- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to Bill Handle on demand from KFI AM
- 0:04Speaker 1: six forty.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Star Bussy filling.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Number cup Star, bussy jacking me up, start bus ten
- 0:14Speaker 3: thousand degrees And yeah, I take a day in the
- 0:16Speaker 3: shouty something to eat.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I'm always hold enough to like because I'm might be
- 0:20Speaker 2: a little Tuesday. And I do appreciate the.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Fact KFI AM six forty live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. Hey,
- 0:29Speaker 1: happy Tuesday to you, Nil Savadri in the morning crew here.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Handle has the week off, but so does Amy and
- 0:35Speaker 1: so does An. But we don't feel abandoned. We got
- 0:39Speaker 1: Heather Brooker, Kono's here. Of course, Will's here, and Matthew
- 0:44Speaker 1: is in four an. It's not abandonment, right coono eh? Possibly?
- 0:55Speaker 1: All right, there was a day when Starbucks prolifer proliferated.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Easy for me to say, like nobody's business, I mean
- 1:08Speaker 1: every single corner. And I've told this story on the
- 1:10Speaker 1: show before, and that is that when I was in
- 1:13Speaker 1: Israel many years ago, and I was in Bethlehem, and
- 1:19Speaker 1: they had this coffee shop right across from the purported
- 1:26Speaker 1: birth area of Christ.
- 1:30Speaker 2: That looked familiar.
- 1:31Speaker 1: It caught my eye and I glanced over and it
- 1:33Speaker 1: said Stars and Bucks. It was a coffee shop, like
- 1:39Speaker 1: a blatant rip off of the logo.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Stars and Bucks.
- 1:44Speaker 1: So obviously it is something that's become synonymous with coffee
- 1:51Speaker 1: getting the boost, not only in the morning but throughout
- 1:54Speaker 1: the day. Many people I remember here at the station,
- 1:59Speaker 1: you know, three clock, two o'clock, whatever rolls around, it's like,
- 2:02Speaker 1: let's go for some Starbucks. They used to have one
- 2:05Speaker 1: right down the stairs. As a matter of fact, they
- 2:07Speaker 1: had one right on the corner. And it's become a
- 2:13Speaker 1: part of American life so much so that the joke
- 2:17Speaker 1: is that there's one on every corner.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Right everywhere you look, there's a Starbucks.
- 2:22Speaker 1: You go to Disneyland and on main Street Disneyland, there
- 2:29Speaker 1: is a Starbucks. So they're everywhere. But that strategy is changing.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Having stores everywhere is going to be a thing of
- 2:41Speaker 1: the past. Company closing about four hundred stores nationwide part
- 2:45Speaker 1: of a one billion dollar restructuring, and there's a lot
- 2:52Speaker 1: of reasons behind this that we'll get into, but these
- 2:57Speaker 1: are in large meta as New York City lost forty
- 3:03Speaker 1: two Starbucks location that's about twelve percent of its total.
- 3:07Speaker 1: More than twenty locations closed here in Los Angeles. You
- 3:11Speaker 1: got additional closures in Chicago, San Francisco, other big cities,
- 3:17Speaker 1: and in Manhattan, you know, where Starbucks was the largest
- 3:21Speaker 1: coffee chain at one point. They've lost their spot to Duncan,
- 3:28Speaker 1: you know, but Duncan is you know, predominant in a
- 3:30Speaker 1: lot of these areas. You know, in some of these areas,
- 3:35Speaker 1: you can be driving down the highway and you don't
- 3:39Speaker 1: even have to exit. You just kind of partially move over,
- 3:42Speaker 1: slow down to get gas and they have Duncans and
- 3:45Speaker 1: then you just zip right back. There's nothing on that
- 3:48Speaker 1: It's not even an off remp. There's nothing on that
- 3:51Speaker 1: little barrier area except gas station and a dunkin Donuts.
- 3:59Speaker 1: So these, you know, disappearing Starbucks are becoming.
- 4:06Speaker 2: More and more.
