- 0:22Speaker 2: In terms of the practice itself, what was the mood
- 0:25Speaker 2: out there?
- 0:26Speaker 3: Oh, you know, we don't really see a lot this
- 0:28Speaker 3: time of year. We're obviously not seeing team drills or
- 0:31Speaker 3: anything like that. Well, I'm not talking about the players.
- 0:33Speaker 3: I'm talking about the media. Evan, I get this for you.
- 0:36Speaker 3: You work for in-house media. Well, yeah, there's like a
- 0:39Speaker 3: tone to it. And that's fine. So don't let them
- 0:43Speaker 3: get it.
- 0:43Speaker 4: And when I say they, I don't mean every single
- 0:45Speaker 4: one of them. I say a lot of them.
- 0:47Speaker 5: They're not getting to me.
- 0:48Speaker 2: It sounds like they are. A little bit.
- 0:50Speaker 4: No, they're not. He's got a little Brian Morey to him.
- 0:53Speaker 4: I'm not mad.
- 0:54Speaker 2: First grade, St. Raymond's in Providence.
- 0:56Speaker 6: It's a big men's room, and I'm in a stall
- 0:59Speaker 6: doing my thing, and these older kids knock open the.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Door and start laughing.
- 1:03Speaker 7: Oh, no.
- 1:04Speaker 2: And so ever since then, like, first grade. Well, I
- 1:06Speaker 2: said it, too.
- 1:07Speaker 8: I had a traumatic experience in first grade where I got, well,
- 1:09Speaker 8: I don't know if I actually did.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I can't remember, but they said I flooded the toilet. Listen,
- 1:13Speaker 2: out there, fantasy football players, if you got Christian McCaffrey,
- 1:16Speaker 2: play him. It's going to have a big game.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Can't get that just anymore. No, no.
- 1:22Speaker 2: You've got to pay for it. This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:26Speaker 6: Presented by Toyota's official website for deals, buyatoyota.com.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:33Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:35Speaker 6: It is Tuesday at 11 here at Gillette Stadium in
- 1:39Speaker 6: our new time, which will remain our time for the
- 1:42Speaker 6: rest of the season.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Subject to change.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Our time.
- 1:46Speaker 2: It's Paul. It's Deuce. It's me. Evan will be here.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Alex is in the booth. And we're talking. A Pittsburgh win. Yeah.
- 1:54Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:54Speaker 2: It's always good to get a win in the NFL.
- 1:56Speaker 6: So we're going to dissect that and talk about what's
- 1:59Speaker 6: going on here at Gillette Stadium with the Patriots.
- 2:03Speaker 2: And everything else. Injuries, injuries, not just here, all across
- 2:07Speaker 2: the league. It's crazy. Brutal, brutal week.
- 2:10Speaker 4: I think we're up to six starting quarterbacks in two
- 2:12Speaker 4: weeks that are missing starts.
- 2:14Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:16Speaker 6: There's a live cam in Chicago. The priest has showed
- 2:18Speaker 6: up at Caleb Williams' house.
- 2:20Speaker 4: I told you on the post-cam show. You were there
- 2:22Speaker 4: when I said that, right?
- 2:23Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know if I've ever seen anything
- 2:26Speaker 4: like that. Or a pulled hamstring.
- 2:28Speaker 2: The memes are wonderful. Just all the different captions. You know, given.
- 2:33Speaker 8: Give him the Caleb Strong hashtag.
- 2:34Speaker 4: I'm going to be all right.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Did you see the meme?
- 2:37Speaker 4: And I like Caleb Williams, too.
- 2:38Speaker 6: Did you see the meme where he takes a towel
- 2:40Speaker 6: off and he raises his hand? Me when I can't
- 2:43Speaker 6: get Diet Coke and I settle for Diet Pepsi.
- 2:48Speaker 4: That's good for you.
- 2:48Speaker 2: That was a good one. That was a good one. Anyway,
- 2:51Speaker 2: so how are we feeling?
- 2:54Speaker 10: Good.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Really good about the defense. Concerned a little bit about
- 2:59Speaker 4: the offense, but I think it's just a consistency issue.
- 3:02Speaker 4: I don't think that week two is going to be
- 3:03Speaker 4: a referendum on the whole season. I think things will
- 3:06Speaker 4: get better. I think Drake May will be better. I
- 3:08Speaker 4: have confidence in that. I don't know if I'm going
- 3:11Speaker 4: to knock you off stride by being optimistic, but defensively,
- 3:14Speaker 4: I thought they were excellent.
- 3:15Speaker 2: A little bit. You never know.
- 3:17Speaker 8: Keeps you guessing. You know, I feel pretty good, too.
- 3:20Speaker 8: I know there's an uproar out there, which I expect
- 3:23Speaker 8: from this fan base. They have high expectations, and it
- 3:25Speaker 8: hasn't been great through the first two weeks, but I
- 3:28Speaker 8: think I'm just embracing the journey with Drake May right now, and,
- 3:31Speaker 8: you know... It was great last year, and you came
- 3:34Speaker 8: away thinking like, oh, he's going to be this guy.
- 3:36Speaker 2: And I didn't really think that was the level he
- 3:38Speaker 2: was going to play at.
- 3:39Speaker 8: So right now it feels like he's fighting it, and
- 3:42Speaker 8: I want to see him fight out of it.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I want to see him develop. I don't think it's
- 3:46Speaker 2: easy on him.
- 3:47Speaker 8: He doesn't have really great weaponry around him right now,
- 3:50Speaker 8: and I think it's developing chemistry, and then the injuries hit,
- 3:54Speaker 8: and that's another thing that he's got to deal with.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, as Vrabel.
- 3:58Speaker 6: Said, there's a lot to not just every game but
- 4:01Speaker 6: every play. in the NFL, and there's a lot to it.
- 4:04Speaker 6: Sometimes it's evident, like the Chisholm opportunity.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Hunter Henry missed the block.
- 4:14Speaker 6: And that play probably is a positive play at least
- 4:18Speaker 6: instead of a loss. So things like that, but everybody's
- 4:22Speaker 6: got to do their job, and I think in the
- 4:24Speaker 6: case of May, it's not just May as to the
- 4:27Speaker 6: reason why they've only scored one touchdown in each of
- 4:29Speaker 6: the first two games.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a little bit. There's more to it.
- 4:33Speaker 6: But as we said in the postgame show, or at
- 4:36Speaker 6: least I said, I don't want to put words in
- 4:38Speaker 6: anyone else's mouth, he's the guy that we're in line
- 4:43Speaker 6: to pay a lot of money to. A lot of money.
- 4:48Speaker 6: You know, probably at the time that we pay him,
- 4:50Speaker 6: he'll then become the highest paid quarterback in the league.
- 4:55Speaker 6: So a lot is expected of him. And I'm sure
- 4:58Speaker 6: that's weighing on him. So I look at it this way.
- 5:02Speaker 6: I'm trying to think reasonably and really be analytical about
- 5:08Speaker 6: this without using the analytics.
- 5:11Speaker 2: What has changed between MVP runner-up Drake May and today?
- 5:16Speaker 2: So there's a few things.
- 5:17Speaker 4: A lot of things.
- 5:18Speaker 2: The playoffs, where you met a whole bunch of really
- 5:22Speaker 2: good defenses, losing, at this point, three wide receivers, because
- 5:28Speaker 2: I include A.J. Brown in that, but Booty... and Stephon
- 5:31Speaker 2: Diggs as compared to last year. That's fair.
- 5:34Speaker 6: And then I think, I'm not, you know, I think
- 5:38Speaker 6: those two things, those are the two things I think
- 5:40Speaker 6: that have changed. And I think both of them are
- 5:44Speaker 6: in his head. You know, that trauma that you had
- 5:49Speaker 6: during the playoffs where every play you're fearing for your life,
- 5:54Speaker 6: you know, just rhetoric, you know, not rhetorical, but just
- 5:59Speaker 6: speaking and, you know, And then, you know, not having
- 6:04Speaker 6: the same guys out there that you had last year
- 6:07Speaker 6: or that you had in camp in terms of A.J. Brown,
- 6:12Speaker 6: I think he's still going through things. I think, you know,
- 6:14Speaker 6: he's got work to do upstairs. And like Paul said,
- 6:19Speaker 6: I think it's going to be okay. I think it's
- 6:21Speaker 6: going to be okay. But there's a lot on this
- 6:24Speaker 6: young kid's shoulders at this point.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:27Speaker 8: Yeah, and I'd say also last year, you don't know
- 6:29Speaker 8: what you don't know as a rookie quarterback, and it's
- 6:31Speaker 8: almost like you don't really have all these different things
- 6:34Speaker 8: weighing down on you yet, or thoughts about which coverages
- 6:37Speaker 8: you can't do, or all those things. You're just kind
- 6:39Speaker 8: of going out there playing early on. I think there
- 6:41Speaker 8: was a little bit of that last year, too. I
- 6:43Speaker 8: see what you're saying. I mean, it just seems like
- 6:44Speaker 8: there's a lot on him right now, and good. Like,
- 6:47Speaker 8: this is an NFL quarterback. Like, this is what happens.
- 6:49Speaker 8: There's supposed to be a lot on a quarterback. Right,
- 6:51Speaker 8: so either sink or swim. I think he has all
- 6:54Speaker 8: the physical tools and the off-the-field tools to bet on him.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Is he going to be the perfect quarterback? Probably not.
- 7:01Speaker 8: He's going to have some warts, but I still think
- 7:03Speaker 8: we can get him back to a place where he's
- 7:06Speaker 8: really excelling.
- 7:08Speaker 6: You know, Durant, I always bring up the blog because
- 7:11Speaker 6: I'm getting– raw reaction from fans in the moment and
- 7:16Speaker 6: no sooner do these things happen but the north carolina
- 7:18Speaker 6: people i watched his whole career this.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Is who he is this is who he.
- 7:22Speaker 6: Is like okay but north carolina he also went through
- 7:27Speaker 6: change he never had the same coordinator every year he's
- 7:30Speaker 6: probably do there he had pressure as well he's trying
- 7:33Speaker 6: to do it all himself.
- 7:34Speaker 4: He also didn't have the amount of support around right
- 7:36Speaker 4: that's what i'm saying yeah i would push back But
- 7:39Speaker 4: I'm not even just talking about the coaches changing over
- 7:42Speaker 4: every year. I'm talking about the talent he has around him,
- 7:44Speaker 4: the defense that he has to lean on. They won
- 7:46Speaker 4: a game because of defense the other day.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:50Speaker 4: So that's part of it. There's a lot that goes
- 7:53Speaker 4: on the quarterback's plate. That's sort of inherent with the
- 7:56Speaker 4: position in the league. And I think he has plenty
- 7:58Speaker 4: to work with. I do think there's some newness that's
- 8:01Speaker 4: part of the issue. But another thing that we haven't mentioned,
- 8:04Speaker 4: you didn't mention in your things that changed, is I
- 8:07Speaker 4: feel like there's been a change to the way some
- 8:09Speaker 4: of these teams are defending him as well. I think
- 8:11Speaker 4: there's more tape out on him, and there's adjustments to
- 8:14Speaker 4: the adjustments that still need to be made. I rest
- 8:18Speaker 4: where I started with the very top of the show.
- 8:21Speaker 4: I don't really have... My faith has not been shaken
- 8:25Speaker 4: very much. I have some concerns about what I'm seeing
- 8:28Speaker 4: and all that stuff, but I also watch this guy
- 8:30Speaker 4: play at a very high level for virtually an entire season,
- 8:33Speaker 4: and I have no doubt that he can get back
- 8:35Speaker 4: there because physically I still see those traits. I just
- 8:39Speaker 4: haven't seen him consistently in these two games like I
- 8:41Speaker 4: did last year. I think it'll come.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I think it is.
- 8:44Speaker 8: I was doing a little digging on the numbers, not
- 8:46Speaker 8: to get bogged down in it, but the most simple
- 8:48Speaker 8: thing is a young quarterback early on, especially last year
- 8:52Speaker 8: where you didn't quite know if he has guys who
- 8:54Speaker 8: can separate, is you want to play man defense, cover
- 8:56Speaker 8: them tight, and.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Make this quarterback make great throws.
- 8:59Speaker 8: I think what he proved last year, beyond a shadow
- 9:02Speaker 8: of a doubt, is that he can throw the ball
- 9:03Speaker 8: down the field. So now you've seen a slow morphing
- 9:06Speaker 8: which is even more effective with good defenses, back into
- 9:09Speaker 8: more zone and saying, okay, this kid, we got to
- 9:12Speaker 8: make him check it down and let him find the
- 9:14Speaker 8: zones and make him rely on these receivers to find
- 9:17Speaker 8: the right spots. And I think you still see some
- 9:18Speaker 8: of the clunkiness that we saw last year when it
- 9:21Speaker 8: wasn't going right, drifting into pressure a little bit. Sometimes
- 9:23Speaker 8: his feet aren't set and he tries to force it.
- 9:25Speaker 8: You know, sometimes his receiver is not making the right
- 9:28Speaker 8: read on the play. So it is a little bit
- 9:29Speaker 8: of comedy of errors, but I think Paul's totally right.
- 9:31Speaker 8: That's how they've evolved.
- 9:33Speaker 4: And I'll say one more quick thing on that is
- 9:35Speaker 4: I agree with Mike. I think we've seen a little
- 9:36Speaker 4: change in how they're defending him, but I also would
- 9:39Speaker 4: say that affects his ability to run because he did
- 9:42Speaker 4: see a lot of that man stuff. Then that opens
- 9:45Speaker 4: up avenues to take off and run. I think teams
- 9:48Speaker 4: have done a better job. He's still, you know, he's
- 9:50Speaker 4: still effective with his legs. He's still effective. you know, off-platform.
- 9:53Speaker 4: One of the big plays in the game Sunday was
- 9:56Speaker 4: sort of a broken play that he drifted to the
- 9:58Speaker 4: right sideline and hit Dobbs down the side. Not the 63-yarder.
- 10:01Speaker 4: That was a regular play, but there was a broken
- 10:03Speaker 4: play also for another big game to Dobbs in that game.
- 10:07Speaker 4: So he can still do that, but I don't think
- 10:09Speaker 4: he's been necessarily as big a threat because I think
- 10:13Speaker 4: teams are playing him a little bit differently as a runner.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and, you know... You have to admit that right now,
- 10:20Speaker 2: he doesn't have that guy. One that he can really
- 10:23Speaker 2: depend on in a pinch, but also that opens it
- 10:26Speaker 2: up for other guys.
- 10:27Speaker 4: I agree with that.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And that was supposed to be A.J. Brown. Last year,
- 10:32Speaker 2: it was Stephon Diggs. Let's face it. They're missing his
- 10:35Speaker 2: dependability and his productivity. They don't have that guy right now.
- 10:41Speaker 2: They don't have him.
- 10:42Speaker 4: No, I think that's absolutely true.
- 10:44Speaker 2: That's part of the process here.
- 10:45Speaker 8: I think they've got to find some new ways to
- 10:47Speaker 8: move the ball. In the last couple days, we were
- 10:50Speaker 8: talking about Reggie Gilliam, just the impact that he's made.
- 10:54Speaker 8: Can he do a little bit more in the passing game?
- 10:57Speaker 8: Could that be another check down option for Drake? I'm
- 11:00Speaker 8: also a little worried, not worried, I'm just disappointed to
- 11:03Speaker 8: see Raritan go out. I like getting him in there
- 11:06Speaker 8: and having that two tight end set.
- 11:08Speaker 2: I saw they worked out a bunch of tight ends yesterday.
- 11:10Speaker 2: I don't think that's a.
- 11:11Speaker 8: Great sign for Eli Raritan, but I would have been
- 11:14Speaker 8: encouraged to keep him in the lineup and keep working
- 11:16Speaker 8: with him and hoping that he can develop.
- 11:19Speaker 6: I do want to give people updates on injuries from
- 11:22Speaker 6: what we know, because we don't know everything, but at.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Least to what we know. But before we do that, Evan?
- 11:27Speaker 9: Hello.
- 11:28Speaker 5: How are we doing?
- 11:28Speaker 6: We're just talking about thoughts after we had our thoughts
- 11:33Speaker 6: after the post-game show.
- 11:34Speaker 2: The panic. As of Tuesday, how are we feeling? Good.
- 11:39Speaker 5: I feel largely okay.
- 11:40Speaker 3: I think that there's a lot of panic right now,
- 11:43Speaker 3: a pretty big sea of negativity around the offense, around
- 11:46Speaker 3: the quarterback.
- 11:48Speaker 2: What about you?
- 11:49Speaker 6: All I care about right now is how you feel.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 11:53Speaker 5: I feel pretty good.
- 11:54Speaker 3: I definitely feel better about it than I did coming
- 11:57Speaker 3: out of the Seattle game.
- 11:59Speaker 5: Even though I thought Drake maybe didn't have.
- 12:03Speaker 3: As many of like the catastrophic errors that he did
- 12:05Speaker 3: in Seattle that cost him the game. But, uh, I
- 12:08Speaker 3: didn't love how he played in this one, uh, which
- 12:10Speaker 3: I'm sure we'll talk about, but I think that what
- 12:13Speaker 3: you did see were the glimpses of the big plays.
- 12:16Speaker 3: And that was what made this offense a special last year.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Uh, they were.
- 12:20Speaker 3: The number one in the league in explosive pass rate.
- 12:22Speaker 3: They had six chunk plays out of this game, two
- 12:25Speaker 3: of them on the ground, four of them through the air.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Even though the stuff in between, which is what we
- 12:29Speaker 3: talked a little bit about on Catch-22, wasn't great. The
- 12:33Speaker 3: fact is, is that... you know, the, the big plays
- 12:36Speaker 3: is sort of where it starts. And then you try
- 12:39Speaker 3: to get those drives finished and get those drives in
- 12:41Speaker 3: the end zone, uh, a little bit better moving forward. So, uh, I,
- 12:46Speaker 3: that's always encouraging to me, uh, when the offense doesn't
- 12:49Speaker 3: feel like a boa constrictors around its neck in that
- 12:52Speaker 3: being the Seattle Seahawks defense, uh, the last couple of
- 12:55Speaker 3: games where they just can't, uh, really, you know, hit
- 12:58Speaker 3: any sort of plays down the field or any sort
- 13:00Speaker 3: of explosives in any way. Uh, this felt a little
- 13:03Speaker 3: bit like they'd had some air to breathe a little
- 13:07Speaker 3: bit against this Pittsburgh defense. So that was encouraging overall
- 13:11Speaker 3: for me. I understand all the concerns about the quarterback.
- 13:13Speaker 3: He doesn't look, he kind of lost his mojo to
- 13:17Speaker 3: me as the way I would describe it. Like he
- 13:19Speaker 3: doesn't have, isn't playing with the same looseness and confidence
- 13:23Speaker 3: that we saw when he was, you know, really sort of,
- 13:26Speaker 3: you know, dealing last year. But, I think overall the
- 13:31Speaker 3: offense at least flashed a little bit that it has
- 13:35Speaker 3: that big playability.
- 13:36Speaker 6: We talked about it before you got on, so you're
- 13:39Speaker 6: a little disadvantaged, but I'll give you the.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Question that we had and we answered.
- 13:45Speaker 6: What has changed between now and when he was runner-up
- 13:48Speaker 6: MVP last regular season?
- 13:51Speaker 5: Got his butt kicked in the playoffs.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Right, that was one of our answers.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I think that's really what the biggest change is. Like,
- 13:57Speaker 3: I know there's also personnel.
- 13:59Speaker 5: Changes, obviously.
- 14:00Speaker 3: That was another one of our answers. But the personnel
- 14:02Speaker 3: changes happen with every team. You know, every team loses
- 14:05Speaker 3: guys and adds guys and, you know, whatever the case
- 14:08Speaker 3: may be. To me, the biggest difference between Drake, May...
