- 0:10Speaker 1: In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight.
- 0:12Speaker 2: In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight.
- 0:26Speaker 1: That was a good start.
- 0:31Speaker 3: That was. I can't go that high.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It hurt my voice.
- 0:36Speaker 3: You know what happened?
- 0:37Speaker 2: I was a beautiful singer as a kid.
- 0:41Speaker 3: I could have been anything.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Who told you that?
- 0:43Speaker 2: And then I had my tonsils taken out. No, no,
- 0:46Speaker 2: who told you the first part? The beautiful singing as
- 0:48Speaker 2: a kid.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Is that a thing?
- 0:49Speaker 2: No, I actually joined the choir as a kid just
- 0:51Speaker 2: to get out of class, actually.
- 0:53Speaker 1: That's a smart idea. I didn't think of that.
- 0:55Speaker 2: It was a half an hour every week and we
- 0:58Speaker 2: had to do choir practice and it was in school time.
- 1:01Speaker 2: And then the worst part was we did have to
- 1:04Speaker 2: do the end of season, end of year performance, the
- 1:07Speaker 2: Christmas carols in the park.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09Speaker 2: The town, no, Thuringowa City Council... Christmas carols in the park.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14Speaker 3: And I used to just stand at the back and
- 1:15Speaker 3: just go.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Just mouthing. Say that again. Say that name again.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Thuringowa.
- 1:20Speaker 1: City council.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Yeah. So Townsville's weird.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Like it's like got Townsville City Council and Thuringowa City Council.
- 1:26Speaker 1: That's not far away.
- 1:27Speaker 3: No. Exactly.
- 1:28Speaker 4: Is it kind of like Redcliffe?
- 1:30Speaker 1: No.
- 1:30Speaker 3: No, no. Way closer. No, like.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Like, I'm talking Redcliffe and Scarborough. Oh, right.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I've got these twins.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Real close. Yeah. Redcliffe, Scarborough, same area.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Ah, weird.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Same place, probably.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Pretty much. No.
- 1:47Speaker 5: How good were the Lions?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Mate, that.
- 1:49Speaker 4: That was one of the best games of football you'll
- 1:51Speaker 4: ever see.
- 1:51Speaker 1: The AFL finals is some of the best football between
- 1:57Speaker 1: football both our codes that I've ever seen. Like even
- 2:02Speaker 1: the NRL finals at the moment, apart from the Brewsters
- 2:05Speaker 1: games that they're playing because they're just kicking everyone's ass. Yeah.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Apart from their games, the bar out, like the footy
- 2:13Speaker 1: at the moment is the best I've ever seen.
- 2:15Speaker 3: I know the World Cup better be good. It better
- 2:17Speaker 3: be good.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Or they're all going to be tired.
- 2:23Speaker 3: No, it was a fantastic AFL grand final. I haven't seen.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Wow. Like, there's been some real dominant grand finals of
- 2:30Speaker 2: recent times where it's just like, I remember I was
- 2:34Speaker 2: down to the grand final. I watched the Cats play against,
- 2:37Speaker 2: can't even think now, Because the.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Game was over in the first quarter. Yeah.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Like it was done and dusted and we were like
- 2:42Speaker 2: all sitting in the crowd going.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Oh, that wasn't that long ago.
- 2:45Speaker 3: No, it wasn't.
- 2:45Speaker 1: That wasn't that long ago.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Yeah, there you go. It was against Port Adelaide. It
- 2:48Speaker 3: was 50-odd, maybe even more. It was by 125.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Was it that one?
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:54Speaker 1: 120, there you go.
- 2:55Speaker 3: 120.
- 2:55Speaker 2: So like there has been some terrible AFL Grand Finals.
- 3:01Speaker 3: But that was just goal for goal, wasn't it?
- 3:02Speaker 2: That was just so good. You know what I loved
- 3:04Speaker 2: about it too was– Always. No Victorian teams in it,
- 3:09Speaker 2: which is always a good thing. But the people that
- 3:14Speaker 2: travelled for the game.
- 3:16Speaker 1: So good.
