- 0:16Speaker 1: to make your life healthier, happier, and more fulfilling. Today
- 0:20Speaker 1: you'll learn simple, Bible based principles for building and maintaining
- 0:24Speaker 1: optimum mental and physical health, all while deepening your relationship
- 0:28Speaker 1: with your creator. Here's your Heartwise host, doctor James Markham.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Well, good day to everyone. We like to welcome you
- 0:38Speaker 2: to Heartwise, and we have some interesting questions that have
- 0:41Speaker 2: come into our website today. And for those who want
- 0:45Speaker 2: to know how we generate our programming, well, you generate
- 0:48Speaker 2: the program by sending us questions to our website that's
- 0:52Speaker 2: Heartwiseministries dot org and we plan to answer them every
- 0:58Speaker 2: week right here on air with you. You And if
- 1:01Speaker 2: you have a question, just go to our website Heartwisministries
- 1:03Speaker 2: dot org and we'll either get a specialist or look
- 1:06Speaker 2: up to your answer. Because right now in healthcare, it's
- 1:09Speaker 2: hard to know whom or what to believe. You know,
- 1:13Speaker 2: you know, you read something on the internet, or see
- 1:15Speaker 2: a commercial about or even go see your doctor. You're
- 1:17Speaker 2: not quite sure. Well, we are not trying to sell anything.
- 1:21Speaker 2: We're not making a buck here. We just want to
- 1:23Speaker 2: give you solid information letting you know that there's a
- 1:26Speaker 2: place for modern medicine, there's a place for lifestyle, but
- 1:30Speaker 2: at heartwise, we also want everyone to know that's that
- 1:32Speaker 2: relationship with the heavenly Father that's so important. And today
- 1:37Speaker 2: we have joined us on our program Nick Evanson, and
- 1:40Speaker 2: Nick is the development director at Heartwives Ministry. Nick, we
- 1:44Speaker 2: want to welcome you here today.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Well, thank you for having me on, Doctor Markham.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Well you look pretty healthy, Nick, you know.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I try and stay active and eat
- 1:51Speaker 4: what's right and I probably need to exercise a little
- 1:53Speaker 4: bit more and eat a little bit less at times.
- 1:55Speaker 2: But so you do a lot of biking, don't you.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Yeah, biking is by far my favorite exercise.
- 1:59Speaker 2: You know, that question comes in a lot about the
- 2:01Speaker 2: best exercise. You know. I'm just happy to get people
- 2:04Speaker 2: moving in general. But there seems to be on the
- 2:07Speaker 2: cardiovasclar system a great benefit for people doing what we
- 2:11Speaker 2: call interval training. You know, go up the hill six
- 2:14Speaker 2: minutes fast, go down the hill six minutes show, catch
- 2:17Speaker 2: your breath. It's set changing speeds that seems to really
- 2:20Speaker 2: help the cardiovascular system. Yeah, how often you get bike
- 2:23Speaker 2: in and get outdoors?
- 2:24Speaker 4: You know, We try and go ride bikes at least
- 2:26Speaker 4: once a week, but sometimes we get out two or
- 2:28Speaker 4: three times and we do a variety. Sometimes we're on
- 2:31Speaker 4: mountain bikes, sometimes we're on road bikes. And I find
- 2:33Speaker 4: that the interval training really does help a lot. And
- 2:35Speaker 4: it's also great activity because it's easy on my joints.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's good for the joints. And you know what
- 2:41Speaker 2: an interesting story the other day I had. I worked
- 2:43Speaker 2: in the hospital yesterday and I heard this story of
- 2:47Speaker 2: a guy that's very healthy that had a condition called
- 2:50Speaker 2: Superventrickler tack of cardia, that's where his heart goes really fast. Well,
- 2:54Speaker 2: he was up on a mountain somewhere and he did
- 2:56Speaker 2: this and when you do this, your heart goes about
- 2:59Speaker 2: one hundred and eighty to two hundred and it doesn't
- 3:00Speaker 2: fill up and you lose blood pressure. You know, what
- 3:04Speaker 2: do you do in the middle of the mountain. You know,
- 3:06Speaker 2: you can't really fly in. You know, it's hard to
- 3:08Speaker 2: haul someone down the hill. So if you have health
- 3:11Speaker 2: problems in you're an athlete, you really have to do
- 3:13Speaker 2: some planning ahead.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Yeah, that's definitely the case.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Have you ever had anyone on our bike ride that
- 3:18Speaker 2: breaks anything or hurts anything. You know.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Actually, a couple months ago, I was out riding here
- 3:22Speaker 4: locally and we came up on somebody who had just
- 3:25Speaker 4: had a crash and had spine problems before, and she
- 3:28Speaker 4: kind of landed on her head a little bit, and
- 3:30Speaker 4: so we took real precautions with her. But there were
- 3:33Speaker 4: some people there that had some medical training as well,
- 3:36Speaker 4: and so she took it real easy and got up
- 3:39Speaker 4: slowly after being checked out, and she was okay.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Well, some of the issues I see is that, you know,
- 3:44Speaker 2: is if you do have an accident on top of mountain,
- 3:47Speaker 2: how do you get that person down? You know, is
- 3:49Speaker 2: there some type of stretch or device you can you know,
- 3:52Speaker 2: wheel them down on, because you don't want to carry
- 3:54Speaker 2: someone sick down when you're up high in the mountain.
