- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 28th of
- 0:16May and it's good to have your company.
- 0:18Today is a wonderful day. This reading that we get to
- 0:22enjoy today is just an absolute Cracker Jack.
- 0:24Long before ChatGPT was the thing and somebody said I don't
- 0:28have time to read the whole Old Testament ChatGPT.
- 0:31Can you just summarise it for me in one chapter?
- 0:33That is what this is. As Stephen is dragged before the
- 0:37council and the high priests, they ask him to account for his
- 0:41faith and he tells them their own story.
- 0:45To say that my faith is your faith, you're numpties.
- 0:48Except he's good enough not to say you're numpties.
- 0:51I would have got myself in a lot of trouble way before I got to
- 0:53the end of this paragraph. That's why Stephen is there, and
- 0:55the Holy Spirit is inspiring him with these words captured by
- 0:59Luke for you and I to help us see the pedigree of our faith.
- 1:04And our story started long ago as God journeyed with his people
- 1:08through the Old Testament. You're ready, friends.
- 1:11Let us settle back for this wonderful synopsis as we hear
- 1:15his words captured in Acts 17. Then the high priest asked
- 1:30Stephen, are these accusations true?
- 1:34This was Stephen's reply. Brothers and fathers, listen to
- 1:38me. Our glorious God appeared to our
- 1:41ancestor Abraham in Mesopotamia before he settled in Haram.
- 1:46God told him, leave your native land and your relatives and come
- 1:50into the land. That I will show you.
- 1:53Sir, Abraham left the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haram
- 1:57until his father died. Then God brought him here, to
- 2:01the land where you now live. But God gave him no inheritance
- 2:04there, not even one square foot of land.
- 2:08God did promise, however, that eventually the whole land would
- 2:12belong to Abraham and his descendants, even though he had
- 2:15no children yet. God also told him that his
- 2:19descendants would live in a foreign land where they would be
- 2:22oppressed as slaves for 400 years.
- 2:25But I will punish the nation that enslaves them, God said,
- 2:29And in the end they will come out and worship me here in this
- 2:33place. God also gave Abraham the
- 2:36covenant of circumcision at that time.
- 2:39So when Abraham became the father of Isaac, he circumcised
- 2:42him on the 8th day. And the practise was continued
- 2:46when Isaac became the father of Jacob, and when Jacob became the
- 2:50father of the 12 patriarchs of the Israelite nation.
- 2:54These patriarchs were jealous of their brother Joseph, and they
- 2:58sold him to be a slave in Egypt. But God was with him and rescued
- 3:02him from all his troubles, and God gave him favour before
- 3:06Pharaoh, king of Egypt. God also gave Joseph unusual
- 3:10wisdom, so that Pharaoh appointed him governor over all
- 3:14of Egypt and put him in charge of the palace.
- 3:18But a famine came upon Egypt and Canaan.
- 3:21There was great misery, and our ancestors ran out of food.
- 3:25Jacob heard that there was still grain in Egypt, so he sent his
- 3:29sons, our ancestors, to buy some.
- 3:32The second time they went, Joseph revealed his identity to
- 3:36his brothers and they were introduced to Pharaoh.
- 3:39Then Joseph sent for his father Jacob and all his relatives to
- 3:43come to Egypt, 75 persons in all.
- 3:47Sir Jacob went to Egypt. He died there, as did our
- 3:51ancestors. Their bodies were taken to
- 3:53Shechem and buried in the tomb of Abraham and bought for a
- 3:57certain price from Hamor's sons in Shechem.
- 4:02As the time grew near when God would fulfil his promise to
- 4:05Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt greatly
- 4:08increased. But then a new king came to the
- 4:11throne of Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph.
- 4:14This king exploited our people and oppressed them, forcing
- 4:17parents to abandon their newborn babies so they would die.
- 4:22At that time, Moses was born a beautiful child in God's eyes.
- 4:26His parents cared for him at home for three months.
- 4:30When they had to abandon him, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him
- 4:33and raised him as her own son. Moses was taught all the wisdom
- 4:38of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in both speech and
- 4:42action. One day, when Moses was 40 years
- 4:46old, he decided to visit his relatives, the people of Israel.
- 4:50He saw an Egyptian mistreating an Israelite.
- 4:53So Moses came to the man's defence and avenged him, killing
- 4:57the Egyptian. Moses assumed his fellow
- 4:59Israelites would realise that God had sent him to rescue them,
- 5:03but they didn't. The next day he visited them
- 5:06again and saw two men of Israel fighting.
- 5:09He tried to be a peacemaker. Men, he said, you are brothers,
- 5:13why are you fighting each other? But the man in the wrong pushed
- 5:17Moses aside. Who made you a ruler and judge
- 5:21over us? He asked.
- 5:22Are you going to kill me as you killed that Egyptian yesterday?
- 5:26When Moses heard that, he fled the country and lived as a
- 5:30foreigner in the land of Midian, where his two sons were born. 40
- 5:35years later, in the desert near Mount Sinai, an Angel appeared
- 5:39to Moses in the flame of a burning Bush.
- 5:42When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight.
