Transcript
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Writers have always been fascinated by the relationship between writing and courage.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Does it take courage to write, or does writing produce courage?
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: It's a chicken or the egg scenario, but the answer is yes, both are true.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: For example, many authors and writing teachers over the last few decades have talked about how you need courage to write, and that's certainly true because writing is hard work, it's self-expression, it can create change or provoke strong feelings in other people.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: So writing certainly requires courage.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: When we put our pen to paper and share our words with the world, it takes a certain amount of guts, it takes a certain amount of courage.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: But the opposite is true as well.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Yes, it takes courage to write, but writing also produces courage.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Take Anne Frank, for example.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: She and her family lived in a secret annex to an office building for two years while they were hiding out from the Nazis during World War II.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: And during that time, Anne Frank kept a diary where she recorded her experiences and thoughts.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: She wrote, I can shake off everything as I write.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: My sorrows disappear.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: My courage is reborn.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Anne Frank and her family were eventually discovered in their secret hiding place, and she died in a concentration camp in 1945.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: She was only 15 years old.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: When you're not feeling so courageous, think of the young Anne Frank and her courage.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Think of her fighting against boredom and living every day in fear of being discovered by the Nazis.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: The act of putting your words down will lift your mood and boost your spirit.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Most people never even take that simple step of just writing in the first place.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: And when you do that, you have shown the world, and more importantly, you've shown yourself that you have a courageous soul.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: And despite whatever obstacles you might face with your writing, you will discover, like Anne Frank did, that the simple act of writing gives you more courage in return.
