- 0:07Speaker 1: It's so pretty.
- 0:10Speaker 2: It's so pretty all out here. I was like, I
- 0:12Speaker 2: want to come back and venture out more.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Oh, it's so much to do, too.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Yeah. And then, like, especially here. Like, in this little, like,
- 0:19Speaker 3: four-block radius, it's ridiculous. And I didn't even know the
- 0:21Speaker 3: Fox Theater was that close.
- 0:22Speaker 4: Fox Theater and all the teams play right next to
- 0:25Speaker 4: each other. The Red Wings, Tigers, Lions, they all play
- 0:28Speaker 4: right next door to here, so.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Are you born and raised?
- 0:31Speaker 1: Born and raised in Detroit.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Okay, right on, right on. And how long have you
- 0:34Speaker 2: been doing stand-up?
- 0:35Speaker 1: I've been doing stand-up for about 10 years now.
- 0:37Speaker 3: 10? Yep. Dope. Yeah. So what got you started?
- 0:42Speaker 4: So what got me started, this is actually full circle
- 0:44Speaker 4: because this is where I was first exposed to on-stage
- 0:48Speaker 4: entertainment comedy. A good friend of mine was a regular comedian.
- 0:52Speaker 4: cast member with Second City back in the day when
- 0:55Speaker 4: this was Second City. And she would perform weekly with
- 0:58Speaker 4: like Keegan-Michael Key and all those folks who are from here.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Doing great improv and sketch. And after seeing that, this
- 1:03Speaker 4: was like maybe 2005. And after seeing that, I was like, oh,
- 1:07Speaker 4: I love this. And so I started taking sketch writing
- 1:09Speaker 4: classes here. And with my classmates, we produced our very
- 1:13Speaker 4: first sketch show and cast our first show right here
- 1:15Speaker 4: on this stage.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:18Speaker 4: And then when I graduated Second City in about 2009,
- 1:22Speaker 4: In our graduation show, I asked my teacher, I said, hey.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I've been writing some jokes.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Before the intermission, can I just go out by myself
- 1:29Speaker 4: and tell five minutes of jokes?
- 1:31Speaker 1: And she said yes. I didn't think she would say yeah.
- 1:33Speaker 1: And then I caught the bug.
- 1:34Speaker 4: People started laughing at something that I came up with
- 1:37Speaker 4: myself as opposed to getting laughs with groups on stage
- 1:40Speaker 4: when you do improv.
- 1:43Speaker 1: So that was like 2009.
- 1:44Speaker 4: And then I just didn't do anything else for like
- 1:47Speaker 4: five years because Second City just closed in Michigan.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It was here no longer.
- 1:52Speaker 4: And then I was just like, I need to get
- 1:53Speaker 4: back into it. So I went back into improv again
- 1:55Speaker 4: around 2014. And then around 15, 16, I started doing
- 2:00Speaker 4: a lot of open mics. And then I started getting booked.
- 2:03Speaker 4: And then I started becoming a host and featuring. And
- 2:06Speaker 4: now I headline. So I still do both. And I
- 2:10Speaker 4: teach improv now, too. So I teach improv. I produce
- 2:13Speaker 4: my own improv game show that I created during the pandemic.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Which played here April 28th, this past April 28th, and
- 2:21Speaker 4: it's coming back September 9th. I created that, and it
- 2:24Speaker 4: started as a streaming show online because the world was
- 2:27Speaker 4: shut down.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:28Speaker 1: And, yeah, so I just do all those things now.
- 2:30Speaker 4: So it's kind of like the best of both worlds,
- 2:32Speaker 4: improv and stand-up.
- 2:33Speaker 2: You know what's funny is, like, improv games are really fun.
- 2:37Speaker 1: They're the best.
- 2:37Speaker 2: They're so much fun.
- 2:38Speaker 3: And it's funny because, like, I know stand-up comedy and improv,
- 2:41Speaker 3: they always, like, are, like, Trying to verse each other
- 2:43Speaker 3: for some reason. Yes, yes.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And it's like, I was talking with another comic too
- 2:47Speaker 2: that's from here, Patty.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Patty.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Yeah, she's also a guest in improv too. And it's like,
- 2:54Speaker 3: why wouldn't you want to use every tool available to
- 2:56Speaker 3: you in order to make a better comic? Because like,
- 2:58Speaker 3: you know, you definitely, I feel like with the improv games,
- 3:02Speaker 3: it makes you so much sharper after a while. The
- 3:04Speaker 3: wit gets.
- 3:04Speaker 1: The wit, yes.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Gets sharper.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:07Speaker 4: And that helps comics because you might have to deal
- 3:09Speaker 4: with the heckler or you might have to deal with
- 3:11Speaker 4: the sound and lights going out. What are you going
- 3:13Speaker 4: to do to entertain the crowd in this darkness without
- 3:15Speaker 4: the mic working? One time that happened to me when
- 3:18Speaker 4: I did a show on a golf course, a private show,
- 3:20Speaker 4: and I started freestyle rapping with the audience because we
- 3:23Speaker 4: were waiting for the sound guy to get things together.
- 3:27Speaker 4: And I'm like, we have to do something fun. So
- 3:29Speaker 4: that's where improv comes in.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Definitely. And you said freestyle too, which is, that's where
- 3:34Speaker 3: I feel like both of those things, even in music,
- 3:39Speaker 3: when fools are freestyling, it's the same, I feel like
- 3:43Speaker 3: the same part of your brain is we're funny. And
- 3:45Speaker 3: that's why I feel like a lot of rappers and
- 3:47Speaker 3: stuff like that are like, they're just funny people. If
- 3:51Speaker 3: they would just like, Especially when they just talk regular.
- 3:54Speaker 3: I'd like to hear more what this fool has to
- 3:56Speaker 3: say because it's just really silly.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I think most people, if they're naturally quick-witted, they're
- 4:01Speaker 4: automatically funny.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Yeah, and then you teach it too. How many days
- 4:08Speaker 3: do you teach?
- 4:09Speaker 4: So I teach, it's like a class term. So it's
- 4:12Speaker 4: like four Saturdays in a row there's a class. And
- 4:14Speaker 4: then the following Wednesday after that is the class performance
- 4:17Speaker 4: show where we sell tickets and everyone comes together. Am
- 4:20Speaker 4: I able to mention another club that I teach at?
- 4:22Speaker 4: So Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle, that's where I teach it.
- 4:24Speaker 4: So I'm their improv producer and instructor.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Okay.
- 4:27Speaker 4: So like the next class starts July 11th. So whoever
- 4:30Speaker 4: signs up, they will meet four Saturdays in a row
- 4:33Speaker 4: from like 10 in the morning to 12. Then the
- 4:35Speaker 4: very next Wednesday, I'm getting them prepared so that we
- 4:38Speaker 4: have a full audience and they're actually performing improv for
- 4:41Speaker 4: the first time.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Okay.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Yeah, and I also teach a rhyming and improv workshop too.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Because I love musical, we just talked about that, right?
