- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Mike Nardie,
- 0:03Speaker 1: a kind assistant is with US, scored over thirteen hundred
- 0:06Speaker 1: points in his four year career at Villanova, then coached
- 0:09Speaker 1: there for ten years. Mike, this Yukon team that you
- 0:14Speaker 1: are looking at and you've been with them since the summertime,
- 0:18Speaker 1: is a work in progress. I think every team is
- 0:20Speaker 1: like that. A couple of guys not available right now.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Three guys actually terras Red Raylan Mullins and Jacob Furfey,
- 0:28Speaker 1: who all might be major rotation players for this team.
- 0:32Speaker 1: So as you look at the squad right now, what
- 0:36Speaker 1: can you get out of it? You know what I'm saying.
- 0:38Speaker 1: You really can't say, well, we're going to be really
- 0:41Speaker 1: good because we got these other guys coming along when
- 0:44Speaker 1: they're healthy. But you don't have that right now. You've
- 0:46Speaker 1: got to work with what you have.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think this is a great opportunity for
- 0:51Speaker 2: our team, you know, to come together and really it's
- 0:56Speaker 2: got to be a next man up mentality, right there's
- 0:59Speaker 2: going to be and hopefully that there's not many but
- 1:02Speaker 2: things that you can't control during the season. You know,
- 1:05Speaker 2: guys get nicks and bruises and different things that come up.
- 1:08Speaker 2: So really you're hoping that this gives guys opportunity that
- 1:13Speaker 2: maybe they wouldn't have as much, and now they're getting
- 1:16Speaker 2: those reps and they're getting that confidence. So when you
- 1:20Speaker 2: add some of those other guys that you know, we
- 1:22Speaker 2: know are gonna be key contributors, now you have a
- 1:26Speaker 2: really deep team and you can play different styles. You
- 1:30Speaker 2: can call on a guy you know at any given night,
- 1:33Speaker 2: and you know that guy is prepared because of an opportunity,
- 1:38Speaker 2: you know, you know, because of where we're at right now.
- 1:41Speaker 2: So I just think it's a great, a great opportunity
- 1:45Speaker 2: for our team and other guys to step up. Yeah,
- 1:49Speaker 2: we were talking about Eric Raibo with Dan Hurley freshman
- 1:53Speaker 2: seven to one.
- 1:54Speaker 1: What's your take on him? He seems like he's got
- 1:57Speaker 1: big time talent. It looks like he can do just
- 1:59Speaker 1: about any thing. What has he got to do to
- 2:01Speaker 1: get better as soon as he can and help the team?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Now? Yeah, I mean, I think for any freshman coming
- 2:09Speaker 2: into a place, you know, like Yukon, it's the intensity
- 2:13Speaker 2: level every day, right, because there's a huge difference from
- 2:17Speaker 2: high school to college, right, And I think that's the
- 2:21Speaker 2: main thing is just being able to play hard for
- 2:23Speaker 2: a long period of time, right. And then you know,
- 2:27Speaker 2: the next thing that usually you know sort of comes
- 2:31Speaker 2: to mind is your defense, right, and you're rebounding, which
- 2:35Speaker 2: again in high school is a little bit different. You're big, right,
- 2:38Speaker 2: he's mobile enough. Coach kind of tells you protect the paint, right,
- 2:43Speaker 2: and that was kind of like his job. But now
- 2:46Speaker 2: you have to get out on a perimeter. You got
- 2:48Speaker 2: to be able to be at the level of screens, right.
- 2:51Speaker 2: You got to then go chase rebounds down. You're playing
- 2:54Speaker 2: against guys that are your size and maybe quicker, bigger,
- 2:57Speaker 2: more athletic, whatever may have you. So I think there's
- 3:01Speaker 2: an adjustment period for any high school guy coming in
- 3:05Speaker 2: to play at Yukon. But the one thing I'll say
- 3:08Speaker 2: about Eric is he's got a great work ethic.
- 3:12Speaker 3: He competes every day.
- 3:14Speaker 2: He doesn't get discouraged when he's not doing.
- 3:17Speaker 3: As well as he would like to.
- 3:19Speaker 2: He just keeps coming right, He comes back the next
- 3:22Speaker 2: day with a great attitude, he keeps competing. He's playing
- 3:26Speaker 2: against a big time center and Tarris Reid, so you
- 3:29Speaker 2: know he's going to have some ebbs and flows. But
- 3:31Speaker 2: I think his upside for us being able to protect
- 3:35Speaker 2: the paint, you know, move his feet on the perimeter.
- 3:38Speaker 3: He's good in the post.
- 3:39Speaker 2: He can back you down, he can score, he can
- 3:40Speaker 2: face you up a little bit, he can step out
- 3:42Speaker 2: and pass. So, you know, I really think when it's
- 3:45Speaker 2: all said and done, we're going to be extremely you know,
- 3:47Speaker 2: happy with where his development ends up being.
- 3:50Speaker 3: And what he can contribute to this team. Yeah.
- 3:54Speaker 1: One thing Dan Heurley was talking about just a few
- 3:55Speaker 1: moments ago is the court sense of helping on defense
- 4:00Speaker 1: for your teammates, And that's an area to me. You know,
- 4:03Speaker 1: over the years, Donovan Klingon got really good at that.
- 4:06Speaker 1: He became a monster down there. I mean, can Eric
- 4:09Speaker 1: develop into that? Do you think he's seven to one boy?
- 4:12Speaker 1: If he can come over in a week side and
- 4:13Speaker 1: block some shots, what a difference we've seen right with
- 4:17Speaker 1: guys like Clinging, How that could change the whole team.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I truly think he can get there, and I think
- 4:23Speaker 2: he's working towards it. You know, I think he's got
- 4:26Speaker 2: a great mindset as well. When you when you are
- 4:29Speaker 2: playing as a freshman, you're kind of worried about making mistakes, right,
- 4:34Speaker 2: And I think on the defensive end, mainly because as
- 4:37Speaker 2: we said, you know it's a transition, right, so sometimes
- 4:41Speaker 2: you get caught in just guarding your guy instead of
- 4:45Speaker 2: helping everybody else because you know, let's face it, like
- 4:48Speaker 2: you want to be out there, you don't want to
- 4:49Speaker 2: look bad, right. But I think we're trying to get
- 4:52Speaker 2: him to see the big picture and really hold you know,
- 4:55Speaker 2: hold down the paint, be able to help you know,
- 4:57Speaker 2: guys when they get beat, be able to guard or
- 5:00Speaker 2: your guy one on one.
- 5:01Speaker 3: So there's a lot of responsibility, right.
- 5:03Speaker 2: But again, I think he's intelligent enough, I think he's
- 5:06Speaker 2: skilled enough, and I think he plays hard enough to
- 5:09Speaker 2: where he's gonna get there.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Yeah, Eric grab is certainly fun to watch a freshman
- 5:13Speaker 1: for the Huskies. We'll be back with Mike Mike Nardi,
- 5:16Speaker 1: the Yukon assistant In just a moment is the Yukon
- 5:18Speaker 1: Men's Basketball Coaches Show on Learfield.
