- 0:06SPEAKER_02: Hi guys, welcome back to Mother Episode Anarchy.
- 0:09SPEAKER_02: This is your host, Ecta, and I have such special guests today.
- 0:13SPEAKER_02: I am so excited.
- 0:15SPEAKER_02: I have been waiting for the launch of this brand for I think about a year now, it feels, or probably actually a full year.
- 0:21SPEAKER_02: And I am just so thrilled to be hosting both co-founders here.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: And I know one of them we've had on the show before, so you might recognize her.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: Um, but without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to Elise Tabin, who's been on the show before, and her daughter, Maddie Minton.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the show, you guys.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Um, so excited.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: And they're the co-founders of Twish, by the way.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, so welcome to the show.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for having us.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: We're really excited.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm really excited to host you, and I'm excited for Twish to come out.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: It's such an innovative new concept.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: And I think that skincare for teenagers, as we all know, there's like such a need in this area, and I'm just so thrilled to see you doing this.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: And I can't wait to learn about it.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: But I would love for you guys to get us started.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Maddie, maybe you can start us off, or at least whoever wants to begin, and let us know like what inspired the line.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Like, where where did the vision come from?
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Um, I think the vision for the line came when during COVID I was breaking out a lot, and there really was nothing that was like targeted towards my age that met and used that I also liked and like looked cool.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: And obviously, my mom gave me a bunch of products, but nothing like all stuff that she would use, and nothing that I really wanted, and also things that could be too harsh and damaging for the skin.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, really taking care of her skin either.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: So we kind of had to start from like the beginning, and I had to teach her a little bit about the basics of like why you want to wash your face and products even on right, like what exactly what is a skincare product and why something sitting on a shelf, it may or may not work for you.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: So, you know, growing up as the daughter of a beauty editor, Maddie has been lucky enough to see a lot of different products, but didn't really take any interest in it until she herself started to hit puberty and see the changes in her skin.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And that's kind of when like the light bulb went off when we were just stuck.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: We're like, we can't find anything.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Right, she's right.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: We were sitting in my dermatologist's office, and I had taken her for an appointment, and we had a whole conversation and like we walked out, look at each other, kind of like, okay, so now you know, like what we star.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: And um, for years, people have asked me because my background is in editorial and and writing and beauty industry, like, why haven't you made a line?
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: But I always felt there's really not another need for a skincare line for somebody who's, you know, my age, I'm 45 on Monday.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: And I just felt like, why do I need to do that?
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: But when I saw that she was at this crossroads and kind of confused, and I don't know what to use, I don't know how to take care of my skin.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: And do I need a cleanser and a toner or just a toner?
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: And what about a sheet mask?
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: And where do all these things kind of fit in?
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: I was like, I think that this is where I need to step in, use my expertise.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And I tapped into her, like no other, and all of her friends, and we just kept on getting like the ideas rolling and the ball going, and yeah, the whole idea kind of came to be.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: That's I mean, honestly, though, that's so true what you guys said, because every time I go to Sephora, all I see is like anti-aging and wrinkle cream and you know, like eye cream.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, well, what about like everybody else that doesn't even have signs of aging yet?
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: So it's it makes sense.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: Like, there's no there's no line that I know of that's really geared towards, you know, Maddie, your age group.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: Like there's really nothing out there.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: So it's it's actually concerning, especially from like if you look at it from like the dermatology standpoint.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: Like I remember being, you know, at least Maddie's age, like and uh when we were going to the dermatologist, you know, back then, and back then it was like Accutane, like that's it, you know, they had no options for us at all.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: So I feel like we haven't gotten that far.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: So this is really exciting that you guys are doing this.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: And I think the nice thing about it is that with Twish and with teenagers, it it doesn't mean that because you might be having the first signs of a breakout, or maybe your skin's a little oily, or you kind of just don't know where to begin, that you have to go all the way full-fledged to like the Acutanes of the world, and you have to, you know, go to the deep end of the pool.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: You can tiptoe your way in and experiment and find what you like and what formulations you like.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Like Madison, for example, likes you you can tell exa some of the types of formulations you like.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what are your favorites, Madison?
