- 0:07The Oakland A's faced the Cincinnati Reds at Riverfront Stadium for Game 6 of the 1972 World Series on October 21st.
- 0:16The A's led the best of seven series three games to two.
- 0:19And this is the NBC Radio broadcast of Game 6 featuring announcers Jim Simpson and Monty Moore.
- 0:25With yet to get a hit, nevertheless, there's one five-time to score three runs on the second base batting record.
- 0:31Bobby Coles, who has four RBI's in the last two games he's been with Big Man, is in center field.
- 0:38Johnny Bench, an age of including home run hitter and RBI man, has not had either in his World Series.
- 0:45He's had four since he's behind the plate.
- 0:48Tony Perez, again with no RBI's but a 444 average with a hit from both in his World Series past six.
- 0:57As F. Stephen Bando has not driven in runs for Oakland or the Cincinnati Reds, the number four five-time
- 1:04has mentioned to us also has driven in no runs.
- 1:07Kyle McWay, because of the left hander by the blue, will be out in right field with us.
- 1:11Tanner Planky, who has had a superb series of deals, is at third base.
- 1:16And he's been touchy on it.
- 1:18It's a shortstop today, right-handed all the way, a reason they're close because of my experience.
- 1:22And Gary Nolan, who is making still another start in the World Series, his fourth, he is going to,
- 1:29and he lost the first game of this 1972 World Series, it's a 50.
- 1:33We were 15 and five on the year.
- 1:35The color guard of the greens is just behind home plate.
- 1:38The University of Cincinnati band is ready to play as we rise the river from stadium
- 1:44to stadium, but I have to learn from them.
- 2:44Many a wave, by the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
- 3:06Bobby Overcast dances lame this afternoon, chances are he's in the 50s.
- 3:14The University of Cincinnati marching band is preparing to leave the field,
- 3:17and we'll continue with our pregame highlights right after this message.
- 3:21It snapped all the way back and cut off more of it.
- 3:25Now, of course, no one-blade rager made by anybody can save you like that.
- 3:31The track to you, direct net it one-blade better.
- 3:38We'll remind you again that here at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati,
- 3:41the field is almost completely carpeted.
- 3:43There's dirt only around home plate in the picture now, and first, second, and third.
- 3:47There is not what they call the skin of the infield, dirt running from first two thirds,
- 3:52just little patches of dirt.
- 3:53And the ball?
- 3:55Well, it really carries in Riverfront Stadium, and you will find that the infielders
- 3:58and Molly will be talking about that a lot in the early drawing play very deep,
- 4:02almost short right field, almost short left field.
- 4:05It's a different ballgame here at Riverfront Stadium.
- 4:08The umpire today, Bill Haller of the American League, will be behind the play.
- 4:11Chris Telekubis, who called balls and strikes in the first game of the series,
- 4:14has worked his way back to first base.
- 4:16Jim Honokic is the second base, Meryl Stanner is third.
- 4:19Down the left field line, American League umpire Frank Eamon and Bob Engel in the first world series,
- 4:24while balls and strikes yesterday will be down the right field line.
- 4:28Again, Gary Nolan, the right-hander to start, with Sparky Anderson,
- 4:31ready to go with nearly everybody necessary, as he proved yesterday by going with nearly everybody,
- 4:37starting with McLaughlin going to Bourbon, Tom Hall, Craig Carroll,
- 4:41Ralph Grimsley, and finally Jack Billingham.
- 4:45And today he'll do anything.
- 4:46Turn it around to the other side of the field, and in the other dugout, the open base,
- 4:50Dick Wooden's expected about 10-0 swim and talk the center down in the bullpen.
- 4:54Use rally fingers only if absolutely necessary.
- 4:57Things have been in the first half game, but Wooden and the A's would like to wind it up today.
- 5:03Nolan, during the regular season 15-5, started the first game of this series,
- 5:07but the Lusher giving up three runs, all of them scoring on the three long runs by Dean Hennett.
- 5:13In the playoffs, he started the third game of the playoffs,
- 5:16and gave up one run and picked in in six against Pittsburgh, and was not a picture-of- record there.
- 5:22Nolan opened the 1970 World Series, and home runs again were his problem.
- 5:27He surrendered them to Boog Pall, Ellie Hendricks, and Butch Robinson of Baltimore, and lost that one.
- 5:32So this is his fourth World Series strike, and he is going to.
- 5:36The Cincinnati Reds have not won a home game in the World Series in 32 years.
- 5:43They will try today. The Reds' first, Morgan's second, the 50-0 short,
- 5:47Mecchi is third, Rosen left, Nolan in center, McRae in right,
- 5:50Mecchi is second, Nolan is warming up,
- 5:52Morbid-Eras is preparing to step in, and we call 10 seconds for St. John the Agate of the Gates.
- 5:57It's 10 AM. This is KZW Park.
- 6:00And now with Bonnie Moore, this is Jim Simpson back at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati.
- 6:14This is game six for the World Series.
- 6:16Oakland can close it out today. They lead three games to two.
- 6:20Kapanera steps in, and here's the voice of the Oakland Athletics, Bonnie Moore.
- 6:24Thank you very much, Jim Simpson, and hi, what's it all, everybody.
- 6:27Matthew Kapanera, who has not had a good series with a bat, steps in.
- 6:32And he started off the series as if he were going to tear the Cincinnati Picking the Party
- 6:36at two hits off Nolan in the first game here in Cincinnati.
- 6:40He has only had one hit since that time, three hits and 20 at bats for the age-leadoff man.
- 6:45Valorant defense tightens up on the corner, the third and first,
- 6:48and here's the first pitch of the ball again.
- 6:50Kapanera swings and doesn't get a strike one.
- 6:53Aaron Nolan, a 15-game winner, he lost only five, and he's earned on average a super 1.99,
- 7:00which means he has allowed less than two runs every nine innings he's pitched this year.
- 7:04One strike puts the Kapanera to the curve ball, back down to the third base,
- 7:08and Minky backs up to take it, throws over the third for the up.
- 7:13Dennis Minky, the right-hander of picking, has been one of the young-time heroes for Cincinnati in this series.
- 7:18He has not mishandled the ball.
- 7:20He has just been outstanding, playing shallow against a lot of the age-ladders and having to choose some hard line drives.
- 7:26That time, Kapanera bounced one down off their artificial turf, which usually bounces over a man's head.
- 7:31Minky is a big guy, sixth one, and just back there, casually took it and threw him out.
- 7:36Get out, Matty Alou.
- 7:38Foul away, strike one. Matty has had only one hit in the World Series and 17 at bats.
- 7:44Here's the value of the 3.18 in the National League this year for the Stingler Cardinals,
- 7:48stated over to the Oakland A's, the last loss of the season, and he hit 2.81 for Oakland.
- 7:57No one's pitch on the way.
- 7:59Foul back here, it's by 2.
- 8:01Matty Alou, a little guy, left-handed batter.
- 8:10He became an outstanding percentage hitter when he quit trying to hit the ball out of the ballpark.
- 8:15He hits it to all fields now, Prince and Addie.
- 8:18Blaze M shaded over towards left.
- 8:21Gary Nolan, a strike towards the head of Alou at 0-2.
- 8:25Joe Rudy will back there for open here in the first inning.
- 8:29Nolan shakes off then, now comes to the break of the fast ball and it's bounced to the second baseman.
- 8:35Morgan backs up to take it, raised the first, he got him by a slide and there are two down.
- 8:40And the red-ticking staff contenders the battle, Matty Alou.
- 8:44Here is Joe Rudy.
- 8:46He was quite a hero in game number two last Sunday here in the ballpark.
- 8:51He landed a home run into the imagining section of the left field area
- 8:55and he took the ball off the wall in left field that probably saved the day.
- 9:00Joe Rudy, over 300 average for the A's through the season.
- 9:05He hit 19 home runs for Oakland, that's where he runs battered in.
- 9:10Right-handed batter, very strong hitter.
- 9:13Nolan, six-turn, a four-and-a-half into the air and a deep right field.
- 9:17Tony, our helmet player, is under the ball, he's got it, and he's three down.
- 9:22After the first half-in, the coach will never end his second inning coming to bat.
- 9:27Hi, this is Joe Garagio.
- 9:30Well, it's World Series time and even people who aren't real fans
- 9:34start taking an interest in baseball.
- 9:36And that's because you're seeing the best.
- 9:38And when you see the best of anything, you've got to admire it.
- 9:41Like the new Dodge Charger.
- 9:43For the last few years, people have looked at Charger for the newest,
- 9:47the latest in automobile styling.
- 9:49And once again, in 1973, Charger hasn't disappointed them.
- 9:54Charger has the clean, smooth lines that you've come to expect.
- 9:57But this year, Charger has more.
- 10:00Charger has an electronic ignition system for sure to start.
- 10:04Charger has Carson Quiet Ride to help keep out those annoying road noises.
- 10:09And Charger tops it all off by giving you a choice of three vinyl roof styles.
- 10:14That's right.
- 10:15There's a canopy vinyl roof, a halo vinyl roof,
- 10:18and a distinctive Charger SE vinyl roof.
- 10:21So if you want to see one of the best cars with plenty of family-size room,
- 10:25see Dodge Charger at your nearby Dodge dealer.
- 10:32Water blue.
- 10:33The video is one up from an ironing interface.
- 10:35Rose Morgan in tone.
- 10:37Rose will clean it off.
- 10:39He let off yesterday in the first pitch for a home run and one up on the day,
- 10:42three for five.
- 10:43This is all hard, all five times.
- 10:45And Groban, he's going to be the winning run again tonight.
- 10:48Here again is Morgan.
- 10:50Rose has been kept off the bases very well by the age-picking staff until yesterday.
- 10:54And as Jim said, he's changed that in a hurry on the very first pitch thrown by Patrick Hunter.
- 11:00He was batting left-handed that time.
- 11:02He has now turned around to bat right against Rhino Blue.
- 11:06He's not only 16 years old from this year,
- 11:08he was invaluable in the playoffs out of the bullpen.
- 11:11Here's his first pitch, and Rose looks at a curve as a hit in football one.
- 11:16Home plate umpire is American Lakers' Bill Howard,
- 11:20looking at first World Series game.
- 11:24Blue's one-all pitch.
- 11:25Fast strike, fifth call, one-on-one.
- 11:28Big rolls followed by Morgan in tone.
- 11:31Rose got out of a deep cross either side of the plate.
- 11:35In the high-bouncing ball of short, Campanier has to get off the herd again.
- 11:38And they go to third.
- 11:39Jim finally got him with a great throw from deep short drop.
- 11:43Any time that ball bounces twice on this serve,
- 11:45you think Rose has a chance to beat it.
- 11:47But Campanier has a gun for an arm and shot him down.
- 11:50There's one away.
- 11:54Here's little Joe Morgan,
- 11:56who though has not had a hit in this season,
- 11:58certainly was a big factor yesterday in 15-oddies.
- 12:02Victory because he walked twice and scored two runs.
- 12:06Morgan for the year, led the majors and walked, getting 115.
- 12:12Blue's sixth turn is high over all one.
- 12:17Morgan was a big little second baseman this year.
- 12:20At the plate, he was up 562 pounds officially.
- 12:25There's a drive through right center field.
- 12:28He's really sort of charging up and having a lead on the run.
- 12:30It's going to be off the fence.
- 12:32He's in the ball with Angel Mangual.
- 12:34Morgan is going to start the second with a double.
- 12:37Now he's on his way to third, and he's going to make it up away.
- 12:40He's going to drive better than he's ever picked before.
- 12:43He's too late.
- 12:46The relay throw from Angel Mangual in right center field, back to the infield.
- 12:51Got away from both the green and catcher camp in here.
- 12:55Now, the third baseman had to go recover to go and follow in Joe Morgan.
- 13:00He's leading the third.
- 13:02He's a little bit of an error on somebody.
- 13:09Goal away, gentlemen.
- 13:21Lighter blue ended up covering third, taking an underhanded toss from Kyle Handoff.
- 13:25As Morgan has gone back to second base.
- 13:28Well, the ball went away from green and catcher there.
- 13:31Here is on the center fielder, Angel Mangual, for the throw.
- 13:35It was just the end of the game today, replacing George Henry.
- 13:40Here's Lottie Solon.
- 13:43He has had some good base hits.
- 13:47The agent field playing fast.
- 13:49Here's lighter blue's blindness, the first swing, and I missed back one in blue.
- 13:53Threw that ball perfectly that time.
- 13:55A blazing fastball on the knee to the inside part of the plate.
- 14:02Solon has had five hits in the World Series, but he's knocked in four runs.
- 14:07All he has to do to knock in a run here is hit the ball on the ground to either short or second there, both going very deep.
- 14:17Lighter blue needs a strikeout.
- 14:20Morgan, now third.
- 14:22Here's the line and the pitch.
- 14:23Good ball.
- 14:24Bounce to the right, grab the infield, but it goes foul.
- 14:27No balls and two strikes.
- 14:29The second-first World Series base hit was a blast off the right center field wall.
- 14:38Certainly one of the Major League's most exciting players.
- 14:46Now two strikes on the batter, Kampi Kampanaris, who is short-stuck.
- 15:00Very, very fine play by Kampanaris.
- 15:06Solon will keep right on the fifth by a lighter blue fastball.
- 15:10In the air over Sal Benvall with fine foul and Kampanaris, even with a left-handed batter up and playing deep, managed to get over there with a great first of feet and backhand the ball right behind third.
- 15:22Now here's Johnny Vance.
- 15:26Vance in the series has five hits.
- 15:32Here's the fifth.
- 15:41Kampanaris, the Oakland shortstop, is playing a good 40 feet behind the baseline between second and third.
- 15:47And a very deep at third.
- 15:49The pitch to Vance.
- 15:50There's a drive deep left field.
- 15:51That ball is really hit.
- 15:52Really on the run.
- 15:53Going for it.
- 15:54Backhanded on the drive.
- 15:55Right at the wall in foul territory.
- 15:59Joel Rudy caught that ball. I believe he caught it in third round, but he went into the wall and is in foul territory down the left field line in the Red Sea Outdoor.
- 16:08One hit and one error and a man last after having a play.
- 16:11It is nothing and nothing.
- 16:15This is Milo Hamilton.
- 16:16I call the play-by-play for the Atlanta Braves and I do the radio commercials for Delta, the official A-line of the Braves.
- 16:23When I talk about Delta, well, I speak from experience.
- 16:26Last month I flew more than 16,000 miles on Delta.
- 16:29It was a rugged schedule, but the Delta people made it as smooth as anyone could ask for.
- 16:34Delta is an airline run by professionals.
- 16:3624,000 professionals.
- 16:38Each highly skilled individual knows his job and gives it his best.
- 16:42That goes for the reservationist who confirms your space by delta-matic computer in three seconds.
- 16:47Right onto the baggage handler who delivers your bags in an average time of seven minutes after you land.
- 16:53It's what Delta calls total service.
- 16:56I'd like to recommend Delta Airlines to you.
- 16:59And I have one other suggestion for people who travel, the American Express Money Card.
- 17:04You can even extend payment for your Delta tickets on the sign and fly plan.
- 17:08You're always ready to go with an American Express Money Card.
- 17:12And Delta is ready when you are.
- 17:15In central is Lonnie Moore. We go to the second. In the first, Nolan got him one, two, three.
- 17:23In the Cincinnati first, thanks to fine fielding plays by Kampenaris, two of them.
- 17:27And the running catch of the line drive off the bat of Johnny Bentsch, who pulled a wide of roof pitch down the left of your line, blew.
- 17:33And the A's got out of trouble. In trouble because Morgan Last to double off the wall and Wright.
- 17:37And once the third on Mandrell's throwing errors. So up to nothing, nothing ballgames.
- 17:40We go to the second. Here again is Mike.
- 17:43And the third is Ed Sheen. A swing up hitting first baseman.
- 17:47Minutes to play 12 times in the World Series without a base hit.
- 17:50He was Oakland's leading home run hitter for the year with 26.
