- 0:00Can a soul or the essence of an entity become trapped inside of
- 0:05an object? Could one channeling enough
- 0:08energy, dedication and Care into.
- 0:11Something allow an otherworldly presence to possess it,
- 0:16attracting Spirits, like moths to a flame.
- 0:21We have covered haunted objects here before such as Akiko the
- 0:24doll among others. But this story is to emphasis to
- 0:29not be given the time of day, and although it has been told
- 0:33many times, perhaps, you will learn a detail or two that
- 0:37you've never heard before. This is the untold story of
- 0:40Robert, the doll and the malevolent monstrosity that
- 0:44stares at the world from behind its beady, little eyes.
- 0:57At first glance, most people tend to agree that although
- 1:00dolls of All Sorts can be creepy to say the least there's
- 1:04something particularly unnerving about the doll.
- 1:07Just become known to the world as Robert but behind the initial
- 1:11feelings of unease. At first glance lies, many tales
- 1:15of accidents tragedy and Misfortune all.
- 1:19Supposedly, at Roberts hands far too many within his presence to
- 1:24just be a string of Awful coincidences.
- 1:27But if an evil force supposedly lives within the confines of
- 1:31this century-old child's toy to come to recognize and understand
- 1:35just what it could be. We must first tell its story and
- 1:39to tell Robert story properly we must first start at the very
- 1:43beginning. As with many Legends, there are
- 1:46multiple versions of the origin story and how Robert the Doll
- 1:50came to be having read through. Most, if not, all of them, I'll
- 1:54be sharing with you the most Most agreed upon origin for
- 1:57accuracy's sake and the beginning and we will explore
- 2:01other theories in origin stories later in this video, The Years
- 2:051904 and a man named Thomas Auto is on a trip in Germany, whether
- 2:11it was for business or Leisure, we can't say, but during his
- 2:15trip, he decided to pick up a gift for his young.
- 2:18Grandson's birthday to take back home with him to the states as
- 2:23he perused, various shops. Out his time there.
- 2:27He stumbled across a toy that he believed would be the perfect
- 2:30fit for the young boy. Perched on display behind a pale
- 2:34glass window. Sad a doll.
- 2:37The doll was about the size of a young child and was accompanied
- 2:40by a small dog doll as well. Knowing that his grandson was
- 2:44lonely on the large family estate and was very fond of dogs
- 2:48as well. Thomas believed he had found
- 2:51what he had been searching for and quickly purchased the toy
- 2:55and ooh time he would find his way back to the United States.
- 2:58Once his trip was over, bringing his Precious, Cargo with him,
- 3:02making his way back to the Family Estate located in Key
- 3:06West Florida, to greet his family.
- 3:09After months abroad, Thomas an act of innocence and excitement,
- 3:14gifted the toy to his grandson Eugene for his eighth birthday.
- 3:18As soon as Eugene laid eyes on the gift, he had received, he
- 3:22became ecstatic with no other children, his own age.
- 3:25Age in the home or nearby. He now for wants had his very
- 3:29own friend, his own best friend and one that could accompany him
- 3:34wherever he went sitting at around 3 feet tall with his
- 3:37little dog, Eugene named his new friend Robert but Robert of
- 3:43course, needed clothes to fit for years of Adventures to come.
- 3:47So Eugene's Mother Maria quickly found, just what he was, missing
- 3:52a small Sailors outfit that had once belonged to her son.
- 3:55But had long since been outgrown after placing, Robert and his
- 3:59new clothes, the two were off to play and soon became Inseparable
- 4:05wherever Eugene win, Robert accompanied him from hours of
- 4:09play inside and outside of the house to the dinner table and
- 4:13bedtime. His new best friend was
- 4:16everything. The young man wanted and much
- 4:19more besides constant companionship Eugene began to
- 4:23confide in the doll often. Speaking to him as if he was a
- 4:27person and his own right, his parents who were first just as
- 4:32elated as their young son, was his excitement over his new toy,
- 4:36began to grow concerned over how close their son was to the doll.
- 4:41But they would initially right off the behavior.
- 4:44As most would, since lonely children with their imaginations
- 4:48still, very much active will typically invent imaginary
- 4:51friends or adventurous stories to fill the void.
- 4:55Void or lack of friends and real adventures with in their daily
- 5:00lives. But over the months, since
- 5:02Robert had arrived, they noticed a bizarre shift in Eugene's
- 5:06personality. He began to grow extremely
- 5:09possessive and obsessive over Robert would lash out at his
- 5:13parents. Sometimes violently if the doll
- 5:16was not in his sight at all times, it would soon appear that
- 5:21Eugene's obsession with his cloth companion and shift in
- 5:25Behavior. Easier wasn't the only strange
- 5:27activity that was taking place. One night as she tucked her son
- 5:32into bed Maria overheard Eugene whispering to Robert.