- 3:56Speaker 2: But a couple keys. When ever you're exercise, you want
- 3:59Speaker 2: to be prepared. Make sure you're hydrated, make sure you
- 4:02Speaker 2: have good clothing. You know, the basic string rope, so
- 4:05Speaker 2: you can make things if you need, you need to
- 4:07Speaker 2: make a stretch or something. Some sheets where you can
- 4:09Speaker 2: sort of make a quick stretcher in case one of
- 4:12Speaker 2: your parties were to get sick. So all these things
- 4:14Speaker 2: were interesting. Well, anyway, this guy had this rhythm and
- 4:17Speaker 2: he passed, basically passing out, and luckily he went back
- 4:20Speaker 2: into rhythm. But if he would have stayed out of rhythm,
- 4:23Speaker 2: he could have had his blood pressure go low for
- 4:25Speaker 2: several hours. They couldn't fly a helicopter in. They'd have
- 4:28Speaker 2: to bring him down, and when you have low blood
- 4:30Speaker 2: pressure for several hours, your kidneys and other organs can
- 4:33Speaker 2: be damaged. So he was coming up with the plan.
- 4:35Speaker 2: He loves to cycle, and part of the reasons he
- 4:38Speaker 2: went into this rhythm was probably because he was overdoing it.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And you can overdo exercise. You make too much adrenaline,
- 4:44Speaker 2: especially when you're dehydrated, and too much adrenaline can sometimes
- 4:48Speaker 2: trigger these funny heart rhythms. Well, we have collected a
- 4:51Speaker 2: lot of questions that we want to get to today
- 4:54Speaker 2: on heartwise, So Nick, why don't you read us our
- 4:57Speaker 2: first question from one of our listeners.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Ye, well, you know, I know so many people these
- 5:01Speaker 4: days that are on medications for one thing or another.
- 5:04Speaker 4: And one of our viewers, one of our listeners, writes,
- 5:07Speaker 4: I take a lot of over the counter medications. Are
- 5:10Speaker 4: there any of those that could harm me?
- 5:13Speaker 2: Okay, well, Nick, I don't know if you know, but
- 5:15Speaker 2: over the counter medicines are basically medicines that anyone can buy,
- 5:19Speaker 2: and it's not only at the drug store anymore. Over
- 5:21Speaker 2: the counters can also include internet medications and any medicines
- 5:26Speaker 2: that's being passed from person to person. Sometimes we see
- 5:29Speaker 2: people borrowing medicines from other people. I see that more
- 5:33Speaker 2: than I like to. But anything you put in your
- 5:36Speaker 2: mouth could have a chemical reaction, and there's at least
- 5:39Speaker 2: two or three we really need to talk about that
- 5:42Speaker 2: could potentially be dangerous. Well have you heard of this
- 5:45Speaker 2: term metamphetamines? Okay, Well, there actually can be made from
- 5:49Speaker 2: certain things that are over the counter. These things called
- 5:53Speaker 2: a fedrin like products, and a fed is a stimulant
- 5:57Speaker 2: and it helps change the the blood vessel size and
- 6:01Speaker 2: a lot of these decongestions we see it. So look
- 6:03Speaker 2: at this and see if you see this word pseudo ephedrin.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Pseudo Ephedrin is a stimulant that can make your heart race.
