work. They're not so massive.
- 2:27:12Yeah, it's been really cool. And I've been on the flipside
- 2:27:16before I've interviewed numerous times and hired for numerous
- 2:27:19positions and that's exactly what I look for.
- 2:27:23I do, my vet, do a little bit of work, like find out.
- 2:27:25Okay, let me check out this guy's social media like make
- 2:27:27sure he's not doing keg stands on you know, Tuesday, afternoons
- 2:27:32and then. Yeah.
- 2:27:33Basically, I'm going to ask those silly questions like where
- 2:27:36do you see yourself in three to five years?
- 2:27:37I really don't care what you say.
- 2:27:39I could care less. You want to be in three to five
- 2:27:41years. I'm just trying to gauge.
- 2:27:42Like, how good are you at speaking?
- 2:27:44How good are you at? Thinking on the spot.
- 2:27:45And then are we going to Vibe? Is there a connection here and
- 2:27:48did I like you? I'm way more often to take the
- 2:27:50to take the person that I liked, if he's an equal candidate to
- 2:27:53the person who I have nothing in common with said this in the
- 2:27:56past pull cost before. But I filled it.
- 2:28:00The saying that, you know, there was a statistic somewhere years
- 2:28:03ago or like a saying or something.
- 2:28:04That apparently the first 20 seconds of the interview
- 2:28:08decides, you know, whether or not you're going to employ that
- 2:28:10person everything else is just filler or as you say to get an
- 2:28:13idea of like, how did they? It react to this Bubba, blah.
- 2:28:16But yeah, the vibe and the chemistry is the most important
- 2:28:20thing and that's why I find it funny actually like a lot of the
- 2:28:23time there's been so many times when I've interviewed for jobs
- 2:28:27and like there was one earlier that because I've been
- 2:28:28unemployed the whole year. I've been freelancing and being
- 2:28:32an unemployment benefit and all that stuff and it's the first
- 2:28:35time it's ever happened in my life and I will obviously
- 2:28:37leaning more on to the freelance stuff and trying to make that my
- 2:28:40career because I just can't find a job as crazy as it sounds.
- 2:28:44Of a degree in three years experience, like it still blows
- 2:28:47my mind to this to this day. But the weird thing is,
- 2:28:50obviously, throughout that time I have had interviews here in
- 2:28:53there. And it seems like, you know,
- 2:28:55sometimes you really feel like you're going to get it, and then
- 2:28:58I'll go as one where I literally, Like it was all
- 2:29:03pretty much all but done, and they were like, yeah, we're
- 2:29:06going to call you later. You just going to iron out a few
- 2:29:08things bubbler and then that cool didn't happen.
- 2:29:12And then I get an email in the evening.
- 2:29:13Like, oh, hey, sorry, don't have enough experience, blah, blah,
- 2:29:16blah, and that always feels weird to me because a lot of the
- 2:29:21time when I walk out of a job interview, there's just the
- 2:29:24uncertainty you know you feel that it went well but you don't
- 2:29:27know either way but when you get those scenarios where you like
- 2:29:29oh yeah, no I feel like I've got it and then you Get, it is quite
- 2:29:33a sinking feeling and because you're thinking about a lot we
- 2:29:37really connected the vibe was there was good with similar
- 2:29:40people like surely they're going to want me but then you know I
- 2:29:44don't I guess they just click with someone else but it's
- 2:29:47interesting. It's very interested is
- 2:29:49interesting. I love them.
- 2:29:51One of my last interviews they asked me how so how much are you
- 2:29:55looking to get paid for this role?
- 2:29:57And I basically, just well. How much are you willing to pay
- 2:30:00me? And that just, that's called a
- 2:30:02few times. Well like no, no give me a
- 2:30:04number. Okay, cool.
- 2:30:05You give me a number first and then I'll tell you a number and
- 2:30:08it just I didn't want to tell you like, that's the toughest
- 2:30:10part. Yeah.
- 2:30:10Like evaluating yourself how do you say a number like, okay, I
- 2:30:13know like the ballpark of where these roles are at but like I
- 2:30:16think I should be near the top of that and then you say that
- 2:30:19number and you just tell by their face.
- 2:30:21They're like, oh yeah we're not forget you get Ash this.
- 2:30:23Yes, I think that's a fair thing to do, though.
- 2:30:26Like whenever I look at her, Roll eyeball know when they
- 2:30:29asked me that question. How much do you think?
- 2:30:32Like you know you should get for the role I look at like, well,
- 2:30:36here's where I'm at in my career.
- 2:30:39United. Here's what I've been paid
- 2:30:40before and here's what the average is.
- 2:30:42So I think I'm at this point and I'm always fair with it.
- 2:30:45I never go like okay, for instance, if there's like a
- 2:30:48marketing exec role and it's paying like 24 per annum, I
- 2:30:54would say, pay me 22, based on my current experience, I think
- 2:30:59that's reasonable. You know, you try go and like
- 2:31:03pretty much everyone I've spoken to on the phone.
- 2:31:05That, you know, unless they're lying.
- 2:31:06They always seem to be like, yeah, that's fair.