- 14:12Speaker 3: in the regular season last year compared to where he
- 14:14Speaker 3: is at right now is that he got his butt
- 14:17Speaker 3: kicked for four straight games in the playoffs. And I
- 14:20Speaker 3: think that the biggest thing I think is the fumbling. I,
- 14:24Speaker 3: the interceptions are still there. So I can't say that
- 14:27Speaker 3: the interceptions, you know, he's kind of taking care of that,
- 14:30Speaker 3: but I, I watch him play and I feel like
- 14:33Speaker 3: the fumbling and making quicker decisions is, is something that
- 14:37Speaker 3: he's trying to do to, like, mitigate the fumbles.
- 14:41Speaker 5: And now he's, like, sped up.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Now he's making decisions too quickly, where he's not letting
- 14:46Speaker 3: things develop around him a little bit longer to.
- 14:49Speaker 5: See if certain receivers.
- 14:51Speaker 3: flash open or things that you know defenders attach to
- 14:54Speaker 3: this guy that's going to open up that guy or
- 14:57Speaker 3: whatever the case may be and I feel like he's
- 15:00Speaker 3: going through it a little bit too quickly at times
- 15:03Speaker 3: maybe even skipping reads and I think that that has
- 15:06Speaker 3: to do with he doesn't want to spend too much
- 15:08Speaker 3: time in the pocket because he did that in the
- 15:10Speaker 3: playoffs last year and he fumbled the ball seven times
- 15:14Speaker 3: and cost the team in big situations. So I think
- 15:17Speaker 3: that that's where a lot of it, to me, stems from.
- 15:20Speaker 6: So from watching the tape and from the people who
- 15:24Speaker 6: do the analytics, is his, I don't want to, I'll
- 15:29Speaker 6: say fear, but I don't know if he's fearful, but
- 15:31Speaker 6: is his fear of staying in the pocket too long
- 15:33Speaker 6: warranted at this point?
- 15:35Speaker 2: In other words, is his line actually giving him pretty
- 15:37Speaker 2: good pro?
- 15:39Speaker 3: Uh, I think this week it was a little bit
- 15:41Speaker 3: more shaky. Uh, you know, most places had it around
- 15:44Speaker 3: a 48% pressure rate by Pittsburgh, but it's a lot,
- 15:48Speaker 3: but he's inviting.
- 15:49Speaker 5: A lot of it on his own.
- 15:50Speaker 11: Okay.
- 15:51Speaker 3: So like some of that I think is, you know,
- 15:54Speaker 3: on Drake, like I would say all three sacks, I
- 15:57Speaker 3: could kind of put some of the blame on him.
- 16:01Speaker 3: You know, he runs right into TJ Watt.
- 16:04Speaker 4: That may have been his worst play of the game.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Yeah, like Morgan Moses is holding his block. He's anchoring
- 16:09Speaker 3: on a bull rush. He's holding his block, and Drake
- 16:12Speaker 3: May tries to vacate the back of the pocket and
- 16:14Speaker 3: just goes right into him. Like, that's not on Morgan Moses. Like,
- 16:17Speaker 3: that's on Drake May. You know, him sliding down in
- 16:20Speaker 3: the red zone and taking a sack.
- 16:21Speaker 8: With the three-man rush where he just bails out of
- 16:24Speaker 8: the pocket instantly. It's like his back pocket, back foot hits.
- 16:26Speaker 8: So three-man rush. Like, there's time.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:30Speaker 7: Right.
- 16:31Speaker 3: So I, I think it's a little bit of both,
- 16:34Speaker 3: but you know, Jared Wilson had a rough game in
- 16:36Speaker 3: this one. Obviously Van Roten comes in and has a couple,
- 16:40Speaker 3: you know, some rusty plays and things like that. You know, him,
- 16:43Speaker 3: him getting his first game action. So I think that
- 16:46Speaker 3: there was maybe a little bit more pressure this week.
- 16:49Speaker 3: But overall, that's what it feels like to me is
- 16:52Speaker 3: I think he's trying to make quicker decisions, but by
- 16:54Speaker 3: trying to make those quicker decisions, he's not letting the routes, uh,
- 16:58Speaker 3: develop down the field. Not all the time, but at
- 17:00Speaker 3: least three or four times where you're like, he just
- 17:02Speaker 3: held his water just a little bit longer on this play.
- 17:05Speaker 3: This is coming open, but he's already made the decision
- 17:08Speaker 3: to take a sack or run or something like that.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it was kind of weird.
- 17:13Speaker 8: I was watching the Saints with Tyler Shuck, who's kind
- 17:15Speaker 8: of come out of nowhere, but it was striking to
- 17:17Speaker 8: me just kind of getting to know him a little
- 17:19Speaker 8: bit and being like, he looks very comfortable in the pocket.
- 17:21Speaker 8: And a guy who's stepping up into throws and stuff,
- 17:24Speaker 8: just the comparison to what you were saying, Ev, just
- 17:28Speaker 8: feels a little off. It feels a little bit like
- 17:30Speaker 8: he's not feeling the timing. And I'm with Paul, though.
- 17:33Speaker 8: I think he can get this back. I think this is,
- 17:35Speaker 8: you know, this to me is like a defining period
- 17:38Speaker 8: of a quarterback's career. I mean, you want to go
- 17:39Speaker 8: out and shred crappy defenses.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Great. But, you know, now it gets hard.
- 17:43Speaker 8: Teams know what you like to do, and they're attacking
- 17:45Speaker 8: you in the right way.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Now, I know the Rams have a really good offensive line, right?
- 17:50Speaker 2: And the Chiefs have a pretty good one, would you say?
- 17:52Speaker 6: But it just seems to me that Stafford and Mahomes,
- 17:56Speaker 6: great quarterbacks, take a deeper drop than May.
- 18:01Speaker 2: And that might just give them that extra second or two.
- 18:04Speaker 2: to just look at things. And is that something that
- 18:06Speaker 2: he could try just, you know, a couple extra steps
- 18:09Speaker 2: in his drop?
- 18:10Speaker 3: Well, the drops are usually are designed by the play.
- 18:13Speaker 3: So the drop is timed up to the route. So
- 18:15Speaker 3: you can't, as a quarterback, just like if it's a
- 18:18Speaker 3: five step drop, you can't be taken seven steps because
- 18:21Speaker 3: it throws off the entire timing of the entire play.
- 18:24Speaker 3: So like my homes is notorious for dropping deep in
- 18:27Speaker 3: the pocket. That's like a, my home's thing is, And
- 18:30Speaker 3: I'm sure that they have responded with that by Andy
- 18:33Speaker 3: Reed designing the passing concepts for the fact that he
- 18:37Speaker 3: knows that Patrick Holmes is just going to run backwards
- 18:40Speaker 3: on a lot of plays. So that, that's the whole
- 18:42Speaker 3: thing about drops is like, you know, we hear a
- 18:44Speaker 3: lot about like the quick game snaps and some people
- 18:47Speaker 3: don't like those, but like those are pick a side,
- 18:50Speaker 3: stick a side, like you're not progressing in a quick game.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Like you're just reading one side of the field and,
- 18:56Speaker 3: and you're throwing the ball quickly. So you can't then,
- 18:59Speaker 3: if it's quick game and the tackles are cutting, you
- 19:01Speaker 3: can't then take a second-step drop or a nine-step drop
- 19:04Speaker 3: and hold the ball.
- 19:05Speaker 5: It just doesn't tie together.
- 19:07Speaker 6: Well, is May a guy that could benefit from that,
- 19:09Speaker 6: having some plays where he gets deeper and gives himself
- 19:13Speaker 6: more time?
- 19:13Speaker 8: To me, I saw more that he's not stepping up
- 19:16Speaker 8: into the pocket, and he's not being able to take
- 19:19Speaker 8: a slight step left and step into the throws.
- 19:23Speaker 2: It's a lot.
- 19:24Speaker 8: back, you know, and I don't, I, and it's the
- 19:27Speaker 8: little bit of what we said last year. It's the
- 19:28Speaker 8: drifting into pressure thing that he's, he tends to do
- 19:30Speaker 8: at times.
- 19:31Speaker 4: We had, you know, Fred, you brought up the point
- 19:34Speaker 4: in the post game show and we kind of went
- 19:36Speaker 4: back and forth a little bit. You talked about confidence
- 19:38Speaker 4: and I kind of looked at it in a different way,
- 19:41Speaker 4: but I think that's what we're talking about. I'm more
- 19:42Speaker 4: on your side, you know, in retrospect, sort of like
- 19:45Speaker 4: watching some of the throws. I know what you're talking
- 19:47Speaker 4: about now. It's not like he's, he'd believe in himself
- 19:51Speaker 4: kind of confidence. He's not step. He's not throwing with conviction.
- 19:53Speaker 4: He's not stepping. As Mike said, he's not stepping into
- 19:56Speaker 4: the pocket and letting it rip. I can't really remember
- 19:59Speaker 4: a throw. I know it's only two games that like, wow,
- 20:02Speaker 4: he just, that was a frozen rope, you know?
- 20:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:05Speaker 5: One to Matt Collins.
- 20:06Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Deep in cut second in 21. He hit him for
- 20:09Speaker 3: 19 yards in Seattle.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:11Speaker 4: That was when you got to have one off the top.
- 20:13Speaker 4: Like seriously, like that.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:16Speaker 4: The interceptions are coming because he's not like, I don't
- 20:19Speaker 4: think he's seeing it well. And I don't think he's
- 20:22Speaker 4: adjusting to it.
- 20:23Speaker 6: When you made fun of me in camp about what
- 20:25Speaker 6: I said about Drake, what did I say?
- 20:26Speaker 2: Do you remember?
- 20:28Speaker 4: When I made fun of you?
- 20:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:29Speaker 4: I don't remember making fun of you in camp, specifically.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Okay. Well, you know, it was.
- 20:33Speaker 5: It was all the time, so.
- 20:34Speaker 13: It.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Was more of snarky. It was more like, well, the
- 20:36Speaker 2: rest of us think that Drake Mays is pretty good.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Fred doesn't.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Oh, well, I was doing Fred back to you. That's
- 20:41Speaker 4: what you would do to me.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I know, I know.
- 20:43Speaker 4: I mean, I think you were making fun of me.
- 20:44Speaker 4: I mean, I think the Patriots are a good team.
- 20:45Speaker 13: Right, right.
- 20:46Speaker 2: You were making fun of me.
- 20:48Speaker 6: But it was a response to me saying, if there's
- 20:50Speaker 6: one thing I'd like to see him do, is get
- 20:52Speaker 6: the ball out of his hands a little quicker.
- 20:55Speaker 2: And I don't mean the play.
- 20:57Speaker 7: I mean.
- 20:58Speaker 2: As the guy's in his route.
- 21:00Speaker 6: I think he just waits that little extra. Throw it
- 21:04Speaker 6: where he's going to be, not where he is. You know,
- 21:07Speaker 6: we saw it with the Dobbs throw earlier. I think
- 21:10Speaker 6: he could be just a... I'm going to use your word,
- 21:12Speaker 6: a little bit more decisive and confident that I'm going
- 21:17Speaker 6: to throw to this spot and the receiver's going to
- 21:20Speaker 6: be there.
- 21:21Speaker 2: I think... I saw it in camp. I'm seeing it now. Just.
- 21:25Speaker 6: Just be more decisive with that.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Throw and just let it rip.
- 21:29Speaker 6: Let it rip and just trust that your receiver is
- 21:32Speaker 6: going to be on the route that was in the
- 21:34Speaker 6: playbook and he's going to be where the ball.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Is going to– where you're throwing it.
- 21:40Speaker 5: Does he trust them?
- 21:41Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing. You know, he's got to. He's
- 21:46Speaker 2: got to.
- 21:46Speaker 3: But I think that's what– You're talking about throwing with
- 21:50Speaker 3: anticipation and throwing guys open and things like that.
- 21:54Speaker 5: I think that comes with trust.
- 21:56Speaker 6: Is there anything that you've seen in your grinding of
- 21:58Speaker 6: the film that tells you they haven't earned his trust?
- 22:05Speaker 4: It's a good question.
- 22:06Speaker 5: I think in some instances, yeah.
- 22:11Speaker 3: But I don't want to say that to excuse Drake Bate,
- 22:14Speaker 3: absolve him. That's quarterback. That's playing quarterback. In the NFL,
- 22:20Speaker 3: they keep showing that Seattle clip of Julian Love saying
- 22:23Speaker 3: he's got to see the receiver open. Once he turns
- 22:26Speaker 3: and looks at you, it's too late. Like you can't
- 22:28Speaker 3: throw the ball. Once the receiver is looking back to
- 22:30Speaker 3: the quarterback, the ball should be on him when he
- 22:32Speaker 3: turns and comes out of the top of the route,
- 22:34Speaker 3: looking back for the quarterback. So like, I think, you know,
- 22:37Speaker 3: we were talking with Barth about, you know, Alex used
- 22:40Speaker 3: the word he's under throwing guys. And when I hear that,
- 22:44Speaker 3: I think of something physical. Like, he doesn't have the
- 22:46Speaker 3: arm strength to, like, push the ball down the field.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Or throw it off his back foot.
- 22:50Speaker 6: Right.
- 22:51Speaker 4: I think it's that.
- 22:51Speaker 3: I think that what he's doing is that he's, like,
- 22:55Speaker 3: not really throwing with conviction.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Convicted.
- 22:58Speaker 3: And so, like, he's kind of guiding the ball and
- 23:01Speaker 3: throwing off his back foot a lot and things like that.
- 23:04Speaker 3: And he's not just letting it rip. And those are, like,
- 23:06Speaker 3: two different things to me. Like, I think this is
- 23:08Speaker 3: more mental than it is physical.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Oh, no doubt.
- 23:11Speaker 4: And this is why I said, like, I initially pushed
- 23:15Speaker 4: back on your confidence thing during the post-game show, but
- 23:18Speaker 4: I understand what you're talking about a little bit more now,
- 23:20Speaker 4: and I think you're right. I think I'm wrong.
- 23:23Speaker 2: No, you're not wrong because decisiveness comes from confidence.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Again, I was taking the word confident in a literal
- 23:30Speaker 4: definition of the term, and I don't think it's a
- 23:32Speaker 4: problem with that. Like I said, I think he's too
- 23:34Speaker 4: confident at times in thinking he can get throws that
- 23:39Speaker 4: most guys wouldn't attempt. He always thinks he can make it,
- 23:42Speaker 4: but What you're talking about and what I really agree
- 23:45Speaker 4: with is what Evan just talked about. Stepping in and
- 23:48Speaker 4: letting it rip, he's not convinced. He's not sure what
- 23:51Speaker 4: he's seeing.
- 23:51Speaker 6: And that confidence comes mostly when he has time to
- 23:54Speaker 6: think about it. When he's out there playing backyard and
- 23:57Speaker 6: he's on the run and trying to make a play,
- 23:59Speaker 6: that's where you're not thinking as much and you just
- 24:02Speaker 6: let it rip.
- 24:03Speaker 4: You know, so it's... Like there's some plays and I'm like,
- 24:07Speaker 4: I'm not a big fan of this. So I try
- 24:09Speaker 4: not to do it like the whole like, oh, on
- 24:11Speaker 4: that dump down to this guy. He had that guy
- 24:14Speaker 4: wide open or this one. He totally I'm not a
- 24:16Speaker 4: big fan of those. But I just wonder if he's
- 24:19Speaker 4: not seeing the field as well as he has has
- 24:21Speaker 4: in the past. You know, a lot of people made
- 24:23Speaker 4: a lot of the dump down to Stevenson. early in
- 24:26Speaker 4: the game, that he fumbled that he had Raritan in
- 24:28Speaker 4: the seam. Maybe he did. I'm not necessarily going to that.
- 24:33Speaker 4: And the opposite was true on the one he tried
- 24:35Speaker 4: to force to Hunter Henry. He had the check down,
- 24:38Speaker 4: and Mike Vrabel said yesterday, you just got to take
- 24:40Speaker 4: the check down to Reggie. You know, that's just take
- 24:43Speaker 4: the profit again.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:44Speaker 4: So I think that he's not necessarily seeing it as
- 24:47Speaker 4: well as he did most of the time last year.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Yeah. And listen, it happens to the best of them.
- 24:52Speaker 6: I remember stretches with Tom Brady where the offensive line
- 24:56Speaker 6: in a few games weren't playing well.
- 24:58Speaker 2: And he was getting antsy in the pocket.
- 25:00Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 25:00Speaker 6: You know, I remember, you know, quite a few instances
- 25:04Speaker 6: of that. So this isn't unnatural. It's just something he's
- 25:07Speaker 6: got to have to work through. And as we all said,
- 25:10Speaker 6: he needs the support from his players, too. Line has
- 25:12Speaker 6: to be better. Receivers have to be better. You know,
- 25:16Speaker 6: as Vrabel said, you know, every play is a season.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:20Speaker 6: And there's a lot of different things that happen within
- 25:23Speaker 6: every play that make it up.
- 25:25Speaker 2: That's where I'm at.
- 25:26Speaker 8: You've got to get to the games. I think that's
- 25:28Speaker 8: the only way to get through this is to continue
- 25:30Speaker 8: to let him face new defenses, work with these offensive
- 25:33Speaker 8: pieces that he has. We'll see what things look like
- 25:35Speaker 8: this week with who's in front of him, but I
- 25:38Speaker 8: don't see it as a magic wand of like, oh, A.J.
- 25:41Speaker 8: Brown will come back and fix everything. He's got to
- 25:44Speaker 8: work this out mentally and get back to where he was.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Coaching is going to be a big part of this.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Who would you say right now.
- 25:55Speaker 6: In terms of, not the plays, but his coaching him
- 25:58Speaker 6: has the biggest.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Influence on him.
- 26:00Speaker 5: Josh McDaniels.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's got to be Josh. You think it's Josh?
- 26:02Speaker 3: Yeah, and the only concern that I have about that is, like,
- 26:07Speaker 3: I hope that not turning the ball over is not
- 26:11Speaker 3: in his head. Because I think that there's a fine
- 26:14Speaker 3: line there. You don't want to turn him into Mac
- 26:17Speaker 3: Jones either. You want him to be Drake May, and
- 26:21Speaker 3: you want him to push the ball down the field,
- 26:22Speaker 3: and you want him to try to make plays. And
- 26:24Speaker 3: right now, I feel like he's sped up. He's trying
- 26:27Speaker 3: to get the ball out too quickly. And so he's
- 26:30Speaker 3: passing on things that might actually be there for Drake may,
- 26:34Speaker 3: that might not be there for every other quarterback, but
- 26:36Speaker 3: I've seen him make those throws. You know, Paul mentions
- 26:40Speaker 3: the play to Raritan, which is my favorite play at
- 26:43Speaker 3: the leak. And he's just leaking out the back of
- 26:45Speaker 3: the formation. And I think he skipped it. Like I,
- 26:48Speaker 3: he's looking at Matt Collins over the middle of the field, uh,
- 26:51Speaker 3: who is his first read because he's trying to move
- 26:53Speaker 3: the zone. So he's staring down Matt Collins and Matt Collins.
- 26:56Speaker 3: He can throw to Matt Collins if he's wide open,
- 26:58Speaker 3: but really that's like the design of the play is
- 27:00Speaker 3: just to get the eyes on Matt Collins to move
- 27:02Speaker 3: the zone and Raritan's leaking out into the seam and
- 27:06Speaker 3: he's wide open and he just checks the ball down.
- 27:10Speaker 3: You know, he just immediately bypasses Raritan and checks.
- 27:13Speaker 5: The ball down.
- 27:13Speaker 2: What was happening in front of him at that time? Nothing.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Actually, Jared Wilson cleaned out one of the guys in
- 27:19Speaker 3: pass protection, and he had a perfectly fine pocket.
- 27:21Speaker 5: So, you know, it just.
- 27:23Speaker 3: those are the plays that worry me more than like
- 27:25Speaker 3: some of the ones that the turnovers, like the, the,
- 27:28Speaker 3: the short arms on the picks and stuff like that.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Because like, to me, that shows a quarterback. When you
- 27:33Speaker 3: start skipping reads, you're going too fast through the progression
- 27:37Speaker 3: or you're predetermining where you're going with the ball. Like
- 27:39Speaker 3: I look at the, the coverage and like, this isn't
- 27:43Speaker 3: going to be there. So I'm just not even going
- 27:44Speaker 3: to look over there, you know, that sort of thing.