- 6:10Speaker 2: We also have this chemical called e fedra in many
- 6:13Speaker 2: over the counter and diet pills. A lot of the
- 6:16Speaker 2: energy drinks that you see, they give you so much
- 6:19Speaker 2: energy and turn you around because they're basically low grade speed.
- 6:23Speaker 2: So if you can take enough of this ephedra or
- 6:25Speaker 2: enough of the energy drinks and enough of this decongestan,
- 6:29Speaker 2: you're literally giving yourself amphetamines. And amphetamines are addicting. Amphetamines
- 6:35Speaker 2: can cause dangerous heart rhythms. A lot of people put
- 6:37Speaker 2: them in weight loss medications because it helps them lose weight.
- 6:42Speaker 2: There was a picture for the Baltimore Orioles a few
- 6:45Speaker 2: years ago named Belcher, and he was taking a lot
- 6:48Speaker 2: of these pseudofedan type things and he developed a dangerous
- 6:53Speaker 2: heart rhythm and that was the cause of his death.
- 6:56Speaker 2: So these rhythms can be dangerous, especially a lot of people.
- 7:00Speaker 2: I don't say, well, if I take a little bit,
- 7:01Speaker 2: I can get away with it. So look, if you're
- 7:03Speaker 2: taking the over counters with a federan or pseudo fedin,
- 7:06Speaker 2: that is something to be very concerned abo. Now, another
- 7:10Speaker 2: one that people don't think very much about is tailanol
- 7:13Speaker 2: a ceda menifite. But the number one cause of acute
- 7:17Speaker 2: liver failure needing transplantation of a liver in the United
- 7:21Speaker 2: States is a ceed of menifine toxicity. So if you
- 7:25Speaker 2: take too much thailanol a ceed of menifin you can
- 7:29Speaker 2: actually damage your liver. Now, you have to take quite
- 7:32Speaker 2: a bit of this to damage your liver. There was
- 7:34Speaker 2: a story not too long ago about a eighteen year
- 7:38Speaker 2: old in Oklahoma that took like twenty grams. You know,
- 7:42Speaker 2: normally take five hundred, so two of those pills would
- 7:45Speaker 2: make one gram. So she took like forty of those pills.
- 7:48Speaker 2: And that amount of a set of menifin, which goes
- 7:50Speaker 2: through the liver, the liver has to digest it. It
- 7:54Speaker 2: damaged your liver sales, and she went into liver faire. Now,
- 7:57Speaker 2: she was taking this because she had a terrible headache.
- 8:00Speaker 2: You know, she wanted that headache to go away, and
- 8:02Speaker 2: she didn't know what to do, so she kept popping
- 8:04Speaker 2: the pills, popping the pills, and she didn't know that
- 8:06Speaker 2: it could potentially hurt her liver. Well, she took that much,
- 8:09Speaker 2: she went into liver failure and died. Well, the number
- 8:12Speaker 2: one cause of acute liver failure in America now is
- 8:15Speaker 2: a seed of menifine overdose. And some people take a
- 8:18Speaker 2: lot of over the counter thilanol, but they're also taking
- 8:21Speaker 2: other medications and things that go through the liver. A
- 8:24Speaker 2: lot of people don't realize that things like grapefruit juice.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Grapefruit juice goes to the liver. So if you take
- 8:29Speaker 2: a lot of grapefruit juice and maybe a cholesterol medicine
- 8:32Speaker 2: which is digestive liver, and then take a lot of
- 8:34Speaker 2: a seed of menifine, sometimes these these substances don't get
- 8:36Speaker 2: broken down and the toxins build up and they can
- 8:39Speaker 2: damage your liver cells. So that's one thing. Be careful
- 8:42Speaker 2: not to take too much tilanol. Here's a here's a
- 8:46Speaker 2: trick question for you, Nick. Do you know what the
- 8:48Speaker 2: number one cause of fatal gas to intestinal bleeding is
- 8:52Speaker 2: in the United States? The number one cause.