- 17:53The pitch from Nolan is low. Ball one.
- 17:56Ed Sheen had 26 homers, 70 runs batted in, and a very good average for him, 270.
- 18:08Nolan's pitch on the way. Ed Sheen looks at a fast ball right down the middle.
- 18:12He doesn't throw all that many home runs, but the A's tagging for two in the first game he fits.
- 18:20Outstanding change that Nolan has. Here's the pitch.
- 18:23Curve and it's distributed. All come up to that game.
- 18:27Nolan spun that ball right over the top, and it was diving down through that strike zone.
- 18:32Ed Sheen finds himself behind out of all of the strikes.
- 18:39Reds defense deep and around to the right. Here's the pitch.
- 18:43It's low. Two balls, two strikes.
- 18:47The Reds have been generating excitement in the early innings in the last couple of three games.
- 18:52Though they haven't scored that much earlier, they have definitely had the chances.
- 18:572-2 pitch, Ed Sheen, and he swings and misses.
- 19:02Warring Nolan. Right-back Ed Sheen, one out in a second, and here is Sal Gondor.
- 19:14Gondor, the ladies team captain, has 15 home runs for the season,
- 19:17knocking 77 runs to lead the A's in that department,
- 19:20but his batting average fell off to a majorly low for him of 236.
- 19:25Fast ball, cut ball.
- 19:27Gondor in the World Series has had four hits. He's been up 18 times.
- 19:36Nolan has short-winded the road, and misses low and away is the ball one-on-one,
- 19:40and here it turned and looked back at the mound this time,
- 19:42as if he were unhappy with his footing on that pitch.
- 19:46They are nothing-nothing, half-half of the second inning.
- 19:49Game number six of a great 1972 World Series curveball of Gondor.
- 19:54Here's a pass to him. Nolan is taking the plate on fire forever.
- 20:00He's all one-strikes.
- 20:11And they take low ball three.
- 20:13Angel Manzal is on deck.
- 20:16Ben Jean Connick behind him.
- 20:20The A's took his early north on that third base. Jerry Adair is first for Oakland.
- 20:26Gondor hits a line drive to a center field. He has a base hit.
- 20:29Nolan feels it on the first half, and with one on, the A's have their first base runner of the game.
- 20:35It comes here on the second with one out in here, then Jim Engle.
- 20:38He's struck the game-winning hit 94 last, and that's come from behind one for Oakland and Oakland.
- 20:47Angle was up yesterday as I think he had earlier the chance to do the same kind of thing.
- 20:52Hits the ball very sharply to the right side. It was fielded by Morgan, and they threw him out.
- 20:58The regular season, Angel played in only 91 games.
- 21:01At 2.46, he did have five home runs.
- 21:04Nolan's fifth. Right call.
- 21:09He's around the plate all the time.
- 21:16See some clear blue skies ahead.
- 21:19New today, it's been kind of overcast and rainy.
- 21:23Curve ball hanging high and inside, an anglous one-and-one.
- 21:37Pictures on the fingers were all serious.
- 21:47Jim Nolan's overheaded curve ball looked a lot sharper early in the game than it did here on Saturday.
- 21:54Dragon on in with one out again, but he did have that field of problems.
- 21:58Worked out a little bit yesterday in the middle of the evening.
- 22:00He said today he showed his one-up only ten minutes before by the blue, but apparently he's already.
- 22:05He had to find out if he could go today.
- 22:07Here's a one-and-two pitch to Mangrola curve ball hitting the ground with a third base and Minsky takes it.
- 22:11He's going to have only one play, and that's the first, and he doesn't hit him.
- 22:14Now he called him out.
- 22:17Chris Pellicutt is calling safe at first.
- 22:21It looked like him, then he called him out.
- 22:28Not only did it look like him, Marty, that's exactly what he did.
- 22:31He called him safe and then called him out.
- 22:36Apparently pointing at the side, strings of Mangrola tailed the top of the bag.
- 22:42Wow, that could be the only thing, and it might turn out to be a huge play.
- 22:49Now, runner at second base, Vando, and here's Gene Tennis.
- 22:53He's at four home runs in the series. Curved turn is high for ball one.
- 23:01Mangrola is putting the A's lineup today to try to get a little more batting points.
- 23:05George Hendricks, the rookie who had been starting, had not hit the ball at all.
- 23:08Here's a wild pitch.
- 23:09Five wide balls. Tennis got under that one, and it's a mile high out in the left field.
- 23:14One seven-seat rose. He's got it.
- 23:16A really good play here in the second inning.
- 23:20He's hitting it in half, for sure. Hope for nothing to focus on about it.
- 23:25Hi, Johnny Bench for Anco Windshield wipers.
- 23:28Can you imagine the reaction if a manager told their team that he was supplying them with baseball bats that weren't absolutely the best?
- 23:34Well, your team, that is your family, deserves the best, too.
- 23:38Anco Windshield wiper blades.
- 23:40If your present wipers are streaking, replace them with Anco wipers.
- 23:43Look for the service station with the bright yellow Anco cabinets.
- 23:47They can snap on new blades while you're gassing up.
- 23:49Tell them you heard about Anco from Johnny Bench.
- 23:52This year, almost all the new cars are the same.
- 23:55Most of the 1973 models are designed to run on low octane gasoline, like Golf Team.
- 24:02The owners manual says so.
- 24:04Check the recommendation in your owners manual and try a tank full of Golf Team.
- 24:09It has a performance out of the package you'd expect from Golf, and it costs even less than Golf Regular.
- 24:15So why pay more than you have to?
- 24:17Try Golf Team, a low-cost gasoline for new cars.
- 24:22The lights have been on here at Riverton Stream since now before the game, but even though showers are forecast, we have some this morning, the sun has come out.
- 24:48It's with again the Cincinnati Sun.
- 24:52Johnny Perez who's had a hot guy in the World Series with eight haytacks in these wild years and a number of hits.
- 24:58Facing vital blue in the first pitch of the curve high, ball one.
- 25:02Very unusual happening, a runner missing first base.
- 25:07Mind you, the broad jumper missing the takeoff board and just didn't have a chance.
- 25:12Here's the one and all, the Perez, and a fastball miss is it's 2-0.
- 25:17Perez, one of the real good RBI men in the National League.
- 25:21Six years old, 90 RBI's are better for Cincinnati.
- 25:26Here's a high foul pop out of play.
- 25:31Vita Blue has not overpowered any of these Cincinnati batters as yet.
- 25:37Second time around in a World Series for players to see the O's and pitchers.
- 25:41You're going to see more offense.
- 25:45We'll talk a little bit more about how the pitcher's going to throw through them, how the breaking ball breaks.
- 25:49Here's a fastball takeoff.
- 25:52Here's a 2-1 pitcher, full curve, hit up into the air and to right field, not deep.
- 25:55On comes Matty Allure of the A's and he's got it.
- 25:59And Perez had retired for the first time in this second inning.
- 26:03Here's Hal McCrae.
- 26:07McCrae has got six times in the series. He's had three hits, two of them pinched.
- 26:13McCrae openly admits that he is a fly-sher for play.
- 26:16He said, I come out swinging. I may fall flat on my face, but I'm going to go down swinging if I go down.
- 26:22Get 278 this year and off-roads for the Reds.
- 26:26Fitzgerald is high on inside ball on him.
- 26:28Vita's not getting that real good fastball over the inside part of the plate.
- 26:32Usually an out-fist for him against right-handed batters.
- 26:39Here's a back one, one on a miss, and it's 1-1.
- 26:51And it comes to the plate with an off-feed that misses outside, 2-1.
- 26:57Each club has one Vita Morgan, a one-out double.
- 27:01He went over the third on the play on a throw near by Mandele.
- 27:05The Blues got Toleman and Vint.
- 27:09He went for McCrae. He's right down on his knees, pointing at that one.
- 27:13He's all too fresh.
- 27:16He does get his catch, doesn't he?
- 27:22Blue, take that white shoe in the air and throw it. McCrae hits it in the air, it's in the field.
- 27:26Angel Ann Brawler, fast-fist in front of the warning track, locks the room and he makes the catch.
- 27:35Mary Barrow Clenky.
- 27:37Clenky hit a home run yesterday.
- 27:40The Reds were behind 3-1, he made it 3-2.
- 27:47He'll have two hits in the World Series this year and he has got 15 times.
- 27:55The Reds are in the lead.
- 27:57Mary Barrow is the fifth.
- 27:59I found Wall off first near the stands and here in Cincinnati the stands are much closer to the field than in Oakland and that one goes over into the seat.
- 28:08Let's get out on the second inning.
- 28:10Oakland and Cincinnati, nothing and nothing.
- 28:13The A's win it, it's all over for 1972 and they'll carry a World Championship trophy back to the Bay Area.
- 28:20The Reds win it.
- 28:22The Bits of Unki high, a ball one and one.
- 28:31Reds entered this World Series highly favored, they won it all.
- 28:36Here's a drive towards left center field, man's well on his bicycle, down to his right, he reaches up and picks it off and it's 3-3 down here in the second.
- 28:43And the score at the two innings of play, the Riverfront Stadium is Cincinnati and Oakland, nothing, nothing.
- 28:49For quite a while now these World Series broadcasts have been brought to you in part by White Guard anti-perch blitz.
- 28:55The one that really helps keep you dry when the action's hot.
- 28:58Now this year White Guard has created a brand new anti-perch blitz, White Guard Natural Gnist.
- 29:04Except it's name is great weapon spider, it's regular White Guard.
- 29:07And it's got a great new scent made from natural ingredients so it smells light and clean, not heavy or artificial like a lot of other anti-perch blitz.
- 29:15You White Guard natural scent anti-perch blitz, you like the way it works, as it is actually the way it smells.
- 29:23The smoothest edge we can put on a blade, for the smoothest shave we can put on your face, a platinum-gruss blade. And some days Gillette will make even a better blade for your cup. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
- 29:46We made the first blade, and we're still the first blade, Gillette. Platinum-gruss.
- 29:55Ladies and gentlemen, we're with Marnie Moore, we're watching Dick Williams, the manager who has come out, to talk to Bill Haller, the home plate umpire, and the third state umpire, Mel Ciner.
- 30:05The first one is from the American League, the other from the National, and I have no idea what it is the ladies were talking about. The get back of the
- 30:32green, the batter, Marnie Moore being up. Green has had four very picked in this series, he's about 12 pounds, the fifth one I'll hit deep short. Over for the Wild Contest, he throws the first, and green is an easy eye.
- 30:46And now let's hear then, the Wiches hit, the conversation between Dick Williams and the third state umpire, Wiches home plate umpire, talking to Bill about the picture blowing on his hand as you know during the regular season in order for them to put their hand up to their mouth to blow on it or touch the fingers with their tongue.
- 31:04They have to step off the dirt part of the pitching mat, but during this cooler weather, out in Oakland and here again today, apparently they've given permission for a picture to do that while on the mat.
- 31:14The batter lose, takes the call strike.
- 31:23Larry Mullen, throws a curve and hits the inside corner quite easily.
- 31:37Mullen, a native Californian, now makes his home here in Cincinnati.
- 31:45The third ball is set free.
- 31:49Mullen has gone through the eighth batting order, the first time around without being screwed on this time. He starts all over with Burt Cavanaugh.
- 31:58He had only one base hit, he really had two. That man's ball was a shift from a bag at first as he was running. He had beaten out a deep rounder to the left side of the infield.
- 32:08This fellow too has a calling face until he's thrown missed the ball. Mullen there, a shift went off the leg and a picture Mullen knocked it down under him to ball a first to the outside.
- 32:17Good break for Gary Mullen there, but that ball did hit him.
- 32:21No way until 1-2-3 and the third inning of the kill, Cincinnati and Oakland, nothing to nothing.
- 32:26Hi, this is Joe Garaglio.
- 32:28With World Series time here, managers depend on players to deliver dependable performances.
- 32:33And like a manager, you want dependable performance from your car.
- 32:37So look at the Big Dodge. It's got dependable features such as electronic ignition for more starting voltage.
- 32:44And there's an electronic voltage regulator for longer battery life.
- 32:48Plus, first-person quiet ride for smoothness and quiet.
- 32:51But these features won't cost you. They're standard on all Big Dodge models this year.
- 32:56See the Big Dodge soon at your Dodge dealer.
- 32:59Extra care in engineering makes a difference.
- 33:02Please type the corporation card.
- 33:04It makes a difference. Dodge, Chrysler, and Plymouth. Discover the difference. Drive one.
- 33:31Here's our 30-second for station identification.
- 33:35It's Sam Jellegate from KGW Portland.
- 33:38You don't have to give up good taste to save on calories. Dodge, Chrysler, and Plymouth taste so good, everybody likes it.
- 34:04Everybody likes it.
- 34:09That's all now. The last half of the third inning, Dave Concepcion.
- 34:13The red shortstop at the plate and he has a count of one strike.
- 34:16His final blue throws the curve for Stuck 2.
- 34:19Concepcion has to play it outside of the baseball.
- 34:22He thinks it might be a little too good color, do you?
- 34:26One challenge broken through in Cincinnati.
- 34:31Nothing or nothing.
- 34:33Concepcion will be followed by Nolan and Rose here in the last half of the third inning.
- 34:39Try to breathe for the look and move.
- 34:42It's the windup. Here's his O.C. pitch.
- 34:44And he lets himself be stung with a blue blazer.
- 34:47A fastball. Concepcion stands at the plate to question the curve.
- 34:51But that ball is long gone. Over the steering, around the horn, it goes.
- 34:55Here's his first crack out of the day.
- 34:57And that's the first one, Jim, that looks like he's really put the mustard on.
- 35:02Here's steering home on the pitcher.
- 35:04Right-handed short or right-handed batter.
- 35:17By this first pitch, John is low for ball one.
- 35:27Nolan's done it twice the first game without a hit.
- 35:31Two now, Mickey. It's a 2-0.
- 35:39One out third inning, no score.
- 35:47Two and one pitch to Nolan. He'll be taking years and it's costing him his strength, two and one.
- 35:53Third base coach Alex Grumman for Cincinnati.
- 35:58Good shooter at first.
- 36:01Two and one pitch. Here's a dry foul.
- 36:03Nolan hitting a little late at a blue fastball.
- 36:18Nolan was scheduled to strike yesterday's game.
- 36:21Now he has been able to throw well the night before in his warmup, but he did not.
- 36:26Two-two pitch.
- 36:28That's Nick's kind of started to throw that ball the 30th time they had him, and now blue comes up with a big pitch.
- 36:34He needs a strike here to Gary Nolan.
- 36:37Down comes the arm and a pitch out of the way.
- 36:39Swinging strike three, and he really hung that one.
- 36:43By the blue, looking now as if he's getting a little loose.
- 36:46But he's throwing that ball by the eight to nine hitters in the lineup.
- 36:50Now he has to go to work against the top. Here's Deetrose, the left fielder.
- 36:59Reds have one hit. A double off the wall and right center by Joe Morgan.
- 37:04The A's have one hit, a single by Sal Vando.
- 37:09Here's blue, six to Deetrose.
- 37:12And he's almost hit with a breaking ball and gets out of the way.
- 37:16Yelling a little bit, but he realized there's some bad blood between rows and Sal Vando's players.
- 37:24Blue misses low with a curve at two and all.
- 37:28A pitch that goes to the batter, and they can do it with a breaking ball.
- 37:34Rose, looking him over, is pounding stuff on front of blue now at two and all.
- 37:40Ball three.
- 37:46Blue ordinary, a pretty good control pitch it.
- 37:50For the three-game, he walked only 48 while striking out 111.
- 37:54He's got to throw some strikes in a row to Rose.
- 37:57Ball four, he lost him.
- 38:01Now it's Deet the Reds running game turns on here.
- 38:05Let's look at that from Gene Tennant. The A's catcher has taken a lot of abuse from the Reds runners in this series.
- 38:12It has not all been Gene Tennant, however. The A's pitchers have not done a very good job of holding the runners on at first base.