- 27:46Speaker 3: And I think that there's a little bit too much
- 27:48Speaker 3: of that going on with him right now. Like just,
- 27:51Speaker 3: you got to let the plays develop and let the
- 27:54Speaker 3: routes work and let the combinations take hold to the defense,
- 27:57Speaker 3: the defenders and see if things start to open up
- 27:59Speaker 3: that way.
- 28:00Speaker 7: Okay.
- 28:00Speaker 2: All right.
- 28:01Speaker 6: We mentioned injuries because that was a big part of
- 28:03Speaker 6: the game. I think five guys left the game and
- 28:08Speaker 6: didn't return.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Yeah. Plus they, Played the game without another one, Carlton Davis.
- 28:14Speaker 2: So Mike Unwenu reports that he has a broken ankle.
- 28:19Speaker 4: Yeah, and I thought Mike Rabel all but confirmed that
- 28:22Speaker 4: yesterday in the press conference. He didn't say he broke
- 28:26Speaker 4: his ankle, but I think he said, well, you guys all,
- 28:28Speaker 4: I'm sure, saw it on TV. So he's going to
- 28:31Speaker 4: be out a while.
- 28:32Speaker 6: Draymond Jones left the game with a shoulder injury. and
- 28:36Speaker 6: went right to the locker room. To me, that said, oh,
- 28:39Speaker 6: this is pretty serious. He didn't even go into the
- 28:41Speaker 6: blue tent. But Rabel said he's going to do everything
- 28:45Speaker 6: he can to get back as soon as he can
- 28:46Speaker 6: get back.
- 28:47Speaker 2: So they didn't rule him out.
- 28:49Speaker 4: For next game. Hopefully it's like a dislocation and not
- 28:51Speaker 4: a separation. Pop it back in, and then it's a
- 28:54Speaker 4: pain tolerance.
- 28:55Speaker 2: That's what happened to neighbors last night. He said he
- 28:58Speaker 2: popped his shoulder back. That was hilarious. That, to me,
- 29:01Speaker 2: was one of the funniest things I've ever watched in
- 29:03Speaker 2: my life.
- 29:04Speaker 8: I don't mean to cheer for a guy who got
- 29:05Speaker 8: an injury, but as soon as Dart goes down, as
- 29:09Speaker 8: soon as Dart goes down, Jameis Winston comes in and
- 29:11Speaker 8: just starts spraying the ball all over the place. And then, like,
- 29:13Speaker 8: two plays later, Malik Nabors, like, in the play, you
- 29:16Speaker 8: can't tell where he gets hurt.
- 29:18Speaker 2: But he went down like his shoulder had been ripped
- 29:20Speaker 2: out of its, like, you know. It came out of its.
- 29:22Speaker 2: I literally texted Paul.
- 29:23Speaker 4: I'm like, did you see this?
- 29:24Speaker 10: Right.
- 29:25Speaker 2: And he's still riding.
- 29:26Speaker 8: So I feel bad, but I just, at the moment
- 29:28Speaker 8: I'm like, oh, that's classic Malik.
- 29:31Speaker 2: He's like, I'm not playing. I'm not doing this.
- 29:34Speaker 5: I know. Like, what are we talking about?
- 29:36Speaker 2: Just in the moment I was like, oh my God.
- 29:38Speaker 5: He's out.
- 29:38Speaker 4: So Mike sends me the text by the time. I
- 29:40Speaker 4: put it on, he was in the huddle.
- 29:42Speaker 6: Now, the thing about those dislocations, it really depends on
- 29:46Speaker 6: how far it comes out of the socket and, you know,
- 29:49Speaker 6: how much you sprain everything around it.
- 29:51Speaker 2: So we don't know. Draymond Jones' status at this point.
- 29:55Speaker 8: And I think Rap Sheet retweeted somebody from the beat
- 29:58Speaker 8: and said it doesn't sound like it's serious, a long-term
- 30:02Speaker 8: thing with Draymond Jones.
- 30:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that Mike's... I'm just reading between the
- 30:06Speaker 4: lines from Mike's press conference yesterday, and I would say
- 30:09Speaker 4: that Jones probably has a chance to play. And I
- 30:13Speaker 4: don't look at his absence as being long-term. I would say,
- 30:17Speaker 4: based on Mike's answer about the safeties, that Craig Woodson
- 30:20Speaker 4: probably isn't going to play. He didn't say that.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Now, his was a five.
- 30:25Speaker 8: Woodson was a shoulder, too.
- 30:28Speaker 4: And he mentioned Mike Brown being a guy, you know,
- 30:30Speaker 4: a veteran on the practice squad that probably is going
- 30:33Speaker 4: to be involved. They also lost Del Pettis in terms
- 30:37Speaker 4: of a depth safety. But I have less faith in
- 30:41Speaker 4: whatever knocked Woodson out of the game than Jones.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I went back and looked at that. Woodson.
- 30:46Speaker 8: He took Dottel on in the hole straight with his
- 30:48Speaker 8: left shoulder. And you could tell he was kind of
- 30:50Speaker 8: feeling it. He played one more play, was a third down,
- 30:53Speaker 8: then that was it for him. So I wonder if
- 30:55Speaker 8: he maybe– I don't remember exactly what he had wrong
- 30:57Speaker 8: this summer. But that was– he was just all of
- 31:01Speaker 8: a sudden gone, it felt like. It wasn't– Draymond Jones,
- 31:04Speaker 8: you saw him go down and go off.
- 31:07Speaker 2: And Raritan, was he– I didn't see that one. That
- 31:11Speaker 2: sounds like either a pull or a contusion.
- 31:13Speaker 4: A contusion, I heard. A contusion is my intel.
- 31:16Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 31:17Speaker 4: So again, that's, that can be painful. Yeah.
- 31:20Speaker 8: That can be a pain tolerance issue. That's just what
- 31:23Speaker 8: I hate with rookies. You know, it's, it's stay in
- 31:26Speaker 8: the lineup. Like, you know, just find a way to
- 31:28Speaker 8: get a few snaps, at least make a few plays,
- 31:31Speaker 8: stack that success.
- 31:32Speaker 5: He has a thigh contusion. He's not going to be out.
- 31:34Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 31:34Speaker 8: I hope he's, I hope he's, yeah, no, I hope
- 31:36Speaker 8: he's back out there soon, but I, you know, it's
- 31:37Speaker 8: the same way I feel about Akis. It's just, it's
- 31:40Speaker 8: also about the player gaining confidence that they can play
- 31:43Speaker 8: at this level. And, you know, the more I see
- 31:46Speaker 8: Akis and Raritan show up, I think that's really good
- 31:49Speaker 8: for them to, for their careers.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Reports that they brought in four tight ends to try
- 31:54Speaker 2: out yesterday.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:56Speaker 4: They don't have a ton of depth.
- 31:57Speaker 3: Well, they don't have a ton of depth at that spot,
- 31:59Speaker 3: like on the practice squad. And they have a ton
- 32:00Speaker 3: of depth on that spot on the roster.
- 32:03Speaker 5: They have five of them.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Uh, if you count Reggie Gilliam, but, um, you know,
- 32:06Speaker 3: because they have so many on the active roster. So I,
- 32:09Speaker 3: I don't think like Cameron lots, you played a lot, uh,
- 32:13Speaker 3: after Raritan got hurt, uh, Uh, you know, he's kind
- 32:15Speaker 3: of like now you're, you're blocking tight end. Like that's
- 32:18Speaker 3: the biggest thing I think they would miss with the
- 32:19Speaker 3: rare to not obviously the, the play down the field
- 32:21Speaker 3: is great, but, uh, he's a much better blocker than
- 32:25Speaker 3: Hunter Henry is. And they actually got Pittsburgh into their
- 32:28Speaker 3: like pure base defense a couple of times and were
- 32:30Speaker 3: able to throw down the field against base. So, uh,
- 32:33Speaker 3: that was, you know, so some like personnel matching stuff
- 32:36Speaker 3: that if teams are going to tweet, treat, uh, 12, like, uh, it's,
- 32:41Speaker 3: you know, real 12, like they can actually run the
- 32:43Speaker 3: ball out of this. Then they're going to have to
- 32:45Speaker 3: put bigger bodies on the field. And that's when the
- 32:47Speaker 3: Patriots can spread you out and throw the ball. So
- 32:50Speaker 3: that's what they were able to do a couple of
- 32:51Speaker 3: times early on in the game. And then Raritan goes
- 32:54Speaker 3: out and it kind of changes that whole mismatch that
- 32:57Speaker 3: they had created with all of that. So, I look
- 33:00Speaker 3: at the blocking ability that Raritan was bringing to the table.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Not that it was Gronk-level blocking, but it was better
- 33:06Speaker 3: than the alternative as the biggest thing that you kind
- 33:09Speaker 3: of miss from not having him if he's not available.
- 33:12Speaker 5: I think Latu, Arkin.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Those guys can do some of the other stuff, but
- 33:18Speaker 3: can they make defenses put big bodies on the field
- 33:22Speaker 3: and then exploit the fact that they put big bodies
- 33:24Speaker 3: on the field like Raritan can?
- 33:27Speaker 10: Okay.
- 33:27Speaker 2: All right.
- 33:29Speaker 6: 855-PATS-500 is the hotline. Podcasts at Patriots.com is the email address.
- 33:34Speaker 6: The phones are stacked, so let's unstack them.
- 33:38Speaker 2: We'll go to New Hampshire. Zach's there. What's up, Zach?
- 33:42Speaker 12: Hey, guys.
- 33:43Speaker 14: Thanks for taking my call.
- 33:44Speaker 15: I was just wondering, do you think with all the injuries,
- 33:47Speaker 15: they could be the type of team like the Texans
- 33:49Speaker 15: where Jaden Higgins got hurt and they traded for Kayshaun.
- 33:52Speaker 14: Booty with A.J.
- 33:54Speaker 16: Brown or Draymond Jones or somebody like that?
- 33:58Speaker 3: So you're saying to trade for somebody now because A.J.
- 34:01Speaker 3: Brown got hurt?
- 34:03Speaker 17: Yeah, like a low-round pick for a high-upside kind of guy,
- 34:06Speaker 17: kind of like what the Texans did with a seventh-rounder
- 34:08Speaker 17: for Keishon Booty or sixth-rounder.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Well, I mean, are we there yet? I mean, I
- 34:14Speaker 2: don't think we need to do that. I think the
- 34:16Speaker 2: guys that are here just need to step up a
- 34:18Speaker 2: little bit, and I think Dobbs did. I think Dobbs
- 34:21Speaker 2: had a decent game. caught the ball when he was
- 34:24Speaker 2: thrown to him. He had that one ball I thought
- 34:26Speaker 2: was thrown behind him, and I thought it was a
- 34:28Speaker 2: tougher catch than people made it out to be. But
- 34:31Speaker 2: I thought he stepped up a little bit.
- 34:34Speaker 5: It was interesting.
- 34:34Speaker 3: It felt like everybody in the press box felt like
- 34:37Speaker 3: the ball was thrown behind him, and a lot of
- 34:39Speaker 3: people that were watching on TV at home thought it
- 34:42Speaker 3: was just a blatant drop by Romeo Dobbs. So maybe
- 34:45Speaker 3: the angle that we all saw the play at made
- 34:47Speaker 3: it look.
- 34:49Speaker 3: You know, a little bit more behind. Like, watching it back,
- 34:52Speaker 3: it wasn't quite as far behind as I thought.
- 34:54Speaker 4: I would say watching it back, both were true.
- 34:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:57Speaker 4: It was thrown behind him, but he got both hands
- 34:59Speaker 4: on it.
- 35:00Speaker 2: He did, but I think....
- 35:03Speaker 6: Because we played it over and over again on the
- 35:05Speaker 6: post-game show. I think what you have to look at
- 35:07Speaker 6: is the speed in which the pass was thrown and
- 35:09Speaker 6: the speed in which Dobbs was going.
- 35:11Speaker 4: That's why I said we had a still shot of
- 35:14Speaker 4: him reaching back and the ball goes through his hands.
- 35:17Speaker 4: It looks like a blatant drop. But in real time,
- 35:20Speaker 4: that's not what happened. It's exactly what Fred said. He's
- 35:22Speaker 4: running full speed one way, the ball goes the other,
- 35:25Speaker 4: and that was one of the few balls that actually
- 35:27Speaker 4: had a little zip.
- 35:28Speaker 2: I think if he had actually reached with one hand,
- 35:31Speaker 2: he would have had a better chance of catching it
- 35:34Speaker 2: than with two hands. But, as he may, I think
- 35:38Speaker 2: he obviously had a better game than week one. It
- 35:41Speaker 2: was okay.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:43Speaker 7: So, I think.
- 35:44Speaker 2: You're going to need more out of him. And they're
- 35:47Speaker 2: going to need more out of all the receivers. Need
- 35:50Speaker 2: more out of Pop.
- 35:51Speaker 4: I thought it was weird the way the game unfolded
- 35:54Speaker 4: in terms of The targets and, you know, the passing
- 35:58Speaker 4: game in general. Now, they didn't throw the ball a
- 35:59Speaker 4: ton in the game. I think they only attempted 25 passes.
- 36:03Speaker 7: Right.
- 36:04Speaker 2: I don't even think it was that many.
- 36:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it was 22 attempts and three sacks.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Oh, okay. So you count that, right.
- 36:10Speaker 4: But there was, like, DeMario Douglas, like, comes first play
- 36:15Speaker 4: of the game, boom. Then I think he may have
- 36:17Speaker 4: been targeted one more time in the whole game.
- 36:19Speaker 7: Right.
- 36:21Speaker 4: Matt Collins, who, you know, he sort of left off
- 36:24Speaker 4: leaning on a little bit had, I think, just two
- 36:27Speaker 4: targets in the whole game. You know, and it wasn't
- 36:31Speaker 4: like Dobbs was the volume guy. I think he was
- 36:33Speaker 4: only targeted four times. The tight ends look like maybe
- 36:38Speaker 4: the Raritan thing kind of impacted. I mean, Evan, I thought,
- 36:41Speaker 4: articulated that pretty well. Maybe that was going to be
- 36:44Speaker 4: a bigger part of the game, was trying to leak.
- 36:49Speaker 4: Leak reared him down. He made one big catch. I
- 36:52Speaker 4: think there was an opportunity for at least one other,
- 36:54Speaker 4: and he didn't play that many plays. Maybe that was
- 36:57Speaker 4: a bigger part of the game plan, but I just
- 36:58Speaker 4: thought the way the targets broke down in this game.
- 37:02Speaker 4: I think Kyle Williams had two. Chisholm had one.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Well, speaking of Kyle Williams.
- 37:05Speaker 4: No one really got any volume.
- 37:07Speaker 6: I want to give Williams a lot of credit for
- 37:09Speaker 6: holding on to that ball where he just got de-cleaned.
- 37:13Speaker 2: And getting right out. Good for him. Because that's not
- 37:16Speaker 2: what he's known for. Over the middle, tough catches like that.
- 37:20Speaker 6: So I give him a lot of credit for.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Holding on to that one.
- 37:25Speaker 8: You know, listening to Paul lay it out, too, I
- 37:27Speaker 8: think part of all this, too, some of the frustration
- 37:29Speaker 8: is just, kind of hoping for the same receivers to
- 37:32Speaker 8: do new things. And we've been kind of waiting for
- 37:33Speaker 8: the same receivers to do new things for a while.
- 37:36Speaker 8: Now we're waiting for pop Douglas to do, you know,
- 37:38Speaker 8: a little bit more than he's been doing. And Romeo
- 37:40Speaker 8: Dobbs is new, but he didn't get off to a
- 37:42Speaker 8: great start. And, you know, it's just, you kind of
- 37:45Speaker 8: start wondering, am I waiting for something that's never going
- 37:47Speaker 8: to happen?
- 37:48Speaker 2: Like, am I hoping against hope that tomorrow Douglas.
- 37:50Speaker 4: Is, you know, I'm not waiting for that from Douglas,
- 37:53Speaker 4: but I think he is sort of, I think he's
- 37:56Speaker 4: progressed to more than a one target guy.
- 37:59Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 37:59Speaker 4: And, That's kind of all he was. The other target
- 38:03Speaker 4: was kind of a throwaway. Kyle Williams, to me, he's
- 38:09Speaker 4: a one or two target guy. That I understand. Douglas
- 38:13Speaker 4: and Hollins, to me, should get more than two targets.
- 38:16Speaker 4: in a game when you don't have AJ.
- 38:17Speaker 3: Brown, they're going to play man coverage. Like, cause they
- 38:20Speaker 3: opened up in man coverage in this game early and
- 38:22Speaker 3: pop was getting targeted because they were playing man to man.
- 38:24Speaker 3: I mean, he separates right over the middle on the slant, right?
- 38:27Speaker 3: To start the game. First play of the game. I, he,
- 38:31Speaker 3: it's the same thing with pop. It's kind of like
- 38:33Speaker 3: what Deuce was just saying when they play man to man,
- 38:35Speaker 3: he gets open.
- 38:36Speaker 5: Like he gets open a lot.
- 38:37Speaker 3: I thought he was open quite a bit in this
- 38:39Speaker 3: game when they played man, when they play zone, it
- 38:42Speaker 3: gets murky.
- 38:43Speaker 4: So let me just say this. Like I, This is
- 38:45Speaker 4: not a DeMario Douglas, you know, like if they had
- 38:50Speaker 4: a really productive passing game the other day and DeMario
- 38:53Speaker 4: Douglas got one target, I wouldn't say a word. Like
- 38:58Speaker 4: what they were doing was whatever you were doing wasn't working.
- 39:02Speaker 4: They weren't productive really in the passing game. especially if
- 39:06Speaker 4: you take out kind of the first drive. The first drive,
- 39:09Speaker 4: it was like boom, boom, boom, boom. Like, okay, here
- 39:12Speaker 4: we go. This is what we saw last year. And
- 39:14Speaker 4: then kind of as the game went on, it gradually
- 39:17Speaker 4: came to a halt. The best offense they had was
- 39:20Speaker 4: the first quarter. And then it kind of got worse
- 39:22Speaker 4: each quarter after that. So that's the only reason why
- 39:25Speaker 4: I bring up why Matt Collins only got two targets
- 39:28Speaker 4: or Romeo Dobbs only got four. and DeMario Douglas only got, like,
- 39:33Speaker 4: you were looking for someone to be a guy in,
- 39:37Speaker 4: I don't know, maybe it's on the receivers. Maybe it's
- 39:40Speaker 4: as simple as that.
- 39:40Speaker 3: So you think, I don't know, I guess, like, he
- 39:43Speaker 3: averaged over 10 yards an attempt.
- 39:44Speaker 4: Like, That is highly deceptive.
- 39:48Speaker 2: How is that deceptive?
- 39:49Speaker 4: Because they hit a couple of 60-yard plays.
- 39:52Speaker 5: Okay, so those don't count?
- 39:54Speaker 4: Of course they count. I just said it's deceptive. It's
- 39:56Speaker 4: not like they had an efficient passing game like they
- 39:58Speaker 4: normally do.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Okay.
- 40:00Speaker 3: I mean, it wasn't a high-volume passing game.
- 40:02Speaker 4: Yeah, that's all I'm saying. They hit a couple of
- 40:05Speaker 4: big ones.
- 40:05Speaker 5: That's different to me than efficient.
- 40:07Speaker 4: And one of them was a completely broken play.
- 40:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:11Speaker 4: I do can't remember. One of them, like the 63-yard
- 40:13Speaker 4: play was... Dobbs turned into Chris Hogan. Like, they just decided,
- 40:18Speaker 4: we're not going to cover him.
- 40:19Speaker 2: You didn't look at the offense and say, this is
- 40:20Speaker 2: a well-oiled machine.