- 3:17Speaker 2: It's a long trip from Brisbane to Melbourne. But to
- 3:21Speaker 2: fly from the west coast to the east coast to
- 3:24Speaker 2: come and watch your team and they all had their colours.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And it was such an incredible game. I absolutely loved it.
- 3:30Speaker 2: That last quarter. Like, I'm not even going to go
- 3:33Speaker 2: back and watch the whole grand final. There was some
- 3:35Speaker 2: cool stuff that happened in the first three quarters, but
- 3:37Speaker 2: if you just go back and watch that last quarter
- 3:39Speaker 2: of the game, it was incredible.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Well, that last quarter had the shifts, like the shift,
- 3:46Speaker 1: the momentum shifts, like so, so at the start it
- 3:50Speaker 1: was like, you know, a couple of minutes, but then
- 3:53Speaker 1: Frio had the shift.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And Frio, I reckon everyone thought, We needed, something needs
- 3:59Speaker 1: to happen here.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Four and a half minutes to go.
- 4:01Speaker 5: The Lions are done.
- 4:02Speaker 1: That's it. And that's the momentum shifted for four and
- 4:05Speaker 1: a half minutes. But that, Freer had it for four
- 4:07Speaker 1: and a half minutes, five minutes maybe. Then in between
- 4:09Speaker 1: those shift is grind, grind, grind. I thought that, I
- 4:12Speaker 1: never say this, the defense in AFL, I've never seen
- 4:17Speaker 1: it so good. I've never seen the, like the defense
- 4:20Speaker 1: in AFL so good.
- 4:22Speaker 3: They just scramble. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:24Speaker 1: You know, and Fag said this after the, you know,
- 4:27Speaker 1: Defense isn't looked at enough in our game. Josh Dunkley,
- 4:32Speaker 1: I actually said to him, he's not a selfish player
- 4:35Speaker 1: or a selfish dude at all. I said, mate, there's
- 4:37Speaker 1: times in your life where you've got to sit back
- 4:39Speaker 1: or you're having a beer at home on your own
- 4:41Speaker 1: and just give yourself a pat on the back. You
- 4:44Speaker 1: really do. As a player and as a leader, not
- 4:49Speaker 1: even a captain. Yes, he is a captain of the Lions,
- 4:52Speaker 1: but just a leader. He leads through the numbers that
- 4:56Speaker 1: people don't look at. You know, tackles, you know, dispose,
- 5:00Speaker 1: you know, charge downs, we call them. Yeah, right.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Spoils.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Spoils, that's the word I can't think of. You know,
- 5:08Speaker 1: those small things in the NFL I think go so unnoticed,
- 5:11Speaker 1: but it's what I watch. I thought it was so,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I thought it was honestly one of the best games
- 5:16Speaker 1: of sport I've seen. In a long time.
- 5:19Speaker 4: You mentioned Faggs there.
- 5:20Speaker 5: He's now a three-peat coach. And he went through the
- 5:23Speaker 5: tough times with the Lions.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Oh, big time.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Five years ago, people were saying, get rid of him.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Get rid of him.
- 5:28Speaker 4: They were literally, they wanted him gone.
- 5:31Speaker 5: And he's now taken us to four grand finals, one
- 5:35Speaker 5: three in a row. And he kind of sounded like
- 5:39Speaker 5: maybe this is it. He alluded to maybe that's enough.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Look, I'm not trying to say Faggs is not young,
- 5:45Speaker 1: but he's not. And it's a hard job.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Like, it is a bloody hard job, man.
- 5:50Speaker 3: It's a toil and a grind.
- 5:51Speaker 1: People always say, would you ever, like, you know, whether
- 5:53Speaker 1: they're serious or not, would you ever coach? I went,
- 5:55Speaker 1: are you effing serious? Like, off your head. Like, even
- 5:59Speaker 1: if I did get offered it, like, no way. Like,
- 6:02Speaker 1: you see what coaches go through, the shit you've got
- 6:04Speaker 1: to deal with, the scrutiny, the media. But then having
- 6:08Speaker 1: to pick players, like, I'm too nice. I can't go
- 6:12Speaker 1: to a guy and say, sorry.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Mate, like. Yeah.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I'm not picking this one. Even those small things as
- 6:18Speaker 1: a coach, it's so hard.
