The last time he was on our television screen was the Netflix debut 60 00:03:55,000 --> 00:03:59,000 For Monday Night Raw and he was boot out of the building 61 00:03:59,000 --> 00:04:01,000 We talked about it on the show 62 00:04:01,000 --> 00:04:05,000 Over the years a lot of things have not been said to kind about Hulk Hogan 63 00:04:05,000 --> 00:04:10,000 Some of that is based on his political beliefs 64 00:04:10,000 --> 00:04:14,000 Some of that is based on his Kocha Verses from 10 years ago 65 00:04:14,000 --> 00:04:19,000 Where on a recorded camera 66 00:04:19,000 --> 00:04:21,000 I think it was or something he was using 67 00:04:21,000 --> 00:04:25,000 DragoTrey language, racist language 68 00:04:25,000 --> 00:04:34,000 But when you think about the impact Hulk Hogan had on the world of professional wrestling 69 00:04:34,000 --> 00:04:37,000 Certainly not a perfect person at all 70 00:04:37,000 --> 00:04:42,000 We're moreseful, apologetic over his mistakes in the past 71 00:04:42,000 --> 00:04:46,000 Political affiliations I really don't give a shit about 72 00:04:46,000 --> 00:04:51,000 I think this day and age where people are like when I grew up 73 00:04:51,000 --> 00:04:53,000 I didn't care who you voted for 74 00:04:53,000 --> 00:04:55,000 I still don't care who you voted for today 75 00:04:55,000 --> 00:04:57,000 It's people's prerogatives 76 00:04:57,000 --> 00:05:00,000 Whatever they feel is right politically 77 00:05:00,000 --> 00:05:02,000 Those are one of those things 78 00:05:02,000 --> 00:05:05,000 About who he supported, but honestly 79 00:05:05,000 --> 00:05:08,000 But Hulk Hogan, the professional wrestler 80 00:05:08,000 --> 00:05:13,000 I don't think that there is anyone else in the industry, Dr.Trey 81 00:05:13,000 --> 00:05:18,000 That will have or has had a bigger impact on the game of fresh wrestling 82 00:05:18,000 --> 00:05:21,000 As much as Hulk Hogan has had 83 00:05:21,000 --> 00:05:25,000 No, I mean he changed the course of wrestling in a lot of ways 84 00:05:25,000 --> 00:05:29,000 I mean, you know up until Hulk Hogan in Vince McMahon 85 00:05:29,000 --> 00:05:32,000 The wrestling was very territorial 86 00:05:32,000 --> 00:05:34,000 I mean you had your stalwart 87 00:05:34,000 --> 00:05:37,000 You had your Luthez in the '50s and '60s 88 00:05:37,000 --> 00:05:43,000 You had Bruno Sam Martino through the late '60s and all the '70s and into the early '80s 89 00:05:43,000 --> 00:05:45,000 Then you had Hulk Hogan 90 00:05:45,000 --> 00:05:48,000 Like there's a direct lineage on how wrestling was built 91 00:05:48,000 --> 00:05:51,000 And then when Hogan came on the scene 92 00:05:51,000 --> 00:05:55,000 And got the promotional prowess of Vince McMahon behind him 93 00:05:55,000 --> 00:06:00,000 All wrestling shifts completely and you know not only did he change 94 00:06:00,000 --> 00:06:08,000 I mean people were using theme songs rock music a little bit before Hogan came on the scene 95 00:06:08,000 --> 00:06:12,000 But I have the tiger and then real American became synonymous 96 00:06:12,000 --> 00:06:15,000 And I said everybody had theme music 97 00:06:15,000 --> 00:06:20,000 You know you saw the Hogan promos and then that translate over into a world of like boxing 98 00:06:20,000 --> 00:06:23,000 And nowadays you mentioned politics 99 00:06:23,000 --> 00:06:26,000 Politics is a lot of it is cutting promos 100 00:06:26,000 --> 00:06:33,000 You know and that was all really from Hulk Hogan changing how all that stuff was 101 00:06:33,000 --> 00:06:38,000 You know for all the love that people have for professional wrestling right now 102 00:06:38,000 --> 00:06:45,000 It's a lot of it has delineated down from what Hogan did in the early '80s 103 00:06:45,000 --> 00:06:50,000 To the launch of WrestleMania to building entire marketing brands 104 00:06:50,000 --> 00:06:55,000 I mean one of the few guys who early on had his own name Trademark 105 00:06:55,000 --> 00:07:00,000 And Trademark's by a completely different company than WWE 106 00:07:00,000 --> 00:07:02,000 Which is why he was able to hold on to it for so long 107 00:07:02,000 --> 00:07:06,000 Like it's for anybody who loves wrestling 108 00:07:06,000 --> 00:07:08,000 Whether you liked Hulk Hogan or not 109 00:07:08,000 --> 00:07:11,000 The reason you love professional wrestling 110 00:07:11,000 --> 00:07:15,000 Pretty much comes from Hulk Hogan 111 00:07:15,000 --> 00:07:17,000 Whether you loved them or hated it 112 00:07:17,000 --> 00:07:24,000 Oh yeah 100% I mean like when I'm gonna talk to my dad when I'm gonna talk to my grandparents 113 00:07:24,000 --> 00:07:27,000 Professional wrestling pre-Hogan was 114 00:07:27,000 --> 00:07:30,000 Even my father a lot today 115 00:07:30,000 --> 00:07:36,000 You would be at home watching on Channel 11 in the Northeast 116 00:07:36,000 --> 00:07:39,000 And you'd be watching Bruno San Martino 117 00:07:39,000 --> 00:07:46,000 When Vince McMahon Jr. took over the reins from Vince McMahon Senior in the early '80s 118 00:07:46,000 --> 00:07:50,000 He knew that he needed to catapult the industry into the next stratosphere 119 00:07:50,000 --> 00:07:54,000 Or it would just never really prosper as an industry 120 00:07:54,000 --> 00:07:58,000 And that person that he had picked was Hulk Hogan 121 00:07:58,000 --> 00:08:01,000 Hogan helped usher in the rock and wrestling era 122 00:08:01,000 --> 00:08:04,000 Helped usher in the WrestleMania era 123 00:08:04,000 --> 00:08:08,000 I mean pop culture him in the '80s 124 00:08:08,000 --> 00:08:14,000 I don't know if there was anyone as big as a real life superhero 125 00:08:14,000 --> 00:08:17,000 As Hulk Hogan was 126 00:08:17,000 --> 00:08:21,000 That era there from '85 to when he left WWE in '94 127 00:08:21,000 --> 00:08:24,000 And then carrying it over in WCW Dr. Dre 128 00:08:24,000 --> 00:08:28,000 I don't think there's the phrase superstars 129 00:08:28,000 --> 00:08:30,000 I don't think there's the phrase WrestleMania 130 00:08:30,000 --> 00:08:34,000 I don't think WrestleMania is a thing 131 00:08:34,000 --> 00:08:41,000 There are reports out there that Vince McMahon and family put all their money into WrestleMania 132 