- 0:06The Top 10 Christmas party rules Welcome to this episode where
- 0:11there's going to be poems, elves, neighbors, pop music and
- 0:16well, everything. It's Christmas Mark and Pete, 2
- 0:20blokes with half an opinion. It's the top 10 Christmas party
- 0:25rules. The first rule of a good
- 0:28Christmas party. Wear a silly jumper and be merry
- 0:32and hearty. Now the second rule is to forget
- 0:36every single rule and behave like a jingling jester or
- 0:40festive fool. The third rule is bringing a
- 0:45real snowman to the door, which will create much laughter as it
- 0:49melts on the floor. The fourth rule is to look
- 0:53around to find three wise men and if all fails, then find
- 0:59women instead and go round again and.
- 1:02The fifth rule should be to seek out figurines of Joseph and
- 1:07Mary, then climb up the Christmas tree and look down on
- 1:11them as a fairy. The sixth rule is to sing carols
- 1:16loudly and completely out of tune and dance around all the
- 1:21guests madly like a manic baboon.
- 1:24The seventh rule is to grab a large bucket and eat all the
- 1:29food and get drunk on the punch and just punch anyone who's a
- 1:33prude. The eighth rule is to give
- 1:37yourself a timely, light hearted lift by rummaging through
- 1:41wrapping paper, opening everyone's gift.
- 1:45The ninth rule is to take photos of those with airs and graces
- 1:50and make stupid gestures and customary ridiculous faces.
- 1:56The final rule by the evening's end is to recall why you got
- 2:01overexcited, as the grimacing party host explains that.
- 2:06You were never invited. Indeed.
- 2:12Well, there we are. You see, Christmas.
- 2:14Well, what a fun time. It is a fun time I say, but also
- 2:18a very expensive time. Now turkeys and sprouts are
- 2:22synonymous with Christmas dinner but my goodness, the rising
- 2:25prices are meaning that there is more mean offerings on the
- 2:30plate. Did you see Mr. Pete, that it
- 2:33seems that the typical Turkey dinner with all the trimmings
- 2:36will cost about £32.45 according to the research done by, yes
- 2:42some of the media and the research firms.
- 2:44Well this is getting very expensive and one of the reasons
- 2:47is the fact that turkeys suffer from bird flu.
- 2:50What say you about the cost of Christmas?
- 2:53Yes, the well, Christmas is a time when you eat lots of food
- 2:58and food, food prices already are high.
- 3:02And then with the markups for Christmas and specific foods
- 3:05being required, which means they can get marked up again, it's of
- 3:08course gets very, very expensive.
- 3:10And if you insist on eating a Turkey, then of course there's a
- 3:13markup on that, even though it's a particularly dry and
- 3:17unpleasant bird. They're talking about the
- 3:20Turkey, not anyone. Oh, right, yes.
- 3:22Not a family member. And so, yeah, it's, it's
- 3:24getting, Christmas is getting very expensive.
- 3:27And you could be forgiven thinking, you know what, what
- 3:30are we doing all this for? But of course it's Christmas,
- 3:33you know, somehow that makes it all right, spending it, spending
- 3:37loads and loads of money, ending up in debt by the end of the
- 3:40year. Somehow we all do it anyway.
- 3:43Well, not end up in debt necessarily, but spend loads of
- 3:46money. And what I, what I worry about
- 3:49though, Mark, is how the, you know, you know, the tradition of
- 3:52having elves. And we over in the UK inherited
- 3:56the tradition from the US of having an elf on the shelf.
- 4:00I don't mean those, I mean the real elves that make all the
- 4:03toys in Lapland for for Father Christmas.
- 4:07I mean surely they must be struggling with the
- 4:11infrastructure there. Of course, meaning that the cost
- 4:14of living is very expensive for elves.
- 4:16Well, the cost. Of they might be going on strike
- 4:18this year. Well, they could be going on
- 4:20strike, but here we go, you see, Because of course, obviously our
- 4:23our glorious little children will all want to go rummaging
- 4:26through grottoes to see Father Christmas and to see the elves.
- 4:30But look, guess what? Yes.
- 4:32I'm afraid that we have to look at what does it cost to have a
- 4:36Father Christmas. Now, Mr. Pete, the hourly rate,
- 4:40I will say is somewhat contentious.
- 4:43So the per hour rate for a Father Christmas is how much in
- 4:49your opinion? Well, as a pay range.
- 4:51Now a typical, say tutor. For for per.
- 4:55Hour that's one of my children would be £30 an hour, so I'm
- 4:58going to go for £30 an hour. I mean I.
- 4:59Think. Well, I'm afraid it's only 1515
- 5:03as the. Same as.
- 5:04The last Christmas. Yes, last Christmas I gave you.
- 5:08My heart not very nice day. Yeah, I mean, it's not not that
- 5:12much above the the the I was going to say the living wage,
- 5:16the what is the word? I'm scraping for the it's not,
- 5:22not, not not very much money above the minimum wage.