- 6:19Speaker 3: You're a pussy.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I am a pussy. But I'm a nice pussy.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I can have a tough conversation with you, you arsehole.
- 6:30Speaker 1: But no, I just think it is a hard job.
- 6:33Speaker 1: How many years have you been coaching for now, apart
- 6:36Speaker 1: from here? It's got to be up there.
- 6:38Speaker 4: But, I mean, we've got the squad. We've got the team.
- 6:40Speaker 5: You know, Lockie Neal's going, obviously, but other than that,
- 6:43Speaker 5: you know.
- 6:43Speaker 1: He's holding on to a lot of plays. One more year,
- 6:45Speaker 1: why not? I think why not, if they have already
- 6:49Speaker 1: someone in line and he's actually even said this is
- 6:52Speaker 1: the perfect person, or he could be like a director
- 6:56Speaker 1: of coaching and I'll be the director above him and
- 6:59Speaker 1: we'll keep this going. We'll keep this run of, not winning,
- 7:03Speaker 1: just this run of professionalism at the club going.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:08Speaker 2: You know what I love about him too is Fakes is, like,
- 7:10Speaker 2: he doesn't come from a professional AFL playing background.
- 7:14Speaker 1: No.
- 7:15Speaker 3: So, you know, you look at a lot of the
- 7:17Speaker 3: coaches that coach in the AFL now, they're all.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Well, okay. I know this is a bad example, but Wayne, right? Yes,
- 7:24Speaker 1: he played footy. I can't say that he was a
- 7:27Speaker 1: great winger. Wow. Could you?
- 7:30Speaker 3: Well, he did play back with... Jesus and the Jerusalem Jaguars.
- 7:34Speaker 1: But like, you know, he was a copper, right? Jerusalem Jaguars.
- 7:37Speaker 3: A good team. Undefeated.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Really? Yeah, yeah.
- 7:39Speaker 3: You should have seen Moses. Yeah, I know.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Moses, yeah.
- 7:42Speaker 3: All those.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:44Speaker 2: There was this one time Jesus got cut.
- 7:47Speaker 3: In half and they thought he was dead and he
- 7:49Speaker 3: came back to life. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:51Speaker 1: They got mixed up with Wayne and Jesus. And that'd
- 7:53Speaker 1: be awesome.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Straight on full time, the water bottles become wine.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Click of the finger.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Thanks, Jesus. By the Jaguars.
- 8:02Speaker 1: But you look at Wayne, right? He always had the
- 8:04Speaker 1: right people around him. I think we've always said this.
- 8:07Speaker 1: The right people around him and always knew how to
- 8:10Speaker 1: get the best out of players. They're his two big
- 8:14Speaker 1: things that he is so good at and better than
- 8:16Speaker 1: anyone else. The right people and then he knew how
- 8:21Speaker 1: to get the best out of every player. Every player
- 8:23Speaker 1: was individualized. Every single player. We're all a team, but
- 8:28Speaker 1: you're all individual people.
- 8:29Speaker 5: You've got your own relationship with him.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Yeah. And I think if you can see it with Fagan,
- 8:34Speaker 1: he has just that really great relationship with all players.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And I reckon that also the same thing. It's all different.
- 8:41Speaker 1: We're all different with him. And he knows how to
- 8:44Speaker 1: handle every single person individually.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 5: He lives in my old area in, uh, in Bulimba
- 8:50Speaker 5: and you see him pretty much every day. If you live,
- 8:52Speaker 5: he walks cause he does about five, five, 10 Ks
- 8:54Speaker 5: walking every day.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Matthews is there. Yeah.
- 8:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:59Speaker 4: They see each other a lot.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:01Speaker 5: I see them out getting curries and stuff like that.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I tell you, we should just go walk with them.
- 9:05Speaker 5: I watched the game on the, uh, on the very
- 9:07Speaker 5: street with my, with my mate Pete. He lives on
- 9:09Speaker 5: the same street as, um, Hipwood.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Oh, really?
- 9:12Speaker 5: Yeah, so the whole street was all flagged. Apparently he's
- 9:15Speaker 5: in the group chat, the street chat, and everyone's going, go, Eric.