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: I like gel cleansers, um I like serums a lot, yeah, moisturizers, like jelly, not too thick, but right, like a like a light, like a water creamish texture, is that what right?
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, is that for somebody who doesn't know anything about skincare, they can kind of figure out, you know, what do they like?
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Do they like something that's fragrance?
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Do they like something that's lightweight and watery?
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Do they like something heavier?
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Do they like a mask that's got a clay in it?
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: So they can really kind of figure out before having to even go to the dermatologist.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: And hopefully we can help them enough that they don't have to go straight to an antibiotic or an acutane or a high dose um, you know, glindamycin or whatever it might be, retinol, um, that they can kind of, like I said, tiptoe their way into skincare and see what it is that they personally like and then kind of adjust and you know, re-jigger as necessary.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: That's yeah, no, that's a really brilliant, brilliant concept because frankly speaking, like what Maddie explained, like her favorites, I always see people like there's always like two types of consumers, I feel like the ones that really love the heavy stuff.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: And I think that's more like in our age bracket, right?
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: At least like it's like we love the night creams and we love the, you know, that kind of stuff, but then you don't have enough of the lighter stuff, you know, there's not enough options out there.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: So I can definitely see, you know, if I was to go back and like put myself in Maddie's shoes now, right?
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: Looking at the market, I'd be like, yeah, where are the water creams?
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: Where are the light serums?
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Where are the you know, really fun cleansers?
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: And there's not enough out there.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: So this is really cool.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: Now, I want to know though, I know you guys uh partnered up with a Harvard-trained uh scientist for this.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: Um, could you maybe explain a little bit in Style and you know, take us down the science journey of like how that was, like creating the brand from the scientific standpoint?
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: So yeah, we have a Harvard-trained chemist who we worked extremely closely with on all the formulations, um, were very much involved in every single thing.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: I unfortunately um had a few bad incidences before I found our current manufacturer and um cosmetic chemists that we're working with, where we were getting samples back that weren't according to my specifications and using the right ingredients, and they just didn't feel right.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: We were testing them out.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: We're like, it's it's not working, it's like leaving too much of a film on the skin.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: This is the opposite of what I'm trying to do.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: It was a little bit of a um uphill battle to find the right partner, but once we did and we knew that we had our perfect match for somebody who understood what we were trying to create and could actually create them um in the manner that we wanted to deliver the products with the efficacy and the ingredients, we really sat down and said, okay, now let's talk about what we want in these products so that they work and that people can see results.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Because at the end of the day, when you're using products that are targeted towards pimples and oil, overproductive oil um glands and things of that nature, you want to see some sort of result, right?
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: And the the first ingredient that came to mind for me was silver, because I have always been a huge fan of silver as a wound healing agent and also um in skincare.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: And it's been around forever.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: It's nothing new, but it's not something that you find in a lot of brands because, like everything else, you know, I mean, things are cyclical.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Like, and there might be an ingredient that all of a sudden comes back into trends that was popular 10 years ago, 15 years ago.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, retinol is the biggest thing since sliced bread, but retinol has been around forever, and retinol has like had its comeback moments, you know.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: So hopefully that happens with silver.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: But the reason why we really wanted to use it, and Maddie, you can speak to that in a minute, is because I find it to be one of those like do-it-all ingredients.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: And back when I was an editor at New Beauty, my editor in chief and I used to rave about silver, and we used to put it on like every skin ailment bug bites, rashes, razor burns, ingrown hairs, pimples, cuts.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: And the two of us were like, this stuff is, and I'm talking like years and years ago.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Like, we're like, this stuff is amazing.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Like, and we tell each other, like, can you believe that I put this on my pimple and it's half the size come morning, or the redness came out?