00:08:41,000 --> 00:08:46,000 And that was on the partial back of the popularity of Hulk Hogan 133 00:08:46,000 --> 00:08:50,000 All that stuff in the mid '80s where we are today 134 00:08:50,000 --> 00:08:53,000 Multiple wrestling companies being on television 135 00:08:53,000 --> 00:08:56,000 I don't think it happens without Hogan 136 00:08:56,000 --> 00:08:58,000 I know he is not the only one 137 00:08:58,000 --> 00:09:01,000 And please do not get me wrong in saying this 138 00:09:01,000 --> 00:09:06,000 I mean if it wasn't for Macho Man or the catalyst to Hogan in Roddy Piper 139 00:09:06,000 --> 00:09:11,000 It wasn't for Rick Flair and Dusty Rhodes in the NWA era 140 00:09:11,000 --> 00:09:14,000 We're not all on this thing but with all due respect to all those people 141 00:09:14,000 --> 00:09:20,000 I truly believe that we would not have taken a step forward as an industry as professional wrestling 142 00:09:20,000 --> 00:09:25,000 If it wasn't for the personality of Hulk Hogan in the mid '80s 143 00:09:25,000 --> 00:09:32,000 I saw it because I'm sure you've been on social media today since the announced we came on 144 00:09:32,000 --> 00:09:37,000 And it's been pretty mixed a lot of ways 145 00:09:37,000 --> 00:09:43,000 I saw somebody say that if there was no Hogan somebody else would have taken his place 146 00:09:43,000 --> 00:09:46,000 And to a degree I think that is correct 147 00:09:46,000 --> 00:09:56,000 But I don't think somebody really characterized what professional wrestling was more so than Hogan 148 00:09:56,000 --> 00:09:59,000 Like you mentioned Flair and Dusty, well guess what? 149 00:09:59,000 --> 00:10:03,000 Guys were on the scene and main eventers before Hogan came on the scene 150 00:10:03,000 --> 00:10:08,000 You had Andre the Giant who was a larger than life attraction 151 00:10:08,000 --> 00:10:13,000 Traveling the world making money but nothing really catapulted 152 00:10:13,000 --> 00:10:19,000 Or nothing really grabbed the spirit of what professional wrestling was then 153 00:10:19,000 --> 00:10:22,000 Like a Hulk Hogan, a guy who was 6'7" 154 00:10:22,000 --> 00:10:25,000 6'8" larger than most human beings 155 00:10:25,000 --> 00:10:30,000 And with an impressive physique, he had the blonde air, he had the tan 156 00:10:30,000 --> 00:10:35,000 Like he was literally the epitome of what a professional wrestler should look like 157 00:10:35,000 --> 00:10:39,000 And then when you come out and you got the stars as stripes behind you 158 00:10:39,000 --> 00:10:42,000 You're telling kids, say your prayers, take your vitamins 159 00:10:42,000 --> 00:10:46,000 All those things that are morally good 160 00:10:46,000 --> 00:10:51,000 That's why parents then also push their kids to watch Hulk Hogan 161 00:10:51,000 --> 00:10:57,000 Like there was nobody else like him that really encapsulated what America was 162 00:10:57,000 --> 00:11:01,000 And those early to mid 80s like the Hulk Hogan character 163 00:11:01,000 --> 00:11:05,000 Now we talk about the difference between Hulk Hogan and Terry 164 00:11:05,000 --> 00:11:09,000 But those are two of the things but for wrestling fandom 165 00:11:09,000 --> 00:11:13,000 Like if you're telling me now you're like, oh, I grew up because I'm a Shawn Michaels fan 166 00:11:13,000 --> 00:11:19,000 Okay, well Shawn Michaels got launched really survivor series as part of the Ultimate Warriors 167 00:11:19,000 --> 00:11:22,000 The Rockers and the Ultimate Warriors came around because of Hulk Hogan 168 00:11:22,000 --> 00:11:26,000 Like these are all line up like I'm a fan of Brett Hart 169 00:11:26,000 --> 00:11:31,000 Well, Brett Hart, a lot of that also came from that era of the early 80s wrestling 170 00:11:31,000 --> 00:11:36,000 And that's when he started getting popular because people would tune into see Hogan 171 00:11:36,000 --> 00:11:39,000 And then find people that they could identify with more 172 00:11:39,000 --> 00:11:43,000 So all of this fandom, you know, you have the Rick Flair 173 00:11:43,000 --> 00:11:46,000 Rick Flair became more popular because of Hulk Hogan 174 00:11:46,000 --> 00:11:52,000 Because people that would watch WWE and go or WWE have like this isn't my style of professional wrestling 175 00:11:52,000 --> 00:11:58,000 Would flip over to NWA WCW and capture that would capture their attention 176 00:11:58,000 --> 00:12:04,000 So for me like you look at it like everything that we've had for the last 40 years 177 00:12:04,000 --> 00:12:08,000 Really comes from the Hulk Hogan influence on professional wrestling 178 00:12:08,000 --> 00:12:11,000 Yeah, larger than life personality 179 00:12:11,000 --> 00:12:18,000 I know again with him in kind of the last 10-15 years of his life again very complex individual 180 00:12:18,000 --> 00:12:22,000 People definitely have an opinion of him one way or another 181 00:12:22,000 --> 00:12:28,000 And I think focusing on the wrestling personality it's unmatched 182 00:12:28,000 --> 00:12:33,000 Whether you like Demar Hadam, we're not here today 183 00:12:33,000 --> 00:12:38,000 Without his contribution's professional wrestling and what he was able to do 184 00:12:38,000 --> 00:12:48,000 Truly, I've seen a lot of people say this and I said it just now it's like larger than life personality 185 00:12:48,000 --> 00:12:53,000 He is in the fabric of Americana in several different decades 186 00:12:53,000 --> 00:13:00,000 And what he was able to do and change and stuff like that is incredible 187 00:13:00,000 --> 00:13:06,000 I mean he had a good pulse on of course obviously there's other creative contributors 188 00:13:06,000 --> 00:13:10,000 In regards to this whether it be Vincent Mann or Eric Bischoff as well 189 00:13:10,000 --> 00:13:14,000 In the 80s he struck a chord of having that American hero 190 00:13:14,000 --> 00:13:21,000 It may not resonate today but 30-40 years ago having somebody that would stand up to Russians 191 00:13:21,000 --> 00:13:26,000 And somebody to stand up to Soviet Union and tell their children to say your prayers and each of vitamins 192 00:13:26,000 --> 00:13:30,000 It may not be sent today in 2025 and I understand that 193 00:13:30,000 --> 00:13:33,000 