- 4:06Speaker 1: The company says that many closed stores were and this
- 4:09Speaker 1: is the same old thing we hear all the time,
- 4:11Speaker 1: underperforming or in this case, unable to meet brand standards.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Not sure what that last part means, but you have
- 4:21Speaker 1: a lot of local coffee shops. Where I live on
- 4:23Speaker 1: the eastern side of Los Angeles, there are.
- 4:29Speaker 2: There are back to.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Back to back to back to back to back independent
- 4:34Speaker 1: coffee shops. I couldn't walk to a Starbucks. Let me
- 4:41Speaker 1: think in my head, Nah, I couldn't easily walk. No,
- 4:46Speaker 1: not because I'm a fat code.
- 4:51Speaker 2: There's one, there's one ten feet from my house.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I can't walk to star but no smart Assas. But
- 5:01Speaker 1: I could walk to at least a dozen independent places.
- 5:07Speaker 2: It's on. The best coffee actually in Los Angeles is
- 5:10Speaker 2: in my area.
- 5:11Speaker 1: But and so these mom and pop shops or these
- 5:14Speaker 1: smaller shops are taking a bite out of the whole thing.
- 5:18Speaker 1: So they've got more competition than ever from these local shops,
- 5:21Speaker 1: but also smoothies and bubble tea and all these other
- 5:25Speaker 1: places that pop up from time to come time. Then
- 5:28Speaker 1: you have remote work. And I said this then and
- 5:32Speaker 1: I will say it again. Both sides politically reacted stupid
- 5:40Speaker 1: to COVID, but in California, shutting down California the way
- 5:46Speaker 1: they did, and then it moving throughout the US is
- 5:50Speaker 1: something we will not recover for from for decades. That
- 5:56Speaker 1: means children that were taking out of school, That means
- 6:00Speaker 1: pop shops that were closed, that means chains that have
- 6:03Speaker 1: been affected just radically and unnecessarily, in my point of view,
- 6:10Speaker 1: took down a massive amount of the structure of.
- 6:14Speaker 2: What we do.
- 6:14Speaker 1: So you've got that reduced foot traffic, people working from
- 6:18Speaker 1: home now downtown business districts. If you look at LA,
- 6:23Speaker 1: it's a weird city. You go anywhere else and it's
- 6:27Speaker 1: they're working cities. People live in the city, people worked
- 6:31Speaker 1: in the city. Downtown La. They tried, they started moving
- 6:36Speaker 1: that way before COVID, and you know, with lofts and
- 6:40Speaker 1: all kinds of living opportunities there, people were starting to
- 6:43Speaker 1: get out and actually go out and downtown and that
- 6:48Speaker 1: closed up during COVID, and it's still crime went up
- 6:52Speaker 1: and all kinds of issues there, rising rent, labor costs.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Of course, safety concerns is on what is safety concerns.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Homelessness in rampant crime also went up during COVID, so
- 7:12Speaker 1: a lot of pressure there. They ended their open access
- 7:15Speaker 1: policy for restrooms and loitering earlier this year, and the
- 7:18Speaker 1: reason why they did that is because they would be
- 7:20Speaker 1: sued or there were issues, some legitimate and then some
- 7:24Speaker 1: that were just bogus. So they are shifting their growth
- 7:29Speaker 1: towards suburban drive through locations, which is big. The drive
- 7:32Speaker 1: through locations they have to deal with you coming in
- 7:35Speaker 1: with your to write your I don't know, book or
- 7:39Speaker 1: manuscript or whatever there. Starbucks plans to remodel about a
- 7:44Speaker 1: thousand stores with seating and power outlets, and they'll have
- 7:48Speaker 1: that in some areas, but really pushing towards these drive
- 7:51Speaker 1: through chairs of Starbucks are down about six percent this year,
- 7:55Speaker 1: and analysis say, you know, balancing that grab and go
- 8:00Speaker 1: kind of customers with the sit down patrons has just
- 8:03Speaker 1: been a challenge. I've sat down in a Starbucks a
- 8:08Speaker 1: couple time. I'm not a huge Starbucks fan. I like
- 8:10Speaker 1: some of their food, I'm not crazy about their coffee.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Never been crazy about their coffee. And when you live
- 8:18Speaker 1: in an area like me where you know you can
- 8:20Speaker 1: get such great coffee, it's never been my thing to
- 8:26Speaker 1: go through a Starbucks for any reason. But that shows
- 8:31Speaker 1: a very major shift in not only the the play
- 8:36Speaker 1: and the business plan, but the personality is Starbucks and
- 8:40Speaker 1: how that's got to change, and how I think it's
- 8:43Speaker 1: not going to stop there.