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: And so it kind of was one of those ingredients.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: And I would always said, if I were to make a line, that that was an ingredient that I wanted to include because I just thought it was so cool and so underrated.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: And then um, you know, in terms of some of the more like tried and true acne ingredients, you know, you have like your mainstays, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retinol, and and and and you know, and others.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: But when when I was talking and working with all the formulations through with the chemist, and we were working on creating combinations, you know, one of the things that we were using that Madison, I'll let her talk to this in a second, yeah, tends to do tend to do really well with was salicylic acid um as well for her breakouts and her spots.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, Madison, I I would love to hear your take on that because I feel like salic acid does work as well on like um, you know, uh for me, it worked when I was younger.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: It like I now I'm like into other stuff, but like I would love to hear like when you realized, you know, um what was working for your for your breakouts and stuff.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so probably a few months after we had like just started taking care of my skin, um we started experimenting with different products, and you notice that like the salicylic acid and the silver together really helps, um, and not really dried out my skin, even though it could, it didn't really, and it helped get rid of the pimples that I was having and um reduce redness.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: So it really started to work, and those are two of the ingredients that we have in the spot treatment because it just works so well together.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: Did you have like an aha moment though?
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Like where you went to your mom and you were like, Mom, I think this is like this is working for me, or did you did at least did you have to point it out to her, like, oh no, this has silver in it?
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't remember if she knew that it was like the combination, but we were kind of like doing a little bit of the salicylic acid, and then you know, we'd put like sometimes in the same setting, sometimes it would be a couple hours later, sometimes it'd be a day later.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: We're kind of playing around with things.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: It'd be like, oh, we put a little bit of silver on so that just you know, we can see how this helped seal it.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: And we started just like like kind of like mixing it together, and like I don't know, it just it was just like this like okay, we're gonna take a drop of this one, we're gonna take a drop of this, and we're gonna mix it together on our fingers.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: But it's all in like, let's see what happens.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: And she was like, Okay, like it's it went away the next day, or it's half the size, and it never got to because Madison's skin is also pretty dry.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: Um, okay, okay.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: So she never really got to the point where it was like, you know, like flaking, or like sometimes with some of these ingredients, especially the the activist, you can get that when you're introducing them into your routine.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Um, especially if you're something new to them, you can get like the redness and the flaking and the peeling and all that.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: But when we were doing this combination approach, I mean it really started to work.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: None of it wow, right.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: She wasn't side.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: So we were like, This this is kind of working.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Like, what what's up, you know?
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: No, that's amazing, though.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: That's like the best feeling in the world.
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: And honestly, I wanted to say, like, I feel like now, like you said, Elise, like we're living in this world where everyone's talking about ingredients, right?
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: But like, so I never hear silver come up ever.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: Like, and I agree with you.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: Silver is so good for your for anything, really, any wound healing.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Um, we learned about in medical school, like way back, you know, and it was like briefly mentioned, but like I remember, um, you know, just from a science perspective, I remember learning about has antimicrobial properties.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: It's great for like, you know, preventing bacteria from like colonizing an area.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Like, they're just it's just good for so many things.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: And I'm surprised, especially because it's also anti-inflammatory, that we don't hear about it more because we're always hearing about, like you said, retinol or niacinamide or whatever, you know, all these ingredients.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: So it's definitely, I feel like, that that diamond, you know, that we never really we're not exposed to as consumers.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: So I love that you guys, yeah.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: And I feel like there have been products, some great products that are out there that have it.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Definitely not within the teen skincare arena.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Um, more geared towards, you know, because it has so many benefits.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: So more geared towards um older skin.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: But I think that it's like you're saying, it's one of we're in one of those moments where everybody is focused on some of, and they're great ingredients, don't get me wrong, but everyone is focused on the same ones that are in every product niacinamide, retinol, hyaluronic acid, ceramides are big right now.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: But it's like it's like everything else, it's kind of like cyclical.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Like a lot of this stuff comes back.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, you can look at fashion, clothes, hair.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: I just wrote a story for in style about 80s haircuts.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, is this really happening?