But it struck a chord back then in the 80s 194 00:13:33,000 --> 00:13:39,000 In the mid 90s when people were revolting and going against characters like Hulk Ogan 195 00:13:39,000 --> 00:13:43,000 And you had a counter-culture taking place 196 00:13:43,000 --> 00:13:49,000 He shifted towards the NWO Hollywood Hulk Ogan character of Hulk Ogan 197 00:13:49,000 --> 00:13:56,000 And what the cool thing is about him Dr. Trey and the impact he had in professional wrestling 198 00:13:56,000 --> 00:14:04,000 I think if you do a top 5 list of the greatest baby faces of all time and the greatest heels of all time 199 00:14:04,000 --> 00:14:12,000 I think 85 to 94 Hulk Ogan is one of the greatest baby faces 200 00:14:12,000 --> 00:14:15,000 If not the greatest baby face of all time 201 00:14:15,000 --> 00:14:21,000 I think 96 to 2,099 whenever the NWO ended 202 00:14:21,000 --> 00:14:29,000 Hollywood Hulk Ogan, the NWO Hulk Ogan is one of the greatest heels of all time 203 00:14:29,000 --> 00:14:32,000 I don't think that's much of an argument 204 00:14:32,000 --> 00:14:37,000 I mean he was able to do so much with his character 205 00:14:37,000 --> 00:14:40,000 Was he my type of professional wrestler in the ring? 206 00:14:40,000 --> 00:14:45,000 No, I'm a guy who was a Bret Hart, Sean Michaels type fan 207 00:14:45,000 --> 00:14:52,000 But what he did as a character, I think he is top 5 baby face top 5 heel of all time Dr. Trey 208 00:14:52,000 --> 00:14:58,000 Yeah, I would say top 2 baby face of all time 209 00:14:58,000 --> 00:15:01,000 It just kind of depends on the air, it's either him or Stone Cold 210 00:15:01,000 --> 00:15:09,000 That's to me the top 2 baby faces of all time and it kind of depends on the era of wrestling you grew up in 211 00:15:09,000 --> 00:15:19,000 Heels, I probably put him in like 3 through 5, you know, piper flare and then kind of pick after that would be my list 212 00:15:19,000 --> 00:15:27,000 But yeah, like the ability to, and this is something like he wanted to turn heel way before the NWO stuff came about 213 00:15:27,000 --> 00:15:33,000 But wasn't allowed to do so on Vince's watch and it just kind of came down to necessity 214 00:15:33,000 --> 00:15:41,000 Like what can we do to get the attention of the audience and he ran with it and embraced it 215 00:15:41,000 --> 00:15:48,000 So I mean in a lot of ways, you know, bash at the beach, you know, when he turned heel for guys like you and me 216 00:15:48,000 --> 00:15:53,000 That was the same thing as John Cena turning heel on Cody Rhodes in the mission chamber 217 00:15:53,000 --> 00:15:58,000 Like you just didn't expect it to happen at that point in their careers 218 00:15:58,000 --> 00:16:04,000 And then Hogan embraced it, he ran with it, like he changed his fighting style 219 00:16:04,000 --> 00:16:11,000 I mean this was a guy that, you know, no sold and would hold up and he never saw a cheat and then all of a sudden you're seeing him gouging the eyes 220 00:16:11,000 --> 00:16:17,000 And doing all the dastardly stuff that, you know, he kind of learned under Rick Flair in a lot of ways 221 00:16:17,000 --> 00:16:26,000 Like it was a complete 180 and he was so hated and reviled when that first turn happened at the beach 222 00:16:26,000 --> 00:16:34,000 I'm sure you remember, like people were legitimately pissed, I mean you go back obviously you go back and watch that night all the trash being thrown in the ring 223 00:16:34,000 --> 00:16:38,000 That wasn't just a one night thing, that happened for months 224 00:16:38,000 --> 00:16:40,000 Years afterwards, yeah 225 00:16:40,000 --> 00:16:54,000 You know, and it just became down to like were you the counterculture antihero which made the NWO cool but for you know people of my dad's generation that grew up like encouraging their kids to watch Hul Kogan 226 00:16:54,000 --> 00:17:05,000 And follow his moral compass as a wrestler to then turn evil like you pissed off like an entire generation 227 00:17:05,000 --> 00:17:15,000 Much like we're singing today with the John C. stuff so it's it was an incredible career like it's weird like we throw around phrases like the goat 228 00:17:15,000 --> 00:17:24,000 You know icons, you know things like that and in a lot of ways now it kind of puts in perspective like you're absolutely right earlier which you said 229 00:17:24,000 --> 00:17:31,000 There's not a person your age and up who doesn't know who hold the name Hul Kogan 230 00:17:31,000 --> 00:17:38,000 Like I could go to my great-grandmother's house right now who's she's 73 if I was like you know tell me about Hul Kogan 231 00:17:38,000 --> 00:17:48,000 Tell me oh he was a pro wrestler and I saw him in movies like everybody knows I don't outside of maybe the rock and maybe to a slightly less degree stone cold Steve Austin 232 00:17:48,000 --> 00:17:57,000 There's nobody else in our lifetime from professional wrestling that has had the crossover pop appeal that Hul Kogan had 233 00:17:57,000 --> 00:18:07,000 No, no, not at all and not only that but I mean from that vein he opened the doors for the rocks of the world 234 00:18:07,000 --> 00:18:17,000 The Dave Batista's of the world like they were not considering hiring professional wrestlers for movies until Hulk Ogan was thunder lips and Rocky 235 00:18:17,000 --> 00:18:24,000 And then what he started doing his own movies in the early 90s there thunder and paradise the television show 236 00:18:24,000 --> 00:18:33,000 Was it like suburban commando mr. nanny I think were some of them was he as successful as the rock and Dave Batista hell no he'll tell you that 237 00:18:33,000 --> 00:18:43,000 But I mean I don't think that those guys get looks if it wasn't for what Hogan did I mean Hogan opened so many doors in professional wrestling and outside of profession of wrestling that 238 00:18:43,000 --> 00:18:50,000 I think these are things that are gonna be coming out over the next week or two as people think about like the impact of Hulk Ogan 239 00:18:50,000 --> 00:19:02,000 And how much he resonated with people and how much he resonated in pop culture it's he's truly one of a kind 240 00:19:02,000 --> 00:19:04,000 You got