- 9:19Speaker 4: And when he missed those, because I had him in
- 9:21Speaker 4: my multi, when he missed those too, I said, give
- 9:22Speaker 4: me that group chat.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I'm going to get into it.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Kick straight, you bastard.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I was cheering Hipwood until he kicked it. Yeah.
- 9:31Speaker 5: A couple of behinds he had, unfortunately.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Nah, but look, I think.
- 9:36Speaker 1: The Collingwood game that they lost a few years ago,
- 9:39Speaker 1: You know, that could have arguably been one of the
- 9:40Speaker 1: greatest grand finals also, but this has pipped it. And
- 9:44Speaker 1: I think that just shows how good of a game
- 9:46Speaker 1: it was. But, yeah, I had no voice, to be honest.
- 9:50Speaker 3: It was a bad couple of days for Brisbane back then, 23.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Oh, wasn't it?
- 9:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:55Speaker 4: We lost everything.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Because Saturday, yeah, Saturday the Lions lost and then Sunday
- 9:58Speaker 2: the Bronx lost.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 3: And we were watching. Yeah.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I think, didn't we have a third?
- 10:03Speaker 3: There was a third.
- 10:03Speaker 5: I think there might have even been like the, I
- 10:06Speaker 5: don't even remember, but maybe it was like the, was.
- 10:08Speaker 4: It the Titans women or something?
- 10:11Speaker 3: The Titans women, yeah.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Titans women, like we lost everything.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Jamie Chapman scored a hat trick in a losing game.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Ezra Mamm scored a hat trick in a losing game.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it was crazy.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it was awful. Weird times, eh?
- 10:22Speaker 4: What's it feel like?
- 10:24Speaker 5: So when the Lions come back into Brizzy after a
- 10:27Speaker 5: win like that.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Oh, it's you never won a Grand Final.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I was going to say, how do I ask you, Sammy?
- 10:31Speaker 1: I can't tell you. I can tell you what it
- 10:33Speaker 1: was like when you lose one. It's pretty miserable.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Is it?
- 10:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 10:39Speaker 3: That's how the Dockers feel.
- 10:40Speaker 4: That's how the Dockers are feeling.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I can tell you how the Dockers felt.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:43Speaker 1: They'd still be drinking. If I was a Docker, I'd
- 10:46Speaker 1: be actually, is it Tuesday? Tuesday.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Tuesday on the 215 GF, I was at a pub
- 10:51Speaker 1: on my own.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:52Speaker 1: At 10 o'clock. Yeah. Just drinking.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Just going. Yep.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Yep.
- 10:59Speaker 3: I went. Singing country music.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I think I went two months.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:03Speaker 1: What about the Lions?
- 11:05Speaker 4: What about the Lions? How are they feeling?
- 11:06Speaker 3: They'll be gone for two months. Yeah. Yes. It's a
- 11:08Speaker 3: different hype. Same. Different hype.
- 11:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:12Speaker 2: You know what there's a lot of bullshit that you
- 11:14Speaker 2: have to go through as well oh there's so much
- 11:18Speaker 2: even when you lose you know the hardest part is
- 11:20Speaker 2: like I remember doing we had to sign all this
- 11:23Speaker 2: memorabilia and we got paid to do it which was
- 11:26Speaker 2: fantastic but like we're three days in at this point
- 11:29Speaker 2: in time and they want you to sign your signature
- 11:31Speaker 2: on a little rectangle which is like you know two
- 11:35Speaker 2: inches wide one inch thick and you've got to try
- 11:37Speaker 2: and sign.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Your name on 250 of them and.
- 11:40Speaker 3: You're like.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Is that why half those autographs you can't read?
- 11:47Speaker 1: Well, when we used to do a Bronx signing day,
- 11:49Speaker 1: they used to put it at 4X Brewery.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And we used to get blind on it. Like, you'd do, like,
- 11:53Speaker 1: 10 and then you'd.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Go have 20 beers.