- 8:43Speaker 2: I think you're going to see more and more of.
- 8:45Speaker 1: This type of response because companies just aren't cutting it
- 8:50Speaker 1: with their original kind of let's be loosey goosey and
- 8:54Speaker 1: welcoming to everything. It just it's not working all right.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Bill Handle is off this week. Happy to be with
- 9:01Speaker 1: you through Friday. And we've got Heather Brooker in for
- 9:05Speaker 1: Amy k King. We have Matthew in for Anne, and
- 9:08Speaker 1: then ConA Will and I. ConA Will, No, ConA Will
- 9:13Speaker 1: and me. I can hear my mom yelling at the radio.
- 9:17Speaker 1: You take away the other person and then you say
- 9:21Speaker 1: it and.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Got it, got it? Love you mom? Got it? Got it?
- 9:28Speaker 1: Will?
- 9:29Speaker 2: You like the New Year's do you go out?
- 9:33Speaker 3: I'm gonna be working for New Year, so I don't
- 9:36Speaker 3: really go out.
- 9:37Speaker 1: No.
- 9:37Speaker 3: I used to, but it's an amateur hour, right, Yeah,
- 9:40Speaker 3: it's like, how do you get home if you've been drinking.
- 9:42Speaker 3: You've got to hire like an uber for five hundred dollars.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and they're hard to find because everybody else
- 9:48Speaker 1: is doing that. ConA, you got kids now, you're not
- 9:51Speaker 1: going anywhere.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Pre thirty man, yeah, ragers, Yeah, post thirty New York.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the best thing. You can wrap it up
- 10:05Speaker 3: at nine. I usually stay.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I can't stay up till midnight, celebrate with the family
- 10:11Speaker 1: and then come in here at four. That's not gonna work,
- 10:17Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. That's not I don't think
- 10:20Speaker 1: it will. We'll see I have not. I usually celebrate.
- 10:23Speaker 1: We usually go up to Big Bear and celebrate up there,
- 10:26Speaker 1: but I'll be here happy to do it.
- 10:28Speaker 2: But uh, I like New Year's. It never made me
- 10:31Speaker 2: depressed or anything.
- 10:33Speaker 1: But apparently there are people that get really bummed about
- 10:36Speaker 1: New Year's for for reasons.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Uh.
- 10:41Speaker 1: You know, basically, what they're saying is people report feeling
- 10:46Speaker 1: sad or you know, generally low or unmotivated as the
- 10:51Speaker 1: New year approaches, and the therapists are saying that it
- 10:54Speaker 1: triggers harsh self evaluation in comparison. And you know what
- 11:00Speaker 1: I want to conor you do not have to compare
- 11:03Speaker 1: yourself to me. Buddy, I'm gonna let you off the
- 11:08Speaker 1: hook this year.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Thank you. You know, it's unrealistic for you to tain't
- 11:15Speaker 2: that much weight in one day city on one day
- 11:19Speaker 2: a year. I like when you fight back.
- 11:23Speaker 1: You make me laugh, Son, make me laugh, Sully, I'll
- 11:28Speaker 1: kill you last, all right.
- 11:29Speaker 2: So there.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I get why people would do that, especially with
- 11:33Speaker 1: social media. Every listen, it is amateur night. There's no
- 11:37Speaker 1: joke that people are trying to squeeze money out of you.