to remember being out of it. 241 00:19:04,000 --> 00:19:16,000 I was saying did not interrupt you but you gotta remember like for guys like us it's a little different now for the current generation wrestling fans but for guys like us 242 00:19:16,000 --> 00:19:23,000 We had to hide our wrestling fandom because we were kind of looked down upon for being pro wrestling you know fans 243 00:19:23,000 --> 00:19:51,000 But the wrestlers were to like you didn't get auditioned you didn't get a chance you were looked down as like I mean you were below the like when it comes to the acting scale you were below minds and disney land princesses on the scale of acting like that you just didn't get opportunities like that and it wasn't until like guys like Hogan's like and he was the one that kind of open the door a lot of ways but Hogan 244 00:19:51,000 --> 00:20:07,000 And Jesse Ventura and Roddy Piper like their performances in movies kind of open the door for other people to get involved and go hey these guys aren't so bad I mean they in a lot of ways wrestlers were looked at like soap opera actors 245 00:20:07,000 --> 00:20:14,000 And there's not a lot of soap opera actors that got big breaks you were kind of tight pass oh you're a soap actor oh you're a wrestler 246 00:20:14,000 --> 00:20:43,000 That generation right there Hogan Ventura and Piper showed Hollywood that hey these guys can do other stuff and because they're so much larger than life people will watch them in action movies or things like that and oh they have comedic chops as well and it opened that door for the scene of Batista rocks of the world even stone called to jump into the acting or a big show like to jump into that world and actually make a you know 247 00:20:43,000 --> 00:20:59,000 Either either a good living or at least a lot of extra money from that world yeah it's um yeah it's it's amazing like what he was was able to accomplish and what he did in his career truly one of a kind 248 00:20:59,000 --> 00:21:05,000 You know again I keep saying enough there it's like just larger than life personality was all Kogan 249 00:21:05,000 --> 00:21:21,000 Um Dr. Trey while he may not have been known for five star matches he certainly had iconic matches in moments um throughout his career some that stand out to me Hogan versus Andre WrestleMania 3 in Silver Dome Pontiac Silver Dome 250 00:21:21,000 --> 00:21:35,000 Uh that was another step up for professional wrestling when when that match took place Hogan versus Savage WrestleMania 5 was an iconic match Hogan versus the rock WrestleMania 18 251 00:21:35,000 --> 00:21:50,000 Uh I was so hyped for that as a kid uh time and time again I tell the story I watched that match at WWE headquarters in Stanford Connecticut watch WrestleMania live for that I was amped up for that because I never thought it would take place 252 00:21:50,000 --> 00:21:55,000 What are some iconic matches that stand out to you from Hulk Hogan's career? 253 00:21:55,000 --> 00:22:16,000 I mean for me like I was about eight years old when the first WrestleMania 1 happened so for me the first six WrestleMania's Hogan you know Hogan and Mr. T versus Hyper and Ornog that was iconic to me because you see on TV you see how big Mr. T was on the 18 and then you see him in a wrestling ring you're like 254 00:22:16,000 --> 00:22:25,000 that guy's not that big at all and then you know WrestleMania 2 you know Hogan and Bundy like Bundy was a monster you know Hogan Andre 255 00:22:25,000 --> 00:22:31,000 um WrestleMania 4 was Hogan was it Hogan Andre again? 256 00:22:31,000 --> 00:22:45,000 Uh 4 was did it he get removed they did have the match but it was double DQ double DQ but even that like Hogan Andre in the tournament WrestleMania 5 like you mentioned Hogan and Savage 6 Hogan and Warrior 257 00:22:45,000 --> 00:22:56,000 you know like those are all iconic matches for me like you mentioned Hogan and Rock but then I also think of like starcade 97 star could 98 Hogan and Sting 258 00:22:56,000 --> 00:23:05,000 like with Brett Hart as the referee that was supposed to be an iconic match and in a lot of ways still was Hogan and Goldberg we were just on the anniversary of that 259 00:23:05,000 --> 00:23:15,000 recently where Goldberg won the World title like you don't get Goldberg you don't get the Goldberg run unless Hogan decides to put him over because he had creative control 260 00:23:15,000 --> 00:23:32,000 you know like some like those are like the one that stand out the most me um Hogan Hogan flare was starcade 94 I believe 95 that was also one of those ones was like the first time Hogan and flare really faced off in WCW 261 00:23:32,000 --> 00:23:44,000 uh really stood out to me because that was something we were supposed to get in WWE and never did that was supposed to be what WrestleMania 7 I believe was supposed to be it would have been Hogan 262 00:23:44,000 --> 00:24:00,000 and Sid Justice and Macho Man and flare and that was out of WrestleMania 8 okay but I was supposed to be Hogan and flare and then they flipped in it Hogan Sid flare and savage but the first time Hogan and flare went out and WCW stands out to me 263 00:24:00,000 --> 00:24:11,000 because I never thought I would see that on television and that was literally the two biggest stars of the 80s colliding in WCW of all polices 264 00:24:11,000 --> 00:24:29,000 I was just taking a look at Dr. Tray and the impact of Hogan in his career so you mentioned before Hogan and Andre they had a match in February 5th, 1988 265 00:24:29,000 --> 00:24:45,000 and it was where they had Saturday and Sunday event and they had Ted D. B. Austin paid the other uh Erl Habners, yep the Habners Twins paid for somebody to get plastic surgery was a story and stuff like that 266 00:24:45,000 --> 00:24:58,000 and it was the highest television viewership of all time for a wrestling match and I'm trying to find it as I'm saying it to you but I believe okay so the match drew a 15.2 Nielsen rating at 33 million viewers 267 00:24:58,000 --> 00:25:10,000 making it the most watch wrestling match in American history it's a record that still stands today for context raw on July 14th through about 2.5 