- 11:55Speaker 2: It was funny because they encouraged us to sign the
- 11:57Speaker 2: jerseys first and then, like, we would, like, have a
- 12:00Speaker 2: beer afterwards. But it's like, because there was, like, if
- 12:03Speaker 2: there was 20 piles of stuff, like you've got 20 players,
- 12:06Speaker 2: you've got a 30-man squad, so.
- 12:08Speaker 3: There's always 10 guys.
- 12:09Speaker 1: There's 600 jerseys.
- 12:10Speaker 3: It's like, oh, okay, I'll have to have a beer.
- 12:13Speaker 3: By the time everyone's finished, it's like, jeez, I've had three.
- 12:18Speaker 3: And then you sign them like old Crown style as
- 12:20Speaker 3: a kid.
- 12:21Speaker 2: That was great.
- 12:25Speaker 1: That was a great signing session.
- 12:26Speaker 2: So now you know and understand why their signatures look shit.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Maybe now I know why they stopped doing that.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 12:33Speaker 5: We should talk about the rugby league grand final coming up.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Rugby league.
- 12:37Speaker 4: We'll do that in the.
- 12:38Speaker 1: No, let's be the AFL podcast. We'll do that in
- 12:39Speaker 1: the proper one. Yeah, yeah. Let's change.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Okay, we'll just do a full switch. But we should
- 12:44Speaker 4: talk about Cleary in this bonus podcast.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:49Speaker 4: He's come out over the last.
- 12:51Speaker 5: uh, 24 hours, depending on when you're here in the podcast.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:53Speaker 5: And he's made some comments about, um, about Phoenix Crosland.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Yes.
- 12:58Speaker 5: He's had to come to his defense because Phoenix has
- 13:00Speaker 5: been just copying insane abuse.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I don't like it.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Which is unnecessary at the end of the day. It's,
- 13:05Speaker 3: that's absolute bullshit.
- 13:06Speaker 1: It is. Um, it's, it's a, it's a full contact sport.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Like shit happens. Accidents happen.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Um, and, and I can tell you right now, like,
- 13:18Speaker 1: The amount of injuries I've had, the amount of injuries
- 13:21Speaker 1: you've had, not one dude did I ever think hit
- 13:25Speaker 1: me intentionally to snap my leg or tear a tendon,
- 13:30Speaker 1: break a jaw, drink water maybe. But I'm just saying
- 13:38Speaker 1: if we're all being serious about the tackle, it wasn't bad. Like,
- 13:44Speaker 1: it was not the worst tackle I've ever seen in
- 13:46Speaker 1: my life. I've seen way worse in the last week.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:49Speaker 1: And nothing happens. Like, I'll tell you right now, Crosston
- 13:52Speaker 1: didn't put on there, I'm going to do this to
- 13:55Speaker 1: the best player. Like, no way does it ever cross
- 13:58Speaker 1: people's minds. No way do you ever think about falling
- 14:02Speaker 1: in a tackle also. Like, it's just.
- 14:04Speaker 3: At the end of the day, a hip drop tackle
- 14:06Speaker 3: is a.
- 14:09Speaker 3: It's a fatigue tackle.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 3: It is. It's a fatigue tackle.
- 14:12Speaker 2: So it's like, I've made contact and it's almost the
- 14:15Speaker 2: exhale of, oh, you know, trying to then get the
- 14:19Speaker 2: person to the ground. There's been a lot of people
- 14:22Speaker 2: that have spoken about it, but that's where that tackle
- 14:24Speaker 2: comes from.
- 14:25Speaker 1: It's fatigue.
- 14:26Speaker 2: There's so much more fatigue in our game now and
- 14:29Speaker 2: it's going to be so hard to get it out.
- 14:32Speaker 5: Did you hear what Billy Slater suggested could be part
- 14:34Speaker 5: of the problem?
- 14:35Speaker 3: What?