- 40:21Speaker 4: Which is a great play. I give, you know, I
- 40:23Speaker 4: give Josh some credit for that. Just like I give
- 40:25Speaker 4: Josh a ton of credit. So I want to, like,
- 40:27Speaker 4: defend Josh a little bit.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Okay.
- 40:29Speaker 4: Because of, like, the first week and all the static
- 40:31Speaker 4: he got. So, like, all of a sudden, they sort
- 40:33Speaker 4: of switch it up a little bit in some of
- 40:35Speaker 4: the things that we had talked about. And I think
- 40:37Speaker 4: we were all in agreement. They had some success throwing
- 40:40Speaker 4: the ball in first downs. And all of a sudden,
- 40:41Speaker 4: when you do that, what happens when you run the
- 40:43Speaker 4: ball in a first down? You go 39 yards untouched. Like,
- 40:45Speaker 4: can Josh get some credit for that? Or are we
- 40:48Speaker 4: just going to say it's Trevion Henderson? And if he
- 40:50Speaker 4: just runs Trevion Henderson, that's what's going to happen. When
- 40:53Speaker 4: you dial up a play that the guy's first contact
- 40:56Speaker 4: takes place at, like, the 15-yard line on a 40-yard run,
- 41:00Speaker 4: there's got to be some– it's not just great execution,
- 41:03Speaker 4: which it was. I mean, the line just opened up
- 41:05Speaker 4: the holes. Douglas comes down and takes out two guys.
- 41:09Speaker 4: And there's one safety there who he stepped out of
- 41:11Speaker 4: a tackle. Like, that was as routine a touchdown run
- 41:14Speaker 4: as you can get. I have to give some credit
- 41:17Speaker 4: to the play caller in that. Whatever it was, Evan
- 41:20Speaker 4: could probably break it down and tell you how he
- 41:22Speaker 4: caught the Steelers in some look or whatever.
- 41:24Speaker 3: I think the biggest thing that they did... I thought
- 41:28Speaker 3: well in the run game was they spread them out more.
- 41:31Speaker 3: So they ran a lot more like runs out of
- 41:33Speaker 3: the gun. And a lot, a couple of them had
- 41:35Speaker 3: RPOs or RPOs. They had rods attached to them as well.
- 41:39Speaker 3: And on that particular play, they get a six man box.
- 41:41Speaker 3: They get the safeties back. They're in a too high
- 41:44Speaker 3: safety shell. They're Drake maze in the shotgun. Uh, they
- 41:47Speaker 3: ran dart, dart, you know, just the tackle pole from
- 41:49Speaker 3: the backside.
- 41:51Speaker 7: Yeah. Dart.
- 41:52Speaker 4: Uh, you know, I know I'm confused with darty.
- 41:54Speaker 5: That's a different, I know Fred likes to smoke.
- 41:56Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 41:57Speaker 3: No, dash is what they ran on the 63-yarder. Dart
- 42:02Speaker 3: is what this play is called. It's just power, but
- 42:05Speaker 3: instead of the backside guard pulling the tackle poles. And
- 42:08Speaker 3: they just got a favorable box. They got six guys
- 42:10Speaker 3: in the box, too high safety.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Everybody likes a favorable box.
- 42:14Speaker 4: I was going to say it, but I thought maybe
- 42:15Speaker 4: I'd be a little more appropriate.
- 42:16Speaker 3: But that's what it's all about. Like that's what we
- 42:19Speaker 3: were talking about in the, in the first week. Like
- 42:21Speaker 3: it's about getting those advantages, right? It's about finding ways
- 42:25Speaker 3: to either, you know, are we going to spread them
- 42:27Speaker 3: out to get guys out of the box or are
- 42:28Speaker 3: we going to motion guys to get guys out of
- 42:30Speaker 3: the box? Are we going to run RPOs to get guys?
- 42:33Speaker 3: Like you got to find ways to basically just get
- 42:36Speaker 3: numbers in the offenses in favor in the run game.
- 42:39Speaker 3: It's all, all the run game is, is, is math.
- 42:42Speaker 3: It's just how many blockers do we have to block?
- 42:45Speaker 3: How many guys in the box? And I did think,
- 42:47Speaker 3: and when you have.
- 42:48Speaker 2: A favorable box, you want to stay in there for.
- 42:50Speaker 4: A while, right? So, you know, one of the things
- 42:51Speaker 4: we talked about, everybody focuses on like the turnover ratio.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Very good.
- 42:56Speaker 4: You know, being the key to win, I'm just going
- 42:58Speaker 4: to move on. The key to winning is, you know,
- 43:00Speaker 4: you win the turnover battle level. And that's obviously true.
- 43:03Speaker 4: I mean, it's the numbers speak for themselves, but a
- 43:06Speaker 4: lot of coaches, and we were talking about this last week,
- 43:09Speaker 4: They're talking about the plays that Evan's talking about now. Like,
- 43:12Speaker 4: so you run the dash play where, you know, Drake
- 43:16Speaker 4: does a great job of getting out, letting Dobbs get
- 43:20Speaker 4: down the field. You get a 63-yard chunk. Those explosive plays,
- 43:24Speaker 4: I think the Patriots, you said they had six, right?
- 43:26Speaker 14: Yes.
- 43:27Speaker 4: Well, Pittsburgh had one. So that's plus five in the
- 43:30Speaker 4: explosive play category. A lot of coaches would tell you,
- 43:32Speaker 4: you win that and you win most games.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 43:36Speaker 4: And that was obviously not competitive in this game. That's
- 43:38Speaker 4: how the Patriots won. Their defense was dominant. And their
- 43:41Speaker 4: offense had a couple of chunk plays that led to points.
- 43:45Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 43:46Speaker 4: Because they couldn't really sustain anything. I guess efficiency is
- 43:49Speaker 4: not the right word. I think he was 14 for 22. So,
- 43:52Speaker 4: I mean, that's probably... That's reasonably efficient. I just think
- 43:55Speaker 4: the passing game kind of sucked. They had a couple
- 44:00Speaker 4: of big plays, and that led to points. And in
- 44:02Speaker 4: this game, that was enough. 13 points was enough.
- 44:05Speaker 3: The big plays were good. The stuff around the big
- 44:09Speaker 3: plays was not good. I guess when you talk about
- 44:14Speaker 3: the three things that decide games the most... Dropback efficiency,
- 44:18Speaker 3: whether you're doing it with passer rating, EPA, whatever, just
- 44:21Speaker 3: discrepancy in dropback, which they killed the Steelers in this
- 44:24Speaker 3: game because of how bad Rodgers was in the game.
- 44:28Speaker 3: Explosive plays, turnovers. Those are the three things that the
- 44:32Speaker 3: formula is. If you win those three things, you win
- 44:35Speaker 3: 90 plus percent of games, something like that.
- 44:39Speaker 5: So they.
- 44:41Speaker 2: in all three, right?
- 44:42Speaker 5: Yeah. Well, they tied turnovers, right?
- 44:45Speaker 2: It's 2-2.
- 44:45Speaker 4: 2-2 in turnovers.
- 44:47Speaker 3: Because they didn't land on the freaking fumble that ended
- 44:49Speaker 3: up being a 40-yard loss. But yeah, that's why I
- 44:54Speaker 3: guess maybe I'm a little bit more optimistic about what
- 44:57Speaker 3: I saw from the past.
- 44:58Speaker 4: Oh, you missed my optimistic part of the show.
- 45:00Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 45:01Speaker 3: Because I think they're close. I don't think that this
- 45:03Speaker 3: is like, oh, you know, they can't move the ball
- 45:06Speaker 3: at all. I think that this is like, they moved
- 45:10Speaker 3: the ball, they hit some explosives and then Drake may
- 45:13Speaker 3: through a pick on the very next play or they
- 45:15Speaker 3: move the ball, they hit an explosive and then Morgan
- 45:18Speaker 3: Moses false starts. Second downs, a run to nowhere, third downs,
- 45:22Speaker 3: a sack. And now we're kicking a field goal, right?
- 45:24Speaker 3: Like that, that's not, they were in the red zone.
- 45:27Speaker 3: They were in, you know, at six yard line, right?
- 45:29Speaker 3: They just move backwards. And like, there's too much of
- 45:32Speaker 3: that going on where they hit a big play and
- 45:34Speaker 3: then they turn the ball over. They hit the big
- 45:36Speaker 3: play and then they go backwards.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Sean's been holding on, it looks like, since Sunday night.
- 45:40Speaker 2: What's up, Sean?
- 45:41Speaker 16: Hey, Evan. I don't know if you fasted yesterday, but
- 45:46Speaker 16: if you did, I hope you had a good one.
- 45:48Speaker 16: I have two things, one on offense and one on defense.
- 45:53Speaker 16: Josh McDaniels listening to Paul is great, and I hope
- 45:57Speaker 16: it moves forward and we get more opportunities with Sean.
- 46:02Speaker 16: smaller boxes. But I'm wondering, you know, if they tried
- 46:07Speaker 16: something like 22 personnel play action, if that would work.
- 46:11Speaker 16: And in terms of defense, I love the defensive game
- 46:14Speaker 16: plan that they played. Patriots were amazing on defense. The
- 46:19Speaker 16: only player that the Steelers had that I thought was
- 46:22Speaker 16: kind of impressive because he actually made a play against
- 46:25Speaker 16: with tight coverage from Gonzo was Jeremy Bernard. And I wonder,
- 46:29Speaker 16: is that another like second round Steelers pass catcher that's
- 46:34Speaker 16: Or is it also maybe something of the Patriots game
- 46:39Speaker 16: plan of not really preparing for that? So I'll leave
- 46:42Speaker 16: you with that. And, yeah, thanks a lot.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Go Pats. Okay. Thanks, Sean. I think he's good. I mean,
- 46:47Speaker 2: that was his first real game action.
- 46:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I didn't play because of Michael Pittman.
- 46:52Speaker 2: We'll see. I mean, highly touted coming out. A lot
- 46:54Speaker 2: of people really liked him a lot.
- 46:55Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of comparisons to those Niners, Rams, gluey
- 47:00Speaker 3: type of receivers. Tough guy, runs good routes, good with
- 47:03Speaker 3: the ball in his hands. But really, highly touted guy,
- 47:08Speaker 3: like you said. A lot of people really liked him
- 47:09Speaker 3: in the draft.
- 47:10Speaker 2: Herms in D.C. What's up, Herm?
- 47:14Speaker 10: Hey, what's going on, gentlemen?
- 47:18Speaker 14: So, before I'm getting ready to say what I'm getting
- 47:22Speaker 14: ready to say, I just want to clarify. Did somebody
- 47:25Speaker 14: call in on Sunday and suggest to.
- 47:29Speaker 19: Bench or even trade Drake Gay?
- 47:32Speaker 14: No.
- 47:32Speaker 2: No one called in and said that.
- 47:34Speaker 4: Someone said that they should think about sitting him.
- 47:39Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 47:39Speaker 4: No one said to trade him. I didn't hear anybody
- 47:41Speaker 4: say trade him. I thought someone called in and said
- 47:43Speaker 4: that if it wasn't if they had a situation where
- 47:46Speaker 4: they had an option, that they should be thinking about
- 47:49Speaker 4: sitting him. Didn't someone say that?
- 47:52Speaker 2: Someone, I think, kind of did.
- 47:53Speaker 12: Okay.
- 47:53Speaker 4: Just want to make sure I wasn't misremembering.
- 47:55Speaker 14: Okay, well, I mean, whoever said that they need to
- 48:01Speaker 14: get the head examined to the obstetrician because I.
- 48:03Speaker 12: Think, and it's weird because.
- 48:08Speaker 14: Tom Brady is like the best thing, in a way,
- 48:10Speaker 14: the worst thing that happened to the Patriots because it's,
- 48:14Speaker 14: Every quarterback is obviously probably held to those standards, but
- 48:19Speaker 14: the reality is the road to prosperity is, like, different for.
- 48:24Speaker 18: Each quarterback, right?
- 48:25Speaker 14: For example, John Elway got drafted in 83, didn't win
- 48:30Speaker 14: a Super Bowl until, what, 98? Josh Allen still hasn't
- 48:34Speaker 14: been to a Super Bowl. He didn't get drafted in 18.
- 48:38Speaker 14: And Peyton Manning, who threw, what, 25 interceptions his rookie year?
- 48:44Speaker 14: got drafted in 98, and didn't win a Super Bowl
- 48:47Speaker 14: until 06. So I guess my point is, Drake May
- 48:51Speaker 14: is fine. You can't say that he had two bad games.
- 48:56Speaker 14: But for all these people to jump ship and act
- 48:59Speaker 14: like he is the second coming of Mac Jones, it's
- 49:01Speaker 14: just like... In fairness, one guy jumped ship.
- 49:06Speaker 4: One guy said that. I didn't hear that. One guy
- 49:09Speaker 4: said that they should sit him. I didn't hear that, like,
- 49:11Speaker 4: in the post-game show by anybody else.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Well, listen, if you want to jump ship, jump ship.
- 49:15Speaker 2: See you later.
- 49:16Speaker 7: Bye-bye.
- 49:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I'm just trying to be.
- 49:19Speaker 2: Thanks, Herm.
- 49:19Speaker 4: I'm just trying to be honest about this. Like, I
- 49:21Speaker 4: think people have been critical of the offense. I think
- 49:24Speaker 4: people have been critical of May. I think people have
- 49:26Speaker 4: used the word he's regressed. in these first two games.
- 49:30Speaker 4: I haven't heard people calling for his job. I haven't
- 49:33Speaker 4: heard people saying they shouldn't pay him that contract. They're
- 49:35Speaker 4: crazy if they pay him a contract like that. I
- 49:38Speaker 4: haven't heard people saying they should redo the whole offense.
- 49:41Speaker 4: One guy suggested that he should sit.
- 49:44Speaker 7: Right?
- 49:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:45Speaker 4: And it might even have been before you came on
- 49:46Speaker 4: the show, Fred, before you made it down. It might
- 49:48Speaker 4: have been early.
- 49:49Speaker 20: Yeah.
- 49:50Speaker 4: But I haven't really heard a groundswell of they should
- 49:53Speaker 4: bench his ass. I haven't heard that.
- 49:57Speaker 5: You haven't been on Twitter.
- 49:58Speaker 6: Let's take a break and maybe when we come back
- 49:59Speaker 6: on the other side, maybe somebody will actually say that.
- 50:02Speaker 5: Part of the job.

- 52:38Speaker 16: If Draymond is out for a while, would you feel
- 52:40Speaker 16: the need to add on, or are you comfortable?
- 52:43Speaker 24: Well, I mean, again, we have to look at all
- 52:45Speaker 24: those things. I don't know how he's going to progress
- 52:47Speaker 24: during the week. I know he wasn't able to finish
- 52:49Speaker 24: the game, obviously. He'll do everything he can to be ready.
- 52:53Speaker 24: And if he's not, then we'll have to have, you know,
- 52:58Speaker 24: you know, alternate plans.
- 53:02Speaker 10: It was a situation where he's done for the season.
- 53:04Speaker 24: Well, again, I don't think he'll be available here in
- 53:06Speaker 24: the short term. So I wouldn't anticipate him being out
- 53:11Speaker 24: there here in the next few weeks. So if that
- 53:14Speaker 24: changes and it ends up being longer than that, then
- 53:17Speaker 24: we'll let you guys know.
- 53:19Speaker 4: I consider having Caleb Lomu try to move inside the guard?
- 53:23Speaker 7: Again, there's a lot of things that we could look at.
- 53:25Speaker 24: Caleb's been trying to predominantly practice and be there and
- 53:30Speaker 24: be ready to go and play and tackle. So we've
- 53:33Speaker 24: got some guys that we could move in there, and
- 53:34Speaker 24: Caleb would be one of the guys that we could
- 53:36Speaker 24: possibly do that. But again, we just have to make
- 53:40Speaker 24: sure that we have the best five available and then
- 53:44Speaker 24: the other three guys that are versatile on game day.
- 53:46Speaker 15: I didn't know that.
- 53:48Speaker 2: How do you feel Greg stepped up?
- 53:50Speaker 24: He had a few plays that he'd like to have back,
- 53:53Speaker 24: so would everybody. I thought he had some positive plays. Again,
- 53:59Speaker 24: to go through an entire game, there's going to be
- 54:02Speaker 24: some good ones and some bad ones and some ones.
- 54:05Speaker 7: That we have to eliminate.
- 54:06Speaker 24: I think that he stepped in there, was ready to go,
- 54:11Speaker 24: and then we'll have to figure out who's the next guy.
- 54:13Speaker 24: If it's Greg, then make sure that he's ready to
- 54:17Speaker 24: go to work with Morgan and Jared as possible.
- 54:21Speaker 4: Mike, back at Drake and his interception, do you feel
- 54:24Speaker 4: like that ball was tipped?
- 54:27Speaker 24: I don't think so. Again, I didn't slow it down.
- 54:30Speaker 24: I think that when the linebacker drops that deep, we
- 54:33Speaker 24: should probably just get it down to Reggie. I think
- 54:36Speaker 24: he realizes that and knows that. Those are the decisions
- 54:41Speaker 24: that the quarterback makes. Those are the decisions that Drake
- 54:43Speaker 24: makes and Again, if they get us and they're that
- 54:49Speaker 24: far off in coverage and he panics that far, then
- 54:52Speaker 24: we have to go somewhere else with the ball.
- 54:55Speaker 21: To settle a little bit in the pocket, it seems
- 54:57Speaker 21: like there were times in the game where maybe he
- 55:00Speaker 21: bailed when it was clean.
- 55:03Speaker 24: I think there's a balance. I think you have to
- 55:05Speaker 24: be able to keep your eyes down the field. I
- 55:07Speaker 24: think you have to be able to slide and move
- 55:08Speaker 24: in the pocket and transfer. I think it also comes
- 55:10Speaker 24: down to to blocking better, more consistently. And so that
- 55:18Speaker 24: there's a confidence and a trust and that everybody knows
- 55:21Speaker 24: that the other guy's doing his job to make the
- 55:24Speaker 24: play work. And, you know, we have to be able
- 55:29Speaker 24: to do that offensively for 11 guys and have an
- 55:33Speaker 24: urgency and have a unit that, you know, whatever the
- 55:36Speaker 24: protection is and then the quarterback knows where the issues
- 55:38Speaker 24: is and then if the receiver has to sight adjust,
- 55:42Speaker 24: they sight adjust. Or, you know, if we get a
- 55:44Speaker 24: three-man rush, that we have the ability to stay in
- 55:47Speaker 24: the pocket and let things.
- 55:48Speaker 7: Progress and buy some time. So it all works together.
- 55:54Speaker 24: And I think that that's something that Drake has done.
- 55:57Speaker 24: I think that's something that we've all done at times.
- 56:00Speaker 24: And then if he feels like it's man coverage, you know,
- 56:03Speaker 24: and he feels like he can run, then go and
- 56:05Speaker 24: be aggressive. And, you know, he did that a few
- 56:08Speaker 24: times yesterday, and then there's probably a few times that
- 56:10Speaker 24: he probably could have manipulated the pocket as well.
- 56:14Speaker 2: Aaron asked you about Draymond. You also had two guys
- 56:18Speaker 2: go out at safety, sort of a double hit. And what, I.
- 56:24Speaker 24: Mean, again, I mean, we're looking at Dell for, for
- 56:27Speaker 24: an ankle and, you know, making sure that we have
- 56:31Speaker 24: guys on the practice squad. I think some of the
- 56:32Speaker 24: veteran practice squad guys are, are going to factor in
- 56:35Speaker 24: this week. And I know that, you know, Mike Brown's
- 56:37Speaker 24: been with us since the spring and, I think that's
- 56:40Speaker 24: the balance that you wage.
- 56:41Speaker 7: With the practice squad. We've talked about that.
- 56:43Speaker 24: You have some young guys that you're looking to develop,
- 56:45Speaker 24: some veteran guys that have played in games that are
- 56:48Speaker 24: preparing as a starter and that will be ready to go.