- 4:48Speaker 4: So like I love musical improv so much. And I
- 4:51Speaker 4: work with some of the best improvisers because I'm a
- 4:53Speaker 4: resident improv performer, cast member at Go Comedy Improv Theater,
- 4:57Speaker 4: which is in Ferndale. And some of the best improvisers
- 5:01Speaker 4: are still scared of the thought of rhyming or singing
- 5:04Speaker 4: on the spot or even doing a poem. And so
- 5:08Speaker 4: I teach this workshop that teaches people to get out
- 5:10Speaker 4: of their head and teach them how to rhyme. And
- 5:12Speaker 4: so at the end of every class, by the time
- 5:14Speaker 4: they're done with my workshop, everyone has gone upstage and
- 5:16Speaker 4: done some type of rhyme.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And they was like.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I can't believe I did this. I'm like, see, it's
- 5:20Speaker 1: really easy.
- 5:22Speaker 3: You know what else I looked to about, I was
- 5:23Speaker 3: saying that this is the names that people come up
- 5:26Speaker 3: for the troops.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Oh, the best.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Can I tell you the best one I've ever heard?
- 5:31Speaker 4: So there's a girl named Shivani. She used to perform
- 5:34Speaker 4: here and then she and her family moved to Colorado.
- 5:37Speaker 4: And their troop is an all women troop called Notorious VAG.
- 5:42Speaker 4: That is the best. I said, why did I think
- 5:44Speaker 4: of that? And the way my brain thinks, I think
- 5:46Speaker 4: of a lot of great troop names too. And I
- 5:49Speaker 4: hate when I think of one and I Google it
- 5:51Speaker 4: and it's already used. So I came up with the
- 5:53Speaker 4: idea of one called Fun DMC, like Run DMC.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Someone has that already. Oh no.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Laffrican Americans, someone has that already. A Troop Called Quest.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Someone has that already.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Because that's my favorite group, A Troop Called Quest.
- 6:08Speaker 4: But I'm in an all-female, it's three of us, black women,
- 6:12Speaker 4: and we're named And Still I Improvise, which is a
- 6:16Speaker 4: play off Maya Angelou's And Still I Rise.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:19Speaker 1: So I looked that up first. I was like, no
- 6:21Speaker 1: one has this. Yes, this is our name. So, yeah,
- 6:23Speaker 1: I love coming up with creative.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Names and stuff. It's so funny because it's like, and
- 6:27Speaker 3: especially like when you, you have to hurry up and
- 6:29Speaker 3: write it down.
- 6:30Speaker 1: You have to. Make a logo and everything.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Yeah. Because for some reason, it could be such a
- 6:35Speaker 3: good idea. But if you do two more, three things,
- 6:39Speaker 3: and then come back to that, you're like, wait, how
- 6:40Speaker 3: would it go? How did it go? Yeah, yeah.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Or it's gone.
- 6:43Speaker 3: What was it?
- 6:43Speaker 4: Because there's only so many things you could come up with.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Like I said, the play on A Tribe Called Quest.
- 6:48Speaker 1: So there's only so many.
- 6:49Speaker 4: If you wanted to name your trooper after a rap group,
- 6:51Speaker 4: there's only so many that exist.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:53Speaker 4: So you're lucky if no, you know, if you wait
- 6:55Speaker 4: around too long, you're lucky if no one picked that
- 6:57Speaker 4: up yet.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Yeah. Or if you're walking around town and you're like,
- 6:59Speaker 3: and you overhear a conversation or you overhear like two
- 7:02Speaker 3: words and put them together, like.
- 7:03Speaker 2: That's a great one.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Oh, that's a great one.
- 7:05Speaker 3: That's a good one.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I got to write that down because I'm going to
- 7:08Speaker 2: forget that.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:09Speaker 2: I like that too.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Like that's one thing too that I've learned too is
- 7:12Speaker 3: being a comedian, like I have to, But people are like, oh,
- 7:16Speaker 3: you're a good writer. And it's like, no, I'm not
- 7:18Speaker 3: a good writer. I pretty much write on stage a lot.
- 7:21Speaker 3: I'm just a good jotter down in the moment of
- 7:23Speaker 3: that thought that I'm going to use.
- 7:25Speaker 1: That's how I am.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Every joke I've ever come up with, I was driving
- 7:29Speaker 4: or I was in the showers.
- 7:30Speaker 1: I was doing dishes. I was like, oh, that would
- 7:31Speaker 1: be fun. That would be cool.
- 7:33Speaker 4: I can't just meet with some friends and say, okay,
- 7:35Speaker 4: we're going to sit down and write. It doesn't happen
- 7:38Speaker 4: like that.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Your process is more of just a jot, and then
- 7:43Speaker 3: you're like, I'm going to work this out somehow. I'll
- 7:46Speaker 3: figure it out. Yeah, because of the wit thing. I
- 7:48Speaker 3: love that, too. For me, someone had said this one time,
- 7:52Speaker 3: this was before I was doing comedy, but they go,
- 7:54Speaker 3: wit is the highest form of thinking. Because there's no
- 7:57Speaker 3: thinking required. It's just an instinct. It's really hard to teach,
- 8:02Speaker 3: but it's something that you can sharpen.
- 8:03Speaker 1: That's right.
- 8:04Speaker 3: And I was like, okay. And so I was like, yeah,
- 8:06Speaker 3: that's actually... I, I, I get that. I get that.
- 8:09Speaker 3: And so, um, that's why I did like improv too.
- 8:12Speaker 3: And people were like, uh, when I first got into standup, well,
- 8:14Speaker 3: I know actually my second time when I came back,
- 8:17Speaker 3: cause I started at 16 and I stopped at like 1920. Okay.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Because I was like, I don't have anything else to
- 8:23Speaker 2: talk about.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Right.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Right. I got you.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Yep.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Those life experiences.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Let me go live some life. So, and then I
- 8:27Speaker 3: was like, go and got arrested and went and fucking
- 8:30Speaker 3: like travel the world and shit like.
- 8:31Speaker 2: That and talk shit. And then, um, but like, uh,
- 8:36Speaker 2: I came back and I was, you know, I like stand-up.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I like laughing. I like making people laugh. So in
- 8:41Speaker 3: any way to do that, why wouldn't I try it
- 8:43Speaker 3: or why wouldn't I go for it? And so I
- 8:45Speaker 3: did like sketch as well. And people were like, why
- 8:47Speaker 3: do you like sketch for us? And I started realizing
- 8:49Speaker 3: it's because, oh, you don't want to share your shine.
- 8:52Speaker 3: And I was like, I get that. But, like, I mean,
- 8:54Speaker 3: if you can do it. Because I also, like, later
- 8:57Speaker 3: on in life you start to appreciate– the straight man
- 9:00Speaker 3: more than you'd appreciate the big, Oh yes, for sure. Yeah.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:04Speaker 3: That some people are really good.
- 9:05Speaker 1: To me, those guys are usually the most gifted in
- 9:07Speaker 1: the group.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Cause they, they, they let it play out. They let
- 9:11Speaker 3: it breathe. They're patient with it.
- 9:13Speaker 1: They are serious. Literally the main character is all on them.
