Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Dr Ang Jury: Women's Refuge Chief Executive on changing the attitudes that cause family violence
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So one point three billion dollars in family and sexual
- 0:03Speaker 1: violence prevention spending is set to go under review by
- 0:07Speaker 1: this government. It's the second five year plan and it
- 0:10Speaker 1: follows on from the Labor government's first one, which is
- 0:12Speaker 1: launched back in twenty twenty one. Now the government announced
- 0:15Speaker 1: the review and new plan yesterday which we'll see a
- 0:17Speaker 1: new cross agency plan tasked with doing fewer things, but
- 0:21Speaker 1: doing those things well. And the move has been welcomed
- 0:24Speaker 1: by those working in violence preventions. So let's find out
- 0:27Speaker 1: if that's true. I am joined now by doctor An's
- 0:29Speaker 1: Jury from the Women's Refuge and is the chief Executive.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Good morning to you, Good morning Andrew.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Are you welcoming the.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Plan many parts of it? Yes?
- 0:40Speaker 1: Well what parts are you not welcoming? That was not
- 0:45Speaker 1: a wholehearted one hundred percent? This is awesome.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Look, no plan is ever going to make all the
- 0:50Speaker 2: people happy all the time. You know, we need to
- 0:54Speaker 2: recognize that the things in there that are like, certainly
- 0:59Speaker 2: the focus on training of frontline civil servants. I think
- 1:03Speaker 2: that's long overdue. We need to be all talking from
- 1:07Speaker 2: the same songsheet.
- 1:09Speaker 1: When the government says we're doing we're going to do
- 1:12Speaker 1: fewer things but do them. Well, that means that some
- 1:14Speaker 1: agencies or groups like yours will be sitting there on tenterhooks,
- 1:16Speaker 1: aren't wondering whether you're the one that will get the
- 1:21Speaker 1: tick of approval?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah, well that remains to be seen. Andrew, I have
- 1:28Speaker 2: no immediate fears, and I mean we'll face any sort
- 1:33Speaker 2: of review as everyone else would have to.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Do you do you understand Do you understand the new
- 1:38Speaker 1: government's approach and the differences from the past regime. Their
- 1:41Speaker 1: approach is called social investment. Do you understand the difference
- 1:45Speaker 1: between their approach and the past regimes approach?
- 1:50Speaker 2: Yes? No, maybe? Is the answer that I don't think
- 1:54Speaker 2: anybody is really clear in the sector. I don't think
- 1:58Speaker 2: anybody is really clear about what this particular version of
- 2:03Speaker 2: social investment is.
- 2:06Speaker 1: There. There are seven focus areas with phrases like protecting
- 2:11Speaker 1: children and young people, investing in commissioning will, keeping people safe,
- 2:17Speaker 1: and stopping violence. Do these goals seem vague?
- 2:23Speaker 2: They could be tighter. There are measures in the action
- 2:27Speaker 2: plan that do measure progress against those goals. So you know,
- 2:35Speaker 2: I mean, we haven't had really solid measures before. That's
- 2:38Speaker 2: got to be a move forward.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Good please can be a little bit more confidence as
- 2:43Speaker 1: we head into Christmas.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Look, there's one of the things that's really good in
- 2:48Speaker 2: this plan is a focus on those using violence in
- 2:54Speaker 2: services that are available to them. That is long overdue.
- 2:59Speaker 2: So you know, if we're going to beat this thing,
- 3:02Speaker 2: let's try and turn the tap off and stop the
- 3:05Speaker 2: people that are actually committing violence.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Well, see it, and Merry Christmas. Thank you for all
- 3:11Speaker 1: your service over the course of the year. Okay, bye
- 3:14Speaker 1: bye bye. Now it is a seven to six, tough
- 3:17Speaker 1: job for her, tough job for us, tough job for
- 3:20Speaker 1: the government. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,