- 56:52Speaker 7: As the week unfolds, we'll have to make sure that
- 56:54Speaker 7: everybody is ready to go.
- 56:57Speaker 24: If guys can't end up making it, then however we
- 57:01Speaker 24: sign guys or elevate guys.
- 57:03Speaker 2: How has Galen Reed done in terms of his getting
- 57:06Speaker 2: acclimated to the system since he got here?
- 57:08Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I think Jalen's done a nice job.
- 57:10Speaker 7: He's worked hard. You know, he got put in there,
- 57:13Speaker 7: and again, we have to be.
- 57:14Speaker 24: Ready to go. Some plays that are good. He's helped
- 57:17Speaker 24: us in the kicking game. He'd go in there and pee-pee.
- 57:18Speaker 24: That's not an easy thing to do. So I'm glad
- 57:21Speaker 24: that he was prepared and ready to go.
- 57:22Speaker 3: How important is it to have a guy like Kevin
- 57:24Speaker 3: Byard in those type of situations, in a room like that,
- 57:28Speaker 3: when Jalen.
- 57:28Speaker 9: Hasn't been here that long, you know, traded for, and
- 57:31Speaker 9: then kind of thrown into a situation like that, how
- 57:33Speaker 9: important is just to have that veteran leadership?
- 57:35Speaker 24: Well, I mean, with Kevin, it's, it's the, the communication
- 57:37Speaker 24: at every position is critical. And so how you work
- 57:40Speaker 24: with the guy next to you, how do you help
- 57:42Speaker 24: somebody else do their job better is something that we
- 57:44Speaker 24: can all focus on, whether that's an offensive lineman, that's
- 57:47Speaker 24: a defensive lineman, or, you know, two safeties that's reminding
- 57:51Speaker 24: each other what the call is or the coverage and
- 57:53Speaker 24: the adjustment.
- 57:55Speaker 2: The pressure Drake was under yesterday impacted his footwork at all.
- 58:00Speaker 7: Um, I mean, I think that there were a few
- 58:03Speaker 7: pressures and there was a few.
- 58:04Speaker 24: Times where, you know, we had them blocked and then,
- 58:08Speaker 24: you know, I mean, I thought Travion blocked well when
- 58:11Speaker 24: asked to go in there. You know, I mean, again,
- 58:15Speaker 24: footwork is about fundamentals. Those are fundamentals of the position
- 58:19Speaker 24: and making sure that, you know, you kind of feel
- 58:22Speaker 24: the rush, but you're seeing the coverage and making sure
- 58:24Speaker 24: that that's something that's important and finding windows to throw.
- 58:28Speaker 24: You know, we knew that they were going to be
- 58:30Speaker 24: able to, you know, we had Hunter another time, and again,
- 58:34Speaker 24: they got, you know, Hayward got some push in there
- 58:36Speaker 24: and got his hand up.
- 58:37Speaker 7: And tipped a pass.
- 58:39Speaker 24: You know, so again, it's about knowing how to manipulate
- 58:43Speaker 24: the rush sometimes and, you know, knowing where you want
- 58:47Speaker 24: to go with the football and being decisive.
- 58:50Speaker 15: What are your thoughts on how Jared Wilson has fared
- 58:52Speaker 15: so far at center?
- 58:54Speaker 24: I think that wasn't one of Jared's better games yesterday.
- 58:57Speaker 24: You know, there was some times where he has to
- 58:59Speaker 24: hold up in the middle and pass rush. But I
- 59:03Speaker 24: also know that sometimes when we break those runs and
- 59:05Speaker 24: he's at the second level and getting guys covered up, that.
- 59:10Speaker 24: He's at the point of those attacks as well. So
- 59:12Speaker 24: I think he can protect better. I know he can
- 59:14Speaker 24: protect better. I've seen him protect better.
- 59:19Speaker 7: But they also had a lot of really good, nice
- 59:21Speaker 7: blocks when we ran a football and we broke through
- 59:23Speaker 7: there and was able to get to the second level.
- 59:26Speaker 2: Mike, are you seeing.
- 59:28Speaker 13: Repeat looks from opposing defenses or does it feel like
- 59:33Speaker 13: teams are, you know, sort of copycatting each other when,
- 59:35Speaker 13: if they have success against you guys defensively?
- 59:39Speaker 24: I mean, I think there's only so many different options
- 59:40Speaker 24: that you have. I mean, there's only so many different,
- 59:43Speaker 24: you know, I mean, it's like they, some base, some quarters,
- 59:46Speaker 24: some post safety zone played, played some man, you know,
- 59:51Speaker 24: they brought the will, they brought the star, you know,
- 59:54Speaker 24: I mean, again, I just, that's kind of what they do.
- 59:57Speaker 24: Most teams are, you know, have those same options available
- 1:00:01Speaker 24: to them. So, you know, a lot of the things
- 1:00:03Speaker 24: that happened yesterday offensively, those were up to us. You know,
- 1:00:09Speaker 24: we stall, we hit big plays, and then we have
- 1:00:11Speaker 24: a penalty in the red zone, which is hard to overcome.
- 1:00:14Speaker 24: We hit a big play, we have a delay game.
- 1:00:16Speaker 24: You know, we turn the football over, we've got a guy,
- 1:00:20Speaker 24: you know, open, and then we check it down and
- 1:00:22Speaker 24: turn the ball over.
- 1:00:23Speaker 7: So a lot of those things that we did, the
- 1:00:28Speaker 7: lack of success, the continued success, consistent success, was due
- 1:00:34Speaker 7: to us.
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: To go back to him, just to clarify, I guess,
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: was it a broken ankle?
- 1:00:42Speaker 7: Did he break it? He hurt his ankle. Mike hurt
- 1:00:44Speaker 7: his ankle. I think you guys could see that on
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: the TV.
- 1:00:49Speaker 21: You mentioned wide receiver group. How did they fare with A.J.
- 1:00:52Speaker 7: Being out?
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: I know obviously they got the second half of the
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: last game, basically.
- 1:00:56Speaker 21: But how did they sort of adjust to some of
- 1:00:58Speaker 21: the things that you want to do?
- 1:01:00Speaker 24: Well, I mean, for the most part, I thought we,
- 1:01:03Speaker 24: you know, made good decisions. I thought we caught the ball.
- 1:01:05Speaker 24: I think, you know, Drake can help Romeo. Romeo can
- 1:01:08Speaker 24: help Drake, I think. You know, I mean, those are
- 1:01:11Speaker 24: bang-bang plays on a slant. You know, Pop made a
- 1:01:16Speaker 24: good decision getting in there, a lot of space early
- 1:01:18Speaker 24: in the game. You know, so, I mean, Pop had to,
- 1:01:23Speaker 24: you know, played the block that sprung Travion. So, again,
- 1:01:28Speaker 24: those guys, their job is to be versatile, move around.
- 1:01:32Speaker 24: We had, you know, put guys in different spots based on,
- 1:01:35Speaker 24: you know, Eli coming out of the game early on. So,
- 1:01:39Speaker 24: you know, making sure that everybody's, you know, where they
- 1:01:41Speaker 24: need to be. But, you know, I mean, we had
- 1:01:44Speaker 24: a couple plays down the field. Rome had, you know,
- 1:01:46Speaker 24: a couple plays. Trey kept his eyes up on third down, extended,
- 1:01:49Speaker 24: hit that play, you know, I mean, again, we'll keep
- 1:01:54Speaker 24: looking for opportunities. Kyle had a huge third down conversion,
- 1:01:57Speaker 24: you know, got drilled.
- 1:02:02Speaker 7: And converted.
- 1:02:02Speaker 24: So I think when we get some opportunities, just take
- 1:02:05Speaker 24: advantage of them, and I think we did for the
- 1:02:07Speaker 24: most part.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: It's Legal Seafood's Fresh Take of the Week. Da-na, da-na, da-na, mmm, yummy, mmm.
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: My time, Mike.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: Smells like something fresh.
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: Can we get a one shot on Pauly?
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: You know what I smell? I smell an offensive coordinator
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: who's been listening to our shows. Josh McDaniels, thank you
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: for changing things up ever so slightly in week two.
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: I was really critical of all of the first down
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: runs into the middle of the line. And we saw
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: a little bit of a change. I don't think it
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: was perfect. I don't think the play calling all of
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: a sudden, you know, was lighting up the school board.
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: They weren't scoring 35 points or anything but baby steps.
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: I thought the first down passes in all seriousness were
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: a welcome change to the approach. Now, I'm sure knowing
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: Josh McDaniels, it's going to be game plan related every week.
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: So it might go right back in week three in Jacksonville.
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: But I did like some of the changes. And you
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: end up with some really productive plays down. Get big
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: play in the running game. Two big plays in the
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: running game. A couple of big plays in the passing game.
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: Great job by Josh McDaniels listening to Patriots Unfiltered in pre-
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: and post-game show. Thanks, Josh.
- 1:03:27Speaker 8: I knew we were excited when the first play of
- 1:03:29Speaker 8: the game, they went spread and just threw it right
- 1:03:30Speaker 8: to pop, and you stood up with a slow clap
- 1:03:33Speaker 8: in the press box, and I was like, oh.
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: Did I make a spectacle of myself with that?
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: I was a little performative.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: Thank you, Josh.
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: A little performative.
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: So they had 14 first-down passes. I'm reading from Game Observations,
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: by the way, if you want to check that out
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: on Patriots.com. 14 first-down passes to 10 runs. And on
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: their first down passes, they averaged 8.9 yards per attempt.
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: So they were throwing it, and they were throwing it
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: well on first down. First play to pop was Haas,
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: which is great to see. Always good to dust that
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: one off. And, yeah, it was more aggressive, if you
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: want to use that word, which is.
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: Good to see.
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: Let's get back to your emails and calls.
- 1:04:15Speaker 6: 855-PASS-500 is the hotline. Podcasts at Patriots.com is the email address.
- 1:04:22Speaker 6: Rob in Willimantic says, on Drake's interception against the Steelers,
- 1:04:26Speaker 6: there's a Zapruder film online that supposedly shows the ball
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: getting tipped.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: Have you seen this? And if yes, what are your thoughts?
- 1:04:33Speaker 6: Either way, I'm not sure it was the right decision
- 1:04:35Speaker 6: at the time.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: Never open.
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: I was just going to say this. I don't think
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: the ball was tipped. I've seen it a million times.
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: But I don't really care if it was or not.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Even if it was, the quarterback's got to look for
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: those lanes and be aware.
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: Well, there's a guy in his face. Yeah. That's why
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: you can't throw that pass.
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: Well, Patrick Queen is also....
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: The safety's over the top. Queen's under the route. Even
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: if he's got a perfect pocket.
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: But if you can't step in, there's no way you're
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: doing what you did to the Chargers last year when
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: they had a really good bracket coverage, but he ripped
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: it in. With a guy on your face, you can't
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: physically make the throw. So I don't really care if
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: it was tipped or not. I agree with everything Evan said,
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: and so did Mike Vrabel, who said, we need to
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: check that one down to Reggie. I, uh, I, I don't,
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: he said he did after the game.
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: I'm not sure he saw Patrick queen dropping, or maybe
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: he just didn't think Patrick queen was going to get
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: as much depth as he did in the drop. But like,
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: I thought, you know, cause Henry's running across the field
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: on a crossing route. And the post safety is catching
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: him in the middle of the field. And like, if
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: you don't see the linebacker underneath, you could technically just
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: kind of lob it on the other side of the
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: post safety and give Henry a chance. But the linebacker is,
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: I mean, queen is, is right there.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: What I saw, even if queen wasn't there, the ball
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: was under thrown.
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: The ball was under thrown, but like the decision, like it,
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: to me, it's more of the decision than the throw.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: Like the, like he's never open. Like he's, he's, Throwing
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: the ball into double coverage, essentially. I wasn't as worried
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: about the fact that he underthrew it. I was more
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: worried about where was he going.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: Tim writes in.
- 1:06:12Speaker 6: He says, in the past calendar year, the Patriots have
- 1:06:14Speaker 6: lost to two teams, the Bills and the Seahawks, a
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: total of three games in the calendar year. Given that
- 1:06:21Speaker 6: playoffs and playoff teams are always tough and always close,
- 1:06:25Speaker 6: The Patriots still prevailed in three or four playoff games
- 1:06:28Speaker 6: last year. Quite frankly, two out of those three losses
- 1:06:32Speaker 6: could definitely have been wins, a blown big lead against Buffalo,
- 1:06:36Speaker 6: and a game won this year. Question, does Drake May
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: have a fastball? I've only seen really one instance of it,
- 1:06:43Speaker 6: the pass to Diggs against Houston for a touchdown in
- 1:06:46Speaker 6: the playoffs. We see ropes thrown by other quarterbacks like
- 1:06:49Speaker 6: Nick Starnell, etc. Does Drake have that in his repertoire?
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: I think he does.
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: You're going back to last year and you didn't see
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: any fastballs?
- 1:06:57Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: Like that one that I'm talking about to Hunter Henry
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: with Derwin James coming over. I still marvel at that throw.
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: That was an unbelievable throw that he ripped.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: I just, I think it goes back to what you said, Paul.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: It's just, he's, he's not feeling it right now.
- 1:07:11Speaker 8: You know, he doesn't have the conviction and the confidence
- 1:07:13Speaker 8: to step into it and deliver those kinds of throws.
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: You know, I would also say like, I'd rather him
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: throw a catchable ball than throw fastballs. So like, sometimes
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: you need to throw a fastball, but like, you know,
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: on the first big play of the game to Hunter Henry,
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: he's got like two, three yards of separation.
- 1:07:29Speaker 5: That doesn't need to be a fastball. That needs to
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: be on him.
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: You know, you know, I don't want to open up
- 1:07:36Speaker 6: any conspiracy theories, but did we ever get an explanation
- 1:07:39Speaker 6: of what his injury was last year, Drake May, with
- 1:07:42Speaker 6: his arm?
- 1:07:43Speaker 8: No, I think the speculation was like a low-grade shoulder separation.
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: Separation?
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: AC joint sprain.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: Yeah, AC joint sprain.
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: I would say it would be.
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: And the only explanation we got was that he said
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: he didn't need surgery. Right.
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: I know that.
- 1:07:58Speaker 14: Okay.
- 1:08:00Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: So it wasn't serious enough to get surgery.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: And he's not Chad Pennington. Oh, no, he didn't.
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: I mean, that was multiple surgeries.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: I know, I know. I don't know.
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: I don't feel like that's it.
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: I don't think it's it either. I think Fred, on Sunday, again,
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: back to our confidence thing, I think Fred has it.
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: I don't think he's throwing with, I don't think he's
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: understanding or knowing exactly what he's seeing all the time.
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: And he's not stepping in and letting it, you know,
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: just letting it flow. When he's off, like, The play
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: that Evan's talking about, what do you call it, Dash? Yes.
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: That's like right in his wheelhouse. He's out of the pocket,
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: he's moving, he's being an athlete. That's when he's at
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: his best. And then he throws it 50 yards downfield. Now,
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: even that was a little slightly underthrown, but he's so
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: wide open, you just want to make sure that you
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: don't miss the play. That's a 60-yard play that was really,
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: really well designed. Everything about that play was perfect, Uh,
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: right down to the fact that.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: The Steelers, Sabaz in North Carolina, what's up?
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: Good flood concept.
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:04Speaker 11: Hey there gentlemen. It's always a pleasure listening to you guys. I,
- 1:09:07Speaker 11: you know, I was on great May last week. I
- 1:09:09Speaker 11: was very harsh with him, but I'm telling him, we
- 1:09:10Speaker 11: gotta let, we just got, I know.
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: What's going on now.
- 1:09:13Speaker 11: And I'm agreeing, I think with the Fred about the
- 1:09:14Speaker 11: confidence thing, but it's not, Drake May's confidence. Guys, it
- 1:09:18Speaker 11: is the team's fault. You took away Diggs. You took
- 1:09:21Speaker 11: away Booty. He loved those guys. Diggs elevated Drake May mentally.
- 1:09:26Speaker 11: He always was talking to him on the sideline. Let's go.
- 1:09:28Speaker 19: I've got your back.
- 1:09:29Speaker 11: You can trust me. I'm going to catch the ball.
- 1:09:32Speaker 11: Now with these A.J. Brown, who barely lasted, and then Dobbs,
- 1:09:36Speaker 11: it's like Drake May has to elevate them and tell
- 1:09:38Speaker 11: them to stay confident. I don't like what I'm seeing.
- 1:09:41Speaker 11: I think that he is hesitant, but he does not
- 1:09:43Speaker 11: trust his receivers. And then we got, he goes deep,
- 1:09:46Speaker 11: and it's bad. Something happens.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: Well, he should have went underneath.
- 1:09:48Speaker 13: He goes underneath.
- 1:09:49Speaker 11: Something okay happens. The running back fumbles the ball, and
- 1:09:53Speaker 11: you still blame Drake May. He should have went deep.
- 1:09:55Speaker 11: He had somebody else open. The poor guy is being
- 1:09:58Speaker 11: just yanked and yanked. Let him play. And people need
- 1:10:02Speaker 11: to tell him, hey, you're going to make mistakes.
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: It's okay.
- 1:10:05Speaker 11: But now I feel like since he's the captain... He
- 1:10:09Speaker 11: has to elevate everybody else. There's nobody coming to the
- 1:10:11Speaker 11: sidelines to tell him, keep your head up.
- 1:10:13Speaker 19: It's okay.
- 1:10:14Speaker 11: He is still in his rookie contract. I don't know
- 1:10:16Speaker 11: what we're expecting. Look at all these other guys.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: Dart, out.
- 1:10:19Speaker 11: Jaden Daniels, out. Caleb Williams, out. I mean, you be
- 1:10:25Speaker 11: blessed with Drake May. And give him a break. And
- 1:10:27Speaker 11: I really do believe he has no confidence in those
- 1:10:30Speaker 11: receivers that y'all got.
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: Well, that's on him. If that's true, that's on him,
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: because those are the receivers that he has to throw to,
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: and that's the quarterback's job. Do you think that Tom
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: Brady had as much confidence in Reshae Caldwell as he
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: did with Troy Brown? But he made it work. That's
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: his job. That's why you're the centerpiece of the franchise.
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: And he's not hurt, so we're giving him a plus
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: in his column because he's not hurt?
- 1:10:53Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: What are we doing?
- 1:10:56Speaker 11: You're comparing him to Tom Brady already?
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: I'm comparing him to quarterbacks. Like Josh Allen makes it
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: work with Khalil Shakir.
- 1:11:03Speaker 11: What did Matt Stafford do against Purdy?
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: What did he do without Pooka Nakua last night? He
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: threw four touchdowns.
- 1:11:10Speaker 5: Yeah, when James Pooka came in and crapped on himself.
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: I mean, come on, guys.
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: Yeah, but that had nothing to do with Stafford.
- 1:11:15Speaker 11: What did Bo Nix do?
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: No, I'm talking about Stafford.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: No, that's what I'm talking about.
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: What did Bo Nix do? He rallied from 10 points
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: down in the second half and beat a good Jacksonville team.
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: That's what he did.
- 1:11:24Speaker 11: Both around the league, these quarterbacks, you've got to give
- 1:11:27Speaker 11: them grace. It is a hard position, and all these
- 1:11:29Speaker 11: new receivers coming in.
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: It's supposed to be hard.
- 1:11:32Speaker 11: I got that.
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: That's what Josh McDaniels told him. That's the fun of it.
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: It's supposed to be hard. Yeah.
- 1:11:38Speaker 22: Yes, I got that.
- 1:11:39Speaker 18: But you know what?
- 1:11:39Speaker 11: Receivers make mistakes too, and so does the line, and
- 1:11:41Speaker 11: so do the coaches. I don't think Josh McDaniels is
- 1:11:44Speaker 11: moving him around.
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: So let's just get rid of all of them.
- 1:11:46Speaker 13: Everything is forced.
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: We'll just wipe them all out.
- 1:11:48Speaker 11: I want him to play free.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: That's all I want.
