Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Raisin the Curve, a podcast designed to teach you everything that you need to know to be better with your money.
- 0:06Come and learn alongside me, Sophie Hallwright, a total beginner from the finance expert Victoria Harris.
- 0:12So I've asked all of the questions you wish you could so that finance, investing and growing your wealth actually makes sense.
- 0:18Yes, it's expert education but with promise will not be boring and in the wise words of sheer...
- 0:22My mom said to me, you know sweetheart, one day you should settle down and marry a rich man.
- 0:28My mom, I am a rich man.
- 0:30Come and talk and learn and laugh with us because together we really can raise the curve.
- 0:36So it's Halloween and...
- 0:38Really? Yes it.
- 0:40So in all honesty, Vic, I decided to take the liberty of choosing what we were dressing up as.
- 0:44You did.
- 0:46After last year's banger hold on.
- 0:48In my defence, I put a lot more effort into my costume than you did.
- 0:52It epitomised us.
- 0:54For me, I was like, right, I could order a sheet off Amazon, cut two holes, I'm done.
- 0:58So it's like painting a face, cutting out a triangle.
- 1:02It's a pyramid scheme. That was genius.
- 1:04Anyway, the point is, I thought if I'm going all out, so are you.
- 1:08So I've chosen two outfits.
- 1:12One that impacted the economy this year really well.
- 1:16And one that did not.
- 1:18That's quite good for you. Thank you so much.
- 1:20Originally, I was actually going to wrote this and put both of the shit one.
- 1:22Taylor Swift?
- 1:23Taylor Swift.
- 1:24Damn it!
- 1:25Is it?
- 1:27I'm trying to think it was what I wanted to dress up as in, I thought, nah.
- 1:30We're doing it for you.
- 1:32I guess I was so gutted if you guessed both before you didn't pick one out.
- 1:36No, no, you were not.
- 1:38I guess I can just say it on your face.
- 1:40No, it's close.
- 1:42Just short, sorry.
- 1:44You're really rolling the game for me.
- 1:46Okay, you get to pick.
- 1:48Okay, sorry.
- 1:51Oh, fuck off.
- 1:52Oh my God, I'm so scared.
- 1:56I guess it's done.
- 1:58Inflation, it didn't pick the economy.
- 2:00Well done.
- 2:01Yes.
- 2:02And you're Taylor Swift.
- 2:03Nice.
- 2:04Yeah, okay.
- 2:05Great.
- 2:06I'm going to be inflation.
- 2:07Heather.
- 2:08You just worked.
- 2:12Now, just to set the same for anyone that's not watching the video.
- 2:16You need to watch.
- 2:19That's true, Ashley.
- 2:21This is not an audio only episode.
- 2:23I'm actually crying because I can't stop laughing.
- 2:26You might be able to hear that.
- 2:28That is my costume.
- 2:31It's Halloween.
- 2:32We thought, do you know what?
- 2:34We need to go to extreme lengths, Heather.
- 2:36There's lots of people that are not investing it.
- 2:39And I think it's scary.
- 2:40They think it's scary and it's not for them and we thought,
- 2:44you look so good.
- 2:45Do you think?
- 2:46Yeah.
- 2:47Actually, I honestly hate Swift for me.
- 2:50Oh, wow.
- 2:51That's quite a lot bigger than I thought.
- 2:53Yeah.
- 2:54Honestly, given the situation, I love the inflating.
- 2:56She's in a giant brain, inflatable outfit.
- 3:00She's inflation.
- 3:01I'm inflation.
- 3:02So inflation had a negative impact on the economy.
- 3:05And so I am a big giant inflation.
- 3:09I mean, the positive thing here is that you have deflated in the last five seconds.
- 3:14Yeah.
- 3:15I do say big for long just like in real life.
- 3:18It's actually quite genius, honestly.
- 3:20Yeah.
- 3:21It's very good.
- 3:22When you are a very chic Taylor Swift.
- 3:25Yeah.
- 3:26She sold millions of tickets.
- 3:28Yeah.
- 3:29The amount of money that this woman has pumped into the global economy is a corner.
- 3:34But how is this finance and investing related, Sophie?
- 3:38So this episode is for your friends who avoid talking about money.