- 8:55Speaker 4: I'm gonna guess it's related to over the counter medications
- 8:58Speaker 4: exactly right.
- 8:59Speaker 2: There's a class called non steroidal anti inflammatories. Medicines that
- 9:05Speaker 2: are in that class they relieve inflammation for arthritis. You
- 9:09Speaker 2: might have heard things like ecatrin alieve the prescription forms
- 9:12Speaker 2: of napersin well, these are non steroidals. A few famous
- 9:16Speaker 2: ones a few years ago were celebres and bios you know,
- 9:19Speaker 2: to help inflammation. Well, these anti inflammatory medicines also irritate
- 9:24Speaker 2: the linings of the stomachs and can cause GI bleeding.
- 9:28Speaker 2: The number one cause a fatal GI bleeding in the
- 9:31Speaker 2: United States was not gunshot wounds was it was caused
- 9:35Speaker 2: by non steroidal anti inflammatories irritating the stomach, causing an
- 9:39Speaker 2: acute fatal GI bleed, something that could be prevented. Yeah,
- 9:43Speaker 2: and these are just three of the overcounters that are
- 9:45Speaker 2: very well known about. So you know, a phedrin, acetamenafine,
- 9:49Speaker 2: non steroidals, but there are many more that we can
- 9:52Speaker 2: talk about. So what I want everyone out there this
- 9:54Speaker 2: person ask are the things that they could be concerned about.
- 9:57Speaker 2: The answer is yes, look at the labels, see what
- 10:00Speaker 2: the active ingredients. Remember the over the counters aren't regulated.
- 10:04Speaker 2: And not only this, the things you're buying on the internet.
- 10:06Speaker 2: All of these things change your chemistry and can have
- 10:09Speaker 2: some tough interactions. We're going to be right back after
- 10:13Speaker 2: this break answering more questions, and I hope you'll learn
- 10:15Speaker 2: something about over the counters and we want you to
- 10:18Speaker 2: all stay healthy when you're out there and exercising. Nick
- 10:21Speaker 2: Evanson are going to be right back after this short break,
- 10:23Speaker 2: so stay with us on heartwise. We'll be right back.
- 10:43Speaker 1: In his book The Ultimate Prescription Now available from Tendale
- 10:47Speaker 1: House Publishers. Cardiologists Doctor James Markham writes, I was reading
- 10:51Speaker 1: a recent poll of men who were asked who they
- 10:54Speaker 1: thought was the most influential male in the world today.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Number one on the list was Don Draper, a cater
- 11:00Speaker 1: on a television series He's not even a real person.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Number two was Usain Bolton, Olympic athlete who many believe
- 11:06Speaker 1: defines the true spirit of competition, and President Barack Obama
- 11:10Speaker 1: slipped in his number three. This is just another example
- 11:13Speaker 1: of how the media has the power to create an
- 11:15Speaker 1: influential character, market him as an ideal to the world,
- 11:19Speaker 1: and affect the minds of a large segment of the population.
- 11:23Speaker 1: That same media is doing the same thing when it
- 11:25Speaker 1: comes to telling us how to build and maintain optimum health.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Doctor Markham's book The Ultimate Prescription is available from Amazon
- 11:33Speaker 1: dot com and wherever quality books are sold. To learn
- 11:36Speaker 1: more about health from a biblical perspective, visit Heartwisemanistries dot org.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I'd like to take a moment to invite you to
- 11:44Speaker 1: visit the Heartwise Ministries team on the internet. Stop by
- 11:48Speaker 1: Heartwisemanistries dot org and discover for yourself that optimum health
- 11:52Speaker 1: is not the result of favorable genes, of the right
- 11:54Speaker 1: commindation of pharmaceuticals. No, optimum health is the result of
- 11:58Speaker 1: making the right choices each and every moment of each
- 12:01Speaker 1: and every day. If you're like me, you're probably a
- 12:04Speaker 1: little confused about what the media and marketing moguls are
- 12:07Speaker 1: feeding us. There are a lot of potions, pills and
- 12:09Speaker 1: promises out there. Some work, some don't, and some are
- 12:13Speaker 1: downright dangerous. Whom do you believe? Whom do you trust?