- 5:36Something that at this point had become a daily occurrence but as
- 5:40she closed the door to his room and began to walk away, she
- 5:45heard a deep guttural voice respond to her son, shocked and
- 5:50terrified. She rushed back into her son's
- 5:53room only to find him. Playing with the doll as per
- 5:57usual, when she asked him, just who was speaking.
- 6:01He simply answered Robert, this scary happening wouldn't be the
- 6:07last about a year into Robert, the Doll inhabiting, their Key
- 6:11West, to Stave the Autos noticed yet another shift and their
- 6:16son's Behavior. But this time, it was almost the
- 6:19exact opposite of what the initial shifted been Eugene, had
- 6:24gone from a quiet And shy, but Charming young man, to a
- 6:28belligerent angry and possessive boy.
- 6:31But now he had become one that was Meek full of anxiety.
- 6:36And constantly seemed like he was walking on eggshells.
- 6:40He had now also taken to Violent fits on occasion, as if
- 6:45something was trying to overtake his body and soul, the guttural
- 6:51voice. That Maria had heard a year ago,
- 6:53could be heard much more. Frequently now and just as
- 6:57frequently almost nightly it became commonplace to hear what
- 7:02sounded like glass breaking and constant commotion, coming from
- 7:06Eugene's room upon hearing the turmoil.
- 7:10His parents would rush to discover the source upon opening
- 7:14their sons door. They would find his furniture
- 7:17dumped upside down. Other toys of his would be
- 7:21smashed her in pieces and Eugene would Must always be in the
- 7:26corner of the room in his bed petrified.
- 7:31While Robert, the Doll would be in his usual space nearby upon
- 7:37asking just what had happened. They would be met with an
- 7:40all-too-familiar answer this point they would ask just who
- 7:44did this Eugene and his answer would always be Robert, noticing
- 7:51the activity becoming more and more intense and being a
- 7:55God-fearing woman herself. Maria was deeply disturbed by
- 7:59what was taking place in her home and what was taking place
- 8:02to her family? Particularly her son, besides
- 8:07the nightly Terror? That now, plugged them, she was
- 8:10very much disturbed by this guttural voice that she kept
- 8:13hearing knowing that her son had not yet matured.
- 8:17She knew that there was no way, his voice could reach that deep
- 8:20level of tonality and Malice. And she often heard At times the
- 8:26voice would even shout and speak over Eugene.
- 8:30And unless he was exceptionally good of ventriloquism, something
- 8:34was horrific lie. Wrong it was if the Devil
- 8:37Himself now occupied the walls of their home like a stain or
- 8:42liquid. The presence had slowly seeped
- 8:45in and permeated throughout their lives.
- 8:50One night as per usual, the family settles down to sleep.
- 8:55As the clouds spiral and the moon.
- 8:58No haunts. The sky above them.
- 9:00Gleaming down overhead. The family's peace is Shattered
- 9:05by the horrific screams of their son and The Echoes of the sounds
- 9:10of things. Being broken, wide-eyed and
- 9:13terrified. Eugene's parents rushed to their
- 9:16sons Aid Lantern and hand. The closer they get to his room,
- 9:22the louder, the low and horrible voice becomes Yes.
- 9:26And the louder, the screams of Eugene become as well.
- 9:30The deep voice that have been growing louder suddenly was
- 9:34silent like the winter snow as hands.
- 9:37Touch the doorknob quickly overcoming Their Fear for the
- 9:41sake of their bully. The couple throw the door open
- 9:44to find their son huddled underneath.
- 9:46His sheets, his room was almost completely destroyed.
- 9:51Most of his belongings were in pieces or Tad.
- 9:55There's from what was left of his toys to his furniture to
- 10:00even his clothes, poor Eugene was shaking in the corner of his
- 10:04room, opposite is bed and Robber, along with his Beady,
- 10:09eyed companion or in his bed staring at the mall silently.
- 10:15By this point, Maria knew that whatever Robert was or whatever
- 10:20inhabited him was truly evil, but unsure of how to handle the
- 10:25Action or what? Exactly, they were dealing with
- 10:28and a fit of rage. She grabbed the doll and rushed
- 10:32to the attic casting robber, and his Canine Companion, into the
- 10:37darkness Above. This would remain his home until
- 10:40a better idea presented itself. As to what to do with him.