- 38:22Rose too out of walks to beat Rose, and with too out of walks yesterday to Joe Morgan.
- 38:27Started a Cincinnati rally. Rose jumped off first, blue looked at him.
- 38:31Here's the pitch to the plate, taking a cold strike. Morgan was trying to help Rose out if he wanted to go.
- 38:36Right ahead, a very quick release at time, after he dropped down to the set position.
- 38:51Rose sold 10 bases for the season, and he's still in one of the series.
- 38:55There he goes, a pitch to the pitch out. Tennant throws a second right on target, and Rose is out a mile.
- 39:01Gene Tennant called a pitch out, and they got Deet Rose down at second. It really wasn't very close.
- 39:06So that's a three inning display. The score, Cincinnati and open, nothing and nothing.
- 39:12Oh, gentlemen, open, more than anything, too many. More than ten riding snow caps, more than just enough.
- 39:27Oh, gentlemen, open, a tiparillo to a lady, all the way to pizza, from the blue color.
- 39:42Tiparillo, regular, Minnesota, dramatic.
- 39:46At Rhodes, we have got a lot to say, and we care about the people who shout, dear, who give you good reason to stop here.
- 40:00Just think of Rhodes as your door.
- 40:03The automatic answering service records incoming messages.
- 40:19Well, several things happened in that last inning, Ronnie, in that blue deadlock loser striking our conception of Nolan as you pointed out the eight, nine batters.
- 40:33But when he lost Deet Rose, he lost them on four pitches that were all low in the strike zone as opposed to high where he had been when Perez, McRae, Vance, and Manke were all getting the good shots at him.
- 40:40And then again, Dean Kenneth, who has not been the defensive catcher in this series that Johnny Vance he has all year long, finally had a chance to throw out the running people in this field.
- 40:50Now we go to the fourth. It will be a really, really good uptick. Here is Monty Moore.
- 40:54One of the secrets about throwing a man out with a pitch out is to take a time, and Kenneth definitely did that.
- 40:59He missed throwing Rose out one time earlier in this series.
- 41:02Rose was going just because he heard his throw and threw it high and out in the center field. He had been one right on the button.
- 41:10Here is Mattie Allee, the leadoff.
- 41:12There you know when pitch to Mattie is inside for a ball one and oh.
- 41:16These men are playing for a lot of money.
- 41:18Some of the players have figured it out on the basis of the money taken in on four straight fellouts to four games the players share in.
- 41:25The winners may get over $20,000.
- 41:29Now ball back to the frame one and one.
- 41:32The last three years the winners of the World Series have gotten over $18,000 a man.
- 41:39A dramatic jump after 1969 when the winners got $13,000, but it went up very high after that.
- 41:49This World Series ever the winners got $1,100 a man. During the war years they sometimes got as low as $400 a man for losing in a World Series.
- 42:00Allee popped one up right out into very short right field. On comes McCray.
- 42:05He has it.
- 42:07Went out on the fourth inning.
- 42:12Gary Nolan, picking a strong game here this afternoon. Not overpowering, but he's getting his curve ball over.
- 42:18Here's Joe Rudy.
- 42:24Joe had a fine ball in a fairly deep right field far out on the first inning.
- 42:35Rudy takes his time more than any other player in the series getting into the batter's box.
- 42:40He's stuck now in a fist drum with a curve a little high.
- 42:47Reds give Rudy about 90 feet of the left field foul line.
- 42:51Near left field there Rose plays on a line from first three seconds right on out into the outfield.
- 42:58Definitely don't expect him to pull the ball.
- 43:01There's a high fly ball into left field. Rose has to go over to his right.
- 43:05He has plenty of time to get under that one.
- 43:07He's got it.
- 43:08UCNHRQ to hit on that high. He is just missed hitting the whole run by a fraction of an inch on the baseball.
- 43:16He's just got under that one a little bit.
- 43:19Another two-ball on a near-black etching.
- 43:24Cincinnati and Oakland nothing and nothing.
- 43:281972 World Series from Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati.
- 43:32We're happy you're with us here on NBC and around the world.
- 43:36Wherever you might be following America's national fast time.
- 43:40This thing goes for a half-racking ball and fouls it off.
- 43:53Oakland has had only one base runner.
- 43:56Cincinnati has had only two.
- 44:04One strike down.
- 44:06Nolan's six.
- 44:12That play is really off balance against this right-hander.
- 44:18One later on Nolan's fastball.
- 44:22And Gary's well ahead of him in O-2.
- 44:31He's got a nice, easy way to run here.
- 44:36Just that flat of all, one and two.
- 44:41A gigantic crowd to welcome the Reds home last night at the airport.
- 44:46That's going both down three and strike three at the change-up.
- 44:50It's just up and up over there and he has struck out the eighth team up here twice in a row.
- 44:54In the middle of the fourth game, the scores.
- 44:56Oakland nothing, Cincinnati nothing.
- 44:59This is Johnny Brant speaking for ANCO Windshield wipers.
- 45:02Back before I was playing for the Reds, I always thought the right fielder had the best position on the team.
- 45:07All he does is stand there waiting for an occasional high fly.
- 45:11But you know right field can be like the windshield wipers on your car.
- 45:14They don't do anything either until some rain comes their way.
- 45:18But boy do they have to hustle in.
- 45:20In a rain storm or a snow storm, clean wiping ANCO Windshield wipers or snow blades can save your life.
- 45:27And then wipers like ball players eventually get old.
- 45:30Over a period of time, the sun, wind, and air pollution gets to them and rubber gradually deteriorates.
- 45:36And they really get aches and pains.
- 45:38If your wipers are over six months old, man they could be over the hill and going into a permanent swamp.
- 45:44So the thing to do is bench them.
- 45:46Drive into any service station where you see the bright yellow ANCO service cabinet
- 45:50and tell the man you want a fresh new pair of ANCO Windshield wipers.
- 45:54That's ANCO by Anderson.
- 45:56Definitely major league.
- 46:27Rise to run.
- 46:29And he missed it, strike one.
- 46:31That was a breaking ball and up high.
- 46:33Morgan ran up on the ball as if he wanted to run it.
- 46:35I think he saw that it was coming too high to get down.
- 46:38He tried to draw the bat back but he'd gone too far.
- 46:47Door board urging the Cincinnati fans on here.
- 46:50Third ball to Morgan, misses inside.
- 46:53It's one and one.
- 47:00They have struck out two and walked one.
- 47:02Reds and Pedro for a bone to work out on their goal fans.
- 47:06Blue six, breaking ball again.
- 47:09It is now two and one to Morgan.
- 47:11He really looks them over.
- 47:13He worked Raleigh fingers for a big walk.
- 47:16In the game yesterday, Leite turned it into a big run.
- 47:21He wants it.
- 47:23Now lost, back two.
- 47:25To walk him, it's almost like having him hit a double.
- 47:29Psychologically, it's probably worse on a team to walk him
- 47:32and see him steal seconds and see him hit a double.
- 47:36Any about him, I would imagine one reason he gets so many walks
- 47:39is not because he's so small and lifts them over.
- 47:41The pitchers have to work carefully to him.
- 47:43He can also hit the long ball.
- 47:45He has 16 home runs for Cincinnati this year.
- 47:48Spider winds, kicks and throws.
- 47:52High fly ball behind the plate.
- 47:54Dean Hinnis throws the last away right out inside the open.
- 47:57Dugout, he slips it away.
- 47:59And Morgan is the first out of the fourth inning.
- 48:01You know, Jim, it's pretty great to see what a world's dream
- 48:04does for a city.
- 48:05Here in Cincinnati, they had almost 15,000 fans at the
- 48:08airport last night.
- 48:09When the A's returned home from their first two games of the
- 48:12series, they had a crowd about that same size at the open
- 48:15day of court.
- 48:16And, mommy, really, I can't remember.
- 48:18And I talked to folks over the line.
- 48:21A greater two weeks of baseball, and they've urgently
- 48:24finished the playoffs in both weeks and now the four-off series.
- 48:28Just then, baseball's final year.
- 48:30There is Tolan taking a breaking ball strike at the A's.
- 48:34Both the Reds and the A's had to go five hectic games to win
- 48:38their division playoffs, baseball's first ever five-game
- 48:42playoff series.
- 48:43Tolan ran up on a fastball and left it in the catcher's
- 48:46mid-first strike at Tolan 2.
- 48:50Vita Blue and Gary Nolan were the same result, picking
- 48:52different kinds of ballgames here today.
- 48:54Vita overpowering pitcher Nolan off-speed specialist.
- 48:58O2 to Tolan, he's stuck him out.
- 49:00Nolan had about a half-cut at that pitch, and now he's asking
- 49:03to play it on fire where it was.
- 49:05So Vita Blue now is stuck out three and again.
- 49:11Here's Johnny Bench who ripped one towards the foul line
- 49:14and left in the first game with Morgan at third and two down,
- 49:18and Joe Rudy who's been an outstanding outfielder all
- 49:20year for Oakland ran it down back into the ball just as he
- 49:23crossed the foul line and banged into the fence.
- 49:28Here's the pitch.
- 49:29Bench swings and misses.
- 49:31What a cut he had.
- 49:33Johnny hit a home run off Vita Blue in the All-Star game
- 49:37in Detroit two summers ago.
- 49:45He hit a lot of them this year.
- 49:47Odie against Mass in late pitchers.
- 49:50Knocked in 125 runs.
- 49:53Changeup, misses low of all one-on-one.
- 49:57Bench in this series had a five-base hit, only one of them
- 50:00an extra-base job.
- 50:02Double off the right field wall here in Cincinnati.
- 50:08Here's a one-on-one pitch.
- 50:10Fastball on inside, two and one.
- 50:14That's the pitch that Vita is not really getting over
- 50:16effectively here today.
- 50:19Way more ball is throwing, Gary Nolan.
- 50:21May have thrown them as I was fighting them.
- 50:24He's working hard on the bullpen.
- 50:26Two on the bench.
- 50:28Ball three it is now.
- 50:30A shot of shooting at one spot.
- 50:32Looks like low inside, but knee-high and he's missing it.
- 50:38Now he has a big pitch to make to Bench.
- 50:40He'll be looking for one.
- 50:42He can spend four runs.
- 50:45Here it comes.
- 50:46By drive, deep left field.
- 50:48He just hit it out of here and it is one-gone.
- 50:51That's game ten advanced.
- 51:21Johnny Vance sends 50,000 plus fans into ecstasy here in Cincinnati.
- 51:32The pitch at Juarez, a passing ball toward third.
- 51:35Rando charges it. There's a throw to first.
- 51:37He got him and the ribs are out.
- 51:39Here on the fourth but not before Johnny Vance.
- 51:42Put him on top with a line drive homer into the left field fans.
- 51:45A score after four.
- 51:47One that happens in Cincinnati.
- 51:49Mike Moyer, wet head.
- 51:51Mike Moyer, a dry look.
- 51:54Roy Zucca, wet head.
- 51:57Roy Zucca, a dry look.
- 52:00With the dry look aerosol hair control, you look so much better you won't believe your ears.
- 52:07A wet head is dead and the dry look comes direct from this.
- 52:11More men use it than any other aerosol.
- 52:13Charlie Niesma, the dry look.
- 52:16A dry look from Gillette.
- 52:20When you heard about that Gillette Track 2, a two-bladed razor,
- 52:24you probably said, why should I sell out money for another razor?
- 52:28That's a good question.
- 52:30Here's a good reason.
- 52:32Because that Track 2 will give you a combination of closeness and safety
- 52:37that you just cannot get with a one-blade razor,
- 52:41no matter how many you have in your medicine chest.
- 52:44That's why the Track 2 razor, Gillette made it one blade better.
- 52:50Good morning, Roy.
- 52:54Jim Simpson back in an extended river from Chidamon, Cincinnati
- 52:57where Johnny Bench's two-out, three-one-pitch home run,
- 53:00his first home run in RBI of the series,
- 53:04as put the Reds out on Huffball, the score of one-and-a-thousand.
- 53:07Nolan has taken them out.
- 53:09But remember, as Nolan went back into the dugout after pitching the fourth inning to the A's,
- 53:13immediately Pedro Bovon began to warm up in the bullfist.
- 53:17It'll be Bando, Mangrel, and Emmett in this one-nugging ballgame,
- 53:21and that should be no surprise, Monty, as you pointed out, all five of these World Series games.
- 53:25For the first time in history, all of the first five have been decided by one run,
- 53:29and that's the score now.
- 53:31Cincinnati won, both for nothing, as Bill Hollett delved off the plate,
- 53:35Bando's in and waiting, and Bench is ready to give the signal.
- 53:38Monty?
- 53:39He's still ahead, the A's are only base hit of the game, a single in the second inning.
- 53:45Nolan winds and here's his hit.
- 53:47Bando hits a liner out over short, he has his second base hit of the game.
- 53:51Val Bando is on the start, the fifth inning for the Oakland A's.
- 53:55Jim Simpson, if Bovon does not set a World Series record for a fancy,
- 53:59he's hopefully going to set a World Series record for a warm-up.
- 54:02He's been up in every game out there.
- 54:04Had several runs at every game.
- 54:05Absolutely.
- 54:06Everything he has is rubber arm and likes to pitch all the time.
- 54:09He just continues to throw out there whether the pitcher's in trouble or not.
- 54:13Here's Angel Menguel, who had a very unusual thing happen to him.
- 54:17He had a base hit on a grounder his last time up, but he missed first base.
- 54:22That was called out.
- 54:24One nothing, Cincinnati.
- 54:27Here's the pitch.
- 54:28Curved ball, Menguel bangs it by third on the long side.
- 54:31It's a foul-trick one.
- 54:33Menti, not guarding the line on Menguel, hits over to the short side,
- 54:37steps beyond and just raises his hand.
- 54:39Is it the fake? Should I or should I not be over there?
- 54:44Yopfield plays Menguel, he hits the ball to right center field.
- 54:48Now left-hander, Grimpley is up throwing for Cincinnati.
- 54:52Now as he watched yesterday, they'll have everybody near both ends up.
- 54:55This is youthful work day.
- 54:58At least not in trouble by Nolan, and he'll be out of there.
- 55:01One strike pitch, Menguel fouls it off at second.
- 55:08I don't know exactly where the pitch was, bench hit.
- 55:11Three and one count.
- 55:13I'll tell you this, he definitely put it in the left field's fans in a hurry.
- 55:17A line drive went out of here as if it were shot by a bazooka.
- 55:23From here it looks as if it might have been low L.A., but not low enough, apparently,
- 55:30before he went away.
- 55:33One-seat count from Menguel.
- 55:35Third ball hit high in the air, the deep left field, back to a seat row.
- 55:39He's on a warning tag, turning around, he's got it!
- 55:49Angel man, Guarnier, just missed hitting one out of here.
- 55:53And Clark G. Anderson has got his way to the mound before that ball was caught.
- 56:00Here we know, a hung up curve ball on a two-strike captain Menguel,
- 56:04and he shoots seat rows to the wall.
- 56:06Pete leaps in the air, so he caught the ball before he hit the fence.
- 56:11He held onto it, and Bando, who was all the way to second, goes back to first.
- 56:18Really wasn't that tough a catch for Rose, he didn't have to jump at all, but he did.
- 56:26And he held onto the ball.
- 56:37Had to look good on the television screen anyway.
- 56:41And Menguel just missed it.
- 56:43Now here's Gene Kinnick.
- 56:46Nolan pitches.
- 56:48Dennis Rams one foul by third, and the A's are starting to get some cuts in Nolan now.
- 56:57It's one nothing, two thirties.
- 57:04Bob Locker is up in the Oakland bullpen.
- 57:07They might pinch hit for Vyner Blue if the A's get anything going here.
- 57:12Gene is on deck, and it's a possibility they could pinch hit for him.
- 57:16John Marquez is already selecting a bat.
- 57:19The fix for Dennis, low and away, a ball one-on-one.
- 57:22You know the Nolan look now is a little different on Gene Kinnick than it was on the first day of the season.