- 5:24That's what it was, correct. So yeah, I will for the
- 5:29Christmases be going on strike. I don't know.
- 5:31I don't know. But what about the elves?
- 5:33The elves. Now, you see, the elves are to
- 5:36usher the children through to the grotto.
- 5:37Yeah. What are they going to
- 5:38Christmas? Being the one that they can't
- 5:40see now according to the income data research as the IDR which
- 5:44compiles the data, as you know said elf earning there is a
- 5:50range here and how much they elves are typically paid this
- 5:56year. How much do you think that would
- 5:58be? Well, I'm going to say it's
- 6:00obviously they're not the stars, so I'm going to say it's going
- 6:04to be £12.75 to £13.25. Well actually you were very
- 6:11close, but they would probably prefer your figure because it's
- 6:14£12.48 on average. Compared to is that minimum wage
- 6:18I. Thought that was.
- 6:19Well, that's the. Low.
- 6:20Yeah, I know. This is.
- 6:21I love controversy, folks. Oh, right, yes.
- 6:25Yeah, yes. I mean, I must admit that when
- 6:27you think about the cost of Christmas, it does make you
- 6:30wonder and and it makes you wonder for all those elves who
- 6:33are thinking of building out their career in Lapland and many
- 6:36other. Places Well, of course there are
- 6:38two types of elves. We well, three types of elves.
- 6:40We, we'll be talking about the little models of elves who
- 6:44dotted around the house. There's the elves who actually
- 6:47work in the mines in Lapland. And then there's the people in
- 6:50various shopping centres, etcetera, who introduce children
- 6:53to Christmas, to Father Christmas at different,
- 6:56different pay rates I, I imagine, and different levels of
- 6:59reality for each. But you know those, those are
- 7:02the sort of elves that introduces the children to
- 7:05Christmas. I've actually done that to
- 7:06Father Christmas. I've done that job myself, yes,
- 7:10and. All the children are still
- 7:12having therapy. Well, I just just did it for
- 7:15tips. No, I just did it.
- 7:16I just did it as a volunteer. But you know, I wasn't a
- 7:18professional elf, so. Yeah, OK.
- 7:22Well, there you go. Yeah.
- 7:24Well, I went. Yeah, yeah, go ahead.
- 7:26Yeah. Well, I, when you look out of
- 7:28your, your window, your igloo or whatever it is that you're
- 7:33looking out of, you tend to sort of notice that the, the streets
- 7:37are lit up. And what's incredible is, is
- 7:39that the, some people are prepared to spend a staggering
- 7:42amount of money on energy bills. Now here's one such 1A family
- 7:47has racked up 4000 lbs of energy bills simply to light up their
- 7:52house. Now here's the thing.
- 7:54There is a little twist and the Molyneux family who have decided
- 8:00to do this are doing it because it's for charity and it's
- 8:03basically for a Wigan Infirmary. That's a good cause, but
- 8:07nevertheless it is remarkable, isn't it, how some of our
- 8:11streets are adorned with, you know, inflatable Santas, pop up
- 8:15reindeers and strange sagging elves.
- 8:18But the here's the thing, There is no law in the United Kingdom,
- 8:23and possibly anywhere else for that matter.
- 8:25This specifies when Christmas lights must be turned off.
- 8:28My question to you, Mr. Pete, is, do you think that this is a
- 8:31good thing or maybe there should be a law saying when you have to
- 8:36just simply switch off? Well.
- 8:39Here, I, I take the view that there are, are existing laws and
- 8:43I always, always think that you should just enforce existing
- 8:47laws if a light is causing a nuisance.
- 8:51There aren't. I mean, I, I, I, I'm talking
- 8:53about by laws, of course. So not talking like national
- 8:57laws, but in areas where each of the areas where I've lived,
- 9:01there have been laws about where where you can have lights.
- 9:05If someone has a light, for example, pointing into your home
- 9:08so it's causing a nuisance, you could have have them redirected.
- 9:12If there are aren't enough lights, you can have it changed
- 9:15by each, in each case by talking to the council.
- 9:19And so I think there are existing laws about it.
- 9:22So I don't think you need a special law saying Christmas
- 9:25lights need to be turned off at a certain time.
- 9:28I think that you can make an application based on whether
- 9:32they are actually intrusive to you because Christmas lights, we
- 9:37are part of Christmas. I you want them there.
- 9:40You just don't want to ask if you're awake at night.
- 9:42I mean, if, what if we didn't have them?
- 9:45How drew would that be in the building to Christmas?
- 9:47You want to see people lighting up the houses in the most
- 9:51tasteless ways possible. I mean, the fact that they're
- 9:55tasteless makes them. It's one of those paradoxes.
- 9:57I think the fact is if they're extremely tasteless, then
- 10:01they're actually tasteful at Christmas.
- 10:03Think about it. So I don't think you want a law
- 10:05when they should be turned off. Just simply stick to current
- 10:08regulations about whether you're intruding on someone else's
- 10:12space. Yes.
- 10:13Well, what I was quite remarkable.
