- 0:45to this episode, and if you loved this episode,
- 0:47please leave me a review. All right y 'all, let's
- 0:50dive into our weekly catch -ups. This week, gosh,
- 0:54what have I been up to is the best question ever.
- 0:56Honestly, am I fully refreshed from Iceland?
- 1:00I would say there was one day where I finally
- 1:02felt back to normal of like, oh my gosh, I have
- 1:04all this energy, what is tired, she's never heard
- 1:08of it, yada, yada, yada. And now I'm on my weekend
- 1:12and I'm exhausted. like actually truly exhausted
- 1:15but it is what it is um what is in is outside
- 1:20walks the weather has cooled down we're in false
- 1:23fall as we call it here in north kakalaki and
- 1:26i have truly enjoyed walking outside for about
- 1:29an hour a day um instead of going to the gym
- 1:32yes i know i need to go to the gym i need to
- 1:34go lift weights but the weather has been so beautiful
- 1:38it is definitely raining every day but we get
- 1:40a couple hours of sun and it's just not a million
- 1:43degrees anymore we don't feel like we live in
- 1:45Satan's armpit so I'm taking advantage of it
- 1:48before summer comes back full swing probably
- 1:50next week what is out um gosh uh what's out is
- 1:56flip -flops I went to church on Sunday as I do
- 2:02every Sunday and People wear flip -flops to church
- 2:05and I don't know why it just x me out. I don't
- 2:08like to see other people's feet I couldn't stop
- 2:10looking because there's this one time I was at
- 2:13church and I mean this time we sat outside this
- 2:16one time we sat inside and I remember I was sitting
- 2:19with my friend McKenna and this family to my
- 2:22right like one seat over They all took their
- 2:25shoes off. It's not even that they were wearing
- 2:27flip -flops like they all genuinely took their
- 2:29shoes off We were inside and I don't I don't
- 2:32like that. That was weird It was not the vibe
- 2:35and like first off no one wants to see your naked
- 2:37feet too Like what if they smell you probably
- 2:40don't know if they smell but the rest of us will
- 2:42be able to tell you if it smells or if your feet
- 2:44smell so like No, I don't think anyone, especially
- 2:48just social decorum and very anti flip flops,
- 2:52unless you're at the beach in a pool. If you've
- 2:54listened to the Modesty podcast, you know that
- 2:56I feel that way about flip flops. It's not a
- 2:59modesty thing. It's I don't want to see anybody's
- 3:02feet because they gross me out type of thing.
- 3:05Yeah. Anyways, that's all I have for you right
- 3:08now. Let's go ahead and dive in into today's
- 3:11episode. Alright y 'all, we are going to continue
- 3:20our journey down memory lane of Jesus' lineage.
- 3:24Last time we talked about Jacob and Esau, and
- 3:26today we're going to talk about Jacob's middle
- 3:28son, Judah. Judah's story actually picks up just
- 3:32as Joseph, the coat of many colors guy, gets
- 3:35sent off to Egypt. Judah comes in with his story
- 3:38in Genesis chapter 38. Let me tell you there
- 3:42is a lot to unpack there so we won't read it
- 3:45all but I'll give you the best overview I can
- 3:48but no promises. Okay so Judah gets married not
- 3:53once but twice and has three sons that get named
- 3:57within the first three verses of the chapter.
- 4:00There's really no need to go over those names,
- 4:03though, because two of the three die pretty early
- 4:06into the story. But before they die, Judah acquires
- 4:09a wife for his oldest. That's what that wife's
- 4:12name is Tamar. But then his oldest son dies.