- 14:36Speaker 5: Is that because Cleary being a kicker and the new
- 14:40Speaker 5: protections on the kicker, you can't You've got to be careful,
- 14:42Speaker 5: real careful that you don't hit the kicker late, you
- 14:44Speaker 5: don't hit the kicker hard. And so Phoenix actually knowing
- 14:48Speaker 5: that Cleary's a kicker would have gone in slower than
- 14:51Speaker 5: another player. And so he actually reduced his speed. And
- 14:55Speaker 5: so when Cleary then ran, Phoenix was actually put on
- 15:00Speaker 5: a softer hit than he would have put.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Well, because he's always got to be careful if he
- 15:03Speaker 1: kicks it.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:05Speaker 1: You aren't allowed to go through the tackle.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I think, again, those rules that we have tightened up
- 15:09Speaker 1: on are bullshit. Yeah.
- 15:11Speaker 3: I want all the people.
- 15:13Speaker 2: There was a perfect timing one.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Oh, in the same game?
- 15:16Speaker 3: It was so good. It was perfect timing. It was perfect.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Old mate has just got rid of the kick and
- 15:21Speaker 1: he's gone hit.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Wasn't high.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Nah.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Wasn't shoulder charged. Went down with him.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:26Speaker 1: And I went, they're in the rule book as a
- 15:28Speaker 1: clean tackle.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Perfect hit.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And they still penalized him because he hit him. But
- 15:34Speaker 1: I think... We have been just too, like, I want
- 15:38Speaker 1: the people that make our rules to play a game
- 15:40Speaker 1: of footy against each other. And all the rules, no,
- 15:43Speaker 1: I'm being serious. Like, tell me if they can change
- 15:47Speaker 1: their hit height. Tell me if they can pull out
- 15:48Speaker 1: of a tackle. Tell me when they go up for
- 15:51Speaker 1: a jump on a fifth and last kick that you
- 15:54Speaker 1: can change from catching a ball to tackling a dude
- 15:57Speaker 1: like that.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:59Speaker 1: You can't. They need to be realistic with their rules
- 16:02Speaker 1: a little bit more. But back on the Crossland thing,
- 16:06Speaker 1: I'm so glad Cleary's come out because I knew this
- 16:11Speaker 1: was going to happen. As soon as it happened, I
- 16:14Speaker 1: felt really sorry for him. But I felt so sorry
- 16:17Speaker 1: for Crossland because... Yeah. Honestly, he's a great player and
- 16:21Speaker 1: he works his ass off. He's a workhorse.
- 16:23Speaker 3: He was their best player against the Warriors. He tackled everything.
- 16:27Speaker 2: He dove on all these balls on the ground and
- 16:29Speaker 2: he's a fantastic player.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Yeah, he is.
- 16:32Speaker 3: I watch him play week in and week out and
- 16:33Speaker 3: he does not play with any.
- 16:35Speaker 1: There's no malice.
- 16:36Speaker 3: There's no malice in anything that he does out there
- 16:38Speaker 3: in the field. He's just a super competitor.
- 16:40Speaker 1: And that's it. And he probably, when Cleary come on,
- 16:45Speaker 1: he's like, I need to make sure that I don't
- 16:47Speaker 1: let him make a break. I need to follow him.
- 16:49Speaker 1: He can't get past me because he's too important, right?
- 16:53Speaker 1: And it's just, it's so unlucky with what happened.
- 16:58Speaker 3: He's beating himself up now.
- 17:01Speaker 2: 100%.
- 17:01Speaker 3: 100%. And then with all these comments and everyone atting him,
- 17:05Speaker 3: it's not a good thing.
- 17:07Speaker 1: It's not right.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Because at the end of the day, if you want
- 17:08Speaker 2: on your conscious, we don't know what type of state
- 17:11Speaker 2: of mind he's in. If he goes and takes his
- 17:13Speaker 2: own life, that's on your conscious at the end of
- 17:16Speaker 2: the day.
- 17:16Speaker 3: If you have made any comment towards him so.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Like just zip your lip shut up it's a it
- 17:26Speaker 2: is a contact sport accidents happen it is entertainment at
- 17:30Speaker 2: the end of the day and we all ride the
- 17:32Speaker 2: fucking highs and lows of sport and you win games
- 17:36Speaker 2: and you fucking lose games support your team support your
- 17:40Speaker 2: players support our game but.