- 57:29Now the World Series season that is, because Kinnick, a relatively unknown to the Reds, gets you home run.
- 57:37There's a foul ball back this way.
- 57:41We got a World Series souvenir right here in the booth.
- 57:48A National League ball here in Cincinnati.
- 57:53You're home season out in Oakland, we're out getting a foul ball in the booth.
- 57:57It's so high, and it takes a major pop-up to get up here.
- 58:03One ball, two strikes on Gene Kinnick.
- 58:08And the first base for Bich.
- 58:11In the dirt, a great block by Johnny Bich.
- 58:14Oh, what a catcher he is to watch.
- 58:16That was a curve in the dirt with top spin on it.
- 58:19And out in front of the plate about four or five feet, which is the toughest kind a catcher has to handle.
- 58:24You don't catch those by putting your hand across your body and backhanding it.
- 58:28You move over to the right and block it, and Bich did just that.
- 58:32He now brings out the two and two on Gino.
- 58:39No one's set, here's the pitch.
- 58:41That ball here from the air, deep center field, way back in Goat Hill,
- 58:44and he may have room, he's on the warning track, he picks it up.
- 58:49And those who are back here first.
- 58:52I don't mind telling you, the A's have hit a couple of ropes here in this inning.
- 58:59Now here's Zick Green coming to bat.
- 59:09One to nothing, Gene Cincinnati, and Nolan has got to thank his lucky star to throw two balls or at somebody.
- 59:19It's 404 feet to the center field wall here in Riverfront Stadium,
- 59:22and Gene Tennis made Nolan use up, or told him to use up most of the rest.
- 59:29Bich to Green is an overhand to serve and he misses.
- 59:32Green means black one.
- 59:43No loss of stretch.
- 59:44The pitch, Green takes a curve in the dirt.
- 59:46Bich takes it again on the first half.
- 59:52Now Bando the A's open the inning with a line single to center.
- 59:56Angel Manswell, hit a ball to the wall in left field.
- 1:00:00Gene Tennis hit one to the deepest part of the outfield straightaway center,
- 1:00:04and Nolan made the catch on the warning track.
- 1:00:07Now here's Zick Green, who's had four hits in this World Series.
- 1:00:13One to one, the pitch. Drive right center field,
- 1:00:16Poland got to go for him to get this one.
- 1:00:18He won it, but he hit the wall a little hot.
- 1:00:20Here's Bando running third.
- 1:00:22He's calling home.
- 1:00:24The throw to the plate will not be made.
- 1:00:26The A's have tied the ball again.
- 1:00:34Boy, if you could ever see a roof caving in, it was right here in this inning.
- 1:00:37The A's have strung together four blasts in a row off Gary Nolan.
- 1:00:47You know, Jim Simpson, for a guy who hasn't batted very much this year,
- 1:00:50Zick Green has hit the ball well in this series.
- 1:00:53That's right, Martin.
- 1:00:54I've noticed he's bite of blue is coming out.
- 1:00:56The blocker's taking a seat.
- 1:00:57Now the blue is back in the ball game, 1-1.
- 1:01:00I think that Williams like his chances better with bite of blue.
- 1:01:04Well, that's going to be too much for Gary Nolan now.
- 1:01:06Here comes Farky.
- 1:01:08And the Cincinnati pitcher says when Farky comes out there,
- 1:01:11he's not coming out for conversation.
- 1:01:13He does all the talking on the bounce and in the clubhouse.
- 1:01:15When he goes to the mound, he's going out to take him out.
- 1:01:18So Farky Anderson has a hook in his hand.
- 1:01:20He's got to put it in Gary Nolan.
- 1:01:22Gary here in this inning after pitching four very strong innings for Cincinnati,
- 1:01:27just got the ball up.
- 1:01:29And I don't know, you might say, Jim,
- 1:01:31he's a little fortunate to be in a tie ball game the way they hit the ball right here.
- 1:01:35They've got to bring in Ross Grimsley, a running pitcher.
- 1:01:39One of the games of the series, he's a left-hander.
- 1:01:41Your ball is still in the bullpen.
- 1:01:44And Farky, I would imagine, hated to have to take Nolan out of here right now
- 1:01:47and bring in one of these men because the pitcher's spot comes up fourth
- 1:01:51in our inning if they get that far.
- 1:01:53And he may have the use of this pitcher for a very short time.
- 1:02:00Gary hits the fine round of applause.
- 1:02:02Cincinnati fans can't forget the 15 games he has won here this year.
- 1:02:06He's got an outstanding job.
- 1:02:17Thank you, Gary Nolan, out.
- 1:02:194-2, third inning.
- 1:02:20He has given up one round.
- 1:02:22He is, could be, charged to coach a green score from second base.
- 1:02:25There have been three base hits, two of those in this inning.
- 1:02:28And then again, Manguero, he rolls to the wall and he's going to stick home
- 1:02:32all the way to the warning track in deep center field, 400 feet away,
- 1:02:36before it brings Lyman that shot off the right center field wall
- 1:02:39to make it one to one.
- 1:02:41Nolan could lose the ball game to a green score, but might not charge it a one run.
- 1:02:46Grimsley is coming on, and Grimsley, of course, was a starter and a winner
- 1:02:51in this World Series, but then he had an idea in that very bizarre and great
- 1:02:55fastball game in which the A's came back in the last of the ninth inning.
- 1:02:59He was a loser.
- 1:03:00He has won five and two third innings overall, earned an average 3.46
- 1:03:05with one of the real fine young hitters, and his fastball is just that much
- 1:03:09behind Don Gulliver, who owns the best fastball of the Cincinnati Rift staff.
- 1:03:13Grimsley, who worked yesterday, will work again today, and he'll be picking
- 1:03:17divided blue, and that man is still going down in the bullpen for Cincinnati
- 1:03:22as he has been for the last 15 or 20 minutes.
- 1:03:25Pay to the ball.
- 1:03:27Three seconds, two out of the one-one ball game at the top of the fifth,
- 1:03:31and blue will switch around and back right-handed against Ross Ripley.
- 1:03:35Something he doesn't do too much, Jim.
- 1:03:38A little unusual, as a matter of fact.
- 1:03:40He's going to get right-handed here.
- 1:03:46Grimsley off the stretch to pitch to Vida.
- 1:03:50Fly ball on.
- 1:03:53Yeas bullpen was completely fresh.
- 1:03:57Vida might not be batting right here,
- 1:04:01but the ace of the bullpen, Raleigh Fingers, went some four inning yesterday.
- 1:04:06Here's the pitch.
- 1:04:07Black called it one-one.
- 1:04:09Grimsley popped that one in there with swimming on it.
- 1:04:13Cincinnati got their run on one mighty slinger bat by great catcher Johnny Bents.
- 1:04:19Yeas with a single and a double.
- 1:04:24Here's the pitch to blue.
- 1:04:25A five ball to green.
- 1:04:27Blocked the dash off second base.
- 1:04:28It might have disconcerted.
- 1:04:30Grimsley just enough that time to get him to throw that ball out of the track zone.
- 1:04:44Red Rock Theater is a playing shallow.
- 1:04:45Green Knight have a hard time scoring on a hit.
- 1:04:48Here's a flat call to two and two.
- 1:04:50That might be academic the way Grimsley is throwing now anyway.
- 1:05:01Vida bounced a lot of times with two strikes running batting left-handed.
- 1:05:06Menchie is playing a fairly shallow third right now.
- 1:05:10Two-two count.
- 1:05:11Grimsley comes to the plate.
- 1:05:13Ball three.
- 1:05:15Now he has a big pitch to make.
- 1:05:18If he loses blue, he'll have to pitch to Campanair.
- 1:05:26What a world series for pitchers and defenders.
- 1:05:33The old-time baseball purists love them like this.
- 1:05:37They take pitch on the way.
- 1:05:38He blocked him.
- 1:05:41Grimsley comes into the game to pitch to Vida Blue and walks in.
- 1:05:47And now Campy Campanair comes up with a runner at second, a runner at first.
- 1:05:53I would imagine the reason they chose Grimsley then over the right-hander for a ball is the fact that Vida Blue ordinarily bats left-handed.
- 1:06:03Well, he never swung with that right-handed.
- 1:06:06He took a total of six pitches and worked his way off.
- 1:06:10That's going to be a big watch.
- 1:06:12The first one issued to an A's player today.
- 1:06:15Now Burt Campanair comes on.
- 1:06:17He's grounded out on the infield twice.
- 1:06:19Grimsley's set.
- 1:06:20Here's the pitch.
- 1:06:21He can't be picked outside of all.
- 1:06:22One at all.
- 1:06:25And the native here, Cincinnati, get a little restless.
- 1:06:31Nick Green leading off second base.
- 1:06:34Just a little passage.
- 1:06:35Around the bases here, all the rest is green carpet.
- 1:06:38The pitch to Campanair is swung on and popped up.
- 1:06:40They're going to get out of it.
- 1:06:42Joe Morgan, the second baseman of Cincinnati, coming in behind the pitchers now.
- 1:06:46He got it.
- 1:06:47And Campanair is left to one-man on base in this world series and scoring the vikings.
- 1:06:52As it again, as Grimsley gets into pop-ups.
- 1:06:55We're at the halfway point of the game and we're right where we started as far as deciding it is Cincinnati and Oakland one-on-one.
- 1:07:02I'm sure you've all heard of the Plymouth Duster.
- 1:07:05That great little car.
- 1:07:07Economical, seats five comfortably.
- 1:07:10But maybe you haven't heard of its space duster.
- 1:07:14That's what Chrysler Plymouth is calling their duster when you order the new fold-down rear seat.
- 1:07:21Good feature.
- 1:07:22Gives you all sorts of room in the back.
- 1:07:24Six and a half feet, in fact.
- 1:07:27Practically transforms the car into a miniature moving van.
- 1:07:32That's fully carpeted back there, too.
- 1:07:35There's something else I think you'll like.
- 1:07:37The optional sliding metal sunroof.
- 1:07:41Chrysler Plymouth believes that since the 73 Duster is smart-looking and offers features like these,
- 1:07:48it could very well be America's best small car for the money.
- 1:07:53And I think they're right.
- 1:07:55Plymouth Duster.
- 1:07:59Extra care in engineering. It makes a difference.
- 1:08:0530 seconds for station identification.
- 1:08:07It's 11 a.m. from KGW Portland.

- 1:08:37Remember, electricity does so many good things for you. You don't want to waste it.
- 1:08:42We have another thriller working on us. For the last half of the game, here is NBC's Jim Simpson.
- 1:08:47Right, Marty Halle Grey leads it off. He's 0 for 1.
- 1:08:50Right, it moves to a man working in close to fastball. It's live at the center field. That's Rose VanGels.
- 1:08:57And it is off the wall. Now the second base goes to McRae.
- 1:09:02Wall was high off the wall. I doubt that VanGels would have gone back to the wall and reached him and reached that high.
- 1:09:08One penny top 10 in front of it. That's the warning track. Another bounce back to it.
- 1:09:13But it is a leadoff double to McRae. And here is Nike, who the last time up in the second inning hit the ball very hard, and Rudy made a fine running catch on him.
- 1:09:251-1 the score. By the blue has now got that open ball pin working again as Bob Walker dashes down.
- 1:09:35It's again warming up, and along with him goes Dave Hamill to the left-hander.
- 1:09:40Last two of his innings. Nike takes high from blue.
- 1:09:47And now Vando races over to the right of blue.
- 1:09:52Blue's wildness in the third and fourth innings has been low.
- 1:09:58He's coming off getting the ball up high, but got the pitchers down.
- 1:10:01Back times to McRae. He's got to pick up high. He landed for a double, and the first pitch to Nike is very high.
- 1:10:12The pitch strikes. Tom Hall, left-hander who came over from Minnesota and the Wayne Rangers,
- 1:10:21McRae has gone to the bullpen. Or Cincinnati, so both bullpens are busy. McRae is down at second base. Down is one ball, one strike to Nike.
- 1:10:32Blue from the stretch. Throw the change, and now he's up high.
- 1:10:37Two-one.
- 1:10:42And he's down to Alex Dramas, the coach of third base. George Sugar is over first base, mostly to his base runner, McRae at second.
- 1:10:52Wayne was coming in close by the bag. Two balls, one strike to pitch.
- 1:10:57Danny's fastball and it's fouled away off to the right. Two and two.
- 1:11:04Johnny Bentz landed a wide-a-blue 3-1 pitch into the left-field, Mezzanine in the fourth, for the first run of the ball game, and in the fifth, Oakland Tottes.
- 1:11:12Mando's single and green double to drive it in.
- 1:11:18And we are in the sixth consecutive post-ball game of this World Series.
- 1:11:23One ball right past the cross. A blue up to the cap and out going from deep shortstop and he's flying on a great fly as McRae goes to first.
- 1:11:33And now it's in short centerfield as the ball cuts the glove of blue, and that prevents the glow from showing.
- 1:11:41And that is the second fine play by Cavalier's William Anna out of the ultimate, a great running catch back in the first.
- 1:11:50But that's enough to bring Dick Williams out of the dugout.
- 1:11:57Talking about the faster cook, Marnie, we're going to see a lot of pictures here today, it looks like.
- 1:12:02Yes, the A's have even two of their starters out in the bullpen, ours is Cincinnati, but there's nothing to save them for.
- 1:12:08It's a long, cold winter after this one.
- 1:12:11The A's in the bullpen today will have riders Jim Hunter and left-hander Ken Holtzman.
- 1:12:20They have Hamilton out there and Horland Fenix is there for no more than about one man.
- 1:12:27It is not necessarily true that Dave, that William came out there, Dick Williams came out to short to fight a blue,
- 1:12:36about his thinking, but rather he might have been out there talking about what are they going to do with McRae and third baseman one out.
- 1:12:44Could there be a bunch for the right side? Could there be a bunch for the left side? What is the play?
- 1:12:48The infield has come in, Bando way to his infielders.
- 1:12:53Long to one, the going head run, McRae and third baseman one out, Concepcion was shut up with a curve in the third inning and then snuck out swinging at a fastball.
- 1:13:04The 49er with the hands inside, ball one, the fastball from white to blue.
- 1:13:10This is where blue desperately wants to strike out Concepcion again.
- 1:13:16Remove Bringsley from the mound and bring up a pinch hitter.
- 1:13:19Bringsley is out on deck. Blue is back with the ball, it just gets an ease and that is the strike.
- 1:13:25As Bill Haller and Concepcion steps out, one ball, one strike.
- 1:13:31All continues in the Central United bullpen. Hamilton and Locker in the open bullpen.
- 1:13:41One ball, one strike, one out, one to one the score.
- 1:13:48Haller briefly calls time, now Concepcion is ready.
- 1:13:55Left hander, white or blue, comes back and takes something off and a pitch out looks like Concepcion perhaps McRae on his way home from third base.
- 1:14:04Concepcion outside as blue is delivering the ball and puts a high and away pitch.
- 1:14:09They wasted one to see what McRae was going to do.
- 1:14:13Reds have had reputation, addresses on the base half.
- 1:14:18We'll look over McRae, he's sending their hands on hits to third base.
- 1:14:23Blue ready, fastball, set up here.
- 1:14:26There's McRae, very deep set up here, here comes McRae, here comes the throw, off line, a civil one for McRae.
- 1:14:56Now a cut of McRae for the double and the Senate Concepcion for their sacrifice wide a deep skinner field.
- 1:15:05But don't take away what Menke did by bouncing the man from second to third.
- 1:15:09Menke will now back himself and takes the called strikes.
- 1:15:12Menke did the job, matter of fact Menke almost drove in McRae himself,
- 1:15:17that had not been for the fine play of Kapaneris in back of second base.
- 1:15:20To the one, the Reds again at the lead, blue right back and Greenfield fouls it off to the left.
- 1:15:25And we're right back in a one run difference ball game again for the sixth consecutive tie.
- 1:15:30The Reds lead it two to one.