- 10:45The low groans and screams and breaking ceased and Eugene's
- 10:50room. But would frequently be heard in
- 10:53the Attic with Such a large estate to care for the family.
- 10:58Did have a team of servants to care for the property, but
- 11:02they're loyal crew, having experienced the strangeness
- 11:05themselves up and quit the servants soon.
- 11:10Became a revolving door with new faces.
- 11:13Almost always come in and going just as quickly as they started,
- 11:18despite his banishment to the attic.
- 11:20Alongside the occasional crashing sounds and yelling, the
- 11:24family said, That they would also hear Robert walking around
- 11:28the pitter-patter of his small feat.
- 11:30Often being heard echoing all throughout the house, especially
- 11:35at night, when he seemed to truly come alive.
- 11:39So to speak as the years passed and despite all of the childhood
- 11:44trauma and fear inflicted on him by the Demonic doll, unbeknownst
- 11:49to any rational mind after his parents.
- 11:52Passing Eugene would choose to take Robert Back into his
- 11:56possession as an adult, perhaps he did this to ensure that.
- 12:01Robert wouldn't inflict Terror upon anyone else.
- 12:04Maybe he felt like he had the most experience dealing with him
- 12:08and therefore he was the most equipped to handle anything that
- 12:11could possibly happen as a result of his presence Eugene.
- 12:15And his adult years became an artist and would later, marry
- 12:19and have a family of his own. He kept Robert propped up in the
- 12:23window of his Art Studio. Known as the turret room, which
- 12:27overlooked his front yard. And then Eugene's wife was said
- 12:32to disapprove of Roberts presence in the house and
- 12:35demanded, that he be gotten rid of her banished into the attic
- 12:39or basement, for a short time, this took place but naturally,
- 12:44Robert didn't take kindly to this and apparently began to
- 12:48make threats towards her by visiting her and her dreams and
- 12:53verbally telling you Gene that if Is not moved back, horrible
- 12:57things would happen to his family.
- 13:00So eventually robber was placed back in the torture room.
- 13:04Aside from this, I couldn't find any additional information on
- 13:08the happenings that took place. During those years inside the
- 13:11home, I would hope. And imagine that perhaps Robert
- 13:14had gone dormant during this time, especially since Eugene
- 13:18did eventually have children of his own and hopefully didn't
- 13:21allow them to be compromised by having such a thing in the The
- 13:25house there were however, reports of passerbys school
- 13:30children and neighbors, feeling a strange presence when passing
- 13:33by the house on a daily basis. Others would say that they could
- 13:37see Robert move but in the blink of an eye, he would be back to
- 13:42where he was sitting Eugene, Otto will continue to spend the
- 13:45rest of his life painting in the torture room with Robert, the
- 13:48Doll until his death in 1974, however, this bizarre Legend
- 13:54does not Stop with his death upon Eugene's passing his
- 13:59family. Sold the house to a woman named
- 14:01Myrtle, reuter. Upon moving into the home.
- 14:05She noticed, sitting in the window of the term.
- 14:08Room was a small doll with a sailor's uniform.
- 14:13She thought this to be strange since the auto family had not
- 14:16left any other belongings behind when they had moved.
- 14:20But regardless she decided to keep it.
- 14:24Myrtle soon began to realize that there was something
- 14:26different about this tall upon housecleaning.
- 14:30She would typically notice that he moved around the room
- 14:34seemingly by himself at night. She would hear what she
- 14:39described as small footsteps all throughout the house.
- 14:44Guess who would visit her claim to that?
- 14:46Robert would move of his own volition, that his blank
- 14:50expression would change to one of Rage.
- 14:53If Anyone discussed him in a negative way.
- 14:56Myrtle would eventually reach out and speak with the Widow to
- 14:59net Auto, who would confirm her worst fears that something
- 15:04otherworldly inhabited? Robert, the Doll after dealing
- 15:08with his Antics for years. She finally decided to reach out
- 15:12to a local Museum and would donate Robert in 1994 to the for
- 15:18East martello Museum in Key West, Florida, where he remains
- 15:22today, But as with each previous relocation, his story does not
- 15:28end here. Either placed inside his own
- 15:30glass display for the public to see him each and every day.
- 15:35One would think that, perhaps Roberts Antics would cease.