- 9:17Speaker 3: And I, and I, and yeah, you start to appreciate
- 9:19Speaker 3: it more and more and more. And I'm like, okay,
- 9:20Speaker 3: I do like this. And yeah, definitely. I'm using all the, the,
- 9:25Speaker 3: the colors in order to make a better picture. And
- 9:27Speaker 3: that's what I like about, using improv and stand-up and
- 9:31Speaker 3: you know like when you develop a character in improv
- 9:34Speaker 3: like who says you can't bring that character oh.
- 9:35Speaker 4: My goodness there's been many times where i just came
- 9:38Speaker 4: up with a voice and i'm like that's someone i
- 9:40Speaker 4: can do on stage yeah and it came from improv
- 9:43Speaker 4: so and everyone knows a lot of sketch and stand-up
- 9:46Speaker 4: comes from improv this is where it starts our whole
- 9:48Speaker 4: life is improvised i grew up with a strict mom
- 9:52Speaker 4: so i was improvised when i was younger because when
- 9:54Speaker 4: she asked Why is this a B on your report
- 9:55Speaker 4: card and not an A?
- 9:56Speaker 1: I have to hurry up and think of a reason.
- 9:58Speaker 1: You know, that's improvising.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, on the fly.
- 10:00Speaker 1: A lot of people don't realize that. Our whole life
- 10:02Speaker 1: is improvised.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Got to keep this ass safe, so I.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Got to figure it out.
- 10:07Speaker 3: And on top of that, too, I'm raised in the 90s,
- 10:10Speaker 3: so I'm a big fan of In Loving Color.
- 10:15Speaker 2: So it's like, that's comedy to me. And people are like, oh,
- 10:18Speaker 2: that's sketch. And I was like, nah, it's funny. It's great. Like,
- 10:21Speaker 2: these are stand-up comics that are doing this shit, too.
- 10:23Speaker 4: They don't think that's comedy when people don't think sketch.
- 10:26Speaker 4: But sketch is, I thought comedy is something that makes
- 10:28Speaker 4: you laugh. So whether it's sketch, stand-up, song, whatever.
- 10:32Speaker 3: It's comedy. It used to always be like a, like.
- 10:35Speaker 1: That's funny how people.
- 10:36Speaker 3: They would always verse it, like, between each other. And
- 10:38Speaker 3: I was like, okay. And they're like, well, you're a comic,
- 10:40Speaker 3: so why are you, you know. I was like, well.
- 10:42Speaker 3: I'm just someone that's a fan of funny.
- 10:45Speaker 2: And I was like, so I don't care how, whatever.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Because also, it's like a drug addict.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I don't care how I get high. I just need
- 10:52Speaker 2: to get high.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 10:53Speaker 2: I don't care where it's coming from.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I don't care.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Yeah. And then all those guys, too, that were on
- 11:00Speaker 3: that show were stand-up comics.
- 11:02Speaker 2: They were great stand-up comics, too.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Because they used all the muscles and stuff like that
- 11:06Speaker 3: in order to bring stuff to life. And they're just mad... Like,
- 11:11Speaker 3: we were talking about it the other day, like, some
- 11:13Speaker 3: of the best sketches, and we were talking. One of
- 11:15Speaker 3: my favorites was, I can't remember the name of her,
- 11:18Speaker 3: but it was Kim Wayne's doing it, and she's always
- 11:20Speaker 3: sitting on the stoop.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Oh, don't talk about, no, don't talk about Miss Benita
- 11:24Speaker 1: or something.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Something about her neighbor. And then she was like, but girl,
- 11:27Speaker 1: let me tell you what happened.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Yes.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and she was like, but you didn't hear that
- 11:30Speaker 2: from me.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Yeah, and she'd be like, oh, there's such and such.
- 11:33Speaker 3: And she'd be all talking nice about it.
- 11:34Speaker 2: She was like, but her husband's in jail, but you
- 11:36Speaker 2: didn't hear that from me.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Yes, and how could, how could, Just like that right there.
- 11:39Speaker 1: How could someone not say that that's comedy?
- 11:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Yeah, that show is so iconic. And I'm a huge
- 11:47Speaker 4: fan of all of the weigh-ins. I would love to
- 11:49Speaker 4: meet them, at least one of them one day. I've
- 11:53Speaker 4: been a really big fan of Marlon.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I love him.
- 11:56Speaker 4: I love his physical comedy. I love physical comedy a lot.
- 12:00Speaker 4: And he's all over the stage.
- 12:01Speaker 3: I was lucky enough to be at my buddy. They
- 12:08Speaker 3: own the Ha Ha Comedy Club in North Hollywood. And
- 12:13Speaker 3: his Jack Asadorian. He'll probably be here. He's on the
- 12:16Speaker 3: wall here, too. Really funny. And I got lucky enough
- 12:21Speaker 3: because I was there hanging out and I was just
- 12:22Speaker 3: doing my set. And Marlon comes in and he's working
- 12:25Speaker 3: on being Pryor. So he's like, yeah, that's when he
- 12:29Speaker 3: was like, got that, like, you were trying to be,
- 12:31Speaker 3: I think he like shot a little bit or shot
- 12:33Speaker 3: like a demo reel to try to like go for
- 12:37Speaker 3: the role. Okay. But yeah, no, it was, he was
- 12:39Speaker 3: really cool, really chill.
- 12:40Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, cool, cool. Cause you know,
- 12:42Speaker 2: you meet comics.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Oh, I know.
- 12:43Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, I hope, I hope you're cool, man.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Cause I've been watching you.
- 12:46Speaker 4: And I try to, I follow like comics that I
- 12:49Speaker 4: really love. I listen to a lot of their interviews
- 12:51Speaker 4: and stuff. And a lot of times you're like, he's
- 12:53Speaker 4: so cool in this interview, but that might not be
- 12:55Speaker 4: the same when he's just chilling and himself.
- 12:57Speaker 1: But yeah, that's cool.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. So I was like, yeah. But all those guys,
- 13:01Speaker 3: like you said too, Marlon too, because they just came
- 13:03Speaker 3: out with the scary movie.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Yeah, the new scary movie.
- 13:05Speaker 3: So I haven't seen it yet.
- 13:06Speaker 2: I want to check it out.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Yeah. But they're.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Like, don't be a menace to South Central while drinking
- 13:11Speaker 2: your juice.
- 13:12Speaker 3: In the hood. Wait a minute.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Okay, I just got to say, the part where he
- 13:16Speaker 4: put the gun to the girl's head and was like,
- 13:18Speaker 4: give me your phone number.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. That shit is so– I like when he's
- 13:26Speaker 3: trying to figure out how to dress.
- 13:27Speaker 2: He's like, should I go with these ones?
- 13:29Speaker 3: And he had, like, the house look and then the Uzi.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:33Speaker 4: Wait, what about when Sean came by and was like,
- 13:35Speaker 4: I came to pick up my son. And all he
- 13:36Speaker 4: did was pick this son up and then put him
- 13:37Speaker 4: back down and left.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Love it.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Such a good bit.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:42Speaker 3: But, yeah, no, and then– but I didn't get to
- 13:44Speaker 3: see– it's so funny because I didn't get to see
- 13:47Speaker 3: white chicks.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Everyone's like, you got to check out white chicks. And
- 13:49Speaker 2: that was, like, the only one that I skipped.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Okay. Because– I think I started like– because you know
- 13:53Speaker 3: once you start getting into comedy, you don't really get
- 13:57Speaker 3: to do like the extra things anymore.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 14:01Speaker 2: I didn't get to watch TV.