- 1:15:37Grimsley allowed to battle himself with none on and two outs.
- 1:15:41Takes a high at it, one ball two strikes.
- 1:15:47In the sixth inning Grimsley will be facing the left hander Alou, right hander Rudy and the left hander XT.
- 1:15:56Change up and Grimsley strikes out swinging.
- 1:15:58One run short on the one base hit, there were no errors and nonetheless, the end of five, the Reds lead the eight.
- 1:16:06Two to one.
- 1:16:11Hello. Hello Mr. Gilbert, this is Ms. Ramsey. I'm conducting a survey.
- 1:16:19Would you mind answering a few questions about air travel? I'd be glad to.
- 1:16:24What airline can send your reservation in three seconds? Delta.
- 1:16:28And which airline delivers your bags in an average of seven minutes after you land? Delta.
- 1:16:34Can you name an airline that flies the wide ride jet to 747 and soon will be C-10? Delta.
- 1:16:41That airline is known as the airline run by professionals. Delta.
- 1:16:46Which airline offers total service? Delta.
- 1:16:49As the airline you fly most often except the American Express money card and better yet you extend payment for all air on the American Express money card, phone and fly plan?
- 1:17:00Delta, Delta. Which airline do you plan to fly on your next trip?
- 1:17:04Would you like to take a guess?
- 1:17:07I'd love to take a guess. When do I fly?
- 1:17:34Good afternoon.
- 1:17:37One, a big play. Final blue. A power pitching strikeout type pitcher needed a strikeout of a man that he had struck out once before, Dave Concepcion. But he didn't get that strikeout. Concepcion fought him off in a one strike pitch and hit the ball in the center field. A very, very bad performance by the Georgetown. That's the play against the hard-crowing final blue. Now the reds fan themselves in front again. Two to one. Here's Jim.
- 1:18:04The A's in their fans may wonder what has happened to Matty Alou. Matty Alou has been well over 300 in his career since he won that batting title with the Pirates. Here he's come on to the World Series against a team that he faced many times this summer because he was with the Cardinals. And he has won for 19.
- 1:18:22In this ball game he's done with weakly the second base and with a short fly ball to right field. 0 for 2 in the sixth inning and takes a strike from Rinsley. Alou is now 0 for 11 since his only hit in this series.
- 1:18:37He came in the second game against Hall who was warming up moments ago. Rinsley takes something off this pitch and Alou fouls the shot. Two strikes. In the open six it's 2 to 1. If this week stands up we come back and we can really haul out the old cretacea tomorrow. There will be no tomorrow if we go through tomorrow. Two strikes.
- 1:19:06They lay Alou straight away and rather shallow and he lines this one towards Joe Morgan. He swings very deep and loops down to Eminence. Off line drive and Alou is out.
- 1:19:18Joe Rudy. Right right field and hit a very high pitch. Left field and the force just narrowly missing getting all of the bat on the ball. Got it very high. 0 for 2. 5 for 20 in the series. He hit a home run here to win the second game last Sunday.
- 1:19:38And then in the bottom of the ninth inning Rob Dennis Menke with extra base hits and the Reds have a chance to tie or win that ball game. Rinsley's left hander throws low and away ball one to Rudy. Rudy a regular season 300 hitter.
- 1:19:59And playing Joe going around to the right as he hits many balls to the right has great power to the right center. But there's one run here with pull and there's one pull to left gonna field for base hits.
- 1:20:10On two half to feed roads and Rudy the potential tying run is on base. That's the fourth A's hit. The first of Rinsley. And here's Mike FD who is over 14 and has struck out twice 20.
- 1:20:27The Raddlers against the right hander Nolan. Now he's got to face the left hander. Here there's a scouting report single. Pete Rose is really cheating. We've mentioned a while ago he plays Rudy about 90 feet over toward center with a normal defense for a right handed batter. That's an easy double.
- 1:20:44Here's one body. FD and the left hander steps in. Reading off at first is Rudy. The pitch. Fung on. Grounded toward first base. Perez with it. Raddler with his bare hand and goes over and sliding around the throw but not quite as he puts it on him.
- 1:20:58Here's the A's. What a delicate play out of something there. Raddler with a bare hand. Shoot it toward the line. Never did touch the bag but did touch that screen as he shoot around and towards first base. Rudy goes into second. FD is retired by Perez.
- 1:21:15Now Bando is 2 for 2 today. If he gets his third base hit here we've got to time all game again apparently. Bando has the A's with game winning RBIs all through the regular season. He has had no RBIs in this World Series. He scored the only run back in the fifth inning going ahead of Green Devil.
- 1:21:32Now it's 2 for 2. Both singles to left center. Lindsley Woods to Bando outside. 2 out. Puddle on the score. Cincinnati top of the sixth. Rudy down to second base.
- 1:21:52The ball is up and throwing again. All is taken a seat in the Cincinnati bullpen. Lindsley throws again outside. Lindsley most of his missed pitches have been away from the right-hander.
- 1:22:05He's keeping the ball to the outside corner and that's where he's missed. 2 and 0 as Bando gets out on deck. Simply throw low away and it is 3 and 0. And now Manky charges into Lindsley.
- 1:22:25Dennis may have gotten a sign from Sparky Anderson who is now off and walking back and forth and looking down to the bullpen.
- 1:22:38Now Anderson is coming out. He may have gotten a signal and that may be all on a 3-0 count.
- 1:22:43Lindsley just stands there and tears back. Quick kill on the rubber. Here comes Banchow. He made a change at 3 and 0 the other day with Mike Epstein at the plate.
- 1:22:573 and 0 count. He brought in Flake Carroll at that time and Carroll threw a fastball called strike and then Epstein went for the 3-1 pitch and grounded out.
- 1:23:05This is the fast thing right here Sparky might be saying, look, don't give the guy a one he can hit out of the ballpark. I guess he's going to leave it in here. He's nuts.
- 1:23:17Now he's going for the fingerball man, Pedro Borbol, who has been around a few times before. This is the sixth World Cairs game in Borbol and this will be his fifth.
- 1:23:35You may wonder how many times Johnny Vents really influences what Sparky Anderson does in a case like that. They say Vents is probably not as smart as he's been around in a long time.
- 1:23:47I would imagine that Sparky, knowing how well Vents knows his pitches, might get a lot of valuable information out of him. Managers definitely go to the catchers a lot.
- 1:23:56Well, he also tells me, Monty, that once you see Vents behind that plate and he should glance towards the dugout, that's just as Sparky ends it. He immediately goes because his catcher is only 24 years old.
- 1:24:08The man that's already been the most valuable player at 8'22, a man who again this year has led the Major League in home runs and an RBI, did a home run here today for one of his red runs, Sparky really takes the height of Johnny Vents.
- 1:24:23He's got everything. He's got good arm, he knows how to block, he knows how to call again, and he can hit the ball out of sight.
- 1:24:33Warbone is in warming up. Now, Vents only worked one inning. He hit up one base hit, that's it. He did walk one man, and that was fight of roof. Warbone coming on as an earned one average of 1.76, a change in five and a third inning.
- 1:24:53A play, he's given up just one run. He's walked a couple, he's struck out four. He's been very effective. When Pedro is in there, he hits that ball out of his batter, he hits that ball out of the ground.
- 1:25:03He has a real good shaker, not only a sinker, but it breaks down and into a right-handed batter. Red is trying to make World Series history. No team in World Series history has ever lost the first two games at home and gone on to win a World Series.
- 1:25:19However, there have been five teams in history that have been down three games to one, as the Reds were going into yesterday's game to come back and win it, the last game the Detroit Tigers in 1968.
- 1:25:30Now, Bando, with a count of three and all, he has two for two on the bed, has scored the only eight runs, gets in. Warbone working his way in on this three-oh count with two out, and Joe Rudy down to second base, and he gets the call strike, and Bando is kicking it all away.
- 1:25:47Now, Bando will look for his pitch.
- 1:25:53Pointing, hops it up. Playable, Johnny Bench goes inside the mask, hops his glove, and has it, and a ball on two pitches.
- 1:26:01Hits him out of it, no runs, one hit, no airs, and Joe Rudy up to second base.
- 1:26:06We go to the last number six, Cincinnati 2, Oakland 1.
- 1:26:10Hello, I'm Johnny Bench for Anco Winkfield Wipers, and I want to talk to service taking manager, display the bright yellow Anco Winkfield Wiper Service Cabinet.
- 1:26:18You can make the wiper business good business simply by asking one little question of every driver.
- 1:26:23Do your wipers stick to your windshield? No high pressure, no hard sell.
- 1:26:28If the answer is yes, suggest replacing the speakers with fresh Anco wipers and tell them you can do it in seconds.
- 1:26:34That's all there is to do.
- 1:26:35It's as easy as taking the base on balls, as Anco Wipers by Anderson.
- 1:26:41Nothing comes back, no turtles shall play. Nothing comes back, no turtles shall play.
- 1:26:47Come to Turkey, Greece, Saltwater, Turtle Wax comes through.
- 1:26:51Because nothing comes through, the turtle's hard shell finish.
- 1:26:54We shine your card up blinding, brilliant in 25 minutes, with Turtle Wax.
- 1:26:59Turtle Wax, in liquid or paste, anything else is mop turtle.
- 1:27:11The showing in this game has been best.
- 1:27:16The Reds get the scoreboard first with a line drive home run by Johnny Bench with 2 down and 4 thinning.
- 1:27:22Oakland tied in the fifth and a single by Van Doer double by Dick Green.
- 1:27:26The Reds get the doorhead run and a lead off double by McCray and a sacrifice fly ball by Dave Concepcion.
- 1:27:33We go to the last half of the sixth inning, White or Blue still on Brooklyn, once again, Jinta.
- 1:27:38Lee Rose is also on Pusher Walk.
- 1:27:40Favonaris had a great plan on the first inning, Rose Walk in the third and was thrown out trying to field.
- 1:27:45White or Blue's 2 in there, goes and he hits the chain.
- 1:27:48Popped up toward short white field, Pusher's green and happy.
- 1:27:52He's thrown out.
- 1:27:56Morgan doubled in the second, three third on the throwing here by Sennafielder-Manduel,
- 1:28:01but with left-hander there, Favonaris and Rudy turn an outstanding defense to play.
- 1:28:06In the fourth inning, no foul out to catcher Dean Kenner.
- 1:28:11Next win is today, need we remind you, it'll be a seven game series.
- 1:28:15A's come back, it's all over today.
- 1:28:18By the blue left hander, the left hander, and he fires a spike.
- 1:28:21Joe Morgan, who has now won for 18 in the series, but he has scored three runs.
- 1:28:29Blue right back and there's the ground ball to the right side.
- 1:28:32Over quickly comes green, underhand that, Dean has Morgan by four or five-six.
- 1:28:37Looks like it was Coughlet, he showed a little indecision there whether he should go for it or go for the back.
- 1:28:45Here's Bobby Colton.
- 1:28:47Favonaris made the good running play on him in the first with Morgan a third base,
- 1:28:52and he struck out looking in the fourth and turned around to run for Bill Hollins through where was that.
- 1:28:57Colton is the RBI leader in the series with four, and he led the Reds in the playoffs with four RBI.
- 1:29:08Blue pitches, ground ball up the middle, make it through Favonaris,
- 1:29:12way better to go on through to Tennessee, and as well as there, Colton takes a big turn,
- 1:29:17goes back to first and is holding it first.
- 1:29:19Here's Johnny Bent, who's hit the ball hard twice today, once for a home run.
- 1:29:37Way to go, Ben Walker and Hamilton go to work again.
- 1:29:42Bent pulled a wide of blue fastball, a vicious drive down the left field line in the first inning,
- 1:29:48Joe Rudy made a fine running catch.
- 1:29:50In the fourth inning with a 3-2, Lou just made it too good,
- 1:29:54and Bent slid it into the manzadine in left field.
- 1:29:59Time has been called, Favonaris has come in.
- 1:30:02I don't think there's any strategy here, just that Locker and Hamilton, if Joke's now, started to throw.
- 1:30:13Two outs, Colton is quickly red-sixed, they lead it by a run, they want more.
- 1:30:22Blue now ready, set, throw, high and away, ball on the bench.
- 1:30:29They say when Colton leads towards second base, he is not going.
- 1:30:34When he makes the motion to go back towards first, he may be running.
- 1:30:37They're watching, and he is checked over there,
- 1:30:40Blue forces him back with a throw to F.D. News holding it at the back.
- 1:30:47Colton plants the left foot inside the dirt, the right foot on the artificial turf.
- 1:30:51Now he's going to be checked back again.
- 1:30:55This is the aggressiveness of this running Cincinnati ball club.
- 1:31:00And so close is the game, they can't afford to let these fellas get a jump on it.
- 1:31:13Colton is still in three bases in this series already, in four attempts.
- 1:31:17Now he's leaning back, but he's not drawing in the pitches outside.
- 1:31:21Here's Swinnell, and Dick Williams is walking out now.
- 1:31:27That's the second pitch outside, Blue turns around and now he sees that Williams is coming out.
- 1:31:34And so Mike, if they anticipate a Bob Walker, a right hander coming on the base bench,
- 1:31:38they don't want that to happen, and they're going for the man.
- 1:31:45Running in comes Bob Walker.
- 1:31:49You could call Bob Walker the super sinker baller.
- 1:31:52He's been around a long time.
- 1:31:54Bob did a great job for Oakland this year.
- 1:31:56He had some good sports in Detroit, and it was him where he inherited a two-run lead in the last half of the semis.
- 1:32:02And Tigers forced three to win in the fourth game of the playoffs period with Bob.
- 1:32:07And to tell you the truth, most batters are going to hit the ball on the ground.
- 1:32:11He's a little bit like Bob Walton.
- 1:32:13He throws a hard sinker that goes down into a right-handed batter.
- 1:32:17He also throws a flier.
- 1:32:21Sinkerballers should have to have a little luck, really, because most batters do hit the ball.
- 1:32:26Walker doesn't strike out too many in the same way as Bob Walton.
- 1:32:29You have to hope that when they hit it, he hits it at somebody, and particularly on a turf such as this.
- 1:32:34They say it's hard for a sinker baller to win on artificial turf because the ball goes through there so quickly.
- 1:32:41On batters, however, we'll tell you that a sinker baller is effective here because the ball does take crew hops through the enclosures and cuts out the other area.
- 1:32:50Bob Walton here is in a pretty tough situation.
- 1:32:52Both managers are working here with changes in the middle of a chow field batter.
- 1:32:59Rocky Anderson and Dick Wimmin both have drawn out a pitcher before a batter is out of sight.
- 1:33:06Something unusual about him is this is Walker's first appearance in the World Series.
- 1:33:10He has been up and down, throwing nearly as much on the sidelines as he would in the games.
- 1:33:14All through this series, but now he's in for the first shot.
- 1:33:17The last year he was 6-1.
- 1:33:19At 10 saves, and the other one I was just 2.65.
- 1:33:23Yeah, he's strictly a reliever.
- 1:33:25He has been out with 50-10 baseball.
- 1:33:27He has been around for a lot of years with the White Sox and the A's and the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 1:33:32He has never started a ball game.
- 1:33:34And then upwards of a thousand that he's never started once.
- 1:33:38And in this World Series, it is now certain that through this game,
- 1:33:41no pitcher has finished their ball game or has started once.
- 1:33:45Everybody has been relieved.
- 1:33:47Now the situation is Johnny Banks has a 2-0 count to it.
- 1:33:50Coleman is on his first base.
- 1:33:52Still a danger to go.
- 1:33:54Walker, a right-hander, is come on to her face, the right-hander says.
- 1:33:58Coleman is on his way.
- 1:34:01It's halfway down the line and Bennett has a pop out of his hand.
- 1:34:04Post, still a base and five tries for Bobby Coleman.
- 1:34:18And a shot of 3-0.
- 1:34:20So now they're putting bench on.
- 1:34:213-0, they don't want bench to hit a ball.
- 1:34:23Remember what happened a couple of games ago with a count of 3-2?