- 11:41Speaker 1: For you to pretend that you're having a great time
- 11:43Speaker 1: on New Year's Now, there was a time in my
- 11:48Speaker 1: stupid youth where I went, wow, that was uh that
- 11:54Speaker 1: could have been filmed for a movie with my buddies,
- 11:58Speaker 1: and you know where you end up waking up and
- 12:02Speaker 1: just general craziness, all of those things. I'm sure we
- 12:08Speaker 1: all have those stories. But January is is. It's just
- 12:13Speaker 1: a day. It's a new day, a new year. I
- 12:17Speaker 1: get it. If you want to use that as a
- 12:19Speaker 1: starting point, not as pressure, but as a starting point,
- 12:22Speaker 1: say hey, you know what I'm.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Going to do, X, Y and Z.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I have a really really simple My standards are the
- 12:31Speaker 1: same every year.
- 12:33Speaker 2: I want to be a good husband and good dad.
- 12:36Speaker 1: If I can be on this radio station and hang
- 12:40Speaker 1: out with you folks, I'm honored every time I get
- 12:43Speaker 1: in front of this mic.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I'm honored.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Been listening to KFI since I was in my teens,
- 12:47Speaker 1: probably earlier, and absolutely honored. That doesn't change, it doesn't
- 12:53Speaker 1: get old to me. It doesn't go like I don't
- 12:55Speaker 1: take it for granted. I lose this job any day.
- 12:59Speaker 1: I love my life. Doesn't mean it's always roses very human,
- 13:04Speaker 1: but I love my life. However, this year, I'd like
- 13:09Speaker 1: to start building an R two unit from scratch.
- 13:12Speaker 2: That's that's the big R two D two. You mean,
- 13:17Speaker 2: what's that are used? Are you a trekky or something.
- 13:23Speaker 1: That's but that's like I would like to start that.
- 13:27Speaker 1: That would like to be a big multi year project.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I'm guessing, and that would be something. But as far
- 13:33Speaker 1: as trying to be a good person or those things,
- 13:37Speaker 1: I think we should do that stuff all the time, right,
- 13:39Speaker 1: there's no pressure. If you want a fresh start, yeah,
- 13:42Speaker 1: that's a great excuse. But don't get overwhelmed, don't get discouraged.
- 13:48Speaker 1: High achievers fixate all these goals. Maybe they didn't get them.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I think goals are walls, not hurdles. I think goals
- 14:01Speaker 1: and I really believe that you should know what you
- 14:04Speaker 1: want to do and do it. But sometimes I think
- 14:07Speaker 1: goals are an excuse not to do something.
- 14:09Speaker 2: It's weird.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I think it has the opposite effect on people. So
- 14:13Speaker 1: you feel like you laid something behind or you didn't
- 14:17Speaker 1: achieve some certain thing. Time is passing. You're very aware
- 14:21Speaker 1: of your age every single year. Listen thermodynamics. Man, it's happening.
- 14:26Speaker 1: We're all getting older. There's things I can't do anymore.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Don't say it cono. There's you know, things change in life,
- 14:36Speaker 1: and this if you want to use it as a
- 14:39Speaker 1: as a jumping off point for something new.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Great.
- 14:43Speaker 1: But the thought of going into the new year like wow,
- 14:46Speaker 1: I haven't done this or I haven't done that. Man,
- 14:49Speaker 1: that is that is depressing.
- 14:54Speaker 2: You know.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Sometimes coming off the mountain is what they call it.
- 14:56Speaker 1: That's a Moses reference. You know, after you see the
- 14:59Speaker 1: face of God, you're the you deal with God. There's
- 15:02Speaker 1: no comparison. So you wait all year for the holidays,
- 15:06Speaker 1: and then you come down off the holidays and you're like, oh.
- 15:10Speaker 2: The trees down, the lights are down. The way we
- 15:15Speaker 2: life is great.
- 15:17Speaker 1: There's all kind of lights going on in life, neat
- 15:20Speaker 1: things all the time. Not because life is always perfect.