- 5:46As he went to take a closer look, the voice of the Lord
- 5:48called out to him. I am the God of your ancestors,
- 5:52the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- 5:56Moses shook with terror and did not dare to look.
- 6:00Then the Lord said to him, Take off your sandals, for you are
- 6:03standing on holy ground. I have certainly seen the
- 6:08oppression of my people in Egypt.
- 6:10I've heard their groans and have come down to rescue them.
- 6:14Now go, for I am sending you back to Egypt.
- 6:18So God sent back the same man his people had previously
- 6:22rejected when they demanded. Who made you a ruler and judge
- 6:25over us? Through the Angel who appeared
- 6:28to him in the burning Bush, God sent Moses to be their ruler and
- 6:33Saviour, and by means of many wonders and miraculous signs he
- 6:37led them out of Egypt, through the Red Sea and through the
- 6:41wilderness for 40 years. Moses himself told the people of
- 6:46Israel, God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among
- 6:50your own people. Moses was with our ancestors,
- 6:54the assembly of God's people in the wilderness when the Angel
- 6:58spoke to him at Mount Sinai. And there Moses received life
- 7:02giving words to pass on to us. But our ancestors refused to
- 7:07listen to Moses. They rejected him and wanted to
- 7:10return to Egypt. They told Aaron, make us some
- 7:13gods who can lead us, for we don't know what has become of
- 7:16this Moses who brought us out of Egypt.
- 7:19So they made an idol shaped like a calf, and they sacrificed to
- 7:24it and celebrated over this thing they had made.
- 7:27Then God turned away from them and abandoned them to serve the
- 7:32stars of heaven as their gods. In the book of the Prophet it is
- 7:37written. Was it to me you were bringing
- 7:40sacrifices and offerings during those 40 years in the
- 7:43wilderness? Israel.
- 7:45No, you carried your Pagan gods, the shrine of Molech, the star
- 7:50of your God Rafan, and the images you made to worship them.
- 7:54So I will send you into exile as far away as Babylon.
- 8:00Our ancestors carried the Tabernacle with them through the
- 8:03wilderness. It was constructed according to
- 8:06the plan God had shown to Moses. Years later, when Joshua LED our
- 8:10ancestors in battle against the nations that God drove out of
- 8:13this land, the Tabernacle was taken with them into their new
- 8:18territory, and it stayed there until the time of King David.
- 8:23David found favour with God and asked for the privilege of
- 8:26building a permanent temple for the God of Jacob, but it was
- 8:30Solomon who actually built it. However, the Most High doesn't
- 8:34live in temples made by human hands.
- 8:36As the prophet says, Heaven is my throne and earth is my
- 8:41footstool. Could you build me a temple as
- 8:44good as that? Asked the Lord.
- 8:46Could you build me such a resting place?
- 8:49Didn't my hands make both heaven and earth?
- 8:53You stubborn people, you are heathen at heart and deaf to the
- 8:58truth. Must you forever resist the Holy
- 9:00Spirit? That's what your ancestors did,
- 9:03and so do you. Name one prophet your ancestors
- 9:07didn't persecute. They even killed the ones who
- 9:10predicted the coming of the righteous. 1 The Messiah whom
- 9:14you betrayed and murdered. You deliberately disobeyed God's
- 9:18law, even though you received it from the hands of angels.
- 9:23The Jewish leaders were infuriated by Stephen's
- 9:27accusation, and they shook their fists at him in rage.
- 9:31But Stephen Fall of the Holy Spirit gazed steadily into
- 9:36heaven and saw the glory of God. And he saw Jesus standing at the
- 9:41place of honour at God's right hand.
- 9:44And he told them, Look, I see the heavens open, and the Son of
- 9:50Man standing in the place of honour at God's right hand.
- 9:55Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting.
- 9:58They rushed at him and dragged him out of the city and began to
- 10:01stone him. His accusers took off their
- 10:04coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.
- 10:09As they stoned him, Stephen prayed, Lord Jesus, receive my
- 10:14spirit. He fell to his knees, shouting,
- 10:18Lord, don't charge them with this sin.
- 10:22And with that, he died. Lord, I wonder if there in our
- 10:39lives are any parts of Your truth and Your story that we're
- 10:43not willing to hear. Just like the Pharisees and the
- 10:46teachers of the law covered their ears and shouted at
- 10:49Stephen to stop. It is so possible, in fact
- 10:52probable, that there are parts of our lives that You wish to
- 10:55highlight to us that we are not ready to hear, that we cover our
- 11:01ears from You and won't listen. Our Holy Spirit, I pray that you
- 11:06flow through US and convict us of Your truth, Convict us of
- 11:12your ways so that we can truly have our whole lives inside and
- 11:17out in service to You. And that if there are some dodgy
- 11:23corners of our lives and our hearts, that your Spirit would
- 11:28flood them, washing them clean, so that we can come to your
- 11:33renewed willing to be a living sacrifice in our totality for
- 11:38you and your Kingdom. And thank you that you receive
- 11:43us, broken and incomplete as we are, and you love us
- 11:47nonetheless. So we just praise you Jesus, and
- 11:51pray all of this in your name, Amen.