- 3:43They don't have no idea about investing.
- 3:45This is for your mum's that know they should be investing and have no idea what to do.
- 3:49This is a subtle little hey.
- 3:51Give this a listen.
- 3:53It's not that scary.
- 3:54It's not that scary.
- 3:56But 73% of women think they're not knowledgeable enough.
- 4:01And they're way more likely to just ignore it.
- 4:05Not invest.
- 4:06It's too hard basket.
- 4:07We need to change that.
- 4:08It's not that scary.
- 4:09It is actually a serious problem.
- 4:11The amount of women that are not investing is actually kind of terrifying.
- 4:15It's very concerning.
- 4:16That is a serious part.
- 4:17Actually, not investing itself.
- 4:19And that women are going to end up with 40% less money to spend when they retire than men.
- 4:27That is scary.
- 4:28We are ending up with half the amount of wealth.
- 4:31That's what you need to think of.
- 4:33The whole point of this next part is I want you to pretend that it's Sophie five years ago.
- 4:37I feel way less scared of investing.
- 4:40In fact, I'm not actually scared of investing at all anymore.
- 4:43Way less wrinkles, way less grey hair, rude.
- 4:46However, one of the top things that scares people when it comes to investing,
- 4:51I'm going to quote these actually as if it's me five years ago.
- 4:54I'm worried I'm going to lose all my money if I start investing.
- 4:57There's so much data and statistics and research and history in the fact that
- 5:04there's ways you can invest where you don't lose money.
- 5:07And we're going to talk about it.
- 5:09And we're going to make sure that you have all the skills and knowledge there.
- 5:12Put your best foot forward.
- 5:13Love it.
- 5:14Okay, what about?
- 5:15I just don't understand any of the language when it comes to investing.
- 5:19There's so many acronyms as just confusing.
- 5:22You're not the only one.
- 5:23Or I used to hate the acronyms.
- 5:26In fact, I still do.
- 5:27They make me really annoyed.
- 5:29But honestly, we're going to show you that if you break it down,
- 5:32there's such easy ways of explaining things that make so much more sense.
- 5:36But it's not confusing.
- 5:37It's not at all.
- 5:38And actually, we've put together a little glossary with the top easy to understand words.
- 5:43If you wanted, they're in the podcast show notes, you can download them.
- 5:46I think this is a massive scare for a lot of people.
- 5:49I've been told to say for a rainy day with inflation,
- 5:53the rising cost of living, I'm really scared about risking my savings.
- 5:57The thing with inflation, me,
- 6:01is that if you don't invest,
- 6:05you will be able to afford less in the future.
- 6:07Because inflation is like a little gremlin, like myself,
- 6:11eating away at your money,
- 6:13meaning that you can afford less.
- 6:15So you might have $100 in the bank,
- 6:18and you can buy five things at the supermarket.
- 6:21And then fast forward a year, that $100 might...
- 6:24You might only be able to put four things,
- 6:26because the prices have all gone up, even though you've got the same amount.
- 6:29In order to afford the five things in the future,
- 6:32you need to be investing in growing your money as well.
- 6:35I have heard so many stories of people losing money.
- 6:38I'm really not sure who to trust.
- 6:40You don't have to give your money away to someone.
- 6:42You can actually invest it yourself.
- 6:44And honestly, start with like $10, $20. Start small.
- 6:47And then if you lose that, it's not the end of the world.
- 6:49But I also think people that share those stories about losing money.
- 6:54For every one of them,
- 6:56there's 10 people that have made money as well.
- 6:59It feels like to invest I need to have a lot of money,
- 7:02and I don't know where to start.
- 7:04You don't need a lot of money.
- 7:05Most trading platforms you can literally put in a dollar.
- 7:08So that excuse really rolls me up,
- 7:11because most people can find a dollar.
- 7:15And I know that doesn't sound exciting,
- 7:17but you don't need a lot of money.
- 7:20You just need a plan.
- 7:22You need discipline.
- 7:24You need to make it a habit, and you need to have a plan.
- 7:27Can I just mention before we get to the main part of this episode?
- 7:30What an absolute commitment from us.
- 7:34Benny, our Friday night dress-up is Taylor Swift and inflation
- 7:38to teach beginners about investing,
- 7:41like this is commitment to the cause.