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: And sure enough, it is.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: So a lot of the stuff that comes in, you know, goes out and then it comes back in.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: And um I think that that that might be the case with this.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: Hopefully I love I love what you said though.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: And I want to ask, um, you know, really about this idea of like, you know, when you guys discovered this, right, Madison, especially like um with your concerns and your skin, did you like immediately like tell your friends, like, what do your friends think about Twish?
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: I would love to hear some feedback that you've gotten just from your inner circle.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: So, all my friends that have used and tried Twish, they all like love it.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: They I think they also have the idea that it's made for them and people in the same age range, and it really works.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, I have a friend that's been using it for almost a month now.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: And her skin, she had pretty bad skin before, and it's almost her skin's really cleared up, and it just doesn't look as dull and dry anymore.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: And her breakouts have yeah, it's dramatically declined.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: Wow, that's amazing.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: The fun thing I get a kick out of it, I mean, because I'm looking at it from a different perspective than Madison, is when they see the packaging for the first time and they pick up the products and they notice a lot of the little details that we put into it, and they're like, wow, that's really cool.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, it tells you that that's how much like a pump is supposed to be, you know, like so the little things like that that I think that they're very responsive to.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: Um Right, right.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: No, I mean, I can see that though, because I feel like you know, when you're getting into skincare, part of it is like it's a journey, right?
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's still a journey for even like people our age at least, right?
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: Where we're still always a journey.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, always a journey.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: And I feel like when you're younger and you're just getting into skincare, you need someone to tell you like this is how much of a cleanser you use, this is how much a spot treatment uh, you know, you're supposed to be using.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: Those kind of things matter.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: And I wish we had that, you know, when we were growing up, because we didn't.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: I remember back in the day, you guys might have just created like the new wave of what Proactive was, you know, when we were younger, because I had terrible acne, you know, as a teenager.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: And I was like, there's nothing out here.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: And I remember at the time, it was like, you know, there were like two brands.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: Proactive was one of them.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: And I was using them and I I that feeling when you just see your acne clearing up, it's finally getting better.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: You can wear makeup, you know, like that's huge.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: And that's such a such a beautiful thing to like be able to create a brand that is doing that for teenagers because that's when we're learning the most about our skin.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: So I really applaud you guys for you know taking this on because it's it's huge that you're doing this.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's been a huge undertaking, but I do agree.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: I think, and and Madison can speak to this as well, that when you are in those teenage years and you're super impressionable and you start to you start to um be more cognizant of your hair and your skin and your clothing and just your overall appearance.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Um be able to have products that you resonate with, I think is is super helpful.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Um, and also to be able to have something that you know is marketed towards you.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: It's not marketed towards a 30-year-old, and you just happen to see it and you're like, oh, well, they're using it, therefore I should use it.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: So, you know, that was a lot of the reasoning behind it, too, was because she before we went on this whole skincare journey and started with you know the basics of let's wash our face every day, let's moisturize, let's get a facial when we need to.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: Madison was very confused.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: And a lot of the stuff that she was coming to me saying, Oh, this looks really good.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: I'm like, it is, but that's for that's not for your skin.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: That's for like mature skin.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: You don't want that just now.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: Like, you still have that fresh, plump baby skin that isn't damaged.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: So, like, don't don't worry about that stuff just yet.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: You know, exactly.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, exactly.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Let's just clean on a regular daily basis, get regular about using your spot treatments, your treatments that you need to do, moisturize, sunscreen.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: Like, let's just start with the basics from there.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: And then once we get a grip on that, we can, you know, elevate and move on as we need to.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: But that is kind of where I was like, there's nothing at that point that's just like, let's do the introductory, you know?