- 12:17Speaker 1: Board certified cardiologist doctor James Markham, a founder director of
- 12:20Speaker 1: Heartwise Ministries, says, there is a source of information that
- 12:23Speaker 1: can be trusted and followed. That's the Bible, God's Owner's
- 12:28Speaker 1: Manual as he calls it. For us. All the information
- 12:31Speaker 1: you find on heartwiseministries dot org is information backed by
- 12:34Speaker 1: biblical truth. It can be trusted because God can be trusted.
- 12:39Speaker 1: So stop by, won't you? That's Heartwiseministries dot org.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Well, welcome back to Heartwise and the last question. In
- 12:54Speaker 2: the last segment, we answered questions on over the counters
- 12:58Speaker 2: and over the counter medications have to be paid attention to. Specifically,
- 13:03Speaker 2: three things we want you to remember today is remember
- 13:06Speaker 2: look for things that might have a Federan nurse pseudo fedrin,
- 13:08Speaker 2: which can hurt your cardiovascular system. Be very careful with
- 13:12Speaker 2: not taking too much a seat of menefit or tile
- 13:15Speaker 2: and all. And if you take non steroidal anti inflammatories
- 13:18Speaker 2: for aches and pains, be careful to make sure you're
- 13:21Speaker 2: not bleeding. So Nick, that's you know, a lot of
- 13:24Speaker 2: people don't realize these over the counters. Let's let's move
- 13:26Speaker 2: on to another question from our Heartwivesministries dot org website.
- 13:32Speaker 4: Yeah, this next question I can relate to. You know,
- 13:34Speaker 4: I try and eat well and I try and exercise
- 13:36Speaker 4: and ride my bike so that I don't get overweight. Yeah,
- 13:40Speaker 4: but there's a lot of new weight loss medications that
- 13:42Speaker 4: have been released recently. Could you talk about a few
- 13:45Speaker 4: of these and what is your opinion on this?
- 13:47Speaker 2: Well, that's a question we get a lot from heartwise ministries.
- 13:50Speaker 2: And if you think about it, right now, sixty percent
- 13:54Speaker 2: of the country are overweight, thirty percent are obese. All
- 13:58Speaker 2: the stress of this system, them called the indo cannabinoid system,
- 14:02Speaker 2: makes a bunch of chemicals that damage your body. Damage
- 14:05Speaker 2: is a body, then we need medicines, et cetera et cetera.
- 14:08Speaker 2: So if we can get at the root cause, we're
- 14:09Speaker 2: going to be successful. If you look at the ways
- 14:11Speaker 2: to lose weight out there, we have gastric bypass surgery
- 14:15Speaker 2: where they bypassed your stomach and make it small like
- 14:17Speaker 2: a pouch, so you can't eat very much. We have
- 14:21Speaker 2: a procedure where they you know, where they put bands
- 14:23Speaker 2: around the esophagus. Okay, banning procedures. And then we have
- 14:27Speaker 2: all the medicines. And I've been around for a few
- 14:29Speaker 2: years now, Nick, and the medicines that we've had, We've
- 14:33Speaker 2: had things like fin Fin. A lot of people have
- 14:36Speaker 2: heard about that fin Fin. They had to take off
- 14:39Speaker 2: the market because it was causing heart valve problems. Okay.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Then came along another weight loss medication called Meridian that
- 14:48Speaker 2: again had to be take off the market, you know.
- 14:50Speaker 2: And all these medications sped up the metabolism. A lot
- 14:53Speaker 2: of them have thyroid medications, which again speed up metabolism.