- 7:43I'm really sad inflation's gotten so skinny.
- 7:46Hey, it's a good thing.
- 7:48Yeah, true.
- 7:49It's a really great thing.
- 7:50We want inflation to be about 2 to 3%.
- 7:53Not before when I walked into the room and it was nearly 10.
- 7:56Let's just explain what investing actually is.
- 7:59So investing is putting money into anything
- 8:02that you think will increase in value over time.
- 8:04So property, for example,
- 8:06you invest in property, you buy a house,
- 8:08and the hope that you'll sell it in the future for a higher price.
- 8:11You can invest in the common one's stocks,
- 8:16bonds, property, all of that.
- 8:18But there's actually lots of other things like jewelry,
- 8:21handbags, art, cars, and even yourself.
- 8:26If you're investing in yourself,
- 8:28school, university, that's all investing in yourself.
- 8:31Any training because then you can earn more
- 8:34and produce more of a profit later.
- 8:37And what would you say,
- 8:39like if there's someone listening,
- 8:41it's like, okay, but why would I invest?
- 8:43I don't get it.
- 8:44I like my money in the bank.
- 8:45Why would I do it?
- 8:46Yeah.
- 8:47I think it's security.
- 8:50I think having an additional income stream,
- 8:54it means you don't have to work as hard,
- 8:56because it's going to be a period of your life
- 8:58where you can't work when you're older.
- 9:00So you need to plan for that at retirement.
- 9:03You're not going to be able to work until you die.
- 9:05So you need to plan for that period of time
- 9:07and you can't work.
- 9:08And there's a have options.
- 9:09I have options to live my life how I want in terms of,
- 9:13cool, I can go on a holiday with my friends,
- 9:15or cool, I've got money to buy a house.
- 9:18You know, it gives you flexibility and gives you choice.
- 9:20You invest your money because you want to have more of it.
- 9:24It gives you freedom.
- 9:25It gives you financial independence.
- 9:26Yeah.
- 9:27Even though people might be sitting there
- 9:28but I earn an income and that gives me financial independence.
- 9:31It's like, no, it doesn't.
- 9:32You're still reliant on your job.
- 9:33So having your money growing while you sleep
- 9:36is giving you more and more freedom each day
- 9:40to not work or spend how you please.
- 9:43That's a good point.
- 9:44A lot of people don't have to work
- 9:46because they can live on their investments
- 9:48because their investments are not only growing in value over time,
- 9:51like a house does.
- 9:52Say you're renting a house out and you're getting rent.
- 9:55It's the same thing you can be getting dividends,
- 9:57which is essentially if you buy something in the stock market
- 10:01that then pays little bits out to you
- 10:03every month or every quarter or once a year.
- 10:05But this is really important for women as well,
- 10:07investing because statistics show the majority of women
- 10:12are reliant on partners or family
- 10:15or friends.
- 10:16It's a really dangerous place to be in.
- 10:19You don't have the freedom of choice
- 10:22because it's not your money or it's
- 10:24you haven't saved or invested
- 10:27and therefore you can't get out of sticky situations.
- 10:29I want to play a random game.
- 10:32So this is something that we've talked about a lot.
- 10:36Trying to figure out ways of demystifying really key concepts
- 10:42when it comes to investing
- 10:43because you'll hear words like diversification
- 10:47or you're like one of them, me.
- 10:49I don't know how to average it.
- 10:51Even retirement, we recoil.
- 10:53We've now called that the 20-year holiday.
- 10:56Because you're going to be technically on holiday
- 10:58and we want you to feel excited about that.
- 11:00A lot of people struggle to visualize retirement
- 11:02but you can visualize a holiday
- 11:04and visualize what kind of holiday you want to have for 20 years.
- 11:08So it makes it easier to be like,
- 11:10I'm going to squirrel money away and invest it.
- 11:13Come back and invest anyone a giant golden egg.
- 11:15Yeah.
- 11:16So how do we explain the stock market back?
- 11:18So the stock market is like a farmer's market.
- 11:22So when you go to a farmer's market you go there
- 11:24because there's lots of produce, lots of choice,
- 11:26lots of things you can buy.
