- 0:00Speaker 1: Later on in the third hour of the program, we're
- 0:02Speaker 1: gonna hear from Rodney Terry Longwren men's basketball coach, But
- 0:05Speaker 1: right now we want to hear from the head coach
- 0:09Speaker 1: of the Texas women. We're gonna split it up from
- 0:11Speaker 1: his media available because there's some really good stuff in there,
- 0:13Speaker 1: and then in between that, we're also going to visit
- 0:16Speaker 1: with Greg Temper, managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 0:20Speaker 1: But let's hear from head coach Vic schaeffer'st team is
- 0:22Speaker 1: three and zero and they are also ranked fourth in
- 0:28Speaker 1: the country and they have that forty acres field trip
- 0:31Speaker 1: game tomorrow morning at eleven o'clock against Charleton State's here's
- 0:35Speaker 1: the media conversation part of it with head coach Vic Schaffer.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Obviously, tomorrow is our elementary school game day, and I
- 0:46Speaker 2: know everybody that'll be there, I'll have their earplugs in.
- 0:50Speaker 2: But we're excited to host over five thousand young kids
- 0:56Speaker 2: throughout our community and their teachers tomorrow and uh, great
- 1:01Speaker 2: opportunity for our kids too, have a chance to be
- 1:07Speaker 2: role models and be seen and uh and after the
- 1:12Speaker 2: game to meet some of those folks as well. So
- 1:16Speaker 2: gonna play a really good uh Charlton State team. Uh
- 1:21Speaker 2: well coached, you know obviously the coach somebody I'm very
- 1:26Speaker 2: familiar with and Bill Rock and uh, he's doing a
- 1:30Speaker 2: great job with that group. They're two and two and
- 1:34Speaker 2: they've they've played pretty well on the road at Arizona
- 1:38Speaker 2: and at UTEP whereas there are two losses.
- 1:40Speaker 3: And so.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Got a really good, really good team, a veteran team
- 1:45Speaker 2: of eight seniors. You know, they're they're they're a very
- 1:50Speaker 2: athletic and uh again he's he's doing, uh doing a
- 1:55Speaker 2: great job with him, and so we'll have to we'll
- 1:58Speaker 2: have to be ready, ready to play.
- 2:01Speaker 3: It's an early game.
- 2:02Speaker 2: My team will tell you, you know, my philosophy is sleepy
- 2:05Speaker 2: team loses, and so we'll we'll have to be up
- 2:09Speaker 2: and ready to go in the morning.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Five.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Any time you go against five seniors at this level,
- 2:15Speaker 2: you that's that to me is instant credibility. And then
- 2:18Speaker 2: a veteran coach like coach Brock and and so excited
- 2:24Speaker 2: for the opportunity for our kids. We played really hard
- 2:26Speaker 2: the other night, y'all. I know you didn't read about
- 2:28Speaker 2: it in the paper, but we did have a game
- 2:31Speaker 2: against the Paul Sunday, and our kids played really hard,
- 2:36Speaker 2: and UH really proud of them, and uh I thought
- 2:41Speaker 2: they they they they just competed. And for our first
- 2:46Speaker 2: road game against a quality opponent, you know, it was
- 2:51Speaker 2: it was good to see us come out and play
- 2:53Speaker 2: as hard as we did. Offensively, we shot sixty percent
- 2:57Speaker 2: in the second half. And I thought our kids made
- 3:01Speaker 2: a little jump between their last game and in that
- 3:04Speaker 2: game as far as just how hard they played. Now hard,
- 3:07Speaker 2: they competed, and we dealt with some foul trouble, and
- 3:11Speaker 2: and we're able to still handle it, and and and
- 3:17Speaker 2: and really not miss beat. So you score ninety one points,
- 3:21Speaker 2: don't make a single three pointer, and shoot fifty nine percent.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Of the free throw line, you're doing a lot of
- 3:27Speaker 3: things right.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And so I miss seeing my friend Doug Bruno on
- 3:31Speaker 2: the on the sideline, been very concerned about him.
- 3:36Speaker 3: As he's had some health issues.