- 14:02Speaker 3: I realized like I didn't know– I mean I didn't
- 14:04Speaker 3: see the first like four or five seasons of The Office.
- 14:07Speaker 3: I didn't watch Lost. I didn't watch any of those
- 14:09Speaker 3: shows that came out at that time when I started
- 14:11Speaker 3: open micing it because you're always out at the time.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Always out, yep, grinding, yep.
- 14:15Speaker 3: And I'm the age where we didn't have DVR available
- 14:18Speaker 3: like that, like they do now today, or YouTube or
- 14:20Speaker 3: any of that stuff. Yeah, so it was like, because
- 14:22Speaker 3: you could catch all that stuff now whenever. I used
- 14:25Speaker 3: to talk about, like, back in the day, if you
- 14:27Speaker 3: missed a show, you missed it. And if you're trying
- 14:30Speaker 3: to catch it in the summer on a rerun, I
- 14:31Speaker 3: dare you.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Yeah, but now you can see anything.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Whenever, just instantly.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Binge, yep.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Yeah, and were you a big fan of film and
- 14:40Speaker 3: TV and stuff like that? Like, did you always want
- 14:41Speaker 3: to be an actress and stuff like that?
- 14:43Speaker 1: Did I want to be an actress?
- 14:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Not really, just improv, yes.
- 14:47Speaker 4: But script, no. Like, memorizing lines, that's just not me.
- 14:51Speaker 4: I'm more off the top of my head, and I
- 14:53Speaker 4: enjoy that more, too.
- 14:54Speaker 2: You know what's funny?
- 14:55Speaker 3: That is the same here.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:58Speaker 3: That's why I wanted, like, I went to a theater
- 15:00Speaker 3: class once, and I was like, It's so different. They
- 15:03Speaker 3: were like, you have to read the script because the
- 15:05Speaker 3: writer wrote that. Those words, that's what you had to say.
- 15:07Speaker 3: And I was like, but it could be so much better.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Like, if we could just put some more into this. So, yeah, no,
- 15:13Speaker 3: I totally get, like, the reading of it all is like,
- 15:15Speaker 3: I'm confined to this, and you don't want to be confined.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Not at all.
- 15:19Speaker 4: And not only do you have to remember the script,
- 15:21Speaker 4: you have to apply the emotion they want you to.
- 15:24Speaker 4: The director imagines you crying at this level, but in improv,
- 15:29Speaker 4: you can.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Not cry at all if you don't want to. And
- 15:31Speaker 1: so that's why I like improv.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:33Speaker 1: It's a little bit more freeing.
- 15:34Speaker 3: That's why I, same here, same here. I just like
- 15:36Speaker 3: this standup because it's like, I'm my own stage manager
- 15:39Speaker 3: and prop manager and like, you know, the imagination that
- 15:42Speaker 3: creates like, uh, for me sometimes on the stage, like
- 15:45Speaker 3: I don't like, I might do a bit the same,
- 15:49Speaker 3: the same bit, but I did it like 12 different
- 15:52Speaker 3: ways each night because like, I want to keep falling
- 15:55Speaker 3: in love with it and I want to find out
- 15:56Speaker 3: where else it goes and, Then it's like, oh, I
- 15:59Speaker 3: think I was talking about this earlier not so long ago.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Sometimes even the tone of it can change. And then
- 16:05Speaker 3: it opens up a whole other avenue of like, I
- 16:09Speaker 3: could play with this more now. Oh, I like this
- 16:11Speaker 3: toy again.
- 16:12Speaker 4: I learned that recently because when I play myself back
- 16:15Speaker 4: a lot, I cringe because in my head, I don't
- 16:18Speaker 4: sound this way.
- 16:18Speaker 1: But when I play it back, I can sound kind
- 16:20Speaker 1: of whiny.
- 16:21Speaker 4: And I've learned that when I get on stage, just
- 16:24Speaker 4: be more like, yeah, as.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Opposed to, eh.
- 16:27Speaker 4: So that when I hit that punchline, then I can go, hey,
- 16:30Speaker 4: and then it blows that up and it sparks more
- 16:33Speaker 4: than me being.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Here the whole time. So it's just little things like that.
- 16:37Speaker 4: And I understand now when people say I was into
- 16:40Speaker 4: a conversation that Godfrey was having with someone because I
- 16:43Speaker 4: follow him.
- 16:43Speaker 1: He's one of my favorite comics.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. And another good, another cool dude.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Oh, my God. So talented.
- 16:48Speaker 4: And he was saying how he once met Jerry Seinfeld.
- 16:52Speaker 4: and Jerry said, yeah, so how long you been doing this?
- 16:54Speaker 4: And he said, nine years. He said, he was like, yeah.
- 16:57Speaker 4: And Jerry was like, yeah, that means you're only nine
- 16:59Speaker 4: years old in comedy. And then it hit him like, wow,
- 17:02Speaker 4: this is still early. I still got a lot to learn.
- 17:05Speaker 4: And I realize that, too. A lot of us don't
- 17:06Speaker 4: find our voice. A lot of us don't really figure out, okay,
- 17:09Speaker 4: I want to be a dirty comic.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I want to be good.
- 17:10Speaker 4: A lot of us do not figure that out until
- 17:12Speaker 4: like 15 years later. So many people think that by
- 17:14Speaker 4: the second year, you got this. It's not like that.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Not at all.
- 17:17Speaker 3: And you definitely have to have a.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Uh, like, like you said that, uh, Oh, no worries.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Um, no, no, it's okay.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Uh, the, uh, you were talking about like the age
- 17:29Speaker 3: category when you're nine and it's funny because like, um, you,
- 17:35Speaker 3: you have to like get all the influences off of you,
- 17:39Speaker 3: you know? And it's like, it's, it's okay for you
- 17:42Speaker 3: to have the influences on you in year four or five,
- 17:45Speaker 3: but then by six and seven, you, it should start good.
- 17:49Speaker 3: I shouldn't be able to watch you and tell exactly
- 17:51Speaker 3: who I know your influences are.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:53Speaker 3: I mean, cause it's like by that time you should
- 17:54Speaker 3: be like, Oh, you've got the confidence to talk like
- 17:58Speaker 3: you and not emulate.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Or influence, you know, the person that you like.
- 18:01Speaker 3: And it's like you, you develop, like you said, your
- 18:03Speaker 3: own voice or your own thought process on it. And, um, Oh,
- 18:07Speaker 3: but speaking of influences, who are your influences?
- 18:09Speaker 1: Oh my goodness.
- 18:10Speaker 4: So Chris rock is the reason I got like his specials.
- 18:14Speaker 4: I used to quote, um, different lines with my friends
- 18:18Speaker 4: from his specials. His delivery, just the way he looks
- 18:21Speaker 4: at life, the way he, everything he said, I guess
- 18:25Speaker 4: it was social commentary with his style, because it's mostly
- 18:27Speaker 4: like just taking things that happen, things we've all experienced,
- 18:30Speaker 4: or seeing the news, and then he puts his spin
- 18:32Speaker 4: on it, and it's funny, but he does it in
- 18:35Speaker 4: a brilliant way. So I think between him and D.L. Hughley,
- 18:40Speaker 4: because I used to watch Comic View every night when D.L.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Hughley used to host it, and he was just the
- 18:45Speaker 4: funniest Funniest thing ever.