- 11:28And that's exactly the same reason people go to a stock market.
- 11:31It's where companies and investors come
- 11:33and for a farmer's market it's where buyers and sellers come.
- 11:36So if you were to imagine yourself at the market
- 11:39and you were wandering around with your basket
- 11:41and you were picking up, I don't know,
- 11:43you thought, this cheese looks delicious
- 11:45and you saw the guy behind the stall and he looks nice
- 11:47and he looks delicious.
- 11:48You know, you decided that you think
- 11:49that you trust him and his cheese.
- 11:51Oh, sorry, the hell just going.
- 11:55And then you go to the next stall
- 11:57and they've got some half-price skirkins.
- 11:59And then you wander along.
- 12:00You're like, oh my God, I can get so many cucumbers.
- 12:03Yeah.
- 12:04What we're getting at is it's exactly the same concept.
- 12:07Stock market just sounds confusing.
- 12:09But think of it like a farmer's market
- 12:11because that's all it is.
- 12:12Yeah.
- 12:13And so the idea is you want to obviously look at something
- 12:15before you buy it.
- 12:16And it's just like when it comes to investing,
- 12:18you want to buy things that you think are going to be delicious
- 12:21or successful.
- 12:22Yeah.
- 12:23And obviously the idea of it is that
- 12:25some of the things in a market might sell super well
- 12:29and then you take them home and you try them.
- 12:31You're like, that was disgusting.
- 12:33That cheese is gross.
- 12:34And if I think it's gross,
- 12:35lots of other people might think it's gross and not buy it.
- 12:37So you want to buy things, like I was saying before,
- 12:40that more people will demand in the future.
- 12:42Yeah.
- 12:43So ideally you want to be buying the most beautiful cheese
- 12:46before anyone realizes it's beautiful cheese.
- 12:48Yeah.
- 12:49So the next concept or analogy is
- 12:52have you kissed more than one person?
- 12:54Yeah.
- 12:56Same.
- 12:57Are we talking at the same time?
- 12:58Or why?
- 12:59I don't have done a four-week kiss before.
- 13:00Have you ever sat primary school
- 13:02when we met at the bathrooms and we were like,
- 13:04three to one?
- 13:05That explains things.
- 13:06So diversification is one of those terms
- 13:09that is thrown around so much.
- 13:11You want to be diversified
- 13:12and this seems that you want to spread the risk.
- 13:15Spread the risk.
- 13:16And spread the love.
- 13:17So let's just say you got on a dating app
- 13:20and you know, you're swiping, you match with something
- 13:23like they seem really cute and cool
- 13:25and you talked to them and you think it's all great
- 13:27and you honestly go from zero to a thousand.
- 13:29I've never done that.
- 13:30What are you talking about?
- 13:31Yeah.
- 13:32But it's just like on a dating app,
- 13:33that person could not turn out to be
- 13:35who you're hoping that they are.
- 13:37And you put all your eggs in their basket?
- 13:39Yeah.
- 13:40Yeah.
- 13:41So hoping that he was so sexual.
- 13:43I was hot and tender.
- 13:45I mean, you could be dating someone
- 13:49that has a secret family on the other side of the world
- 13:52you don't know about.
- 13:53So sometimes until you're really sure,
- 13:55maybe you want to keep your options open.
- 13:57It's just like investing.
- 13:58Yeah.
- 13:59Date around, invest in lots of different things
- 14:01because one could be a dud or two could be a dud.
- 14:04But you want to spread it around
- 14:06because you want to pick the winner.
- 14:08You know, you want to pick the one
- 14:09that's going to do really well.
- 14:11Yeah.
- 14:12Have you ever skydived or bungee jumping?
- 14:16Both.
- 14:17And actually, I have.
- 14:19Have you done bungee jumping?
- 14:21Love skydiving.
- 14:22What did you love about skydiving?
- 14:24I would have thought that was way scarier
- 14:26because you're so far away from the world.
- 14:29Like, it's tiny.
- 14:30But you're falling through it.
- 14:32Where it's a bungee jump.
- 14:33Your legs are strapped.
- 14:35You've got to dive into like rocks.
- 14:37It's like, he'd first.