million global viewers in its first seven days 268 00:25:10,000 --> 00:25:20,000 though I think the word on that is back then they figured like a third of televisions in the United States were watching the match that night 269 00:25:20,000 --> 00:25:33,000 that's insane when you think about that. It drew if I'm not mistaken it out drew every college football game like the Rose Bowl Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, it out of your all college football 270 00:25:33,000 --> 00:25:45,000 the only thing that beat it that year that was quarter-court sports related was Super the Super Bowl in 88 which was I think reds or Giants Broncos or Redskins Broncos 271 00:25:45,000 --> 00:26:03,000 so I mean and even that I think only got like a 22 like a 22 rating which is still crazy I even look at this if it drew a 15 point you know two rating that is the equivalent of what raw and nitro were drawing in their heyday combined 272 00:26:03,000 --> 00:26:13,000 yeah because they were usually drawing eights and seven so you take both shows on a Monday night it took it took both shows equal with that show drew 273 00:26:13,000 --> 00:26:28,000 it's insane that happened and we will never see that again no matter what folks 33 million people are not going to be tuning in for live television at eight o'clock on Saturday night to watch a professional wrestling or any night 274 00:26:28,000 --> 00:26:40,000 that will never happen again has it happened since 1988 happened because it was hogan and Andre leading into wrestling for that year and that match spawned the tournament that later took place 275 00:26:40,000 --> 00:27:00,000 some amazing errors that he had doctor trade we've really talked about the WF error I think the NWO WCW era is just as impactful the he'll turn a batch of beach 96 that is always referred back to we fred back to it five months ago as you pointed out when Johnson in a turn he'll he reinvented himself for that period of time for me NWO 276 00:27:00,000 --> 00:27:15,000 and because of him in the success of the NWO there was the Monday night wars in WCW was successful from 96 to about 2001 before they went on a business I mean this was a highly profitable company to feed WEE for 83 weeks 277 00:27:15,000 --> 00:27:35,000 we that's because of him right I mean that's you were able to have haul a Nash come over I think all Nash and hogan was a perfect trio pairing in the NWO was stars aligning but hogan turn and heal hogan you know the WCW 278 00:27:35,000 --> 00:27:52,000 the WCW lasted longer because of hogan I mean that error for him is was phenomenal and just as impactful and he did it 10 years later from when he made another you know from an initial impact from Hulk a man in the WrestleMania in the rock and wrestling error that he had started out at 279 00:27:52,000 --> 00:28:16,000 yeah and you can in once again if you if you're a fan of the generation X there's no DX without the NWO and if there's no DX is there a heart foundation if there's no heart foundation is there a nation of domination so you can spin this down like the what he ushered in like hogan in 85 does not 280 00:28:16,000 --> 00:28:31,000 if you don't get that hogan you don't get macho man or rotti pipe from the levels that they're you know you don't get Rick flair coming to wf because wf without whole cogan wouldn't have the money to bring in a guy like Rick flair 281 00:28:31,000 --> 00:29:00,000 so like it all kind of spins out and you know talking about you know reinvention you go that year after WrestleMania 18 when he came back in the red and yellow like hogan helped make edge because they were tag team champions hogan help make Brock Lesnar because he put Lesnar over like there is a lot of negativity when you you know deep dive into who Terry Balea was as a man ended hogan hold certain guys down all that stuff 282 00:29:00,000 --> 00:29:17,000 but when he saw something in somebody he made there's no big show without whole cogan like and you can because he saw something in in that young man and said hey let's bring him in as Andre's son and let's have him beat me for the title in his first match 283 00:29:17,000 --> 00:29:40,000 like you don't get that stuff unless hogan gave you the stamp of approval and that stamp of approval help make a lot of stars in professional wrestling that turned into mega stars not just you know mid card guy hogan didn't care about making mid card guys I mean he tried to make Billy Kidman but you know but he was looking for guys he can make money with 284 00:29:40,000 --> 00:30:01,000 and if he saw something in you that he knew he could make money with it he was going to put a stamp of approval on you and you are off to the races so you know for all the negativity he got I mean there's a lot of people whose lives and careers are directly influenced by either the whole cogan character or what whole cogan did for that 285 00:30:01,000 --> 00:30:14,000 say the industry is is the shape that it's in nowadays and obviously other people took those batons and ran with it and developed it more and more and more but the foundation I'm it started from hogan there in 85 84 85 when 286 00:30:14,000 --> 00:30:40,200 wrestling really started to catapult itself in the fabric of America here in the United States and making itself a national phenomenon rather than something that mom and pops loved it was coast to coast north south east west everybody love professional wrestling that's all doing part to the impact and this and the you know wanting to see whole 287 00:30:40,200 --> 00:31:09,200 cogan perform a truly one of a kind performer doctor tray it's a again a very sad day for professional wrestling 71 years old is is young what is the impact what is what when we look back at Hulk Ogan and you know up until recently I think a lot of people wouldn't be saying is as many kind things that they are when we look back at the legacy a year from now five years from now 288 00:31:09,200 --> 00:31:38,200 10 years from now how do people remember Hulk Ogan I think they seem like the way we see a lot of our heroes nowadays like was he perfect no was he a flawed human being yes but there are pivotal people