- 15:25Speaker 1: It's because life is a great start on its own, right,
- 15:28Speaker 1: Like just waking up each day going I'm alive is
- 15:33Speaker 1: pretty great and every day you have that potential. So
- 15:36Speaker 1: winter weather sometimes affects people. They have that seasonal effective
- 15:40Speaker 1: disorder that can give people low moods if they like,
- 15:45Speaker 1: you know, the sun and the winter comes in. But
- 15:48Speaker 1: mental health experts they say January isn't a scorecard, no
- 15:52Speaker 1: moral judgment. Don't let that weigh on you. The lower
- 15:57Speaker 1: your expectations, not because you're less than, but don't compare
- 16:01Speaker 1: yourself to someone else. You have your own timeline, your
- 16:04Speaker 1: own set of things to do. If there's something you
- 16:06Speaker 1: want to do, something you want to start, go ahead
- 16:08Speaker 1: and start it. But don't go to the gym because
- 16:11Speaker 1: it's January first. Go to the gym because you go.
- 16:13Speaker 1: I want to go to the gym, and I want
- 16:14Speaker 1: to make I've been wanting to do this. I'm just
- 16:17Speaker 1: going to go ahead and do it. I'm giving you permission,
- 16:19Speaker 1: your old piled Neils Vaders. Giving you permission could just
- 16:22Speaker 1: be you be a regular old person come January first,
- 16:27Speaker 1: kno has already started.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Did you want to go to the gym? No? Okay,
- 16:31Speaker 2: I even believe it. Do they have snacks? Did they
- 16:34Speaker 2: bring your own snow to have cakes? That sounds sucky.
- 16:38Speaker 2: What do you do with a gym? Just hang out?
- 16:41Speaker 2: Look at dude's look at it? Oh, also something Neil
- 16:45Speaker 2: would like?
- 16:46Speaker 1: Wow, okay, it's a pick on the handsome, funny, smart
- 16:49Speaker 1: guy day.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Okay, I'll take it. What are you looking for? Will
- 16:53Speaker 2: are you lost? By lost?
- 16:55Speaker 1: Well?
- 16:55Speaker 4: Just wanders the hall.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Sometimes there's a little congestion in the mid hall. I
- 17:00Speaker 2: don't want to take a different route.
- 17:02Speaker 4: He came in here today. It was in the middle
- 17:03Speaker 4: of a newscast, just coughing away, and I was like,
- 17:06Speaker 4: what are you doing?
- 17:08Speaker 2: Get out?
- 17:09Speaker 1: You know Conway he loves a good cough. Yeah, he
- 17:14Speaker 1: loves germs. Oh yeah, yeah, he loves them. He does
- 17:17Speaker 1: not if you come if you sniff around him. He
- 17:22Speaker 1: has a bucket, you know how like at the end
- 17:24Speaker 1: of a big game, they take gatorade and they pour
- 17:26Speaker 1: it over the coach. He has like sanitary uh lotion
- 17:34Speaker 1: like wipes, yeah, but he dumps that over his head.
- 17:38Speaker 2: He has a I know that. They keep the booth clean. Yeah,
- 17:42Speaker 2: oh yeah, No.
- 17:43Speaker 1: They have a whole team that come in here and
- 17:45Speaker 1: strip everything down like Nascar.
- 17:48Speaker 2: They pull the mics out, they put new ones in
- 17:51Speaker 2: and does that too.
- 17:52Speaker 4: She does that before Gary and Shannon go in there too.
- 17:54Speaker 4: She keeps everything clean. It's just courtesy. I mean we
- 17:57Speaker 4: keep it clean. It spits when we keep it cleaning.
- 18:00Speaker 4: The news booth too. And I was in here one
- 18:02Speaker 4: day wiping down and Amy goes, what is this COVID?
- 18:05Speaker 4: And I was like, I don't know. I don't want
- 18:07Speaker 4: to get anything. So just in case, I'm like cleaning
- 18:11Speaker 4: the whole place.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Eh, get me sick?
- 18:13Speaker 1: No AnyWho, Neil Savader in the Morning crew here, happy
- 18:17Speaker 1: to be with you. I'm going to bring Heather Brooker
- 18:20Speaker 1: in on this one because I one enjoy her insight
- 18:24Speaker 1: and combo. But this deals with the theater. But not
- 18:29Speaker 1: that theater, not old ladies and gay men theater. This
- 18:34Speaker 1: is what like Broadway, right, Broadway is for everyone, not
- 18:39Speaker 1: just yeah. But if you go, you'll see old ladies
- 18:42Speaker 1: and gayment and me, how old are you?