- 17:43Speaker 5: Don't attack but don't attack well I mean if anyone's
- 17:46Speaker 5: got a right to hold it against him it's Cleary
- 17:48Speaker 5: but Cleary said this It was a complete accident, and
- 17:51Speaker 5: he doesn't deserve the unwarranted hate. He reached out to apologize,
- 17:55Speaker 5: and I have nothing but respect for him. He's a competitor,
- 17:58Speaker 5: and our game is made up of split-second moments that
- 18:01Speaker 5: sometimes lead to unfortunate circumstances. Comments like this are so unfair.
- 18:05Speaker 5: I mean, it's clear for a start.
- 18:09Speaker 1: But you've been on the other side of, you've accidentally
- 18:12Speaker 1: caused an injury.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:14Speaker 1: I've done it. Not to that extent, but even when
- 18:17Speaker 1: it just hurts someone, and they've got to go off.
- 18:20Speaker 1: you feel so shit. Like, you message him. You say, mate,
- 18:23Speaker 1: I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to. You never mean to.
- 18:27Speaker 1: You know, so imagine what he's going through and then
- 18:29Speaker 1: having to deal with all that shit. So, like, wake
- 18:31Speaker 1: up yourselves and it's a fucking sport. It's a contact sport.
- 18:35Speaker 3: We wish Nathan Cleary all the best.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Yeah, all the best for the recovery, mate.
- 18:38Speaker 2: You and I have seen firsthand with Jarrell, yeah, how
- 18:41Speaker 2: tough this injury is.
- 18:42Speaker 3: It's pretty similar. Yeah, very, very similar. Yeah. Extremely similar.
- 18:46Speaker 3: And the.
- 18:48Speaker 2: I think the thing that, the worst thing that happened
- 18:52Speaker 2: with Gerard was infection at the end of the day, so.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Yeah, the skin, wasn't it?
- 18:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, like, it happening in Perth, we were there,
- 19:00Speaker 2: I think he went to hospital, he got it all
- 19:02Speaker 2: cleaned out, and maybe it was a day or two
- 19:04Speaker 2: days later, he travelled back to Brisbane, but by the
- 19:07Speaker 2: time he'd landed in Brisbane, like, infection had already been there.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Wow.
- 19:10Speaker 2: And this, what they had done in trying to close
- 19:14Speaker 2: it up, it's already, the skin started dying, and, Dural
- 19:17Speaker 2: was surgery after surgery. And he went into a really deep,
- 19:21Speaker 2: dark spiral, Dural.
- 19:22Speaker 1: It's tough.
- 19:23Speaker 2: I was lucky enough to interview him and have a
- 19:26Speaker 2: chat to him about it. But, yeah, we do wish
- 19:29Speaker 2: Nathan all the best because we do know firsthand through
- 19:33Speaker 2: Dural what this injury is. And we do hope that
- 19:37Speaker 2: he gets a chance and opportunity to come back and
- 19:39Speaker 2: play again because the worst-case scenario is that's the end
- 19:44Speaker 2: of his career.
- 19:45Speaker 4: If Durrell came back and played one game, but it
- 19:47Speaker 4: was kind of.
- 19:48Speaker 1: He played back, right?
- 19:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Because he couldn't step anymore. Couldn't run, yeah, couldn't step. Yeah,
- 19:52Speaker 2: he could only run straight, so.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:55Speaker 1: It is, but, yeah, look, we wish him all the best. And,
- 19:59Speaker 1: like you said, you know, we know Durrell well, and
- 20:03Speaker 1: it's a long road back. And I'm sure they're doing
- 20:06Speaker 1: all the right steps to not allow the worst-case scenario
- 20:09Speaker 1: to happen.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:10Speaker 1: But, yeah, there's always the.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Any type of operation in a hospital.
- 20:15Speaker 1: You never know. There's always a chance. So, mate, good luck.
- 20:20Speaker 1: All the best with it. And, yeah, can't wait to
- 20:21Speaker 1: see you back.
- 20:22Speaker 5: And we're coming back to cover the grand final. We'll
- 20:25Speaker 5: talk about the Roosters, the Newcastle Knights, who's going to win.
- 20:28Speaker 5: We'll do all that in the proper podcast.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Podcast.
- 20:34Speaker 1: We're going to prod the cast. Have a broadcast.