- 18:48Speaker 1: I knew then that I loved comedy.
- 18:49Speaker 4: But Chris Rock is the person that I think is
- 18:52Speaker 4: the reason why it's like, I want to do that.
- 18:55Speaker 4: I was always funny, like in conversations around family, just
- 18:58Speaker 4: growing up.
- 18:58Speaker 1: People are like, you're funny, Sam, you're funny.
- 19:00Speaker 4: But if you would have told me I would have
- 19:01Speaker 4: been a comedian or did this improv and stuff, all
- 19:04Speaker 4: of that stuff happened because I came to Second City
- 19:07Speaker 4: and watched those folks on that stage. And it opened
- 19:09Speaker 4: my eyes. I was like, I could do that stuff.
- 19:11Speaker 4: And now it's crazy that I teach it, I perform it,
- 19:13Speaker 4: I produce it.
- 19:14Speaker 3: You're in it.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I just filmed my first comedy special with Open
- 19:17Speaker 4: Bar Comedy last summer.
- 19:19Speaker 1: It's on YouTube.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Okay.
- 19:20Speaker 1: So if you would have told me I would be
- 19:21Speaker 1: doing any of these things, no way.
- 19:24Speaker 2: When does it come out?
- 19:25Speaker 3: It came out last summer.
- 19:27Speaker 1: It's called It's About Tam Time.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Oh, that's hilarious.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Yeah, 30-minute special with Open Bar Comedy.
- 19:33Speaker 4: So unlike Dry Bar Comedy with them, you can curse
- 19:35Speaker 4: and be dirty and stuff.
- 19:37Speaker 1: So it's 30 minutes.
- 19:37Speaker 4: Grace said it was in Sarasota, Florida. Yeah, it was cool.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I was asked to do it. So yeah, I'm loving
- 19:42Speaker 1: the journey. Congratulations.
- 19:44Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Yeah, the journey is dope, though. It is.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Hitting those milestones are the best. Because I know you
- 19:49Speaker 4: mentioned Hollywood. And for the first time, I performed in
- 19:52Speaker 4: California last summer.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Okay.
- 19:54Speaker 4: So I did the Belly Room in Comedy Store. And
- 19:57Speaker 4: I stood in line. I was number four in line.
- 20:00Speaker 4: And I just got off the plane and went and
- 20:02Speaker 4: got in line. I was just in time to be
- 20:03Speaker 4: guaranteed a spot.
- 20:05Speaker 3: For um potluck the laugh factory oh the laugh factory okay.
- 20:08Speaker 4: I'm sorry and um and then i got on stage
- 20:12Speaker 4: and the manager was like you were great you were
- 20:13Speaker 4: great yeah so yeah um first impressions are you know
- 20:18Speaker 4: is what's what's important and i put a great first
- 20:21Speaker 4: first impression on them so.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Yeah i have to go back and.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Do more uh when you did the belly room um
- 20:27Speaker 2: how was that what was.
- 20:28Speaker 4: That was that that was the crack them up thursdays
- 20:30Speaker 4: okay and um it was packed room.
- 20:33Speaker 1: It was so much fun. It was great.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Um, a lot of Detroit comics have moved to LA.
- 20:36Speaker 4: So there was quite a few Detroit comics that were
- 20:38Speaker 4: like in the green room and hanging out and supporting.
- 20:40Speaker 4: So it was cool to see them there too.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Oh, you were nervous at all?
- 20:43Speaker 1: No, not really.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Okay.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Not really. Um, I should have been, but I just wasn't.
- 20:49Speaker 4: I think because like my uncle was there and then like,
- 20:52Speaker 4: like I said, I was familiar with quite a few
- 20:54Speaker 4: people in there.
- 20:54Speaker 3: So I was like, Oh yeah, just chill. Yeah. That'll work.
- 20:57Speaker 3: That'll work. Yeah.
- 20:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:59Speaker 3: And then, um, And do you have any goals in
- 21:04Speaker 3: comedy that you want to hit, like a certain place
- 21:06Speaker 3: or a room that you want to go and get into?
- 21:12Speaker 4: Pretty much all the improvs. I've performed many times at
- 21:16Speaker 4: Toledo Funny Bone, for example. So my goal is to
- 21:19Speaker 4: get to the other funny bones, get to the improvs.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Get to the stress factory.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Like, all of these that my faves perform at, I
- 21:26Speaker 4: feel like if I'm performing where Aries Spears performs, then, hey,
- 21:31Speaker 4: then I know that I'm really progressing.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Yeah. And it's sad, too, when an iconic comedy club, like,
- 21:37Speaker 3: shuts down. Yeah. And you're like. i didn't get to
- 21:39Speaker 3: do that stage yeah because it like like carolines i
- 21:42Speaker 3: never got to do carolines i know yeah and that
- 21:44Speaker 3: background is so you know it's like oh i don't
- 21:47Speaker 3: got a video of me in that background that sucks.
- 21:49Speaker 4: It's gone it reminds me of concerts because i love
- 21:52Speaker 4: concerts and i'm always like i never got to see
- 21:54Speaker 4: rick james before he passed away yeah so you're like
- 21:57Speaker 4: oh man i missed that train.
- 21:59Speaker 3: So yeah i know i it's so funny because like
- 22:02Speaker 3: you say that because i'm always like um what concert
- 22:06Speaker 3: would you see dead or alive? And it's like, oh, man.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Because I'm a big fan of Jimi Hendrix. So I
- 22:13Speaker 3: was like, I'd love to see Jimi play. and go
- 22:15Speaker 3: see that, then I would go back in time and
- 22:17Speaker 3: go check that out. So yours would be Rick James,
- 22:19Speaker 3: or who would you see?
- 22:20Speaker 4: Well, the only reason why is Rick James and really
- 22:22Speaker 4: no one else because I've seen almost everyone.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I've been to over 250 concerts in my life.
- 22:28Speaker 4: I've seen everyone from Jamiroquai to The Killers, Coldplay, Celine Dion,
- 22:33Speaker 4: Michael Jackson twice, Janet Jackson five times, Usher, Beyonce, like everyone.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Really?
- 22:40Speaker 1: Yeah, just everyone. Wow. Yeah, I love, I love, love music.
- 22:44Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I love music. Music and comedy are my top two.
- 22:47Speaker 3: To catch a grace.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Food's up there too.
- 22:49Speaker 4: But yeah, I love, I was blasting Earth, Wind &
- 22:52Speaker 4: Fire on my way here. So that's another group that
- 22:55Speaker 4: even though they're not gone, they're still here. But, you know,
- 22:59Speaker 4: some people pass away and then they replace them with members.
- 23:02Speaker 4: So I regret not seeing them with their original members.
- 23:04Speaker 1: But they're still touring.
- 23:05Speaker 4: Like they're coming to Little Caesars Arena right next door.