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: No, I I think that that is such a such a major point.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: And also like with washing your face, like I love that you guys are coming out with a cleanser being one of your first products because I kid you not, the amount of TikToks I see where people are still trying to explain to, you know, whether it's teenagers or anybody, hell, it could be anybody at our age, you know, um, that you have to wash your face.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: That still gets me every time I see it.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: So, like, it's awesome that you guys are coming out with this like cleanser and like spot treatment duo.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: And I would love to learn about the cleanser.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: I know um we were talking before the episode started and we were talking about the texture, but maybe um you could tell us a little bit about it, Madison.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: Um, maybe you could get us started about like what inspired the cleanser, you know, what were the things that led you to creating the way it is, like in terms of texture and stuff?
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: If you could tell us a story of that.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: So I think the reason the cleanser is like the jelly texture it is, is because uh teenagers really don't like they wanted something fun and something they like using and it's a fun texture and consistency.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: And I think it just uh almost like if you have something that you like, you're gonna want to use it more, which is gonna make your skin better and everything.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: So I think it was just the idea of making it uh um cool for teenagers to use, and it's also really important with a face wash or to just wash your face because a lot of people don't wash their face consistently, and it's like you wash your body in the shower, you wash your hair, it's like still part of your skin, and even washing your face like the right way, not um like using too much or too little, and not like after washing your face, not drying it like super roughly on a towel, it already um impacts how your cleanser works, which is like the most important, I think, part of your skincare.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I completely agree with you.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: That's I mean, that's huge.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: I remember like we had videos, right?
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: Like at least like two or three years ago about how how people pack their drays, you know, their face.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Like you shouldn't be like rubbing it and stuff.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: So I hear you.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: It can be confusing.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: And it's of it's, you know, it's it's step number one.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Like you can't do all these other steps and treatments and and all these things that everybody sees, everyone thinks that they have to do.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: But if you're not cleansing your skin is step number one, like you gotta start there.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: And when Madison wasn't washing her face like at all, or right, you were pretty irregular with it.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: But once you started implementing like a regular skincare routine just with the cleansing, I mean, how much of a change did you say?
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: Uh significant change.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: My skin started to like uh become more bright and less dull, and my pinkles started to clear up.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: And your forehead used to be pretty rough, and wow, it had a big change just from washing it.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: And this the face wash that I was using really wasn't even uh like a face wash that was like since there was really nothing targeted to me or something like liked using or like appealed to me, but just was using it basically because my mom told me that I should start using it to help better my skincare, and it really was nothing else.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: Isn't that crazy like to think about that?
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Like just like knowing that, like, you know, we have to wash our face properly.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: Like, I feel like teenagers, like that's uh again, you know, it goes back to that point we were talking about.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: Like, there's we people need direction, you know what I mean, at that age, especially.
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: So, like, that's I mean, it it might sound to us like, you know, now that we're older, like, okay, yes, we wash our face and that's our first step.
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: But like, I mean, at that age, like you need that guidance and you need somebody to tell you, like, this is the first step, this is the absolute first thing that you want to do for your skin.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: And it's absolutely okay, you know.
- 24:01SPEAKER_02: And also, I wanted to say, like, and it's a big question I have for you guys is like, um, you know, working together to create this brand.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: Because I think that one of the things I see from my standpoint as a consumer in this industry is there's not enough people who are actually going through the problem creating the products, you know what I mean?
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: Like, there's a bunch of people who don't experience, like, for example, like teenage acne, and they're talking about teenage acne, you know, like they're not, they've not, they're not experiencing it in the moment.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I mean, and that's where I want to ask.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, how was that?
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: Like working together, like, you know, um, you know, at least maybe you could tell us, like, you know, working with your daughter and and creating this, like from the visionary perspective, you know?