- 1:11:51Speaker 11: He needs to be free. Free Drake Mays.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: Free and easy. Free and easy. Thanks, Sabah.
- 1:11:57Speaker 4: And you're telling me that everybody thinks that they should
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: get rid of him.
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: I think that the balance there, though, like I agree
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: that I don't think he's playing as free and.
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: Loose as he was last year.
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: When he tried to do that in the playoffs, he
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: started to turn the ball over like crazy. So, like,
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: that's the issue. And I think that they're trying to
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: find that line of, like, when he can be free
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: and when he can play, you know, out of structure
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: and when he can play with pocket movement and eyes
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: down the field and all that good stuff. And when
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: it's just time to take, you know, take your loss
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: and move on to the next play.
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: You know what?
- 1:12:32Speaker 5: It's a hard line to walk.
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: That fine line, you know what that is?
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: That's hard.
- 1:12:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: It's hard to find that fine line. We've been talking
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: to Josh McDaniels about that for two full years now.
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: And as much as the good vastly outweighs the bad,
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: Josh Allen walks that line every single week, and I
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: don't know if he's ever fully figured it out either.
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: Nope.
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: Like he turned the ball over five times in that
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: playoff game last year.
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: It's going to happen. When you have gifted guys, sometimes
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: those gifts get you in trouble. And I think sometimes
- 1:13:03Speaker 4: Drake May's gifts get him in trouble. And that's why,
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: sort of to fill us up back to the confidence thing,
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: that's why I sort of push back, because I think
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: sometimes he's guilty of too much confidence. But, yeah, I mean,
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: he misses A.J. Brown. There's no doubt about it.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: If A.J.
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: Brown was playing, I think that would be a security
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: guy that he doesn't have him. That can't be like, okay,
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: so we don't have a passing game. It can't be
- 1:13:26Speaker 4: that simple.
- 1:13:27Speaker 8: How many times has Joe Burrow had to make do
- 1:13:30Speaker 8: without Jamar Chase? This is the NFL, and to me,
- 1:13:34Speaker 8: he's got to learn to play like this because he's
- 1:13:35Speaker 8: not always going to have his guy. You can't fault
- 1:13:38Speaker 8: the team now and say they didn't go out and
- 1:13:39Speaker 8: do anything. It's just unfortunate luck.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: A.J. Brown got hurt in week one.
- 1:13:43Speaker 8: But I think that he's going to have to be
- 1:13:46Speaker 8: able to win games without a number one sometimes.
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: It's just even if he has it. They have enough
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: to win these games.
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: And Sunday was a perfect example of it. You didn't
- 1:13:56Speaker 4: need the A game fastball from the offense. So the
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: defense dominated. And they took care of a pedestrian, as
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: Mike Rabel said. Let's not get too lost in it.
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: That's what you're supposed to do to a pedestrian at
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: best offense is make them look awful, and they did
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: for 60 full minutes. Pittsburgh never looked good on offense
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: in that game. At least Seattle, I would say... had
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: periods in the second half. Once they sort of got
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: over the shock of losing their quarterback, I think they
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: settled down, and Drew Locke played a representative game in
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: the second half. There was no period where Pittsburgh looked
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: like they were.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: Any kind of an NFL offense.
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: And that was a testament to the Patriots' defense.
- 1:14:35Speaker 8: I love how the whole defensive tackle group played, from
- 1:14:37Speaker 8: Milt Williams and Christian Barmore right down to Josh Farmer.
- 1:14:40Speaker 8: I thought those guys said, Barmore said he challenged him
- 1:14:43Speaker 8: in the week, and I thought all those guys played
- 1:14:46Speaker 8: like they had been challenged in the week. You know,
- 1:14:48Speaker 8: I'd say one thing interesting to me, though, finally getting
- 1:14:50Speaker 8: a look at Daquan Jones, he isn't as big as
- 1:14:52Speaker 8: I thought he was. He doesn't look, he doesn't have
- 1:14:54Speaker 8: the frame that I kind of, in my mind, was picturing. Like,
- 1:14:57Speaker 8: he seems a little bit more long and narrow rather
- 1:15:00Speaker 8: than squatty.
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: Yeah, no, he's not like a Tonga-nosed tackle. He's more
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: of like a Durden body type. But I just love
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: how fast and physical that defense plays. Christian Ellis just absolutely.
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: Ruined Aaron Rodgers. Like I, I'm, I can't believe he
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: got up. I actually think Robert Spillane sandwiching him is like,
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: like if he had, if I had taken him to
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: the ground, I think that would have been blouses for
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers. And I don't mean that as like, I
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: want him to get hurt, but like that, that's, he's
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: one of the best hitters in the entire league.
- 1:15:34Speaker 6: If you want a good cinematic look at that play
- 1:15:36Speaker 6: where Rodgers gets killed, go to patrice.com. Uh, they created
- 1:15:41Speaker 6: a nice video, uh, set to classical music in slow,
- 1:15:45Speaker 6: slow motion of Rogers getting hit.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: It's, uh, it's good stuff. Good stuff.
- 1:15:50Speaker 5: Good use of all.
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: Uh, Freud. Yeah.
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: Uh, all right.
- 1:15:56Speaker 6: Uh, it's time for the show to get derailed. So
- 1:15:59Speaker 6: it's Christian in LA. What's up, Christian?
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: Hey, you guys. Hey, you guys.
- 1:16:04Speaker 19: Hey, you guys. Hey, listen, um, I need to clarify
- 1:16:07Speaker 19: what I said the other day because I'm.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: Yeah, you're the one that said they should bench him.
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: Yeah, you're the one.
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: Stop treating him with kid gloves. I remember.
- 1:16:14Speaker 19: I did not say to bench him.
- 1:16:17Speaker 20: I said, if anybody else, if his name was anything but...
- 1:16:21Speaker 20: Drake may, you would look at any staying team would
- 1:16:24Speaker 20: look at the production and say, wow, seven, seven games.
- 1:16:28Speaker 19: Where this guy leading his team cannot score in the
- 1:16:32Speaker 19: second half. That's terrible production. Five games where this guy has.
- 1:16:37Speaker 20: Thrown 11 interceptions to only seven touchdowns. I said, if
- 1:16:42Speaker 20: he was anybody else, any same team would look at
- 1:16:46Speaker 20: his production and say, Maybe we need to look at
- 1:16:48Speaker 20: this guy. Maybe we need to sit this.
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: Guy down and talk to him. Can I ask, what
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: do you mean by that? What do you mean if
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: it was anybody else, not me? So, in other words,
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: you're saying if it was someone who didn't have an
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: MVP caliber regular season?
- 1:17:02Speaker 20: Yeah.
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: Doesn't that count? That's why you don't think about benching him.
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: Because he's established a level of ability. If it was
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: just a guy who played six games and played the
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: way that he played the last six games. Yeah, if
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: it's James Winston, it's different. Then you'd sit him.
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: But that makes all the difference in the world. I
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: don't think any team would bench a guy who would
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: play at the level that he played at last year
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: because they had two bad games to start the next year.
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: I don't think any team would bench him.
- 1:17:29Speaker 19: Well, it's not two bad games.
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: It's seven bad games. It's six, but that's okay.
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: But, you know, some of us put it in context,
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: and it's not to make excuses.
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: There was four playoff games and two games this year, Christian.
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: It was six.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: Denver was a blizzard.
- 1:17:43Speaker 20: A game for a guy that is supposedly your franchise,
- 1:17:47Speaker 20: a guy that's supposedly an MVP.
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: So, Christian, what's the alternative, Christian? So don't back off.
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: You're saying, Benjamin, don't back away from it.
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: But what's the alternative? Back in the draft, Tommy DeVito,
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: what do you want? What's the alternative?
- 1:18:02Speaker 20: I think it's one of those situations where you have
- 1:18:04Speaker 20: to tell him there is a chance that you can
- 1:18:07Speaker 20: sit down if you don't straight up and play right.
- 1:18:09Speaker 20: You can't just turn the keys over to this guy
- 1:18:11Speaker 20: and say, you know what, because we gave you so
- 1:18:13Speaker 20: much money, because you did so well last year for
- 1:18:15Speaker 20: the last six, seven games.
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: Christian, what's the alternative?
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: I don't know what they're telling him.
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: What's the alternative?
- 1:18:22Speaker 19: I don't know what the alternative is. I'm not a
- 1:18:23Speaker 19: sports psychologist. I'm not a coach. But we have to
- 1:18:26Speaker 19: stop treating him like, okay, well, let's just get ready
- 1:18:28Speaker 19: for Drake. Drake is going to be okay. Let's talk
- 1:18:31Speaker 19: about it the way it really is. He's not playing
- 1:18:33Speaker 19: like a quarterback.
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: That would beat anybody else's team. No one's arguing with
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: you at that point.
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: I think we've tried to analyze it. Thanks, Chris.
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: I think we've talked about it.
- 1:18:44Speaker 6: He really wants people with pitchforks and torches to storm
- 1:18:48Speaker 6: the couch.
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: Know what the alternative is.
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: He is calling for him to be benched. I mean,
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: he started out, he goes, I think I want to clarify,
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: and then he just rattled off why he thinks he
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: should sit. And that's your opinion. But own it.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: Stand by it. And do you think it's productive? Do
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: you think it would help for coaches to go up
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: to him and say, hey, you're going to get benched.
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: One more bad throw and you're on the bench, buster.
- 1:19:11Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: Double secret probation. I mean, do you really think that
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: that's the way to make things better?
- 1:19:16Speaker 13: No.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't think so. I don't think so.
- 1:19:21Speaker 4: And to suggest that we're not talking about these issues.
- 1:19:23Speaker 5: We talked about it for the first hour of the show.
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: The four of us are talking about him not seeing
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: the field maybe as well, not stepping into throws, not
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: throwing with conviction, maybe having a crisis of confidence. The
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: efficiency and the effectiveness beyond the one or two big
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: plays downfield... Other than that, where are the points? They're
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: not scoring points. They're not moving the ball. They've been
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: around 300 total yards in both games. I don't know
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: how much else we can dissect and analyze negatively of
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: what we're seeing. But now I think the difference between
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: the four of us and Christian and I'm sure some
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: others is I think we have some confidence based on
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: what we've seen that this will turn. We've seen the
- 1:20:10Speaker 4: guy play at a higher level. Then he's played at
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: the last six games, by the way. He keeps adding one.
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: It was four playoff games and two games in the
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: regular season.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:19Speaker 7: Right? Yeah.
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: No, I understand why people attach the playoffs because it
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: looks similar. He looks similar when you watch him to
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: the guy that was playing in the playoffs. But it's
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: two separate seasons, right? At the end of the day...
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: To me, it's two games. There's different players. There's different opponents.
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: He's last two, right? Right. It makes me sick to
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: think that we're now.
- 1:20:44Speaker 8: And I know it wasn't great, but the guy won
- 1:20:46Speaker 8: an AFC championship in Denver. I don't care what it
- 1:20:48Speaker 8: looked like. That's an impossible game to play. I've seen
- 1:20:51Speaker 8: Tom Brady lose it. Regardless of how it looked, the
- 1:20:55Speaker 8: team won three games in the playoffs.
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: With this guy. I'm going to cut ties on that one.
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: I think a lot of guys could have thrown for
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: 86 yards in one year.
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: That's fine.
- 1:21:02Speaker 8: Like, you know, but like, I have to look at
- 1:21:05Speaker 8: the whole team and say, how did it go last year?
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: Did it go pretty good? Yeah. Oh, two games later.
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: Now we're like, and that's why I started off by
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: asking him, what do you mean by, if he wasn't
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: named Drake may. So like, it sort of implies that
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: he hasn't done anything, but his name, you know, it's
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: like drew Henson at Michigan because of, he was drew Henson.
- 1:21:25Speaker 4: He got to play and, alongside Brady, even though Brady
- 1:21:29Speaker 4: was clearly outplaying him. Do you know what I mean?
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: Like, based on his reputation, he was afforded opportunities to
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: play at Michigan under Lloyd Carr.
- 1:21:39Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: That's not why Drake May is playing the games right now.
- 1:21:43Speaker 4: Drake May is playing the games right now because he
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: played the 2025 season, as Mike just said, at an
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: MVP level, and then, however it happened, was able to
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: advance to the Super Bowl. With him playing quarterback.
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: I mean.
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: That's why no one's talking about benching him.
- 1:21:59Speaker 6: Two years ago, Jaden Daniels had a pretty good season, right?
- 1:22:02Speaker 6: Took his team to the NFC Championship.
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:22:04Speaker 6: If in year two, he had the same production that
- 1:22:07Speaker 6: Drake May has right now, would you think the commanders
- 1:22:09Speaker 6: would be bench.
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: You know, thinking of benching him? Of course not.
- 1:22:13Speaker 5: I just think that.
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: They're not thinking of benching him anyway. Right.
- 1:22:16Speaker 5: The only thing that I take from, like... I'm just
- 1:22:18Speaker 5: saying another name.
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: You know, other than.
- 1:22:20Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: But again, you establish a level of play.
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: Like.
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: That's why he's playing. It's not because of his reputation
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: or his name. There's no team that would be benching
- 1:22:32Speaker 4: Drake May.
- 1:22:32Speaker 7: No.
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: If Drake May played for any other team in football
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: last year and played the same level of football and
- 1:22:38Speaker 4: had these two games to start the season, there's no
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: team that would even consider it. Not even the Jets.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: Anthony says, I thought you'd like that.
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: Shot of the Jets, right?
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: They just cut him. They would just cut him.
- 1:22:52Speaker 6: Anthony wants to know, is the dash pass the cover
- 1:22:54Speaker 6: six beater? I think that play came off of a
- 1:22:57Speaker 6: cover six. As up and down as Drake has been,
- 1:22:59Speaker 6: I believe we saw flashes of last year's Drake against
- 1:23:02Speaker 6: the Steelers.
- 1:23:04Speaker 3: So some dispute about the coverage exactly.
- 1:23:09Speaker 4: This is what happens. You mean guys that don't know
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: what the coverage was?
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: The guy in the middle, was he over to this side?
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: Was he a little bit closer? Was it cover three?
- 1:23:16Speaker 3: So it looked to me like they were playing straight
- 1:23:19Speaker 3: quarters coverage. to the passing strength, but I could hear
- 1:23:24Speaker 3: cover three as well, but that middle safety, if he's
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: playing cover three, like he's, he's really low to like,
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: usually the post safety is out. Like he's getting, you know, deep, uh,
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: in the middle of the field. Uh, but maybe it was,
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: it was, I don't know. I, I read it as
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: cover six. Some other people saw it as cover three semantics.
- 1:23:45Speaker 3: They flooded the zone sale concept, pop Douglas on the corner, uh,
- 1:23:50Speaker 3: Dobbs is actually.
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: On the clear. Like, that's not even really where the
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: ball is supposed to go.
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: And 22, Asante Samuel Jr.
- 1:23:56Speaker 5: Kind of stinks, by the way.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: Sorry, Asante.
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: There's conflict there, right? Like, he can't cover both guys.
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: So two guys are running into his zone. Now, rule
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: of thumb is usually GTFB. Like, you're supposed to stay
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: over the top of the deepest route and just give
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: up the little chunk instead of the big chunk.
- 1:24:15Speaker 5: But Asante Samuel Jr. 's in hell. He doesn't know
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: what to do. Do I cover Dobbs? Do I cover Pop?
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: And it was a really nice, just perfectly well-designed play
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: by Josh McDaniels.
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: What?
- 1:24:27Speaker 5: There you go.
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: Oh, interesting.
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: Maybe you didn't hear my Legal Seafood's Fresh Take of
- 1:24:31Speaker 4: the Day, Mike. You've been busy. You've been away a
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: long time.
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: You didn't hear. It's the same thing.
- 1:24:37Speaker 8: It's like Josh McDaniels, three games ago, he was the
- 1:24:40Speaker 8: assistant coach of the year last year.
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: Now, three games later, he can't coach offense.
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: He needs to go. quickly on the cover six thing.
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: I'm already annoyed.
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: I'm already annoyed because this Jaguars defense is a very
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: heavy cover six defense. So it's going to be, so
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: it's going to be another week of cover six and woo.
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: So, uh, can't wait for that without the talent there.
- 1:25:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:25:02Speaker 5: Not, not Seattle's level.
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: Uh, but the only team that run has run more
- 1:25:07Speaker 3: cover six from the start of 2025 and Jacksonville is
- 1:25:11Speaker 3: the cover six. Godfather himself, Vic Fangio in Philadelphia. So it's, Eagles,
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: Jaguars in terms of cover six rate, and they're going
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: to see a lot of it again on Sunday.
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: Another thing you might hear a lot of during the
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: course of the week is protecting the ball because that's
- 1:25:27Speaker 4: how Jacksonville's defense lives. They try to take the ball away.
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: They're very aggressive. Yeah, we'll get to it later in
- 1:25:33Speaker 3: the week. I don't want to, you know.
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: Yeah, that's more of a Wednesday.
- 1:25:37Speaker 5: I don't want to empty the chamber.
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: Hello, everyone.
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: Hello, Maureen. Claire writes in. I just want to help
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: her out here.
- 1:25:44Speaker 6: She says, could you please give a huge shout out
- 1:25:47Speaker 6: and thank you to Chutters from Manchester. Today we recorded
- 1:25:50Speaker 6: our 100th episode of Pat's Procrastination YouTube show for Pat's Propaganda.
- 1:25:56Speaker 6: And I want to thank you for being my lovely
- 1:25:58Speaker 6: co-host for three years and 100 episodes.
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: So there you go.
- 1:26:03Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: Congratulations.
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: Good job, Shudders.
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: You remember those blogger days?
- 1:26:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: We all love going on the show with Claire. Did
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: Shudders ask me questions, like, through Claire? I don't know
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: if I've ever talked to Shudders personally.
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: But she always has, like, one or two questions that
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: are from Shudders wanting me to ask you this.
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: Like, okay, cool.
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: Was that cover six or seven?
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: Or three.
- 1:26:31Speaker 5: Well, seven's totally different, Paul.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: Can I throw a couple things out there?
- 1:26:38Speaker 8: Kind of felt like I saw something from Elijah Veritaka
- 1:26:41Speaker 8: for the first.
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: Time in this game. Yeah.
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: Yeah, he was much better in this game. Maybe, like,
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: he was just a little rusty in that first game
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: in Seattle.
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: Get some movement on Cam Hayward.
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: Double teams with him and Campbell on the 24-yard run
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: really moved the line.
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: I'm waiting to see something from him.
- 1:26:56Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: Saw a little bit of something.
- 1:26:57Speaker 5: Yeah, the guy next to him will, you know.
- 1:27:00Speaker 6: David Bethlehem about May. He said, this is where coaching matters. Braves, McDaniels,
- 1:27:04Speaker 6: Grant are a rock-solid group. Need to focus.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: Honeymoon is over.
- 1:27:10Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: So the one thing I would just say from the,
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: you know, Christian saying it's been seven games, it's been
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: six games really, but you know, the, the whole teams
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: have had a whole off season to kind of study
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: this offense and study Drake may Josh McDaniels brought it
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: up last week. That's been sticking with me a little bit.
- 1:27:28Speaker 3: I think that that's a big part of it. You know,
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: there are things that he likes to do.
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: There are things that he's comfortable running.
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: There's passing concepts that I can even, you know, rattle
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: off that are his favorites. And when teams start to
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: see that over and over again on film, they spend
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: a lot of time there. These coaches on the other
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: side of the ball get paid too. So this is where,
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: this is the NFL. So that's why I'm not in
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: a panic over two games is because this is like,
- 1:27:56Speaker 3: they're getting paid. They came in swinging. Now they got counterpunched,
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: and now they need to counterpunch back. It's the adjustment
- 1:28:04Speaker 3: to the adjustment. Before you came in and when Fred
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: threw that out there, what has changed? What's different between
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: the 25 season and what we've seen so far? And
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: we had those things that you had rattled off about,
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: you know, the receivers have changed and blah, blah, blah.