in every profession in the world there are people who change the course of their industry you know we talked about your man early I mentioned Babe Ruth and hang air when it comes to baseball 289 00:31:38,200 --> 00:31:53,200 you know you look at it's like Michael Jordan in basketball you look at you know Joe Montana in football like those guys changed their industry and completely revolutionized their areas 290 00:31:53,200 --> 00:32:22,200 Hogan is that guy before professional wrestling he changed what it meant to be a pro wrestler he changed what it meant to be a pro wrestling company he changed brand marketing you know all these you know you I'm sure you like you remember the history of the show there's that time when all of a sudden everybody said that they're so the so and so brand the Matt Hardy brand or everybody was a brand you don't have brands like that in wrestling without Hulk Ogan like he was a brand unto himself 291 00:32:22,200 --> 00:32:48,200 it's like anything in American history that we that we look we all George Washington the founder of our country not a perfect man Thomas Jefferson not a perfect man but they were pivotal in changing the course of history in their field and I think we look at Hogan much the same way I think he is the catalyst in the turning point in the history of professional wrestling from where it was to where it is now 292 00:32:48,200 --> 00:33:11,200 humans are flawed I feel like they were going to be talking the same way when the sick man's time is ultimately up as well not everybody has good moments they have bad moments it's I guess at the end of the day it's what did this person do to how do they make you feel what was their impact on your life at some point 293 00:33:11,200 --> 00:33:29,200 Hulk Ogan made a positive impact on your life your wrestling fan most of us grew up as Hulk and maniacs there was moments in time where there was joy on your screen and there were moments in time that you hooked up and freaked out just as much as he did 294 00:33:29,200 --> 00:33:40,200 he was not perfect doctor trade none of us are he made his mistakes depending on where you sit on the he owned his mistakes 295 00:33:40,200 --> 00:33:44,200 there's a human being so 296 00:33:44,200 --> 00:34:00,200 it's just a side day honestly i mean you i wanted to ask you some of the i know you can have an out like we didn't really talk about this is kind of came out of nowhere as as we record this show this just happened in the last eight hours 297 00:34:00,200 --> 00:34:05,200 how many times did you see Hulk Hogan in person 298 00:34:05,200 --> 00:34:14,200 I don't think I ever saw Hulk Hogan person and that is something it's funny you bring this up because I was thinking before the show 299 00:34:14,200 --> 00:34:17,200 like what are we going to talk about here 300 00:34:17,200 --> 00:34:27,200 the bucket one of the bucket list items I had was to see Hulk Hogan wrestling person and by the time I was old enough to like take myself to shows 301 00:34:27,200 --> 00:34:39,200 you know drive myself for whatever is time and kind of pass at that point Hogan when I was grown up my my family we didn't go to wrestling shows he wasn't at the rest of shows I was going to 302 00:34:39,200 --> 00:34:54,200 if we did go to wrestling shows the closest I ever got to be in an arena where real American was playing was an episode I by think smack down I think I went to a super show 303 00:34:54,200 --> 00:35:05,200 and it was setting up Randy Orton versus Hogan some are slam like two thousand five two thousand six and uh... they have these actors come out and play 304 00:35:05,200 --> 00:35:17,200 keeping up with the Hogan's or the hell the show was on vh1 he was doing yeah and he like Randy or like kiss the fake brook Hogan that was like the closest thing I never saw Hulk Hogan perform live 305 00:35:17,200 --> 00:35:35,200 so I've only seen him live twice uh... once was two thousand twelve I went to a taping impact or tna impact wrestling uh... down Orlando Universal Studios and Hogan was the GM 306 00:35:35,200 --> 00:35:46,200 uh... so I got to see him come out cut a promo in the ring uh... still on my favorite live shows ever gone to I remember bully Ray cussing out of a seven year old in the crowd 307 00:35:46,200 --> 00:36:03,200 I was hilarious uh... same show I got to shake hands with Christy Emmey so it crossed off a bucket list thing of actually touching a playboy playmate you know so that was off list but I thought that was super cool and then the last time I got to see him was just a few months ago 308 00:36:03,200 --> 00:36:11,200 and it was when they launched real American beer and I don't know if I told you the whole story on this or not off air I know I don't think I brought up on it on the show 309 00:36:11,200 --> 00:36:26,200 but I really wanted to take Sammy Franklin to meet Hulk Hogan so they were doing it at a twin peaks which for those of you don't know it's been peaks is kind of like the new version of what hooters was back in the day 310 00:36:26,200 --> 00:36:29,200 but uh... it's one of Sammy Franklin's favorite places 311 00:36:29,200 --> 00:36:40,200 and I honestly Jeff it actually is he loves that place um... they have really great chicken wings and french fries or chicken tenders and french fries which is his favorite dish 312 00:36:40,200 --> 00:36:53,200 but uh... we were told that he was doing kind of like a semi meet and greet at the venue and so like Sammy Franklin and I go and we're there in line and we're talking other people in the line 313 00:36:53,200 --> 00:37:05,200 and everybody's like super excited it's all a bunch of like dads and their sons and we're all about the same age and then right before he was scheduled to appear we were told that he is running late 314 00:37:05,200 --> 00:37:17,200 and he will not be able to sign anything he's literally going to be coming in to hand out some free samples of real American beer and then he was leaving to go to a different place to do the same thing 315 00:37:17,200 --> 00:37:25,200 so Sammy and I were able to get in the building see him up behind the bar passing out the beers and then they took off