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean, I I think I've always been a big believer in that you have to, like you're saying, you have to kind of deal with the problem yourself to really understand it.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, it doesn't, it doesn't really resonate the same way and it doesn't click the same way.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Um, I've suffered from acne since I was Madison's age.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: I had it as a teenager, I had it as a young adult, I had it when I was pregnant with her, which was that was the worst it'd ever been my entire life because I couldn't use anything.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: My doctor was like nothing on your skin, so I had to just deal with it and I couldn't even try and treat it.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: Um, I dealt with it during multiple other parts of adulthood.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: I still break out, you know.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: I suffer from hormonal, hormonal acne.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Um, I do use the spot treatment, but my skin is also different because I'm much older than her.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: So I do need to use other um ingredients and different products along the way.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: But it's something I've always suffered with.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: I suffered with it way worse than she did, um slash does.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: You know, like she might get the occasional breakout right now, or she might have like a little cluster here and there, or if it's, you know, around that time of the month or whatever.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: But um, I think that to your point, if you don't have the experience yourself in dealing with it and knowing what works, how it makes you feel, what you have to go through to try and get clearance on a pimple, or for example, the type of pigmentation, that whole road that you have to go down.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: It's it's very hard to be able to understand how other people are dealing with those same problems if you're not experiencing it yourself.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: So that's that's kind of why when this whole skincare journey started with Madison and the whole idea came to be, I was like, well, yeah, I can speak to that, not only from a beauty editor standpoint and understanding skin and all the components that comprise acne, but because I've dealt with it myself.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: And I know what it's like to be 18 years old and have to pound on a ton of makeup because you don't want to be sitting in a freshman college writing class and people looking at you and being like, oh my God, that's the the girl that's got pimples.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: I used to be that person, you know.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: And what I've had to do along the way to get my skin to where it is, and I know that my skin is temperamental, and I know that, you know, no matter what I do to it, there's gonna be things that just are gonna throw it off balance because that's life.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: Um, that's just what happens.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: And skin's ever evolving, and there's a lot of things that you have to take into consideration that can make you break out, and you have to kind of take everything apart and be like, all right, am I getting enough sleep?
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: Am I eating something that's making it happen?
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: Am I under a lot of stress?
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: Am I not washing my face enough?
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: Am I using dirty towels that should have been washed two weeks ago?
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: You know, taking it and making it worse.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: Am I using something that's causing me to break out?
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: Like, there's a lot of um, like I guess picking apart the factors that go into trying to treat any type of skin condition, really, whether it's it's acne or something else.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, that's what that's where I feel like my background and where I really excel comes into play.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: Um, being a a beauty editor and a writer who has written about for close to 20 years aesthetics and beauty and skincare and all that.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I've lived it.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: I've lived it.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you've tried everything.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: You've tried everything.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: Like it's it that's the thing is like I love your, I love that you come are coming to this with this background, Elise, because you've literally tested every product out there.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: You know what's good.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, how many times have I gotten recommendations from you?
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: I literally watch your channel.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: I'm like, if Elise says it's good, it's good.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: Like there's no question, you know what I mean?
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: Like ever.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: I never doubt your recommendations because you know what works, and that's why I'm so excited that you guys have created this line because there are so many people that are gonna benefit from this.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: I I absolutely can't wait to see the reviews that just pour in because it this is a huge niche.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: It really is.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: And also, I saw, um, I'm I'm not gonna lie for everyone listening.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: Like, I literally like I'm every time you guys post a video, I watch all of your videos on TikTok.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: So, like, I know like Madison, you recently went to camp, and I was thinking, like, even when I saw that video, I was like, this is so cool! Like, you know, you have a skincare line that you know you can pack with your teenager's stuff that they're going to camp with.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: Like, this is so big.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: Like, we needed this for so long.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: And so I'm so so thrilled to see you guys have done this.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: And I yeah, I'm I'm just so excited to see what happens and how much it blows up because I know it will.
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, we sometimes I think she wants to kill me when she's like, Oh, are you really making me make a TikTok on Sunday at nine o'clock?