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: That was one of the ones I added was I
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: think some teams are, playing them differently. And I even
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: think that you've seen a slight difference, not huge, but
- 1:28:29Speaker 3: a slight difference in them worried about him as a runner.
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:28:34Speaker 4: And the way that they've defended him and not allowed
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: him to maybe run as productively as he did last year. Yeah.
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: I mean, the red zone sack, he's got three sets
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: of eyes on him. They have two little zone droppers over,
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: and then they also have the post safety in the
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: middle of the field with eyes in the backfield. They're just,
- 1:28:51Speaker 3: they're playing him smartly because these other teams get paid too.
- 1:28:56Speaker 5: And they have smart coaches.
- 1:28:57Speaker 8: My question is, if you're an offensive coordinator, how much
- 1:29:00Speaker 8: of that do you anticipate?
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: Like some of it I think is obvious, right?
- 1:29:03Speaker 8: With playing more high, taking away the deep ball, but,
- 1:29:06Speaker 8: and how much do you have to wait and just
- 1:29:08Speaker 8: kind of see what teams are doing to you? I mean,
- 1:29:10Speaker 8: can Josh anticipate what he thought those changes were and
- 1:29:12Speaker 8: kind of preemptively say, this is how we have to
- 1:29:15Speaker 8: evolve because this is how teams are probably going to
- 1:29:16Speaker 8: play us. Or do you go in and say, Hey,
- 1:29:19Speaker 8: We're going to do what we do, and as teams
- 1:29:20Speaker 8: start to play us different ways, now we kind of
- 1:29:22Speaker 8: have to come up with the adjustment.
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: You want to be the hammer or the nail.
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: And you also get into teams that have worse personnel
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: but also don't have the ability to sit in a
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: too-high safety shell because of the personnel and play 90% zone.
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: I thought Pittsburgh would play more zone than they did.
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: They came out in this game and played man, and
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: the Patriots went right down the field. And they played
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: Manna for really the first two drives of the game,
- 1:29:45Speaker 3: and I was pretty shocked that they played.
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: Manna out of the shootout. That was Troy Brown's thing
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: coming out of it.
- 1:29:49Speaker 8: He said, I wouldn't be surprised to see, try to
- 1:29:51Speaker 8: force those receivers to separate and see what the chemistry
- 1:29:55Speaker 8: was like, but I guess you got your answer.
- 1:29:56Speaker 5: Well, yeah, it was the wrong direction.
- 1:29:57Speaker 6: Anthony, about Christian in L.A., I'll be honest, he sometimes
- 1:30:01Speaker 6: has good points, but what a bad take today.
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, great idea. Let's help May get his confidence
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: back by dangling the starting role, by telling him he
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: has a short leash.
- 1:30:11Speaker 6: He needs to be built up. He's going to turn
- 1:30:14Speaker 6: it around. I'm not even close to be worried about that.
- 1:30:16Speaker 6: The worry should be injuries.
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: That's all.
- 1:30:21Speaker 6: And then another one on Christian in L.A. I want
- 1:30:25Speaker 6: to be very clear that I am not saying Drake
- 1:30:28Speaker 6: May is this player necessarily. because Drake is actually talented.
- 1:30:32Speaker 6: But when McCorkle had his prolonged slump that started in
- 1:30:36Speaker 6: one year and continued into the next, people were ready
- 1:30:39Speaker 6: to move off of him. Very few held on to
- 1:30:41Speaker 6: the first part of the year where he played decent
- 1:30:44Speaker 6: and saying that was the real Mac.
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: They were falling for zappy fever.
- 1:30:48Speaker 6: Perhaps that is what Christian is referencing, but I also
- 1:30:52Speaker 6: understand I'm likely giving his rant a charitable read.
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: Well, I don't think Mac Jones wasn't an MVP runner up.
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: I don't think you're given a charitable read to Christian.
- 1:31:02Speaker 4: You're given a charitable memory of what Mac Jones did
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: in his rookie year. He was pedestrian.
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: Right. We told you that. at the second half of
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: the season.
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: I told you that the whole year. They were winning
- 1:31:13Speaker 4: despite him, not because of him.
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: Well, that's going a little far, but there's no doubt
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: that what Drake May did last year is pale.
- 1:31:21Speaker 11: Vastly.
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: Vastly. Even eye test wise, physical talent is not close.
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: And I, you know, Mac's one of my guys, but
- 1:31:29Speaker 3: like that, that's not, not close. Not in terms of
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: the product on the field and the eye test, like
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: just overall.
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: And the fact that Zappi went in and it was
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: kind of the same, to me, illustrated the fact that
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: you weren't getting anything special from the quarterback because the
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: fourth-round Jag was doing the same thing.
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: I'm just hearing the Zappi chants.
- 1:31:53Speaker 3: The injury part, though, I've been hearing a lot of
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: the second-guessing about Diggs now.
- 1:32:00Speaker 5: And it's like, first of all, we'd be saying that
- 1:32:02Speaker 5: if A.J. Brown doesn't get hurt. If he had A.J.
- 1:32:05Speaker 4: Brown.
- 1:32:06Speaker 3: And, you know, that was that was who was here
- 1:32:09Speaker 3: to be the high volume guy instead of Diggs. And
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: I don't want to go too far down this road
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: with Diggs. But if you're going to talk about the
- 1:32:15Speaker 3: Diggs thing, you got to talk about the Diggs thing.
- 1:32:17Speaker 5: Like, it's not just the stuff that he brought on
- 1:32:20Speaker 5: the field.
- 1:32:21Speaker 4: He's a lot. He's a lot.
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: And like there was a lot of stuff going on
- 1:32:24Speaker 3: around Stefan Diggs that. I think contributed to the fact
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: that he's not here anymore. And I feel like the
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: conversation is just about football, which trust me, I only
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: want to talk about football. But if you're asking about
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: the decision from a personnel standpoint of why they moved
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: off of Stefan Diggs, it wasn't because he was bad
- 1:32:42Speaker 3: at football.
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: It was just an expiration date.
- 1:32:44Speaker 4: If it was just about football. then you guys all
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: still would have taken him. If it was just about football,
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: we all agree. I mean, a tremendous career. And he's
- 1:32:53Speaker 4: still good. He's contributing for Washington.
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: He's got like four touchdowns already or three or something
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: like that.
- 1:32:59Speaker 5: He had one in week one.
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: I think he had two in this one. I think
- 1:33:02Speaker 4: he has three altogether. I think he had two in
- 1:33:04Speaker 4: this game.
- 1:33:06Speaker 8: The long term with Drake May is never going to
- 1:33:08Speaker 8: be with Keyshawn Booty and Stephon Diggs.
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: And so you made the move for A.J. Brown this year.
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: We'll see how it goes next year.
- 1:33:13Speaker 8: This season, they have opportunity next year with Matt Collins
- 1:33:16Speaker 8: is up and Pop Douglas is up, and they'll have
- 1:33:19Speaker 8: an opportunity next year to rejigger the receiving room if
- 1:33:21Speaker 8: they want. But ultimately, it just comes back to Drake,
- 1:33:23Speaker 8: and he's got to be able to be the conductor
- 1:33:25Speaker 8: of the system. And when a new player, a receiver,
- 1:33:27Speaker 8: comes in next year, he's got to be able to
- 1:33:29Speaker 8: bring that guy in and earn trust with that guy.
- 1:33:31Speaker 8: And that's how it works if you maintain a competitive
- 1:33:34Speaker 8: team year in and year out, regardless of injuries.
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: Eldred's in North Carolina. What's up, Eldred?
- 1:33:40Speaker 7: Hey, fellas.
- 1:33:40Speaker 18: How y'all doing?
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: Okay. Eldred.
- 1:33:43Speaker 11: I'm doing okay.
- 1:33:45Speaker 18: Paul, I agree with you to some extent. Evan, you
- 1:33:48Speaker 18: defend your boy to the heel like I defend mine.
- 1:33:51Speaker 6: Go ahead, dog.
- 1:33:52Speaker 18: I die on that heel, too. But he has lost
- 1:33:56Speaker 18: his confidence for some reason. Excuse me, I don't know.
- 1:33:59Speaker 4: Why or how.
- 1:34:01Speaker 18: Besides all that, he's hitting defense. Like I said, sometimes
- 1:34:05Speaker 18: it reminds me of North Carolina Drake May. But you
- 1:34:08Speaker 18: made a point, though. You've got to trust your receivers
- 1:34:11Speaker 18: no matter what, and the receivers have got to trust you.
- 1:34:13Speaker 18: And according to Cato's, Tyler, whatever his name is, and
- 1:34:19Speaker 18: Phil Perry, yeah, all of those misread and policy, you
- 1:34:24Speaker 18: don't want to bring him up. He had a bunch
- 1:34:26Speaker 18: of guys open. He just spread through. He just run through.
- 1:34:30Speaker 18: So if they can just settle him down, you can
- 1:34:32Speaker 18: bet the MVP level. At least I'm hoping. I lost
- 1:34:35Speaker 18: 150 the first week. I didn't bet this week. But
- 1:34:38Speaker 18: I'm going to try to bet on Jacksonville.
- 1:34:39Speaker 13: I guess Jacksonville.
- 1:34:40Speaker 18: Hope I don't lose that one. But other than that,
- 1:34:43Speaker 18: that's about it.
- 1:34:44Speaker 15: It's all on Drake.
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: Hey, Eldred.
- 1:34:45Speaker 18: Drake got to step up. That's all there is to it.
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:34:47Speaker 8: Eldred, I got a glimpse of your guy DK Metcalf
- 1:34:50Speaker 8: on the field before the game.
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: I get it now. I get it.
- 1:34:53Speaker 5: You didn't get it before?
- 1:34:54Speaker 14: Yep. Yep.
- 1:34:56Speaker 10: Yep.
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: Big dude. Looks like Tarzan.
- 1:34:59Speaker 14: Nah.
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: You look like Tarzan, but.
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: He actually looks like he retired, to be honest with you.
- 1:35:05Speaker 4: I don't think he was interested in playing that game
- 1:35:07Speaker 4: at all.
- 1:35:07Speaker 5: Yeah, he.
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: Thanks, Eldridge. Not today, Coach.
- 1:35:10Speaker 4: He just didn't want to catch the ball. Even the
- 1:35:13Speaker 4: few times that he was open, he wouldn't catch it.
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: We've got a Christian Gonzalez film breakdown that we're working
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: on that you can watch him covering DK Metcalf. And
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: I think the most encouraging part about Gonzalez was... how
- 1:35:26Speaker 3: much off coverage he played against DK because he didn't
- 1:35:29Speaker 3: want to press him because he's so big. So he
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: played off of him and was just mirroring him at
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: the top of routes. And like rookie year, Gonzalez didn't
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: have that in his bag. Like he wasn't, you know,
- 1:35:37Speaker 3: the technique wasn't there. He was a strictly a press
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: man corner. Like now he's like bailing and catching him
- 1:35:43Speaker 3: down the field and staying over the top of double moves.
- 1:35:46Speaker 3: And he's breaking on underneath throws. I mean, he, that
- 1:35:49Speaker 3: was really, A pretty dominant performance.
- 1:35:52Speaker 4: I know a lot of things that happened in that
- 1:35:54Speaker 4: game that I kind of envisioned happening, but one of
- 1:35:56Speaker 4: the things that I was way off on is I
- 1:35:58Speaker 4: saw how bad Metcalf was in the first game against Atlanta,
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: and I was like, he's too good to have... He
- 1:36:03Speaker 4: may have been worse in this game. That's what it is.
- 1:36:06Speaker 4: I just thought he looked disinterested in playing, quite frankly.
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: I didn't think he had any interest in playing in
- 1:36:11Speaker 4: the game. He certainly didn't want to fight Christian Gonzalez
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: in this game.
- 1:36:15Speaker 6: Well, I think it would be a little bit tougher
- 1:36:18Speaker 6: test for the defense... this game coming up.
- 1:36:21Speaker 4: Just going forward in general, they're going to start to
- 1:36:23Speaker 4: see some, some, remember.
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: Pittman was out to Metcalf was a ghost of himself,
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: you know?
- 1:36:28Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:36:28Speaker 4: And I mean, Aaron Rogers is not good.
- 1:36:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:36:31Speaker 4: And I know like, no, it's true. You know, like
- 1:36:34Speaker 4: that would be an example of a guy, you know,
- 1:36:36Speaker 4: if that, you know, to Christian's point, if his name
- 1:36:40Speaker 4: wasn't Aaron Rogers, he probably would be sad because he
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: can't play anymore. He can't be at a level anymore. No.
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: Patty's an Agawam. What's up, Patty?
- 1:36:50Speaker 12: What's up, guys?
- 1:36:51Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:36:52Speaker 15: So Deuce touched on a little bit of what I
- 1:36:53Speaker 15: want to talk about, and that's Josh McDaniels. I feel
- 1:36:56Speaker 15: like a lot of fans are getting the torches and
- 1:36:59Speaker 15: pitchforks out for him already. And I think people need
- 1:37:04Speaker 15: to just cool it off a little bit and realize
- 1:37:07Speaker 15: that the system that McDaniels has run, which is an
- 1:37:10Speaker 15: offshoot of Earnhardt Perkins', it's a proven system. It's a
- 1:37:13Speaker 15: proven system here. I think once Drake May gets into
- 1:37:18Speaker 15: year 5, 6, 7, somewhere around there, and he has
- 1:37:21Speaker 15: a full mastery of the system, I feel like he
- 1:37:24Speaker 15: could play in any system. And I don't feel like
- 1:37:30Speaker 15: that's the same thing with the West Coast, the Shanahan,
- 1:37:33Speaker 15: or the Bill Walsh offense. I think if you take
- 1:37:35Speaker 15: a quarterback out of that system and in year five
- 1:37:38Speaker 15: or six and stick them into this system, I think
- 1:37:41Speaker 15: the learning curve is going to be a hell of
- 1:37:42Speaker 15: a lot longer. And people need to realize, too, when
- 1:37:45Speaker 15: it comes to Drake, what does he have, 35 total starts?
- 1:37:49Speaker 15: It's a little bit more than two full seasons of
- 1:37:53Speaker 15: tape on the guy. Stop treating him like he's a
- 1:37:55Speaker 15: 10-year vet. Like, he's going to make mistakes. He's going
- 1:37:58Speaker 15: to mess up. But you have to take the good
- 1:38:01Speaker 15: with the bad. I think at some point he's going
- 1:38:03Speaker 15: to heat up. And honestly, I think I think you
- 1:38:07Speaker 15: need someone like Drew in his ear just to tell him,
- 1:38:11Speaker 15: just go out there and swing it, kid. That's what
- 1:38:13Speaker 15: I got, guys.
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:38:15Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: Thanks, Patty.
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: The one thing about the play calling, like now we're
- 1:38:20Speaker 3: getting a larger sample size and starting to see more
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: of what they're doing that I find interesting is just
- 1:38:26Speaker 3: I think they're they're doing a lot of different things to,
- 1:38:30Speaker 3: I think to try to protect the offensive line. They're
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: moving the pocket more, a lot of cut blocking, a
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: lot of three men in the route with extra protection
- 1:38:38Speaker 3: when they're trying to push the ball down the field.
- 1:38:41Speaker 3: And it's two good fronts. So maybe it's just a
- 1:38:44Speaker 3: Seattle-Pittsburgh thing. But I don't think that they're asking a ton.
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: I think Will Campbell's playing well for what he's being
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: asked to do. But I don't think he's being asked
- 1:38:54Speaker 3: to do a ton.
- 1:38:55Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: And, you know, there's pros and cons to both things.
- 1:38:59Speaker 3: But when you're only putting two or three guys in
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: the route, you're not stressing the defense the way that
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: you would if you put five in. So, like, I
- 1:39:07Speaker 3: don't know what the impetus of that is. Like, I
- 1:39:09Speaker 3: don't know if that's opponent driven, that they just don't
- 1:39:13Speaker 3: want TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith and Cam Hayward to
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: take over the game against five man pass pro or
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: if it's they don't, you know, They're not as confident
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: in those guys up front, but I wonder at some
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: point if McDaniels gets a little bit more comfortable with
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: the performance that he's seeing out of the offensive line
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: and putting a little bit more on their plate. We're
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: talking a lot about the dash pass. I love the
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: dash pass, but the offensive line doesn't have to do
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: anything on that play. We're rolling the quarterback out and
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: you're not doing nothing.
- 1:39:46Speaker 8: To the point, could Josh be having some similar stuff
- 1:39:50Speaker 8: we're talking about with Drake where he's kind of got
- 1:39:52Speaker 8: ghosts in his head a little bit from the last
- 1:39:53Speaker 8: few performances and seeing how game plans got blown up
- 1:39:56Speaker 8: because of pass protection. Maybe he's a little bit overplaying
- 1:40:00Speaker 8: some of the recent games too.
- 1:40:03Speaker 3: I hate to use this word because I know everybody
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: freaks out, but it's very conservative with the way that
- 1:40:08Speaker 3: they're dropping back the pass.
- 1:40:10Speaker 5: They're not.
- 1:40:11Speaker 3: And I, and I wonder why, why that is like
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: only like he can really answer that question. But my
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: theory is that it's, they're not quite there yet on
- 1:40:20Speaker 3: the office.
- 1:40:21Speaker 4: Especially when they're looking to get the ball downfield. You know,
- 1:40:23Speaker 4: this is two games again, small sample size, but week one,
- 1:40:26Speaker 4: how did they try to get the ball downfield once
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: flea flicker, you know, week two, Evan has talked about
- 1:40:32Speaker 4: that past the dash pass. That doesn't really require a
- 1:40:36Speaker 4: lot of, you know, pass protection because Drake is buying
- 1:40:40Speaker 4: routes and Drake is buying. So maybe they just don't
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: have the confidence right now that they'll have the time
- 1:40:45Speaker 4: to have those late developing routes.
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: I mean, and to be fair, like the deuces point, they,
- 1:40:50Speaker 3: they ran a lot of five man pass pro in
- 1:40:52Speaker 3: the super bowl and got demolished. So like when you
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: know that that's in the back of your head and
- 1:40:56Speaker 3: you're playing the exact same team seven months later, like
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: you're not going to just call the game the exact
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: same way.
- 1:41:01Speaker 8: And is it, is it still geared towards Drake too
- 1:41:03Speaker 8: of like, I got to get this kid just comfortable
- 1:41:05Speaker 8: in the pocket. Like, let's just make sure, that he
- 1:41:08Speaker 8: gets his clock back, and then maybe we can start
- 1:41:10Speaker 8: to expand.
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 1:41:12Speaker 6: Evan was talking about the DK-Gonzo matchup just before. Ethan
- 1:41:16Speaker 6: in LA wants to know, can Evan explain why PFF
- 1:41:19Speaker 6: had the battle between DK and Gonzo a wash or
- 1:41:23Speaker 6: a small victory for DK?
- 1:41:25Speaker 5: Yeah, so this was going around.
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: The ball knowers were talking about this?
- 1:41:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:41:31Speaker 3: To be honest with you, I've said this a million
- 1:41:33Speaker 3: times about PFF. The grades are not... where the good
- 1:41:38Speaker 3: stuff is with pff the grades are the bad part
- 1:41:40Speaker 3: about pff uh but that aside it's kind of i
- 1:41:44Speaker 3: think what paul was talking about he did drop two
- 1:41:46Speaker 3: passes and one of them was on third down that
- 1:41:49Speaker 3: if he catches the ball it's going to be a
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: first down now i'm not telling you that that means
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: that he won the matchup no certainly not i was
- 1:41:55Speaker 3: one to match yeah but if he catches those two
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: passes then obviously the box score looks a lot different
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: and from the opposite side like gonzalez was beat On
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: those two points.
- 1:42:04Speaker 4: And there were a couple of times that he wasn't
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: targeted that I think Rodgers got killed. That maybe if
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: he had time, may have been opportunities to throw the
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: ball to him too. I don't, you know, whatever, Gonzalez
- 1:42:17Speaker 4: won the matchup, but like, whatever, is that, does that
- 1:42:19Speaker 4: strictly how it goes?