once in their venue 316 00:37:25,200 --> 00:37:35,200 so I was kind of upset like I really wanted him to shake hands or or like I was thinking of the influence I had as a kid when I met one of my heroes 317 00:37:35,200 --> 00:37:45,200 and so we went to the other venue and we get there and you had to be at least 18 to get in and Sammy's fake ID didn't work so we weren't allowed to get in there 318 00:37:45,200 --> 00:37:57,200 like just like that little bit of it was like I grew up I I was a I was a I was a I was a hero of mine when I was little little like seven eight nine years old but as I got into my teens 319 00:37:57,200 --> 00:38:05,200 you know I got a little more rebellious and got more into macho man and piper but Hogan was the first action figure I ever bought 320 00:38:05,200 --> 00:38:15,200 so I remember like I'm like I really wanted Sammy to see this guy up close in person I wanted to get the picture and didn't get a chance to do it 321 00:38:15,200 --> 00:38:25,200 but it just like that whole influence of remembering something from when you're a kid and then wanting to pass it on to your kid is a very very real thing 322 00:38:25,200 --> 00:38:41,200 and even though I knew personally he was flawed the character of what Hogan was in the 80s still translates to what I want to be an apparent and teaching my kid right from wrong you know hey do this do this do this 323 00:38:41,200 --> 00:38:51,200 do this work hard like all those things that we were taught as a kid in the 80s still applies to me as a parent nowadays and I wanted to kind of pass that along to Sammy and unfortunately 324 00:38:51,200 --> 00:39:01,200 what didn't get the opportunity to get the picture but those are still like those those 80s American values I still take with me and use that in my parenting nowadays 325 00:39:01,200 --> 00:39:09,200 he's the Bay-Bruth professional wrestling we said this when he was alive he sat now in his passing there will never be another 326 00:39:09,200 --> 00:39:25,200 favorite matches moments errors of Hulk Ogan Dr. Trey I'll start probably my favorite matches he and rock WrestleMania 18 love that match I actually really love WrestleMania 6 against Warrior even though he took the L on that one 327 00:39:25,200 --> 00:39:38,200 that is a really really good match and a lot of fun some of my favorite moments of Hulk Ogan is there was a period of time when he returned to the company in 2002 328 00:39:38,200 --> 00:39:52,200 WWE and they were doing these like everywhere he went he was getting like 10 minute standing innovations and there was one I want to say my time line maybe off here I think it was like July-ish 329 00:39:52,200 --> 00:40:02,200 he started doing the right in yellow again may have been actually may have been leading into no way out 2003 because I think there are on a Canadian swing there 330 00:40:02,200 --> 00:40:14,200 and he was like in Montreal and they gave him like a 11 minute standing ovation he's like crying in the ring and they left it basically in there 331 00:40:14,200 --> 00:40:24,200 because Smackdown was taped at the time and there was like a lot of I'm reading back in the day the Smackdown spoilers on one wrestling dot com or pw i pw insider 332 00:40:24,200 --> 00:40:36,200 and there was a lot of like wonder what they leave it in there that's a really cool moment that that happened I would suggest anybody's number see that go back there just type in like YouTube like Hulk Ogan standing ovation wf 333 00:40:36,200 --> 00:40:49,200 another one and it really catapulted the WWE network the streaming era of WWE and they had been going for about 6 weeks at that point and they had an NXT special live and all that stuff 334 00:40:49,200 --> 00:41:05,200 but really the first true like launching point of the WWE network was WrestleMania 30 and they opened that show with Hogan Austin and Rock and I know a lot of people they point to he called the super dumb the silver dome and it was obviously very very funny and a great moment 335 00:41:05,200 --> 00:41:15,200 but at one point I remember watching live going this may never happen again three of the most impactful superstars in the history of the WWE 336 00:41:15,200 --> 00:41:29,200 or on my television right now at WrestleMania Stone Cold Steve Austin the Rock and Hulk Ogan that stood out to me such an amazing moment in time and like one that you just spur kind of took a step back as a human being as a recipe for an go 337 00:41:29,200 --> 00:41:40,200 I'm going to appreciate this a little bit more because of what's going on live I remember doing that live and watching it on then my iPad because they were on Apple TV or Roku or anything like that 338 00:41:40,200 --> 00:41:55,200 and then lastly like favorite errors of Hogan and this is very cliche I love the 80s Hogan loved Hollywood Hogan in 97 98 99 I thought that that that error of Hulk Ogan was amazing 339 00:41:55,200 --> 00:42:02,200 those are some of my favorite Dr. Trey favorite matches and moments errors of Hulk Ogan what stands out to you 340 00:42:02,200 --> 00:42:14,200 yeah favorite favorite match for me Hogan Andre Hogan Bundy those are up there Hogan and Mr. Wonderful I think they had a couple like Saturday night made of matches 341 00:42:14,200 --> 00:42:24,200 was there one like Toronto yeah that was big event yep that was one like I mentioned Hogan Goldberg because it made Goldberg's career 342 00:42:24,200 --> 00:42:48,200 like it is still like even though it wasn't a classic match like just if you remember that day leading up to the show like if you were Goldberg guy you're like are they really going to put the belt on Goldberg like he just got the US title like are they really going to make him a double champion like that really stands out Hogan Flair I think I think it's from like 94 95 somewhere in there 343 00:42:48,200 --> 00:43:05,200 and then I'm still a big I like I mentioned earlier Hogan in edge winning the tag team belts on a Smackdown I thought was amazing because it like it helped elevate edge but seeing Hogan back in the black or the red and yellow and the fans once again 344 00:43:05,200 --> 00:43:15,200 like you mentioned like