- 23:07Speaker 1: July 1st with Lionel Richie. That's going to be a
- 23:10Speaker 1: good show. I've never seen Lionel either.
- 23:12Speaker 2: You've never seen Lionel?
- 23:13Speaker 3: Okay.
- 23:13Speaker 2: I want to see, now that you said that, I
- 23:15Speaker 2: was like, shit, I want to see After 7.
- 23:17Speaker 1: You want to see After 7?
- 23:18Speaker 3: That's so random. After 7. Because I think his son
- 23:23Speaker 3: took over one of the spots.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Do they still perform?
- 23:26Speaker 3: I don't think so, but I would love to see that.
- 23:28Speaker 1: That is so funny. After seven?
- 23:31Speaker 2: You said about dying and replacing members, and I was like, oh,
- 23:33Speaker 2: because the sons.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Like the Temptations, you know they've been replaced many times.
- 23:37Speaker 4: I still see them when they perform.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Tony, Tony, Tony, one of them recently passed too, just recently.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Dwayne Wiggins. He kissed me on the cheek when I
- 23:44Speaker 1: was 16 years old.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Shut up.
- 23:46Speaker 4: I saw them at a club in North Carolina when
- 23:49Speaker 4: I was down there for my family reunion, and it
- 23:52Speaker 4: was a nightclub, and they were like, who wants to
- 23:54Speaker 4: come on stage?
- 23:54Speaker 1: They brought up like three girls, and I was one
- 23:56Speaker 1: of them, and Dwayne kissed me on my cheek.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Oh, shit.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Yeah. And Raphael Sadiq, he's no longer with them, but
- 24:02Speaker 1: I still see him when he comes.
- 24:04Speaker 4: He's amazing, and I never knew until recently.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Okay.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 24:11Speaker 4: I never knew until recently that he produced. He's behind
- 24:15Speaker 4: so many hits that we love, like people like Alicia
- 24:18Speaker 4: Keys and D'Angelo.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:19Speaker 1: I never knew that.
- 24:20Speaker 3: So many people.
- 24:22Speaker 1: So many.
- 24:23Speaker 2: He writes so much stuff.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Yeah, he's amazing.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Like, I was even a fan, too. Like, Lucy Pearl
- 24:27Speaker 2: when he was doing that group.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Lucy Pearl with Dawn from In Vogue. Yeah.
- 24:30Speaker 3: And what's his name from Tribe? Was it Phife from Tribe?
- 24:33Speaker 3: Or something? Wait, who else?
- 24:34Speaker 2: Because it was three.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:35Speaker 2: I can't remember who else it was.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Phife, Alicia Muhammad, and Q-Tip. Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 24:41Speaker 3: That's who you're talking about? Yeah, but, like, who was the...
- 24:44Speaker 3: In Lucy Pearl, there was three of them.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Oh, you're talking about Lucy Pearl.
- 24:47Speaker 3: No. Yes.
- 24:48Speaker 2: It was.
- 24:49Speaker 1: I'm trying to think. Was Q-Tip in Lucy Pearl?
- 24:52Speaker 3: No, no. It wasn't Q-Tip.
- 24:53Speaker 4: It was.
- 24:54Speaker 2: And I'm trying to think, was it, now I got
- 24:57Speaker 2: to know.
- 24:58Speaker 3: I can't remember. And then.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Wait, was Lucy Pearl Dawn? Raphael?
- 25:07Speaker 3: Raphael, Dawn, and who else? Let's see.
- 25:13Speaker 1: When you said tribe, I thought you were thinking of
- 25:14Speaker 1: the members of tribe.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Because there's three of them in there. And I'm trying
- 25:18Speaker 3: to think.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Can I zoom? Yeah, yeah.
- 25:25Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Yep. That's him.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Okay.
- 25:27Speaker 1: That's the DJ for tribe.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Okay. Then it was.
- 25:30Speaker 4: DJ for Raphael when Raphael came.
- 25:32Speaker 3: Yes. Okay. Yeah.
- 25:33Speaker 2: So I knew one of the members of tribe was in,
- 25:35Speaker 2: I could just remember.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Yeah. No. Um, cause Raphael, he used to, uh, like
- 25:40Speaker 3: own restaurants and stuff. I live in Sacramento too, cause
- 25:42Speaker 3: where I'm from, like, cause he's originally from the Bay,
- 25:44Speaker 3: you know, but like everyone like migrates after a while,
- 25:46Speaker 3: like towards Sacramento and like other areas, but no. Um,
- 25:49Speaker 3: so yeah, yeah, yeah. I grew up on all that stuff. And, um,
- 25:52Speaker 3: I would love to see them. I'm like, you get
- 25:54Speaker 3: to see everybody. You got to see everyone.
- 25:55Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Everyone.
- 25:56Speaker 4: Like, even back in the day, I saw MC Hammer,
- 25:58Speaker 4: LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Salt-N-Pepa, Biz Markie.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Like, all I did was go to concerts.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Even at, like, you know what's great, too, is, like,
- 26:06Speaker 3: when you catch them at, like, intimate off-night ones that
- 26:10Speaker 3: they end up doing, like, people do and stuff like that.
- 26:12Speaker 3: I was like, oh. There was this... place called boardwalk
- 26:16Speaker 3: over in where I grew up at. And, um, it's
- 26:18Speaker 3: just a small venue and, you know, sometimes they would
- 26:21Speaker 3: just do a drop in set because they were heading
- 26:22Speaker 3: onto the base and they were like, Oh, let's just
- 26:24Speaker 3: get a little tune upset. And it's like, it's so
- 26:27Speaker 3: dope to catch like a nice intimate setting or an
- 26:29Speaker 3: acoustic setting sometimes. Oh man.
- 26:31Speaker 1: I remember MTV unplugged.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Yeah. Um, like I've seen Maxwell and Jill Scott, people
- 26:37Speaker 4: like that in the smaller intimate clubs when they first
- 26:40Speaker 4: started out, like St.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Andrew's hall here downtown. And it's like, I know at.
- 26:44Speaker 4: Some point you get popular and you get big and
- 26:46Speaker 4: you have to go to these arenas, but it's not
- 26:48Speaker 4: the same because I remember the roots before anyone, and
- 26:51Speaker 4: I won't say anyone knew who they were, but they
- 26:53Speaker 4: were not mainstream. A lot of us hip-hop heads, we
- 26:56Speaker 4: knew who they were, and we were going to their
- 26:58Speaker 4: small shows, and to hear Questlove play with the drums
- 27:02Speaker 4: loud in your ear in this small space, it sounds
- 27:05Speaker 4: so much better than the bigger venues, but it makes
- 27:07Speaker 4: sense that you know, they're on Jamie Fallon and they're
- 27:11Speaker 4: doing collabs with people like Erykah Badu and things like that.
- 27:14Speaker 4: Now they've blown up over the years. So, of course,
- 27:17Speaker 4: they're going to be at bigger places. But I wish,
- 27:19Speaker 4: just like with Dave Chappelle, he came a few years
- 27:23Speaker 4: in a row, it seems like, around COVID, I remember.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Because I even went to that show that he did
- 27:27Speaker 4: where he was, like, really drunk and high.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Did you hear about that one? I was there. It
- 27:31Speaker 1: was like he said he did weed in the back
- 27:33Speaker 1: with Danny Brown. And so when he came out, he
- 27:36Speaker 1: was just... He was like really high. It made the news.