- 1:34:28They made it just to put bench on and he took some breaking pitch from fingers to strike three.
- 1:34:33Johnny is 3-2 now but Johnny is standing in there swinging the bat.
- 1:34:55All right, needs to roll, carries with number of hits.
- 1:35:09Eight for 20 that's why, he's rolled for two today.
- 1:35:12Loved a couple of times, he's not living in runs but he's got a golden opportunity here.
- 1:35:17This is a man that can hit the long ball.
- 1:35:20Locker throw just down low with the pick up ball, all on.
- 1:35:27Two on four hits, no Irish for the Reds.
- 1:35:29One on four hits, one Irish for the A's.
- 1:35:32We are in the Cincinnati six, in Cincinnati.
- 1:35:44Locker ready throw, down ball falls, Ramaphosa drove his head in the couching.
- 1:35:49It bounds down under the A's, one ball one strike.
- 1:36:00These are Geronimo always warming up, Hal McRae, who as Monty described as a real slasher,
- 1:36:06he comes out swinging, he describes himself as the offensive player of the Reds.
- 1:36:11With a two to one lead, perhaps more, they're looking for defense probably in the next inning.
- 1:36:19A ball one strike, the Reds ready.
- 1:36:24There goes the runners and the ball is hit up the middle and they're running on the play.
- 1:36:28The Reds are in the first three to one and on the way to Bergo's fence.
- 1:36:58The runners throw a two-maner blue with Bob Locker,
- 1:37:12adds Holden's feet on him, setting up the intentional loss for the best,
- 1:37:16and then the Reds get this first RBI with a line drive single up the middle.
- 1:37:22Here's McRae, who doubled and scored in the fifth.
- 1:37:26A strike one, the play went off the grip with a double off the right center of the wall.
- 1:37:33Runners up the corner, bench is first, the Reds are first,
- 1:37:37field two out, now it's a three to one ball game.
- 1:37:41Locker ready, throws, down the court, Campanella, Campanella keeps the green for the fourth and second.
- 1:37:46The Reds get another run on one base hit and the running game really paid off.
- 1:37:52The Reds are two base hits, no errors, and two net left.
- 1:37:56The end of six, the Reds lead the A three to one.
- 1:37:59The Reds are the Reds.
- 1:38:27The Reds are the Reds.
- 1:38:50The Reds are the Reds.
- 1:39:09We call 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:39:12It's 1130 from KGW Portland.
- 1:39:14You know to some people, a newspaper is only a masthead, some pipe, and a few pictures.
- 1:39:19At the Oregonian, we know better.
- 1:39:22To us, a newspaper is people, individuals who we're very proud of,
- 1:39:26people like our sports writer Leo Davis.
- 1:39:29Leo's a dedicated journalist who's been voted the outstanding sports writer in Oregon four times.
- 1:39:34Leo's only one of the people who make the Oregonian a great newspaper.
- 1:39:38Tomorrow, have your morning coffee with Leo Davis.
- 1:39:42For Oregonian home delivery, call 226-2121.
- 1:39:46Now in the top half of inning number seven, the Cincinnati leading three to one on five hits.
- 1:39:51The Yankees have four.
- 1:39:52Here's Jim Fisker.
- 1:39:53All right, money.
- 1:39:54These are drawn and as expected, it's now out in right field.
- 1:39:57McCray is out of the game, and well he's dropped, and takes the strike.
- 1:40:02And well, well now that first strike, because of the fact that he didn't have the strike,
- 1:40:07he had to throw a beaten, that was from the second, and then sent.
- 1:40:10The world's very deep in the fifth inning, foul of the three, the two strikes.
- 1:40:16That's leaded by two.
- 1:40:17It's the first time in the world's series they have led by as much as two runs.
- 1:40:21This is a team that was down two games to none, dropping their first two at home.
- 1:40:25Out to open, the two out of three there.
- 1:40:28They came back here swimming three games to two.
- 1:40:30They're trying to even it today.
- 1:40:31Fine drive, base hit by Banguel to right.
- 1:40:34So, and turns it off with a fine backhanded play, and holds Banguel onto a single.
- 1:40:42And that was a fine play by Koehler.
- 1:40:44Backhanded the ball, racing for a draw on the ball, and they hit up on each other.
- 1:40:48Backhanded it, the court slips through to the warning track and the wall.
- 1:40:51Banguel had to hold on.
- 1:40:53Now the fans become apprehensive, because here is Gene Tennant.
- 1:40:59One of the few men in the world's series history that has hit four home runs in the series.
- 1:41:06Plain foul of the play.
- 1:41:09Tennant hit his first two, first two times up against Gary Nolan in the first game.
- 1:41:16Now on Thursday night, he hit a home run.
- 1:41:19And that was an important single in the ninth inning rally.
- 1:41:21And yesterday afternoon he hit a three-run home run.
- 1:41:24He has driven him seven runs.
- 1:41:27The breaking pitch has been very close over.
- 1:41:30Gene Tennant, he must have been getting pass calls.
- 1:41:38He lost out to Manguel on his first hit.
- 1:41:44We're blown to right-hander throws, and the breaking pitch misters outside, very close.
- 1:41:52And the home run is a good fastball on the first pitch, and twice now has thrown the breaking ball.
- 1:42:02Back to the fastball, ground it toward third base foul ball.
- 1:42:04Manke backhanded again, and he takes everything.
- 1:42:071970 World Series, everybody was talking about the most valuable player of that year was Brooks Robinson.
- 1:42:13Call him the vacuum cleaner over third base.
- 1:42:15Manke does not have the opportunity for the fantastic plays that Brooks Robinson turned in,
- 1:42:21but he sure has taken everything within range.
- 1:42:25Sometimes a little of those that are not in range.
- 1:42:28A ball two strikes the center.
- 1:42:30The long throws are fastball, foul again at the plate.
- 1:42:37The rest lead it three to one.
- 1:42:39We are in the open seventh, and the bottom part of the batting order.
- 1:42:45The long throws, the breaking pitch outside, swings foul, gets him still alive, and that's good to hold on to it.
- 1:42:51That is really one to the breaking pitch outside the strike zone.
- 1:42:55He's got a little piece of his bat on it.
- 1:42:58Still one ball, two strikes.
- 1:43:06The long after set throws, the breaking pitch, the ball is topped up.
- 1:43:10Call it short center field, has it.
- 1:43:16Bennett, this is some of the hitting fastballs of war zone, but Bennett is most ineffective against the breaking pitch sometimes.
- 1:43:25And now, Green is scheduled to hit, but is not going to hit.
- 1:43:32Andres O'Markett, who made headlines in the playoffs and in the World Series, is coming out.
- 1:43:38Marquez, one of those who comes up to swing.
- 1:43:41He is three to four as a pitcher, getting 7.50 in the World Series.
- 1:43:48And this Green making a move now, entering Green to double in the only run that the A's have.
- 1:44:01Marquez is the man who swings him down in the, what was it, with?
- 1:44:04Our money that he had 50 great season before coming up to you.
- 1:44:08Yes, he did.
- 1:44:09The year before last, he hit.387 in the minor leagues and felt that he should be in the big leagues.
- 1:44:15And he did not get a big league contract, so he held out the entire season last year.
- 1:44:20This year he opened up with the ILO, the AAA Farm Club, and had a very fine year.
- 1:44:25And there's been an outstanding sink hitter.
- 1:44:27He had seven hits and 15 at bats as a sink hitter during the last part of the season.
- 1:44:31And he's three to four here in the World Series.
- 1:44:35Left hander batter, Manuel Phillips first base.
- 1:44:40That ball long away, Marquez.
- 1:44:47John Metscher has come out on deck, and we're back for the pitcher locker.
- 1:44:52Breaking pitch, Metscher, and it's 2-0.
- 1:44:57Marquez not only three to four in the World Series, but two to three in the playoff, five to seven in both season plays.
- 1:45:06Manny was saying he held out all last year.
- 1:45:08He's got a good way to stand on this year.
- 1:45:10He's getting out of 3-8.
- 1:45:12Udo comes back on the back wall and has him swinging.
- 1:45:15He lost one strike.
- 1:45:18Learning those sevens for 15 during the season that Manny was talking about as a pitcher to Marquez is 12 to 22.
- 1:45:25That's better than 500.
- 1:45:28Two and one to him.
- 1:45:30Perez holding Manuel on his first.
- 1:45:33Out again for play.
- 1:45:35And again he's on the back wall.
- 1:45:39Two and two.
- 1:45:43Now Hall is throwing, and now the Hawks, they tell, has joined the blaze.
- 1:45:48Always named for players of need.
- 1:45:53National and American lakes, the Hawks and the Blaze.
- 1:45:56Translated to Space Gale and Tom Hall.
- 1:45:58Fastball mystery.
- 1:46:01Three and two.
- 1:46:04Three and two is one out.
- 1:46:06We will see whether or not Manuel will be off and running, or whether he will.
- 1:46:15Oro, the right-hander is ready.
- 1:46:17He's not running at first base.
- 1:46:18He's just breaking base, but on out goes to second base to suggest he on back to first too late.
- 1:46:23And the hesitation of O'Reilly might have cost him the double play right there.
- 1:46:27Kept him alive.
- 1:46:28He has the ball.
- 1:46:30All about it for a minute.
- 1:46:32And then through to second base.
- 1:46:36Well the A's and Marquez are still alive, and that will bring on Don Mitchell.
- 1:46:42Mitchell started out the year with a check of blazes.
- 1:46:48On out heading 216, six home runs, 44 RBI's, and as we said back in the 1965 World Series,
- 1:46:53his first World Series, a fast home run off the on-drive field.
- 1:46:58Mitchell the other night, in the mind-shaking of that dramatic come-from-behind three-to-two win,
- 1:47:03the A's had an important on-drive single to right center field.
- 1:47:10Reds lead it three to one.
- 1:47:13They're both in his big league.
- 1:47:19Now out comes Sparky Anderson.
- 1:47:22We are really seeing some tension.
- 1:47:25The wheels have turned and every one of these games.
- 1:47:29And with Reds and the Minsters coming up, it might be that Tom Hall, very quickly,
- 1:47:34will be called in because Sparky might be having bad dreams of a Minsters full on-drive home run.
- 1:47:40That's the foregone is leaving.
- 1:47:42And as soon as he makes that turn, Dick Williams will make the change.
- 1:47:45Dave Duncan was standing in the red dot with a batting coming on,
- 1:47:49and I believe they are called on Minter back, and have Dave Duncan's pinch hit for him.
- 1:47:55Duncan had a big pinch hit yesterday down the line in left field,
- 1:47:59and he's had a little faster, he might have had a dribble on the ball, and that's big banked in.
- 1:48:03Well these Minters in the managerial chairs for this World Series going into the 6th and 7th games,
- 1:48:09if it goes its part of the mile, and right now the Reds are certainly in the driver's seat,
- 1:48:13as said, I've got a 25-man roster and I've got to use them.
- 1:48:18So Tommy Hall, a hard-scoring, a little up tender, is coming on,
- 1:48:24and sure enough, Tom Minter will go back, and Dave Duncan will take his place.
- 1:48:28The eighth pinch hitting success in this series has been incredible.
- 1:48:32They had three straight pinch hits in the game 94 last in Oakland, the game they came from behind in one.
- 1:48:38Yesterday they had another couple of pinch hits, Marquez and Duncan both went up the pinch hitters and got base hits.
- 1:48:45Tom Hall is entering his third World Series game.
- 1:48:48His work to total avoid in thus far has not allowed a run.
- 1:48:53He has allowed three hits, he has walked two, and he struck out three.
- 1:48:58They call him to play, call him in, he'll face Dave Duncan,
- 1:49:02the big catcher who started out the year as a regular Oakland catcher,
- 1:49:06gets 19 home runs in the early drawing and most of his RBI's 59 in the early drawing before he can a stick over.
- 1:49:12He comes up with two outs, Marquez on a first base, in the Oakland 7, has ways down by a score of 3 to 1.
- 1:49:21Him, I'm sure, there'll be a lot of discussion about whether Bob Ong thought that that was going to be the third out
- 1:49:26with the throw of the first base or if he thought the runner had taken off the first on a 3-2 cast
- 1:49:30because he had an easy double play ball hit back during time like Marquez a minute ago
- 1:49:34and as you mentioned he had that hesitation, he looked right at first base right off the bat
- 1:49:40as if he thought well there's two down and this will make the first.
- 1:49:43Well let's see if it makes a real difference or not.
- 1:49:46He would have been out of the inning with the pitcher leading off from the eighth inning.
- 1:49:50What he is, he must now face Dave Duncan's fifth inning for the pitcher.
- 1:49:57Roger Wirtz, the third of an inning, gave up a walk in the base fifth.
- 1:50:02No luck.
- 1:50:05Alright, Tom Hall is ready.
- 1:50:09The rally's just a rally.
- 1:50:11Lane charge expected, Hall throws and it's up high to Duncan ball one.
- 1:50:15If there is a seventh game tomorrow, right now you'd have to say it looks like it, wouldn't you?
- 1:50:20The two runs is not that much, although it's been 20.
- 1:50:23We're one of the only game in this series.
- 1:50:25Lane charge are expected tomorrow at 60 percent chance.
- 1:50:29One ball no strike.
- 1:50:31Duncan tries to catch a swing on a breaking pitch and ten out.
- 1:50:35It's a strike. One ball one strike.
- 1:50:38Duncan had a shot single round the left field line against the base game at the century.
- 1:50:45Dave called him strong.
- 1:50:50Now, very empty, waiting for the Reds to get out of it if they can.
- 1:50:53Hall is ready, him throws and this one is up high.
- 1:50:56Two balls, one strike.
- 1:51:01The crowd in Cincinnati becomes so quiet, and the A's are in any kind of threat.
- 1:51:07It's almost as though you're doing a golf match and you're close to a man about to take a cut.
- 1:51:11You don't want to talk too loud.
- 1:51:13We'll see him this early next.
- 1:51:15There are more than 50,000 here looking on.
- 1:51:17Here's the two-one pitch, and Duncan is out in front of it, and it's a strike two.
- 1:51:23Two balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 1:51:26Open seven.
- 1:51:31Left side of the infield for the right-handed Duncan, way back.
- 1:51:36He's 10 to 15 feet in back of it.
- 1:51:41Already two-two, and heart team out clean.
- 1:51:45No arms, one hit, no errors, and Marquez has done it at first base.
- 1:51:48He's over the last two to seven, and the Reds continue to lead the A's, three to one.
- 1:51:53My dear, I remember when traveling the far, there was an excellent delight.
- 1:51:57Oh, we depleted that world.
- 1:51:59You believe me, at the airport a sky cab ran to the curb and kicked in our luggage,
- 1:52:04and we drove off to kick a car to a man in a red jacket the rest of us to the gate,
- 1:52:08and we never spent a minute waiting in line.
- 1:52:11I was just with a wide ride seven-four to St. Louis, and oh my dear,
- 1:52:14there seemed to be lots of drugs arrayed on the street.
- 1:52:18Oh my god, just went by the bird.
- 1:52:20We had to make time in the field as to, I mean, truly professional.
- 1:52:24Our darling, the fight was all too short, and you know,
- 1:52:27our luggage actually beat us to the craniums there.
- 1:52:30My act took the floor, there was such a joy.
- 1:52:33I can't remember, Grandma.
- 1:52:35Just last month, my dear, when Grandpa took me to Miami and drove an airplane.
- 1:52:39Enjoy Delta's total service on your next trip.
- 1:52:42Charge your Delta tickets on the American Express Money Card.
- 1:52:46You can even extend payment for your airfare on the American Express Money Card
- 1:52:50sign and fly plan.
- 1:52:52Delta is ready when you are.
- 1:52:57With McDonald's Big Mac, you get a lot to ob.
- 1:53:02Cheese, special sauce, and a double helping of cheese,
- 1:53:06all in a toasted sesame seed bun.
- 1:53:09McDonald's Big Mac, open wide and say, ah.