- 4:16So he tells his other son to sleep with his dead
- 4:19brother's wife, as they did in that day, to get
- 4:22her pregnant. Now, his son sleeps with her, but
- 4:25he refuses to get the girl pregnant. And then
- 4:28he dies because, well, God said so. He ain't
- 4:31gonna let him do Tamar dirty like that. After
- 4:33both sons are dead, Judah tells her to go back
- 4:36to her family and stay there until his youngest
- 4:38is ready for her. So she does just that. Sometime
- 4:42passes and one of Judah's wives dies. But life
- 4:45goes on and a little later in chapter 38, girly
- 4:48pop aka Tamar hears he is traveling to shear
- 4:52some sheep with his son and sees that Kiddo is
- 4:55all grown up but hasn't been given to her yet.
- 4:58So she shows up no longer in morning clothes
- 5:01but chilling with the Veylon sitting on the side
- 5:03of the road that they should be passing through
- 5:06on and then Judah mistakes her for a prostitute
- 5:09aka a sex worker. Our guy Judah saw her with
- 5:13the Veylon and just assumed she was a part of
- 5:15the sex cult that had been hanging around and
- 5:18asked her to have sex with him and that he'd
- 5:20give her a go as payment. Our girl had a plan.
- 5:23So she said, I need insurance of this. So give
- 5:26me your staff and a couple other things of yours.
- 5:28And after that combo, they slept together. I
- 5:31want to give a side note in history that cult
- 5:34they assumed she was with or that cult he assumed
- 5:37she was with was a fertility pagan cult that
- 5:40believed that not just using sex to get money
- 5:43or obviously to get pregnant, but having sex
- 5:46was an act of worship to their God. and that
- 5:49it was a part of the rituals to help with the
- 5:52harvest and other things. Let's get back to the
- 5:55story though. Judah's a man of his word in this
- 5:57instance and sends his kid, sends his friend
- 6:00with the goat because God forbid he go himself.
- 6:04That friend can't find her and Judah basically
- 6:06says let's leave it because this is already embarrassing
- 6:09enough for me anyways. Homie finds out Tamar
- 6:13is pregnant three months later and says let's
- 6:16burn her at the stake. or something like that
- 6:18she's like sure but first identify the stuff
- 6:22for me real quick so I can give it back to my
- 6:24sperm donor because you know they belong to him
- 6:27and Judah goes and Judah's all of a sudden like
- 6:30oh crap now we are going to jump over and read
- 6:34verses 27 through 30 oh yeah read verses 27 through
- 6:3930 in chapter 38 one second let me flip there
- 6:42when the time of her labor came there were twins
- 6:46in her womb And when she was in labor, one put
- 6:50out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a red
- 6:52scarlet thread on his hand, saying, this one
- 6:55came out first. But as he drew back his hand,
- 6:58behold, his brother came out, and she said, what
- 7:01a breach you have made for yourself. Therefore,
- 7:04his name was called Perez. Afterwards, his brother
- 7:08came out with the scarlet thread on his hand,
- 7:10and his name was called Zara. Now, that's not
- 7:13the end of Judah's story. His story picks back
- 7:16up in Joseph's because while he was busy thinking
- 7:19his daughter -in -law was to prostitute, Joseph
- 7:22was busy in Egypt doing the hard work. In chapter
- 7:2642, we know Joseph's brothers come to Egypt in
- 7:29search of food because of the famine throughout
- 7:31the whole country. And Joseph says, I'll give
- 7:34you food this time, but don't come back without
- 7:36your youngest brother if you need more in the
- 7:38future. Well, they needed more. And Jacob tells
- 7:40Judah to go back and get more food. But he's
- 7:43like, but dad, I can't unless we bring Ben with
- 7:46us. We all know how that turned out. So let's
- 7:49jump ahead at the end of chapter 46 and read
- 7:53verse 28. because I noticed something interesting
- 7:56and I want to share it with you. Okay, so verse
- 8:0028 in the really the end the end of chapter 46
- 8:04is talking about Jacob being reunited with Joseph
- 8:06but verse 28 says he as in Jacob had sent Judah
- 8:10ahead of him to Joseph to show the way before
- 8:13him and they came into the land. Okay, so this
- 8:16is what I find interesting with connections.