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: Like, if.
- 1:42:22Speaker 4: Metcalf's grade is higher than Gonzalez's grade. You would consider
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: that he won. No, I, but I think the whole,
- 1:42:28Speaker 4: cause you're graded on the whole game, not just right.
- 1:42:31Speaker 4: The whole premise of PFF is to look beyond the
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: box score, right? So like the box score, it tells
- 1:42:37Speaker 4: you that Gonzalez gave up one catch for nine yards
- 1:42:40Speaker 4: to DK Metcalf. But if DK Metcalf doesn't drop two passes,
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: then let's just say he dropped three. So he has
- 1:42:49Speaker 4: four for 50. I would still say Gonzalez won the matchup.
- 1:42:52Speaker 7: 100%.
- 1:42:52Speaker 3: Do you know what I mean? I'm just telling you
- 1:42:53Speaker 3: why the grades might have been a little bit more even.
- 1:42:56Speaker 3: I'm not trying to defend it. The question was asked.
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: But I think you're also grading, and I don't want
- 1:43:01Speaker 4: to defend PFF because I don't really believe in their
- 1:43:04Speaker 4: grades or the people that are doing the grading. I
- 1:43:07Speaker 4: don't think they know always what they're watching. But aren't
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: you graded on the whole game? So like Evan just said,
- 1:43:16Speaker 4: he had like one catch for nine yards, whatever it was. Well,
- 1:43:20Speaker 4: there were a lot of other plays in the game
- 1:43:21Speaker 4: that maybe Metcalf wasn't on Gonzalez and he got open.
- 1:43:25Speaker 12: No.
- 1:43:26Speaker 4: No, I'm just saying he had a bad grade in
- 1:43:29Speaker 4: the game.
- 1:43:29Speaker 3: Yeah, but yeah, the grades, like I said this a
- 1:43:33Speaker 3: million times, like I find the value of PFF to
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: be in their charting data, like snap counts, where guys
- 1:43:39Speaker 3: are playing in the offense or defense.
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: Stuff that's just a fact.
- 1:43:44Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:43:44Speaker 3: Does this guy line up over the left side of
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: the offensive line or the right side of the offensive line?
- 1:43:49Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:43:49Speaker 5: Does this guy line up in the slot or on
- 1:43:52Speaker 5: the outside?
- 1:43:52Speaker 3: Because like for somebody that covers the Patriots, like I'm
- 1:43:55Speaker 3: starting to study up on the Jaguars. Like where does
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: Josh Heinz Allen line up? Does he line up over
- 1:44:00Speaker 3: the left tackle or the right tackle? I can go
- 1:44:03Speaker 3: to PFF and I can find out he lines up
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: over the left tackle in two seconds. So that's where
- 1:44:08Speaker 3: the value, like if you get, don't pay attention to
- 1:44:11Speaker 3: the grades.
- 1:44:11Speaker 8: No, but the problem is, is that people who don't
- 1:44:13Speaker 8: really study it, they go to those grades, they take
- 1:44:16Speaker 8: them as fact. Then, you know, and, Using Will Campbell
- 1:44:18Speaker 8: as an example, I think Will Campbell's been pretty solid,
- 1:44:21Speaker 8: but you watch the game, you know that he had
- 1:44:23Speaker 8: a lot of help in that game. It wasn't a
- 1:44:24Speaker 8: lot of one-on-one pass blocking. Meanwhile, somebody's going to take
- 1:44:27Speaker 8: his PFF grade and be like, we've got a superstar
- 1:44:30Speaker 8: left tackle coming when it's like, this is team defense.
- 1:44:33Speaker 4: The offensive line in general, they've surrendered some pressure here
- 1:44:38Speaker 4: in these games.
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: Can we talk about Jared Wilson?
- 1:44:40Speaker 8: I just, I was really surprised yesterday when Vrabel came
- 1:44:43Speaker 8: out and just said that.
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: I don't know if I've ever heard that before in
- 1:44:45Speaker 2: a press conference.
- 1:44:45Speaker 4: Didn't play well.
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: Didn't play, didn't play.
- 1:44:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:44:48Speaker 3: I mean, I had him with four pressures. Keanu Benton
- 1:44:51Speaker 3: beat him three times with the same move, the same
- 1:44:53Speaker 3: swim move three times in the game. I mean, the
- 1:44:57Speaker 3: stunts with Van Roten, like how many reps have they
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: gotten next to each other?
- 1:45:01Speaker 6: It's new.
- 1:45:02Speaker 3: It's, you know, okay, I'll give some grace there. With that,
- 1:45:06Speaker 3: the one positive I would say about Wilson, the second-level
- 1:45:09Speaker 3: blocks are really, really good.
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: When he gets on the move and somebody's smaller.
- 1:45:13Speaker 4: And Vrabel did mention those.
- 1:45:14Speaker 3: Yeah, like when he gets up to the linebackers and
- 1:45:18Speaker 3: he gets into some space, you know, he had a
- 1:45:19Speaker 3: really good block on Henderson's touchdown run, too, where he
- 1:45:22Speaker 3: cleans out the linebacker. I did that a couple of
- 1:45:24Speaker 3: times in this game. Like those are impressive blocks. Like
- 1:45:27Speaker 3: those are the ones that nerds like me clip and
- 1:45:30Speaker 3: post on Twitter. And I like, look at Jared Wilson
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: blocking 10 yards down the field. But the pass protection was,
- 1:45:36Speaker 3: was shaking. He's usually pretty okay in pass protection, but
- 1:45:40Speaker 3: this one was not one of his best.
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: Boston cream says, Hey Mike, As the defensive guy on
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: the panel and as a guy who only had 40,
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: I think, penalty minutes in 98 games at one of
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: the highest levels in college hockey.
- 1:45:52Speaker 5: He looked that up.
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: How do you feel about the Patriots' defensive penalties thus far?
- 1:45:56Speaker 4: Stalker.
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: Nothing's really bumpy. It's too far. They've been a lot. No,
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: I think he's saying, aren't you happy with it?
- 1:46:04Speaker 7: I think.
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. It's kind of out of nowhere.
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: They had one on third down that gave them a
- 1:46:09Speaker 4: first down the other day, a pass interference or a
- 1:46:11Speaker 4: defensive hold.
- 1:46:12Speaker 5: Kevin Bayard.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:46:14Speaker 4: But I can't remember too many others.
- 1:46:16Speaker 5: Yeah, Bayard got a little handsy.
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: No, I'm pretty encouraged overall, you know, by the defense.
- 1:46:21Speaker 8: I mean, just, you know, being so concerned about the
- 1:46:24Speaker 8: edge position and just, you know, being encouraged, what we've
- 1:46:26Speaker 8: seen from Elijah Ponder being encouraged, you know, with Gabe
- 1:46:29Speaker 8: Ackes as he's gotten up to speed.
- 1:46:31Speaker 4: I'm more encouraged by Zach Kaur.
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: Zach Kaur, that's great, too. Because dialing it up.
- 1:46:36Speaker 4: Well, he did it last year, and you're like, But
- 1:46:38Speaker 4: isn't the same thing true that we just said about offense?
- 1:46:41Speaker 4: Like teams said, well, we can't make, we got to
- 1:46:44Speaker 4: make sure we don't get beat by these different packages
- 1:46:46Speaker 4: that they're putting together to get pressure. Well, I don't
- 1:46:49Speaker 4: know if they're all the same, if they're different, but
- 1:46:51Speaker 4: Zach core's pressure packages are working just like they did
- 1:46:54Speaker 4: in the playoffs last year.
- 1:46:55Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:46:55Speaker 4: So I think that there, I saw one stat that
- 1:46:58Speaker 4: they're like the fourth highest blitz rate.
- 1:47:01Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:47:01Speaker 3: Dexter had him at six, maybe after Monday night football
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: had changed. but they're up over 40% blitz rate, and
- 1:47:09Speaker 3: they're also.
- 1:47:09Speaker 4: And it's working.
- 1:47:10Speaker 3: Yeah, they're about 50% pressure rate when they blitz. So
- 1:47:14Speaker 3: the blitzes are also getting home, and a lot of
- 1:47:15Speaker 3: it is man blitzing, obviously, with man coverage behind it.
- 1:47:19Speaker 3: Every once in a while, they'll run, like, a tricky
- 1:47:21Speaker 3: two or a cover two or something like that behind
- 1:47:24Speaker 3: it just as a changeup. But for the most part,
- 1:47:26Speaker 3: it's Gonzalez on the best receiver, and we're blitzing. And
- 1:47:29Speaker 3: those two linebackers, man, they blitz, like... Spillane and Ellis
- 1:47:34Speaker 3: are just tremendous blitzers, both of them.
- 1:47:36Speaker 4: And I think it's going to be interesting. Again, we'll
- 1:47:38Speaker 4: move ahead. This is usually our Wednesday stuff. I think
- 1:47:42Speaker 4: they're going to stay aggressive, and I think you're going
- 1:47:44Speaker 4: to keep seeing Zach Kord do these things. Does it put,
- 1:47:48Speaker 4: as Ev likes to say, does it put Trevor Lawrence
- 1:47:51Speaker 4: in a blender, or does Trevor Lawrence say, I've been
- 1:47:53Speaker 4: around long enough. I'm still.
- 1:47:56Speaker 4: You know, athletic enough to beat this stuff. And I
- 1:47:59Speaker 4: have some receivers. I don't think it's the greatest set
- 1:48:02Speaker 4: of receivers, but it's a pretty good set of receivers.
- 1:48:06Speaker 4: So is this offense better suited to handle it than
- 1:48:09Speaker 4: a 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers and a backup quarterback?
- 1:48:12Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, you saw a lot of pressure last
- 1:48:14Speaker 8: week from Denver, especially with Zach Allen.
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: I mean, I thought he still played okay.
- 1:48:17Speaker 5: Their defensive line kind of took over the game.
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:48:20Speaker 8: Know, the pregnant is their left guard. Who's I mean, good,
- 1:48:22Speaker 8: aggressive young guy, rookie.
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: That's the big thing. He left guards.
- 1:48:26Speaker 4: Coming out of Jackson. There's a big question marks with
- 1:48:28Speaker 4: their protection.
- 1:48:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:48:30Speaker 3: That's what, cause I, you know, it was like, how
- 1:48:32Speaker 3: do they only score 13 points in this game? And
- 1:48:34Speaker 3: that was why, I mean, the Broncos defensive line kind
- 1:48:37Speaker 3: of took over the game and Nito.
- 1:48:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:48:39Speaker 3: They, they had a good game and, um, I thought
- 1:48:43Speaker 3: Lawrence made a couple of plays under pressure. Uh, I
- 1:48:46Speaker 3: don't think it, you know, he's pretty athletic. He's pretty
- 1:48:48Speaker 3: strong dude in the pocket. I thought he made a
- 1:48:51Speaker 3: couple of them, but, uh, the pressure was noticeable and
- 1:48:54Speaker 3: pregnant was like, was the guy I was like, let's
- 1:48:56Speaker 3: get Barmore and Williams on this dude.
- 1:48:59Speaker 6: Right?
- 1:48:59Speaker 5: Like that is the guy you're, you're circling.
- 1:49:01Speaker 3: So, uh, but they Jacksonville is, you know, it's Liam Cohn,
- 1:49:05Speaker 3: it's a Sean McVay, type stuff. If the West coast
- 1:49:09Speaker 3: offense did, it's all about early downs with a team
- 1:49:12Speaker 3: like Jacksonville. Like if you get them into drop back,
- 1:49:15Speaker 3: then you're, I like the Patriots chances. Like you were
- 1:49:17Speaker 3: talking about the blitzes and stuff like that, but they're
- 1:49:20Speaker 3: a good run game, really well-designed run game, good play
- 1:49:24Speaker 3: action passes off the run game. If you got get
- 1:49:27Speaker 3: caught in that first and second down loop where you
- 1:49:29Speaker 3: just can't get them into third and pass, like that's
- 1:49:31Speaker 3: when they stay ahead of the chains and that's when
- 1:49:33Speaker 3: they kill you.
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: Chuckie's in Wisconsin. What's up, Chuckie?
- 1:49:37Speaker 4: Chuck and Cheese.
- 1:49:37Speaker 10: Hey, guys.
- 1:49:38Speaker 12: How are you doing?
- 1:49:38Speaker 7: Good.
- 1:49:40Speaker 12: Yeah, hey, a lot of things on my mind, but
- 1:49:42Speaker 12: I don't know. I think we'll go with Paul's comment
- 1:49:46Speaker 12: a few minutes ago about what's different this year.
- 1:49:49Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:49:51Speaker 12: I think, Paul, I can sum it up with the
- 1:49:53Speaker 12: word expectations.
- 1:49:56Speaker 4: Yeah, that's changed. That's absolutely changed.
- 1:49:58Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:50:00Speaker 12: But most importantly, the thing that's really been weighing on
- 1:50:03Speaker 12: me since Sunday is the Joey Porter Jr., that we
- 1:50:08Speaker 12: were made aware of with the Steelers coming to town.
- 1:50:12Speaker 12: Drake Mays got a lot on the line, like $ 70
- 1:50:15Speaker 12: million worth a lot on the line. Is there any
- 1:50:18Speaker 12: chance that he's beginning to big game hunt more to
- 1:50:22Speaker 12: get it in his head that he has to be
- 1:50:24Speaker 12: the best quarterback to get that salary?
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: I can't rule it out.
- 1:50:28Speaker 3: I think the first point about expectations and pressure, like,
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: not pressure on him physically, like pressure, pressure, I think is.
- 1:50:39Speaker 4: Valid.
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: Valid.
- 1:50:41Speaker 4: All valid.
- 1:50:41Speaker 3: And I think our expectations and our bar has risen
- 1:50:44Speaker 3: for him because we know how good he can be.
- 1:50:46Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:50:47Speaker 8: I guess the first place for me I look at
- 1:50:49Speaker 8: is the recent history and, you know, looking like it's
- 1:50:52Speaker 8: a tonnage thing. The tough performances have kind of built
- 1:50:55Speaker 8: on him. I do think it's valid to think about
- 1:50:57Speaker 8: looking forward.
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: I hope he isn't. I just think that's a bad
- 1:50:59Speaker 2: way to go into the season.
- 1:51:00Speaker 5: I don't think that's what it is.
- 1:51:01Speaker 2: You know, I don't really... I just... To me, it's more.
- 1:51:04Speaker 8: He's had some tough matchup after tough matchup, and it's
- 1:51:07Speaker 8: kind of in the blender right now.
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: But there's no doubt one of the things that's changed
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: is expectations.
- 1:51:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:51:14Speaker 4: Add it to the list.
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: Brayden in Jacksonville. What's up, Brayden?
- 1:51:19Speaker 4: Hey, how y'all doing?
- 1:51:21Speaker 13: Thank you for having me.
- 1:51:22Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:51:23Speaker 7: Oh, boy.
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: And the countdown.
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: Ten, nine. The eagle has landed. All right.
- 1:51:31Speaker 19: I'm a big Jaguars fan.
- 1:51:33Speaker 13: And I was, you know, I watched the Patriots and
- 1:51:37Speaker 13: the Steelers game on Sunday and there was a big
- 1:51:41Speaker 13: stack that they got on Rogers. And I was wondering,
- 1:51:44Speaker 13: what was your thoughts on that play?
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: It's a big play. Christian Ellis.
- 1:51:48Speaker 8: I mean, big hit kind of stuff you got to
- 1:51:50Speaker 8: do to Aaron Rogers to get him out of his game.
- 1:51:52Speaker 5: I mean, one of the hardest hits that you'll see
- 1:51:54Speaker 5: in this day and age. In the NFL.
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: And it was clean as a whistle.
- 1:52:00Speaker 3: They didn't sort out the blitz correctly. The left tackle
- 1:52:03Speaker 3: should have bumped out to Ellis. They actually had the numbers.
- 1:52:05Speaker 3: They were sliding the line that way and they should
- 1:52:07Speaker 3: have been able to block it. So Rodgers isn't expecting
- 1:52:10Speaker 3: Ellis to come free because he thinks that they have
- 1:52:13Speaker 3: the numbers sliding the line that direction.
- 1:52:16Speaker 4: And he told you he didn't even get a heads up.
- 1:52:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:52:19Speaker 3: That's why he got blindsided was because he's standing in
- 1:52:22Speaker 3: the pocket thinking I got four going that way and
- 1:52:25Speaker 3: the four didn't go that way. And so Ellis was
- 1:52:27Speaker 3: a free runner to the quarterback. I would have liked
- 1:52:30Speaker 3: to have seen them land on the ball instead of
- 1:52:31Speaker 3: trying to scoop it and score it.
- 1:52:34Speaker 4: That's a touchdown opportunity. Take it.
- 1:52:36Speaker 13: They should have just fell on the ball.
- 1:52:38Speaker 4: Agreed.
- 1:52:39Speaker 13: Like, just fell on the ball.
- 1:52:40Speaker 3: After the third guy that kicked the can down the road,
- 1:52:43Speaker 3: I would have liked to have just gotten the ball.
- 1:52:46Speaker 7: At that point.
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: They play with their inside linebackers a lot, though, Braden.
- 1:52:49Speaker 8: They're going to be trying to get to Trevor Lawrence
- 1:52:51Speaker 8: this week with those guys, Spillane and Ellis.
- 1:52:54Speaker 13: I'm afraid, you know, I'm afraid week three, you know,
- 1:52:57Speaker 13: the Jaguars, you know, we got the Eagles, we got
- 1:53:00Speaker 13: the Texans in London. I'm worried about that, but I
- 1:53:02Speaker 13: know the Patriots are, you know... They got Drake May,
- 1:53:06Speaker 13: he's young, but I kind of, you know, what's your
- 1:53:09Speaker 13: thoughts on him, you know, going to the Super Bowl and,
- 1:53:11Speaker 13: you know, very talented quarterback, but he didn't come up,
- 1:53:14Speaker 13: you know, good against the Seahawks. Do you think he's,
- 1:53:16Speaker 13: you know, got a lot of pressure on him to
- 1:53:18Speaker 13: try to overplay and, you know, not be comfortable? Do
- 1:53:21Speaker 13: you think he's got a lot of, like, insecurities that
- 1:53:23Speaker 13: he's going to force things against Jacksonville?
- 1:53:25Speaker 8: Yeah, we're thinking about benching him, actually. He hasn't been
- 1:53:28Speaker 8: up to par. No, I'm just kidding.
- 1:53:31Speaker 3: I actually think these two quarterbacks are not– all that different. Like,
- 1:53:37Speaker 3: I think with Trevor Lawrence, when Trevor Lawrence is on,
- 1:53:40Speaker 3: Trevor Lawrence.
- 1:53:41Speaker 5: Is really, really good. And then he has these.
- 1:53:44Speaker 3: decisions, these ruts, uh, that you're just like, what are we,
- 1:53:48Speaker 3: what are we doing here? But like, when you look
- 1:53:51Speaker 3: at him, he obviously looks the part of a franchise
- 1:53:54Speaker 3: quarterback and there's stretches where he looks like a franchise quarterback,
- 1:53:58Speaker 3: but there's always like that little bit extra that you
- 1:54:01Speaker 3: just leave you wanting more. And I was always worried
- 1:54:04Speaker 3: with Drake May going all the way back to, uh,
- 1:54:06Speaker 3: when they drafted him, was he going to be more
- 1:54:09Speaker 3: Trevor Lawrence, Justin Herbert, like that sort of guy, uh,
- 1:54:13Speaker 3: and less Josh Allen.
- 1:54:15Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:54:16Speaker 3: And that was like kind of always my number one
- 1:54:18Speaker 3: concern was that he was going to, there's always going
- 1:54:21Speaker 3: to be that like, yeah, he's good. And he passes
- 1:54:23Speaker 3: the eye test, but there could be a little bit
- 1:54:25Speaker 3: more there. And that's kind of how I feel about Trevor.
- 1:54:28Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:54:28Speaker 6: Well, listen, it's been fun. We're going to so much fun.