- 14:38So we talk about this when we talk about risk
- 14:42because just like so for now,
- 14:44we have very different tolerances to risk.
- 14:46And that is fine.
- 14:48Everyone has different levels of risk.
- 14:50And it's also knowing when to take different levels of risk.
- 14:53When you're younger and you've got longer term goals,
- 14:56you can take a lot more risk in terms of your investing
- 14:59if you're investing for your 20-year holiday.
- 15:01Whereas if you're maybe a bit older,
- 15:03you don't want to take as much risk
- 15:05because you want to protect your money.
- 15:06You don't want to take that risk.
- 15:08So risk can be super, super helpful in growing your money.
- 15:13But also, it's a bit of a weird concept
- 15:16because risk is like,
- 15:18but also it can be fun and exciting.
- 15:21And think about the idea of risk and so many different ways
- 15:24that having done a bungee in a skydive,
- 15:26I am so scared of doing that.
- 15:28Yet when it comes to different parts of my life,
- 15:30I'm totally comfortable being more risky,
- 15:32whereas you're not in some ways.
- 15:34I think the point is,
- 15:35when we first started talking about risk in the very beginning,
- 15:38when we first started this podcast,
- 15:40I didn't totally understand the concept.
- 15:42Really all that it means is that some companies are steady
- 15:45and like pretty sure that they're going to be fine.
- 15:48Obviously there's always a level of risk.
- 15:51But how likely is it that you're never ever going to need
- 15:54a blue paper again,
- 15:55or never ever going to buy groceries?
- 15:57Those companies are going to be solid.
- 15:59The most risky and inverted commerce companies are things like tech companies.
- 16:04Which have done most well.
- 16:06And you think about the world we live in and you look around
- 16:08and technology is taking over everywhere.
- 16:10Risk can help boost your returns as well
- 16:13because with high risks, usually comes high returns.
- 16:17It's what level of risk you're willing to take.
- 16:19If it's going to stress you out and you're going to be worried about it
- 16:22and fretting over it and wanting to constantly check your investments
- 16:25and it's going to consume you, then don't invest in it.
- 16:28But I also just think in general,
- 16:29if that's how you're approaching investing,
- 16:31just you shouldn't be investing it.
- 16:33You're not ready because I think if you understand investing
- 16:35and you're investing in the right way,
- 16:37and you use the tools and the education that we're talking about
- 16:40and that you can find anywhere in our platform,
- 16:43that you can invest in a way that you are being really sensible.
- 16:46If you get to a point you're ready to invest and you start doing it
- 16:49in ways that make sense to you,
- 16:51I don't think you'll be in a position where you're checking your investments
- 16:54having being up all night sweating,
- 16:56whatever, because you will have made clever decisions
- 17:00that you know, yeah, there might be like a little bit of risk
- 17:03in the sense that tech companies could go up and down.
- 17:06But it's not as scary or black and white or intense
- 17:10as the word risk sounds, that thing.
- 17:13And there's so many things to invest in.
- 17:15Not only is it different assets like we spoke about before,
- 17:18there's different companies within the stock market.
- 17:21There's just so many options.
- 17:23You're going to find something that you love.
- 17:26We just must apologise for anyone that is trying to watch this.
- 17:30Our camera has just died.
- 17:31Yes, it overheated.
- 17:33Let's talk about why it is so important for people to start young.
- 17:37It may be actually that's a bad use of the word
- 17:40because you can be any age you're starting to invest in,
- 17:42but as soon as possible,
- 17:44as soon as you start to feel comfortable with the idea of what investing is
- 17:47and you know where you want to put your money,
- 17:49why is doing it as soon as you can?
- 17:51A really good thing.
- 17:52Because every day that you don't invest
- 17:56is a day lost in terms of generating return.
- 17:59So the sooner you do it,
- 18:01the less you have to put away.
- 18:03So we're going to put a graph on the screen now
- 18:05and you can see that if you'd invested for 15 years,
- 18:10you'd have about $200,000.
- 18:13The blue is what you've put in
- 18:14and what you've actually put away into your investments.
- 18:17The green is compound interest.
- 18:20That's your money growing.
- 18:21That's not money you've put in.
- 18:22You've put in the blue amount
- 18:24and the green amount is the investing during the heavy lifting.