- 1:53:14Mickey in the 3-1 ballgame.
- 1:53:25Mickey is wide to center and ground about 0 for 2 and takes the pitch inside row 1.
- 1:53:31I can give you a couple of predictions for tomorrow.
- 1:53:33If it goes to the seventh game, it will be Jack Gillingham for the reds
- 1:53:37and Blue Mets for the reds.
- 1:53:39And it's supposed to rain tomorrow.
- 1:53:44Hamilton is back and gets the fastball on the outside corner.
- 1:53:47It's like one.
- 1:53:48One ball, one strike.
- 1:53:50This is still a close ballgame.
- 1:53:52I think we get a little spoiled by the fact that every game has been so low scoring
- 1:53:56and so close.
- 1:53:57Here's the pitch down low in the dirt.
- 1:53:59Kind of figured out, 2 and 1, that when any team gets a lead of 2 and 1,
- 1:54:04you get the feeling that's just a 2-1 pitch.
- 1:54:10Hamilton gets back with a very high inside fastball and he's gone to 3 and 1.
- 1:54:14Thank you.
- 1:54:20Mr. Williams does not want to use Raleigh Singers today.
- 1:54:22He's been just pitching so much.
- 1:54:25Tomorrow is the final day.
- 1:54:27All the top players are going to be in the game.
- 1:54:29He'll have to wait for it to come down.
- 1:54:34He's got a lot of room.
- 1:54:35He's lost his way as Mets and Hazard for the first out of the 10-97.
- 1:54:41Just beyond.
- 1:54:44We'll hit a final blue fastball to Pete Kennafield back in the fifth inning.
- 1:54:49Novena going ahead runs.
- 1:54:51Al McCrary in third base.
- 1:54:54Back to five flies.
- 1:54:59The other time at bat he struck out.
- 1:55:00Also a lighter blue fastball.
- 1:55:05Al Williams throws in a surprise.
- 1:55:09On deck is Tom Hall.
- 1:55:17Westhander into the windup and changes on a breaking pitch.
- 1:55:25It's down low.
- 1:55:26One ball, one strike.
- 1:55:30In the Oakland eighth it's the top of the batting order.
- 1:55:33The top of the batting order hasn't done much in this World Series.
- 1:55:37Half an hour's the loo has been hands up.
- 1:55:39One-one and the pitch is again low.
- 1:55:42Again a breaking pitch.
- 1:55:43Two balls, one strike.
- 1:55:49Each team has five hits.
- 1:55:51A's committed her arrow.
- 1:55:52That did not hurt.
- 1:55:53Reds lead the three to one.
- 1:55:56Back to the fastballs.
- 1:55:57Round ball, eight-hit left field.
- 1:56:04Amelan gives up the first base hit.
- 1:56:07Tom Hall will be up there.
- 1:56:11As the first team on lead I would imagine Tom Hall is up there to move to Pepsi on as this team won the second base and left Pete Rose, who drove in the winning run yesterday, out of bringing home.
- 1:56:23Van Mell comes in a third base.
- 1:56:28That's team holding it first and preparing to bounce toward the plate of messages.
- 1:56:32All left hander battered.
- 1:56:39Amelan tears for the sign. Rose waits on deck.
- 1:56:42Vando's all the way in now. Hall squares around a good defunct.
- 1:56:46Misses at the strike.
- 1:56:50Pepsi on the open too far off the bat.
- 1:56:53Strike one.
- 1:56:54Kubiak is kept behind him hoping that his playoff and tennis could throw him out on a pickoff play.
- 1:57:02Now Amelan discusses things with Kavanagh.
- 1:57:05Kavanagh told him with so long in the lineup that Vando had moved in so far he had to stop him with over wondering when he was going to pitch.
- 1:57:11He was right on top of Hall.
- 1:57:16Ready again.
- 1:57:18The ball is busy again for the eight. Here's the pitch.
- 1:57:21It's missed again. The throw to second base is he's on a roll and he's paced.
- 1:57:25He's not going to stick his front end so he's going to be sliding because the throw isn't coming by.
- 1:57:35Now Hall with two strikes can swing away.
- 1:57:42Yo Holland is the man. The right hander down on the open broke in.
- 1:57:47Red bleeding by two hoping to add an insurance run.
- 1:57:51Hall can swing away.
- 1:57:54Amelan working from the stretch takes something off the pitch and throws it away.
- 1:57:58One ball, two strikes. Hall looks down to Alex Sramas, the coach at third base.
- 1:58:06A chilly day in Cincinnati.
- 1:58:10The average of the 50 is supposed to be warmer but wetter tomorrow.
- 1:58:14One, two pitch and he puts something off that and Hall strikes out swinging.
- 1:58:20Two feet low.
- 1:58:30Rose, you had a great day yesterday. Hasn't had that good a day today.
- 1:58:33Half an hour in the hot on the close way in the first inning.
- 1:58:36He walks with the throw out, giving him a third and toss to the second base in the middle of the game.
- 1:58:42And they're going to put him on to get to the left hander, Joe Morgan.
- 1:58:53Some days you can go along and watch the baseball game and there are no real visible moves made by a manager.
- 1:58:59In any World Series game this year, you can come and you need to go fast.
- 1:59:05Hall three, he's the road.
- 1:59:13Amelan still expects the concessional not helping him into Hall four.
- 1:59:18The rose of the first, he's just going to check the two out and he's more than one to three on the base.
- 1:59:36The Reds trying to come back and make history. They drop their first two at home.
- 1:59:39They'd like to come back and win the series. Nobody has ever done that.
- 1:59:47He's ready and throws a strike to Morgan on the out front.
- 1:59:53Bobby Snowden swinging the bat on Dress.
- 2:00:02Amelan throws down the left field on the defender.
- 2:00:06He's just one more score. Rudy Hall to pick it up. Here's the third base. And going in on safe, he's two goals.
- 2:00:17The ball is being acquired. It's four to one for the Natties.
- 2:00:36Here's Amelan, Bobby Holden, the runner's expecting a third.
- 2:00:41Zero, two out.
- 2:00:53Holden continues to work.
- 2:00:57Here's Holden, get on. I'm sure we will see him against Johnny Benz.
- 2:01:01He's coming out on deck. Holden drives abundantly on and misses.
- 2:01:06Dick Williams just yelled out of the background before that pitch to the first base side and reminded them that they're going right to front with two yards.
- 2:01:16Bando is in ahead of the bag. Rose's uniform's fairly dirty after the headlong slide.
- 2:01:21Heading down and there's a big touch on a fastball from Amelan with strike two.
- 2:01:28The Natties are conceding on three to the left. And all the Natties stole second base.
- 2:01:34Well, they put Rose on and then Morgan thrust them up, went off at the field, line drive single to score one.
- 2:01:40Morgan went down to second on the third, Rambo paddled the plate. He'll two strikes to call it.
- 2:01:47What a game today has with Coen base. They're actually running again and they are winning.
- 2:02:05The Natties, Coen stands that back low high. Two strikes, bowled again off the fifth and back to the three.
- 2:02:20Four runs now on seven hits to Miller for the reds. One run, five hits and more for the eight. The way it looks now is a maddened winter tomorrow.
- 2:02:36Amelan is ready. Off the plate there, Coen's ready. That was a great game. Nothing on the pitch at all and Bobby was able simply to duck down under.
- 2:02:51Amelan takes something off there for the four, line drive. This just goes to the end. It's a good way to lose both and four and we've got the favorite margin by far.
- 2:03:06Moving off the hit, they're called in the three strike one and they're able to right it in the right field. And for the third game of the world, Coen has broken in two runs.
- 2:03:21It's 6-2 on Cimpermatti and here comes Dick Williams. And Gary's going to have to make the change again. Dave Hamilton got ahead of two left-handed batters in a row and then left the ball to the left-hander and got up a little bit.
- 2:03:38And a good home margin went the opposite way. Coen, quite in this series, has been able to hit the ball to right field off left-hand pitching. And the speed of Cimpermatti has really turned this thing around.
- 2:03:54They have been running almost at will throughout this entire series and just an hour or so at a second base, for instance in this inning, has been such the own going. And the batter has to play doing a pitchers.
- 2:04:08It was an easy strike out pitching. If they get the runner at second base and it was close, then the inning is gone. You've got to watch what Bobby told them around here now. They're leading by five runs.
- 2:04:19And he might take off again. Shere Harlan's a veteran. He's been around a long time. He has the unusual distinction of having been in three different kinds of World Series.
- 2:04:31As a kid, he was in the Pony League World Series with a pitcher for a Texas team around San Antonio, his home. Then as a collegiate, a senior at Oklahoma State University, near Oklahoma A&M, he pitched in the National Collegiate Championship World Series at Omaha and was a winning pitcher in the winning game.
- 2:04:48And now here he is, of course, the key to the last time, dreaming of pitching in a World Series, and he inherits the situation, and I'm sure he didn't include in those dreams.
- 2:04:57Amel and Woodchip two-thirds of an inning, three runs, three hits, just like out of the walks. Bobby told them what found out as Harlan warmed up.
- 2:05:07Major Martin Mikey's first World Series appearance here in the 1972 series. As all of them warmed up, Clark E. Anderson, Ted Kvizhuk, Paul Coleman, all first-rate, yelped to shake his hand.
- 2:05:21He walked to the dugout. It took to us. Bobby told them, as Major Ed Dorley's last league game, two RBIs in each of them.
- 2:05:32And now, the Cincinnati Picking Staff knows with this five-run ball, the tie or winning run can never come to the plate.
- 2:05:40That's the present rate here of five-run deficit. That makes throwing the ball a little bit easier.
- 2:05:46And you know, you can throw it this way, 11-hitter, you've got a big ball.
- 2:05:51The dugout is going on its first base and he's on his way. Now, it's just me and Brock Hemmett to get this. They took a big lead that time. And then comes back.
- 2:06:03Coleman's elevation was thick. He is four to five in elevation. Some kind of two.
- 2:06:12Now he's going for real and it's a wild kick. Down the second base he goes.
- 2:06:20He's all the way, shooting by Tennyson. Donnelly's down easy.
- 2:06:26Not a stolen base. It's a wild kick.
- 2:06:34He had a great jump on Donnelly. But the signal we get from the first watch to our left, wild kick.
- 2:06:42Now, it's a channel two and oral. Johnny has a line drive and then going to put him on again for the second time in a row.
- 2:06:52And he's all the way over.
- 2:06:58Now, the likes of Lutton are in a mess. And I've given Donnelly another stolen base. They're two to two.
- 2:07:13And there's wild board events. We're lined out on the first home run of the board and the sensors have been locked quite intensively.
- 2:07:20And here comes Flair.
- 2:07:29Perez is driven in here first.
- 2:07:32Run in the three, back in the six inning.
- 2:07:37Six to one. All of this was two out. All in throws. Waking pitch, gets away from Tennyson. Donnelly's move up.
- 2:07:54Wild pitch. Back to the second.
- 2:08:00And the ball is out. The ball is long away. This one bounced in front of the plate. The other one was under the glove of Tennyson.
- 2:08:07And the others move up.
- 2:08:11Over in Detroit in that big game number four in late inning, Victor Ennis. Joe's curveball broke off for a wild pitch. It really hurt.
- 2:08:19So much coming home of curveball. This is upside.
- 2:08:24The Reds are really running now. I'm trying to intimidate.
- 2:08:30The A's won a five-one lead in this game, but there's tomorrow. And if they can get the A's off balance and shaky about their great base running, that's quite a match to take them into the deciding game.
- 2:08:40Another breaking pitch. And that's a swinging strike for Perez.
- 2:08:45The ball's one strike.
- 2:08:49And this exciting game yesterday, with the A's and the top of the ninth and the bottom of the ninth, kicked themselves right out of a possible win.
- 2:08:56And this today was the Reds running wild on the base of my second base. The bottom of the game tomorrow.
- 2:09:01Another pitch. It's in the dirt. The one when he moves up. Kind of keeping it going. Curveball and a one goes into the dirt.
- 2:09:10If all of them had been breaking on that pitch, he would have scored easily.
- 2:09:15It's three and one to Perez. With six to one to score in the last of the seventh.
- 2:09:23The first five World Series games have been one-one to Fischer.
- 2:09:38And the first one to stand looks close. It's his outside ball for a face is loaded.
- 2:09:48For the first time today, Geronimo will come up.
- 2:09:53Defensive replacement, Geronimo is two for fifteen and Hick Williams runs out.
- 2:09:57Nobody's in the ball pit. He'll save the folks down there for tomorrow, but Williams comes out.
- 2:10:02It's 12-0 to KGW Portland.
- 2:10:15You don't have to give up good taste to save on calories. Diet rice cola tastes so good, everybody likes it.
- 2:10:37On your mark with Jim Simpson and game number six of the World Series. A raise in the driver's seat, six to one.
- 2:10:45Geronimo steps in. Three runs for Nick Hinnings. High as the series highs.
- 2:10:50And it's a three-run home yesterday, just hear that.
- 2:10:53Geronimo's a nice man to pass. That's the ball went inside and a throwback to Fairface.
- 2:10:59Now, Colin is claiming that Mel is trying to serve his hand or trying to muscle him off the back to get that in the mouth.
- 2:11:09We've not been able to say in any inning of this year's 1972 World Series that this is the nice man to bat in an inning.
- 2:11:15Far away the biggest inning in terms of men going to bat.
- 2:11:19Faces are loaded and the stick is inside. Whoa! It's two-0.
- 2:11:24This wind just turns away.
- 2:11:30In the back out.
- 2:11:34Paul Rosemarie is looking away. The honor of the age.
- 2:11:40More than ready.
- 2:11:42Braking, hits, travel, up the line and a slow runner.
- 2:11:45Here comes Colvin in.
- 2:11:47Hes about his way. And is in. And he takes you on.
- 2:11:52The last half of the second, Geronimo.
- 2:11:55Off with the field base hit.
- 2:12:13Joe Harlan has been guilty of point throwing the ball by the catcher.
- 2:12:23The walking man giving up a base hit.
- 2:12:26And the pips man up, Nekki, who fouled out the fast inning is up again and takes a breaking pitch down low.
- 2:12:34The last is down at second. Geronimo on it first.
- 2:12:38And looks now as though we are going to tomorrow and the 7th of the starting game.
- 2:12:43Draw it down the left field line, hooking it down and into the seat.
- 2:12:47Just in back of the age bullpen where there's absolutely no activity at all.
- 2:12:54They'll save everybody for tomorrow.
- 2:12:57I would imagine, Ronnie, wherever they're looking around this country, around the world, they're making plans tomorrow to join us at 12.45 Eastern Time because that's it.
- 2:13:05And as it just as it was in game number five of the American Playoffs series, John Odom will be handed the ball and say the season is yours.
- 2:13:13And Jack Billingham who did such a great job will go for the win.
- 2:13:17Billingham was the third of the opener out in open.
- 2:13:21And by the way, we'll remind you again, we could have some lane problems tomorrow. Lanes, towers are expected.
- 2:13:28On ball one strike, one and throws, Jeff Smith is there. Making steps this way.
- 2:13:36Biggest inning of the 1972 World Series. Five runs, ten men go to bat.
- 2:13:45Breaking pitch, half an hour. As it handcuff him throws on the first base and gets to man.
- 2:13:51From the ten men go to bat. Five runs scored on four base hits. No airs and two passes. The end of seven is it's Jelon Pizzarati.
- 2:14:00Hi, Johnny Betts, not catching, but picking for Anko windshield wipers.
- 2:14:04Do you know who holds the major league record for most strikeouts?
- 2:14:07Brace yourself. It is Mickey Mantle with 1,710.
- 2:14:12Of course, Mickey also hit 536 home runs which makes up for those strikeouts.
- 2:14:16That's where batters differ from windshield wipers.
- 2:14:19Wipers should bat 1,000 every time. In bad weather, snow or rain, your life or your family's life may depend on them.
- 2:14:27If your wipers are streaking or blurring, they're striking out and you had better bring on some new heavy hitters.