- 10:15So if you are thinking of going for it, some lights are more
- 10:18disruptive than others. Yes, remarkably, sleep
- 10:22specialist this is Doctor Nerina Ramplakan says that flashing
- 10:26bright lights or blue toned lights are particularly
- 10:30problematic and this is because the wavelengths trigger
- 10:33photoreceptors in the eyes that suppress melatonin and shift
- 10:39sleep wake cycles. So I know that it wouldn't
- 10:43really affect you because you're dancing around all night like a
- 10:46manic baboon as I've. Yes, earlier, but yeah, that is
- 10:49interesting. I'm familiar with that because
- 10:51you can. I don't, I don't have one at the
- 10:53moment, but in one place that I rented, there was a night light
- 10:57that was red and so it kind of was red.
- 10:59So you didn't you you could wander around in in the night,
- 11:03blundering around trying to find the toilet and you didn't
- 11:05properly wake up. But if you then went into the
- 11:08bathroom area and turned on the blue tinged fluorescent light
- 11:15when you wake up. So it is interesting.
- 11:17I mean, they just are naturally seem slightly blue the the the
- 11:22fluorescent lights. So that's bluer than say the
- 11:27sunlight. Sunlight is almost pure white.
- 11:29So you you're you're affected by it.
- 11:32I've noticed that, Yeah. So I mean, but surely Christmas
- 11:36lights are are are red and and? Green, you could.
- 11:40It could be embarrassing. Why would they be blown?
- 11:43Well, because probably when you stumbled around in the dark and
- 11:46you've woken up in the neighbors bedroom.
- 11:49The lot. At least that's my case.
- 11:51Now of course there is another point about Christmas which can
- 11:55be slightly annoying and maybe I can highlight it by the
- 11:59principle of craving for a silent night.
- 12:03Yes, singing along to a Christmas single can make you
- 12:07feel festive and glad. Moving to music and maybe mingle
- 12:10where dancing gets quite bad with folk.
- 12:13Jiving to every Jingle where some sounds are just a fad, but
- 12:18though it causes ears to tingle, they all simply drive you mad.
- 12:24Yes, well, we come to that festive period where of course
- 12:27it's the chart topping Christmas single.
- 12:30And this year Mr. Pete, yes, your heroine Kylie Minogue has
- 12:35finally got there. Yes, yes, after 37 years of her
- 12:39first UK number one hit, which was of course I should be so
- 12:41lucky. But not for everybody else.
- 12:44This time she's hit the top of the charts with Xmas.
- 12:48I know it's one of your favourites, isn't it?
- 12:50Yes, Yeah. Well, I mean, XM is I I Well,
- 12:53you see, I'm a fan of clever word play.
- 12:57And I don't know whether you noticed this, Mr. Mahl, but Xmas
- 13:01spells Xmas, which means Christmas.
- 13:04So did you notice that? That's very, very clever.
- 13:07I don't. Now, I know over the years
- 13:09people have spoken to me about how irritating they find it when
- 13:13people use Xmas instead of Christmas.
- 13:16But I looked into this. The original use of Xmas meant
- 13:24Christmas, but they would use the chi symbol, the the Greek
- 13:30letter, which which is the shape of an X, you see.
- 13:34So that's, that's where it sort of came from.
- 13:36I mean, some people thought said to me, well, it's because it
- 13:39looks like a cross, but it's not quite right for a cross, is it?
- 13:42It's like a cross is tiptoe. I think I I believe more the the
- 13:45Kai idea. Yeah.
- 13:49So it looks like. Yeah.
- 13:50Well, that's interesting because.
- 13:52If she. Using a Kylie Minogue using X
- 13:54was it's actually Kai Mas. Yes, exactly.
- 13:58It's such brilliant word play. I think it's amazing.
- 14:02I'm, I'm, I'm starting it now. Campaign Kylie Minogue for Poet
- 14:07Laureate. Well, absolutely.
- 14:10Now what? For those of you who of course
- 14:12have bought the song, I'm sure that you're all dancing to the
- 14:15tune and of course making the gestures as well, because you
- 14:18have to make the X, the M, the A and the S.
- 14:20This irrepressibly jaunty anthem actually is a tell does tell a
- 14:24story. Remarkably, which is.
- 14:26The the presents the presents under the tree and kissing
- 14:31someone special out in the snow. That's the purpose of the song.
- 14:35That's that's quite a narrative. Now, I know that as we sort of
- 14:40sort of draw towards the clothes as we think about Christmas, but
- 14:44Mr. Pete, I must ask you an obvious question.
- 14:47What on earth is the real meaning of Christmas?
- 14:51That God in human form came to rescue us.
- 14:55So it's good news. Merry Christmas everyone.
- 14:59And here is a simple but final thought when you think of the
- 15:03magic of Christmas. Believing in the magic of
- 15:07Christmas Day means being under its spell for joy to appear,
- 15:12where the gift of peace and hope Jingle all the way.
- 15:16Then it vanishes for the rest of the year.