- 2:31:08You know, like the yeah, you're the kind of I've never heard
- 2:31:12anyone go. Wow.
- 2:31:14Or like, you know they wouldn't give it away but you know what I
- 2:31:16mean? Like they would be like a pause
- 2:31:18or like aha. Okay.
- 2:31:19You know, there's nothing like that.
- 2:31:21And I think you just have to be reasonable with that question,
- 2:31:23you know, it's a horrible question to receive but you do
- 2:31:26it. Yeah, it just be honest.
- 2:31:28Yeah, it's very real with yourself and your current
- 2:31:31situation and and in the market average as well.
- 2:31:35I don't undersell yourself either.
- 2:31:36I think a lot of people do that they think.
- 2:31:38Yeah. I said lower number.
- 2:31:39They're more likely to but then it can it can work against you
- 2:31:42if you say two alone. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:31:44This guy doesn't value himself. Like you're like, you're only
- 2:31:46worth 18 who is cheap? Wow, why should we employee its
- 2:31:51cheapest? Yeah, that's why I make them.
- 2:31:54Tell me the number you tell me - private, what are you gonna pay
- 2:31:57me? And then they'll say a number
- 2:31:59and you go okay cool. I want a thousand more than
- 2:32:00that. I'm like yeah okay it's like the
- 2:32:05guy from the pawn shop things like best I can do is Is 12 that
- 2:32:11you like, but okay. As we draw things to a close
- 2:32:17today, I want to just ask you, do you have any upcoming
- 2:32:21projects or some final thoughts that you'd like to share with
- 2:32:24our listeners? Ya go.
- 2:32:27Why drop? So one of one of my that we've
- 2:32:31been thinking about for a while and working on is kind of on the
- 2:32:36whole idea of like making a multimedia platform and one
- 2:32:41thing I'm going to be working on in the next like six months is
- 2:32:44Like a clothing line into it. Yeah.
- 2:32:47So it's something like I've, like I said, I mentioned before,
- 2:32:50like, painting and art and I love his on and it's something
- 2:32:53that I'm really passionate about.
- 2:32:55Like, I've drawn all my previous bands, like album covers and a
- 2:32:59few other pans and things like that.
- 2:33:01Like, I absolutely love it. So I think it just kind of makes
- 2:33:04sense in this. That it's like, hey, you can use
- 2:33:06these companies where with some overhead pay, you don't actually
- 2:33:10pay for the clothing individually and you can upload
- 2:33:12all these these You know, all of your logos and and make all
- 2:33:16these ideas and just have a website for it and kind of start
- 2:33:19from there and just kind of brand promoting and tying it all
- 2:33:23back into the music and the podcasting.
- 2:33:25So that's something that I'm, you know, hoping to get going in
- 2:33:28the next like, six months and then in 2021, hopefully get
- 2:33:32things rolling. Yeah, my side is likes to
- 2:33:35continue what we're doing obviously, but I think I'm
- 2:33:36working on a much better video content.
- 2:33:39We have got a lot in the work so I'm just trying to pump all that
- 2:33:43out as quick as I can. Plus we've got our EP, which is,
- 2:33:45I guess, I said, is like four or five, maybe six months out, so
- 2:33:49we're still tweaking some stuff with that.
- 2:33:51And yeah, otherwise want to continue hopping on, on other
- 2:33:55people's podcast because this is a lot of fun and you've had a
- 2:33:58great interview. I actually should stop and say,
- 2:34:00thank you right now for having us on the show.
- 2:34:01This has been fantastic as pleasure.
- 2:34:04You didn't know, we didn't know what to expect, you know, just a
- 2:34:07quick conversation and we're like, all right?
- 2:34:10Well, let's do it. Mark asked me before he goes.
- 2:34:11Well, what's it about? I'm like, I've no idea, yeah,
- 2:34:14he's Said he didn't need to prepare.
- 2:34:15So let's just go on it and and have a natural conversation and
- 2:34:18we like to we love these types of things.
- 2:34:20So thank you again for having us.
- 2:34:21This has been a blast and yeah, just look forward to seeing more
- 2:34:26of our stuff in the future. Yet, look forward to bringing
- 2:34:28you to Canada. Yeah, I would love to.
- 2:34:30I would love to come. And yeah, thank you so much.
- 2:34:34Thank you so much for agreeing to be on the show.
- 2:34:36It's been an absolute pleasure and yeah, I want to say to all
- 2:34:39my listeners, make sure to go check out the hearse Brothers,
- 2:34:42both their music and their podcast.
- 2:34:44As you can hear, they are great, guys.

- 2:34:53many hours in the day. Definitely love to have you on
- 2:34:57the show again and I wish you the very best of luck in.

- 2:35:49Something like that. It all helps.
- 2:35:51It all helps me towards eventually.
- 2:35:53Getting maybe a sponsor for this doing this for a living.
- 2:35:56That's the ultimate goal. So yeah, your support, your
- 2:36:01feedback and anything else is invaluable to me.
- 2:36:04And yeah, thank you so much for listening.
- 2:36:07And until next time. Peace out.
- 2:36:09One love. I'll see you in the next one.