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: And I'm okay.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: But you know, I say to her, I'm like, this is this is our business, it's not just mine and it's yours too.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: And I take all of her feedback to heart.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, when we were designing the logo, we went through three designers, and when we had our second designer working on the logo, um, I showed it to Madison, and I think her exact response to me was meh.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I thought it was like a like a baby, like I don't know, like a company for like babies, like very oh she was like, no, no.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: And we went to the drawing board and we're we're like, we gotta nail this.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, we went through everything and I said, What do you like?
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: What do you don't like?
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: What colors?
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: And we came up with this cool concept.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, our bottles are different, they're not the standard squeeze tube.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Um, we use really cool, like I don't even know what the word is for them.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: How would you describe the bottles?
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: They're like circular, they're like even like circular, but like squatty and with like cool pumps and like the outer box too.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: Madison was really involved when you wanted to talk about that and what you wanted it to be.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: We want it to look like if you like saw it in a detail store that you would just like be attracted to and walk right over.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: I think that's exactly what it looks like.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: It's it's like super bright and holographic, and like oh high dye, a lot going on, but it looks cool, it all ties together really well.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: And I think I love that.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: I remember I made her do an exercise with me.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: I took her to Sephora one day, and I'm like, okay, just go in, don't look at what the actual product is, but just show me, let's walk over the things and show me what your eye is gravitating towards.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: And it was color and just like boxes, fonts that had like something different to them.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: And you know, we have a super, super talented um branding designer who we work with very, very closely out in LA, and she's been amazing, and she has just like nailed every single piece of our branding that we got the initial sketches back.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: We sat down at the I opened up my computer, we sat down at the dinner table.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: Madison, myself, and my husband, and I had already seen it, I didn't say a word.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: I opened up, and they were like, oh, and I'm like, Madison, and she's like, oh my god, it's that is so cool.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: No, your packaging is killer.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: I love your packaging.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: I think that the whole vibe is just so fun.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: It's so like anyone can drive with it.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Like, I feel like teenagers obviously are gonna love it, but even like when I saw it, I was just like, this is so fun.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: Like, I it reminds me of like the 70s, like almost, like in a way, you know, it's like super fun, flower power kind of, like in a way.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: And I was like, I'm here for it.
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: I love the packaging, I love the design, the colors.
- 32:41SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm the same way as you, by the way, uh Madison.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: I gravitate towards all the colorful things as well.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: So I I feel you on the packaging and the and the design thing because we need that.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: I feel like it can be so boring out here, you know, with the white labels and the black and white type and all that.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: So I feel like that's part of the journey, you know.
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: Like when you're picking out the products you love and you're trying to figure out what you love, rather, you need something that's going to resonate with you, you know, and packaging is a huge component of that.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: Um, but I wanted to ask you on that note, you guys, like where did the name come from?
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: Like, what is Twish?
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: Like, what does it stand for?
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: It was inspired by something.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, if you could tell us a story of that.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: Twish, it took like a very long time to define the name.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think this was like the 15th or 16th name that we came up with.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: And kind of I think before we kind of decide to kind of I don't want to say like demotivated, but kind of just we did the process like so many times trying to find something.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: And then it was I don't I think we kind of were just talking about words and things and conspiring.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: And we put the two words teen and wish together and made a twish and put two eyes that are lowercase because they kind of look like people and represent me and my mom.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: Um I love that.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: That's so cool.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: That's so cool.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's right with that.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: And the reason why I think we kind of when we were going through like the words, I mean teen was obvious, but we came up with this idea of teen and wish, and like every teenager has different wishes.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Some, you know, just maybe they want to be an A student, some might want to have great skin, somebody else might say, I want to be the star football player, whatever it is.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: Everybody who is a teenager, and everybody, but especially teenagers, they all have dreams and aspirations and hopes and and goals.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: And so we thought that that was a good way to represent the um demographic without it being like you have to be this, you have to have that.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Like you can you can make your skincare journey be what whatever you wish it to be, whatever you want it to be.
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: And one of our taglines is don't wish for good skin, twish for it, you know.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: So we tried to use the the words so they make sense, but also it ended up being the brand, and it just it works.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: It could I'm totally gonna be doing the hashtag twish, by the way.