- 18:28That's what it means.
- 18:29The earlier you can start,
- 18:30you can see there in the later years
- 18:32just how little you have to put in
- 18:35but how much the investing
- 18:37and what we call compound interest has done.
- 18:40That graph to me, I'm like,
- 18:41gosh, I want to start ASAP.
- 18:43Yesterday.
- 18:44Yesterday, please.
- 18:45Yes.
- 18:46It would be fantastic.
- 18:48One of the things that really
- 18:50like hit home for me when we were first learning about investing
- 18:53is the idea that you can't save your weight
- 18:55of being a millionaire.
- 18:56Maybe in some capacity,
- 18:58if you're earning an absolute bucket load of money
- 19:02or you have a giant inheritance or something,
- 19:04but the reality is if you're wanting to get there
- 19:07in terms of large wealth,
- 19:09you need to invest your money.
- 19:11If you had money in the bank
- 19:13and it was earning say three to four percent return per year,
- 19:17you'd be looking at about $35,000 pounds
- 19:21whatever country you're in in the next 30 years.
- 19:24Whereas if you invested it,
- 19:26the same amount,
- 19:28but you'd invested it and remember the stock market
- 19:31has delivered about 10% return per year.
- 19:34So three to four percent versus 10%.
- 19:37You're looking at $200,000 in 30 years.
- 19:40So that's 35,000 versus 200,000.
- 19:43Like that is massive.
- 19:45It's such a difference just by taking a little bit more initiative
- 19:50and investing in the stock market instead of leaving in the bank.
- 19:55This is what I mean by,
- 19:56you're literally every day you don't do something
- 19:58is costing you money.
- 20:00Should we talk about the different types of strategies
- 20:02because one of the things that you may have heard terminology,
- 20:06throwing around is the idea of
- 20:07active or passive,
- 20:08what type of investing,
- 20:10how should I invest?
- 20:11An example of being quite active,
- 20:14it's just the idea you're putting more effort in.
- 20:16If you're being what they say is passive,
- 20:18it's just like setting and forgetting.
- 20:20What that means is that there is something for everyone.
- 20:23If you want to be a bit more of a passive lazy investor
- 20:28which makes great money,
- 20:30or if you want to be a bit more hands-on,
- 20:32and you're like,
- 20:33no, no, I actually want to put my money
- 20:35and invest in companies that I support.
- 20:38Then there's a place for you to.
- 20:40We're trying to make this as simple as possible
- 20:42because honestly, when you get these concepts,
- 20:44it is so easy.
- 20:46And for anyone who's listening to this going,
- 20:48I understood all of that while done to you
- 20:51because obviously you've been listening,
- 20:53you've been learning,
- 20:54and yeah, round of applause for those people.
- 20:57When we first started this podcast,
- 20:59like four and a half years ago,
- 21:01I knew nothing about the start market.
- 21:03I didn't understand what the start market was.
- 21:05I was so incredibly terrified, honestly,
- 21:08of investing.
- 21:09I just didn't understand it and that scared me.
- 21:11It's just so not like that anymore.
- 21:13And it's honestly,
- 21:14it's going to take you four years at all.
- 21:16I've been investing.
- 21:17It's just the idea that...
- 21:19These concepts are foreign and they'll get more familiar.
- 21:22Yeah, and don't feel embarrassed
- 21:24if you're listening to something.
- 21:25I don't get it.
- 21:26But what we've recommended is like,
- 21:28go write that to start
- 21:29and start listening to some of those earlier episodes
- 21:31because I, at that time, knew literally nothing
- 21:34and Vic was explaining things in a way
- 21:36that was like,
- 21:37we literally didn't move on until I got it.
- 21:39So you will learn so, so much.
- 21:41In terms of the Curve Weekly,
- 21:43which is our episode that goes out every week,
- 21:45that's a chance for you to learn more about,

- 21:50there might be business use,
- 21:51world news,
- 21:52and what you'll start to realize
- 21:53the more that you take part in these conversations,
- 21:55not just learning about investing,
- 21:56but the economy in general,
- 21:57is how incredibly intertwined it all is,
- 22:00and how important it is for women to care
- 22:02and actually start learning