- 15:38He was, of course, a natural source of curiosity would be
- 15:42seen and admired by many people daily, but you would be very
- 15:46wrong. Staff at the Museum of claim to
- 15:50find Robert in various positions within his case, as if he was
- 15:54attempting to break out of it or had been out of it prior and had
- 15:58just re-entered in the Phantom. Footsteps, has previously
- 16:02claimed by all three families has also been reported as well
- 16:07as the dolls expression. Changing from neutral to nasty
- 16:11in an instant. The afflictions first started
- 16:15with the staff themselves. From horrible, bouts of rare
- 16:19diseases to relationship, breakdowns, and marriage
- 16:24failures, as well as unique instances of psychosis.
- 16:29Over the years, the curse of Robert, the Doll began to take
- 16:33shape and become a well-known phenomenon, but it would soon
- 16:37spread to many others. Besides the staff themselves
- 16:41many people upon visiting Roberts exhibit finding him
- 16:46strange to say the least Just would often mock him.
- 16:50Berate him, or just laugh at his appearance.
- 16:54Little did they know that they would be inviting the wrath of
- 16:57something otherworldly shortly after their visit droves of
- 17:02people began to experience shockingly, similar happenings
- 17:06to that of the staff. Varying intensity almost as if
- 17:10their punishment was being tapered to fit their crimes from
- 17:15less serious experiences. Like Paranormal Activity
- 17:19beginning in their home, horrible luck and job loss to
- 17:23name a few too much more serious experiences like exotic disease.
- 17:29Diagnosis rare, cancers relationship, disintegration and
- 17:35others car, accidents Falls, and even untimely death Eventually a
- 17:43warning would be added to Roberts exhibit, explaining the
- 17:47alleged curse, and the proper etiquette to approach him with
- 17:51whether that's to observe or take a photo as to not offend
- 17:56whoever or whatever, inhabits the doll itself over the decades
- 18:02and entire wall has been dedicated to the letters people
- 18:05have dropped off or sent the museum.
- 18:08If they weren't able to come in person, begging for Roberts.
- 18:11Forgive This hoping to end whatever horrible situation they
- 18:16found themselves in after their visit to this day.
- 18:20There are over 1,000 letters with more continuing to be added
- 18:24each and every year. But could there be more to this
- 18:28Legend? As I mentioned in the beginning
- 18:30of the video, there is another origin story that could explain
- 18:34just what inhabits the doll and how it got there.
- 18:38I will also add several elements that I found interesting
- 18:41related. Ting to the case itself, the
- 18:44alternative origin story says that a young woman of Bahamian,
- 18:48descent gave Thomas otter the doll as a retaliation for a
- 18:53misdeed as to why this would have taken place is not known
- 18:58but speculation has led many to believe that the girl or perhaps
- 19:02a relative had been a member of staff at some point or another
- 19:06at the family's keywest estate. The retaliation was that the
- 19:11doll had been imbued with Spirit that have been conjured using
- 19:14Voodoo and by trapping The Entity within the doll, making
- 19:18it its vessel it became aware of its surroundings and knew what
- 19:24it was sent there to do. Although with many details in
- 19:27this case, lots of details can't be corroborated due to the age
- 19:31of the story itself. But there are a few details that
- 19:35I managed to dig up. That are interesting.
- 19:38The doll itself appears to have been manufactured by the Steiff
- 19:41company. A German family company that was
- 19:44headed by German designer. Richard Steiff.
- 19:47The original designer of the Beloved, teddy bear, and the
- 19:50original design of the doll in particular and others that were
- 19:54similar to it. We're not designed as toys but
- 19:57rather stage props for the time. So it's hard to say, if Robert
- 20:01was ever intended as a toy in the first place, the family tree
- 20:05of the Autos, also has conflicting information in
- 20:09regards to birth and death dates as well.
- 20:12Names. But I did my best to corroborate
- 20:15this information and I'll be linking the info in the
- 20:17description below. Today, Robert continues to be on
- 20:21display and his Antics continue to persist.
- 20:26He seems to be just as powerful as he was all those years ago.
- 20:30The museum keeps a catalog record of all ailments that have
- 20:34been reported as a result of offending him for future
- 20:38reference. His reach also continues to
- 20:41expand asses as Legend grows and becomes more and more well known
- 20:45across the world. Robert, the Doll has been the
- 20:48inspiration behind many books, movies and podcasts, as well as
- 20:54a local Legend in Florida. And this lesson truly applies to
- 20:58anyone and everyone have respect.
- 21:02When you meet someone, because you never truly know who, or
- 21:06what, you could be dealing with. And please, if you find yourself
- 21:12at the East, martello Museum in Key West, Florida, and you
- 21:16happen to come into contact with the entity known as Robert, the
- 21:20doll be respectful because if you're not, you may just pay the