- 18:46Speaker 2: None of your business?
- 18:47Speaker 3: Oh?
- 18:47Speaker 2: Gay are you also none of your business? Hey?
- 18:53Speaker 1: I love theater, I really do. I love a good musical,
- 18:57Speaker 1: don't get me started to bring it doon?
- 18:58Speaker 2: Am I right?
- 18:59Speaker 1: Oh?
- 19:00Speaker 2: But Brigadoon is a musical? It is Oh no, I
- 19:06Speaker 2: know you're telling me. I was like, I know that,
- 19:07Speaker 2: I know, but he's from the Ie. It's like that
- 19:12Speaker 2: is that that weird TV? But without the box and
- 19:15Speaker 2: the glass? Yeah, it's called stage. I saw Producers with
- 19:18Speaker 2: Martin Short back in the day. Also a good musical. Yeah,
- 19:22Speaker 2: great musical.
- 19:23Speaker 4: But we're talking about the movie theater.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Yeah, so a lot of disappointing. It's a disappointing year.
- 19:29Speaker 1: I I'm not that excited about film in the same
- 19:34Speaker 1: way I'm not Yeah, and I love film, I love
- 19:37Speaker 1: going to movies.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Well, you're not alone.
- 19:40Speaker 4: There's a lot of people who are clearly not excited
- 19:43Speaker 4: about it either. Because Hollywood missed their their goals, their
- 19:47Speaker 4: mark by a couple of billion dollars analysts had thought
- 19:51Speaker 4: that they would reach. Normally, they reach about ten to
- 19:53Speaker 4: eleven billion dollars in the industry. This year, they are
- 19:56Speaker 4: gonna not even reach nine billion in domestic ticket sales.
- 20:00Speaker 4: A lot of people aren't going to the movies. And
- 20:02Speaker 4: there's quite a quite a few reasons why.
- 20:05Speaker 2: A second year in a row, second year.
- 20:07Speaker 4: In a row. Yeah, So it's it's it's not good.
- 20:10Speaker 4: And I think, you know, there's a couple of factors
- 20:12Speaker 4: at play here. You know, one of them is superhero fatigue.
- 20:16Speaker 4: A lot of the big Marvel ten pole movies that
- 20:18Speaker 4: they thought were going to do well this year did
- 20:20Speaker 4: not do well. Captain America Brave New World came out
- 20:22Speaker 4: in February, did not do as as well as they thought.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Thunderbolts also fell short. Fantastic Four fell short.
- 20:31Speaker 1: I haven't seen a Fantastic Four started it and then
- 20:34Speaker 1: just didn't have It was.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Kind of a little slow and a little boring, to
- 20:40Speaker 4: be honest, it wasn't. Also, it's a franchise we've seen
- 20:43Speaker 4: already three or four times before, so it's kind of like,
- 20:46Speaker 4: why do we keep rebooting these?
- 20:48Speaker 1: Yeah, but at least they rebooted it with that kind
- 20:50Speaker 1: of the spin on the period, yes, and made it
- 20:55Speaker 1: a period piece and things like that. But and I
- 20:58Speaker 1: like all the actors in it, but I and I
- 21:01Speaker 1: like superhero movies, and I've always loved Fantastic four about
- 21:06Speaker 1: the film adaptations, But and I didn't really get that
- 21:13Speaker 1: much excitement. I love Marvel and all that, but a
- 21:15Speaker 1: lot of these things Stunnerbulks was okay, it was a
- 21:17Speaker 1: little depressing.
- 21:19Speaker 2: It may just.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Be one of the situations where, you know, throughout the
- 21:22Speaker 4: history of movies, different genres rise to, you know, popularity
- 21:29Speaker 4: at different times. Like there was a time when the
- 21:31Speaker 4: westerns were all the rage. There was a time when
- 21:33Speaker 4: sure gangster movies were all the rage, you know, And honestly,
- 21:38Speaker 4: from about what two thousand, maybe twelve to twenty twenty two,
- 21:43Speaker 4: Marvel movies and superhero movies were it like, you know,
- 21:46Speaker 4: they were hard.
- 21:47Speaker 2: What do you think the next thing is then?