giving him a huge ovation and then feeding off that I thought that was a favorite errors of Hogan like I love I love Hollywood Hogan 345 00:43:15,200 --> 00:43:27,200 it was such like I didn't know like I guess if you knew all Kogan's like okay everybody's got a jerk at them and you let that side out but you know NWO black and white Hogan was great 346 00:43:27,200 --> 00:43:43,200 you know real American Hogan from like the early 80s up through about 89 wasn't a big fan of what 91 Hogan Summer Slam Arrow with the M and Bruce Beef Cagginess Money Hink not really fan but then I loved I loved 347 00:43:43,200 --> 00:43:59,200 you know it was weird like I love Hogan WWE 2001 with the NWO because they had to work with a lot less they weigh more restrictions on them but I still did this day remember Hogan driving the semi through the ambulance that rock was it 348 00:43:59,200 --> 00:44:08,200 that stands out to me so I give them credit for trying to make that work even being handcuffed with the injuries and everything else going on 349 00:44:08,200 --> 00:44:24,200 those are so sent out to me one of my favorite memories and moments is the Hogan Andre Piper pit because as a kid like I'm sure I have the action figures and at that time Andre was a huge baby face so like when I would put together my little wrestling shows 350 00:44:24,200 --> 00:44:36,200 like I had Andre turning on Hulk Hogan and then it was a month later that played out on TV with Andre ripping the cross off and tearing the shirt and Andre's nails were so sharp 351 00:44:36,200 --> 00:44:46,200 when he tore the shirt off it actually scratched Hogan and made him bleed on his chest and Piper selling it like it was the craziest thing he'd ever seen in his life 352 00:44:46,200 --> 00:44:48,200 you're bleeding Hogan, you're bleeding? 353 00:44:48,200 --> 00:45:04,200 yeah like all that stuff is really memorable of the stuff with you know the iron sheik and I grew up in an air where like we thought the Soviet Union was going to drop a nuclear bomb on us at any moment 354 00:45:04,200 --> 00:45:25,200 you know Hogan in a lot of ways was that calming influence that you know America's strong we're going to get through this all that stuff so those airs are really really influential on me leading me to the person I am because all I watch back in the 80s Jeff was WWF, the NFL and baseball into this day 355 00:45:25,200 --> 00:45:35,200 40 years later pretty much all I watch is wrestling baseball in the NFL so that childhood stuff lingers around you for a very very long time 356 00:45:35,200 --> 00:45:43,200 yeah and that's part of the I think the loss that a lot of people are dealing with today is again Hulk Hogan is a very complex individual 357 00:45:43,200 --> 00:45:50,200 people certainly have opinions on him but I think when you think about your childhood in the nostalgia era he played a huge role in it 358 00:45:50,200 --> 00:46:04,200 and right Ronald are indifferent you cannot forget about the impact he had in the world of professional wrestling again I don't think we are where we are today if it wasn't for him 40 years ago 359 00:46:04,200 --> 00:46:16,200 having that wrestling boom so thoughts and prayers out there to all the family friends and fans of the Hulk sir Hogan the Babe Ruth of professional wrestling 360 00:46:16,200 --> 00:46:26,200 I think it would be disingenuous of us if we went out there and did our normal plugs and sponsors with that said you guys know the drill patreon.com/srtbgast 361 00:46:26,200 --> 00:46:34,200 we're out there every Thursday Friday on real guy media, we're on that show Apple Spotify wherever you get this platform 362 00:46:34,200 --> 00:46:41,200 thank you for downloading thank you for supporting and we will be back next week with a regular show getting you ready for summer slam 363 00:46:41,200 --> 00:46:51,200 but final thoughts here doctor tray to wrap it up here on the life and career of Hulk Hogan who tragically passed away today at the age of 71 364 00:46:51,200 --> 00:47:01,200 like we said earlier like there is no perfect human being walk in the planet today no matter who you look up to no matter who you idolize no matter who you 365 00:47:01,200 --> 00:47:18,200 you know whose posters are on your wall like there is no perfect person but you always have to look at what a man has done for his family in his industry and what he's done and for the world of professional wrestling there's been no greater influence on it than Hulk Hogan 366 00:47:18,200 --> 00:47:30,200 so I appreciate everything he's done for an industry that I so passionately love I appreciate everything he's done for the professional rest there's other world 367 00:47:30,200 --> 00:47:48,200 and opening doors that otherwise may have been shut for longer than they are right now I appreciate everything he's done for his local community the people that the people and charities he's been involved with like he was a big make a wish person long before the John Cena records 368 00:47:48,200 --> 00:47:57,200 it was Hulk Hogan out there doing that stuff and he may not have been a perfect person he may have had some ideological beliefs that are different from mine 369 00:47:57,200 --> 00:48:12,200 but when it comes to looking back at the totality of a man's career in the world of professional wrestling outside of maybe this big man there has been no bigger influence on this world in Hogan so my thoughts and prayers out to his family friends 370 00:48:12,200 --> 00:48:16,200 and those of us who looked up to and appreciated what the man has done for us 371 00:48:16,200 --> 00:48:29,200 yeah the influence the impact of Hulk Hogan is unmatched the Babe Ruth the professional wrestling a larger than life personality sad day for the world of professional wrestling because of everything that he brought to the industry 372 00:48:29,200 --> 00:48:41,200 and his memory and spirit will live on in professional wrestling forever so thank you for downloading thank you for making us part of your week and until next week 373 00:48:41,200 --> 00:48:48,200 for Dr. Ray Franklin I am Jeff Pack this has been the still real does show rest in peace Hulk Hogan