- 27:40Speaker 1: It went national. He even talked about it on his special.
- 27:42Speaker 1: But I was at that show. But my point is, he.
- 27:45Speaker 4: Did those three shows consecutively when he came to Detroit.
- 27:49Speaker 4: Next door at the Fillmore, which is smaller. But now
- 27:53Speaker 4: he's going to be here in a couple of weeks
- 27:55Speaker 4: at Little Caesars Arena, which is huge. So it's like
- 28:00Speaker 4: the jokes are still going to be great. But I just,
- 28:02Speaker 4: I like, I would like to see him in the smaller.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Small setting.
- 28:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:05Speaker 3: It's so funny that you said that because Chappelle, I remember,
- 28:08Speaker 3: but I do remember when he was here and then
- 28:09Speaker 3: he like walked off stage because.
- 28:12Speaker 1: That had to be the one.
- 28:13Speaker 3: There was one where he was like, they kept, this
- 28:15Speaker 3: was like right when the Chappelle show was blowing up and.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Everyone was like, Rick James, bitch.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Oh, that was long before.
- 28:21Speaker 2: And he got pissed off and he walked off the stage.
- 28:23Speaker 1: It was here?
- 28:24Speaker 3: Yeah, because they wouldn't let him finish the jokes and
- 28:26Speaker 3: then they started booing him. I didn't hear about that.
- 28:30Speaker 3: It was a long time ago. I was going to say,
- 28:34Speaker 3: come full circle, you were talking about Questlove. I think
- 28:38Speaker 3: I've seen that he's going to be doing a documentary
- 28:40Speaker 3: on Earth, Wind, and Fire.
- 28:41Speaker 1: He is. I saw that. I was scrolling and I
- 28:43Speaker 1: saw that.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I was like, oh, interesting. I was like, okay.
- 28:46Speaker 3: That's going to be cool to catch and stuff like that.
- 28:51Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 28:51Speaker 2: We should get to trivia.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Oh, my goodness. We were talking a long time. Were
- 28:55Speaker 1: you like this with everyone else?
- 28:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:58Speaker 3: I mean, some, some.
- 29:00Speaker 1: See, I'm just passionate about everything. I could talk forever
- 29:02Speaker 1: about this.
- 29:03Speaker 2: That's what I love though. That's what I'm saying here.
- 29:05Speaker 3: So it's like, it's so good to talk to somebody
- 29:06Speaker 3: that like wants to conversate.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Yes.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Um, but here we, uh, um, the, I'll just give you,
- 29:14Speaker 2: it's just, just the silly stuff. Oh, hilarious.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Okay. Um, uh, what is, uh, so the first question is, um, what,
- 29:24Speaker 3: does the SWV stand for in the R & B group?
- 29:28Speaker 1: Sisters with Voices.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Yes.
- 29:30Speaker 4: If I were in the group, I'd change it to
- 29:32Speaker 4: Sisters with Vodka, but it's Sisters with Voices. A, Sisters
- 29:36Speaker 4: with Vodka.
- 29:37Speaker 3: That's an improv troupe. There you go.
- 29:38Speaker 1: That's a good one.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Actually, yeah, that's funny.
- 29:42Speaker 3: We should try for those ones. Oh, it's so funny
- 29:46Speaker 3: that it's music and it's got first two, actually three
- 29:49Speaker 3: are all going to be music. Whitney Houston went to
- 29:52Speaker 3: the top of the charts with this 1992 song that
- 29:53Speaker 3: was Dolly Parton's originally.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I will always love you.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Yes.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I thought you were going to ask me hard stuff
- 29:59Speaker 1: like American history.
- 30:01Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 30:02Speaker 3: It's just all over the place. Okay.
- 30:07Speaker 2: It says, wait, wait, Detroit's Motown too, right?
- 30:09Speaker 3: Yeah. Oh, great. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was like, wait,
- 30:11Speaker 3: hold on.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Motown.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Before embarking on a solo career, Beyonce was part of
- 30:17Speaker 3: what R & B group?
- 30:18Speaker 1: Destiny's Child.
- 30:19Speaker 3: Boom.
- 30:19Speaker 1: If I was in a group, I'd call it Destiny's
- 30:21Speaker 1: Child Support. If I was in a troupe. Another true.
- 30:28Speaker 2: What is the California state's animal?
- 30:31Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 30:32Speaker 2: I don't know that.
- 30:33Speaker 1: California.
- 30:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:38Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 30:39Speaker 3: It's a bear. California bears.
- 30:40Speaker 1: I would have never.
- 30:41Speaker 3: It's a grizzly bear. That's okay. That's okay. How often
- 30:46Speaker 3: are the Summer Olympics held?
- 30:48Speaker 1: Every four years.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Boom. There you go. you got four out of five.
- 30:52Speaker 4: So far you're trying to be tricky because you said
- 30:53Speaker 4: specifically summer like it's going to be a different answer
- 30:55Speaker 4: for winter you know what I mean because isn't every
- 30:58Speaker 4: four years no matter what so I felt like you
- 31:01Speaker 4: guys tried to make that tricky.
- 31:04Speaker 3: The Hollywood sign originally spelled out what word.
- 31:11Speaker 1: The Hollywood sign originally spelled out what.
- 31:13Speaker 3: Word yeah some of it burned down and now it
- 31:17Speaker 3: just says Hollywood but it used to say more it
- 31:19Speaker 3: used to say more but it was one big word.
- 31:23Speaker 1: It was one big word and included the word Hollywood?
- 31:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:27Speaker 1: But it was all one word with no spaces, no hyphen?
- 31:31Speaker 3: Nope. Yeah, just one big long word.
- 31:35Speaker 1: What? Hollywood life? I have no idea.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Close.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Really?
- 31:42Speaker 3: Hollywood land.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Oh, wow. I didn't know that.
- 31:45Speaker 3: Yeah. They burned down in a fire that they had
- 31:48Speaker 3: and then they just left it like that.
- 31:50Speaker 1: I bet so many people don't know that. I've never
- 31:52Speaker 1: heard that in my life.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Okay, so number seven is this actor is notably starred
- 31:58Speaker 3: in TV sitcoms How I Met Your Mother and Doogie Howser.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. Those three letter, those three word guys
- 32:06Speaker 1: get me every time. Neil Patrick Harris. Boom, you got it.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Awesome, awesome.
- 32:13Speaker 3: Okay, so Okay, so number eight. Actor Jim Carrey first
- 32:17Speaker 3: made his name... Uh-oh. Yeah, what show was.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:21Speaker 2: We just got to talk about.
- 32:24Speaker 3: Okay, cool. Okay, number nine. Okay, here's a curveball. What
- 32:29Speaker 3: do you call a group of porcupines?
- 32:33Speaker 1: Is this like a brain teaser joke or a real thing?
- 32:36Speaker 3: It's a real thing, yeah.
- 32:39Speaker 2: I thought this was.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Is it a.
- 32:40Speaker 3: Go ahead, I'm sorry.
- 32:43Speaker 1: A quill peck? It's just a guess.