- 35:18SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna be the first one to do it, and it's going to be on everything because honestly, you're right, everyone has a wish.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: Like I remember being a teenager, and literally my wish was beautiful skin.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: Like, no joke.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: I'm not just saying that.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: It really was so I I love it.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: That's so cool.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: That's a really cool name.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: And by the way, I love the two eyes in the middle.
- 35:35SPEAKER_02: I wanted that's kind of why I asked you guys because I love the little eyes in the middle.
- 35:39SPEAKER_02: It just kind of, I don't know, it resonates with me.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: I can't tell you why, but it does.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: And I think it's just so clever.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: And it I just love the whole concept, you know, it really, really catches your eye.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: And it's just so nice to know that you guys put so much thought and love into this.
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think in our industry, and at least you know this, you know, better than anyone, is there's so much redundancy now.
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: And there's you know, there's a lot of brands out here, and no shade to anybody, you know, but at sometimes like you just need people to stir things up a little bit in the best way, right?
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: And it's like this is I I mean, this is my you know example of stirring it up in the best way possible.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, we needed this, we need this now, you know, for teenagers, especially with TikTok taking over.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: Like, I feel like everyone on there is constantly looking for good products, you know, and every time I'm scrolling, I'm like, wow, yeah, you guys are really in need for you know more guidance.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: And so this is really, really, I feel a timely launch.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I'm just I'm so thrilled that you guys are doing this.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: But I wanted to I wanted to round out the the interview and just ask, you know, um, what are some things that we can look forward to as things start rolling out with Twish?
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: I mean, do you guys have anything cool, like any events or um any products you're already thinking of, you know, coming out with next after the initial launch?
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so we're launching October 9th officially with our two products.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: We wanted to keep it like tight knit.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: That's the editor and me.
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: I didn't want to have you know too many products to choose from.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: So we have a gel cleanser called Peachy Clean Peachy Clean.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Um, because your skin literally feels like so soft and smooth, like a peach when you're done with it.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: Um, and a spot treatment that and both of the products, the hero ingredients are salicil salicylic acid and chlorial silver.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: Um, and the splat treatment is called Zit Ain't Cute because I came up with that name before.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: And I was just always like, oh my god, this like every time I break in, I'd be like, this zit is just not cute.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: It's so on my face.
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, that's the name of the splat treatment, Zit Ain't Cute.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: So we try to keep everything like light and fun, and like we're okay with making fun of ourselves, and we're okay with saying that like we don't have perfect skin and that zits aren't cute, otherwise, you wouldn't be using a spot treatment.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: So that's what we have in store for our launch.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: And then in 2024, we have a really cool product coming out that's a um spray.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: I guess well, I guess if we want to say spray mist the same thing, it's it's a on the go mist that has a lot of amazing ingredients in it.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: And when we were formulating this, like everybody was feeling it.
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: Um everybody wanted it, and so it like really helps just to give your skin like this really nice healthy glow, and it has so many different uses for it.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: So that's gonna be coming out afterwards, and we have excuse me, um, we're probably gonna be launching some fun merch.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's where I'm here for that.
- 38:47SPEAKER_02: I want I'm gonna get some merch.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we have really cool, fun designs.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: We did um a fun sweatshirt for our first photo shoot, and we keep on getting like messages on DM about are you gonna sell that sweatshirt?
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna swallow the sweatshirt?
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh crap, we only made five of them.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: So I think we're gonna have to like roll that one out, but they're really cool.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: And then we can like see, we have plans for you know expansion, obviously.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, as the business starts to become profitable and we can reinvest in the company, we'll go out in other ways.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: But I really want, I think Madison agrees, that we really want to make products that teenagers need and want.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: So while we have like a list of ideas that we want to create in the future, we want to make sure that that's really what our market needs and wants as well.
- 39:39SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: Wow, I I can't wait.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: And I'm so excited that you guys are launching on Monday.