- 2:14:32Like a new set of Anko windshield wiper blades and you'll see the difference the first time they come up for action.
- 2:14:38Anko blades are made of pure rubber and are engineered especially for your car's windshield.
- 2:14:43You can get Anko blades or refills at most service stations everywhere.
- 2:14:47Look for the bright yellow Anko service cabinet. It holds a complete lineup of Anko wipers for every car.
- 2:14:53The M-Force, too. But be sure you're getting Anko windshield wipers.
- 2:14:57The big league blade by Anderson.
- 2:15:02Well, we say hitting is a finger-movementum when one or two men get started in a club that's in a slump.
- 2:15:07It can really turn everybody on, particularly in a home park with some 50,000 cheering.
- 2:15:12And that's exactly what happened here today.
- 2:15:14The Reds got the nickel charge today from Johnny Bench who had not hit the ball long in this entire series.
- 2:15:20And he jacked one up into the Luxfield fans to give them an early lead.
- 2:15:25The Yays, however, came back to try the ball game and have not been able to score since.
- 2:15:30After a fine release at the game of Cincinnati, the Reds lead four ball and now all.
- 2:15:35The Yays, when they lost Dale Noles right before the playoff started, knew they were going to have trouble in the bullpen.
- 2:15:42And they were hoping for a complete game in a series out of such as Capsaic Hunter and John Odom and Vita Blue as he started here today.
- 2:15:50Dick Williams was in strong hopes that Blue might be able to carry it on in.
- 2:15:55Vita was not fixing all that badly here today, but the Yays were not scoring because Nolan, who was the most ineffective pitcher so far for Cincinnati, got out of it without being hurt too badly.
- 2:16:06It is now Cincinnati leading 8-2 on as we go to the top of the eighth inning, Jensen. And the top of the batting order, Monte,
- 2:16:12Campanella to his 3-4-23 in the series and he is 0-4 his last 15 appearances.
- 2:16:20Tom Hall throws a strike to him making it.
- 2:16:24And on the grass knowing that Campanella wants to get his way on, there's Big Seven Ronsay got to get.
- 2:16:32All those deacon throw strikes. This one's in the ditch. Ball one, one, ball one strike.
- 2:16:40Nobody in the red bullpen is sparky hopes that he'll never have to put anybody down there. Pave them for tomorrow.
- 2:16:46Hall can work leisurely now, throws the pitch off speed to a pass, Mackey. There's Concepcion and what a pull from shortstop. He got it.
- 2:16:59That shows that the day Concepcion has got quite an arm. Ball about to pass Mackey. Concepcion was deep at shortstop, came up and then the throw.
- 2:17:06And Campanella, remember, not slow, he's very fast. Here's the loose with one for 20 in the series. Has not hit the ball hard at all today.
- 2:17:15He retires twice by Morgan at second. Mr. Muddaball, there's Schud like field. High and away with an off-speed breaking pitch by Hall.
- 2:17:23Ball one. We are in the eighth. The reds lead the sixth game, eight to one. Looks like we go to the clincher tomorrow.
- 2:17:33All back. Line drive on one hop. Concepcion by second fires and has the speedy aloo. The great ball fires. The shortstop of the rim.
- 2:17:47Following up Joe Rudy. By the right, left and single to left.
- 2:17:57Well, this was a one-nothing ball game, six and ninety in the fourth. Tied in the fifth at one. Reds went ahead in the fifth, two to one.
- 2:18:05Reds get ahead in the sixth, three to one and got five in the big seven to make it eight to one. Rudy is five for 20 in the series.
- 2:18:16All throws and here's another five. All coming back for the Kimani and hit right in front of it. We've already gotten one today.
- 2:18:24That was nearly a second. I don't do to my right too well out of these boots.
- 2:18:32Remarkably wins today. The CKM beer of the Jumbo Four Seals. A labor to win two games in the one series and a second to win consecutive games.
- 2:18:43Drive to right field. Bobby's holding over very quickly. Joyous speed in the halls.
- 2:18:47It's a five-go on Zip-to-error. He's armed with the middle of the eighth inning and the reds have the commanding eight to one lead.
- 2:18:58Hey, are you one of those guys who turns into a rough neck every morning? The shaving leaves your neck rough and irritated?
- 2:19:05If it does, let me tell you about a special kind that you're left holding.
- 2:19:08Face Saver specially made for you rough neck. Face Saver has 25% more lubricant than any other foamy jade green.
- 2:19:16For better protection against shaving irritation even on the most sensitive part of your face, your neck.
- 2:19:22So if shaving irritates your neck, get Foamy Face Saver or the Rough Neck.
- 2:19:29Do you believe an anti-push one can smell just like a crisp clear fall rain? Probably not, but there's a new one that comes pretty close.
- 2:19:36It's Right Guard Natural Scent Anti-Push Lint and it smells fresh and clean because the scent's made from real natural ingredients.
- 2:19:44About as far from the heavy artificial smells of other anti-push lints that you can get.
- 2:19:48And it's Right Guard so your normal helps keep you dry all day.
- 2:19:52Right Guard Natural Scent, not exactly the scent of an autumn day, but about as natural as an anti-push lint can get.
- 2:20:00Well, Joe Horland, pictures here in the last half of game number eight, the fifth and anti-risk.
- 2:20:08Finally showing their quantity of speed, they got the men on base and just the great momentum they generated got the big base hit.
- 2:20:15And they are well out in front of the Oakland A's and let's suggest we're going to have a big game number seven here tomorrow.
- 2:20:20And Jesse Arnott was born for two, drove in on number five with a sacrifice line drive at deep center.
- 2:20:26Single and short on number seven and in the Oakland A's, two fine throws from shortstop.
- 2:20:31That's the breaking distance Horland strike one.
- 2:20:34Jesse Arnott will be followed by Pitcher Tom Hall who kneels on deck.
- 2:20:42Horland back and throws the big curve at Jim Saatch as Jesse Arnott leans back away from it.
- 2:20:47That's the Bando and Manuel scheduled in the A's night with a tough roll to hold.
- 2:20:53Seven runs.
- 2:20:55Horland throws another breaking pitch inside.
- 2:20:58Devolved one strike to concept young.
- 2:21:01Dillingham and Odom, tomorrow's starters, both are light-handers.
- 2:21:09Two on count, fastball and he swings and misses, strikes two, two balls, two strikes.
- 2:21:18Well this started out, World Series, A's winning two here, then out in Oakland.
- 2:21:25The visitors were able to one two out of three and today back home,
- 2:21:29the situation is a tie that three games a season.
- 2:21:32Five left field, back throws Woody, near the wall and bounce off the wall and passing it.
- 2:21:37And concept young steams for the second base.
- 2:21:39He's going to try for third if Woody hasn't run to the ball yet.
- 2:21:42Now comes up and doesn't make the throw.
- 2:21:44And in with the tibble.
- 2:21:47Woody went to the wall and it simply bounced and passed it.
- 2:21:57I think you would have to say that this is not the day of the Oakland I've Loved.
- 2:22:02The pitching has not been that effective.
- 2:22:05Their offense has generated but one run and defensively they have had problems.
- 2:22:13Only one error shows but they must have had a couple of balls in the outfield.
- 2:22:18Here's Hall and he's swinging away with the set yard serve.
- 2:22:25The end field of the A's has been drawn in.
- 2:22:31Hall's swinging, any kind of ground ball at all might get through.
- 2:22:38And this is the chest foul off the back of home plate.
- 2:22:47Well last night not many people got sleep because they had to climb from the west coast.
- 2:22:51We got in very early this morning.
- 2:22:52Tonight not many people get sleep.
- 2:22:54They're going to be worried about tomorrow.
- 2:22:56Here's a two-side count foul tipped off the master center.
- 2:23:02One thing that woke up the red bats.
- 2:23:06That's right.
- 2:23:12Two strikes.
- 2:23:17Hall just swinging that bat now away so they're all in pitch.
- 2:23:20It's the curve ball live to the first base for F.T.
- 2:23:23What a help.
- 2:23:25He called that ball and F.T. had to make a wide lead to get the robin overhead.
- 2:23:31Here's Pete Low.
- 2:23:33He's in the second base today but he's pulled around and it's a lost life.
- 2:23:41Rose awakened the red yesterday.
- 2:23:45They were down three games to one and he let off that ball game with a home run.
- 2:23:49The reds were in the ball game.
- 2:23:50Then he drove in the winning run in the ninth inning to make it three games to two.
- 2:23:54Here they are about to fire two juries.
- 2:23:58Breaking pitch, curve ball, strike one to Rose.
- 2:24:05Another seven game world series.
- 2:24:10Strike one to another breaking pitch.
- 2:24:13Get to the outside corner.
- 2:24:14Two strikes to Pete Low.
- 2:24:18One out, concepts young, two over to the base.
- 2:24:23I'm not quite sure what Rose will do is get on the artificial turf in front of the back of third.
- 2:24:31He took the flag and struck out and concepts young dives back to third base,
- 2:24:35expecting a throw but it was up.
- 2:24:41Here is Morgan.
- 2:24:43He really got things going back in the seventh inning.
- 2:24:47They want Rose to get to Morgan because he's a left-hander batter.
- 2:24:51Morgan gets the left-hander to take the hammer of that time but he lined it off at the field.
- 2:24:56They scored a couple of runs and he went to second on the throw and later scored on the base hit.
- 2:25:04Now the pitchers.
- 2:25:05This is from the 12th left.
- 2:25:06These are honestly so short of covering and they are out of the inning.
- 2:25:09The runs one hit, no errors and concepts young are crossing home plate but the run of course does not count.
- 2:25:15Well, the A's have one more chance.
- 2:25:17We go to the top of the ninth, sixth and eighth.
- 2:25:23Let me tell you about some products I sell very proudly.
- 2:25:27Chrysler's and Plymouth's.
- 2:25:30You know why I love them?
- 2:25:31They are constantly striving to make stronger cars, safer cars, better cars that run better than any they have ever built.
- 2:25:41They all have something in common too.
- 2:25:44Engineering care.
- 2:25:46It goes into every Chrysler and every Plymouth.
- 2:25:50That new mid-sized satellite, C-Bring Plus for instance, that's some car.
- 2:25:55And they tell me the new Chrysler is the quietest Chrysler ever.
- 2:26:00And the new Plymouth Fury.
- 2:26:02Wow, there's a beautiful car.
- 2:26:05And part of the beauty of it is the way it fights rust and corrosion with all sorts of rust preventatives.
- 2:26:12See these new Chrysler's and Plymouth.
- 2:26:14That's your Chrysler Plymouth dealer, won't you?
- 2:26:18Chrysler Plymouth.
- 2:26:20Extra care in engineering.
- 2:26:21It makes a difference.
- 2:26:25In Cincinnati, Marty Moore with Jim Simpson.
- 2:26:28And the story's eight to one.
- 2:26:30The Reds have 10 base hits.
- 2:26:31The A's have five.
- 2:26:32And Mike Epstein has just made a fine defensive play.
- 2:26:36The end that last half inning comes around to try to get something going for the A's.
- 2:26:40They have a long road to hold this day in the cotton fields.
- 2:26:43Epstein has a long road to hold.
- 2:26:45He is over 15.
- 2:26:46He struck out twice swinging today and down the road.
- 2:26:48And all the left-handers facing Epstein the left-hander.
- 2:26:51First pitch is outside, ball one.
- 2:26:53Again tomorrow, Jack Billingham for the Reds.
- 2:26:55Blue Moon Oldham for the A's.
- 2:26:57And then everybody else available.
- 2:27:01Now the final game of the season, that's for sure.
- 2:27:03There goes the bat and the ball to the right side.
- 2:27:05The ball is fair.
- 2:27:06The bat is foul.
- 2:27:07And the ball is what counts until Epstein is out.
- 2:27:10First pitch at the ball and steps on first base.
- 2:27:16Now Mike goes back to thinking about tomorrow's seventh and final game of the series,
- 2:27:19realizing that he has not had a base hit in 16 official trips to the plate.
- 2:27:24And today he struck out twice and drowned at the full air flight.
- 2:27:29The Reds are two outs away from swearing the series.
- 2:27:32Here is Bando who has two base hits, scored the only run and has fouled out.
- 2:27:37Next one, foul, Reds comes over, says he's got it and has a fair of two outs.
- 2:27:43The Reds are an out away.
- 2:27:47One swearing the series at three games a week after losing the first two here at home.
- 2:27:56Games like this, you remember what happened yesterday in the ninth
- 2:27:59when feeling judgment on the thought of Raleigh Fingers allowed the Reds to stay in the ball game in the ninth
- 2:28:06and go ahead and score the go-ahead run.
- 2:28:08And then when Odom tried to score from third base in the last of the night
- 2:28:12with a time run he was thrown out on the ball.
- 2:28:14It was hot-fied Justin back to first base.
- 2:28:17Those decisions, plus today's 8-1 ball game, will send us through seventh game.
- 2:28:24And well, who is 1-3 takes the strike at the knees.
- 2:28:33Many of the Cincinnati fans are beginning to leave, thinking they'll come back tomorrow for the finale.
- 2:28:38There's a ball punched down the right field line and it is a fair ball.
- 2:28:42Mangrelle is on her way around first and stops right there as Geronimo is over the corner and up very quickly.
- 2:28:48And with two outs and turning 8-1 in the ninth, that is not the time to take a chance.
- 2:28:54Mangrelle simply held up his first base hit.
- 2:28:58The first base hit off Tom Wall.
- 2:29:02And he has retired six men in a row.
- 2:29:05Here's Gene Tennis.
- 2:29:08All for three today, Bill Coleman very deep in the fifth inning with his best blast of the day.
- 2:29:17Tennis takes the pitch high from Tom Wall, ball one.
- 2:29:22Every time this man steps up you've got to wonder whether or not he's going to set a World Series record hitting a fifth on one.
- 2:29:31Pitch is on the outside corner, good fast ball from Hall.
- 2:29:34Strike one, one ball, one strike.
- 2:29:40Low 45 Eastern, John Dremar with the Sevilleton's punching game on NBC Radio.
- 2:29:46And there's a change that stays high.
- 2:29:49Pitch two balls, one strike to Gene Tennis.
- 2:29:55As Gene Tennis has seven RBI's, Coleman in the last three games has picked up six.
- 2:30:02Look at this.
- 2:30:05Already, cocked up, foul, bench comes back.
- 2:30:08It'll be too far back if John holds onto that mask as the ball does into the seat.
- 2:30:19Well, the American and National League have alternated the World Series championships since 1965.
- 2:30:27And last year it was the Pirates who won.
- 2:30:32The ball's two strikes.
- 2:30:34Manuel Vey shall beat our first base, not being held there.
- 2:30:37Ground ball up the middle, finally flagged down by conceptually the cat, Manuel steps it second.
- 2:30:43And the A's are still alive as Tennis gets the base hit.
- 2:30:50Now Ted Kubiak will come up for the first time.
- 2:30:54Kubiak, a late inning replacement, has been in three ball games but only about twice as an infield hit.
- 2:31:04Kubiak, a quick hitter, gets to the right side to face the left-hander Tom Hall.
- 2:31:088-2 on the score since Matty went in the ninth inning.
- 2:31:12Also, the strike right down the middle.
- 2:31:17A good release pitcher does when he's got this big a lead, he simply fires strikes.
- 2:31:21Dare him to hit it. Somebody will catch it someday.
- 2:31:25Back again with a swinging strike this time and Kubiak is down 0-2.
- 2:31:35All of the new baseball, Manuel is second. Tennis is first.
- 2:31:48Tom Hall, dear Jim, dear Fackett, Manuel is second.
- 2:31:51Now throws and there's the ground ball to third base.
- 2:31:53Manky will step on third.
- 2:31:56Ball game is over.
- 2:31:58The final three games to one have evened the ball in this inning.
- 2:32:11No runs to it, no errors and two men left.
- 2:32:14The final score is the sixth game of the World Series Cincinnati 8 Open Walk.