- 14:57Speaker 2: A lot of these weight loss have the fed like
- 15:00Speaker 2: we talked about, what speeds up the metabolism. These medicines
- 15:04Speaker 2: do help you lose weight in the short term, okay,
- 15:07Speaker 2: but they also cause damage and there's some risk. There's
- 15:11Speaker 2: three new medications that are currently about ready to be released,
- 15:15Speaker 2: and people are going to start taking them as miracle
- 15:17Speaker 2: drugs to help them lose weight. But if you look
- 15:20Speaker 2: back over the track record of weight loss medications, none
- 15:24Speaker 2: of them have stayed on the market long. Many of
- 15:27Speaker 2: them have actually killed people. So these medications much must
- 15:31Speaker 2: be evaluated very very carefully. I don't think they're a
- 15:34Speaker 2: medicine that you're going to want to take the rest
- 15:36Speaker 2: of your life. I think that you know they're not
- 15:38Speaker 2: something you're going to want to do. So what we
- 15:40Speaker 2: try to do as a ministry is we try to
- 15:42Speaker 2: promote a healthy way to lose weight. You know, we
- 15:45Speaker 2: try to empower people with making changes one at a time,
- 15:49Speaker 2: developing a relationship with God that can give you the
- 15:52Speaker 2: power to help you overcome some of these habits that
- 15:54Speaker 2: we all have. Maybe get out there and start exercising,
- 15:57Speaker 2: might be one or two minutes a day, and then
- 15:59Speaker 2: increase it. It might be eating a little bit healthier,
- 16:02Speaker 2: eating more fresh, less big at night. So we promote
- 16:05Speaker 2: a more eat less, exercise, more relationship things. We recognize
- 16:10Speaker 2: that people are doing these things, but people must know
- 16:13Speaker 2: that for everything you put in your body, ask yourself.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Is this something I'm going to do the rest of
- 16:18Speaker 2: my life to keep weight off? And is it worth
- 16:21Speaker 2: the risk? So those are some things I would do
- 16:23Speaker 2: so right now, I'm very suspected of these new weight
- 16:26Speaker 2: loss pills. I don't recommend them. I want people to
- 16:29Speaker 2: try to do it naturally if they can. Why take
- 16:31Speaker 2: a risk of a medicine that we don't know a
- 16:33Speaker 2: lot about. But you watch, thousands and thousands will flock
- 16:36Speaker 2: to these medications, just like they did the fin Fin
- 16:39Speaker 2: and Meridian some of the other ones, but none of
- 16:41Speaker 2: them prove to be around a long time.
- 16:43Speaker 4: Yeah, So what I'm hearing you say is that we
- 16:46Speaker 4: need to maybe take the route that's not the easiest
- 16:49Speaker 4: and do the work rather than just taking a pill
- 16:51Speaker 4: for it.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Right. And you know, if you think about it, you
- 16:53Speaker 2: know that's going to be long term, it's going to
- 16:56Speaker 2: be less risk, it's going to take care of our body,
- 16:58Speaker 2: and along the line, I think it's going to give
- 17:00Speaker 2: us a chance to develop a relationship with a great
- 17:03Speaker 2: physician that can help us each day of our lives.
- 17:05Speaker 2: And I think that's sort of the long term fix.
- 17:07Speaker 2: If you think about.
- 17:08Speaker 3: It, it sounds like some good advice.
- 17:09Speaker 2: OK, let's move on to another question.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Yeah, so this listener says, I am having a hard
- 17:15Speaker 4: time sleeping. Which sleeping medication do you recommend?
- 17:18Speaker 2: Okay, that's a great question. Sleep problems are a major
- 17:23Speaker 2: issue in the United States. Lots of people can't sleep.
- 17:27Speaker 2: And I don't know if we had this two hundred
- 17:28Speaker 2: three hundred years ago, but you just didn't hear about
- 17:30Speaker 2: sleeping medications back in the seventeen hundreds with George Washington.
- 17:34Speaker 2: You just didn't hear about that that much. Unfortunately, Thomas
- 17:37Speaker 2: Edison invented the light bulb, and then we had television
- 17:40Speaker 2: and radio and internet and a lot of stimulants that
- 17:43Speaker 2: kept us on. So when someone comes to me with
- 17:45Speaker 2: the sleep problem, I tell them first of all that
- 17:47Speaker 2: sleep is very very important. It's important treatment for the
- 17:51Speaker 2: body to get good sleep, to get good rest. The
- 17:54Speaker 2: next thing I say is, well, you know, if you're
- 17:56Speaker 2: not sleeping well, rather than take a pill, which really
- 17:59Speaker 2: doesn't help you sleep better, just knocks you out, you
- 18:02Speaker 2: don't get into that good sleep. It just through the
- 18:04Speaker 2: like knockout pills. They've only been approved for short periods
- 18:08Speaker 2: of time, not forever and ever, and they actually affect
- 18:12Speaker 2: the cognitive ability that you have, the way you think
- 18:14Speaker 2: nick you know, you want to think good and this
- 18:16Speaker 2: they sort of clouds you up. And occasionally you hear
- 18:19Speaker 2: a story about someone that takes an ambient and they
- 18:22Speaker 2: get g looney tunes. One guy that took it and
- 18:24Speaker 2: took off all his clothes are walking the Middle Street.