- 8:19Is Jacob is Israel. We remember when God gave
- 8:22him a new name. So Israel sent Judah ahead to
- 8:25show the way, to lead the way, to make a way.
- 8:28Why I find this interesting is we've gone from
- 8:31Israel being the focus point of a people group
- 8:33in history to now also Judah leading the way
- 8:36and eventually being a kingdom. The kingdom that
- 8:39King David will reign in one day. All right,
- 8:43we are going to get back to the story again.
- 8:45Sorry for my additional side note. So later in
- 8:48the story, Jacob gets ready to die and blesses
- 8:50all his sons. In Judah's blessing, we will read
- 8:53it in chapter 49, verse 8 and 9. I've always
- 9:14wondered how those blessings work if it's more
- 9:16of like a prophetic prayer from a parent to a
- 9:19child or if it's spirit led or if they just you
- 9:23know had a book written down somewhere of what
- 9:25you say over each kid depending on how many children
- 9:27you have. But anyways I find his blessing very
- 9:30interesting um Because of what we see happening
- 9:33in the future with well, yeah, what we see happening
- 9:36in the future and what we see when we look back
- 9:38at history Alright, so I know this is a shorter
- 9:41one. Honestly, there wasn't a whole lot on Judah
- 9:43So let's do a quick recap. So who was Judah?
- 9:47He was the son of Jacob not the oldest and not
- 9:50the favored youngest He was married had sex with
- 9:53what he thought was a cult prostitute but turned
- 9:56out to be his daughter -in -law He was an unconventional
- 9:59leader whose people will one day be turned into
- 10:02a kingdom. If I would name his story, I would
- 10:05definitely call it the Unconventional Brother.
- 10:08I think we all have people in our life like Judah,
- 10:10where we look at them and think, hmm, that's
- 10:14an interesting choice. Or maybe we are those
- 10:17people. But the great thing about that is we
- 10:20learn that God loves not just to use, but loves
- 10:24to love those people and the choices that they
- 10:26make too. Alright, so we are going to take a
- 10:32minute and talk about Perez. Well, you know,
- 10:36while I have you here, there isn't much. His
- 10:39name means to breach and he is mentioned in Ruth
- 10:41chapter 4, 11 through 12. He's mentioned in Numbers
- 10:44and First Chronicles, Nehemiah and briefly in
- 10:48a few other books in the New Testament. All of
- 10:52them saying just about the same thing, which
- 10:53is he's the son of Judah and he's the father
- 10:56of another guy that comes around. and so on and
- 10:58so forth and part of the lineage of Jesus. What
- 11:01we did see in the brief insight of Prez's story
- 11:05was that he was also a twin. He wasn't meant
- 11:08to come out first, but he did because God had
- 11:11other plans. Some scholars say that this is a
- 11:14metaphor of Jesus coming and the first breakthrough
- 11:17of the kingdom of God. Anyways, that's just some
- 11:20food for thought for you. And that's quite literally
- 11:23all I have for you today. I hope you enjoyed
- 11:26this short snippet into the timeline of Jesus's
- 11:30lineage. We are going to jump into prayer. Hey,
- 11:33God, thank you so much for letting us study the
- 11:36timeline of your son's birth, the people who
- 11:39make up the history of what went into his DNA
- 11:41on his human side, and the history that goes
- 11:44into who we are, and how loving, forgiving you
- 11:47are, and how you find love and use for all of
- 11:51our stories that no one's too far gone. or too
- 11:55boring, or not doing enough, or doing too much.
- 11:58Because as you're using one brother to plan for
- 12:00the future through a famine, you are using the
- 12:04other brother to plan for the future for the
- 12:06world. I ask that we all find something out of
- 12:09this today that we can apply to our lives. And
- 12:11in your son's name, in Jesus' name, amen. Thanks
- 12:24so much for listening to the Living Freed podcast.