- 21:48Speaker 4: I mean, I think the next thing we're going to
- 21:50Speaker 4: start seeing is stuff coming from maybe overseas. The biggest
- 21:55Speaker 4: movie of the year, the highest grossing movie of the year,
- 21:57Speaker 4: wasn't even English language production. It was from China and
- 22:01Speaker 4: it was an animated sequel.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Anime is huge, huge. It was Naizatu.
- 22:06Speaker 4: I don't know if I'm saying that right, but it
- 22:07Speaker 4: made two point one billion dollars just this one movie alone.
- 22:12Speaker 4: And so I think also to some of the biggest
- 22:15Speaker 4: movies that came out this year were family friendly movies.
- 22:19Speaker 1: I think they they hit with those if they if
- 22:23Speaker 1: it doesn't have some weird political spin to it or
- 22:26Speaker 1: something like that, I think those tend to do well.
- 22:29Speaker 1: So even Meg did better than PG thirteen, that's right, Yeah.
- 22:32Speaker 4: A minecraft movie, huge juggernaut of a movie that caught
- 22:35Speaker 4: everybody off guard. It was fun, it was silly. Leelo
- 22:39Speaker 4: and Stitch did big numbers. Zootopia two at the end
- 22:42Speaker 4: of the year here also did huge numbers. And I
- 22:45Speaker 4: think it's because what's happening is the audience is telling
- 22:48Speaker 4: you what they want to see more of, and they're
- 22:51Speaker 4: doing it with their dollars. On entertain Me, I interviewed,
- 22:55Speaker 4: which is my little podcast that I do. I interviewed
- 22:59Speaker 4: Kevin Getz, an industry analyst, and he says what needs
- 23:02Speaker 4: to happen is we need to start reviewing the movies
- 23:06Speaker 4: more in advance and having having more conversations about the
- 23:12Speaker 4: types of movies that people want to see. And what's
- 23:16Speaker 4: happening is your marketing and your long term plans and
- 23:20Speaker 4: budgeting is not aligning with what people are telling you
- 23:23Speaker 4: that they want to see in the trends that are happening. Also,
- 23:26Speaker 4: you've got a problem too because the theatrical window for
- 23:31Speaker 4: new releases used to be much longer. Like there used
- 23:34Speaker 4: to be when new movies went into the theater, they
- 23:36Speaker 4: were there for ninety days before they were at home
- 23:39Speaker 4: and streaming. But COVID changed all that. Now that window
- 23:42Speaker 4: where movies are in theaters is down in some cases
- 23:45Speaker 4: to thirty or forty five days. So people are not
- 23:48Speaker 4: going to go drop one hundred bucks at the movie
- 23:51Speaker 4: theater when they know they can just wait a few
- 23:53Speaker 4: weeks and watch it at home. So there's a lot
- 23:55Speaker 4: of factors at play here. You've got international market coming
- 23:58Speaker 4: in with blockbuster movies that has an international, you know,
- 24:02Speaker 4: worldwide fandom, you've got movies that have a short release
- 24:06Speaker 4: period at the box office, and then quite frankly, you've
- 24:09Speaker 4: just got movies that people are not interested in at
- 24:12Speaker 4: this time.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Yeah, or they'll be willing to wait and then watched
- 24:16Speaker 1: on their couch right exactly.
- 24:18Speaker 4: So it's a there's multiple problems that the industry and
- 24:21Speaker 4: studios are facing and it's going to be they're hopeful
- 24:24Speaker 4: that twenty twenty six will rebound. There's some big titles
- 24:26Speaker 4: coming out this year that you know, a lot of
- 24:29Speaker 4: Spider Man brand, New Day is coming out, Avengers Doom
- 24:32Speaker 4: Day has a lot of.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Buzz around it.
- 24:34Speaker 4: So we'll see how all the next year will fare.
- 24:37Speaker 2: But they got to do something, they got to change something. Well,
- 24:40Speaker 2: we shall see.
- 24:42Speaker 1: KFI and KOSTHD two, Los Angeles, Orange County.
- 24:45Speaker 2: You've been listening to the Bill Handles Show.