- 18:26Speaker 2: It does affect the way your brain thinks, and you
- 18:29Speaker 2: never know what you can do. We heard a story
- 18:31Speaker 2: of a guy at the Republican National Convention or someone
- 18:34Speaker 2: around there that he actually he took some pills and
- 18:37Speaker 2: did some crazy things too. They thought he was getting sick.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I think that was Tom Brocall recently that did something
- 18:41Speaker 2: like that. But anyway, so I asked people, well, let's
- 18:44Speaker 2: find out why you don't sleep, well, what's affecting the
- 18:47Speaker 2: sleep centers of your brain? And the big items are
- 18:49Speaker 2: this one is there's a condition called sleep atnute. You
- 18:53Speaker 2: don't get enough oxygen that can affect your sleep because
- 18:55Speaker 2: you have alarms going off. You make adrenaline that wakes
- 18:58Speaker 2: you up because your oxygen go low. So if you
- 18:59Speaker 2: have sleep out and you get that treated stimulants during
- 19:03Speaker 2: the day. Caffeine is a stimulant. Alcohol can effect as
- 19:07Speaker 2: a stimulant. I had one person that came to me
- 19:09Speaker 2: didn't sleep good and was taking crack cocaine. As soon
- 19:12Speaker 2: as they stopped the crack cocaine, everything got better. Yeah,
- 19:15Speaker 2: I bet you know. But the one we see a
- 19:16Speaker 2: lot of is caffeine. So some people, the caffeine really
- 19:19Speaker 2: acts as a stimulant. They can't go to sleep. Another
- 19:22Speaker 2: thing is eating big at night, again, another stimulant. It
- 19:26Speaker 2: forces you to digest. When you're digesting, your body's working
- 19:29Speaker 2: on that. You can't rest. Another thing that causes us
- 19:33Speaker 2: not to sleep well, believe it or not, is television.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Television stimulates guess what, your brain when your brain's overly stimulated,
- 19:41Speaker 2: and some people the sleep centers don't work well. You
- 19:44Speaker 2: can't go to sleep. Your brain's working on that last
- 19:46Speaker 2: scene you saw, whether it be a good scene or
- 19:49Speaker 2: a bad scene, you can't work on that very well.
- 19:52Speaker 2: So we've seen a lot of the sleep problems develop
- 19:55Speaker 2: as societies developed, and unfortunately, rather than to get at
- 19:58Speaker 2: the cause of the problem, guess what, let's make another pill,
- 20:02Speaker 2: and then the pill can create its own problems. You know,
- 20:04Speaker 2: people they're drowsing in the morning, they not thinking good,
- 20:07Speaker 2: So guess what another pill will get them going, you know,
- 20:09Speaker 2: so they never get at the cause. And if they
- 20:11Speaker 2: don't get at the cause, sooner or later, the problems
- 20:13Speaker 2: develops and over and over. So what I encourage people,
- 20:15Speaker 2: if you have a sleep problem, look at the cause.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Could it be a stimulant. Are you not exercising enough
- 20:20Speaker 2: at night but before you go to bed? Or is
- 20:23Speaker 2: it something related to television? Are you eating big at night?
- 20:27Speaker 2: One of these things to do. And then there's lots
- 20:29Speaker 2: of other natural things that we can do to help,
- 20:31Speaker 2: including listening to nice soothing music. Some people like to
- 20:35Speaker 2: listen to the ocean, of course, relaxing, reading scriptures very good,
- 20:40Speaker 2: taking a nice walk, taking deep breaths can help a
- 20:43Speaker 2: body relax so it can go to sleep. And removing
- 20:45Speaker 2: all these stimulants. And if you practice these things before long,
- 20:49Speaker 2: people are sleeping better. So that's the way I would go,
- 20:52Speaker 2: rather than go right to the sleeping pill. Now, some
- 20:55Speaker 2: people do need a sleeping pill, but it's in the very,
- 20:58Speaker 2: very minority.
