- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, welcome to this episode of the Daily Writer Podcast.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Today's episode is the first in a seven-part series on dealing with rejection.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: As writers, we deal with rejection in a lot of different forms.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: You can be rejected by a reader, a publisher, a literary agent, a podcaster, a beta reader, a book reviewer, a peer, and so many other ways to be rejected.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: And this rejection can be formal or it can be informal.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: It can be big or it can be small.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: It can be direct and aggressive, or it can also be indirect and passive.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Whatever form rejection takes, one thing is for certain, it hurts.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: And when it happens, when you feel rejected, we always ask the inevitable questions like these.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Why don't they like my writing?
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Have I done something wrong?
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Why do they have to be so mean?
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: How can I move forward now when I feel so hurt and criticized?
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: What does everybody else think?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Are they just as displeased as this one critic or this one person who rejected me?
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Well, of course, these are normal questions, but when you feel rejected, make sure and ask the most important question of all.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And that is this where is the seed of truth in that person's rejection?
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Most of the time, in most cases, there's a kernel of truth in somebody's rejection or criticism.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: The person who hurt your feelings, they might be over the top or maybe they went too far, but oftentimes there is a little bit of truth in every rejection or criticism.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: So look for that kernel of truth.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Even if the criticism or rejection is delivered in a hurtful way, it doesn't mean that the person was wrong.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: It just means that they were wrong in their delivery of what they said.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: So we have to separate the message from how it was delivered.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: So with as much humility as you can possibly muster, and I know this is really difficult, stop and check in with yourself for a minute and see if there's any truth in what that person said, and then adjust accordingly.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: You and your writing will be all the better for it.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Think of the most recent time you've been rejected or criticized.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: And was there any truth to it?
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