- 3:38Speaker 2: But I did finally after reaching out to him for
- 3:42Speaker 2: over a month, I was able to finally visit with
- 3:45Speaker 2: him on game day Sunday via the phone, and he
- 3:50Speaker 2: sounded great, and it really brought a little peace to
- 3:54Speaker 2: me because he's not it's not that he's somebody I
- 3:57Speaker 2: talked to every day or every week. But he's somebody
- 4:00Speaker 2: I have a deep respect and high regard for. He's
- 4:04Speaker 2: somebody that's impacted our great game for many, many many years,
- 4:10Speaker 2: and he is De Paul women's basketball, and so I
- 4:14Speaker 2: was glad to know that at least through the phone,
- 4:17Speaker 2: he sounded well. And he told me he thought he'll
- 4:21Speaker 2: be back on the bench maybe in a month, but
- 4:23Speaker 2: right for right now, you had to stay away.
- 4:25Speaker 3: And so Jill's doing a great job with that team.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Again, I was very pleased coming out of there playing
- 4:32Speaker 2: as hard as we played. Again, didn't play great all
- 4:34Speaker 2: the time, but we played really hard.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Beck, you got a bunch of people playing about the
- 4:41Speaker 4: same twenty minutes so far, who's taken the opportunity maybe
- 4:46Speaker 4: to press you and you know, let you know that
- 4:49Speaker 4: they deserve some playing time.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Well, I think you know, certainly Shay has been someone
- 5:00Speaker 2: than the other night. She was three for nine and
- 5:02Speaker 2: zero for four from three before that, And again it
- 5:05Speaker 2: happened in shoot around.
- 5:06Speaker 3: She made everything she looked at.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I think I looked at Brionna Preston and went, that's
- 5:10Speaker 2: the kiss of death, because that's usually I work. You
- 5:13Speaker 2: make everything and shoot around and five hours later you can't,
- 5:17Speaker 2: you know, it's your backside with both hands. And so
- 5:22Speaker 2: she's really been making a lot of shots for us
- 5:24Speaker 2: from three.
- 5:25Speaker 3: She's been very effective.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Jordan Lee is proven, you know, don't worry about her classification.
- 5:32Speaker 2: She's ready to play at this level. But again it's
- 5:34Speaker 2: because she's so competitive. She plays so hard. Preston plays
- 5:38Speaker 2: really hard, and so, you know, I think those young kids,
- 5:43Speaker 2: even Justice I thought was different at DePaul Versus earlier.
- 5:49Speaker 3: And so.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Layla's getting healthy and so she's she was five for
- 5:54Speaker 2: nine the other night, but played really hard defensively, had
- 5:57Speaker 2: four rebounds for us. So you know, I think all
- 6:00Speaker 2: those kids are continuously getting better. Kyla came in and
- 6:05Speaker 2: immediately impacted the game. Had four offensive, seven rebounds total,
- 6:11Speaker 2: but block shots, altered shots, just had a physical presence.
- 6:16Speaker 3: In the lane.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Got tangled up, you know, a couple of times and
- 6:20Speaker 2: fell to the ground with whoever got tangled up with.
- 6:22Speaker 2: And I'm pretty sure they came out on the short
- 6:24Speaker 2: end of that deal. So you know, just uh, I
- 6:28Speaker 2: think a lot of kids, That's why I'm playing them
- 6:30Speaker 2: all right now. I'm trying to, you know, see who's
- 6:33Speaker 2: gonna continue to rise to the top. And you know,
- 6:38Speaker 2: uh still haven't played my four guard lineup, and I'm
- 6:41Speaker 2: gonna do that, and uh, I think that'll be a
- 6:45Speaker 2: lineup that can create a lot of problems for people.
- 6:47Speaker 2: So I wish I had an answer for you. But
- 6:51Speaker 2: there's a reason why there's so many people playing so
- 6:53Speaker 2: many minutes because they've all warrant. They all warranted, and
- 6:57Speaker 2: they're you know, Jack Linga, she came in the other
- 7:00Speaker 2: night and immediately impacted the game for us at four
- 7:03Speaker 2: and you know, so with her length and size, and
- 7:08Speaker 2: so I mean, I can just I can talk about
- 7:10Speaker 2: them all, but that's why they're all playing so many minutes.
- 7:17Speaker 5: Yeah, Vic, I mean winning by forty six points. I
- 7:19Speaker 5: don't know if you're the greatest women's team that ever
- 7:22Speaker 5: took the court or in any way, do you worry
- 7:26Speaker 5: that you know you won't be as tested once conference
- 7:30Speaker 5: play starts. They're fine.