- 21:00Speaker 4: I can kind of relate to this question because sometimes
- 21:02Speaker 4: I'll be up and you know, whether I'm watching a
- 21:03Speaker 4: television program or maybe maybe I'm on the internet, maybe
- 21:06Speaker 4: I've got my iPad and I'm doing some research, looking
- 21:09Speaker 4: at some stuff, maybe a new bike or a camera
- 21:11Speaker 4: or something, and then my mind stimulates my mind. I
- 21:14Speaker 4: just sit there and land bend. I'm thinking about what
- 21:15Speaker 4: I was just reading on the internet, and I just
- 21:17Speaker 4: you know, it's not.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Helpful, over and over and over in your brain, and
- 21:21Speaker 2: that that that way, you just don't get it to rest.
- 21:24Speaker 2: And also, if you're a student out there and studying that,
- 21:26Speaker 2: you know, if you study way ahead of time, you
- 21:28Speaker 2: put it in your long term memory breaks. If you
- 21:31Speaker 2: just do it cram the night before, it's in the
- 21:33Speaker 2: short term memory breaks. So you might be able to
- 21:35Speaker 2: remember it the next day, but the next week you
- 21:37Speaker 2: might not be able to remember. So I hope that
- 21:39Speaker 2: answered their question. I think we have time for one
- 21:41Speaker 2: more question today. Yeah.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Our last question today comes from a listener who says,
- 21:45Speaker 4: I seem to have many bad health habits. Intellectually, I
- 21:49Speaker 4: know what I should be doing, but there is a
- 21:51Speaker 4: disconnect with my body.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Any suggestions, Well, I wonder if anyone else out there
- 21:56Speaker 2: has that same problem. You know what, Nick, I think
- 21:59Speaker 2: that's a very good question. By on that listener, and
- 22:02Speaker 2: I hope they're listening today because you know, a lot
- 22:04Speaker 2: of people share in that. Intellectually we know what we
- 22:07Speaker 2: should be doing. A lot of people can will themselves
- 22:10Speaker 2: into good health. But if you think about it, when
- 22:13Speaker 2: you will yourself into doing it just for yourself, you're
- 22:17Speaker 2: being selfish about it, so you're not really accomplishing a
- 22:20Speaker 2: whole lot of good. But what I try to tell
- 22:22Speaker 2: people is, you know, it's God that gives us the
- 22:25Speaker 2: power to change, and everyone changes at different speeds, and
- 22:30Speaker 2: they shouldn't get down on themselves, you know, just really
- 22:33Speaker 2: focus on that relationship with God that gives us the
- 22:35Speaker 2: power to see what we need to do and to
- 22:37Speaker 2: give us the power to do it. And then once
- 22:39Speaker 2: we see that God's working with us, pick one thing
- 22:43Speaker 2: that you can do well and stick with it health wise,
- 22:46Speaker 2: you know. And it might be not eating big at night,
- 22:49Speaker 2: or cutting back on caffeine, or even cutting back on this.
- 22:53Speaker 2: And as you do one things at a time and
- 22:54Speaker 2: you stay with God, he will be faithful to help
- 22:58Speaker 2: you with the next step. And He's going to Now
- 23:00Speaker 2: we might not ever be perfect, but we will also
- 23:03Speaker 2: have the ability to change things one in time and
- 23:05Speaker 2: when we do this, we start feeling better, our chemistry
- 23:08Speaker 2: gets better, we realize that we have a God that
- 23:11Speaker 2: loves us and wants to help us. Then maybe we
- 23:13Speaker 2: won't need some of these sleeping pills we've talked about. Well,
- 23:17Speaker 2: maybe rest better. Then maybe we won't need some of
- 23:19Speaker 2: these other pills that we think we need for over
- 23:22Speaker 2: the counter things, because we're getting our chemistry back in order.
- 23:25Speaker 2: So I want to tell people, you know, if you
- 23:27Speaker 2: want to get back in the health, get back into
- 23:29Speaker 2: a relationship with the heavenly Father that gives you the power. Well,
- 23:33Speaker 2: we hope you've learned one or two, one or two