- 32:45Speaker 3: No, but that's a great guess.
- 32:46Speaker 1: Okay.
- 32:47Speaker 3: It is a prickle of porcupines.
- 32:50Speaker 1: That sounds like a good troop name, too. Yeah.
- 32:53Speaker 3: That is great. Okay.
- 32:55Speaker 2: It's the last question.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Okay.
- 32:57Speaker 3: And you've got what? Maybe five? You only missed two.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Okay. And it's ten total?
- 33:03Speaker 3: Yeah. Okay. So you're at number nine. Wait, no, three.
- 33:06Speaker 3: So you have six points. actually. Six points.
- 33:10Speaker 1: And what do we win? This Rice Krispie treat right here?
- 33:12Speaker 3: Yeah, you win.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Okay, I'll take that.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Anything out of the snack bag. So if you want
- 33:18Speaker 3: to wager any points, you have six. You can wager
- 33:21Speaker 3: as many as you want or none. Two. Two. Okay,
- 33:23Speaker 3: you're going to wager two. Okay. So which number does
- 33:27Speaker 3: every Major League Baseball player wear on April 15th?
- 33:31Speaker 1: Okay, I got to say this. I'm not going to
- 33:33Speaker 1: get it right.
- 33:34Speaker 3: Okay.
- 33:34Speaker 1: I know nothing about sports.
- 33:36Speaker 4: In fact, when I performed last week, I was telling
- 33:38Speaker 4: the audience how Just recently I learned that I was
- 33:42Speaker 4: not supposed to be putting an S at the end
- 33:44Speaker 4: of Scottie Pippen after all these years.
- 33:46Speaker 1: I've been calling him Scottie Pippens.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Hilarious.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Yeah. So I'm not going to know that answer.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 33:53Speaker 1: But I'm going to say 15. Just a guess.
- 33:55Speaker 3: Oh, wait. No, it's not 15. It's 45. It's on
- 33:59Speaker 3: April 15th, but everyone wears the number 45 for Jackie Robinson.
- 34:02Speaker 3: That's his number. Wow. Wow. Did you know that answer? Yeah, yeah.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Before looking it up, you knew the answer?
- 34:08Speaker 2: Yeah, because of a baseball fan.
- 34:09Speaker 3: Because every time I watch baseball, it's all 45s.
- 34:13Speaker 4: So are you feeling FOMO that a game is about
- 34:15Speaker 4: to start across the street in this beautiful weather?
- 34:17Speaker 1: Are you going?
- 34:17Speaker 3: I'm an Oakland, I'm a Sacramento A's fan now. So
- 34:21Speaker 3: I'm feeling FOMO because I won't be here next week
- 34:23Speaker 3: when they're here.
- 34:24Speaker 1: I see, okay.
- 34:25Speaker 3: But I did go to a game on Friday.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Oh, you did?
- 34:27Speaker 3: Yeah. Okay. I definitely went to it.
- 34:28Speaker 2: As soon as I got to this, I was like,
- 34:30Speaker 2: is there a game playing I need? I would love
- 34:32Speaker 2: to go.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Oh, that's good.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:33Speaker 4: When I had my game show I was telling you about,
- 34:35Speaker 4: it was here April 28th or 29th.
- 34:38Speaker 1: I forgot already. But we were up against the Pistons
- 34:42Speaker 1: playoffs right next door. Oh, shit.
- 34:45Speaker 4: Yeah, so downtown was crazy. The parking and everything. But
- 34:48Speaker 4: we still had an audience, and we had one of
- 34:50Speaker 4: the best shows ever.
- 34:51Speaker 3: That's so good, though, because it's hard, especially with all
- 34:54Speaker 3: the sports things going on.
- 34:55Speaker 4: Because the thing you can't even, even when you, the
- 34:57Speaker 4: thing about being located here, I don't care what date
- 35:00Speaker 4: you get, if it turns out that someone's going to
- 35:03Speaker 4: be in the Super Bowl and it wasn't planned.
- 35:05Speaker 1: What are you going to do? Or, you know.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:08Speaker 2: I was going to say.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Because everything's right next door to us.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Tell the audience where they can find you.
- 35:14Speaker 3: Okay.
- 35:15Speaker 2: And where you're going to be at next.
- 35:16Speaker 3: Okay.
- 35:17Speaker 4: So you can find me at Tam White Comedy, T-A-M
- 35:20Speaker 4: like Tammy, white like the color comedy. And I put
- 35:22Speaker 4: up a lot of cool, I do a lot of
- 35:24Speaker 4: sketches that I do myself, really fun content that I
- 35:28Speaker 4: put online, as well as my show dates and some
- 35:30Speaker 4: of my clips. Next I will be, oh, can I
- 35:35Speaker 4: tell them about my show here?
- 35:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:37Speaker 1: It's coming back September 9th.
- 35:39Speaker 4: And it's called Hip-Prov Improv Game Show with a Dash
- 35:42Speaker 4: of Hip-Hop because I love music so much.
- 35:44Speaker 1: So local comedians.
- 35:46Speaker 4: And improvisers compete with a lot of improv and hip-hop challenges.
- 35:51Speaker 1: I host it. I produce it. I created it.
- 35:54Speaker 4: Stevie Soul, Detroit's premier beatboxer, he's my beatboxer. He beatboxes
- 35:59Speaker 4: at every show because there are freestyle rap competitions also
- 36:02Speaker 4: in the show. Each round, each game, each part of
- 36:06Speaker 4: the game is judged by comedian Michael McDaniel, who's kind
- 36:10Speaker 4: of like my co-host. He's an awesome celebrity impressionist. He
- 36:14Speaker 4: was like this close to getting on Saturday Night Live. Yeah,
- 36:16Speaker 4: he lost out to like, I think, Jay Pharoah years ago. Yeah,
- 36:19Speaker 4: he's very good. That's how good he is. And as
- 36:23Speaker 4: each round, he judges each person as a celebrity. So
- 36:29Speaker 4: imagine Steve Harvey or Donald Trump or Dave Chappelle breaking
- 36:32Speaker 4: down what he thought about your last, you know, your
- 36:36Speaker 4: pun or punchline.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:38Speaker 4: So, and then audience win prizes and everything we do
- 36:42Speaker 4: is based off audience suggestions. So they're automatically a part
- 36:45Speaker 4: of the show too. It's a lot of fun.
- 36:47Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 36:47Speaker 1: September 9th, Wednesday here, seven.
- 36:49Speaker 3: 30 at the mic drop.
- 36:50Speaker 1: Yep.
- 36:51Speaker 3: Awesome.
- 36:51Speaker 4: But yeah, follow me cause I'm everywhere doing standup and
- 36:54Speaker 4: improv and stuff. And I'll be headlining at Ann Arbor
- 36:56Speaker 4: comedy showcase, um, labor day weekend too.
- 36:59Speaker 3: Okay.
- 36:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:00Speaker 3: And then I was going to say, definitely go check out, uh,
- 37:05Speaker 3: It's about Tantime.
- 37:06Speaker 1: It's about Tantime.
- 37:07Speaker 3: It's still on YouTube, my special.
- 37:14Speaker 1: I love that.