- 7:35Speaker 2: We we have so many non conference games. I think
- 7:41Speaker 2: first you have to give my kids credit. The paul
- 7:44Speaker 2: Is is gonna be fine. They're gonna win a lot
- 7:46Speaker 2: of games. Our kids played really good. Richmond was twenty
- 7:51Speaker 2: nine and six last year and they got everybody back,
- 7:54Speaker 2: and two Power five transfers that were difference players on
- 7:58Speaker 2: their team. I got to go to Richmond, I got
- 8:02Speaker 2: to go to James Madison, I got to go play
- 8:05Speaker 2: Maryland on a neutral floor. If we take care of business,
- 8:10Speaker 2: I'm going to play a top twelve team in West
- 8:13Speaker 2: Virginia a week from Sunday. So and then I've got
- 8:18Speaker 2: a top twenty five team in South Dakota State. I mean,
- 8:21Speaker 2: this will be the toughest non conference schedule I've had,
- 8:25Speaker 2: maybe ever. So I think there's plenty of test for
- 8:29Speaker 2: us between now and our first conference game. And you know,
- 8:36Speaker 2: none of those teams other than South Dakota State are
- 8:39Speaker 2: at home, so you know, again, I feel like we're
- 8:45Speaker 2: going to be tested. I feel like we'll be ready,
- 8:49Speaker 2: and again, I think we have plenty of schedule.
- 8:53Speaker 3: I just.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Think you have to give our kids a little credit.
- 8:57Speaker 2: They played pretty good the other night, and you know,
- 9:01Speaker 2: Tarleton'll come in here and I know everybody's thinking, Okay,
- 9:04Speaker 2: they used to be whatever, they used to be Division
- 9:08Speaker 2: two or whatever, and now they're not. Well, no, they're
- 9:10Speaker 2: not now. And he's got five seniors starting. They went
- 9:14Speaker 2: out to Arizona and played them really tough and got
- 9:17Speaker 2: beat twenty. They go to UTEP get beat three on
- 9:19Speaker 2: the road, and they've won two games at home pretty handily.
- 9:23Speaker 2: So you know we're gonna have to We'll have to
- 9:28Speaker 2: be ready. And again it's a sleepy game in the
- 9:30Speaker 2: morning eleven am with a bunch of screaming kids in
- 9:32Speaker 2: the gym, so you never know how that's going to happen.
- 9:35Speaker 2: So you about where we are.
- 9:38Speaker 5: You like the chemistry so far and how the kids
- 9:41Speaker 5: are connecting.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I do, man, I love this team, you know, I
- 9:45Speaker 2: love being around them. You know they're they're you know,
- 9:51Speaker 2: we got those five seniors and in I love o
- 9:56Speaker 2: our approach, especially on game day. I mean, you've got
- 10:00Speaker 2: Booker coming out at two hours prior to TIP, getting
- 10:04Speaker 2: in her twenty five thirty minutes of shots up. You
- 10:07Speaker 2: got Rory coming out with her. You got Shay and
- 10:11Speaker 2: Layla coming out, you know, hour and a half, you
- 10:14Speaker 2: got four or five others coming out hour. So we've
- 10:17Speaker 2: had to stairstep our pregame shooting because you know what,
- 10:22Speaker 2: in the past, everybody rolled out there at an iron
- 10:24Speaker 2: fifteen minutes prior to tip, because that's when coach said
- 10:27Speaker 2: you had to be out and so now you got
- 10:29Speaker 2: thirteen people trying to shoot. We ain't getting very many
- 10:33Speaker 2: shots up when you got thirteen of them out there.
- 10:35Speaker 2: So Booker kind of started it last year in wanting
- 10:39Speaker 2: to get her own time, and then now we got
- 10:42Speaker 2: a whole group of kids wanting to do it. So
- 10:45Speaker 2: I love our approach. And again it's great to have
- 10:48Speaker 2: those seniors who can be a pro, can show them,
- 10:54Speaker 2: show these young kids what it's like to be at
- 10:57Speaker 2: Texas and to understand, man, we're fixing get this team's
- 11:00Speaker 2: best shot. We better be ready to play. We're fixing
- 11:03Speaker 2: go through this scouting report after pregame meal. You better
- 11:06Speaker 2: know what's going on. And if I call your name,
- 11:08Speaker 2: you better not know the answer.
- 11:09Speaker 1: That's the first part of the media visit with Vick Schaeffer.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Pretty compelling stuff and more to come from them a
- 11:16Speaker 1: little later on. Up next, we visit with Greg Tepper,
- 11:18Speaker 1: managing editor of Dave Campbells Texas Football Magazine here on
- 11:21Speaker 1: Sports Medio AM thirteen under the Zone
